Time warp

By Bbqfoodguy |

Went for weekday lunch. Walked in, took a couple of minutes to adjust my eyes to the darkness! Once I could see, it reminded me of the old time restaurants I used to go to with my parents 50+ years ago. Had the London broil, simple and good. Would definitely go back.

Old School, Old Los Angeles, and Amazing

By catatthebeach |

Most everything about this restaurant was perfect. From the valet parking to the bartender, we were well looked after. The food was both delicious and more than reasonably priced (about half of what you would expect to pay). Service was provided by a waiter, a bartender, a busboy and a water/bread girl. All of our needs were promptly attended to. We had Prime Rib and Filet Mignon, baked potato & French Onion soup, with sides of Grilled Texas Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms, and Garlic Spinach. The meat was perfectly cooked and flavorful. Both onion dishes were spot on. The mushrooms were the weakest dish, lacking seasoning. The spinach was delicious. Drinks were nicely mixed. This is a restaurant from the 1950s that maintains the ambiance of old Los Angeles and the feel of an old school steakhouse. It is charming. It is also spotlessly clean and the older style red booth decor looks new. The neighborhood is now kind of barrio, but did not feel unsafe. The valet parking is a fenced onsite lot, so the car also felt safe. In short, highly recommended.

Forgotten Los Angeles Gem

By C_n_H_Pure |

Taylor's Steakhouse is an often forgotten gem in the LA steakhouse scene, maybe along with Pacific Dining Car and Damon's. Taylor's is like stepping back into a simpler time. I first started eating here back in the mid 1960's with my parents. Taylor's was a favorite of the downtown LA business community when they wanted to get away and also a big USC alum hang out. I tend to be a creature of habit when I eat out and Taylor's is no exception. I start with the Blue Crab Cocktail, Molly Dinner Salad and Boneless Rib Eye. The steaks are always top notch and impeccably cooked. Despite being a creature of habit I have had most of the steaks on the menu and really like the Kansas City and NY Dinner and sometimes add a lobster tail/ The homemade potato chips and the cooked onions really complete the meal.

Excellent, delicious foods. An old-fashioned steak house, with good, stiff drinks, large booths with red leather upholstery and dark wooden paneling on the walls. And excellent house salad served on a chilled plate, delicious prime rib and filet mignon. Highly recommended.

Fulfilling

By John T |

I want to say this is a "traditional" steakhouse, but that makes it sound as though an architect and interior designer teamed up to open a venue that simulates the high notes of a steak house. Instead... this is the real thing - horseshoe shaped red naugahyde banquettes, windowless dim interior, some interesting European style paintings on the walls, a full bar, and of course rich calorie laden food. It probably hasn't changed too much since opening in 1953. i had the London Broil, wild rice, and steamed broccoli - it was all great. Steak was tender, although I loved the heavy-duty steak knife, I bare needed it.

Great dining experience in Koreatown...

By Donna255100 |

What a brilliant place, great ambiance, great sense of dining history, if only the walls could talk...loved it! Great menu, plenty of choices, our server Dory was amazing, we loved her, her character and service greatly added to the experience. I enjoyed the homemade crab cakes, the BEST I have ever eaten followed by a perfect rack of beef ribs and a crunchy, fresh Taylor's salad. Some fine red win to accompany and our group settled into what was a lovely evening all around. Valet parking onsite was appreciated on what was an unusually rainy night, had a wonderful time here, thanks Taylor's!

Old School Steakhouse at its Finest!

By KeoPAloha |

My buddy said Taylor's was the best steakhouse in LA, so I had to try it out. We came here to celebrate his birthday. Taylor's is on 8th & Ardmore in KTown, and has been open since 1953. I have been to the other location in La Canada, but not this OG location. I started off w/ the escargot ($14.95). This was a good rendition of a classic dish. However, I would have preferred if the chef did not slice the escargot, and if the dish would have been served with a seafood fork: 4 Stars. My friend ordered a side of garlic toast, and it went very well with the butter and garlic sauce of the escargot. Nonetheless, the escargot could have used more garlic: 5 Stars. Next came our entrees. I ordered the marinated Spencer steak ($31.95) w/ a loaded baked potato, while he ordered the filet w/ mashed potatoes ($34.95). I like how the steak came w/ some type of starch for a reasonable price. My steak was very good, although it did have some inedible fat. I am trying to almost eliminate red meat from my diet, so I only ate half the steak (it was my first steak in over 2 months). My friend really liked his steak: Both 4 Stars. Lastly, the sides were reasonably priced at about $7. The asparagus w/ hollandaise sauce was very tasty, and the garlic spinach was nice and fresh: 4 Stars. Regarding the ambiance, it is very old skool as you can tell from the register at the bar. In addition, the booths are red vinyl. What's nice about here vs Mastros or other steakhouses is its not too loud in here. You can actually carry on a convo: 4 Stars. The service was also pretty good. Our waitress was nice and attentive. In addition, our food arrived timely, and the dishes were spaced properly. If you are looking for a reasonably priced alternative to the high end steakhouses, located not too far from DTLA or the Westside, Taylor's fits the bill. They offer very good food at reasonable prices, combined w/ old skool décor, and attentive service.

Excellent steaks

By David from La Palma |

Taylor's is my favorite restaurant for steaks. They have a very nice wine cellar room for a birthday party of 12 on the ground floor. I tried the dry aged bone-in New York steak special for $52.95, which is about their highest price for steaks. It was vey good. Others in my party liked their prime rib, filet mignon and lamb chop meals as well. No kid's menu, but there are some cheaper steaks for $21.95. Soup and salad is extra. Good selection of desserts for a reasonable price. Very good bread pudding for $6.75. Wine corkage fee of $15 is very reasonable. Service was excellent. Valet parking is available.

An unexpected surprise

By Brad G |

We had an early Sunday evening dinner and were craving steak. We drive by the place and had no intention in stopping until my passenger read the reviews. Turned around A great darkened atmosphere and appropriate music playing. The service was great, very attentive. A wedge blu cheese salad to start with. The steaks weee delicious amd we both well done and medium. Loaded baked potato’s. Great deserts were available but we passed. Finally as we left the valet was very friendly and we discussed the restaurant being in this area since the 50’s Definitely recommend.

Excellent dinner and service!!

By Dennis D |

Old style steakhouse with excellent menu and service. Both my son and I had the fillets. Their preparation was superb. Will visit again, when back in the area!!

Very good place for lunch. Good burger, and an exceptional prime rib dip sandwich.

We ARE coming back here!

By Sergeant2057 |

Very cool place in the middle of Koreatown, takes you back to when it opened in the 50's! The steaks were sooooooo tender you could almost forget they gave you a knife. Not sure about some of the reviews on service, ours was fantastic, he was always there when we needed something. The longest wait was for dessert, oh yeah, get the carrot cake! Valet parking was $3.50 and as someone mentioned before the bathrooms are in the PARKING LOT!

Classic Steakhouse

By Gene2459 |

I have been dining at Taylors for years. This is one of those classic steakhouses that is a must if you are in the Wilshire area of Los Angeles. The interior has that old charm with red booths and wood paneling and dim lighting. The service is also excellent. I usually order the tri tip steak medium rare and it is usually cooked to perfection. The mashed potatoes are also very good. The restaurant location is not the best. it is basically located in an area that has gone downhill and it is the last good thing standing. They have their own parking lot with valet service. The prices are moderate and I feel it is a very good value for the quality of the food.

Fabulous Bacon wrapped Fillet Mignon with Bordellaise. Outstanding service. Warm, friendly and classy!!

Bad birthday dinnet

Service was just mediocre and the food was equivalent to Ryan's steakhouse. We were not happy with the average food and the high cost. I would advise families to pay attention to all negative reviews and the date of review. Save your money

Old-school Hollywood delivers

By smallpond |

This is not your modern steakhouse with artistic sauces dribbled across your plate. It's a wood-paneled, red leather chophouse. The servers were great, somehow bringing diner-waitress friendliness into a mid-to-upscale steakhouse. The culotte (the restaurant's signature cut) was a little tougher than I was expecting, but darn tasty. Dinners come with a potato or vegetable side. The French onion soup was awesome. The pumpkin pie cheesecake was amazing, although the creme brulee wasn't as smooth as I would have preferred. We had no trouble finding street parking, although the restaurant does offer valet parking.

Old Steak House with the Best Steak

By elizabethlascheid |

Taylor's is very much a local hand out and if you are anywhere near by it is a must stop for steak lovers and old Los Angeles. Taylor's has been around forever it seems. It is still family owned and has the cool vibe of a 60's and maybe 50's fine dinning restaurant. The service is so perfect. The wait staff knows the menu and the bar selection well. They have a full bar and if there was ever a place to a martini, this is it. They have a great selection of steak and fish items. Last time I was there they had sand dabs and I was in heaven. Their sides are great. Get the mashed potatoes, it is just a must. They are so good. They also have good salads and their soup of the day is always so great. You will be comfortable and ever so happy. The booths are comfy and their place is just the ride shade of a little dark and warm. Parking is easy. I use the street--I like free. Have the best time.

This is how all steaks should be like

By David Yu |

It is not surprising that this is a crowded resturant even at night when most workers have left the office district. This is an old style resturant in which waitresses and waiters have worked for decades. The steaks are exactly what they should be, both in quality and quantity. They come with French fries or baked potatoes. There is a good wine list. The decor is like an English reading room. The noise level is low. Valet parking costs only $3. What more would you like to ask for?

Quality affordable steaks.. Warm friendly atmosphere..

By Indiehue |

I love Taylor's. I went once after reading nice reviews online and can't wait to get back.. I had a bone in ribeye which was not on the menu but just ask! Delicious, juicy, very quality steak for basically half the price of a maestros, mortons, or Flemings.. Great tasting drinks poured just right.. Nice and friendly but Super busy staff..make sure you get everything that you think you may need for ur dinner when the waiter takes ur order because it gets hard to gain the attention of the staff after you've been served..

Good, not great, steakhouse in K-Town

By Thrillafromanila |

Tried Taylor's and I have to say that it's not in the same category as the Cut, Mastro's or Alexander's. It's definitely a second tier steakhouse when it comes to the quality of the steaks and the ambiance BUT you're also not breaking the bank to enjoy a nice steak dinner. Taylor's reminds me of Pacific Dining Car with its dated decor and old school vibe. I recommend the Bone-In Ribeye or the Tomahawk, cooked medium-rare. Those two are gonna be the most flavorful steaks, in my opinion. As for sides, none were really memorable. However service was efficient and they have a small parking lot. Get there early because they do get busy. Request a booth or a table upstairs to avoid the madness downstairs during peak dining hours. If you want to sit downstairs, they'll stuff 10 in a table for 8. I'm not feelin' that since I need some elbow room when I'm sawing through my gigantic Tomahawk!

Your wallet get heartproblems

A hostile atmosphere the employees were not polite but brutal whispering bad words to irritate me. I had to put on my headphones otherwise I couldnt get the food comfortably through my throat. Steak on itself was good but much too small n tiny for a much too overrated price. I never come back here n advice my California friends never to go here because after that night I went to other steakhouses where it was good and the employees were just polite like it should be.

Classic L.A. Steakhouse

By Pbinla |

Taylors really is a classic old school L.A. steakhouse in every sense. As soon as I was met at the door by the two hosts I felt like I was walking into a James Ellroy novel. They looked like this was a side business and what they mostly did was something a tad more sinister but that being said they couldn't have been more charming and friendly. I didn't want to wait for a table and as I was flying solo I sat at the bar, which to be honest I much prefer, especially if I'm alone. There's no waiting for a drink of course and you get the feel of a place much more at the bar or counter. I liked the feel of this bar, it was a warm, agreeable kind of feel, one I could certainly get used to. I ordered the Spencer steak with peppercorn sauce, fries and a glass of Malbec. I like my peppercorn sauce to be spicy with a lot of pepper, thats why they call it peppercorn sauce. This one was tasty but a little underwhelming, bordering on bland. However, I didn't go to Taylor's for the sauce. The Spencer is a 16oz ribeye that when cooked to a perfect medium rare is a special treat that melts in the mouth and makes me very happy. The Malbec was a perfect match. Service was excellent and I get the impression the general vibe of the place is much like it was when it opened in 1953. I highly recommend this restaurant, great for a night out with friends or a couple or sad old gits like me sitting alone at the comfy bar. The lyrics from an old Tom Waits song kept running through my head, something about 'receding hairlines in the naugahyde booths...'

This place is old school cool and reasonably priced

By Nashville4263 |

We read about this place in a blog that listed best independent steakhouses in each state. This one was listed in California because it is a classic old school restaurant that does a great job with service and food. Plus there’s convenient and cheap valet parking onsite. Score! Three of us had the steak coulotte and loved it; the other had the steak salad. Our waiter surprised us with a complimentary piece of cake and ice cream for our son, who was celebrating his birthday. It was a great experience all the way around, and we definitely plan to return.

Worth checking out

By kari |

Wasn’t too sure what to expect as we knew nothing about Taylor's Steakhouse prior to arriving but were pleasantly surprised. We were greeted promptly by a very welcoming bartender and seated within minutes. Our server asked if we had dined with them before and went over a few things after we told him we had not. His recommendations were excellent – the prices were very reasonable and the noise level was just right. Bacon wrapped scallops were delicious – as was the wine he paired it with.

LA Midtown escape

By tom_treddles |

I'm from LA, I lived in LA, I'm a chef and restaurant guy. How did I not know about this place? Had a meeting last week in midtown and was told to meet at Taylor's late afternoon. The address, in LA's Koreatown, had me puzzled. 8th and Normandie, Really? My meeting mate knows I'm old school and would not be drinking tea at 4:30 but a proper cocktail. Imagine my surprise entering this dark, quiet enclave in the middle of the 8th St. cacophony. The traffic had been the usual madness and I felt my self relax as soon as I hit the leather bar stool. Their were 2 guys eating dinner near me at the bar and Taylor's has that same comfortable feeling you get in the best neighborhood steak places in Chicago. Looking at the menu I decided on Calamari, ($12) and a Shrimp (from the Sea of Cortez) Cocktail,($19). My meeting mate would share so I ordered. The Calamari was perfectly cooked and about what you would expect in a nice place. The Shrimp Cocktail was another story altogether. Being a seafood chef and restaurant operator myself I am very familiar with "Sea of Cortez" shrimp. That usually means the Ocean Gardens brand, the Cadillac of all Mexican shrimp. The five U-12 (under 12 per pound) monsters in the cocktail barely fit in the bowl. They had been cooked and chilled to order and was arguably one of the very best Shrimp Cocktails I have ever eaten and worth every penny of the $19 and something easily shareable. My only regret is that I did not stay for dinner, as the menu is classic American Steakhouse. The next time your stuck in LA traffic on Wilshire Blvd., near 8th St. escape to Taylor's and chill.

Disappointed

By Cest0vatelka |

After going to Taylor's almost every month in the 1990s, I was disappointed when I visited last month, October 2013, after an opera performance. The place was packed and we had to wait, which was not surprising on a Saturday, but my anticipation was let down when the culotte steak was impossible to chew. I even told the server about this. Interestingly, the steak looked fine and when I pressed down on the meet with a fork or knife, it seemed to have the usual resiliency and softness. It even was even relatively easy to cut with a steak knife. However, after chewing and chewing, I wasn't able to reduce the bite to something I could safely swallow. Maybe it was bad luck and I chanced upon a really old steer? I am willing to give Taylor's another try. Also, another disappointment was that we waited for 30 minutes and then we were placed upstairs in a room badly in need of renovation, a crummy place to eat. As comfy and cozy as the downstairs is, the upstairs is the pits. Next time, I'm saying no.

Faded Glory

By Filmprof |

Taylor's used to be a favorite spot when I would visit Los Angeles -- it's old school vibe, cozy bar and excellent steaks take you back to Mad Men days. A recent visit was a disappointment. The martinis are still fabulous, but the food was not as good, the service was rushed and the pace of the meal off. Maybe it was just a bad night, or maybe they're coasting on their status as an LA landmark. It'll always be a nostalgic favorite for me, but I hope that they improve their game.

Middle of the road

By slinkydownthestairs |

We were visiting LA for holiday and decided to go for steak here one night. Overall it was an average experience, don't come here expecting top notch steak but a generally ok value one. One thing which we found strange was the valet situation, whereby the small adjoining car park required little effort to actually park the car yourself yet the valet was overly eager to park our car for us, even continually trying to pull open the locked driver side door... highly unnecessary in my opinion! Back to the food... the creamed spinach tasted a bit off and the fries could have been crispier. My medium tenderloin bordelaise was a bit chewy but my partners Spencer medium rare was not too bad.

Very good meal at a very good price

By hobbitnj |

Steakhouses these days all seem to have set their prices above $60 for their top cuts. So when I see a place below $30, I wonder, "upon which breed of dog I shall be dining"? I am, of course, joking, but Taylor's has, somehow, managed to produce quality food at reasonable prices. My salad was crisp, fresh and well made, the rib eye was perfectly prepared and delicious, the onion rings good and the creamed spinach the equal of any other steak oriented establishment. On top of that, they had a very reasonably priced wine list. The service is friendly and relaxed with a professional staff that seemed to have aged along with the restaurant. The atmosphere is casual, dark, dated, in a nice way, and the woody interior has worn well over the years. The neighborhood isn't the best, but there is a parking lot in back and, once inside, the location is irrelevant. In LA one drives everywhere anyway so what difference does it make? I do not consider it to be on the level of a Palm, Ruth's Chris or Mortons, but it is very good and literally half the price.

A classic steakhouse

By Michael Z |

I went here with a friend of mine in need of a good american steak. The neighborhood isn´t the best and what seemed like a good idea after reading reviews online was more and more in doubt as we came closer. However - we quickly found parking across the street and got a seat after only waiting a couple of minutes in the bar. The U shaped sofa was very classical, but also comfortable. The interiors of the restaurant looks like a different (lost?) world compared to the streets and neighborhood outside. We went straight to the main course and ordered culote and ribeye. Both steaks were cooked to perfection. Juice and tender with a lot of taste. The baked potatoes were unbelievably light and fluffy and not at all compact or dry as they often are. We had mushroms and texas glaced onions as sides. Both were good, but I prefer my mushrooms to be cooked a bit longer to get the more concentrated taste. The service was good, but not extraordinary. They did all that was required, but didn´t make us feel special in any way. Wouldn´t mind comming back on another occasion or recommending the restaurant to a friend.

Romantic dinner

By Vanessa M |

Great ambience, great food. Drinks were okay, not consistent. We each had a margarita and they tasted different. The NuNu was not good, replaced it with a margarita. Also be clear what you're ordering. They will upsell you without you realizing it. Service was super fast, we had a reservation though

Old School Charm

By Larissa75 |

This is one of the oldest steak houses in Los Angeles and unapologetically so. Dark, charming, old Hollywood... you can just imagine the stars from the past sitting in the red booths, sipping on martinis. If you don't eat meat don't waste your time. If you like steak you will be in heaven. The fact that the prices are as reasonable as they are shocks me!

great old school Los Angeles steak house

By Jack V |

this is one of LA's oldest and most iconic restaurants. the beef, french fries, shrimp, salads and baked potato were all quite tasty. our group ordered 4 different cuts of meat and they were all cooked to perfection. the prices are also much like the prices at every other high - end beef place. they have a really good wine list but on the expensive side. the service is pretty good as most of the wait staff has been around for years. the place is quite lively and packed. the sat night we went had 2 full seatings and then some. the bar is a great place to grab a seat and a steak if all of the seats are filled. the place is a little old and dark but still very old school charming.

Old school charm and great meal

By MKB1701 |

Came here for dinner on a Friday night in July for the nice meal of our LA trip and everyone left very satisfied. Service was top-notch, and from my filet to the strips and the dry aged steak my friends had everything was on the mark. Sides came with the meal and appetizers were excellent. The room is older as most guests have described; it's straight out of the 60's as a matter of fact. The low ceilings also make it a bit louder than most places so if you are looking for a modern vibe or a quiet intimate setting this isn't it. Drinks were reasonably priced - all and all, I was very pleased. Would come back again.

Classic Old School Steakhouse with Sometimes Slow Service but Great Food and Ambience

By SJC Lawyer |

My husband, daughter, and I visited Taylor’s after attending a Sunday matinee at The Pantages. It reminded me of the restaurants my dad would take us to growing up. We loved it. The atmosphere was old-school, classic steakhouse, Our Alaskan King Salmon with butter caper sauce and fresh bread was delicious. The server was very polite with a beautiful smile. Our only complaint is that she would disappear for long periods of time. We arrived early, before our 4:30 reservation, and the restaurant was not yet that busy. We will definitely visit again.

Spectacularly old school

By Dawn H |

My husband surprised me on Valentine's Day by finding an authentic old-Los Angeles steakhouse that I'd never even heard of, much less visited. It was perfect, from the subdued lighting and red leatherette banquettes to the perfectly balanced Manhattans and wonderful filet mignon. Our server, Preya (sorry if I spelled that incorrectly), added every perfect touch by being attentive without hovering, finding us a candle for our table and making a couple of great suggestions as we were choosing what to order. My steak was perfect, the creamed spinach exactly what you expect it to be and the wedge salad was delightfully chilled (although we did want the bacon that it did not have). Taylor's has kept everything you want in a throw-back to the LA I grew up in.

Good Food. Make a Reservation!

By Ashley J |

My husband has been wanting to go here for awhile and we finally did! We didn’t have a reservation (and they were overbooked), so we ended up eating at the bar. He had the Pepper Sirloin (with mashed potatoes) and really enjoyed it. I had the crab cakes (one of the daily specials) and they were very good. The baked potato and the French onion soup were decent, but the drink (Long Island iced tea) was overpriced ($14) for the size and was weak. Will probably go back again and try something else on the menu.

Average steakhouse!

By Adam G |

PROS: Good quality of meat. I tried their "famous" Culotte: it was a pretty big peace of good filet, but nothing else. The place is cozy and warm. Try to avoid tables near the bar, it's loud and dark. Some people just come to watch the game and get drunk. We didn't like: 1st surprise when you get there: $3,5 valet parking. 2nd surprise: we booked a table for 8pm and got it at 8:25 (they offered us free chips for the wait!). No draft beer / Overpriced bottled beer. Poor service. They serve your steaks on a plancha and it still cooks... If you like your meat rear like me, you'd better ask for an extra plate.

Please remove the sign up front which says "DRESS CODE"

By John M |

The food was pretty good, especially the meat. We returned the creamed spinach which was over salted. I was a guest of my uncle who insisted I wear a coat and tie as there was a dress code. After we were seated two more parties arrived - tee shirts and jeans, one with "flip flops" rather than shoes. Taylors either needs to remove their sign or enforce what it says, period. A fine dining experience should be respected and special, not a tee shirt evening.

It's Gotten Pricier But Still Worth It

By junnyd2018 |

I have been coming here for more than 25 years. The atmosphere is very upbeat tho never too noisy. When I first started coming here the prices were ridiculously low for superior quality food. In the past 2 years I've been here about 4 times and I have noticed the prices climb very steadily. Twenty four dollars for a 'dinner' cut of prime rib is a bit steep considering it comes only with a potato or rice. Service is always friendly but they can get bogged down occasionally. All in all, it is still a very worthwhile place to visit. For me, it will be more of a special occasion place as opposed to a regular haunt due to the pricing.

"Old School" Steak house... Delish!

By E9N20 |

What have we found here ? I cannot believe this old school steak house is sitting so close to me, and has been here since 1953. Tucked away near the border of Korea Town and downtown Los Angeles. Well... we have been having a "selective hunger" for some animal protein of the cow variety for a week. So I jumped on Open Table and found this gem. Made a rez, for Saturday night and counted the days. Uber'd to Taylor's (had no idea where it was, we read 8th street and figured it was just downtown). Walked in, observed all the wood and leather booths packed with people.. good choice so far.. Martini's blanketed the bar. Bottles of vino on the tables. As we entered, there were people waiting to be seated. I approached the host, he checked my rez and we were seated immediately. Smiles and drinks every where. Loved the fact that the crowd was a little bit of everyone. Some in black tie with there dates, some in SoCal casual, some in there " got to run to the supermarket" attire. Our table for two was smack dab in the middle of the room. Atmosphere was cool, good vibes all around. The Food (appetizer) : 1. Jumbo Maine scallops in a blanket of bacon. The sauce that they serve with the scallops is dbl delish. 2. Martini's for each The Food (main course) : 1. Main courses consisted of : NY strip (med rare), Filet mignon (med), fries, sauteed garlic spinach. 2. Bottle of vino to wash it down Fantastic bargain, great service, cool atmosphere and the cow was done proud! D E L I S H... We will be back.

Our 34th Anniversary

By Cape-SoCal |

Let me begin by saying that the food and service were good. Not let me voice my EXTREME DISPLEASURE with ownership. I was given 2 50 dollar gift cards as a gift. Nowhere does it say that they can only be used at the La Canada location. We live in Pasadena and had theater tickets at the Ahmanson so we thought let’s go eat at the down town location. The GM was useless and there should be NO REASON that the same ownership will take the cards at one location and not the other. I entertain constantly and I will never go to this restaurant again. I will tell as many people as I can that they are a total rip off. What should have been a great night and it was was tainted by idiots that couldn’t even spell customer service. I do not recommend this restaurant because their ethics are questionable. Be well.

Very average

By carol c |

When you eat and have a drink at the bar at Taylor's, the bar tender demands payment for each drink right away. Unusual, unless they have the type of people that drink and run. The steak was good, the baked pot. was old tasting, probably microwaved. The service was good, but the wine list was the worst anyone could imagine in a popular California eatery. They need to have more choice and some high end wine, in decent wine glasses. It makes such a difference.

Pretty good but have had better

Traditional, old school steakhouse. Above average food but have had better.

Steak out

By Sky051 |

I arrived as a solo diner. I was taken up two floors to a room so dark I had to switch the torch app on my phone to read the menu. Dark red leather booths surrounded the room which was set out for a large birthday party which attended later. Very friendly, attentive staff and a delicious melt in the mouth steak. The fries were a little limp but it was all about the meat and a very large glass of Merlot. You would never think it the restaurant is as large as it is from the outside. All it needed was Al Pacino and the evening would have been complete.

Disgusting

By dick c |

Absolutely terrible that we booked a table 1 month in advance for our trip LA.It was a trip of a lifetime for my girls we traveled all the way from Spain to start a dream holiday then traveled from one side of Hollywood to the other only to find when we arrived at the restaurant it was closed. It is an a disgrace that they can not be bothered to E-mail their clients. Its a shame we cannot give a minus star rating. But a big thanks to Denney's (union station )great meal, they saved our thanks giving holiday.

Food is mediocre but great vibe

By CDNgirl1230 |

As far as steakhouses go, I don't think Taylor's is better than average. I think what people really go here for is the atmosphere. Servers are lovely, place is busy and has that old, cozy atmosphere. As out-of-towners, the neighborhood where they're located was kind of uncomfortable for us. Definitely wouldn't have wanted to walk around there after dinner.

Old School Steakhouse...

This place has been around for years and though it's lineage and location isn't as classy as Musso and Frank's, it serves up great steaks and chops at a slightly cheaper price point. Sure it's on a dodgy strip of 8th Street in Koreatown, but they have valet parking, an accomplished wait staff and fine cuts of prime beef. They don't have a ton of options if you aren't a meat eater, so bad for vegetarians, and I found their fish choices to be limited as well. But if grilled meat is your thing, this is the place for you.

Great Place To Go Before A Show At The Wiltern Theater

By Michelle P |

Our hotel, Hotel Normandie LA, recommended Taylor's Steakhouse for a nice dinner before an evening show at the Wiltern Theater. We were not disappointed. Since we went early at 5:30pm, we beat the rush. We got a nice booth and the wait staff was very attentive. We got the culotte steak and the filet mignon. The steaks were cooked perfectly to our order. The fries and mashed potatoes were very nice. They have a good wine list and a tempting dessert tray. This is an excellent place to dine while staying in Koreatown or if you are in the area for a show at the Wiltern Theater. We loved the comfortable big leather booths which make for a romantic evening. Just a heads up that it is dimly lit for the romantic atmosphere so be prepared to use the flashlight app on your phone to read the menu.

Friendly and unpretentious

By Leo G |

No pretense. No huffy waitstaff. Just good food moderately priced served in an old school velvet and banquette setting. My favorites are the Molly dinner salad with the Taylor's dinner steak. We have rented their back room and have hosted parties of six or eight - always satisfied with the service and price. Taylor's is a steakhouse for the working class who wants a great meal with courteous service and a check that will not require a stimulus package to rectify.

Steakhouse like in the 70s but very good

By Traveller worldwide |

It doesn't get more American than this: you sit in a wood-paneled room with dimmed lighting on semi-circular patent leather benches. The steaks - and you shouldn't eat anything else here - are excellent, as are the side dishes and wines. All at reasonable, i.e. appropriate prices. So definitely worth planning on visiting LA.

Always a great reasonably priced meal.

By Robert042 |

I go to Taylor's at least once a month. Don't need a special occasion I go because it is there and has been for a long time. Never a bad experience.

Back in time but great steaks

By SkyriderNL |

We came in quite early so it was relatively quite. When you enter, it feels like you used a time machine and went back five or six decades. Very friendly and patient staff. These people know steaks! Absolutely mouthwatering!

Authentic steakhouse

By iris B |

Great choice of steaks at reasonable prices. Dinners come with a potato selection. There are also ala carte sides available. Our table had the Culotte, New York , and skirt steaks. Everyone really enjoyed their steaks. They even offer a vegetarian plate with a selection of veggies/potato. Ambience was perfect for good conversation and service was excellent. There is valet parking at a very reasonable price. We will definitely return.

My phone was stolen at this restaurant. DO NOT recommend.

By Samantha S |

I had dinner with my friends at this restaurant and when we left (after restaurant closure) I left my phone on the table. There were only 3 costumers left in the restaurant. I live 1.1 miles away and when I realized I had left my phone behind I drove back to pick it up (I tried calling but because the restaurant had already closed nobody picked up). I come back to pick up and one of the bus boys accused another patron of stealing my phone. Problem is his poor patron - could not have seen my phone on the table as this is a low dimmed atmosphere. Phone was gone. On Christmas day Fing My iPhone FINDS MY PHONE AROUND EAST LA in a section 8 area. I contacted the owner who said he would "investigate." A month later I never heard back from him. DO NOT RECOMMEND. Because of one person, I will never come back and make sure all my friends and family do not either. i would NEVER expect my phone to be stolen at such a high end restaurant. Being shocked and disappointed.

You will not disappointed

Second time here it’s a fine dining experience in an old world setting. Steaks fantastic & reasonably priced. Ladies bring a cardigan as rather chilly inside. John the Duty Manager was very pleasant & keen to know we were happy with the service.

GREAT ATMOSPHERE

By DarrylG |

I came as a visitor from Australia with a local friend who had promised -- and delivered -- a superb dining experience. The steaks were cooked to perfection, the wine list extensive and service excellent. I also loved the atmosphere. Although I haven't been to a New York steakhouse I am informed this is quite similar.

TAYLOR'S STILL HAS WHAT IT TAKES--- GREAT STEAK!

By aresverde |

It had been almost 15 years since I dined at Taylors. A good friend suggested a trip down memory lane. Last night 8 of us feasted, toasted each other and had a wonderful time. They put us in the private wine room, We brought great wines--old Rhones, Bordeaux, Calicab, SuperTuscan and Australian Shiraz--perfect juice for a steak dinner--with bookends of bubbly for opener and sauternes for closer. We had a dedicated server and busser. All was perfect and God was in "her" heaven! The traditional American steak house lives on in Taylors! We enjoyed shrimp and escargot appetizers, great salads, and steaks, oh the steaks--the famous Culotte, and the tasty bone-ins--filets, rib-eyes, New York and Porterhouse. All served perfectly done. The baked potatoes filled with butter and topped with sour cream and chives, are to die for. We took some home. Great sides of shrooms, black-eyed peas, corn stripped from cob, etc. Desserts were retro-cheese cake and chocolate cake. All in all a memorable night. Worth the trip to almost downtown and then struggling to find parking. Bravo Taylors!

I love this place !!! Great place !!!! Top !!!!

Dear reader: I'm traveling a lot and Los Angeles is one of my favorite destination for the last 30 years, but unfortunately I have found Taylor's Steakhouse just yesterday by coincidence (thanks to Google) and now it will be my Nr. 1 Steakhouse place for all my upcoming LAX returns! The restaurant is located in Korea town, close to downtown! You can do street parking or valet parking (3,50$). The staff is super friendly and professional (old school in a very charming and nice way) and the place is dark (wonderful atmosphere) and super clean (incl. the washrooms)! Regarding the food: 5 ***** stars !!!! Super meat, super side dishes, super fair prices and the taste is marvelous and yummy!!! As you can read, I'm still flashed and believe me: I've seen a lot places worldwide! Our waitress Dolly was very kind, customer focused and just charming! Adorable person! Overhaul a place to visit and enjoy the special "old style", "old school" interior atmosphere, which will catch you right upon arrival! To Taylor's Steakhouse: keep on going that way and please have always a table for me !! ;-)) I will recommend your place to all my travel buddies and airline friends !

No expectations, no disappointments

By jerock |

Glad we made a reservation and came early evening - it got busy & loud shortly after. Small valet parking lot. Haven't been back in 20 yrs. Still nice ambience, great hot sourdough loaf (was the best item of the dinner). I remembered Taylor's signature Culotte steak being juicy and full of flavor. This was not either. It was overdone more than the medium rare I ordered while the fries were underdone. Ordinarily, I would have sent both back, but since it took so long to arrive, was too hungry to wait another 20 minutes. My guest ordered the smaller Culotte medium so its likely the Cook mixed up the order since it looked more rare than mine. Seems like its increasingly more difficult to find a good steak then in the old days. Even the superior Hitching Post near Solvang isn't as good as it used to be. Make an early reservation and make sure they get your order right. The waiters are pros and work hard. With one beer plus tip for 2 came to $130. Not like the old days.

Old reliable

The three partners who own and run Channel 70 Video Productions are all 60+ and enjoy the old ways. Taylor's provides the quality food, service, and wonderful atmosphere of yesteryear. We can't get enough of this place.

One of the oldest and best in Los Angeles

By lacarpool |

Aged grilled Bone in Rib eye last night hit the sweet spot in my dinner experience. We always eat at the bar although the eatery reeks of old Los angeles on Eighth and Ardmore surrounded by Korean Restaurants and Korean BBQ's. The squat brick building is over 50 years old and has all the trappings of old L.A. The steaks are the prize buy they are cooked to perfection and a must accompaniment is their famous "Molly Salad" In fact all you need is the molly plus your steak choice and you've filleted the tank. the servers and bartender are old employees over the years. Old in tenure, not age. Try their perfectly mixed martini. Enjoy

Old time classic steak house

By 356benhere |

Got there on a Friday night with a reservation. They have parking which is mandatory in this area of town. Got seated right away, although it was at a table in the bar area. All others were full. A little noisy, but if you like people watching it is fine. This place is a throw back to steak housed of old, and the reason we went there. Service was a little slow to start, but our wait person came over and apologized for the delay. All in all she was excellent. Started out with a couple of drinks as it had been a long day. We split a large salad before steaks. I had a NY strip with crispy onions, and my wife had a filet. They were both fine, but not memorable. Wine list was reasonable with an adequate selection.

Good steak

The steak was so good with reasonable price. Thay cooked in medium which I want. Environment was old fashioned with dark brightness. But they changed brightness in a short time when we want.

This is what a Steak House feels like

By Plumeria D |

Love this place and I am sorry I've been in LA for 25 years and haven't eaten here. I've been to the trendy steakhouses, newly built and designed, with terrible acoustics, expensive drinks, and very expensive (although delicious) steak. I far prefer the experience I had at Taylor's. First, you enter a dark paneled bar and can see the big leather booths from there. The ceiling is low, which means it is blissfully pleasant to talk to your dining companions, even when the room gets full of happy diners. Second, the drink prices are great! A $7.00 bloody mary hits the spot at a steakhouse. There's was perfectly mixed. Third, there are plenty of choices for everyone - of course, several steaks to choose from, prime rib, chicken, fish, and lamb (which was a special). The dry aged, bone in new york strip was great, but do note that dry aged will be more expensive (but still a lot better than the trendy Beverly Hills steakhouses). Service was good, everyone enjoyed their food. My ceasar salad was a bit too wet, but the baked potato was perfection! I also felt the coffee was especially good, something that is normally not that great. If you are looking for a good steak, better prices, and would prefer to leave the trendy, muddled drinks across town, this is a perfect place to have a good meal, conversation, and reminisce about bygone Los Angeles.

The Best!

This place reminds me of a great New York steakhouse. Dark lighting, great bar, and most of all the food is seriously good comfort food. A regular stop for me.

Unmatched atmosphere

By Marina G |

You and your date walk in without a reservation. You're told that it'll be a 20 to 30 minute wait until they can seat you. But, you're welcome to wait at the bar. You figure, "I've been told this place is solid. So, let's grab a drink and wait it out." The bartender asks you what you're having. Your date orders a glass of rose. Wine is more of a mealtime thing for you. So, you opt for your go to. "Beefeater martini. Extra dirty, please." The bartender nods in approval and prepares your drinks. After the requisite wait, you're shown to your table. The server invites you to look through the menu, but also is happy to share the specials of the day with you. You look the menu over, but you and your date decide to order the Tomahawk steak for two. Medium. Some creamed spinach and mashed potatoes on the side. You're more of a Malbec kind of person, but your date nudges you toward a nice Pinot Noir. Either way, there is no way to go wrong. There are no wrong choices here. The acidity of the red wine helps cleanse the palette for each bite of perfectly prepared meat. The spinach and potatoes a perfect accompaniment to the serenade of the meal. And that's why you've come here. For the food. For the drink. For the atmosphere.

Throwback but the steak was excellent

By Steve D |

It's dark, wood paneled and looks like something out of the movie LA Confidential. But the steak is excellent - well cooked, served hot. The service is right on. Way better than it looks from the outside.

Always a great place for a steak

By 4EIEIO |

I have been coming here for over 30 years and have always been treated to a great meal with excellent service. As I got a bit older I was able to add that they pour a good drink here as well. Stop by and enjoy.

What happened to what was a favorite restaurant of mine

By Stan K |

What happened to the food. This used to be a mainstay restaurant for me when I am in the area. I haven't been there in awhile, and won't be returning. The so called prime London broil was so chewy it was unswallowable. I had to spit out on the bread plate. It was cooked medium rare. All of the slices were inedible. The mashed potatoes were undercooked and had the taste of raw potato. The meal was taken off of my check but It was a disgusting experience and my last one at Taylor's after 25 years of eating there. This is no longer a restaurant that maintains high quality.

Excellent for the Price

By A_Fellow_Pilgrim |

We had the top of the line steak, which was excellent especially for the price. The atmosphere is old fashioned and what one would expect. The service was excellent. We asked to be seated on the first floor of the restaurant, which is more atmospheric, and got what we wanted after a short cocktail wait. It can be a little hit and miss, but, I've been going there many years without a problem that bothered me. The food is usually great, but, if it isn't and if one's polite about it, they do seem to do their best to sort things out, e.g. steak undercooked. Likewise with the service. In Los Angeles, Ruth's Chris is, for me, probably the place for the best steak. But it can be a lot more expensive than Taylor's and Taylor's is a fun and more informal place to go, especially with a group of friends.

Old World Charm

By jjjv2 |

I've been to Taylor's a few times for lunch and have never been let down. The food, service and decor just can't be beat. Two favorites are the London Broil and the Crab Cakes on the lunch menu, but you really can't go wrong with anything here.

L.A.'s Best Old-School Steakhouse

By aresverde |

My friends and I love coming here for wine and food. We reserve the private dining room, set a wine theme and pair our wines with this old-school steakhouse fare: jumbo shrimp cocktails, lettuce wedges or Caesar salads, fries, onion rings, baked potatoes, shrooms, braised veggies, and red meat--steak heavenly steak-- filets, bone-ins and just good old-fashioned other cuts of beef. I had delicious bone-in rib-eye. Perfectively cooked and presented. Service was excellent--well-paced, efficient, friendly. Price points are good. All-in this was a most pleasant dining experience.

Great steak

Nothing to look at from the outside but a fine dining last century ambiance on the inside. The steak was fantastic as was the martini and prices were very reasonable. Would definitely return.

Good Steak and Not Too Expensive

By ToddHata |

I lived in DTLA for a couple years and never made it here, was moving my business out of the area and finally decided to give it a try before I left. The prices are very reasonable, service was great, nice atmosphere. The steak wasn't bad, not great or the best I've had, but on par with the price. It's better than the average steakhouse, much better than many others I've had, but just not good enough for me to go back again.

Very enjoyable dining experience...

By Tom S |

I dined at Taylor's Steakhouse - just yesterday with a good friend of mine. She lives in the area and I am about 1-hour away. We made reservations, had out cars valet parked... We found the menu pricing to be appropriate and fair. Our waiter could not have been more friendly or attentive. My steak was delicious and her seafood entree - equally delicious. It's quite dark in the restaurant and reading the menu is difficult. I would recommend a candle votive in the center of each table "or" that the lighting be brought up just a bit. Very enjoyable dining experience in the "heart" of Los Angeles and Korea Town. I would absolutely dine there again. Thank you...

Great value for a steakhouse, classic ambience

By Greg C |

Classic old school LA steakhouse. Location is super odd, as its a bit 'scary' yet also in Koreatown, and not where you would expect to find an legendary steakhouse. Most modern steakhouses give you a steak for $50 and anything after that like a potato or creamed spinach is another $9 to $12 dollars. Taylor's is still affordable (probably because unlike most restaurants they own the building), and you get a steak and potato for one price. Cocktails are also not comically expensive like most places. An LA legend for a reason. Good quality steaks at a very reasonable price.

Good place for a romantic dinner

By aaron s |

The dimmed lighting set the mood for a romantic dinner. The vibe was of an old school steakhouse. The steak was good, however the portion size wasn't what i was expecting/hoping for a nice steakhouse. I ordered fries as my side to my steak, should have ordered the mashed or baked potato, I would guess I only received about half a potato's worth of fries. My girlfriend ordered the mashed potato's and those were excellent....and she got a large serving too!

Old School Charm

By catbruin |

It feels like an episode of the Sopranos-red banquettes, wait staff that has been here forever, and great steaks at a great price. It's not fancy and the sides are what you expect however everthing is expertly prepared and the price is right. After a day touring Hollywood with out of town family, it was the perfect place for everyone.

Great Meal

By IFAE60 |

Last place I had dinner during my trip to LA, right after I drove to LAX to fly back home to the east coast. The waiters were friendly and very polite. The atmosphere was very laid back and comfortable. Decor was old school style and I didnt mind it. The food was pretty good and when you take the price into account its a very worthwhile meal.

Nice ambience, average food, bit slow

By Arnab B |

Went for dinner as we were staying just a block away and wanted a change from Korean. Week night but the place was fairly busy at 8 PM, although we didn't have to wait to be seated. The place is nicely done up albeit a bit dimly lit. Nice comfy chairs to sit in. Our orders took quite a long time to show up - longer than I'd expect at a place like this. Perhaps due to the number of guests already seated. One of us ordered the salmon but then we were informed that there wasn't any left so the order was changed - but the salmon accidentally showed up on our bill. I ordered the ground sirloin - it was a bit crunchy on the outside but rarer on the inside, felt like not quite evenly cooked. Service was good, but the food didn't live up to the price.

Don't believe the 4 or 5 star reviews: AWFUL

By donald w |

This may be one of the worst restaurant experiences I've had in years. We eat out a lot, have lived in LA for 40 years and have been fortunate enough to dine at most of LA's finest restaurants and local spots. I had never been to Taylor's and was excited to try it and took my niece for her birthday. The Ceasar salad was an abomination of a salad and the croutons were so disgusting that we compared the taste to the smell of the cleaning puck you put in your toilet tank to turn the water blue. Next, the mashed potatoes came out fridge cold. They warmed them up (sloppily) and they were still luke warm and tasted like... well... not much of anything to be honest. My nieces filet mignon was supposed to be medium and came out fully medium rare to rare. My Culotte was supposed to be medium rare to rare and was full on medium. They shined a light on it and said it was medium rare.... I'm the guy who uses a thermometer to ensure steaks turn out perfectly every time. This was a solidly medium steak. Both steaks were under salted and bland and my niece had to saw at her filet mignon like it was cardboard. Honestly, the only thing good about the meal was the peppercorn sauce and the steak fries. This place should have closed years ago and lives on because of 20 year old reviews. Our meal was $200 and for that I expect a decent college try at good. I think a lot of tourists or people from surrounding southern California areas where good restaurants are few and far in between come here because of the hype and review it well. Oh... the service was totally mediocre as well. Our server was nice enough, but totally incompetent. If you are in LA and looking for a restaurant, you will be way way better served at the food trucks outside Taylors than going in and you will save $175 while you are at it. Seriously... This is a place to avoid at all costs.

A Good Steakhouse Feel And Good Service....but that's it

By JCW703 |

I was generally disappointed with my ribeye. Was there anything wrong with it, no- it was cooked properly and marbled, but it was cut thin and was also bland. For the price point, I think Outback would probably have a more flavorful piece of meat. All of that being said, we had a fantastic server and were very well taken care of.

Only Dean Martin was missing!

The perfect cocktail, your choice of steaks, choice of potatoes and a red leather booth. What else do you need?

A classy and reasonable steakhouse.

By James C |

My first experience at Taylor’s Steakhouse was consistent with most of the past reviews , a true 4 star and $$$ dollar rating restaurant. A nice restaurant that we would recommend to friends and we will return to again. LOCATION at 3.5 stars: Getting to this place if you are not use to dense Los Angeles traffic during dinner hours can be frazzling, so many cars on the road and pedestrians on foot! Plan to add 10 minutes to your drive time due to traffic congestion during the peak dinner hours. We checked for street parking but it was non-existent so we drove into the restaurant’s valet, a reasonable $3.50 fee for the convenience and security. The restaurant has a very nice appearance from the outside, it probably has the nicest looking exterior in the area. AMBIANCE at 4 stars: This is no hole in the wall or dive restaurant. We did not know what to expect since the interior pictures taken by prior reviewers are grainy due to low lighting. You walk in and take an immediate right where the hostess is to check in. There really is no waiting area so make reservations and be there on time. To the left of the hostess is the bar that runs about 25 feet long and that opens up into the main dining area which to me looks like about 500 square feet, a modest sized place. Most of the seating are scalloped shaped booths good for a group of 4 or less, we did not sit in one since we had a party of 5 so we were seated on a table in the center of the dining area. What hit us when we walked in was a fishy smell not the aroma of beef, a bit unexpected but not too unpleasant. The interior décor, comfortable seating, air temperature, and lighting is effective, you feel very relaxed as soon as your eyes adjust to the dimness. This was the first restaurant where my wife did not complain about feeling cold. The noise level is medium due to background conversations and laughter from other patrons, this is not a candle light quiet place. There is no background music, this is a place to eat! FOOD at 4.5 stars: Since this place was known for beef, we all ordered bone-in rib eye steaks, cooked medium rare to medium. We also ordered crab cakes and calamari as appetizers and sides of mashed potatoes, mushrooms, and creamed spinach. The calamari tasted great but it is not listed on the menu, you have to know about it or be told by your server that they have it. All the side dishes were spot on, well prepared and delicious especially those creamy mash potatoes. The crab cakes and steaks were under seasoned but I prefer this than a dish that is over salted, they have table salt and a pepper grinders at your table to use. Our server told us that their steaks are dry aged and Prime. Prime? It appears that this is the upper grade for beef by the USDA, Costco sells prime rib eye steaks for about $18.99 per pound, I could not tell the difference between the restaurant’s steak and what I would grill at home with the Costco stuff, both are good for different reasons. SERVICE at 4.5 stars: We arrived about 15 minutes before our reservations and was seated as soon as they could set up our table, this was nice of them to accommodate us. Our server was Dory, she was prompt, pleasant, and professional but she was also busy and not as attentive as she could be. This to me is fine since there were other servers filling our water glasses and we asked them for drink refills and more bread when we needed. Food timing was good, all the main dishes came at the same time. The level of service here is good and almost with a folksy warmth. PRICING at 4 stars: Our tab for a party of 5 after tax was about $296 (before the tip) for 2 cocktails, 2 lemonades, 2 appetizers, steaks for 5, side dishes, and 1 carrot cake to be shared. This was about $54 per person, not cheap but reasonable and they offered us no kids menu. Yes, you can go to a place like Norms for a lot cheaper or easily spend 3 times as much at Morton’s Steakhouse but like anything in life, there are trade-offs. Our family went out for dinner to celebrate a wedding anniversary, we enjoyed our food, and had a wonderful time that we will remember – yes, it was worth it to us. Other things to know: There is a dress code sign at the entrance so don’t go there in beach attire and expect to be served, most of the patrons looked like they just got off work at their office on this Friday night.

Classic old time steak house w good martinis and average meat

By Terry S |

The atmosphere is classic steakhouse from the 1950's. At any moment you expect Sinatra to walk in and go to his table and order for his buddies. The martinis are made with expert care - no fancy mixologist trying to talk you into a sage smoked version of something. The staff - could not be nicer But this is, as one would expect a good place for a meal and you know what you are going to get and they do a good job of it. The meat is ok - it isn't special aged for a thousand days, it is just good steak - which in the modern era of places aging beef forever and concentrating flavor, is fine. They do a good job. This is a place you go for the ambiance - It won't disappoint you.

Classic Steakhouse A Trip to the Past

By Robert S |

Steakhouses are a c-note a dozen in Los Angeles, but Taylor's has been around downtown for 60 years, and although the surrounding neighborhood has seen better days, the restaurant has parking, so you won't have to walk the streets. Inside is a steakhouse that might have been frozen in time circa 1965, with Naugahyde banquettes, brick and wood walls, and crusty waiters. The menu is classic steakhouse too. Credible versions of shrimp cocktails, wedge and caesar salads, twice-baked potatoes, creamed spinach and of course, meat. The specialty s a culotte steak, which, depending who you ask, is either a rib-eye cap or top sirloin cap steak. Whatever it is, it's beefy, a little bit of a chew and full of flavor. This is not a cut you'll find a most other steakhouses. I've enjoyed the culotte twice and also had the New York Strip, and on my first trip there, a special Porterhouse for Two that was amazing. I believe that as far as steak goes, thicker is better, so big steaks are just better steaks. They offer Prime Rib, and it is good, but there are other places where you can do as well or better, and for non-carnavores they offer Halibut and some nice-looking crab cakes, but frankly, I have never tasted them. I am there for the meat. The desserts are the usual gooey stuff and brûlées, but if you have room for them you haven't ordered properly or shared too much. The best thing is that the price for your meal is also stuck in the last century. Getting a great steakhouse experience for under $60 per person makes the trip downtown worthwhile.

Still Great

By Taleen B |

I have been coming here for at least 15years.Still a all-time favorite. Food and service still excellent. Steak always cooked as specified, creamed spinach a classic still the very best! French Onion soup simply delicious. Fresh bread still awesome. A rare gem that has stayed true to their original standards of quality food and service. I always come here when I want to treat myself. Also compared to other steakhouse restaurants extremely less expensive but still high quality.

Out of way, but Great

By Kelly S |

When you are following GPS to get there, you are saying where am I. It looks like ghettoville. But when you reach your final destination you are relieved. All the steaks are seasoned perfect and you get more than enough to eat. Plus the service is excellent. Every good for the money.

OLD School.. but great.

By Jerry P |

Sometimes old school means it used to be good. But it is good.. it is old school and it is fun and delicious. Love the place and the martinis.. it is not one of those places with 1,000 wines.. but it is where you have your martini with you steak.

Completely surprised

By grandma4920 |

Concierge recommended this restaurant. Read the good reviews and went there. Cab dropped us off in the middle of this neighborhood being revitalized. Restaurant was a plain brick ugly bldg with a brown door. I thought here goes nothing. The only empty table was the one reserved for us. Fabulous menu, delicious food, reasonably priced and great service. Go there.

$98.00 Steak!

By natheg |

This restaurant has has always been an old school favorite of ours for decor, food, service and cocktails but with much sadness and frustration we will never, ever come here again. Our sons booked a table for Father's Day for all the above attributes. We ordered drinks and steaks with our youngest trying the "Tomahawk" at our waiter's suggestion. It was big we were told but came on a really big bone. As always our food was terrific and then the bill came. The "Tomahawk" steak was $98.00! Our son was mortified. Stupid us, it never occurred to ask about the cost of this steak. With all the other steaks costing about $36.00 a $62.00 difference just never entered our minds. The waiter must have been thrilled. What a coup. We played it down and I chipped in. But I was upset and wanted to share my frustration with Taylor's After repeated attempts to talk to a manager or Bruce- the owner, I have yet to get a call back. Apparently there is never a manager on site to take a call and Bruce has yet to return the messages I've left with the lovely girl who's taken my calls. The take a way is this: buyer beware at Taylor's- ask about prices and if you should want to share a concern with management know that they are not interested. Oh, and if your kids want to take you to dinner here- make sure you have some extra cash. It won't help them feel less crummy and embarrassed about not being able to cover the bill but it will get meal paid for. L.A. is a town teeming with fantastic steak houses- there's no reason to not bring our business to one of them. So Taylor's- you may have aced a $98.00 steak from us, but you've lost our love and devotion forever.

It's been awhile

Haven't dined here in quite some time. It is known for the Prime steaks and other chops. The portions were very generous. It was a very good place to go for work lunch.

Before concert dinner

This was a pleasant surprise in Korea Town. I like Korean barbecue but my family doesn't so when my wife found this place I was a little skeptical. It has that old style family steak house feel with the red leather booths and comfy high back chairs with dark wood everywhere. You can't beat this place for the price, service was great and the wine list is limited but good enough to hit every price point and reasonable to boot. Steaks were served nice and hot and cooked perfectly. If your in the area or going to an event at the nearby Wiltern Theater you should go. We didn't have reservations but only waited maybe 30 minutes so call ahead if you want to get seated right away.

Classic Steakhouse

Great small wedge salad prior to diving into a large piece of prime rib (the house cut) which was accompanied with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. Also had a couple of glasses of very nice merlot. Service very professional and attentive. This is a place that will take you back to the 40s or earlier with nice red leather booths.

Dark, crowded and expensive.

I was told that it was one of the great places in town for a steak. It wasn't true with my meal or anyone else at our table. My culotte steak was tough, almost tasteless and so was my friend's rib-eye. Our wives both ordered baby lamb chops and both said that they were good but not outstanding. Add that to the fact that the place was noisy, crowded and our table for four was so tiny that our knees touched made it worse. But the final thing that topped it off was something that seems to be popular today was it was so dark at our table you couldn't see what you were eating! And it wasn't just us, there were flashes of lights everywhere, as people held their cell phones over their plates, trying to see their food. We won't be back.

Very nice hidden gem

A co-worker suggested Taylor's and we went for lunch. Beautiful traditional steak house setting, lovely booths, nice bar, efficient servers, wonderful steaks. I want to go back soon.

This restaurant was really good. I had their Chilean sea bass along with a wonderfully prepared rib eye steak and mashed potatoes.

NOT WORTH THE MONEY

By Bill W |

Living in Los Angeles for 60 years, I thought it was time to try Taylors Steakhouse. It was a very unsatisfying experience. Initially, when I made the reservation on line, I put down that we were celebrating my 69th birthday. Not one word upon entering the restaurant nor on leaving. No desert with a candle. Small thing, but details count. Th calamari was overcooked and the over battered. The Caesar salad was a joke. It looked like it came from a bag and that they saved all of the old ends just for me. A Caesar salad should be made only from romaine heart and not the end leaves. The bread was stale. The steaks were ok but nothing special. Cream corn was also a disappointment. The best part was that after we refused a table in the bar, we were given the private wine room. Our service person was great. Will not be back

Old school and tasty...

Old school steakhouse...It's been here for 62 years and counting Located in Ktown with an eclectic clientele Parking is a challenge except they have inexpensive valet Dark dark dark on entering. Dim lights, dark woods and red booths tell me I'm in a real steakhouse. Service was excellent and food was good. It was lunch so we had a burger and a philly sandwich. Burger was large and cooked to order (med rare) Philly sandwich is not traditional but the meat is why you order it! Fries woulda been better if well-done I so wanna return for a dinner steak--probably the ribeye This is a yes yes

Back to an "old friend".

Twice recently I've had the opportunity to go to Taylor's after almost forgetting about it for a couple of years. First time - two months ago was for my anniversary - and it was wonderful - great Steak Diane - which is my favorite. Second time (just a few weeks ago) we went to a birthday dinner there - 8 of us on a Saturday night. They put us in a great location, the cocktails were wonderful and even though they don't have Steak Diane on this night - the chef made it special and it was GREAT!!! So were the French Fries. Everyone loved their dinner and a we had a wonderful birthday celebration. The atmosphere was very lively - it's a very diverse place and people of all ages - a happy scene.

Overpriced

Nice cosy old style steakhouse. Steak was average, not a good cut. Peppercorn sauce was ok if a little weird. One glass of wine, the house Cabernet, was $21.50. Which if it was an expensive glass I wouldn’t necessarily mind BUT it was poured from 3 open bottles of wine. That is a rip off. No one should charge that amount of money for a house glass of dregs.

Great dinner to cap off a week of hard work

Great food at mid-range prices for a steakhouse in a large city. The bacon wrapped scallops were amazing. The Coulotte steak was flavorful, cooked perfectly and paired well with asparagus with Hollandaise sauce. FYI - The Scotch pours are triples-quads at double prices. The place was cozy but not cramped, has comfortable tall backed-seats and booths for seating downstairs. I never made it upstairs. They claim to have a dresscode, however we saw many folks who didn't adhere; I reckon it's more a chance for them to dismiss those deemed inappropriate. Definitely recommend reservations; we called ahead on our way there for a 6:45 table. They began to fill up towards the end of our dinner.

Neighborhood Legend

Been there for 57+ years for good reason! Great steak at great prices. No pretense, just history and hearty fare. Old time steak house atmosphere - complete with red leather booths and a bar that knows how to make any mixed drink on the planet. Competent, friendly service from a staff that has been doing it for years and still pays enthusiastic attention to detail. A real neighborhood gem!

Wonderful Old-School Steakhouse

Taylor's is awesome! The steaks are great quality and cooked to perfection! The staff is friendly and informative. The prices are very reasonable for a steakhouse of this quality.

Great dinner!

We were staying in Wilshire to attend a show at the Wiltern Theatre and were able to just walk from our hotel to the restaurant. Make sure you have a flashlight on your phone otherwise you can't even read the menu -- really dark!! Ambiance of a real, old fashioned steakhouse (which is what it is exactly!). Food was great and an amazing price! We split fried halibut and prime rib and with a glass of wine each was only about $80. Very reasonable for a nice meal.

Good Food...Great Atmosphere!

A fabulous atmosphere with fantastic steaks

My husband booked this restaurant back in the UK for my 50th birthday. We were staying at Universal so got a taxi there. It cost about $30 each way but was well worth it. The restaurant was dark and atmospheric and the food was sumptuous. The waiter was friendly and they even did me a dessert with a candle for my birthday.
