Great food on the costly side - good experience overall

By Cristiano |

We went to Tenno Sushi for dinner on a Monday. We had a great experience. When we arrived there was a few people waiting to be seated, but we did not have to wait and we had our meal at the bar, which was not an issue at all. Atmosphere The place feels nice, it was not too loud or crowded. We were not rushed and it felt like a pleasant evening. Food The sushi was really good, we mostly had the Philadelphia Rolls, with Salmon, cucumber, philadelphia and avocado. It was delicious. Although, out of three orders of the same product, one came significantly smaller than the previous two. So, not very consistent. We also had a rainbow roll and a shrimp tempura which were great and tasty. The negative part was the seaweed salad, it arrived frozen solid and mounted a very unpleasant surprise. Service The staff was friendly and the food was served really quickly. We were at the bar and we could see our options being prepared by the sushiman Jason with a lot of expertise, that added a layer of fun to our meal. Additionally, he asked a couple of times if everything was fine. He did an excellent work. We were close to the register and the staff at that station was a bit less professional in their posture and conversations, however, nothing too important. In general we were served adequately. Price We paid around 85$ for a meal for two, over a 100$ with the tips. However, we were benefited by a happy hour promotion that is active all day Monday. During the happy hour, the prices are OK, not fantastic, but in line with some restaurants of this kind in LA. Outside the happy hour, we consider it to be a bit pricey. Overall I would recommend this place. It will cost you around 50$ per meal, but the food is high quality and the restaurant is quite pleasant.

Amazing!

Sort of off the beaten path from Little Tokyo, but definitely worth a visit! Super clean. Spacious and nicely lit, there is a sushi bar that seats 13. Tables are nicely placed so as to not be/feel 'squished'. Very attentive staff who will make great suggestions that are always spot-on. Great drinks selection. Portions are generous. I can't wait to go back!!

Good sushi place

Place has good sushi and prices are just right. It's a good place to spend an evening with friends or family. Probably not the best sushi place in town but environment is good in general.

Great atmosphere and beautiful food

We really liked this restaurant. The Japanese atmosphere and decor were top notch, even down to the cups and place settings. The food was great and we got good portions for the price. Would highly recommend for a nice lunch, dinner, or night out.

Amazing sushi near Dodger Stadium

By 82frankie |

We lucked out when we stumbled upon this amazing sushi joint just .6 miles from Union Station. The sashimi salad was stocked full of fish. Oysters were fresh & tasty. Every dish we tried was amazing.

Wonderful Sushi Experience

Happy hour on way to Dodger game

By Sherry S |

Stopped in during happy hour on way to Dodger Stadium. We got there at 5, so there was no wait, but their website will show you how long a wit it is and lets you join a wait list we sat at the sushi bar and were served promptly. Beats Dodger dogs, hands down.

Very good menu

Liked the sushi options and also some more abnormal choices, such as the jalapeño poppers (which were amazing!). The restaurant is nice and overall price/quality ratio is fine. Service was efficient, helpful and friendly, we really appreciated that.

Great place

Love their 50% off sushi all day deal. I normally only eat sushi here and its pretty standard sushi. If your in the area of the dtla make sure to give it a try. Theirs a yogurt land and Starbucks across the street. Parking is available on the street.

Fresh sushi

Good price and quality

The Sushi was really good, as was the service. During Lunch hours the prices are great. The quality and size of the roll are fantastic.

Very good, very fresh, vet far service. Friendly atmosphere. Just did not like the choice of music, Rap is not my idea of good dinner music.

So good!

By Dori S |

We went late to dinner, and was shocked that so many people were waiting. They encouraged us to stay, and we were not dissappointed! The food was incredible, especially the Poke salad selections and the Captain America roll. Even the mochi was fresh! The service was very good and seemed the restaurant was well-run. We were surprised to see how many people came after us, and when we left, there were still more coming in! There's a reason for that...they're just that good!

Super!

Very nice restaurant, seafoods are high quality and fresh, dish displaying also excellent.. the oysters you won't forget, they tasted so good, highly recommended one in LA. 这家餐厅不会让你失望,食材很新鲜,摆盘精致,服务也很周到,本想去另外一家,但是已经关了门,真是无意中发现的惊喜。 🍣🍱🍛🍻🍢🍶

sushi and more

By KarumbaSantaFe |

I was planning on going to Sushi Gen across the street but the wait was too long and there was a minimum order to sit at the sushi bar so I walked across the street to Tenno Sushi. Compared to the crazy chaos at Sushi Gen this was very peaceful. The sushi chefs bowed and greeted all customers as they walked in the door. I was seated promptly at the sushi bar and presented with a menu. I decided to go with the rolls since they were a bit imaginative. Rolls were 8 LARGE pieces which was more than I expected. I had the Tornado roll and the eel and tempura roll. The tornado was spicy tuna, crabmeat and avocado wrapped with potato strings which sounds weird and it was. Tasty but slightly greasy for me. The eel tempura was huge with large shrimp. Parking is difficult . There is a very long sushi bar and multiple tables. Tenno offers everything noodles, bento, sushi, rolls etc... Service was quick to order and receive food but very slow getting the check.

Food with a friend

I came here for lunch with a friend. The place was clean, service good, food really nice and well priced. Would recommend if you’re visiting Little Tokyo.

Crappy food and crappy service

By Nichikameko |

Food was not great even for the most simple dish like tamago. Service is the worse i have even gotten in any japanese cuisine restaurant. The waiters are busy chit chatting rather than checking on the customer whether the food is acceptable or not and whether the customer need anything else.

Good rolls and nigiri, beer pitchers, and actually attentive servers - a nice evening

By 0591TimS |

Pitchers of Kirin Ichiban draft at $13.50 - one was more than enough for two. Not all our choices impressed. We didn't care for the garlic edamame: two much garlic and sloppy and sweet. The Hawaiian roll was also kinda ordinary. But we really liked the Jessica Alba roll (yes really, check it out) and the spicy tuna roll. The fatty hamachi Nigiri and fatty salmon belly Nigiri were excellent. The Spanish Mackerel; was good too. The price was in line with expectations for this level of Sushi joint. The service was quite attentive and friendly and helpful. We can't comment on why some reviewers were cranky about the service. Maybe it's hit-and-miss. We had no complaints. At least three servers checked in on us to make sure we were happy. We had a good time and would go again. We'd tried to get in elsewhere in Japan town and didn't want to deal with their wait time. We expected Tenno to be disappointing because we we seated right away. That was not the case. We had a nice meal and a great time. We'd happily go again.

Great food! Horrible customer service...

By Bryan T |

We came with a group of 7 on Sunday around 1:30pm. There was only 1 other table seated. After we were seated, ordered our food and served our drinks the waiter comes back to tell us that all of the things we ordered are not available on Sundays or Holidays and that he had no idea about this because he doesn't work on Sunday's usually. There was no posting of this exception on their Menu or online. Only that lunch was served until 4pm. And apparently they cannot even put those options in the register because the owner changes the register on Sunday's. We decided to stay and order something else that was more expensive even after the 15% maximum discount was allowed for customers. This was also more food than we wanted to eat. We also asked the waitress if she could put a little rush on it because we were now running late after trying to figure out the ordering mess. The waitress responded with "I can't guarantee it will come out any faster." Then some of the food starts coming out in a reasonable amount of time. The food servers had no idea what they were giving us for a few of the rolls. Once we got our food we realized when 5 out of 7 had finished their food that the meals the other 2 ordered had still not come out. We told them to cancel it because we had no more time and to please bring the check. When the manager brought the check she was apologizing and said she felt bad and that she was giving us the maximum discounts she could and that she would give us ice cream as well. We said no thank you. When we look at the check, we realize they still charged us for the 2 extra meals. When we asked the manager to remove them she said let her see what happened and checked with the chef if they made them. They didn't believe us at this point. Worst service I have ever had. Even though the food tastes good, I do not recommend this place due to the poor customer service and lack of competent staff.

Just OK

Was in town on a business trip and the people who we were working with knew we liked Japanese food and suggested Tenno Sushi. There were seven of us and our orders were generally similar. A few had Bento boxes with tempura and teriyaki, one had Bulgogi, another gyoza and tempura, and other similar dishes. Service was good, answered our questions, gave suggestions, and kept our glasses full. We had no problem walking in at around 11:30am. The food is good, is tasty, but nothing really memorable. Not a meal that you'd say, "I've just got to come back, that was great." When in Little Tokyo on our next visit, we'll try any number of other similar places.

Imitation crab and low priced lunch deals

By elainetravels |

They have lunch specials under $10 for meals with soup and rice, so Tenno is a good place to stop for a bite on a budget. Please note that the budget prices are because the crab is imitation, and the portions of the fresh fish are very small; you get what you pay for, so if you can afford to pay a bit more and wait, I would highly recommend you go to Sushi Gen across the street. Although they are a self described fusion restaurant, we stuck to the mainly Japanese sushi and sashimi choices. I ordered the Spanish mackerel sashimi for $16.50, and the fish was very fresh, albeit served very sparingly for the price; I could have easily eaten three orders. I was glad I also ordered the soft shell crab roll for $11.95 which was enough to share. The batter was more flour than panko, so it was a not light, and for some reason they drizzled a sweet "eel sauce" on the plate. One of my friends customized a sashimi bowl with four choices. Another customized a seaweed salad with salad greens. The birthday girl chose a rainbow roll $11.95 (imitation crabmeat) and a pink lady roll $12.95, which was a similar variation with spicy imitation crab, topped with a lemon slice, that you ate after eating the roll. Once we told them it was a birthday celebration, they offered a mochi ice cream dessert with birthday candle to the birthday girl:)
