I came in with friends to try this place out after it caught my eye. Our waiter was relatively short with us. He seemed irritated with all of his customers. Maybe it was a bad day, who knows. My friends were drunk but I was sober. I ordered a beer and it was served to me after our food was finished. Generally, most people want to drink beer with their food. I can’t give this place a full 5 stars because of the service of the waiter. The food was good. I highly recommend the Habanero chili or the chili with beef and sausage.

We found this restaurant because it was the closest to the Texas State Capitol. It is a fun and funky place for seriously good chili. We had the Chilli Potatoe. Lost of chile and cheese on a baked potato that went particularly well with a local Texas Craft Beer. If you are near the Texas State Capitol this is a great place to check out!

Chili is their specialty. Service was excellent. Very noisy, but what you would expect in a place like that . Kind of a dive atmosphere. But welcoming. Moderate prices.

The food at the Texas Chili Parlor is unassuming. The times I've eaten there, I was able to get a table immediately. I find that their food is "home cooked" not precooked like most places. It's as if I stepped back into time and visited a nice mom and pop cafe. The guacamole is fresh and not the pre-made kind you find in a store. It's just refreshing this day to have homemade food with all the chain restaurants around. And, the prices aren't artificially high.

Went for lunch and loved the vibe and atmosphere. Loved the chili and margaritas. Food was fantastic and service good. Will come back next time I’m in Austin.

The food is good, if you like chili, but it just feels nice to be there. It's a place from another time.

Visited while passing through Austin. The decor really makes this place interesting, the waitstaff was friendly and attentive. I had a grilled cheese and chili, my daughter had a BLT. Not that either of these are hard, the food was good and hot. I had the two star chili and for a person who likes spicy food, it was plenty spicy. The three star would have been to much for me.

We saw this place on a tv show and tracked it down . The exterior looks a bit dodgy but don’t be put off! Inside the food is very tasty and good value , everyone from students to business people were eating here

Visited with my husband after reading reviews. This place is great!! We had Mad Dog margaritas and they were excellent! Just wish they were bigger. Only $6.50 though, so that’s not bad. I had chicken fajitas and my husband had the bowl of red (no beans) chili - mild heat. The chili had huge chunks of meat and he said it was wonderful! Highly recommend this place! Definitely a hole-in-the-wall feel to it. Don’t let that put you off. Everyone welcome!

This restaurant is an Austin staple, close to the Texas State Capitol. It is Austin cool and wierd. There are fun signs all over the place. I really like the frito pie, the baked potatoes, the salads with sliced olives, and the venison chili. The prices are very reasonable and the menu has a good variety of yummy options.

An old school dive. Good food and cold beer. Menu options were huge. Everything our group had was good. From a great queso to burgers, salads, and burritos.

We tried a combination platter. I had their signature chili meat only medium heat. It was great, needed a little salt which when saltines were added was just right. The meat was very tender and large chunks. Very good. I also had the gumbo, tons of flavor, lots of meat. And the Chalupa was my final combo piece. It’s more like what I’d think of as a tostada, and also very good. I tried the black bean chili my Co-worker ordered and it was rich meaty and delicious. We both shared the large guacamole and salsa the guacamole was very fresh and not overly complicated exactly what I love about guacamole. The prices were affordable the staff very friendly. The place is old, it appears to have been decorated in ‘77 when it opened and not touched much since. Just focus on the delicious food and wonderful people.

They come for the chili, and it's great. Never had better anywhere else. The other dishes are great, also (I love the enchiladas). The atmosphere can't be beat. A happy customer since 1982.

Small, kind of dumpy place with a lot of character. Great chili and drinks and cheap prices as well. Fun place to watch a game and have a cold one.

Great homely restaurant. Prices extremely reasonable. Food great. Had gumbo and chilli combo which were great. No draft beer otherwise a must do

I've been to the chili parlor a couple of times now. It's a great place to take out of town guests who have a desire for a genuine Austin experience. For those who remember...it reminds me of Hut's burgers before they closed, but in a chili parlor kinda way. Service is good, beer is cold, many types of chili for those who like it super spicy to those liking more mild, and they've got a menu for those who don't want to dip into the chili. Prices very reasonable! The place looks pretty "authentic" from the outside.....and it carries into the dining area. The only hassle is parking! You'll end up parking on the street, but within a couple of blocks. Well worth the effort for the reward.

Frito pie is the best I’ve had. Ate here two nights in a row while traveling for business. Only 2 blocks from the Hampton hotel, easy walk. No trouble getting a table, servers were friendly. Reasonable prices. Margaritas were better than the ones at the Mexican restaurant up the street. The restaurant smells like it hasn’t been cleaned thoroughly in years, stale food smell, but the dishes and food itself were clean.

On the face of it this restaurant had all the makings of being a thoroughly enjoyable experience and indeed that’s how it should have been. It’s quirky, busy and has bags of character and food promise. The menu is good, the food was good I have to say but sadly a few things that should be good are lacking. The waitresses were clearly rushing around and had no customer care, indeed they were curt and unhelpful. The bowls were dropped in front of us after a long wait and were luke warm, we sent them back to be heated up. It’s a real pity this place doesn’t take more care of the customers as without a doubt it could be a superb dining experience. If your not in a rush and it’s not busy go for it but be prepared to experience something very unlike the USA. Come on Texas Chilli House, get a grip!

Ok, well first of all, I love dives. This definitely qualifies. Got a couple of cold beers and the chili sampler. My 14 yo got the Frito pie. My experience: I ended up getting the white chili, XX and Habanero (when I ordered the latter, the waitress warned me that it was very hot... duly noted). The white chili was very good - enjoyable with a bit of a spice kick. The XX was REALLY hot. In fact, I was thinking that I'd made a huge error because I didn't think I could go hotter with the habanero chili. Well, let me tell you that (at least the day I was there), the XX was hotter than the Habanero. In any case, I'd recommend getting a side of sour cream and either mixing that into your chili or as a side. The boy was not enchanted with his chili. I just didn't have the right consistency to him. He said that the X chili just seemed to him like meat in a sauce and not a heartier chili. He's not wrong. But, chili comes in many forms. Nevertheless, he did not finish his Frito Pie. I am VERY interested in bringing my wife here - my son is probably gonna get a burger or something. But, I think that we'll enjoy some chili. Maybe we'll get a bowl of X and XX and mix them - something in the middle would be perfect.

Food was good, prices reasonable , service excellent i would appear parking was a nightmare we stayed at the hotel across the street

I go to this place every time I am in Austin, which isn't as often as I would like! I went the first time because of its mention in a Guy Clark song. Every single time I have had a great experience. I am made to feel welcome when I go and it is also excellent value for money. I always have the 5 bean chili and a mad dog margarita. Both are always absolutely perfect. It is nice that some of the servers remember me from previous visits. There is plenty of interesting decor which gives me something to look. The entrance and outdoor frontage is quite small and unassuming, so some people could easily walk by this place. My advice is don't! This is the place I always mention whenever anyone asks me about good places to eat in Austin.

If you are looking for a true old dive, this is it! It’s been in the same location for over 50 years. I did not have the chili-this is their specialty, but I just wasn’t in the mood for it. I opted for a burger, and it was good. Cooked perfectly, lots of pepper in the meat, very tasty. Prices are very reasonable. Service was good, and we received our food quickly. It is truly a dive, so if you are looking for shiny new tables and such, don’t go here.

I did a Google search for the best margaritas in Austin. Texas chili parlor came up with one of them. It’s the mad dog margarita. It did not disappoint. Loved it. It’s made with Mezcal tequila. My wife and I also had a late lunch here. I got the Migos with pork chop. Yummy. I have never had Migos before and when you’re somewhere that is something different you got a try it. So good. My wife had the cheese enchiladas covered with their chili. The chili had huge chunks of beef. Yumster. I will go back

We thoroughly enjoyed our lunch here. The staff was extremely attentive, although the atmosphere is charmingly hectic, and willing to chat about the chili, etc. The food was delicious...and the chili quite different than ours at home, which made it definitely worth the visit.

Chilli and taco dive! Downtown Austin, couple of blocks from Capitol. Parking in decks all around. Very good tacos, chilli and tamales. Staff was helpful and friendly. Very casual and laid back. When in town will go back.

the chili was really tasty, and the portion sizes were amazing with a very reasonable price tag. Inside is unpretentious and casual, so don't expect fine dining here!

I didn't know what to expect when walking to the Texas Chili Parlor, but once outside you realize that it's a real "dive" in all the best ways. Our lunch with chili dogs and chili cheese burger (of course) was tasty and the staff friendly. I imagine this is one hopping place during home UT football games.

The Texas Chili Parlor was recommended by a trusted friend as his "go to" place while in Austin. Tried it today for lunch and it was great. Looks like a total dive, with lots of the appropriate stuff on the walls, and lots of wonderful food on the menu! Spicy chili is very spicy, and I timed my mouth's return to normal at 45 minutes after eating. It was great.

Very welcoming and friendly. Got the chili taster with three types of chili and Mac and cheese. Close to the capital, great for a quick bite to eat

I ordered a combo of fajita steak, chili sampler and queso, all excellent… loved the green chili. Can’t wait to go back and try more! Highly recommend. Great food and service.

My sandwich was great. The tomato basil soup was delicious. It’s a small combo shop restaurant and flower shop. There were only seats for six at 3 tables (2, 2, 2 each). Three others in my party of 4 were okay with it. Beware the french bread or roll was massive. The drinks menu seemed lengthy: non-alcoholic and names suggest “health food” type of drinks. The town museum was across the street, interesting! Jan 31.

We had been told by friends that this was a great stop for lunch. A classic dive bar with good atmosphere. Staff very friendly and always checks on the table. Had a chili cheese burger and wife had chili baked potatoes . Both excellent . Side salad was large and almost a meal. Large selection of drinks. I'm sure its z great place after events in Austin. Check it out.

This was my second trip here and again it did not disappoint. I had the classic burger and a taster size of the habanero beef and pinto beans chili. My co-worker had the Texas Chili Parlor Steak. He said his was amazing. For me, the chili was NOT as overpowering as I thought it might be, but it was very good. To say the burger was delicious would be an understand. It was THE best burger I have had in quite some time! LOVE this place! If I lived in Austin, I'd definitely go more often! Also, I will add that it was pretty packed for lunch and our food came out pretty quickly and the service was great!

Good and tasty food, very kind staff. Location cozy, it maybe crowded and it may take quite a long time to eat.

If someone recommends this place to you, its because they're right! It's a great place to eat! Clearly a local's favorite, I'll affectionately call it a dive restaurant. There's also a dive bar in the place. We got there for their Wednesday special - Sour Cream Enchiladas. Oh, MAN they were delicious. I also ordered a side of their White Bean / Pork Chili, after all, we're in a chili joint. It was delicious. This is Austin cheap eats at its finest, do not miss this place!

Dive bar type atmosphere. Service is good. The original red chili is good. The black bean, beef, and sausage is super good. The drinks and menu is very good.

Loved the atmosphere and the food was delicious. Service was a bit slow (and forgetful) but overall, everything was great. We'll definitely return.

Frequented this place in the 70s while I attended the university and it hasn't changed much. Friendly local folks at the bar along with attentive waitstaff and a funky vibe. Great chili, enchiladas, cold beer and don't forget the Mad Dog margaritas.

Loved trying the Chili sampler where you can pick 3 of the many chili's offered. Red, white, X, XX and XXX offered. Kind of hole in the wall place, but these are usually the best kind. Parking tricky. Go, try and enjoy!

The table we were shown to was dirty. We waited over 20 minutes before anyone showed any interest. My husband ordered a beer and when it didn’t arrive 20 minutes later he was told by another server that it hadn’t been available for 3 months. Food finally arrived. Nothing special. The rest rooms were incredibly basic. An occupied cublclie was designated by a pulled shower curtain. At least the drinks were deducted from our bill. We have never received such poor service in the USA or even in the UK, which is saying something. It was obvious there weren’t enough staff employed. Extremely poor. Would NOT recommend to anyone.

In all my years of travel, this establishment takes the accolade for rudeness and arrogance to a new level. At first we thought this was a reality show but we soon realised this was for real. The establishment looks like a dirty run down wooden shack from the outside, inside it is not much better but it was busy and the guide book said it was a must-see so we waited 10 minutes on the sidewalk on a cold wet, midweek November lunchtime to be allowed in and shown to a table. It would take another 10 minutes before the previous diners plates and glasses to be cleared. Having taken our order, it would be another 40 minutes before our food arrived. During the wait, the table next to us had their food delivered but returned because both their meals were cold. We ordered 4 meals, 2 x signature bowls of chilli, 1 x chilli and jacket potato and 1 x salad. All 4 dishes arrived as cold as the salad. We eventually got waitress to take our food back albeit reluctantly. There were 2 female servers working, I guess both were work- experience staff with no prior experience with customers, they were clearly out of their depth. We were offered no apology for our cold food and we were told no-one else had complained but this is untrue as we saw 2 meals returned for being cold and a neighbouring table told us their chilli was also cold. Our returned food (microwaved not fresh) was thrown back in front of us by this server who just complained she was busy and nothing was her fault. Her attitude was appalling. The reheated food was OK but nothing like the hype suggested, my wife makes a chilli far better. When we came to pay, the same unsmiling, scruffy older man who let us in off the street took was sitting by the door taking payment, I presume he's the manager. We said the food was eventually OK but the staff had been rude. He said it was their busiest day of the year (really? a cold, wet, midweek lunch in November? I do not believe him.) Again, no apology, just a smirk because we left no tip saying something derogatory about us being British and not appreciating service. I think he and his staff should try visiting a proper restaurant, even MacDonalds staff are more courteous and polite. In the UK, a restaurant this dirty would be closed by Environmental Health. Oh yes, for you ladies, be prepared to have only a shower curtain divide you from other bathroom users when you are the using the toilet. In summary, this place is living off a reputation it may have had 20 years ago, any measure of quality has long-since disappeared, just like the exterior of this building. Rudeness and arrogance by waiters/servers like we experienced is not acceptable anywhere in the world although, in mitigation, assuming the servers were new and inexperienced and having seen and spoken to the owner, you could see how they simply reflect his attitude. Top tip, try and speak to the guy clearing the tables, he's the older guy, long, should-length grey hair, glassy eyes with the right leg of his jeans rolled up to the knee, the other leg normal length. He's actually a really nice guy, he quoted the bible on several occasions but don't let that put you off, he said we weren't the first complain and wouldn't be the last. As he said; "It's the fog of war man"..! Sadly, this was to be our final meal in Austin before flying home so we were expecting great things, expectations which which were to be dashed by quite the reverse. All those great experiences over the past 10 days marred by one dreadful experience.

To savor a bowl of tasty chili with a nacho side dish at this joint is close to feeling like a real Texan in the heart of it all, Austin. The service was fast, efficient and friendly, and the food was delicious. I will remember my first taste of chili in the shadow of the Texas Capitol and its Lady Liberty. Great memory to be had.

Nice casual restaurant for some chili & more! I had the house chili & it was really good. My husband got habanero chili and said it was one of the spiciest meals he's ever had... and he likes his spice. But he said it wasn't just raw spice, it was flavorful & delicious! Kids were not into chili and there were other good options for them too, everyone was happy with their meals. The place was very busy when we were there, the waitress seemed a little overwhelmed, but did a good job keeping on top of water & service.

From the outside, it looks like an absolute dump. But on my gosh... the food is beyond amazing. We ate lunch there during the week day and ordered their special. It was beyond incredible. The wait staff was super busy so we didn't have amazing service but that's okay... the food made up for it.

Walked in a bit skeptical. Reputation of the place is big, need to see it for myself. Atmosphere is good, but what I would expect. Decent size place, maybe 25 to 30 tables plus a bar. Menu is chili, Mexican, burgers, bit of Cajun plus salads....so bring all types and there is something for all. We started with a chili sampler. 3 taster bowls to explore. From there we tried a few more items as we explored more. Texas red was good authentic Texas chili. Hearty chili taste w/ meat, no beans. Sausage and beef w/ beans very good as well. Chicken and sausage gumbo was nice but not 100% true to my coastal roots. Migas and chili was a great surprise. Prices imho we're VERY reasonable! Bring friends and have fun. Service was a bit slow on a full joint. Order drinks early and often and enjoy!

The unassuming entrance conceals a hidden gem. Once inside, you’re immersed in an authentic Texan bar/restaurant with a lot of character, dimmed lights and great classic rock music playlist. The food is amazing - the chili beans-based specialties are fantastic, the Mad Dog margaritas are chromatic and blues-inspired, and the staff really friendly and welcoming. Kerry, Brandon, Trish, Janelle, and all the other staff whose name I missed - thank you, it’s been an absolute pleasure!

This Austin staple is quickly turning its nose up to long time locals. I came to have dinner with my wife and son when I witness the manager SCREAMING FU YOU B**ch to a patron . Then proceeded to curse out the delivery trucks that were approaching. The food quality has gone done while the prices sky rocket. Not to mention when I put my name on the list the older man was inebriated he was slurring and reeked .i went to wash my hands when I watched a waitress leave the restroom with out washing down .

They seemed overwhelmed for an off peak time. Maybe there had just been a rush. No one was blown away by the food and the atmosphere was too dark for the kids. May be a good place for a game with buddies, but I wouldn’t return if I was back in the area.

So my wife and I usually make a weekend trip to Austin every couple of months, just to get out of Houston and do a bit of walking. Without exception, the Chili Parlor is our first stop after checking in. They've got a great menu (yes, the highlight for me is the chili, but if you don't like that, they've got plenty of other options), but the best part is just soaking in the atmosphere, listening to the music, and whiling away the afternoon talking. Won't use the tired old "dive bar" comparisons, the Chili Parlor is in a league of its own.

We were staying at the Doubletree Hotel across the street, and they recommended this restaurant that has been around for over 40 years! It was a great atmosphere, and the staff was super friendly! Four of us at dinner, with tea, and an appetizer, all for under $10 per person! Being from Sedona, AZ, with much higher prices, this was very much welcomed! And...the food was amazing! Best queso ever! Everyone had the best food they had our entire trip! We went back three times in 5 days!!

We went to this place the first time because it was right next to our hotel and recommended by the staff. We went back because it was fun, reasonable and had good food. Dont go looking for a gourmet meal. Go for ambience and ample servings of comfort food served by nice people. The place looks like a dive from the outside... and on the inside. But, they are careful apart cleanliness - no menu until you sanitize your hands. The chili, gumbo and burgers were all good We are likely to go back again before we leave town.

great chili great staff..real busy place.. chili was great...cheeseburgers wonderful...love this place will return.

Great old spot. Harder to find these in austin. Dark nice bar. Lots if UT games on tv. Walk to campus and stadium Great value. Lots of food. Pretty good. Nice staff

We ordered several different dishes and versions of the chili, and all were excellent! We do not recommend the nachos, those were disappointing, but everything else was great and prices were great too! We loved the location and the vibe of the restaurant!

Best chili I've ever had (sorry mom). Get it hot and be ready. Quintessentially cool Texas atmosphere!

Stopped in to give it a try. Food and service was good. We tried the combo sampler, burger and chili potato. Everything was good but nothing over the top to say it was great. They serve bottled beer and people are very friendly. Place is a little small and was busy for a Sunday (free street parking). I suspect it is crazy busy when there is a UT game or before a concert.

Good people, good food, good drinks....all at a very reasonable price! Hard to ask for anything more. A great find right across from our hotel. Don't let the dive-bar appearance scare you off!!

Frito pie with the classic Texas chili—medium heat (XX)—was fantastic! The waitress was excellent and the food came out very quickly. The atmosphere is very chill.

Food I ordered the 2 choice sampler - queso and guacamole Large chili All were so so. Queso I dumped entire bowl of salsa in it, and it was ok then. Tasted like it was from those gallon can of cheese. Guac - was green, but no real flavor. Large chili - went with hot. Large chunks of meat, but chunks were so large and chewy, it was tedious chewing. Not especially seasoned beef chunks. Service Waitress must log miles as fast as she was moving, but I must have been in a no contact zone. Atmosphere Small bar with 2nd room. Old wood tables and chairs. Nice, but not really well lit. Numerous tvs. I thought it was nice inside. I could see were this is a nice relaxing meeting spot, but the 3 food items I ordered were not that tasty. Food quality and taste were maybe like kids cooking on a camping trip for 1st time. My order was about $18 prior to tip, so not bad. Double tree hotel staff told me the fajitas were to die for. If I go back I'll try those. But I'm not recommending the 3 choices I got

If you like really delicious chili, great service, and old school gritty atmosphere The Texas Chili Parlor is the place to visit! I saw a whole variety of folks enjoying the place from what appeared to be old time regulars, to suited-up Texas legislators/lobbyists/news broadcast talking heads (could not tell what species exactly), profs from UT, and an upscale lady and her young son. All patron were treated warmly and welcomed by staff...and the rockin’ tunes were perfect.

Awful Chili. Ordered the XXX and it wasn't even the slightest bit spicy. Also ordered the Habanero chili to sample. Again, awful. They just took regular chili and dumped a bottle of habanero sauce in it. No flavor whatsoever, just overpowering habanero flavor. Service was equally horrendous. Waited 20 min after being seated to even have the waiter come ask if we wanted anything. We were going to be late for a concert so we ordered drinks (beers and sodas), an appetizer (chips and queso) and the entree's at the same time. After another 20 min, the chips and queso came out. 5 min later, still no drinks. I asked the waiter if there was a chance we could get out beers we ordered 25 minutes ago, he decided now would be a good time t be a smart-ass. And I quote, " yea dude, you want me to bartend for you AND serve your food"? Don't waste your time in this place.

Finally made it. Been wanting to go there for years and Finally got my chance. I was not disappointed. I had the xX chili and a mad dog margarita. Wow.

A really cool atmosphere and a hole in the wall feel. But don’t let that fool you the chili was excellent. You can get tasters for a small fee which was cool. The chili cheese burger was great as well! Definitely must try!

Well they have fab nachos here. a plate is a meal. they pile it high with stuff. great drinks here too. service was very good. i like the feel of the place. we sat below kurt russell's picture from death proof. my wife got chili in a baked potato. not healthy, but awesome, although not as awesome as nachos.

Getting to this well tucked away place was interesting. Parking is an issue but I found parking in a nearby garage. This place was established in 1976 and has the BEST chilli ever. The menu is extensive. The place is interesting with lot of interesting paintings, metal signs etc. Drinks are decent. Staff is friendly. Totally worth the visit.

I've had the habanero, & XXX chile, by itself and with the potato and it's always great. Ive had the enchiladas for lunch and you can't go wrong there either. Great atmosphere and the folks always remember you and treat you right

We wanted local great Tex-mex and our hotel recommended it. They said amazing hole in the wall. It had more charm than that! We all ate from chili- enchiladas- gumbo- guac and chips, steak tacos, smooth margaritas, beer! All of us said best we’ve ever had. Everything was incredible. Busy, little wait. Such a treat for our first night in Austin. Prices were great, too!

I've been to Austin 4 times and I have eaten here 3 times. This is always a great meal with some of the best chili I have ever eaten! Decor and environment are fun and plenty to see. Staff is always amazing and we will definitely be here again the next time we are in town!

I don’t know who makes this chili, Who flavors it. Or what recipe they use. But I can assure you it’s some of the worst chili I’ve eaten anywhere. Texas should be ashamed, especially Austin. Go ahead and try it for lunch if you like and try to enjoy the dingy, depressing atmosphere. You might want to bring some of your own herbs and spices and definitely some Rolaids. Good luck with this one.

I had to visit due to the song “Dublin Blues” by Guy Clark. This is a great dive bar and just what you would think if had heard the song. I decided upon the chili, surprise, and a salad that was both great! Unfortunately they were out of Mezcal so I couldn’t order a Mad Dog Margarita. But I shall return and get one! Check it out, folks from all walks of life and attire is everything from suits to jeans.

Dude! Very friendly peeps and the burger was tops! If you miss this ol’ run down looking place...you’re missing out!

We were recently in Texas when we discovered the Chili Parlor. We had eaten bbq at several places and Mexican as well. We realized that we hadn’t had Texas chili. What a great place to try it!! I had tamales with rice and beans covered in delicious chili!! There were big chucks of brisket in the chili!!! Fun atmosphere too!

I love this place. It seems to me very authentic. The chili is very good. The habanero was very spicy, I could not eat it and they took it back without charging me, that was a very nice gesture, highly appreciated. I would be back any time I am in Austin.

Heard about it from friends so went there with son who is at UT. Reasonable wait to get in, even for two persons on a Saturday night. FYI - they keep you waiting outside. Once inside - takes a while to get served - but server good and helpful. I had the Frito Pie with two star chili and son had a burger. He thought burger was "fine for the price", but chili was excellent. Didn't think the two star was that hot but really good quality and flavor. Worth a visit if you also try a "mad dog margarita"

Pretty good choices on the menu. I just had an appetizer which was average. Prices were reasonable. Service was good. Not a place I would frequent.

My daughter and I visited the State Capitol on a Sunday. We found this place nearby. It was very popular at the time we arrived but there were tables available. We shared a Tex Mex dish (grande burrito) as neither of us are big eaters...it was tasty. The atmosphere was casual and rustic, which was perfect for a Sunday afternoon lunch. The prices here are very low, which is another reason to recommend it.

The service is slow. Saturated the place. Maybe if they accelerated the attention, they would reduce the waiting line. Good food.

Steak night last night. Very good for reasonable price. AlwAys meet new friends when I visit. Queso with chili always a good snack

The service was excellent at this packed hole in the wall, but the XXX chili was not as spicy as the mild taco bell sauce! The fritis of the Frito pure were soggy, despite quick service. There must be something better to eat at this restaurant to pack it with locals!

Outstanding brisket chili. Not Wendys. Great gumbo available with the sampler platter. Skip the nachos.

without a trip to the Texas Chili Parlor. Truly an institution for great food and drink. Real chili is available here as opposed to many offering around the US. Spicy bloody Mary’s are hard to beat as well. Took a group of non-believers here for Sunday brunch last weekend - all thoroughly enjoyed. Spice is good here so order down if you have a wimpy palate. Must do in Austin in my humble opinion.

Menu is vast, with many varieties of chili, and all are delicious. Fun, casual place in downtown that serves big portions, so you may want to share. Service is exceptional, too. Great cold beer and mixed drinks that will quench your thirst! A true Austin gem that is beloved by all! A really funky place!

One of us had chili, two of us had chicken fajitas, one had steak with enchiladas. All the dishes were very good and fairly priced. Unfortunately, the waitress was inattentive and dispassionate. We had to get up more than once to ask her to refill a drink, and it was not because she was so busy. This restaurant is a classic and an asset to Austin. Love it.

Enjoyed the Chili. Many options for taster sizes, or larger ones if you know what you like. Ambiance isn't much, but relatively inexpensive place with great chili - I would go again...very good experience, we are glad we stopped in there.

As a long time Guy Clark fan, I could not visit Austin without having a Mad Dog Margarita at this place. Finally got to Austin and have no regrets dining here for lunch. Visiting here is a true Texas experience. The place is a dive, but half the customers are wearing suits for the lunch on weekdays. The food is good, but not fancy. We tried several different styles of chili and the were all tasty. I recommend this place for anyone seeking to experience a Texas restaurant that does not pander to the tourist trade. BTW, The Mad Dogs were very good.

Small and old as you would imagine an original Texan bar. The chili made of brisket (without beans) is superb. We shared a sampler of the chili, chicken gumbo and chicken enchilada. A delicious way to start the meal. My wife had a main of chicken enchiladas because they were so good. I had the pork tamales which were soft, moist and delicious with their ranchero sauce. Margaritas were ok.

This place has tons of personality and was a great spot for lunch! Our waitress (who used to live in GA) was outstanding - super friendly and happy to recommend dishes since none in our group had ever been here. The Mad Dog margaritas were excellent - not overly sweet but not too acidic- maybe my favorite ever! The queso was delicious, but my entree of the white pork chili was a little bland for my taste. The side salad was fresh and a large portion. Those in our group who ordered chili dogs proclaimed them the best ever! The original red chili was very good as well. We would definitely recommend stopping by for a true Texas experience.

I asked for ONLY the tamales no sauce no nothing on the side and they put everything on it, I asked for a Dr.pepper and it was flat, had no ice, and tasted like straight syrup. I do not recommend this place at all!

We had to get chili since that’s what they seem to be known for. It was really good and different from chili in North Carolina. I would definitely go back! The place was packed at lunchtime and that tells you how good it is!

Great place to take the family. There is a temperature level to suit everyone. Just don't let your ego overwhelm your common sense and go for the hottest stuff they have, as my son did. After about a dozen spoonfulls, he had finished his beer, my beer, and was waving the empty bottle over his head begging our server to bring more. Quickly! Very tasty, especially for the more sane among us.

Just what was needed after a 12 hour journey from the UK. Top notch nachos, white pork chilli and a couple of beers. Snoozy, snoozy...

When my husband and I get a hankering for chili, this is where we want to go! They have several varieties and even have vegetarian! Plus they have a variety of levels of heat to suit your taste. They have other selections as well. I have had the tamale plate and it did not disappoint. It is a small cool old joint that is definitely fun to go to since 1976!

The Texas chili parlor is a downtown favorite and just walking distance from the Texas state capital . From a Texas favorite being chili to the cold beer it's a spot you need to see and experience for yourself. The food is always consistent and great tasting. Don't let the heat fool you. It can get pretty warm. Over all great place

Super friendly and knowledgeable service, fund dive bar vibe that I feel comfortable taking my family to, great prices for the portion size. Food was tasty.

We love the Chili Parlor Bar and regularly go for a late lunch. We were raving to some friends and we agreed to meet for lunch one Saturday early in February. Things did no go well... We were the first to arrive at 11:00am -- the door was locked and nobody responded to our pounding on it. The waitress seemed unaware, there were no steaks (I always order the steak & enchilada plate), several plates weren't hot and had to be sent back, the veggie chili always comes with a salad but this time we were charged, and to top it off the cheque was messed up (no we did not have the steak & enchilada plate!). We will return, but that day was a disappointment and not representative of their best. Perhaps Saturday morning is just the wrong time to come.

Good old fashioned Chili parlor that has some history. Serves cocktails at a fair price. The food is traditional in that the chili is red without beans! You can get it any way you want, with beans.... I ordered a medium size and that was plenty! Temperature I asked for was medium. Should have gone with the mild as it was spicier than I thought but still good. Everyone at the table got something different from the menu and really enjoyed.

We came for the song, "I wished I was in Austin in the Chili Parlor Bar drinking mad dog margaritas and not caring where you are". We keep coming back for the food: chili, enchiladas and steak, and, of course, the mad dog margaritas to wash it down. All types are found here - hipsters, moms, grandmoms, daughters and sons, geezers and kids, doctors and lawyers, suits and blue jeans. A grand melting pot well worth a visit and many return visits.

This locally-owned restaurant has been there since 1976, and I’ve been going there since 1985. When I worked downtown Austin near the State Capitol, I used to regularly walk here for lunch. Now, since I live in Corpus Christi Texas, I only occasionally go. I always make a point to stop here during the annual Texas Book Festival. Love the chili, but tacos are good too. They serve chili with and without beans, but I maintain real Texas chili does not include beans. The mild version is for me, but if you want to work up a sweat, you might try a spicy version (but not me). This is Austin-casual establishment.

We came here for lunch after exploring the Capitol building. The place is really cramped and has a strong dive-bar vibe, so I wouldn't recommended it if you have kids or are mobility-impaired. It was pretty busy but we got seated relatively quickly, though it was pretty unclear whether it was seat-yourself or if you were supposed to wait for a host. We waited and the bartender came around to seat us. The food was pretty good. I got the vegetarian chili frito pie, which I enjoyed. My husband got the tamales smothered in Texas red chili. The chili was great; the tamales were pretty dry. The chips and queso were the best part of our meal, and so cheap! The bathrooms were absolutely horrific, so avoid if possible! They don't even have doors, just curtains. We would come back if we were in the area.

We stumbled in here almost by accident and found it absolutely charming. It is quirky, with lots of kitch decor, but with excellent service and Tex-Mex food among the best we've had anywhere. My wife was not too impressed with the rest rooms, though.

Not sure how or why this has won a trip advisor award. VERY misleading. The place itself has great character but is grubby. The restrooms are disgusting too. Food wise, it’s the worst meal we’ve had in a long time. Food temperature was Luke warm to cold. Best part of the meal was the salad. I tried 3 different chillis, I expected great things as this specialises in chilli. Very disappointing indeed. Tasted like it was all cooked in the morning and chilli just added at different levels to obtain medium and hot. Then microwaved ( this I saw with my own eyes ) Nachos were out of a pack with some cheese on top and possibly microwaved again. Husband had jacket potato and chilli and only ate half of it. Said the chilli tasted like it was out of a Tin! If you wanna go, just go to the bar and get a drink, don’t eat there

Lunchtime, and not crowded. Waiter was rude, neglectful, seemed like he didn’t want to be there. After an hour, only half of the food arrived, some of it was incorrect. Food ice cold, melted cheese hardened to the plate. I truly believe our waiter forgot us completely. The management, to their credit, tried to start over and make it right. But we had to leave. Honestly the worst neglectful service I’ve ever experienced.

Perfect! Great service. Tried three chilis sampler and the enchiladas. Dive type environment but that was what we were looking for.’would go again!

Enjoyed a late lunch sharing the house brisket chili and the beef and habanero chili. Both fantastic.

The dishes we tried were plentiful and tasty, with an authentic Mexican flavor. Good margaritas! Average prices, good quality/price ratio. Fast and friendly service. The location is central but just distant from the area of clubs and restaurants.

the man is very rude and yelled at us (minors) he also pushed me (a midget) and spit on all of us NOT CHILD FRIENDLY

Great food, great service , a quirky interior and knowledgable and helpful staff. The food is to die for. We had the combinations; 3 starter sized dishes for $8.50 giving a good all round selection And yes, the chilli is to die for

Following the exertions of the captex triathlon on memorial day I was feeling particularly hungry but didn't want to venture too far from my accommodation: a quick Google search threw up the Texas Chilli Parlor - so I decided to give it a go. Very unassuming from the outside and just as dark on the inside the TCP offers great food and very reasonable prices - something of a rarity these days. Opted for the grilled chicken chipotle but will be returning to try the chili: probably the venison. The staff were also very helpful and courteous.

Here for lunch one day and snacks/drinks another day. Great bar food, the various chili offerings were all good, great little dive bar.

Went with family here recently on a stay in Austin. We were at the DoubleTree, so it was close to the hotel. Hotel staff recommended it, but I was very disappointed in the food...especially the chili! Air-conditioning was not working well, and the atmosphere is very casual. If you’re just looking for a bar, this place is okay. For lunch or dinner, I would find something else!

We enjoyed XX and venison frito pie. The salads had crispy, fresh lettuce. We had Caesar salad and the always good House salad. It is such a fun place to visit because it represents the best of Austin, Texas.

We accidentally found this place. It ended up being a fantastic meal. The chilis we tried we all really fantastic. The flavors were varied and wonderful. I highly recommend a trip the Texas Chili Parlor for a great meal and beer. They also have salads and killer nachos. Burgers were huge.

After having lived in/around Austin and traveled there for business and fun more times than one can count, I came across this Austin GEM. What a great atmosphere - True Texas - Dive/Saloon/Diner - all in one. Too many great items to choose from on the menu, but I settled on a lunch sirloin steak with an enchilada side. It was superb although I was in Food COMA land during my business meetings later that day. Get to this destination soon. Park on the street nearby and enjoy this Austin, TX landmark (even though it took me a while to find it). Can't wait to get back there myself!

My husband and I had a delicious lunch here after our tour of the Capitol building. The food was delicious and our waiter Gabe was very attentive.

I have been wanting to come here for years after seeing it on Food Network. When we got there it was great. Had a outstanding waitress who was super friendly and helpful. Chili was great and I got a burrito with queso on top. All the food was great and will be back!

Don't be dissuaded by negative reviews. Know what it is, prepare yourself and go. Chili is solid. Texas style as well as other options that include beans. Great steaks. Service isn't extraordinary but thats not really the point of this establishment. The food is good. If you want some traditional Texas chili, you'll have a great time. If you wanted to be treated like a king, maybe don't eat here.

OMG the best chili ever!!! The service is great and food to match. What more could you want? Just a short walk from the Capitol building.

Great place to eat and drink. Chili is flavorful and hearty, it served mild, med and hot. You can’t go wrong with anything

We had the chili sampler and the three chili bowls we had were delicious. Moderately priced as well.

We were greeted and seated upon arrival; the place was busy — the wait staff was hustling, yet still got it right. The prices are very good for the portions you get: $9 for a sampler-size bowl of chilli, a taco, and a huge all dressed baked potato. All food was delicious. The margarita was fantastic — actually, the best I’ve had in Austin so far. Go... enjoy yourself... this is a great place.

I can't believe the positive reviews. The chili had no flavor. The "Killer Nachos" were equivalent to convenience store nachos. Female waitress was rude because we got there at 10:59 am on a Sunday morning, they opened at 11:00 am. The restaurant was very dirty. Dead spiders and gunk on the windows. Smell of mildew when you entered. Expensive for the portions and quality.

I had a strong hankerin' for a chili dog, do I saddled up and rode over to the Texas Chili Parlor. I ordered up a chili dog and the spouse ordered a frito pie. It took a while and although I tried to nurse my Shiner Blonde ( bottles only), I couldn't make it last as long as it took to get the victuals on the table. Big mistake. The dog had so much chili and cheese on it I had a hard time finding it. I set out to eat a little chili so I could see my way clear to the doggone weiner. The chili is a dark, viscuous affair with big chunks of beef in it. It took me three bites before the dog was visible. I grabbed my knife and tried to cut a hunk off but that dog was so tough and so greased up with the chili that my knife just slid right off. That got me angry so I got a firm grip on my knife and speared the dog with my fork, holding it tight to the plate. I managed to saw off a fair size bite of the dog, but the stale bun thwarted my progress. Hey, y'all, put them twisty things back on the bun wrappers when you go home at night!. Anyway, the dog and bun were tough, like they was in the marine corps, you know what I'm sayin'? And for the chili, the more you ate the more bitter it got. I had to throw a mess o onions in there to tone it down a might. And as far as the frito pie goes, it's the same chili, but they throw three regular size Fritos in the bottom of the bowl. ThT ain't right. A good frito pie is supposed to be on a luscious bed of golden Fritos so as to get a good helping of Fritos in ever' bite. I really should a just focused on my beer drinkin' that night and left the chili alone

A decent place to grab quick mexican food but the service is slow and the staff can be a bit rude. Would vouch that the food was good though and economical. Would try this place again if only they improve on their staff/service.

We say 'real'...meaning no beans..... but also ranges from mild...which is mild....to quite Hot...which is Quite Hot... my buddies like the hot stuff, I eat the mild...we are always happy.... crackers to help with the heat, good beer selection....no fuss if you bring in a bottle of tequila.....very nice folks, they've seen it all over the years. If you want, you can see state and national representatives chowing down...and quite a few local/state/national musicians as well... It is a small, dimly lit place that serves excellent chili..other stuff as well, but why would you?

I’ve listened to Guy Clark’s Dublin Blue’s since the 90’s and wondered about the chili at the Texas Chili Parlor. Well it’s worthy of the hype. Great chili flavor with big chunks of tender beef. Mad Dog Margaritas are excellent too! I try the same item in many restaurants as a benchmark for quality, that’s cheese enchiladas. They’re very good here and I would recommend them. Ambiance is real and a good part of dining experience. If you have time afterwards stroll the Texas State Capital grounds, which are a block east of the restaurant.

We arrived at DoubleTree after 10 pm and were glad to hear a restaurant right across the street was opened. Typical beer place, very friendly people, good food served quickly, great Margherita.

Maybe the Austin crowd is into a different taste than us ..... However, it just wasn’t that impressive. Beer was good and cold. I had a small bowl of their award winning brisket chili and I would say it was good, but not great. Also had the queso and chips. Tasted like a nice Velveeta melt, but not write home about greatness. Wife had a chicken fajita salad. Service was excellent and atmosphere was great. Bartender also manned the cash register and didn’t seem too friendly.

We have enjoyed the hot chili and cold Magnums here since the mid-1970's. This place has not changed much since it opened over 40 years ago. It is still great!

Had Sunday late night dinner here and had a lovely server named Kimmy. Ordered KilleR Nachos, Small Mild Chill & a house salad. All excellent. Mild Chilli has no spice so if you like a little kick them go for the medium. All round a great experience.

Great vibe near the Capitol - lobbyists and locals alike - try the Frito Pie - don't expect fine dining - just great beef chili. Fun place to hang out.

We went on a recommendation before a visit to the legislature. My Mexican-Spanish friend said the red sauce was outstanding. My salad was perfectly as described and just what I wanted. YES! They have unsweetened iced tea! The place is dark and close, mimicking a pub feel, and the staff was welcoming and professional. Just a tiny place, but well worth it for a convenient lunch.

Hubs and I went after the movies at the Bullock Museum. Only 1 waitress working the room and she was fantastic. Four top shelf margaritas, 2 fajita tacos and 1 fajita hatch burrito with tip only $50. Great service and well seasoned food. Please go and enjoy!

Classic bar scene and vibe, but the chili is nothing to write home about. They use a roast type meat which lends a stringy texture to the bite. Not what one would consider classic Texas chili you’d find served at say Terlingua. Would we go back? Maybe for a cold beer.

TripAdvisor and our hotel recommended the restaurant. We would have never stayed or gone in without the recommendation. Chili was good but I wish they would clean the place up. I like the places I eat to be clean.

This is one of my favorite restaurants. The frito pie is a hit with my son. I love the combination entrées. The salads are consistently fresh and yummy. The baked potatoes are great but the chili is really outstanding including the venison chili. That is my favorite.

Loved the food. Had the steak and enchilada covered in chili. It was very good. The steak was a little over done but still very good. We did order chips and queso as well but they forgot about it. The place is very small and cramped. It could also use a good cleaning. The service could also be better. BUT, the good news is it's yummy and cheap!

Great menu, cool vibe. Had a really good lunch combo/sampler - chili, gumbo and tamales. It’s worth checking out.

The Parlor opened in '76 and I arrived from London in '77. My new friend's brother worked there as a barkeep, so it was natural for us to visit his bro and have some Texas Chili. I mean, we didn't have chili in England. That started a 40 yr love affair, unfortunately interrupted first when I moved to Pflugerville and then to Oakhill. I don't get to hang as often as I had in the past. It's pretty simple to enjoy this place when you consider the history. They started the clever signs on tip jars in Austin. You know things like, "Tipping is not a place in China" or "Just put the tip in and see how it feels". They definitely invented the kick butt frozen ritas, affectionately know as Mad Dog Margaritas by Guy Clark. If I were you I would go for the Chili and get some of the Enchilada's. Get the chili sampler and try the 3X, you know you want to, so just do it and take a slug off that Mad Dog sitting in front of you. The enchiladas are greasy, cheesy and old school. Don't ask for vegan or gluten free, head somewhere else for that drivel. Go to the restroom, read and add some words to the great graffiti you will find there, perhaps something like, "The future is in your hands" or "If you ever feel powerless, just remember one of your hairs can shut down an entire restaurant". Better still, walk in and sit at the bar. Take in all the stuff on the back wall, visit with their great bartenders and watch a game on the telly. The only thing I miss here today, is the capital oyster bar that used to be next door which closed some 30 yrs ago. It's a wonderful time machine and the world stops for me when I enter these doors. I hope it stays around for another 40 yrs.

Good chili served in an old 'honky tonk' atmosphere. Friendly staff and unique menu offering, of coursechili but also hot dogs, hamburgers, white (pork) chili, frito pie so many of your old favorites.

If you reading this is the kind of person who needs a smile with your table service or a little “southern hospitality” mixed into your ordering, don’t go here. You go here for the chili and atmosphere. It’s old Austin at its finest; gruff, weird, and unique. Pretty cool Tarantino filmed a scene from “Death Proof” here. And it’s fun dive bar to watch a UT game in (if you can get it).

They are proud of their chili at this place. It is very down to earth, and the prices are very reasonable. They do have small sample bowls of chili that you can try. They also have good guacamole and burgers. Our service was good.

eclectic and delicious!!! Wait staff was awesome great beer menu and the chili was amazing!!! Will definitely go again.

We were really looking forward to this place on our Austin get away as it has been featured on Texas must do's and Texas bucket list. Sorry to say, we were disappointed. To say it is a hole in the wall is an understatement. The interior is very dark. There were 4 of us, and we all got the 3 bowls of chili sampler. They were all very good, large chunks of meat in my Texas red And white bean pork, but my bowl of beef texas red was cold, not just sitting on the counter waiting to be picked up cold...refrigerator cold. The gravy was warm, but several of the chunks of beef were cold, as were my Daughter in laws. My only thought about that is that we both ordered mild, maybe that isnt such a big seller, so it had to be microwaved? So, the food did taste good, just not great temperature wise. Dirty. Our table looked like it wasnt clean from the previous guests. There was even a full soda on our table behind the menus, and an empty cracker basket as well. The bathrooms.. men's room has no doors on stalls, womens room has shower curtains for doors on the 2 stalls. The bus person we saw was picking up empty plates ect on vacant tables, but we disnt see him actually wipe down the tables. I will say, our server was very nice. I'm sure she would have taken care of our cold chili, but I didnt feel like waiting. She was busy, so service was a little slow, but not bad. This is a very quirky place, and I'm glad I can say I was there, just don't think our party will return.

Classic old school chili - Habanero, beef with beans. Yes this variety is spicy but it is nowhere close to the insane levels of heat I’ve had at suburban chili cook offs. I thought it had good texture and taste. My server and the bartender were both very pleasant without being cloying, and the music was upbeat early ‘70s when I was visiting. There is a character to the joint that is authentic Austin, not some curated chain restaurant out in the suburbs. Finally, as I note in the review’s title, it is a short walk from the Museum of Texas History, what could be a better post museum lunch than a bowl o’ red?

Yes, a Hole in the Wall Austin bar, but don’t let that run you away - RUN to it. If you like a chili that is full of meat and taste good this is your place. 3 different heats. The mild was more to my taste, but some like it hot. Plenty of other options too including hamburgers. And the price is right.

2 persons. Took 5 minutes to get a table. 10 more minutes to have someone take our drink order. 10 minutes later, still no drinks. Waitress said 'We're working on it.' We left - if you can't get served, why wait?

Incredible! We wait almost an hour and a half but it was really worth it. They are famous for the brisket and it is DELICIOUS but the ribs were something from another planet, absolutely AMAZING! We try all the meats and all were great. Best bbq in town! The people is very friendly, when you arrive you can ask what they have left and they will let you know if you would be able to get what you want. I recommend going around midday.

Stopped in for a lunch with a friend on the way to the Capital complex. Phenomenal chili, friendly staff, unbeatable prices. Perfect place to enjoy local food

What i ordered came to about 13 or 14 dollard, small chili and small burger. I got there to pick it up and he says well over 20.00 according to the menu he tried in vain to make a bunch of money off me' I hope they go under real quick.

Fantastic, very rustic and just good chilli and beer. Sat at the bar and served by a very friendly bar man. Even got chatting with some locals. Went for the XX chilli and was not disappointed.

Been here a few times.... tonight stunk! Our wait staff was very unfriendly. Our food wasn't hot, told her and before I could say anything, but our food isn't hot, she jerked it up an took it away. Said nothing. Rude!!!! As for the food, it was good!

This restaurant was recommended to us by a local Austin friend. Funky decor - prompt service. Hubby had the margaritas, and although they were good, nothing outstanding. Frito Pie was outstanding! The original Texas Chile was OK, but the Frito Pie had much better flavor. Quite a walk from Downtown.

The chili was ok at best. I ordered the medium and it basically burned all of my taste buds. I thought maybe it was me and three of my friends also tried and said it was inedible (too hot). The bathrooms need major work (not clean...just walk in and you'll see). Overall it's an ok place if you happen to be walking by.

We visited here twice for meals because it was close to our hotel. No question it is a dive bar, but it was a fun atmosphere. The food is very good (didn't try the chili, it was over 100 degrees outside), but the service can be a little lacking. They only had 2 servers for the whole place both times we were in there, but they do the best they can. We also stopped by for a drink after a concert and it was slower and had a great experience.

Talk about a dive, the outside is very unimpressive, the inside, well lets just say interesting. The service was amazing, the dive was packed with people. The burgers are out of this world. The chili is made with brisket and just out of this world. No trip could be complete, til you visit the Chili Parlor

We visited for lunch and the place was absolutely packed. The waiter we had was very friendly and chatted us through the menu with recommendations of what to order. We had some cheesy nachos which was probably a mistake as you get free nachos and salsa, so we could have just ordered some nacho cheese (which was incredible!) and have been fine. We had a tasting trio of chillis, all were delicious. Highly recommended.

Dined here 5 1/2 years ago and found it to have been very good. Today I found it mediocre. The place was busy, but not full. I requested a Shiner Bock and was told that it was not available. For good measure, I was told that Dos Equis was also not to be had. I settled on an Austin Amber, but had to wait for it. After a few minutes, I was reassured that it was on the way. When it finally arrived, I ordered a second one straight away, lest I encounter another frustrating delay. This turned out to be a wise move, as the process repeated itself. Wait staff were nonchalant at best. The menu was diverse, and likely to appeal to a variety of tastes, including diners who prefer their chili with beans, in defiance of Texas orthodoxy. I ordered the large traditional signature chili (no beans) with raw onions and pickled jalapenos. The chili was filliing; satisfactory but not memorable. I had the "hot" version, which was a fitting description and suited my taste. After finishing the meal, I stood up in order to get the attention of the staff. Meeting with no success, I presented myself at the cash register across the room and asked for the bill. Overall, the experience was nothing to write home about. I am in no rush to return.

I was excited to see a vegetarian option. Got the veggie chili and baked potato. Hardly any chili in it, was mostly cheese. Chili was a bit bland too. Possibly because it was veggie. My son got a burger which he didn’t like. The seasoning was too strange for him. Overall I would say the food was ok, not great. But what was most disappointing was seeing the dirty bathroom. I would have rather been at a gas station. If they don’t care about the bathroom, I wonder how clean their kitchen is.

So glad we ventured here. Service was excellent, even though it was busy. Margarita was perfect. And the chili -- and nachos -- and gumbo -- just amazingly perfect. Will definitely be back every time I am in Austin

I just ordered a chili and gumbo. They upsold me on cheese and sour cream. No biggie but when I get back to the hotel there is NO CHEESE. Not to mention it took over 10 minutes to get my order out. I would believe the chili and gumbo are made in quantities and not cook to order like a burger or such. I tried to call but there was no answer and the VM was not accepting calls. The food was good.

When I gave my debit card to the server for 2 frito pies, I was given back a receipt for $69. (I was charged incorrectly for someone else's bill) I pointed that out to the server and she ran back and said her manager voided that transaction. It has been 4 business days and it has not been removed from my account. I have called and have not been able to resolve the issue. I will be calling every day until I get that money back! I suggest you pay cash!

This place is a couple of blocks from the Texas State Capitol. They have red bean black bean and white bean chili. All of them are really good. It's kind of a dive bar funky (in a good way) place.

We were sent here for a quick bite (late lunch) by our hotel valet across the street- they know him by name! Very reasonably priced and good meat-only chili. No beans is a good thing for us! Medium bowl size will do you unless you are starving. I had mine mild and they give you onions and jalapeños on the side in case you want to spice it up. Chili is gluten free and thickened with corn flour. I asked because I was a little scared when it came out and was so thick. Our waitress had worked there for ten years and assured me I was good to go. Don’t forget to WALK here- it’s downtown and they have no parking. Variety of people in for late lunch. Enjoy!

Great food and service. Very casual and homey feeling. Lots of wood! Several of us met there and had a real nice time. Ok to be a little loud. Great beer menu!
A Texas Lunch Surprise
I walk for lunch to get out of the office. This gem of Texas ambience was just that. I was tired of sandwiches or burgers for lunch. I ordered one of their many lunch "combos" (tamale/enchilada) w/a side of Chili of course. This lunch combo was a surprise. Regular menu size portions delivered within the promised 10 minutes. I walked back to my office and the food was still hot. Everything packaged nicely with all the trimmings. They definitely know their lunch crowd.
