We found this after roaming the metroplex on a yarn crawl. Slower more formal style with the warm finger tip cloth before ordering. Both our dishes were spiced to our tastes. A large party and multiple take out orders slowed kitchen. The wait for our meals were worth it. Will we be back? Yes, when we are back in the area.

Our party of 4 arrived for dinner last night at 6:45, there were several customers in for a Monday night. It took 35 minutes just to take our order. Appetizer arrived 10 minutes before dinner. Ive complained to the Owner before , I she didn't like the fact that I said anything about dinner taking over an hour after placing my order. She didn't bother to apologize either. Wait staff is friendly but nothing that can do. Owner prioritizes to Go orders instead of customers sitting who are eating in. Food is good but not worth waiting 1 hour and 20 minutes for.

I've done take-out from Thai Opal a handful of times over the past few years, with today being my most recent visit at lunch. I had the pad see eww; I asked for mild spice - a 2 on their scale from 1 to 5. At most other Thai joints in town, I order either a 2 or a 3 because I like a bit of spice but not to the extreme. Today's dish was pretty spicy, and much spicier than I remember from my previous visits. In future, I'd definitely go with a 1 at most. What I liked: -The dish wasn't overly sauced, which is common at many places. -The staff are very friendly and provide ample utensils. Disappointments: - The dish was mostly noodles and didn't have much chicken or broccoli. - With tax and tip, my total was $14, which I thought was a bit high for lunch given the portion size. Nothing accompanied the dish; just the pad see eww. Lake Highlands unfortunately doesn't have many Thai joints, but the folks here at Thai Opal are friendly so I will visit again.

Looks like many of the small Thai restaurants you see in strip shopping center, but it is so much more. The food is excellent, the service is great, and the attention to detail can be seen everywhere. Nicely decorated inside with pretty table settings containing interesting plates, fresh flowers, and candles. Hot hand towels are always bright white and perfectly heated. The menu contains the standards, but they are done well, with fresh ingredients and spices. My wife and I have been many times and have always had a great meal. The owner is very attentive and interested in making sure your visit is enjoyable. If you are looking for Thai food in Dallas, be sure to visit.

I stopped in for lunch today and had a delicious surprise! This is just as the Thai green curry I had in Puket. I have a favorite Thai restaurant in Indianapolis but when I order the green curry there it is too hotly seasoned for me to enjoy. Thai Opal gives you the option on how hot you would like your curry and medium was just right for me - a little bit of kick. When I asked if eggplant was available to add to the curry, I was indulged with my request. Brown rice was an option, which I also appreciated. The thai ice tea was a sweet finish to to my lunch. There is a lunch rate and a dinner rate. If you choose to try Thai Opal, you will not be disappointed. In fact, I think I might see you that as I'm sure I'll be back.

I ordered delivery for lunch. I was delivered on time. I ordered the lunch portion of Thai basil fried rice with chicken. They had the food loosley wrapped in foil within the styrofoam container. That touch was appreciated as it kept the food reasonably warm. I am used to having more vegetables in a similar dish at another Thai place. That is the only thing to note. The sauce was very light and not too salty(as can sometimes be the case with fried rice dishes). The chicken was plentiful and the lunch size portion was generous. I did add a squeeze of the fresh lime wedges provided and a little of the soy sauce packet before eating. It was enjoyable and I don't have any complaints. Since I ordered delivery and haven't been to the storefront, I can't review the restaurant itself.

Thai Opal is unassuming from the outside. We question our decision to go there. However, it was a wonderful choice. The inside is quiet and inviting with great ambiance. The staff were outstanding and provided great service and attention. They were very concerned that we were comfortable. The food was well presented. Every dish did indeed come with an orchid. We thought it was just for the advertisement of the restaurant. I thought the corn cakes were a little too crispy, but good. The dipping sauces were great. The main entrees were excellent. I would certainly go back if I lived in the area.

My friend and I tried Thai Opal today and loved it! The lunch soup was excellent and far more interesting and tasty than most places offer. I had spicy basil noodles which were excellent. I had just about decided to quit ordering rice noodle dishes because they are always so greasy. But these I had today were delicate and flavorful with no greasiness noted. My friend had one of the curries and it was as good as any I have tasted. The service was friendly and helpful. There was a concern in that my food came then I sat there quite awhile before my friend's food came. Nevertheless, I will go back.

The food is authentic, and freshly hand made, and with a lovely presentation each time. The atmosphere is lovely, and it's quiet enough to talk and visit. We are encouraged to stay; not to rush, and enjoy the delightful meals at our own pace. The spring rolls, Crab Rangun, and Pad Woo Sen were all super good! Easy parking off NW Hwy at Matilda. I will be back next week. Don't keep this a secret!

I visited this place for lunch. I was the only one in the restaurant with the waitress. She was very polite. I ordered Thai fried rice with Shrimp and was charged $14.65. I was charged an add'l .50 for the shrimp although the menu read different. Once I asked the waitress she stated it was correct no biggie. After receiving the bill I paid $20.65 to receive $4.00 change. I advised the waitress that I was $2.00 short as I was planning on leaving an $5.00 tip. However, when I brought it to her attention she immediately opened the cash register and brought the $2.00 I advised her to just keep the $2.00 since she thought it was ok to steal it. She began to bow and told me" no take with you, I'm so sorry" She was very apologetic and seemed to look around to see if the person in the back could hear the exchange. As I was walking out she shaid in a whisper " I sorry, rubbed my back and said PLEASE come back" She was aware of what she was doing and I guess she assumed she'd not be tipped well for the small theft I'll never return. Egg drop soup was good, fried rice garnishment red cabbage, tomato, and the orchid were all worn but the food was ok. But the petty theft has cost them a loyal customer unfortunately I will not be back..

Wow! Best Masaman Chicken Curry!!! Yum, yum, yum!!!!! Small little restaurant. Really like crab Rangoon too! They will ask you your spicy preference. I am a "gringa", and I asked for "1". My wife asked for a "4" with her dinner (she likes really hot & spicy). She had to "cool" down hers with a little of my sauce. She said next time she will ask for "3".

We had three appetizers. The fried spring rolls were fine. The calamari was tasty, but tough. The steamed dumplings were average, but they were served cold. The Thai basil, with vegetables and shrimp was average, but the shrimp was over cooked. This was not a memorable experience. We will not be back.

This is a quaint restaurant in a small strip mall in East Dallas. The restaurant itself is clean and attractive. The restrooms are clean. The menu is not huge but sufficient. Lunch specials are $7.99 and a good deal. I started with chicken satay ($6.99) and it was very good. The chicken was moist and tender, and packed a little heat. The peanut sauce was very good. For a lunch entree I ordered the Masaman curry and it was excellent. It had chicken, potatoes, carrot, and onion in a wonderfully flavorful sauce. I would order it again in a heartbeat if not for the fact that there are other things I want to try first. I definitely recommend this restaurant and will return.

We are a family of Thai food devotees and were therefore delighted to read glowing reviews of this restaurant in our neighborhood news magazine and online. We were not disappointed. At 7 o'clock on a recent Saturday evening the restaurant was about one third full and we had no trouble getting a table for three. We started with hot teas: ginger, jasmine and lemongrass, which were flavorful and perfect for the cold weather. For appetizers we ordered chicken potstickers and sautéed edamame, both of which were excellent. The potstickers were unusually complex with a great sauce. A cup of Tom Kha Gai soup was superb, lighter on the coconut milk then is frequently the case, it was nonetheless very tasty. A chicken lettuce wrap was equally good with an interesting mix of sesame seeds, chopped chicken and spicy broth. For main courses we split a Panang curry and Pad Thai noodles, both of which were excellent. We asked for our food to be prepared at a spiciness level of four out of five and this worked well for three of us. Mango sticky rice was a perfect ending to a lovely meal. We will certainly be returning to this restaurant in the near future.

We loved it! Tom Ka is so yummy, spicy basil noodle with shrimp rocked, chicken satay was delicious and had lots of peanut sauce which had a nice kick. Also had beef pad Thai which was really good.

We ordered an appetizer to share and the same entree - Pad Thai. We waited and waited and finally one entree came. When we asked about the appetizer, the waitress did not remember us ordering it. It was strange that both entrees did not come out of the kitchen at the same time - especially since they were both the same thing - Pad Thai. There was a gap of 3-5 minutes between entrees. A little awkward.

The only saving grace for the diner was it was BYOB - but that will only last until they get their liquor license. I found the portions small for the price and flavorless. I really don't like terribly hot food but my husband does. We ordered 3 out of 5 on the spice - and found that even I was adding the garlic spiced hot sauce for flavor. Nothing stood out. We drove about 20 minutes to try out the new restaurant with the great reviews- and I cant understand why they are so great.

I saw the writeup in my neighborhood magazine and decided to try it. I really like Thai food! The restaurant owner was also the server this evening and she has everything clean and with elegant touches such as an orchid on my plate of rice. The Mongolian Beef was the best I have had. The sauce was light and delicate without the heavy, sweet sauce I associate with the dish in other places. I could taste the vegetables and also had the Crab Rangoons for my post-dining pleasure. Ms Hyland has designed a restaurant where one can have a relaxed evening and quiet surroundings. Thanks.

We enjoyed our first meal here so much that we returned a second time on a recent visit to Dallas. There are many vegetarian options and they do make the hot, spicy level just the way it is ordered. The ten was wonderful for me, the five wonderful for my husband. Also, we loved the way the edamame was prepared, grilled with a light oil.

Big family dinner the yellow curry is a mild slow burn... The green curry kicks it into gear. The garlic beef is good... Imagine a Thai beef stew. And the cashew chicken was mild and the wimpier of the crowd liked it. Overall the really spicy (level 5)green was a good spice... Not killer but it opens you up. I like really hot food... So it was good. Service was ok... Forgot a couple things but we had a big group

Where else do you get hot hand towels before dinner. All the dishes we have tried have been. It is certainly not as noisy as other restaurants.

I generally judge Thai joints based on their tom kha and shrimp spicy basil. That said, Thai Opal is fantastic. I was the only diner there at 7pm on a Thursday, so let's hope they make it.

A burst of flavor in every bite! Pad Thai was excellent, and the green curry was spicy and aromatic. Cozy ambiance with great service.

Worst take out ever. Received a half full curry and was given the worst customer service I have ever dealt with. Not only did they make it right by not offering anything in return for their mistake but I realized after opening the container there was hardly any chicken or veggies what so ever. So sad because I was a loyal customer but NOT ANY MORE. Was treated very poorly over the phone and the food is not how it used to taste. MUST BE NEW MANAGEMENT BECUASE IT HAS GONE DOWN HILL FAST AND TASTES MEDIOCRE. Go some where else to eat.

I've only ordered take out from here and not been disappointed so far. Their panang curry was very tasty and there was plenty of food to eat it for two meals. Food has always been hot when received. Will continue to order from here.

Thai Opal is a little gem that is often overlooked in the Vickery Meadow area of Dallas. The food is superb, and service is excellent and uniquely Thai, down to the cool wash cloth offered to guests on a hot day. Thankfully, Thai Opal gives us the option of spicy-ness levels 1-5, I'd recommend a 3 or below for most American palettes. 2 is spicy enough for this gringo. I would give some recommended dishes, but they are all delicious! Thai Opal also delivers, a feature we've exploited often.

We were shopping in the area and stumbled upon Thai Opal. We were greeted by all of the waitstaff when we entered the restaurant, and our waitress was very attentive to us throughout the meal. We ordered and shared the Mongolian Beef and Ginger Chicken. The rice serving is very well presented (won't ruin the surprise), but it is not a very big serving, so we ordered a second plate of rice. The food was delicious. The entree servings are quite generous, and can be shared. Enjoy the sweet guava candy they serve with the check.

I ordered ahead on their website from Google.(dont like using platforms like Grubhub cuz they charge the restaurant a handful so I try to avoid as often as possible). I had the duck dinner entree. I'm not big on Thai food but it was delicious. The rice was great and was more than I could finish. The dish had a bunch of veggies and duck. Overall I was satisfied. Nice stop was ready to go when i showed up.

It's easy to miss this little gem. The address is Skillman, but you see the restaurant frontage better from Abrams Road. It's located in a shopping strip of the type you would not expect to find a decent eatery. Be sure to stop by for some delicious, authentic Thai food, coupled with a warm welcome and personal service. Plus, it's BYOB with no corkage fee! Once inside the restaurant you forget completely that you are in the middle of a less than stellar area. Hot towels are promptly provided, (one of the nice extra touches that are provided), then you are guided (if needed) through a diverse menu. The food is fresh, authentic, beautifully prepared and served. Another reviewer mentioned that they were the only diner, and it was quiet when I was there, too, so I do hope people find this place and it makes it. I think it's one of the best values in Dallas for Thai food.

This is a great little restaurant with delicious food, a charming atmosphere and good service. I had the Chicken Panang, medium heat, and it was delicious! The heat level was just right and they didn't skimp on the meat and veggies. The edamame is excellent as is the green curry. It is BYOB which is an added bonus!

Typically has been an enjoyable, consistent and quality option for Thai, however a most recent experience has made me rethink if I'll return. In the past two visits, the quantity of entrées served, quality and taste have fallen. The restaurant during lunch used to include both an egg roll and salad with lunch entrées...no longer! And in addition the prices during lunch have increased at an unreasonable level. I've had just as tasty Thai food at the fast food option, Pei Wei and other nearby Thai restaurants. Sad, because I know they can do better! Will no longer be a go to option for Thai food in Dallas.

Lake Highlands favorite, but worth a visit if you like Thai. We've been eating at Thai Opal since they opened. The owner is delightful and she always remembers us. We visit as a couple, with friends, family, and out of town visitors. It never disappoints. The Tom Kha soup is a must try. Spring rolls and chicken wings are our frequent choices for a starter. We enjoy their curry and noodle entrees. Oddly, their Pad Thai is our least favorite, but we love the Basil Noodle. Formerly BYOB, they recently got their liquor license. You can get beer and wine. I don't know if they serve liquor. They can accommodate groups of 8-10, but call ahead. It's always clean, and the service is generally good.

Thai Opal was OK, not bad and not good. It came out to $60, including tip and tax, for four of us, which isn't bad for lunch, but it wasn't worth driving there. If you're really hungry and in the neighborhood, then it's not a bad choice.

Since our first visit to this restaurant we have returned many times, often with friends, and have not been disappointed. We always get edamame and potstickers as starters. The edamame are served in the pods, steamed and then sauteed in oil with garlic, salt, and chile. The potstickers have a slightly crunchy texture and a dipping sauce that we usually end up sipping with a spoon after the potstickers are gone. We have also tried the chicken satay and the corn patties, which are very good. Tom Kha Gai (chicken coconut milk soup) is outstanding. Entrees - panang curry with beef, massamun curry with beef are excellent. Pad Thai also good. Tamarind duck is one of the few misses we have found here - have tried it twice and it was less than mediocre. The duck seems to be fried in some sort of batter and then cooked up with vegetables in a sweet tamarind sauce. The waitstaff are friendly and capable, and it is easy to get a table even on Saturday evening.

ThaI Opal has excellent Thai food which you can request as hot or mild as you like. They served us rice on a separate plate in the shape of a heart. Big plus is you can bring your own wine. We were there twice for dinner with groups of around ten, and service was very friendly, but quite slow, but may be better with smaller groups.

While visiting family in the area and having a craving for Thai food, we ordered several items on the recommendation of those that eat here often. We were not disappointed - everything was delicious. Highlights were the yellow curry, and the spicy peanut sauce (dinner items). The Pad Thai was also notable. Our food was ready when we got there even though the place was crazy-busy. I'll be back the next time I'm in the area.

No trip to Dallas is complete without a trip to Thai Opal. I visited here a few years ago when it was first opened and it is as good now as it was then. When I went for lunch on Friday I found it spotless and extremely fresh looking. The table clothes were white, no dust hanging around anywhere, and fresh flowers on the table. Many places opening up after Covid have a stale smell and need a serious deep cleaning. You can tell that the owner at Thai Opal kept up her cleaning, anticipating the day that her customers would return. The food was very authentic and spiced just perfect. Next time I'm in town I'll be back.

I was in Dallas on an overnight trip in search for a bite to eat for dinner. I decided on Thai food and it lead me to Thai opal. I am picky about my Thai after being in Thailand for over a week on vacation. Upon entering it had a very intimate feel. We were seated at our table and ordered summer shrimp rolls as our starter. The summer rolls are your usually rolls made with rice paper and stuffed with shrimp and veggies. There was a peanut sauce for dipping but not the best since very runny. They were good but not wow. For our entrees, I ordered Tom yum shrimp soup extra spicy (5 hot). It was spicy but for me maybe a 2-3 spicy out of 5. I will say that the flavor was solid and there was about 6-8 decent size shrimp inside the bowl. My husband opted for the spicy basil noodle with chicken. His spice level he opted for was a 3 and it was slightly too spicy for him. He did say the flavor was good. I had a bite of his dish and I didn't like it nor did I think it was spicy. To each their own I guess? Overall your typical Thai place. You can find a solid meal but nothing that wowed me.

Love the curries here. The pad see ew is fantastic as well.. the chicken with cashew nuts is very tasty and meaty. Nice ambiance and great for dinner.

I happened to be in the neighborhood of this restaurant with my 2 year old granddaughter who needed use of a bath/restroom. The wait staff met me with "for customers only" while waving a finger at me. I hadn't even made known my need. I asked for the manager and Nick, he said his name was repeated the same again without a smile or an independent assessment of "the situation". Missed opportunity to court my business. I assume this is a problem for the restaurant, people walking in asking for the bath/restroom, that is. I suggest placement of a warning at eye level at your door in RED perhaps and if someone still misses it, treat them as human, and allow them use of your bath/restroom and with a smile say we reserve the bath/restrooms for our paying customers. ANYONE coming through your doors is potentially a customer. I looked around and i saw no one like me and i chose to feel unwelcome because of that and quietly walked away. I felt profiled, embarrased and I cannot imagine patronising your restaurant for this simple reason.

I first visited Thai Opal after hearing neighbors rave about the food. Since then, I've probably eaten here about 6 times. The food and service are always great. The owner is usually there and remembers both me and my husband. She remembers what we like and is quick to recommend new dishes. Sometimes at other Thai restaurants, they use fish oil, or somehow manage to get a fishy taste into the food which I HATE. I have not experienced this at Thai Opal. I don't understand the comments regarding portion sizes. The portions are more than enough. You can't really compare this to the portion sizes at a typical fast-casual chain restaurant. I have placed a delivery order once and received it in about 20 minutes. I've also called in a to-go order and that was ready in 5 minutes. I will keep visiting Thai Opal because of the food and service. I believe it's important to support local restaurants. Hopefully this restaurant will be successful and others will move into the neighborhood!

The wife and I went here for dinner on a Saturday night. I was pleased to see that business has picked up. The appetizers were very good--chicken satay and steamed dumplings. I would order them again. For entrees I got the yellow curry and asked for it mild. What I got was the hottest curry I have had in my life. After just a couple of bites I was sweating so much it looked like I had taken a shower. The wife ordered the roast duck curry and asked for mild. She also got hot. The flavors in both curries were developed and rich, but the hotness made mine inedible. Either the cook does not know temperatures or does not care what the customer prefers. That is the reason for 3 stars. The server was accommodating and replaced my dish with another of the same, but it also was rather hot so I ended up not having dinner. At least the appetizers were good. If I return here again I will never order curry.

Authentic dishes, wonderful staff and a comfortable, welcoming atmosphere makes Thai Opal a must-visit restaurant. After multiple visits and sampling numerous offerings on the menu it is apparent that the owner and staff are as passionate about the preparation of their dishes as they are about their service. Each dish is prepared in the traditional manner, seasoned, sauced and spiced perfectly. The soups are excellent, flavorful broths with large portions of vegetables and meats. The atmosphere is casual with a contemporary flair. Entrees are healthy portions and authentically reflect the flavors of their indigenous regions. It's currently BYOB, so feel free to bring your favorite libation along for the ride. The prices are reasonable, the portions generous, and the staff and service exemplary. Thai Opal delivers an outstanding dining experience and should be on your short list of must-visit restaurants in Dallas.

In Dallas, on Christmas Eve, most places are closed and tables at the very best are hard to get and book weeks ahead. Wanting to try Thai Opal for a while. We (2) booked a reservation for Christmas Eve dinner, thinking there would be a wait list for a table. When we arrived the place was practically empty. We settled into a very comfortable table with linen table cloths, table top lighting. The small restaurant was very pleasant and tastefully decorated for the Christmas holidays - a nice tree, and fresh cut greenery on tables. The menu is appropriately small but with enough selections to find something for everyone. Service was very good; better than most establishments in Dallas. One plate, shared salad, was too salty, so we sent it back. No problem and the replacement was very good. Our main entrees were nicely spiced with what one would expect for Thai. We shared a side of Pineapple rice. It is BYOB; which is a plus to this diner. The restaurant does have a wine and beer license. I will be going back. This is a solid neighborhood restaurant. I hope there normal weekday business keeps this place going for a long time.

Always a pleasant experience with good menu options and flavorful dishes. Service was awesome, and the only disappointment was that the "lunch menu" seems to no longer be an option. This was disappointing because prices were slightly different from the dinner menu and the lunch menus included a fried egg roll and/or choice of cup of soup or small salad. Otherwise, everything was enjoyable.

We have been here numerous times, and the food and people never fail to impress. Not many (if any) specials each night, but the menu is solid and has a good variety. Come early, as it sometimes gets busy.
Great food, atmosphere & staff
Wonderful, cozy, pretty restaurant with great food. I had Panang curry. Others had Tom Kai soup, Mongolian Beef and spicy basil noodle. Everything was excellent, really fresh and beautiful presentation. All staff are super friendly. We love this place!
