Slightly off their game, but still a place you should experience.

By Flat Stanley explores the World |

Slightly off their game, but still a place you should experience. This was the second birthday (57 & 58) my lovely wife chose to treat me to dinner at "Jamie's Place". Once again the food did not disappoint as we relish (no pun meant) genuinely unique takes on traditional dishes... in this case a twist on viet- american fusion. We tried 5 appetizers, all for that reason.. along with a bottle of prosecco (a region we used to live near). We had the salmon skin "tacos", imperial rolls, beef crisps, the scallion "psncskes," and a few others. The crisps were our fav. For the mains I had the duck breast, my bride had the short ribs and son had the jowl. All with great taste and savory making gravies with vegetables. We best enjoyed the short ribs, but son loved his cheeks. ;) .... it seemed I had tiny layers of oblong layers of the duck. Like nothing I've had before but did not seem to be a beast to me or my wife. The chocolate sponge dessert was delightful and shared between us. Now for the service, it seems they are understaffed like many places are now. They were working their tails off to do their best, I just didn't want rushed on this special day at this special place. ... I just think given it all it was more expensive than it seems it should. .No military discount this time ... I can see us giving the "Sheep" another go, but next time I hope Jamie has time to socialize, as she often does. The waitress was also too busy to be engaged but did her best with the time she had. I'd have liked to have learned more about the intricacies of the dishes, but I respect her for putting quality of what is produced from the kitchen first. The photos and menu in my pics should pique your curiosity.

Par none

Long, too long as it turns out, on my To Do list, we finally had dinner at this restaurant during our recently concluded vacation. My wife and I commenced the dining festivities with poached Bartlett pear salad that included whipped goat cheese, crispy prosciutto, candied walnuts and basil vinaigrette. Truly a yummy for both eye and tummy. My wife's FABULOUS entree was seared U-10 diver scallops nestled atop kobocha polenta with tossed pine nut and tamari butterscotch sauce. How I will I could duplicate this at home. Not to be outdone though I fear I have, I sunk my chops into the pan seared, crispy skin sea bass served over cavatelli with asparagus, dan dan sauce and hen of the woods mushrooms. OMG! We concluded the meal with a fabulous dessert. Service by Joel was excellent as well. A dining experience par none on our 14 day vacation.

Great food

Great food, nice vibes good wine list. This is s gem off the strip. Had 3 dishes, all were very good. Especially their salmon and bronzino. Good wine list and low corkage you if want to bring your own. Highly recommend.

A great idea and well executed

By A Joe I |

It is unusual to find a place that every course ordered is incredible, that the seasoning is spot on, that it is a relaxing yet true culinary experience and the pricing is reasonable...so call this place unusual. Location - nicely tucked away in the corner of a small locals strip mall, giving you a small chef owned kinda feeling. Tip- better to drive in together verses separate...not alot of parking. Atmosphere - love it. Kinda, comfy steampunk, contemporary look. Very tasteful. Tip- get the tables back and on the wall, the front door area gets real busy. Food - We’ve never had a bad dish, starting with the Shrimp Ceviche. If we didnt eat it fast enough it would have floated away. The fresh, light, spring like dish was a bouquet full of flavors. The Short Ribs melted as soon as it hit your lips. Tender meat severed over a polenta cake OMG, the chef nailed it on this one. A fork full of the perfectly seasoned meat, along with the crispy cake, swished around in the sauce was to die for. My wife’s Whole fired Trout had us both wondering, “How did they do that?”. No bones, just cut it like a steak...but it was whole and fired. Tremendous. Tip - save room for dessert. We had the special - some kinda brownie, with meringue and wafers in a Raspberry Peanut sauce (torched tableside)..hmmmmm Pricing - Extremely reasonable for Vegas and this level of Culinary artistry. Appetizer, Two Entrees and a special dessert for under $70. We hope to meet Chef Jamie one day because she has truly brought a unique culinary flare to Vegas with the blending of freshness, authentic seasoning and the mixing of two cultures.

What were they thinking?

By globbiztravel |

Picture this - after reading reviews of this restaurant that claimed they offered a heightened dining experience only to find the restaurant located in a strip mall with direct views into the parking lot. They could have put some plant walls or something to block the View. We get seated and the waiter comes by and immediately informs us that the restaurant received the best restaurant 2017 award for French Vietnamese food in the United States. Hmmmmm. I could think of a few others like Le Colonial and Slanted Door that far bypass this place. First ordered imperial rolls. This is usually a good indicator if the chef is authentic - in this case French Vietnamese is the category. The plate arrives and the imperial rolls are drenched in some sort of sauce that made the rolls completely soggy. Imperial rolls are supposed to be crispy on outside and moist / tender inside. Complete failure. We order two of their supposed most acclaimed dishes - the short rib and the scallops. Let’s start with the short rib served on polenta cake. There was no seasoning whatsoever on that short rib and very very bland. French Vietnamese food is known for its distinct flavors and there was none. The scallops was a complete disaster - they were so rubbery and overdone - typical indicator of frozen food. The pairing and assembly of the food on the plate looked like my scallops got lost in the Black Forest. Didn’t stay for dessert. Not a good deal, overpriced hype for terrible food.

Wow!!! A wonderful getaway from the Vegas strip

By Mickye S |

This was such a treat after 3 days of conference mania and typical Las Vegas atmosphere! The food experience was totally unexpected...I applaud the chefs creativity and style...I was intrigued by the idea of salmon skin tacos and what a treat those were! I could have just sampled their appetizers alone and would have been happy; in addition to the tacos we tried the Grilled Spanish octopus and the fried beef crisps (imagine a beef potato chip). For the entrees we tried the rainbow trout and duck confit...both were very good! If you are looking for a break from the Vegas scene...highly recommend the Black Sheep! And don’t let the “strip mall” like location intimidate you...it’s a top notch dining experience!

Restaurant Week

By Cgoeth |

We went to The Black Sheep for restaurant week. We really enjoyed it! Because there were four of us, we were able to try everything on the price fixe menu. The Vietnamese Spring Rolls were the big hit, so tasty! I had the lemongrass jerk chicken which was so very tender. This restaurant also did wine pairing with the menu at no extra cost and the choices were excellent. The service was excellent, attentive, informative but not overbearing. We will definitely return!

Creative food and amazing flavors

A fantastic place off the strip. Dishes are very creative and flavour combinations are fantastic. Service was friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. The short rib dish was amazing. Highly recommend.

Great food

By Lee S |

Booked this to get off the strip and try a more local restaurant. This has great reviews for good reason, unique menu and tastes, great service and a short Uber ride from the strip. Although it isn’t cheap it is great value considering the inventiveness, presentation and taste. If you want a break from the crazy strip then try this.

Great Ambience

I’ve visited this great spot a handful of times and always been impressed with the service and menus options that they offer!

Go for the Bar - Stay for the Food

By Jeanine B |

We heard about the Black Sheep from a local friend. So very glad we went. It’s a cozy restaurant with a nice vibe. Pretty casual. The waiter was extremely knowledgable about all things, the drinks were amazing. The prices were very reasonable, including the wines. The food was excellent and had a variety of choices. We loved everything we ate. The salmon tacos were very tasty and the beet salad was one of the best I have had. The short ribs were cooked perfectly. Our only regret is we had no room for desert - and we heard they were great too! Of note, parking can be a bit tricky. They have limited space in the lot, so leave a few minutes to find a good spot.

Culinary Artistry!

By coolseb |

Located in a strip mall 12 miles from “the strip”, this little restaurant packs a big flavor punch! Chef Jamie Tran has done an exquisite job of blending Vietnamese flavors with French influences. Our personable and attentive server, Hunter, thoughtfully guided us through the creative menu where we finally landed on octopus, trout, and bouillabaisse with a chocolate-coffee tres leches cake to finish off our culinary adventure. Wishin’ Chef Jamie would consider opening shop in Boston! Worth a trip from the strip!

Don’t try the happy hour and unfortunately the service was bad too

By Ben |

We arrived at the black sheep around 515 to try out the happy hour oysters. Once the waiter realized we just came in for the oysters and a couple beers he became very indignant. He turned from friendly to annoyed. When we asked about the happy hour beers he misdirected us to a beer that was exempt from the offer but didn’t let us know so our 4 dollar beers became 9 dollars. It’s not the money. We felt bamboozled. We were made to feel uncomfortable buying an offered service

French-Vietnamese Bistro Fare makes The Black Sheep a Southwest star

By Michael U |

Soon celebrating two years serving Spring Valley, an area notoriously lacking for Chef-driven Restaurants despite nearby hospitals and offices that should theoretically sport a crowd in search of quality, Sunday Brunch once again attested to The Black Sheep’s uniqueness in a market otherwise littered by the mundane. Tucked away at the corner of Durango and Warm Springs, nearby closures including The Goodwich and Paid In Full proving the Southwest a difficult place to get a foothold, it is immediately on entering The Black Sheep that diners realize there is something different about the space, a mural and organic flourishes giving the room an upscale feel while the Bar stocked in Top-shelf Spirits suggests a Mixology program ready to make a good impression. Toqued by Jamie Tran, years working with Charlie Palmer, Vincent Pouessel and Daniel Boulud giving the Chef a firm command of French technique applied across flavors from her Vietnamese heritage, guests are invited to order Beverages including bottomless Mimosas while perusing a list of thirteen plates ranging savory to sweet – and often a combination of each. Featuring smart and convivial service, something co-owner and operator Andy Hooper has assured since day one, it was declining Booze in favor of store-bought Orange Juice and Coffee from Lavazza that things started off quickly, four tiny Pastries for $8 not exactly a highlight as none appeared to be made on-site, though warm Strawberry Preserves helped and would be better served with just Bread and Butter. Hungry enough to order all but Oysters or Steak and Eggs, two items hard to make unique no matter how talented a Chef, it was instead recalling Chef Tran’s impeccable charred Peaches from 2017 that proper plates began with Smokey Heirloom Beets and Poached Pears, the former accompanied by Yogurt and charred Crumbles that play well off Candied Walnuts while the latter trends light, only to be punctuated intermittently by bites of Blue Cheese and Pecans. Deferring progression to the kitchen, Jamie’s cheerful personality still intact despite long hours in tight quarters, ‘course’ two arrived by way of Chicken Karaage turned-down from her version featuring Kimchi, each bite crispy and balanced by Waffles that sop-up a combination of Mustard Seeds and Syrup while The Black Sheep’s baked Pancake comes at the bargain price of just $9 for something easily sharable as an Entrée or Dessert. Resetting share plates and refilling Drinks during a short pause, the overhead soundtrack drifting from Tone Loc to GnR and then Drake, it was in another style of Pancake, this time two-for-$9, that Brunch’s best item was offered, a combination of Duck and Asian Pear complimented by Acid touching every part of the palate while Chef Tran’s Vietnamese Imperial Rolls accomplish similar with a bit of lingering heat. Again changing pace with a slice of French Toast, the removal of Herbs better allowing ground Sesame Seeds to shine amidst Berries and Brandy Syrup, those looking for a great Omelet need look no further than “Melody’s” offered with either Short Ribs or house-smoked Salmon, the Fish selected largely for its novelty and beautiful beside Mushrooms while Chef Tran’s Hash Browns are anything but ordinary thanks to both their crisp texture and complex spicing. Finishing with one more cup of Coffee and fresh utensils, appetites sated and the room approximately half-full, it was opting for Short Rib over Salmon that The Black Sheep’s Benny outperformed most thanks to not only the Meat but its interplay with Lime Hollandaise while Jamie’s Chilaquiles eschew Meat in favor of earthy Red Sauce brightened by fresh Cheese, tangy Cream and a fried Egg broken by the guest to help Tortillas remain crisp.

Amazing place

By Gill B |

We visited with family, as they recommended it as their best 'local' restaurant. It was so good that we went back a week later. It was one of the food highlights of our 4 week trip eating out across the States and Mexico. First off, our host was engaging and knowledgeable. Our cocktails were fabulous, I really enjoyed the Mai Tai. All choices of food were excellent, I had a vegan red curry lentil dish on the first visit and braised duroc pork belly the second.

An escape from the Las Vegas strip

By Erin0111 |

My husband found this place in a magazine article about off strip dining in Las Vegas. It was a bit of a jaunt, we were staying at the Venetian and it took about 15-20 minutes by Uber. The place is small and low key (as perfect contrast to the strip) it's located in a strip mall, but once inside you work have no idea. The decore is modern and subtle. The food was good, I found every dish we had to be missing g something. It was all good, don't get me wrong, but every dish (except the ceviche) felt like it needed a pinch more seasoning. But all in all, creative dishes, well executed and some awesome cocktails. I would recommend it and for sure plan to go back.

Excellent time

Bistrot vibe for that very interesting menu! One of the best sole ever, taste and presentation wise. We were a table of 6 friends, 3 couples into fine food. And we were not disappointed at all... Except maybe for the service pretty slow, we had to remind them a few times some of our orders... Drinks did not come all together which is not the best! But Saturday nights are busy, right? Definitely a nice place to try when you look for genuine good food while being in Las Vegas and don’t want to go to the Strip. Perfect for locals!

Attractive mom and pop sized restaurant with good service and good food..but I left here still hungry..

By Steff A |

Attractive mom and pop sized restaurant with good service and good food..but I left here still hungry.. Black Sheep Ambiance & Service: Gorgeous decor complete with hanging light bulbs, attractive full size bar, dark wood and dim lighting definitely gives a contemporary classy vibe good for a date night. They pack the tables close so it's a tight fit for everyone like a resto in Manhattan. fyi. Our server was friendly but we had to track her down later as the place filled up quickly for the dinner rush. She was trying her best. Black Sheep Cuisine: Me & the BFF shared the: Steak Tartare, Vegan Glass Noodles, Short Rib and the Bread Pudding. The steak tartare his minimal steak on the dish but was tasty. The glass noodles was a great side dish as the noodles and veggies were both fresh. The short rib was tender packed with flavor but was an appetizer dish serving size. I'm not really a bread pudding guy but Black Sheep's was top notch and I'd order it again. Were all the dishes social media friendly, creative and tasty? Absolutely yes. Were the serving sizes on the smaller side for the price leaving me still hungry after the meals ? Absolutely yes. Would I still come back and try more tasty dishes because it's also a cool scene. For sure! These are the cards you're dealt at the Black Sheep, play them as you wish. Enjoy!

Three times the charm,......!

By Franz K |

God,....bad, terrible,.....! That is the experience for me. In particular I take it to this level of venting my frustration. First, for weeks I am trying to get a seat at the "hottest ticket" in Las Vegas because of the hype Jamie Tran got on her appearance on Top Chef. I finally got the golden ticket! 5:15PM on a Sunday was the only option. Done,....! Yet during the entire dinner from 5:15PM to 7:30PM the restaurant was half empty! No full restaurant at 6PM, not at 6:30 or even at 7:00PM. So what is the problem? Service started with mediocre drinks, appetizers that are the size of an amuse bouche (hamachi). A bottle from the very small wine list fell on a Beaujolais for $75 because, the selection is very limited. Accompanied by Short Rib (tender and OK for what it is), the portions left to desire. One additional main, a Ribeye medium rare, appeared medium and chewy. That was accompanied by a Bottle of Italian red for $75, which actually was acceptable. Dessert,......a Creme Brûlée also in microscopic size and a Tres Leches Cake that went back because of a sharp fishy taste. It was taken off the bill and we are presented the bill,.....in a still half empty Restaurant. Long story short,.......NO! NEVER EVER AGAIN! Top Chef or not, that was lousy!

Amazing food for an amazing cause

By Lisa M |

My husband and I came here because the Black sheep was participating in restaurant week to support 3 Square. Much to our delight, not only did $40 per person get us amazing food, but paired wine, as well. My husband barely looked up from his tuna crudo in a orange gazpacho sauce, I savored my peach salad, and we both went to eggplant heaven with the flavorful yet simple eggplant pad thai. Macaron ice cream sandwich was fabulous enough to woo me in spite of the white chocolate drizzle. And I hate white chocolate!

Interesting Food

By Michael Horan |

New place with limited selection especially if you are looking for vegetarian or healthy. The unique combinations are very interesting.

Jamie should have won Top Chef if this is the food she served!

By Netanders |

This was a great meal! We would have loved to order one of everything. The beef crisps are scrumptious and beautiful. I wanted to lick the plate of the hamachi crudo. For our main course, I ordered the scallops and my husband ordered the duck. We ordered both of the desserts, but the horchata creme brulee was the absolute best! Service was great and we left very happy!

Amazing food

This restaurant is a total gem. The menu is excellent. We'd loved the fusion of ingredients and the exotic touch of every plate. Special mention to our waiter, Joel, who was extremely kind and also he speaks Spanish :).

This place is great

By Mighty2Mighty |

This place is a nice spot. The food was amazing. We went during restaurant week and the menu was great. Every course was tasty. Definitely one of my new favorite spot on the SW part of town. Their location is not the biggest but it definitely has a nice ambiance. Highly recommended.

Wow, fantastic

By Tom M |

We took 5 couples and drove from the Strip to The Black Sheep. Couldn't of been happier with the service and the food was out of this world good. The chef was outstanding. It was the best meal we had in Las Vegas during our entire stay.

The best food in Vegas is off the Strip! Black Sheep is proof of that.

By wanderingwulfs |

Everything about our experience at Black Sheep was wonderful! We became familiar with owner, Jamie, during her time on Top Chef. We had a trip planned to Vegas for business and realized that her restaurant was near our hotel. Of course we had to indulge! Every dish was a flavor bomb - we tried four of her appetizers: hamachi, salmon skin tacos, steak tartare and chicken dumplings, followed by their signature tres leche chocolate dessert. Everything was unique in flavor and beautiful in presentation. Service was attentive, and we enjoyed the opportunity to chat with Jamie at the end of our meal. The best food in Vegas is off the Strip!

Local Gourmet

By MDDdolphin |

Black Sheep is located at Durango and Warm Springs, not far from the 215W. It’s a fairly small but comfy space that permits easily heard table conversation. Parking was free and pretty easy on a Saturday night As long time Vegas residents, we are always happy to see thriving local restaurants that aren’t chains. Often, chefs who have trained under the big names will decide to try their hand at their own shop. Jaime Tran worked for Daniel Boulud (the French influence) and Charlie Palmer. Add her Vietnamese, Korean and Chinese heritage and you can understand the unusual fusion seen in her cooking. The menu is small, but changes regularly as she says she “gets tired” of doing the same things. Of course some folks may miss their favorite dishes, but we think new dishes are something to look forward to. The dishes are creative, flavorful and well presented. As with most great chefs, Jaime’s sauces, as expressed in the hamachi and short rib for example, really highlight the body of the dishes. The sauces are not heavily creamed as one finds with French cuisine, but make great use of spices as in Asian dishes. A bit of kick but not hot. Mains are not large, but neither are the prices compared to Strip joints, priced at $25-30, steaks are more. We found one appetizer and one main with a shared dessert were filling. One of the joys of a small owner, chef place is that she is always there, friendly and accessible, willing to discuss her works and history. We look forward to our next visit.

Enjoyed all 4 dishes. Will go back to try more. Great flavors.

By Martin L |

Most tourist never leaves the strip. Big mistake. A great new spot right down the street from us. Great new flavors and a new twist on some old dishes. Original and authentic. The octopus was the bomb. Great spicy tuna. Salmon poke in salmon skin tacos and a super tasty duck prosciutto salad. The best part is that prices are 20% lower than on the strip. Gamble and party like a local. Definitely will be back to try more dishes.

Best Dinner Ive ever had in Vegas

By Kathryn J |

We went here off a recommendation and it is one of the best meals I've ever had. We ordered a variety of appetizers and none of them disappointed. I had the lamb for dinner and didn't even need my fork. It was incredibly tender. The carrots accompanying my dish were cooked to perfection. They even asked about food allergies at the beginning and anytime a dish came out that had a potential of allergy they warned me. The craft cocktails were on point as well. If you can make it for happy hour I would! This place is off the strip but worth the trip.

Fun and memorable dinner

By rcote75 |

Where do I start?! My husband got me hooked on Top Chef and once we knew we were going to Vegas we both wanted to check out The Black Sheep and we are glad we did! It was about a 20 minute Lyft ride from our hotel on the strip but we had no problems getting a lyft there or back. Joel was our server and we absolutely loved him! We were lucky enough to get there early and the crispy salmon skin tacos were available and oh my, you have to try these! The beef tartare was absolutely amazing as was the octopus. For entrees I got the pork jowl and my husband got the short ribs. We both enjoyed our entrees immensely. Joel did a great job of spacing out our food and drinks and we had a wonderful time. We both can't wait to go back back next time we visit Vegas!

Great little fusion restaurant

By Robert L |

Came with family, ended up eating g bunch of appetizers for dinner. Favorites? Poached pear salad and bao sliders. Most interesting? Salmon skin tacos, because they fry the salmon shin into a taco shell. Only complaint, it's kinda far from the strip. Service excellent.

Great food! Fun place, great chef!

By Larry |

It was a fantastic evening at black sheep restaurant. The food was outstanding, a great mix of Asian fusion. From the boa sliders, to the pear salad, to the duck confit and the braised short ribs. Everything was fantastic. Then to finish off the night chef Jamie came to our table and let us take a picture. Made our whole night! Would definitely go again!

Top Chef Jamie in Behas

By PDXFoodie614 |

We came here after watching Top Chef Portland. We are from Portland and visiting Las Vegas. Cocktails were interesting, had the blackberry coco coco something……yummy. Also the mule. The pear goat cheese salad was a bit too heavy on the spice level on the pear itself. The rest was lovely . Grilled octopus appetizer had amazing flavors. Kind of spicy, but the rice cake complimented and tempered the sambal spice. Our scallop entree was beyond decedent. Basil spaetzl and buerre blanc sauce was so light but rich in flavor. We had the creme brûlée dessert which was interesting with toasted rice. Great meal and we would go back the next time we were in Vegas!

Very good local fresh menu. This unique menu has some foods I have never had before. Excellent service, fresh items. A trip off the strip worth making.

Visit this place, worth the driver/uber from the strip

By CPickeral |

This is a really good restaurant. Food was incredible, service was great, atmosphere nice. Would defiantly visit again. Not a ton of options but the things our party had were all really great. Prices are what I expected, appetizers were great. Staff were always there to offer suggestions which were all great.

Great place to feed

By Eric G |

Friendly server. Delicious eats. Moderate price. The place is located along a strip mall. We got extremely lucky to find a parking spot. Also, they prefer folks to make reservations rather than just show up,as they can get quite busy in the evenings. The bar is right on top of the dinning tables, so not quite family-friendly, but a place you can bring the little ones.

Great food, great experience!

By Jennifer S |

Great food, everyone was very happy with the food and great service and atmosphere. Definitely recommend, worth the drive from the strip.

Good Food. Good Service.

By Albert M |

Black Sheep was recommended to me. Was ideal for a Mothers Day brunch. Food was well prepared. Quite tasty. Also had very good service. Patient and kind wait staff. Would recommend.

Delicious unique food and cocktails

By Jltibbles |

My husband and I have been hearing about this gem for months and finally went. We were not disappointed. We sat at the bar and had a great experience. The staff was fun with great energy and the food was very unique. I am still thinking about the crispy beef! The salmon skin tacos were also excellent. The bartender makes a mean cocktail- very balanced and not too sweet. We can’t wait to go back and try more of the menu.

Incredible and creative.

By Dale W |

From the cocktails to the appetizers to the entree’s... I wanted to try them all. Our server was delightful, helpful, and gorgeous. Wildly creative dishes and drinks have made Black Sheep and definite go-to next time I come back to town. There was 8 of us, so we were able to sample a majority of the modest Asian/fusion menu. Everyone gushed about the food and the service. Go...just go. The creativity is amazing. The place is small, so make a reservation.

Wow - Off the Beaten Path

By Howard M |

Boy am I conflicted. I’d really like to keep the Black Sheep a secret that only I know. Then I could blindfold friends and take them to this gem without the risk of it becoming a victim of success. But that wouldn’t be fair to the folks who pour heart and soul into the food and service here. I’m normally not a big fan of fusion style places. This restaurant made me a believer. We had the Thai Basil Ceviche as an appetizer - it had a fascinating blend of flavors with just the right hint of heat to wake up the tastebuds. My wife had the Short Ribs and I decided on the Duck Confit. Both were masterful combinations of flavors and textures - absolute masteries of the fusion concept. Our server was attentive without being intrusive and the bartender has generous instincts. We came on an impulse - and a wonderful impulse it was - one of the best meals I’ve enjoyed in Las Vegas.

Everything was good

By Mighty2Mighty |

This one is easy to review... everything that we ordered was good. Our family ordered a lot of variety on the menu and we were not disappointed. The service was great. New favorite go to spot.

A TOP Favorite restaurant with uniquely fabulous menu!!

By DebArtist |

Heard about this restaurant from a mutual friend in California! Just had to try it from the rave reviews he was giving us! The restaurant is small, cozy and romantic with a Steam Punk modern atmosphere. The prices are very reasonable for the quality of food served here. On the Strip you would pay double for these dishes! We started out with the Thai Basil Shrimp Ceviché which was light and refreshing with a citrusy taste that was like summertime in every bite! We shared it, but I could have eaten it as my meal. Loved it! Definitely going to order that one again and again although their Starter Menu had SO many great selections to choose from! For our main courses we ordered the Indonesian Slow Raised Short Rib which came on a delicious rice cake combination of ingredients AND the Fried Whole Rainbow Trout with NO BONES! It was amazing! Wonderful flavor! We finished off the meal with a special flaming dessert with a thick mousse like consistency on a gram cracker type crust and meringue topping that our waiter flamed at the table. Every other table was checking it out! Loved it! It was SO light! Another keeper for when we bring friends next time. Loved this place! Will definitely be back many times!

Las Vegas JACKPOT for Vietnamese Fusion Food

By MooreVegasFood |

As a local, I love this restaurant. Being located on warm springs is nice because you avoid a lot of the traffic had you eaten on the strip! I took a customer here and a couple of colleagues. It’s a great work night dinner spot. This place has a lowkey, dimly lit, casual vibe...but it’s also total #DateNight vibes. The service here is nice because the staff really knows their menu items. The cocktails are very unique and super delicious! Their food is a mix of art and perfect culinary execution. I highly recommend this place for food lovers nor afraid to push their palette to the the next level while not going off in the deep end!

Was ten times better when it first opened.

By James B |

To say that we were disappointed is an understatement. The food was basically bland. We sat at the bar and were served by Jocelyn who was quite pleasant. The orders were taken timely and with a smile. My wife asked if she could substitute rice instead of crispy noodles. Jocelyn inquired, came back and said with a smile "no problem". What happened next though was inexcusable and confounding. A male waiter brought the octopus dish to the counter and in presenting the dish he remarked: and I quote "The regular chef isn't here tonight, so don't expect to get rice with this dish again. This is an exception." Well, I understand that as we asked to see if an exception could be made. I do not understand why a negative comment had to be made at all. Obviously, we knew the dish didn't come that way because we asked for a substitution. Why insult a paying guest? What's the point? Come to our place, spend your money and get insulted? His tone, demeanor, condescending arrogant expression, and delivery was downright insulting. I should remember that the waiter is more important than the guest. He works in a successful place and we just came to pay our homage. There went any chance of a romantic night out. Hospitality? Clearly not his cup of tea that night. Anyway, the octopus appetizer was soft and bland. It was not as good as she remembered it before. Crunchy and crispy. I tasted it and agreed. It made total sense. " The regular chef was not working", and this dish was not his stand in's skill set. When the trout came, it was no different. If I wanted deep fried trout in oil, I would have gone to Long John Silver and had cod instead for 1/5 the price. It just not the way to serve such a delectable fish. I should have returned it but chose not to. We did notice that most of the other patrons around us were ordering appetizers only. Did they know something we didn't? Or were the menu items too pricey? Anyway, that will be our last visit. Of the five times we ate there, this was the absolute worse and a huge disappointment. The honeymoon is over. There are better places to spend your money.

Fine Dining at it's Best!

By Nellie Christine |

My husband and I decided to take a trip to Vegas since it's been a while since my last trip out here. However, I didn't really come here to drink, or party, my main purpose was to relax by the pool, but most importantly, TO EAT!! I did a little research online and found The Black Sheep, which was not only voted RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR, but also the head chef, Chef Tran, was voted CHEF OF THE YEAR by Eater. There was no doubt I had to try them for myself. Chef Tran has a Vietnamese background, which she fuses with classic dishes like duck confit and ceviche, all with a modern twist. We were blown away by each and every single dish. It truly was fine dining at its best, but guess what, without the cost! My husband could not stop talking about how amazing the food was. This place was approximately 15 minutes off the strip but trust me when I say it's worth the detour! My top recommendations are the rolls, ceviche, and my absolute favorite....the salmon skin tacos!!

The Black Sheep was recommended to us by several people and it had great reviews. Never one to pass up a good meal, we went. And boy are we glad that we did! It is in a typical strip mall, however walking in to the restaurant, you are warmly greeted and it just looks like something special could be going on there. They had an interesting cocktail list and we had to try a few of them. They were very well made craft cocktails and were delicious--the Kentucky Mule, Black Manhattan, Pisco Sour (perfect!) and The Rosita (a smoky, spicy papaya mezcal drink). Onto the food. The starters that we had were the shrimp ceviche, salmon skin tacos, ahi tartare, the grilled octopus and the bao sliders. All were uniquely flavored/spiced and were fresh and delicious. The grilled octopus especially shined--succulent, tender with the perfect char, sweet, savory and spicy. The salmon skin tacos were also very special. For an entree we shared a whole fried rainbow trout (Asian style) that was boneless, light and flavorful. The desserts were artfully presented and were decadent. The wine list was not huge but they had some great selections that would fit any budget. Speaking of which, such a quality meal as this would cost 2-3 times as much on the Strip. Service was pleasant and attentive. We cannot recommend this restaurant highly enough and look forward to returning.

HIDDEN GEM of Vegas, Wow!!!!

By mrlasvegas2u |

So, we live in the green valley side of Vegas, and this restaurant was a 20 minute drive from us. My cousin invited us, so we went to check this out. Man, I am so glad we did. This restaurant is simply AMAZING!!! Everything I ate ..we ate, we delicious!! Loved the decor, the service...and the bathroom was super clean. Definitely call and make reservations!! They were slammed. Salmon skin tacos, vietnamese imperial rolls were out of this world. Fried beef crisps were pretty good. My wife had the vegan red curry lentils and pan seared scottish king salmon, and she loved it. My cousin and wife also tried the west coast oysters, and they said it was fresh and very good. I had the spicy vietnamese curry chicken, and it was very good, but it wasn't spicy at all. The dessert was really good. This is going to be one of my favorite go to places now!!!

Great food and service

By DaltonHer |

Our waiter Hunter was excellent and very knowledgable of what was on the menu and the ingredients. Cool music and atmosphere. All os the food we ordered was great with the exception of the Octopus which had a great spiciness but was too salty. I would return as their menu changes periodically.

Off the strip

By mc1ndy |

Ventured off the strip after reading positive reviews of The Black Sheep and we were not disappointed. From craft cocktails to appetizer Imperial Rolls to the short rib entree, we enjoyed it all. Layered flavors pop. Casual ambiance in strip mall belies the variety and quality of this very nice restaurant. Worth the Uber ride!

We had a wonderful time here. Arrived a little late so I kept adjusting my reservation time. It wasn’t as full as I expected for a place with such good credentials. We had salmon skin tacos, ahi tuna tartare and shrimp ceviche for starters. If I had to rank it ceviche was the best amount the three. Then the tacos. For our mains we got the duroc pork and short rib. Both were amazing. But since I’m a beef eater the short rib was a winner. Try the flama blanca if you plan on drinking. Service was great. Our waiter was able to explain everything.

Must visit if you have a car!

Fabulous cocktails fabulous food can't say enough about this asian-influenced menu tasteful thoughtful and extremely flavorful. Salmon skin tacos are to die for Spanish style octopus starter and bouillabaisse entre were outstanding.. I would put this right up there with some of the best restaurants in the world, and I've traveled and eaten my way around the world!

Must Go - Amazing Food and cocktails

By MarySt54 |

This was an amazing experience from start to finish. The food was original, inventive and delicious. The cocktails and wine list were wonderful. Our waiter, Dale, was fun and recommended great food items from the menu. We went with Vegas friends who had been there before. Chef Jaime stopped by and it was great to meet her. There are many restaurants inVegas but this should be on the top of your list.

Excellent Drinks, Food, and Service

By JunoMI |

This is one of the best, new restaurants to open in Vegas and has amazing food! It's sure to be a local favorite for years to come. The atmosphere is really cool and the food quality is comparable to Carson Kitchen. I had the hanger steak and bao sliders and both of them were phenomenal. The hanger steak was as tender as a filet and tasted really, really good. My friend had the jerk chicken. I tasted that too and it was also amazing. It fell right off of the bone. Definitely give them a try because they have great food!

Loud, Very Loud

By John A |

We have a group that meets for brunch monthly. A foodie chose The Black Sheep for August. Big mistake. The noise was so loud you had to yell at the person across the small tables. Menu is different and limited I had the most expensive pancake (singular) I have ever ordered ($9). At that, I was told it would take longer than the others to prepare. A pancake takes a long time to cook??? Those ordering salads were told they were really just appetizers. Seems popular, but we will not be returning

Quaint restaurant

By 28BRICKHOUSE69 |

We had 8:30 pm reservations. This was our second visit in the past month. We are from out of town, but love the food. We arrived 10 minutes late, but our table was still reserved. We were seated and noticed a very large party was nearby. The restaurant was full, but not uncomfortably so. The service was attentive and spot on. You would never know there was a large party taxing the staff. The food was delicious and memorable. We ended up closing the restaurant, but the sraff did not rush us. The bau sliders and trout were keepers. We will be returning the next time we are in town for a sporting event.

Excellent , interesting food.

Our one venture off strip was worth the effort. Pan Asian influenced menu by a Chef with solid European credentials. Dishes were clever with great flavour impact in virtue of great spicing and a nicely judged use of heat. Ingredients first rate and and everything presented well. Confit duck on Israeli couscous the stand out with perfect duck and brilliant spicing. Enjoyed everything we had and appreciated the value for money here after Strip prices. Small, useful and fairly priced wine list.... the Alsatian Gewurztraminer a welcome surprise. Professional, friendly and helpful service in a restaurant filled with both locals and Strip blow-ins. As my rating indicates you don't have to eat high end to have great food. It's out of town but don't let that deter you.

I bow down to Chef Jamie chef extraordinaire !’

Pls do not leave Las Vegas without making an off the strip stop to this fantastic urban chic friendly and wonderful culinary experience Aka The black sheep. Chef . Jamie has got it going on!! Fantastic wine and cocktail choices! Highly recommend and no where the prices of the hotel gourmet restaurants.

Third visit

By westie2 |

This was our third visit since its 2017 opening and it did not disappoint. My wife and I shared a delicious though overpriced poached pear salad that included whipped goat cheese, crispy prosciutto, and candied walnuts enhanced by a basil seed vinaigrette dressing. We the Asian inspired cioppino that included cultivated black mussels, shrimp, surimi, bok choy and Vietnamese fried bread in a delicious tomato based broth. We will be back on our next trip you may be assured.

Simply a must! Get off the strip and make the trip here

By Steve D |

Absolutely blown away by this little gem of a restaurant. Located in the suburbs and at a strip mall, it hides the great quality and atmosphere of a top class restaurant. The bar and wine list was excellent but the food tops it all. Flavousome, interesting and a pleasure to eat. The octopus was incredibly tender and amongst the best I ever had. Prices are very reasonable and good size portions. A must visit in Vegas but be sure to book, the place is very busy as th he locals have found it and try keep it to themselves.

Not really Asian, and not cheap!

By Brad R |

Thought I was going to a Vietnamese place. Wrong! I could best describe this place as Asian fusion. Good food but not run of the mill fare. Trendy. Great people watching. Lots of people who appeared to be on first dates here. Had the ground pork sliders. Very good. Spicy fried octopus was even better. Trout was excellent. Lamb belly was filling and good. Cheese cake was tasty and peach macaroon ice cream was perfect ending. Price for 4 was $175 with no alcohol so the place is not cheap. Not a family place at all.

An interesting restauarnt

By aledm |

We enjoyed some of our dishes because they offered a little different take. Try the crispy beef chips

Never had fried Beef Tendons before...

By JBT2 |

We had to order two plates of them we liked them so much... Asked in they could just order the tendons, but they explained that the restaurant got a whole side of beef and stripped out the tendons themselves. Making them is apparently quite a process. They come out like pork rinds, only better. We had a good time.

good spot

By Aaron J |

I was doing a soft look into making the Black Sheep a possible meeting spot due to its location and its unique menu. I thought their wine list was a little limited due to their moniker of being a wine bar but let me qualify myself as a total observer level wine expert. I was there during happy hour and got some of the apps. I think their food is strong and while the space is definitely limited there, its a solid place. enjoyed it. I would call for reservations if you are going at peak times.

Awesome

By Avinash K |

Black Sheep was on my radar thru grapes. I finally got to try it. I was a very happy camper after having dinner there. Our server, Shepard recommended dishes which were amazing. Salmon skin tacos- 5*. Pork belly-5* melted in my mouth. Beet salad was good. Black Sheep is off the strip but worth the drive. Black Sheep is also very wine friendly. Ask for Shepard, he is awesome. Not to mention chef Jamie has amazing creation. Black Sheep is my new favorite restaurant in Las Vegas. A must!

Too many unnecessary flavors

By Negrilgurl |

The menu is more like American food with Asian infusion.I love a place where I can taste something different but let the flavors to together. I tried the octopus and it was tender, but the tasted more burnt meat (from being grilled) with sauces. Also, got pork belly and it had this unnecessary carrot puree and it took over the taste of everything on the plate. I could barely taste the meat, the noodles just tastes like they were carrot noodles. The service is great and the ambiance is great for a small space. They had pretty fair prices. Maybe I would try again if they change the menu.

Very satisfied group of diners

By gyw |

Food: Not sure what cuisine this fits in but there is some Asian influences. Overall, everyone left stuffed and satisfied. As other reviewers have stated, the Imperial rolls and the Spanish Octopus appetizers were very tasty. We all tried different main dishes and shared. Most favored was the Lamb Belly followed by the Braised Short Ribs. Striped Sea Bass and Rainbow Trout were ok. Also, the drink specials from the bar were great too!. Service was attentive and very informative. Location - this place is pretty far away from the Strip in the southwest area, in a nice strip mall. Very much a neighborhood location. I could see myself stopping off for a drink after work and sampling the appetizers.

Top Chef = Top Restaurant

By sjoyce24 |

What can I say? Best meal we had in Vegas. Specifically went due to seeing Jamie Tran as a contestant on Top Chef and this place did not disappoint. Small and cozy restaurant with top notch service and creative food. Ordered two drinks and the bartender (who was also our waitress) was more than happy to make a whiskey sour the egg whites and it was very good. My husbands Old Fashioned was also excellent. Started meal with two appetizers...Imperial Spring Rolls and Pear and Apple Salad. Outstanding flavor combinations on both dishes. My husband ordered the Flat Iron Steak and I had the short ribs. Yummy all around and short ribs were so tender. Definitely would return if we visit Vegas again. Worth the trip off the strip.

Awesome place! Great food great ambiance.. it is in the Sw las Vegas.. quite a drive from our house.. but worth the drive.. y'all need to check out this place!

Great flavor combinations

By DoctorCP |

We were in town visiting family and chose The Black Sheep for dinner before a show on the strip. The place is quaint ie not huge so reservations are recommended. The cocktail menu was larger than the food menu. The coffee martini was amazing!!They don’t have a giant food menu but the options are fresh and unique. And the items change periodically with the seasons. The beef crisps were very cool, like pork rinds. The salmon and flank steak were good. I asked for medium rare and felt it came out more on the rare side. And save room for dessert! Pumpkin ice cream and the brownie sundae. Yes please!

Off The Strip and worth the trip

By Joemar714 |

Can't say enough about this cool dining spot. Oysters, Salmon skin tacos, Fried beef crisps all great apps. The four main courses were definitely the stars of the show though. Rainbow Trout, Short Ribs, Lemongrass Duck Confit (OMG)! Not to mention the vegan choice they had for my wife, otherwise we would not have dined here,The Vietnamese glass noodles another stand out. Kudos to our waiter Bronson who did a fantastic job from beginning to end.

Worth the trip off of the Strip

By lspiegs |

The bar tender at our hotel recommended Black Sheep and we are thrilled that we took his advice. 15 min minutes and a $15 Uber ride and you are in culinary heaven. Food is creative and delicious. Staff is friendly and aim to please. Wine list is excellent and the prices are excellent. Best meal we have had in Vegas in quite some time.

Return visit

By westie2 |

Returning to a restaurant previously deemed worthy of a 5 star rating is often a recipe for disappointment, but not in this case. Though the menu has largely undergone a complete overhaul since our May, 2019 visit, we were up to the challenge. My wife chose pan seared striped bass over cavatelli pasta, rapini, dan dan sauce and sauteed hen of the woods mushrooms. I countered with lomongrass duck confit with yellow curry couscous, Chinese broccoli, lap ceung sausage and charred plum sauce. Each dish was beautifully plated, exceptionally creative and delicious. With there be a round 3? Stay tuned to this channel for exciting updates.

Jamie crushed it!

By orlandofoodlover18 |

I go to Vegas a couple of times a year and always try to find really interesting restaurants. After watching Top Chef this year I knew I had to try Jaime's restaurant (who should have won btw). We started with the steak tartare and Imperial rolls. The tartare presentation was beautiful and tasted great. That was my wife's favorite, but I preferred the Imperial rolls. Really great flavor. My fried ordered the whole rainbow trout and I had the slow braised short rib. We both finished our plates. The short rib dish was one of the best things I've ever had in an entree. I highly recommend king out and trying her restaurant. If you love unique and bold flavors you won't be disappointed.
