Originally was going to call it Average - but I changed my mind

By Tony G |

Originally, I was going to give this place 3 circles. I am glad I postponed my review. This is a quaint, Irish-type pub in Philadelphia. I went with a group of about 24 people. Firstly, they accommodated us very well - which is no easy feat. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich, which was very tasty. It was a little spicy, but I like it that way. The down side was the french fries - VERY salty and soggy. If the fries were hot, crisp and had less salt, I would have given this place 5 circles. Service was very good. Using my convention - I would go back and order the same dish - telling them no salt on the fries this time.

Stoped in for a Smithwicks

By Stephanie G |

This was close to our hotel so we stopped in for a Smithwicks and Shepherds pie. Cold beer and good food. Staff was friendly.

Solid neighborhood pub

By twisteddiva |

The place was recommended by the concierge at the Westin as a good, solid neighborhood watering hole with regular pub food and a good selection of beer. Happy hour is between 4 and 7 and when we got there the place was jammed. The noise level was almost deafening, making conversation rather difficult, but the waitress was friendly, our salads were really good and the vibe was nice and laid back so no complaints.

Comfort food comfort food comfort food....

By Explorations by Erika |

Excellent, hearty, well portioned Irish meals and delectable choices to tease the taste buds. I left very happy and FULL. We came in when it was relatively slow on a friday night, within an hour the upper level was packed, and was all being cared for by what seemed to be just one server. Considering it was just one gentleman serving us, as well as many others, I would say the service was very good, I never had an empty water glass and food came to our table relatively quickly. I loved the Shepard's Pie and the Cuban sandwich, YUM!

Wonderful gastropub

By ccshirley |

Such good food - huge portions with reasonable prices. Great whiskey selections. The pub holds it's own among the top Rittenhouse square picks - might even surpass, actually. If I lived in downtown Phila this would be my "local"

Perfect Spot for Guinness, Soccer, & Conversation

By Bunker Blake |

The Black Sheep is everything you want in a classic Irish pub—welcoming, cozy, and effortlessly charming. It’s my go-to spot on Saturdays for a few pints of Guinness while watching soccer, and it never disappoints. The bartenders are knowledgeable, friendly, and experienced, making every visit feel easy and enjoyable. The jukebox plays great tunes, adding to the laid-back atmosphere. You can tell the owner puts his heart and soul into the place—he’s often there, which I really appreciate. It’s a no-frills, reliable watering hole with fair pricing for the area—something I truly value. Seating is well thought out, with a mix of bar seats, high tops, and low tables to accommodate groups of all sizes. The big windows let in great natural light, making it feel more inviting than other darker bars in the city. On nice days, they open the front windows and have a sidewalk counter, making it a great spot to enjoy a drink while people-watching. While I haven’t explored the full menu, people always eat around me. The bar downstairs looks like a fun option for private gatherings, and I believe there’s another bar upstairs, though I haven’t made it up yet. The Black Sheep is a true neighborhood pub—welcoming, no-fuss, and always a great spot to catch up with friends or take a break during a day in Center City. I’ll keep coming back!

Cheers!

A nice combination of pub and tavern. Good happy hour with delicious homemade hummus and pita chips to start. Very diverse menu and fabulous service.

Good lunch

By RangeRooney |

Stopped here for lunch on a Friday while I was downtown. I'd heard of this place as it's where the local Manchester United supporters club meets and it didn't disappoint. The bartender was friendly and chatty, which is always a good thing for somebody traveling alone. I had the Chicken and Chorizo Quesadilla which was delicious. I know many think it might be odd in an Irish pub, but it doesn't get hot in Ireland so a lighter lunch was definitely welcome. You might have trouble with parking but this is downtown Philadelphia, so that is a common issue. I'll go back during my next visit, hopefully during a Manchester United game.

Refreshingly Still Good!

By John P |

I haven't been to Black Sheep in about a year. I dined here with a colleague and we both were pleasantly surprised by how good the food was. The service was superior! Kudos to management. They clearly have a good thing and keep it going!

Way too loud and crowded...

By Marc H |

Way too loud and crowded for a "pub."

Great spot

By Khal S |

Wow what amazing place to go and hangout with friends. It's small place but that was good thing. Even though The chicken wings was very tasty, they brought to me with hot sauce so I couldn't finish it. Overall I will go back again and again to this good spot.

Great food and atmosphere

By Chelsea H |

My boyfriend and I decided to stop in for a drink while walking around Center city. Had to be one of the nicest pubs I've been to. The staff were all friendly and helpful. Food was amazing and it was fairly priced. It wasn't too crowded and it was a very cozy setting. I would recommend anyone to stop in.

Good Food Fast service

By Fred B |

Enjoyed the Eggs Florentine on the Sunday Brunch menu. Got in on a Sunday afternoon without reservations. The service was quick and friendly. .

Stairs, noise and drunkeness

By ALLSLC |

Close to our hotel with a good menu. Shockingly loud--to the point that you cannot hear your table mate at all. They sat us downstairs since it was "quieter". I would use that designation lightly. The food was decent but since we were downstairs, the bartender was our server and would go missing for long periods of time...When it was time to cash out, we actually had to go look for someone. Clearly a hopping place for drunk young people on trivia night. Keep that in mind...if you are neither drunk, nor young. Also, tons of stairs.

Great warm and inviting pub in the heart of Philly!

By veglover38 |

Found this great local place walking on a drizzly e ending downtown. Stepped inside and the atmosphere was magical. Cozy and inviting. Food was exceptional. We had the cod sandwich at the recommendation of the waiter and we were not disappointed. Great that you have a choice of salad or fries. The cod sandwich was fantastic with a wonderful tasty slaw with jalapeños. The salad was above my expectations and the fries were fresh cut and crunchy with a dipping sauce that we spicy and delicious. Great selection of drafts as most pubs in Philly offer. Don't pass this great restaurant by. It is a wonderful place.

Nice place

By BMH628 |

Went in today to get out of the cold wind and were very pleased. Lucky to get the lady table right by the fireplace. Was a soccer game on so a little loud but great atmosphere. Lunch was delicious. Large portions, served relatively quickly but overall service was excellent. Food was hot, tasty and reasonably priced. Very enjoyable place to go.

Nice pub. Good food.

By C0rgiL0ver |

Very nice Irish pub with excellent fish and chips. The usual Irish beers were joined with a nice selection of local craft beers. The main barroom is not particularly large so a table full of drunk middle age men created an unacceptable noise level. But that didn't detract from the overall experience.

Amazing food

By kerri t |

The baked mac and cheese is a must have! It's considered an appetizer, but I ordered it as my meal. I was stuffed by the end of it because it's so rich. But was by far the best mac and cheese I've ever eaten. My boyfriend ordered the filet mignon sliders and said they were delicious. It's a no frills dive bar, but nothing wrong with that!

Very good food! Loud for euro football!!!

By Mike S |

I happened upon this place with my kids right before an amazing performance by the Westminster Brass at 10th Presbyterian up the street. My kids loved their chocolate chip pancakes and my teenager enjoyed her pulled pork on a bagel. My lamb sliders were delicious. I love lamb! The fries are very tasty and the dipping sauce is addicting. This is a sports bar with noise to match but the tasty food, solid service and cold beer make it a great visit.

Good pub and good vibe inside

By Nwamre |

The owner was there and very nice guy - the staff is kind and the food is okay. A place where you feel welcome.

Nice pub

By JayCes |

Stopped here after a meeting and had a couple drinks and some food. The person who greeted me at the door was very nice and accommodating. Food was good, beer was cold, service was good. I'd stop here again, seems like a spot with regulars.

Good but Loud

By Coilltebabe99 |

Had lunch here during quick visit to Phili yesterday, nice fireplace and service was good. Had the Colcannon, Sliders and introduced husband to Scotch Eggs. Loved everything but the Sliders, which he thought were awesome, was very loud but we enjoyed it. Couple of craft beers on the menu which he tried. Came back later for a drink around 11pm, packed to the door and bartender on the main floor was by himself, he was pumping drinks out but there was still a bit of a wait.

Just OK

By Hobby |

Visited early evening, quiet dark inside and resembled a an old fashioned English pub, good glass of Pinot Grigio and pint of Lagunitas, sadly when I asked the waitress and the bar man when strength the beer was or what gave it its citrus flavour they had no idea! That was not v impressive.

Delicious food and friendly service

By SJerseyJ |

I have been to this pub on two separate occasions, both times I've found the food to be excellent and the service friendly and efficient. It can be a little loud in the main bar area for a family, but there is seating in the back near the fireplace which would accommodate.

Great local pub

By swlilsis |

First floor and basement are great. Warm and comfortable place for friends. Drinks are generous and bartenders are great.

Good fish and chips, but I didn't get the chips

By DAuntDeb |

Stopped in late after a long travel day. Small comfortable pub I would frequent often if I lived here. Allowed me to substitute a larger salad for the chips. The fish was light and fresh. The opera signing patron was a bit much but everyone was having a good time and she had a good voice. They have Quizzo on Wed night

Lunch While on A Business Trip

By Kathy H |

Went here for lunch as it was about 1 block from my hotel, Blu Radisson. It is a small place but wasn't too crowded. Good food and good service. Our group had soup, salad, Shepherd's pie (which had been recommended). All good.

Local flavor

By Bugman31888 |

The wife and I were looking to eat somewhere with the local flare. We found this place onTA and decided to give it a try. The Eagles game was on an the place was packed. Had the baked mac and cheese as an appetizer. Very creamy. Wife had the sliders and i had the shepard's pie. One of the best meals we had all weekend. Friendly waitress also

Great local pub!

By Mike O |

Lively local pub with great food. The service was above and beyond. Our server Blair was pleasant and super attentive. The kitchen closes at 11 on Saturday night but we sat down at 10:45 and they were happy to have us and we were not rushed. The hummus platter was great. We highly recommend!

Nice Irish Bar

By Terri E |

We stayed close to this establishment and wandered in three days in a row. Something about this bar just kept drawing us back. We loved the beers and the atmosphere.

Great pub with good beer and pub food

By Secondari_NYC |

Recently had nice dinner at the Black Sheep. Good selection of beers on tap and in bottles. Great mac n cheese! Very good bangers and mash. The decor is pub. The service is courteous.

Great food and very friendly

By 329john123 |

I was yearning some English grub so where better than an Irish pub?! Anyway, the waiter was really friendly and the food was excellent. I had the Shepherds Pie (The waiter already knew it should be called Cottage Pie as it was made with beef rather than lamb), and we had a lamb chop starter. Both were delicious. The Philly Steak sandwich was also excellent. I was surprised when we got the bill as it seemed so cheap for the amount of food and accompanying drinks. Highly recommend this place.

Great for a bite

By Amethyst R |

We go to this place every time we are heading to the football game.great food comes out quick and perfect. Burgers are delicious, huge!! Love them with the goat cheese and almost all the toppings they offer. I like the micro brew selections. Make this a stop for a quick bite

Nice place in Center City Philly

By CenterCty_Traveler |

Had a great visit for Happy Hour. Black sheep offers a buck off the drafts. The bar had a great crowd for the happy hour. The pub grub menu is good and a good value.

Great jukebox and beer

By NJLuv2Travel13 |

We stayed at the 1715 Rittenhouse boutique hotel and wanted a local spot for a night cap before calling it a night. This was the perfect choice. Was a block away from our hotel. The jukebox was awesome (Oasis, Grace Potter!!!!).... Beer was cold, tasty and it was a great crowd for a late Weds night. They had trivia, which was a nice break in between good songs - but reminded me I shouldn't try out for Jeopardy anytime soon. Great place and glad we stopped in!

Great pub with good food.

By Reisender1031 |

Close to Rittenhouse Square and the Kimmel Center, this place is very good. Great food, friendly staff, and a nice old-world aesthetic. I had the traditional bangers & and mash, and it did not disappoint. The other food that was being delivered to tables looked amazing as well. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g60795-d481380-r949348215-The_Black_Sheep_Pub_Restaurant-Philadelphia_Pennsylvania.html#

Great for Quizzo Wed night with Johnny Goodtimes. They've got darts downstairs!

great steak

By Tricia195 |

smashing pub/restaurant. food was great, we had new york strip steaks, but sneaking a look at other plates it all looked good! they serve plenty of draft beers which I think change regularly.the staff were good and very quick and efficient. give it a try.

Fun staff, Great beer, small venue

By HoldenBea |

Firstly, I recommend getting there before happy hour ends at 7pm. 5 dollars apps as big as your head Good selection of beer, including chimay on draft. Scotch eggs are a must, despite what your cardiologist might say :)

Be surprised by the food

By Steve H |

If you go with a pub expectation, you will be pleasantly surprised by the food. Not an expansive menu but solid traditional, with a great mix. Service is friendly and very efficient. Expect lively interaction, not a subdued setting. With those expectations you will be pleased. This is a small, customer friendly corner pub.

Great pub food and more

By sfmmr |

My teenage son loved the vibe and architectural detail of this restaurant. He insisted that his Cuban was better than any meal we had in Boston. I had the fried fish and chips. The fish was extremely fresh and light. Was great with my pear cider pairing.

Wonderful Fish & Chips

By keebj86 |

We are from out of town and visited this place on a Thursday evening following a conference. They were busy, but still managed to find us a table at 7:30 for 6. They had cold beer and a nice bar area in the basement to wait at. The food was worth the wait. I got one of my favorite Irish dish, Fish and Chips. Cooked and seasoned well, which a pretty good side salad. Price was reasonable for downtown and service was great!

good beer selection, great character

By CincInnatus |

Look for the red door near the Radisson Warwick & Marriott. Great Old-World charm in main floor dining room with fireplace. Good beer selection. Shepherd's pie was a little too greasy and needed more seasoning for my taste.

Bowl of Raman would have been more filling

By MiserDD |

I ordered the Shepherds pie (which in Ireland would be called Cottage pie since it's made with beef vise mutton). It was good but incredibly small for $14. More like what most places would call a side. The dish was very shallow. Maybe this is just because Philadelphia is expensive compared to Raleigh, Atlanta, Memphis, etc... but there, this size portion would be a side and for $14 it would be 2-3 times this size. Beer was fine. I had to go to the bar and get my server's attention any time I wanted to order anything since she was on her phone... sign of the times I guess.

Friendly and welcoming

By PaulSnood |

Great neighborhood feel, and a nice upscale place to watch a game or just relax and wind down with a craft beer.

Good food, but extremely loud

By Beth S |

I went here woth my husband and a friend and sat at a small high-top table. This place was much smaller than I thought and as far as I could tell was pretty much all high-tops and the bar, which wasn't a huge deal for us. However, my friend was across the table from me and I could barely hear her. I felt like we had to shout the entire time. On the good side, the food was incredible. They give you a dipping sauce with the fries that's addictive. I loved my chicken sandwich, my husband had great bangers and mash, and my friend had a good crab cake sandwich. If you don't mind having to yell your conversation (or maybe if you come at like 2PM, I was there at 6PM on a Friday), it'll be good.

As good a pub as we've seen

By tomcat33333 |

What a wonderful place. Servers were friendly and helpful, setting us up with a table by the gas fireptlace where we could watch the basketball game we wanted to see. Menu was varied, including a big selection of beverages. We both chose the lamb shank, which was the best lamb we've ever had. It's not cheap to eat there, but the atmosphere, appointments, service and menu make it a special treat. Next time we visit Philly, we'll go back.

Cozy place for a drink, but stick to the beers

By Rich R |

Six of us visited Black Sheep after seeing an intense play at the Wilma that Sunday afternoon, so a few of us were ready for a martini. We specified dry Bombay martinis straight up, and got two martini glasses full of icey slush. She apparently shook them, then poured all the contents of the shaker into the glasses. When we complained, my partner, who got all water, got a new, acceptable one, and I was told I would have to buy another if I didn't like it. Huh... The waitress, although tough, was attentive and resposive otherwise. I ordered beer after that charade, hard to screw up a beer. We started with Calamari & Shrimp app, for $10, it was tasty, but only a few meager shrimp for $10. Dinner was good, I got a single tasty, tender pork chop with veggies, but not very big for the $17 price. My partner got the chicken breast, didnt rave about it. The others were pleased with their meals. They turned down the loud music upon request, but it creeped back up again in 15 minutes. Nice gas fireplace and a place to have a good time with friends. The tip was added to the bill. Not sure it was worth the price, with plenty of other places to try in the area.

Great Bar

By RCC626 |

Traditional Irish Pub with a great beer selection and authentic antique bar and fireplace making it a great place to go in the winter. The food is pretty good too.

Good Rittenhouse hangout

By Tom H |

Hung out with some friends here for a few hours. Place has a good atmosphere, and the beer and whiskey selections were solid. Ordered the burger and was impressed - far better than I expected for basic “pub food”.

Authentic British Pub..excellent food and service

By AkHasan |

First, Michael and Sonja are excellent servers....On point and the right amount of attentiveness. Me and my boo when here for dinner on New Years day during the Mummers parade. The place was crowded, lively and festive. We were promptly seated upstairs. The Guinness was properly poured, the beef shanks were flavorful and the mashed potatoes were just right.

The OTHER beer place near Rittenhouse Square (the first being Monk's). Nice little menu, good burgers, lots of choices...

By LoveParkLady |

The OTHER beer place near Rittenhouse Square (the first being Monk's). Nice little menu, good burgers, lots of choices in drinks. Friendly and unpretentious.

Near our hotel in Rittenhouse area; good food

This was a very popular pub but we managed to get a table without booking. Good, well cooked food, lovely atmosphere. Recommended.

What You Want in a Pub

By Andrew H |

It's got a nice pub atmosphere, with good, reasonably priced food. The fish and chips were really good, and they had a fine selection of cider.

Great place for a private party

By Honeymooners809 |

We went to a private party at the Black Sheep and it was a lot of fun. Great food and fun atmosphere.

Traditional bar with very good food

By jfdunphy1 |

Had a training to attend down the block, and the trainer had made arrangements for a networking meet and greet with some food. The fried chicken, egg rolls, and other horse deserves were really quite good. Really comfortable bar and restaurant, lots of people without being overcrowded. Obviously a successful place, and things were handled smoothly without any stress. Goes on my list of places well worth revisiting.

Small Town Pub Feel

By klj913 |

I stopped in here for a few drinks before heading to dinner. It had a small town pub feel. Not crowded, easy to hear conversations and the service was perfect. We ordered a few small plates and the food delivered quickly.

Think British pub

By Les M |

If it looks like a British pub, smells like one and serves ten brands of beer, then you may feel at home here. Pub type menu but very well done and cheap as chips. If you are in the area, not crowded for lunch and really good fun. And who knows, Fergy might show up.

A Proper Pub

By newspapertaxi |

Visited on 3 occasions during our stay in Philadelphia, 2 evening and 1 lunchtime (for the World Cup) and enjoyed it each time. On both evenings we took advantage of happy hour with cheap drinks and cheap, but tasty, food. The upstairs bar suited us best, a bit quieter, though the ground level bar was great for the football. The downstairs bar we found to be a bit dark and dingy but happy hour and the decent music made up for it.

A good place for a drink and a quick bite

By Pigeonherder |

Best part is there are multiple floors, so you can find a spot you like best. The food is good, not superb, but very acceptable. Good location.

Watered down beer - really!

By cle s |

Went there for happy hour a couple weeks ago. I always see people there, looks like a fun place with great vibe. Cheap happy hour specials, so finally I go. I haven't had watered down beer since college. It's pretty gross! My date's cocktail was also watered down or just hardly had any alcohol. I'm not looking for a strong drink necessarily, but this was unacceptable.

Perfect for late night

By LA1289 |

Black Sheep Pub has a terrific atmosphere, friendly service, and a wonderful late-night menu. Cheese-steak spring rolls are a great starter, and the hamburgers, juicy and flavorful, are always a treat. For years, we have considered the fries to be the best in the city, and our most recent visit confirmed this opinion.

Great Euro-style Pub in the city of Brotherly Love

By Joe S |

From classic English/Irish breakfasts on the weekends, good beers and European football (US: Soccer) matches, Black Sheep has you covered. I've ate and drank at the Black Sheep for years as my travels have brought me thru Philadelphia and I don't think I've had a bad experience. Good location, NFL games during football season, small setup (can get noisy) but very good, consistent food will keep bringing me back.

Neighborhood bar and restaurant with character

By CandV79 |

Definitely a "locals" bar with many regulars but the staff were very friendly and welcoming to a new face. We enjoyed a couple of drinks and pleasant conversation with each other and our waitress. The bar had a lot of New England charm.

Great Pub

By CarbonCrystal27 |

Great location. Classic atmosphere. Authentic, good food. Great whiskey pours for low relative cost. The Guinness was a bit too cold (picky, picky). I will return.

Good Pub Grub

By gardentourgirl |

Nice place, including a roaring fireplace. The menu choices were varied and the food very good. Drinks a little pricey but definately worth a visit

Awesome Pub

By Jeff K |

We've been here twice now and both times have been great. Nice selection of craft beers and they know how to pour a proper Guinness! The filet mignon sliders are the best!

Excellent Irish pub fare

By Nancy W |

Loved this little nearly hidden gem! Shepherd's pie and Guinness beef stew were both wonderful!!!

Our center city go-to

By Anywhere_on_the_road |

Right out of the gate - What is in that dipping sauce that they give with the fries? It is ever so good! Yet another solid experience at the Black Sheep. This is a laid back, good time spot. Sure, it is pub grub, but, they do it well. The service is quick, not super fancy, and efficient. The place always seems to be packed and everyone is having a good time. It's that kind of place. Sure, it can get loud, but, that's sorta the scene. While it is a bar, it's not a bad place for families to eat. I had my usual, lamb sliders. I am assuming that they don't hand make the patty on site, but, the bread and caramelized onions more than make up for it. The rest of my party had some form of burgers. They all had the pefect char. The aforementioned fries and dipping sauce were top notch, as always. Great beer selection, to boot. We will be back. We always come back.

Great atmosphere, very local, great food

By Jennifer M |

Had lunch/brunch with family. Cozy atmosphere, great Guinness and friendly staff. Had the filet sliders that were delicious.

Good Food

By CJSPENO |

My wife and I stopped in recently for the first time after visiting office nearby. We were sat upstairs at a cozy table and was served by the bartender. She was very nice and helpful. He food was pretty good. She has Salmon and I had the Gnocchi. Nice cozy pub feel.

Nice place

By CharlyC247 |

The bartenders/waiters here are really friendly! The food is good, especially the small plates and appetizers. They have Chimay on tap which you don't find that often.

Cool little pub

By skeeterplustbone |

Great beer selection but stay for dinner! The cheesesteak egg rolls were fantastic. Good happy hour deals and friendly wait staff. Was busy when we stopped in and the poor bartender was run ragged but he was still super nice

Best burgers and cod fish and draft beer

By Belinda L |

we wandered in after staying downtown and found this cozy, quaint establishment. The staff was nice and very freindly. We enjoyed chatting with them. I ordered the burger with goat cheese and my husband the cod fish along with salads and fries, tarter sauce was excellent. So much food and so good. We washed it down with draft beers. Everything was smooth and and fast. Nice pub Id recommend to anyone!

Fun Comfortable Pub

By RBMSR |

Stopped by with a friend for a couple of drinks. The locals were friendly and welcoming. The bartender was great. Nice old period pub. Reminded me of a typical corner taproom!

Great Local Pub

By L-S_McC |

We were visiting Philadelphia from Scotland, and staying in the Rittenhouse Square area, the Black Sheep Pub quickly became our local. Friendly service, excellent food and a great atmosphere.

Great Irish sports pub!

By Dee Q |

We went for happy hour first and had some of the great appetizers for 5 bucks each the offer from 5 to 7, then a traditional irish meal with corned beef and cabbage for dinner. We met some friend there and really had a ball. They hyave a great selection of beers including Guiness. A great place to have some fun and do some drinking

Great Philly Find!

By lao824 |

This local restaurant & pub exceeded every expectation! Since I was dining alone on a Tuesday evening, I sat upstairs in the smaller restaurant area. However, the pub was full & lively on the main level. The dining area upstairs is cozy & dimly lit, with about 10 tables and a small bar. The service was fast and the food was outstanding. I had the Cafe salad, which had a great combination of soft, creamy goat cheese and sweet red grapes. The kitchen was very generous with the goat cheese, and I could have had the salad for my main course. I also ordered the pulled pork sandwich. You can tell the sauce is not a commercial BBQ sauce - a great mix of spices. My bill, with one glass of wine & tip, was $31! A great value - I will definitely return to The Black Sheep on a future Philly visit.

Happy Hour

By Stewart C |

Good specials on food and drinks. Great wings and hummus apps. Shepherd ‘s pie and fish and chips were awesome. Service was excellent. Low price specials make this a great place for an affordable dinner. Nice dark and woody ambiance. Stopped on in.

The Black Plague

By ForensicPsych |

We went on Thanksgiving Eve 2010 and the hostess and server were the only employees we came in contact with. Both were obnoxious and rude and gave the impression that they were doing us a big favor. The restaurant is very dirty and the menu only includes foods that are loaded with fat and cholesterol. There isn't one item on the menu that could be considered healthy. From what I heard about the place and observed myself, it appears that the people who go there on a regular basis are binge drinkers who generally choose alcohol over food, so they may not be qualified to rate food in the Black Sheep. I wouldn't even return to use the restroom.

Brilliant pub

By Greenie_ok |

We spent many an hour in this brilliant pub on our trip to philly. A great pint of Guiness and the staff are very friendly. I only eat there once , I had a burger, but it was very nice. Great dukebox and a great atmosphere.

Perfect for any occasion!

By kmw278 |

I love Black Sheet for happy hour, weekends and meeting up with friends anytime. They always have local beer on tap and they have a great pub menu. The staff is friendly and the space is really open and functional. Great for watching sports games as well!

Nice little PUB w/ Really good food

Took our nieces here for lunch - we all loved our meals. Server was polite. My husband and I got breakfast and the girls got lunch items - Cool atmosphere Would def go back

Fabulous!

By John P |

I hadn't visited Black Sheep in quite some time. The service was fantastic. Our server was knowledgeable and very friendly. The food was great. The portions were abundant to say the least. I had the fish and chips which were delicious. I couldn't possibly finish the meal. Kudos -- Still going strong!

great little neighborhood bar

By Jsamiches |

I was a tourist to the area, so I do not know much at all about this place. But I can tell you that it has a great selection of beers on tap, it has a very mellow atmosphere and the people working there are attentive and friendly.

Decent eats and great staff

By R H |

Cool staff, put the champions league soccer on for me (despite everyone else in there oblivious and probably annoyed by it). Lamb chops are really good - ~$3/ea - must get at least 3. I got 4 and gnawed each one to the bone

A happy find!

By mjaz |

We were in Philly during a few really bad weather days, and this place was a block from the Radisson Blu hotel, so we decided to try it. What a treat! First of all, the happy hour is great. We got to sample a few appetizers for $5 each, and the drinks were very reasonable. We stayed all evening, because of the rain, and it wasn't terribly crowded, so we didn't feel bad hogging the table. The food was excellent. The mac and cheese is sublime and the garlic fries were extremely unusual. They were long, curly slices (like from a veggie peeler), that had been fried to perfection - they were crispy and chewy at the same time. Do not miss these, whatever you do. The chipotle mayo dipping sauce was superb too.The steak and cheese egg-rolls were also excellent. We will go back next time we are in Philly. We stay in the Rittenhouse area, but this is actually worth the walk or taxi ride.

Brilliant little pub

By Persiggy |

We found this place walking back to our hotel. Really nice unpretentious pub, show sports on tv (but you can ignore the screens) and play rock/country mixed music. The staff were really polite and you are served drinks where you sit so you don't have to get up to go to the bar if you don't have to. Nice atmosphere. If you just want somewhere to relax with a drink and not pay a fortune and not feel you have to dress up, this is perfect.

Authenitic Irish Pub

Our group stopped into the Black Sheep Pub for drinks after dinner. Very charming and authentic old place. A very busy bar scene. I eyeballed the Fish & Chips and the Shepard's Pie as they past me by. I think I'll go there for dinner next time!

Before theater dinner and drinks

By Marlynn F |

We enjoyed our dinner. I had a hamburger and my husband had Shepard pie which he liked. We are upstairs where it was quieter than the happy hour bar scene downstairs

Typical American Bar

By Eleni A |

The food is pretty good but on the second floor the place smells like cooking because of the kitchen window so I got out smelling like all kinds of food.

Vibrant neighborhood pub close to hotels

By Andrew L |

This pub was conveniently close to our hotel. It had a nice neighborhood vibe; darkened atmosphere, packed with a vibrant crowd. We thought the service was quite decent considering how busy this place was, no complaints. The calamari was fresh, fish and chips were basic (good), and the Shepherd's Pie was tasty (opinion from Asian visitor). I fully enjoyed the grilled lamb chops that were perfectly seasoned. We plan on coming back in the future.

Great BEER, Great Food, and Excellent Service: a great place to have a good time!

By GeorgeBo |

My wife and I stopped in to the Black Sheep Pub during the afternoon of our layover in Philly, and the food, beer, and service was excellent. For appetizers, we had the SPRING ROLLS with a zesty dipping sauce. For the main course, she had the mac'n'cheese and a grilled reuben, and she ate it all; she loved it...And I had the filet mignon sliders and fries, and I ate it all; and, again, it was a fine meal. ...And the beer we drank was great, too...My wife had two Guinness' from the tap, and I had four Goose Island Bourbon County Brand Stouts - once again - from the tap...The Goose Island was a 13.8 craft beer, and it was excellent...and on tap...A great way to start off our vacation...We were WALKING back to the Ritz, so we allowed ourselves to have a good time. ...The service and atmosphere was wonderful, made you feel you were in a real European pub. ...We completely enjoyed ourselves and wish we could have spent more time there, but we definitely will sometime in the near future. Simply put, this place is a wonderful place to have oneself a good time.

Loud but very tasty!

By Carolyn D |

Probably you should expect a Philly pub to be noisy for a Friday happy hour before Christmas, and the Black Sheep was! It's a smallish space in a quaint old building near Rittenhouse Square, where we were going for a concert later. We loved looking out the window at the narrow old street and lovely row houses across the way, and the noise didn't stop the three of us from enjoying some tasty shared plates. The Black Sheep sampler has generous portions of different appetizers, the cheese tray includes 4 cheeses and toasted bread, and the Isabella salad is quite enough for three with a subtle but flavorful dressing and large marinated portabella mushrooms. Service was very good and it's a great location if you've got something going in the area.

Fun dinner

By Karen R |

We were looking for a light meal after a long day of sightseeing. Used the Trip Advisor city guide to find a reastaurant near our hotel. Black Sheep Pub was quite good. Both the cod sandwich and tbe fish and chips were lightly battered, fried to a nice crisp and served with slaw and fries. Service was attentive, music was good and the decor is attractive. Nice dinner.

This is a local pub - people seems to know each other. It has a warm feeling, service is great and it started filling up at 5 pm.

Great local pub

By cookpias |

We dropped in at this local pub just a couple of blocks off Rittenhouse Square last week. We were warmly welcomed both times, and even felt like a local by the second. Nice selection of very reasonably priced beers on tap. We ate lunch here one day and the fish and chips and crab cake sandwich were both great.

Tasty British fare

By jandablack |

Very large restaurant with an extensive menu. There are many small rooms so the atmosphere feels more intimate. Very large servings and tasty British style food.

close to Radisson Hotel

By lolalima76 |

a good neighborhood bar with friendly bartenders and waitresses. We ate and drank there twice we we stayed at the Radisson and would reccomend going there.

The man cave

This place looks really cool with the wood work everywhere, dim lighting and cozy. This place was close to our hotel so it worked out well. Remember to mark as helpful if you read this :-)

Comfy place on a cold day

By ldinaschock |

What a great place on a cold day for a nice warm lunch before walking to the Walnut Theater for a matinee! The burgers and salad were so fresh (and filling), service was spot on and fast. My usually picky friend was impressed with the food and atmosphere.

nice pub with a decent basement bar

For a chilly night

By Katherine F |

Great for a winter night, hide in the basement with a beer and some high quality pub food, traditional and a little more upscale, including things like delicious gnocchi and high end sandwiches. The bar tendered are very friendly and it's a great place for a small group event, the managers are a joy to work with.

Cool hangout place

By M W U |

This a classic pub, with all ingredients : good choice of beer, nice interior, and good sevice. All ages, many tv sets, not too loud. A perfect place to relax and have some food. Here is the picture of the bar and a ceasar salad, being a side dish. For the side dish, it is sizable to say the least. Will be back here any time.

Food, beer and service were excellent, Garlic fries were awesome.

comfortable bar with excellent happy hour

By Melissa R |

Black sheep has a nice happy hour menu-try the wings (I asked for them well done) and also the vegetable quesadillas if they are available. The fries are unique and very tasty. I had the shepherd's pie for an entree and it was savory and delicious.

Great local bar.

By TLAV143 |

The Black Sheep has not changed in over 10 years of frequenting this place. The same can't be said for other Irish pubs in the area. We have spent many occasions at the Black Sheep(Saturdays, Sundays, 30th Bday, reminiscing) here, and the drinks are cold, food & drinks always taste great, and it has a warm & cozy feeling. If you just want a place that is fun to be at with really good bar food, then I would highly recommend this pub. You won't be disappointed.

service was good

By dilettanteMB |

Food and drinks were average but the service was very friendly. We came with a very large group and the bartender was helpful, even rearranged tables for us.

Great hidden gem

By fletch312 |

Just outside of Rittenhouse Square, this bar is down the street from the Raddison Blu where we stayed. It is easy to miss with only a small sign, look for the very red front door. We sat by the bar area which has a great atmosphere. They offer wide selection of beers and had some nice choices for entrees. I went with the Shepards Pie and while I wouldn't call it traditional I enjoyed it. Service was great and I would certainly return.

The waiters here were extremely rude and disrespective the moment they found out we were vegetarians. I will never go...

Nice hidden pub

By Tabitha G |

My fiancé and I went here for happy hour with coworkers. This is a nice hidden two floor pub. We had lots of fun and the happy hour prices are great. Staff was very friendly and our drinks came out quickly! I would love to try the food here next time!

Great food and Drinks!

By |

We had the filet sliders and a ruben, very good! Drinks very good and half the price of some other bars. Stopped back 2 more times for drinks. Nice place!

I cannot think of a single reason to come back...

By sipoyapo |

There is nothing special about this place. The food is very average, uneventful. The best thing I had was the Chimay triple white... but, hey, I cannot grant too much merit to the place for that. On the top of that, service was poor... to say the least.

Simply awful

By Cobtree |

For the second time in one evening I chose a bad restaurant. The first as reviewed this evening on tripadvisor, my wife and I walked out and went into this pub expecting at the very least a reasonable pub quality. Big mistake. It was awful. The food was terrible, the service terrible, the place smelled of urine just awful. Enter at your own peril. How can anybody go wrong with Sysco food but, they certainly did!

Slightly dissapointing and overpriced.

By Pilgrimlad |

We were looking forward to a visit here and decided to go on a weekend when it's a lot quieter. The food was average and seemed far too expensive for what you got. Pub food at restaurant prices.

A burger and a beer

By Jeff R |

A pretty decent place to stop in for a $4 Yeungling and a solid burger. The nachos were good too. We chose the Black Sheep due to it's location. It's only a short walk from the Radisson Blue Warwick hotel. I wouldn't say it's anything special but it was convenient, the food was good and the price was right so I'd definitely go back if I find myself in the area again.

Local ManU Bar!

By Adam M |

Great for Manchester United games! Heard that the local support group for ManU gathered here for the games so we decided we'd check it out. First, it was awesome that they opened up early for the game! I mean who doesn't love brunch and a beer. As we walked in we easily grabbed a table with a great view of the biggest tv. Bartender greeted us with food and drink menus immediately and shortly after that, so did the head of the ManU support group. I ordered the grilled pork roll egg and cheese sandwich and loved every last bite of it!! There weren't really any drink specials for the day so the beer was a bit more than expected, but I've read they do offer great specials during the week. There was an upstairs and a downstairs, that sadly enough, I did not have the experience to check out so I will need to go back again! Definitely a great dive-y bar and especially great for the ManU games. If you are a ManU fan or a soccer fan in general, you must check out Black Sheep Pub during a match!

What a great casual pub in center city philadelphia

By Bobwphilly |

A terrific spot for a beer and filet sliders before the game last night. Cool staff, reasonable prices, good beer and scotches. The only reason I don't give this five stars is its already full enough most nights, and greedily, I would hate to see it go from full to overcrowded. But the word of mouth has already taken care of that.

Dinner upstairs

Had the filet Mignon sliders, they were pretty good but the fries we the best part. Service was OK. House wine, just OK.

Hidden Gem

By allisonh379 |

This place is a hidden Gem, There is no sign hanging out front so it's easy to miss. This is right outside rittenhouse, but has normal prices. No $12 drinks here. Happy hour is a definate from 4 to 7 daily with $ 5 small plates. Loved this place visited twice on our long weekend fourth of July trip!

Great

Vacation 2015

Great little boozer full of character and friendly locals and staff, definitely not your generic Irish Pub abroad. Food fantastic, met the owner James who hails from Belfast and he certainly knows how to run and create an interesting pub, also cheers for the pint.

What a find! Cozy Irish Pub in Center City Philadelphia

By bill1766 |

For a lunch with old friends, I picked this place because I like pub food and the location was good for all of us. I arrived first and was immediately captivated. On a cold November day, the place was warm and cozy, brightened by a blazing fireplace. Bare wood floors, just a few tables, big bar with friendly barmaid. My martini was generous and expertly made. When my friends arrived, two of us went with the fish and chips and the third with the bangers and mash. Everything was delicious. and the service as good as can be -- the barmaid, who was also the sole server, was there when we needed her and not when we didn't. Fish and chips is a personal favorite, and I've never had a better presentation than what I got here. I will be back.

I love this place

By Paul&Jan |

My wife and I usually meet up with friends several times a year to go to theatre or concerts in the city...we ALWAYS meet here. Maybe it's because we've been doing it for such a long time, but we feel uber comfortable here. The place has long-time, consistent staffing, which I feel is a good sign of good, consistent management. Mike, the server on the second floor, and Eileen, the hostess...they're both the best. Eileen ALWAYS seems thrilled to see us again...Mike is able to read our minds and bring whatever we may need or want. The food is simple and good. Beer, wine and ciders are reasonable and plenty. Go to this place and have a good time...and if you have theatre or movie tickets, or are going to the Kimmel Center, or someplace else...meet up here. You'll be glad you did.
