Great for breakfast or lunch!

By Donald H |

The menu here s limited but the choices are excellent. Even items like a grilled cheese becomes special with the homemade bread, ham and pesto. All items feature the homemade breads from the burgers to French toast. By the way these folks don't leave anything open for cutting courses. Real maple syrup for your French toast. The side salad includes nice greens, grape tomatoes, cukes, feta, sunflower seeds, and fresh strawberries. The vinaigrette is succulent sweetness. I think you get my point. Try it, you will like it.

Inexpensive breakfast

We enjoy the Bread Box especially after church. It is easy getting a table and the service is good. The deserts are excellent!

Great Lunch

By Ron K |

Stopped in for a late lunch. Expectations were high based on Trip Advisor reports. They were spot on. Excellent food and service. Since it was our first time, they provided us a free cinnamon roll to test their baked products. Very good. All of the entrees were excellent. For our salads we tried their home made citrus type dressing, wonderful. We tried one of their pies - to die for. And we took home homemade bread for the next day's sandwiches at home- very good.

Bread

I love visiting bakeries so this place was on the list to try. They had an impressive assortment of breads to choose from and I ended up with a huge loaf of sourdough. It was $6 for the loaf but fantastic! The place was super clean and you are able to watch the bread being made from the outside window by the entrance. The cashier was very friendly and new pastries were being added to the case which is always nice. It shows freshness is a top priority. I will be back in the future to try some more of their breads.

Awesome Breakfast

By scronk0413 |

From the fresh bread aroma walking in the door, to the excellent cuisine, this place is a winner! We enjoyed the breakfast club and quiche, and one decided to have a burger for breakfast based on the reviews. We were not disappointed. Service was excellent as well. We will go back!

cute, but not much here

Great little hidden away place, but food and menu is so so. Very cute place in a old world style mall. Have to walk to get there.

Daddy/Daughter Date was Perfect- Breakfast Amazing!

By Dave E |

My daughter came in from A&M and I brought her here for a daddy/daughter breakfast date. From the moment we walked we were greeted by Rachel. All smiles and so courteous, we felt like we walked into a family kitchen. The place is warm and inviting, very artsy and super special. The minute you walk in you're greeted by the sight and smell of fresh baked bread...wow! Our server was so nice and we felt as if we've known her forever. I had the special and it was great, wish I could remember the name. My daughter had the breakfast sandwich and she loved it. Our daddy/daughter date was perfect. Of course we walked out with some sweet goodies for later with coffee. I can't wait to surprise my wife with The Bread Box.

Amazing!

Food was delicious, and the service was friendly & excellent! We sat outside with our pup, their patio is shaded and large fan blowing. Very quaint establishment. What was so fun is we watched bread being made from where we say. Ha! I purchased some bread and brownies to go. I have to say I've never seen loaves this large and look so delicious.

First time

By L H |

A group of us visited recently and several had not been here since it was Apple Annie's years ago. It is located in the same spot at The Alley. The inside has been revamped some and was very cheery although there isn't much space to wait to be seated. We were acknowledged initially but took a few minutes for someone to actually come to seat us. We got a lovely table in the back, by the window and were waited on quickly. The menu had a good amount of choices for a late lunch. They offer breakfast menu on one side and lunch on the other with a lunch combo ($10) as one of the offerings which is any two of soup, salad, half sandwich. Our orders were varied (quiche w/salad, half sandwich with soup of the day, soup/salad). Everyone really enjoyed their selections with the side salads being a nice mixed green and good size. The tomato soup was a small cup and very good. The sandwiches were very good as well although the foccacia bread club fell apart before it was finished. On Mondays they offer BOGO on the fresh baked bread (Ie. sourdough, wheat, marble rye, english muffins and ciabatta). The large loafs are $6 and smaller are $3. There is also a small pasty case with cookies, muffins, turnovers etc. The service, food, and environment were all VERY GOOD and we had a delightful time. We'd like to make a return visit in the future.

My favorite San Antonio lunch spot

By JK_SATX |

Everything is fresh and delicious! I absolutely love this place and generally make it a point to have lunch here at least once a month, if not more often. Their Turkey Sandwich is the best. It’s big enough to stretch into 2 meals, but tasty enough you’ll want to eat the whole thing. The specials are always a treat. They have a great loyalty program, as well.

Great place with great food

By Lucille T |

I met a friend at this little restaurant and we both just loved it. It is cozy and the food is delicious. The lunch special included a sandwich, chips, tea and a fairly large cookie. I had the chicken salad sandwich and it was very good. I've tried chicken salad sandwiches at other restaurants all over San Antonio and I must say this one was the best one I've had. Lunch prices are already great and on top of that they will give a military discount. Can't wait to go back!!

Lunch!

By Karla K |

I have been here twice now; once on a Saturday and once during the week. Both times were a nice visit. The food is very fresh made with local sourced produce. The service is friendly. Have birthday cake for dessert-it doesn't have to be your birthday!

Another great place for lunch.

By TexasTravler45 |

Tucked away in 'The alley at Bitter' on Bitters road, my wife suggested we try it for another place for lunch. it is a Bakery where you can purchase breads and pastries, but it also has a large area for lunch. Primarily a ladies lunch spot because of all the shopping, but the food is really good. granted, I was 1 of only 2 males, but I did not care because women are not loud and obnoxious and that meant for a nice environment. The menu is small (and the print is really, really small-my wife had to read me the selections. regardless the food is great, we had the 1/2 sandwich and soup. the ham and cheese sandwich was outstanding and the pea soup was good and the plate was served with delicious potato chips. Man up and take your wife to a great place for lunch.

Fresh, Locally Sourcred Breakfast and Lunch

By teachy9 |

Delicious sandwiches, soups, salads, egg dishes, desserts and BREAD! Sunny, rustic rooms and cheerful service. My only complaint is that every item is huge. Would appreciate some smaller/lighter choices.

Great summer lunch

By TheMongooseIsLoose |

While the limited menu may disappoint some, you can find something to your liking. Had the turkey club and wife had quiche. As you might guess, the bread is quite fresh and tasty. I didn't, and now regret, not grabbing a loaf of bread on display at the check out. Must return.

Love The Sweet Treats!

By ralphh909 |

This is a bakery that opened a little restaurant next to bakery. The restaurant has a small menu for lunch that features some interesting items featuring their bakery items. Some lunch items sounded interesting but we opted for the sweet treats for sale. We ordered oatmeal cookies, cinnamon rolls, English muffins and carrot cake. Yum! Our favorite was the carrot cake. It was really more like a carrot bread but it tasted so good! The muffins were great for breakfast the next day. Maybe next time we'll try the restaurant items. But for sure, we'll pick up some more sweet treats again.

A little gem in Artisan Alley

By kpjimmy |

I am wary in posting a review about this place because I do not want anyone to know about this place! It's just a great place to go eat breakfast or lunch. The entire staff is great and pleasant. It does get busy during the lunch and church times, but it is well worth it's weight in bread! They do supply their bread to other small businesses here in SA so that's another great detail about them. The desserts are also grand! The carrot cake is well known to who knows :D The handpies are so comforting with a cup of tea or coffee. And their daily "birthday cake" is always a marvel to look at.

Avoid the cashier!

By tfac |

My wife and I went to the restaurant and had a wonderful lunch. The food was well prepared, fresh and served in a timely manner. Our waitress, Alicia, did a great job and encouraged us to look at the desserts when we went to pay our tab. At the checkout counter, we viewed the desserts, very nicely arranged and asked about the desserts in the glass display. The cashier, Lenny, is about as abrasive as a coarse grade sandpaper rubbed against your skin. He acted as if we were a real inconvenience in being there and I am assuming he is an owner and or manager. We actually wanted to buy more of the different types of desserts to sample but only selected 2. We will probably go back BUT will avoid Lenny, if possible, and pay our waitress at our table instead, If Lenny is not the owner or manager, he needs to clean up his act and get some instruction on people skills or needs to be let go.

Excellent food and service

By tasciari |

Our son and daughter-in-law suggested this place for breakfast/lunch on our visit. The food was fresh and delicious. We tried the Cuban sandwich, quiche, and turkey blt. All were delicious. We also tried the apple pie and lemon bars. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Exceptional Lunch!!

By VaBeneSRQ |

During a recent San Antonio visit, we stopped at the Bread Box for Sunday lunch! Of my gosh—what a special treat. All the bread is home made and the entrees were simply amazing and huge. I watched dish after dish, including breakfast entrees, come out of the kitchen and I wish, with my mouth watering, I could have tried each! We had the chicken salad and croque madame finished with a piece of the lemon pound cake. Everything was made on premises and was simply delicious. Service was excellent. Not sure breakfast and/or lunch can get any better or any fresher than here. We will certainly go back! If you have not yet tried Bread Box, I highly recommend that you visit—you will be very pleased!

Disappointing Baked Goods

By Mona S |

We stopped by between meals, not to eat but to pick up some of the well-reviewed baked goods. We were quite disappointed with our purchases. The baguette was not at all crusty as French bread should be, having been twist-tied into a plastic sleeve sometime earlier in the day. We thought the taste would make up for the lack of crust, but sadly it did not. It was just plain bread. We also tried a package of the highly-praised house-baked English muffins. They're so saturated with butter you can't touch them without getting greasy hands. Plus, they sizzle and drip into the toaster. Sorry, but I truly like Thomas' better. We may go back for lunch to try the restaurant offerings, but I won't buy their bakery items again.

Loved this little place!

By Linda O |

Loved this little place! The food was excellent and the servers delightful! There was a large party in a separate room having an anniversary party- it looked like lots of fun and a great location. We bought Homemade English muffins on the way out.

This entree might be for a limited time but Everything on the menu is great. So go there. Mama Thuy’s Pho ! OMG!! This Pho is legit Pho Sho. Phoking Phonomenal. Look, I don’t consider myself a pho connoisseur but I have had plenty of pho throughout my life and this was by far the most flavorful pho I’ve ever devoured. Yes, that is right. I devoured it! I am so glad I was isolated because I was a guzzling, slurping, devouring monster with this pho. I am pretty sure my dog was embarrassed to be in the same room with me. The rice noodles were so light. The meat balls and beef delicious and flavorful but seriously, the star of this pho was the broth. It was a silky, rich, almost fatty(the good kind) full flavor that still lingers on my lips as I write this. It was all complimented by the fresh basil, cilantro and just hot enough jalapeño peppers. Finished off with a squeeze of lime and what had to have been a homemade hoisin sauce, this, for me rates as an 11 out of 10. Mama Thuy’s Pho is one louder than others that claim to be the best. Phoget about those guys and get Mama Thuy’s Pho in your belly pronto!

Great brunch/lunch spot!

My wife and I had a great lunch here today! The patty melt was very good. Portion size of burger was just right. Bought some fresh made English muffins for breakfast tomorrow too!

Fun little place tucked away in San Ann

YUM! Can't wait to go back!

By mkh143ek7 |

Found this hidden gem doing a google search of restaurants on my way to an appointment. Didn't have much time and was in and out so quickly. I did order the special for lunch - both the sandwich and the coconut cauliflower curry soup. They were divine! My husband enjoyed his chicken-salad salad and everyone around us were enjoying their tasty looking treats and lunches as well. Chris Q was an excellent server. Everyone there was very attentive and kept our drinks filled. I want to go back NOW!

Super Lunch Spot

By Suzy O |

Great Sandwich, Cool Atmosphere

By chrisesatx |

Great local spot! Got two sandwiches to-go. Very tasty. A tad on the pricey side but the portions were large and I could have easily split my turkey club with my wife. If you are looking for a quaint place with lots of charm and good food this is it. I really look forward to coming back to try breakfast and I REALLY regret not grabbing one of those lemon squares because they looked pretty amazing. If you are facing The Alley development, you will want to park on the left side and then go up the stairs closest to the front and make your way into the Alley and you will see it. Support local businesses folks!!!

Awesome!!!!

By staceybaumhauer |

What a great addition to The Alley on Bitters! This is a great spot! The food is fresh, sourced locally and fabulous!! The service is always friendly and very knowledgeable! The bread and dessert offerings are worth the calories!!!

Much better places to go

By dennisf675 |

Joined 10 friends for lunch. Food was mediocre. Service was POOR. Prices were too high for what we got. They missed charging us for one sandwich, and tracked us down among the nearby shops to ask us to come back to the restaurant to pay for their mistake. Not what I consider good customer service. Will NOT go back here again. Too many other good places to eat that treat us better and give us tastier food.

Goodness you can taste!

By Denise C |

Wonderful lunch that makes you want to come back for your next meal! Had a lovely harvest chicken salad that was flavorful in every bite. We also ordered a bread platter to taste the variety - yum! No need to add butter! Will definitely be back on a regular basis.

Great New Place

By DianaSATX |

Saw a news report on our local station about this new restaurant. Next day was in the area so my husband and I decided to stop and check it out. Glad we did. It is a small restaurant nestled among other small artisan businesses. The decor is a nice balance of brightly painted chairs and tables with stenciling with hand scraped flooring and industrial style lighting. Menu consists of salads, sandwiches, soup and burgers. Also has an extensive fresh bread as well as cakes and pastries. I had the sandwich special which was a grilled pesto, tomato, fontina cheese sandwich on their fresh made toasted bread and spring salad. The salad had a maple pecan vinaigrette, sprinkled with pecans. A perfect blend of sweet and sour. My husband had the 1/2 lb. patty hamburger (cooked to a perfect medium rare) with a bacon marmalade and fresh made kettle chips. Our waitress, Morgan, was very nice and knowledgeable about all the items on the menu. If she wasn't sure about an ingredient, she would find out and return with the answer. Overall a delightful experience. We will be returning soon.

Always outstanding!

This place is awesome! From scratch, and always amazing! My good friend is the pastry chef here too. Her fresh desserts and pastries will DEFINITELY bring you back here for another round!!

Shopping lunch

By Barbjvan |

As name indicates, restaurant features breads. The bakers are also the owners. Husband & I had cup of soup & 1/2 sandwich which came with homemade potato chips. This was a very generous portion; a full sandwich would have been too much. Soup was made with fresh ingredients. Had ham & cheese and a turkey club on toasted sour dough. Instead of mayo they used a homemade pesto. Everything was very good. We sat on their outside patio which was nice. Prices were reasonable. The only thing negative was the service was slow. They also have bakery items that can be purchased.

OMG Good !!!!

By Tom B |

Went for breakfast. Coffee was very good. My wife said her french toast was very good. I had the avocado flatbread. WOW. Absolutely wonderful. Avaocado, grape tomatoes, a sunny side up egg on top and just enough fresh basil to finish it off. It is off the beaten path but we'll worth the trip. The staff does a good job. One little warning though. Don't stand too close to the fresh baked goods counter. You may start too drool!

Great food great service

The Food was really good the service was excellent staff was very friendly I highly recommend this place

Fantastic baked goods!

By Steve S |

You would hope so, considering the name. Maiden voyage so went the combo plate route. 1/2 sandwich & cup of soup. Bread was delicious but wish they offered a choice for the sandwich. One was not offered, but I should have asked. Soup was served WAY TOO HOT! Desserts (Pecan pie cobbler & bread pudding) were outstanding! Will return for breakfast. A welcome addition to the SA dining scene.

Delicious Burger

By Becky Q |

We had brunch-among us the meals were he breakfast club, bread pudding French toast, 2 egg breakfast and the burger. No complaints, the burger was the most raved about. It was a great place to eat, the staff was friendly and helpful, and we all had a great time. I definitely recommend it. We also bought the kolache to go. Yum!

Very quaint and very fun

By PejotaTX |

This is a tea room that offers tea parties. Beautiful decor. We had lunch which was excellent. Food came out hot We didn’t have any of the many, many bakery items but they looked delicious. We arrived at 11:00. By noon it was packed. They do take reservations I recommend it highly.

Great for lunch, breakfast of baked goods

By JB77_68 |

What a wonderful restaurant and bakery -- using the best ingredients. This is now a regular stop for us. Best English muffins!

Pleasant surprise

By evelyn s |

This wonderful place was a pleasant surprise. The food was delicious and the service was a delight. My Cuban sandwich was very tasty with the right amount of mustard and apple butter to have the perfect balance of sweet and salty. The servers were helpful and yet not in your face. We were able to enjoy lunch without being disturbed. You can tell that they used fresh ingredients in their dishes. The bread was homemade.

Freshly baked pastries! Excellent!

By Dave E |

I've eaten here before and the food was great! This time around I purchased a few of their signature pastries to-go. The pastries are made fresh everyday. They go perfect with a hot cup of coffee. I highly recommend The Bread Box.

Wonderfully Eclectic Bakery and Restaurant!

By rbkb2015 |

Honestly, we ate at the Bread Box after discovering a 45 minute wait at a restaurant down the street. The restaurant had great reviews and we decided to give it a chance. While the menu is limited, the quality is phenomenal. When four grown men are sharing bites from their plates, you know the food must be good. It was so good we also ordered desert as well. All I know is that I have a new favorite restaurant.
