The entrance is tucked away in a little alley off of 5th Street (away from the less desirable elements on 5th). The atmosphere and decor is very nice and has a British feel, as it should. We started with the smoked salmon scotch egg and the aubergine croquettes. The scotch was very good and the croquette was good, but if the waiter hadn't told me they were eggplant I wouldn't have known, since I didn't really taste it. I felt though that the starters were overpriced; one scotch egg for $16 that was gone in a couple of bites, and the $14 croquettes which consisted of 3 small pieces. We both opted for pies for our entrees. The shephard's pie was good, especially because it had lamb instead of the usual beef. The seafood was also good, but a little skimpy on the seafood and way too salty. At $27 and $29, a tad overpriced for the portion size. Lastly, shared a chocoloate flourless cake, which was very good. Only thing was that it was different from many other flourless cakes I've had, in that it wasn't extremely rich and dense like those. It still tasted great, just unexpected density. Based on the food, I was going to give a four rating, but factoring in prices dropped it to a three.

We were away from home, wanting a traditional Sunday Lunch type dining experience for Xmas day; The Cavalier delivered desired experience in spades. The food was exquisite, and we probably experienced some of the premier wait staff in San Fran - where they are super attentive, yet you never particularly see them, the don't interrupt nor hover. This is indeed a skill, along with the beautiful decor I'm rating this establishment 5*. The price at $80 pp for 3 courses was steep, but it was Christmas Day and the food was amaze!

We booked The Cavalier for dinner on Christmas Day on the strength of the interesting and pretty reasonable prix-fixe menu. According to the blurb, The Cavalier is a "London-inspired brasserie" - hmmm. From a décor viewpoint it's more akin to a Gentlemen's Club (not to be confused with the more ** cough ** racy clubs this side of the Pond), all Georgian architecture, high ceilings, richly coloured walls covered in prints... just like home :) Actually, given the grandour, it is in fact very cozy and casual. As is the bar, where we adjourned while waiting for out table. They have a decent range of whatever takes your fancy - Mrs SoCal's Pinot hit the spot, as did the California stout. But on to the main event. Seated, a table for two with enough space to keep it personal, but close enough should your fellow dinners be equally amusing (they were), we ordered. We were both intrigued by the sound of the brie and black truffle tart for starters - the thought of cutting through a light, buttery pie crust to reveal a baked brie sounded very tempting... look, I'm all for poetic license, but come on, this was cheese on toast. very nice cheese on very nice toast, with the truffle sandwiched between the two. And yes, that was a huge slab just melting brie, but a tart implies pastry, and that was sorely missing. Still it was good and I like cheese. As were our main courses, chicken with trimmings for the good lady and the baked salmon and scallops for myself. Oh and three decent side portions of veggies for the two of us. To be honest we hadn't really got room for desserts ("Oh, go on then. And can I have an espresso to end?"), but they again were really nice and not too heavy. Also I have to praise the service. The dishes arrived just at the right moment and our servers themselves were unobtrusive and the whole experience un-rushed.The end result was a pleasant evening, excellently prepared and presented food, and good company. We'd definitely eat there again the next time we're in town...

We had brunch here on a Tuesday. There were four of us, ordering 4 different items. To start, the bill, sans alcohol, was about $120.00. Second, the place had a noisy and frenetic feel. Third, the portion sizes were not great. The service was quite above average, though. Very attentive and friendly service was evident. I would consider returning, since the reputation is good. Our experience wasn’t worth the price.

We had a business breakfast meeting here and I was disappointed with the menu. The full breakfast looked good but I wanted a lighter fare. My only choice was the fruit plate (which was good) or yogurt.

I was dining alone on a Sunday for breakfast and decided to stop in to the Cavalier. I found the decor to be fun and cozy but the service was very very slow. I ordered tea to start off with and it took at least 15 minutes before it arrived. I ordered the Shakshuka and although I have never had it before I have to say it was less than great. The eggs are supposed to be baked with peppers and tomato sauce but they looked and felt as if they had been cracked on top of the dish and not baked. This may be how it is typically cooked so take my opinion for what it is worth. I wish I had just had the scones and tea but I went out on a limb and tried something a little less traditional. I have a feeling that I just hit this one on an "off" morning as it just seems to have a great feel to it and I would maybe like to try it again the next time I'm in town to see if something a bit more traditional would be better.

The service is impeccable, food generally excellent and innovative, and the restaurant has a lovely romantic ambience. The manager, Jessica, and our waitress (whose name I regret I didn't get) made our evening (an anniversary) so special. Thanks!

Mothers Day Brunch with wife and daughter was very good with one caveat that took off a star. Arrived for our 11:45 reservation and was told by the hostess our table would be a few minutes and we were welcome to the bar area. No problem, a drink to start the day was just what I wanted. About 15 minutes later the hostess comes into the bar to tell us she received notice that our reservation was cancelled by Open Table and did we still want brunch. Why we would arrive at the restaurant, check in, have a drink then cancel is beyond me but told her there obviously was a mistake. After that was cleared up we sat down to a very good brunch. Earl Grey and honey scone to start followed by breakfast sandwich with fried hen egg, bacon, pepper cress, shallots and dijon, Came with a side of crispy potatoes. The ladies both had the Marlowe burger which was just the right size and came with cheddar, bacon and horseradish aioli. Thrice cooked fries were also tasty. Came home and wrote Open Table a nasty note. Their reply was that THE CAVALIER had cancelled our reservation, not them. Could have dinged them for more than one star but the food was good.

Really nice venue and menu. The food was very well prepared and presented. Staff were really friendly and accommodating.

We just got back from London and wanted more London food and atmosphere and The Cavalier fit the bill. The location is difficult to find with no signage (but it's worth the hunt). From Market walk toward the Bay on 5th, turn left on Jessie and go into the first set of doors on your left. Again, no signage and it doesn't look like the photo on its website. Great cozy atmosphere but it's very loud. This restaurant is VERY pricey so we shared food and EVERYTHING we had was over-the-top amazing. We had the lamb shank pot pie, the roasted beet salad, the pea salad and the pumpkin bread pudding. We also had really great British hard cider. Make sure to exit through Hotel Zetta and look at the art, especially the chandelier made of eyeglasses at the front entry.

Enjoyed the food and service. We had brunch and there were many breakfast and lunch options to choose from. The service was very friendly. Will return again.

We brought our dog and they were very welcoming. The food was creative and the ambiance lovely. Jo-el, the manager, greeted everyone and followed us outside after to thank us for coming and went the extra effort to help us find the Lyft spot. Def recommend.

Cavalier was recommended by a friend, but we were not impressed. The place is crazy loud - the server kept telling me that she could not hear me and I am not the quiet type. Service seemed rushed and tables were jammed super close to each other. Hubby's fish was excellent, but portion was tiny, especially for the price. I had the Cavalier pie, one of the house specialties and found it sorely lacking on many levels. With so many other choices in San Francisco, I'd never go back to Cavalier.

Sought this restaurant out due to the British theme (visiting from Scotland & looking for some home comforts!) sadly underwhelmed by this restaurant. The service by the waiter (chap with ginger beard) was beyond belief. No communication from him - no smile or welcome greeting. The food was relatively ok but our waiter never asked.... The restaurant was extremely cold & when I mentioned this to our waiter he said he would speak to management. After about 20 minutes the waiter said the temperature would be increased, which was a down right lie!!! It transpired the heating was in fact not working & if I had know this before ordering our food then I would have opted to leave. Disappointing start to our holiday here.....

After being warmly greeted by the receptionist when we checked in early for our dinner reservation, we realized the bar was full. But before we could wonder what to do or where to wait, she escorted us to the adjacent hotel's lobby bar and suggested we have a cocktail there. A fine idea, worked out perfectly. Returning for our reservation, we were seated at a small, but nicely located table. Service was prompt, efficient and friendly. Appetizers of brussel sprout chips and aubergine coquettes were delicious. What happened next demonstrates how a great restaurant operates and earns many repeat diners. I reached for a dish in front of me and accidentally knocked the recently served glass of wine to the floor, breaking it and spilling the contents. Within seconds, restaurant staff was cleaning it up, offering me napkins & a small towel for my clothing clean-up, and immediately after, our server appeared with a new glass of wine. I was apologizing profusely and they kept assuring me that no harm was done and everything was back to normal within minutes. Our entrees, grilled salmon for one of us, and a perfectly prepared pork chop for the other, were excellent. And to top it all off, a beautiful plate of colorful roasted carrots was brought to our table 'compliments of the kitchen'. Quite impressive and greatly appreciated. The Cavalier hits all the right notes in a high energy, very attractive setting.

Cool hidden place for breakfast in the city. Was not a scone person until I tried these little gems...soft, fluffy and moist. Bloody Mary was awesome as well with just the right amount of heat. Last but not least were the Pancakes...Man, you guys ain't had no Pancakes like these. These waffles are so good, they're like they come from down South. These buttery mother****ers will melt in your mouth. Be sure to get them with the amaretto and brown butter golden syrup, not the regular maple. The bacon on the breakfast sandwich is better than the side of bacon ordered for the table.

We came for breakfast but arrived a little late and the brunch menu had just been posted, I was sceptical at first, we ate in the bar area roomy light and yet had a bit of a good atmosphere. The food ? Fantastic ! I had the tomato Benedict, loved it tasty clean flavours perfect portion size nicely presented My wife had the shakshuma, she rated it as very very good just the right amount of spice and very very tasty. Staff were great, polite , attentive and helpful Back tomorrow for breakfast and our last meal in San Fransisco

one would imagine that after a meal where things awry and food being terribly delayed a disastrous review would follow. But....alas an error happened but the recourse was unequivocal and overwhelming. They recovered our st valentines romantic soiree impeccably and from front of house to waiter to sommelier to restaurant manager all i can express is gratitude and admiration. The cavalier......class!

Oh my god this is my second time here and it was so freaking good, and proved why I wanted to come back. The food here is just out of this world. Loved the ability to order a bunch of apps and dive in. I came in solo (establishing a judgment free zone here) and ordered the ribeye steak tartare, cream of cauliflower soup and crispy Brussels sprout chips. Damn everything was perfect! Loved the flavors!!!!!! I could have had double orders of everything. Wowza! The restaurant bar area is stunning. Love the upscale pub vibe. Will be back for a third visit for sure!

I went to the Cavalier for breakfast after reading they have great breakfast sandwiches--I will confirm that statement. I also would recommend the breakfast potatoes. The staff was friendly and attentive.

Had dinner here while staying in San Francisco. Food was OK, but not fine dining. Most of the menu is their version of British classics with a twist. The staff were super friendly and it was a relaxing evening.

This is the place to have lunch after shopping, it's behind Westfield Mall. The hamburger is excellent with a beautiful lettuces salad. The menu looks great and they have a beautiful bar. Enjoyed very much

Charming restaurant and great breakfast. We were up early on Sunday and this fare is just what we were craving. I will be back for the brunch.

We had a great breakfast. The pancakes were nice and fluffy. The egg sandwich was delicious. The nice waiter adjusted the items for my kids, but overall very tasty!

We enjoyed our hamburgers here. They were not the latest style of too huge to eat. They were cooked nice & medium and the buns toasted with butter. The crispy Brussel sprout appetizer was excellent. Some other places burn the sprouts, but these were cooked just right. All the staff were super pleasant from the hostess to the waitress to the guys who brought the food and cleared the table. This was a pleasant find.

Well I am not sure what to say about this place. Atmosphere was pretty good. Food was good. Service was adequate. There is just some reason it did not make an impact on me. I don't know what it is. I did not have really anything to complain about but something just was not working. The acoustics in there was pretty bad and since we had a large party made it very difficult. You could really only talk to the couple of people right next to you. I don't want to do a disservice to them for only one visit but I don't know when I will have a chance to go back since I live in Florida. However, I would definitely go back for another try. It was just one of those weird experiences.

The bar was packed with a fun vibe. Good wine selections by the glass and interesting cocktail list. We opted to eat in the dining room as the bar was very loud. The dining room is equally as load, making it difficult to carry on a conversation without shouting. The service was the best we have had in many months. There was a large party being served and it took a little long to get our food. Three different people apologized and kept us up to date on how much longer it would be. Actually it wasn't even that long. We had the burger which was delicious, loved the bun and the fact that when I asked for medium rare I got medium rare not bloody. My husband had the fish and chips, crispy and light. The smashed peas which were served with the fish were great, small pea shoots with a little bit of smashed peas on the bottom. I would come back just for the french fries, hot, crisp on the outside and perfect on the inside. Not sure if there is anywhere that is more quiet, would come back and ask if there is an area that has less noise.

OK food and impersonal service .The English greeter was amazing . I did the english breakfast .It was nothing like a real english breakfast .We ordered a side of crispy potatoes. They came out cold and greasy .We had finished our meal by the time the hot ones came out .The wine list is way overpriced . Not sure we would go back .

We had both lunch and dinner here. Truth be told, lunch was better. I would say though that you'll be paying "hotel prices" for your meal since it's under the same roof as Hotel Zetta. Our meals were not cheap. Service was excellent.

I think this restaurant is one of my favorite because of the quallity of the food and the cool menu. Good for breakfest, lunch and dinner and also as an lounge in “a secret” room that looks live a english/indian pub! Tuna Nicose is delicious!

We found this place on Google maps and decided to try it. Well worth the price. The bone marrow was amazing, as was the shepards pie and fish and chips. Highly recommend.

The Cavalier bills itself as a British cuisine restaurant. There are certainly menu items that fit that bill. I tried some of these. However, there are other fine and unique items on the menu that also cater to healthier cuisine as well. We chose this restaurant because of the above, but also because it was close to our hotel and the Golden Gate Theater where we were seeing a play afterwards. We had early 6 PM reservations but the place was packed already when we arrived. It's quite popular and has a stellar reputation as a "hot spot". We were immediately seated at a back table in one of the front side rooms. Our server was very attentive and helpful with our menu questions. We decided on a combination of vegetable sides and typical "british" pub items. I ordered the Shepherd's Pie (suggested by the server) and sautéed mushrooms as an appetizer. My wife ordered the mixed greens, cauliflower side, along with Brussel sprouts and carrots (she's so healthy!). I was curious about the shepherd's pie since I recently had a similar item when visiting England last month or so. My wife's cauliflower entrée was HUGE, including Brussel sprouts. While my shepherd's pie was good, I think I've had enough of that pub entrée. My sautéed mushrooms were ok, but the presentation was not what one would typically think of for that item. By that I mean, the mushrooms sat on a bread/toast like bed and smothered with a creamy white sauce. It was a little too fancy for my taste. We also ordered two glasses of wine: one being a Mt. Veeder Cabernet that was really good! We did not order dessert because we had no room for dessert after the main meal, and we were headed directly to a play. All in all, we would recommend this restaurant and return (but order something different for me). My wife LOVED the vegetables!! Our server was excellent and also reminded me that I had almost forgot my credit card upon leaving!!!

Conveniently located next to Hotel Zetta which is literally a few steps away from Westfield Shopping Center. Opens at 7AM for breakfast. Ordered their famous buttermilk pancakes (with liquor syrup). It was good, but after two slices I got kind of bored with the taste and could not make it finish. At fourteen dollars, and coffee and OJ for additional four and five dollars respectively, your total bill including gratuity can quickly run up close to thirty dollars. Super Duper, a fast food restaurant, is a few blocks away, which also serves breakfast, for about a third of the prices here. But this is a full service restaurant with a waiter mentioning his name at the beginning of the service. Whichever you prefer.

We went to The Cavalier on a Saturday early evening after going to the Ballet and we were excited to try something new. We were a few minutes early for our reservation but seated right away. The people who were seated next to us after we sat down had their orders taken and drinks before we were acknowledged by our waitress. The music was so loud you could not talk at the table and I actually asked if it could be turned down a little. We went simple and ordered the burger, they were not cooked all the way thru and had no real flavor. We tried the Brussel sprouts The wines by the glass list was extremely limited and the one chardonnay that they were pouring was nearly $20 per glass. I know SF is expensive I work here and eat out every day, but this seemed a bit limiting. Overall impression is that they are attached to a hotel and rely on the tourist business and are unconcerned about return customers. Disappointed as there are several other locations owned by this group that I was looking forward to trying and am now disinclined to do so anytime soon.

This hotel and restaurant are perfect location if you are headed to the theater or staying in the city for a business near Union Square. Today we had drinks and brunch before heading to SHN theater. Fantastic English breakfast! The Earl Grey scones are lovely as a starter for the table. I would say they don’t have very strong or distinct Earl Grey flavor. The clotted cream that comes with them is wonderful. Delicious, true English breakfast - toast, eggs, sausage, bacon and tomatoes roughly cost $22-$26. I wish it came with beans. The bar is a lot of fun and they have some great cocktails. This is a perfect spot for after work as well. Delicious bloody Mary’s and mimosas. The bartenders give great care to making cocktails. We typically have very friendly service and they are quite attentive. Parking: hotel or fifth and mission garage

This is our second time around in The Cavalier, the full dinner menu did not disappoint. I opted for the Ribeye which was very tasty and well cooked medium but not warm when served, the chips (fries) where again very tasty but not warm enough and the sauce was over seasoned (too salty). A shame because the menu was good and the quality of the food was also good but let down by some poor touches and execution. Service was generally good although we had to wait a while for drinks and my desert arrived rather late. Ambiance was good, bar scene was good. Not at the level of fine dining although the prices are bordering on expensive.

Great food and service on our last night in San Francisco. We had the deviled eggs and grape arugula appetizers. Both were delicious. The grape arugula salad maybe a little over salted but otherwise tasty. We then had the lamb mixed grill, fish and chips and burger with the gnocchi as a side. All very good. I would say the gnocchi may not be worth the $20 price as a side but it was tasty. We end with the citrus brûlée. We thought it would be a citrus flavoured crème brûlée but was 3 slices of citrus with brûléed sugar on it with some toasted crumbs next to it. Odd but tasty. I wouldn’t repeat the desert but all else was good.

We were 30 people in The inner Room. Nice restaurant. Good food and good service. The chicken was very good. So was The wine. Good pinot noir.

I host a dinner every year for some very powerful people in my industry and rely on the recommendations of a fellow foodie who travels more than I do. The Cavalier was one of four in San Francisco on his list, and am I glad I chose this one! All 12 guests came away sated and happy, saying it was one of the best meals they'd ever had in Frisco. My dinner of lamb scrumpets, delicious pork chop and "Lemon Mess" was outstanding. Our lone guest from London proclaimed it a fantastic representative of her country! There were several things I wanted to try, so I will be sure to dine there next time I'm in town -- and more than once. The service for our large group was pleasant and attentive, and the final bill was quite reasonable. I wish they'd open a branch in NYC!

We had dinner on a Friday night and The Cavalier was jammed with a deafening noise level. We were seated in a side room which was a bit quieter. The décor is a bit ersatz "pubby" for my taste but nothing offensive. We had very good service and good recommendations -- brussel sprout chips, baked oysters, fish and chips and Shepard's pie. Not a foodie meal but solid dishes. Its sister restaurant Marlowe gets higher marks in my mind.

Loved the dark, upscale modern British restaurant. Really enjoyed the ambiance here. We came as a group for dinner and split a bunch of items. The deviled eggs were super tasty. The pot pie I had was really great as well and the burger was also a hit. It is solidly good and everyone walked away really happy with the meal. Good cocktails!

Ate here on Saturday night after my wife and I finished a 50 mile run and we wanted to celebrate with friends and family. Delicious solid upscale pub food and the cocktails were incredible. Fun vibe and our server made the night perfect.

In need of a good dinner, The Cavalier is connected to Hotel Zetta and the very attentive staff make sure you feel right at home, ice water was on the table immediately and drinks served shortly after. The menu was nice and simple, and the classics immediatly jumped out. Succulent battered fish pieces and fresh fries were a perfect dinner.

It's certainly not your typical pub grub, well not whetherspoons or O'Neils like and of course that's a good thing! We went here for dinner (party of 2) and it was certainly pleasant. The brussel sprout chips were new to me, I'll definitely be trying to make them at home :) It was a fairly busy evening but that didn't affect the attention of our waiter as he was quick to refill glasses and checked on us an appropriate number of times. We actually asked to move to the corner booth like table as the table that sat down beside us were quite heavy on the perfume, enough to make us want to move... the staff were understanding, asked no questions as to why and had us reseated momentarily. I don't think the food is exceptional given the options and quality you can get in SF, but it was definitely good, somewhere I'd be happy to eat but I think I prefer it as a drinking venue- the ambience just seems more appropriate for my taste.

Positives. Place is nicely finished with good ambiance. The breakfast menu is limited. We attended thinking english breakfast but the menu is much more contemporary and not a "full english" type of place. It has scone and cream, pancakes and sandwiches. Only 6 or 7 choices and no sausages if i didnt mention it! It is pricey. 14 dollars for pancakes is not a cheap eat, they were fine though. The best value is probably the scone and cream at 6dollars. The

Had dinner here with several colleagues; the food was delicious and plentiful. Great flavour and well cooked. Would go back again!

I had a lovely smoked salmon on avocado toast with spring greens. I chose a Northern California Withers Rose in the style of Provence Bandol. Great location right behind the Westfield Mall where I was going to the movies. Next I headed to Blue Bottle Coffee by the old Mint across the street for my dessert of a saffron snickerdoodle which they brought back for their fifteenth anniversary.

9:00 PM dinner after Alec Baldwin. While very crowded and noisy we won’t hesitate to return. Quail Eggs, Baked Oysters, classic Marlowe Burger for husband and Steak Tartare for me with Panna Cotta for dessert. Lovely! But really the service was just outstanding, some of the best in SF. Bravo/va!

Recently returned to The Cavalier, having not been there for quite a while. Relatively calm and quiet early on a Sunday evening, a very different vibe from midweek. Three of us enjoyed excellent service, unusual and delicious appetizers (quail eggs on a celery root bed, plus an arugula date/burrata cheese salad), and really great entrée dishes (scallops, roasted chicken, hamburger). The strawberry rhubarb cobbler for a shared dessert topped off a perfect meal. The décor of this restaurant is terrific, and the servers are all professional and knowledgeable. Reception staff is warm & welcoming.

Really well-made British cuisine is hard to find in Northern California, but this is the exception. The restaurant has decor reminiscent of Great Britain and the food is excellent. We had the chips( French fries) that are double fried and as crispy on the outside as you could wish for. We had them with a server containing the most delicious, just like Sunday dinner in England, bone marrow gravy. The appetizer of stuffed quail eggs were scrumptious. Everything was really perfectly seasoned and we enjoyed every bite! If you are a Brit and want to try some food from home in San Francisco, go! If you just want to try some great cuisine..go!

I had a lovely brunch with my friends there. The prices are a bit high but nothing super surprising for the neighbourhood. Service and food were good, the place has a nice touch.

We were able to get a seat at the bar (last 2 seats) on Christmas night. We had excellent service from the bartenders and a fantastic dinner! We shared the Salmon, wild mushroom soup, and garlic mashed potatoes. We also ordered dessert - pecan brownie, which was delicious! This was all from the special Christmas dinner menu. Definitely would return!

This was our second dining experience in the last several months. We were last there in December. We have dinner there before going to the SHN theater plays. This time we ordered different entrees and purposely avoided the standard "British" fare. I ordered the "Sunday Roast Chicken" and my wife had the "Pan Seared Salmon". We shared the "cucumber and radish salad" (we highly recommend it). The salmon entrée was very good and my chicken was good as well. Be forewarned that the chicken comes with "skin on". We also ordered Brussel sprouts as an accompaniment. My wife had the Brussel sprouts last time and really loved them. However, this time the side dish was prepared differently (read not the same and not as good) as the last time. Not sure why that was though. We even asked our server if they were indeed Brussel sprouts and she reconfirmed. That said, this side dish was very big and can be shared with one or two other persons. This time we did order dessert (the sticky toffee pudding). It was superb!! Again, we highly recommend it. Our server, Sarah, was also superb and extremely proactive and helpful. She even helped me with my Lyft app! This time, we also took in the ambience and enjoyed the wall décor and decorations more. Also, be be aware that if you go on a Friday or Saturday evening, the noise will be at its maximum. The noise volume is very high with music, conversations, and those annoying metal chair noises when moved around. we would return again and certainly recommend it to others as well. As we mentioned in our first review, the restaurant is conveniently located to the Golden Gate Theater and the large Westfield Shopping Center (right next door).

We went here for drinks on a date night before dinner. The drinks were good, classic cocktails, nothing too unusual or fancy. Ambiance us great and the service was fine, nothing special. The food is good, but not very vegetarian friendly. There are so many other great restaurants in SF, I would stick to the cavalier's drinks and eat elsewhere.

Our company went to the Cavalier for dinner last evening. We tried a lot of different things. The brussel sprout chips appetizer and the coconut ice cream with coffee meringue were some of my favorites

The cavalier bar tender was amazing, making great craft cocktail and helping us choose from their english centric menu. We had the bone marrow bones. Outstanding different dish which is rarely on a bar menu. Steak tartare was also excellent. the beef dripping chips were french fries with dipping au jus. Amazing. There is also a raw bar with local oysters and smoked dungeness crab. Will Definitely be back

The Cavalier tweaks traditional British home cooking eg shepherds pie, to a more upmarket restaurant experience. The menu had good options for both carnivores and vegetarians. Dishes were generous and well cooked, with quality ingredients, without being outstanding fine dining. The room was comfortable and noise level allowed normal conversation, while the adjacent bar is noisy. The restaurant is unnecessarily dark though with many patrons having to resort to the torches on their phones to read the menu. The waiter was not familiar with the wine list, and the wine was not well-handled, with sediment in the glass. The restaurant is in a good location near Union Square and Westfield.

Went her for lunch recently and thought it was fabulous. Started with roasted brussel sprouts -- a la Marlowe for those of you who know that great restaurant, too (same owners) -- and then a wonderful chicken sandwich for my friend and caprese sandwich for me, Sounds banal but was just the opposite. Wonderful server, beautiful bar, great concept of British gastro-pub. Will go for dinner next time!

This restaurant was next to our hotel we popped in for lunch. It was a pleasant surprise a bit on the pricey side but good selection. It was definitely better than the establishments in our hotel. Food was very tasty. Almost gourmet English if that is possible.

I had expected this to be more like a British pub that a classy restaurant but it was still a great experience. The staff were very efficient and welcoming, the food choice was good (it takes more than serving fish and chips to make it a British pub) and it was, in fact, one of the nicest fish and chips I have ever had - and probably the most expensive. There was an excellent wine list but, frankly, it was more expensive that Mortons (where we ate the following night) and I felt a little over priced. I would go back, I know I would enjoy it and I would recommend it - but be prepared to dig deep in your wallet.

We went for dinner as a group of friends. We were first seated in the back room and there was a large group there. It was really hard to head each other so we asked to be moved. They set us up in the front by the door on a smaller table but it was far better than the back. The service was impeccable and the staff was great. We all thought that the food was a bit too salty, but we had an excellent evening nonetheless. Portions are on the larger side.

We were visiting SF as a family group and reserved a table at Cavalier for Thanksgiving, after stressing that we included a four-year-old and being assured we were all welcome. We followed up with a telephone call about the four-year-old and what might be available for him to eat and were specifically told that there was a "children's a la cart menu" from which food which four-year-olds eat might be ordered. There was no children's menu. We finally asked for bread and butter for the four-year-old because there was nothing in the prix fixe appetizers remotely suitable for a young child. No one had anything to suggest about the four-year-old's "main" course, either, although upon cross-examination it was revealed that a plate of french fries could be obtained. In all fairness, it was a busy Thanksgiving evening. But also in all fairness, we should have been told the truth when we reserved: that the restaurant, while connected with a hotel, was not in the business of feeding children their Thanksgiving dinner. Moreover when we got there, and it was abundantly clear that we had a child who needed to be fed, no effort was made to rectify the situation. The staff was pleasant enough, and the food was fine, although nothing to write home about, and all in all, NOT worth the $1000 bill for six adults (in addition to the set menu, we had two bottles of wine far from the top of the list). Maybe we'll try again when the four-year-old is grown.

This is the Pension restaurant where we were staying, and on sight of the friendly menu we decided to dine there. The food was delicious, the staff very friendly but unfortunately the plates were very expensive , for what little there was to eat inside. We got murdered on the Award and ended up eating chips and cookies in the room!

Had the most fantastic brunch here in September. The atmosphere was good, service was faultless, the drinks were great, and the food was incredible. We shared the Hens Egg Hollandaise with ham and cheese soldiers, which I could quite literally eat every morning for the rest of my life, and then we both had the Shakshuka, which was a real surprise. Slightly spicy, quite rich, and quite unusual. I drank mimosas which were great, and my girlfriend had the Bloody Mary which was exceptional. We're admittedly big fans of breakfast food but we're still talking about this meal weeks later. Can't recommend it highly enough.

This was around the corner from our hotel, I loved the way this Brasserie was decorated and service was excellent. My husband and I tried the deviled eggs, which were the best I have ever had. It looked as amazing as it tasted! We had the steak with chimichurri sauce and lemon asparagus. This was a spectacular meal and not overfilling. Leaves room for dessert! Highly recommend!

This is a restaurant associated with a boutique hotel. To close out our weekend jaunt to San Francisco, our group of ten and a friend's son-in-law with his 16 month-old daughter met for brunch here, just a block from our own hotel. There is no brunch buffet, which is just fine. The dishes are all a bit exotic in finish and presentation, which is a draw. I had the smoked salmon and avocado spread on a slice of toast. My wife had the frittata. Both dishes were delicious. One person enjoyed the shakshuka. Everyone seemed very pleased with their selections, and the staff was very attentive. Upon leaving, I noticed the crowd consisted mostly of young urbanites, probably enjoying their weekend break from the high tech pressure cooker in Silicon Valley. A hipster crowd.

The restaurant was next to the hotel we were staying at. It was packed solid when we checked in which is always a good sign. Made reservations where we manged to jag 1 6:15pm seating. Ordered the steak and asked for medium and got some medium and some well done. The steak that was done at medium temp wasn't that great. Mike our waiter was typically 1st rate however our drinks server let me know in no uncertain terms she wasn't happy to either be serving drinks and working in a restaurant. Good wine/beer list. But is on the pricey side.

I was taken to lunch for my birthday, and the ambiance is that of a Scottish pub. Plaid walls, pictures everywhere, the service was exceptional. I had fish 'n chips with a stout on tap and it was delicious. I was particularly impressed with the Manager, who was straightening out photos that went crooked, and when we left, he was sweeping the entrance!

We had the fish and chips. The fish itself was tasteless (actually it was probably just on the turn as every now and then I had a slight taste of ammonia in my throat). I only found out the reason when I got back and looked it up on the internet otherwise I would have sent it back! I have fish and chips every week back home and have had some brilliant meals in Hermosa Beach but never anything like this. That cannot be a good sign for their kitchen if the fish is off (what else don't they check on?). The batter it was coated in was extremely tasteless. In fact I don't know how they could make batter taste of nothing. Lots of salt didn't help either. Quite probably the worst fish and chips I've had anywhere. And it was expensive so value for money was very low. On the upside the minted pea salad was very tasty and the service and ambience were both good. However the food really was unacceptable at any price - certainly not at the prices here. Wine is also terrifically expensive; more New York fine dining restaurant prices. Impossible to recommend except to avoid.

I was staying at Hotel Zetta right next door and had dinner here on my first night. The food was excellent and the service was just great! The wine and cocktail list offer a good variety. The restaurant also offers a good breakfast.

Wanted a quick glass of wine before meeting Mrs. Sothoth for dinner. Bright and modern place, decent selection of wines by the glass, bar staff friendly and attentive. Good choice in an area that can turn sketchy, quickly.

The Cavalier is in the Hotel Zetta so, whenever there is a conference in town (like when I visited), it’s bound to be busy. Owned by the same group as Marlowe and Petit Marlowe, we had high expectations coming here - and I have to admit that Cavalier did not disappoint. A few elements to touch on: 1) the bar had a nice ambiance but it was LOUD. 2) food was absolutely excellent. Our party of 4 started by sharing a dozen oysters, shrimp cocktail and bone marrow. The whole wheat house bread was also fantastic. I only sampled the shrimp which was very good. As an entree, I had the spring vegetable curry which was excellent. 3) service was a bit inconsistent. Gabriel the host was a clear standout who took ownership in making sure our party was sorted. Our server Patrick was too condescending for my liking - and the others in my party had the same reaction. In summary, I enjoyed the meal but wasn’t wowed by the overall performance. Not sure if I would return on my next trip to the Bay Area.

Overall, a disappointing experience, though not on account of the food. The menu was engaging (pic attached), the meals were good, and the service fast and efficient, though it did get noticeably off-hand and mechanical towards the end of the meal. Only two criticisms. There was way too much salt on the crispy Brussels sprout chips and the fish and chips - fries for any Americans reading this - were badly let down by the chips. They were not even close to the real thing: thin instead of chunky, and missing the glassy crunch outside over fluffy inside that makes triple-cooked fries such a joy to eat. If you've never had them, check out Heston Blumenthal's recipe to see what you've been missing. So 4 stars for the food. As for the experience, if my idea of social interaction was half-shouting to be heard over the din - which was considerable at times - then I'd have given the place 5 stars. But it's not, and it is beyond me why restauranteurs believe excessive noise and good food go together. They do not, and never have. So 2 stars for the experience. We will not be going back, though I would happily recommend the Cavalier to people who do not mind bellowing at each other as they eat.

Located next to our favorite hotel Zetta serves excellent food in their bar/dinning room as well as room service for Hotel Zetta. Cant go wrong at this centrally located favorite. Excellent Breakfast too

Vacationing with another couple and decided to try this place out. Very poor service and think the food is over priced for what we had. There are better places in the area. Will not go back.

We came for dinner. The food is solid, even though the fish and chips were average at best. The problem is the host stand is too indifferent and our server was soooo unfriendly as to be unprecedented. I also just don't like seeing a tax to cover employee well being. It's admirable to provide insurance, but don't put some arbitrary tax on the bill, one that I read doesn't typically entirely go to the employee! Add it to your prices. Honestly, I'd rather pay $21 for a $20 dish than see a 4.5% tax next to two other taxes. I'd like to try this place for breakfast yet there are too many options for me to consider before returning to such an unwelcoming place. Too bad.

Nice ambiance, food was decent however the service was so horrible. The waiter took Forever to take our order. I think he was so busy that he left our food at the counter because by the time it got to me it was cold and I had to send it back ! We were trying to make an 11pm show and got there at 9pm. We asked for the check several times and finally had to ask the bus boy to bring our check. When we tried to pay he was no where to be found and had to get up and chase down the manager to take our payment so we can make our show. This is really the one of the worst service ever. They should hire more servers because it's truly a shame. The table next to is a group of 8 also had to wait around and were not happy either !

I ordered the roast chicken, which was organic, corn fed and came freshly cooked to perfection with crunchie green vegetables (sugar snap and asparagus)

Go to this place! You will not be disappointed! The service is spot on and the food was amazing. The earl grey scones with elderberry jam were the best brunch item I have ever eaten. The drinks were strong and the vibe is very cool.

Amazing food! The flavors were amazing. Definitely my favorite dinner. The salmon, scallops and dessert. Would recommend. It is small portions but worth splurging.

We landed here at 6.30pm where we were to meet another family for dinner. I had expected them to make a reservation but when we got in they hadn't. The place was full to the brim. Amazing atmosphere btw. I asked if there was anyway they could accommodate a group of 7. The guy at the desk jumped into action and said he would have it sorted in 15 minutes. He did indeed. He had cleared a space and put tables together for us all to sit and dine. The food was great. The service was on point and the general feeling of the place was great. Maybe not an ideal place for young kids but nevertheless they made us all welcome and assisted with menu choice for the little ones as there is no kids menu. 10/10 from me.

I stopped here for a quick "snack" before meeting up with friends, who were arriving in the city later. The service was impeccable and efficient. When I explained that I didn't want a huge meal, they suggested a half-order of the pancakes - excellent recommendation! The pancakes were cooked to perfection, slightly crispy around the edges, perfect temperature and consistency throughout. Additional bonus - the warm maple syrup, infused with Amaretto liqueur. The pear mimosa was also delicious. Not too sweet, just light and refreshing. I look forward to returning with friends and conquering more items on the menu!

We had the fish and chips - very good. It's a nice place but extremely loud. There were 3 of us and we had a hard time hearing each other, had to yell, but good service and good food.

Warm greeting at the door, attentive, likable and informative waitress, Traditional English/Equestrian inspired decor, high ceilings, lower volume contemporary music,New American and Traditional English brasserie menu ( was tempted to try the Welsh Rarebit Soufflé-maybe next visit). I was there about 1:30 so the lunch rush was over, range of other people dining were of varied age groups. I ordered the Cavalier Salad-the aged goat cheese was too pungent for my taste, however the salad dressing with truffle vinaigrette was refreshing. I also ordered the "Marlow Burger" with the caramelized onions and horseradish aioli to compare it with the burger served at their sister property "Park Tavern" it was equally as juicy and delicious, it was served with fresh French fries (a bit salty) but crispy-I also had a classic Bloody Mary with my meal which was perfect with my burger. This pricy lunch spot was a treat and I will go back for a special occasion event, I may want to try going for breakfast as the morning menu appears to be interesting and hardy.

Wonderful friendly staffs in a beautiful setting. I had a lovely breakfast with poached eggs on sourdough and avocado. Simply and done to perfection! Must try again for dinner or drinks as I can they have a good collection of gin and whisky.

This cozy restaurant offered a great dinner to our family for Thanksgiving. The food was fantastic and the staff was friendly. We had a great round top table that allowed us see everyone in our large party. They also were great with our kids and offered them a side kid friendly option that wasn't part of the menu. Aside from the price, which was astronomical, we really enjoyed ourselves.

I took my mom for brunch to The Cavalier for Mother's Day and it was perfect! The atmosphere is good and the food was delicious!! We started with a mimosa (OJ with prosecco) and we ordered french toast (special dish of the day) and the most lovely Hen Egg Hollandaise with ham and cheese soldiers, one word: WOW!

Arrived just before midnight. Main bar was closing but we were taken down to a cosey back room bar where we had cocktails. Drinks were mid-range prices, decor was intimate. Would highly recommend, especially if you are staying local such as at the Zetta.

Bartenders were super friendly and mixed a serious cocktail. Helped us out with plans around town. Very friendly

We found a good brunch a little difficult to find in this area of SF. I found this place through Yelp. It has a great old school vibe. Loved the Champagne cocktail. The best thing was the Hen's egg sandwich starter with hollandaise sauce. Amazing. We went back twice. The second morning, we walked out of a restaurant just because this food was so good. Both our waiters were lovely and fun.

We were staying at Hotel Zetta and rarely choose to eat in a hotel’s adjacent restaurant. However the menu at The Cavalier was interesting and the reviews great. Breakfast included items like home made granola, Greek yogurt, mixed berries and spiced apples or frattata with wild mushrooms, goats cheese and spinach, or honey scones with elderflower jelly and clotted cream. All incredible! Dinner included fish and chips with minted peas in a vinigerette. The fish was melt-in-the mouth delicious and the peas so different and tasty. My family had the burger and the chicken, all equally great. The ambience is casual and cosmopolitan. Well worth a visit.

Great selection of drinks at this place and excellent atmosphere ! I didn't try the food, but the menu selection seem pretty decent !

I loved this place! It's hard to really do something different, especially when it comes to comfort food and pub grub, but this place really kicked it up a notch-- super creative and super yum! I got the Hen Egg and Hollandaise - I'm actually not sure I saw egg in there, but it was like a super crunchy grilled cheese with dipping sauce. We also got the Brussels sprout chips, which were fun and simple and the Beef Dripping Chips, which were a new take on wet fries. The fries were extra crisp and the gravy, rich. My friend got the Foraged Greens and Leeks pie, which was easily the best dish of the nice. Really savory and filling. The olive oil cake was also delicious! Highly recommend. My friend also went for brunch and loved it.

Flew in from out if state for SF Halloween fun. Had a later evening reso for dinner after going to the Terror Vault across the street. Service was friendly, bar table area very quaint. Had cocktails and wine and we shared the fish and chips and pork chop, upon recommendation. All was very delicious! We would dine here again!

Food, wine and beer excellent but expensive. Staff were friendly and efficient. The atmosphere is very good. It manages the bar and restaurant areas very well

We had Saturday morning breakfast at the Cavalier. We sat in the bar; it was very warm and cosy with and well decorated. Period prints on the wall and very comfortable green leather seating. The only disappointment was we were there at 9:30 and the waiter didn't tell us that a full brunch menu was available at 10. We would have waited to order as the breakfast menu was a little limited. Regardless, the food was hot, well cooked and delicious. Staff was very nice and attentive. Recommended.

I had breakfast at the restaurant and the service was great. Staff was friendly and the food came quickly. The food was good but nothing that stood out, but the decor of the restaurant and the large windows looking out to the hustling streets of SF was nice.

Enjoyed a few meals and various night caps here and every experience was top notch- well done guys !!

Great restaurant. We made a booking using the online service which was very easy. Food and cocktails were fantastic. The British decor was fun and overall the place had a wonderful and intimate atmosphere.

Went in at 11 am to check out the ambiance & menu for dinner later that evening , so the menu would have to meet my limited dietary needs as well as that of my husband, who is a very selective eater. However, once I walked in I decided to stay for lunch. Even though I was seated at a small windowside table across from the empty bar,the atmosphere felt very classy. I don't consider myself to have an extremely discerning palate but I do appreciate food, so when I ordered the roasted chicken breast (with grilled sugar snap peas, hen of the woods mushrooms & asparagus), I assumed it would be basically just that. (I also requested that olive oil be substituted for any butter). Being an out of towner $24 seemed a bit steep for lunch, but I was hungry & was a little desperate for a basic meal within my boundaries. The staff were unobtrusive & attentive, which I appreciated because I had brought good book. The background music from the adjoining room was a loud & annoying, so I was glad that I hadn't been seated there.I was told there would be a 20 min wait for my food since it was not premade. I was happy to wait & read. They brought me a tiny quail egg as recompense for the wait. It was beautifully situated on a plate within a circle of herbs. It was tasty & hit the spot !.My order arrived attractively arranged on the plate. After the first bite, the word basic seemed woefully inadequate! I've Never experienced chicken & asparagus & snow peas that way. It was simply delightful. I savored every bite So my conclusion: Service:A+ Staff attentiveness:A+ Quality of food: A+ Presentation of food: A+ Restaurant Decor: A+ Restaurant ambiance: C food so good requires music that compliments t& enhances the experience, so for me the music choice & volume did a disservice to the food & if I were with company i would prefer not to have to have my attention divided between my companion & my food

We dropped in her on Saturday on our way to the theatre. The brunch was very good because not only was every course delicious but they all had a twist. The scone with early grey jelly was fantastic but we had six different dishes and every one was excellent. The seating on comfortable leather banquettes was great and the fact that they had Hobgoblin and Old Speckled Hen beer was awesome. We loved this experience and will definitely go back

We dined here two out of three nights during the Memorial Day weekend while staying at Hotel Zetta. My 11-year-old twin sons were able to easily find something on the menu, as was my 82-year-old father. Our awesome server, Christopher, recommended the avocado with the crab, and my dad commented on how well they paired together. One son got the fish and chips, the other got the Cavalier pie. Fish and chips were nicely battered (not too heavy), and the fries were good (not too oily with a nice soft center). The Cavalier pie got very rave reviews! He enjoyed dipping a side of fries in it, as also recommended by Christopher. I had the cucumber and radish salad, which was very light and very yummy. The second night, only one son went with me. This time, he had the ribeye and I had the Cavalier salad. Both were divine. Ribeye cooked to the perfect temperature (med rare), and the truffled dressing and goat cheese were perfect. We also were given a complimentary brussels sprout chips after a little snafu, and were delighted with the gesture, as they were delicious (and I normally hate brussels sprouts!) The atmosphere is richly pub-like, in that it is nicely refined, but also has fun music playing. It isn't stuffy, and my sons felt quite comfortable there. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I would have liked more variety for those that cannot eat shellfish (me) and don't fancy salmon or lamb. Otherwise, I was very pleased. Definitely excited that they had Hangar 1 Buddha's Hand available (my fave), and also tried the Gamay beaujolais the second night. That was delicious! Christopher is a great server, and we will definitely return to both the hotel and restaurant the next time we see the Giants!

Ok salmon plate; the most pricey breakfast plate featured 5 items that all tasted the same. Eggs overcooked. Good service. Kind staff. Not recommend for a group. Ambiance old English. Nice bar area.

I work nearby and have visited for several years. Food is always good but the level of sophistication of the bartenders dropped a level with the leaving of Scott and another regular bartender. The current bartenders are clearly not as skilled and its clearly noticeable to regulars.

Served up a fantastic hamburger, perfectly cooked and paired with excellent bloody marys. Offer a wide range of options all day, looked very good for dinner as well.

Best English fish and chips. It's crispy and the pea salad on the side is delicious too. Salmon is excellent too. The desert we had the strawberry which was not as impressive compare to the entree and Brussels spouts chips.

This was an informal business dinner prior to a major conference in San Francisco. All three participants had flown from Europe and we wanted something simple but good. We certainly found it at the Cavalier. All three meals were well presented and were well received, the wine was a good red from a wide choice and the service everything that could be expected.

I had dinner here with a friend and split the burger, which they were very happy to do. The burger was excellent. One of the top burgers in the city at a reasonable price! The staff were very friendly although we did feel like we were being rushed out at the end. Would definitely go back

We were on our way out to dinner, but stopped in at the Cavalier for happy hour. The bar staff were excellent, and the happy hour menu, while pricey, was well considered. Red Speckled Hen (a beer) was on tap! which is a rarity. Oysters were fresh. The room was lively. Good experience all around.

Met a friend for dinner here and was worried I wouldn't find enough vegetarian options when I heard it was an English-style brasserie. Turns out the roasted cauliflower steaks on wilted spinach and the minted pea salad with pea shoots and snap peas was awesome!! The rest of the menu is kind of eclectic... quail egg shooters, anyone? The wine list was interesting with lots of French and international options and the wait staff was super friendly. The decor is filled with clubby British charm. Dark woods and deep reds and greens help make the soaring ceilings feel a little more cozy, and the bar looks like a cool place to have a drink.

I went for a lunch and the servers were very efficient and pleasant - but not overbearing. The food is good but not outstanding - and my dining companion had a nice sandwich but the fries looked like they were pre-cut out of a packet. I had roasted chicken breast - which was very well presented and tasted good. The place has a somewhat cold feel with a blue decor and high ceilings one end being dining and the other end more of a 'pub' casual feel. I think I will try the place again as the menu looked good and I really like the sister restaurant Marlowe.

This was our second time dining here, the first time, was just my husband and myself and we loved it, we had great service and the food was fabulous, so we decided to share this spot for our holiday gathering with our friends on Saturday. Wow what can I say, what a difference in the service, maybe it was because it was so crowded, but if you want a snobby waiter and sommelier who tastes your wine prior to serving without even telling you, well, I guess $25.00 per bottle must be worth it, I totally understand that this is the protocol for bottle service, but the way she told us after the fact was quite rude indeed, I have to say, this is a award winning restaurant but on this night it didn't feel like it, I wouldn't recommend this establishment to a friend, but the sad thing is, is that I don't have too, because it wouldn't matter, it will still be packed, because we have just come to expect that if you choose to dine in SF, this is what you pay for.

Christmas in San Francisco was sure to be fabulous anyway, but the icing on the cake was definitely the food and cocktails at the Cavalier. Every course was incredible and the wine pairing was inspired. We will be back next time we are in San Francisco!

I give a place five stars not always to the place that has the most amazing food, but the place that has very good food, great service, and is just pleasant to linger in. And The Cavalier is just that. The food was quite good, but what was really nice is that the service was top notch and the place was really comfortable so that we enjoyed having a leisurely lunch. It's dining vs. eating!

Need better wait staff. Manager that night was terrific. But the waiter we had was .. well actually insulted the birthday guest. We still tipped 25% on a $300.00 bit when 50% was alcohol as we had dinner reservations elsewhere and just ordered "snacks". Food? Meh. Don't bother going to Marianne. The speakeasy that's part of the restaurant. The manager there, well, hell wouldn't unfreeze that face.

The service is impeccable. The food is very nicely done. The menu is not overly adventurous, but solid.

My husband and I sat at the bar and were treated royally by the 2 bartenders. We had the Lamb Scrumpets (amazing!) the Cavalier salad (perfect for those that love truffles), the Scotch Egg (yummy and fun), and the Quail Eggs. Everything was delicious and the sauces that went with everything were inspired. We can't wait to go back.

Was just my (teenage) children and I for Thanksgiving this year. Rather than cooking for 3, I thought I’d let someone else cook and treat us to eating out. Found The Cavalier on line with their yummy looking Prix Fixe menu and they did not disappoint, even at $85 per person. There was more food than we could eat and all of it was very good. Add impeccable service and we now have a lovely Thanksgiving Day memory.

We came at 3 pm, so no lunch menu was offered. The hamburgers were expensive at $12. This is a very pricey restaurant; full dinner would cost at $50/person, plus parking. Most of the customers were having cocktails and pub food.

Place is in a cool hotel and has nice atmosphere and decor. Food was very good, I was somehow maybe expecting a little more. Good wine list but a lot of very expensive choices compared to more moderate priced bottles for an informal dinner. Staff were professional and attentive. One of our party was disappointed with their burger. The ribeye, shepherds pie and fish and chips were all good but not as much of a wow factor as hoped.

the cavalier is modeled after a californiua cuisine english pub and the food is lovely and the portions rather large. the service was excellent and warm. the timing worked and all the food came at one time. the desserts were fabulous. we just found it a bit noisy for normal conversation and that was a detriment to our otherwise very delicious and enjoyable dinner

Seriously I have never tasted Salmon to be this good. I had the salmon at the Cavelier Restaurant next to the Zette hotel and I would absolutely go back anytime I'm in town just for this meal. It was exquisite!! And Lorenzo the bartender made me the best delicious and refreshing drinks.

Otherwise it was a perfect dinner. The host was wonderful and so were all the servers. The decor (other than the disturbing animal heads) was lovely and the food was pretty and tasty.

We had a large group of individuals in the rail car, food was served family style. We did not have any large eaters at our table, but only one flake of cod, about a 2" piece of steak, and one minor piece of chicken left when the entrees reached me. Luckily, there was plenty of salad so I ate some more of that. Desserts were brought; strawberry rhubarb cobbler was good but two tiny dishes for a table of 10? We had to pay our own bar bills the way it was set up; I felt like $109 per person for ten bites of mediocre food was a bit pricey, even for San Francisco. Maybe going to the restaurant in small groups would prove better?

I decided to go, against my better judgment, to Cavalier for their Thanksgiving feast. Yes, don’t remind me that holiday meals are usually a big rip-off. However, I’ve been here before and thought that there are far better restaurants for the price. While I was hoping for the best, my thoughts haven’t changed. Let’s not dwell on the rather average over-priced feast (the best dish was the Foie Gras Torchon, after that it was all downhill). Since feasts happen only a few times a year, let’s dwell on the aspects that occur every day. The restaurant has four distinct eating areas. The quietest is the far back room and could be intimate if it weren’t for the closely spaced tables. The side room tends to be rather noisy and somewhat generic. The nicely appointed room adjacent to the bar area is not all that noisy and the best tables are in one of the three corners. Sometimes it has tablecloths and sometimes not. Regardless, at about 9 PM the adjacent bar cranks up the music destroying whatever ambiance the room has. The wine list is relatively expensive for what you get and prices have risen 20% since the last web update. Mind you, the web site gets updated but necessarily the prices. So, who knows what the prices will be when you visit; but they definitely won’t go down. The enticing glass list is mediocre, and I’m being overly kind here -- I've had better equivalent wine from Trader Joe's. Service is regimented. Your server is only responsible for taking your order and delivering the check. All other aspects are computer controlled. The bar is responsible for delivering your drink and the kitchen your food. While efficient it completely eviscerates any kind of connection you might have established with your server. I guess they are taking the cold stiff upper-lipped British stereotype to heart – the cuisine is British focused after all. Whatever, it leads to very uneven service. Finally, the restaurant charges the “we don’t want to pay for employee health care so you should” mandatory surcharge of 6% -- one of the highest in the city. I didn’t know that health care was proportional to what you order but it must be by their reckoning. Cavalier used to be excellent when they opened in 2013. Now it seems they take every opportunity to gouge their customers. Take it from a local, it’s just not worth going here.

LOVE LOVE LOVED IT We went to this cozy British pub 3 times during our 4 day stay in San Fran! That should tell you something! They have a variety of great snacks and great refreshing summer drinks! We loved everything about this placed their dinner experience was also fantastic! Our Fav drink was the Pimms Cup! The best we ever had! a Must visit

My friend and I came to this place for brunch. the food is decent and the service was great! The restaurant is a good size so it felt cozy and could be a cool place to hang out in the evening if it's open.

We had two really great meals here, the staff were really friendly, the burgers where tasty, but the favourite was the meringue mess dessert, which my daughter had both nights face booking pictures of it.

I just had my third visit to Cavalier. I consistently almost miss this restaurant when I walk by, but it's always buzzing on the inside; full, lively, talkative. There is dining room on one side and a bar on the other side. It's a nice spot for just cocktails and shared plates or for dinner with a unique wine. For me, the atmosphere is more attractive than the food. The appetizers are decent but expensive for the portions. There are vegetarian options but their specialities are meat-first plates. If you want a huge meat meal, I recommend the pork chop; huge, buttery, cooked to perfection. The bone marrow appetizer is delicious. For vegetarians, I recommend the leek pie.

We went for a business lunch but had some drinks before....(white lady). The place is not very big and the decor is really interesting. We all ordered something different but the burger (which is a signature dish) was delicious and perfectly cooked. Desserts were OK tho. Staff was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Highly recommended.

We came here for an early Holiday dinner following a show, and while one gentlemen at the bar was extremely gracious in accommodating us at the bar with my elderly mother, the woman behind the bar couldn't have been more annoyed and rude if she tried. Then once seated for dinner our waiter basically had to take all the tables in the restaurant with hardly any help, so our meals came at different times and most of them were sub par. He did a lot to make up for it, but mediocre food is what you can expect and skip the crab salad. It was the last thing served and was barely edible - and it's crab season so it should have been spectacular. My advice is to go for drinks but skip eating there. And, heaven forbid anyone is your party has any kind of handicap, the way they treated my elderly mother shows that the staff needs some serious ADA training.

Lively, busy, fun atmosphere...which means that you may not get a table without reservations. Since I was staying at the hotel next door, I slipped onto a bar stool two evenings...once for a quick dinner (yummy cucumber and feta salad plus crispy brussels chips!) and once for late night dessert and after dinner drink. The food was good, but the convivial mood around the bar was due in large part to a team of excellent bar tenders that kept things moving and paid attention. Definitely worth a visit!!

Food was overpriced and nothing special Hotel restaurant so thought we'd try it Entrees are the size and price of main meals which we found odd.

My husband and I love this place and have been several times. The food is always good and has some good English staples on the menu and lovely cocktails. The staff here are lovely too, and always go the extra mile to accommodate you wherever possible. Also, check out the speakeasy cocktail lounge out the back if you out for the night...they do a great martini!

Eaten here a couple of times - once on a girls night out and once with my family. It is a little quirky, but the food is really good and we had great service. Planning our next trip here for Christmas dinner.

Frittata was good and the buttermilk pancakes were also great. The servers all have an attitude. I tipped but I did not feel like it. Not very friendly or welcoming at all. I asked a server for a little milk for my coffee and he shook his head and them attempted to correct me by saying "do you mean for your coffee". I just wanted a little milk, whatever. So the entire experience was servers eye rolling and with that "resting attitude face". If you can overlook that, the food is good. I asked for fresh orange juice and they said they had none, then 20 minutes later the table across from me had orange juice.

As a Brit I was thrilled to see my culture represented on the SF Chronicle top 100 restaurants list for the first time ever. I nipped in for a pint and just had the Scotch eggs (something my Mum used to make as a summer salad treat) and the novelty was worth it. Duck eggs wrapped in duck meat (as opposed to the norm of chicken eggs wrapped in sausage meat, for those not familiar). I've since been back a couple of times for dinner to entertain (impress?) new friends and each time the meal was up to Top 100 standard. No doubt I'll go again. Informed service, beers change, no complaints at all.

So, what happens when you decide to dash out for brunch and end up at the Cavalier? You taste EVERYTHING on the menu and then take a Lyft home. The perfect spot for any Union Square or South of Market visitor; the Cavalier is an "in the know" spot for tech giants and locals that is welcoming to all. Slide into a sexy banquet and prepare to stay for a while. I have dined here for lunch and dinner, always walking back to to the office, or taking a service home; on this occasion I did not count on loving the Bloody Mary's and sparkling wine so much; so I left the car at the Moscone for the duration and decided to taste as much as I wanted. Delicious brunch - engaging service, and a real people watcher place.

A very disappointing entree spoiled an otherwise splendid evening. The butternut squash soup was creatively designed and tasted special. My companion's pork chop looked spectacular and was reported the same. But I had the hamburger. It seemed as though it was part of a children's menu, better than a Denny's burger but not by all that much. And it did remind me of the "Where's the beef?" slogan. Really, for me it was a deal-breaker to eat at a restaurant of this quality failing to make the effort to do better. Burgers are not haute cuisine but they can still be well made. This restaurant failed. If I ordered a different entree, perhaps the review would be entirely different.

We were intrigued based on staying at Hotel Zetta but quickly learned this spot is not ideal for children. Their regular menus look fantastic but had to order from the brunch menu... For all of our tastes, outside of Mimosas we were not impressed with the menu options.

Visited for thanksgiving dinner this year - our first experience of thanksgiving as we are from the UK. The quality of the food was good, portion sizes were hearty but not over generous (great for a multi course meal). Service was a little haphazard with starter orders not going in and an issue with the wrong dessert but these were rectified swiftly and we just chalked it up to it being an extremely busy day. Would certainly go back if we found ourselves in SF again.

Went for the first time to the Cavalier, and there were some good points and some problems. The interior is quite nice with comfortable seating and a nice bar area. Once we were seated service was initially quick and friendly. I started with smoked chicken broth and while the broth was smoky and delicious, the turnips, carrots and potatoes were about 30 minutes from being being soft enough to really absorb the broth. Cindi had shrimp and grits, and the shrimp were head on huge with a good flavor, but the grits were a little coarse and not the smooth consistency one is looking for. She had the salmon for a main and it was fine, the nicest portion being the grilled avocado. I was originally going to have the lamb shank but they were out, kind of surprising as we sat down at 5:30. I ended up having the grilled pork chop which was cooked wonderfully and was a nice portion. The brussel sprouts were flavorful and the star of the dish. The problems we encountered was that the time between the starters and the main courses the age of dinosaurs could have risen and fallen. Another peeve of mine was that they charge $8 for bread and butter. I could have withstood the glacial pace of service if I wasn't having to munch on bread at $2 a slice. Like most dining in the City you are cheek by jowl with diners on either side of you. While we were on our starters, 3 couples were seated to our right, and their philosophy was that if something needed to be said, it should be said LOUDLY. It was so bad, we couldn't even look at the dessert menu.

Visited The Cavalier on New Year's Eve. We got there at around 5pm and got seats at the bar. We didn't make any reservations for dinner. We ordered a hot toddy and a gin and tonic. They were not serving any food until 5:30pm that day. We weren't sure if we'd stick around and eat dinner at the bar but before we knew it, it was already 5:30pm. After checking out the menu, we decided to order a white salad. Pretty tasty. We will probably come back for more drinks than food though.

We ate here twice as we were staying in the next door Hotel Zetta, and it was very easy to just walk through the adjoining door to book and eat here. Good selections of courses many to large to finish such as Ribeye, boat of prawns An extensive wine list as well.

Very festive atmosphere for an early NYE dinner. It was a 3 course prix fixe menu with wine pairings. I chose the mushroom soup, sole, and key lime pie and found everything to taste great. The staff were all friendly, professional, and attentive. I had fun and would go back again.

The Cavalier is an old-style place, with hunting trophies on the walls, interesting cocktails, and outstanding fish and chips--the best so far. The chicken was also very good. BUT the noise level is off-putting.

Pros - excellent service and good wine selection Cons- music was too loud, food was incredibly over- salted (even by restaurant standards), presentation of food was sloppy and under whelming. For the price you pay, we expected more. Carlos, our server and the other wait staff went out of their way to make our experience pleasant and comfortable. Well done to them!

This place is fine. But masquerading as an English bar/restaurant is simply farcical. Food is good, one of my American friends was looking forward to “The English” and was really disappointed that there was no black pudding with his breakfast. So, to summarise, hard to fault anything. But don’t expect the English experience. I’m an Irishman - by the way!

Good service, good food, nice ambiance. Extensive wine menu. Went with a large business party and everyone seemed to enjoy their meals. Had the Sunday Chicken and tasted the Ribeye; both were good choices.

We came here in a hurry - I am on my way to the airport (in a fairly nice T-shirt and non-blue jeans that is decisively the lowest end of the dress code here if that). That is not the way to dine here; the place deserves your respect: your time and your attire. Even though we ate a hurried single course meal, it was a good experience. They made the food right: taste, texture, temperature, presentation, composition came together in both our meals (but especially the chicken that tasted like my grandma's...) I recommend you spend your time here and eat and drink through a full meal over couple of hours - while I have not done it, I feel the urge to go back to have the full experience. Oh: service was impeccable and the place is classy without being burdensomely over-sophisticated. Prices are reasonable.

Two well thought through whiskey drinks in menu form, turned into quite sweet and lacking alcohol. I'd suggest sticking to wine maybe.

The Cavalier is a gorgeous restaurant located in/next to Hotel Zetta. Interior and food is British inspired and so well done. Breakfast menu is really good, as well as the tea selection. Try the Breakfast Sandwich!

We met friends here for cocktails and bar food and had a very pleasant experience. The bar tenders really know their stuff and steered us in the right direction for quality glasses of wine and beer. The Brussel sprout chips and French fries (or chips as they are know in the UK) with aioli dip were super yummy. The atmosphere is upbeat and overall the venue is very fun!

I stayed at the Zetta Hotel and they serve breakfast at The Cavalier. So I went there and had an goat cheese omelet with green salad and a coffee. The food was very tasty and the whole restaurant had a nice decor! The seat was uncomfortable though and the waiter wouldn‘t be worse off if he put a smile on.

Meals and aperitif super, happy hour Top atmosphere, we ended with a delicious meal, excellent food. Refined, to be redone

Do not miss this amazing restaurant! In a city filled with amazing food, The Cavalier is special! Potted Dungeness crab Brussels sprout chips Crispy squash blossoms Beef dripping chips

If you're looking for somewhere special to eat or a romantic place to spend with your other half then come here! Classic decor, great service adn a traditional menu. It has a feel of a gentleman's club in London (the posh kind not the ones with dance poles!). You are looked after well here in a formal dining setting but without all the pomp and ceremony!

I have been here before, but not in a year or so. On our previous visit we were seated in a different room. On this visit, we were in the first nook right after check-in. It was a little noisy - as there was a group of ten or so seated at a large table, but upon their exit, the sound level dropped. Our server was very good, asking each of her tables if they had a show to attend that night and confirming the desired exit time from he restaurant. We need to be gone by 7:30pm to make our 8pm curtain. So, she paced everything just right to get us on our way. We skipped appetizers as my spouse was headed for the Marlowe burger. I went with the lamb shank with the chosen side of minted pea salad. The shank was fork-tender and delicious. The minted pea salad was a bit difficult to eat, but tasty. For a beverage I had the Royal G&T, which was huge, but I had no trouble finishing it. ;-) For dessert we split the Sticky Toffee Pudding (because, how can you not?) along with some coffees. Quite the enjoyable meal before we hoofed it over to Golden Gate Theater for our show. If you like British fare, this is a solid choice.

Sweet Resturant. Welcoming was professional and quick. food was very good . I recommend the heirloom beet salad when u test the creativity of the mix and pan seared scallops plus the Angus ribeye when the carrots meets the mushrooms over a beautiful piece of meet .

This place is really good - whether you sit at the bar or eat at a table. Nice team here. Good food options - not too many and very fresh. I had dinner, breakfast and happy hour. YOU must try the brussel sprouts! really amazing...

Got there early for our dinner reservation so went to the bar for a cocktail. Rikki was charming, entertaining and very helpful. Drinks were generous pours. They have a wide selection of suggested cocktails along with a vast array of beverages to choose from. Seating is intimate even at the bar. There were seven of us for dinner and we got seated early for dinner. Most of us had the burger and they were truly delicious. Staff was proficient and professional. Seating was comfortable and they even increased the size of the table so we would have more room. Maitre d' was friendly and helpful in getting our table ready. I noted it as mid-range for pricing but that is because it is San Francisco. Elsewhere it would be fine dining pricing. Definitely a nice place to return to when back in the city by the bay.

I order room service from here while staying at hotel Zetta. Food was good BUT i could had done a lot better for the money in downtown san fransisco

Not a good value. Ordered for takeout the blackened salmon. $28 for the smallest piece of salmon and a half cup of squash. 4 stars for taste, 2 stars for value. Many other choices in San Fran, I will take my business elsewhere next time I am hungry.

Stayed at the hotel and dined here for lunch and dinner at the bar. Bartenders are the right blend of competence of friendliness with a dash of personality (and they have great hearing). Sandwiches and fries were great. Fish and chips, I find, is hard to get right. Most times, the fish ends up undercooked. At the Cavalier, the batter was that perfect light crispy texture, but, alas, greasy. I was visiting, but if I lived in SF, this would probably be one of my regular business restaurants because the menu is suitable for a variety of diets and the staff are very attentive without being stiff or overbearing.
British inspired food
I have had several meals here and was extremely satisfied each time. The fish and chips are delicious and if you feel adventurous try the Scotch Egg!
