Gotta love the Cove

By KGarySF |

A great local spot for some easy comfort food. The service here rocks...all of the staff are super friendly and fun to chat with even if you're eating alone. The Cove has good standard breakfast as well as some nice lunch and dinner items. Nothing fancy but good food and good people for sure.

a place for good food and to feel loved

By Thomas M |

Certain events leading up to the trip had me a bit down. Choosing a lunch at the Cove helped make those feelings go away and replaced with love. Getting time to visit with Solange & Maurice adds to the awesome. I do my best to eat quite a few meals there during my trip at different times of the day- the food & service never disappoint. in fact on some items ti's gotten better.

Timeless gem

By Jon H |

Comfort food served in light, spacious restaurant where you can hear yourself think. Staff are friendly and helpful. Decor is as it was back in the day.

Great place!

By BARBBURY |

The Cove is a gem! Solange and her staff are so friendly! And, the food is delicious and reasonably priced! A must!

How can a simple waffle get screwed up?

By steve h |

It had been a while since I'd had a meal here and it was always basic, decent comfort food. On a recent visit, however, a had a different experience with an order of a waffle and coffee. The waffle came under-baked, mushy in the middle, and an unappetizing beige color. The bill for both was $15.

Great value & friendly service

By Jeremy |

I have eaten at Cove Cafe when visiting San Francisco for years. Really good cafe for breakfast and brunch, very friendly service and more than likely you will get chatting to a few of the customers as well.

Busy for brunch

By Peterinl0nd0n |

We got here just before the rush on a Saturday morning. It is a busy cafe right on the castro street strip opposite the theatre. It was fast friendly service and the food was good. I think the staff can be a bit stretched when it is busy so I would time your visit but would happily return here again.

One of my favourite American diners

By HV-London |

...not that I have tried that many of them. On every visit to the Cove we have enjoyed great (and usually playful, friendly) service and brilliantly good brunches. Try it if you are in the area.

Good non chain food

By Stegosaurus |

Found the Cove after a nice walk around the Castro, back here in the UK we would call it a "Greasy spoon" type cafe and its just what we wanted. Good basic food from breakfast to dinners. the service style is unique and for the most part very freindly with the staff talking to you as though you just saw them last week. The food was of a good standard with fair sized portions, the only problem we had was on our second visit the server either misheard my order or made some other error and brought me a different item from what i wanted. I didnt wish to cause a fuss so ate most of it and it was still good Nice location, not glitzy and in your face, good value, very good community spirit with between the staff and would definatly go back on another visit to San Francisco

Fab benedict

By j8rda |

Had the Irish benedict - poached eggs with proper corned beef and hash browns etc. Absolutely delicious, hearty portions and reasonably priced.

great breakfast spot.

By SammyM68 |

Per my norm I will start off by dying Cove Cafe is in the heart of the Castro.. So if you are homophobic or prejudice then don't come here. Now if your mind is not limited and you want a great breakfast spot this is for you. Small Cafe with great food and service.

Good food, fun atmosphere in the Castro

By kady_elle |

Yum! Diner atmosphere & food in the Castro district, with cute gay waiters and host. Sister & I split a burger, potato skins were de-lish, Mom got their lasagne special. Good stuff, and our least expensive meal in SF, including breakfast! Good beers, too. Would go here again!

Great breakfast and brunch

By Hubs_Howlett |

Good old fashioned dinner, great service (even if you happen to get on Saturday or Sunday lunch peak hours). The Benedicts are perfect (we tried the corned beef benedicts and the smoked trout - both just right) and their mash are usually great too.

Perfect Place For a Meal or a Snack Before a Film

By maxbialy |

If you happen to find yourself IN the Castro and ON Castro, you will want to duck into the Cove Cafe, a restaurant full of history on mounted screens, with food that's always delicious and reasonable. Big helpings as well. Breakfast offers many different style Benedicts, and all the rest is standard fare, but well prepared and tasty. The evening specials are also very good, especially the meat loaf and the fried chicken plate. Across the street is the famous Castro Movie Palace. I always stop into The Cove before or after a movie for the perfect San Francisco treat.

Maybe breakfast

By Terrence M |

Went for dinner. Very disappointing food. The service was ok . The food arrived in record quick time , but I feel they are over priced for the quality received. Maybe they are good for breakfast items but the dinner food just didnt make the cut. Mediocre fries, slightly salty veges, and the chicken fried steak just had the OVERWHELMING flavour of nutmeg !!! of all things. Again the service was friendly but the food just didnt match that level.

Love The Atmosphere

By CarrieV816 |

We stopped in before a show at The Castro Theater on a Saturday. I had the most delicious goat cheese grilled sandwich ever! Wait staff were super sweet! I am sure the place could get packed fast but enjoyed the calm before the storm. Stop by if you happen to be in the area :)

Rude and condescending

By TheMorzy |

Unfortunately, I have to agree with some of the previous reviewers who pointed out how incredibly rude and condescending the staff of this cafe is. While at first it seems like a authentic little cafe, it quickly changes when the owner (a lady called Solange) approaches you. First, after ordering an omelette (which was not cheap), I was berated for not ordering a drink. Then, when I took a sip of my girlfriend's tea, she yelled: "drinks cannot be shared". I almost thought she was joking, but her aggressive expression demonstrated that she was dead serious. Then, when I ate a small biscuit while waiting for the omelette, the atmosphere quickly deteriorated even further and the owner started yelling that no-one has the right to eat a biscuit even after having ordered a full meal. I have never seen a place where the staff yells and screams at clients who just placed an order of almost $20. Given that the place was half-empty, it seems that the popularity of this cafe is waning, and for good reason! There are enough friendly cafes elsewhere in this neighborhood.

Great Menu

By gregtrue |

Lunch with Cove Burger with Brie and glazed onions. Most excellent was the Tomato Bisque Soup. 1/2 carafe of house wine. Very fast and friendly service. Right in The Castro.

No help from the waiter

By mjts25 |

Visiting San Francisco for the first time we really thought seeing the pictures that the Cove advertised while eating dinner would be a great way to immerse ourselves in the history of the Castro. We were disappointed that one of the TV's was showing Monday night football, one was showing an old movie (I think but it was too far away to tell) and the other was showing pictures of a recent Folsom Fair probably. Not much old, historic and interesting to see so we were disappointed. As we have some dietary restrictions we tried to get the waiter to help us and his comment when asked what was better the Moroccan Chicken or the Egyptian Koshary was that "he didn't eat vegetarian" so therefore he could help us. No suggestion. No opinion. That was it. We heard him give the same tired phrase to another table right after ours. That should have been an indication of what to expect but his service was bad the rest of the evening and so was his attitude. The food however was okay but nothing special. So overall the evening was a real disappointment.

Superb service

By Karen A |

We stopped in Cove on the recommendation of a man in town who was handing out brochures about Castro. Our lunch was delicious and the service was welcoming and friendly. I had a grilled goat cheese sandwich which was on sour dough bread accompanied by homemade tomato soup. It had a unique flavor with just the right balance of cheese and veggies. My daughter had a grilled cheese and my son had a beef sandwich. The great food was only surpassed by the outstanding service. Definitely worth visiting if you are in the area.

Comfort Zone

By Ben Whatman |

The Cove Cafe is my new favourite place to eat in San Francisco. When I’m here I feel part of a family, everyone is so lovely, attentive and caring. I love how the staff interact with all the locals, and welcome new comers. The Cove displays a rich sense of history, and community. I must say I have had the best Mac and Cheese ever, here. Amazing home cooking, classic American comfort food served with love. I truly bonded with the staff here and will look forward to seeing them when I’m return. I am envious of people who live in this district who get to visit The Cove often.

Tasty Lunch in the Castro

By Kay W |

We walked into another place down the street that seemed totally uninterested in serving three strangers. The Cove, by contrast, was welcoming and had excellent brunch and lunch offerings, including some creative eggs Benedict variations. Portions are large, so I ended up giving my side salad to our son. The produce is very fresh, and the bacon was perfect.

Wow. I'm impressed.

By Scott |

I had not eaten in 20 years. But I am glad that I did so tonight. Ribs and Fries, tonight's special, were excellent. Dinner salad was perfect. Service was great and food came out fast.

Mega YUMMY

By Sabine WvL |

Perfect start to a day in the Castro. Relaxed atmosphere, very friendly staff, fantastic breakfast. The coffee was delicious - tea is not so great.

Right across from Castro Theatre

By WorldTravla7 |

I came during the week for brunch whilst in the Castro area. The vibe was friendly and relaxed, the service was fast and efficient and the food was ok (a bit too All-American for my tastes but that's no reflection on the quality). What I liked most was the view of the Castro theatre directly across the road and I love that they show LGBT historical videos in the cafe. It's a great place to people watch as well. Kudos to the owners for being community minded and running such a great place.

Love the Cove

By Mischelle M |

Best soups in San Francisco. Warm and friendly staff. Food is consistently good. Be sure to try the Irish Soda Bread.

A nice vegetable curry at the end of a long day

By Miknamrok |

A cozy little cafe, open til 9pm. I stopped for dinner before returning to my room, prompt service, reasonable prices, a nice veggie curry over brown rice, and many other home style dinners.

nice place

By Barney M |

we wanted to walkthe castro and get a cup of coffee and we stopped here. it was nice and the staff was great

Best eggs benedict ever and best service ever

By John V |

I can’t praise the level of service and smiles you get when you visit this place. The staff is amazing the eggs benedict are the best I ever had.

Good value good feed

By Colin T |

A nice unassuming place in the Castro with friendly staff and quick attentive service. An old fashioned type of decor not a trendy hipster looking place but very clean and comfortable. Club sandwich with fries and burger with fries ordered really good portions if not too big. Nice and fresh with a good amount of salad garnish with burger perfect for me to put on the burger (personal preference, I do like salad, tomato & onion on my burger). The patties could be a little more seasoned but tomato sauce helped out a lot there.

Amazing lunch with friends

By Tyson C |

OMG this place was so good. The food was amazing. The service was pretty good, but the food made up for it. There was so much I wanted to try.

our makeshift picnic.

By RochesterTraveler585 |

We stopped at The Cove for lunch simply because we found a parking space right in front. We saw no reason to wander around and get hangry, so we popped in to take care of business. Hubby ordered a mimosa, and I ordered a bloody mary - extra horseradish. We were not rushed, and the waiter was happy to let us take our time, sip our drinks, and watch the world stroll by on Castro St. There were 2 or 3 empty tables, so we felt comfortable lingering. It was July 4, and we felt like having burgers. Traveling bears don't necessarily get to have an independence day picnic, so we made our own. I had the Cove Burger, exquisite with grilled onions and brie. Hubby went for the classic bacon cheese burger. Both were hot, fresh, well cooked, delicious brioche buns with a perfect grilled crispness on the edges. I can't speak to the mimosa, but the bloody mary was the perfect compliment. Only after we were done, did I realize that the Cove only has a beer/wine license, so the bloody mary was made with soju. Bloody delicious! The prices are a little high, but after 8 days in the Bay Area, we had pretty much given up on finding a bargain anywhere... The waiter was a castro sweetheart. His pearl necklace was the perfect accessory. Thanks for a fun, relaxed, tasty, last-day-of-vacation, 4th of July picnic!

more than a restaurant

By joshkspa |

I went with friends who go here at least twice a week. After 3 hours of bottomless mimosas and tasty breakfast, I felt like I was friends with the staff, especially Solange. Great good, great drinks, and I got 3 hugs on the way out. I'll come back, how often do you connect with a restaurant on this level?

Great place for lunch

By Wendy M |

Great food with really helpful staff makes this a good place to eat. Prices are very reasonable, portions good and food tastes wonderful. Definitely a place to stop if in Castro

No-nonsense, excellent food (and friendly service!)

By Timon_cs |

We had dinner here several times, and each time the food was good. There are daily changing specials, and the bread pudding for dessert is really good. Sitting in the window is a good way of seeing the world go by!

My 2nd visit....

By Nick S |

....and was not disappointed! This time called for lunch. Was on my own but made to feel welcome from when I walked in the door. The staff are friendly and make you feel relaxed. The locals create such a nice atmosphere with their chit chat. Lots to choose from on the menu from breakfast thru to dinner with daily specials. I opted for the home fried chicken basket with fries and side salad & had a glass of house white wine. Will definitely go back here again whilst strolling in the Castro!

Great brunch

By Philip R |

Brunch on a Saturday morning hit the spot "the morning after the night efore" - good home cooked food and great corned beef all washed down with bottomless pomegranate mimosas. Plus service with a smile - what's not to like?

friendly neighbourhood restaurant

By SwissGuyWinti |

This is the place I used to go several times a week when I was still living in the city. Returning there after more than 10 years the owner, Solange, still recognized me! I still love that place, the food is good, staff is friendly, customers diverse... That's what I used to like about the Castro: It's not the same anymore out on the street, but it certainly is inside the Cove!

That's the job!

By Jerome&Rudy |

Pti dej US classic in Castro. The welcome is really warm. The service is efficient. It was not our best breakfast of the stay but it did the job.

Quintessentially Castro....

Quintessentially Castro....

Good Old USA

By SecretStayer1 |

Great USA diner style food. You get what you pay for but loved the service and friendly style. Try the Philly Cheese Steak

Great breakfast and lunch

By Alan D |

Great iconic restaurant in the Castro. Service is very attentive and friendly. Coffee is fresh and made locally. The food was good. I had the omelet with toast and hash browns. The omelet was soft and had just the right amount of filling. Prices were reasonable. Lots of regulars come here. They have all you can drink mimosa.

Just south of mediocre

By Scott |

I give this place a try once about every 10 years. Tonight was the night, and it did disappoint. Ordered the fish and chips. Everything looked great, but the fish was simply flavorless. French fries were just slightly below average.

Great breakfast place

By paolok66 |

My third visit over the years at this local cafe in Castro ! Brilliant for breakfast , always pretty full . Eggs Benedict in various styles are excellent. Open for lunch and dinner as well

Tasty home style food

By newhubclan |

Fantastic value for money and if you hanker after a tasty "homestyle" meal then The Cave is for you. Casual atmosphere and friendly service.

Pretty Cool Diner

By Moonette |

Cove on Castro was one of the places we tried in SF last week. Like so many others, we stumbled on it and, luckily, on a Thursday when they make hot donuts. Our meals - burger and grilled ham & cheese (both with fries) - were both good. . . nothing spectacular. Our friend had fried chicken, and she enjoyed it. All of the food was plentiful, hot and typical diner food. The donuts (choice of plain, glazed, sugared or cinnamon) were WONDERFUL. They make them when you order them, so they come to the table hot. I repeat. They were wonderful. The one big negative was the waiter. He had a bit of an attitude and was less than friendly. If you have the chance, try it out. It's right across from the Castro Theater.

Brunch!

By KTandLee |

We had the San Francisco Eggs Benny & the Mexican Eggs Benny. Both were really tasty, as was the fresh squeezed orange juice. Prices were reasonable, portions were generous, and service was friendly. I would recommend!

Excellent for a bite at any time

By keenon |

Cheap is not the word but the prices are really reasonable. The food is great and the options are vast. Staff is excellent and you are served soon.

Great spot for people watching

By Craig V |

With quite a few dining options on Castro St decided on this place for lunch, blackboard outside had some nice soup options and other specials but once inside decided on burgers, while I cant vouch for the cheese and bacon burger my partner ordered, I absolutely loved my cove burger which had brie and fried onions on it, it tasted just like an old fashioned burger, probably the best burger I had while travelling around the US, the burgers did come with either a side of soup or salad or different sorts of fries or onion rings, I so wanted to try the broccoli soup but ended up having the home made fries with the burger. Service was ok but the waiter came around wanting to know what we wanted to drink after leaving us with the menus for about 5 mins, the menu only had normal beverages on it but we observed another table who had beers, so we enquired about that and he bought a separate menu over, this is only a minor quibble but he could have bought both menus when were seated. Enough of that though, the food was good and very well priced, we were placed in a window seat which was wonderful watching all the eye candy walking along Castro St, all was right with the world.

Humiliating

By Mauricio S |

It was the worst experience I had in a restaurant in my life. An old man who I think is the owner of the establishment came to us in a rude way, demanding that we decide soon. That's what we did and we did not eat anything, such a horrible experience. It was clear that we were not welcome there, since there were only boys there. We drank our drink and left without eating anything. A revolting and totally contrary experience to the good service we had throughout our trip in Sao Francisco

Super quick super friendly!

By angelaymlau |

I had read that this place was one of the top places for breakfast/brunch and mimosas and while I did not have the latter I did have the veggie eggs Benedict which is not on the menu but one made for me when I informed them I was vegetarian. Super efficient and friendly service full of friendly locals. Not a trendy looking place but very local-looking.

Love it

By Nick S |

This small cafe does a great breakfast. I stopped in here before trekking up to Twin Peaks. The staff are ultra friendly and take care of your every request. Perfect for a light bite or a coffee & free wifi.

Excellent Sunday brunch

By andmol3 |

Quirky cafe in bohemian neighbourhood. Service impeccable. Food really good (french toast superb). Most of all really friendly with great atmosphere. Would highly recommend

Classic American home cooking

By kwine |

My favorite local breakfast place for more than 20 years. I love this place. It has the friendliest service, and is the best example of American classic diner food left in a city overrun by pretentious restaurants. If you are visiting and want to eat like a local, go here.

I feel at home

By trolleyVermont |

Great place to eat friendly service good food ,wheelchair acessable in restaurant but not in restroom. My visit was about 2 years ago.

Regular Customer

By Mark H |

I visit the Castro each fall. We go here every morning for breakfast. They also have very good lunch and dinner. It's a good, local place and fun for people watching. Service has always been excellent.

Much better places to try than this

By GTGTGTGT |

Really gone off the boil - really bad service - no butter brought when it had been offered and no coffee fill up till actively requested. Scrambled eggs more like a greasy chopped omelette. Would not surprise me if they were made from a mix.. The place has not changed in years but in this case that is NOT a good thing - much better food and service on offer locally - and often cheaper...

Great breakfast, diner style

By swtravels86 |

We had a great breakfast here during a recent visit to the Castro. The menu is diner style but they have plenty of options. The portions were good size, prices reasonable and service friendly/quick. I would recommend. Grab a seat near the window to people watch. This place seems to have a lot of local regulars.

great meatloaf and mashed potatoes

By Philomela |

be sure to get to Cove Cafe, where they've put new paint on the walls, new mirrors, flouncy curtains on the windows. the food is as good as ever and the wait-staff is personable and, at times, entertaining.

Sure Fire Great Breakfast and Comfort Food All Day

By Wayne G |

This quaint little restaurant on Castro Street serves a classical breakfast all day and lots of comfort foods and sandwiches for lunch and dinner. We mostly eat there for breakfast because it is the best in the area. If you want a quick and relatively less expensive lunch or dinner and like home cooking, this is the place for you.

Stick To Your Ribs Kinda Place

By Kirk W |

Not a posh place to eat. Not a hip and cool up and coming sorta place where small amounts of food are arranged on your plate for artistic presentation. But a place where you get an average midwestern kinda meal. The type of place grandpa would say he'd go if he wanted something to stick to his ribs meaning a good taste and a good amount. I make a point of stopping here when I need a satisfying meal in a comfortable atmosphere where the staff is friendly and the prices are not too high.

A neighborhood find!

By utelein |

This place has been part of the Castro a long time. The basic food and friendly service have kept it going for the past 25+ years I have lived in the area. Great breakfasts. An excellent selection of soups. Burgers or vegetarian, something for everyone. Hands on owner and long time staff. Tourists coming to the neighborhood can enjoy a great meal, catch up on e-mail with the free wifi and be part of the Castro.

Amazing restaurant

By Sandrine D |

Excellent service, smiling staff and delicious food in the best San Francisco’s district! Great address for anyone who is visiting Castro! Thank you again :)!

Amazing breakfast

By Frank T |

It has actually been my thrid time in this place and I keep coming back. Their staff is very friendly and the menu has everything you wish for. Their pancakes and their eggs benedict are just great. If you are looking for breakfast/brunch, I definitely recommend this place.

I adore this place

By M00se1111 |

I spent a week in San Francisco and over those 7 days, I eat at least 4 meals there. The food is standard diner fare, but there's something about having a meal in the heart of the Castro. Looking out onto Castro Street in the shadow of the Castro theatre makes me so very happy. When I go to the Cove, I'm home.

Value fare

By David H |

Tired of over priced restaurants in the USA generally we settled on Cove Cafe's special of fish and chips for Friday night supper. Not fancy, but three nice pieces of cod in a crisp batter with fries and coleslaw. Tartare sauce was good, the slaw not to my taste but overall an honest meal at a sensible price of just over forty dollars for two with a beer and a pot of tea. My wife substituted fresh veg for her chips and it was well cooked and presented - if anything a bit too generous...

Brunch

By LeCheile201 |

222 (2 eggs, 2 bacon, 2 french toast) special plus bottomless mimosas for 20 bucks, delicious. Friendly staff.

Worst Breakfast during 4 day trip

By Patrick U |

Worst country fried steak I've ever had and I'm 53 so that says a lot. Bloody Mary was ok though. But for $14 that country fried steak was tough and tasted like chemicals. The hash browns were mushy and seem like they were made from frozen. The toast came unbuttered just dry with no butter provided. My friends ham omelette was one of his worst also. Fortunately we will never be back.

Simply Unforgettable ...

By Rolf S |

Calling all food lovers! Do you want to feel welcome - like it you haven't been to see your mother in 3 months...? This is the place. The food is fantastic and the menu is large and resonably priced. However, this is not the real attraction. The staff is just so friendly - especially Paul took an interest in our family. We went back 3 times over the course of 4 days. Last day was a Sunday morning and the place was packed. On one of thye outdoor seatings, there was a couple with 2 pet Ara Parrots having breakfast. This restaurant is also for animal lovers and everyone is welcome, obviously animals as well. The Cove Cafe will be our regular watering hole when in SFO. Thank you for making our visit a great one.

Hearty but nothing flash

By AndrewBenson |

It's a staple of the Castro and has been serving the community for years, and it's starting to show with the decor and menu. Hearty and friendly don't expect anything flash but you will be well fed with large portions of food.

Lovely, friendly service

By LadyMooMcr |

Wandered the Castro looking for somewhere to eat and was welcome in her by a nice lady who was very chatty. Sat outside and the view opposite is the Castro Theatre - very cool. Service was average in terms of speed, but great in terms of how friendly and chatty the server was - asking how our day was, offering local beer options - excellent. The food is fantastic and also huge portion sizes. I had a sourdough Turkey sandwich which was easily polished off with the local San Franciscan beer. Worth stopping by if looking for a bite to eat in the Castro.

Good breakfast!

By ClairettedeLondres |

We had 2 very good breakfasts at the Cove. Big portions, good welcoming, great pancakes and eggs benedict. They also have great deals for "early birds". A good start to anyone's day!

Nice Quiet Diner Style

By Darrell92104 |

I met friends there for dinner, and we had excellent food and a quiet place to visit and get acquainted.

Lovely lunch with a view

By Laura B |

The Castro Theatre is right accross the road. I had a beautiful vegan lunch. The falafels tasted very good and the staff is very friendly and lovely.

Great meal at the Castro.

By davidmuff |

Called into this diner on a visit to the Castro. Very friendly place with a lot of food on offer. Vegiterians looked after. The place is very clean and staff are all friendly. Meals were cooked well also beer on tap. Worth a visit.

I like this place!

By Serge G |

The Castro is a place I always enjoy visiting. On this visit, I discovered Cove Cafe. I did not have a full meal but stumbled upon an excellent apple pie a la mode that I'm raring to go back for! The restaurant is clean and well-maintained and I appreciate the strict smoking code in California. Restroom facilities are likewise clean and well-maintained. If you're in the Castro and you want something sweet, I recommend Cove.

Real down home cooking

By kwine |

I love this place, and have for 20 years. Its got incredible home cooking, and the scene reminds me of what San Francisco used to be many years ago. Lots of mom and pop diners, great food, reasonable prices, just about everything you could want in a neighborhood café. Those days are gone, except at the Cove.

Nothing Special

By Robin_K |

I had dinner here as I was tempted by the menu in the window. The Cove is in the heart of the gay area in Castro and does cater for the local community. The Tomato Bisque I ordered for starter was very nice and came in a small cup accompanied by a piece of fresh local bread. My Chicken Masala main course was generous and the plentiful veggies were fresh and cooked perfectly. The sauce was also very nice. What let the meal down was the chicken, which clearly been pumped full of water to plump it out. The chocolate and coconut pie for dessert was also dissapointing as it had the appearance and taste of having come straight from a packet rather than being home made. The staff were attentive in that my water glass was constantly replenished however there was really no attempt at conversation or making me feel welcome. The owner clearly knew other guests who appeared to be regulars and his attention was clearly on them. Overall I was disappointed with my choice of restaurant.

Classic Comfortable and Friendly

By cross182 |

This is my must go to place when in the city. Classic American Diner with a twist. Staff are extremely friendly and the kitchen produces consistent quality. Greek Salad is excellent and the Creative range of Eggs Benedict: Classic; New York: California; Louisiana; Denver add variety to the brunch offering, particularly when coupled with a Bloody Mary or Mimosa. (Only 2 months til the next trip to the city and my next visit.)

Great food at good prices in a fun atmosphere.

By pezdisney |

My husband and I went here for breakfast and the food was tasty and the service very friendly. Everyone working here seemed to be happy to be working there. It is popular and a short line but we got a table fairly quickly. Fun lgbtq video's are shown on TV's around the restaurant. They're open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. We only had the breakfast. I had a vegetarian omlette which was very fluffy and tasty. I would eat here again for breakfast and want to try out their dinner menu too.

Good food and nice folks...

By 1SFOSO |

Went here for lunch and was more impressed by the staff than the food. Don't get me wrong, the burgers and salads are pretty good, but not worth a visit just for the food. The staff are super nice and make sure you are comfortable and they let you linger, guilt-free. If you are in the Castro and looking for simple fare and a nice a atmosphere, come here.

old style

By Bill N |

Classic eatery with the pancakes and eggs style breakfasts, solid lunches, dependable service. A very friendly gay vibe and a long standing tradition so there are many locals, more than visitors, hanging out here.

Maybe the time of day?

By Cypherson |

Seeing the other reviews here, I'm inclined to think ours was a time of day mishap (plus they put up the closed sign as we were finishing...) Happened to walk by during a fast stop in the Castro on the way out for cocktails, popped in for a quick nosh. My partner had the turkey melt - dry and bland; my hamburger a bit wet and undercooked. For a fast meal, we didn't make much of it, polished off what we could and washed down with some fairly priced brew. Not quick to disparage, and we didn't send it back to be made over, so could easily have been an off order at the end of a night. Nonetheless, we left underwhelmed. Credit where it's due - the service was prompt, friendly and warm. Shame about the rest.

Easy tasty breakfast

By JPHauck |

This staple of the Castro never lets me down. Solid good tasty good food and easy access and availability. Recently had the pork chops for breakfast and they were perfect. Moist as you could want. Service is great. Friendly place. Always a good deal.

Great breakfast and service

By Monk2150 |

Went for breakfast, was delicious. What’s I guess even better is the service! They are so nice and love almost pours out of everyone around Castro area. Definitely would recommend for a feel good breakfast/brunch. Prices are in line with the rest of the city. We found states to be generally more expensive than the UK, which is funny as one would think London is an expensive place!

A Castro Must!

By R Tony Smith |

Absolutely loved our experience! Classic Castro in all ways, including historic artwork to perfect location and most importantly stellar service, literally… “Stella” was stunning in every way and will return because of her! Our breakfast and experience was absolutely perfect!

A bit pricey, but worth it.

By mzdov |

I recently came here with some friends of mine for dinner before a movie. Neighborhood restaurant that has a cozy feel. As with most restaurants in San Francisco, they try to make the most of the limited space they have and actually succeeded. Though it is close quarters, it's not so close that you feel crushed and can't enjoy your meal. My friends are vegetarians, and they had no problem with finding something on the menu to enjoy. They got the cauliflower fritters (which was a pretty nice size plate) and the Falafel which they both enjoyed. The portions were enough for the two of them to share and be full. The other person in our party got the Home Roasted Turkey Dinner. HUGE! Actual turkey slices, not some processed mystery meat. Lots of potatoes. Standard amount on the stuffing and green beans. If you like cranberry sauce then I suggest you ask for an extra. Very small amount, but the taste of everything was almost like having a home cooked Thanksgiving meal. I decided to try something different and got the Veggie Reuben (minus the Thousand Island dressing) and chicken soup. The Reuben was TO DIE FOR! I was so impressed with the taste, I was actually looking to see if there was meat on there. Super tasty and filling, literally tasted like a regular Reuben. The soup had nice chunks of chicken and veggies, however, the broth was a bit bland. That being said, I didn't hate it. I'm trying to watch my sodium intake and sometimes restaurant soups can be on the salty side. This was not the case. A little pepper and it was good to go. I've seen some review complaining about the service and attitude. I personally didn't experience that. Our service was speedy and polite. If you're looking for a nice place for some comfort food, I would definitely recommend stopping in. While the prices are a bit high, for the amount of food and the taste, I would have no problem returning.

Great food with a side order of sightseeing

Excellent home cooking, extra friendly and attentive service and a virtual parade of the beauty and diversity that is the Castro! Would definitely recommend!

comfortable neighborhood restaurant

I recently ate at Cove Cafe for the first time in years at a friend's suggestion, and I was glad to go back there. There were a lot of good choices on the menu--soups, salads, sandwiches, omelets, and more--including choices for vegetarians. Lunch tasted just the way I wanted it and filled me up. Coffee was bottomless. The servers were prompt, friendly, helpful, and patient. Cove Cafe has a comfortable neighborhood feel to it. It's a welcoming place. Lunch that day made me think that I should eat there more often.

Disappointing

Been years since I have gone to the Cove and was totally disappointed. Service was ok. Price was way out of line for the quantity and quality of the food. The photos are not what they currently put on the plate. There are a lot of better choices in the neighborhood.

Down Home Castro Jewel

Met a friend for an impromptu Sunday Brunch before heading to Delores Park. The location is great, right across from the Castro Theatre. Staff was very friendly, portions were more than generous, good was good, no pressure. The fact that it is spontaneous, no reservations required was a definite plus. Git the bill perfectly for what we needed.

Very good burger and clam chowder.

Stopped wanting an early dinner however the dinner menu does not start until 4pm. I had the burger and cup of clam chowder. The burger was cooked to medium as I requested and the bun toasted with butter with mayo, lettuce, red onion and tomato. The New England clam chowder was very good and super hot so very nice on a damp rainy day.

Wonderfully friendly people here

Great for Breakfast

Our first breakfast experience in San Fran and we weren’t disappointed. We sat outside as the sun was shining, The chicken apple sausage omelette was delicious. Service was efficient and friendly. Reasonably priced too.

There is a reason this place has been there forever

The Cove has been on Castro forever - and places don't last if they are not good. We had the dinner special that night and it was outstanding at a reasonable price. Attentive service and sufficiently quiet to carry on a conversation.... unlike so many other places.

How did I miss this place?

I have been to the Castro many times - but somehow never went to Cove Cafe. Dropped in there last night for dinner and it was awesome. The atmosphere is very neighborhoody and you can feel the (gay) history of the place and the neighborhood. Service was super friendly and very fast. Last but not least the food was really tasty. I will definitely be back the next time I'm in SF!
