This was our third and most disappointing visit to the Emerald, having purchased a $109 Groupon that supposedly provided me with $240 worth of menu. Hardly. The meal consisted of a potato soup, a small unremarkable salad, a plate with a few vegetables (three slices of carrot, one small potato, and a small piece of broccoli), a couple of slices of beef and three tiny pieces of lobster in a sauce over some bread, and a slice of cake. Their ad made it appear to be much, much more. A photo showing three large lobsters on a serving dish was accompanied by text reading "Chateaubriand beef and lobster tail" leading one to believe that an entire lobster tail would accompany a generous serving of beef. By comparison, a Filet Mignon served with lobster tail at Perry's (an expensive steakhouse) in downtown Austin is $46. There's no way the meal at The Emerald retailed for $120 each. In fact it could not be found on their menu. What they did is mark it up so they could discount it at Groupon. It is an old retailing trick. OK, so how do I feel now that I have been tricked? I feel tricked, not served. The food was decent, not wonderful, not plentiful, not bad, but I felt victimized, ripped off. The meal was probably worth a little less than what I paid for it. I paid $109 (at a comparable restaurant it would have been about $80-90), but the tip was based on a full price of $240, so I probably paid $30-40 too much. I said this was my third visit, and it will be my last. You can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but you have finished fooling this guy this time.

I purchased a Groupon for 4 to The Emerald because I had always wanted to try it but the price was prohibitive. I had read many reviews, both good and bad, so I was not sure what to expect. I told our friends who went with us that this was going to be an adventure so don't have expectations. When we arrived and walked in, the hostess greated me by name (since I had a reservation) and promptly seated us. There were two other groups of people in the restaurant before us. I have to say, the food was absolutely delicious! Even my husband, who travels A LOT and eats at fine restaurants all of the time, thought that the food was excellent. In fact, he couldn't quit eating until he had finished everything and was quite miserable for the evening! The Chateaubriand was cooked perfectly and almost melted in my mouth. The carrots were slightly sweet and buttery and were delicioius! The other veggies were roasted to perfection. Before the main course, we were served bread and butter which was good but not outstanding. However, the potato soup was incredible! The waitress overheard my friend go on and on about the soup so she brought her a full serving to go at no extra charge! I had enough meat and veggies to take home with me for lunch the next day and it was just as good as the night before. I, personally, wasn't too fond of the cake but the others in my party thought it was very good. I have to say, the meal was very good, the staff very pleasant (the chef greeted us and even came out and filled water glasses once), and we all agreed we would go back. The atmosphere was a bit of a different story. It wasn't that it was bad, it just caused me to feel we were in a time warp or something. I like old, quaint places and this was definitly both. However, I'm not sure it was what we would find in Ireland. Instead of being decorated in vintage and antique decor, this seemed more just old and somewhat cheesy. The Irish music playing in the background was a little too calming for us. I think I prefer my atmosphere a bit more cheery and upbeat. All of that said, the atmosphere would not keep me from returning to the Emerald for more of that delicious food! It was really scrumptious!!!

We arrived at 7 pm and were immediately seated. We received our drink order and some bread within ten minutes. We were served soup 30 minutes later and 30 minutes after that we inquired about our salad and were informed that one of the ovens had broken. None of the salad was cooked. It was a regular lettuce salad. But there was an apology about the dinner taking so long. By the time the entree was delivered, we were very tired of sitting in chairs that were not meant to be sat in for more than an hour. So we asked that our meal be wrapped to take home. As well as the dessert. They did not send the sweet whipped cream and cherry with the dessert. Now, I don't think this would have bothered us but at least three tables that were seated after we were, got served first and left a good half hour to an hour before we did. Two of the tables also had Groupons. We were also charged $57 over the Grouon (we had iced tea and one Guiness to drink) plus they recommended we leave a $40 tip. The food we had was good. No complaints. But we need softer chairs and an explanation long before we get to the angry stage of why we are not being served in a timely manner. Very disappointing evening.

A vintage and time worn cottage with atmosphere. Perfect for couples and very quiet allowing conversation. Food is average and service is attentive and tilted towards formal.

The Emerald Restaurant in Bee Cave, Texas, is a quaint looking cottage adjacent to a McCoy's Lumber Yard. Don't let the location of neighborhood fool you! The ambiance inside is rustic Ireland, with Irish tunes playing quietly in the background. The place is quiet! My wife and I could actually have a conversation in there without having to yell to be heard. The staff was superior. They were cordial, knowledgeable, and attentive without being intrusive. The presentation of dishes, along with utensils, was done in a most elegant manner. OK now for the food. We started with Irish potato soup, made with chicken broth, duck broth, onions, and white pepper. I can't recall ever tasting such a delicious and rich potato soup anywhere. The salad was prepared with a special house dressing made from scratch. I asked the waiter what was in it, and he listed some ingredients, plus 20 additional herbs and spices. I asked him if he could list them, and he said yes, he could, but that was a proprietary secret! I am still smiling at his smooth and quick response. Delightful. We had a wonderful lemon sorbet, "to cleanse the palate," and then chateaubriand for two. Everything was perfectly prepared and served with elegant style and flair. The quantities were more than sufficient, leaving scant room for dessert, but we soldiered on to enjoy the end to what turned out to be a perfect meal and very memorable dining experience. We will be back for special occasions. A restaurant of this level of excellence is indeed pricey, and it is not for those expecting assembly line food out of cans. Be prepared for some sticker shock, but it was indeed worth the price.

With funny waiters and great food, this place is worth the wait. This is a fancy irish restaurant with greatest irish food. Would come to again and again.

Atmosphere is quaint, service very good, food good, cost? Think again. We had a Groupon deal and it was priced like a 5 star Penthouse dinner. Glad we celebrated with our son and his wife. Wonderful evening, just much more than I expected, even with the Groupon deal.

My wife and I ordered the potato soup, the onion soup flambé and Irish Stew for the main meal. The soups were nearly flavorless. Disappointing. The stew had a bit of flavor, but lacked the hearty Irish zing we were expecting. Long on meat, but short on flavor. For dessert, we enjoyed an Irish Cream Cheesecake and Whisky Cake. Both were quite flavorful and enjoyable. We also had coffee and ice tea, but again they were not flavorful. Service was congenial and polite, but seemed unusually slow. General upkeep needs some work. For example, wallpaper was peeling in the restroom, stained ceiling tile and carpets were worn. Did not seem much money is going back into this area of the business.

We were visiting Austin and tired of steak and BBQ so we thought we would give this place a try. Very small restaurant. Very limited staff so don't expect fast service. We found the service and food to be excellent but very slow. This is a place where you enjoy and savor the food. We asked lots of questions about how food is prepared in Ireland (have seen soda bread prepared several ways, etc). It is a very pricey place but worth it for quiet evening special occasion dinner. There is a limited menu, all offerings are authentic Irish I ordered an Irish coffee for an after dinner and was surprised to findd that it is different and stronger than the Bailey's I was used to. Our server offered to replace it with a Bailey's. I decided to just drink it MUCH slower LOL.

Our group of eight goes out every year around Christmas to a nice restaurant for an elegant meal instead of exchanging gifts. This year, we chose the Emerald. One in our group had visited before and was pleased with the food and service on that occasion. On this night, we were not so fortunate. None of us knew if the restaurant was simply short staffed, unprepared for the number of diners on a Sunday evening or if we simply experienced a European pace of service, but 2 1/2 hours between being seated and the main course is pushing it for Americans used to faster, if not fast, food. By the time we were finished, three hours and thirty eight minutes after our arrival, we didn't dare order a dessert for fear we wouldn't make it home until after midnight. To be fair, the the staff was generally friendly although the time between visits to our table with food to be service often necessitated a reintroduction. I found the waiter's attempt at humor when suggesting that he toss a knife at a member of our party seated at the far end of the table to off putting and out of character with the atmosphere that the Emerald attempts to present. All of that said, the majority of the food, especially the main course, was quite good. As mentioned in earlier reviews, the salads did leave something to be desired and perhaps the potato soup is supposed to be room temperature although I would have preferred a bit more heat myself. All in our group was pleased with their main courses. Based solely on the food, I would return. Given the investment in time and money, however, I probably wouldn't choose to repeat the experience. Our group paid the full freight - no Groupons - so overall, I regrettably must say that the Emerald Restaurant fell short of expectations on the total experience.

Took my son(John Paul) for his birthday(Dec 13th), on Fri the 12th. Excellent 4 course meal. Twin Tenderloin Medallions w/truffles. Med rare, cooked to perfection. Owner/Chef(Paul John) and his two sisters(waitresses) are awesome folks. Lovely ladies who like to carry on a conversation. Mostly about Ireland, which I didn't mind one bit! Loved it. Great food and great people!

This is likely the best restaurant in Austin. It is romantic, highly elegant ambience, with excellent food, and the best service in town. If you have ever had the occasion to dine at high end restaurants in Ireland or Northern Europe, this is for you! Granted, the facade is a little worn but if you were traveling in the Irish countryside this is exactly what you would encounter. The friendliness of the staff is exceptional. I noticed in other reviews that a very few decried the "serving of dessert between courses". That is a sorbet and is meant to clear you palate for the next course, it is NOT the main dessert. The bread at the beginning is to set up your appetite, again, it is not meant to be "dessert first." Each course is thoughtfully planned and served with great care. I will allow that you must a be prepared to spend at least 2 hours there to enjoy the entire experience, but then The Emerald does not pretend or desire to be a fast food restaurant. It is Irish exceptionalism found in Austin. So, if taking your time to talk and be with the one you love while being catered to in a caring manner that has incredible ambience while eating the finest Irish delicacies appeals to you, please give this wonderful restaurant a try. If you want to eat fast food, and yell across your table at your kids and spouse, then this is not for you.

After reading mixed reviews we decided to try, we really hoped we would like this place and finally went. First I have to say the sisters that also seat and wait on you are incredibly sweet, very nice ladies. The place is old and despite being run down a bit with cracks in walls and dingy table linen I still found it a bit charming inside. We wanted the Irish stew and then planned on sharing another entree. They were out of the stew but said they had everything else, we decided on something else and they were out of that as well. We went with one of each of the specials. One was a shrimp dish that was drenched in some sauce with little what appeared to be tiny shrimp you would find in a mayonnaise based salad. It was not good. The potato soup they serve did not taste bad, but was watery and lacked and depth of flavor. The only part of the food we enjoyed was the tomato based salad dressing which was good. We did have a nice bottle of wine, but our dinner for two was well over two hundred dollars (fine for good quality) including a bottle of wine. Neither of us could get through half the food. We did both end up with sour stomachs that evening as well. Such a shame for what could be a great little place.

A unique dining experience, nearly like being invited into the home of an Irish chef. We had the Chateaubriand for two, 4 courses with plenty of food. Even with a dining coupon, it is pricey. This would be a place worthy of a special occasion or celebration.

Loved the ambiance of this place..has a European flair to the design and style of the furniture, lace tablecloths . The Waitstaff were courteousand attentive. However, my husband and I waited over forty minutes to receive the Chateaubriand special dinner experience meal. I loved the meal selections on the menu..a bit on the pricey side but is wonderful for very very special occassions. The food was served warm and with spectacular presentation (in reference to the Chateaubriand Entree for two. I would certainly revisit this charming , classy restaurant.

I took my wife to the Emerald for her birthday. It was midweek, and we were the only customers during our stay. It is a very small, unassuming restaurant with Irish influence throughout--pottery, wall hangings, decorations and photos; even the waitperson was Irish. There is the option of three five-course meals or a limited menu of their specialties and one or two specials. We had one of their specials, redfish. It was well presented and well prepared, with tasty sides and a nice salad.

We've lived in the area for 5 years and had never been until last night. You feel like you're walking up to a quaint little cottage/home. It is so cute and the service was exceptional. We had a groupon for the Chateaubriand for two and every single thing they brought out was amazing. We ate until we couldn't eat anymore and brought the rest home with us. I can't recommend this little place enough, such a pleasant surprise and we'll definitely go back.

I have driven by for 8 years and finally stopped. The service was impeccable! Food fantastic! It has become a favorite place to dine!

We dinner at this amazing restaurant to celebrate the New Year. It was quite out of the way of the hotel we stayed at downtown, but completely worth the drive. It's a small building with lots of interesting and historic decor. The family that owns The Emerald is fantastic and they make you feel at home the second you walk in. Although the prices are high, our entire meal, from the appetizer to the Irish coffee and dessert was well worth the cost. They had an amazing selection of wines as well. I highly recommend this place for a romantic evening out at a place in a place that won't be forgotten.

I am very glad that we were able to enjoy this bit of the Emerald isle here in the states. The atmosphere, food, and service is superb. If you have never had the opportunity to visit Ireland but want to experience an evening there, come to The Emerald Restaurant! We were able to find out about this hidden gem through Groupon, and had the Chateaubriand for two special. All I can say is Wow!

I had a very similar experience to what was described numerous times before. I also had a Groupon. For Groupon lovers, beware that even though your certificate does not say specifically that there are blackout dates (just that reservations are required), there actually are dates when you cannot use your Groupon. We tried for New Year's Eve and were told we could not use it on 12.31. on . O.K. that was understandable. Unfortunately, we also could not use it a day later, on January 1st. Then we called back a few weeks later on a Friday to make reservation for Saturday and did not get a call back that night. Next day, we called several times, left 2-3 messages before receiving a call back. Third time was the charm and we got a reservation. The dining experience was not bad, but I have to agree with previous reviewers that the place is in a desperate need of either complete remodel or at least a deep cleaning and slight update. The place is small. The staff (the owners) were attentive and it felt a little bit like taking a trip to 1980's when it comes to food presentation and overall experience, which, for some diners does not necessarily have to be a bad thing. I did not have a problem with what some people described as "slow" service, as with this type of dinner, I prefer to take my time. (It may also have to with the fact that I am a European and sometimes consider the American "fast" service and a bill delivered during dinner without asking for it very rude.) When it comes to the food, it seemed simple but well executed, but I agree it lacked excitement, innovation, and the presentation was very "old fashioned". It was a little bit like good grandma's cooking. The only item I definitely did not care for was the whiskey cake. Don't get me wrong, I love deserts and, as a European, I am used to deserts made with alcohol and actually enjoy them. But this cake was soaked in something overly sweet and sticky and I am not sure if the "soaking" substance actually contained any whiskey at all. Our server asked if we wanted to share one and take the other one with us for the next day, which was a great suggestion, because we were really full. At home I tried the cake after I added a little bit whiskey and it tasted better, just could not cut through the overly sweet substance it was already soaked in. I am not going to comment on the wine list and prices of some of the wine, but here is a tip for those who do not want to break the bank: get 1/2 carafe of the house red ($18). The wine was O.K. and enough for us. I don't recommend ordering bottled water. They charged us $7.90 for a bottle. The bill said it was a sparkling water, but what we were served was completely flat and tasted strange. The highlight of the evening was the music--there was a harpist, who also played the back pipe, flute, sang, and occasionally help seat newly arrived guests. We arrive shortly before 6 p.m. and left around 8:45 p.m. Overall, we had fun, but I don't think we are going to be back any time soon. The prices in their menu really are highly unrealistic and even though most of what we served was good, it was not worth $175. My husband used to be a chef and I also worked in restaurant industry for several years, so I feel I can make this comment. There were 8 tables dining during our visit and everybody was getting the same thing (Chateaubriand with or without lobster and pork dinner with identical soup, salad, desert), so I assume everybody had a Groupon. I know from experience that some people are lousy tippers, but the "recommended" gratuity note is inappropriate in my opinion and unnecessarily aggravates customers.

We had dinner reservations at 6:30pm and left at 10:30pm. Food was mediocre and over-priced. There were two tables in the restaurant, yet the service was unacceptably slow.

This has become a home away from home for us. The food is amazing, the atmosphere perfect and the service is beyond perfect. Every time we go it's an incredible personal experience. So much so we choose to use them for our wedding. Never a bad time or experience here. I wish I could go daily!

Interesting to note that I think most people were using groupons during our visit. Enjoyed the atmosphere however definitely need to pour money into updoing everything. They are celebrating 30 years and I doubt any upgrades have been done since they first opened. Enjoyed the soup and the meal. Chateaubriand is supposed to be lobster and filet as main two ingredients. The meat, although quite good was certainly not filet. Having consulted for some restaurants in the past, food costs should be in the 30 to 35 percent area. I would guess here the costs are more like 10 percent. Prices on the menu are ridiculously high. If people eat here without Groupons they are not going to enjoy receiving the bill.

A dining coupon attracted us to a restaurant that we ydid not know existed. Drove by it many times and not notice It. We are glade we found it. The atmosphere is like a cottage in thd old country. We were greeted with a warm Irish welcome. We had chateaubriand for two which had a fabulous table side presentation and tasted great. Good service. Will go back again.

This is a shabby unkempt excuse for a restaurant. I am Irish and this is not the standard of cuisine that anyone would experience at home. It is profoundly overpriced and though the owners respectful they are truely rogues in their ability to charm money for substandard surroundings, food and service!!! The special was explained but the price never shared. The requested items were not available.Trust me the "trickle" bread is an old reheat and the scone bread has freezer burn that is nasty on eating. We do not serve strawberry butter in Ireland. Do not waste your time on money on this establishmet it in no way reflects the culinary delights in ireland It is shameful and an embarrasment, I would also suggest that the health department take a look around. !!!

sat at a table with soup crusted to the spoon and a dried up misquito on my plate. the lobster was drowning in a cheese oil goop and the meat was not a real filet. it was a mystery meat- no doubt. the ambiance is laughable, shabby not charming.

This is someone's attempt at creating Irish food. They do ok with the food. The prices are the real problem here. You could visit Ireland (as I have three times) and get much better food for much less money. Given the fact that Irish taxes, etc are significantly higher than ours, there is absolutely no reason for Emerlad to charge such high prices. You can find better values all over Austin.

Something must have happened to this place after the 2011 new year because most of the reviews written before that are very positive and nearly all of them written afterwards are terrible. Well, count me in among those who found it terrible, especially for what they charge. The food was mediocre at best and not really what was promised by the Groupon. Service was just plain bad, though the individuals were very nice. The decor was the worst part. This is not a romantic setting - it is simply in disrepair. Dirty, dingy, and icky. I was afraid to touch anything ion the restroom. This is NOT the Irish tradition I'm familiar with. Cleanliness and pride in the home is next to godliness for the Irish. NO WAY this was fine dining as they advertise themselves to be. We couldn't wait to leave and were very, very disappointed. Worst dining experience I have ever had, overall.

We were in town for SXSW and were meeting friends for dinner and they suggested meeting at The Emerald Restaurant. We really didn’t know what to expect and pulling up we were immediately impressed with the quaintness and look of this cottage house restaurant. The inside is decorated with all the looks of Ireland . From the clover covered plates and wallpaper to the dress of Michele the hostess we couldn’t feel more like we were in the Emerald Isle. We ordered the scallop and escargot appetizers and the chateaubriand dinner. The bay scallops were amazing and the escargot best we ever had. The chateaubriand was cooked perfectly and delicious . The dinner came with soup and salad as well but not your ordinary soup, the onion soup was prepared in a way I’ve never seen using the onion as the bowl and a stack of cheese that they served flambé. The style matches the flavor. The service was unmatched and Michele our server’s look was that of a porcelain doll. The desserts were heavenly as well. We couldn’t have asked for a better meal or experience. We can not wait to go back.

We pass by this place on our way home very often, and have always been intrigued, but don't make high dining a priority in our monthly budgets. A groupon deal became available, and we decided to give it a shot. First, let me say that the staff in no way made me feel like less of a customer because of the Groupon. They were pleased that we had found them through Groupon. The actual transaction to redeem the coupon was pleasant and friendly. The decor is quaint...lots of clovers, lots of antique pieces. The seating feels much like you are in your grandmother's kitchen. The food was very good. Potato Soup, Chateaubriand Steak with a mushroom sauce, and an Irish Whiskey Cake with marmalade and cream were all highlights. There was no way we could finish off the cake after all the other courses, so we took most of that home with us. I do want to re-emphasize the service. The staff treated us very well, with enough attention to keep our glasses filled and the courses coming through, but not overbearing. We were introduced to both the chef and the daughter of the owners (they also waited on us). They remembered our names as we left. Very nice touches. The only criticism I can think of is the price of a bottle of wine, but it was on par with other places that do the same. Next time we go, we will get it by the glass instead of a bottle. We will definitely be going back for special occasions, and look forward to seeing future Groupons! :)

A must go to if near Austin. If the mouth watering food that exudes a loving touch doesn't tell it all, the care and warmth this Irish family provides is truly amazing. I can't say enough of their generous spirit that enlivens the soul while their food so deliciously quenches the appetite.

I'll have to post it here. And everywhere else. Let them keep up with me. This is a word for word of what I have on Yelp. Don't try to silence me, I'll only review harder. I hate to have to write this review, as the server and everyone there was extremely nice. But....it has to be said. For the prices they charge, I have to agree with the other reviews that say this place is a scam, and just overall....pretty weird. Warren Jeffs cult compound weird. We were having our one year anniversary dinner, and my girlfriend always wanted to try this place. We arrived and were promptly seated by a waitress whose Irish accent seemed to disappear halfway through the meal. My girlfriend ordered a glass of wine, the only affordable one being a house white. I ordered a Guinness at the suggestion of the waitress. Something tells me they had no other beers. The potato soup was ok. Nothing special, but not bad. Our salads came, and YUCK. Fast food quality, nasty dressing. Seriously, you'd get a much better salad on an airplane. The waitress asked how we would like our Chateau Briaund cooked. I ordered medium rare, my girlfriend like medium well. Ok, no problem. 30 - 45 minutes later, the waitress brings out a huge platter with one steak on it. The platter seemed to dwarf the steak. She said since my girlfriend prefers medium well she can have the end pieces which are more cooked and I can have the middle. Once again, weird and disappointing. The carrots were way too sweet and I didn't touch the broccoli, which looked boiled to within an inch of it's greenness. We decided not to stay for dessert (like most people) so we got them to go. Later that evening we found it to be two small pieces of cake so sickly sweet we couldn't eat it. The check came in at $255. With a "suggested" gratuity of 20%. Tacky as hell. $255 for a $50...at BEST...meal. Here's the deal........................when you overstate the quality of your product, you create unrealistic expectations. When you create expectations, you should be able to deliver on those expectations. If you can't, then you do yourself a disservice, the customer a disservice, and your product a disservice. The meal wasn't BAD......it just wasn't what is was hyped to be. And that created a very negative reaction by me. State the true quality of your product, price it accordingly, and let people tip what they think it's worth without needing to "suggest" a gratuity. If your product is really worth what you say it is, you would NEVER have to suggest a gratuity. Just sayin....

Those telling you to avoid are spot on. It took forever and food was so-so. Very pricey. Not sure how some people got a good experience. Would never return.

We had another great experience here at The Emerald. We brought our eldest daughter here on her 28th birthday and as usual, their Chateaubriand steak is the BEST. It surely melt in your mouth. It was a Friday night when we came and we're very lucky to have been serenaded by a gentleman with his LYRE. Great service as usual, and as soon as Michelle, the Owner, knew it was a birthday surprise for my daughter ... she brought in a piece of small cake for her to blow. That was so sweet of Michelle to have done that on a short notice. We had the great food and BEST service as usual, and they ALL deserved some BIG tips for their jobs well done. Thank you again, The Emerald. We'll be back soon.

Celebrated our anniversary at Emerald's. We have lived here 12 years and this was our first visit. The old house, which is now a restaurant is like a walk in European time. We started with a nice cab and had escargot for appetizer. The escargot was excellent. For our entrée's, I had the lobster baked in a breaded crust. One of the best meals I've ever had! My wife had the steak medallions topped with pepper spices. Was a very large portion in which she loved. The meal was expensive, but was so good, I felt like it was justified. Service was excellent. We will be back and we highly recommend the experience.

If you are looking for a unique fine dining experience in Austin or near Austin, youll find no better than The Emerald restaurant, out 71 highway going west. Its a high end dining experience delivered in a cozy cottage with style and skill but not attitude. Perhaps because it truely a family business, started by the mother, an immigrant from Ireland and many of her kids and relations continue to run this hidden jewel on the west side. The food isnt really Irish, its traditional continental with and Irish twist. You can get all your classics from the continent (I highly recommend the chateau briand, one of the best ive ever had) all served with a old world pacing. Dont come here if you are in a hurry or like your food courses served one after the other. Its slow and its not bad service, its by design, the way it used to be. The wine list is also heavy on the Continent with French and Italians being featured plus some truely eye popping (and wallet busting vintage bottles). Which reminds me, dont come here on a budget, its at the high end of high and worth every penny. The only other downside is its kinda far out, but that just keeps the tourists away.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this restaurant! The food is absolutely some of the best that I have ever had. It is expensive but the portions are extremely large and worth every penny. Plan to relax and make an evening out of it, it's a wonderful experience and the family staff is so sweet and accommodating. The French Onion soup is a must-have for an appetizer :)

Disappointing 5 course dinner with a sorbet cleanser and the food is average masquerading as lobster and chateaubriand. Basically pretending to be a high end restaurant with average food at best and below average atmosphere. The cottage restaurant needs major updates and improvements for the prices charged. It is quirky, tacky and lacking ambiance. One positive note the service was friendly and attentive.

Wow, our neighbors have raved about this restaurant for over a year, so we grabbed a Groupon and went last night for the chateaubriand, which was a complete four course dinner. The soup and salad where ok, although the salad was overdressed, we all were scrapping the dressing off. The dinner serving was two skinny slices of beef which was tough, chewy and slathered in a gloutenous mushroom gravy which covered the meat. The best part was the dessert which was dense with Irish whiskey. They did not have many of the wines listed on the menu as well. Our neighbors apologized for picking the restaurant and we all agreed that we would not be returning.

The Emerald is a true Irish Home. Meet by a brogue speaking owner lass..... Was a special evening. Birthdays for the 2 ladies and the gents that accompanied. The wine list offers a rare bottle for $30,000.00. But a price point is available for every budget. We had a dream meal. Rich Irish Potato Soup. A wonderful salad. A Sorbet to cleans the pallet. A wonderful feast served at the table. Any of the dinners for 2 looked and have rave reviews from the table. We ended with Zabaione ( egg yokes, deep cream spiked with Irish Whiskey ) for dessert. A wonderful meal served by the husband... the chef and wife... our server. Doing this for 30 years. I can not wait to have another special event to return to The Emerald Restaurant

We been to the Emerald Restaurant on 3 occasions now. The first time was in 2003. We were excited to go there as we'd heard a couple of people giving it good reviews. I wouldn't normally remember a restaurant experience 9 years on...but this one has stuck with me. It was very quiet for a Friday night and the service was very good. In addition to the menu items, we were told of a house "Special" which was 3 courses starting with French Onion Soup, then Chateaubriand and finally whiskey cake (VERY similar to the current Groupon). We weren't told how much it would be (and didn't ask...although in hindsight we should have!), but when the check came we were shocked. In addition to the "Special", my wife had a diet coke, and I had a single glass of house wine....the amount of the check was $247 before tip. To this day, it remains the most expensive meal for 2 we have eaten anywhere in the World. Does that equate to the best? Not at all...In fact although the soup was pretty good, the rest was desperately mediocre. We chalked it down to experience and vowed to never return. However, two years ago a friend told us she was having a birthday celebration there so we ended up there with 3 other couples. We knew not to order the "Special" this time and hoped that the A La Carte would be a better experience. The first thing I noticed was that nothing appeared to have changed in 7 years. What looked quaint and quirky 7 years previously though, now looked tacky, dirty and run down. Once we checked out the menu we were shocked at some of the prices for an establishment in this state of repair. It simply doesn't feel you are in an expensive restaurant. Anyway, we all made our choices and told the waiter...strangely though, the two people who wanted Irish Stew were told it wasn't available. Really? An Irish restaurant that DOESN'T have Irish Stew? We later heard of other people who had tried to order Irish Stew and were similarly disappointed. I don't suppose it's anything to do with the fact that at $28.50, it's the cheapest thing on the menu and they don't really want you to order it!? Having ordered our overly expensive entrees we waited an age for them to be brought to the table and were largely disappointed. The $40 fish dishes were spoiled by the presence of heavy, cream based sickly sauces, and the steaks were just OK....If I'm paying high end, downtown steakhouse prices ($43) for a steak...it had better be better than OK. So...once again a very underwhelming dining experience, completely soured by poor service, outrageous prices and sub-standard food. The third...and what will for sure be the final visit last month was a result of someone buying us a groupon as a gift....which we felt compelled to use rather than this place getting money for absolutely nothing. Decor is still the same. service was slow and the food was mediocre at best. I also heard someone not doing a groupon ask for the Irish Stew....guess what? They didn't have any! I'm writing this review now since I just received another groupon email informing me of the great value $59 for $175 worth of food at Emerald and I actually find it annoying that yet more unsuspecting suckers will be taken in by this. Just saying it's worth $175 doesn't mean it's worth that, it's seriously not even worth the $59. In summary, this place has been ripping people off royally for over a decade. Their approach seems to be that since upscale restaurants with high end food charge high prices, then charging high prices will make people think that this restaurant is upscale and serves high end food...It isn't and it doesn't. There are so many other restaurants in the locale now which are actually good and reasonably priced, I have no idea why anyone would eat here nowadays.

This is the restaurant you go with a few friends and spend a couple of hours enjoying company and good food. The food is excellent, from the menu one would not think a vegetarian would find a meal they would enjoy, but just call ahead and they can make a vegetarian meal a vegetarian calls excellent. This makes having dinner here a meal everyone has a meal they thoroughly enjoy. The people working there wait on you with a big Irish smile and make the meal even more enjoyable.

The food was amazing and the service was just lovely,.. The place looks like a little cottage but it's so worth going to experience! Loved it loved it:D

All haters can go see the colonel! This was a special occasion, and the family who runs Emerald's did everything in their power to help us celebrate. This was leisurely dining at it's most elegant finest. The chateaubriand dinner was perfection. Although they have an extensive wine list, my wife and I stuck to whiskey. Everything from the soda bread to the whiskey cake were perfect. I highly recommend this restaurant to those who can appreciate incredible food, ambiance, and service. To those who wish to rush through a mediocre dinner, and don't have the capacity to appreciate quality, go somewhere where they serve Blooming onions and presidente margaritas.

Charming, Delicious, Romantic, and, yes, expensive. Come hungry and plan on staying 2-3 hours. This is NOT a fast food restaurant or a chain. We loved our dinner and the ambiance. The Restaraunt is 30 years old and was started by retired parents from Ireland. It is now run by the “children” who cook and wait the tables. By my count, there are only ten tables. As with most good European Restaurants, they don’t rush you- it is expected you’ll be there for a while. Meals are freshly prepared to order. Yes, as other reviews have noted, the prices are high- they need to be because they’re not trying to feed you and get rid of you in an hour. The homemade Irish breads are served with homemade butter, and these are fabulous. We had the shrimp appetizer (enough for 2) and I had the potato soup too- both were excellent! For our mains, I got the lobster special and my wife got the chicken (she loves mushrooms). The presentation was attractive, the plates were ample portions, and everything tasted great! Even the carrots and broccoli! After the breads, starters, and entrées, we didn’t have room for dessert- in fact, we took leftovers home (which they package up in these cool foil swans). We had a bottle of white wine too. The restrooms were clean and quite nice (important to some people like my wife). I will attach several photos. Dine here if celebrating a special occasion or for a special date. Not good for young children. Overall we spent 2.5 hours here, the bill was $186.73 and I tipped $33.27 ($220 total). The restaurant participates in the Rewards Network program (I’ll get 1,100 Delta Miles) plus the Yelp rebate program at 7%. I love getting incentives to enjoy a nice dinner with my bride! We look forward to returning for another dinner!

We had a fantastic dinner here the food was amazing, and the service was great. Do not come to this restaurant if you're trying to grab a quick bite before going to do other things. This was our date night, and coming to eat here allowed us to spend lots of time talking with each other as we had the four-course meal and it took us about two and a half hours to have dinner. Everything was amazing from the first course the last. I would highly recommend coming here.

Recently we went to the Emerald restaurant with another couple. Both couples were looking forward to the evening after having heard about the restaurant. We had previously purchased two Groupon coupons for $60 each. The coupons were for the restaurants $175/couple dinner and looked like a great deal. At that price level we had certain expectations for the food, service and atmosphere. The restaurant was a big disappointment on all three. In comparing it to other restaurants in the $150+/couple range I'd say that it was not even in the same category. Although the web site says you would have your choice of 3 fixed price menus, we were not provided any choice. We were served what I think was "The Kinsale - Chateaubriand” but our waiter never told us what was being served. As for the Chateaubriand it was not a traditional Chateaubriand but rather a much cheaper cut of meat smothered in a mushroom sauce. From past experience I'd have to rate this meal as a $25-$0 meal not a $87.50 meal Service was horrible. Our waiter barely spoke to us. When food was served it was served across our guest, even thought the server could have walked around the table so he could server each guest. It was like only one corner of the table could be used by the waiter. We had to ask several times for water and when the entree was served one guest in our party of 4 had to wait 2 extra minutes for there entree even though we were all eating the same thing. Definitely not the level of service you expect from an expensive restaurant. The atmosphere was just so but the tables were much to close. I had trouble hearing the conversation at my table because of the conversation in the next table. Problem was the guy in the next table was not talking that loud it was that the tables were that close. This is not the type of atmosphere you expect at an expensive restaurant, more like a cafeteria. So yes I was disappointed. I think the purpose of the coupon is to get people to try a new restaurant so they could come back. Well Emerald’s failed. I will never go back. They may have cheapened out on the coupon customer but if so they did themselves a big disservice.

We bought a coupon for $59.00 featuring chataubriand dinner for two thinking it was a great deal. Well as we approach the shabby building I start to worry, everything in need of repair, We are greeted and led to a table then served bread, very sweet bread. We were then served potato soup that was very good, then came the salad with only one dressing option, a very sweet red something, I love salads but I couldn't eat that. The chataubriand was then brought on a large tray with potato, carrots, broccoli. She carved the meat and served everything. The meat was good but a very small serving, we were served one half of a red small potato that was way overcooked, the broccoli was decent but the carrots had been cooked in so much sugar I chocked at the first bite. Then came a very small piece of cake to share, I see why it's to share a person would die if they are that much sugar! My three hundred pound husband couldn't eat it, pure sugar syrup. Then they bring the bill adding a $40.00 tip for themselves because they say the meal is a $199.00 value and they even charge tax on the $199. Think the state needs to look at that!!!! All in all, our "bargain" cost us $129.00 for a horrible meal and two beers. If it were'nt for groupon coupons this place wouldn't stay in business, I bet they have no repeat customers.

We went to celebrate my birthday and the evening exceeded our expectations. The atmosphere did remind me of the trip I took to Ireland. With harp music and bagpipes it was an entertaining evening. The highlight was the food and the presentation of the food. We had the Chateaubriand and lobster and all the courses were fantastic. The service was outstanding and the staff very friendly. We had very personal service. We will return to sample the other items on the menu. I really appreciate my wife setting up this evening for me.

I bought a groupon for The Emerald Restaurant for our 25th wedding anniversary. we got the Kinsale Chateaubriand (meal for 2). It came with Potato soup, a Green salad with homemade dressing, Lime sherbet, Heart of Tenderloin with Madeira mushroom sauce, Fresh Garden Vegetable and Irish Whiskey Cake. (menu price $175.50) We added a 1/2 carafe of wine and an Irish coffee to round out the meal. Everything we tried was so yummy, I don't even have words to express how good everything tasted! I am so glad we got the groupon otherwise price wise we would not have tried this restaurant. The family that runs the restaurant is wonderful, they were all very caring, sweet and attentive. The restaurant is a bit run down needs new carpet, wall paper, etc., but the food more than makes up for it.

In reading the other reviews, I would like to point out that this is exactly the kind of dining experience one would have in Europe. The service isn't considered slow, it's considered a perfect evening out when someone isn't standing over you waiting to "turn the table" and sell you the "special" which is food which is about to spoil. The EMERALD is a true jewel and has been a tried and true location for the past 20 years we have resided in Austin. This is a family run business and not a chain with predictable prepackaged food. If you want fast, fake food . . . this isn't your place. The prices are on par with Europe and the fact that you may spend the evening there is why the prices are higher. Go, enjoy, and know that your food is made with Irish love!

First of all this place needs a remodel bad, the food was so so, the soup was a joke, the entree was lets just say I can do better at home, the Irish whiskey cake was terrible, the house wine was 8.50 a glass & we ask what it was, you're not gonna believe how cheap these people are, it was Carlo Rossi in the big jug, I priced it at the grocery store for 11.00 a jug, the ac vents had mildew all over them & the lace tablecloths were ripped, I just had a wierd feel from the start, don't waste your money!!Oh yeah when they brought the check they recommended our tip be 35.00, ha, please don't suggest what I'm supposed to tip, I will tip based on the meal & service.

We had a very nice evening at the Emerald. The service was outstanding and warm in this cozy little cottage. The food was also very good and nicely prepared table side. We had the Chateaubriand and lobster. The meal started with their potato soup, very nice, and finished with an Irish whiskey cake. They offer a full bar and a nicely priced wine list. Good for intimate dining.

My beautiful wife and I visited The Emerald for our anniversary. The restaurant is quaint, has a very warm homey ambiance. The staff is attentive and friendly. We ordered in advance the french onion soup. The soup is in an onion shell, on top of a soda bread base, covered in cheese and piping hot. Very good. Suggestion: Ask for the French Onion Soup when you make your reservation. It is baked and takes a little more time. It was followed by a salad with a homemade dressing, excellent. A small portion of sorbet followed to cleanse the palete. The main course was the Chateaubriand, cooked to order with a mushroom gravy, it was very good. We ordered the house red blend that was very good. We finished off our dinner with the Bananas Foster, prepared at the table. We arrived shortly after 5pm, we paid our bill and left at 8pm. We had been warned by friends to plan on about 3hrs. It was every bit of that, but we enjoyed the harpist that played during the dinner. We used a groupon that made our bill reasonable. Otherwise, it would have been $231! Now to the problem, my wife has severe nut allergies, specifically pecans and walnuts. The question was asked when we made the reservation, was there any nuts in any of the dishes? No. When we arrived and were seated, shortly after the soup was served, Chef David came to the table. He was asked specifically if there were any nuts in any of the dishes? No, in fact his response was "we have been here 31 years and never had any nuts in the kitchen". We felt safe. Then came the Bananas Foster. It was prepared at the table, very good display by Chef Paul, very good presentation, it was served over a very large bowl of ice cream. Both of our first bites were full of pecans!! The ice cream was full of pecans!! We had been assured TWICE there were no nuts anywhere in anything!?! Luckily, my wife realized the dish contained nuts and spit out the bite, without any reaction. A scary end to a nice evening. She called the following day and talked to Michelle, who apologized for the error. Don't go without a groupon, its over-priced otherwise.

This was a very authentic Irish experience. The food was absolutely beautiful to look at and delicious to eat. The food takes a very long time to prepare (when you see the beautiful presentation you will know why) so if you go, prepared to be there a long time.

We had been wanting to try this place for a long time. It looked very enchanting, but the cost was prohibitive until we found a good deal on Groupon. We had the Chateu Briand dinner. They regularly want $175.00 for this meal. Definitely not worth it. It really wasn't worth the Groupon price we paid. The started us off with two types of Irish Soda Bread which was not really that bad. Then came the soup. How disappointing. It was a huge bowl of potato and looked very appetizing. The problem was that it was leftovers. How did we know that? Because you could tell it had been microwaved. When one side of the bowl is very hot and the other side is cold, you have a microwave in action. With prices a microwave should not even be on the premises and the food should be fresh every day. Next was the salad. We hardly ate any of it because the dressing did not come on the side and the salad was smothered in a dressing that was so sweet it would give you diabetes. The came the giant platter and big production of the Chateu Brian and vegetables. They had it all laid on a silver looking platter with all kinds of ganishments which looked to be at least a week old. All they did was switch out the cutting board with the meat and add the vegetables. The green garnish was wilting and the whole red peppers were all shriveled and some citrus that was dried up. The meat was very good however the mushroom gravy was full of sugar and even the fresh steamed broccoli and carrots has a sugar sauce on it. When so much sugar is used you know they are trying to hide something. For dessert was whisky cake. We took this to go because we were sugared out. Tried it at home and we have never had anything so sweet. The coup d' gras was they tried to charge us sales on the $175.00 versus the amount we paid for the Groupon. This is illegal in the state of Texas. We knew this was coming based on other reviews we read so we left the appropriate amount of tax along the tax code highlighted. How do we know this? My wife works for the IRS. Also, they gave a recommended gratuity based upon the MSRP of 175.00. Totally worth it. Other than the meat the food was subpar.

Culinary delights cooked to perfection. Sauces were simmering with flavor. Enjoyed the family approach of the owners. Two generations involved. We had fun talking about Ireland and getting their ideas on places to see next time we are there. Chateaubriand and fish dish were our entrees. The desert cake soaked with Irish Whisky was a delight. Hope to visit there soon. If you go, count on a leisurely evening. It is an experience not to be rushed.

If you are in a rush do not come here. The food here is absolutely awesome. I came here with my dad and my wife last year. We ordered the special of the day, lobster, steak and with Irish soup, salad and the desert. We especially liked the fact that the food is made on the spot, therefore the wait. Come here for the experience and the food and you will not be disappointed.

omg this is a great place to eat, but u need some money to eat here

My daughter and I had been to Dublin once but because of hectic sightseeing schedules day in and day out, we did not get the chance to eat their authentic foods. I saw these offers at Groupon one day and couln't resist but try. It's more than 7 miles from Austin but for $59 dollars (regularly $180), that is a great deal to have a 4-course dinner for two. Service is at its UTMOST ... our server Paul is very cordial, and very attentive to details. He definitely knows what he is doing, every course served is being explained to us in a very polite way. The ambience atmosphere is killing me at first but later on during the course of our dinner, it just started to set in and you don't feel like leaving this place. It teaches you to WHISPER and not to talk LOUD. What an amazing experience to bond with my daughter without being interrupted by anyone. Our 4-course dinner is unforgettable. We started with Irish Soda Bread with Strawberry Butter beautifully curved as small flowers. Those sliced bread are warm and freshly baked. Then comes Creamy Irish Potato Soup ... my daughter claimed she has NEVER tasted such fine potato soup EVER. We had a clean soup bowl empty up to last scoop. Fresh Garden House Salad with Irish Red colored Dressing next. Oh, it is very good! Then Paul came by with two scoops of itty bitty lemon sherbet served on a small elegant looking glass, it's supposed to cleanse youe palate before serving the main course. Then, our main course Chateaubriand Beef Tenderloin came in this beautifully decorated silver platter, adorned with colorful veggies surrounding it. I wil never ever forget how it melts in my mouth trying to enjoy its flavorful taste with mushroom sauce on top. Its serving is good for at least four people so we suggested to bring leftovers home. Last but not the least, Irish Whiskey Cake. We instructed our server to wrap it up to take home for dessert later when we get home. A little outdated decorations inside and in front of building especially the main door, you will need to struggle for it to open wide. Overall, this is one of the BEST dining experience I have ever had. I enjoyed every bit of it and the memories of every inch of SERVICE is one of reasons why I am planning to come back. A little pricey as compared to other fine dining but it's WORTH a trip. Thank you Paul ... keep up the good work. Note: My ONLY disappointment is; When I get home, I found out that those beautifully wrapped foil shaped as SWANS (my TO GO box) contained only the remnants of veggies without the chateubriand steak. I'm sure it's not intentional ...

As my group drove up, our first response a collective thought that this couldn't possibly be the place. From the outside it looks like a run-down shack crossed with a haunted hobbit hole. Plastic pots and miscellaneous kitsch filled the over grown and untended yard. Stepping into the foyer we were still perplexed. It smelled musty and old and was filled more knick knacks and ancient news articles about how great the place was. The interior of the restaurant is in desperate need of updating - worn carpet, peeling wall paper, etc. The women's rest room was straight out of a Twilight Zone episode. The bread, soup and salad were average at best. The chateaubriand was very tender but unfortunately swimming in an overwhelming sauce. We suspect that the lobster was purchased frozen as it arrived in a heavy sauce and was quite tough. The whiskey cake for dessert was so excessively sweet that it was inedible. On a plus note - the staff was very friendly and very attentive. Honestly, I feel very sorry for both the owner and the staff. I expect that this was once a great restaurant that has not weathered the passage of time well. They're trying hard - their formula just doesn't work any more. Fortunately, we used a Groupon for our first and last visit to this restaurant. Our post-dinner conversation revolved around how furious we would have been had we paid full price for this mediocre meal. Not recommended.

Like many other reviewers, I, too, was enticed to visit Emerald by a Groupon. My spouse and I chose the chateaubriand menu option for $79 for two people. The full menu for this option can be viewed on their website, and the list price for this is $175.50. They also have an ala carte menu, but I would guess that the only business they get these days is via the Groupon prix fixe deal, and I will explain why later. Let me first say that my overall experience can be captured in one word: bizarre. The ambiance is strange, the menu prices are unrealistic (the wine list caused me to literally LOL, more on that follows), the decor is dated with touches of tacky, and the place has that musty smell that reminds you of Grandma's house. On the other hand, the service is gracious and the food is solidly good. In fact, if I could ignore everything else about this place and rate it only on the food and service, I would give it 4 stars. 4 stars is what I really want to give this place because it is family-run and the owners seem very nice and appear to care about their food and service. But I cant. I just cant. A 4 star place is the kind of establishment that I would recommend to friends/family without hesitation. The fact is, I would be embarrassed to recommend it, and I am sure that if I did, all of my friends would be angry at me for the recommendation, and family members would simply disown me. So let's dive into the surreal experience that is Emerald Restaurant. As I first walked up to the entry, I was greeted by the quaint and charming facade. Then I looked down, and noticed that the family dog is buried right in front, in a prominently marked and decorated gravesite. Why did Stephen King's "Pet Sematary" come to mind? Little did I know that this was merely a foreshadowing of what was to come. The entryway/mudroom appears to be decorated by someone whose inspiration was "House Beautiful" from September, 1934. There was no host stand, so we entered the main restaurant and waited, while inhaling the musty smells ground into the worn carpeted floor from decades of feet stepping on food droppings. We were greeted and seated into a dining room filled with what must be heirloom pieces from great-Aunt Agatha's hope chest. There are literally doilies (with holes in them) on the table as tablecloths. Some might view this as "quaint". Many others will view this as tacky. While the decor includes lead crystal and china, it also consists of a cardboard count-down calendar counting the days until St. Patrick's day, faded posters of Ireland, and what looks like garden gnomes. Thus, I personally have to come in on the tacky side. The drop-ceiling tiles, ca. 1950, are falling apart, the wallpaper is faded and peeling, and I was left wondering when the last time great-aunt Agatha had cleaned the place. My first impression is that I was somehow transported from modern-day Central Texas to Eastern Europe 50 years ago. It is Old World and Third World at the same time, which makes for a rather depressing atmosphere. Ordering was easy since we had the prix fixe Groupon deal. I did take time to peruse the beverage list. My dinner companion and I know wine, and all of the "reasonable" New World options were at least $10-20 overpriced, even by restaurant standards. They also offer special occasion bottles, such as Cristal champagne. On a more ambitious part of the beverage menu, several options for vintage bottles of Chateau Lafite are offered at 4-digit pricing, including one for a whopping $35,000.00. I'm sure that if they actually had such rare bottles in good condition, they would indeed command these kinds of prices. However, I have serious doubts about Emerald's ability to cellar such bottles properly, given that parts of the ceiling are held together with duct tape. Was this a joke? It was to me, because I literally laughed out loud. If Emerald's owners happen to read this, my advice to you is that if these bottles are for real, sell them at auction and use the proceeds to renovate and deep clean your dining room. It would be money well-spent. You have very little chance of selling such things to the people who seem to make up the mainstay of your business - bargain-hunters who come in on Groupons. As for the food and service, it's hard to find fault, except that service is slow. Again, shades of (Eastern) Europe. This is not a place where you should expect American standards of prompt service. If you eat here, you need to adopt a European attitude toward dining. For the prix fixe chateaubriand menu, the courses were as follows: potato soup (accompanied by house-made soda bread and butter), garden salad, a lime sorbet (palette cleanser), the chateaubriand with vegetables and potato, and an Irish whiskey cake. All of the food was good to very good. The garden salad was just meh and consisted of chopped lettuce, grated carrot, a slice of tomato and was overdressed with a cloyingly sweet dressing that seemed to me like french dressing mixed with tomato-chili sauce. Although good, the food is far, far from haute cuisine. It is simple, traditional stuff that is neither technical nor elevated in any way. Personally, if I take the time and money to dine out at these prices, I expect to be surprised with something I haven't seen or tasted before. I definitely don't want to feel like I could have made the same meal myself at home for a tiny fraction of the cost. Unfortunately, I am confident that I could. That said, what we got was solidly executed and tasty overall, albeit uninspired. Now, here is why I give this place only two stars. It is an extremely poor value, even with the Groupon. Including the Groupon, we ended up paying about $175 total, including the "suggested" tip and drinks. I compare and contrast this to Paul Qui's prix fixe menu, which is $70/person ($140 for two). At Qui, you get truly haute cuisine from an inspired local chef in a hip location, a fun (non-depressing) atmosphere, clean floors, impeccable service, and one of the best meals (IMO) you can get in Austin. My spouse commented as we left that had we paid list prices for what we ate, it would have made for a very angry time. I think the owners of this restaurant wildly overestimate what their food and restaurant is worth. If you peruse their ala carte menu, a sampling of their prices includes $28.50 for Irish stew and chicken breast for $36.75. Seriously? $36.75 for ONE chicken breast? Not even a half chicken? You don't pay those kinds of prices at Michelin-starred restaurants in Manhattan, let alone Central Texas. To top it off, as other reviewers have commented, we, too, were "surprised" with the reminder to tip on the list price of the meal, not the Groupon cost. We received an itemized note on what the list price was of the meal, our add-ons (drinks) and a "suggested" tip based on that. I get that Grouponers sometimes "forget" to tip on the list price of their Groupon meals, but I found that to be tacky, tacky, tacky. It wouldn't have been so bad if we were tipping servers who were working for the restaurant, but we were being served by the owners themselves. Finally, the restaurant was pretty much empty when we went. The two other tables that were there that night were also on Groupons. Based on comments made by the chef and server, I got the distinct impression that the bulk of their business is Groupon-based. Given that their regular menu prices border on the ridiculous and laughable (almost $40 for a single chicken breast, people), I can't imagine that anyone would ever go to Emerald on anything but a Groupon. Even at the Groupon price, you'd be able to get a much better dining experience elsewhere in town, such as at Qui, noted above.

This is a very unique restaurant. It is owned by a sister and brother from Ireland. She was the waitress, he was the cook. It is very obvious that it is a passion for them, and they are committed to the restaurant for life. We just stopped in and that was fine but we will make a reservation next time. We had very good food. The steaks have yummy sauces and the onion soup was the best I have ever had! The waitress/owner was very sweet and did a great job of being friendly while letting us have a romantic evening by ourselves. And we were the only ones in the restaurant on a weekday night! (we liked the privacy) It is a very low volume sort of a place and you are given lots of attention as a result. The atmosphere is like a cozy Irish farm house, not fancy or modern, but warm and cozy. I highly recommend this if you want to get away from the kids, are tired of the usual dinner date options and do not mind the thought of private dining.

Our son gave us a Groupon for the "Chateaubriand & Lobster dinner" at this restaurant, and we had to really thank him for a wonderful evening! Inside the quaint cottage, we were transported to Ireland by the decor and the servers (in coordinated attire). The food - soup, salad, main entree, and dessert - was absolutely delicious, all of it! The beef was amazingly moist and tender, and even the carrots were yummy (and I don't really like carrots!). Family owned and operated, it was a unique experience that was truly enjoyable.

My husband and I were excited to try some authentic Irish food and loved the setting of this restaurant. Unfortunately we were not impressed with the food. It started with the bread, which didn't taste very good. I ordered a steak and requested it to be medium well. After a long wait for the entrée, my steak came out extremely rare. I brought this to the attention of our wait staff and she offered to cook it longer. Not impressed.

All of the other one star reviews are spot on. The sign out front is very worn and old and the landscaping around the restaurant is very overgrown. There is literally junk lying around the sides of the building so my husband and I thought it was going to be a little dive bar/restaurant. When we went in we felt like we were in a bad episode of the Twilight Zone. The restaurant is actually in an older home and we were greeted by a very pleasant woman, but dressed like 19th century Ireland and speaking to us like a kindergarden teacher would address her class. The decor is very worn, dirty and stained in many areas. When we were handed the menus, we went into sticker shock from what was expected from the look of the place. The food is WAY, WAY overpriced!! Like previously mentioned, the entrees start at $28 and go up from there which would be fine if the quality matched the prices, but this food should be no more than $8-$12 for what you get. It may have been much better years ago, but this place needs a MAJOR overhaul!! Someone needs to call Gordon Ramsey soon or I just don't see this place making it.

A few pictures of the Emerald during the daytime. Two abandoned cars, an abandoned boat, a falling apart shed (painted to look like a cottage), overgrown garden, and buildings in disrepair. It had a better day. You may not notice this when you come at night. On our last visit the inside had cobwebs, wallpaper that needs replacement a few decades ago, old chairs, and unpleasant smell. This review is not about the food, and I would point out that the service is very friendly. This is about the condition of the restaurant and grounds. It is less than half a mile from numerous other restaurants. To put it in perspective, it's down the road from a Starbucks.

The most amazing overall experience I've had in years. What a surprise! Five Star Food. Five Star Service. Five Star atmosphere. First time visit. Don't know how we have never heard of The Emerald Restaurant before. Their web site pictures hold true to the actual. Quaint, Small, Irish Cottage with only a handful of tables. You get your table for the entire evening. Relax. Take you time with dinner. You'll want to, as it all is THAT GOOD! Appetizers - crazy good. Salad with home made dressing was out of this world. Sauces on the different selections were some of the best I've ever had. All items served on beautiful Irish China. They came out with a crystal serving of sorbet to cleanse the pallet before the main course. Special Treat! I almost forgot. Freshly baked bread brought to the table still warm from the oven. Everything about The Emerald Restaurant was "Class". Would recommend for any occasion!

Extremely expensive and well worn spot. Went on a groupon and would definitely not go back

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful evening at this restaurant. The 2 sisters who are the waitresses are wonderful, friendly and very attentive. The atmosphere, food and warm hospitality really made we want to travel to Ireland! We've lived in Austin for 19 years and had never tried this restaurant... and we only live 10 minutes away. We used a Groupon offer for a Chateaubriand dinner for 2. It was beautifully presented with a bunch of roasted vegetables (all carved/served table side), potato soup, salad, bread, and great dessert (a $175 value). Their Irish coffee also rocks! The next Groupon offer will be in December. I'm definately going to purchase a couple for Christmas gifts!
Very unique/ a little strange and left feeling ripped off
I should have read the yelp reviews of the many people who had purchased a groupon for this place. I paid $69 for a groupon that was supposed to have a value of $175. I have dined at many fine dining restaurants, which I wouldn't even say this was and I don't believe that meal could really retail for $175,much more realistacly closer to the cost of the groupon. The service was VERY slow, we arrived at 8pm eventually got our dessert at 10:45pm! So although the value was poor and the service slow if you want a quirky dining experience you may well enjoy this restaurant as someone described it on a yelp, it had a feeling of dining in Alice in wonderland and I would agree with that description
