Take a break from the Barnes collection for a tasty lunch

By Jackie M |

My friend and I enjoyed relaxing over a tasty lunch while taking in the amazing Barnes Foundation collection. She has food restrictions and the waitress was very accommodating and arranged for substitutions. I enjoyed the salmon with couscous although the portion was on the small side. We split a scrumptious chocolate mouse with excellent coffee. The ambiance is very gracious with views of the outside garden where you can dine as well, weather permitting.

Perfect lunch before touring the museum

By Burdett P |

We ate a Saturday lunch here prior to a museum tour. The view of the garden makes this a beautiful setting. The waiter was exceptionally polite and helpful. Two of us ordered the chopped salad with salmon and one had the avocado toast. They had a nice wine pairing as well. Excellent food and excellent service.

Good salads

By Joie13 |

A nice small restaurant with a good selection of salads and a few main dishes (2 of the 3 were out by 2pm). Yummy breads included. Service was a bit erratic, but one of the assistants was very kind and attentive when my waiter was busy. A nice stop in between gallery viewing.

Delicious Food

Food was well prepared and presented. Service was great. We all enjoyed our dishes. Highly recommend.

Recommended without reservation BUT reservations recommemded!

By Kristea K |

Without reservation I can recommend this restaurant. The menu is terrific, the prices were reasonable, and the service a great. BUT.....you most certainly need reservations to secure a table. Do not trust the information if you are told otherwise by the museum staff. For example, we were told "Oh, you should not need reservations....it's a Wednesday." Guess what? Yes, you do! Because the restaurant is not very big, and it also allows outside guests, it gets very busy. It is easy to pass the wait time visiting the exhibits, but if your want to eat at a certain time, make reservations for sure. Outdoor dining (salads and sandwiches and a bar) and a coffee shop (great flat white!) are also available.

Elegant but pricey

By ScoopTraveler |

Pleasant views into the garden outside. Limited menu choices at inflated prices. Not much that is gluten free or dairy free. Tasty enough. Good service. Great ambiance.

Great food, but way overpriced

By Barry L |

We stopped in the garden for lunch. After a short wait, we were seated. The restaurant itself is lovely with a very nice view. The food was delicious, but the portions were very very small and the prices were very very high.even a bottled beer brand I am familiar with, which is $3 to $4 elsewhere, was $6. Adding to our experience was our server, who was simply terrible. We noticed other servers being much more attentive, so this is more of a management problem and that individual problem that could be easily solved with a pink slip.

Very good food in the Barnes mausoleum

By Andrew K |

The hostess greeted us by saying that there were large parties coming in, so she couldn't seat us unless we had a reservation. We had one, which seemed to annoy her. My wife's Mushroom Madame was fine, as was my Shrimp Louis -- I always like Thousand Islands dressing. I didn't realize until I sat at my laptop to write this review and looked at the bill that they forgot to charge me for my glass of wine -- no doubt our server was distracted by the two parties of eight that came in right after us. "Tranquil" was not the ambiance.

Great food and view

By Barbara B |

When visiting the Foundation, of course we decided to stop for lunch. The food was delicious, although quite pricey, but to be expected as all public attractions tend to be the same. We did not feel rushed, and that is important. There is outdoor seating, but the day was hot and humid, so indoors we stayed. However, the view of the garden was very nice.

Better than the museum.

By Robert W |

I am not that keen on being served in plastic, but the salads at the museum were quite wonderful. It made up for the disappointing presentation of the works of art.

LUXURIOUS DINING ROOM AT THE BARNES

By dh0414 |

A few weeks ago, my wife and I met some dear friends for a Sunday lunch. We treated ourselves to a lovely meal in a beautiful setting. The restaurant was designed by the same award-winning architects who designed the museum, Tod Williams and Billy Tsien. The high ceilings, wall of windows and beautifully grained wood of the panels along with a consistently minimal, modernist ensemble of the tables and place settings enhance our enjoyment. The food was very good--creative and well-served with fair portions for the moderate prices. Staff was attentive and professional. The room was nearly empty, so that added to the Zen-like quiet, shattered only by our banter and laughs. The menu is mostly salads with a choice of fish, chicken or beef along with locally sourced, interesting salad ingredients. Adding wine, desserts and hot beverages for all could easily push the bill rather high. For our post prandrial stroll, we took a quick spin through the Barnes' astounding collections and galleries. As the four of us were museum members, admission was free. The afternoon was a pleasurable, balanced experience, nurturing the body and soul. There's also a coffee shop near the gift shop that's fun, though pretty crowded and hectic, with fair prices and creative choices.

Great museum restaurant....

By DMarshall2014 |

Reservation is a must with the Berthe Morisot show until Jan. 14, 2019. Upon arrival we popped in and made one for 2 hours later. Great salads and sandwiches, you can even have a bottle of wine.

Great spot to have an outdoor lunch in a beautiful garden setting. If it gets too hot and sunny, they have large umbrellas that provide shade. The food and service are top notch and the prices are reasonable considering the location. With the drinks they serve these homemade chips that are just great. I had a chicken salad and BLT combo sandwich (see photo) that was wonderful while my wife had a simple BLT that was good, too. Our friends raved about their burgers. Our server was friendly and helpful but not intrusive.

Enjoy the Garden while you eat

By LLExplorer |

Wonderful restaurant to relax and enjoy a great lunch. We ate inside but had the benefit of viewing the lovely garden while we ate. The sandwiches and salads were delicious and the cost was very reasonable for a museum restaurant.

lunch

By Diedrasheart |

Great service , average pricing for the city in a musuem . Food was ok. did not blow our socks off ! I had falaefal ontop of a salad that was a grain based salad , falAefal was over cooked , brussel sprouts were also overcooked ! Husband got a burger , the main word we kept using was dry ! It was a small menu , seemed like there was something for everyone . The server was very knowledgeable and attentive . We thought the food would be better since its a Steven Star restauraunt .

Short menu but decent food

By BlueNWashington |

This restaurant is on the ground floor of the museum and was quite pleasant for lunch on a week day. You don't have to have a museum ticket to eat at the restaurant. Medium priced. Attentive service

Outstanding Food in Tranquil Setting

By TRVLtruth |

We loved the fresh, thoughtful food of this gem of a museum restaurant so much we ate there two days in a row on our latest trip to Philly. The setting is tranquil and sublime, the menu offers wonderful ingredients and a perfect balance of simple and complex. The carrot ginger soup was a real standout and something I could have weekly. The staff the first day (Sunday) was top notch and friendly - a fit host in black and a extremely professional server with a beard. The second day, (Monday) the hostess was so rude that unless we had dined there the first day, we would have just left and given up. At the wedding we were attending, two other local couples said they loved the food, but the hostess was so rude they would never go back. Maybe you need a new host. Small problem aside, don’t let the host detour you, and rush to this Philly find!

Limited Menu, but tasty choices

By efeldman112 |

The contemporary design of this small restaurant reflects the architecture of the Barnes Museum. The food was good, but the luncheon menu was limited. The salmon was perfectly cooked. The waiter was attentive.

Salad and Quiche!

By Prudence |

Although the gardens are dormant this time of year, the openness of the space remains lovely and very much connected to the outdoors. Service is excellent and the food is fresh and delicious. I chose the crustless quiche accompanied by garden greens and French wine followed by pumpkin cheesecake and coffee. Delightful.

Nice place to dine at the Barnes Museum

By EnjoyTraveling64 |

The restaurant has large glass windows overlooking a reflection pool There is indoor and outdoor seating. They use fresh ingredients and have burgers, crab cakes, soups, salads, soup, salmon, quiche, charcuterie among other dishes. It is a relaxing environment and the food was very good. Service was good. They are closed on Tuesday and only open until 3 pm so if you want to eat there, be sure to get there in time.

The art of lunch

By Steve K |

A good place to go for a light bite or a refreshing beverage before or after taking in the art on display at the Barnes. Nothing fancy here, but it is affordable and quite delicious.

Take a break

By Howie |

You'll need a break while visiting the Barnes, and The Garden Restaurant offers a good place to do that. The food and service is just fine, and the atmosphere is unpretentious. It's not as big as it should be, and the day we were there they were not taking reservations. We did put our name on the list and returned at the time suggested and we were seated. The food all looked good with some vegetarian options. You can fortify yourself to return to finish up your tour.

Excellent value, wonderful break from the collection

By Edward D |

Did have to wait 20 minutes, but it was well worth it. The environment was very pleasant; had an excellent bowl of Moroccan lentil soup for $8 and an excellent avocado toast for $7. What I particularly liked about the avocado toast was that it was more of a small cucumber and radish salad on top of spread avocado delicately seasoned with some oil and vinegar combination. The soup was rich and tasty. Finished off with a dessert; can't remember the name of it but it was a dense vanilla cake with raspberry sauce and whipped cream. My husband had the crab cakes, which were also excellent. Everything was prepared with extreme thoughtfulness; ingredients were perfect. The server was pleasant and knowledgeable about the menu and ingredients.

Good for what it is - nothing remarkable though

By Drayton36 |

It's a bit better than average but not four star, But a pleasant setting, quick service - and anyhow you don't want a big blow-out before you tackle the Barnes, I had crabcake and a very passable sauvignon blanc. My friends had Reuben sandwiches

Excellent museum restaurant with menu, space and service all on point.

By Susan S |

We made a reservation (good thing) because we were going to be at the Barnes at noon and we expected to be hungry after looking at all the art. Correct. The room was just lovely with good light (sometimes museums bury their restaurants in places with no natural light) The menu offered options for picky and/or vegetarian eaters. I had crab cakes and my friend had salmon. good sized portions and perfectly prepared food with some nice sides and presentation. Our waiter was attentive and refilled my iced tea without being asked.

Need More Cleaning of Facilities

By njacacia2017 |

My husband and I recently joined as members and visited for the first time this past Sunday. We went to the restaurant a few minutes after it opened at 11. I had the chef's salad with chicken, my husband had the breakfast sandwich. All cafeteria style. The food was good, but the cleanliness left something to be desired. My blouse kept sticking to something on the table-eeww. People were clearing their own tables and I never saw one table being cleaned , let alone disinfected. Appearing to be short staffed, I observed only one young lady at the cash register who took the order, rang it up, and then brought it over to our table when it was ready. Substandard for any restaurant, but especially the Barnes, where everything else that day was top notch.

Lovely surroundings and delicious food.

By riri-70 |

We ate in the garden and had delicious vegetarian meals for lunch. Indoor seating is also available.

Convenient for lunch

By AYL038 |

There are not many places to eat in the area immediately around the Barnes, so it's nice that the museum's restaurant is good and very pleasant.

Charcuterie, rosé and a former beau

By samantha p |

The architecture of the Barnes Foundation conveys the sense of being outside while inside. This museum restaurant is no different, with wide windows to sight others on the veranda, the high ceilings and the minimalist tables and chairs. The menu while not extensive had exactly what I wanted to share with a former beau. One who still harbored sentiments and memories of college days. We shared a charcuterie, the platter, was ideal for 2, the selection not the most interesting but was appetizing. There were sandwiches and hardier and more singular fare. The wines were well priced and portions of carafs up to you. The lighting at noon is bright, not sharp, the noise is a buzz, not deafening nor punctuated by an infant crying or cranky children. They were there, but the parents may have either poured Benedryl in their drinks or were actually good parents. Service attentive that lunch while not harried nor pushy. No over sell, no rush. It is not a rush type place so go with that pace. I'd go back gladly to this restaurant. I can see spending a leisurely afternoon with a book there if they allowed.

Sophisticated Menu for a Museum

By AnnRW305 |

The food was really great, but what made the experience memorable was Jess. She helped us navigate a rather surprisingly fancy menu. Lots of vegetarian options. I swapped fries for roasted green beans to make my Croque Provincal (that's elaborate talk meaning grilled cheese) a more healthy option. Jess's knowledgeable and warm guidance accounts for an entire level of my rating.

Very nice art museum restaurant

By TripPhotographer52 |

We enjoyed the atmosphere. There was a short wait. We had wine and the Barnes chopped salad with salmon and also a special salad with romaine lettuce, a small filet and blue cheese dressing. The food and service was very good. I recommend it.

The Garden Restaurant, a lovely, pleasing eatery

By Courtney M |

The three of us consumed three unique and delicious meals at a wonderful destination of a restaurant located inside the Barnes collection in Philadelphia. Our first course was a well-seasoned lentil soup. One of us had an avacado toast with arugula and sliced radishes. The 3rd person had no first course but happily feasted on ours. The entrees were pumpkin pancakes with pecans, grilled salmon and a croque madame. All were sensational!

Great food

By HelenL457 |

Lovely sitting outside for lunch. We enjoyed everything. Our waitress was very busy, still she managed lunch with grace.

Delicious

By islandewe |

We had a delicious lunch in a lovely setting. Staff was very friendly, yet professional. Husband loved his chicken BLT with potatoes and I felt the same about my spinach/kale salad and fries.

Good restaurant

By HardGrader |

Good restaurant by any standard. Outstanding for a museum restaurant. Try the crab cakes. The cheese course was generous and had excellent choices.

Saturday Day Trip

By Ann D |

Wow! What a pleasant surprise. The venue is airy and comfortable. The food was excellent as was the service. I just can’t say enough good things about it.

Could do so much better

By Gill O |

Considering the size of the Barnes and the amount of people passing through, this restaurant is far too small. Could easily double the size without any trouble. The food is just ok, a little too fussy for our tastes. I was disappointed.

Art lover

By uffelmansuz |

Pretty restaurant with large windows overlooking lots of green. Very good food. We had lunch/brunch with omelette, burgers, fish and a vegan dish. Obviously a perfect location when visiting The Barnes. Very pleasant servers.

Slow, expensive, and limited

By John N |

Slow service, limited menu, and expensive for what you receive but they obviously have a monopoly on food service so they don't have to care. Indifferent service. We found practically nothing of interest on the menu for children. For only the third time in my life, I did not leave a tip. Enter with low expectations and you will not be as disappointed.

Delightful Surprise

By Dr-Zach |

Who would think that a restaurant in a museum would have very good food and a lovely atmosphere to boot. If you have not tried it visit the Barnes Foundation for a day of art appreciation and then enoy a lunch at Barnes. We had the crab cakes and they were simply sensational - not good - but great. Nice wine selection and great service. Michelle served us on her first day and it seemed like she had been there forever. Renoir would be proud.

Nice place for lunch and a break from touring the art galleries.

By LovesFrance2010 |

Not a huge menu, but a decent variety, nicely prepared and good service. Reservations are a good idea, or expect to put your name on a waiting list. I can recommend the grilled cheese with bacon.

Food which deserves the place :)

By Explore581231 |

It is not a typical museum lunch cafe but an elegant and quite expensive restaurant. Plan accordingly and you won't be disappointed. We had a great lunch there. The menu is carefully selected - as it should be in a good restaurant - and offers an excellent choice of very unique cuisine. Every dish we had was no less but excellent.

Give Yourself a Treat!!

By robertazweifler |

Absolutely love it. We have been there many times and it is always the place we take visiting friends and relatives for lunch or brunch. The service could not be better. The setting is lovely, restful with a beautiful view of a garden. The food is all freshly made, creative and delicious. I think the prices are more than fair, considering what you are getting - and a steal compared to Manhattan. We took friends there today and we will be back in 2 weeks to host other friends.

Creative food in a comfortable, convenient location

By Lynn M |

When we visited the Barnes, we ate lunch at the Garden Restaurant. We had different offerings but both had deliciously and creatively prepared food using fresh and local ingredients. My food choice was so huge that I took mine home for another meal. Desserts were so inviting that even though I was full I ordered a pastry filled with berries and cream. Service is spot-on, food is creative and deliciously prepared, location is convenient, and the coffee is excellent. You will not be disappointed.

Very pleasant restaurant/cafe at the Barnes Foundation

By John_Schunhoff |

Very pleasant lunch at the Barnes Foundation. We needed a break to rest our feet and our minds, which were on overload from the paintings.

Very good food but poor service

By Happytraveler87 |

We were visiting the Barnes and decided to have lunch in their Garden Restaurant. It started off poorly, with the server making a smart comment when we were seated, and didn't improve. The food was excellent and reasonably priced but the service was poor. The food was slow coming and the server did not check on us in the interim. I sat for a long time with an empty water glass while we were waiting for our food, until the woman who had seated us walked by and saw it and went to get the pitcher to fill it. The server brought a side dish that one of our guests had specifically asked her not to bring - which of course, resulted in wasted food. We felt that the quality of the restaurant is not up to the rest of the Foundation.

Not so special

By Kessler F |

I don't expect a lot from a museum restaurant, and this one went out of its way to not even meet that standard. Service was dismally poor. We had to remind the waitstaff that we might want a drink with lunch. Our request for bread and tea took at least 20 minutes. We asked at least twice and were told your waitperson is "on her way." When she finally arrived she complained that there were only two waitpersons for the restaurant, although we could count 4 easily. The portions are very small for the price and the only thing that was done quickly was clearing our plates. There are lots of interesting restaurants in the area and it would be smarter to visit one. The museum is wonderful - the restaurant no so much.

Strange occurrence...

By delp0rt |

So my wife and I have been members of the Barnes since before the move from Merion. We had eaten in the restaurant many times... We love the cheese and meat plates combined with a glass of champagne it is a true treat. So as far as the food we have never been disappointed and for the most part have loved every experience, but there is always that one time that kills it. We were visiting the foundation and decided to stop in for a bite. The place was empty and asked to be seated but the window. The hostess told us that the window was reserved for parties of four. The place was empty and it made not sense... I did not want to make a fuss and decided to sit anyway. We ordered and about five minutes later a young man and a young woman came in and sat next to us... at a seat by the window. I asked the waitress why they had been seated there as they were a party of two. She was embarrassed and said she would go find the manager to explain... We watched this party of two get their drinks and then food and we waited and waited for an explanation. Eventually after asking the waitress a second time the manager came over and told us that this man was the President of the foundation and his companion was someone who I forgot who she was... but I was incensed needless to say... If you make rules, the President of the organization should be the example, not the exception... I was ready to rip up my membership cards and never come back... Well I have not been back the the restaurant and will never go back. I want to rate this fairly... the place is a delightful experience, good food, a bit pricy, but this experience, I will never get over. so it is a negative 100 for this moment... and a +five for the place...

Elegant, Relaxing, Excellent Food!

By Frann s |

Loved the ambiance and the food selections for brunch! I had the grilled romaine salad with a delicious dressing and my companion had eggs. Food was as advertised, and the wait staff might have been a touch more attentive. I would definitely go back.

Enjoy Food, Service, Locale

By JohnWD38 |

It's a fine place to take a break from touring the Barnes' collection. The menu is not large, but the dishes are very good and reasonably priced and the service is friendly. Add in a good selection of wines and beers. The dining room is very comfortable, but best of all is to have good weather and enjoy dining in the garden.

Lovely Outdoor Dining

By ALibSanFrancisco |

Beautiful outdoor dining area, delicious food, and friendly servers. I am always a little wary of museum restaurants, but I was pleasantly surprised.

Surprised at bad reviews

By butterfly58 |

Wow, we have nothing but good things to say about this place. We were there taking a break from all the Renoirs and it really hit the spot for us. It was very hot outside, so the cool salads and other plates on the menu appealed to us. We can recommend the charcouterie plate and particularly the quinoa salad (best we've ever had) and roasted stuffed eggplant. Lots of good sourdough and raisin bread.

Better then trying to find something close by

By John Napurano |

What a surprise to enjoy the food and a pleasant setting. After walking the museum it was a treat to discover this restaurant and enjoy a delightful lunch.

Lovely food, ambiance, service

By Edward C |

Imaginative, nicely plated food. Peaceful environment, in our case overlooking a snow-covered garden. Superb, not over-loud music. Polite service. We did have to ask for bread.

Limited menu but well prepared

By Dr. Bob |

As far as museums restaurants are concerned, I found the limited menu offered well-prepared eats including salads and finger food. The setting outside was very pleasant and the wait staff attentive. Given the location of the museum and the time spent viewing its collections, recharging one's batteries in this restaurant appears to be the only viable option, if time and the hassle of getting around to another eatery are concerns.

Great meal and great location.

By tom |

Wife and I had lunch here on a rainy afternoon. Thoroughly enjoyed it. We were originally seated at a table with one side facing a wall. Our request to move to a table by the window was graciously granted even though the only available table was a four top. Food was excellent as was the wine. Our server was attentive and cheerful. All in all a very pleasant experience.

Interesting but clustered and expensive.

By Willowtree123 |

Well I finally made it one Sunday to the new relocated collection. First thing to note is that if you don't buy a ticket in advance for a specific time you'll need to buy a special. In this case a whopping $45. The collection is interesting and eclectic. The building is fantastic. However the art is crammed in and loses it impact.

Good food at a good price

By DCEuropa |

Surprisingly fresh food, such as heirloom tomatoes for example, at relatively affordable prices: $23 gets you a perfect portion of grilled chicken or steak, along with 2 heaping servings of salads/sides of your choice. I had the fresh heirloom tomato slices with mozzarella, and grilled eggplant as my second side dish, both excellent. Service is prompt and joyful.

A Wonderful Finale for a Day of Fine Art

By Robert V |

Each fall, my wife and I travel to Philadelphia to take in the city’s attractions and dine in some of its finest restaurants. Due to the ongoing construction projects at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the fine arts component of our trips have brought us to the Barnes Collection over the past few years. After a splendid docent-led tour (thank you Kim Campbell!) of the Barnes Collection, we once again enjoyed a leisurely luncheon at the museum’s Garden Restaurant. Our meal began with bottles of Appalachian White Birch Beer and a Cheese Board with a sampling of local cheese, fig jam, grilled bread, lavender honey and marcona almonds. I had the Baby Greens Salad (as I didn’t expect to see anything remotely healthy at the concessions stands of Citizens Bank Park later that evening) and a “Barnes Burger” served with cheddar, grilled red onion, bread & butter pickles, lettuce and bacon. My wife enjoyed her salad with crab cakes. We also shared a wonderful Buttermilk Biscuit with orange marmalade butter. Our meal concluded with a generous slice of Carrot Cake with cream cheese frosting, pecans and cinnamon. I would strongly recommend that visitors to the Barnes Collection plan their visits well in advance to reserve tickets on-line for the museum’s docent-led tours and to also make reservations for a table at The Garden Restaurant following the conclusion of your tour.

part of the experience....

By josyanmadiskaff |

nice , warm, friendly....and good food. very much like the Foundation. should be part of the visit. recommended

Excellent food with original flavor combinations.

By Arlene S |

We stopped for lunch after our visit to the museum and found it incredible. The food was excellent and the service superb.

Mostly salads......

By Ann S |

Disappointing menu-no sandwiches available.Mostly salads. You get to choose three or four salad scoops. The Barnes salad was good-sorry I didn't just get a plate of that.Other options were cold grilled eggplant and cold carrots.Would have preferred a sandwich but they were only available at the Coffee Bar which had no comfortable seating.

Nice atmosphere, slow service

By Ernie B |

Visited the Barnes Foundation today with family members. After a morning in the galleries we decided to have lunch in their dining room. Interestingly, it didn't open until exactly noontime, even though a line formed by 11:45. Nice menu of salads and sandwiches. I had a Reuben, my guests enjoyed quiche of the day. The portions were huge, accounting for the slightly high price. My disappointment was in their selection of beers. The menu emphasized "craft beers" and certainly there are many brewed in Pennsylvania. But their selections were bottled beers from the west coast with no link to local Brewers at all. Service was very polite but slow. Tab for 3 persons, including 2 beers came to $58.

Lovely lunch spot at the Barnes

By Dobbstraveler |

Although it is a temporary location for this Café while the permanent one is undergoing renovations, it is lovely and offers a welcome break from viewing art in the galleries upstairs. The menu is unusual but the waitress explained how it works. We each had the soup of the day, a Minestrone, which was quite good. We each ordered a selection of the salads listed, three for me (small plate) and four (large plate) for my husband. With soup and bread, it was a good lunch. There are also main dishes on the menu, each of which comes with a couple of salads (of your choice) on the side. We resisted having dessert.

Good but slow

By DEBarbie |

What I liked was that the food was good. Kind of expensive but you are in the big city and convenience really matters. $14 for quiche and $11 for one house white wine steep but not a deal breaker. Waiter got slammed. They need more waiters, we wanted to get in and out but still have a nice lunch. 45 min took too long. We had to wave him down for everything. Also they wont seat incomplete parties. Aesthetics of the restaurant very nice. Felt upscale. You can eat outside on nice days. It works but I'm sure it will be tweaked for the future.

Better than your average museum restaurant

By Global-Villagerr |

The Barnes Foundation art collection is so large and varied, that a break for food is essential. This small, but well appointed modern restaurant is located in the building, but outside the gallery wing of the museum. The menu is not huge, but wisely focuses on items that can be freshly prepared and delivered with some speed, so you can get back into the gallery. Bar service is also available. Food delivery is quick enough, but staff is often hard to find. Twice we had to go up to the bar to ask the chef (open kitchen) for salt and for the check. The menu contains luncheon standards like Salad Nicoise and Cranberry Chicken Salad on a croissant. But all was tasty and well presented. Price is about average for a museum restaurant, which is to say on the expensive side. But on the lower level of the museum, there is a coffee bar that serves snacks and sandwiches, so there is a cheaper choice. And when you have a lot of museum to cover, you don't want to waste time going out to look for food when you really just want to get back into the the gallery. First come, first served restaurant; no reservations.

Excellent for lunch

By RubyCavalier |

Our plan was to eat here for the convenience, not so much for the food. We were delightfully surprised to have one of our best meals here during our visit. The food was very fresh. The falafel sandwich was one of the best that I have had in sometime. My guest had the roast organic chicken breast, perfectly cooked with a wonderful sauce. The meal was topped off with a very enjoyable piece of chocolate cake. Perfect and helpful service provided by our waiter Lou. I highly recommend this restaurant, whether going to the Barnes Museum or just being in the vicinity (you can eat here without paying the museum entrance fee).

Reservation suggested

By Janou J |

We couldn't get into the Barnes; it was sold out. We opted to have lunch at the Garden restaurant. They fit us in. Fortunately, we had a corner. The acoustics here make table conversation very difficult with all of the hard surfaces. Considering the mean age of the clientele, most were speaking loudly to compensate for the acoustics. FOOD - WOW! Love their salads! We were making notes on the ingredients and combinations to take home. Watercress, blueberries, sliced almonds was tasty. The roasted green beans with nuts and hens-of-the-woods mushrooms was a new experience that I want to try at home, if I can ever find these unique mushrooms. We were more impressed with the side salads served with the entrées than the entrées themselves. The quiche lorraine and the salmon with pesto were fine; the salads just way outshined the main them. SERVICE - on point and effiicient without being obtrusive PRICING - about 25-30 per person without wine or champagne The best lunch we had in Philadelphia this weekend...

Garden Restaurant at the Barnes --- Perfect Fit with Day of Art

By ArtsyGalBaltimore |

Enjoy a pleasant lunch before or after your visit to the Barnes Museum. Well-lit, comfortable seating, low noise level in an artistic setting. Menu choices ample and server explains favorites. Chose a cheese grill with frites. Just right for a light lunch.

Outdoor lunch at the Garden Restaurant at the Barnes Museum.

By Jim K |

We took advantage of a perfect weather day to eat lunch outdoors. Sat under the red umbrellas. The brunch menu offered a nice selection varying from an egg dish to salmon. First courses and extras offered too. A nice selection of wines. I had the chicken salad BLT on toasted whole grain with roasted asparagus on the side. For desert I had the flour-less chocolote cake. The patio is surrounded by plants and a man made pond. Our server Gabriella was very nice and offered the perfect amount of talking, not being too intrusive but making us feel welcomed. She even told us to look for the bunny family which occasionally makes an apperance in the restaurant's garden like setting.

Exceptional for a museum restaurant

By Carole K |

Perfectly located, varied menu, quite attractive environment. Desserts were a particular favorite. The best way to "break away" from viewing the paintings and start again.

Delicious food

By Nancy G |

We came here for lunch on a Friday. We ordered the Caesar salad with shrimp and the salmon and egg salad on bread. The salmon was good, but the star of the show was the Caesar with shrimp. It was a huge portion with large shrimp. It beats Parc’s shrimp salad hands down. I had a delicious glass of Chardonnay with lunch. Our server , Morgan, was lovely and helpful. We’ll be back.

Impressive but confusing

By levelgreenithaca |

Definitely worth a visit, at least once. You have to make reservations for a day and time. It's worth the $20 for valet parking, since the Museum is in the middle of downtown Philadelphia. Really good coffee bar and lovely garden restaurant. The collection rooms are overwhelming: where a normal museum might hang three paintings, the Barnes will have ten on one wall, each one exquisite and all resonating with a theme. But I actually got dizzy and had to leave. Read up on the "Barnes Collection" before you go, the history is fascinating.

OK but won't return

By Denny R |

Service was not that great. No bread plates and the table next to us did. Ordered salad with asparagus and it came with broccoli. When pointed out to server was told asparagus was a misprint on the menu and she forgot to tell us. She's didn't offer us anything to exchange. The pre made salads had way too much dressing on for our tastes. They were too wet. Saw the manager on the way out and told him, he apologized and said all his staff were suppose to inform customers about the misprint, then I told him I heard another table order the same asparagus salad and a different server also said nothing to the clients. He offered nothing to credit or compensate.

Lovely atmosphere and beautiful room

By SuzyLaidlaw |

Food was great, company was great, and views out the windows were extraordinary. How nice to be able stop and take a rest before going back to the extraordinary collection.

Slow and pricey

By rcfet |

We wanted to like this restaurant as it is so convenient when visiting the museum. However the service was slow and sporadic and the food just average. The setting is attractive and the menu certainly looks interesting. The food was nicely presented but seemed bland and was pricey even for a museum restaurant.

Decent food but have had much better in other museum cafes

By laura g |

Service once we were finally seated was very good. Food was good and satisfying. The homemade chips were quite a treat. Nice view of the gardens outside. It was snowing and just beautiful. Satisfying experience.

Nice enough....

By cke3 |

After nearly five hours at the Barnes, with noon "coffee break" downstairs, we came to the restaurant for a (very) late lunch on a Saturday. Quiet, beautifully curated surrounding...looking out a window wall into a walled garden. Even the cutlery and glassware seemed to be chosen with care. Friendly, efficient staff. Now...the food. A little odd. A crustless quiche which resembled a quiche only in shape...the texture had none of the creaminess one expects..it was more like pale green beaten egg (mostly whites) with perhaps a tablespoon of the kale & spinach advertised..and not so much as a whisper of feta... The texture was sort of like a gelatinized mousse...but warm. As I said, odd. Nice flavor, tho, and the salad leaves were well dressed, if seasoned anaemically. Burger also was less than great...at a price point that called for excellence. Good house wines. The jewel of the meal was their hot apple pie (on a cold wintry day) .....really a crumble...topped with good ice cream. Somebody peeled, sliced, spiced and baked those delicious apples...thank you Barnes for springing for a pastry chef when so few restaurants will. In all a reasonable experience for museum dining. Hopefully the menu will continue to evolve....

Serene spot for lunch

By sgbslo |

We took a break from looking at the incredible art collection to have lunch here. They start you off with some delicious house-made potato chips which are addictive. The food was good and nicely presented. Our server was pleasant.

Pretentiously Pricey

By 7469moog |

While the restaurant in convenient if visiting the Barnes collection, eat before or after visiting. The menu has some nice selections [cream of mushroom soup, quiche, baked apple desert], but totally over-priced. The service is sporadic and poor, the tables and chairs are what you would find in a typical cafe, the garden is hardly a garden. I do not recommend eating here.

Love the salads!

By Susan M |

If you like unique salads, this is the place for you. You can order 3 or 4 salads from their menu and they give you a generous scoop of each one. Everything was absolutely delicious. I tried the kale, the quinoa, and roasted vegetable salads and loved them all (and I didn't even think I liked kale!).

Delicious lunch at the Barnes

By PHLNarb |

Delicious selections of salads, yummy briead and sparkling water. It's not inexpensive but it is delicious.

Beautiful setting with excellent light fare

By nscheuer |

We enjoyed our lunch. It was creative and handsomely presented. The service was attentive. The restaurant overlooks their outdoor cafe which is set in the Barnes Foundations park-like setting.

Eating at The Barnes Foundation

By Frank Irizarry |

The newly opened Barnes Foundation Musuem in Philly has a lovely if pricey restuartnt called the Garden Restuarant because it overlooks the garden (which of course if quite barren during the winter). We had lunch in the lovely modern room adorned with giant tapestries (see picture). I had the chicken salad on a croissant and Maria had the turkey blt, bothe of which were delicious and generously proportioned. We sy quite a few ladies who lunch having the salmon over a bed of lentials which also looked appetizing. There farm to table tasting plates (vegan and non) avaialable as well. The menu changes seaonally so check it out at the Barnes Foundation site.

Tasty food in a quiet setting

By Henry B |

My wife and I stopped here for lunch before going into the Barnes Collection. While limited, the menu has imaginative items (like the deconstructed deviled egg with smoked salmon) as well as stand-bys (hamburger-1/2 pound cooked to order). A little pricey but not out of line for nice dining in other museums.

Love this restaurant

By bebeAnnArbor_MI |

We had brunch during a visit to the Barnes and totally enjoyed our food. It was creative, super fresh and cooked perfectly. We tried the frittata with crab and the crab cake sandwich, both of which were delicious. Portions were large, so go hungry! The service was excellent and I appreciated the birthday glass of sparkling wine.

Perfect spot for lunch!

By Bi-coaster |

Lovely spot inside for lunch. Addictive potato chips and great salads! Service was great and we got several refills on the chips.

Excellent food at an excellent museum

By sonnecj |

We all enjoyed a delicious lunch here after being blown away by the first half of our visit to the Barnes Foundation.

Lovely Surprise!

By annarc6 |

The food in the cafe is very different and very delicious. The day we went, they had six salads. The server encouraged us to go to the window and look at them before deciding which three we wanted. And we changed our minds. They are beautiful to look at and even better to taste! For lunch it is a little pricey, but it is worth it!

Lovely Lunch

By Barbara S S |

The environment was lovely. It was very pretty. It was relaxing because you could actually hear your friend talk. The food was well prepared and very tasty.

Good Food but rather Expensive

By Metrotorrance |

The Garden Restaurant at the Barnes Foundation Museum has good food; but rather on the expensive side. They have a small menu mainly salads, sandwiches and drinks. If you want hamburgers or hot dogs, this would not be the place for you.

A culinary rip-off; you pay for a view/convenience

By trc325 |

The menu is extremely limited; everything is cold and brought on-site. They don't even have soups! You feel unsatisfied all-throughout. Same feeling as buying a snack-box on a flight: you buy it because there's nothing else and you are still hungry afterwards and craving for a meal. The kale salad was overwhelming and drenched in a bitter dressing; I don't think I'll ever eat kale again. All in all, extremely expensive. The experience was as flat as the "sparkling" water served. Would never go again.

Lunch time

By davide79_12 |

One of the best Museum restaurant ,I have had lunch at over the years. I would rate it very highly. The food and service were perfect. Lovely fresh salads and my partner enjoyed his soup .All wash down with a lovely light malbec.

Nice Break For Foundation Visitors

By relaxandread |

Sit-down service in a modern glass-walled room with a garden view. Food was tasty (several main course and salad options), and the service was attentive.

Always Satisfying

By Dianne W |

Whenever we visit the Barnes, we skip the snacks in the lower level and opt to dine in the Garden with views of the Barnes' landscaping. Three story windows and contemporary furnishings. Limited but a perfect menu for soup, a salad or unusual entree. Great servers. Open when museum is open and that includes first fridays jazz evenings.

Terrific Chef!

By annarc6 |

Very creative menu with tasty foods in each category . Complimentary appetizer of exceptional chips. Excellent service. It was raining or we would have eaten outside, but our server gave us a perfect table by a stream overlooking the gardens. A lovely place to take a break as you enjoy the amazing Barnes!

Really good food

By zebragorda |

Not the usual museum lunch offerings. Really good food at reasonable p[rices We were pleasantly surprised.

Fabulous Museum Food

By Johnji |

Our wedding party agreed to a reunion of sorts in Philadelphia several years after the wedding. On the first day we decided to visit the Barnes Foundation collections on Benjamin Franklin Parkway and meet for lunch at the museum’s Garden Restaurant before we toured the galleries. We were not disappointed. The food, ambience and service were all stellar. The four of us had a mixture of the salads, soup and hot entrees. Everyone was pleased and also opted to share a dessert of flavorful sorbets. I want to really commend the friendly staff who took a genuine interest in our anniversary. A good reason for any of us to want to return to the Barnes.

Good food in a pleasant setting

By Bi-coaster |

The crab cakes served with a few greens and grainy mustard were excellent! One of our group also enjoyed the hot smoked salmon. Prices are reasonable and portions on the modest size, but fine for us. Service was slow as there seemed to be only one waiter working and, we observed several dining staff just standing around idly. So go for the food and the light and airy dining room, but don't expect to eat and run!

Lovely light lunch

By mdtraveller2016 |

The Garden at the Barnes offers a wonderful salad plate that allows you to choose from two or three different salads. The day I was there the choices included a chopped salad, eggplant, a cucumber salad, a tomato salad, a bean salad, and a kale salad. It was a great lunch choice and very reasonably priced.

Large portions with an interesting menu

By Bill B |

After spending a couple of hours in the museum, we decided to take a break and have lunch right in the building. As it turned out, this was a great idea. The food is delicious and the atmosphere is relaxing. If you want to eat while visiting the Barnes, make a reservation so you can get a window table.

Worth the Wait

By misspNewJersey |

Learn from our mistake - make reservations. Why we did not I can not say but we quickly found out that indeed reservations were necessary even on a weekday. We waited about an hour using the time to view another wonderful gallery. The restaurant is small which may be part of why people wait. The server was very professional and brought coffee quickly as requested. Lunch was very good - tasty. The chickpea falafel was made fresh along with excellent fries. Go for the incredible art and enjoy a great meal.

Great Luncheon Spot

By HappyTraveler4248 |

We had lunch Memorial Day at the Garden Restaurant at the Barnes Museum in a very lovely indoor/outdoor area. Our food was delicious, the waiter was great, and the ambiance was special. It is a wonderful way to break up your visit to the museum. They also have a coffee area where one can get coffee and snack while waiting for the museum to open in the morning. Everything is thoughtfully done.

Nice

By PAULO R |

The menu don't have many options but you might choose a delicious bread with cream cheese or shrimp with vegetables

The food and service did not match the setting or the prices.

By Susan S |

The restaurant at the Barnes should be better. Our bill was $60 for two lunches and iced tea and sparkling water. We both ordered the salmon entree which came with 2 sides. I asked the waitress (who was loaded with attitude) and she said the salmon was cooked "medium" Great. I like medium. Both salmon lunches came very well done. Firm and hard as well as tiny. Then the bread man came over and offered raisin bread OR a bagette. I asked for one of each and received a very thin slice of a tasteless baguette along with a small piece of raisin bread. really? Could you spare it? The Barnes is a wonderful art museum...with both permanent and traveling collections. The restaurant is very beautiful with a wall of glass facing a garden. The $60 for 2 lunches could be better.

Lunch among Barnes treasures

By Elisabeth B |

Although the season is changing and the beautiful outdoor garden patio of the Barnes’ Garden Restaurant is now closed for the season, the open and spacious decor of the indoor restaurant still invites sunshine through its grand windows and keeps the nearby city noise under wrap. I stopped there for an early lunch the other day and enjoyed both the menu selections, the friendly staff and an appreciation for the reflection of the careful design of the Barnes exhibition space in that of the Garden Restaurant. My lunch was delicious. I chose the small but generous salad plate that was well seasoned and could easily have served two. Decorative features of the restaurant that instantly catch your eye are the felt tapestries on two walls that recall the noise-absorbing hand-crafted panels in the Barnes’ entrance hall. The tapestries in the Garden Restaurant serve a decorative purpose and were created by the Dutch artist Claudy Yongstra who used wool sheard from her own sheep on Dutch meadows and colored it with natural plant dyes that had their origin in the long ago Middle Ages. It is an impressive achievement created for our modern times. Enjoy!

Good food, but good luck finding a place to sit

By Wanderlist777 |

The server was very gracious, and food was delicious, but the set-up for this cafe is so disorganized! The server had to check in back for items several times, and since there is very little seating (for the high demand) lots of folks juggled plates awkwardly on their laps. Not exactly relaxing--or in any way complementing the experience of the amazing gallery. Disappointing.

Pretentious but convenient

By el13207 |

I would recommend this restaurant only if one is visiting the extraordinary Barnes Museum and needs a convenient lunch spot. We were seated at a communal table with high seats because regular tables with regular seats were unavailable for at least 10 minutes and we were starving after several hours in the museum. The seats were impossible to move in and out, making for uncomfortable transitions (my companion had to ask a waiter to help her scoot her chair in!) The menu is pretentious, with vague menu descriptions - impossible to tell if something was a salad or a sandwich, for example. My BLT chopped salad had an impressive molded presentation and was quite tasty with large chunks of blue cheese, chopped romaine, tomatoes and a tasty dressing - but suffered in my opinion from cubes of fatty pork belly instead of crisp bacon which is what I expected. No bread offered. No drink menu offered. No dessert menu offered. Not inexpensive but then museum restaurants never are. Service adequate but curt. We live 3000 miles away and thus are unlikely to return, but I wouldn't return anyway if I knew of a convenient alternative. The restaurant is lovely but poorly designed and not very customer-centric.

Delightful space

By Robert S |

This is the full restaurant at the Barnes Foundation. It is a spare and attractive setting looking out at a garden. The staff are very nice. We were very happy with our lunch. The quality and preparation are top notch. They offer three entrees which come with two salads. The salads are wonderful. You can also have a combo of salads. They also offer beers and wines. A trip to the Barnes can be a day long experience. We recommend dining at here between the 2nd and 3rd floor.

Shrimp, mmm!

By US2Europe |

Our family group of three adults enjoyed a leisurely lunch at the Barnes. Great bread choices, and we all picked the shrimp lunch with different salad pairings. Delicious.

A Fantastic Place for Lunch!

By lee457918 |

We sat outside in the garden (they also have seats inside) and had an amazing lunch. The quality of the ingredients and the level of preparation was excellent. The service was outstanding too. It was perhaps the best lunch on the entire 6.5 week vacation. Highly recommended.

Quiet Lunch at the Barnes

By Susan W |

Although the menu is limited, there were enough selections. The olives were very reminiscent of ones we shared in Paris. The quiche and salad were exceptional and I would suggest the crab cake without the bread, as it made it way too much to eat for lunch.

Good way to start the museum visit

By Mandy D |

We arrived at the museum starving, and decided to get some food here before heading to the galleries. The menu is very brief, with entrees about $10 to $15. I got the chicken mole quesadillas and my husband got the flatbread of the day, which was margherita. My quesadillas were very good and also filling, and the flatbread was okay but had a bit too much olive oil. We were definitely more able to appreciate the art when our need for food was satisfied.

Excellent but limited menu

By Alice S |

Shared a sandwich and cookie with a coffee (as I remember it) while sitting with a lovely view of an atrium sort of with a tree and good lighting.

Very Good

By SandBAtlanta |

A beautiful space! Our server was very professional and timely. Food was great. A very sophisticated experience. I had soup, my husband had crab cakes - delicious! I also appreciate that they offered non alcoholic cocktails :) Well done!

Nice compliment to the Barnes

By 671paul_j671 |

Consider having lunch here when you visit the collection. We decided to try it and were not disappointed. There was no line on the Friday afternoon when we were at the museum. We are salad-eaters and the menu had a wide variety of interesting salad selections. The service was good and relatively fast. Outdoor dining appears to be available when the weather gets warmer. Definitely the equal of other restaurants in the area and did not have to find parking again. The decor is very trendy as well. I recommend it.

A nice place to take lunch in the Museum.

By Ryewit |

Clearly new with mixed results. My wife's crab cake was all crab, virtually no filler. Although the menu says "cakes" you only get one, about the size of a 6 oz. hamburger. I had the salad Nicoise. The tuna was fresle rare in the middle and there was a good amount of it. But the salad was heaped with lettuce and the dressing was quit oily resulting in limp greens. Rather than having each item at a separate location on the plate, it was more tossed salad Nicoise, than a proper Nicoise. They have wines and beer, so one can relax.

Varied menu of items suitable for lunch or even dinner.

By wanderlust2NewYork |

This restaurant offered choices of both lunch-type foods and more substantial entrees. Be advised, the chopped salad is huge!!! The crab fondue was absolutely delicious and could make a lunch for one or appy for 2-3.

Lovely setting but food was average at best

By Trup |

Even though we had reservations we could not be seated for 20-25 minutes after the appointed time. Hard to justify or excuse that. The setting is lovely and the wait staff was prompt and efficient. That being said, there was nothing that made the food seem special -- not bad, but no better than average.

Nice setting, good food, slightly pricey, and "painful" service

By Tric B |

Of course you're going to pay more for a meal in this setting, but it's good food, well prepared, in a lovely space, with modern decor and huge windows overlooking the garden, which must be lovely in spring and summer. Be prepared to spend some time here. The staff seemed rushed and overwhelmed, and I notice a service issue in a prior review. Our server was very nice but had to apologise more than once for delayed service. I was twice told that my drink would be there in a moment, but had to ask for it eventually...after about 10 minutes! It was worth the wait: a muddled strawberry "mocktail." with balsamic, lime juice and club soda. Two of us shared marinated olives for an appetizer: a generous portion of red, green and black meaty olives. Very good value at $4! One in our party ordered a croque monsieur that was billed as being served on brioche but was in fact on grilled baguette; not in itself a big deal, but it was hard to eat for the person who had ordered it and everyone was so busy that we didn't bother to ask about the substitution. A taster of vegetables (Field to Table - advertised as a sharing portion) was delicious but tiny for $14. It was a main meal for one of us and the vegetables were beautifully cooked. I recommend that the menu state that the vegetables are served cold. I also suggest that they be served at cool room temperature rather than straight from the refrigerator. One of us had dessert: a very nice pumpkin flan. Regular coffee was there pronto, but espresso (very good hot espresso) was delayed. I watched a barista reading something at leisure while I was waiting for espresso. Our server had to push him to make it. I recommend this restaurant but with the caveat that one not expect to get out of there quickly.

Wonderful Crab Cake!

By Jean L |

Like the Barnes collection of art, this restaurant was superb. I ordered the crab cake after seeing the diner next to me partaking of his. When the three inch high quiche was delivered to the diner on the other side I vowed to return to try that the next time. This is a special restaurant in a special place in a great city! Little touches make an impression. The knife balances on the cutting edge. Perhaps I have been living in a cave but that was memorable!

Wonderful

By Becky V |

We made a reservation (good thing) because we were going to be at the Barnes at lunch time and we expected to be hungry after looking at all the art. Correct. The room was just lovely with good light. The menu offered options for picky and/or vegetarian eaters. Good sized portions and perfectly prepared food with some nice sides and presentation. Our waiter was attentive.

One of the best museum restaurants

By JJJC_Family |

I suspected this was going to be good when I stepped in and saw the desserts and they all looked very nice, indeed. Usually, I think most deserts look terrible. They looked so good I could not resist. We got carrot cake, which turned out a good choice. My grilled chicken sandwich and my wife's hamburger were also good choices. We sat in the garden and it was pleasant. The service was prompt and they were friendly, to boot. I joked to the workers that I would come back just to eat in the restaurant. I was only being half facetious. Many museum restaurants are surprisingly good and this one is not an exception, though it was exceptional as it's not meant to be a fancy, table cloth restaurant and the food was a step above normal cafeteria style places. Now you probably won't make a special trip here, but if you are already at the museum, it works well for a Convenient quick, tasty meal at a reasonable cost in a nice setting. Why look anywhere else?

The Second Half of a Great Date

By Robert V |

This is the story of a date in two parts - a tour of a delightful art collection followed by a relaxing luncheon overlooking a museum garden. But be warned, you must plan this visit well in advance or you'll be disappointed. Step One: go on-line and purchase tickets IN ADVANCE for your tour of the collection. I highly recommend that you spend the extra bucks for the 10AM docent-led tour of the collection. After spending 1.5 hours admiring works by Monet, Renoir, Van Gogh, Cezanne and other masters, head to the Garden Restaurant on the ground floor. Unlike the galleries, the restaurant DOES NOT accept reservations - so getting there a little head of the lunch crowd will likely get you a table without a wait. The dining room is bright and contemporary and opens out to a garden seating area for nice days. Due to museum restrictions, all cooking is done in a building that is separate from the dining area and galleries - so understand that virtually all food is served chilled or at room temperature. I suggest that you order a bottle of Paul Louis Martin Brut Champagne ($40) and start a leisurely luncheon with the local cheese sampler ($16) and the charcuterie ($18). After that, there's a choice of 6 salads and three proteins if you're so inclined. I was happy with the Grilled Free Range Crick Chicken with salsa verde (remember - this is served chilled). After your luncheon, you can return to the galleries to further examine any paintings that caught your attention during the morning's docent-led tour. All told, it will be a very memorable day - so long as you plan it right. I did see people being told that the tour ticket allotment for the day had been sold out as they were turned away at the museum door at 2:00PM on a Saturday. Don't let that happen to you.

Great food, in the mosy 'impressive' gallery in Philly

By Latkes66 |

We spent a fabulous day visiting the Barnes Foundation collection of Impressionist art and rather than go searching for an outside restaurant (none are really close by) we decided to have lunch at the Barnes restaurant. A beautiful minimalist setting overlooking the gardens with wonderful and reasonably priced food If you visit Barnes, EAT HERE! The food is beautifully presented and the staff is amazingly friendly and competent. A great break in between visiting the 2 floors of the gallery providing energy to continue the visit.

Wonderful salads and Soups

By Mike F |

Inside the Barnes Museum (with a lovely outdoor patio), this is one of the better museum restaurants we have found. You will love the complimentary chips served at each table (our server gave us a refill) and the small but more than adequate menu of salads, soups and entrees. While this is a bit on the pricey side, the service, surroundings and food quality made it well worth the price.

Not so good

By Isolde S |

In a building like that one would expect a little more than what there is,at least a few more tables an chairs

Pretty Good for a Museum Restaurant

By rivernan |

Going to the new Barnes Museum on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway requires advance ticket purchase. Having visited the Barnes Estate in Merion, and this being our first visit to the new museum, we decided to get a docent tour. Would have been rather pricey if my companion was not a member so at a reduced price our entrance and tour was $22.00 per person. Although we had plans to take a leisurely walk to a restaurant we had seen reviewed, It was a horrible rainy day and there was no changing plans as it was not easy to get this date and go. So with some reservation we decided to eat at the museum. As museum restaurants go it too was a bit pricey and I paid 16 bucks for a Rueben. My Companion had some sort of vegie thing served on a piece of slate. Did not look very filling for the price. Still everything was tasty and much better than walking out in the rain. Oh and the service could have been more friendly and attentive. I was thirsty and had to get up and get my own water refill.

The Fresh Food

By littlehpm |

The food is so fresh!! Some of the best I have ever tasted! If you are in the museum or around it, you should definitely stop by and grab something to eat.

Nice Restaurant at the Barnes Foundation

By Deb B |

The day we visited the Barnes Foundation was cold, windy and snowy. We opted to eat lunch onsite and were glad we did. The restaurant offers reasonable prices with a fresh selection of food. The server promptly took our order and provided complimentary chips and dip while we waited for our order. I enjoyed the salad with mixed greens, Brussels sprouts, chickpeas and Parmesan, adding grilled chicken. Service was friendly and helpful. Overall a good meal.

Nice Lunch @ the Barnes

By KeepWandering |

Was at the Barnes Foundation. The restaurant is nice stop. I think because the admission is paced, found that the restaurant was also able to accommodate the guests. I’m not sure if this would be the case on weekend. I was there on a Monday. The food menu is on-line and is not the typical buffet or pre-packaged food at typical museums. Probably a little bit pricier that other typical lunch places, but within the Barnes; before or after – it was very nice.

Good service, good food, good prices

By Bob H |

Atmosphere very pleasant. Salmon was excellent. Greek yogurt had too much yogurt (two times too much) and not enough topping, so don't order that. Decent wines at reasonable prices.

Had a quick lunch and was good

By Bruce C |

We had Kale Salad ($15) and Chicken Salad ($16), which were good. Coffee was $3. Service was good, but we saw our meals waiting for pickup about 3-4 minutes. Not much available nearby. If you are at the Barnes Museum, and hungry, then worth the stop.

Lovely Place For Lunch

By Mulherin |

My husband and I had a very tasty lunch at the Garden Restaurant. We both ate the Crustless Quiche, which was so delicious. The best quiche I have had. Our server was charming. A really good spot for lunch whilst visiting The Barnes.

Eat Before Viewing the Art Work

By James D |

We shared an excellent meal, selected from an excellent menu offering, prepared and served by excellent chef and wait staff in a very beautiful restaurant setting. How lovely and filling.

Tucked away fresh bistro!

By Lindy |

LOVED the atmosphere of the Garden & friendly service. What we ordered: French toast, veggie frittata, Nashville hot chicken sliders, and breakfast burger (drinks: Tennessee sweet tea, Bloody Mary, mimosa). The complimentary chips are amazing - we had to ask for a second serving. Everything came out hot & all ingredients were very fresh. The hot chicken sliders were the best - crispy chicken on a fluffy roll with a slight backend kick. We did not stay to check out the gallery but if it is anything like the food, it is likely very special.

Delicious food with lovely view

By Viola B |

My sister had the chicken salad BLT and thought it was delicious. I had the falafel sandwich which was great. The fries had an unusual spice mixture which paired well with the falafel. My sis enjoyed a glass of Malbec which she said was excellent. It was the perfect stop mid-tour of the artwork.

Excellent lunch spot

Appealing menu---excellent food--outside patio--make this a good spot for lunch---service is very good

Visit the museum but pass on the restaurant

By 2100Dogtraveler |

as members of the Barnes, it is one of our great joys to spend a quiet afternoon going through the collection and spending time with some of our favorite masterpieces and discovering new ones that we may have missed . Its like spending time with old friends and being able to make new ones. We decided to give the restaurant a try as it was recently taken over by Steven Starr. What a major disappointment. We first went on line and looked at the lunch menu. Unfortunately, on the weekends (which is when most people visit the museum) they have an extremely limited brunch menu. It makes no sense. You would think they would offer more choices and especially for a lunch crowd on the weekends, when they are busy. The restaurant is not itself a destination, much as it would like to believe. The only people there are those who have gone to the museum. The food was dreadful. My wife had an omelet. She asked if she could have an egg white omelet and was told no. The obvious reason once it arrived is that it was not from freshly cracked eggs. It was a bright yellow rubbery mess. My burger was acceptable but not worth the price. The coffee was cold and served in the smallest cups you could imagine. The staff is not trained. This was a total disappointment and not up to the typical Starr quality such as Parc Bistro.

Our Impression was that it was Delicious

By ASBCRB |

This isn't your typical fast food. This was artisan food. We had the grilled chicken salad BLT with salad and the sweet potato toast with pomegranate and crema (I didn't get the horseradish or eat the pearl onions or cilantro. The food was delicious and fresh. Not cheap, but highly recommend.

Excellent summer garden salads at The Barnes

By T2011PQcarol |

Beautiful garden seating with umbrellas; excellent choice of summer salads -3 or 4 selections per plate serving. Reasonably priced for quality and location. Fresh kale, garlic-roasted humus, roasted asparagus made for a lovely lunch break on a Saturday in summer. Not rushed, but we wanted to get back to viewing the collections. Desserts looked great, too - walnut torte, flourless chocolate cake, and more. But we opted for a quick coffee in the downstairs cafe, and returned to the galleries.

Fridays in May Members 20% off Days get busy

By IRWilmDe |

Thankfully, our reservation for an early 11:30am lunch on a May Members 20% off Friday beat the rainy day rush. The restaurant and museum were the busiest we’ve ever witnessed. Nonetheless, the service (by Danny) was excellent. We shared the soup, Barnes salad and a side of grilled tofu - all excellent and plenty for a freshly made, satisfying lunch served very quickly (before the noon rush). The coffee and their espresso are perfect for our tastes. Upon arrival, a tiny cup of delicious potato crisps challenges one’s self control- we were tempted to ask for another but resisted. The cafe on the ground level is now downstairs by the lockers and restrooms and gift shop. This was packed with visitors. The restaurant on the ground level as you enter is well worth planning ahead to enjoy the quiet and beautiful garden views.

Lovely luncheon with a bit of culture

By Pat_PDS |

Before our tour of the Barnes Museum we dined on a very nice cheese platter and sampled their seasonal cocktail offering of cider, ginger beer and dark rum. Lovely!

Wonderful little restaurant in a great museum

By PhilosophicalOldGuy |

My wife and I had a late lunch here halfway through our visit to the Barnes. Great rest for our feet and we were expecting very little else. Our expectations were far exceeded; the menu was strong and everything was tasty. We split a Barnes Burger and had their flight of deviled eggs. Everything was delicious. Staff was friendly, service was quick and the ambiance (with views of the courtyard) was excellent. We enjoyed ourselves thoroughly and left refreshed and ready to dive into collection viewing once again. With a 20% tip, our bill came to $28.

Convenient

By AmherstNY1 |

The perfect way to finish off a morning at the gallery. The service was pleasant, the food well presented. This was a refined way to finish the visit.

Good food and very nice atmosphere

By jjhowlett |

The restaurant takes no reservations but because of the limited access policy that the museum enforces, we walked in and got a window table without waiting. The menu was interesting and varied. The food was quite good. Portions were on the small side. Prices, however, were not. A light lunch for three people came to over $80. I would either order carefully or think about eating at the Whole Foods deli counter across the street.

Great quite & nice place to have lunch after or before visiting the museum

Great restaurant ! We sat outside in the nice garden, and had a salad, a peach&cheese tartine and a sandwiche. The fresh lemonade was just perfect for this hot day. Waiter was also very nice.

See the museum avoid the restaurant

We ordered a salad and a frittata. 45 minutes later, we left without either. The waitress made no effort to tell us there were problems with our order.

A place to visit...

Few lines to reccomend this place for the extraordinary paintes collection and excellent dinner facility. We had some salmon with dijonese sauce, beef with potatoes and vegetables. We were in group so they have organized for us some self service. Good quality and definetely good service. Overall good experience.

Delicious!

This is an excellent restaurant within The Barnes Foundation. The offerings were varied, with the seasonal selections changing weekly. Multiple choices of salads with protein pairings to choose from. Wait staff was extremely knowledgable and proficient. A nice view of the garden area was welcome on this rainy day.

Creative solution

After spending several hours in the Barnes we needed a bit of a break before finishing our our 4 hour visit. The Garden Restaurant was the perfect spot to have a lovely lunch and rest our feet. Our waiter was quite friendly and explained that the food here is served at ambient temperature. This is a solution to the fire hazard that cooking appliances might create. Considering the value of the contents in this building, I could appreciate their concern. The food is actually cooked a few doors down the street. We were invited to view the large bowls of prepared salads from which one can choose, this way we could see exactly what we were getting. My salmon was served at ambient temperature and was very good. I believe the salad menu is changed weekly. My roasted eggplant salad was divine. Our party of 4 was very satisfied. There is lovely seating both indoors and outside. If seated indoors can enjoy the garden setting thru plenty of glass windows. Cost is expensive but was not surprising considering the venue.

Well worth the stop

Stopped for lunch near the conclusion of my visit. Wasn’t sure what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the open air space, decor and the food. I had the tuna crudo and the roasted cauliflower salad. Delicious and beautifully presented. Wait staff were excellent. And the house made chips were well seasoned and thickly crispy. A delight. Would definitely want to come again.

Great place for a bite!

Are you going to get a better meal if you drive to Rittenhouse Square? Sure. Do you want to move your car and pay for parking twice? No. This museum restaurant is convenient and good. It's nice to know that your tab is also supporting the museum. My wife enjoyed the Barnes Burger; I had the salmon. Eat here! Order the burger.

Excellent lunch at the Barnes

this is not your average museum cafe. there is a very artistic chef at work. I had an amazing lunch. The walls are covered with incredible fabric art as well.

Another gem amid famed Museum's global diamonds

A bright and airy small restaurant is an added bonus to your visit to the famed Barnes Collection of global masterpieces situated on the scenic Parkway in Center City Philadelphia. Two major floors containing the world's art masterpieces, this famed museum Restaurant brings an interesting and very tasty menu to a constant flow of hungry visitors. It's not fast-food but rather a talented chef's version of multi-salads and a small plate assortment. The calm and welcoming atmosphere here is a sharp departure of the electricity in the air among the vast art trove cultivated over the years by Dr. Albert Barnes. A must visit to the galleries and to the Garden Restaurant.

Relaxing and very nice

For a Museum restaurant - this rates very highly. The food and service were perfect- the garden is beautiful- and one of my favorite museums is right above your head.

Simple but Satisfying

After 2 hours wandering the museum, we rested our feet at the Garden Restaurant. The chopped salad was huge, and loaded with veggies not typical in such a salad (green beans, corn, Garbanzos). My partner ordered steel-cut oatmeal. An unusual offering for an afternoon menu, but pleasing.

Garden Restaurant Shows Difficulty of Serving a Superb Cheese Plate with Insufficient Turnover

By tombantle |

While awaiting my appointed hour at the Barnes Foundation collection, I decided to eat lunch at the Foundation's Garden Restaurant. It was about 12:15 on a Monday. Clearly a large tour group was being fed, taking the attention of the staff. I was immediately seated at a table for two and given a menu with its offerings divided into two parts: "Nourish" and "Sample." I quickly chose to sample the "Selection of 5 Cheeses" ($19). But my order was not taken for some minutes. After it was taken, a wait of another 15-20 minutes occurred. During that time I could survey the spare, but charming setting looking out on a garden. When I finally received the cheeses attractively displayed on a slate with a figgy jam, they all were colder than their optimal temperature for full flavor. This is almost inevitable when a restaurant does not sell enough cheese to bring their cheeses to full flavor before a cheese selection is ordered. Clearly in my case, slices were cut off refrigerated cheeses. This converted what might have been a tasting delight into a so-so experience. Given this treatment, the softer cheeses seemed to come off better. The Jasper Hill Farms "Harbison" was smooth, but complex and savory. The Cypress Grove “Humboldt Fog” was distinctive, although not fully flavorful as it would be at room temperature. The Point Reyes Bleu was charmingly piquant, but promised to be more luxurious if properly warmed. In contrast, the cold harder cheeses, couldn't reveal any of their presumed flavor. The worst was the Cypress Grove “Midnight Moon” that tasted only of soap. The cold Jasper Hill Cabot Clothbound Cheddar tasted old, not aged, Proper warming would have allowed its fat to mellow its dried out consistency. The cheeses were served with shards of toasted hearty breads. Good flavor, but I would prefer fresh bread. The figgy jam did help make the harder cheese more palatable. After finishing, I waited too long both for the check and for the payment to be processed.

a pleasant spot for a light lunch but menu needs a little more variety and also more local input rather than aping the eateries of metropolitan galleries.

Convenient, tasty but pricey.

After a wonderful visit to the Barnes we grabbed a quick lunch. Two of us had salads, both very good and interesting but pricey. One of us had a very good risotto.
