"Good burger at Good King"

By Robert R |

The GKT is within walking distance of our house and will be our next go to place to eat. We've already eaten there twice and both times have not been disappointed. They have a killer bar selection with great cocktails and a decent wine and beer selection. Our first visit we went all out with multiple drinks, apps, entrees, dessert and after dinner drinks. Our second visit was burgers and drinks as we enjoyed their outdoor seating. You always leave feeling like a king or queen from GKT.

Brunch Gem of Society Hill

By Sergio C |

A small brunch location just off of South Street with a menu full of flavors & a pleasant atmosphere for all palates. Cheese board starter, TGK Burger, & Croque Madame is just a short list of their phenomenal menu, which we enjoyed in the outside seating. Our server Tom was superb on the Bloodies/Mimosa's !! adding the final touch to making this our top brunch spot in Philly.

Seems to be going downhill, sad to say...

By PortalPrincess |

Returned to the Good King Tavern on a Sunday night to grab a quick dinner at one of our local standards. We ordered our favorite Socca chickpea crepe that came out completely burnt on the bottom. When we showed it to our server, she seemed confused and said, "so do you want to send it back?" Well, obvously! Then my French Onion Soup arrived, a dish I've had several times at Good King. Rather than the typical clear beef broth base, I got a bowl of heavily thickened sludge that was more gravy than soup - it was topped with a slice of baguette that hadn't been toasted and contributed to said sludge. But I was embarassed to send back two things in one dinner, so I just didn't eat it. Hoping this was the result of a less than stellar line cook having an off night and not a trend. We'll try it again, but if the food doesn't improve, we'll just restrict ourselves to the bar, which is always excellent.

On a beautiful day, I stopped for dinner and sat at a table outside. The four tables in the area and rice that were full. The server was it attentive throughout the meal. She had some very helpful suggestions and knew the menu well. I started With the very tasty soup and had the special, pork pane, which has been on the menu as pork schnitzel. I chose it over the burger because it seemed to be more work for the chef and something that I could not do myself. It rewarded me with wonderful flavor. I’ve been here before, several months ago, and plan to go again.

Disappointed

By Bayside11361 |

Appetizer escargot(10.00)-7 pieces in a salty creamy sauce with some kind of green flecks couldn't tell or taste what they were. Steak frites -meat cooked medium rare as regulated was tasty. Too much salty beef broth on plate which had the frit es soggy. Only ate about a third of them. Service was friendly

Great neighborhood stumble upon!

By Lacee G |

Usually stumbling into an unknown restaurant leaves you unsatisfied and wishing you had gone somewhere familiar. The Good King has a great ambiance, great food, and wide-variety of music playing. We went for brunch and had the best steak and eggs, ever, a delicious ratatouille omelette, and a flavorful, and perfectly toasted pan beignet. Can't wait to try it for dinner.

Let's get specific about what to eat

By David F |

For tonight's dinner with my wife and son we could choose no wrong. Here's what we enjoyed; Appetizers: Mussels were savory and slightly buttery. Brussels sprouts were crispy. Onion soup was a unique interpretation with creamy cheese and slightly sweet. Duck confit (leg) was savory with tasty potato. Boeuf Provencal savory and slightly sweet with a melt in you mouth texture served with carrot and egg noodle. (Sorry my picture doesn't do it justice.) Duck a l'orange (breast) was a nice interpretation and sweet of course with potato, carrot and parsnips. Wine: Cote d'Rhone was full bodied and nicely balanced.

I love the Good King Tavern. I have been there quite a few times for every occasion. For just drinks, to brunch, and of course dinner. The atmosphere is very cozy. It's very nicely lit. Their drink menu is phenomenal the bartenders always do a great job. The service is always on point and the food is amazing. It's right off of south street too.

Simple good food with a French flair

By Brian T |

First, don't be deceived by look. The Good King is a neighborhood place that isn't flashy. If you blink you may miss it. This part of Philly is very walk-able so park on any close side street. Cocktails were interesting and mostly Gin/Rye based. I had the Mamie Taylor and my friends had the Sazerac, both were very good and interesting. The cheese platter was very good an excellent selection with all the accompaniments. Extra bread included. I had the veal chop fried perfectly and resting on a bed of kale with shaved pecorino. The meat was juice and they leave it on the bone! My friend had the lamb mixed grill. Chops were perfect and the tongue was amazing. The sausage was a little ordinary so maybe a leg roast instead? We were too full for desert so maybe next time.Service was very good and attentive.

Average food with above average Pricing (expensive for what you get)

By johnny m |

Was average (not bad but not great). Beer, service and atmosphere were really good. Super small and super expensive apps were not good. Burger was OK, not great and fries, which I heard were good but average to me, at best. Overall a pricey meal for OK to average food. A $6 fee for using our credit card was a greedy move and won't be back.

Great little French Bistro

By BobxxC |

My wife and I tried this neighborhood place and fell in love with its bistro food, its staff and its prices. Over the past two months we have been back six times as we worked our way through Chef Paul Lyon's Provençal specials. I love salt cod dishes. His brandade is wonderful by itself or stuff in a pepper as complement to his grilled sardines.

cozy and delightful

By Mercedes O |

We came in on a cold night, and the creaky wood floors and wonderful food charmed us. The service was great, and so were the cocktails.

Excellent Food, Service, and Ambiance

By Janet_writes |

Good King has that cozy neighborhood bistro feel that makes you feel happy and welcome immediately. We enjoyed the duck breast and chicken confit immensely, as well as the specialty cocktails. We received a gratis wax bean, pine nut salad that was the perfect starter and absolutely delicious. The food is done thoughtfully and the servers are extremely knowledgeable about all choices, including the wines. I highly recommend Good King as one of Philly's consistently best restaurants. Go and enjoy!

Return visit as good as first!

By superjfc |

The Good King Tavern continues to provide patrons with attentive service and delicious food. Cozy and lively atmosphere accompanied by a great selection of cocktails, beer and wine make for a great evening in the Bella Vista section of Philadelphia. Each one of the eight of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals. And don't skip out without having dessert which was excellent!

Another GREAT South St eatery .

Just off South St a wonderful Tavern .Great food ,great vibe ,great beers .I ask you what else does one need ?

Fun Neighborhood Dining

By BrynMawrBK |

The Good King Tavern, located on a corner a block off South Street, is popular and crowded even on weeknights, so we were happy to get a table in the dimly-lit back room. Service was somewhat slow because our server was constantly moving at a trot to keep up with her tables and it was hard to catch her eye; maybe adding staff could improve this. The rest of our experience was very good. Escargots, tagliatelle with mushrooms, Swiss chard croquettes and the burger were all very nicely prepared and tasty. Duck of the night (there always is one listed on the chalkboard outside the front door) was confit, a bit too rich for us but still good. Our cocktails were especially well made -- they and the cozy atmosphere were the best aspects of our dinner here.

Overpriced and less than average food

By Ramadama |

This is small local restaurant. We opted to eat outside because it was very noisy and warm inside the restaurant. The menu is very limited and the food is very overpriced. The special beat and radish salad with arugula was very disappointing because it had 2 shaved, very thin pieces of beets and 7 shaved, thin pieces of radishes for $10. The steak tartar was very good but came with just a few slivers of toasted bread and you needed more. The escargot was average in a salty broth. The burgers were over priced at $14. They were very greasy and flavorless. Asked for medium and it came done medium well. The fries were very average and very greasy. I think McDonald's $1 cheeseburgers and fries are better tasting and I have to be desperate to eat there. The "best" red house wine for $8 a glass was barely drinkable. On top of everything the waitress was very surly and we never complained or returned any of this mediocre food. This restaurant was an extreme disappointment.

Won’t Go Back !!

By Paul I |

Just got home from dinner at Good King with friends. The group at the next table from us were SO OBNOXIOUSLY LOUD, we still have a headache. WHY CAN’T MANAGERS BE AWARE & CASUALLY ASK PATRONS TO BE RESPECTFUL OF OTHERS ??? Our server, Liz, was not pleasant in the least, and could almost be described as being Short & Pushy. When my husband ordered his burger & asked for No Bun, because he doesn’t eat Carbs, Woujd you think she would have asked if he wanted a substitution for his fries ? DUHHHH. If the menu had stated that it came with fries, he would’ve declined.

Good lunch trip

By Kelly S |

We reserved a table during a day trip to Philadelphia after seeing a shout out in Bon Appetit magazine. Really enjoyed a Sunday lunch here. Service was friendly and attentive. The prices and portions were reasonable...prices not too high and we were able to finish all that we ordered, from appetizers through dessert. The atmosphere is cozy but hip. There is a pay parking lot in the next lot, so very convenient.

Good food fairly priced and we'll prepared

By saturdaydiner |

We are here on a fairly busy Sunday evening and had a very nice meal. I had a well prepared, moderately two pieces of duck in a lovely sauce over asparagus bits and mushrooms. My wife had steak frites and the frites were outstanding. Somewhat pricey wine by the glass and a small but good two selection. Overall good deal!

Stick with apps, the rest crap

By Jon E |

The apps were okay, spicy calamari, onion soup, salty olives, winter salad all okay. the entrees were not even mediocre. Hard dry falafel patty, very spicy (not mentioned in menu) tasteless hamburger, over cooked Cornish hen, overly salty chickpea fries. in a hard to park area there are better choices. Don't know why, but the place was busy.

The menu is always surprising

By Jim P |

great tastes and the drinks are amazing. Quiet yet energetic. Knowledgeable wait staff. Chef has great ideas.

Not very good food

By Travelergirl998 |

I ate here for a brunch recently and the food was pretty poor as was the service. Possibly because the waitress was new or just inattentive, she never seemed engaged in taking our orders and was not open to requests. The steak I had was overcooked and they in fact did not even ask how I wanted my steak and the eggs were not done well. The coffee was good and unique but I wish they had the option for normal coffee in addition to the fancy stuff

Nice bistro experience

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

For dinner we had cocktails and wine and get ordering small plates till we were filled. Love eating this way and it’s a good place for this. The main negative is that the food and dining area are just a little rough/raw for the price tag. The food is fun but has a tavern/bistro feel that doesn’t deserve the price. The sunchokes in duck fat were yummy like having fancy chips. The salad was yummy. Service was very bright and helpful.

French bistro in a funky cool neighborhood

By LLoper |

Dined at the Good King last night and enjoyed a bit of French change of pace from the usual East Coast grilled or fried seafood. Did a little mix and match with cream/fennel mussels, green salad, foie gras, and a half dozen oysters. Oysters are a great deal at a dollar each for happy hour. Well-chosen wine by the glass with several good French options. Excellent service includes sparkling water.

Fish

By SBrand-12 |

We went here for dinner on a Friday nite. It was a lively, hip place. The food was excellent esp the fish dishes, wait staff very attentive but not intrusive however it was very loud.

Good food in Philadelphia

By Sligome |

Had Sunday lunch. Ate early so limited menu. French onion soup is really good. Not typical. Had their sausage excellent. We had desert something not normal for us. It was very good. Homemade ice cream was good, chocolate desert exceptional and my mousse was just right. It came with a small coffee.

Top notch!

By Isi1234 |

In town, visiting old friend who suggested this place. Great, little corner restaurant, very nice bar and friendly staff. The food was excellent, the menu is limited, which I prefer, and there were plenty of specials. I'd say the food leans toward French? But maybe more eclectic. We really enjoyed everything. Excellent service!

Good French Bistro Fare at the Good King Tavern

By Foodie Explorer |

Went to the tavern on a Saturday night with a friend before a show. Service was attentive and helpful answering questions. Nice, relaxed venue. It was crowded but not too noisy. Pretty standard French bistro offerings, but several with a little ‘flair’ to them. We ordered escargot and oysters as appetizers. The oysters came with a little bit of trout roe and cream fraiche. Really nice touch. Excellent. For entrees, we ordered the duck breast and scallops. Duck was the most tender we’ve ever had. Really excellent, and came with risotto and butternut squash. Scallops were tender and tasty, presentation pretty basic as it was accompanied with only a simple salad frisée. Ordered a cheese plate for dessert. Four selections with a mix of cow, sheep and goat. Nice way to finish a meal. We found the wine by the glass and beer offerings a bit limited. Nevertheless, we will definitely return and sample other menu offerings (and the duck if it’s offered again).

Great New Place in Bella Vista

By lougehrig |

I have mixed feelings about writing this review because I would like to keep this place a secret for myself. However I know the word will eventually get out so I might as well start the ball rolling. The Good King Tavern is just phenomenal. It is the quintessential neighborhood pub with a unique French slant that makes it a very special place. I am not going to bore you with exactly what I ate and how good it was instead I just want to proclaim that this pub has it all. Great food and drink at reasonable prices served by a friendly staff with a gracious owner present to make sure all is well.

Hidden gem

By Maximilien G |

This is a great spot, the food is amazing, wait staff is pro and friendly. You cannot miss this place if you are in the area, overall an amazing place, and pricing is very affordable.

Very noisy

By Lsbtravel1 |

Other reviewers have mentioned that the music was way too loud. We didn’t have that problem as the overall noise was so high we could hardly here the music. Our booth was alongside the long bar and it was really overwhelming. The Restaurant had run out of soups and their signature Duck by 7pm disappointing my friends. The escargot was excellent. Service was pleasant but I doubt if I’d go back and be subject to the high noise level on Saturday night

Nice surprise

By collmc45 |

Small menu but decent food. We had the a burger and I think my friend liked it, salade verte was really good (dressed perfectly), and barbajuan fritters were excellent!! The fig and marscapone dish was just okay. Good service

I'm so glad we ate here.

By Karen M |

Short couple of days in Philly and spent some time finding a restaurant that we would both love. FOUND it. Husband started with a drink, a sazarac. It was perfect, I had to try it because he was raving. I had the rose wine with the help of our server, and it was so good I had two of them. Husband had the steak fritte which he loved. I had the tomatoes provencal, so so good, it was very well done. I then had the mussels so very well prepared and flavorful. They came with french fries. OMG I could not stop eating them, I'm not sure what they do to them but I assure you they are addictive. Excellent food and exceptional service in a casual atmosphere. Wish they would add a restaurant in Wilmington because I would be there every week. Cannot wait to go back to this one.

A hidden gem

By Ragtop 2 |

Went there on a Thursday night with my wife. Sat at the bar and really enjoyed the food, drinks and total vibe. Snacked on escargot, steak tartare and fries (very French) all very good. Nice selection of beer ( but I’m not a beer snob) and wine. Nice music playing and friendly bar staff will definitely be going back. Nice outdoor seating in good weather, community table and individual tables too!

Great eclectic menu

By IndyDogz |

The Good King Tavern just south of south on 7th street is a great neighborhood restaurant and bar. It has an eclectic selection of American and European food with something for everyone. The service is also very good. The place can be quite loud with the music, so perhaps not a great spot for a romantic dinner, but the food is a real treat.

Gem won't be hidden for long!

By superjfc |

We have been wanting to visit this new restaurant in Bella Vista since it opened about three months ago. We were not disappointed. The crowd was lively and ambience warm and friendly. The service was attentive as well. There was a nice selection of wines, beers, and specialty cocktails. The Sazerac was as good as any made in New Orleans. All of the appetizers ordered by our group of 12 were excellent, especially the brussel sprouts, pommes frites, and socca. The mussels and swordfish entrees were exceptional. Everyone was very pleased with their entrees as well. All of the desserts sampled were delicious. We especially enjoyed the warm bread pudding with lavender ice cream. The portions were a nice size and the prices very reasonable. Recommend that you plan ahead because this neighborhood gem is quickly growing in popularity. Can't wait to return to share this experience with family and other friends!

Getting some duck fat on in Philly

By Dharma |

This place is my new favorite! Everything... I mean e-v-e-r-y detail was met with the utmost strive...arrived to perfection. Started with escargot. The tender snail with a delicious sauce made me want to lick the plate! Then the duck wings. OMG!! I didn't even expect to really like them because of the "orange" glaze. But there was such a layering of spices and flavors...brilliantly executed! The Jordan Artichokes were delightful. Nice texture and very tasty. The steak was perfectly done, medium rare and the flavor of the sauce with the nicely crisp frites... could not stop eating! And let me tell you that you will not be disappointed if you order a cocktail! We had a few and they were fantastic! I loved the food, drinks, service, staff, and decore! Congratulations on winning for everything that goes with a dining experience! Applause!!!

Very good burger and creative drinks

By dreamgenie |

We've been looking for a good local bar and burger place, and this place fits the bill. My husband had the burger, which was delicious (with cheese and bacon). He upgraded to truffle fries, not knowing it was another $5. I had the mussels, which were really small, though maybe it was been a bit early in the season. We each had a drink special--don't remember what exactly, but both were very good. The cuisine is more upscale bar food (it bills itself as a French pub), so prices are a bit higher than a standard bar. Overall, good food at a pretty fair price and in a laid-back comfortable setting.

Great food in the city

By TaftonSnowball |

We had reservations early (6:30 PM ) on Saturday February 6. We arrived right on time and we were seated immediately. Our server was Patrick and he was very prompt and well versed in explaining the menu to those of us who were unfamiliar with French cuisine. Cocktails were generous as were the food portions. We were celebrating my birthday. The only negative in the whole experience was that they did not have scallops on the menu on that particular evening. I would certainly return to this eating establishment. My second choice steak and frites was delicious.

Local - casual

By Ron J |

Great place to enjoy a good meal in a very casual neighborhood setting. Not fancy but very good. You can make a reservation but be prepared to wait. Not a big place, not a lot of tables and people like to linger. Meeting a friend, casual date, just plain hungry, this is the ideal spot. No parking Full bar.

Great happy hour and dinner

By Meg F |

Buck-a-shuck Wellfleet oysters and coupes of Prosecco were the fantastic happy hour specials. Dinner included a duck and a pasta special - both were delicious. Good service at the bar and at the table. It's a very cute, corner bistro. Highly recommend.

Cozy French Bistro experience

By SLP v |

Enjoyed a excellent dinner with friends. We were beyond happy with the beer selections, delicious house wine and speciality drinks. We shared many awesome appetizers, naming a few: brussel sprouts, sardines, smoked lentils, and Socca/chick pea crepes. Entrees were memorable as well, naming several: eggplant, steak, sausage, salad, and a hamburger with incredible french fries. No one in our party of 8 was disappointed. Each food item was exceptional. Despite no live music on our visit, the noise level was quite high - making for difficult conversation at times. We all agreed that this restaurant is quite special with a fun, hip vibe. Good price point too. Bottom line- will return again!

Warm, comfortable and GOOD!

By PaulSnood |

While visiting Philly we chanced onto The GKT on an unseasonably cold Saturday night and were very glad we did. The place was packed at 8 o'clock but we were seated quickly after one of their interesting craft cocktails at the bar. I would call the ambience almost a French Pub, with a bistro type menu, and we enjoyed mussels in a peppery white wine broth, Onion Soup Gratinee (a little sweet but very good) and a special goat cheese ravioli. All were excellent and I loved the wine program with 750 ml pichets in the $30. range. They have 3 levels, good, better & best, we had the better which was an excellent Cote du Rhone from France. A wonderful, lively tavern with great food and drink.

Neighborhood Bar

By Cait |

This is not my neighborhood bar, but I really wish that it was. The bartenders are awesome and the wine list is great for a tavern situation like this one. The food is great as well. It does get a little hot inside, but it's worth it.

Great neighborhood place, worthy of a special occasion

By Keylargoforever |

We had my birthday dinner here tonight. It was our first time; we checked it out because friends said it was great. It was! The vibe was perfect - great music but quiet enough to have a conversation, comfortable seating, and creative, well-prepared food. The service was friendly, knowledgeable, and professional. Great wines at reasonable prices, fun cocktails, interesting beers. The kind of place that does Philly proud!

Very cozy

By alexperovic |

Really liked the atmosphere in this place. The food was nice (we shared little tapas-sized dishes), though the selection of drinks was somewhat limited - no G&T (!), and not a very long wine list .

Not to be Missed

By skychaserCalgary |

Good King Tavern has become a “go to” for us when we visit Philadelphia. Last night did not disappoint. The menu is not large but what they offer is well prepared and is great. Superb service.

Reasonably Priced French

By MaryAnneG |

Impromtu Thursday evening dinner with cousins and friend .. Cozy restaurant in South Philadelphia, just off South Street .. I'd been inside before when it was Chickie's and the remodel was definitely noy just a facelift but a better design for guest seating and atmosphere .. Our meals were resonable priced and tasty with a reasonable and diverse selection to choose from .. I was disappointed with King's bar menu, however .. Not a big drinker and having just gotten out of work at 7:00 I felt like starting with a coffee with kahlua but they could only offer the house coffee liqueur which was really not good at all .. so I then asked for a bloody mary .. the waitress wasn't sure if they had mix .. about 15 minutes later she did bring me a bloody mary however (still wonder if they ran to 8th/Bainbridge corner store for tomato or V8 juice .. lol) ,, our grilled octopus appetizer, shirt steak with frites, artichoke barigoule, duck confit and tgk burger were all very good, especially for the price tag attached .. would definitely go to the Good King Tavern again.

What Does a Duck, a Rabbit, and an Omelet Have in Common?

By Nami R |

Found this place on the walk back to the hotel as a rest-stop and went back for dinner that night after reading the menu. All these vacations roaming the streets of Philly and only discovered this place now - where have you been all my life? FABULOUS food, friendly service - just a great place to be. I had the duck, my son had the rabbit and my mother-in-law LOVED her omelet. And really, when was the last time anyone - ever - raved about an omelet. That's how good it was. Delicious.

Kinda Cool

By SaltCoast-K-Crew |

This was a pretty cool experience they had a lot going on with flavors of the food and presentation with interesting drinks to choose from. Our adult family had a great time sampling different craft cocktails and appetizers. With both indoor/outdoor seating and our really good server, we are certain to return here again. Try the tomato appetizer dish for sure. I think it may have been just a special, definitely ask about it.

We were very happy with our food and service! It was a first time visit and we now plan to return again as we had such a nice time and wonderful meal. Tahnk you!!

Great meel with our family.

Been here a number of times but we tried something different. The pork roast was beautiful and tasty. The specialty drinks are the best. We really enjoyed our visit each time we come to Philly. Will be back again.

European atmosphere; delicious cuisine

By ViacomSafeway |

Maybe it was the 2 glasses of house wine, but I came away from dinner with my husband at The Good King with a memorably charming experience; not just a great meal in my belly. We tried several small plates: the Socca (chickpea crepes with amazing ratatoiulle for dipping) and the roasted brussel sprouts stood out as exceptional. I had a wonderful French Onion Soup and he had a fish special that he loved. The atmosphere of the crowded quarters was jovial and prompted friendly and deep conversation with neighbors. Unusual for an American restaurant, fellow diners exchanged recommendations for wine and food and then shared in personal anecdotes of traveling in France or of their courtship. The tables were not communal but needed to be parted to allow admittance of patrons on the bench side. This place would not be good for kids or even stand-off-ish adults but you'd be surprised how cheerful company and a good glass of wine can bring out the extrovert in anybody.

A wonderful tavern on a quiet cozy neighborhood Philly corner

By Judith B |

We went for brunch and sat outside on a beautiful day in May. We all put in our orders for brunch, French Toast, Eggs Benedict and some other delicious stuff, and then we realized, we HAD to have the Bahn Mi sandwich also! Great choice! Fabulous food and great place for brunch!

A return visit holds up

By David S |

I love going back to a special place and finding it still as good as I remembered. Excellent food, excellent beers and wines at Good King. It has a bar vibe, but with fine restaurant quality and service (also prices...). Ordered frog's legs and escargot -- not my usual pub fare! Our waiter was exceedingly informative, and right on with every recommendation, including our choices of wines with each course. Highly recommend this wonderful spot.

Hidden gem in South Philly.

By queenbee666 |

We found this lovely little intimate Tavern in South Philly on our last stay and almost wantt to keep it a secret. It is fairly new and already draws a preety good crowd and the ambience is hip and comforting. The french onion soup is one of the best i have ever tasted and not your run of the mill, little pot with some gruyere melted on the top, but rather the real deal. The mushroom croquettes and roasted brussel sprouts were the best app and had us anticiapting what was yet to come in the special of a deep fried hen to be shared for two. They presented it and you could have sent it back to have the chef slice it up but we were to eager and dove right in to this very moist and juicy hen, we are still licking our fingers. My son had the Steak Frites and it was done to perfection, so many frittes we said we would never finish but guess what not one left on the plate. Here is the biggest kicker it is so affordable, you cannot eat in many places with food this good at these low prices. I am sure the word will spread and we will have to plan way ahead on our next visit to Philly.

Great experience, start to finish!

Came here for our anniversary dinner and loved this place! From the quirky menu items, to the EXCELLENT service - a dinner to remember!

Hip semi-French pub

Wonderful decor in an intimate space, nice service, good tap, delicious food, lovely neighborhood. The slight French touch to pub fare makes it very pleasant to hang, eat and chat.

Cozy Neighborhood Spot Serving Affordable French-inspired Cuisine

By Kreskin2207 |

Really enjoyed our dinner at Good King Tavern last night. The difference between Chicks and the now Good King upon entry is immediate. Its lively! With Chicks I always felt like I was walking into an eatery of bygone era that was ready to board-up shop...oh wait... But now the inside is intimate, buzzing, and lively with upbeat music yet still very casual. Its kind of the perfect balance. The service was great and attentive. They leave a water filled bottle on your table adding to that laidback, neighborhood vibe. Onto the food...amazing. The escargot was great, the octopus was tender although not spicy as it was advertised. The croque monsieur was excellent with perfect in-house made bologna and caramelized onions. The frites were also very good with the aioli, although they could have been a bit more crisp. OH! the brussel sprouts with Chevrolet, hazelnuts, and basil pommade...amazing! I could get three orders and just eat them as an entree! The bottom line is this is a perfect new addition to the neighborhood with solid, affordable, french inspired cuisine, a solid beer list, and great environment whether at a table or at the cozy bar. I look forward to many return visits. All hail the Good King!

A Little Gem

By frisee |

On a warm spring day, we came across The Good King during a walk in the neighborhood. We were somewhat full from several days of good eating in Philadelphia and already had a place picked out for dinner, so we just had drinks. There is a selection of classic cocktails and some house special cocktails, all interesting. We sat at a shaded table outside and wished we were hungry so we could try some of the small plates.

A Fine food experience

By ElainaNewYork |

Busy, busy on a Friday night. Loud, fun place to meet friends.A long bar along one side of the place seats about twenty. The food is so expertly prepared and delicious. The waitstaff is attentive and professional. Try the GK burger or any of the 'over the top ' entrees or apps. A daily good, better and best wines by the glass or pitcher is offered. Blackboard specials are also part of the fine dining you will find here. Classy food in a tavern atmosphere.

Brunch at the King

By Ertghj |

We went for brunch since it's a new restaurant and we live in the neighborhood. We walked into a nearly empty restaurant at 11:45 and it was full at 12:15. It has a wide range of beers and a nice wine selection with reasonable prices. We started with the warm winter salad. Excellent flavors and I would get it again. I had the burger with brioche roll. It had a smoky grilled flavor and fresh lettuce and tomato. The french fries were a little too firm and dark. My wife at the poached eggs on sausage. It sat on a grilled French cheese bread. We had to try the put a crown. It was delicious with salted caramel. It might've been better with dark chocolate. We had a beer and champagne, both very reasonably priced. We plan to return quickly before they raise the prices and fill beyond capacity.

Always come back to this place...

By Julia |

I have visited this restaurant multiple times and frequently take visiting friends to this place. The food is always excellent. I always recommend the duck confit, it is excellent, meat falling off the bone and is literally close your eyes good. Every time we have brought a visiting friend to this restaurant they have loved it. I'm almost reluctant to spread the word because it is such a local place and I really love that vibe about it. Great atmosphere and even better food.

This is a smallish intimate neighbourhood restaurant. Food was very good but I think the highlight of the evening is the friendliness of the staff….definitely will come back here next time we visit Philadelphia. Very nice menu along with some interesting cocktails and wine by the glass and bottle.

French Gastropub Fare

A lovely dinner enjoyed by a party of seven included lots of hits & a few misses in this new neighborhood French bistro. HIghlights of our meal included an asparagus flan, the roasted artichoke dish, socca (a chick pea patty board) french onion soup (more like an onion stew), the warmed winter salad and the pot de creme for dessert. The major miss for us was the saffron pasta with english peas. The anise flavor of the pasta simply overwhelmed the delicacy of the peas & turned it into a one note dish. While meat lovers will have lots of choices here (burger, steak frites, rabbit, sausage etc.) it was nice to see lots of vegetarian options available as well. Portion size was good & plates were easily sharable. Cocktail menu was ample & the French 75s we ordered were strong & tasty. Small selection of beer on tap but the IPA ordered was exactly as described by our server. Service was affable with minor glitches (soup spoon arrived well after soup) but nothing to really diminish our enjoyment of the meal. Things to know: This would be a great spot to hit after a visit to the Philadelphia Magic Gardens. Parking is really tight in this area but there is a pay lot right next door to the tavern. Lastly, the music is played loud, so this is not the place I would recommend for an intimate quiet meal. If they'd turn it down just a titch I think it would make everyone happier. Figure about $40-$45 per person for dinner with cocktail, food, tax & tip.

Great drinks, delicious food, wonderful service, fantastic ambiance

This place is awesome. Whether you want to meet friends for a drink and some snacks of have a nice meal, this is the place. Tucked away and unassuming, this tavern has a great selection of drinks (I recommend getting one of their homemade sodas with some booze in it). The food is absolutely delicious and the rotating specials are creative and fun. And the service makes you think you're at a high-end restaurant. Love coming here. Low-key atmosphere on weeknights and a higher-energy on weekends.

Great food, great atmosphere!

I've now had brunch as well as dinner at Good King Tavern, both were excellent. Favorites for me were the Socca (chickpea pancake), the meat board, the duck confit, and the pork tomato ragu. The night i was there for dinner there was a "suckling pig for 2" which was fantastic! Also for brunch, The L'imposteur, their take on a bloody mary, was delicious.

Excellent duck

We really enjoyed dinner here- fun spot, and not expensive. The duck confit was excellently prepared, and the house wine was better than OK. Two of us had the strip steak special, which was great but smallish. The mushroom croquettes are outstanding- with a pickle topping. Geezer alert: this place can get loud.

Has potential

I ended up being responsible for picking a dinner spot for me and three work colleagues while we conferenced in Philadelphia. Awkward. I tried to poll preferences, and ended up picking this place because it had good reviews, was new and so unlikely to be over-ran with conference-goers, and served French food with I interpret as non-different. First thing I heard upon sitting down at table: “I really hate French food but it’s fine.” And so the night proceeded – some mix of bad attitudes from my friends and some admittedly less than ideal deliveries from the restaurant. It’s a hipster place – super white – they show you their specials by placing a rock with writing on your table. Tons of specials – drinks and food. The waitress was working hard but quickly became tired by the attitudes at our table – I couldn’t blame her. One dish – the falafels – was verifiably dry and not good --- I enjoyed my dishes (the cauliflower & octopus appetizers) a lot – my friend who hated French food ordered pomme frites, demanding ketchup on the side – the french fries were all right. Overall, the food was underwhelming. I know my impressions were tainted by the bad attitudes of my friends and the waitress’ inability to shake them off, but I believe this place can make it with attention to feedback and a focus on growth.
