Local dive with Exceptional Texas style beef brisket

By elilbitz |

Needed a fix of Texas Beef Brisket - and this hit the nail on the head. It was exceptional! Came with a side of tough green beens and delicious slaw. The place is very old and showing signs or wear (there was also a leak in the dining/bar area - maybe A/C duct issue) but it was clean and cozy. Bar staff and wait staff friendly and helpful. Eat inside or out.

Not impressed

By Mile_high_express |

After reading tons of positive reviews, we decided to give Green Mesquite BBQ a try. To sample as much as we could, I ordered the 4 meat plate and my wife the 2 meat plate. We tried a little of everything except the sausage. The ribs were very tender and juicy but very fatty and very little flavor. The brisket was cooked well and had a great smoke ring, but once again there was zero flavor. Their wings are voted the best in Austin but they were very dry. They had great flavor and they are some of the biggest wings I have had so I was very disappointed at the dryness. Pulled pork was juicy but again, no flavor. If it wasn't for the chopped beef, I would have given this place a 1 star. The chopped beef was full of flavor and was very tender. Needless to say, we were very disappointed in Green Mesquite and will most likely not be returning.

Superb Barbeque

My daughter and I had juicy pulled pork sandwiches, roast chicken, yummy Cole slaw, excellent fries and creamyMac ‘n cheese! It’s got the true Texas feel and family friendly ambiance. Great heartfelt hospitality!

Ate here after all these years

By Henry A |

My wife and I have know of this place for years having traveled to Austin countless times over the past 25 years. We passed it by in favor of nicer-looking and trendier venues. Yesterday, on a whim, and since it smelled so good good outside, we had lunch here. It was really good. The service was prompt and friendly. They had all the BBQ choices I’ve come to expect, and I will admit I am partial to any restaurant that serves hush puppies. That MIGHT have influenced my review...

Uber Eats Order

By StevenS1982 |

I recently ordered their chicken fried steak, green beans and Mac n cheese. I've had their brisket, sausage and a variety of sides in the past. Every time I order food from here I am not disappointed. I adore this place. Great BBQ, great southern food. Amazing peach cobbler. Do yourself a favor and eat here.

MMMMMM

By Judyleo |

Ask to sit at Zorro's table and you won't be disappointed. Food here is good overall but sausage is spectacular. Smoked Turkey was another standout. Extra points go to the savvy waiter who knew exactly what we needed. We had a large crowd (10 of us) and they knew just what to do for each of us. Loved it.

Good BBQ

By ALAN W |

We were in Austin visiting relatives. We were out seeing the sites & went to a museum. When it was time for lunch, I checked out places nearby & saw this place. The service was slow to start, then was good. I had a 3 meat platter. The brisket was ok, the ribs very good, the sausage good. The portion was good. The fries were just ok. My wife had the pulled pork sandwich & potato salad. She liked the sandwich. The potato salad was just ok. Prices were good as we had the daily specials.

Good ole Texas BBQ & fixins!

By Deniece D |

We saw the Green Mesquite on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives, and we were excited to try it! It did not disappoint! Not only was the BBQ wonderful, the side dishes were yummy too! My picky 2 year old LOVED the smoked turkey and corn on the cob. The server was nice enough. He wasn't aloof, but he wasn't obnoxiously friendly either. The t-shirts the staff wears are hilarious, and we couldn't leave without buying one. I will say that I probably paid a little more than I would have liked too, but I'll chalk that up to being in a pricey city. I definitely recommend trying the Green Mesquite!

Tried due to DDD, it was OK not great

By julio6925 |

My son and I stopped in here while I was on a business trip. The service was quick and friendly. The food was good but not great. I enjoyed the ribs the best but we did also have the pulled pork and brisket. I am not sure I would go back. The mac and cheese did not have any taste.

Probably doesn't deserve 5* but I love the place.

By Nate |

Been eating here since this place was "PeeWee's BBQ" 38 years ago. Nothings changed which is a near impossibility in the food service business. The facility is a bit gray around the muzzle, worn booths and bathrooms but really it just adds to the charm and a sense of coming home for lunch. Great pork ribs, brisket and sausage, excellent sides, fresh Tea and servers on top of their game. The meat is wood smoked, not gas roasted with a few chips thrown in. I eat here at least once a week, oftener if I'm in the area. Please don't change a thing, even the booths!

Tom, we visited today and were saddened that things have changed so much

By Shari M |

Let Tom know. Larry ordered the 2-meat plate (brisket & sausage) as he always orders. There was so much fat. When the waitress was told, she said, “it just comes that way.” Since she wasn’t forthcoming in giving him another slice, he didn’t push it. But, later the ticket showed an upcharge of $1 for brisket. He asked why that was and she said there’s an upcharge for brisket, which he explained he didn’t get the full order of brisket in the first place. She was kind of rude and “offended” and said he “should’ve asked for more brisket or asked for it to be lean.” It was not a pleasurable experience and our beers were barely cool. Tom, we are disappointed. Maybe we just came on a bad day but just wanted you to know. Also, we’ve been asking about you when we come in and haven’t seen you. Hope you are well and are enjoying your life. 😊

Great Food, Service, Atmosphere

By Michael |

One of my favorite places to eat in Austin. I love taking my out-of-town guests here to enjoy a meal. The same great food every time. One of the few places I know that still believes in outstanding customer service!

RIBS RULE

By Kevin R |

I went to the Green Mesquite with my sister and nephew. The special of the day (which varies) was a 1/2 rack of pork ribs with two sides (of your choice). The food was fantastic as was the service. There is an area on the patio for live bands and there is on-site parking (albeit limited). This proximate to the Hike and Bike trail, Zilker Park, and multiple other places of interest. It is located just South of the river offf of Lamar Blvdd.

Just ok.

By Ebuny |

Good BBQ but I have had better. I am willing to give it one more try just in case that was a bad day.

👍sliced beef on white bread!

By Hank512 |

I like it real simple and allways order sliced beef on white/ side of those fresh cut fries. The beef is nicely smoked and perfect texture. Not too fatty with nice smoke ring. This, along with those crunchy fries make this a meal I can never pass bye when I am nearby for lunch. Keep up the good work crew!

Dog porch!

By Lynne H |

Pearl the Labrador has been missing her English pubs, so when we read on rover that she'd be welcome on the patio here, we loaded up and headed out. Best best brisket I've had in forever, tender and flavorful and like a bite of the way things used to be. The ribs were good, the pulled pork was just like you'd order in heaven. Though she isn't allowed to beg, Pearl had exercised well at the dog part of Zilker Park, so she was able to sample. Approved by Pearl. And her people.

Nothing fancy but the food is delicious!

By therapy |

We loved that place! My favorite thing was the smoked wings, but the brisket was yummy as well. Nice service, too.

DDD for disappointing

By jetsetletsgo |

We hoped for a classic American bbq and once again didn't find it. where are they all? ribs were undercooked and required a lot of chewing. Brisket was OK. Sausage had a very thick skin. Only went because it was on DDD and expected it to be packed, hard to get parked etc. When all that was easy and only a handful of people in the restaurant we should have been suspicious. On driving away from it we noticed that Blacks was bursting - maybe next time. Its a shame really as its a nice spot and they have live entertainment out back.

Nice food

By chango p |

Nice staff, it didn't take long to get our food. The pulled pork is great, though the bbq sauce is too sweet. Hamburgers are super juicy.

"Smoking the good stuff since 1988..."

By Grant M |

That's their tag line on the cool T Shirts. That and "Horrifying vegetarians since 1988". I've been eating at the Green Mesquite since 1994. It's a "must stop" tradition when we go to Austin...about twice a year. More often than not, the Q is outstanding! On occasion in the past, it was just fair, but like I said, most visits we've been very satisfied and would recommend this place to friends and family.

The ribs here were amazing!!!

By Nunya246Bus |

I went here late one evening and ordered a full rack of ribs. They were absolutely amazing! I love their BBQ sauce as well..... The Mac and cheese was fresh and super cheesy/creamy. Overall this place is one of my favorite places to grab BBQ :)

September 2018

By Maggie E |

We made a point to stop here, after hearing about it on Triple D, Austin. It did not disappoint. Just the smells walking was enough to make you hungry, we enjoyed good wings, a good bbq plate. All with a friendly staff. Guy Fieri know what he’s talking about.

A DDD's recomendation

By HeatherJones40 |

I like to try local places recommended by Diners,Drive-ins & Dives so as this was not too far from Hotel thought I would give it a try. Went for two meat plate, pulled Pork & Chicken with Potato Salad & Slaw washed down with glass of Rose, all very good. Shame it is on plastic plates/glasses but hey it's the food you go for.

Oh the Lemonade!

By Yun G |

Got two chicken fried steaks just for $13! Great balue. Corn is pretty tender. But the highlight is the lemonade, the best I've had in some time.

Enjoyed the BBQ

By gcnoserider |

Ordered the 3 meat plate, brisket - ribs - sausage, and was very satisfied with the plate. Very good taste and service was great as well. Will go back for sure.

Wonderful Variety

By Gloria L |

Green Mesquite has a great variety of food choices. I love the Jambalaya but their brisket and sausage is great too. I really like to order their sides but love their pecan pie!

You can smell it when you walk in...

By LorenWeisman |

Just how good it is. The BBQ is outstanding, the catfish poboy was excellent and the vibe is nothing less than perfect. Great staff and a history if quality to back it all up.

Great music and delicious food

By Gloria L |

I had not been to the Green Mesquite Restaurant in a while and the service, food, and music were terrific. I had a jumbo baked potato with all of the yummy butter, cheese, bacon, and green chives fixings. My friend had the daily special. It was a half of a chicken with two sides. We had peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream. It was all delicious. Our waiter was excellent as were all of the other people there.

Hole in the wall

By Becky J |

Great bbq and so reasonably priced. My husband loved the smoked bbq wings. Loved the laid back atmosphere and the wait staff was amazing.

With apologies to all the vegetarians

By Trish S. |

In the interests of full disclosure, I should confess that I am not wise in the ways of Texas BBQ. I just moved to Austin from Australia so I'm taking advantage of my new home to get myself an education. Today, I went to my first Texas BBQ restaurant EVER and... well, I got thoroughly schooled. And it was magnificent. This place is on Barton Springs Road, just near the intersection with S.Lamar. On a Sunday afternoon at about 5pm the restaurant was about three quarters full, and there were a few occupied tables out back in the courtyard. We headed out back. Right away, our server offered us drinks (we ordered a couple of local IPAs on tap) and when we told him we were new in town and new to BBQ he was very happy to offer his recommendations. We opted for the Two Meat Plate (ribs + chicken) and the Three Meat Plate (ribs + brisket + buffalo wings) and we chose Mexican rice, Golden Velvet Corn and Coleslaw as sides. The beer, and the food, came out very quickly, and he placed a bottle of BBQ sauce on the table in case we wanted some extra flavour. Well, it was bloody delicious. We hooked straight into the ribs (2 pieces) and the meat was thick on the bone, tender and flavourful. I obviously don't have anything to compare it to, but if I had to eat ribs from only this restaurant for the rest of my days, I wouldn't mind. The brisket (two slices) was also beautifully cooked, with a good amount of fat across the top. I added some BBQ sauce to my second forkful but it didn't really need it, I was just curious about the sauce (it was good). The coleslaw was fresh, crunchy and smothered in mayonnaise without being too heavy and the corn was a nice sweet and creamy foil for the meat. There were also some pickles on my plate and they were a nice zingy distraction as well. I finished the meal with the buffalo wings. There were three pieces, and they were sufficiently covered in delicious sauce that I ended up with a decent amount of it all over my face. SO good. Our waiter was terrific, really friends and happy to be of service. He even posed so I could take a photo of the back of his t-shirt ("that's my best side!") Excellent food, fantastic service, and bonus points for not having to queue for hours. We will most definitely be back!

Great BBQ for good price

By Janet W |

Green Mesquite on Barton Springs Rd. is a small casual venue and has outdoor area for eating and music. They have daily lunch specials that are excellent, fine service, and the food is consistenly good. I have to eat Gluten Free and staff is informed on what is GF. Their sauce is GF, which is a plus for me. The lunch specials are available by a plate or sandwich. I love the extra lean brisket and the sliced turkey. Their sauce is seasoned just right without being too spicy or too sweet. The potato salad is excellent as is homemade green beans. If there is any drawback, they serve Pepsi instead of Coca Cola. Pepsi is OK, Oklahoma's OK, but I don't live there. Ice Tea is best with BBQ anyway. Staff is always friendly. If you can eat gluten, try the fried okra.....yum!

Good Chicken fried steak but sub-par BBQ.

By DAS713 |

I have never before written a sub-par restaurant review in my life, but this place just misses the mark with beef and pork BBQ. Within 2 miles of them are 5 EXCELLENT BBQ joints. Their sides are good and their BBQ Chicken gets an 8 out of 10, but other than than its not for me. And I tried it twice. Sorry Green Mesquite,

Best smoked sausage I've ever had!

By littleredeft |

This is a great little diner with a real home town feel. Between us we tried all the meats (all good) but the sausage was by far the best thing ever! Stop in for the atmosphere but be sure to get double sausage...

The best BBQ

By Ted H |

It's the sauce. Heavenly. Couldn't get enough of it. Had the pulled pork. Great atmosphere, sat at the counter, super helpful staff, plenty of refills of their very large drinks. Can't wait to go back!

Excellent Food, even better service!

By Gerald C |

I arrived early to have lunch with a couple of friends. The place was closed for an additional 15 minutes, but they had no problem with me waiting at a table and serving me coffee while I waited. The wait staff were all extremely friendly and slightly entertaining. I had the Friday special: 1/2 rack of ribs with two sides. The ribs had plenty of meat on them and they were cooked to perfection. The sides were a little small. But once I finished the ribs they turned out to be perfect.

Just right

By NJDCO |

The food was outstanding, the portions plentiful, and all priced well. I recommend the ribs, hush puppies, okra, and coleslaw. We ate indoors the first night and outdoors with the music the second night. We preferred outdoors but inside was also fine.

Not even close

By 00seva00 |

This is one of those places where you really wanted it to be good. Its located in a high traffic area and has a nice vibe to it. There's nice outdoor seating with live music in the back. The service was good but the food was a big miss. The ribs were very dry and cold. The brisket was cold and tasted as if it had been sitting in the oven for a while. The pulled pork had dry bits and pieces. I had to drench everything in sauce just to make it taste better. This was my last meal before heading out of Austin. I will visit Austin again, but will never be going to this place again. Bad BBQ in texas IS possible.

A great place for an informal meal and some live music

By Barbara41 |

We had a good meal here, and very much enjoyed being able to sit outside and enjoy the live music while we ate. The pulled pork was very tender, and I loved the peach cobbler.

This place is awesome!

By sunking1899 |

This location looks a lot like someone's house from the outside. So it wasn't a surprise that the inside, despite being a BBQ place, is a traditional but casual sit down restaurant; they do have a few stools and a bar but mostly booths and tables; which I love! They have servers and ours, Katie, was wonderful; efficient, offered great advice about the menu and was friendly. The interior is pure Americana! Hundreds of pictures of happy smiling customers. Our table had picture of a singer who I think I should know and one of a young Elvis Presley. When they say everything is bigger in Texas, it's true. Since I was driving, I ordered water and they gave it to me in, I think, a 64 oz plastic cup! It was the biggest cup of water I've ever seen at a restaurant! My colleague and I ordered similarly, the 3 meat combo; brisket, sausage and ribs! For my two sides, I had green beans and slaw! Everything was awesome! All the meats were moist, juicy and tasted amazing! The sauce was tomato based, a classic, and available at the table in squirt bottles...so good! I wanted to take some home. My colleague told me that around his circle of friends, the Green Mesquite is the place to go in Austin for BBQ. He was so right! When I come back to Austin it will the first place I eat!

Delicious BBQ!

By cjnd2002 |

I can't tell you how excited I was to eat some real Texas BBQ! We live a couple of hours away and have not found a good BBQ place, so when I found out that we'd be traveling to Austin I looked up BBQ and discovered this place. When you first walk in the smoky BBQ smell greets you--you know you are gonna get some good food! The food was delicious and did not disappoint! My mouth is watering just thinking about it! The service was good and there wasn't a long wait for the food. We would go back here again in a heartbeat. Oh, and we loved their slogan: "horrifying vegetarians since 1988." Brilliant!

Great Value Barbecue Restaurant

By Nailcutter |

Came for dinner while in town. Got in right before 8 pm when they close. This is a sit down restaurant with a bit more than barbecue. We all got barbecue. Prices were dirt cheap compared to the other barbecue restaurants in town. $14 for 2 meats and $15 for 3 meats. Smoke Turkey was good, brisket was decent, wings were very good, pork ribs were good and sausage was ok. Cole slaw very good. They are out of most of the other sides. Friendly staff.

Texas style barbecue, and also burgers, chili, and the like

By edq88222 |

Atmosphere and service was very good, parking might be an issue. Lots of "daily specials" at reduced prices, even an "everyday special". We shared a 3 meat platter, which came with white bread and 2 sides. The turkey was the best of the meats, well seasoned and with a smoke flavor. The pork ribs and the brisket were both underseasoned, but salt and the one slightly tangy house BBQ sauce helped a lot, ditto the fried okra. Our dessert of peach cobbler wasn't sweet enough for either of us, Splenda helped.

Cool place, great food, awesome staff

By Jeff B |

Triple D brought us to this spot. Got a ton of food here. Ribs, wings, chicken fried chicken, hush puppies...you name it, I think we tried it. Everything was great and our waitress was super nice. Would definitely go back.

Wonderful meal!

By Kristin M |

We attended an event at the Palmer Events Center, and this restaurant was an easy walk during our lunch hour. The restaurant has a fun atmosphere, and the food was very good. We especially liked the jambalaya that we ordered alongside our bbq!

Excellent food, excellent entertainment

By John C |

Went to the Green Mesquite to watch my friends band (The Sarah Pierce Band) play there. Had dinner while we waited for the show to start. I had a half rack of baby back ribs and my wife had BBQ chicken. Both were excellent. Not the fanciest place in Austin, but if you're looking for real Texas BBQ, look no further then the Green Mesquite. Recommended.

BBQ Lunch

By WallyNNoni29Jan16 |

In Austin, Texas today for lunch. Stopped by Green Mesquite BBQ to get my BBQ fix. If you want BBQ, this is the place to go in while in Austin. Priced very reasonable, under $45 for 3 including our non-alcoholic drinks.

Best Chili Cheese Brisket Fries!

By tawsr |

It’s a regular, when in ATX. I walked in & the Easter Bunny took my order (I’m Santa Claus). She took my order & I proceeded to the beer garden - after a while, I was informed that the Easter Bunny didn’t work there! She was playing w/me. HoHoHo I changed my order to chili-cheese-brisket fries, ate a portion & got Togo. The spud was delicious, nostalgic, & excellent. Keep partying, everyone wants to play w/Santa.

Moist Dry Meh

By verycriticaltraveler |

The chicken was surprisingly the best meat, ribs next, and brisket quite dry. Loved the flavor of the bbq sauce!!! Corn with cream is not as tasty as creamed corn. Cole slaw rather bland. Would go back though for chicken and others seem to have gotten better brisket.

Consistently Good and They Have Chicken

By Terri S |

They have a few more meat options than many places. They're centrally located, especially if you've been to Barton Springs, Zilker Park or Auditorium Shores. You can eat it there, get it to go, or dine on the patio to live music. (Check the schedule.) It's good to have a chicken option and many barbecue joints don't. Their sauce is not peppery, but still tasty, in case there is someone in your group who is pepper averse. They seem to have more side dishes than most, including salads. This is another place with mayonnaise cole slaw. My preference is vinegar, but it's easy enough to make at home.

Nice Place for Ribs

By TripleDRoadTripper |

I wish I could give 3 and half stars. It was not what I was expecting after seeing the Green Mesquite on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. I checked and the restaurant was reviewed in 2009. I guess things have changed since then. The place is fairly small, but I was seated right away. I would describe the décor as rustic. It was definitely a local place. I found the service fast and good. I ordered the Pork Ribs with sides of Coleslaw and Potato Salad. My order came out quickly. The ribs were moist and meaty, with a nice smoke ring. What was missing was the smoke which took away from the taste. That was when I realized what was missing from watching it on Triple D. There was no mesquite smoke smell, not in the restaurant, my ribs and not on my hands. The ribs were still good especially with BBQ sauce and hot sauce, but I did miss the smoke. I found both the coleslaw and potato salad very bland even after adding salt and pepper. Even the raw onion and pickles couldn't help them. Good thing I was there for the ribs. Even though a bit disappointing, given the chance I would return

Awesome

By Debbie M |

The main reason we wanted to come here was the fact Guy Fieri had been here and we watch him frequently. The place we went is off Barton Springs Rd, I believe they have another location also. It's a green building, hence the name (?). We walked in and were greeted by a friendly "hello and just take a seat anywhere". The place is old, worn and cozy - just right - you can tell it has a lot of memories. The inside seating is on the smallish side but there's a large outside seating area, where it looks like they have bands or music at times. Our waitress was busy but always friendly, never rushing us - giving some suggestions. I had the cheese steak taco basket with sides of fried okra and french fries. My meal was great! My husband had sliced brisket and smoked wings and he said the wings were the best he ever had. I'll go back here next time I'm in Austin!!

Fabulous smoked wings; hearty servings

By Beth D |

Another Triple D... not much parking on lot but street parking minutes away. It’s a small front section but a huge area in the back with live music. We found a table inside right away. Very quick service. I got the three meat plate with two sides. My son got smoked wings and hush puppies (fabulous). My plate was $13. Great sauce and homemade ranch dressing; meat was a little dry but very good.

Amazing Pecan Pie!

By Terry_Edwards |

(Beer, Ribs and Dessert) - I passed this place a couple of times and a cabby told me that it was a good place to check out so after my training I stopped in. They listed a number of local beers (I didn’t know any of them) but I noticed all these old Guinness signs so I asked for a Guinness. They had it at one point but not anymore. I ended up getting some kind of “Blue Moon” beer which was okay. For my main I went with the Half rack of baby back ribs, potato salad and Okra. I’ve seen Okra in in the store before but I had never had it before. It was served sliced up and deep fried in a batter. Honestly it tasked like deep fried battered mushrooms. The potato salad was really good but the Ribs… that was another story. I don’t know if my expectations were too high but I was really expecting to be blown away by Texas BBQ. So far, it’s not looking good. Let’s move on to the good part. I love ice cream and I think Pie is pretty good. When I came through the airport I saw all these pecan and pecan products. That had me thinking that they are probably pretty good down here. I spied up this Pecan Pie at the counter and ordered it for dessert. I had it warmed up and served with ice cream. This pecan pie was amazing! The pecans and filling were so good and the ice cream, it was a vanilla bean flavor that was also really good. I would go back there for the Pie! My whole meal, including the beer came to under $25 including tip. That’s a good price for Beer, Dinner and Dessert

BBQ 'r' Us!

By Lisabeth407 |

Definitely not on the usual touristy list of neighborhoods or must-eat-here places, but boy oh boy, this is good cooking! No frills, fine food. Don't pass up the Blueberry Pie for dessert -- a melt in your mouth delight. Very limited wine and beer list, but that's not what you're here for, friend.

Great BBQ

By Michael V |

I had the pleasure of eating the three meat plate here. I had the brisket, sausage and chicken with two sides (fried okra and pinto beans). The brisket was moist, the sausage was spicy and delicious, and the chicken had a nice smokey flavor. For desert I had pecan pie which was enjoyable. Eat here and not regret one moment of it.

Consistent excellence in service and food

Big Mike makes going to the Green Mesquite Restaurant a superior experience. He is kind and so knowledgeable about all of the delicious choices on the menu. Every time I go with friends and family, I discover new treats. I look forward to taking more acquaintances since everyone who joins me is delighted with whatever their choices are.

very good bbq!

We had family visiting from out of state and wanted to share some real Texas BBQ with them. This place did not disappoint. The chicken and sausage were especially good.

What Texas and Austin is all about

By andystonard |

Fantastic. If you're ever in Austin go there. It ticks all the boxes Food was great. The staff were lovely. They are original. The locals were all there which speaks volumes. Support these guys - it's what original expenses are all about. We loved it

Triple d

By advcards |

I think this one falls in the dive category. Had the sampler platter, wings and ribs were good but the brisket was our favorite and worth the up charge of $1. Skip the Mac and cheese bland.

A little tired, but a glimpse of old Austin

By RogerReady3 |

The physical place is more interesting than their food. Old posters and photos make the place fun to visit. It is an old fashioned Austin place that has steadfastly refused to follow any modern trends in cooking. Places like this have been fading from the Austin food scene quickly over the last few years. Smoked wings, 8 for $9.59, were pretty decent, not overdone so they were tasty and juicy. The sauce didn't quite match the other flavors but others with me didn't seem to mind. Frito pie ($5.99) was exactly what you expect and want, chili, Fritos, cheese and onions in a large bowl. Baby back ribs, ½ rack for $12.59, were OK but not outstanding, sort of lacking smokiness, but very meaty. Fried okra was pretty good and the mac and cheese was pretty standard. With their great location, they could certainly use a shot in the arm cooking-wise. It has great potential, but that is languishing and I fear will slowly fade away.

AMAZING BBQ

By Cmouse92 |

Visiting Texas from Canada, we really wanted some BBQ and we found this place. It’s delicious, my boyfriend couldn’t get over how good the brisket and turkey were, and I had catfish which was incredible too. Very nice staff and atmosphere as well :)

Yummy smoked wings

We are from out if town but we have eaten here before, so while passing Austin decided to stop and have family lunch - the smoked wings are delicious and it's a lot of fun to sit outside in the patio while the kids play with the chalk. Good service and food and moderately prices

Texas BBQ on vacation

By kathsum |

We went to Green Mesquite BBQ for lunch after looking up Diners, Drive Ins and Dives and seeing Guy Fieri had been there and also because we had a bad experience at another BBQ restaurant earlier in our trip. The walls are decorated with music posters from years gone by at all of the Austin music locations. It was very interesting looking at all the posters while we waited a short time for our food. Tables were very simple with checkered table cloth with a plastic sheet over it. They weren't too close to each other so that was nice. There is an outside seating area with a stage for entertainment, but we opted to sit inside in the AC. The special of the day was brisket with two sides. I chose corn on the cob and green beans. I'm not familiar with the different cuts of brisket, but this cut was not as fatty as what we had had earlier at another restaurant. Even though it wasn't as fatty it was still moist, but I missed the unctuous fattiness. Because they only use green mesquite, the smoke wasn't too pronounced and there was a smoke ring around the beef. It was well seasoned but not too salty. The BBQ sauce was a tangy sauce with a little body to it. My green beans were fresh and seasoned well. There was some smoked pork and onions to flavor the beans. The corn on the cob was the routine frozen variety. I slathered it with the margarine cup and added s & p and it was fine. Not over cooked like they can sometimes be when they are cooked in advance and held to keep warm. My husband had the smoked wings. The sauce was something we had never had before. It was like a vinegar BBQ sauce with hot sauce added to it. Again, they weren't heavily smoked because of the green mesquite and were cooked perfectly. I believe there was 6 or 8 in the basket. My husband opted for fried okra and cole slaw. Both were good, but nothing really special to speak of. The waitress was very attentive and kept refilling our water and even brought extra napkins. Overall, the experience was a good one. I don't know that I would go back if we lived in Austin, rather opting to try other BBQ restaurants. The biggest thing is that I don't like a heavy smoke on my meat and so that fit the bill. They have beer and wine with good prices and local beers on tap both mugs and pitchers are available. We wanted to try the home made pecan pie, but were both too stuffed to order it.

Ordered online to have sent to hotel room

By generic172 |

Ordered online through GrubHub. Since order was sent to my room I can't comment on physical location. I thought the food was great. I ordered a selection that is not typical of home, northern CA. I ordered BBQ beef brisket and chicken with sides of hush puppies and pinto beans. The BBQ sauce was on the side. The meats were flavorful and tender with or without the sauce. The BBQ sauce was just right, not too spicy and not too sweet. The beans were seasoned perfectly and were a combination of chewy and tender. The hush puppies were delicious - light and not greasy. Everything was seasoned ideally for me.I wanted a combination of seasonings with no one taste predominant. That is, delicious! Green Mesquite achieved this. For dessert, I had their peach cobbler. I would call it peach bread pudding rather than cobbler. Regardless, it was very good, and I wish I had another serving right now.

Cool bbq joint in Austin.

By underground u |

You can catch some local music and good bbq here. Brisket and sausage are tasty. I'd say unique smoke flavor with the green mesquite wood smoked meats. Not your avg bbq joint, affordable. Great little late lunch destination. I think they were on diners, drive-ins and dives.

Good place for barbecue

By RiceWP |

We stop by for lunch on Wednesday and we were glad we did. The barbecue was very good, The service was friendly and attentive and the place had a great feel to it. Give it a try.

Nice Surprise near our hotel

By gacayman |

We had the brisket and ribs. Both were tender and perfectly smoked. Mac n cheese was tasty. Enjoyed everything we had.

The brisket tastes like pot roast

By Shudgon2Blacks |

The service was excellent. The food was disappointing. Good: sausage, ice tea, coleslaw. Poor: canned pinto beans, brisket that looked and tasted like pot roast from the oven, and the pork ribs were dry and bland. The atmosphere was fun and unique. With so many stores doing excellent bbq, Green's goes from average to poor.

Texas Mesquite BBQ Heaven

By Will K |

Firstly, I want to say don't waste your hard earned money at the other BBQ joint down the road. Terry Black BBQ is good but Green Mesquite is just as good at a fraction of the price. The customer service is impeccable. The whole staff is friendly and courteous. They make you feel right at home. As for the food, Mama would be proud! The meats are very tender and smoked to perfection. If you are in Austin, you must stop by for lunch or dinner. You won't be disappointed.

Nice Austin Texas BBQ spot near downtown.

By Klugeco |

A buddy and I ate here after Pitch and Putt which is walking distance away. We shared two entrees - a rib plate and a brisket/sausage plate. Food was good. Beer was cold. We'll be back.

Since 1988, traditional Texas BBQ

By Mary P |

Homestyle BBQ, served with Texas hospitality. Tonight’s special was 2 meats for the price of one. One of us had pulled pork (oh my Carolina heritage will spin in the grave) and sausage...very good. The other plate was three meats: pulled pork, ribs, and sausage. All the meats were good, spicy and fresh. The bbq sauce was lackluster: it tasted too much like ketchup. There was a small bottle of DL Jardine’s Texas Champagne hot sauce on the table- this was good. Homemade peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream finished off the meal. Don’t let the run down look of the place influence you, the food and service are good.

Scrumptious Beef Chili Frito Pie

By Mike D |

First time to try it and it was a good change of pace food. Great taste of chili with chopped beef. It was actually such a big portion that I needed a to go box. Best Frito Pie ever

SoSoTexas Barbecue

By Kburris910 |

Went to Austin to eat at this restaurant because it was on Diners, Driveins and Dives.....obviously not because of the barbecue. Was ok, but not anything special. Service was good and prices, ok, but the desserts we had, peach cobbler and fudge pie were less than stellar. We are from the Katy / Houston area and this barbecue restaurant can't hold a candle to the brisket, ribs and chicken at the Swinging Door in Richmond!

Don't bother trying this place!

By le2cole |

Had the 3 meat plate for lunch. Brisket was dry, ribs dry, sausage greasy. Would not recommend. Not worth writing a 100 character review. I expect more from an established BBQ restaurant.

Great BBQ

By Joanna S |

Great local BBQ and fun atmosphere. Reasonable prices and friendly service. Had brisket sandwich and onion rings.

Better than I had anticipated

By Jerry M |

I always have my reservations about restaurants in a strip mall, but this one proved to be a good choice. I had the ribs/brisket/sausage combo. The meats were smoked to perfection and the brisket melted in your mouth. Avoid the onion rings for the side. They are frozen.

Cool place

By phred209 |

Found this on diners and dives so we tried it. Lots of food good value, decent price. If we lived in Austin I would probably not go back, but for a visitor was a nice place to try,

Good Old TX BBQ

By CBolt22 |

Great pork BBQ and the price is easy on the wallet. The sides were excellent, particularly the potato salad. Not much to look at on the outside. Very hospitable wait staff.

Not bad at all

By Joel M |

Pretty good bbq at a good price. Just love their bbq combo plates. Ribs, brisket, chicken or turkey with a good side of your choice of veggies. Good full bar with booths and tables. Nice, friendly people. Been around a while so they are established. Really like the hush puppies and fried okra as sides. Can't go wrong.

Go for the ribs, skip the Brisket

By Charles C |

I have been to a number of BBQ restaurants in the Austin area, but never Green Mesquite. I had the 3 meat platter, which also include two sides. The ribs were very good. they had a little "tug" to them (which i like). As i took a bite, the juice exploded in my mouth. Nice flavor in the bark. Perfect BBQ ring. The second meat was the sausage. this came as a link, instead of a rope. nice pepper flavor, giving the meat a plenty of punch. You could tell the meat was smoked, as it was red all the way through. The Brisket was dry with very little flavor. good BBQ should stand on its own, but i ended up having to use the home made sauce. adding the brisket to the platter was an extra $1, which was not an issue, but the meat was disappointing. The sauce was tomato base and had a little 'kick' to it. I'd skip the home made french fries. very boring. The Mac and cheese was not bad. but i messed up. the fried okra was almost every table, along with the onion rings. They serve other food as well, burgers, wings, chicken dishes etc. Some parking around the building, but also parking on the street. Old building that really adds to the experience. Staff were great.

Great BBQ

By RaBond |

I ordered the 2 meat BBQ plate. My meat choices were the pulled pork and chicken. For my two sides I ordered mashed potatoes and mac and cheese. The gravy for the mashed potatoes was delicious. The pulled pork was my favorite. There was a great layer of smoke in the pork, and when dipped into the tangy BBQ sauce it was amazing. You also get served white bread, which is perfect for adding the pulled pork, BBQ sauce and pickles to make a small sandwich. I can definitely see why this restaurant was chosen to be on Diners Drive-ins and Dives. This is definitely some good eats, and great BBQ!

Food was decent.

By SDSmith87 |

We ordered the 4 meat plate - with brisket, sausage, chicken and pulled pork. Pulled pork was tastiest but we didn't get very much of it - chicken was next best! Brisket was good as was the sausage but just average to us! The bbq sauce was good. The sides we got were the side salad and mac and cheese and to be honest, these were rather sad. The salad was lacking and the mac n cheese didn't taste homemade. We ordered a basket of fried okra and it was very, very good.

Amazing

By Anthony C |

Great relaxed atmosphere, you got that feeling that there were some seasoned, professional staff members in the building, the service was great, fast and friendly, our server was great, he had a Wolverine beard, (didn't get his name). The bbq was legit, didn't even need sauce, that's always a good sign, the brisket, which is by far the hardest of all smoked meats to perfect, was just that, perfect! Keep up the great work guys!!

Good genuine BBQ

By kkg003 |

No frills, just good ole BBQ. Home made fries. Tasty and satisfying. The BBQ sauce is vinegar based. Lots of meat on the sandwich.

Great BBQ alternative

By akrohn |

Had little desire to stand outside all day for some of the other BBQ establishments and this one fit the bill. Great prices and atmosphere.

Great big Mike!

By Gloria L |

We had family visit from northern Mexico and College Station. Green Mesquite was the perfect choice. The specials for the day had one taker, a 2 meat plate. My husband enjoyed the Jambalaya and I like the frito pie. Our other family members liked the baked potatoes. Everyone has different preferences and everyone was happy with their choice.

Great Evening on the patio.

By Bigredtomato |

There's not much more I can add to the already positive reviews of the Green Mesquite. We brought our extended family here for dinner and had a wonderful evening of Texas Barbecue, live music on the patio performed by a group of talented musicians and made a host of memories. Everyone we saw seemed to be having the same experience. I recommend checking this place out when you are in Austin. It's also close to a lot of other restaurants and attraction I have reviewed.

BBQ Lunch

By JTG_Texas |

I was craving BBQ, and this was today’s choice. Pretty good. The ribs are really good. Perfectly cooked & great flavor. The smoked wings are also good. Our daughter had the grilled chicken stuffed baker (baked potato) which she really enjoyed. The staff is super friendly. They did not have a line around the block, which is in their favor.

Late night good food, nice server, great pricing

By rfuchs0917 |

We were a party of 8 when we stopped in here at 10p! We immediately sat down and ordered. Everyone was very full and happy when we left. I LOVED my turkey sandwich. The hush puppies were YUMMY! Three people with dinner, drinks and appetizers was $40!

Great ribs!

By dmcrmoore |

The ribs were the special 1/2 rack for 10.99 and they fell of the bone so tender and tasted great. Good Sweet Tea. Easy parking and very friendly staff.

What we had been looking for!

By sarahsP1299FR |

We had been looking for an authentic Texas BBQ place during our stay in Austin, and we sure did find it here! We had the three meat plate: brisket, ribs, and BBQ with Mac and cheese and mash potatoes with gravy. Everything was wonderful especially the ribs and mashed potatoes with gravy. Highly recommend while visiting Austin!

Lean Brisket

By jusyelf |

My daughter visiting from New York wanted barbeque when we went to Austin for a wedding .Green mesquite was an unexpected find. Good service, nice lean brisket and good sides. It was busy but we got a seat right away. Lots of regulars there and who wouldn't want to come again. Menu with lots to choose from.good local beer on tap. And a great price point. I can't wait to go back.

absolutely delish!

By Lori |

My husband and I went here for lunch one day, and my sandwich was devine! Piled to the rafters with smoked Turkey and all the fixin's In fact it was so good that we took the kids back there for dinner on the same day! The staff is super friendly and professional, its is just an all around good 'ol place to eat!

The best homemade pecan pie ever

By Mauricio A |

We didn't know a thing about their pecan pie, but we heard something. So after our meal, we ordered one. There's no other pecan pie that can compete with this one. Make sure you leave room for your slice when you come.

Great Texas BBQ

By David C |

I have been back in Austin for the last couple of weeks and have eaten here a couple of times. Personally I think they have a great menu offering both bbq and other dishes. I was dishearten this morning to read in paper about the top 10 bbq places in town and not finding this restaurant listed. Regardless of that I consider this restaurant in good enough to be in the top 10 so give them a chance if you are hungry for bbq. It is just an old time bbq place with a lot of history.

Good BBQ

By caron c |

I am truly into using groupons or discounted promos. My daughter and I were looking for a cheap close BBQ joint for dinner. I was on Groupon and they were offering a 20% cash back using your credit card. I checked the reviews on this place and they seemed good so with the discount we decided - why not. We went at around 5:30 in a Sunday evening. We actually found parking right in front. It's a small restaurant with limited seating and was able to be seated right away. We both decided to try the weekend special- 10.99 baby backs with 2 sides and water. We both had mac and cheese and fried okra. They give you a generous portion of ribs and sides. The ribs were good. They had a nice taste to it. The sauce was good not great. Kinda tasted like bottled sauce. Not sure if they make it. I was not crazy or overwhelmed by the mac and cheese. It was dry. The fried okra was good. Not greasy at all. I wouldn't order the mac and cheese again. Total bill was a little over 21 dollars and I received a 20 % cash back on my card. It was good. If I'm ever in the area close by, I wouldn't hesitate to go there again.

Old school and fun!

By BookGal01 |

Green Mesquite's motto is "Horrifying Vegetarians since 1988" and that gives you an idea of the fun vibe at this place. There were a lot of delicious-looking choices on the menu, but my husband and I settled on splitting orders of Texas Jambalaya (delicious!) and their excellent daily special brisket plate, with sides of fantastic fried okra and mac and cheese. The special even included some really good peach cobbler. Friendly and fast service as well.

Great BBQ and the best Peach Cobbler In Austin

By teresamaria77 |

We came here as our Son was visiting and wanted Texas BBQ we did swing by Blacks but the line was too long. So we came here as we know it’s great food, been here several times before. We ordered Brisket with some extra so we could take some home for later just to snack on! I actually ordered the Peach Cobbler & ice-cream and dug straight into that. I knew if the others were eating brisket they wouldn’t steal my food! Then they ordered the cobbler so I dug into that too haha sweet lunch literally. They loved the brisket you can’t beat it really. It’s such a neat outdoor area you can hang out there for ages. Nice and safe for kids to run around. Indoors is cool too but we love the outdoors and fall is the best. It’s also been on the Guy Fieri Diners Drive In & Dives TV show. There’s always a good crowd there too. If you’re in Austin drop by you’ll be glad you did😊

Good stuff.

By JamaicaDave_13 |

Ribs were excellent. Other meats (as reported by friends) also very good. I wished they had more sauce options.

disappointing

By Jaime |

Poor, poor, poor... across the board. Two meat plate and all I got was 2 1/2 SMALL slices of meat and even less turkey. Portion size for the price is ridiculous... Waiter all over the place with NO help, like chicken with his head cut off. Slow service at all levels... Flavor was... eh, okay. Now I remember why I hadn't been here in over 5 years...

Wing sauce is amazing!

By mhiykmeel |

Stopped for lunch, wife had the sliders, I had the 3 meat combo. Everything was delicious! My favorites were the smoked sausage and the smoked wings. The sauce for the wings is a mix sweet and tangy mix that is the best sauce I’ve ever tasted on wings!

Basic Solid Texas food!

By NewillDB |

We had Chicken Fried Steak, Potato Salad Blue Moon Beer and Strongbow for a down home basic Texas meal. Split a CFS between two of us and that was plenty. So everything is Texas Sized. Add to that the cobbler and ice cream and we rolled out the door.

Very Disappointing

By Nieuwendyk-25 |

I wanted to like this place...long story short, it was nasty! Ribs were trash, brisket was dry, fatty and flavorless. The potato salad was quite good, but I came for the BBQ. The smoked wings were okay, if you like buffalo sauce. There are much better places in Austin, this place the day we went was inedible.

Neat Austin Cafe

By Terry D |

This place looks like Austin from the inside out. You see that they were on the Food Network many year ago and get pumped until you ask what were they noted for and all of the servers have no idea. We had BBQ ribs and brisket, don't waste your money, there are too many good BBQ places in Austin to waste time on it here. We say the catfish at another table and it looked nice and thick. We didn't observe any other food than the smoked wings we had as an appetizer. They were average with below average sauce. This was our last time to go.

HIGHLY RECOMMEND THE WINGS

By AutumneRyan |

Great service. Great wings. Great time. Last minute decision to come here on our travels, it did not disappoint!

WaaaaHooooooo!!!

By Robert R |

This is the real deal in B-B-Que. We started with some chicken wings for an appetizer. I knew we had a winner right away. The wings are awesome!! Just awesome. The sauce is to die for and the wings were cooked perfectly. I decided on a "2-meat" plate, brisket and chicken. The meal was just great. My pinto beans and mac-n-cheese were both spot on. I can only say that this place that you should not pass by. I will be back for some more. I wish I could remember our waitresses name, but she was really good at doing her job. She also had a great sense of humor as I poked a bit of fun her way. There are no down sides to this B-B-Que joint.

Needed BBQ

By Paul S |

In town on business. Friend in the area recommended this - nice atmosphere, great food, easy to get to on Barton Springs Road - had pulled pork, corn, pintos & a beer. Nice!

Somewhat dissapointed.

By Anonymous1024 |

Food was cold, service ok. Cute and quaint setup but did not live up to the name and expectation. Very run down facilities and there was nothing particular to the food, just OK barbecued meat.

Texas BBQ done old style!

By ChristineAndrews2013 |

They know what they're doing. Turkey, brisket and sausage were all old school style and delicious. Sides were yummy! We had jambalaya, hush puppies and potatoes salad and they were all great. Real Texas BBQ sauce, only 1 choice but didn't disappoint. Had this place on our Austin Eats to try list and lucked out staying within walking distance this trip. Good stuff. Friendly staff.

One of the best BBQ in Austin

By TokSha |

There are a bunch of BBQ places in Austin. But the Green Mesquite is an old one. They've been here for ever and always serve great food with outstanding friendly austin style service. The service is with the quality what brings me back. Try their babyback ribs !! Always delicious I think...

Bad Service & Staff Doesn't Seem To Care

By KvnKrft |

Terrible service and the manager, Brian, was pretty rude and didn't seem to care much. I placed an order for some BBQ and noted that if the cole slaw had sugar in it, that I'd be happy without any sides. After 45 minutes of me waiting for it, they canceled my order. I was shocked by the attitude of Brian.

Great BBQ dinner !

By Eric D |

Turned up late for dinner and the staff was very friendly and accommodating. We ordered a big sharing platter of meat which was delicious and reasonably priced ! Restaurant is quiet and clean. Would highly recommend visiting this restaurant.

Horrible food and a terrible example of Texas bbq

By AABerry |

This place has been in Austin forever but I’m really not sure how it has stayed in business. I recently ate there for the first time (now I know why), primarily because it was nearby and my group was in a hurry. The staff was very friendly and service was speedy and attentive, but it was the second worst brisket I’ve ever had in my life (as a native Texan I’ve had a lot of brisket). It tasted like it was several days old and heated in the microwave. I had 3 bites (only because I was very hungry) and was disgusted with myself for eating the second and third. The bbq sauce was by far the worst I’ve ever had. The other two people with me got a burger and a fish Po boy which they said were also awful. I didn’t try it but the burger patty looked gross, like the kind served in a public school cafeteria. This restaurant also doesn’t have any accommodations for gluten-free or other medical issues.

Consistently good and reasonably priced, compared to others

By Norm W |

Is this the best BBQ place in town? Maybe not. Is it consistently good and reasonably priced? Yes! This is where people from the neighborhood go. Most of the employees have been working there for years, so you're not getting served by an inexperienced college kid. I can get a 3-meat plate to go and have enough for two meals. The ribs are my favorite, and brisket, turkey and sausage are good other choices. Their pulled pork makes an excellent sandwich. Their sides are better than most places, too. And I always finish with peach cobbler. Highly recommended. They have other items on the menu besides BBQ. I can recommend their fried catfish plate with potato salad and fried okra.

No one in our large party had BBQ but everything was delicious.

By scott |

From salads to po-boys, a loaded baked potato, and cold beer, everything was very tasty and the service was friendly.

Good BBQ with Specials

By Reg Q |

We enjoyed a late lunch on a cool, wet day and sat inside. I enjoyed the 3 meat plate special while my partner had the cat fish plate so between us we had a nice sampling: brisket, chicken wings, chicken and fish with several sides. Everything was tasty and tender; cooked to perfection. There's a large outdoor patio space for nice days. Staff were friendly and helpful. There's the feel of being at a neighborhood diner where everyone knows your name. We'll be back and we'll bring our friends too!

Just another BBQ place

By Dennismc2015 |

This is the 4th BBQ place I visited on my trip this time. Food was average, and it should have been a clue when it was 6pm and the place was empty. Not bad food but not the best BBQ. Sides were warm to cool, and the Brisket was half fat. No reason to go back, and I should have driven the extra miles to "Salt Lick"

Good brisket and sides

By 381kt |

Preferring neighborhood spots over the big touristy spots we found this place within walking distance from our air bnb. We love the diner feel and ripped vinyl seats. Super friendly staff. We both had the brisket which was so tender and tasted great. I had the chicken which was a little dry and boringly spiced but their BBQ sauce was so good I just drenched it in that. Great mashed potatoes and hush puppies. We also had dessert which we didn't love but it is a bbq joint not a bakery. Prices were so reasonable for the quality and quantity. So glad we chose this place!

OKAY food

By Allison L |

I had the ribs which were okay, the ones I make at home are better, I chose the fried okra and coleslaw which were taste. My boyfriend got the sausage and brisket. The sausage was pretty good, but the brisket was average, he chose the corn on the cob and potato salad as sides. The corn was nothing to brag about and the potato salad was mustard based, we prefer mayo based. Their BBQ sauce is sweet, so if that's what you like you should enjoy the sauce. The waitress was very rude. When we asked for her suggestions she rolled her eyes. There was a live band that wasn't very good and a little on the loud side. All in all I don't think I will go back there again, there are much better places to eat in Austin.

Does'nt Measure Up

By Dennis M |

TEXAS is the SHRINE of great BBQ. However this small, yet attractive place (in a nostalgic kind of way), was a major disappointment being that it is located in the epicenter of TEXAS BBQ--central Texas, and the state capitol no less. The first clue was that there was NONE of that smoky, BBQ aroma that usually one notices even before arriving at a good BBQ joint. That suggested the "BBQ" here was probably not cooked over charcoals or wood on a grill, but in a conventional oven or on (gasp) a gas grill. In addition, the meat(I had pork ribs), did not have a hint of spice or flavoring. I guess the sauce on the side was supposed to cover that up. Really good BBQ should not even require sauce--it should be all about the spices and the slow cooking. Very disappointing.

Great BBQ-joint

By D3an_M0riarty |

Went for lunch at this joint with my brother, wife and 5-yr-old son. We all liked the delicious brisket, ribs, pulled-pork, which all came at a fairly reasonable price. I also enjoyed the authentic vintage style of the whole place. It just feels as if the place got stuck in the sixties.

Worst BBQ meal we've tasted in Texas

By U544NJannem |

After hearing numerous advertisements on SUN Radio, we tried Green Mesquite. The waitstaff was very nice and good. The beer was cold and under $5. However... the food was probably the worst we've had in Austin so far. The brisket was fatty with no smoke ring. The chopped beef was soooo loaded with sauce that it covered the taste of beef. The chicken was cooked many hours(days?) before we got there; it tasted "old" and dry. The wings had good flavor, but were dry. The fried okra was lukewarm. The jambalaya was also lukewarm. The slaw was loaded with mayo. The pinto beans were average. Needless to say, we will not go back. Very disappointed to have found bad bbq in Austin.....

Bubba's Chop Beef Chili

By Joel Wilson |

Good chili, chop beef is very good. Wings are very average. Okra is also very good. Baked potato was average as well. Chili cheese fries are also very good as well.

Good food for sure

By Alice W |

This place doesn't disappoint. Solid, yummy texas bbq. Hole in the wall style. Friendly staff and good price.

One of the best BBQ places in Austin

By David C |

Eat here almost every time I am in Austin. I was surprise with the last BBQ restaurant survey not to find them on it, but that doesn’t change the fact that it is an old established place and locals from far and near come there to eat. So if you find yourself on the Southside of Austin in the Barton Spring area stop in and enjoy a lot of good BBQ and Austin history. Personally I have been enjoying their BBQ for close to 50 years so you can see there is a lot of history here!!!!

Texas Trip

By David K |

WOW !!! WOW!!! we had some very good if not great food in Austin but this place, WOW absolutely THE BEST BBQ I have ever eaten, got 1/2 rack baby back--mouth watering just thinking about them, also got 6 smoke buffalo wings --makes me want to drive the 18 hours back just for another order, wait staff was super friendly ALL the food was just fabuluous

Good bbq

By Phil C |

More good brisket for lunch today. Green beans were cooked perfectly, too. Parking has never been a problem for me. I've been here 3 times over 4 weeks.

Good food and quite "Austiny"

By Rosa H |

This is a small restaurant and certainly nothing fancy, but good food, quick service & priced very reasonably. Just be sure to read the menu carefully, because I ordered the four meat plate (so my husband & I could split it) for (I think) $13.99, and asked for two of the meats to be brisket, not realizing that there was an extra $1.00 charge for brisket, so that was $2.00 more. Now that is still not expensive and it was on the Menu, but I just didn't see it as I would not have thought you would pay extra for brisket. Anyway, just a bit of a question when I got the bill, but, as I said, it was on the menu and the food was very good.

Good Stuff!!!

By jgalaz1 |

Excellent wings. Family was completely satisfied and we have lived in Texas for 10 years now. Would definitely recommend and come back.

friendly place for bbq

By Robert S |

went there with my daughter while visiting Austin in June. We had been out for a long walk through Barton Springs and we decided to stop here for lunch. We sat outside on one of the long wooden tables. The iced tea was served in a bottomless cup with lots of ice. We ordered bbq with sides of potato salad and cole slaw. The waiter was friendly and happy to talk with us as visitors from Toronto. I thought the food was somewhat better than average, not a standout, but the ovderall experience was very good.

Family history revealed!

By tawsr |

My sister Kay & me were out for lunch, since I was local & it was our only chance. First, we tried the Broken Spoke, but no luck (opens at 1600) - instead of giving, we went to the Green Mesquite & Kay revealed that she, Gene & my nephew, Chance, use to live next door (Barton Springs RV Park! (back in the day, b4 Austin changed)…. Kay had a Pulled Pork sandwich w/dos sides. Quite delicious, plus half Togo! I had a dinner salad only. Got to beat the heat, so eat light. Keep partying, I’m going to party “On the Pontoon” at Lake Granbury Texas w/boathouse accommodations. Smoking Trophy Wife & Honeymoon Haze weed!

Friendly service, underwhelming Q

By jmdougl1 |

The vibe here was decent, with plenty of outdoor seating and a live band playing. Draft pitchers were inexpensive. But the BBQ was underwhelming. Dry brisket, and a sauce that fell flat.

Go hungry, leave satisfied!

By NanceYubaCity |

While again visiting my daughter in Austin I wanted to try a different bbq this time. Green Mesquite has a varied menu and everything we tried was delicious! She had the chicken fried chicken smothered in white gravy, mashed potatoes and green beans- the picky eater enjoyed all of it! I ordered the brisket, cole slaw and beans. While I devoured the brisket and slaw, I left the beans opting to use the calories on the yummy peach cobbler with vanilla ice cream instead. We left with a to-go container of left overs for a snack later on- minus the beans. Hole in the wall feel and friendly staff too.

Good Food But Restaurant is Run Down

By Larry C |

I've been coming here for years. The food is very good, but the tables are worn down, the chairs are uncomfortable and there is little room.

Yummy BBQ

By TXnatives |

We went to the other famous BBQ place in Round Rock only to be disappointed with the taste of the meat. I really didn't know what to expect so when I got the combo plate I was really happy with the taste and flavor of the meat. The ribs are tender and juicy, the brisket is very moist and they even leave the nice burnt parts that give you the extra smoky flavor. The sausage was also very good. The sides were also good, baked beans, cole slaw, fried okra and fries. Everyone in our table was licking their fingers after the meal. The only thing I wish I would have gotten was some bread so I could make a sandwich with the brisket and soak up some more of that delicious BBQ sauce. The cobbler was also good. It is a big size so I shared it with the table. The service is great and the atmosphere is good.

Nice homey place

By JK S |

Smallish with very good food and vibe. Good parking in a congested area. Prices low, portions big. Not far from all the sights.

All Hype

By bookofadventures |

Honestly, I don't know how this place keeps getting these awesome reviews. Yes, it's an Austin institution. Yes, it's very conveniently located on Barton Springs. But the food is just not that good. I had been here once before many years ago before our most recent visit. I remember now why it's been many years. We came here for dinner after a neighbor kept raving about the wings. So we ordered a plate of those and a chicken fried steak to share with okra and hush puppies as sides. The wings were actually terrible. I have no idea how they ended up on any "best" lists. They were soft, chewy, uncomfortably big (did they even come from an actual chicken?), and mildly flavored. The chicken fried steak and the sides were mediocre at best. The service was probably the best part of the dinner. It was friendly and quick. Bu honestly, I would recommend just going down the street to Terry Black's for BBQ instead of this place.

Great BBQ expirience

Friendly reception. We went for a late lunch. The BBQ beef was perfectly done. We got their two meat special. The meats were moist and delicious with a side dish. A large meal plate for $12. Have plenty of parking up front in this busy part of town. Definitely return if we are in Austin.

We enjoyed our late lunch at this place. There is a good choice of meats and sides and service was efficient and friendly. I especially enjoyed the brisket, nice and soft with just the right amount of burnt ends. The sauce is nice and tangy. However, my husband's turkey was too smokey for his liking.

Delicious!

Bbq in Austin is more than just Franklins and Salt Lick. Green Mesquite was delicious. Try one of their sampler platters to get a bit of everything. Bonus? Uber Eats will deliver to save you the drive!

Greasy meats, slow service, and watch out for small price print.

By Tony Z |

Brisket and sausage was to greasy. Waitress customer service was slow. We had to keep looking for waitress to get extra drinks and napkins. Watch for small print of prices for additional prices for sausage or brisket even though it was a 3 meat plate.

It was okay nothing special

By MsLaydee808 |

Pros: food came out in under 10 minutes; waiter was nice; and good music played in background Cons: Ordinary tasting food- didn't live up to the DDD hype Saw this restaurant and Diners, Dives and Drives (DDD) so I drove to Austin to check it out. It was average tasting at best. I got the chicken plate with potato salad and string beans. My husband got the brisket plate with mashed potatoes & gravy and mac and cheese. I was hoping I would be dining on food with an overwhelming amount of flavor and taste, but to my disappointment it was average tasting.

Smoked Meat, Best Wings

By Travis S |

Never had smoked wings like this! Smoked then slightly fried- DELISH. Great, polite, knowledgeable wait staff. Love love love this place!

Old school bbq joint, enough said.

This was a late afternoon stop that made dinner unnecessary. I had the 2 meat platter and buddy had half rack of ribs, both with 2 sides. We were stuffed. Check website for menu and music options. Get your Austin bbq fix here!

This location has the same great food that the Barton Springs location does. The staff are all wonderful and the location is great.

Tasty food, outdated dive.

Service was good, price was appropriate, location was convenient. I enjoyed my two-meat plate, but felt that the interior of the restaurant was lacking. It could use updating and a deep clean.

Heard about on Great Austin BBQ - Had to try on our Trip! Family was in town for quick trip. Location was perfect after our bike ride around the Lake. We built up a great appetite and Green Mesquite BBQ hit the spot! Definitely would visit again if we are in Austin TX area!

15th consecutive year visit to ACL & Green Mesquite

Has been our Sunday lunch spot for day 3 of ACL. We love their smoked wings. Chopped brisket is also a favorite. Staff remembers us always makes us feel welcome.

A ZERO IF I COULD

VERY LONG WAIT FOR SERVICE, HAD TO TRACK DOWN A SERVER. The server would NOT listen. She also stood behind the bar and was eating something out of a bowl that she dumped into her mouth. The bbq sauce was AWFUL and tasted strongly !! Of sweet pickle. The manager also would not listen and repeatedly made excuses and kept interrupting. There is great BBQ in Austin and THIS IS NOT IT...don't waste your money or time.

Great BBQ on Barton Springs Rd

By RushCubFan |

I love the feel of this diner style BBQ joint! It's worn, torn and used hard but man, do they make great food here! The pork ribs are better than Stubbs' and the brisket melts in your mouth. Their fried okra - gotta have it! It's crispy with a little heat in the batter but not too much. And I hear their burgers are great but I'm all about the 'Q!!! And dessert. I live their desserts. Pecan pie, of course. One of the best I've had. And the fresh peach cobbler was also put of this world. Don't forget a Tshirt with their message - "Horrifying vegetarians since 1988". I love it! Enjoy!

Best BBQ in Austin, great comfort food too!

I had the sausage and BBQ beef and it blows away the other places we tried, just by looking at the building you'd never guess how superb this place is. DO NOT MISS IT. Cystomer service is one of a kind.

Best smoked wings ever. EVER!!!

By michiganpete7 |

Chose to eat here based on their having been on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives (Guy Fieri's show). The ambiance is unique, and shows their commitment to providing a homey diner vibe. Photos of patrons past and musical groups adorn the wall, and a large "Texas Barbeque' neon sign in the back reminds why you're here. Our waiter was awesome, and had worked there for a number of years. He provided some fun insights on the filiming of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and was very helpful in talking us through the menu. My wife chose their 1 meat plate consisting of1/2-chicken, mac & cheese and slaw. My teenage son chose the two meat plate made up of smoked brisket and smoked wings, with fries and beans. And I chose the three meet plate with smoked brisket, ribs and those TO DIE FOR smoked wings, with cajun rice and slaw. They make five of their side dishes fresh every day, and it showed. The house BBQ sauce is all they provide, but it's enough - very tasty!! One added bonus - the cost difference between the 1 meat, 2 meat, 3 meat and 4 meat platters is very little, making it easy to stay within your budget and still enjoy the amount of food you want to eat. I'll say their brisket and ribs were *good*, no better or worse than much of the other Texas BBQ we have enjoyed on this trip. But again, those smoked wings....

Best BBQ I’ve had in my 50+ years. Get the baby back ribs , Jambalaya and blueberry pie a-la mode and you’ll be in heaven.

Great Jambalaya

By BigPa |

We really enjoyed this little restaurant which was on our Trippe D to do list. It is downtown Austin. The atmosphere was an older building with dining both on the inside and a patio on the outside where they have live music on the weekends. We had a BBQ plate with a side of jambalaya. The turkey and sausage were very good, but the Jambalaya was great. Next time we dine there, which we will, I will order the large Jambalaya plate. It is spicy with link sausage cut in bite sizes. Sit wherever you want while friendly staff wait on you.

old favorite!

great BBQ. Sides are excellent. Plates are a great value. Sausage is my favorite. top notch service!

Just okay BBQ

By unclegonzo99 |

Came here because it was on a Triple D episode. The ribs were tender but didn’t have any smoke flavor. They tasted like they were made in the oven, and the BBQ sauce wasn’t enough to save them. The chicken fried steak was average, nothing to set it apart from everywhere else. I feel like Guy missed it on this place.

great bbq

This was our third try to get bbq every other joint was sold out, but this was suggested by our guide. He wasn't wrong, had the po boy catfish sandwich and the only problem was my stomach was too small!

2nd stop on my Austin BBQ Quest

By Stick N Poke Jimmy |

I have to say it was pretty good bbq. I had the 3 meat dinner. Beef brisket, pulled pork and sausage. All were smoked good not a whole lot of spices though. My sides were french fries and coleslaw. both were good. The highlight was the pecan pie and ice cream. Damn they tasted good. The prices were very reasonable. I thought all the Hogans Heroes memorabilia was pretty cool and soul playing thru the speakers....

Fabulous Jambalaya Baked Potato!

By Gloria L |

We love the chicken fried steak, jambalaya, and barbecue at the Green Mesquite. We also love to hear the music when they have live entertainment. I had a Jambalaya Baked Potato and it was fabulous with chunks of onion, celery, and a variety of different types of meat. My husband enjoyed his Chef Salad with chicken. We ate outside and the flavors seem so much more delightful when I enjoy meals outdoors.

Great stop. Good bbq and more

By BuckyV |

Stopped here with a group and everyone enjoyed this. One of our favorites. Loved the smoked wings and the brisket was really good too. Sides were great. Liked the decor inside as it was not real wArm during our visit would love to go back and visit outside. Good drink selection and the service was really great as well

Great Texas BBQ

By David C |

Hadn't been to the Green Mesquite in several months simply because the last time I was there it wasn't too good. Service was bad and the BBQ was not up to where it use to be. Yesterday I was pleasantly surprised to find that the service was back to where it use to be and so was the BBQ. Not sure what happened but my hats off to them!! I live in Savannah, but travel to Austin several times a year to visit family. You just can't get good Texas BBQ in Savannah do it is a true pleasure to get back to good BBQ. I hope they maintain the level of service and quality of the food. Give them a try if you are in town.

An Austin original

One of my favorites in town. Get the bubba tacos or the cheese steak tacos. The hush puppies are a delight.
