INCREDIBLE Brunch

By Stacy M |

We had the most incredible brunch here. It's located in a cute old house in a fun neighborhood. Food was great, tea was great, cocktails were great. Would high recommend.

100% Perfection

By Leigh R |

What is not to love about this sweet spot? We ate here 3 times during our week in Portland. It was about a mile walk from our b&b, but worth every step. The marionberry jam is fab. The biscuits are amazing! The service is a tad slow, but who cares. The teas are all superb. The boutique next door is fascinating. i am running out of adjectives - just go already.

Brunch at its best

By Diana R |

Great service, interesting atmosphere, eclectic delicious menu items! First visit and our party all enjoyed their choices! If you want to be a true Portland foodie-this is a place to enjoy!

Brunch - Just say yes.

By kbrock116 |

Portland types love their brunch. It was a rainy cold day, but luckily this place is pretty close to the bus line so we had no trouble staying dry. We arrived a little late and were happy to have a very short wait. We even picked up a new Christmas ornament in the little shop that's on the other side of the converted early 1900's residence. The biscuits we had were simply delicious and I could drink that coffee all day!

Brunchtastic!!

By Sharontwfl |

The Bloody Mary's are spicy but not too spicy... Loved them. Craving another one already. The TallBoy and TMB and Pork Hash were all good! Nice staff I am excited to hear how anyone else liked it!

Best breakfast for gf

By Flor A |

Awesome staff! Awesome service! I have celiac disease and the gf food was delicious! I would recommend the gf french toast; it tastes like a cinnamon roll/doughnut:D Will be back again and again!

French toast worth the visit!

By Tracy M |

I have been on a lookout for an amazing French toast in the Portland area. I read reviews about the vegan/gf French toast and it was worth the visit. Tiny restaurant but the food and coffee were both exceptional. Would visit again!

Cute tea shop!

By Stacy M |

Looking for a local brunch spot and came across this! Selection of teas and of coffee drinks is great and their brunch items are unique and delicious. Would definitely recommend!

Patience Rewarded

After the first 2 times of not being able to get to The Hazel Room (1st time - bad experience at the Heathman - don't book online) and the second time they are closed on Mondays - finally! We were there Wednesday, September 24, 2014 and was it worth the effort! The tea room is located in what looks like an 1800's arts and crafts house - gorgeous front porch, original stone and wood architecture and a comfy setting. The employees are very well versed in the making/presenting of tea/coffee/specialty drinks and I was blown away by my tea. It was served to me in a small teapot (after being steeped to perfection) and in an antique teacup/saucer that was pictured on the wall in the coffee bar area. The food was heaven....I had the breakfast sandwich with the flakiest biscuit I have had in awhile. It had green onions in the batter but don't judge - it was not overwhelming - just enough to go mmmmmmm. The fried potatoes were a mix of potatoes, yams, and, I think, cumin. Whatever the spice it was delicous. My husband, who is not a vegitarian (don't judge), ordered the 3 Sisters Hash - a mix of fresh vegetables, kale and a black bean "salsa" - all vegitarian - and ate every bit of this. This place is worth the waiting that we had to do to finally I would definately go back here again.

Family brunch

By Jessica K |

Came here for brunch. Nice atmosphere and excellent service. Very good menu selection and the food was delicious! We had the South West with tempeh and the French connection. Good portion size and cooked to perfection. Very enjoyable breakfast place.

A great breakfast

By margaretcov |

Although they do not take reservations, we were lucky that our wait for a table for four for brunch on a Sunday was only 20 or so minutes. Be aware: The waiting area is quite small and if the weather is wet and cold, you might be outside. Come prepared. We avoided the rain! There is a shop that shares the same entrance and restrooms. It opened before we left and it has some fun and interesting electic items (a nice bonus during the holidays). Brunch is served from 8-3 (which is a nice span of time). The staff is very helpful and friendly (the owners hail from California and brought a lot of skill with them). Practically everything on the menu has a veggie and/or gluten free options. The plates were quite hearty. The BYOB (a biscuit with great insides) was super good. The combination of ingredients is quirky but it works. There are lots of "sides" and a more modest meal can be made from those. This is a Real Portland eating place.

Great Find on Hawthorne

By Max A |

The Hazel Room is small Cafe/Tea Room/Cocktail place.-- I did not know you were there -- until I went to the Hawthorne Street Fair. The building is quite interesting, an old cement block PDX house with outdoor seating. Inside was a very cozy atmosphere, wood wains-coating, turn of the century copper tiled walls and a fireplace to boot. Aviation themed sketches framed on the walls by a local artist. The owners have really put some thought into blending their business with the age of the house. Though very busy the day we found it, we were lucky enough to find a table inside. They were serving Brunch and we dug right in -- I had Tamarind Pulled Pork on Biscuits with gravy - piled high. My husband had an egg sandwich with proscuitto. Both dishes were AMAZING. I topped my morning off with a Golden God -- imagine Champagne with a kick. The menu offers various vegetarian, vegan and gluten free items, soups, salads, gourmet sandwiches and this wonderful brunch on weekends that we were enjoying. I watched other dishes come out in skillets -- and happy smiles on customer faces. The shop offers tea, coffee and specialty alcoholic drinks. I rushed to Tripadvisor to share my experience with all of you -- and to my delight I found I'm the first one to review -- they are fairly new to the neighborhood. I'm pasting their website here, so you can check them out. Really, really a nice place and I would highly recommend a visit. http://thehazelroom.com/ The Hawthorne District is not only a wonderfully eclectic neighborhood but it's a tourist destination and I can't think of a better place to bring someone while visiting Hawthorne Blvd. In addition to The Hazel Room in this charming house-- there is also Mag-Big -- a really fun boutique with lots of jewelry, clothing and art -- all made by Portland people -- a true souvenir for those from out of town. Enjoy Hawthorne and The Hazel Room.

They take their tea seriously

By Louie W |

Sat down with a few friends for brunch, got the Dragon Jasmine green tea, very fairly priced, my cohorts got teas that came in french presses.... the server brought a timer with their teas so we could know when it was done. Very friendly, nice decor :)

Sunday Brunch!

By WaywardWander9 |

It was February, we were cold, but we were on a mission, to get some Brunch at the Hazel Room. We stopped in about 12pm and it was crowded so we put our name down on the sheet by the door and looked around in the store next door. They have coffee by the door, it was so good and warming. The area to stand in is small and right by the front door, but the wait is so worth it. We finally got a seat after a few large groups and smaller tables dropped out. I ordered a mimosa and the hubby had another one of their cocktails. We each had the biscuit sandwich with chicken sausage and potatoes. Hubby also added a salad. The food was very plentiful and came quick. Everything was delicious and we were there for awhile and got to chat with our server about the restaurant towards the end of their open time. I loved this place and would go back so many times if I lived in Portland.

Not many tables, so plan accordingly

By Bryan H |

A while back, I dropped into the restaurant on a lark with a friend, and there was no place to sit. Vowed to come back some day. This time around, I went early to meet a friend for lunch, and he snagged one of the best tables in the place. (Maybe there are five other tables?!?) Ordered a pot of tea, as well as a Bombay Biscuit sandwich. It's a little unclear how you're supposed to eat one of these towering dishes. Maybe they should cut them? I did my best with minimal awkwardness. The food was tasty, and I barely remember the service, which I guess is a good thing. (I went there to catch up with my friend, after all.) There were a few veggie options on the menu, and I was impressed with the tea selections. Overall, a very satisfactory meal. I'd go again.

Fun little cafe on Hawthorne Street

By Ray B |

We stopped at this restaurant for brunch while meandering down Hawthorne Street. It is a funky little place located in one of the old houses that dot the street. Nice decor, friendly wait staff, very good food. The food is definitely not your average American fare. The restaurant serves locally-sourced dishes that are off-beat and quirkily-named. My wife had the "Bubble and Squeak" (a traditional English vegetarian hash) and I had the Breakfast Boat (potatoes, spinach, and country gravy). Food was very appetizing. The Hazel room does serve meat dishes but also serves vegetarian and gluten-free dishes. It also has a very nice selection of teas. Seating is limited--four or five tables inside, and several more outside on the front porch. Definitely worth trying out.

Great menu

By linoaktown |

The Hazel Room has many delicious offerings, particularly for brunch. I ate there on a weekday morning. Liked that the menu was not overwhelming. Good hash. They also have some nice warm cocktails they call "warmers", some tea based like the "Hot Nurse" -- blend of tea, ginger, lemon, honey, and a splash of bourbon. Very comforting. Shares the property with another retail location and a lot of fun vintage shopping nearby. Service is cheerful and attentive.

Good vibe, got character

By Asha S |

Visited this place on a trip from interstate; good vibe, not a long wait, great service. Minimalist tasty menu which was a nice change as I fine most places have excessively long menus lacking character and interesting options. Pleasantly charming.

Long wait. Food was good

By Alaskan_Viking |

Very long wait for Brunch. Recommend to have lots of free time. Parking can be tight in the streets. Tables are small and low. Was crowded for me. Chairs were mish-mashed at our table. Front of the place is a great picture spot. Take advantage of your Black and White settings. Food was good, Service was good, Bloody Mary was ok. Vegan and Carnivore can eat here. Cost is about the same in other Portland Area Brunch places. Overall, Hazel was clean and the shop was a good addition while we waited. Clever theme.

Unexpected lunch

By aztrimom |

Nice change of pace for lunch with my daughter. Exceptional service and food- unusual dishes made with fresh ingredients! Try the toad in a hole

Yummy breakfast!

By N C |

This is a cool old house remodeled into a little cozy restaurant with a neat store attached on the main floor. We had breakfast and they really knocked it out of the park. My husband had the breakfast skillet with purple, bacon, eggs and goat cheese that was fabulous! I had the French Toast Brioche that was heavenly! Soft and fluffy...dusted with powdered sugar and fried bananas! Yum! The menu is adventurous and intriguing. They really know what they are doing here! This place rocks!

An interesting nook for brunch

By zellis00 |

It's a small nook with character. The kind of place you find in a small town, which is fitting for the Hawthorne district. Not an overwhelming large menu but still a variety of items. Good portions. A delightful stop.

What a great find!

By Mary B |

A friend told us about this little restaurant on SE Hawthorne and we're so very glad. An old house that's been remodeled into a restaurant and shop, the staff was amazing but it's the food my husband and I are still talking about. We each had one of the French toast variations for breakfast and really enjoyed it. We also wanted to sample the savory cheddar onion biscuits so took one to go. So glad we did. Definitely a good find for a fun meal in a unique setting.

Perfect breakfast with gluten free options

By JMchgo |

Our family of four sat outside for breakfast. The gluten free coconut-cardamon french toast was delightful and filling. Everything was cooked perfectly. One member of our party order eggs over medium. They arrived at the table exactly as he hoped. One meal came with a fruit cup. When it arrived we were pleasantly surprised to find apples, pears & berries with mint. So many nice touches and wonderful options for people with food allergies.

Cute little spot

By Amanda M |

Hubby and I were walking down the street for a place to stop and have a warm drink and food. We came across The Hazel Room and it was exactly what we were in the mood for! The coffee and tea were nice and hot (we got ours spiked). Food was excellent too! Hubby got a pulled pork sandwich and he claims it's the best he ever had! Nice relaxing atmosphere to enjoy your partner's company or a good book!

Good options and awareness for people with food allergies

By MJBSLC |

As a gluten-free & dairy-free consumer, I was very pleased to have many choices on the menu. The service was very prompt, our server was personable, knowledgeable, and patient. We all enjoyed our dishes. The interior of the building leaves something to be desired but the table on the front porch was delightful.

Sweet and savory

By Stephylee |

I get a group of ladies together to brunch and catch up, this was our most recent outing. There were 6 of us, and note they don't accept reservations and the place is not large. We arrived at 10:30 and probably waited 20 mins, it was much busier as we left. There's a cool little retail shop to peruse, and you can order a coffee, chai etc while you wait. Some great unique combos, gluten free, veg options. The favorite bug hit at our table was Gluten-free toast in coconut-cardamom batter. Topped w/maple syrup, candied pecan & coconut flake. Need I say more? A multitude of drink options, I had a sticky rice chai it was delish. . Other places we passed by Like Jam had a line outside, we would return again.

Sandwiches - Yes; Pans of Slop - No

By Ellie S |

The sandwiches - especially breakfast sandwiches - are excellent. The soups are decent. The weird pans full of potatoes are horrific.

Unexpected food combos are delicious.

By Patti C |

Not quite a Portlandia-long waiting line for Saturday brunch. The food was worth it and being able to shop at the adjoining boutique was fun, so the time passed quickly. The service on such a busy day was excellent, and we loved the food. The savory biscuit dishes were tasty and we shared the pumpkin pancake rollups for dessert. YUM!

First Stop, Sets the Bar High!

By DTBG |

Our first stop in Portland and we were STARVING, the menu is not huge but all the possible combos made it a bit overwhelming... fortunately our server saved the day by suggesting the perfect biscuit sandwiches and sides for all 4 of us, and they did not disappoint! (How could they when the biscuits alone we're to die for!) Eggs, cheese, a little meat, some greens, some gravy... Unbelievably hearty and savory...wish I had room for dessert!

Hidden Gem!

By Stephanie A |

My favorite meal here is brunch. They always have seasonal fruits and vegetables, a la cart sides, and excellent coffee. If you on a vegetarian or paleo diet you can eat here and leave happily full. The staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the restaurant is pretty pro-tiny humans. Beware, they are closed on Wednesday’s.

Fantastic food and beverage

By Derek F |

Great food choice and drink options. . Well thought out and different takes on old favorites as well as new to us cocktails and brunches. Staff fun and helpful. No wait really as you can order your drink and hang outside until table ready!

Delicious food and cute atmosphere

By Cece N |

They have a large beverage menu ranging from teas to warm and cold alcoholic beverages. The vegetarian mushroom gravy and biscuits were amazing. I would definitely go back.

Great Spot for Brunch

By jackiebr63 |

Absolutely a wonderful place for a delicious, large, & gluten free if necessary place to eat. Their green onion biscuits so good both as a huge breakfast sandwich or on their own. I had their enormous breakfast sandwich filled with a yummy cheese omelette with avocado and side of salad. My daughter in law had a similar sandwich with their house potatoes and it was great on a regular green onion biscuit. Just wonderful food and another nod to the huge variety of gluten free food in the rose city. One caveat, this place does not take reservations so arrive early as people wait in line before it opens at 9:00 am.

Great Breakfast Menu, Great staff

By g b |

This is a fantastic place to come and eat. When it's nice outside, sit on the sidewalk style cafe, and enjoy great breakfast, and fine beer. I loved the Ginger beer. The breakfast menu rocks and the girls are pretty, and friendly. I'd have to say that the breakfast menu competes with one of the best I've had. Portland has its little jewels of a place, and this place was found to be cool.

A flavor adventure!

By BlueHighwaysGal |

Who would think that this cozy cottage would house such an adventure in eating? Allow time to study the varied and appealing menu - the combination of flavors is definitely off-the-beaten palette, and this chef knows food. From the praline-bacon on the turkey cranberry goat cheese sandwich to the walnut-miso slaw and the beet breakfast skillet, each food item is thoughtful, creative and delicious. Try the hot blueberry tea cocktail - it's elegant!

a w e s o m e

By Ashley M |

Definitely one of the highlight of Hawthorne and Portland, in my opinion. The menu was exquisite and varied, I had a really hard time choosing what I wanted. I ended up ordering the Tall Boy, which is sort of like a sandwich - made of biscuit as the bread, with pulled pork, egg, sauce, and more that I don't remember. It really was a fantastic place - we sat outside on the street level and had a nice picnic table to ourselves (party of 3) and the waitress and service was great. Throughout our meal the servers visited to make sure there wasn't anything we needed. Would wholeheartedly recommend, and visit again.

Little Lovely Space

By .KK. |

Dropped in for breakfast at 9:30am and was able to be seated right away which was great for a Sunday. The space is small and cozy, but comfortable. Staff was friendly and able to all our questions about the menu. Ordered the biscuits and gravy (mushroom gravy, not the red eye), as well as a plain biscuit and jam (I am a sucker for a good biscuit). Both were delicious, as was the chicken sausage that came with the biscuits and gravy. A ton of food for a reasonable price. I’ll be back. Can’t wait to order something else off their menu.

Nice place but food is average

By PBB-HPB |

This is a pretty nice place - funky and pretty. Connected to interesting place for clothes. Wait staff was average - nice but a little disconnected. The tomato and cress salad with prosciutto was pretty sparse. The huevos rancheros were passable. Darjeeling iced tea was pretty weak. Not much for $35 plus tip.

Biscuits!!!

By Giselle E |

Their biscuit sandwiches do not disappoint. Had the Barcelona and it was amazing! Great little spot.

MMM BRUNCH!

By Jetkay |

A friend of mine took me to brunch at the Hazel Room while I was visiting her in Portland. It was delicious!! There was a little bit of a wait, but a very cool store is connected to the resturant that was fun to browse through while we waited. Very hip vibe!

Beyond amazing

By Inge S |

Truly the best restaurant I've been to in Portland so far. From the cocktail to the Thai breakfast to even the biscuit and caramelized grapefruit (I don't even like grapefruit!), perfection. Every bite and sip has a beautiful melody of flavor. Needless to say, I am very pleased -- the service was excellent, environment A+, just come here already, you won't be disappointed.

Delicious and worth the wait!

By Wendy G |

My family and I ate here and we all thoroughly enjoyed our dishes, except the soup was cold. Happily, the management took it off the bill. When we arrived at this very small, quaint restaurant we were in for a long wait. We opted to sit outside under a covered roof because we had to get some people to the airport and didn't have time to wait for indoor seating. It was pretty chilly outside but we did it. Our food took quite a while to come out so if you're in a hurry just keep that in mind. The food was delicious and worth the wait! I had a BYOB biscuit with egg whites, sautéed onions and chicken/apple sausage. I was VERY happy, to say the least! The biscuit had cheddar cheese and scallions baked inside it and I could have eaten more of them! The others enjoyed the turkey sandwich and some other BYOB's.
