Sushi and tapas in OB

By Suzanne92107 |

Interesting and creative sushi menu - very good sashimi and unique sushi rolls (try the "Joint"). They also have an extensive menu of other food - from small plate appetizers ("tapas") to full dinner items. This combo makes the Joint a good place to go with groups - there's something for everyone. Excellent beer taps (local craft beers and Belgian beers), and they always have a daily special beer (Tuesday is $2.50 Sculpin night). Good happy hour menu, with discounts on beer and on select sushi and tapas. It's a small place and often crowded, but always worth the short wait.

Wonderful food!

In one week we visited this place twice. The food is so so good. The menu is full of great options. I had the salmon taquitos, the joint roll and I can' t wait to come back again. Good service . I love this place!

Great sushi

We came across this place while walking in town. Stopped and boy were we glad we did. Sat outside and the service was great. Amazing menu and well priced. We ordered a few rolls and they were delicious greasy and tasty. Highly recommend if you r craving good sushi

&@$! Good

By mfheinonen |

Wow, we loved this place! The hand rolls were awesome, the service was fast and efficient. This’ll become a regular stop for us!

Great food, excellent service and it opens till late!

By jcmadrid |

We went there last night and I must say it´s the best place we´ve been to in the Ocean Beach area. Very friendly service, with a quiet atmosphere where you can actually talk to the people you´re with. The food is excellent, nouvelle cuisine style, with delicious Sushi and salads. Very good wine list, with a specially good Spanish Ribera del Duero. Above all, it´s the only decent place in Ocean Beach that´s open until late (11.00 pm) so I recommend the place 100%

Quite a production!

By JOM922 |

Excellent sushi and tapas are reasonably priced and taste great. We are local and go on Tuesdays for $2.50 Sculpins and sushi. Never had a bad one of either. Servers are very attentive. Other beer selections are wide, local, & excellent. Food comes almost too fast if out for a relaxing evening. It is noisy.

You will love this. Guaranteed

In OB for the day. Stumbled upon this fantastic place. Relaxed, great menu, nice room and friendly staff. Clean bathrooms close to beach! You'll thank me. Promise. Enjoy

Simply Delicious

By TK6299 |

Tapas and sushi... Who knew? Fresh organic locally sourced items make a wonderful menu. We went with sushi and a bacon Cesar salad. Based on what we had, I wish we could come back over and over again so we could try all the items on the menu. Delicious. Also a great choice of beers and an incredibly friendly staff all around. You should try it out!

Food was very good, the local a bit crowded

By arjo68 |

Very tasty and well cooked meat, the appetizer-sushis fresh and tastefull. Crowded and a bit loud but good ambiance. Nice service. Good wines by the glass.

Nice vibe for this local surfing town

Nice spot to just go and enjoy some Sushi and drinks if you are not in the mood for touristy places. Reasonable and easy to access.

Expert Sushi Experience

By ColeyBert |

The Joint was recommended by a local bartender when we asked about good local sushi and we're glad he did. As a general rule I would avoid a place that did both sushi and tapas as being a little out of focus, and I confess we didn't even try the tapas, being in a sushi mood. On a busy Saturday night our server took the time to explain the extensive sake list, and on her recommendation we tried a new one which was excellent. The garlic edamame was fantastic, as were the fried shishito peppers, and our set of "special" rolls were creative, delicious and very distinctive. Only caveat: these people have no idea what spicy means...the "spicy" rolls were flavorful and had a little zip, so if spicy food makes you nervous go ahead and try it. But if you like to have your eyes water, and to break out in a sweat with your peppers (like my husband) it won't happen. Tasty indeed but not hot. Still, great service, great location, great sushi. We'll be back.

Fun dining for everyone

By El G |

A great choice for a delicious dining experience with a funky atmosphere. Located on Newport Ave right in the heart of downtown Ocean Beach, we walked in and was seated right away. A wide variety of choices from sushi, pizza and vegetarian. Delicious micro brews available as well.

Hasnt Lost a Step

By sccrref |

You know a place is good when there are 2 other sushi places close by and the only one hoppin is the Joint. We visited OB area w/ our son who lives near by and had dinner 1 night and then stopped in for quick couple of rolls after visiting nearby local brewery. I think they have one of the best salmon skin rolls ever and their mushroom polenta tapa is really really good. Have never had any sushi there we didnt love. Fresh and creative. Not to mention terrific beer selection. Only complaint- they need more then a single bathroom. On a weekend night can be a line!

Quality beyond description!

By Megan A |

From the first taste of any of the "tapas" available, or the artisan sushi, or the craft beers, it is clear that high quality is top priority at this place. We came with a large group, including 5 kids, and ordered many small plates of food that we joyfully shared. Every bite was a taste of heaven! There was freshly made squash soup, original sushi combos, rich mac n cheese for the kids, seared salmon tacos, and more variety than I could begin to describe. Our large group got seated on couches in a living room like area in the back that was perfect for the kids, and the wait staff was kind and attentive despite the big crowd that comes during the Farmer's Market right outside on Wed. afternoons. I recommend this place above all others in SD!!!

Peanut Butter Stout!

Sushi was yummy!!! Beer was better! Devon was awesome! Super friendly and cute place....Oh....And it was hot as hell outside and they had A/C!!!! 😃

Don't Judge Book by its Cover

By Aleta w |

From the outside The Joint looks like "a joint". I expected it to be a typical beach beer joint, but it is far from that. The interior is well designed, cool, and seating is comfortable. The staff are attentive and the food is good. Additionally, the art on the walls is tasteful and interesting, the pièce de ré·sis·tance is the mural in the bathroom. Hubby had a california roll and I had a greaat spinach salad. He must have liked the roll, because before I could ask for a piece, it was all gone. Definitely check this place ouut.

New Years Eve

By CaptSy |

Had a great experience New Year’s Eve with my girlfriend. There was a lengthy wait when we first got there but we didn’t have reservations so no biggie. We were able to give them our phone number and got to explore the area while we waited so it was a blessing in disguise. The service was good but the food was amazing! Slightly pricey but that’s Cali. Carful ordering the large saki, it’s a 1.5L and over $80!

Off the Charts...Outstanding

By Gary P |

This is worth a special trip up to Ocean Beach. I can best describe this is as an eclectic combination of Continental and Asian cuisine in a very laid back Ocean Beach type setting. This was so incredible, I went back a second time on vacation, something I almost never do. The first time I had an arugula and roasted tomato salad with white balsamic vinaigrette dressing that is one of the tastiest salads I have ever eaten. I also had absolutely sensational fried calamari...perfectly greaseless, nicely spiced batter and really good dipping sauce (a homemade marinara and sweet chili sauce.) I also had the homemade fries with truffle oil and almost had to go to Confession...it was that sinfully good. The next night I had the calamari again (and again it was sensational) and this time I had one of their special sushi rolls "The Train Wreck" (tempura shrimp, cucumber, spicy tuna, topped with albacore, avocado, green onion, eel sauce, & finished with spicy mayo) and I thought I would again have to go to Confession. Usually I "come back to Earth" after eating at a great restaurant...but it is a few weeks later and I honestly think this food was memorable, the atmosphere was great (love the vibe and the eclectic mix of music), the wait staff incredibly knowledgeable about the food... well, any trip to San Diego in the future for me will HAVE to include a return visit to this extraordinary restaurant.

Awesome Sushi, Pitiful Locale

By HoustonFoodAndWine |

On our final night in San Diego my wife & I, along with some friends, dropped in for dinner at The Joint. While loud, a bit cramped, dark, and somewhat dingy, the restaurant's sushi offerings were the star of the show. Fresh, flavorful, and quite unique, I certainly wouldn't mind eating the food itself here again. However, I doubt we'll return to The Joint because of the overall locale (i.e. Ocean Beach). This trek into "OB" (as it's called, apparently) was my wife & I's first visit to the area and we just weren't impressed - nor were our friends, who live in San Diego but had not been to Ocean Beach in years. Between the dingy establishments, the homeless / vagrant population, the overwhelming smell of marijuana, and the occasional whiff of urine, I'd say Ocean Beach's positives are outweighed by its negatives. I left thinking to myself, "Why would any local governing authority allow such a potentially pretty place become such a social cesspool?"

Horrible food

By Nick J |

Horrible food but good drinks though… they should serve just alcohol. Place it’s ok needs some vibe. Don’t recommend this place at all

We could have eaten all of our Ocean Beach meals here

By Lisa L |

This was a total surprise to us when we wandered in looking for relief from some unusual heat and humidity. This area of Ocean Beach close to the water can be--depending on your mood--funky and hip or smelly and dirty. The Joint is a kind of civilized oasis without being pretentious or snooty. The marvelous food, décor, music, and wait staff would entitle them to be snooty, but they are instead talented chefs and accomplished and personable servers. We happened in during brunch on a Saturday and made a point of going back for the same the next day to try a couple more of the offerings that had been hard to pass up. Everything we ate was delicious. If you are there for brunch, get a side of fresh fruit for the artistry in it alone. For the overall quality of the experience I consider the cost for two meals, two drinks, and that lovely fruit plate to be perfectly reasonable ($45 including 20% tip). Sushi and tapas is what they advertise, but there is something for everyone here.

Sushi AND Tapas? You bet!

By whiningyapper |

A great little place in Ocean Beach. We stopped in on a Friday night and were lucky to grab a table in back. Fabulous fresh fish and an interesting and unique selection of sushi rolls with locally sourced ingredients. Try the Mary Jane roll - so delicious! Friendly and accommodating staff who go out of their way to meet your needs. Can't wait to go back.

Good

By Gobblooth |

The sushi options were fun and creative. Definitely suited our sushi craving and were quite happy we stopped in.

Sushi perhaps a bit too 'experimental'

By David |

Came here for dinner on Friday evening. The place was really busy but they had a useful system whereby you registered your place in the queue and texted you a link to an app which showed you when they were ready to seat you. Between us we asked for a green salad and olives to start and then some sushi. Rather than the olives coming out first, it was one of the sushi rolls. The olives and the salad then came out in quick succession whilst we were still working on the sushi. So while the speed of service was good, you were left with a table filled with food you weren't ready to eat. Bit more co-ordination required perhaps or clarification with the diners which they would like to have first? The sushi was reasonable but sadly I didn't see evidence of the quality that other reviewers seemed to experience. In one of the rolls we had the sweet potato seemed like it was too raw and not ripe enough. In the second roll we had, which advertised soft shell crab as its first ingredient, there was barely any filling and too much rice.

The Joint Roll Rocks

By Jessi_Ann37 |

The Joint Roll is made with fried crab and its a tad spicy with shallots and green onion it was the best sushi roll I have ever tasted!

Surprising Find, a Jewel in Ocean Beach

By virginiarn2017 |

After walking the streets of Ocean Beach in search of a Sunday evening meal, we were frustrated by long lines at the most popular spots and needed to find something to also accommodate our hungry toddler grandson. Not happy with the looks of most of the establishments (most appeared to be simply bars) we stumbled upon The Joint. We were able to be seated almost immediately, dubious that “no waiting” might mean “nothing to write home—or Travelocity—about. We were genuinely surprised with the ambiance of The Joint and quality of the food. The ornate ceiling and large carved mirrors were unexpected in this beachy area. The service was excellent and the food was so varied I can’t remember all the details. Highlights: Sushi, tapas, macaroni and cheese that was heavenly, great beers. For a bit of the unusual, great food, and great servers, we highly recommend The Joint.

Delicious Food

By Aries808 |

My friend and I had dinner here, we came during happy hour so I took advantage of their salmon tacos and shrimp tempura roll. Both dishes were so good, the salmon tacos were little street tacos that cost three for $7 which was a pretty good deal. My friend ordered the crispy skin chicken breast which looked and smelled delicious. The service here was excellent, the people very friendly. The restaurant has indoor as well as outdoor seating, we sat at a table by the window so we were able to people watch. I highly recommend this restaurant not only for its food but also for its proximity to the beach.

The Joint is a great OB joint!

By SDTraveler01 |

It definitely is a great place to go for a bite and/or a drink. I've been here several times, and have recommended it to friends, and it never disappoints. Atmosphere - cool, classy, dark red walls and patterned copper tile ceiling, custom-build red oak bar, chandeliers, but still feels comfortable - you can come in casual, straight off the beach and fit right in. Service - SO friendly and welcoming; the owner brothers CJ and Joe Gladstone from Ohio are great. They greet everyone like they're old friends. Food - Wow. Everything I had was amazing - I have to say my favorites are probably the salmon cakes (so crispy outside; moist inside); clams/mussels, mac & cheese (perfect comfort food), the fresh greens (super garlicky and fresh) and the blakened salmon tacos (amazing combination of flavors - cilantro slaw and fresh corn). Chef Brendan McCormick (formerly of Ole Madrid) is amazing. Drinks: nice selection of reasonably priced wines and beer. I liked the Sauvignon Blanc by the glass. Prices for food (and drinks) are very reasonable for tapas-style portions - almost everything is $4-8, with a few items $11+. The ribeye was the most expensive item on the menu at $14. The sushi is also very interesting and tasty -- the salmon w/ lemon basil particularly stands out, but a couple of the spicy ones were really good too. Check it out!

So so

By Lafemmeavecchiens |

Atmosphere was nice, service was good. One bathroom stall for a large restaurant so there was a constant line. Chefs choice nigiri was uninspiring...10 piece was 5 of 2 of the same standard pieces (salmon, scallop, tuna, yellowtail, albacore). Boring! Spicy seaweed salad was not good and the pickled carrot tasted wrong. Cali rôle had maybe a millimeter of avocado...so couldn’t taste it at all. Not thrilled, should be more for the price.

Ordered Take Out

By Melissa G |

We got several different kinds of sushi and a salad for take out. Everything was delicious. The service was great even though they were very busy!

Fun environment but a disappointing night.

By paula a |

My 22 year old daughter and her boyfriend love this place, and are regulars. I can see why. Unfortunately the night I joined them did not make me want me to come back. Very lively, and great pub like atmosphere. But, Extremely noisy. Prepare that you have to scream to the person sitting next to you to be heard. Unfortunately our waitress completely forgot about us. Didn't even come to take order for 1/2 hour. Then food was delivered an hour after that, and was wrong. What was supposed to be a quick early dinner and night , turned into 3 hours. To top of the night there was a woman floundering around so extremely intoxicated. She was going up to tables and talking complete nonsense. Im shocked management did nothing about it. For the patrons and,for her own safety. Food just ok.

best food on Newport

By 55678abigail77 |

The Joint has far and away the best food in OB and is reasonably priced. Unless you want tacos eat here

Wish I could rate it 4.5⭐️

By Amy H |

Found through trip advisor and not disappointed. Large variety of food. Good portion sizes and good service. Only downside was noisy/busy. Glad we ate outside at one of the few outdoor tables available.

Lovely restaurant!

By celinecamon |

Such a nice restaurant! The staff were super friendly and helpful! Our server in particular was extremely helpful! 5* food and a great atmosphere along with very efficient service.

Great food! Great atmosphere!

By Starnelstone |

My husband and I dined at the Joint during our stay in Ocean Beach in September. It has a really relaxing atmosphere inside. We live on the west coast of Canada and frequently enjoy great sushi. The sushi at the Joint was really unique and delicious. We tried "It's always sunny in Philadelphia" rolls and they were amazing. We shared a salad and a vegetarian roll as well. Everything was unique and delicious. I highly recommend the Joint.

Great Happy hour

By ERCLADY |

We visited this restaurant for a happy hour. Great selection of beers! Sushi rolls for $5 and also tapas! Everything was delicious! Eclectic restaurant with a great atmosphere and friendly service!

Cool Vibe

By Kaleb Y |

The food was great. We had a variety of dishes from the cheese plate to the "psycho roll". Try a variety.. probably won't be disappointed The place is kinda like a bar setup. Not tons of room.

Wonderful, large mussels!!

By Klgusty |

We came to the Joint for the mussels and were so thrilled with the options of sauces and the large, plump mussels that were served to us. These mussels were the highlight of our trip! The Mariana and Goat Cheese was also pretty good, but ask for more toasts to sop up that great sauce. Very popular, so had to wait a while to get in. Not a lot of dining room seating, more bar and window-side tables.619-

Interesting mix of foods-in a good way!

By Diane E |

You can get Asian sushi, French mussels and soup, Mediterranean salads and olive sampler, Mexican tacos, and Spanish tapas! It sounds weird, but it all goes good together.

Yummy quick stop in...

By mandy l |

Stopped in for a quick bite & two beers before our uber ride back downtown. We came to OB on Wednesday when the market was going on outside & we just happened upon this place. Very good beer, we had a saison, can't remember the name, & good asian chicken sandwich on the HH/bar menu. Our first time to OB & I'd come back to this spot again! Great service too. Our waitress was very cool. :)

Another great spot near the beach

By jmasci |

After a long walk up north I decided to drive down to Newport Ave for a walk out to the beach and some lunch. This place caught my eye while I was driving (and driving) around looking for a parking spot on a Friday afternoon (note - go a few blocks off Newport Ave). I'm a big sushi fan so I decided to give it a try. This restaurant has lots of great pluses. + Ambiance (of sorts) - cool decor and even better selection of music, perfect for a "Joint". + Selection - beer (more than you could choose from), hand rolls and awesome selection of custom rolls. I'm a big fan of sushi restaurants that tailor their specialty rolls to the region. I will definitely try this place again, if for no other reason than to sample more of the beers and the specialty rolls!

Great Place

By Betty C |

wow, the food was great ,the drinks are great ! The people that work there are amazing!!!!!!! Thank you

Great Food/Atmosphere

By jeremiah4strings |

The food was great, service was great, prices were reasonable-overall fantastic experience. We picked the Joint for dinner after we watched the sun set at Sunset Cliffs. It was about a 15 minute walk. We were feeling adventurous and didn't know what we were getting into. The place was pretty crowded, and it was a very comfortable vibe. We were seated right away. They have a good selection of craft brews on tap, and a somewhat strange mixture of menu choices, which actually worked quite nicely. We had "The Joint" sushi roll which tasted almost like Mexican food- simply delicious. We also shared the blackened salmon tacos, and the hipster roll. All thumbs up!

Excellent menu options and nice atmosphere

By TDPGH |

My boyfriend lives in Ocean Beach, and he wanted to have dinner here one night. I am so glad that we did! This was one of the best meals I have had in San Diego. The menu has so many different options, and the service was fabulous. We took several doggie bags home because we ordered about 8 things to try and couldn't finish everything! I can't wait to eat there again. It is very easy to walk by this place and not know how wonderful it is. Definitely try it!

Tapas-Sushi-Great beers- what more do you need

By sccrref |

Our son and his gf, who live in OB said we had to try this place since we were going to nearby concert. Only regret is we had to leave just as place was starting to rock n roll. This place may not be for purists- the tapas werent typical spanish tapas though they had some eg they had a burger and mac n cheese and we got a mushroom/white corn polenta plater. huge portion. Same w/ sushi. No sashimi and only 2-3 nigiri options and their rolls were mostly their own creation but were they good. we got stuffed. great choice of micro brews. Place had a great vibe. Would like to see what its like later in the eve. If get to OB gotta try it

Lunch Specials

By cb8189 |

When I ate here, it was for a late lunch while working in the area. They had some delicious looking lunch specials but everything was a bit more expensive than I would have liked. All in all the food was good and creative but my ideal price point for lunch is closer to $10, not $15.

Fresh sushi and nigiri outdoors!!!

By Hbf4 |

Enjoyed the spicy Kahuna of Tuna and the zesty lemon basil salmon rolls and king salmon nigiri. Ate outside for some good people watching during the street market. Great beer selection too.

Go-To OB Eatery

By World Traveler Reviews |

We've been here a few times and have enjoyed it every time. They carry some really good microbrews - something for everyone. And their sushi rolls are quite nice. We shared the halibut with white beans and spinach on our last visit, Valentines Day. The fish was overcooked but they took care of it with a smile. The second time was a charm! We figured that cooks get a bit overwhelmed on Valentines Day. Even on the most stressful day of the year for restaurant staff, the Joint's servers and managers were awesomely accommodating. We'll be back. For more reviews of fun places to visit around the world, check out my blog World Traveler Reviews dot com

Great place for sushi and wine

By TikiTravels |

The sushi was fresh and well prepared here. I went here solo and was impressed with the quality. The joint has a pretty decent wine list with lots of choices. A good Saki offering. There are many other menu options if you are not a sushi fan. I will be back!

Great food and service!

By Reese |

Wonderful place, great service, and awesome food. We are really impressed with the staff. We bought dog treats and accidentally left them there and they saved them for us! Thank you!

Good good and drink, good people watching location

By TJ Hill |

The Joint never fails to please, be it food, drink or service. Yesterday, we caught it during the OB Farmers Market, which happens on Wednesday afternoons on Newport between Cable and Bacon Streets. From The Joint's window seats, one can people watch. In Ocean Beach, that's a good sport. So go to The Joint for fresh, tasty sushi, a gray cold beverage and some good entertainment!

Sushi heaven

By V2427GPjohnw |

Good stuff on everything I ordered. The king salmon was especially good, seshimi style. Besides that though, the aoili fries are very good and the sake is good, but I drink filtered only.

Sushi & hot sake

By jrkorzen |

My husband and I came here for dinner after watching the sunset at Ocean Beach and sat at the bar. The hot sake was very good, and we really liked all 3 of our sushi rolls. The size of the rolls were generous with 10 pieces each and combinations are creative. "The Joint" roll was our favorite.

Back Three Times

By SheddyCapeCodMA |

Stumbled upon The Joint as we cruised Newport Ave in OB and were delightfully thrilled with the friendly service, casual atmosphere and delicious food. The Joint Roll w/ soft shell crab was yummy, the Catalonia Mussels de-vine, Spicy Salmon/Tuna scrumptious, a fresh and lovely, perfectly dressed Arugula Salad, Rasta Roll, OG Mango Madness, Filly Mig Skewers, Salmon Cakes, Goat Cheese Polenta....3 times....we went back....for more... Thanks to CJ and Joe for welcoming us from Cape Cod...!

Great Vegetarian Sushi Options!

By Heidi C |

The Joint has converted me into a Sushi Lover! I typically have to avoid sushi as there are not many veggie options, - all of this has changed thanks to The Joint. The place is always pretty full, its a nice set up with seats at the bar area, as well as table seating. The staff are great, super friendly, always happy to give recommendations. We ordered one dish that was really too spicy and they changed it straight away no questions asked. They offer a whole selection of delicious Asian options, and mix the whole experience up with great Spanish tapas. The garlic spinach and the vegetarian tortilla are really good. Its great value. The one small downside is that its pretty loud, if you are looking for a romantic dinner its not the best place, but for anything else its great. They also play excellent music, which adds to the general good feeling you have when you hang out there.

show service, expensive beer and food

By Joel B |

The title says it all. I have friends that like this place but I did not have a good experience. I may try them again, but they have a LOT of competition in Ocean Beach.

Sushi and Tapas? YES!

By ShadySpot |

Yes, sushi and tapas and it was DELICIOUS! Because I don't like sushi normally-raw fish just no, but I had a sushi roll called the joint with deep fried soft shell crab, chopped with avocado, green onions, pickled shallots, masago, sesame seeds, house spicy sauce, rolled in soy paper. And it was so good, I could have easily had another. I also had the miso, which was good and a locally sourced lemon-lime soda. Nice restaurant on the corner with a small outside patio. Close to the beach too.

If I lived here, I’d live here

By lewseph |

Everything is fabulous. Had special prime rib sandwich- total decadent goodness. Wonderful Joint Salad. Great Bento Box. Great beer selection. Service was impeccable (🥰snort-laugh waitress from Ohio).

One of the best places I ate in San Diego

By Travisnin |

We walked by this place with no idea how amazing it is. Normally I read reviews and plan things out better but did not have time. I was blown away by the service and the food. Th beer on tap featured a lot of local breweries which I like. You must try the special titled "the joint" it was amazing.

Meh:-/

By ruthissleeping |

I never really want to come back here, not because we had a bad experience, it was just underwhelming. The food was pricey and completely unmemorable. When I want sushi I go elsewhere.

This Place Has It All

By chigirl |

I really enjoyed my visit to The Joint last week. This was my first visit and I was blown away by all the food and drink choices. We asked for the blackened salmon tacos. Even though we were too early for lunch our server asked the cook if he could accommodate us and he did. We enjoyed a local beer and they gave us some recommendations for beers and tapas in the neighborhood. Can't wait to return to try their sushi.

Eclectic menu and great service!

By KNTraveler |

We ate dinner here on out first night in San Diego. They had a big beer selection and the menu was a mix of tapas, main dishes, and sushi. We had salmon tacos, shrimp and grits, and truffle fries. Everything had a nice flavor and the portion sizes were perfect. Also, the service stood out. From the hostess, to the waitress to the bussing staff, everyone was very nice and attentive. I would definitely recommend and we would return if we come to San Diego again.

Great night out

By AdventuresofGemma |

One of the best meals I had whilst visiting San Diego. Good value, great Sushi! Would come again next time.

Happening Spot in Ocean Beach

By StarLady99 |

The Joint is super popular yet the wait was only about 30 minutes, just enough time to walk across the street to sample the craft brewery beers. The menu at The Joint boasts names reminiscent of the 1960-70’s. The food is Asian inspired and everything we tried was fantastic. The sushi offers interesting combinations. Atmosphere is fun and light. Definitely a great place to eat when you are in Ocean Beach.

One of our fave meals in San Diego

By DreamingHiltz |

My husband and I spent the day in OB and stopped here for happy hour. We couldn't decide what we wanted to eat, so we had a little of everything including truffle fries, salmon tacos, and sushi rolls. Very random combination but everything was surprisingly delicious- fresh and flavorful. Service was friendly and fast. We enjoyed sitting outside and it turned out to be one of our favorite places during our month long stay in the San Diego area.

Eclectic menu and friendly service

By Gitanjali S |

Great place for an extensive sushi, sashimi & tapas menu, plus an impressive list of beers on tap.very friendly and quick service but quite pricey, so don’t be fooled by the laid-back vibe. Excellent vegetarian and vegan options.

Laid-back atmosphere

We stumbled on this place while exploring Ocean-Beach. What a little gem! The food was outstanding, especially the crispy salmon. The staff was friendly and professional, making us feel very welcome.

Late night dinner

By Frank S |

I spent the day in LA, walking around. After all the traffic back we wanted something to eat. We found a few spots to park out front. They have tapas and sushi.the tapas tastes great. Crispy chicken mashed potatoes is a must try. Mussels were good to. All around we had a great dinner and some great Sake.

Great sushi and service

By eabarrdvm |

We had a great dinner here last night. The Mary Jane roll was my favorite. I also liked the Joint roll I ordered. The spicy tuna roll was not as spicy as I like. The service was terrific.

Busy Place With Good Food

By Jenniferigor |

Came here on a week night-didn't know there was some sort of street fair happening in the middle of town, so it was hard to park. We were visiting from out of town and had seen good reviews online. The food did not disappoint. I had the steak frites and loved it! The fries are hand cut and the meat was good. My husband really enjoyed his sushi and my 7 year old son had the bacon mac and cheese, which was super yummy. The atmosphere was definitely like a bar, so I wouldn't recommend it as a family restaurant, although kids are welcome there. It was really loud and they cram you in there, but we met some nice people at the table next to us. Service was good.

The sushi had wonderful flavor and texture. They were moderately busy but we had wonderful service and I appreciated the real crab vs imitation so many places use. We went on a wed night and were able to enjoy the farmers market that goes on outside as well. My boyfriend who thought he did not like sushi, even liked it! Would definitely go back if I was in the area.

This place is really nice, there is great music in the background, the sushi is quite unique and the win is good. If you have the crave for some good sushi I'll think you would enjoy it!

I noticed The Joint on my first day in Ocean Beach. The menu in the window said Sushi and Tapas Bar. Not a usual combination! Added to this were numerous awards for Best Sushi, Best Tapas, Best Drinks and some more, all won multiple times. By day 4 I convinced my Mother in law (who does not like sushi) and husband to try it out. Well, what an experience! The atmosphere is casual and unpretentious. The waitress was exceptional in a casual but highly efficient manner. We were never rushed, our bill not brought to the table while we were still eating! The sushi was unlike anything i have ever seen. A fabulous mix of traditional and fusion. Fresh micro greens, ponzu sauce for a delicate flavour boost, peanuts for crunch and a delectable selection of cooked, raw and vegetarian. I left even more of a Sushi lover than before. My Mother in law asked: 'When can we come back'? (We did not try any of the Tapas but from what i saw around me, it's a hit also)

Best brunch spot ever

This place is known as a sushi spot. But on weekends it doubles as a terrific brunch spot. In the middle of Ocean Beach, you cannot go wrong.

If you like variety, hit The Joint. Sushi was amazing. The goat cheese stuffed dates were so good we had to order two portions.

My Farewell dinner with family before heading home to Australia. Loved the vibe, food, drinks and service. Definitely going back when there next.

Creative, Delicious, Local

Nice intimate local sushi place with fantastic happy hour pricing, microbrew, nice wine selection, and great service. My husband loves the crispy tempura shrimp roll. My favorite is the beet salad.

food was fabulous and the workers very nice

This is a really nice place to grab a quick bite. Very seedy neighborhood with homeless people everywhere, smells like pee outside and it is across the street from a "Male Enhancement" clinic. Which seemed to attracted the homeless guys for whatever reason. They have veggie rolls sushi and fabulous burgers. The waiter and the employees there were very nice. I would go back, even if the homeless people are creepy and beg for money.

Great service, great menu, perfect for sharing

Such a great place to munch and drink. They've got a good selection of craft beers, many of which are locally brewed. They've also good a menu filled with tapas and sushi, which makes it great for sharing. My husband raved about his sushi and we both loved our seaweed salads. The service is excellent as well. The ambience is appropriately laid-back for OB, though a little fancier decor-wise than you may expect compared to other shops/restaurants on Newport. A must-try. Skip the line for Hodad's and have a cold pint at The Joint instead. Even their fries are better :)

Best Food in Ocean Beach

By Roger S |

Simply some of the BEST food to be had in Ocean Beach. I love the sushi bar with Chef Todd leading his team of highly talented Sushi Chefs. Best thing about the Joint is it has a menu delivering awesome Sushi with a hot menu that delivers also. Executive Chef Michael leads the way with palate pleasing specials you have to try. You get what you pay for here. It is high quality food made by trained culinarians. Servers are cool and share the passion of good food and drink "OB" style. Take a chance on this place. It won't disappoint.
