A Clone of the "Island"

By OmniEpicurean |

Science has made major advances in the cloning of human cells. Similarly, the restaurant business long ago figured out how to clone restaurants which are called franchises. I believe that I have found a clone, however, that is not part of a franchise and will elaborate. First of all let me say that the whomever selected the color palette for the restaurant design was not afraid of it, color that is. The glaring blue boxy building with a large lighthouse painted on the exterior at the corner of Fred. and Huisache slaps the eye into focus like a wet fish hitting one in the face. The interior is of similar color boldness, but with a lime sherbet green made electric under fluorescent lamps that leaves one feeling a little fuzzy and maybe a wee bit seasick. A spartan interior with sparse wall decoration and a concrete floor adds to a galley feel and make it known in no uncertain terms that you are here for one purpose, to eat seafood. The fried fish and shrimp offerings more than vaguely parallel a well known family owned operation that contains "island" in the name. I ordered the lunch special "B" which the menu here lists as #1. The light breading on the mild white fish and the fresh gulf shrimp were wholly familiar to me as I enjoyed crispy bite after crispy bite followed by intermittent swigs from a tall bottle of Mexican Coke. The cole slaw came in a larger serving and was similar, but crispy and fresh versus the island's sometimes mushy and insipid little plastic cup full, the fries were done to the point of a slight brown on the outside with the inside still sporting hot, soft potato, and the hush puppies were good, but needed the flavor boost of a little onion. Dipping my shrimp into the balanced, smooth and creamy tartar sauce with my eyes closed, I could easily have been sitting inside the other place with island in the name and that's saying something both for the fried seafood and the tartar sauce. I would even go so far as to say that if the cook did not spend some time chefing for this island restaurant, then tilapia is the tastiest fish you will ever put in your mouth. Not!!! I did notice on the menu that the restaurant would fry up one of these nasty bait fish whole for your dining pleasure, but I will try not to hold that transgression against them. Prices seems to be relatively comparable, but the menu is not quite as large with as much variety as the island place. They do have one item that is not shared between the two restaurants being compared, however, and that's shrimp tacos; 2 for $6.95 with cole slaw! I have got to get me some of these next time.

Great place to eat

Nice place to eat and very easy to get to. It's right off the interstate. Very tasty food and prices are very responsible. If the day was cool they have tables outside to eat on.

Fresh seafood, well prepared, at reasonable prices

By bbbb7777 |

Our business is within walking distance, so we eat here weekly for fresh, delicious, well-prepared seafood at very reasonable prices. The gumbo is always hot and flavorful, with plenty of shrimp. The shrimp cocktail is sweet and delicious and as good as we've had in upscale restaurants. Love their cole slaw: cabbage is always fresh and crunchy, and the sweet/tart dressing strikes just the right balance. The cajun fried catfish is also a favorite, with its spicy cornmeal breading; and it's never greasy or oily tasting. Wonderful place, good people.

Best Fried Fish in San Antonio!

By John E |

Don’t be put off by the appearance when you walk in. It has a rustic charm and a 97% sanitation rating! If you like fried seafood platters - this is the place to go in San Antonio. I had the #2 combo with shrimp and whitefish filets. Ample servings include choice of two sides. The breading is perfect, a blend of light seasoning with a touch of heat. We’ll eat here again!

Local Place with Good Atmosphere

By Jay N |

I am new to San Antonio and wanted to get some food with an old friend who dropped into town. By chance alone I settled for this place. I have never been there, been to this part of town, or had even heard of this place before this visit. Order at a window in the kitchen and pickup at another window. No wait staff. We had grilled fish and shrimp. Lemon pepper for the fish and garlic for the shrimp. We had a medium to small baked potato and green beans. We choose hush puppies over corn muffin or rolls. Truly a locals kind of place. The food was prepared for us and hot. The cost was resemble and not a budget buster like so many seafood places. The portions were enough but I’d have liked more beans. Drinks were self serve water or soft drinks in cans. The restaurant was clean and the staff polite and friendly. If in that part of town I surely would return.

Seafood like it should be

I have driven by this little restaurant many times but always in a rush. Today, 6/15/19, I decided to stop by and try it out. My wife and I loved it. It is a simple place that is very well kept and maintained. The food was absolutely fabulous. It beats Sea Island by a lot, and not only for its prices, but its food. It is delicious. I will recommend and bring friends. But I won't tell too many because then it will get too crowded. (-: Go try it,,,, really, but don't tell anyone.

Was told about The Lighthouse Seafood by a friend and she and I decided to try it out, The Restaurant is small but clean and the staff was nice and helpful on showing us seafood selections. We both ordered the fish and shrimp plate which came with fries, cole slaw and three hush puppies , the cost was 8.99 they had a larger fish and shrimp plate at 12.99.. everything we saw coming out of the kitchen looked good! This is a neighborhood restaurant, nothing fancy but oh so tasty !! Give it a try!!!

Seafood with excellent taste and affordable prices

By Beatrice P |

My cousin invited me to go eat dinner with her at Light House Sea food restaurant. I'm very picky when it comes to eating Seafood at a restaurant. The people who work there were very friendly and the place was very clean. The prices for seafood was very affordable and you get a good amount of food. I LOVED the fish and shrimp and coleslaw. The trarter sauce was delicious. I definitely will be going back.
