enjoyable kosher treat

By frugalfinance |

The service was impeccable and friendly , the portions were extremely generous and the food was just delicious ! The decor has a lot of movie posters, especially featuring the works of Steven Speilberg , which is understandable as the restaurant is owned by his mother. I stop in every time I am in LA

Charming little place...

Cosy little restaurant with good simple food and a charming host. Try the salmon puffs for something different...

Try out The Milky Way in LA

Well an online find That looked like a must do ... Had good reviews & now know why !! The place is small & quaint ( we were there mid afternoon but probably needs reservations for evenings) it’s filled with Family photos & old videos of which you can find of the obviously vibrant owner displayed in a little alcove you can watch from most tables as well !Mmmmm good ! The authentic latke w spiced apples & Sour cream were delicious. And out hot & super crispy ! The Fish & chips came hot and crispy ! 3 nice pieces of perfectly cooked chunky white flakey fish with some of the best fries I’ve had in long time! Super crispy mmmm good!!!!! I highly recommend this great little find ...... you won’t be disappointed ! Oh and that awesome lady in the video that wears the best outfits in those photos & looks like quite the character turns out to be Steven Spielberg’s mom!! Kudos to mom !

Great Dairy food in a Quaint Setting

By Needlepointaddict |

Love going to this local restaurant. The food is always good and the service is fast and caring. It is a treat to be there when the petite owner herself is there, Mrs. Spielberg. She is so warm and caring and wonderful. Love the blintzes and the lasagna. Take your time and enjoy the slow pace of the restaurant.

Always a wonderful experience

I used to eat regularly in this restaurant twenty years ago when I lived in the area. At that time Mrs. Adler (Steven Spielberg's mom) was always there to meet and greet. Although she is gone, nothing has changed. The menu is the same -- the tuna melt, the pistachio, pasta, the blackened snapper. Even the denim tablecloths with the ruffles. All wonderful. Great service and great quality. I highly recommend it.

Worst service I have ever encountered anywhere

By sja106 |

We were staying in LA to see my sister and her family. We visited Milky Way for brunch on our last day, Sunday. When we arrived, we were the only guests. The waiter informed us, quite aggressively, that our small children must not run around. They did not leave their seats. Just their existence seemed to upset the waiter so much that he practically threw our food at us. The food all came at different times, and the croutons for my sister's Caeser salad never arrived, despite assurances that they were on their way. When one of the children spilt some cold water on the table cloth, the waiter asked me "do you think this is funny?" After this display of shocking service and mediocre food, they added 20% to the bill for service. Avoid Milky Way at all costs.

Our favorite dairy restaurant

By Ruth1836 |

We had cream of broccoli soup. Eggplant Parmesan served with fresh steamed veggies and garlic bread, spinach crepes, and pistachio pasta. Everything was delicious. Our waitress and waiter were very pleasant and attentive. Mrs Adler took the night off,so we didn't have the pleasure of being greeted by her she be well and continue to be a charming hostess

Great place

By jack g |

After not visiting this place for years, the prices seemed very reasonable. The food was good quality but the seasoning a little off. The atmosphere and service are great. Even though I wasn't crazy about the food but would go back, it was nice. What we had: Lasagna: served with steamed vegetables on the side. Could not decide what spice there was extra there but there was one and the taste really bothered me. We did not finish this dish. Spinach crepes: also served with steamed veggies. A little over filled and lacked some spices. Some melted cheese but no cream sauce or anything. Good taste overall. Potato pancake: A couple were kind of burned and the dish is very oily... Dessert: cheesecake tasted nice.

A Big Fav Of Mine - And Your's Too

By Shoshana H |

This is such a cosy place, carpeted, tablecloths, alcove seats, some nice piano music in the background - most likely by the owner in her younger days. Service is so pleasant and personal. The main servers have been there for years and really know they're clientele - a very nice feeling. A nice place for lunch, dinner, anniversary, a party of people. Food is great. A dairy restaurant, with fish, a variety of vegetarian dishes, soups, fish and chips, great salads etc etc. I love their cheese cake!! Also serves wine. Cannot go wrong here. Parking perhaps outside if you're lucky if not down a side street.

The Best!!!

What a great place - it is always a delight to meet Mrs. Adler!!! Even when she is not there, the food is always wonderful, and the cheese blintzes are the best anywhere in the World. Very warm, inviting and casual atmosphere. Looking forward to returning very soon!

Adorable

I honestly felt like I could have been in Ms. Adler's living room when I walked in, and she is a real sweetheart. True comfort food - and all of it is delicious! I can't wait to visit LA again so I can come back here.

An amazing find in busy Los Angeles

By Steven B |

While many are impressed with the fact that the owner is the mother of Steven Spielbeg, Lea Adler is a wonderful hostess who makes all feel comfortable. The restaurant is kosher vegetarian, but has fish on the menu. It has the best blinces around and the staff makes you feel at home. I have been there with friends, as a couple and on business. It is always a quiet restful place with wonderful food at amazing prices. I love the place and recommend it especially to tourists who will love the place.

Clean, kosher, good service

By Jeff K |

The restaurant could not be cleaner. It's decoration looks like it's a time warp to the fifties. Deep red vinyl tufted seats. The staff was very helpful and attentive. The cream of broccoli soup was delicious. The cheese cake was yummy. The egg plant parmesan was hot but tasteless. The house salad was chopped romaine with sliced tomatoes. Pretty unremarkable.

Delicious and certified kosher!

By MooshLA |

Love this place - the food is delicious, the service is A+ and the setting is special. The blintzes are delish as is the fish chowder. It has a rich history with special owners and I'm so glad to see that it's continuing to run - and was quite busy when I was there for lunch.

Overall Pleasant Dining Experience"

By Tandi101 |

The hostess is the mostest, very gracious and humble. The food is satisfying and healthy, and the prices are very reasonable. The spinach salad for less than $8.00 was delicious. You can have salads, pasta, fish, and even yummy blintzes. Some days you can order fish chowder that will have you coming back for more. Check out the posters on the way to the rest rooms, very entertaining.

Always a pleasure to be in Mrs. Spielberg's restaurant

By denals |

This kosher place has nice atmosphere, good food and does great PR for her son's films. It doesn't have that zero-atmosphere feel of many American kosher places even though it is relatively inexpensive.

Restaurante não recomendável

By neusacavalcante |

Definitely I do not recommend The Milk Way to anyone. Recently I was with the family of my son now resident in Los Angeles. Despite being kosher, the food has nothing to do with Jewish cooking. The service is horrible as well. In addition, there was an embarrassing scene: a Jewish family consisting of an elderly couple, a young couple and a little baby, no more than six months old, was warned and even invited to stay outside because the child began to cry . The crying did not bother the few customers there. What struck us was the rough way the family was treated. Aside from the prices on the site being different from those shown on the menu, our bill came with a mandatory 20% tip, when in all LA restaurants we went there is always the option for 10, 15 or 20% of the consumption. When I left, I complained about food and service and received the following response: "Then do not come back!" Then I said, "I would not go back here, even if it was the only restaurant in town." All this is very unfortunate because besides having spoiled our Sunday, the event is against the Jews and the Jewish food, which, by the way, is quite tasty and sophisticated.

Great food, cute decor, warm atmosphere!

By funluvintraveler |

My friends and I went for a quick lunch and all our food was absolutely delicious. The restaurant is kosher and it's a dairy restaurant, so no meat...but there are so many original items on the menu. We heard how awesome it is to see the owner, who happens to be Steven Spielberg's mom, but she unfortunately wasn't there when we went. Bon apetit!

Come on Friday for the fish chowder

By ALAN F |

I love Fridays here. The fish chowder is out of this world and worth a drive. The chips with guacamole is yummy. Cajun Snapper, chimichangas, everything is always fresh & tasty.

A Friday Favorite

By ALAN F |

I have business lunches at the Milky Way usually on Fridays. Their menu selections have not changed in years nor has the furniture! If you like blintzes, latkes and the best kosher fish chowder in town, you will love the Milky Way.

Average Food with Horrid Service

By Calistoga Grower |

Had to entertain a friend who keeps kosher so we wound up at the Milky Way. One of the most mediocre experiences in this universe. Food was OK, overpriced for the quality but edible. But the service was simply terrible. No water, even after 3 requests. I had soup minus a soup spoon. By the time I received the requested spoon the soup was cold and left mostly uneaten.

Charming Restaurant

By Susan G |

The restaurant is famous as being owned by Steven Spielberg's mother. It is her baby. The food is delicious, reasonably priced, and kosher. Order an item not on the menu - Pistachio Pasta. This is to die for. Team it up with the spinach salad. You can also have great homemade cheesecake for dessert if you have room.

Face lift for the Milky Way

By Pathfinder608387 |

After the passing of Lee Adler who personally ran the dairy Kosher restaurant for many years, her son Steven Spielberg, refurbished & reopened it. Denim fabric now cover the seats, Lee's favourite fabric. Family photos of her life surround you. A video clip of her energy and pure joy for life greet you at the entrance, creating a special atmosphere. The staff is warm & friendly providing good service. Everything we ordered was very tasty. Yummy cheese cake. Her personal presence will be missed.

Excellent kosher restaurant

By rskatz |

I have dined at this wonderful kosher restaurant with my 96-year-old mom twice in the last few months. On both occasions the staff was extremely accomodating to my mom's needs, and very attentive. The food was well prepared although a bit pricey, even for a kosher restaurant. The decor and atmosphere were pleasant, and I enjoyed the posters of Spielberg films as well as his family photos on display. My mom and I look forward to eating at The Milky Way again the next time I am visiting her in LA.

Goodfood, not enough on menu.

By anonymous14253 |

This restaurant when you walk in is cool. Stephen Spielbergs mom runs the restaurant and goes over to tables and is social. The food is OK, not great for kids, and not enough variety. But overall, its an ok restaurant.

Like home.

By Carol B |

I love the Milky Way! It's a bit of a drive for us, but if it were not, I would eat there all the time. My last visit was to celebrate my birthday. I usually avoid my birthday being acknowledged at any restaurant, but I was all smiles when Mrs. Adler came over, with a magnificent dessert, singing "Happy Birthday" to me. With a smile that lit up the room, Mrs. Adler said that I made her happy; by coming to her restaurant. I enthusiastically told her that she makes me happy! I love the Milky Way! My brother introduced me to the Milky Way 25 or so years ago. Now, I am thrilled to be able to share my delight in the food, wonderful staff and overall ambiance with my family. We will be celebrating Mother's Day there very soon; not on "Mother's Day". We will greatly miss Mrs. Adler, but I have no doubt that the Milky Way staff will continue to offer the wonderful experience that Mrs. Adler established.

Very good food

Nice outdoor dining. service a little on the slow side. but the food is well worth the wait. good location

Loved It....

By TravelingDavid613 |

Was looking forward to a dairy dinner and was not disappointed. Service was excellent - waiter was so much fun and full of ideas of places and things for us to go see in the area. We had a spinach and artichoke dip to start which was so good. Highly recommend. Also had Fettuccini with mushrooms and added Salmon - my daughter and I shared and it was plenty - not heavy at all. Definitely make this a stop on your visit to the area.

LOVED HAVING DINNER AT MILKY WAY !!

By Michael M |

Nostalgic and delicious and otherwise perfect. We totally enjoyed our dinner here and they didn't rush us past 9pm, even while they were starting to close up. I can't wait to go back, sooner than later.

Excellent breakfast. Friendly service.

By joaniemaria |

We stopped for breakfast because of Steven Spielberg’s mother! It is a wonderful cafe/deli. I had a fruit cup and coffee, others had eggs Benedict, and French toast. All excellent and reasonably priced! Live piano music on Sunday morning. Look at the Spielberg movie posters on the way to the restrooms. Very nice! Lots of family photos framed on shelves around the cafe. Friendly service. We will return! I recommend.

Catskills in the 1960's

Food was okay and inexpensive, but restaurant feels tired and outdated. We didn't mind that restaurant is all dairy, no meat.

Wonderful food and amazing hostess

By Malar M |

We had excellent food and service but the cheery on the cake was to meet Steven Spielberg's mum. She was so kind and sweet and spoke with such charm and good humor. It was a real pleasure for us to meet her. When told that my daughter was going to study at USCs famous school of Cinematic Arts, she told her with a face like that you should be in Movies!! Do go to this charming restaurant is you are in LA!!

Disappointed

By Jan C |

Went with family who are kosher. Staff had no warmth or personality or communication. Food very average. Bathrooms needed a good scrub. Not returning.

A legendary hostess

Walking down pico we came across this place and dropped in for lunch . The hostess Leah at 94 was the stand out of this place . Food cheap but nothing special

Good Food, pleavery good!sant decor, good service!

Met a friend for lunch. I am on a very strict diet, but found a dish that was to my liking - stuffed cabbage with potato pancakes. Delish! My friend had the blintzes -

You never know who'll walk in.

By Abraham W |

Excellent salad and blintzes ( to die for) . The service was highly professional and quick. Decor was soft and beautiful. This restaurant is strictly kosher. On the day we were there, movie director Steven Spielberg came to lunch. Well, it is his mom's restaurant, after all.
