We've been meaning to stop by this place for a long time but never seem to be able to find a place to park. It's one of the disadvantages of this part of town for sure! One afternoon around 2 we were actually hoping to hit the new spot down Westheimer - Hay Merchant. But they don't open til 3 and I didn't want to hang out an hour as hungry as I was and wait for them to open. So we popped into Firkin & Phoenix because the parking lot had spots (Yeah!) The young woman who waited on us was so personable. She knew the menu well and was very attentive even though we were the only folks sitting at a table to eat. Everyone else was at the bar having a pint. The beer list is your basic pub beer list. Guinness and Harp and Newcastle and the usual. They did have some bottled beer I'd never heard of before and some local Texas/Houston beers. I had the The Guinness mushroom steak pie and it was pretty good. The pastry was so light and flaky I kinda wish I had some butter and jam for it. The potatoes that came with it were tasty and the "seasonal veggies" weren't over cooked and still had taste. But it wasn't anything "special". The Firkin nachos were good as well. Nothing extrodinary...just nachos. And I think it was Pace picante they used. But there were PLENTY for two and had lots of good stuff on them - black olives, sour cream, guac. We'll go back and try more items on the menu. It's always good to find a nice pub with decent food. Ok, it's the food is not as good as the Black Lab on Montrose but it's way better than the Red Lion on Shepherd (and cheaper and the waitstaff is nicer too). There was a pool table and dart boards and soccer on TV. We just wanted to eat and didn't stay to play but I do like darts and it would be a nice place to play.

Beautiful pub! We tried the classic Scotch Eggs, very unusual and yummy. I had the chicken pot pie, best ever!! My husband had the Mac and cheese and loved it. The beer was ice cold and the TV's were huge! After the game the TV's rolled up. Pretty cool.
Large assortment of draft on tap---YEAH!
It feels like a chain but who cares when there is a large number of draft beer to choose from and the food is consistantly good-- it's a pub--lots of neighbors walk here--everyone is smiling and it's always busy.
