Gorgeous Setting and Pop-overs

By nylabuyer |

You’ll feel like you are in Europe and celebrating a special occasion. The view and the vibe are what is most impressive, this place is all about the ambiance. The pop-overs are exceptional, unfortunately the rest of the menu is pricey for what it is and lacks the commensurate quality and taste. I would come back for something more like high tea rather than a meal.

Perfect!

This was incredibly tasty and cozy. We did the afternoon the. Nice to sit, perfect service. Pricey but this was really worth it!

Beautiful room, lovely for lunch with friends

By Gail S |

We had reservations for four, lunch with friends from Monterey. We were seated on time at a lovely table. The notable NM popovers arrived at once, worth the trip just for them. Excellent service by the back waiter. Our table server took our order, the drinks and food arrived in a timely manner. My husbands burger was very over cooked, missing condiments, which upon request he received half way through his meal. I ordered the grilled peach and burrata with argugula. The burrata was generous, the arugula was stringy, and the salad overall lacked the flavor punch. The other couple seemed okay with their lunch. I have dined at the restaurant many times over the years, so maybe it was an off day. The server did not make any tip points, she kept reaching across my plate, she was alright but not good with timing or follow through. The prices are high, but not unexpected. Yes, we will all dine here again.

Gorgeous spot for photos

By readytogoJapan |

I brought a young lady here fir her 25th Birthday. We knew it was on the expensive side..but wanted a place where we’d get a memorable photo. I asked for a good seat fir photos and they put us by the window which put her right in front of the beautiful ceiling and in just the right place for a lovely photo. We asked another server to take our photo, which he did (and was very accommodating.) We had a lady server (no name tags) and she was nice. We enjoyed the scones and the sandwiches..which were pretty good. I wasn’t expecting too much after reading reviews..but we were mostly pleased. We brought home the cakes (top tier of the three-tier afternoon tea set). As it was a birthday visit..the young lady also got a cupcake with candle which was nice. Cost wise..two afternoon tea sets (not with any additional drink) was 2 x $50. Plus tax and tip..about $130 (July 2019). Hardly reasonable..but the setting is lovely and for someone who wants to have lovely photos to keep..it was what we wanted. My birthday girl was pleased. Nice for a mother/daughter occasion. And it was enough food for me. Everything is small..but added together..it was enough. Despite the controversy surrounding the Rotunda in the modern building, I am still glad they saved some of the old City of Paris. It may not be as it once was, but I felt a little of the old time feeling there..while drinking my tea.

Beautiful room, pricey restaurant

By Suzanne D |

The Rotunda is a beautiful room with the stained glass ceiling from the old City of Paris department store, before it became a Neiman Marcus. Service was excellent. The complimentary popovers with strawberry jam and petite cup of chicken boullion are lovely extras. This restaurant is very pricey ($28 for a turkey burger, $50pp for high tea exclusive of champagne), but I do enjoy it for lunch when shopping. I would also consider hosting a birthday lunch or special occasion tea or lunch here.

Fell way short of expectation

Atmosphere- 5 Service - 4 Food - 3/4 Reception/Check-in - 1 First time being treated by your daughter for a special occlusion is always special, wish Rotunda would make it feel that way but really fell short!!! We tried to check in for our 1:15PM reservation at the front desk, and remained waiting and being ignored all the way. Had to try hard to catch someone's attention at the desk to check in. We remained waiting for over 20 minutes when there were available tables and had asked for window seating (there were plenty available at the time of check-in). When we were seated, we were told all the window tables were taken by then. Our server was prompt, cordial and the only one in the restaurant that made us feel welcome!!! The food was good, but not amazing. The best was the warm popover served at the beginning of the meal. When we were leaving, we passed by the front reception desk again and unlike any restaurant, there was no words of appreciation for dining or wishing us well. Completely ignored!!! Not sure why anyone would return with such cold reception.

Beautiful dining experience under the Rotunda

By myorona73 |

I was headed to the city and wanted to have an afternoon tea and knew the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus was the place I wanted to go! Afternoon Tea at The Rotunda is Sunday – Thursday 2pm to 4pm and Friday & Saturday 2pm to 5pm and making a reservation at the Rotunda was easy through Open Table. I went with the Signature Tea. They offer a selection of loose teas, green, white or black. And tea service starts with a warm cup of chicken consommé and a parmesan puff that's amazing. Then you are served some warm popovers, and omg yum! Odd shaped, hard on the outside, fluffy on the inside and topped with the whipped butter, perfection! I was in bread heaven, and they are unlimited, WHAT? That’s crazy. The Signature Tea also comes with a cucumber sandwich, salmon on pumpernickel, crab salad cone, chicken salad sandwich, every finger sandwich was good, but my favorite was the crab cone. For the sweets, there was a berry filled cannoli, chocolate mousse with raspberry, salted caramel cookie dipped in white chocolate and a blueberry muffin. That salted caramel was soo good! You also are severed savory and sweet scones with Devonshire cream, lemon curd, and strawberry jam, and well anything in Devonshire cream is pretty amazing to me. I really enjoyed the Signature Tea, it’s a beautiful dining experience under the Rotunda. Go see for yourself!

Great place for a shopping break

Always enjoy the ambience at this place and I usually try and sit at the bar!!! Had great service yesterday from barman Shaun - perfect Kir Royale followed by a great Chardonnay accompanied with Lobster rolls and fries!!! Thanks and see you soon!!!

Not Just for Ladies Who Lunch!

By Nan Q |

Although the Rotunda Restaurant, which is open from lunchtime until 5PM daily, is often largely populated by Ladies who are recovering from doing some industrial-strength shopping, for San Franciscans in the know, this spectacular space ( which occupies what was originally the City of Paris rotunda, and is now part of the Neiman Marcus store in Union Square ) offers an extraordinary experience, to anyone who loves to dine well, amid architectural elegance. Allow me to describe my recent lunch at the Rotunda. Immediately upon being seated, all diners are presented with a small cup of excellent consomme, along with a hot popover, which is accompanied by a dollop of strawberry butter. For my meal I chose: Pan-seared salmon with a peppercorn crust, garnished with micro-greens and a few roasted baby carrots, served on a swirl of pureed carrots which were spiced with cardamom, and with a small side of kale sauteed in garlic butter. Calories for my entree: a mere 570 (the Menu helpfully lists calorie counts for the mains....but NOT for the desserts---thank Goodness!). And for my dessert (calorie count unknown): Panna cotta flavored with lime juice, garnished with yellow caviar, toasted coconut; and served on a pool of delicate butterscotch sauce. Bliss. Reservations at peak-lunchtime hours are recommended, but, for later-afternoon feasting, just breeze right in; you'll be seated promptly.

Good food and atmosphere for conversation; pricey!

By Ladysons |

We had a group of four enjoying brunch – it was a relaxed and somewhat quiet atmosphere. Likely because of the weather, the restaurant was pretty empty. The table was split on desserts, but we agreed the main courses were delicious especially the duck and chicken tacos. Their brunch is very limited; but overall the food was great. Service was good, albeit slow considering the number of patrons.

Shopping lunch

By bcheong |

Nice respite from shopping at neiman or anywhere in union square. Always crowded, though not as bad as cheesecake factory This place is posh - they give you "complementary" soup and bread Ordered the prime rib dip, which took ages to arrive. The next table which arrived later already finished their food before mine arrived. Not cool. It was pretty good though

Not a big deal.

By Simona P |

We went for afternoon tea. The staff is not adequate for the cost that is proposed, good food but nothing extraordinary. The place is nice. I wouldn't go back.

Girls Brunch

By Farrah F |

Just ate here for lunch the food was good. We sat next to the window with the view of the streets and other stores. This place is pricey but definitely should try once. The staff was very polite very attentive. We had a great However I didn’t get a chance to do the high tea which starts at 2pm btw. Highly recommend to make reservations and specify high tea if you want to experience that part. Which I probably will try again next time....

Just lovely

By Jacques M J |

I stopped there for a business lunch, and was the best decision. The food was just so delicious, and clean. The staff were so effective, very professional, and everthing was so clean. I have not been doing desert for over a year but this time had to try it, and was WOW. I showed up without a reservation but the good thing i was shopping...make sure you make your reservation. Great place, and would definitely go back!

This has to be the best department store dining. Atmosphere amazing. Service amazing. Food brilliant. A must spot for lunch.

The Best salad I have ever had!

By Jason H |

When I was recently out in San Francisco we stumbled upon the restaurant in Neiman Marcus thinking it was the rooftop restaurant that was actually located in the adjacent Macy's building. Since we were already there we decided to stay and boy am I glad we did. The fresh bread and flavored butter was a great start, and the warm seafood salad was amazing. The sea scallops and shrimp were perfectly seasoned and the salad dressing was light and flavorful. The view was also very nice as was our waiter. It is a little pricey for lunch, but would definitely recommend treating yourself to lunch if you are in the area.

Top Notch shopping and Dining

By AJSM |

Awesome experience while shopping in San Francisco. The food and wine quality were tasty, fresh and better than many restaurants. Must do experience while in San Francisco.

A restaurant to my liking.........................

By Isca F |

When we booked, we mentioned that it is our anniversary and we were given a table with a great view of Union Square. This is a very popular restaurant as it did not take long to fill the place. For lunch we were given a warm popover to start. Then we ordered lobster bisque and it was to die for..... creamy , good blend of vegies, wine not overpowering, and seasoned just perfect. Hadn't have a delicious bisque since we've been in Europe. The open chicken sandwich was good. My crab and shrimp egg salad sandwich was very good because of the dressing. The mango sorbet was very good..one can really taste the mango. All in all it was a delicious and delightful lunch......

Delicious as always!

By darthvayd |

My wife and I love enjoying lunch at The Rotunda. Our favorite dishes are the lobster bisque soup and the lobster club sandwich! Oh so delicious! The popovers with strawberry butter are crazy good.

Will go elsewhere next time for Afternoon Tea

By Sunflow811 |

We hadn’t been to the Rotunda for Afternoon Tea since 2019 which we had really enjoyed. We looked forward to today’s visit but unfortunately left disappointed. The staff were exceptional but the food served for the afternoon tea had changed and was not what we had expected. The bottom layer was scones and the middle layer had two tasteless cucumber finger sandwiches, two smoked salmon finger sandwich and to our dismay two chicken sandwiches on croissants and two pastrami sandwiches on croissants which should have been on their lunch menu not afternoon tea. I’ll try somewhere else next time.

Beautiful Restaurant in Neiman Marcus

By Maria O |

After shopping, we decided to stop by for lunch at the Rotunda restaurant. Arriving at about 2:30 in the afternoon, with a reservation the place was literally packed. They close at 400:pm so they are anxious to move tables. We had a short wait and they seated us at a lovely table. Our waiter took our wine order and wanted to take our lunch order. We wanted to wait to until after a few sips of wine and he was good with that request. After ordering our entrees, they came out with delicious popovers for each of us and a small cup of boullion. We ordered : - Burger and fries - Burger was rare just the way I like it and fries were hot and crispy. - My husband ordered the Caesar salad topped with white anchovies, croutons which was delicious ! - We finished with an Affogato for dessert which hit the spot! The only minus about our experience was that the busser we had was so anxious to clear the dishes that I didn't get a chance to finish my boullion before he whisked away the cup. So I learned from that so I guarded my plate and told him I am not finished eating. The food was very well done and I would definitely return for another .

Attentive service, delicious food in an unique setting

By Dan K |

The Rotunda provided an amazing lunch experience for our day in San Francisco, with friendly and attentive service, delicious food and a stunning setting. Our glass was never low, and our waitress made the entire afternoon a pleasure. The lobster club and the Chandon Brut were the highlights.

Leonel is a great bartender; don't go for food, but for the ambiance and tea

By UptownGirl415 |

Leo (or Leonel) is a great bartender. He really adds to the ambiance by engaging with the clientele here. While the front staff who seated us are often stuffy and off-putting, Leonel is an asset for their lack of customer service. In terms of food, the menu here is really for the ladies who lunch crowd. Their afternoon tea is quite nice, especially if sitting near a window. The tuna burger with wasabi is nice and fresh as is the bread with strawberry butter. Everything else is overpriced and somewhat salty.

The welcoming didn't ruin the experience

By MunirKun |

All up it was a great experience. Food is fine and tasty, Bryan provided an excellent service, and the place has a nice vibe. The only bad taste was the welcoming. John was really rude and I almost decided to leave. I am glad that I didn't.

Beautiful

By ThreeZy |

Beautiful restaurant with good food and impressive service. The broth aperitif and popovers were tasty. Would have loved a better view from our window table but construction is ongoing. I plan on making this a must stop whenever I’m in the city.

Fabulous Place!

By BDPaige |

Great way to celebrate my birthday with friends. First time in San Francisco and first time at the rotunda.

Fabulous Lunch!!

By 2Klecks |

Request a window table when you make your reservation. This was a treat for us. We brought our daughter and son-in-law here from Sacramento for the holiday weekend. Loved shopping in Neiman Marcus, had a short wait for our table, then very much enjoyed our lunch. Yes, it's pricey, but worth every penny for the views and just getting to be there in Union Square. If you get lucky, you'll have Dahn as your waiter and he'll take great care of you. Highly recommend as a special treat or for a special event for a small group up to six. Enjoy!!

Afternoon Tea Service

By Deana M |

I love afternoon tea so I try to go wherever I travel to. I decided to try the afternoon tea ($45/person) here primarily because it was slightly cheaper than The Palace Hotel ($68/person). The ambiance is casual and it's not a typical afternoon tea venue since they also serve lunch here. When we got seated, we were given a starter which was basically chicken broth served in a tiny teacup and a popover with strawberry butter. The popover was warm and soft but the strawberry butter had barely a hint of strawberry. As for their afternoon tea service, they offer Dammann Frères teas (French tea company) paired with the typical scones with jams and cream, mini sandwiches (cucumber, smoked salmon and lobster sandwich) and petite desserts. My husband opted for their lobster club sandwich instead, which was a good size portion for $34. We paid the bill leaving no leftovers.

Delicious foods while people watching

By Zman47 |

Each time we visit the City (San Francisco) a lunch at the Rotunda is mandatory. The Rotunda is a high end , white table cloth setting with delicious foods and first rate service. Ask for a view window seat about one thirty for a very special meal. The crab and prawn salad is one of the best salads this reviewer has experienced A small cup of broth, a giant popover plus a main are the standard. My companion has a glass of champagne while I enjoy the excellent coffee Save room for dessert. We usually order the special chocolate chip cookies! N.B. If you smile and sing popover praises one might be gifted a second one. They are brought directly from the oven. The strawberry whipped butter sends the popover into the category of fantastic. Reservations are a must. Smart dress is recommended Best ever as a place to people watch.

Upscale for a nice lunch, view & setting

By D i |

A girlfriend and I were there for a light lunch. Pricy, but based on the beautifully bright venue, views of Union Square and food, expected. Also, it's in Neiman Marcus, so expected this.

When in SF, I am on the meal plan here for lunch!

By MarkRanchoMirage |

Since I usually stay close by, The Rotunda becomes my go to restaurant for lunch. And when I say lunch, I forego the table seating and long waits for seating and head to the bar. The bartenders are ridiculously friendly and helpful, the food is top notch for lunch, and you get some of the best people watching in SF from that bar. Prices are not cheap

A Delicious, Elegant Lunch

By bsimosd |

When in San Francisco, we usually prefer to have our main meal at lunch. This was the case with The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus, where we enjoyed a most delicious lunch. It had been a while since we had eaten there, so we were pleasantly surprised that they still served a popover with your meal...very unique and tasty! The service was excellent; the food plentiful and delicious; and the ambience very elegant.

High Tea is Over The Top

By Kate197065 |

Recently enjoyed the Hgh Tea in the Rotunda. I frequent tea meals all over the country and this is one of the best. The sandwich and dessert varieties are unique. The scone was particularly tasty. Be sure to make a reservation and say you intend to order Tea as they won't always have it available unless you do. Have fun!

Banking off the views

By Wanderlustfulme |

View is superb. Definitely make a reservation in advance for window seating. Service was sub par for the area, and even more so for the swankiness of the restaurant. There were two unmistakable hairs in my boyfriends soup - which was subsequently removed from our bill. Overall, I would recommend if you're visiting the SF area; just check your entrees for any unwanted additions. Gross.

Simply Lovely

By Colleen K |

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus is a perfect place to sit down and rest after a long day of shopping. The restaurant is beautiful. It is a lovely place to have tea. They serve these super size Popovers to everyone complimentary. So it's nice to eat light so you can thoroughly enjoy the delicious Popover.

Disappointed in the quality of the food this time

By TravelgalCathy415 |

It's been 10 years since I've had tea at the Rotunda, and this time it was not during the Christmas holiday. Since that time, I've been to tea many times in different cities and am well versed on the offerings of high tea. I took a friend here to celebrate her 80th birthday, and while the view and setting was lovely, and the service was good; I was somewhat disappointed in the food provided for the tea. The sandwiches were a bit dry, and I only had a scone and one macaroon which were just okay. Everything tasted a bit day-old. Maybe it was an off day in the kitchen. Pinkies Up!

By Jeanette Jane |

I went to the Rotunda for a casual business meeting over high tea and it did not disappoint. The atmosphere was lovely, yet not overly done. The tea, snacks and service were prompt and delightful. The only issues were that the hostess demonstrated dissonance with my colleague who got there before me. This was due to not being able to locate the reservation. Also, it was a lot warmer inside than expected. Overall, a charming place that I will visit again soon!

Ladies who lunch

Old fashioned ladies who lunch venue. Beautiful setting. Saw no kids. Best on weekdays so you can experience the real ladies who lunch.

Fancy & chic restaurant in Union Square

By Lisa C |

Never had a bad meal at the Rotunda restaurant in Neiman Marcus San Francisco. I recommend getting reservations through open table as they are usually booked. You can’t go wrong with ordering any of their sandwiches and seafood options. The staff and service here are top notch and accommodating. Definitely an awesome option for a romantic meal or a nice outing with family or with your girlfriends. Their dome ceiling makes your pictures look so fancy & beautiful. I look forward to returning to try their high tea. It looks so fun and yummy and they are known for it.

Love the popover!

By jan10860 |

Beautiful setting for a lunch with some bubbly. The stained glass is amazing and the architecture is lovely. We didn't have reservations but the host made a space for us at the bar. We had attentive service, and delicious food. I had a yummy popover, with the watermelon salad, which was divine. Recommended!

Lunch

By 659waikitc |

I was invited to this lovely place for lunch. The atmosphere is elegant and gorgeous ! The place is wide open with big glass , spectacular !The foods were great and it was nice to start with the lobster soup! It opens at 11am on Sunday and it was filled up fast! Make reservation a week beforehand if you have a big party !

Beautiful in atmosphere, taste and its people.

By Jenni G |

Beautiful. Having not been out and about like the rest of us for over 15 months, our first trip and fine dining experience was to The Rotunda. We were cheerfully greeted, seated, and waited upon by exceptional staff. We were never without and never kept waiting. That's just the service. The food was amazing. My favorite was the Lobster Bisque. With all the talk lately about the lack of lobster in the lobster dishes, be reassured that is not the case here. The bisque was perfect temp, layered in flavor and was one of those eats that I had not been in a fine dining restaurant, I would have licked my bowl clean. My husband had the crab melt and I had the chicken pallaird. We shared a bit of our selections with each other and thoroughly enjoyed the gifts. The crab melt was devine. My chicken was grilled and seasoned that included a little bit of crushed red pepper to give a nice bite. Overall, our return to in restaurant dining was perfection.

Great for Tourists But Not Locals

By lezleesuzanne |

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco is a beautiful space with good food and cocktails, but in desperate need of a deep cleaning and refurbishing! As a tourist, definitely not a place to miss - especially during the month of December with their grand Christmas tree! However, if you are a local you may be disappointed by their lack of upkeep and attention to cleanliness. The staff is absolutely fantastic! So, looking forward to their new carpet, upholstery and cleaning detail.

good place to rest

By lovetotraveljch |

We stopped here (after a couple hours in China Town) to have iced tea and popovers with strawberry butter. Great! We didn't want a big lunch because of a banquet later, so we asked if we could just get tea and a popover. We ate in the lounge area of the bar and enjoyed it very much. Two teas and two popovers were $7.94. That is the cheapest thing you can do in Neiman Marcus!!!! AND the popover was DELICIOUS.

Fun place to eat, great waiters at the bar

By 787sallyb |

Popovers are good too. Sat down at the bar for lunch for a break from shopping (not my favorite things to do but every 15 years or so I have to update my wardrobe for public appearances). Waiter who took care of us was especially lovely. Food was terrific. Nice break in the middle of the day.

Coffee and Strudel in the Rotunda

Beautiful place, the food ok 👍 maybe not excellent, but good, you have to book online if you don't have to wait for a table, the service is friendly and fast

High Tea Under A Stain Glass Dome

By Stephanie W |

On the 4th floor of Neiman Marcus is the Rotunda a chic restaurant under the stained glass dome, where you can dine and have a prime view of Union Square. After a bit of shopping, this restaurant is the perfect spot for high tea where you can have sandwiches, tea, sweets and champagne and do some people watching while you chat with friends.

Afternoon Tea Lunch

By Mike B |

One of those days you just want to relax and catch up with your friends is this great place on the 4th Floor of Neiman Marcus . The Rotunda. Had Salad a Bottle of bubbles and oysters to complement the Afternoon tray of Sandwiches is good ..we were not rushed by the servers as it gave us time to finish our bottle and catching up .. I’d come back if I have guest from out of town

Overrated and Expensive Tea Experience

By snowglobish |

My friends and I paid $60 per person for very average finger foods. I have never been to an afternoon tea experience where the scones are cold and stale. This has to be the first. The finger sandwiches didn't look fresh either and the desserts were "eh." Overall, probably won't be coming back. Very disappointed. Neiman, try doing some research of London tea places that can do tea right.

Classic Old San Francisco with an Elegant Flair

By TKPeacock |

Definitely need reservations and a treat for anyone wanting great service, atmosphere and food. Save room for the hot popovers with strawberry butter that are served upon arrival. Loved the Salmon Salad with fresh peas, artichoke hearts and a delicious, light vinaigrette that was good to the last bite. Great wine list with emphasis on the great wines of California. Shop pre or post your meal and enjoy the splendor of Neiman Marcus.

Great Lunch Spot

By Dean B |

This is a great place for lunch, especially if you can sit along the window with a nice view over Union Square. The food was good and the service was first class. I would recommend the crab melt sandwich and the cherry tart for dessert. A real hidden oasis.

Slow Service

By CrestlineMD |

I have dined at the Rotunda for lunch nearly ever time I have visited SF. The locations is central to shopping and the views are gorgeous. This visit had a few issues. The server was very slow and later explained she was covering while another server was on break. We had a reservation during peak lunch hours so this was surprising. We barely made our 1pm meeting despite arriving and being seated at 11:30. We had no time for coffee or dessert due to the incredibly slow service. Regarding the food and drinks, the strawberry and mint Moscow mule was very strong and not drinkable. The chicken wrap was filled with overcooked dark meat. The view was still gorgeous and the setting unique. The cheese plate was excellent. We will most likely return in the future and hope this was an off day...

Good But Pricey

By chanyu1 |

If you don't mind spending at least $50 per person for lunch and you didn't drive to SF downtown, this might be a good place for you to eat lunch. But be warned that if it's a weekend, you better make a reservation at least 2 weeks in advance. Even then, you'll probably still will not get a Sunday date as Sundays are extremely popular here. One of the reasons is on Sundays, you could park at any meter for free and also use the Yellow zones. On any other day, prepare to spend quite a few bucks for parking... You also do not need to go through the Neiman Marcus store to access the restaurant as there is a separate entrance and elevator located on Post St. that takes you directly to the restaurant. It's located directly across from Chanel on Post Street. As for the food, I highly recommend the Lobster bisque and the chicken salad. One of the favorites with diners is the Lobster club sandwich but I find it to be too much like a tuna-salad or chicken-salad sandwich. The lobster fries (appetizer) was also somewhat disappointing as it should be called Fried lobster instead because it's basically lobster meat fried in a batter. The service from the waiting staff is very attentive and pleasant. If you do not mind paying the price, try this restaurant on your next shopping trip at Union Square...

Lukewarm on the Afternoon Tea

By sd1042015 |

My son and I seek out tea experiences whenever we travel and we'd really enjoyed Afternoon Tea at the Rotunda two years ago during our first visit to San Francisco. This week's version just missed the mark. We had reservations for the first seating but were stuck in the back at a booth even though there were window tables available. The price has increased $10 per person and if anything the food quality has declined, although the complimentary chicken consommé, popover and strawberry butter were delicious. The waiter dropped off the tea without leaving sugar and disappeared for a long, long time so our first cup was disappointing. The scones were tiny but very good and I would have preferred more, as the rest of the sweets were too similar - mostly forgettable versions of mini-cupcakes. We are ending our SF visit today with tea at the Fairmont and I'm really looking forward to it.

Lunch in an elegant location

By Maria752013 |

The restaurant is located in Neiman Marcus store from Union Square. This is an elegant place, quite expensive, with good service, tasty couvert and healthy food well presented; for each course from the menu they present also the calories/energetic value. You can also have afternoon tea with cookies. We have taken: cobfit duck salad, salmon, crab salad, burger and cookies as desert. All were good and tasty.

Lunch

By Teresa S |

What a venue! Too eat under the stained glass and look out over Union Square transports you to a different place and time. They start you out with a warm drink of broth, and once you have ordered they bring out Yorkshire type bread. The meals were all very good, and the presentation exceptional. Service was what you would expect in a venue like this. For anyone who is looking for the white tablecloth environment this is it. A must see at least.

Fantastic spot!

By Robert T |

Where to begin....savor the majestic architecture of the Rotunda as you look out across the glass windows to Union Square and down below to the shopping floors of the store; relish their High Tea (reservations are essential); take a shopping or tourist break for a libation and appetizers; enjoy a great salad or meal here..... This place never ever disappoints and the servers and their helpers are unfailingly good. The only area for some great improvement is the off-putting condescension of those who greet you as if summing up whether to let you in or not! Move on in and enjoy fantastic spot!

The Rotunda - a hidden gem

By Lordgin1 |

One of San Francisco's best kept secrets is The Rotunda in Neiman Marcus. In the heart of Union Square, The Rotunda is perhaps San Francisco's finest settings for lunch or afternoon tea. A beautiful setting on the 4th floor of Neiman Marcus, dining under a stained glass dome with beautiful views of Union Square. As if the beautiful atmosphere wasn't enough, patrons are also served some of the freshest and tastiest food in the city. Unfortunately The Rotunda is not open for dinner but breakfast or dinner here will carry one through the day. The meal always starts with a complimentary small cup of consomme which is bewildering but quite pleasant. A favorite is the fish sandwich which is quite hearty and tasty. Breaded and fried but not enough to overwhelm the taste of the fish. The truffle fries are also very fragrant and tasteful. An excellent restaurant that should always be on one's list when visiting!

Son’s 30th Birthday

By Bluma F |

With crazy schedules, we decided no party this year. He thought a relaxing lunch with his girlfriend, brother, us and sister in law would be nice. I don’t remember how I thought of the Rotunda as it’s been years since I had been there. After checking the menu, I saw they still catered to lunch time, even on Sundays. We couldn’t get in through Open Table so I called and the lady made a reservation for us. They followed up the day before to see if we were still planning to come . Everyone got a little dressed up. The room is a little worn but the atmosphere was perfect. We had a large booth , and although the entire restaurant slowly filled up, we didn’t have to yell or talk loudly to hear each other. The menu has been updated to cater most every diet. It’s a little pricey, so check the menu out first. They serve a free starter soup and their renown pastry puff bread. Everyone was very happy with what they ordered. Salmon to burgers. And they also remembered to finish the meal with a birthday cupcake and candle! Out waitress, Megan and bus boys were excellent!.. sorry, we stayed for 2+ hours!

My friends and I went here for a late lunch before heading off to see the musical, Beach Blanket Babylon. There were 7 of us in our group and they were able to accommodate us at a large booth in the corner. I ordered the lobster roll sandwich, which was a favorite for most of the group. The cocktail drinks were yummy. The best thing though, were the popovers! We just kept eating them and reordering them. The atmosphere at the Rotunda make it a special place to dine. It is fancy, but relaxing at the same time. Afterwards, you can go shopping at Neiman Marcus!

Very disappointed

By Aimee P |

We were so excited to have afternoon tea in the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus and we were thoroughly disappointed. I almost never write reviews but we were so dissatisfied that I had to share... The only good thing was the view and the beautiful stained glass surroundings. The Damman Fréres tea itself was delicious, but the fact that they are so cheap that they will only let you try one flavor astounded us! They wouldn’t even bring a fresh pot, they just kept pouring hot water over the same leaves! The fact that they don’t have a proper sugar pot, but just give you a rectangular container of sugar packets was completely tacky. The sandwiches were good but not amazing and the scones were tiny. As for the desserts, they were ok but the brownie was awful! The wait service was definitely underwhelming, not very friendly and even tried to charge $20 extra for a few additional sandwiches that we requested (to their credit, they did remove that from the bill when I asked them to). To sum up, we have been to afternoon tea at the Palace hotel in SF, the Empress hotel in Victoria, BC, a little place in England’s countryside and four different places in London (some more expensive than the Rotunda and some less expensive), they were all incredible and each time my love grew for the afternoon tea experience. Not so with Neiman Marcus, who has such a reputation for luxury but ended up being tacky and cheap.

What used to be a SF institution has dramatically changed for the bad

By globbiztravel |

Been coming here for over 15 years whether breakfast, lunch, drinks or afternoon tea / it was always a delight and excitement to hang out and enjoy the Rotunda experience. Over the last 6-8 months we ( and others) have noticed that Rotunda has been experimenting with changing dish portion sizes and general look of the dish in some instances. Today, I was in the mood for their French dip, which is typically oversized and stuffed with the best cooked prime rib, cheese and horseradish sauce. I ordered the sandwich but what was delivered looked like half a sandwich and barely any meat in the sandwich yet same price it's been for a long time. The French fries used to be shoestring and now mediocre steak fries. I asked the waiter named Noe what was up with the sandwich and he lied and bs me telling me it's always been that way. All he had to do was take it back stuff more meat and bring it back, but instead all he wanted to do was to further engage me as the customer in a demeaning and disrespectful manner, and on and on. Then when I thought he was done berating me / he tells me to go to Coles restaurant in LA if I want good French Dip. I mean come on, why would you say something like that to a long term customer. It's sad to see a long time institution like Rotunda fail in this way. I don't think I'll be returning again.

many choices on the menu.. union square

By georgia h |

I checked the menu online and ordered the lobster club sandwich, which comes with chips and popover, Service was very good. The sandwich was excellent..the popover was good but not outstanding..Former Mayor Willie Brown was front and center greeting many well wishers..I am happy that Nieman Marcus preserved the City of Paris (department store) glass ceiling..

Annual Family Tradition - Huge Disappointment

By Grammie626 |

We have been coming to Neiman Marcus Rotunda for several years for our family lunch during the Christmas Season. We make our reservations several months in advance to ensure we are able to enjoy lunch in the Rotunda. However, each year for the past three years, the lunch has become worse...but we keep coming for the experience. This year may be our last, since the service and quality of food were both awful. We had to send our ahi back to the kitchen, as it was very "mushy," and the crab/shrimp louie was salty, indicating the fish was likely frozen. The service was horrible. It took at least 10 minutes for anyone to even recognize us and offer water or beverage. Then took at least 10 more minutes to get our drinks. We realize this is supposed to be an "experience," but service and quality of food are very important, especially for the price of the food and drinks. This restaurant needs help, not only in the kitchen, but also with the wait staff. It was a huge disappointment, and definitely not something that Neiman Marcus could be proud of.

Tea for three

By Kristen M |

My friend and I love to do tea at The Brown Palace in Denver so while we were in San Francisco we decided to test out a new place. The popovers were great, however I felt the sandwiches and desserts were lacking. The Rotunda was beautiful and it was a fun experience, but next time we're in the city I think we'll try elsewhere.

Special occasion splurge near Union Square? This is the spot

By sunshine_susan |

The view of the stain glass window is stupendous, and, that would be enough, but the food is excellent - all of us - one bride to be and 3 helpers - had terrific salads and/ or entrees (complete with calorie counts!) and were very happy with it all. It's pricey - especially if you order a celebration bottle of Prosecco as we did - but it is undoubtedly worth it if it is an occasion such as this. Go for it.

Amazing experience

By Reginald R |

The place was amazing with a great view of Union Square if your by the window. The food was delicious as well. I wanted to visit due to all the reviews I had seen prior to visiting San Francisco. The staff was super nice and went out of their way to make our dining experience one to remember.

Simply Wonderful

By Salton_Sea_Lass |

It’s very pricey for an average earning person like me, but worth saving up for an annual splurge on beauty. If you’re going in a group of two or more—even if no one among you is vegan or vegetarian—I strongly suggest you place at least one plant based order because the little sandwiches are so tasty, healthy, and very beautifully presented, as you might imagine. Though it’s been over a month (apologies for my delay), I want to call out my server Charlie who went above and beyond to correct an error someone on staff had made. Please make the effort to come very nicely dressed as the fellow diners play an important role as well. High tea in such a place is a blessed hour or two to forget societal collapse. (Indeed, two days after my tea at the Rotunda, downstairs NM was invaded by a brazen looting party of 10 criminals who in broad daylight ran in and stole a bunch of expensive purses that one percenters like to flaunt.)

Great food and Rotunda!

By Barbara W |

Starting with the Popovers.... onto a great salad or entree. The Neiman Marcus Rotunda is a must for tourists and locals.

Family lunch

By Alexandre K |

Service failed to impress first at table allocation as we got a secluded remote table despite our request for a table within the restaurant main space; the hostess claimed that now that we’ve been assigned a server it’s too late to change. So the clients are here to accommodate the servers!!! Moreover, the table was so remote that the server didn’t even serve the typical brioche bread brought for all guests. We made the remark at the end of our meal so they offered those breads in boxes to take away but that was too late. Nothing exciting about the food either. So all in all quiet a disappointing experience. Will not come back

Excellent view

By ss1783 |

Excellent view of the Union Square heart and Union Square. The food was delicious. The waitress seemed to be have a bad day with an unhappy smile her face. Awesome setting and ambiance.

Nice lunch

By Michael H |

Nice atmosphere. Good food. Great service. It's a bit spendy ($60 for lobster bisque and the cheese plate).

Fabulous San Francisco!

By Victoria T |

Fabulous restaurant, with a gorgeous stained glass dome, which the seating is arranged around. The window seats offer a great view of downtown SF The food was fabulous, and the service excellent. Very varied menu and an excellent wine list.

Dining with a nice view of union square

By Philippe R |

After some hours of shopping we decided to rest and diner in this restaurant. The meals were excellent, the service at high standard and the view awesome

Great food & space / HORRIBLE service

By wineing |

Such a special place to go with a great (though VERY pricey) menu. If you get a table near window - spectacular view of Union Square... The overwhelming and unacceptable issue is that service is HORRIBLE. Service doesn't commensurate with cost of food and wine. It's like eating in a 4/5 star restaurant with Applebee's or McD's type service. Really is. Even the bus boys can't bring water for table in a reasonable amount of time. And by the by...when I told the waiter that I literally asked for water 4 times - he said: "water isn't my job"! Oh my... I've had lunch as well as tea service there; and for tea service - also extremely bad service. We were begging for milk for tea too! It's unreasonable to me to serve that kind of food, charge those types of prices and have such shoddy service. Do hope management sees this and makes an attempt to change...

Popovers with strawberry butter = heaven

By busybeachjenn |

This restaurant is just the thing you need after a day of shopping. Try to get a window seat for the view of Union Square but if you can't, don't worry the rotunda itself also provides a gorgeous view. I've been here a number of times for lunch but the menu changes seasonally so I can't remember forming any go-to orders. I do always enjoy the complimentary popovers with strawberry butter (sometimes I order seconds) and the Neiman Marcus chocolate chip cookie for dessert. It comes in a cute box with the recipe inside in case you want to recreate it at home. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone who enjoys the quintessential San Francisco shop-til-you-drop-then-have-lunch experience!

Beautiful food

By Lloyd M |

Surprisingly great option when at Moscone Center and you want to avoid the hysteria. Found it on OpenTable and was really pleased. Beautifully appointed with nice views. I started with the lobster bisque and it was fantastic, would go back just for that. Then had an asparagus and smoked salmon salad (daily special), which was just the correct size. The restaurant does feel a little pretension but it is a great little oasis in the area.

Great Time for Tea!!

By luvhorses2017 |

My family took my mother in law here for Tea, what a fabulous time!! We were able to reserve a table by the window ~ beautiful views!!! It was very pricey, however, it was a "once in a life time" event ~ so well worth it!!!

Excellent! Had the crab and shrimp salad with a few glasses of wine. Great escape after shopping. Even got a great recommendation for dinner!

A San Francisco Institution

By h2oblue |

We visit San Francisco two to three times a year, and over time, The Rotunda has become our farewell tradition. After packing our suitcases, we pack our bellies , reminiscing over the trip. It's our way of saying "until we meet again" with gratitude, champagne, and one last great meal in our favorite food city. This is hands-down one of my fave rooms to dine in. Set beneath the iconic stained-glass dome, once the crowning feature of the historic City of Paris department store, it feels like stepping into a more refined era of San Francisco. White table cloths, floor-to-ceiling windows bathe the room in natural light and offer panoramic views of Union Square below. It's especially magical during the holidays when the huge Christmas tree is alit with red and green twinkling. The menu is a blend of refined California cuisine and French influences . You'll see it in the beurre blanc, the béarnaise, and other sauces. At the same time, the kitchen highlights NorCal tradition with staples like the Dungeness Crab Melt and Crab & Shrimp Louie. Every meal begins with a warm amuse-bouche of chicken consommé, served in a porcelain demitasse. Warm, savory, and sooo comforting. Especially on a cold SF day. Then it's followed by a golden popover, airy and crisp, paired with strawberry whipped butter that's as light and airy with a wonderful strawberry fragrance A few of our long-time favorites: * The Lobster Club - Decadent, layered with bacon, avocado, and lemon-herb aioli. Served with crisp fries, it's both luxurious and deeply satisfying. * The Seafood Tower - A chilled Poseidon's jewel box of oysters, shrimp cocktail, tuna poke, and Dungeness crab, beautifully assembled over crushed ice. Best enjoyed with a champagne flight--particularly the Laurent-Perrier Rosé. * The Dungeness Crab Melt - Rich, creamy, and undeniably good, though I can barely finish half. (No waste though, I always pack it to go and gift it to someone on the street who can enjoy a good meal) *The Dungeness Crab Risotto - Delicious, but a bit rich for my taste. It's basically a big plate of creamy starch. Best shared family-style as a side. It's a lot for one person unless you're a black belt in starch. They also offer rotating daily specials that highlight seasonal ingredients. The service is consistently excellent. Attentive, professional, and warm. I'd even say it rivals that of some Michelin-starred restaurants. And as a bonus: no surprise fees like healthcare or employee surcharges tacked onto the bill. Revoir, lovely city by the Bay. See you in December, when the tree across the way glows and the city once again is bathed in holiday lights. Happy Eating

Elegant but relaxed

By bitsytraveler |

Had a holiday lunch there with friends, and couldn't ask for anything nicer. Neiman Marcus has a reputation for the store, and it carries over to the restaurant. Lovely and delicious cocktails, food, and table setting. Our server Dahn made it even better with his conversation - he is fun and genuine. Going to definitely make this a tradition.

Skip this tea time

By lagingpasyal |

Came here to celebrate a friend’s birthday. There were 6 ladies in our party. We paid about $70 for 2 scones. 4 of small sandwiches, 4 kinds of dessert, one tiny crab on a cone & a small cup of broth. The Popover served was light buttery & delicious and probably the only good item on the tea time menu. If you are thinking of coming here for the experience, save your money. Not worth it.

Perfect lunch

By Smilektk |

This place is like a breath of fresh air from the hustle bustle of the city. It's open and big and beautiful. They set you up with complimentary fresh pastries, yummy homemade butter and a mini soup. I had a delicious glass of rose and a panini, next time I'm in SF I will def be back.

NOT worth it....

By Ken L |

The setting was GREAT, service was a C- and the food was just okay. It was totally not worth the $160 bill for lunch for 2. For the price you are paying the service should be a top notch A+ but it wasn’t. Our drinks sat at the bar for at least 10 minutes an then we waited to get the servers attention to get the check. It wasn’t the worst place ever but based on their pricing model we expected a MUCH better experience.

Lovely place

By Felicia L |

A lovely place for meals with really nice decoration. Ambiance was alright, probably due to the lunch crowd. Best to make reservations if one doesn't want to wait for too long.

LUNCH with a view

By Shani S |

My daughters and I enjoyed lunch at the Rotunda yesterday while shopping. Our salesperson recommended it. The setting was great inside a bright and airy rotunda with huge windows looking out onto Union Square. The service was prompt and friendly. The food was fantastic. I had the crab louie salad and it was both healthy and delicious. They had the nutrition information and calorie count right in the menu to assist in making both a delicious and nutritious choice. One of my daughters had the salmon entree and another had a beet, goat cheese, quinoa salad with chicken. I tasted hers and it was fantastic. We didn't have dessert but we were so satisfied that it was not needed!

Delicious lunch great service

By Skiathite |

Such a fabulous spot with the beautiful rotunda glass ceiling. I've just had the turkey burger with maple bacon and I've never had better. The service has been attentive without being overwhelming. As a person travelling alone I've been allowed to sit and enjoy my meal without being made to feel that I'm taking up a table. Great view over Union Square as well. Book ahead if you want a good table.

Great food and Beautiful ambiance

By Peach Speaks |

The restaurant is beautiful and classy. We love their foods too. All dishes were delicious, especially the Lobster fries. You need to try this when you visit The Rotunda, it is a great value and so delicious. Our waitress was nice and friendly, however, we could see that the people who did not serve our table would give you a dirty look every time we went to take photos of their beautiful decor and view. Most of them came across as snobbish and giving bad attitude. Well hey, we visited your restaurant for a reason. That is why this place does not deserve five stars rating. Other than that, I will be back for the foods and the place.

Yummy food, great service

By Deb L |

We arrived here for an early lunch and were seated immediately. We were promptly proceeded with water and an amuse bouche- in this case a tiny shot of delicious consume with an itsy bitsy pastry :-) Then cane the very yummy bread roll popover and butter- I sometimes think I could eat here with just the free beginngs. I ordered a French Dip, while the steak sandwich was very nice, the dip had no flavour. For dessert I ordered pannecota- while this was lovely, the caramel sauce was paired with something quite sour and was unpalatable. Overall, very satisfying.

Lunch is better than the tea service

By travel-world-mom |

I have had both afternoon tea and lunch, on different trips of course. The afternoon tea was just OK. The tea sandwiches and desserts were not very refined and delicate as should be in high quality afternoon tea sets, and certainly not on the same level as top-rated high tea at major hotels in cities like London, New York, Hong Kong, Tokyo and Buenos Aires. They feel and taste like something from your neighborhood bakery, which would only cost a fraction of the price. In contrast, the quality of the lunch was much better. The chicken consomme and the popover were unique and outstanding. The main dishes we tried were full of flavor and well executed. The ambiance, service and view are of course what you come here for. Overall I recommend the lunch.

A treat and a special one as it was our last week.....

By John |

After almost 5 years of living in the Bay Area we decided to re-visit a few favourites. This was a late discovery but didn't disappoint. The champagne selection by the glass is a lovely way to start the lunch and the food is very good. It's quite old fashioned service and a pleasure to sit and have a lovely view and be surrounded by nice architecture.

Awesome Experience

By KarenL93940 |

We have been to the Rotunda several times for lunch and have always enjoyed it. This time, in an effort to prepare our 12-year-old son for his first trip to London, we decided to have high tea around 2:30 pm. We were hungry and tempted to order our lunch favorites (the lobster club sandwich and the crab melt) but determined to try something new, we ordered high tea and a bottle of champagne. We were not disappointed! The food for tea service was plentiful and delicious--and we still got to enjoy the traditional chicken consomme and popovers with strawberry butter that are typically served with lunch. The variety of finger sandwiches were tasty and included egg salad with bacon, crab salad, thinly sliced cucumber and chicken salad. The scones and treats were also good. We particularly liked the lemon tart and the raspberry/chocolate dessert. We were unable to eat all of the treats, so the sever, Nick, kindly wrapped them up with an extra popover and strawberry butter to take with us. After we left, we realized that we forgot our sweets on the table. Disappointed we had left them behind, my husband and son raced back to get them, but the restaurant was closing and table was already cleared. To our surprise, Nick happily packed us another bag with even more treats and popovers! We always enjoy going to the Rotunda for a special lunch beneath the lovely stained glass dome, but our experience this time was especially awesome. All of the staff we encountered were professional, friendly and inviting, but Nick really went above and beyond. Our son is looking forward to having high tea in London! Thank you!

Amazing food !

By Scottishperson |

While visiting my aunt in SF we took her here for a special lunch and it was amazing. I booked before leaving Scotland and asked for a nice view. We had one overlooking Union Square with the Christmas Tree just up. The waiters were wonderful, asking if all was well etc. The mains were delicious, I had the fish with quinoa. I then had strawberry shortcake (which I had 20 years ago) but it was not shortcake but sponge ? It was my friends birthday and they presented her with a small cake, which was lovely.

Perfect as Always

By K ODonnell |

We always visit here when in San Francisco. The usual popover and chicken broth didn’t disappoint. Our lunch was superb and the service impeccable. They gave us cupcakes at no charge for our anniversary. Sitting in the rotunda is def a bucket list item. San Francisco in general has gone downhill but the Rotunda Cafe is always a dreamy experience.

Impressive spot!

By CharlieTaylor |

Located within the Neimman Marcus department store on the corner of Union Square. Beautiful in-store restaurant with impressive stained glass domed ceiling with huge windows overlooking the hassle and bustle of Union Square. Busy restaurant so booking advisable but we still managed to get a table without a reservation although not at a prime table. Friendly staff. Served renowned 'popover' appetiser. As a Brit, we know these as Yorkshire puddings but are served here in place of bread along with a special strawberry 'butter'. We only ate one popover each but other reviews advise these can be requested continuously if desired! We both ordered burgers which were tasty. Expect delays during busy periods. Worth a visit if only to take in the surroundings and to enjoy a popover!

Good high tea

By Angela Turner |

Elegant, good quality high tea at Neiman Marcus. Good variety of sandwiches, sweets and scones. Plenty of food to fill you up. 4 or 5 choices of teas to choose from. Great views of union square. A tad on the slow side on service but pretty friendly staff. Price is righ on with other high teas. The only thing that bothered my is that they automatically add 20 percent tip to your ticket. Overall, a good high tea experience.

Classic, elegant, ladies-who-lunch spot with excellent food and service!

By Carolyn G |

My 16 year old daughter and I had lunch at The Rotunda and had a wonderful experience. The decor is lovely, service is top notch, and food is excellent. We had a booth overlooking the glass dome and enjoyed a classic lunch of complimentary chicken consomme, chicken salad with fruits and lettuces, and their extraordinary popovers with strawberry butter. We split a lovely meyer lemon cheesecake for dessert. We had a very handsome and attentive waiter who made the experience even more special. Highly recommend enjoying a quiet and lovely lunch here as an escape from the hustle and bustle of Union Square!

View of Union Square (Holiday at City of Paris)

By Dukemeister2013 |

With the location site formerly known as the City of Paris, NM has a fabulous restaurant, overlooking Union Square. The beautiful glass rotunda reminds me of Brasserie Bofinger in Paris. The Rotunda is a great place for tea, brunch, or a lite meal. Over the years, many of the menu's favorites have instilled me to return for any occasion. Impressive champagne and sparkling wine list; love the lobster bisque and warm seafood salad; and could have each of the desserts in one sitting. It's a hidden gem to getting away from work, shopping, sightseeing . . . and everything else! Definitely a one-of-a-kind experience (without having to go to Paris)!

Just Wow

By MEG |

I had the Rotunda down on a list of places to go to while In San Fran. Never did it dawn on me to make a reservation (don’t ask me why) I felt awful that they told us we could wait for a seat at the bar if we wanted to dine in. I immediately felt awful that me and my friend weren’t going to experience this restaurant like I had envisioned. There were many there without a reservation it seemed like because people were kind of being rude standing around & literally right next to the people in chairs at the bar for the slightest of movement so they can take their chair (many people literally cut in front of us doing that). One of the girls sitting customers finally came over, don’t know if she noticed us being polite and just waiting that she gave us a table In the best table in the restaurant in my opinion. The Rotunda is so Beautiful (just wow) our waiter was an older man who was just such an angel (I’m going to get better at getting names, because I feel service can also make your experience that much more amazing) which In our case it did. Food and drinks were delicious. 10 out of 10 in everything a tourist would hope to experience.

Just a great apartment to eat.

By Anna G |

The only problem is getting an advance reservation but, otherwise, the restaurant is beautiful, especially during the holiday season with the huge holiday tree up. The food is delicious and the bonus is that the waiter will advise what is and what may not be great to order on a specific day. They also serve afternoon tea with scones, finger sandwiches and cakes, which is wonderful and beautifully presented. Service is very good. Prices are high but one is not dining at Chessecake Factory.

Christmas lunch

By 391oliviac |

This place never fails. We have been going to The Rotunda for our Christmas lunch get together for over 30 years. The service is great and the food is excellent. Great popovers!!

Good quality food, nothing fancy though, about half of the tables not have good view

By anthonyklcheung |

Great atmosphere, very nice doom decor, View is great, however, about half of the tables would not have good view or even a view. If you want the view, you probably have to book ahead. Food has good quality, ingredients are fresh, seafood were done just right, not over or under cooked, however, no fancy dish is available in the menu. Price is at the high side. I would consider a worth while experience. We ordered Lobster Bisque - soup base was great, full of lobster flavor, cream is not overpowering, lobster meat was tender, meat from from body, not from the claws, lemon oil and chive gave the complexity to the taste, a great complement Crab & Shrimp Louie - very fresh crab meat, Shrimp is big, more closer to prawn, they probably should butterfly the shrimp to make the cooking more even across all meat, they still did it ok, the center was tender, however the surface was slightly over, avacado was just ripped and creamy, cherry tomato was sweat, great dish

Crushed

By MBS1965 |

I have dined at this establishment for years. I do not live in San Francisco. When I recently had a trip there I made sure to secure a lunch reservation. My time was 1100(opening). The popover with strawberry butter was great, as usual. I decided to try the strawberry lemonade. The taste was great. The price was high for 1 glass of approximately 10 ounces of liquid. I ordered the beef short rib papperdelle entreé. I wish I had taken a picture of it... not visually appealing would be an understatement. I decided that it might taste better than it looked. I was very wrong, it was terrible. The pasta was dry. The beef was shredded and dry. All around disappointing. I left most of it in the dish. I will give this place one more try before I decide whether or not I would ever return.

A classic with a view

By _Daphne1734 |

I stumbled across online reviews during my recent visit to SF and decided to try this. I’m so glad I visited. The food is superb and the ire is worth the visit. I had the crab salad and the truffle fries. And the view of Union Square at my feet. Afterwards, I searched online for the recipe of these amazing fries and ended up buying the Neiman Marcus cookbook. 😂 let’s say this was worthwhile. I’ll be back on my next visit to SF.

Absolutely not to be missed

By retiredtravelwriter |

There are a number of restaurants around the world which, to me, are not just places to eat but serendipity-filled tourist attractions, and the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus in San Francisco is one of these. If it were better known to the general public, there would be a line stretching for blocks to get in, because the food is excellent, the price is right and the ambience is fabulous. Booking is absolutely essential for lunch – if you don't book your chances are not great, but it's well worth doing. You may have to wait a few minutes to get a table, but once there, you will find the service outstanding. They always start with a complimentary cup of their amazing chicken consommé, and their traditional Neiman Marcus "pop over", which is what the English serve with roast beef and call "Yorkshire pudding". It's a Neiman Marcus touch that is served at all their restaurants, and is delicious. Go nicely dressed, because this is where San Francisco's society ladies go to meet for lunch, and when you have dined there you will know why. The food is absolutely delicious and fresh, the dishes are mainly low-calorie and beautifully presented, and the prices are surprisingly reasonable. I never miss the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus when visiting San Fancisco, and would certainly recommend it!

Excellent food choices

By margaretbD1402VR |

I had lunch at the Rotunda and was pleasantly surprised by the food. Many restaurants give you very small portions. I had the poached salmon salad. It had sunflower seeds and mustard seeds along with the salmon, lettuce and potatoes. It had a very light olive oil salad dressing. I found it delicious. Dessert was a combination of panna cotata with mango caviar. This was an unknown dessert for me. I found the combination of flavors to be incredible. Yes it is expensive but the choices are very unusual. I would go again.

Perfect setting for a lunch

By IamMariaNor |

We stumbled in here by accident (or luck). :) We were hungry and didn't want to eat at the touristy places around Union Square, so we took a chance and went up to the top floor of Neiman Marcus. And wow, much better! We arrived at lunch time so all tables were fully booked. We were offered a table with comfy chairs close to the bar. No complaints for us! We had margaritas as a start which were amazing! Then today's lunch which was crab and chicken. Good wine to that.

Round Dining Room, Square Service

By Matty Easton |

You come here for the spectator rounded atrium room, and you stay for the truffle fries. These are the ground rules of the Rotunda at Neiman Marcus. Reservations are a MUST here, and it’s a bit tricky to get to (there’s a social side elevator to ride that takes you to the 4th floor). Staff is old-school while tablecloth, very accommodating but kinda stiff. I guess cold is classe at this restaurant. The food’s… pretty good, albeit steep for what you get. Truffle fries are the best part, and the lobster club and burger are alright (note that they’re the cheaper end of the menu). I’d bring someone here if they enjoy department shopping and have a mild palate.

Missed the boat

By Mike K |

Food was delicious, waitress service good, prices very high and bus staff needed training. They wanted to grab our plates even before we had completely finished. Swept away my fries with some remaining. Very odd in a restaurant that was half full. And we opened the restaurant at 11am and our waitress was replaced for her break at 11:45. Crazy system. Food was very good though. And the staff at the desk was loud and no thanks when we paid and were leaving. Not good vibe

Union Square Favorite

By suzanneeats |

This is my favorite place around Union Square for a special occasion lunch. The food is excellent and the stained glass ceiling is a beautiful reminder of the last century when leisurely lunches were the norm. I order the lobster here; the lobster bisque or the lobster club sandwich. You will need a reservation. Lunch prices will seem very fair after you've gone up through four floors of Neiman Marcus merchandise.

Bugs in lettuce

By PJ6979 |

When visiting the city we always make it a tradition to have lunch at the Rotunda. In years past we enjoyed the view from our window seat and the food was very good. However, a true disappointment when we were seated at an extremely small table for two by the window. When I requested to be moved I was told we could not seat at a table of four, but we could be moved to the back of the room in a booth. My husband had to sit with his back to the window and was barely able to pull his chair out. Talk about being crammed in a very small space. The most uncomfortable we have been to any restaurant in the city. My husband and I both ordered the Burger. When served we both noticed we had fruit flies in our lettuce. I immediately called our server Megan and showed her these insects. She offered to take the meals and have them replaced, but did say that the lettuce was organic. So…..does that not mean it still can’t be washed before served? Needless to say both my husband and I lost our appetite . We received our bill and much to our surprise we were not given a credit for either meal, but instead was given a cookie box of three cookies at a cost of $11.00 as a token for our inconvenience. Never had we been so disappointed and would have expected a manger to at least approach us and apologize. BTW don’t bother to ask for window seat. All you will see is construction on a new subway at the intersection below that will not be completed for another two years.

Great birthday!

the Rotunda is a very beautiful place! I saw this place on envibe and went there to celebrate my birthday. The food was very tasty, and at the end of dinner I got little birthday dessert. It was SO cute!

Eloquently Fantastic

Beautiful ambiance. Celebrated my birthday Tea party for six. Tasty teas, delicious deserts, fabulous pop overs, yummy finger sandwiches. Fancy and fun. Good service. Made reservations. We were seated before our whole party arrived. I will be back to try the regular menu food.

We had a nice table and the

By Cathy D |

We had a nice table and the restaurant has great view of Union Square. The water guy was on top of it. Food was pricey and just ok. I had the chicken. My friends had the hamburger. Our waiter was less than excited that 5 women were at his table ordering only water for drinks. I tried to get the spiced tea but he said they didn’t have any. He literally rolled his eyes every time he came to our table. Made a snide comment. I have been in the service industry and not only tip well but encourage everyone with me to do as well. This time it was all I could do to leave 15%. The hamburger ladies paid him in cash $40 for a $30 burger and he got pissy when they asked for their change. Yes I’d give someone a $10 tip on $30 but not with such a nasty attitude. Heck I left $20 on $50 tab at dinner afterwards. Maybe he will learn not to prejudge people. There are too many nice restaurants in San Francisco to have him treat us that way. Not going back!

Excellent as Always

By darthvayd |

A New Year's tradition for my wife and I to eat at the Rotunda in San Francisco each New Year's Day. Their service is exceptional. We love seeing the HUGE Christmas poking up through multiple floors. But best of all, their popovers with strawberry butter are soooo delicious! We also love their Lobster Club sandwich. :-)

Don’t miss this place to remember

Luxurious place with a wonderful vibe! Service was amazing and the menu includes many different dishes, all worth trying.

Pricey but great view of Union Square and nice place to escape crowds!

By Frau65 |

Stopped for lunch after browsing around in Union Square on my first day in the city. Signage to find restaurant inside Nieman Marcus needs improvement, I got off the escalator at almost every floor until I finally found it upstairs. There was no waiting but then I arrived quite late in the day (4pm) for lunch. They served a small cup of complimentary broth with bread and butter; both were lovely. I had roasted cauliflower soup and a cobb salad; for desert I had a cappuccino and apricot panna cotta. I paid $73 for this delicious lunch (tip included), so while this is a splurge for me, it was worth it for this once in a lifetime unique experience!

Lunch

We were shopping in union square then we stopped by at rotunda. I love this place, the food is always great. We had the ny steak and lobster club. It was so good. I had margarita and it so delicious. Try to make reservation if you wanna have a great seat .

Exquisite!

By Sarah R |

Just as you would expect, The Rotunda will far exceed your expectations. Located on the 4th floor of Neiman Marcus, The Rotunda offers an amazing view, excellent wait staff, and food that is prepared with such fresh ingredients that you can taste in each bite. We came for lunch on a Friday afternoon. There weren't any window seats available, so we sat in a booth. I don't think there is a table with a bad view in the whole restaurant. We were presented with the amazing popovers that I can't get enough of! Try not to get full on those! The quinoa pasta with fresh veggies and some kind of cheese was perfection! My daughter had a Caesar salad which she also loved. Of course, we had to get the cookies and although they weren't warm, they were excellent. My only complaint, if I had to come up with one, is that the host staff was a little on the rude side. I understand that this is a "fancy" restaurant, but I believe the service should coincide with the style of the restaurant. We will definitely be back the next time we are in San Francisco!

High tea disappointment.

By California Girl |

My 12-year old son and I were so excited to experience "high tea" at Neiman Marcus. The pictures posted on-line showed beautiful tea sandwiches and petit fours. Needless to say our tiered tray had very dry sandwiches except for the wonderful crab bite. There were no petit fours on the plate and the savory and sweets were just average. I will say the service was excellent. Our plates cleared immediately. Water cups filled promptly. I was so disappointed I forgot to take a picture! Our tea was quite good. But at $45 a person I would skip this place and have high tea elsewhere. Better yet, buy a $3 cup from your favorite place and spend the rest of your money on a nice dinner somewhere.

nice location and view average food

By Lilly S |

I went there for lunch with a friend and had the short ribs with pasta. The taste was ok. The ribs were meat without the bones and the dish had a taste of truffle oil which was ok. The problem was that while waiting for our dish they served baked bread with butter (the butter was mixed with strawberries which was good and interesting) and then I ate the pasta with the meat. It was too much carbs and I missed having some vegetable on the side. After finishing my entree I had a glass of chocolate milk which was way too sweet. The service was ok.

Bright Airy and Sophisticated

By tastebudtravelers |

I met up with an old friend and wanted a quiet beautiful relaxing place to reconnect. Mission accomplished. The Rotunda’s atrium lights a fabulous well appointed dining area. There are intimate vignettes for privacy. My friend and I had the goat cheese starter and both decided on the King Salmon on a bed of beetroot. Delightful afternoon.

Lovely

By Liza_n1 |

We stopped by this little gem during our day out shopping. Such a lovely setting and great ambience. The service was fantastic. For starters we were given a chicken soup complimentary. We ordered for the table the caviar, burrata salad and burger. Would have liked the Beetroot in the salad not as soft or replaced with tomato. Other than that all were great. Definitely recommend as a lunch time spot.

Unexpected Wonderful Lunch

By jhjr |

Wandered in here right at 11 am while my friend's wife was checking out some dresses. We immediately sat down for lunch given the beautiful dining room and the menu proved to be wonderful as well. The restaurant filled immediately so reservations are definitely recommended. Very interesting menu with lots of gluten free options and an impressive wine list. Typical Neiman Marcus crowd makes for fun people watching too.

Good thing it’s a beautiful place to make up for the food!

By Kathy K |

Beautiful atmosphere but best part of the food was the free popovers and strawberry butter. The lentil soup had great flavor but was maybe 1 cup in the bowl. The Caesar salad tasted worse than what you’d find at a fast food place...absolutely no flavor. The rotunda hamburger was average at best. Fries were average. Should be truffle fries like other high end restaurants. Wine was excellent and so was the hibiscus tea (that had lemon sorbet in it). Food really needs an overhaul. Was definitely the worse we’ve had in San Francisco.

A must-see destination for anyone in Union Square!

By jalfong |

Finally made it to the promised land that is The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus in Union Square in downtown San Francisco and boy was it well worth the wait. In fact, I suggest, no implore every Bay Area native to get to The Rotunda at least once in their lives. Take their loved ones, go with a friend, take people who happen to be tourists looking for the typical San Francisco adventure, this is the place to go thanks to the ambiance under the glass dome. While others are shopping you're busy enjoying varied fine dining like sipping on sparkling wine, choosing from ten different types of teas or even munching on a lobster sandwich, anything and everything is here. Is it overindulgent? It sure is and I wouldn't have it any other way! I was lucky enough to sample my first spot of tea under the dome with a real veteran of The Rotunda who comes here all the time with friends and family to just shoot the breeze and enjoy the people and view watching. Thankfully, my friend knew exactly what to do from getting a easy reservation on OpenTable and specifically requesting a window table, which even though it was a Sunday was an easy accomplishment because we didn't get there until 3pm and they close at 4pm on Sunday so there was plenty of seating to go around. We didn't even need to look at the full menu this time around as the first menu on our table was for the Afternoon Tea at Neiman Marcus, served from 2:30-4pm on Sundays, it features 4 of their tea sandwiches, a freshly baked scone, 4 petite sweets, fruit preserves and devonshire cream (and that was the best I have ever tasted mind you!). At 45 dollars for all of that food plus a pot of tea for one person was a real deal we then asked our server Elle if we could get a second pot of tea for each person and she said it would only be five extra dollars and we were sold with two different pots of tea and all of that food for basically 25 dollars a person! True tea dining elegance on a decent budget and I absolutely loved it! What I also loved was the complimentary popover we were served right at the top of meal along with a strawberry butter spread. It was the perfect companion to go with my pot of Jardin Bleu tea which was a blend of teas from India and China, flavored with rhubarb, wild strawberry and cornflower petals. It was the suggested tea of our server Elle and I wasn't disappointed, it was sweet strawberry heaven in a cup and saucer. Then imagine my surprise when out comes an amuse bouche of chicken consume served with a layered parmesan cheese crescent. The perfect savory treat to go with the sweet tea I was sipping on. Once the food came out on the platter and I realized it was the perfect amount to go with my tea. I particularity loved the garlic parmesan scone and the smoked salmon with a spread on a piece of white bread. Everything tasted perfect, especially the desserts like the chocolate mousse bite and the warm apple cinnamon bite, both were top notch that combined with the endless warm water refills to my tea leaves in my tea pot provided the ultimate way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon. Things of note: it was kind of cramped sitting alongside our small window table as the walkway around the entire atrium concourse was not very wide and since there's so much construction going on on Stockton Street outside that our view was slightly compromised. But I still loved everything about our day at The Rotunda. It wasn't super packed (it was January) so it wasn't teeming with people and you could clearly hear your tea drinking companion sitting across from you and take the side elevator on Geary Street and it will zoom you right up to the fourth floor without having to go through the Neiman Marcus store. The Rotunda is bright, airy and clean and the perfect way to spend a day with a friend or loved one talking and sipping for hours on end without even realizing it. The Rotunda is a true San Francisco experience that cannot be missed.

The perfect lunch spot.

By MichaelBegley |

Located on the corner of Union Square the setting is ideal if you are sight seeing or shopping. Booking is advisable although not essential, if you can get a window seat this will be the icing on the cake. We had the hot seafood salad and crab and prawn Louie. 2 of the best salads according to the waiter. They arrived smartly and looked superb. The prawns were huge and succulent, cooked to perfection. We both enjoyed our salads very much and although expensive, as a treat for us great value, although I suspect for the people around us, just the norm. They serve a little chicken veloute as an appetiser which was silky smooth and a Yorkshire Pudding instead of bread, odd but is their trademark and work very well. The food was excellent although the one thing I should mention is the service. Attentive, considerate with a little humour, and definitely 5 stars. Throughout our whole experience we were well looked after by all the staff and wanted for nothing.

Pleasant experience, excellent food and cocktails

Very nice restaurant, excellent food, tasty and interesting. Cocktails are also delicious, lovely staff, a very good experience.

You Can Never Go Wrong At the Rotunda

By 111patricia |

You can take ANYONE to the Rotunda. The food is great, the cocktails are delicious, the room is beautiful. There really is not downside. I recommend booking if you want to go for lunch and will arrive after 11:45. It gets busy!

Lunch w/a View

By Christy A |

Five star view no doubt! The Rotunda is seated inside Union Square's Neiman Marcus store. The stained glass ceiling is breathtaking and to top it off when you arrive to the rotunda there's not a bad seat in the house; all offer a great view of the Square. Service was pleasant; as expected from such a prestigious brand like NM. Bread & strawberry butter were complimentary starters. I ordered the seafood salad for lunch...very tasty & filling but I didn't think it was worth the $30 price tag. Maybe they charge for the view :)

An Elegant Gem in the City

By Gary A |

While visiting San Francisco on Spring Break, I reserved lunch with my wife and 2 teen daughters here. Great move! The venue is gorgeous and special, feeling far more like a European experience than American, and the food and drink were outstanding. I had the Dungeness Crab Melt (enjoyed every bite), and they had the delicious chicken salad. This was one of the highlights of our trip. Highly recommended.

Very Nice Lunch

By cjlulu |

It has been along time since I have eaten at the Rotunda. It was my husbands first time. The hostess greeted us, and to my very happy surprise we were escorted to a seat by the window. I had forgotten about the chicken broth and popovers. Both were very good. My husband ordered the Prime Rib Sandwich, ($30.00), and I had the Salmon with vegetables,(31.00). My Salmon in the mild leek sauce was wonderful! My husband said his Prime Rib was very tender and he enjoyed his French fries. We opted not to have dessert, and had a Vittoria Mocha, ($5.50), Tea, ($5.00) and the famous Neiman Marcus cookie,($4.00). Our waitress Jivka was very professional friendly, and recommended the cookie to go with our coffee and tea. I would recommend making reservations, as it is a very popular eatery. I made reservations in September for December. If you decide to eat at the Rotunda, I hope you enjoy it.

Shoppers lunch paradise

By RoteFuchs |

The Rotunda is beautiful and you are sitting right in the centre of SF, in the middle of the best department store, overlooking Union Square. The food is modern and delicious, the service is efficient and helpful and the wine good. When you are in the Rotunda you can see that you are in the better end of SF and for a shopper this is as close to paradise as you can get for lunch.

Delightful menu, excellently cooked and presented!

By Saibal S |

They welcome you with a chicken broth served in this very cute cup with a biscuit and then comes the hot popovers with strawberry butter. Every disk I have ordered here is cooked very well. To finish the meal, I love their cheesecake.

Revelry Under The Rotunda

By briankulaf |

I planned a lunch for my wife's birthday and Easter lunch with my mom on the same day last week. The stained glass ceiling and the view of Union Square is unbeatable. Living in San Francisco, this my go-tonspot for special occasions. The always start you off with an amuse bouche of chicken consommé followed by the biggest, fluffiest popovers with strawberry butter. And you can have as many as you can eat! Our server intimated a story where a guest ate 7 in a row and took several to go AFTER he his entree! My lobster club sandwich on brioche bread and fries were excellent. My wife followed suit. Mom enjoyed here quinoa salad with shrimp but was obcessed with her second popover! Pleasant environment, great service, good company equals a great afternoon.

Missed on a few things

By KCPDX |

My wife brought me having been in January. First off, the menu when opened was covered in food--not a good start. We got the same salad she had before, signature salad (she had a picture of her earlier dish) and it was about two thirds the size of this dish. It was very good, but not consistent in presentation. Not bad, but not what I expected for how the restaurant was described. Better than average, but not at the price point.

Delightful Afternoon Tea

By Claudia G |

My husband and I went to San Francisco for our first anniversary. On the day of our anniversary, we decided to take the cable car to afternoon tea at the Rotunda. The setting is beautiful. The service was very good as was the food. I found the price on par with other afternoon teas that I have been to. The popover with strawberry butter was the star of the show for us. It was absolutely decadent, and the strawberry butter was perfect. The tea includes both a sweet and savory scone, a variety of tea sandwiches, and desserts that were both delicious and fresh. There was so much food, we wound up taking some back to our hotel and had it for breakfast in bed the next morning! If we return to San Francisco, we would definitely go back to tea at the Rotonda.

Delicious food and wonderful service!

By oliviafortheocean |

I met some friends here and we had two babies in our party. Our friends arrived first (about 20 minutes before us) to get in line for a table and were told it would be an hour and a half wait. This was a Saturday at around noon. I'm not sure what happened but when we arrived with the babies we went to the bathroom to change them quickly and when we got out we were already seated. Maybe it was the babies? Not sure but I was very thankful we didn't have to wait the full time! Before we ordered the waiter brought out a small espresso-sized cup of chicken broth with a small biscuit and then popovers with a strawberry butter. Both were delicious. I ordered the Crab Melt and my husband ordered the Lobster Club. They were both very tasty. The service was wonderful! They were great with the babies and very attentive. Overall, I would definitely eat here again.

Elegant delicious lunch

By Julie F |

This was a great spot to relax and enjoy a good lunch on a hot, crowded day in the city. We were on a bus tour. Service was excellent! We loved the pretty space. The warm popovers, sandwich and salads were just what we needed to recharge. Sadly, we didn't have room for the pretty desserts. There is a tea service and wine served. It was expensive for lunch, but enjoyable and well done. Only serves lunch.

A great place for lunch in SF

By aphillips61 |

We visited the Rotunda to have tea one day during our visit to SF and make time before our dinner at Son's and Daughter's. The place is still perfect with great views of Union Square and the best Negroni in town (as has been the case for the last 20 years and believe me I have tried every Negroni in SF). Tea was just perfect and our server provided the best and kindest service we had in our trip, a testament to the quality and attention NM provides

Not As Good As the Other NM Restaurants

By SonyaM |

I go to two of the Dallas NM restaurants quite often because of their good food and service. My visit to the Rotanda was very disappointing. We asked multiple times for our puff pastry but the guy kept coming back with more water to fill out glasses. It finally came after our food was brought to our table. It was to the point of burned and super crispy like a baguette.Tables seated after us got theirs promptly like it’s done in Dallas. We ordered the NM Chicken Salad Which was very different and disappointing compared to the ones at other locations. This was doused with mayonnaise and a lot of celery, unlike the ones I’ve had at other locations which mostly have chunks of chicken with very light mayonnaise. They are capitalizing on their location and not the food.

Perfect for a bubbles pitstop

By Davina H |

Popped in with my husband on my birthday for glass of champagne. Very easily seated; good wine/drinks list. Ruinart champagne is my favourite. Lovely staff. Lobster spring rolls were a perfect light snack to share. Delicious. The bread selection is actually a Yorkshire pudding. Odd but ok. Even odder they serve it with strawberry flavoured butter! Just odd in my opinion but waiter said it was their signature that people rave about so maybe it was just us that didn't get it!

Nice location … just OK food

By RB242 |

Although the first time here, the venue at these Neiman Marcus stores is well known to us. A beautiful location with great views and very nice and competent staff. Only if the food would be better. The chicken was not of best quality, not well cooked and the polenta was rather tasteless and the spinach was horribly over cooked and tasted bitter. Not sure why there was so much leek or onions as well. Left the food half finished. The Cobb salad was nice … but also nothing overly special. So … average at best.

great architectural spot book ahead

By Clint V |

this is always a nice place to go for lunch during an expensive shopping day. Plan ahead and book a table by the window. We did not make a reservation and did not mind the 30 minute wait but were punished with a table by the kitchen. When I stated we would wait longer for a better table we were informed that the good tables were for those that made a reservation.

Satisfying Salmon Fillet!

By RenaissanceGirl2015 |

The Rotunda at Neiman Marcus continues to surprise and delight. When I visit San Francisco now, I try to make time to enjoy lunch here. The restaurant has improved dramatically from the years when I lived in the city. The food is now on par with many of San Francisco's fine dining establishments, and the restaurant's overall cleanliness has made outstanding improvement. The salmon fillet was fresh, a nice size, and well prepared. The farro salad with asparagus and corn was a tasty accompaniment. Neiman's signature popovers with strawberry butter were the best they have ever been! Service was also excellent - available, but not intrusive. Window seats offering a view of Union Square are the best!

Sublime brunch from start to finish

By Linda B |

How is it I have never been here before?!? Not only is this a stunning room, but the food supports the ambiance. The never-ending enormous popovers with strawberry butter were spectacular, followed by the BEST crab/shrimp Louie I have EVER eaten. There was so much seafood and it was not drenched in sauce. Perfect! And if that wasn't enough, our delightful waiter, Nick, made this a most perfect brunch in celebration of a very special 60th birthday. He added to our full enjoyment of the experience with his humor and charm. It could only have been better had he pulled up a chair and joined us.

Always my lunch place on my shopping day

By TangueraSF |

If I need to go to Union Squares to pick up a few things, I’ll just book this place for lunch. It was a treat for myself during a tiring and stressful shopping day :) . Good choices with exciting specials on some days. But always ended up just ordering the lobster club. However it seems its quality, presentation or just the chips accompanied become less impressive recently. Still remember the beautiful and more delicated lobster club a few years ago. However it’s still a lovely and decent place for lunch in union square without having to compete with busy tourists (including myself) :) Don’t forget to pick up the famous and best chocolate chip cookies downstairs.

Go for tea

By manawave |

I went for lunch, but I hit all the NM restaurants. Love them all. Chicken picatta was awesome. Warm seafood salad was ok, they drowned it in dressing. Definitely ask them to go easy on the dressing. There were 3 grilled shrimp and 3 scallops. A bit pricey for what it is. The lobster egg rolls are good but presentation is unbalanced. Also, it's ok to share if you are not super hungry. Try to get a seat on the rotunda. The booths are best, so request it. The rotunda is from 1850 and saved by the historical society. I think NM wanted to tear it down, can you believe it. The place is absolutely beautiful. Happy they preserved a bit of history.

High end place for lunch while shopping

Is you are looking for a good place for lunch while shopping around union square the this is it The staff is friendly and we had a brioche and farce before a very good salad If you wanted a glass of wine or a cocktail that is here as well It's not cheap though at $60 for 2 and no drinks

Awesome afternoon tea

By David G |

My wife and I like to try afternoon tea in many of the cities that we travel to. This one was certainly near the top. The unique part of this tea is that you get to start with the signature pop-overs. That was an unexpected treat, and we both really enjoyed it. After that, the service included your standard tea fare (tea sandwiches, scones, pastries), but each was done very well. The service also made our visit very enjoyable. We would definitely return!

A bit over the top as far as I am concerned.

By James B |

Service was okay for a fine dining atmosphere. One always is impressed by the location and the furniture and surroundings but that doesn't make the meal taste any better. To me, it just raises my expectations. So decided to order the Crab Melt and the French Dip. We had them split each item on the dish in the kitchen to avoid any potentially embarrassing moments at the table using just a simple knife and fork. Items arrived hot and served with a smile, but that's kind of where it ended. I don't know who was in the kitchen but I prefer more crab on my sandwich than I do melted cheese. It almost seemed like a sidewalk Mexican cafe in Cancun than a dish from Nieman. French dip? Well, too salty was the sauce, and grizzly was the meat. Ordinarily, if we weren't in a rush, both sandwiches would have been returned and salads ordered. Neither one of us liked either plate. Jivika noticed we had not eaten even half of each of the two dishes on either plate and asked if it was to our "liking". We simply smiled and offered nothing in return. Did not want a free meal, and did not have time to order again. Paid the $78.13 and left. Doubt we will ever visit again. Or even be treated by someone at their expense.

Very good food and service

By A and Z |

Came here for lunch. Very nice atmosphere and enjoyable. When you are seated they bring out a chicken consume for you to drink. Then each person in your group receives a big piece of bread with strawberry butter to enjoy. You can have high tea here or order a la carte off the menu. We did both. I ordered the tea and my husband and son shared a huge burger. According to them, it was the best burger in the whole world! The tea service was good and you can order any kind of sandwiches with it. They are good at substituting if you have dietary concerns. For my sandwiches I asked for them to be all chicken salad sandwiches. It came open faced but extremely small! I noticed that when other sandwiches were coming out, they were closed and bigger portions. The server explained to me that ONLY the chicken salad sandwiches come out open faced! The tea I drank was very good and the desserts were good too. The scone came with Devonshire cream, strawberry jam, and lemon curd. I was disappointed with the sandwiches. That part could have been better.

Afternoon Tea

By mandy |

The Rotunda offers a gorgeous backdrop to enjoy afternoon tea. We were seated by the window so had an amazing view of Union Square. We ordered the signature tea. A little pricey for tea at $50 per person. I felt like the tea selection was limited and the food was just so-so. Food was served on a three tier stand. Five savory sandwiches, five petit fours, scones (with lemon curd and clotted cream), popover with strawberry butter, and chicken consommé. While the presentation was lovely, I was expecting the food to taste better based on the price we paid. I think the popover with strawberry butter was the highlight of the meal.

Surroundings great, food ok, service lousy

By Andrewjohnbond |

It looks beautiful What a setting. A terraced circle around the corner atrium of the store with a garish glass ceiling. So far so good. And then we wait. And we wait. I realise our "server" is busily having a chat with a couple of ladies that lunch. And he talks And we wait. And we wait. And eventually the maitre d goes past and asks if we are fine. Yes. But we appear to not have a server. Although the guy filling the water has managed to poor that with all of the finesse of an elephant. And then he plonked down a sort of cone-effect bread roll with a bowl of congealed strawberry yoghurt. And we wait. And along he comes. He has a haircut. But not much else. We order. Well, we try. It's Italian week - so we go with the flow and order an Aperol Spritz. But alas, "we have run out of Aperol", As my companion points out, there really isn't a good reason to run out of Aperol. Some of the food is quite good. But amazingly, and in contradiction to what has happened so far, our entre arrives in the middle of us eating our appetizers. But never mind, they are going to plonk it down anyway. Tuna is nice. Warm seafood salad is nice. The rest if so so. At one point, our server tells us that we are "his favourite customers" As my companion points out, it's not reciprocated.

Mediocre service and food at great expense

By elegant moose |

Three of us went for lunch to the Rotunda today and nine of us was overly impressed with the food. The Cobb salad was mainly lettuce with some additions around the side, the lattes were luke warm the crab melts were ok but not great and everything was very expensive. I would not recommend it.

Lovely lunch setting, good food, SFO prices

By AzFoodie |

If you don't mind paying $78 for two simple lunches including tip and no liquor, you might enjoy the exclusivity of the stained glass rotunda. No question, the quality of the food is top notch. But if you don't work for Google, Amazon, or Facebook and have the seven figure salary to match, you might enjoy another Union Square lunch option just as much for a half to three quarters of the price.

Excellent high tea

By Sheena M |

My best friend and I had a wonderful high tea here. The restaurant decor is exquisite and the wait staff make wonderful recommendations about the tea selections (the bleu Hardin was my favorite, especially with a touch of milk and sugar added). The scones, sandwiches and desserts were lovely. We upgraded to the royal service that included a glass of rose brut, and it was an indulgent meal that created some fun memories! The consommé that started off the meal was incredibly complex and flavorful, and the popover was fun.

Pure elegance

By rachaele30 |

They start you off with a tiny cup of consomme and a popover with strawberry butter. Yum! The ceiling is beautiful and you feel like you've stepped back in time to an age of elegance and glamour. Oh yeah, and the food is good too.

Insulted by hostess

By Ibrahim F |

It saddens me to write the following feedback as a direct result of the treatment and attitude we faced today by the hostess at the restaurant that my family and I adored for over a decade. We make it a point to dine at Rotunda every time we are in town from Canada. The hostess made us us feel unwanted and did not even attempt to be nice about the way she communicated with us. She was extremely uncooperative and uninterested in our visit. We understand restaurants could be busy and we would usually ensure to have a booking in advance. But on this occasion, we had an unplanned stop over on our way to Carmel and thought to give it a try and walk in or even wait for a walk in table at the bar. We could've been turned down in a more positive manner rather than the almost aggressive attitude we experienced. It is staff like this that drive loyal customers away and we truly hope the management makes the effort in addressing this attitude problem as it is a sign of complacency from one of the best restaurants in town. Believe me that it is with a heavy heart that I wrote this on what is supposed to be a happy end to the year. My advise to all visitors to the Rotunda is to make reservations in advance and avoid the humiliation we faced by the person who is supposed to be the front of the restaurant. Wishing you all a Happy New Year

Maybe we had high expectations but upon check in we were extremely disappointed. I felt like a 2nd class citizen as they seated us basically in the back. We would of left if it wasn’t for the entertaining waiter we had. There were many open tables in the view seats available and still empty upon us leaving. Just a disappointing overall experience. Food was okay. We love Neiman Marcus, so it was a double downer. The best thing I the electronic area on the main floor with the newest coolest unique items. So the moral of the story is ask for view seat close to the window!

BirThday Tea was great!

By Kim A |

The setting is gorgeous! The tea was beautiful, yummy scones and tea sandwiches-my favorite was the turkey and Brie, my least favorite the cucumber and radish. The dessert chocolate cupcake was delicious and the lemon squares. The birthday cupcake sadly was very dry...as were the raspberry madeleines. The service lacked a little for such a posh place. There was old food on the floor by our table I had to ask to be picked up and a little slow on checking up on tea refills, etc. however it was still a wonderful experience with friends and a beautiful setting. Oh, and popovers are Devine!!

Delectable menu at such a chaming place in the city.

Very lucky to have DAHN attending to us for late lunch, love the service from all the staff. Food was delish! We aimed for afternoon tea but the lunch menu was too good to resist - so tea time next time ; )
