Very cool eclectic spot with great drinks and a really good happy hour. Must go with friend or a date night you wont be disappointed. Has an awesome history you should check it out.

Great place for cocktails and people-watching.

A most beautiful setting where the drink menu is longer than the food menu. and if you can't decide, they will decide for you! lovely cocktails, fresh and quick. food can be small plates (great brussel sprouts and meatballs) or entrees (burger is a bargain.) Cheese plate allows you to choose the cheeses and meats as you see fit- love the figs that come with. several desserts but we went with the bacon dates, because we can! excellent starter or finisher. very romantic place. great for all the senses. worth the trip past the chaos of SE Hawthorne to get to this non-hotel. It isn't a hotel in case you were wondering!

Great date spot and wonderful drinks. Decor and vibe.

Met a friend for a late friday night dinner and drinks. I have a ton of food allergies and had the beet burger on the vegan, gluten free bun-SO GOOD. The drink menu is outstanding, and they make a lot of their own spirits on-site. Although they were really crowded the food came out fast and they waitress was attentive. The prices were average. The only downside is that it is dark and extremely loud. But I would definitely go back.

This is a wonderful restaurant that is a hidden gem on upper Hawthorne in SE PDX. Our group of 9 ordered most of the appetizers and we weren't disappointed. The bacon wrapped dates and artichoke dip are the best you'll ever have-I promise! The cheese plate includes a choice of three cheeses, crusty bread and a nice selection of fruit, nuts, olives and savory pickles. The flatiron steak with pomegranate reduction included marble sized potatoes made it hard to decide which was the star. The drink menu is extensive and whimsically named. One of their signature drinks is a marionberry margharita that was a visual as well as taste delight. The drink special was a B-sizzle which was very popular with our group. Our total bill for drinks and food was $162.50 including tip. The parking is on street but we had no problem finding a place within a block. I plan on a return visit very soon.

My boyfriend took me here for my birthday several years back, but we go every so often when we want a special night out. The food is awesome as is the atmosphere. Service is also great!

Always freaking crowded!

My husband and I are low-key, casual people who usually don't frequent dining establishments with a focus on fancy cocktails. However, we needed to eat very late on two occasions during our time in Portland, and the Sapphire Hotel was right across the street from our accommodations. The front doors were wide open and the menu looked great, so in we went. We were so pleased about how friendly the staff were and how good the food was that we returned a second time. Between the two visits we sampled most of their menu -- a burger with truffled yam chips, butternut squash enchiladas, mussels, artichoke dip, salmon cakes, the delicious house salad, marionberry lemonade, apricot lemonade, and even -- yes -- a cocktail! Perfect.

Well crafted cocktails, a good beer and wine selection and a very diverse Manu of small plates makes this spot a favorite for happy hour or late night rendezvous!

Stopped in here for late night drinks and a bite to eat. Both the drinks and the pizza were delicious. The setting reminded me of an old brothel, and I suppose that was intentional, since that is the history of the place. A nice place to come for drinks.

I've been coming here for years and it continues to be my favorite date spot time after time. Such a romantic atmosphere with an amazing cocktail menu and delicious appetizers and entrees. My favorite are the ahi tuna and then the mushroom risotto with scallops. I also highly recommend the butternut squash enchiladas! Yum!

I hadn’t been to the Sapphire in well, and was again toy smitten with the place. Awesome server, lovely sensual ambiance, great menu. I asked the server her opinion about a few options and I’m so glad I went with the salmon cakes- they were light and mostly salmon, not breading- in fact no wheat, which made them even better, the spicing was perfect. I liked them so much I thought about another order. Now I’m just dreaming about them for the next visit.

As the sun set early last night, I met a friend for a pre-dinner drink and some appetizers. When we arrived at 4:00 p.m. (when they opened), we had our pick of tables, which was nice. By the time we left two hours later, the place was much more full ... with less options. This place isn't cheap, even making use of the happy hour menu for food. Having said that, the food they served us was ample, and the server offered additional bread without us even asking. Nice. I tend to go to this bar once or twice every year for as long as I remember, and it has never disappointed. Solid service and drinks/food. And it was a nice way to combat the sub-freezing wind and cold outside. If you haven't tried it, check it out!

drinks very good/food so-so

This place has the best cocktails, and the best cocktail menu, in town. I like ordering their amazing drinks off the menu, but sometimes I just get a gin martini because it's the best in Portland. The food is really good here too. I'd say the five stars I'm giving this place are for the drinks and atmosphere, and the food is four stars. The food is good, but a little more hit and miss than the beverages. There are gluten-free and vegetarian options, and I love the salmon corn cakes. Happy hour is great here, with lots of food and drink specials. All around one of my favorite Portland places.

A dim, romantic setting with a large, impressive selection of alcohol. The food menu is limited but tasty. Our service was not great. Cool atmosphere. .

We went there with a Family Pack - 6 of us - and had a great time. The menu is perfect for ordering a whole bunch of things and sharing. We had mussels and clams, artichoke and arrugula dip, and the scallops, also the butternut squach enchiladas and a burger, and a couple of other things I can't recall - everything was REALLY good - the one thing we didn't care for was the puree with the scallops but you know that is a matter of personal preference. The food was well prepared - everything cooked to perfection. Tender clams and mussels, juicy burger, hot creamy dip and also enchiladas. The table had some cocktails, some beer, and some wine and everything was very good. The service was just a teeny bit scattered but they were very busy and we were demanding, so it is understandeable. Recommended for sure ...

Very cute old funky place. I enjoyed our drinks , nice selection and reminds me of a speak easy . It's dark , romantic and feels like you're surrounded by history . Service was great Food was just mediocre though the atmosphere makes up for the lack of taste. It's not horrible food and I would go back . It was relaxing and I just liked the feel of this place . Plus the area is just cool .

Honestly the best drinks in P-town. Absolutely killer service and the food was spot on. If you are looking for something new or just different this is a must! The happy hour menu and prices make for a great evening or trying various drinks as well as many different menu items.

This lounge is so sexy. I would love to go here more often and enjoy some romantic time. They have lovely food and lighting. Be sure to even check out the bathroom-- really pretty too.

Yummy, yummy! And great ambiance!

Tasty happy hour!

Some unique and unusual drinks on the menu. Good food. Great cheese platter. Fabulous bread pudding. Good service. Bathrooms are funky fun, resemble a 1920's optium den. Great place to go with friends. Enjoy!

What?! BRUNCH!!!! I have been going to The Sapphire for years. It is my favorite drink spot in Portland. So romantic, awesome menu and the service is always impeccable. I am thrilled that they are also my new favorite brunch spot! It is so good! Thanks, Sapphire! xo

We met some LA friends here for drinks & dinner. The atmosphere is vintage Portland with a seedy history. The tables are small, even tiny, but we were able to make it work. The drink menu was impressive & the actual drinks were all tasty although the server forgot one of our friends drink & was difficult to flag down to remind her of the order. The food was tasty and beautifully presented. Parking was a bit of a struggle as it is in a popular area.

Super excellent cocktails!

Still one if the best date spots in Portland. We keep coming back for the happy hour. The food is great and you can't beat the ambiance. Please don't change a thing!

I always have the panzanela salad when I go to Saphire Hotel and I crave it at least once every month. There is no other restaurant I had been to that achieve the level of perfection they have have obtained with this wonderful salad. The greens are room temperature (no right out of the fridge) as they should for a salad and always fresh. The combination of greens have the perfect balance of flavors: baby lettuce, baby spinach, tiny sweet tomatoes, olives, basil, chucks of carefully cut bread, mozzarella cheese with olive oil and an amazing caramello di balsamico vinager. Beside this wonderful salad they have a somehow diverse menu but I can't comment on any other dish. The place offers several cocktails, my favorite is "Going Up" highly recommended if you are no into the sweet drinks. The ambiance is old town hotel, cozy and appealing and the staff is super nice. They also have an amazing Safe Streets Fund that will take you home , at no cost for you, if you feel tipsy and can't drive! Hands down one of my favorites restaurants to eat and have a nice cocktail in Portland. A must go if you are visiting town.

Just got into town to visit family and went to this place, not far from where they lived. The atmosphere/ambience is hard to describe: distinctive but relaxing, dark decor and tones, rather intimate; 'bohemian', one might say. Personable unobtrusive service Although I wasn't there for that purpose, it probably could be considered a romantic setting where one could take a date. Good food. Good evening.

I love the Sapphire Hotel (which isn't a hotel at all, just a restaurant and bar) for it's sexy atmosphere, tasty food and delicious craft cocktails. There is usually a cocktail special for $5 which is always a seasonal flavor infused concoction that never disappoints. There are always four rotating taps, a selection of bottled beers, a full wine list and a small but thoughtful food menu. I have enjoyed the bacon wrapped dates, the Indian spiced chicken skewers and the panzanella salad thoroughly! The artichoke dip is very decadent and the cheese and charcuterie plates will please any Portland foodie. Fridays at 4 o'clock when they open there are folks waiting to start their happy hour, and by 6 it's always a full house.

I stopped in here with a friend for a drink and a bite to eat at the end of our walk. Service was prompt, and friendly. It was happy hour, and the daily "punch" was a blended tequila drink that had plenty of punch. I very much enjoyed the kale and arugula salad, and my friend's salmon cakes were good, too. The chicken liver mousse was a bit dry. Well worth a return trip.

Their cocktails are amazing and so are dates wrapped in bacon, so delish! The place has a different vibe altogether . Makes you feel you're in Portland.

We were visiting our daughters who took us here. Loved their burgers & fires; spouse loved her steak salad. very comfortable place to eat & with very good service.

Sapphire Hotel is known for their great drinks but we love them for their burgers. It's a great date spot, although we were there with a newborn and no one gave us judging looks.
Sensational Caesar !
Roasted Beet Burger and a Caesar salad both fulfilled their potential, and then some. The Caesar was especially good. The Molten Chocolate Lava Sundae was also a treat. The ambiance was warm and engaging. Next time, we'll wander through the drinks list. Looks like a lot of potential there, as well!
