Completely unexpected little gem

By jenandcody |

We were on our way to the TLA to see a show. We looked for a place nearby to the venue and stumbled into this restaurant as we were walking from the garage. We thought it was going to be a pub but we were completely wrong when we walked inside. When they handed us a cheese menu I was sold. Our waiter was fabulous and helped us to decide on cheeses that we would enjoy based upon our tastes..which was spot on. We had homemade popcorn to munch on and the cheese board presentation was adorable with homemade apple butter that was delish. We opted for the gnocchi with chanterelles and basil purée, crab cake and crawfish Mac and cheese. The gnocchi were some of the best I’ve ever had. The only regrets I have are 1) being too stuffed to be able to try dessert and 2) not being able to take home leftovers due to heading directly to a show. Absolutely need to go back here again. Worth it.

cozy

We went for Easter Brunch and the food was good, they had waffles, shrimp, meat and other things. They had little sample size for dessert.

Delicious!!!

By Nicole D |

The food here was absolutely delicious!! The waiter was wonderful and made sure we had everything we needed! I did not know it was restaurant week when I went but it was a lovely surprise! I got the smoked wings, Mac & cheese, flank stake and an amazing dessert (forget what it was called) which was similar to small donuts. Everything exceeded my expectations! The only reason I gave 4 stars and not 5 is because when we entered the restaurant we were told the only table available had a reservation so we only could be there for an hour and a half. We did decide to stay but I felt the hostest could have been more welcoming. I felt that we were being rushed because they had a reservation. Side note - we were there past our allotted time and no party of six waiting for a table came in.

Not to Be Overlooked

By Betsy W |

This restaurant has a very large menu of whiskeys and cocktails. The food is interesting and well prepared and plated. The service was pleasant but a little slow. Live music upstairs is nice to hear but I would recommend sitting downstairs if you want to talk as it's very loud upstairs. This restaurant would be okay for children who are adventurous eaters (and who have parents who will walk, not drive, back to the hotel after their flight of whiskeys).

Yummy food

By Dana S |

Had the tasting menu and every dish was tasty. None of the dishes were out of this world good, but none of them were bad either. The server was ok. The decor and ambiance is simple. The acoustics were terrible - it was hard to hear anyone. Ok place, but I’ll prob never go back.

I wish I had dinner here.

By SoloTheBest |

I came here late for a drink with my son. The place has two floors of space. The bottom floor has a full bar servicing the many restaurant tables. The upstairs area has a full bar, live music area and plenty of sitting at and around the bar. There is also a small room off the side with comfortable couches, chairs and fireplaces. I liked the decor and would love to try a dinner service here. The places seems to cater towards beers, bourbons and whiskeys. Our bartender was very nice and personable. I really liked the decor. It was manly. I felt at home with my beard. This is a nice place for a drink.

Surprised

By Bill M |

Heard the blues playing, had to check it out. Had been here a a year ago for drinks and music late night. Had a great time but the kitchen been closed. This time it was early so we popped in for a quick look. Ordered some appies and we were blown away. The fresh corn bread was great, the ham with poached pears was delicious but the glazed carrots were something extraordinary. We ordered a second! The blues guitar, the food and the bourbon were memorable!

Tapas & Drinks

By ElleMlr |

We ordered a wide variety a plates and enjoyed them all. We particularly like the octopus & crawfish mac n cheese. The waitress recommended the blackberry gimlet and it’s deadly amazing, we drank them all night. Service was excellent as well.

Great Restaurant and Bar Experience

By Nancy O |

First time here and loved the whole experience as it definitely reminds me of pubs in England and Ireland. The service was friendly, helpful and efficient. Loved the upper area where you can relax, listen to music and eat delicious foods with friends. My favorite dish here is the fried chicken - the best ever! I loved the selection of wines - my choice for the cabernet was excellent. I definitely will return to enjoy the whole dining experience. I highly recommend.

Good Meal

By NCLADDS5 |

Had brunch on 5/18/14. Chicken and Sweet Potato Waffles, omelet, BLT and Crawfish Mac and cheese. Meal was very good and wait staff were helpful and attentive. Definitely would return.

Good Beer, Clean Establishment, Slow Service

By Spring B |

I'm not a complainer by any sorts, and I have to say I 'felt bad' giving this just 2 stars, but from the time we walked in it Took about 10 minutes to get service and we were the only ones there, minus the lady and dog sitting on the patio. We all ordered a beer and a few apps, beer was great...food not so much! It's fair to say we only had two lunch time apps, so quite possibly things get better as the day goes on, it was just 11 AM when we walked in. Inside the place is emaculate and very well kept. Gives off a very classy vibe!

Great food and service

By T D |

Excellent food and service once we were seated. Throughly enjoyed all of our plates - food is excellent and our server Nick was amazing.

Awesome good food, amazing spirit selection plus jazz

By Marlene G S |

We live several blocks away and dined here quite a few times. They got their original chef back a little while ago and food is really wonderful. Atmosphere is not high end elegant - sort of wooden tables and a bit spartan in appearance but food is really wonderful - it is not cheap though and stuff adds up. If they offer you any special liquors - ask the price first. We got a shock when we got the bill and one drink my husband had was 27 dollars. Tourists - you will enjoy this - stay away from the Chart house. This is the real deal.

Drinks oly on this visit.....we'll be back!

By Thomas M |

We stopped here recently for before dinner drinks and had a great time. Fun and comfortable place offering their own take on classic cocktails as specialties. Ours were carefully and expertly made by our bartender. Delicious and perfect. Like I said we will be back for sure.

Great Late Night Blues Music

By mwooduk |

We were staying at the Sheraton Society Hill which is less than a ten minute walk from this venue and South Street - came in here for a late night drink and because we heard some excellent blues music coming from upstairs. Can't comment on food as we had already eaten dinner. The music upstairs in the bar was amazing, a really great blues quartet was playing, the bar was busy and lots of happy people drinking and enjoying great music. We did not stay a very long time as it was very stuffy and airless upstairs but we did go two nights in a row to hear the music because it was of such high quality. Recommended for a late night drink and some good music!

Good atmosphere and very good food.

By ccham |

The lamb chops and swordfish were excellent. Wait staff was initially very good then non responsive once we had our meals. I would recommend this place for the very good food.

Great hidden gem!!

By jodierbg |

We stumbled on this restaurant while walking around the Society Hill neighborhood. All the food was great, especially the country rice balls & the cheese selection the waitress recommended. Would definelty go back for another visit!

COLLEEN COLLEEN COLLEEN!

By antgat15 |

Well I have named this review after my server because she was great!! She new that menu as if she wrote it her self. Fantastic job Colleen! I can say enough about this place! The food was excellent, service was fantastic. We enjoyed our food on a Saturday evening on the second floor before the band came on so I can't comment on the noise level. We had the octopus wagyu beef tartare, country bbq spare ribs, Burrata salad and the harvest veggie burger. Of course we knocked our wine glass on the floor and it shattered. The staff rushed over and cleaned up the glass in 3 seconds flat. In that same time our waitress rushed a new glass of red wine to our table free of charge!! We will be going back with out hesitation!!

Wanted to like this one. Good

By Nancy L |

Wanted to like this one. Good bourbon selection. Cheese board expensive for what you got. Chorizo taco was ok. Prices seemed high for what you got. The server we had was not nice and that is what I remember most about the visit. They added gratuity for a party of six.

Good food, good service

By Irishyankee811 |

The menu is not extensive but there are small plates, appetizers and entrees. The good was good. We had the hanger steak and it was done perfectly as ordered. It came with a large amt of tasty roasted fingerling potatoes. No tables inside, so we had dinner outside. Reservation might help. Desert was small but good.

Out of towners! why get a cheesesteak when you can eat HERE!!

By Lisa S |

Arrived in Philly, one day trip with mission to "have a Philly cheesesteak". after many recommends, wound up a few blocks from Twisted Tape at a famous cheesesteak place. OF COURSE...the line was around the block at lunchtime for the cheesesteak. Running short on time, we walked a few blocks and found this gem. Sorry...NO cheesesteak, but terrific/interesting food, cocktails, seating, service, ambiance...just perfect. SO glad we skipped the sub and stumbled into Twisted Tale!

Smoked wings for lunch

By Paul L |

Wings were very salty. Hard to enjoy as it was very overpowering. Friendly service and reasonably priced.

Nice bar, music, and atmosphere

By dreamgenie |

This place bills itself as a bourbon juke joint--they have a wide selection of bourbon and mixed drinks. The ambience is casual and rustic, like an old farmhouse. I had a refreshing pineapple margarita, crawfish mac-n-cheese, and artichoke shrimp salad. My husband had a bourbon on the rocks, beet salad, and chorizo taco. The margarita was refreshing and not too sweet. The crawfish mac-n-cheese was just OK--it had just a few pieces of crawfish and not much cheese, mostly butter, but it was a generous portion. It was Wednesday night, and as we were finishing our meal the house blues singer and guitarist came on--they sounded great. I think there's live music on weekend nights as well. I'd say the food is about average, but it has a laid-back ambiance, good drinks, and is a nice place to relax. There's a really nice bar/lounge area upstairs, with a fireplace and comfortable stuffed chairs, a perfect spot to hang out and enjoy the afternoon or evening.

Terrific place!!

By Eriegirl1963 |

Enjoyed this great little eatery while on a family trip this weekend. From entrance to exit, there was truly not one negative comment to give the Twisted Tail. We had 14 in our party (5 of which were children ages 3 to 9) and they didn't blink an eye on the chaos that blew in with our crew. Staff was awesome! Food was awesome. Prices seemed reasonable.

Awesome meal

By Beth M |

The food was incredible and the service was top notch. We had the whipped ricotta small plate which was fantastic. Blue point oysters and hanger steak were excellent. The potatoes that came with the steak were seasoned to perfection. We both travel nationally and internationally for work and the meal we had here was easily one of the best we’ve had in years. The cocktails were delicious. I’m shocked this place wasn’t packed.

Chef tasting way to go.

By barbo4bp |

Great food. Good service. Nice atmosphere. The waiter suggested the chef tasting and it did not disappoint. Would go again.

We really liked it!

By Shaun M |

Right off South Street. Sat outside on a warm summer night. Food and presentation was excellent! BTW Cauliflower Steak is a veggie...

Great GF Options

By akronohio |

Great GF options here ! I had the steak with blue cheese and potatoes and it was very good. They even have some GF appetizers and grill items. I tasted the chorizo taco which was spicy but good. My travel companion had the non GF chicken in a bag which he liked very much and bacon ice cream which he also said was good. The server knew exactly what i could and couldn't have from the menu which is great. This location is nice and they had accoustic guitar music on tuesday nigth which was very nice. Its in a walking area with other bars/stores and a nice location. We walked from the Hyatt hotel which took 10 mins or less. would visit again.

Rehearsal Dinner party

By John-Sue Z |

We held our son's rehearsal dinner at the Twisted Tail 2nd floor space. The staff did a great job in having everything set up and replenished during the evening. They were very professional in the whole quote/proposal/contract process. We even received a call the day of the party to be sure if we had any last questions/concerns. The food was delicious and the service during the party was very good. I did not give them a 5 star rating due to 1) the dinner napkins were cocktail napkins 2) the flowers we paid to have on the table did not seem worth the cost and 3) the top shelf bar was serving Canyon Rd Chardonnay that we considered a sub-par brand (however they swapped it out to Hess after we discussed the issue). Our guests loved the venue and the food.

Eclectic menu

By kendrick |

Some interesting choices on the menu, I had red drum fish -similar to bass- which was very good. Our group shared a cheese plate, excellent selection of cheeses. We split a couple of desserts as well. Portions are not large, but we were overall satisfied. Service was also very good. With drinks and tip it came to $50.00 per person. Casual atmosphere, nice neighborhood.

Crowded, Lively, Fun

By heylo |

We had a great meal at this restaurant in Society Hill. The food was great and the atmosphere was lively. Cool décor.

Thanksgiving 2018

By Craig G |

This restaurant was recommended by a friend of our daughters’. It was wonderful. We arrived about twenty minutes early and were asked to wait at the bar. We were called in less than five minutes. It is a very fun place to visit. We had a great waiter. The meal was served family style. Each of us could order our own meat. Two of us ordered turkey and the other two ordered prime rib. The other choices were short ribs and salmon. Then the sides were served family style. There was mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, kale salad, baked beans, Brussels sprouts and corn bread dressing. All tasted excellent!. Then we could choose two of the three pies they offered. We ordered pumpkin and pecan. I would highly recommend this restaurant.

Nice cozy restaurant with less fancy restaurant "Atteetood"

By Mark V |

We had a very nice anniversary weekend dinner here. Quiet and easy going. Great bar selection, especially of good bourbon. We had lamb meatballs, Shishito peppers crab-cakes (better and different from usual) and very well prepared swordfish. All just perfect. And, oh yes, apple streusel was worth the calories. Service was fine.

Great meal - highly recommend

By nursematilda |

We stumbled across this restaurant after visiting bookstores in the neighbourhood. We were a bit wary given the negative reviews from 2022, but - wow - it was all amazing. We had the chef's menu of five courses. Every dish was delicious. We also ordered the cheese board, which was fantastic. Our server was very knowledgable and friendly. I highly recommend this place.

Mothers day with friends

By Trevor F |

We were here for mothers day. Wasn't to crowded. We were seated upstairs but at the far end from where the bands played. Music was good. Food was very good, service was top notch. We got the tasting menu, which was probably a mistake. We had the Lamb meat balls. These were very tasty. Had the ribs and they were good, but not amazing. Smoked duck. Eh, take it or leave it. Mushroom salad was something I wouldn't order. Al little dry and nothing different then another salad. Swordfish was very good. Desert, I don't remember exactly what it was but it was a small sliver of some type of chocolate cake. Which the 4 of us had to share. Literally one spoonful each. It was more of a joke then anything. We did enjoy the meal. Great location. Good service. Enjoyable music. Just felt the tasting menu was more of a waste. I expected the chef to send out a few items other then the ones we picked.

Great food interesting twists on classics

By NJTracyJean |

We had dinner here on a beautiful spring evening and took advantage of the weather to eat alfresco. Small plates and entrees available. The menu was very interesting with classics and very imaginative preparation and beautiful presentation. For example: a yummy crab cake made with whole grain mustard and served with radish slices. The green goddess flatbread with asparagus was both beautiful and delicious. Best cheese curds I’ve ever eaten (and I hail from Wisconsin!) Fresh salads and the hanger steak was well prepared and tasty with seasoning and potatoes. Service was excellent. I dont drink but they are known for their bourbon/whiskey menu which was extensive. May be of interest to some. Prices were reasonable for great dining in the city. Would definitely eat here again!

Excellent food excellent service

By Karima C |

Hubby and I had the shrimp skewer appetizer (small but savory) the buttermilk chicken sandwich, and sweet potato fries for lunch; it was delicious. We sat outside on a very calm early weekday evening. The server/bartender was attentive and warm. Great experience--will revisit.

Excellent little lunch menu and tasty drinks

By Jaki F |

We stopped here for lunch after walking around South Street. We sat at the bar and the bartender was really friendly. He recommended some great drinks and the fried green tomato blt was excellent.

good food, great atmosphere

By DorisHeimgartner |

We've been wandering around and about Philly the whole morning and landed here for lunch. We had some very tasty salads and good beers. Service was friendly and welcoming. As we sat outside, there was passersby to observe and we really had a relaxing time. A good choice.

Great drinks! Cant wait try the food next time!

By Wander |

We came here for after dinner drinks and were very happy with our experience here. Great cocktails and an extensive bourbon list that I will have to come back to try more of. We also wish to return for a sampling of the food menu because everything looked delicious

Thanksgiving not welcome

By Peter |

The best way to read the following review is to pause ten minutes between each sentence. Then you can experience what dining was like at Twisted Tail. I came for the Thanksgiving meal in November of 2016. My children were visiting and it was to be a special occasion. We waited twenty minutes after our reservation time for a table. The food was part of a fixed menu for the holiday yet it was not ready. It took more than half an hour after we were seated for any food to arrive and when it did the portions were tiny and the food was not very good. This was Thanksgiving dinner in a family style and there was not enough to share. I asked the waitress for a second portion of mashed potatoes and was told she would have to charge us extra. I asked for the manager and was given the food but the service changed from glacial to glacial and surly afterward. We would have left the restaurant but because of the holiday there was no alternative for a meal. I left my business card with the manager to talk about the experience after the holiday rush but nobody got back to me. I run my own small business and I bend over backwards for my customers. I was embarrassed for this restaurant and its poor service, food and management response. I understand that a few bad meals can happen to an otherwise good restaurant, but there seemed to be a lack of preparation and concern for this holiday meal.

Nice place to chill after a long walk around Phily

By Andres N |

Their drafts options are interesting, burger was nice too, recommended, I really liked the background music and service was outstanding!!

LOVE this restaurant! Must go!!

By Margo F |

The reviews of the Twisted Tail brought us in and they were spot on. We absolutely loved our experience! The atmosphere is a perfect balance of home comfort and sophistication. The service is friendly and professional. Every item we tried was phenomenal! It's all fresh, the ingredients are simple and the food is prepared beautifully! The honey crisp & brussel sprout salad was refreshing and so yummy. Veal meatballs, shrimp and grits, it all was wonderful. Fun night out for family or group of friends. Lots of parking outside so one of the more accessible city restaurants. You must try it!!

Great place

By Heather B |

We live in the city and we didn't think this place would be great but it was! The bar tenders were great. We had a great time the band was good.

Just no

By g3times |

Friendly staff. Seated right away. Ordered two turkey sandwiches and one order of fries. The iced tea was ok. After that it was a train wreck. The sandwiches turned out to be club sandwiches, which is too moch bread for us. The bacon on them was so far undercooked that I'm not sure that it even made it into the frying pan. Unercooked pork is not a safe meal. The lettuce had a lot of the hard center and was beginning to brown in spots. One of my tomatoes was unripe. I wonder, would the person who fixed this actually eat it? I seriously doubt it. They were also served on bread boards. This is also not safe as far as I am concerned. We graduated to china and glass plates many, many years ago. I'm not sure bread boards are sanitized enough for serving wet foods. Now to the fries. Way too salty. WAY too salty. Then the bill is north of $30? We didn't complain because if it can't be coooked or fixed right to begin with, I don't want any of their other items, and if the preparer would actually eat bacon, lettuce and tomatoes like this, they will probably be out sick more than at work. Terrible. All around.

Fantastic food!

By zoeb_11 |

After visiting the south, I was still craving some of that brilliant food - and this place certainly delivers! The fried chicken in a bag is to die for, and the corn bread ain't bad either. Great cocktails too - can't go past a Mint Julep.

Restaurant week deal

By dkbe |

During that week, you get a 4-course dinner for 35 bucks. Not cheap, but definitely worth it! That way you can try many different things, and they do well! We were sitting outside, much more quiet and relaxing. Especially recommended: both sausage charcoal dishes, the ham appetizer and the braised ribs.

Great Atmosphere, Great Food

By SDL248 |

Found this restaurant because it was in a discount book I had received as a gift. It was so wonderful my husband and I will go back, even without the discount! The atmosphere is very comfortable and casual. There was live music downstairs when we arrived, and then later in the evening another performer upstairs. We opted to sit further away from the performer downstairs, the music was great, but it did get hard to have normal conversation at some points. Our server was one of the most knowledgeable I ever encountered- he knew each dish, the ingredients and was able to describe all the liquors as well. The food was beautifully presented and delicious. The octopus was outstanding, the crawfish mac & cheese ok, the halibut dish was wonderful and complex and the fried chicken with honey most and delicious. There is a large bar in the middle and a few tables with heaters outside on the sidewalk. There are a few steps to get into the place, so not wheelchair friendly. Parking may be hard, there is limited on street parking and 2 garages one block away. We paid $25 for parking in one. We will be back and want to try the brunch. It's also in a great area to take a stroll before or after a meal.

Cool Vibe

By denjolu |

We ordered several appetizers at the bar and had drinks. They have a huge list of bourbons and whiskey. Would have liked to see a bit more crawfish in the mac and cheese but it was delicious. All the appetizers were great. When we arrived, a man was playing guitar and singing downstairs. Upstairs there was a live band. Laid back vibe.

Good Food, Good People, Good Drinks, Good Atmosphere

By jbakerrr |

The title says it all...........and the price was not bad at all either. This has become my new "go to" place

Great if you want poor service and high-priced, weak food

By MaineTravel50 |

Went here with friends to dine and hear the Dean Shot blues band in December. The food selections were diverse with some interesting choices with one being a "barnegat scallop cassoulet" that one of us ordered. It was NOT a cassoulet in any sense of the imagination but 3 scallops in some beans, not at all resembling a cassoulet whatsoever. Bad move. Others had the short ribs, the pork chop, and the flatiron steak which were at best, fair. Whiskey selections were vast but pricey and one of the drink specials was a blueberry infused tequila which wasn't bad. The service. Well, the service was pretty disappointing. In fact, really disappointing. It wasn't that crowded and we were served by a trainee and someone supervising her. The trainee didn't know the menu and both were seldom seen throughout the evening as we had to go looking for them or ask for them to other staff. Not a good impression and it was a pain to look for them to refill our drinks or to get service. The high note of the evening was the band. Based on our experience, it wasn't worth the high prices for mediocre food and rotten service.

Very good service and quality throughout

By Mark D |

Came for a late evening snack after a long journey. Very attentive service without being overbearing. Choice of food was a little limited, so I went for 2 starters being a bit of a fish freak. My choice of wine was only by the bottle so I went for a strong beer instead. The food came very quickly and was well presented and well cooked plus decent portions. Relatively good value for money as the whole meal (2 starters plus 1 beer) came to $35.

Still Hungry

By Greg D |

The food was good but sadly I will not be knocking down any doors to return. I don't want to give a place a bad review when it was my first time here. We came with a party of nine and everyone had the same comment. The food was ok but not note worthy. My cornbread came so damn hot I really wish someone would have said something, luckily I only had a small piece so I didn't get burned. The pork and beans was all over cooked. The beans tasted burnt and the pork was dry. Part of this is my fault. I asked what the cook was before I ordered and was told it was cooked all the way through, I should have asked what that meant. Four at our table had the Sea Bass and all left wanting more, small portion for being on the full plate part of the menu. The two kids had the Mac and cheese and neither finished because of salty they thought it was, I actually liked that! If we lived local we would probably give the small bites a try for another chance but being on vacation their are other places that I want to try while in this great city!!

Philly Restaurant Week 2018

By Sherri W |

I arrived at the restaurant 5 minutes late for my reservation but was seated immediately. A few minutes later the second individual of a four person party arrived. While waitIng for the last two ladies we ordered a 3 artisanal cheese board that included caramelized pecans, apple butter, and toast. So very delicious. Our waiter Shaun explained everything to us clearly so we were able to make choices we would like. The service was quick and efficient. We had zero complaints about the food and service. Our water glasses were refilled without asking, the plates were cleared from the table shortly after we finished a dish to make room for the next one. I truly enjoyed the lamb tenderloin, smoked wings, braised short rib, and Ricotta Beignets with Bourbon Caramel sauce. I also tried The Crawfish Mac and cheese and that was good as well.

Fabulous Chef tasting!

By nikki b |

My friend and I had reservations for a Saturday and we got a table right away!!! The waiter had awesome suggestions we chose the “Chefs tastings” & we enjoyed every course ! My favorite was the BBQ ribs and the Spanish octopus. We’re happy we got to try so many dishes and will be back again!

Pleasant surprise

By myshaw |

It looked quite ordinary from the outside, but we were attracted to the fact there was live music nightly. WHAT A SURPRISE! Not only are the staff friendly, and knowledgeable, but totally into the fact that the drinks are specially infused, and the chef is excellent. Our waiter explained the complex method of infusion and the drinks were fabulous. The food was served hot, and seasoned to perfection. I had sliced duck breast on a bed of creamed barley that was exquisite. This was the type of evening that we didn't want to end. A young man was playing a steel guitar, and we enjoyed his music immensely. A few nights later, we were looking for somewhere to go for an after dinner nightcap, and again wandered into Twisted Tail. This time, there was a 4 piece band playing jazz upstairs. We each ordered a glass of wine and enjoyed the musical selction for about an hour. This is a most comfortable and welcoming eatery. We heartily recommend you go.

great atmosphere and delicious food

By heidicommins |

Food was delicious. started with a cheese plate. The short ribs were melt-in-my-mouth tender, juicy and flavorful!! Creative cocktails; so many good ones to choose from. We will definitely go back.

Great food, highly recommend it - but bring ear plugs

By marco_polo2K |

Great relaxed pub type of atmosphere. This is a place to have fun. Have been there on a few occasions. Will keep going back when I visit Philadelphia. The food is tasty and varied. Many small plates to chose from. My favorites are the quail, the lamb chops, the pork & lamb meatballs and wonderful salads. Probably the one dish we order repeatedly is the honey-crusted chicken. There is also an extensive and outstanding collection of beer and wine. The only down side to this establishment is the noise level. It is almost impossible to carry on a conversation even at the extreme end away from the music. The artist singing the Blues is very talented but he should bring down the volume by a few decibels. The ceiling is not high and the combination of other patrons talking, laughing in addition to the music is deafening.

Great Bourbon

By John N Deb P |

We came to this place for some great whiskeys. They had a great variety. We also had a fantastic plate of various hams and cheeses. The food was great. The service was wonderful.

My new favorite bar!

By PalakPatel811 |

Went here last night with my husband and sat at the bar upstairs for a few drinks. The bartender concocted a drink for me based on what I liked and when I told him how much I loved the drink and wished I could make it at home- he wrote down the recipe for me! Joe the bartender made me feel like this was my neighborhood bar. They have a great beer list and specials on food are unbeatable. I will definitely be returning with all of my friends. Can't believe I've never visited this place before !

Mixed

By ksteveco |

The food was delicious, other than undercooked bacon on the shrimp BLT. But the long wait to be served despite being the only ones in the restaurant (it was between lunch and dinner) was disappointing as was the fact that after the food came the server didn’t return (to refresh drinks, etc ) until she brought the check.

Great Time, good food, better drinks

By J. Antonio PA |

The Twisted Tail location is almost magical. Right in the hear of colonial America with a sense of timelessness that can only be offered by very few places. The food was great. We decided to go Tapas Style, so ended un trying a little of everything. There was nothing I disliked. The smoked ribs were outstanding, and also the Sacallops. The Brussels Sprouts were unbelievable (I cannot believe I just wrote that). The bourbon and beer selection are phenomenal, and the service so good that you hardly even notice it. Sorry I took no pictures. I was having a fantastic time and wanted to stay away a, as much as possible, from my phone. Do go. Enjoy!

Rehearsal Dinner Party

By ondlinks |

The Twisted Tail hosted our rehearsal dinner on Friday night. We had a private room and buffet dinner service. Our hostess Jullian set up the event, which turned out great. All our friends raved about the menu of shrimp and grits, chicken wings, pulled pork, mac and cheese and Brussels sprouts. The Twisted Tail put on a good party.

Twisted Tail Set Us Straight

By D Hop |

Planned an early Twisted Tail dinner before a show. Pleasantly surprised after 5 PM on Wed need not feed the parking meters out front. The hostess seating us was energetic, nice, & full of restaurant & menu information. Put in a rush dinner order for four in order to make our show. Food arrived promptly and was very good! Steak, salmon, & salad all met expections! We all thought to return for another meal and catch some music at Twisted Tail in the future!

Drinks and dessert not worth it

By Peanutgrl7 |

We sat outside enjoying a beautiful night. We tried drinks....they were better then what we had eariler in night but not great! The one drink I was told was super sweet and when I got it, it was bitter. Not sure what drink they tasted because it definately was not sweet. The pear cucumber drink was overpowered with cucumber. Ricotta donuts with caramel pecan sauce....not really good. The food did look good but the dessert is not worth it by far. Waiter was nice Popcorn was the best part.

TTT (The Twisted Tail), EXCELLENT!!

By kencavanaugh |

Food was excellent, servers called us by name (very friendly), and George Reilly (the owner) spent lots of time socializing with us and other patrons!! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

fun place, live music some nights, bar specials

Creative menu, great atmosphere. Special pricing for early dinner time but you need to sit at the bar for it to apply.

Researched a birthday dinner spot and was very happy to land at The Twisted Tail. Rustic vibes was spot on especially with the music for the night which was blues-ish. Anthony was very welcoming getting us to our table and David was a great server. We ordered beef tartare which was a nice size dish. We ordered for entrees the double cut pork chop and hangar steak. The dishes were very tasty and would highly suggest these! We’ll look for our next time back here for sure!

Great tavern style restaurant

Checked out the Twisted Tail this weekend and have a new local favorite! A great selection of seafood that was prepared very well. Loved the fall bourbon specialty drink too!

Great if you want poor service and high-priced, weak food

By MaineTravel50 |

Came here with friends to dine and hear the Dean Shot Blues Band at the end of Dec. An eclectic menu that seemed interesting as well as a diverse whiskey menu, the food was unimpressive and failed to deliver. The "Barnegat scallop cassoulet" was a small bowl of beans and 3 scallops for $22.00 and was NOT a cassoulet. Other choices included flatiron steak, short ribs, and the pork chop and all were equally mediocre, at best. We were served by a trainee and a more experienced server. The trainee didn't know the menu at all and after getting initial drinks and our dinner, they were seldom seen and we had to look for them or ask other staff to find them when we wanted to keep ordering. Needless to say, the dining and service experience was dismal. The band, however, was great. Based on the high prices, poor quality food, and the pathetic service, we won't be back. Not recommended.

Great Bar and restaurant

By Steve K |

Visited on a Saturday evening for drinks before dinner and the place was very busy. Attractive room, very welcoming and comfortable, fully stocked bar offering unique drink specialties. Stray from your standard drink order and have the bartender put something together for you. Great way to get our evening off to a wonderful start.

Walking around Society Hill

Came across this place while walking around the city. Suburb service and knowledge of their speciality cheeses. Highly recommend, especially due to the service.

restaurant week treat

By John R |

had a family birthday celebration; great happy hour followed by a nice selection for restaurant week. would like to go back when the entertainment is performing (there on a Monday)

Noisy, overpriced, with good live entertainment

By Manco T |

Smack in the middle of the Philly's historic area, this lively place seems to draw a younger crowd (i.e. late 20s, early 30s). The food was good but overpriced. Both the first-floor dining room and the music room upstairs (without the live music happening) are very loud and it was hard to carry on a conversation with our group of six. There was a great blues band playing the night we were there so that helped carry us through. I would recommend you eat dinner somewhere else and then end up in the second floor music space for the bands.

A tasty Thanksgiving or why cook

By Golfdick |

There were just 3 of us for Thanksgiving so we decided to come here for dinner and we were extremely happy with our choice. Our reservation was honored on time and things only got better. We chose the turkey for our entrees which was accompanied by a family style slate of sides. The turkeys was tasty and moist. The sides were all exceptional. They included kale salad, mashed potatoes, Brussels sprouts, baked bean, sweet potatoes, cornbread stuffing. As I said these were all outstanding. We were stuffed so we took our desserts to go. 3 hours later as I write this I am noshing on the pecan pie and smiling. Service was friendly and professional. Just a great dining experience.

very good

By John L |

We went to Twisted Tail to check out a wedding band. We had dinner and champagne. The dinner was a combination that was very reasonable. an appetizer to share, a small plate to share and a salad to share plus and entry each. The appetizer was grilled octopus that was very good with small potatoes, excellent. The small plate was oysters which were very good. The salad was a mushroom salad with a lot of salad and a few mushrooms. The best were the entries of braised ribs which are delicious and fried chicken with sweet potatoes fries that were steak cut and perfect. The only issue we had was that we had a bottle of Veuve Cliquot at $98 dollars a bottle. We Ubered so we had a second bottle but only got about a 1/3 of the bottle when the waiter , Shawn, declared the champagne was gone. ( the table was small so he kept the champagne in a bucket at the bar). Either someone helped themselves to the champagne or their was an accident an they told us it was gone. Kind of disappointed with that situation of course. Overall the ,meal was great at a great price! We had a glass of Ice wine to make up for the loss of the champagne ( we paid for that of course),and that was very good. The beignet were excellent and they were included in the $45 per person meal. A very good value!

Great dining experience.

Interesting food and decor. Classic, but unique drink selection. Live music. Fireplace and games. This place is classy and has it all.

Perfect dinner, will be back

By Ange516 |

We stumbled upon this restaurant by total coincidence, by looking up restaurants near Spruce Street Harbour on google maps. It sounded good and our experience left nothing to be desired. First of all, the space is really nice, on Society Hill, along a charming street, and the interior design is cosy and hip at the same time. You can sit outside or inside. Second, we had a brilliant waiter, Anthony, who gave us very honest opinions about the food we intended to order. For example, he recommended the shrimp and peach starter which was outstanding. We also had the duck nuggets which were very good. We also had the mussels and the smoked chicken wings which we were very happy with. For desert we ordered the pear with vanilla ice cream which was delicious, and the strawberry shortcake which was good but didn't blow me over. We all had beer according to our taste (incl. gluten-free), they have an extensive beer and whiskey menu - and you won't be disappointed. We really had a delightful evening which was very much thanks to Anthony's excellent recommendations and the good food and drinks in a beautiful atmosphere. There's live music, too. But it started at 9pm when we were finished, so we didn't get too much of a taste of it. We will definitely be back when in Philly again!

Brunch

By NiecyC |

Just finished brunch here and it was delicious! The orange juice is fresh squeezed, and my husband loved the tea assortment. The highlight of our meal was the cheese curds, fried to perfection. The service was outstanding, at the door the hostess asks you if you have any allergies, and the manager comes to check on you and notes that she heard about the food allergies. Next time we are in Philly, we will definitely return!

Average!

By TribTraveler |

We stopped in for a late lunch on July 4th. The service was kind of slow. We sat for quite awhile before we were waited on. The sandwiches were HUGE! Two people could split one sandwich. Overall, an average experience.

Best Blues Bar in Philly + Great Food!

By SwingDJ |

The Twisted Tail is an awesome spot in the South Street area of philadelphia. I am here most Sundays and in fact, I'm going there twice this weekend! The dining area is downstairs or you can eat outdoors on Head House square. Upstairs there is live music most nights and Sunday night is the infamous Blues Jam hosted by Mikey Jr. The people who come in are really good ...this is not a frat-boy rock party pretending to be blues. People come in to partner dance and everyone is welcome. The food is excellent, there is an incredible bourbon list and the craft beer selection is also very good (I'm into beer and it's great to go someplace that isn't just 10 ipas and lagers.

Favorite whiskey bar.

By cscowcroft |

Love the whiskey/bourbon/scotch selection and the food is amazing. Bartenders were well educated with food and drink pairings while not being too pushy. Also has a great beer selection.

Excellent choice for high end pub food

By Scott |

Remarkably good food. Well presented and filling without having to serve giant portions. Great drink selection and consistently excellent service. At least before covid, live music most nights with a bluesy vibe. Excellent place for weekend brunch, after work social hour or an evening date.

Bourbon, Blues and Southern Food

By Nigel G |

This is a bar serving eclectic food with, time your visit right, live Blues music in the large bar upstairs. There is a large list of beers, bourbon and whisky; and a small but interesting menu ranging through from snacks to a full tasting platter. Being from the UK some of the food descriptions were beyond me, but we had a very good waitress who could explain everything. The Boubons were fantastic in range and when we asked for an old favourite not on the menu there was someone to give us the options of something similar in taste. If you want a dress down full on evening experience I cannot recommend this place to highly.

Miss on the most important part

By mthurlow |

Service was great, all the staff were friendly and helpful and the cocktail was good. The decor was interesting and the singer was actually really good. However all the food was over cooked and the recipes not quite right (what were the hard bits with the scallops?). My client’s fried chicken was dark and dry, my braised rib was burnt on the bottom of the pan during the braising so it was tough and dry instead of what braised short rib should be. Also it seems their one garnish is a micro-green that goes on everything from smoked wings (which were great btw), to scallops, to short rib, to shrimp and grits. It’s a nice place with great people just overall a subpar experience.

Unique, fun, and great food

By Cathy C |

First of all, I'm a foodie- a gluten free foodie if you can imagine such a thing. Found this place on my Find Me Gluten Free ap and then checked trip advisor for reviews. We decided to check it out. It has a very nice outdoor area and a fun vibe. The menu is eclectic and varied, and even though I'm a serious foodie, there were a few terms I wasn't familiar with. Yay google! Anyway, the server was polite and helpful, and brought out this wonderful rosemary popcorn with black truffle oil. It is killer! Worth going just for that! We got the ac and cheese appetizer (my son loved it but I couldn't try it), sweet potato fries (served woth 4 house made sauces), the pork chop and the wagyu steak. I posted pictures but because it was dark inside they don't do the food justice. Everything g was cooked perfectly and really delicious. The bill for the food and one beer came to about $100 including 20% tip. Worth it for a very nice meal.

Vibrant Space w/ Fantastic Food

By MSchlaeger |

Relaxed environment with attentive staff and an inspired menu. Stayed for about 4 hrs. It was that good. Great music and a fun experience.

Good food! Service is great!

By eok3027 |

We have been here twice and enjoyed it both times. The food is delicious! My daughter and husband had the chicken and waffles and they said it was really good. I had a veggie omelet. It was good. My son had the eggs benedict, and he said they were excellent. The people who work here are super friendly.

A different twist

By momof7ds |

I have been eyeing this cute little restaurant for several weeks. Had an opportunity to enjoy brunch there today. Everything was delicious; the host and wait staff were superb from greeting us at the door to recommend in drink and menu choices. It was a HOT day and we enjoyed a signature champagne pop which was a lovely chilled champagne with fresh fruit juice popsicles standing in the glass. My daughter and I enjoyed an appetizer of cheese curds- not your everyday fried cheese. Absolutely delicious. We followed with sandwiches- a buttermilk fried chicken and a fried eggplant (with bacon jam!). Both were ample size and reasonably priced. If you find yourself in Society Hill on South Street be sure to stop in.

Great little spot.

By Heather W |

Nice twists on classic cuisine. Have been to this location twice for what they consider "brunch". On both visits, we got the artisanal cheese plate - they have a great selection of cheeses, and you can pair them with aged meats as well. Good stuff. If you are interested in BBQ, make sure you time your visit, as I believe they do not start their dinner menu until 5pm (call to confirm) -- we found that out on our first visit, but felt the lunch/brunch menu was worth coming back for.

A Tail of Excellance

By Gene33Ford |

The food here is fantastic! We had a mix of "small" dishes and everything was just out of site. We were in town for business and Ubered from the Penn University area. The Twisted Tail is also a burbon and blues bar. This place is definitely worth checking out if you are in Philadelphia. I recommend reservations if you want to go on the weekend.

Wonderful Dining Experience

By Gadgetsgal |

While walking one evening at Penn's Landing on the Philadelphia waterfront, we headed back to the B & B, looking for a nice place to rest and have a bite. We came upon this charming place and were seated at a table out front, by the heater, which was comfortable on a spring night. The wait staff was very accommodating with reciting suggestions from the chef and we decided to have a five-cheese board, which also came with delicious thinly sliced ham, sliced baguette, and homemade apple butter. We also ordered a skillet of their Mac and cheese, which was big enough for four generous servings. Everything was soooo good! With two having wine and my Bloody Mary, you could not ask for anything more. Oh yes, and a delightful singer performing inside, where we eventually moved because a cool wind kicked up...and this didn't bother our server at all...she helped us accomplish the move cheerfully. A very nice surprise at the end of a long walking day in the city of Brotherly Love!

Excellent food, good service, funny waitstaff

By 977michaelr2 |

My wife and I went for dinner at the Twisted tail. The menu was brand new with several new items including a Jersey tomato salad that was excellent. The salmon was good and prepared as requested, the braised ribs were tender and tasty. The peach dessert was a surprise, the ice cream was prepared by the chef and could not be bought anywhere (we asked). The price was reasonable. We will be going back there at least weekly.

Very good food for foodies

By Jonnyjetprop |

We stopped in for dinner on our first night in Philadelphia. We opted for the chef's tasting menu at $45 per person. There was no shortage of food and we got to sample many of the small plate items. The bar served good cocktails and there was a good selection of beers as well. The service was very good and extremely knowledgeable about the dishes. It was worth the spurge.

Surprisingly good food

By 729ashleyr |

For a place that prides themselves on their alcohol selection I was surprised how good the food was. It was a diverse menu perfect for sharing. We all had the hot spiked apple cider to drink. It was fantastic. The fresh whipped cream on top was awesome. That was the first round. The second and third, the whipped cream had melted and partway through the beverage started to curdle. Our server was lovely. He was enthusiastic and helped us through the menu. We tried a handful of dishes on the menu. They were all quality dishes. We had grilled octopus, sausage, meatballs, foi gras, shrimp and grits, steak, and left very satisfied. It is not just a place for bourbon. They also have an extensive cheese menu, but we did not indulge.

Outstanding Choice for a Social Event

By CTsHome |

A year ago we wandered into this swanky bourbon bar in Society Hill for an excellent Manhattan. The atmosphere was casually festive, and I perused the layout and observed how patrons truly seemed to be enjoying their food and drinks. I tucked it aside and was pleased when our son and his fiancé agreed to allow us to host a gathering on the night before their wedding at The Twisted Tail. We couldn’t have made a better choice! We offered a dinner to the smaller group of rehearsal participants followed by drinks for any of the wedding guests to were available the night before to start celebrating. Our dinner was fabulous, served promptly (as was my request), beautifully plated, creative and delicious. All plates were served family style, and I wasn’t quite sure how that would work with the small plates – but The Twisted Tail kitchen knows their stuff. Trust them. I would definitely recommend this for a group of people getting to know each other. It fostered conversation and set everyone at ease. The groom commented that the amount of food was perfect. After-dinner guests began arriving for cocktails and the energy in the rooms (Upstairs: The Juke Joint and Club Room) was electric. The soon-to-be-married couple had a blast. Our event was scheduled to end promptly at 9pm, when the rooms would be open to the public and a terrific blues band began warming up at that time. Many lingered, danced, or just hung out longer to enjoy more of the evening. The front-of-house staff was welcoming, knowledgeable, attentive yet not intrusive. Juliet, our coordinator, was professional throughout the planning process and remained in contact with me throughout the evening to ensure that I was as happy as our guests. Frankly, she was amazing! Perhaps it is standard in big city restaurants, but I was surprised to learn that a 2.5% administration fee is added to your bill if you are paying by credit card on the night of the event. This is not something commonly done in our home region. As long as you are aware of this, as it is written in the policies of the contract when you are completing arrangements, it is workable.

Thanksgiving day weekend

By evelynpadil |

First time there, lived in this neighborhood all my life, and have moved away for a few years to Miami. I have been to almost every club, bar and restaurant story mce 1980s, decided to stay in an AirBNB near by, but was sadly disappointed in the customer service, the young lady at the door was very polite, food okay but inside staff needed a day off.

Nice decor, live music, good food, happening spot...

By RichC250 |

Nice place in Society Hill, 1/2 block off South Street. 2 levels, sharp and clean decor, good music-many live performers. Solid food on the menu and a good mix of dishes for all tastes. Full bar and many specialty drinks. Friendly knowledgeable bar staff.

South St Restaurant

By Ali W |

I went with friends for restaurant week which included a four course meal. I started with the $15 cocktail flight that included three 5 ounce cocktails. Pretty tasty, it included an apple pie moonshine, pear cucumber drink, and a warm cider whiskey with whipped cream. The meal itself was mediocre. My starter of grilled clams was fishy and barely cooked, the pork belly was mostly fat and not that flavored. The appetizer crawfish mac&cheese was absolutely amazing and I would go back just for this. The BBQ ribs were juicy and well flavored. The entree strip steak was forgettable and very chewy but the shortribs were juicy and paired awesomely with the fried egg. The dessert beignets was also freshly fried and I would come back just for this dish. The panna cotta with blood orange was also very refreshing and pleasant.

Chef's Tasting

By tat52015 |

Sea bass was shockingly delicious. One of the best servings of fish I have ever had. Tasting menu provided a lot of good variety and interest while dining. Seems like for the money we got about the same value through the tasting menu as if we had just ordered off the menu so next time we may just order a la carte. Live music upstairs was an added bonus to then of a good meal. seating on stools were a bit uncomfortable for a big meal and the atmosphere was casual but fine for dining.

Awesome food and Entertainment

By Patricia Walsh |

Small restaurant and music venue. This is our go-to place when we have a Saturday night of together! We usually get lots of apps to share and are always impressed with the food. Our servers are always knowledgeable and helpful. Usually a good band, sometimes a great band (Vanessa Collier!) and a small but cozy dance floor!

Worth a try...

By dave911nj |

Awesome experience. Great service. Amazing drinks. Wagyu beef tartar, chorizo taco, hanger steak, and fried chicken were amazing.

Find a real restaurant

By Datl |

The food was just barely ok. Certainly not worth the price. The lamb chops were cold and overcooked. The trout was ok but was farm fish, so it basically didn't have any taste. The apple salad was too tart. The beet appetizer was good. The beignets were horrible. Just balls of uncooked dough. It's a drinking and party place. Not a nice dining experience.

Meh, don't order takeout on Thanksgivingf.

By G M |

Gee, where to start. I live nearby Twisted Tail & hadn't had a chance to try their food so decided to order some Thanksgiving takeout. Ham, mac&cheese, Southern cornbread dressing, Caesar salad and pecan mini-pie. To satrt with I have a hip problem at the moment which makes it difficult and painful to walk, stand & sit on stools, so I waited until after the pick-up time so it would be ready. Not ready and I waited about 20-30 more minutes.1 ⭐for service Okay, that's over & hoping the food would make up for it. Nope. Everythung that was supposed to be warm was cold & everything that was suppopsed to be cold was warm. The ham was tough around the edges but soft & tasty in the middle; mac&cheese just needed more of something? and the Southern cornbred dressing/stuffing was not bad, although a side of some kind of gravy would have been nice to take the edge off dry. Pecan pie tasted like the recipe maybe came off the bag of pecans from the grocery store. Oh and if you like rolls or bread with a meal, you'll need to bring your own or think about ordering that when you put in your order. 2 ⭐⭐s ONLY because of the ham. Please make note this is one Thanksgiving take-out meal. However, when you've been open 13 years there are things you should have figgued out by now. Like how busy you might be on Thanksgiving,& meaning knowing how much food & staff you might need. Maybe more cooks and staff working on take-out in order to have orders ready & warm/cold & ready to eat. After all it's not like diners who just walk in the door & order; you have weeks to prepare with take-out orders. Hire more staff or put everyone on that day's schedule. Restaurant work is not the kind of job where you can depend on having holidays off.

Absolutley Perfect, Elegant Meal

By Bob P |

We visited the Twisted Tail upon a recommendation of our son, and we were thrilled that we did! From the corn on the cob soaked in buttermilk, to the Suckling Pig entrée to the numerous varieties of Bourbon, the Twisted Tail is one of the best meals we've had in recent years. The atmosphere is spot on, the location is worthy of the best sightseers and the mixologists were friendly and knowledgeable. Definitely planning a return visit!!

Great place!

We were here with a large group so that may have something to do with the less than stellar review. The service was extremely slow and portions very small. The place was charming inside.

Tasty With A Twist!

By Amanda B |

We stopped by for dinner on a Saturday evening and shared several small plates and appetizers. Everything we tried from the Grill was exceptional, especially the most tender octopus I've tasted in years. The ribs were perfect - juicy and falling off the bone. We will be back to try the full sized entrees in the near future and have already book brunch here with friends coming in from out of town. The building is really cool - all brickwork and dim lighting. The staff were all super friendly and helpful. I would not hesitate to recommend to anyone who was to try something different for a very reasonable price.

Good bar food and atmosphere

By 977michaelr2 |

We have gone back to the twisted tail on several occasions. It is a bit noisy but this is what you would expect of a "bar atmosphere". The food is very good, the wait staff is attentive and in general it is enjoyable.

Really a great place here. I was picking up my fiance from the airport and loking for a late night place to have soem drinks, good food andlive music and certainly found it all here! The crawfish macncheese was really great. Drinks were great, music was great, fun crowd. A really cool place for fun, food, and drinks. It was a great date night!

INVENTIVE MENU, GREAT MUSIC

By S R |

Went to the Phila. Flower Show today and wanted to try a different restaurant for lunch before leaving the city. Many restaurants are closed on Mondays or do not open until 4 or 5 pm. My friend and I found a JEWEL in the Twisted Tail. I started with the Honey Crisp Apple salad tossed with Brussels sprouts and cider vinaigrette - it was light, crisp, refreshing and the flavors are a perfect compliment. It was "outdone" by my friend's appetizer: Roasted Carrots & Burrata with candied pecans and rosemary honey - amazing! I ordered the fried flounder sandwich with capers (nice touch); my friend ordered the fried chicken sandwich (one of their biggest sellers). Both were excellent. The menu is inventive and eclectic. They offer an enormous selection of cheeses. It was difficult to decide what to order. I wish I could have ordered 1/2 of each item.

Great little apot

By kco84 |

Great food, great service, great menu. If you’re looking for a twist on some of the best comfort food this is the place to go. 4 of is went and all ordered different dishes and sides. We picked as each other’s food a bit and no one had anything that was less than an 8 out of 10. The atmosphere is lovely, rustic with a dash of modern. Lovely, lovely spot.

Enjoyed the TT very much!

By jbr318 |

This was my first visit. The restaurant and bar were very cozy with an extremely young (twenty-somethings), local and loud crowd. The only negatives were the long wait for our reserved table and the frequent screw-ups by the hostesses (repeatedly telling us that we were next, or that a particular table would be ours, and then taking other people first to our designated table). Very frustrating experience. The food, however, was excellent. I had cauliflower flatbread and fried chicken. I loved them both. I tasted several other dishes brought to the table and liked them all. Our server was extremely professional and accommodating. Once seated, the rest of the experience was quite enjoyable. I suggest trying to get an earlier than usual reservation to avoid the wait and to improve your chances of finding a close and metered parking space.

Delightful!

By Don L |

Dinner with friends - first time for all four of us. Service was good; food was excellent. Fabulous array of bourbon, rye and scotch (it IS a whisky place!). Limited wine selection, but acceptable for the wine drinkers in our midst. Small plates were perfect size - flatbread with fiddleheads was to die for; blue point oysters superb; gnocci was "the best ever" declared one; twin pork chop did not disappoint and the duck was perfectly finished. We were too early for music, but will definitely will return for another great meal and some blues.

great time with a group of friends!

By Alice H |

we went on Saturday night, with a group of friends (average age of 55!) and had a blast. there was a great band and we danced, played darts and just had fun. None of us had food, but there were lots of drinks and the wait staff was very attentive. will go again.

Such a gem

By IAMMINDFULL I |

Was picking up my partner from the airport and was looking for a fun place to have drinks and some good food and live music and certainly found it all here! I made a reservation and we got a table upstairs which was perfect to listen to the live band which was great. Our waiter was spot on perfect. He knew the menu well and helped us to order. We decided on, since it was late, to order some appetizers for our dinner and share. It was really yummy. Everything was great. The crawfish macncheese was excellent. It is a very cool place and lots of fun happy people. It is very loud but what would you expect for live music?! Highly recommend this place when in Philly. Great food, great service, great drinks, great atmosphere. Great date night with my sweetheart!

New Manager is a joke

By Thomas D |

It's really a shame that the Manager is so disgusting. I visited last night June 24th. I witnessed the manager berating his employees and neglecting customers. After all the bad press the area has you would think he would act more professional. Darn shame the food and music live band we're great!

Brilliant Concept. Great Execution. All This and Bourbon Too

By TommyBoy94 |

This Bourbon Juke Joint (Their words) is pretty much everything we love in a restaurant. Creative menu, availability of small plates for sharing, casual and very attractive inside (A unique blue-gray interior and wooden tables...very easy on the eye). The Britsh owner took the time to chat with us about his philosophy of travel, among other things, (Why travel to these all-inclusive resorts? Better to go someplace where you can get out and watch the local people...hear their story...tell them yours.). And he explained the overall concept of the restaurant as a place where, like his travel philosophy, people feel welcome to stay and develop a sense of comradery. To wit: Once done dining (or even before or instead of) why not head upstairs and join the house band? Bring your instruments and play alongside them or just listen). The food is a flight of brilliant ideas, but not so fancy as to be inaccessible. And while the food ideas take flight, how about a flite of great bourbons to accompany the meal? it is possible to order larger entrees but Barbara and I love appetizers and small plates which also give us the opportunity to work through a good portion of the menu. We did not sample the tempting Artisinal Cheese Boards, only because we can only eat so much. (Never mind...next time). One group of small plates are done on the Charcoal grill. Here we tried grilled corn on the cob, lamb balls (Barbara loved them, even though she is not a lamb fan) and sausage with peaches and pickled mustard seed). Of the small plates, the Rice balls were my favorite (Country ham, cheese and smoked mustard) and the aged, thinly sliced Country Ham ( aged Benton for us) on crispy bread wedges was a close second. Deserts were brilliant, too. And, oh yes, the corn bread on a skillet! We could not get enough of that. We'll be back for sure and we'll try to bring some friends along. Some of them may even play instruments. Thanks.

We came here whilst the Pope was visiting Philly and it was a delight. Great service form smiling staff, Interesting food and good atmosphere. Recommended. We will certainly be back. Thnak you.

Would go back...

By Mark R |

Cool menu. Very good drinks and food. Waiter was very efficient and friendly enough. Loved the crayfish mac and cheese. After dinner, we went upstairs where they had a blues/jazz band playing. They were tight, excellent horns and good tunes. Drinks upstairs were very good.

a lovely winter ambience

By marcopolopaloalto |

Dark interior and live soft guitar music make for a warm ambience . Nice that there’s a happy hour menu from 4-6, with a bartender drink of the day. The complimentary popcorn is delicious as well as the fig salad with blue cheese. The Shishito peppers also delicious. My only critique is that I wish there were more vegetarian options.

We wont be back

By ann s |

We attended a group event, on a Friday night, at this restaurant. The upstairs room was big and had high seats. Very difficult to sit comfortably. Menu had food that we could not identify by name, the waitress had to explain each one to us. Some food came cold, not everyone was served together and the entire meal took us over 2 hrs to get thru. Not enough staff to get the group serviced at the same time. Several vegetables were served family style but were not brought to the table until after we were done with the main course. The corn bread was served stuck to wax paper and didn't come apart easily. Save you rmoney and eat somewhere else.

Wow!

By Ani Jones |

Such a great time here. Easter brunch was amazing, and made the holiday and family time, wonderful. We even commented how we should make this a ritual for us. Brunch was a buffet of anything and everything! The spread started with bagels with smoked salmon, cream cheese or butter, capers, red onions, tomatoes, and egg whites or egg yolks. Chocolate croissants, salad, parfaits, shrimp cocktail, omelette station, fruit, beignets, carving station with lamb and prime rib, fried chicken, waffles, cheesy grits, pastries, bacon, sausage, and so much more I'm forgetting. It was all so delicious. I think I got up 6 times or so, hubby did the same, and our picky five year old even ate! The service was spectacular. Everyone was so attentive and made sure we were ok. Will definitely go back for dinner, next time we are in Philly. I am sure we will be there for brunch as well!

A pleasant event venue

The space upstairs proved well suited for the event we attended. The bar was efficient, and creative.

Regrettably almost inedible food

By RaiDoc |

We went for Brunch and the restaurant was totally empty...at least we thought that the chef would concentrate on providing great food. Not so. Our Boar hash was meant to be with parsnip roots and yet was overflowing carrots. The sauteed potatoes were almost raw and inedible, the boar was microscopic and when found was almost entirely made of fat, and the coffee was burned. The server asked her how our food was, we told her politely and she just said "oh sorry you didn't enjoy it, I'll tell the chef"...and then left. Not a good start for what we understand is a brand new Restaurant. Possibly the bar scene at night is their forte?

Delicious Food served Family Style

By Stephanie A |

I was traveling with my teenage son and wanted to take him somewhere for dinner where he could try something different. Twisted Tail fit the bill. We chose the 7 course dinner and enjoyed every bite. Each plate was beautifully presented and the food was prepared to perfection. Our waitress was friendly and very helpful with the menu. The atmosphere was very cool. It was a Saturday night so the bar area started to get pretty loud around 10pm, but before then it was pretty quiet.

Right off South Street

By Elizabeth D |

I Googled the best places to eat, and the Twisted Tail came up! And now I see why! Great food and atmosphere. We visited on a Sunday early afternoon. We sat inside but you can dine Al fresco. Food was clean and delicious, good mix and flavors...

Outstanding for Group Events

By LauraC |

We had a group event in the upstairs room. The food, service, drinks, and room layout were all outstanding. Multiple people commented on how good the fried chicken, pulled pork, corn bread, & beignets were. The wait staff was friendly yet efficient. We highly recommend the Twisted Tail!

Beignets!

By Venture374181 |

This place is a great family environment because they serve family style. I jag the duck salad pretty much and is was amazing. I finished with Beignets and they were different than traditional Beignets but great. Small like hush puppies with cinnamon sugar and a beat dipping sauce. Specializing in whisky I did not partake but other drinks were great. I would come back.

Nice area of town

By Mona D |

Enjoyed my corn soup so much it was delish. The shrimp was ok and the tomato and Barata cheese wad good but the tomatoes could of had more flavor. We sat outside and it was very enjoyable

A drink with an education on the sidewalk

By Golfdick |

After a great dinner at Wister my wife and I walked down to this fine establishment. We sat down outside and were greeted by a real professional by the name of Anthony. What followed was an education of bourbon, whiskey, and ryes, just a real treat. Would highly recommend establishment.

Blues and Booze

By vam912 |

Very interesting menu that includes one of the most extensive whiskey lists i've ever seen. I was there on a Friday night and there was a live band playing upstairs. Friendly wait staff and good service. I would definitely eat there again.

Small plates experience. Service was excellent. Upstairs very loud where dinning. Quality of food excellent. Ribs par boiled but tasty. Expensive for amount of food. Drinks excellent.

great vibe, excellent food

By preventinfecti0n |

Very casual, with good bar scene and live music upstairs and downstairs (loud up there, acoustic down). Mainly small plates, but very well chosen. Especially enjoyed the cured ham selections and cheese plates, as well as the charbroiled quail. A good place to go if you're on your own

Excellent cheese board & fun unique cocktails!

By BrandieTampa |

Some friends and I enjoyed a few drinks here during the Fourth of July weekend. Friendly waitstaff, unique & delicious cocktails and a fabulous cheeseboard selection!! Highly recommend!!

Wonderful food & libations, fun venue, & great music. Don't come for anything else; this is not a place for a quiet conversation. ;-)

Great outing for two

By abbyrturner |

Visiting from out of town and staying at a near by hotel, a friend and I were excited to try out Twisted Tail. We had a wonderful time! We drank of the specialty cocktail menu, and though one of the cocktails was not quite to our liking, all of the others were delicious and festive. The food was great, and good proportions. We finished with dessert, and they were amazing! We had a lovely time, and the atmosphere was perfect for a quite night out between two friends.

Excellent stop for a beverage!

By Fyrdawg |

We stopped here because we saw boubon and juke joint on the outside of the building. We were pleasantly surprised the first night we stopped. Friendly staff, fairly priced drinks, a nice atmosphere, and very good entertainment! The decond night we wondered upstairs to find another greta space with tables, a large bar, and a relaxing area with couches, chairs, a shuffleboard table, and a fireplace. We didn't try the food, but definitely will on the next visit!

Great Blues and atmos

By Bob D |

Philadelphia has never been known as a great Blues town, no real legacy of Delta Blues in the City of Brotherly Love. But Twisted Tail, a self described Bourbon Bar and Juke Joint, serves up great live Blues in an attractive venue. Went there last night with about 10 others, got a table at the 3rd floor bar level, to hear The Scissermen, a Delta-style Blues band led by a talented slide guitarist. Before long, we were dancing to rockin' Blues. Attentive good service and good Bourbon and craft beer selection. We didn't eat there so I can't comment on the food anltjough I have heard from friends who have dined there that it is good Southern Cuisine. So if you find yourself in Philly and harken for the Blues, thus is the place to be.

Underwhelming

By Tara P |

I was here two years ago and it was amazing. Just left tonight and it isn't what it used to be. I've had better fried chicken at KFC. Seriously. It was dry and undersea aimed. The red drum was yummy but cold like it'd been sitting under a heat lamp for 30 mins. To top it off, their parking garage recommendation is a full $10 more expensive than advertised on the website. Won't be back.

WHAT A GREAT PLACE!

By Antonella Jakin |

We went almost a month ago and everything was delicious and a great experience! they have a great variety of food and the drinks are amazing! It is a cozy restaurant and my friends and I are more than happy with the service!

So-so ...

By Cuesta44 |

Popped in for drink and quick bite.. service was attentive although just one member of staff behind the bar on a busy Sunday afternoon .. ordered a couple of Pastrami sandwiches which were delicious !! Big gripe ... if you’re selling yourself as bourbon and whiskey house make sure you have a bottle of whatever there is on the menu !! Ordered a Sazerac (and requested a Sazerac rye that they didn’t have any wtf ?!?!) but had it made with Bulleit.. was ok. The Smokestack Lightening however was extremely good ... service a little slow but staff were great ...

Great spot!

By Dbldn11ias |

Met a date at the Twisted Tail on a cool but sunny early Summer Sunday, and had a lovely time. The hostess was lovely, and handled a challenging situation with an over-served, troubled patron walking past messing with the outside tables and helping himself to silverware with grace and professionalism. An impressive first impression. The physical space itself is lovely upscale Southern, and the music was great throughout. I grabbed a seat at the bar, and once my date arrived we decided to just dine there. Both bartenders did a good job, and the food came quickly. We started with bloody marys, which were excellent and had good flavor throughout. The beer list was impressive, and they had a Philly Beer Week special going with head to head flights of Dogfish (60, 90 & 120) against Lagunitas (IPA, Dogtown, Waldo Special). My only knock on the joint is that the menus weren't updated, and when the bartenders said some of the "specials" from the flights were now on draft they couldn't identify what had been replaced. So ordering became challenging beer wise. A minor complaint. My lovely dining companion got the recommended bacon and eggs, which she loved, and I thought the bacon tamale was absolutely fantastic. Great flavor, beautiful presentation, original and different. Great spot. We had a lovely time and will be back for sure. Thanks for a memorable and great meal!

Great Thanksgiving experience

By 977michaelr2 |

We went to The Twisted Tail for Thanksgiving. It was a price fixed menu withnmanynoptions. The entrée was great the salad was great. I would recommend this restaurant for any future events. They are also having a New Year's eve event

Great Find!

By wlmwlm |

Great find in the middle of South Street. Service was fast and extremely pleasant. Went on a Saturday at 5pm for 3 with no reservations, they were able to accommodate us (though the restaurant does get packed later). We got liver mousse, ribs, kale salad, cheese plate, cornbread, duck confit. Note: menu is "new american" so definitely best for those willing to explore new items. Okay for kids if they aren't picky but not great if you want traditional items for children

Just ok

By Rachel M |

We heard nothing but great things about this place, but it was pretty disappointing. My husband and I ordered about four or five small plates, and nothing was that great- except the octopus. That was delicious. Everything else was just, meh- not great and a little over priced. I don't even really remember what we had, and we were there only three days ago. My manhattan was $12 for a glass of ice with some bourbon splashed over it, and while the waiter said it was named the best manhattan in the city, I *highly* doubt that can be accurate- I had had an awesome manhattan at Continental earlier in the day, for only $9 bucks. I don't think they even had music the night we were there- something about a private party upstairs, or the music wasn't starting until 11pm or something crazy like that. The whiskey list was just ok- either you already have them on your shelf at home so why would you pay those prices for a 1-oz pour, or they are so obscure why would you pay those prices for something that could be terrible? I didn't get it. And a flight of basic middle of the road bourbons is nothing to right home about. Overall, we were not impressed with the food or drinks, we we left and went to South Restaurant on North Broad- which was amazing.

weekday lunch

By Brittany S |

A co worker and I recently dined here for lunch. The place is very large but we sat outside b/c it was a gorgeous day. The menu is a bit limited for lunch but we both enjoyed our meals very much. They have a nice bourbon selection/cocktail list as well. It's located at 2nd and south- decent amount of street parking as well. Service was great- I would definitely go back and recommend checking it out!

Would return

By Chris S |

We went here for restaurant week 1/17. Four courses for $35 is usually a no brainer for us. I went with the octopus , catfish tacos, pork shank and poached pears. All the portions were larger than I expected. The octopus was very good, well seasoned and cooked perfectly. Catfish tacos, while the fish itself was under seasoned the chow-chow made up for it when eaten together. The pork shank was served with "roasted mushrooms" I think they really should have called them "smoked" mushrooms as they were VERY smoky. I personally love smoky flavors but if my wife would have ordered she would have probably been disappointed in the description as she does not like a ton of smoke. Poached pear with ice cream was nothing really special but it was good. Service was good and we would probably return.

Delicious food!

By Joseph G |

We were fortunate enough to get a sidewalk table on a warm Saturday evening when the place was literally packed. We shared the following plates: Grilled asparagus salad, Crispy flatbread, Grilled harpoon-caught swordfish and Grilled Hangar steak. Everything was well prepared, using top ingredients and simply delicious! Service was courteous and efficient; prices are in line with the quality of food served.

"Great Music and Southern Food - That's a Good Friday"

By TRAVELLIFE69 |

I decided to treat my husband to this place, because there was going to be a live Blues band. When I told a couple of friends where I was going, they raved about the food at The Twisted Tail. Dennis our server was really a good dude. This place has like a hundred different type of Whiskey and Bourbon. Please ask your server for help and suggestions. We ordered the grilled octopus, flatbread with salmon, fried okra and Cod fish entrée. To top it off we had pecan pie. We had a blast here.

Disappointing

By Kevin B |

This was such a disappointing restaurant. My friends and I were in Philly for a reunion and we came here for dinner. My mac and cheese looked great, but was surprisingly bland tasting and was very disappointing. My friends all had a similar reaction to their food and we didn't enjoy the food at all. Furthermore, we were as far as possible from the band that night, but still couldn't hear each other over them and we just didn't have a good experience overall.

Historic restaurant with a unique menu and a great atmosphere

By Nick C |

We've eaten here on several occasions and the food is generally excellent. Their Crawfish Mac 'N' Cheese is a great dish. Very good beer selection and some unique cocktails make this an attractive choice when visiting the Society Hill/South Street area. Pretty spacious restaurant in a very historic building. Our only concern was that our assigned waitress was assigned to too many tables, getting her attention was a bit of an effort.

Great for Sunday brunch

By cic4cia |

Quietly tucked away off of South Street, this restaurant is loaded with southern charm. I'd love to go back at night when things are a bit more lively and there is a live band playing.

Excellent food and presentation

By bige208 |

We had a cheese board with toasted pecans, apple butter, and ham. Beautifully presented and unusual. The waitress was extremely knowledgeable and nice. Enjoyable evening.

Great, really great food - not so great service, maybe Covid-jitters?

By SueSheeNJ |

Went for a birthday dinner, place was not busy, but service was slow, very slow. Huge array of bourbons, good specialty drink menu. But menus are via QR reader and were not updated. We noticed items on other tables that werent on menu, asked server and he brought one printed menu that was very different from the virtual menu. Thats disappointing. Apps- Ribs (great) tomato salad (really great) and Whipped ricotta (good, little pricey) but each came out at different times, which was awkward. Dinner: hanger steaks (excellent) fried Chicken (tasty) and shrimp/grits (as good as NOLA - no kidding) but again, food came out at different times, steaks first. then later my shrimp but the fried chicken didnt come out for 15 mins? side dishes (cornbread and Crawdad mac/cheese) also came out very late - no sense of serving the table as one. staff seemed really confused and had no idea when food would come. Manager apologozed and comped the fried chaicken and sent out Beignets (excellent) and rhubarb crumble ala mode (also fantastic) . I appreciate the effort to make up for the service failures. I'd give this place another chance on service, food was really someting

Bourbon and Beer

By stephen t |

I have been wanting to write about this place for awhile. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Ally, Joe, Cory and Patrick know their Bourbon's and Beers, but this is more than that, the food has a nice southern twist and they make some nice mixed drink specialties.

Philly does it again.....One more fabulous restaurant

By travelofoodies |

Absolutely deserving 5 stars for their food, delicious, nothing to complain, except maybe the service which was a tad bit slow, but guessing that it was a beautiful Saturday evenibg, with lot of people enjoying dinner out it was something to be expected. So they don't loose any stars for that. We t with hubby and a bunch of friends & since their food is tapas styles, we got to savor and enjoy many dishes including desserts and coffee. We ordered a wide range of dishes from vegetarian, seafood, chicken, steaks, tartare and everything was amazing, can't wait to go there again. Oh just an heads up their wine tours n whiskey/ scotch shots are very, very small so be ready to spend some extra dollars on your drinks

Family Style Dining and Great Blues!

By filozof |

We came here on a recommendation. There was a lovely band playing blues music in the background. The restaurant was not very busy though there were a few people by the bar which made it lively. We had great service and the food was delicious. The portions are relatively small and our waiter made us aware that it was family style dining and shared. We ordered several things and were not disappointed! Can warmly recommend the short ribs and the crab mac and cheese! The fried chicken was the only disappointing thing we had. Would definitely go back!

Could be better

By jerry b |

Bar stools are uncomfortable for any one under five five. If it is trying to be a music scene it needs to embrace it and have a better sound system. Variety of beers is good for what it is...a yuppie bar.

Nice place!

By kiko199 |

We had a really nice dinner: we had a griled octopus and a Lamb meatballs as staters , then a rally good fish as main course and duo pork that was really good as well. Nice atmosphere, really good live music. A lot of choice of beers and whiskey. The dessert was ok. I really suggest this place!

Good Appetizers & Drinks

By PhillyShaney |

I went to the Twisted Tail after hitting a few other places earlier in the evening. I was having a cool evening with friends and we happy to find this cool place to bring our night to a close. It was super crowded, but we hung out and stood real close to a few people sitting at the bar and they finally got the hint and we grabbed their seats....LOL Although it was busy, the bar keep and was patient and friendly. I enjoyed the energy of the patrons and I think it was because it was different age groups here and that was a nice balance. We ordered some appetizers and drinks and both we pretty good. I had the lamb meatballs and friends had the cheese plate. I would go back to really enjoy the atmosphere when it is less crowded. I also like the neighborhood.
