OMG.....not for the fain of heart!

By Tara M |

Where to start? From the outside you know that this is not going to be the typical "cocktail bar". It's kind of grungy and a little down and out on the outside....but this St. John 's and there are tons of hidden gems, so you walk in...realizing with each step that this is not one of them. I can't review the Chinese restaurant part , but I dare you to try it. The "lounge" is fun in a touristy "yikes" sort of way.....but we were there during "happy" hour. (I.e.:daylight) The bartender, a woman was very nice, drinks strong . The crowd was interesting, profane, yet nice and welcoming...While this wasn't for me, it's might be a super fun place for people who want to go for the ambience of the old St John's /Portland that I remember from the 80's/90's (go quick, this place is prime for a renovation ).

I'm the waitress in the evenings. Monday, Tuesday and Friday nights

We sat in the bar section unaware of the well lit spacious restaurant area. If I brought my mom along I would sit there, but dark bar atmosphere is my jam Great atmosphere, GREAT drinks! and food I will return for again & again. Tammy, you made my first visit memorable.. thank you for your graciousness & our fleeting friendship. Highly recommend.

Stopped here for some dinner to go. This restaurant has been here in north Portland got decades. The food is always good and the prices too. My meal was large, had leftovers for lunch the next day.

I love the old retro look of this building

I haven't been to St Johns before and came to take photos of the st Johns Bridge and Cathedral park. After doing this I came up to historic area and walked around and spotted this classic looking building. Ioved the retro lounge look it had outside. And just had to have a look inside. It was a Saturday afternoon when I walked in. not many customers. I ordered a beer and played a little video poker. A John Wayne Western was playing on the TV screen at the bar. Wow, now that was unexpected surprise. I sat for a little while and watched the Duke while I finished my beer. felt relaxing in here.
