Food Quality Has Fallen

By txhcmtg |

This has been the go to place for good Mexican food for many years. However, there seems to be some recent changes that are not so good. The food quality has fallen drastically in the last few months and its now less pleasurable to dine here. They still offer great service and even better margaritas.

Still love Tia's!

By Brenda S |

Last night was our 2nd annual reunion of a group of us that started working together at "Brookhollow", near 610 and 290. We eventually all moved to other work locations or moved out of state and lost touch. Anyway, back in 1987, Tia's was our favorite lunch and happy hour spot. Fast forward to 2016, they still provide great service, have low prices and delicious food, and excellent frozen margaritas (watch out, they're deceptively strong!). We arrived at 6:00pm and although the parking lot was already packed, we did not have a problem getting a table. They were also very gracious despite the fact that we "camped" at our table until they closed at 10:30. When we checked out, the person at the cash register could not split the check...so note to self, next time ask for separate checks up front (which they will do). Overall -- highly recommend!

Fantastic food, music, and margaritas

By TexaagonianTraveller |

Fantastic Food! My family and I have been coming to this place for almost 30 years. The food is beyond compare, and they have the BEST margaritas in town! Kids love their queso. If you are lucky the band will visit your table with Mexican/Texan folk tunes -- always excellent guitarists. Amazing food, amazing atmosphere, good prices. 10/10, absolutely recommend.

Great Mexican Food

By Chris D. |

Great Mexican food at a great price. Service was a little slow, but it was very busy. Servers were polite, management was on the house floor helping with the flow. I definitely recommend and will go back again.

Since...forever

By schwettina |

As long as I can remember this local place has been a haven for me and my family. I have fond memories of my grandmother who always wanted to come here. The chips are thin and crispy and warm. The salsa is had just enough kick. Food is great and always fresh. They will make things to your order. I always ask them the cook the onions really well with a fajita order. And you can ask to mix up the enchiladas to your taste. Most of the waiters have been there a long time and are always quick to smile and offer a genuine "hola Amiga" when I go in. Gotta say the margaritas are awesome too!

Great food and margaritas!

By jmoldmixon |

This is one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants in our neighborhood! The food is delicious and plenty is provided. The service is not always on the spot, but that is probably because of how busy they stay. They are always kind, conscientious, and capable, though. Be careful of the margaritas. They go down easily but pack one heck of a punch! They can sneak up on you in a hurry...

RUN FROM THIS PLACE

By Sarah M |

I haven't been here in at least 5 years. Last memory is that the food was great so I invited a group with me. I should have believed what I read on here. The food is below Taco Bell quality. (Sorry Taco Bell) Really: They should SAVE YOUR MONEY, EAT AT HOME!

Loyal customers looking past poor food

By Terry M |

I have eaten there twice with a co-worker who has eaten there for years. The first time I had enchiladas, the second time I had beef fajitas. I was disappointed both times and will not be back. The good things - fresh chips and homemade flour tortillas. The bad things - salsa that tastes like a can of pureed tomatoes warmed up with no perceptible spices or peppers added, fajitas that were dry and chewy, chicken enchiladas with little flavor. I believe this restaurant probably had good food years ago, but everyone's memories of this place are a lot better than the current food being served. The waiter taking the order was reinforced by other staff, but the waiter himself was inattentive.

Retirement Party

By rcscott2016 |

Attended a friend's retirement party at Tia Maria's. The service was great, the beer was cold and the food provided for the attendees was good.

Outstanding value!

By Jim B |

Good family style Mexican food at very affordable prices. I had a full enchilada plate plus coffee for under $12 including the tip!

Old School TexMex

By Rob E |

Tia Maria’s is now one of my favorite Mexican restaurants. I hope they are this good every time. This was my first visit. This is how I remember good texmex tasting growing up (late 70’s-early 80’s). Their salsa is served hot which is usually not my preference, but it’s really good. I like mild salsas. The chips were fresh and light. I don’t like taco boat shells, but that was an easy fix with a homemade tortilla (made it into a soft taco). The cheese enchiladas were the bottom line most important criteria in my assessment. These are the enchiladas I look for and remember finding much more common year’s ago. This is a restaurant that represents how I believe a TexMex restaurant should be. As you can see, I’m extremely impressed and grateful to have found them. If they are consistent, they earned a new, regular customer. Time will tell, and so will I.

Great lunch menu- excellent food

By Gary C |

Great little Mexican restaurant off 290/610. Excellent Carne Guisada / Cheese Enchiladas/ Queso- very reasonable priced lunch menu - lots of great choices/ friendly service. One of my favorite lunch spots.

Pleasantly surprised :)

By BudgetFrog |

We were out driving and decided we wanted Mexican for lunch and happened across Tia's. It seemed a little run down and inside was a bit gloomy. But the place was packed which is always a good sign! And we were pleasantly surprised. We had free corn chips and salsa on our table within literal seconds of being seated, and the very funny and friendly server got us drinks immediately. There were lots of yummy things to choose from including good specials, and we ended up getting two entrees and a 'fajitas for 2' special to share between all four of us. Well the food was yummy and plentiful and we all ate until we were over full and then took the leftovers home! Great food and great value! Toilets clean - only downer was basic and dated decor - but you can easily overlook that. Highly recommend :)

Fun family atmosphere and true Tex-Mex

By april s |

This is perfect for family and friends. The food is not fancy but always tasty and the portions are generous. Our favorites are chile relleno, carne guisada, fajitas and queso flameado. Service is fast and friendly and the prices are still quite reasonable. It is a neighborhood institution.

Food is not that great, rude hostesses

By Kswiss |

When you first walk in you will find a group of ladies who look at you like they are constipated and need to take a poop. I asked for a booth because we had more people coming and the lady rolled her eyes at me. They were all extremely rude and not professional at all. Did not make my daughter and I feel welcome. The waiters are all friendly and do a good job. The food is not that great, my chicken was dry and unseasoned which is the case that happens every time I go here and I will not go back. The tortillas were a little crunchy and hard, not soft like they are supposed to be. If you want good food and friendly staff who don’t look like they just shoved a tampon up their butt, then go to Los Cucos. Much better!

Great place for good food, service.

By travelr1961 |

My family and I go to Tia Maria's on Sundays, about once a month or so. We always have good, prompt service and very good food. The servers are always attentive to our needs and try to please us when we have any request. The prices are reasonable. I usually have the Tia Maria's Special, which has a little of just about everything: fajita taco, flauta, guacamole, chile relleno, enchilada, rice, beans, etc. Just one tip, they bring you nonstop baskets of chips and salsa (delicious), so it's easy to fill up before you entree arrives, especially when you're so hungry you dig in with a vengeance. I plan to continue going there many times.

Ok place

By sawsan22 |

sweet and comfortable atmosphere, below avarage flavor

Worth every penny

By Winglow |

Worth every pennyanytime we go in. Well I'm no fan of TVs while trying to eat, I would rather concentrate on the company I'm with, at least the food here is decent.

Laid back atmosphere, good service

By nwhoustontx |

A laid back friendly atmosphere. Good margaritas, cold beer, tasty chips and salsa, all at a good price. Illustrate recommend it to anyone anyday

Good luck to you if you chose to eat here

By Colleen S |

We used to be regular customers here, but stopped going when they reopened from the pandemic because the service was slow (and rude) and the food quality had deteriorated. However, we decided last night to give them another try. Our food was good and our waiter was attentive. However, we arrived at 8:30, received our food around 8:45, and when we asked for a second beer right around 9 PM (closing time), we were told by the manager, Hector, that they couldn't serve us because they were "closed". We felt rushed and packed up our food and left. On the way to our car, the security guard, a relative of the manager, asked why we were upset and we told him. He recommended that we speak to "Pedro" and he would "make it right". So this morning, we did speak to Pedro. We got a call back from Cindy (another manager, I assume) who apologized, but was full of excuses and reasons for the behavior of her manager. She also accused my husband of calling the manager a rude name, which didn't happen. You may also know that they offer complimentary ice cream. As we were leaving, my husband stopped to get some ice cream. The cones were in a box - not a dispenser - and had to be pulled out in a stack to pick one. This is not a great idea when COVID is still present, nor is it sanitary in the best of times. Further, the ice cream was basically liquid. My husband discussed this with Cindy, and she stated that they shut the machine down 30 minutes prior to closing to defrost it. Is this even safe? Does the ice cream reach a temperature that isn't healthy? She had no good reason for the cones being in the box and accessible to everyone's dirty hands. It's definitely safe to say that this is the last chance we'll give Tia Maria and good luck to those of you who choose to eat there.

Pleasantly surprised

By Trrhperry |

The place is a dive, but the food was great! I had fajitas. The vegetables were fresh and cooked just right. The guacamole was fresh and seasoned to perfection. I heard nothing but praise from the rest of my party who had enchiladas and burritos. If I ever travel to Houston again, I would go back despite the rundown establishment.

True TexMex

By Missy A |

A friend and I randomly stopped into Tia Maria's Restaurant & Cantina and we will visit regularly. The service, drinks, food and low prices were outstanding. I ordered cheese enchiladas & house margaritas - these are my standard comparison items for first visits to TexMex restaurants, all of which were great. My friend ordered flautas and ate every bite. We were stuffed after eating a delicious meal. They've been in business for 30 years and justifiably so.

Never again

By Djones328 |

We had a retirement luncheon here.. although it seemed chaotic at times, the orders were taken promptly and the food was brought out swiftly... all but mine... I had to mention to the waiter I was the only one without my food... the salsa was warm and taste like tomato paste.... I ordered the lunch taco al carbon... the meat was bland, the rice was dry and hard, and the beans were cold. No one around me enjoyed their lunch. The all had fajitas and said they were "just OK" at most... Several of us ended up with upset stomachs after the fact. I will never visit this place again

Excellent Service, Great Margarita's, Good Mariachi's, Good food

By AAHou |

We went to celebrate Astros' winning the World Series with family visiting from Miami. The waiter Enrrrrique was extremely friendly and entertaining. Service was excellent. Other waiters attended our table as well for chips, water, drinks, food, etc. Very impressed. Margarita's were tasty & strong. The Mariachi band came and played what we requested. It's a must do if you're there. Chips and Salsa was delicious. We all ordered fajita's...plentiful serving. Quality of food was ok. Little higher quality of beef in fajita and you would be a home run! We will visit again!

Rude customer service

By Debra C |

Got my husband food for his birthday. We have been going here for years. Even though we have moved out of the area. The greeter/cashier was so rude she ruined my day. From the time I entered to the time I left. She was extremely rude. For future reference don’t treat customers that way!

Busy but Great food

By B S |

We were led in and sat at four different tables before ending up at the bar. The staff was friendly enough but they were so busy that taking our order, from the bar, took almost 15 minutes. After taking our order; they brought the wrong order, twice but we eventually ended up with some really great food. The food, for the price, was so much that I had enough for two more meals. The drinks were not that great; watered down, but decent. Don't go to the place on a Friday-Sunday; as there is no happy hour and whats a bar with no happy hour prices or food.

Classic old-school Tex-Mex

By krepki |

I was passing through town and wanted some great Tex-Mex. Tia Maria's did not disappoint. Standouts included the fresh hot chips, the beef tamale and the cheese enchilada. Skip the bland cheese dip and order instead either the guacamole or fajita nachos as an appetizer, both of which were delicious on the day I went. Service was attentive. I will for sure come back if I have the chance.

Awsome Bar

By DAntropov |

Sat at there bar with a friend, The guy working behindthe bar was excellent. It is a 45 minute drive from my house but well worth going.

Tia Maria's

By martini2377 |

Food was great, speedy service. Restaurant isn't much to look at it, it's a little run down but that was fine by us since it was clean and food was delicious and reasonably priced

Great Mexican Food

By Sue H |

This not so little Mexican restaurant offers great food at very reasonable prices with excellent service. There salsa is very tasty and all food we have tried is also.

Amazing food

By Leigh B |

Even at noon, during the rush of lunch time, service was excellent and food was amazing! Highly recommend you make your way here!!

Over charged for items not received

By Lucy C |

We were over charged ton two different occasions when visiting this restaurant. They handled the situation poorly and without finesse. The food was not that good. We found a hair in one plate. Another plate had rice and beans that tasted days old. Would not recommend this place.

I'm addicted!

By Sunny D |

When I lived in Houston in the '90s I would frequent this place at least once a week: I was a college kid, broke and Tia's fit the bill for us. The food was great back then and the drinks were strong - everything pretty cheap! I moved away and returned to Houston in 2010. I have tried all the "upscale" Mexican restaurants (I can finally afford it:) and nothing has yet to compare to this place. We drive over 30 miles now and visit here at least twice a month. The mariachi band is fun, the food is always hot and exactly what we want and the service is outstanding!

LOVE THE QUESO!!

By Suzanne0226 |

I have been eating at this restaurant for at least 20 years . I always get the queso and a margarita. I always see people there that I grew up with and it makes you happy to see everyone still gathering here to eat. Friday nights are extremely busy ,but I've never had to wait more than 2 minutes for a table.

One of my most favorite Houston restaurants!

By Brenda S |

Four of us met at Tia’s for dinner on a Friday night and “camped out” from 6pm to 10:30pm when they close — as we had so much catching up to do. They always have great friendly service, excellent food, and wonderful (and strong) margaritas. My “go to” is always the Enchiladas Suizas (chicken). We first started coming here in 1987 when we all began our careers working together at Brookhollow (now torn down). A few years later we all moved on to other jobs, but recently we started meeting up here for our annual “reunions”. Their chips and warm salsa have not changed and remain our favorite. And amazingly some of the original servers are still working here. Really love this place and highly recommend for their delicious food, great prices, and friendly service. We have never had a bad visit. P.S. One person in our group drives all the way from Dallas just to meet up with us and eat at Tia’s - that’s how good it is!

Horrible food and service

By Emily B |

I ordered a couple combos and 32oz margarita on the rocks for pickup, instead they gave me a small margarita, disagreed with me for what I had paid for, then eventually handed me a frozen margarita with no apology. I got home to find they left out the rice and beans I paid extra for and the “chicken enchilada” was literally empty. Just a tortilla with sauce and iceberg lettuce. This place is trash. After $85 the only worthwhile part was the salsa.

Disappointing Menu for Vegetarians

By TNTechie |

I was very disappointed with this restaurant after the great reviews that I had read. I am a vegetarian and usually Mexican is a great choice for me but the only vegetarian items on the menu were cheese enchiladas and nachos, neither of these are the healthiest options. What happened to traditional bean burittos, bean tostadas, bean chalupas, garden quesidillas, vegetable fajitas.....I could go on and on with items I usually get at Mexican restaurants. I asked the waiter if they had a vegetarian menu and he pointed to one meal on the menu and that was it. He offered no other alternatives for us. We paid for our drinks and went somewhere else to eat.

Great food

By Tom G |

Every time we come to Houston we take time out to go to Tia's. The food is wonderful, the service is fantastic and very reasonable priced.

Before game meal

By 1CabanaBoy |

The restaurant is located across the street from the Houston ISD Dyer and Delmar Stadiums. We decided to have a before game meal since it was so close. The chips are fresh and good but the entries are not. The food is bland and not real TexMex food. The restaurant is large and the staff is very friendly. Sorry but, I can't recommend.

Keep going back!

By Donna C |

We visit this great mexican food restaurant at least once a week. Enjoy the margaritas and goot eats at a good price.

Large portions, ver well priced. GREAT service

By Ndubya |

Place was packed on a Sunday eve. First time there. Disappointed in lack of salsa choice. Always look for one extra spicy. Only one choice. Had chili rellenos. Huge portion, good flavor. Awesome service. Not the best food, but by far not the the worst. I worth the trip.

May have found my favorite Mexican restaurant in Houston

By NaturalizedTexan |

This restaurant is amazingly inexpensive and has good quality and quantity. The salsa was fantastic if you like it a little spicy. The Tex-Mex dinner I had was great. Almost as important, I did not fell like I was being rushed out the door. Can't make the determination that this is my favorite Houston Mexican restaurant just on one visit but it's up there.

Lunch

By John S |

One of my favorites. Always reliable tex mex. Very fast and friendly service. Great food at great prices.

Not on Houston's top 20...and I'm glad for it. More food for me!

By Osage2112 |

Tia's has been around for atleast 40 years. Their crowning glory is that they were open the DAY AFTER Ike, and served food (and thankfully Margaritas) until the gas in the generator ran out. The food can stand shoulder to shoulder with ANY on the Top 20, but is crafted better than most...and lack the hautiness of many. If you want to try Tex-Mex that has been kept hush-hush for decades...then try Tia's. I feel like I should not be writing this, and perhaps that is why there are ONLY two reviews posted. They do it right at Tia's.

Great for small or large groups

By Randy D |

Took my family there for a birthday celebration. There were 7 of us and we have visited Tia Maria's many times before but usually just 2 or 3 of us, so we were apprehensive on whether the food and service would still be good. In short, absolutely. The service was excellent and we never had to ask for anything. The food was great and served hot and correct. Oh and the bill for us 7 was around $83 +tip..which to me is a bargain, especially for what you get.

Had better

By emmam731 |

Went here because they have a trio that plays Friday night during dinner. I got the Shrimp a la plancha. Beans and rice were good but there were only a few over cooked shrimp and huge pile of onion and bell pepper on the fajita plate. I would say our table felt that the food was "ok". not horrible but definitely not "I can't wait to come back here" worthy. :( Kids plates were super good value. lots of food at cheap price. Margaritas were blah in my opinion.

It's the real deal

By holidaytraveller982 |

This is the kind of place that you must visit when you go to Houston. Not fancy but good authentic Mexican food at great prices. Mixed fajitas for two for $20! You will crave the food afterwards. A note for vegetarians: ask for the corn tortillas only (fried in vegetable oil) as the flour tortillas contain lard.

Good not great

By Kevin |

I had beef fajitas. The meat was good though the onions were a tad undercooked for my taste. Salsa is cooked and okay but not spicy enough for me. Very generous portion of guacamole relative to other restaraunts. I'd go back but wouldn't say it's the best I've had. Waiter was very good.

Great and good value

By minae995 |

Love this place, not gorgeous but I am Latin and this is very authentic and cheap.

Strong ritas and cheap food!

By Lianna B |

My husband and I live down the street and we love this place! Sometimes we wonder if we should go somewhere else because we eat there so much, but we know what we're getting every time we go. They don't have a great happy hour, but their food is verh reasonably priced so it evens out. We also love their salsa. Some bites have a kick, but overall it is a good medium house salsa served warm. The staff is extremely timely and we have never had to flag down a server or wait more than a coupel of minutes for service. The only down-side is that I wish they had a patio, but other than that it is a nice atmosphere, especially when the Mariachis play. I recommend the house margarita frozen or a bucket of the Coronitas for a drink. For food I would recommend one of the deluxe dinners (under $10) which gives you a great variety of their food options. Overall this is a great locally owned place that has consistent service and food every time we go.

went with a group

By Charlene F |

Food was good. Ambiance was average. Was there to celebrate a birthday, so sat in the back room. This was my first visit. My friends have been many times. I'm sure I'll be back.

Great Tex-Mex at an even better price.

By bandman15 |

Food was outstanding and service just as good. I will return when the opportunity arises. I had the beef ribs and flavor was great.

Great chips and salsa

By ~Michelle My Belle~ |

And that's about it. My chalupa plate was AWFUL. The guac salad that came on it was so minuscule I almost missed it! Never going back! Don't waste your time.

Great old Style TexMex

By captainsimos |

We have been looking for a very good old style TexMex restaurant and Tia Maria's is it. Great service, atmosphere, prices and oh yea, the food is great! Well worth your visit, you won't be disappointed.

Reasonable Prices

By Theemergency C |

Visited with family, great courteous staff. Prices are reasonable but have been eating there frequently and lately the taste is bland (even on my usual dishes). A bit of a surprise and this was one of my favourite restaurants :-(

Curbside order

By Sandra Ramirez |

Went to get dinner tonight during covid-19. Could not eat in so ordered curbside. A security guard came to our car took our order brought our food and on our way home to eat. It was fabulous we got everything we ordered it was still hot. I would recommend everyone going to get your food! Will do it again next week. Oh and also ordered a margarita got home and it was still frozen tastes same as if I would have drank it there.

Fresh taste

By Jacqueline F |

The food taste very fresh and the prices are affordable. Not too spicy at all. Service isn't very fast but super friendly

Convenient Lunch

By Shortknocer |

I was having my fleet vehicle inspected at the Firestone store next door and the manager suggested i have lunch here while I was waiting. I had the Friday lunch special and the food and the price were both right!

Service was good. Food not so good.

By avshockey |

Was in town for work and my coworkers brought me here. The chips were good and warm, but the salsa was weird. Seemed like salsa mixed with refried beans. I had the chili rellano plate. It was not good. The batter was non-existent. It had hamburger in it. Overall I was very diappointed.

Hard to beat this TEX-MEX food

By CD-HouTx |

Although I am a native Houstonian, I did not find this awesome restaurant until 2000. The food is always fresh and flavorful, from the fajitas, the enchiladas, the tacos and everything in between. You know you are in a great Mexican food restaurant when the local Hispanics patron the establishment. The staff never changes, which also indicates a strong foundation and commitment to excellence. They are friendly, fast and always willing to please. Their prices are incredibly affordable and I have never been there when they were not busy. The bar area is a bit louder thus, my preference is the main dining room, however for a more festive atmosphere it would be perfect! In the evening hours (I think on Fri., Sat. & maybe Sun.) there is a Mariachi band that wanders through the dining room, not my thing but again can enhance certain celebrations. This restaurant is worth your time and your money, assured not to disappoint!

Trip Advisor Let Me Down

By Heat1907 |

This was the worst tasting food I have been served. It was not just one item, but everything. The salsa tasted liked canned tomato sauce, it was horrible. When I asked our waiter if they had any other salsa their reply was no. The chips were even worse, the oil they were fried in was obviously rancid. The chips had an awful taste and even smelled rancid. We ordered a guacamole which was two tablespoons full on top of a pile of lettuce. It lacked salt and was total blah. Our dinner was no better. My husband's enchilada sauce had a spoiled twangy taste and my combination plate was infused with rancid undertones. I looked around the restaurant and wondered why it had ever received good reviews? The restaurant was not at all crowded, but the patrons there all seemed to know one another. Maybe regulars come to socialize which over shadows their tastebuds.

Good food, good service, good time.

By JanWMaryland |

Roving guitar trio playing Spanish songs. Good "homemade" food, including flan to die for. This is a very popular spot, so be ready to wait....but the wait is worth it.

Great prices coupled with excellent service and delicious food!

By Brenda S |

Why do I LOVE Tia Maria's and keep coming back since my first time in 1987? Large portions, cheap prices, great margaritas, family atmosphere, no wait, fast incredible service (all the waiters check on you), excellent chips and salsa, delicious hot food -- including the ubiquitous beans and rice. On this visit, I got my "go to" Enchiladas Suizas and was able to take home half and get a second meal out of it. My husband enjoyed his Combination Enchiladas. Two dinners, a drink, and one frozen margarita was $26 before tip. We don't come often since it is a 24 miles drive down 290 -- but when we do go, I'm always happy.

Yummy!

By msch99 |

Been here twice with coworkers. Food was great on both visits, service was fast both times. My only wish is that they offered green sauce...

Great place to meet friends

By West River Girl |

We love Tia Maria’s! We enjoy great service and good food every time. The tortilla chips came to the table warm, and the house salsa, queso and guacamole make for delicious appetizers. Our favorites are the enchiladas dishes. The chicken is tender and the spices are well done. The ambience is casual and fun, making it the perfect place to meet friends.

Great food and service with awesome prices!

By Brenda S |

Another great visit to Tia Maria’s. In the 30+ years I have been eating here, I have never been disappointed. Our group of 4 talked about going somewhere else for our “reunion” but everyone wanted to go to Tia’s - including a friend who drove in from Dallas just to have dinner with us here! We arrived at 6pm on a Saturday night and had no problem getting a table ... or apparently keeping one since we were there until after 10pm. I ordered my standard Enchilada Suizas, which is generous portion of 3, plus sour cream — and only costs $8 or $9! The margaritas are also excellent — I tried both the frozen strawberry/mango one and a normal lime one as well. Another standard test of Mexican restaurants are their salsa and chips ... and Tia’s are the best ... very hard to stop eating them. During our 4 hours of camping at the table, our waiter was excellent and continued to check on us and provide refills. Wish I lived closer so I could visit more often!

Good food

By AuntNeeee |

The food was good, the band was fun. Not the best Tex-Mex in the world, but it was not bad. The "large" guacamole isn't that large!

Curb pickup

By Lynn M |

Ordered mixed beef/chicken fajitas to go for 3. We have food left over for 2 more meals at least. Everything was delicious. Whole process was great. Ordered on phone. Picked up and paid right in front. Looking forward to eating in soon--just not yet. Thanks Tia Maria for a great lunch.

Pleasant Surprise

By Vicki L |

We wanted to try a new restaurant today and ended up at Tia Maria's. Great food and service. It was a busy Sunday afternoon but the service was superb. Very good sweet tea!! Chips and dip excellent. Refills at exactly the right time. My husband LOVED the Fajita plate with the shimp included. Excellent beef. I had the number 8 which was perfect ( chalupa, cheese puff and guacamole) Very good price. We will go back.

Manager is RUDE… “Pepe”

By Whisper |

My family and I eat there regularly and we do family special occasions there as well. The staff and food are AMAZING! The manager is just BEYOND RUDE! And he really doesn’t care about the establishment. We asked for a table for three on a normal night and we’re brought to a booth where it was CLEARLY broken, (bottom cushion in disarray and on the FLOOR) and we put it back together ourselves… we politely told the manager what happened and he didn’t see anything wrong with it. I was dining alone today and he Literally walked pass me and under his breath but loudly said, “oh God…” how rude is that? I feel bad for his wait staff! I always over tip and almost didn’t want to die to the manager’s lack of common manners. Our family is in the restaurant business and THAT would NEVER be accepted.

Great neighborhood comfort food

By melissafM7108BV |

Service always prompt. Food always hot and margaritas are yummy! Friday nights are worth waiting for a table.

Love my Tia's!

By Brenda S |

I started going to Tia Maria's with my work friends in 1987 when I worked at 610/290. We eventually all moved to other work locations or moved out of state and lost touch. Last night, 8 of us had a reunion and everyone wanted to meet at Tia's (which has also remained one of my favorite restaurants). It was such a blast and it was made even more special by the wonderful service, low prices, and great food (love their chips & salsa, delicious frozen margaritas (watch out, they're deceptively strong!), enchilada suizas, and tortilla soup). We arrived at 6:30 and even though they were busy, we had no problem getting a table. I don't recall what time we actually left but it was probably after 11:30 (they close at 10:30...so yes, we were rude...but having so much fun, lost track of time). They were so professional and did not try to rush us out. During the entire time we were there, our server was prompt and attentive. He even knew to ask us if we wanted separate checks at the very beginning of our evening...and it was no problem. I can't wait to go back...even though I now live 24 miles away. Highly recommend!

Great Tex-Mex food at good prices.

Great Tex-Mex food at good prices. I have been going there for years. I always have Tía Marías on my list when visiting Houston.

Consistently good food and good service

We found this gem several years ago and quickly became fans. It is basic tex mex, at great prices, with a few good seafood dishes as well. The difference is that the food is always good - always. The staff is super friendly and helpful--without being too intrusive. We're now twice monthly regulars -- or more.

It's not bad

My wife and I have been regulars at several of the Mexican restaurants along 290. Of late, we have tried Tia Maria's on Dacoma. Enchilada dinner plates are plentiful. However, if you order food to go – be sure to double-check your order before leaving the premises, as what was supposed to be Fajita Chicken Enchiladas turned out to all be Beef Fajita :(

Every time we visit family in Houston, we go to Tia Maria's. The best Mexican food in Houston. Large portions and very moderately priced.

Great food, great prices. Even a Mariachi Band!

I was staying at a hotel nearby and was craving Mexican food so I searched and saw that this place was nearby. What a gem! Had dinner here and loved it! Was seated right away, and provided chips and salsa to snack on. Ordered a margarita which was delivered shortly thereafter and for dinner I ordered one of their combination plates. It came out sizzling hot and the food was fantastic. One of my favourite Mexican restaurants I've been to. Will definitely try to make it back here when I am back in Houston.

Never Disappointed!

My family has enjoyed Tia Maria’s for many years ~ good food and plenty of it as well as a fabulous margarita special! My favorite dish is the flour chicken flautas ~ the best!

Old time Tex-Mex neighborhood joint

An old-time Tex-Mex place. I just went back for the first time in about 20 years. They hadn't changed much. Quick service, good portions for the money. Good taste.

Best Mexican food at the best prices!

We've been eating at Tia's for 25 years and they can't be beat for quality, portions, service and price. Pedro and his staff are friendly and hard-working---they keep bringing out the chips and salsa while we enjoy the tasty margaritas. Tia's is family-friendly and their prices make dining out affordable. Houston has a lot of great restaurants but this is the best value for the money by far.

Great food and great service.

This is our favorite Mexican restaurant. The food is very good. Service is FANTASTIC!

We are there every Sunday (except when there is a football game)

Tia Maria's is not fancy. our group of 6 meets there almost every sunday. we're never rushed. we order our margaritas then chat about our week and solve many of the world's problems. I've had so many of Tia's margaritas that they are what I compare every other margarita to. nice queso. we usually order chicken quesadilla and a fajita platter. the food is placed in the middle of the table. we all share. staff is very friendly. we will continue to visit Tia's for many years.

the neighborhood texmex restruant.

Nice Atmosphere, Good Food at Low Prices

By Mike60984 |

I have been eating here for about 2 years now after I discovered it. It meets important criteria that I have for restaurants which is good food at low prices. Tia Maria's has a nice atmosphere with a 3 piece mariachi band playing in the restaurant table side and taking requests. This is a family style restaurant. Portions are large. Security is in the parking lot watching cars. Nothing fancy here just good inexpensive mexican food.

Good Food/Reasonable

We eat at Tia Maria's usually weekly. The food is good and at reasonable prices. Enjoy Happy Hour too.
