Yum Dim Sum!

By FF-one |

We ate at Tom’s and had delicious pork soup dumplings. Inexpensive. Great for lunch or dinner. $15 minimum for credit cards though so bring cash.

Simple good value

By Harl3yR1d3r |

Inexpensive tasty dim sum. You can eat very well here for less than $5-10 each. Don't come looking for a fancy place with pretty carts though. Nothing touristy about the place. Much more authentically like places I've eaten in Asia. Kitchen completely open and small enough to see them make it all happen back there. Comfortable seats if about 10 tables various size. Steady business when I was there about 7pm on a weeknight with fair amount of takeout too but service was pretty quick and friendly despite the 1-2 comments I see otherwise. Very nice to me anyway. I'll be back when in town!

Soup dumplings - wow.

By JosephS |

You go to a restaurant mostly because the food is great. Tom's did not disappoint in that way. The menu items we ordered were all very tasty, as we had hoped. The soup dumplings, which is the star attraction, did not disappoint. I'd say at this point, these guys, and Dim Sum Garden in Chinatown, make the best around. My daughter says Dim Sum Garden is a bit better, because their dumpling skin is thinner (if you can imagine that!). However, we both agree that the filling was tastier at Tom's. But, we quibble.

Really quick, fresh food

By RutherfordB |

It was busy and crazy in the restaurant, but we still got a table! The food came out really fast, and was fresh and good.

OMG! So good!

By Alli F |

At first, we were like.. Tom's? That doesn't sound in the least bit Asian. But it was close to the convention center, so we decided to give it a try. Were we ever glad we did! The food was top notch! They had everything we'd hoped from scallion pancakes to soup dumplings. Highly recommend!

Great soup dumplings

By Aristippe77 |

Order the soup dumplings, which are exceptional. Don't bother with the other stuff; it's okay, but nothing special

Great dim sum!

By marsha |

This restaurant is conveniently across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn where we were staying. The staff was very pleasant and helpful. The shrimp soup dumplings and chicken dumplings were wonderful! Will go back the next time i visit Philly.

Disappointed

By Patricia M |

We arrived too early to check in to our rooms but was able to leave our bags and go looking for food. I was already tired from the two airports so I wanted something close but I should have made myself walk the block or two to find something better The spicy beef Szechuan had so much oil standing in it we had to blot before trying to eat it. After I did try it I wished I hadn't, it was horrible. I'm not one for leaving food on the table but I had no desire to eat it We did try a few of the dumplings and found we like those so we were at least satisfied enough to go wait for our rooms to be ready

I like the food but not the servers

By Jhun R |

Dont get me wrong guys, I am asian myself and love chinese food. I just really hate it when they talk chinese in front of you or customers, it's kinda disrespectful

Great choice for Philadelphia Convention Center Area

By timdennis |

What a great place! I was with family at Philly Auto Show. Usually, walk to Chinatown to eat but kinda cold. Saw Tom's Dim Sum on 11th street. There is another one in Media, Delaware County and figured if this was a good experience would try Media since I'm there frequently. Well anyway, sorry didn't take photos but very modern, clean(spotless) place. Tables and a counter facing a large window-though view is city street and people boarding the bus to NYC Chinatown. Staff was fast and friendly. Four of us ordered different things all good, shout out to Crab pork soup dumplings-outstanding!! Prices were very reasonable. I got a paper menu when leaving and asked if they were affiliated with Tom's in media, PA and they are.

My first Dim Sum!

By Kismet _Regarder |

Thanks to the great location of this wonderful establishment, I was able to enjoy a new experience for lunch. I enjoyed the taste, texture, and the inventive features of the dish. Loved it

Great value, little gem

By Cloud_Matt |

A little gem of a Chinese restaurant, nothing special to look at, but good prices and good food. Especially recommend the Sesame Chicken. They do not take Amex.

What a surprise! Very well prepared dishes, strong flavors!

By John G |

My brought us here for dinner and we ordered seven dishes to share. Outstanding food quality, plate appearance, tastes. I liked the soup dumblings, the salt/pepper squid was very salty but outstanding along with the eggplant. Ample portions and very low prices. The trade off is that this restaurant has no atmosphere. Its simple chairs, formica tables. So....bring your own atmosphere of good friends and sample the menu. I will return again for the food. Service was very prompt. Dishes started t to arrive very quickly and everything was hot and fresh. Each dish was unique, not universal sauce used on multiple dishes. Light touch on wok frying.

Great transformation

By pyatachok |

What a wonderful place we've discovered in the same location where previous Dim Sum Garden was! (Which BTW was quite awful). Even after it changed the name to Tom's Dim Sum we would avoid it because we thought it's just the change of the name with the same ownership. I guess we were wrong. It is a new ownership after all. And since this place became Tom's Dim Sum everything changed about it. Cozy, clean (even bathrooms), modern and beautifully designed ambiance with a relaxing and pleasant music background. Nice, attentive and accommodating to your needs service (which is such a rare find in Chinese restaurants). Most important is that food is amazingly tasty and freshly done. We had two lunches here in two days we've spent in Philly that's how good it was! The highlight of all of the food was XLB - one of the BEST we've ever had. And the value for all of the above is very good too. We can't wait to come back and have some more of this wonderful food.

Not Expensive. Not Good

By The_Coach55 |

Tom’s Dim Sum is located in the heart of Philadelphia close to Jefferson station. We were able to get a table at 8 o’clock on a Sunday evening without prior booking. No alcohol is available for purchase here but you can bring your own. We had a couple of glasses of iced tap water instead. Despite many glowing reviews, I found the food to be very disappointing. It is definitely inexpensive but my hot & sour soup was thin and insipid although it cost only $4.75. I opted for steamed crab meat pork dumplings as well. These were equally poor with the content being reconstituted crab. My wife’s vegetable dumplings were adequate but I would not be revisiting in spite of the low cost of $22.74 excluding service.

Soup Dumplings Here!

By PaulaCai |

We like to get supper here after a long day at the Philadelphia Flower Show. The soup dumplings are a special treat, but there are many other favorites to choose. You may have to wait for your order - I assume it is because it is being made fresh. When it arrives it's tasty and hot! Good, satisfying, authentic Chinese food.

Highly recommend.

By RMJ H |

This is the best Chinese food I have ever had. I had never been to Philadelphia before so I didn't know about their BYOB policy. So it would have been nice to have a drink but other than that, it was amazing!

Late night dinner

By Phyllis10 |

We went here for a late dinner around 10:45pm. When we first walked in one of the hostess said only to go now, but another hostess said it’s ok you can sit. We ordered several things and shared. The eggplant with garlic sauce was delicious! We also ordered vegetable fried rice, steamed vegetable dumplings, edamame and potatoes and peppers. Everything was good.

Highly Recommend! Friendly Owner & Fast Service!

By Barcelonamom |

Went to Toms Dim Sum Friday night after a show at Trocadaro. We shared pork dumplings, bok choy, chicken kong pao and a shrimp dish. Everything came out hot and was very good. Restaurant clean with a good atmosphere. Owner stopped by table a few times asking how everything was. Feels like a family type restaurant. Service was fast and efficient, which was good because we only had an hour before we had to catch train, and close to train station. Very affordable. Would definitely return!

How to eat a soup dumpling.

By 🛶🏕🍷🍸🍹 |

You must order the steamed soup dumplings, we prefer the pork. The deep-fried and other ones are not the same. The dumplings are boiling hot, and this is the perfect time to eat them. If you wait till they cool off the soup congeals and the dough gets tough and they don’t taste as good. Pick the dumpling up with chopsticks and place it on the large spoon they provide. Then hold the dumpling on to the spoon with the chopsticks while you bite the top off of the dumpling. While you do this the hot steam will go up your nose and boiling soup may burn your tongue and lips. It’s worth it. With the top bitten off you can blow on it to cool off just a little bit. You can tip the spoon sideways and suck the soup out of the dumpling. By now the dumpling should have called off enough. still holding the dumpling with the chopsticks you can bite half of it off the spoon. then ship the rest of the soup off the spoon and eat the rest of the dumpling. It’s a bit of a process, but well worth it!

Disappointed

By Ellen C |

I had dinner there with a professional group tonight. My eggplant dish was extremely greasy and there were more onions than eggplant. Sun Garden around the corner is much better for Dim Sum.

Dont let the exterior scare you away!

By Quedog01 |

The location is not best, but the seaweed soup is incredible. I enjoyed a wonderful plate of combination fried rice and I simply could not stop eating. Give this place a try.

Dumpling Noodle Soup!!

By rduinc |

Only place we know of that makes a dumpling noodle soup. To eat, you bite off the top of the dumpling, suck the soup out, and then eat the noodle and meat. There are only a couple of options, we did them both and both are excellent. Supposedly it takes a day or two to make these treats. I believe restaurant has changed names to "Tom's dim Sum". Located near Reading Terminal.

good dumplings. average everything else

By Paul K |

I had lunch here one Sunday. I was very excited to have the dumplings after reading the reviews. The dumplings were great. Our other dishes were very very average. We had mapo tofu. BLAND!. and the Spicy beef. Not much beef and very bland as well. I would only order dumplings next visit.

Nice

By WYSWYG |

Service was prompt. we were there on a Sunday at around 5:30pm. we ordered the soup dumplings. It could be hotter. beef brisket soup noodle was very nice with a bit of spicy after kick. you can have it with your choice of noodle. I had with hand pulled noodle and it had a nice chew to it. Also a eggplant with garlic sauce; very authentic for northern Chinese cooking.

Dinner for one

By April Z |

I came here last Wednesday because I had heard good things about their xiao long bao (Shanghai soup dumplings) and man they did not disappoint! I ordered crab meat and pork and they didn’t come out scalding hot, so they were great to eat right as they came out. Their dumpling sauce is good too; I suggest biting a hole in the top of the bao and putting drops of the sauce in the dumpling for a flavor explosion. I also ordered the shrimp shu mai, which was good, but nothing stand out, as well as the spare ribs which were good, but again, not a stand out. If you order ribs here, be aware that the ribs are cut up into pieces so there are bone fragments you will need to remove while eating. This is how I remember eating Chinese ribs growing up, but others might not be used to this style of cooking. Overall, 5 Stars because the soup dumplings were perfect (and the reason I came) and the wait staff was very attentive. I’d come back again! P.s. there is street parking near by with meters if you don’t want to pay for a garage! :)

The pork dumplings are very greasy and tasteless as were the vegetable dumplings. Chicken dumplings were just OK.

By Mariannewilm1510 |

the restaurant is small and the wait staff seem very rushed. Our server was not particularly friendly.

Good food and fast service

By Rita593 |

The restaurant is a bit hidden underneath a bridge/tunnel but the food is great, with a good choice of dumplings and the service was kind and fast. It does not serve alcoholic drinks for those who appreciate them.

First time bad food

By SuzanneGarber |

I’ve been here many times for dim sum only. I decided to order a tofu entree today and was so disappointed. The tofu was not only heavily breaded but the breading covered a thick rice gluten coating so that the thin slice of tofu inside was barely tastable. The dish was not fully tossed in sauce but just ladled over. The two pieces of broccoli were cold—maybe not intended to be eaten? In fact the whole dish may not have been intended to be eaten making $15 paid for naught. I’ll stick to the dim sum only in the future. Two stars for good service.

Great Dumplings in downtown Philadelphia.

By Chadd C |

Great place for a delicious fast treat. The crab pork soup dumplings are delicious and service was fast and friendly. Definitely check it out.

Tasty Chinese food

By tedkirby |

This restaurant was next to my hotel, and I got takeout from here. Ordered noodles and some pork buns. Both were nice and hot and tasty. Prices were fair. This was on a weekday evening, there are a bunch of tables here, and place was about half full. The staff folks I interacted with were friendly and efficient.

Excellent!

By KPJNashville |

This is my first review - but after using TripAdvisor for years and after eating at this excellent little gem I am moved to share our experience. Simply put: SO good! Service was prompt, food was fresh and employees knowledgeable and friendly. On top of that, the prices are quite reasonable. We ordered steamed and fried dumplings, beef pancake, spicy eggplant and the sea bass with rice. Each was delicious! Go hungry because the food is so tastey you will want to eat every bite!

Dim sum let down

By cindyhm2015 |

Was not impressed. Only the dumplings come in dim sum portions and prices. Service was not great. They only have one type of tea. Food was ok. Disappointing experience.

Good, but depends on what you are looking for.

By cicnavi |

Obviously very popular with the Philadelphia locals. We were not sure what to expect, but were hungry for Dim Sum. Tried three plates plus the crab Rangoon. I don't recommend the Rangoon. But the Dim Sum was very good. Lunch service was busy and dishes come out when ready, rather than as a complete order. But it was worth it. I recommend it if you are looking for a casual, untrusted lunch.

Small Place with Good Food Relaxing Atmosphere

By dms_563 |

Across from our hotel. We had a great dinner here at a reasonable price. The atmosphere was very clean and relaxing. Our service was great.

Split decision

By KathrynP979 |

Stopped in because we were staying across the street at the Hilton and purchased for a family of 9 and food was hit or miss. General Tsao's was amazing while we ditched the lo mein as it was both chewy and brothy tasting. Fried rice was good but won ton soup had so much cilantro broth was inedible. Not a fan.

Very convenient

By Sheeba |

We were there with a group of six. Went there because of convenience to hotel. The food was very good hot well seasoned and we all enjoyed. Service was very good and fast. As far as atmosphere there really isnt any. But for a good hot meal at a reasonable price. I would recommend.

Surprisingly good

By Bo H |

On a stormy night there was a line to get on the line at the famous Italian chain nearby. Our hotel restaurant was crowded and not too appealing so we took a chance and went across the street to Tom's. Not only was the 6 page menu a surprise but the prices were great. We splurged on sesame chicken, soup dumplings, steamed buns and half a Peking duck. Lots of delicious free hot tea was served. Everything came out nicely timed and really tasty. Just next to the Reading market, it seems to be a place the tourists miss but the local college kids appreciate. We will be back!

Great soup dumplings

By umcpastor |

We planed on going to the dim sum garden but the line stretched down the block. So we can to Tom’s and we were not disappointed. Meal and service were great. The pork and crab soup dumplings were phenomenal. We are so happy we did not wait in line at the other spot. Thus little place under the bridge on 11th street is truly special. We highly recommend it.

Awesome Dim Sum

By Wander |

Heard raving reviews of this place from friends and it did not disappoint. There is an extensive menu that is sure to have something for everyone. Easy enough to get one main entree per person and then a few things to share and not break the bank. Everything was delicious and I can't wait to go back.

Great food, very fresh and filling

By cllsrr |

This place would have been a five except there was a really strange smell. Seriously. Having said that, it was clean and the food was very fresh. The wonton soup was probably the best I have eaten. We had fried rice and two kinds of dumplings, plus two different soups. All was very good. Service was good.

Very Good.

By Fabio B |

Very good and tasteful Chinese food, a lot of options, good service. We were passing by and decided to try. It was good surprise.

Good and Very Cheap

By widdoc |

Had dinner there two nights ago with a friend - we aren’t big eaters but we were full on $15 for both! Excellent beef dumplings, vegetable dumplings and edamame. Such a deal. Attentive wait staff and across from the Hilton Garden Inn. Go there!

Found this by accident, walked in b/c of reviews.. soup dumplings!

By froggy618 |

After going to Dim Sum Garden earlier in the week for soup dumplings, I happen to come across Tom's b/c it's across the street from my hotel. I looked up their reviews and decided to (lazily) give this place a try. Don't let the exterior deceive you. The interior is quite spacious, clean and staff was extremely attentive. We went around 1:30 on a Tuesday and were seated immediately. I had to try their soup dumplings and scallion pancakes. We also ordered steamed chicken dumplings and the sautéed bak choy for my husband. The crab and pork soup dumplings were very tasty (thinner skin and tastier soup than Dim Sum Garden) but this place lost points on the fact that they were not freshly steamed. I can tell b/c the skin was already dryer and not sticky anymore. It would have been an AMAZING XLB experience if it was freshly steamed! Bummer! The scallion pancakes were plentiful and delicious. Thin and flaky. The chicken dumplings were ok. The bak choy was nicely done. I'm glad we tried this place. Prices were very reasonable.

Very good Dim Sum in Philly

By Jeff E |

We dined at Tom's after reading some excellent reviews. As the name suggests, Tom's is known for their Dim Sum, but we noticed a lot of excellent looking dishes at other tables. We arrived at close to 2PM and there was a line waiting for tables, whiched turned out to be only 10 minutes. There's not much in the way of ambiance, but you go there for the food. We had almost exclusively Dim Sum, but did have the sweet and sour spare ribs, which were tiny riblets in an excellent sauce; not cloyingly sweet, with just a kick of spice. Not much meat, but enjoyable. We shared shrimp sui mai, which was OK, but nothing special; pan-fried pork and cabbage dumplings, which were excellent, but could have used more cabbage; and scallion pancakes, which were just delicious: tender and moist on the inside and crunchy outside. The only disappointment were the roasted pork buns. The pork filling was roasted, but the bun was steamed and doughy. The service was very fast, so you don't go there to dine, but to eat and be on your way. My wife and I would go there again if we're in town for something else, but living in the burbs, we wouldn't make a special trip.

Eating solo may leave you stranded

By Adrienne Y |

Interesting to find Dim Sum restaurant open for dinner. I sat at a counter at the window where my order was taken, but service after the order came was very slow. Sitting at the window was was not well covered by servers. Soup dumplings may be the best, but are pork which I don't eat. Soup portions are large, but the brisket piece in the soup was a little fatty. Vegetarian dumplings were a little bland. Will try vegee soup next time, maybe some dumplings, and not sit at the window...

Solid fare

By larrybard |

Very good dim sum, ample portions and reasonably priced. Efficient service. When one of our party ordered wonton soup -- not too adventurous an order, certainly -- was surprised that after the waitress asked whether he wanted small or large and he ordered the small size, the bowl of soup that was served was rather large by our standards. And it was certainly different from what is commonly served in run of the mill Chinese restaurants; this had different (in shape and taste) wonton, and the soup definitely reflected the taste of the seaweed that was in it. A nice change of pace. As might be expected, the soup dumplings were quite good and are recommended.

Excellent dumplings!

By Wendy T |

Unreal -- dumplings look average but they are amazing -- no added sauces needed. Soup was not so great. General Tso's was excellent.

Good restaurant

By Luis P |

The site is located in a covered passageway near the Chinatown gate. The dining room is pleasant, the food is good and at a good price and the robot that takes out the dishes is curious. Of course, the waitress who served us was not very friendly to say the least.

Fabulous food

By MartinRooney |

Peeked thru the window every type of diner was in looking happy as a pig in a poke. Service 4 out of five maybe three. Point 8 food 7 out of five maybe e ten out of five it really is that good in a place you won't expect. Great grub.

Dim Sum Lunch!!!

By Miru-chan |

Six of us went there for Dim Sum lunch. We had fried rice, noodles, Xiaolongbao, mapo tofu, etc. and all are pretty good!

Yum Yum!

By JoAnn M |

We were seated easily on a Wednesday night. Service was quick. The waitress was helpful. Food was out of this world. I recommend sharing so that you can try more things. The price was quite satisfying also. For 2 people we ate for under $25 and left quite full. The scallion pancake though a bit greasy was the best one I have ever had. The hot & sour soup was good, the Shanghai wonton soup was great, the spicy dumplings were also quite good though the dough was a bit thick. We would have ordered more but there were only 2 of us If you are in the area of the convention center stop in.

Great, Varied Dim Sum

By WATraveler13 |

This is a small, quick service place. It is across the street from the Hilton Garden Inn and one block behind Reading Market. For downtown, very good prices for a variety of dishes. The house special dumpling is excellent and use the little bowl they put on the table since the dumpling is full of flavorable juices. The hot and sour soup is just right and excellent. It is a BYOB place if you want wine or beer. Be careful where you park though since area is notorious for tickets. Staff is friendly and helpful, service is excellent. Try it.

Nice little gem of a place

By stm5468 |

Great little restaurant. Knew it was good because there were Chinese who were eating there too. Lots of options beyond Dim Sum. Great variety, delicious noodle dishes. Highly recommend!

First time, and it was great

By Dallas D |

In town for a conference and stopped in with some colleagues. I had never tried soup dumplings before so I ordered the crab and pork option. I quickly googled how to properly eat soup dumplings and I’m pretty sure I still did it wrong. These dumplings were literally the best thing I’ve ever eaten. 8 to an order which was plenty for lunch. Service was great, restaurant was clean, $15 minimum for credit cards.

Varied Menu and Good Service

By Swanky Times |

We've eaten here a few times while in Philly, the food is always good and the service is very rapid. There's a lot of variety in the menu and my son is a new convert to Chinese food!

Delicious.

By Traveler3040 |

We arrived late to the Hilton Garden Inn across the street. Although the door said they closed at 10:30, we weee told the kitchen closes at 9 am. We are the the pork with brown sauce noodles and chicken dumplings (steamed). They were delicious. The restaurant has a robot that moves food from the kitchen to tables or the counter. Very reasonable prices.

4.5 star, Shanghai style cuisine

By Todd |

If you like Shanghai style cuisine, this place will not disappoint. The XiaoLongBao is so delicious it’s mouth watering. The other dim sum and dishes are equally good. My wife and I went there two nights in a row. I knocked off a half star (4.5 if I can) because like all other Chinese restaurants, it is a little noisy. And customers adapt quickly. Bathroom is clean. Service is excellent. This place can get a little busy at dinner time and you might need to plan ahead arrive early.

Great place , amazing food

By Margo0621 |

What a great place ! Excellent food ! We tried different dim sums , pork pancake , Crab and pork soup dumpling - everything was so tasty !

One of the best dim sum restaurants in the area!!

By T D |

Since the owner is one of the original Dim Sum Garden crew, we had to try it out. The dim sum dishes are delicious and are getting served fast and hot. The roast pork bun is delicious - one of the best we've tried so far - which says a lot, since we've been to most dim sum restaurants in the Philadelphia area. I would say, i prefer this restaurant compared to the Dim Sum Garden - the line is shorter and they take credit card. Try it out if you're a dim sum lover like us.

The food is excellent and the place has doubled in size to accommodate customers

By Justin W |

I had been to Tom's Dim Sum when it was just a small hole in the wall by the bus station and it was excellent then. The place has now doubled in size, much nicer to eat in and the food is still excellent. The place was mobbed the evening that I ate there. I had the soup dumplings, wonton soup and roast pork buns. There was a mix up and they came with the steamed roast pork bun which were still good. Tom's soup dumplings were excellent. They came to the table steaming hot and juicy as they burst in your mouth with every bite. You could taste the pork and crab in them and with a little soy sauce, there is nothing like them. The roast pork buns were delicious with the sweetness of the roast pork in the delicate flour bun. They were nicely sized and you could taste the pork in every bite. The soup was the only disappointment but then I do not seaweed in my soup. Someone else might like it but I was not thrilled. They also have TV's so I could watch the game while eating. The service was quick and the people working there are very nice and keep a good personality with how busy the place is for dinner. What I did like is that it is one of the few places in Chinatown that accepts a credit card.

Fantastic Dim Sum

By Louise P |

Although the name Tom may not initially give you the impression that this restaurant has excellent dim sum, it does! The restaurant, including the bathrooms, is exceptionally clean. Each dish was excellent. However, the soup dumplings were out of this world. Finally the service was timely and very helpful.

Hidden gem

By 157henk157 |

Located underneath an overpass or bus station, you are really not sure whether you are in the right location, and it looks like nothing, but the food is fantastic and especially the Dim sum was delicious. Just be careful where you walk, once you get outside again.

Highly reconmend

By Bucket List |

Excellent food and service. Nicely appointed restaurant, came at recommendation of Philly dwellers. Would highly recommend for Chinese food!!

If you want to be treated rudely eat here.

By R W |

This restaurant also goes by the name of Tom's Dim Sum. Which speaks to their I just don't care attitude. My wife and I recently stopped in for a quick dinner. We were greeted at the door and seen it and then left 45 minutes without anyone coming to take our order. I tried repeatedly to get the attention of all the staff in the restaurant. They would not make eye contact with me and ignored my attempts to get their attention. This is very frustrating. This is probably one of the most rudest behavior that I have received from a restaurant. Now with that said , my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed the taste and the presentation of the meal. In summary I think you take your chances with this restaurant. There are plenty other good restaurants in the area to choose from.

Fantastic

By DJC1976 |

Delicious. First time here and loved it. Great dim sum. Try to lo mien too! Food was hot, fresh, tasty and good portions.

Our new favorite in Chinatown

By PelleasPhiladelphia |

This is a re-vamped, enlarged version of what used the be the original dim sum garden. For those who don’t know, this was the best place in Philly for soup dumplings (a juicy delicacy everyone must try). They are just as good now, plus some new variations. To be clear this is not a pay by the plate dim sum restaurant, this is a full menu dinner restaurant and everything we tried was great and outside the Chinatown norm. We will be back!

Wonton Soup is great!

By 24Amy |

Loved the wonton soup so much, I got it 2 nights in a row. Pork dim sum bread was a bit dense but still tasty. Pork soup dumplings were very good. Can dine in or take out. BYOB.

good soup, average dim sum

By Paul G |

This address now houses "Tom's dim sum", the third iteration in the last few years. Shanghai dumpling soup was like a really good pho with complex flavors including cilantro chives and seaweed. Not salty, really good rice wontons. Pork and Chive dumplings however were leathery and cold, despite me being the only patron as the place opened at 11 AM, when I walked in. I much preferred the run down and cheaper first iteration of this place a year or two ago when the dumplings were world class and made by a guy who also served them at the AC casinos for big money. They exploded exquisite liquid in your mouth. Heaven. This place has a nice atmosphere but 1) It isn't why one eats in Chinatown and 2) It is out of place being tucked in a tunnel of buildings with bus fumes.

Fast and very good food

By kfl51 |

This hotel was right across the street from our hotel. It is small but had very good and fast service. The food was very good with great prices. Would go here again.

Great food in an unexpected location

By 74tamacat |

This place is hidden on 11th Street under a building that covers over the street, near a Chinese bus company waiting room for NYC trips...also about a block from both the Reading Terminal Market and the Convention Center.. It does not look promising as a place to get good authentic Chinese food....If you are willing to live with the fact that this is simply a very nice restaurant that happens to have some (but not a lot of) dim sum, but does have very good quality offerings then this is a place you will enjoy. I love vegetarian Asian foods of various ilk so for me this place was a find. I asked the waitress which menu items were vegetarian and she immediately offered a half dozen. I ordered the scallion pancake, a vegetable dumpling, the cucumber salad, and the hot and sour soup. Al were very good and this was more than enough food for dinner for me. I was especially impressed with the hot and sour soup since it is very difficult to find a vegetarian version of this...This version was not vegan though because it had egg in it, but the waitress told me this in her description. I will return and try a few other items and maybe also enjoy the soup again.

Very tasty, nice variety

By BandB-1508 |

We had the beef on a stick (4 skewers), the crab and pork soup dumpling (a delicious bit of soup inside the dumpling - read instructions in menu), scallion pancake, and crystal shrimp dumpling. Perfect amount of food for lunch. The scallion pancake was a bit disappointing though still tasty. The rest of the dishes were very good. Great service. Friendly staff. Accept credit cards.

Great; Cheap; Friendly; BYO; Also goes by Tom's Dim Sum

By Michele M |

Went here with a large birthday party. We ordered a ton of stuff and were able to try a wide variety. Everything was great. People loved the dumplings (including dumpling noodle soup!) but the rest of the menu was also quite tasty for those who rather have non-dumplings. The place is BYO and the bill for 14 people with tax and tip came out to about $21 per person. So it's a really great deal given that everyone left happy and completely stuffed. The staff is also very friendly and always happy to offer recommendations.

Good food.

By NDStones |

I stopped at the restaurant because it was pouring outside and it was close to my hotel. The food was very good. Don't let the location and appearance fool you. Also, there were reviews of the staff being unfriendly. I didn't have this experience. They were very nice.

Price: Cheap as. Perfect if you’re travelling on a budget. Service: Fast. Servers are Chinese though and they will converse in Chinese in front of you, which could be construes as disrespectful by some. Food: Dimsums are great for the price. We also tried their pork ribs and they were not bad at all. Their fried rice were a bit salty but still better than most Chinese food stops. Highly recommended.

Totally Unexpected - if in the area GO

By AGoodCupofJoe |

I was wondering around an area bereft of restaurants, especially any you would go into. The Philly convention center area needs so much work to be like a major city should have its ridiculous. Back to Tom’s Dim Sum. Visually meh. I must have arrived just as it opened for the day. I was truly solo, no one else in. I almost left. So glad I didn’t. All the servers were great. Amazing variety of Dim Sum, etc. all excellent. My only regret was I was alone, and that meant no sharing and that limited my number of dishes. I will be back and recommend to anyone in the near hotels or convention center

Disappointing

Made a trek here after reading all of the rave reviews, and was really disappointed in the flavor and quality of the food. The spring rolls were bland, at best, and had very little filling. Shu Mai were small and malformed. I will not be returning.

Decent Food Rushed

By istrvler |

The Food we ordered was average at best. The sauces on all the food were very thick nd heavy. The food was ok but not great. They were very busy and the service was rushed but it had to be cause people were standing waiting for tables. food was essentially thrown on the table as they went to the next table. We had soup noodles very thick noodles again average. The sauce on the sesame beef was very thick sweet. The low main was good. The General Tso Shrimp was the best but very spicy.

Lunch

Dim sum served hot and tasty reasonable pruced. Wonton soup was excellent, wontons very light in texture not overpowering. Great for a quick light meal

Good cheap Chinese food

By SMartHistorian |

The food here is fine, but nothing to write home about. The best thing about Tom's are the reasonable prices. In contrast to many other places in Philadelphia, you can get a decent meal here for an affordable price. It's not gourmet Chinese food, but is tasty and a very good value for the money.

Dim sum life!!

By Josh D |

There is a tradition in my family to always eat Asian food!! We are dim sum heads and I have an aunt and uncle who are also dim sum heads and we eat the shumai together!! I was once very picky and I used to bring pizza to the dim sum places and my dad once made a joke that it made him doubt his paternity!! I happened to become a dim sum head along with them and I went here with one of my friends from Temple who I have gotten ramen and pizza with!! We are both register food people and we went for lunch here last weekend!! We weren’t trying to go into a food coma so we just got scallion pancakes and soup dumplings and another dumpling!! It fulfilled my soul and we demolished it all in 12 minutes!!

New and Improved "Tom's Dim Sum"

By Tom M |

The restaurant is now Tom's Dim Sum. Located under the overpass and across the street from the Hilton at 11th St. We've visited a number of times but focus on the dumplings. We had been patrons of Dim Sum Garden at 1120 Race but the combination of frantic, chaotic service, only a few window seats, and the bad city health inspection reports made us try Tom's. Can't say much about the rest of the menu but the Shanghai Soup Dumplings are excellent (pork or crab, steamed or fried). The Scallion Pancakes are outstanding. The Hot and Sour Soup (while not up to our first choice at Lee How Fook just up 11th St.)is passable. We've also had a variety of other dumplings and buns here--all good. But slurping down the delicate Soup Dumplings is what this place is all about. Service is efficient without the craziness of having 5 different waiters come up to the table asking if you are ordering. There is a lot of seating with large windows all along the 11th st. side of the building. This is a BYOB so we always take a bottle or two of wine along to accompany the delicious dumplings. Will definitely be back!

Great cheap, quick Chinese food

By Abigail Park |

In the tradition of dim sum, the plates were small, delicious, and cheap. My boyfriend and I were both full after 4 plates, which totalled $18. We ordered shanghai shumai, of which neither of us were particularly fond. The service was fast. The servers were cold, but you do not go to dim sum restaurants to have a great conversation with the server.

SOUP DUMPLINGS FTW

By Beverlee M |

The best soup dumplings. Don't go anywhere else. It's a little dingy and scary inside, but it's BYOB, so you can look past that.

Pretty good

By EH |

The soup dumplings were good, as were the stir fry noodles I had. Service was pretty good and the food came out quickly. Great spot to come for a fast, affordable dinner.

Good food and service

By Karen M |

Had the dumplings which were good and a beef dish which was good but nothing special. I have had better dishes at the Media restaurant although I would try this venue again just to make sure it was not an off day.

Disappointed

On a brief vacation in Philadephia, we stayed near Chinatown. We looked up the most recommended place to eat and found Dim Sum Garden. It was right across the street from our hotel. We were disappointed in the food. It and the service were average at best.

Excellent Restaurant!

The staffs are nice and respectful. Service is great. Food is amazing. Nothing else can I say; it's a great place.

Soup Dumplings!

Wow. If you have never had these you must try them they are delicious. The place doesn't have much ambiance but who cares, your there for the food.

Great Authentic Chinese Food!

By APLING |

If I could, I would give you 4.5 stars, but there is no such choice... Very friendly staff and we were quickly seated. Food was served promptly and everything was very good. Xiaolongbao (soup dumpling) is a must eat food! I haven't had a good Xiaolongbao for a long time, so I was very satisfied. Another favorite food of mine - Crystal shrimp dumplings - were also good. I wish the skin was a bit thinner, but they were good. Surprisingly good food that I really liked was Spicy Crispy Shrimp. I have never had a dish like this in the Chinese restaurants before, but they were very addictive and super good. The reason I cannot give you 5 stars is because I know the really good authentic Chinese food, and my expectation is really high..sorry, but the food was really good. I wish there is a restaurant like this where I live...if so, I would definitely go there every week!

Two excellent dinners at Tom’s Dim Sum

By Justin W |

I was in Philly for the Flower Show and love coming to Tom’s for dinner. The food is excellent. The place was busy for both days of the show. The first night I had their delicious Soup Dumplings with Pork, bowl of Hot and Sour Soup and Roast Pork buns. Everything was delicious, perfectly cooked and looked amazing. I felt the service was a little rushed but that was because it was so busy The second night I went because most of the restaurants in Philly’s Chinatown are still cash only and I do not want to deal with that. The restaurant was mobbed with people leaving the Flower Show that evening. The servers were all rushed because of the crowds, the place could have used a good sweep and I could see they did not have enough help. Still the food was excellent. I had their Wonton Soup, which was off putting because it had so much cilantro in it that it affected the taste. The Spring Rolls were perfectly cooked and the Tiny Pan Fried Pork buns were excellent. As rushed as a meal that it was, I really enjoyed it. The food here is excellent.

Soup Dumplings just like NYC!

By DrLuthor |

We've tried the best authentic Shanghai restaurants on the east and west coasts and this place deserves 5 stars! We hardly ever give these high marks but here's why. Place is clean Great service with a smile which you don't normally get in Chinese restaurants Soup dumplings tastes just like the famous place in NYC Other dishes are also delicious from Scallion Pancake to Shanghai wonton soup We are from the DC area and would definitely try to go back whenever we head up that way

Food was so good I ate there 2 times in 2 days

By Ben T |

I love the Chef Special Pot Sticker. The General Tso's Chicken and Chicken & Broccoli and the vegetarian meals were great as well. It is very pricey but as long as you are ok with it you will like the food. Tables and utensils and plates were very clean.

My third time and the food is consistently excellent

By Justin W |

God I love coming here. I have been coming to Tom's since it was a tiny little Dim Sum store with the furniture that did not match. The place has really grown up. The food and the service were excellent that night. We had the Pork and Crab Soup Dumplings and they were so juicy and flavorful that we should have ordered a second round. The Shrimp with Pecans was delicious and the shrimps were so sweet. The dish was so flavorful with the steamed broccoli on the side. The Pan fried pork and chive dumplings were really good and we devoured those really quickly too. We finished off the meal with the Singaporean Noodles with the taste of curry and they were delicious with a nice assortment of ingredients in each bite. The service was really quick and the people who own the restaurant could not have been nicer to us. The meal as usual was excellent.

Very good food

My wife's coworker highly recommended this restaurant, renamed Tom's Dim Sum. The picture does not do the place justice, the restaurant and bathrooms have been updated. Very busy at 1PM on Friday, Dec. 30. Food comes out when it is ready, regardless as to how or what you ordered. Started with Scallion pancake, in honor of Chanukah, crispy on the outside and oniony on the inside. Garlic chicken came out with it with a huge mound of rice as did Cold noodles with peanut sauce. Vegetable steamed bun was @ 3 inches in diameter, definitely the best we had ever had. Soft on the outside with a flavorful assortment of chopped veggies on the inside. Lastly, Beef dumplings were steaming hot, juicy and tasty. Only issue, they kept repeating on me. $29.00 with tax and tip. Worth the trip and parking hassles.

Very Good Food - good price

Wife and I stopped for a small meal.. I'd call it like 1/2 a dinner. We paid $13+ tip and were satisfied. Had some dumplings, spring rolls, and scallion pancakes. All were good - pancakes and dumplings excellent.

Excellent soup dumplings...

By Zman71868 |

Stopped in for a quick meal on New Year's and wish I was hungrier when I visited. Lots of menu options, but opted for the spring rolls, pork soup dumplings and pork friend rice. All were very tasty and fresh. The pork dumplings are delightful. I will be back the next time I['m in Philly.

Best Dim Sum

By Pedirn308 |

We found this place because it was across from our hotel...it was late and we were hungry. We weren't sure how it would be b/c from the outside it looks a little questionable. OMG we were wrong. This is absolutely the BEST Dim Sum we have ever had. My husband is Chinese so trust me we have had our share of this food and this is so fresh and authentic. Staff was great as well. This is a restaurant not to miss.

We recognized normal chinese dishes

By Vacationer8675301 |

I tried this place based on Trip Advisor and the fact that we recognized dishes on the menu that we have at home. We were quickly seated and brought water. There was no other offer for a drink. NO tea at this restaurant. They do have bottled cokes in a cooler but we were never asked for our drink order. We ordered the sweet chicken corn soup which is there version of egg drop with cream of corn in it. It was ok. Ever order comes only with white rice. If you want fried rice, they up charge you $2.25 per cup of rice and it is not at all the normal fried rice we have anywhere else. They take white rice and add in onions and sliced chicken, no egg, no soy sauce. It was gross. The dishes were just ok but the meat is very strong tasting and we actually hated our meals. There are no egg rolls here, only spring rolls and there were nothing in them except a piece of cabbage. The kicker is that we payed a ridiculous amount for a crappy meal. We had to park in the parking garage attached to the Terminal Market and no one told us to get our parking ticket stamped. The sign going into the parking garage says $6 per hour. If you dont go into the Terminal Market and get it stamped, you will be charged $25 per hour, like us. The food was not worth the hassle to get there, park , eat or pay the parking fee.

Great hidden gem in Philly

By DKM |

My husband and I wanted something that wasn’t cheesesteaks, pizza or a burger so I went to Yelp and found this restaurant and we were not disappointed. It’s across from the Hilton Garden Inn by the convention center and it’s situated under their parking garage. We were seated immediately and looked at the dim sum menu. We were not disappointed by the quality of the dishes. The pork soup dumplings (6 to an order) had a good ratio of soup to meat and we’ve been to Din Tai Fung and their dumplings were as good as DTF. We also ordered scallion pancakes, pan fried pork dumplings, shrimp on a stick, and HK style shumai and everything was delicious. The price...where do I begin, our total with sodas came to $36 and change...each item was around $4.25-4.50 in price which we thought was a bargain especially on how good their food is. Needless to say if you’re in Philly, come and visit this restaurant you won’t be disappointed.
