Walking down Van Ness Road and came upon Tommy’s. Decided on a late lunch and had the pastrami / cheese sourdough sandwich, potatoe salad with a draft IPA too wash it down. The food was great and price very affordable. Although the place may seem a bit intimidating from the outside, friendly staff and very relaxed. Will be back. My partner had the pork shoulder sandwich and was also good.

First impression: I was excited. My eyes were definitely bigger than my stomach. I ordered a turkey sandwich, mac salad, mash potatoes. My husband got the buffalo chili & coleslaw. Everything was.. meh. My sandwich, although moist and delicious meat was missing something. I don't know what it was. Just..something. It needed a sauce and trust me I tried whatever I could and still didn't get the full effect. My husband's chili was okay, he was hoping it would have more of a kick. Honestly, I wouldn't go back. It was okay. Cool atmosphere but I'm sure there is better.

We loved this place. Quick service. Great roasted meats. Nice sides. Full bar. Decent prices. Who could ask for anything more? We had roasted turkey...brisket....and pastrami and we all shared. It was all great. 3 meals for 41 bucks. Nobody went home hungry. And don't forget to try the free pickles at the end of the line. We could walk there from our hotel so it was very confident. It is on the bus line or take a ride. It is worth finding!

I come over to san Francisco from England every year I love tommys joynt ive even buy a new t shirt from there every year and love to see the san Francisco giants play Iam now see my self as a fan of theres love san Francisco

Ordered Thanksgiving ahead of time on the website. Excellent service pick up time was 130. There was parking available and by 131. I was leaving with our meal. Everything was delicious with the exception of two things the bread and the cranberry sauce I would suggest they just buy canned cranberry sauce versus the cranberry sauce they had or just make your own, same with the bread. However, bottom line is it was a lovely Thanksgiving dinner. It was super convenient. The food was largely good. The gravy stuffing turkey sweet potatoes, and mashed potatoes were all delicious. You will want to leave the pumpkin pie out for a while as it was previously frozen. It taste delicious, but if you put it in the refrigerator and bring it to the table, everyone’s going to have a very semi frozen piece of pumpkin pie.. For the management reading the review, simply change your cranberry sauce and don’t have tough dry bread. You do all this work to make everything else so delicious. Those are literally two of the easiest things that you could possibly do and you could make them 1000 times better than they were.

Had a meal here on Thanksgiving, everything is just like your mother would make it and the portions are plentiful. If anything, the kitsch interior is definitely worth of having a beer in here. I recommend the sloppy Joe or any meat sanwich aswell

Had the brisket sandwich, and the meat was absolutely amazing. Every thing else was OK. Cool place for a beer and sandwich for lunch, but wouldn’t perhaps plan a big dinner here.

We went there for the pre metallica party and wow what a place to visit. Great bbq and alot of great value for your money . The manager was telling me and my wife that his pit masters have been doing there cooking for 40 plus years and you can really taste the quality of it .

I first went to Tommy's 40 years ago. It's in the same location and the menu hasn't changed much. It's the best deli food in San Francisco. Always fresh meats, buffalo stew, bread, etc. This is the place to drink beer. Rotating tap selection and a big selection in bottles. Service is causal, but quick and polite. I never, ever miss a chance to eat in Tommy's when visiting San Francisco.

Old style bar decor, with a food queue, fresh carved joints, specials every day, wide variety of choice

Our UBER ride passed Tommy's Joint (or Joynt) on the way to our hotel. Both my brother in law and I noticed it and thought it looked interesting. So, after we got settled, we (my sister, BIL and me) put on our walking shoes and tried to find it. We were pleasantly surprised at the interesting atmosphere, the great food and the amazingly lwo prices. I had the turkey dinner, which came with gravy, two sides and a roll for $14.50 !!! My sister had the ham dinner. My brother in law had a pastrami sandwich which he liked. I really like that there are FREE pickles, so we shared a small plate and a spot where you can get a glass and fill it with cold water. We might return tomorrow night!

This is a fun place to visit when you are looking for a big sandwich or plate of meat carved to order, along with a choice of side dishes. Beef brisket, corned beef, turkey, sausages, stews and other tasty choices. A favorite tradition is their buffalo stew. This place is very popular with locals and the restaurant and has been in business since 1947. It hasn't changed much over the years and is probably one of the last traditional hof brau restaurants left in the City. Interesting interior with walls and ceilings adorned with photos, plaques, and other items. Full bar with lots of stools and a big choice of beers. There can be a long line at times but it moves quickly

Have fond memories of late night snacks here during college many moons ago. Brought family here for another flashback. The roast beef and pastrami sandwiches are still killer. And an Irish coffee nightcap helped out too...

A friend recommended it to us and we went because it was close to the hotel. The Hispanic waiters are very kind and friendly and recommended what to drink and eat. They have a short variety of food but what they have at that time, each day, is incredibly good. We ate pastrami, lasagna... everything was delicious.

DDD spot that didn’t disappoint! Great service, local beer, and great food. Bartender gave us good recommendations and explained the menu.

Awesome beef!!! Tommys is great value and the food is amazing. It’s a canteen style service where you choose your main and sides following the line down. The meat was just amazing and melt in the mouth. Drinks are available at the bar on the other side of the restaurant so try to plan your drinking and dining due to the separate queues.

The first time I was at Tommy's Joynt, I think the original Tommy was still alive. On our return to the states from Japan in 1964, we were craving good corned beef and cabbage and all the stuff that Tommy's sells. We were not disappointed. It was great. Time and tastes have changed much, however my daughter and I were very surprised how good Tommy's still was. We over indulged to our tummy's content. Good, hot food after a cool spring day in San Francisco was really welcomed. This place is a must for every meat lover. My daughter loved the pickles, too, her favorite condiment with corned beef. Go there, just one block south of the new Tesla Sales Room. Yes times have changed.

Carvery service was slick, to the point of feeling rushed, no fish option so as a non meat eater (so why did I come here) I had baked potato and salad. Kids enjoyed their food and drinks service was fine. Atmosphere was good but not exactly family friendly.

My husband and I had lunch here today. He had a pastrami sandwich which he shared with me because the roast beef sandwich I had was so tough I could not eat it. It was a great disappointment

If you are into Ambiance... Forget about this place. If you are into some damn good Homestyle Cooking ... this is the place to be! Meats, Meats, Meats and everything else that counts in life! Simple choices, delicious cuts, huge proportions, excellent staff, great old school restaurant, excellent prices. Can't say enough about this place if you enjoy a big healthy meal. Meat, potatoes, veggies, salad, bread ...( drop the mic, nuff said)

With my first visit here in 1970 late one Saturday night, I can swear Tommy’s is still quite a place. It’s a special place for me. Memories of Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin are in the air. Now this is definitely a guy’s place with the great meat and beef sandwich and plate platter portions of well cooked food with the large screen TVs, but you’d be amazed by the many women in here too. The hofbrau ambiance remains intact. As I live out of town 20 miles away, I drop in here twice a year. The brisket, buffalo chili, buffalo stew, and BBQ sloppy joe turkey and pastrami sandwiches are terrific. You can have a Thanksgiving turkey dinner 365 days a year. Just amazing also is the salmon entrée at about $13 at half the price of most any other restaurant’s salmon entrée. And there are daily specials. Then the coffee refills are on the house. A very nice touch. One warning for guys: No matter how hungry you are, eat slowly enough to savor the food. It’s that good. Be prepared to wait in line more than 10 minutes around the busy lunch hours and dinner hours, but the wait is worth it. Better to drop in between 2-4PM or after 8PM. You’ll be dining at your table just as fast as you would in any other sit down popular restaurant. If you want to watch a game here, the beer and drink prices are very fair. And pitcher prices are amazing. In the dim hofbrau lighting inside, it’s easy to see the action on the screens surrounded by the beer steins and the beer bottles. Parking on Geary Street or a block away always seems available. If you want to eat a real meal at a late night hour, this is the place. Cash only. But with the prices that seem dirt cheap, and they are, you’ll be leaving Tommy’s thinking about coming back again.

Tommy's came highly recommended to us on the past trip. It did not disappoint. I got the turkey sloppy joe and anchor lager on tap. The sandwich was so good. Pickles from the barrel were a nice touch. Something to keep in mind, this is cash only but has an ATM inside. Being from Canada, going to ATM can be quite expensive if even possible. So for international travellers, make sure you have some cash with you.

We had barbecue brisket dinner platter. I also got a side of coleslaw. The brisket was tender and the sauce was perfect. I really liked the coleslaw. The service was extremely fast. My IPA was ice cold and delicious 🍺 Atmosphere- old school San Francisco saloon charm~

I had the BBQ Brisket Platter ($13.50) with mashed potatoes & gravy, baked beans and bread with butter. The brisket was awesome. It melts in your mouth. The beans were great. Will definitely return every time I visit San Francisco.

Visited this place on our trip around the States earlier in the year and loved it. Don’t come expecting gourmet service. They smack the food on your plate like it’s a big family dinner, and you’ll be surprised how quickly you’ll shovel it down and be up for seconds.

Unexpected place for sure. It is very traditional, the meals are ordered on a fast food basis (take a platter, choose a meal from a board, take it, pay for it and go sit and eat), but the drinks are ordered afterwards separately by a waitress as in a regular restaurant. There's also a well equipped bar. The food was freshly cooked and tasted good. We were happy to find a place that is traditional American, yet does not force us to eat sandwiches and fries only as others do - their corned beef was excellent. They also offer wide variety of beers from all around the world and several American on tap. Prices were quite okay too, not super cheap, but definitely affordable. Go for it. Beware, there may be quite a queue at dinner time.

Food was delicious. Whatever you buy GET the BBQ sauce. Special ingredient must be illegal cos that shiz is next level. Great grungy atmosphere here.

We ate here with friends after spending a day in Napa and Sonoma. We were staying across the street at the Opal Htl. It was approx 8pm and the place was hopping with locals ,always a good sign. Food was delicious . You line up and order.Prices reasonable.Lots of choices.

Got there after midnight. I got a taste of some delicious pastrami and ordered a sandwich. Small portio. The size of the sandwich left me hungry. Double the fill would have made it a decent sandwich, not great, but decent.

We have been going here since the mid sixties, recently visited San Francisco and had to go back. Still a great local joynt with good roast beef sandwich, sides and cold draft Anchor Steam beer.

Tommy’s Joynt is a San Francisco landmark. It’s very unique dining room has appear in some movies filmed in San Francisco. The food is excellent! They give large servings. There is a line to be served. Don’t be discouraged the line moves very fast. The food is very good and there is a large selection to choose from the menu. There is a bar with a larger selection of Beers. There is no parking lot only street meter parking. Street parking is very limited due to major construction work in the area. This is a very small fun restaurant. The restrooms are located upstairs. Not sure if there is an elevator. You might have to ask. Otherwise you have to climb narrow stairs.

Always happy to take people here for a unique experience. The new buildings shadow but don't outshine Tommy's. Had a burger and it was wonderful. Friends were impressed with the buffalo offering. Lots of other options. Drinks are reasonable. Parking has become even more challenging in the area.

Great value for the portion size and it being San Francisco. Mashed potatoes and green beans both solid. I got the roast beef which was a bit over cooked but my brother had the bbq brisket which was awesome. For a quick hearty meal it’s a great option but I didn’t think it was anything special.

Had so much looked forward to a handmade sandwich but it turned out to be a bad decision. The meat is pretty tasteless, the bread is 1-3 days old, the service or should we say interaction with staff is at the minimum and the facilities ready for a good clean or the museum. If you are out with ten friends and have had 10 beers then this place may just work. If this is your kind of place, hurry up as it looks like it is going to close any day.

old style bar and deli. Not fancy but they make great sandwiches and habve a fully stocked bar. Would definitely return

I understand this place is an institution so we decided to give it a go. I have to say the first impressions were not great. Decor is nothing to write home about and the place certainly doesn't give the impression of being very clean. The food consists of a variety of meats served with potatoes and gravy or you can have the meat in a sandwich. I had roast turkey breast which was very nice and the serving was huge. Unfortunately the serving was absolutely smothered in gravy which rather spoilt the meal. My wife had corned beef which she enjoyed. To sum up. The meat was great, service was rubbish, hygiene was questionable. Is that what makes an American institution?

After 30 years its still top of my list every time I visit SFO.. Great unpretentious sports atmosphere with good wholesome food, great beer selection still at at low prices.

My wife and I dined here and although the food was good the patina has worn from what was once a whimsical, fun place to eat old school deli to, "It's dirty in here", the artifacts have not been cleaned or refreshed since my last visit 25 years ago. The owner needs to pressure wash the inside of Tommy's joynt to make it not so "Nightmarish dirty surroundings." The food was good despite my wife's insistence on having her corned beef sliced from a fresh cut rather than an obvious and admitted yesterdays piece of meat. I had a pastrami sandwich and although the meat was very good, l the gigantic sourdough roll was too much. The famous "Pickle barrel" in the corner is suspect as to the freshness of the pickles. The neighborhood where Tommy's joynt is located is full of vagrants and has gone downhill steadily. If you can look past the interior screaming for a refresh, the food was good. I cannot recommend Tommy's Joynt on good conscious as a fun place to eat. It's like your once fun aunt has hit the retirement home and no effort is made to cheer her up. PS: Cash only!

Good hardy food that tasts delicious. The place has a unique charm, the meat is great and going up to the counter to order great hardy food is a great part of the experience.

Sorry but will not ever go back. Have been going every time in SF for 40 years. Now it is very run down and dirty and not the same place. We blame the city for letting the homeless take over

Visited this place with my wife whilst on a tour of California and the West and was one of the best eateries we came across. The bbq beef sandwich was exceptional and one of the best I have ever tasted. The place itself is pretty rustic and offers food and drink (not fine dining) with a very warm and welcoming atmosphere, frequented by lots of locals. Definitely the sort of place we would visit again. If anyone wants good food at a reasonable price we would recommend Tommy's Joynt

Found this place online before coming to the US, was looking forward to cocktails and a good fed. Four of us Arrived today (11 Aug) just before 6 PM, bar staff seemed to be off with the fairy’s , stood at bar for about 6-7 minutes while staff walked up and down not really doing anything. Tried to gain their attention and got all most a blank stare back, told her bad service and walked out

Went here as result of reviews on TripAdvisor. However wasn't amazed, I never went back. Went for a drink at the Bar, however the smell from food bar can be a bit off putting. Service was unusual as I'm sure barman is slightly deaf she. Ordering. However it sold good range of beer so enjoyed drink. Stayed for one. Won't rush back.

Stopped in on a whim and had a great couple of sandwiches. Fresh, like a lunch line with side choices. Its a local place, memorabilia hanging and a bar, it has great corned beef!. Liked it so much we went back, however there was none made that day.Opens at 10, but the meat comes out at like 1030. Good eats, but don't expect a fancy decor/atmosphere. Parking on the street.

Fun atmosphere, satisfying American food at affordable prices make this a wonderful stop during or after a day of sightseeing. Great tap beer selection accompany rib-sticking grub. Great value.

When I was new to San Francisco 34 years ago, somehow Tommy's found me within the first week of me arriving in The City. And it's always been a place that feels like home. And a place to take friends to as long as they're not vegetarians. Because Tommy's is all about the meat. Nothing fancy or fried. Just cooked perfectly, and sliced generously. There is also an enormous beer selection. I don't like beer, and never drink it. So I can't tell if the beer is any good or not. But I do know for a fact that their selection is enormous.

Delicious sandwiches and platters of roasted meats, yummy sides; eccentric/eclectic place; large portions for the price

We stopped in here on a whim. When I walked in expectations were not high. Had the meatball sandwich on sourdough with a Tommy Lager. I was very surprised and pleased.

Great concept of freshly cooked and carved joints, and a good range of draft beers, however, to run out of a specific beer (porter) and bread by 3pm seems careless to me. It has a good local reputation, just outside the main tourist areas, but we were disappointed we could not get our choices. Usually a great range of beers, meats and breads, but not on our visit.

outside looks classic. inside is authentic. counter service looked inviting. looked at sandwich board. i was going to get but saw pastrami instead. it was setved on a hoagie and was not hot. i was offered and declined the cheese. i wanted an authetic taste. i asked mustard. i paid 10 in cash, no cards accepted which was fine. i sounded a little high but i said nothing. later i looked at the receipt and was charged .27 cents above price on board. also charged for anag, i would preffered to be asked and would had declined. the there was a surcharge for sf healthy. i had not seen that before at other city rest. when i finally was to have my sandwich, the pastrami was cool, the roll hard and insulting with my mustard the last person had mayo. i also hot cheese that did not want nor pay for. i had small piece and through the cheese out. not a charming place, an ok place.

Classic sf spot if you want good bbq and a chill vibe love the music and people. Come and enjoy and don't forget the bar!

Great sandwiches and dinner platters. Great daily specials. Full bar. Counter service. Walk in, no parking

I have been to San Francisco about once a year for the past five years. Have always enjoyed coming here for both business and family reasons. Today my son and I came to Tommy's Joynt for a late lunch around 3 PM. There was no line and we had an opportunity to choose among the many items on the menu. I have followed the Tommy's Joynt Recipe for Lamb Shanks, but that is an item only available on Thursdays and we were there on a Sunday. Both my son and I had opted for the pastrami sandwiches, his with marinated tomatoes, and mine with cole slaw. All was excellent as were the pickles which were right at the end of the cafeteria line. The choices on the menu looked great, the beer selection varied, and all in all, it lived up to my expectations. Next time though, I will come back for the lamb shank.

I live in a city with no hofbrau. So when I walked into Tommy's and saw the carving station, it almost made me cry. Whole roasted turkey, roast beef, brisket, corned beef, pastrami. And Oh My God the sides. Mixed veggies, potato salad, coleslaw, a barrel of pickles to dig into. This place made me so happy, so comfortable, and so full. Highly recommended...

This place is great. Food was great, customer service was great, and the atmosphere was great. The sandwich was huge.. My teenager was not able to finish the 6inch. Worth every penny.

Been coming to SFO for over 25 years and this is greatest, and the cheapest, place to eat and drink in San Francisco. You queue up (wait in line) to order, collect and pay for your food-which is really amazing stuff; the huge sausage sandwich is $3.99. There is a voluntary tip jar on the counter. Go to the bar to fetch your own drinks; there is a waitress that will come up to you table and tell you off for doing it, but the bar staff don't mind as long as you 'chuck a buck' on the bar. Draught beer is around $5 a pint and a large glass of wine is under $3, which is considerably cheaper than their house wine by the bottle at $14.50- which is still a bargain at US wine prices. The menu is sufficiently varied for you to eat here every night; we even spent a very pleasant Sunday Afternoon in Tommy's Joynt, then back to the hotel for a 'kip'. Don't use a car in SFO, use the BART to get from the airport to Powell St, then get your MUNI Pass from the Transport Office just across the way from the BART Station. This is £33 for a 3 day pass and $43 for a 7, and with the Cable Cars being $7 a pop, it will save you a packet. Check out my other tips (not hacks) for more American Cities.

Beef brisket with BBQ sauce 👍🏻 we highly recommend this. There is a queue system in this quirky restaurant (we didn't need to queue) which tells me it gets busy at times. Staff were helpful for us first timers. Essentially, choose you meet which they carve to order, select your sides and away you go. Various sides available (we didn't enjoy our mash potato too much but maybe just because we really enjoy plenty of salt and butter!! Daily specials available and many people were choosing the sandwiches which looked amazing. There is an order out not for food on the right hand side when entering and a bar on the left. Pay for for food at the counter and then order drinks with the waitress and pay for them at the table. Tips on the tray are for the waitress - tips on the table are for the bus boy!

This landmark restaurant has not changed it's menu for over 75 years which tells you that they know what the public likes to eat. The hand-carved meat can't be beat along with the smiling cooks. They have a large bar crowd with over 100 Beers to choose from. It has a gritty feel to it but if you don't mind a little wear and tear on the decor you will fit right in. They have the best deli meats and side dishes in San Francisco. We had two large meals (no drinks) and our bill was $30. You will have to find street parking (meters turn off at 6:00 pm) which isn't too difficult. They are located on the corner of Geary and VanNess.

Great food, great range of beers and a real San Fran pub.. skip the ones down by the piers and try a proper place.. Eat beef and mash with 100 choices of beer with the locals.. It's worth seeking out..

We loved the whole experience at Tommy's. There's no frills, airs, or graces here just honest to goodness homestyle food served in generous portions. We each had the large plate which was a massive amount of food and exceptional value. Service was friendly. Would go back in a heartbeat.

Guy on DDD was right, it was a joint and it was good. Nothing fancy but it's good, reasonably priced, and a bar with ice cold beer. I'm not saying it's Carnagie Deli or Katz Deli in NYC but it's close and a fraction of the price. Heads up it's cash only.

We thought it would be same as Lefty's. But unfortunately it was not. The good was ok. Hope they will do better.

I went with my wife and brother in law for dinner at Tommy's and it was impressive. I had the BBQ and my wife had spaghetti and bison meatballs. Just walk in look up at the wall to see what's available (try to stop drooling and order. Drinks are served table side. The restaurant is on the corner of Geary Street and Van Ness Avenue. The 19 bus up Polk Street or the Geary Street bus will get you there. You'll be happy you went.

Headed here on first night as recommended by a friend - Allowed us to explore and eat when you have been travelling for a while. Good portions and good prices - Pleny of locals there which tells a story. Full of character and friendly staff

Had the mixed Dinner Platter with pastrami and brisket. It is HUGE...i think this rivals Katz Deli in New York. Taste is excellent with the mashed potatoes and beans. Ordered the chicken too with rice (soft and flavorful). The price is very reasonable too! Will come back next time i am in SF.... Cons, however, it is located off the beaten path....the roads are less pleasant at night.

Some of the best food we had in San Fran The meat is unbelievable, falls apart its so tender, prices are reasonable, atmosphere is great. Well worth a visit

Got there after midnight. I got a taste of some delicious pastrami and ordered a sandwich. Small portion on a stale roll. My daughter ordered a platter of same pastrami. Much larger portion. Canned baked beans and poor potato salad accompanied her pastrami. I am in a wheelchair. Bathrooms upstairs. No handicapped bathroom.

Food is cheap and fantastic, highly recommend a visit,it is straight across the road from the Opal Hotel.

We had the beef brisket dinner plate-it's enough for 2 persons to share. Homey taste. Fast and good service at the counter. Would definitely be back to try the corn beef.

Every time we are in San Francisco this is a must stop for lunch or dinner. You get a great portion and the food is amazing. Best ham and roast beef we have ever had. Cash only, Street parking. You order and get your food first then seat yourself, if you want alcohol you have to go to the bar yourself and they ask when you leave you clean up your table and drop your trays off at the bar.

We came here with family who live in the area. I had the corned beef with potatoes, husband had the brisket with mixed veggies. We each had a salad. The plates come with 2 sides and bread and are well priced at $13. Our daughter got the spaghetti, which she really didn't enjoy. Don't skip the pickles in a giant serve yourself vat!

We were told to make sure and eat here. It's a throwback, for sure. Remember though, cash only. I forget if there is an ATM. The food is good and priced very well. Everything is separate. Food you buy and get in one place, and then you sit down. Then you have a server who gets your drinks, separate check. It's unusual, but cool. The menu is varied and served quickly. Enjoyable atmosphere as it's unique. I would recommend it for lunch for sure.

We stopped by for diner and had 3 brisket plates with sides of mash, baked beans, green beans and tomato salad.. All absolutely delicious and sizeable plates too! No room for pudding 🍰! 😂 Thank you so much!

That meat is to die for. I can't put it in other words, it is quite possibly the best BBQ I've ever had.

Nothing gourmet just honest home cooking that will leave you with a full belly for the rest of the day and potentially send you into a food coma. Given the price of meals in the city can understand why there is a well worn path to Tommys. Great place if you want to satisfy your hunger with a traditional American feast. Beers are good prices too!

Heard about Tommy's from TA and Pinterest and decided we had to go. It's about a 15 minute walk from Union Station and only slightly dodgy. Food is counter style ordering and FAST. I had my first pastrami sandwich with Swiss and the meat melted in my mouth. Portions are generous and the prices are reasonable. The place is very kitschy and lively. The bar has a great selection of beers and other spirits. Definitely worth a visit if you want something old school SF and delicious.

Someone pinched my beer while me and my wife were putting music on the jukebox. That was annoying, but not important. Sandwiches were pretty good but not memorable. Nice enough place to grab a late night snack but food isn't special.

We stopped here for a bite to eat after traveling all day. They're open late and you can tell they make their food from scratch! Food was delicious, and reasonably priced. Only downfall is they accept cash only

Here is what to expect at Tommy’s. I’m from the Bay Area and finally got to visit Tommy’s. Ok...the room is a dump. And we LOVED it. Line up for food then find your table. The serving station sanitation looked a little unsavory to be honest, but that is part of the charm. San Francisco personality literally drips from the walls. My brother and I both had the corned beef plate. Delicious meats. Great beans. Mashed potato just OK. He is a frequent diner there and swears by the brisket too but it was sold out. The bar is classic dive. No service except the crusty guys serving up the food and the kid who cleared our plates when we were done. And as for price, you’d pay less in Omaha, but Van Ness Street in SF ain’t Omaha. Run, do not walk, to Tommy’s for good food and a big serving of SF.

I have been a customer for many years until the sandwiches got little meat and prices kepted going up. I was hungry when I left many times. For many years they gave a good helfty sandwich but not the last year or two. I saw a difference because I am a local and stopped by often. Please put a little more meat between the bread so we don't leave disappointed...The service is very nice and helpful to me.

After year's of enjoying the food at Tommy's Joynt, we were sad to visit the restaurant yesterday afternoon. Food was cold, meats were left on steam table too long. We understand ownership of the restaurant changed a short while ago and the new owner is unable to maintain the same level of food quality the prior owner kept. Too bad. Really wanted our experience to be good. We will not go back again.

Wen't here after reading about it as a great cheap meal in San Francisco. I didn't find the meal cheap, or good. The food quality was basically no different than what you would get at a cheap buffet restaurant. I ordered the roast beef platter and the buffalo chili. It was all pretty bland and disappointing.

Found this place when walking around the area. Food is served in a carvery type way and it is not bad at all. Has an old style feel about the place and also serves free water with meals, certainly a 1st for this city. It was quite busy when we visited, which created a great atmosphere. Drinks are reasonably priced and the service is good. I would recommend a visit, but early evening at the latest. The area around the restaurant is not great, streets are full of junked up professional beggars who can be quite aggressive.

Bar tender seemed put off by having to serve us🙄…the beer I wanted from the posted list was not available…cool local joint otherwise 🤷🏻♀️

Had lunch today with old classmate. First time at this place in a long long time I ejoyed a fresh carved turkey sandwich with a beer. I really liked the food and ambiance. I highly recommend it.

If I was to recommend a place to eat and drink then it would definitely be this place it was unbelievably busy serving a very good variety of food and drink after our sightseeing trips around San Francisco we headed here I would recommend anything on the menu especially the buffalo chilli.

A visit to Tommy's is a step back in time . ...it's an amazing experience.....I am not a lover of green beans but the ones here are outstanding ....it is worth every single dime I would highly recommend anyone to visit t the place ....I give it 5 stars thank you

I have dreams about you, Tommys Joynt. Mouthwatering, meaty, gravy dreams. And your buffalo stew has always been a gift to us modern Americans. This is, handsdown, the number one best hofbrau, I have ever been to.

The entrees (meats) were excellent, and obviously that's the real reason you're going here. The sides were okay; pretty average diner-style sides. The dinner rolls were literally not edible, but I'm sure they would make a good doorstop. Prices were excellent for how much food you get. The restaurant itself is a little dark, and it is a CASH ONLY business, which would be fine, if the ATM inside actually worked.

It was a cool place to visit. We just went for some drinks but it was not fancy at all. Quite dirty actually but the drinks are so very strong so you stop noticing.

This is a place that I had passed many times and I had seen it on DDD. We went for dinner and it was GREAT, The roast beef dinner was excellent and make sure and grab some pickles. They do not take credit cards so take some cash.

Such a cool place from the moment you pull up. If you're looking for In and Out burgers, keep on driving! What you get here is no frills, no fuss, served up fresh meats, delicious sides, a barrel of pickles, self serve water, and an old school bar! This place has survived the decades and it was a pleasure to sit in there for lunch. We got the BLT and the pastrami sandwiches and shared them to try both. Scrum! Totally recommend for some authentic San Fran grub.

Tommy's is simple and delicious!! It has an americana decor, and a nice bar with friendly staff and a very wide selection of local beers and very cheap house wine. Now the food... It's pretty epic to be honest. $10 gets you a full plate of juicy, deliciousmeat, gravy and the creamiest mash potato ever. If you think it's unhealthy, and to be fair, you wouldn't be alone in that school of thought, I'd recommend the walk from fisherman's wharf via lombard down to Tommy's the tough steep walk is worth the reward!

We had a family meal for 7 at This place, well what can we say, food, service and atmosphere was all big tick items. Fabulous food, pub style theamed place, very friendly service. Can see why this place is a bit of an institution in San Francisco. Was not expensive at all, prices was great. All round ticks on all fronts and a great place for a feed

Had seen this place on TV with Guy Fieri so decided to eat there. The food that I ate was good and we had to wait on ourselves so service was not an issue but the food was not near as good as I expected from the TV show.

It's been years since I've been to Tommy's Joynt which was a big deal when I was a university student... times have changed... the new place is not charming, the energy of the serves is low (no smiles), and the food didn't look appetizing. I opted for soup. It was disappointing, smothered in salt, so I didn't finish it. I am grateful to have any food when there are so many homeless in the neighborhood. In any event, glad I tried the "newer" Tommy's. It is located across from Sutter Health where I went for a seminar afterward.

This place is an institution. The carving station for sandwiches is awesome as well as they have hot plates. This is a must go to place.

It has years since I ate here and I am happy it is still going strong. I ordered the pastrami sandwich on sourdough with tomatoes plus a side order of potato salad. Everything was FANTASTIC. The juices from the pastrami gave my tummy somersaults. Yum!

Came here for lunch today based on Guy Fiori Triple D recommendation, so glad we did. Old school meat sandwiches, we also had a side of mashed potatoes and Cole slaw. Generous portions and phenomenal taste! The experience is just as good, order in line, grab a table, old and rustic. Glad we came.

Great food! Great value! Awesome customer service! Patient staff explained everything even with a line behind us. This place is a must in tour foody stop!

This place is unique. One side is a bar with drinks, and the other is food. For the food you wait in line and order off the small menu. Typically its some meat and a couple side dishes. Then you choose if you want more sides or dessert. They put everything on a tray for you, you pay, then sit down. Its like a glorified cafeteria. All the meats are really good, tender, and the portions are big. Staff is friendly, but not overly helpful if you want details. This is a great place to come after you have been drinking. Parking only along the street.

I know this is a "Hofbrau", but seriously. I popped in June 30th of this year. I was in the area and thought, heck I'll just get a sandwich. When I realized they were charging for "lettuce" (who does that), I changed my plan and went with a Sausage plate (reasonable enough, $10 w/2 sides). Sounds good, right ~ wrong, it was HORRIBLE ! Bratwurst of some sort had been sitting in tepid water, so sausage was neither hot or flavorful. In fact, it was sopping wet from sitting in the water for goodness knows how long. So when you cut into it, water just squired out all over my compostable paper plate. The mashed taters and gravy were good, but again, just "warm", not hot. Don't even get me started on the "baked beans", seriously, what a joke. More like Van Camps Pork and Beans. Appreciated the "cold roll" to soak up the gravy, but again, ice cold. Tourists, stay away, it's not what it used to be, IMP!

After running 13.1 miles in the Rock & Roll 1/2 Marathon, what better place to gobble down some comfort grub!!! The Rib Roast was so tasty!!! Love the eclectic feel this place has...A must do with in SF...

Visited this 'joynt' with our friends who live just outside of San Francisco. It was unique. We had corned beef and pastrami sandwiches. Very good. Not for everyone, no table service you order at the counter and bring the food to your table, but we had no problem with this. We didn't have drinks (it was noon), but they had, what appeared to be a very well stocked bar. This place looks like it's been there a very long time. Worth the trip. (Bathrooms are up a steep flight of stairs, not for the faint of heart or handicapped person.)

Ran across Tommy's Joynt through a Google search. My companion and I were looking for a good midday meal, but didn't want fast food and didn't want to have to take out a loan to pay for the meal. Tommy's Joynt hit the spot. The pastrami and corned beef, carved off the briskets as you watch, were to die for. The accompaniments were excellent. I would recommend this place for either lunch or dinner.

When on business trips to the city, I like to visit Tommy's for dinner. This last time I had a turkey dinner. It came with a salad, dressing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and the guy just kept piling the turkey white meat on the plate. It was more than I could eat for $14. It has a very casual atmosphere with checkered tablecloth picnic tables. You choose your own table, and you may end up sitting with someone you don't know, but probably will before the meal is over. You can also sit at the bar to eat as long as you order a beverage for the bar. I only wish they accepted credit cards, but maybe that's what keeps the price down.

As an international this place was a bit unusual for me. You walk in and there is a carvery at the front with a variety of meats/salads etc and then a dining area and bar to enjoy them in. Overall the food was excellent (much better than i would expect from this kind of place in Australia). Staff were friendly, prices were cheap - definitely worth a visit!

How do I know they serve the World's Best Turkey Leg? I don't, but I know they've been serving them for over 50 years! I enjoyed my first one in 1964 and my latest one in July 2017, so I'm clearly somewhat biased. Unfortunately, the turkey legs are now only available on Tuesdays. Nevertheless, dining at Tommy's Joynt is a truly unique culinary experience. Even the complementary pickles are as crisp and tart as I remember them.

If you like meat. If you like sandwiches. If you like history. If you like interesting settings. If you like all the above, this is your go to place.

Been here twice and I will keep coming back as long as they don't change. Brisket and Pastrami is delicious. Side of coleslaw and sourdough bread. Parking is hard so I recommend after 5:30 when everyone has left their work. Park on either side of Van Ness Blvd if you can find a meter. The atmosphere here is unique, and the food is really good.

this was recommended by our tour manager,it was quite a surprise, totally different from other restuarants , but in a good way ,it was very homely and welcoming ,food was very good I had buffalo stew which was great , my wife had turkey wings and she thoroughly enjoyed it , portions very large , great atmosphere ,and the prices were very reasonable

After suffering the indignity of harsh condescending attitudes from uninteresting self-impressed people at a dark, cramped place with $16 olives (or similar) and hard wood seating, my husband and I wandered hungry and dejected into this warm, glowing place with history, comfort and people being real. Oh, the food? YUM. Filling, satisfying, gratifying and tasty.

If you like lamb you will live their lamb shanks which is a Thursday special. The best l have had and such an unique place to go.

Think funky restaurant/bar on acid with LOW prices and GOOD food. Can't miss the gaudy painted building at California and Geary. Been a few years since I was there but it hasn't changed at all. Step inside, view the extensive overhead wall menus, then get in the cafeteria line and let them know your choices. I like that the staff prepares your plate rather than the public play with the food. Pay at the end of line, grab weapons, a glass of water and find a seat. Server will come by for drink order. Leave tray and dirty dishes for them to clear. Most dinners are under $13. I had the Sat special of corn beef and cabbage with boiled potatoes and a roll for $9.75. A lot of tasty food for that price. They also have sandwiches, burgers, soups, salads and deserts.

This is an iconic place in SF. Has been in operation 70+ years. We had the barbecue brisket which was fantastic! Sides of potato salad and cole slaw were house made and great, as well. Definitely not a fancy place. Looks like it has not been renovated in 50 years. Prices are great and portions of delicious food are large. We’ll go back while here on vacation. Cafeteria style service; limited menu.

A group of us dropped in for dinner & drinks and they did a great job....funky interior had a nice local bar vibe going. The BBQ brisket was delicious and cheap; and their beer list is awesome - seriously worth the visit alone for their range of local and global beers... Recommended!

Inside is cool but food was weak. Shoe leather meat, lumpy partially cooked “mashed” potatoes, and canned green beans. Maybe other stuff on the menu is better? I won’t bother going back to find out.

I love this place. Got into town late, was beyond hungry and not much was open. Our concierge recommended this place. Absolutely loved it! We ended up eating here every night. Awesome food...huge portions...and very inexpensive. SF is so expensive and we got out over here for just over $30 for two meals and a beer.

As Small busy place where you are greeted by the aroma from the steam table full of homemade comfort food. Mostly local clientele and friendly staff to help with the large selection. I’ll go back.

Wanted to try a different place in "The City" instead of the usual wharf fare during our visit. Checked out Tommys online and hofbrah food sounded great. As we approached Tommys, my husband and daughter mistakenly thought we were heading to Mel's across the street--I told them that we were going to Tommys Joynt. We entered Tommys and I liked the kitschy bizarro atmosphere. There were three guys behind the counter talking. One left and the other two continued adjusting things behind the counter and talking. The second guy left. Still no eye contact or acknowledgement. Finally the remaining guy said, "give me a minute." My husband took off for the bathroom. By the time he got back the guy once again said "give me a minute," and cut a piece of meat off of a turkey for no apparent reason. He finally asked for our order. Ordered 3 turkey sandwiches with 3 sides--rice, coleslaw, and dressing. He forgot the coleslaw which is fine when I saw he was not doing the sides that came with the combos and instead doing huge sides at over $3.00 each. Came to over $38.00 for three sandwiches and two sides. Was told I would have to head over to the bar to get our sodas. Took our food over to a table, then I headed over to the corner of the bar. The bartender was standing at the middle of the bar where he chose to ignore me. Walked over to get in his face. Ordered our drinks, paid and then waited whilst he went from one to the other registers trying to get one to work. Finally got my change. Sat down. Took a bite of my sandwich and literally gagged on the driest piece of turkey I have ever had. I had to swig soda with each bite. My daughter liked the rice, but not the sandwich. Husband didn't like the sandwich or the dressing. I asked him what was wrong with it--tastes "off"--"rancid." The place is kitschy, but kinda run down looking. I see good reviews for it--maybe we hit it on a bad day--but We will not need to try this place again and in hindsight I wished we had gone to Mel's Diner instead.

Carvery service was slick, to the point of feeling rushed, no fish option so as a non meat eater I had baked potato and salad. Kids enjoyed their food and drinks service was fine. Atmosphere was good but not exactly family friendly.

If you like managing your meal, this is not your place. Whatever you order, the line cooks are like robots and just shove the food on the plate. No conversation. No questions about what type of meat you might like, etc. Also, the food was soooo bland!!! No flavor at all, which explains why they have so many condiments (mustard, horse radish, salt, pepper, etc.) on the tables. And, it is NOT cheap for what you are getting. I actually changed my rating after I started writing this. Originally, I had it as average, but then while writing, I'm thinking, "this is not a review for average, it's a review for poor." There used to be a great coffee shop directly across the street, but when they closed, more people started trying Tommy's...one word, "DON'T".

This place is an institution. If you're in the area you must try it. Great food and drink. A little something can be found from around the globe.

Meat was delicious. Plenty to eat. Only complaint I prefer my gravy to be thicker (personal preference). Staff friendly

Eat at Tommy's several times a week for more than 30 years. Good food nice atmosphere and good beer/wine etc.

We decided to go out for Thankgiving dinner this year instead of cooking at home. After many searches, Tommy's Joynt offer Thankgiving dinner dine-in or take-out which includes choices of turkey, five sides mashed potatoes, gravy, stuffing, salad, pumpkin pies, bread for $32 plus tax. We waited inline for 1 hours to get a table which was worth the wait. Ham was offer with turkey for $5 more. Everything was very delicious!

Tommy's Joynt is located on the corner of Geary and Van Ness street in San Francisco downtown area. Be ready to wait in line for at least 10-15 minutes to place your order. I never had a more testier Roast Beef sandwich in my entire life. Prices are very reasonable for the size of Sandwich you get. For less than 10 $ you can select the cut you like and get a fully loaded Roast Beef Sandwich. There are other selections of meet and Turkey cuts, but my favorite is the Roast Beef. The joint is very old, decoration is very unique and pleasant the place is a landmark in San Francisco. If you are ever in San Francisco, don't miss it highly recommended.

An inexpensive restaurant that has been around for the longest time, this place serves some of the best homestyle cooking. Their beef brisket is mouth-watering. The pastrami and Roast beef are also worth the wait. The bonus... it's open until 1:30 a.m.

We got the corn beef and the pastrami sandwiches, they were both delicious. Good quality, low budget food and such a great atmosphere. Everything that came out looked great! I’ll be back!

I watched a YouTube video with Andy and he doesn’t look like a guy that goes to cafes really often but this one looked so decant So we decided to try it . And it was not a mistake . Extra ordinary design and style of this place made me to stay there and of course the huge pieces of meat that are laying on the display . All of us had the same thing : Tuesday special pulled pork . The portions are huge and taste just awesome . This spot looks like a local place but I would recommend it to everyone, cause it’s great .

Got there at 7, before they close at 8. Staff was not friendly when ordering, got the food and went to sit down. Another guy was staring at us and when we sat down he got upset because we sat at a table he apparently just cleaned and had to clean again afterwards. He said his frustrations out loud. Bartender lady was not nice, asked her about history and pointed at the wall of a picture without explaining and walked off. Food was dry and cold, biscuit was hard as a rock, staff was horrible. First time in SF and this was a much anticipated stop, but next time in SF we will not be going back….ever! Overall a horrible experience!

I had walked by this place and had waited for the bus outside many times and had been told it is a SF institution but it took a long time for the timing and mood to be right. Definitely plays its history up well. And if you like meat and potatoes it is a destination for good food. You line up for it so quicker than most places. Only a few beers on tap but they really do have an incredible selection of bottled beers. The bottled Ukrainian beer was wonderful. Great prices for the beer and good prices for the food.

We were in San Francisco to get some paperwork done. Looking for a bite to eat near the Queen Anne Hotel we came across Tommy's Joint. It is more or less a barbeque place. The meats were good and the sides were okay. Got plenty of food for a very low end price in San Francisco. Not too far from Union Square.

Had evening food here and the food was great 😁 I had the bbq brisket, mashed potatoes and gravy and my partner had a bbq brisket sandwich - both absolutely delicious 😁 The only draw back was getting a drink - I couldn't get the attention of the bar person and when seated we had eaten our food before we were asked if we wanted a drink - we had already found the water by that point so all was good and didn't need to buy a drink 😁 Would recommend 😁

Really enjoyed this bar. A number of good beers and not too expensive. Very friendly staff too. And the food? Absolutely brilliant but very cheap. Highly recommended

Probably not everyones cup of tea but I love grabbing an early meal and a few beers from their nice selection at this place. Inner city with rustic interior and at times patrons, but I always feel comfortable. Probably fine but not really sure this is a place I would say "bring my kids" though. Very generous portions for the money of carved meat served deli style. I had the beef stew and it was delicious. Downed it with a cold draft. Nothing fancy but genuinely authentic. Service was very friendly.

Looks like an event - proper American meat and gravy joint. Great brisket and mash, the bbq beans tasted amazing and smelled fantastic the day after too.

Lovely welcome , big portions, very tasty. Authentic San Francisco experience. Met people that had been coming for decades and love the food.

We arrived in San Francisco today. Looking for a nice place with a student like ambient, decided for this place. Food is great, good draft beer, nice people around. It is definitely a place to get back.

We love Tommys Joynt. The food is consistently excellent. I especially love the corned beef....always super lean and tasty. My father went to Tommys Joynt in the 40's. Nice to know something's don't change.

Meats cooked to melt in the mouth standards, heaps of veg or sale/ pots. Limited menu but allows them to serve hearty portions and good food, obviously locals favourite as was continually busy and for San Francisco prices a positive steal. Looks a bit daunting from outside but all staff and customers are great. If in area definitely go.

Good comfort food, prices are decent considering the area. We flew in late afternoon and were so hungry and went here on a whim. Good thing b/c we went in and got our food immediately. Big portions, good selection, not fancy by any means but definitely had that homemade taste. We left full and satisfied! Give this place a chance. Plus I think it's a place for the locals if you are interested in that kind of thing.

Service reminded me of school lunches; queue and get your tray of whatever you're having. Serving is superefficient, a little confusing if it's your first time there. Once you have your food, there are more quiet places in the back if you find the main room too noisy. Food was good. Huge servings.

Tommy's Joynt is an excellent example of the California Hofbrau -- distantly related to the German beer hall with lots of beer and very reasonable prices. Food service is more like a German beer garden with a quick moving cafeteria style section; drinks are servved to your table. >>>> A veggetarian won't starve, maybe, but this is a meat palace. Big servings of beef, turkey and a roast of the day compete for plate space with a good range of side dishes. We almost never leave food on a table, but a half dish of really good potato salad went begging. >>>> There's plenty of beer and includes some local brews. It's not a beer bar that can compete with the myriad of breweries and multi-taps, but there are decent choices, and the bargain priced Anchor Steam must turn over quickly -- it was as fresh and tasty as it was at the Anchor Public Taps. >>>>> Another big plus for the place is that it stays open really late -- you can get a meal here at 1AM and in sleepy San Francisco, that's four hours after many other restaurants have shut off thier burners. >>>> I'd have returned the following night for more of the same-- with a different meat maybe-- but my wife thought there might be other restaurants in San Francisco. She was right, sort of, but this will be the first stop on our next trip. ---Bob & Ellie Tupper, authors, “Drinking In the Culture, Tuppers’ Guide to Exploring Great Beers in Europe.”

We have always made Tommy's Joynt a "must visit" whenever we are in San Francisco. However, the last time we were there will be the last. My friend had the buffalo stew and it had a sour taste as if it had been in the refrigerator for a week. He couldn't eat it and ended up throwing it in the trash. As for me, the biggest insult came when I asked for "gluten free" bread. The guy behind the counter said "no problem". He forgot to tell me that when I paid for the lunch they were going to charge me an extra dollar for two slices of stale gluten free bread that I couldn't even eat. In addition, the pastrami was so full of fat that I had to pick out the little pieces of meat that were in there and share it with my friend since he had paid for his lunch that went into the trash. And, yes, the pastrami also tasted as if it was days past a serve date. How could this place that used to be so good go downhill so fast? And how could they have the nerve to charge an extra dollar for two slices of stale gluten free bread. Needless to say, we are never going back. To charge extra money for stale bread should never had happened and we're sorry that they lost us as customers, I wonder how much extra it would have cost if my friend had asked for something special like rye bread or a few small rolls.

This is one of the oldest bars in San Francisco... maintains the old look... drinks are great... serves traditional food.. if you are a meat eater you will love this place.. service levels average as they have so much business...

Somebody had told us to go to Tommy's Joynt while we were in San Francisco for their brisket sandwich and I'm glad we did! The meat was cut right in front of us and the BBQ dipping sauce was to die for. The side dishes were all good and don't forget to grab some free pickles. Cash only for the food but the bar takes credit cards. Would definitely go back, it was very authentic

The food is great. Meat and sides well cooked. The decoration is Us style. Very good atmosphere and prices affordable

Tommy's Joynt will fill you up all day long! We ordered an excellent brisket sandwich with Swiss cheese on sourdough bread, in addition to a turkey leg with mashed potatoes. The turkey leg was a bit dry, but the sandwich and side dish were fantastic. Cash only.

the only thing I can say about the restaurant, when we went to this restaurant was the barmaid she got us our drink and she was very polite and courteous, other than - maybe they were Mexican, waiter maybe Latin American waiter, I think, they think everybody that speaks English is American, well you should look up history books we are actually a mixture of Australian, Scottish and Irish.we went in and asked for a seat all he could do is point upstairs and completely ignores us,then we were informed by the kind waitress that you have to go down and get the food yourself, let me start by saying the food was not good, the beef was too tough the mashed potato was too watery and all the food was swimming in gravy, the bread rolls that they gave you were hard, the food reminded me of my school dinner days it was not good, tasteless ,we were going to go, because the food was so bad. We spend $120 in there that included the drinks, I will repeat myself the food was s#####,and the waiters should learn some manners not everybody that speaks English is American.

I went into Tommys Joint today, stood by the food counter to order food. The two servers were talking to each other and ignored me. I waited a few minutes to order, they kepted talking . I am disabled and couldn't stand there much longer, so I left. It was 4:00 pm and place was empty, no line. I felt bad I didn't get food service.Sorry, do a better job.

tommys joynt is a good San Francisco tradition, i have bin eating at tommys for many years now, foods good but a little high for what you get, im skinny but can eat a lot, i will still continue to eat there but if there going to keep raising prices they need to give you more for the buck, i know every thing is so expensive here, the prices our way out of line in San Francisco for every thing, any way give it a try, its worth it for special accusations, watch the times you go, there is usually a waiting line cause the food is good, try the Buffalo stew, yumm.

Your th.anksgiving Turkey dinner was dried. No juice.once i got home and trying to eat it it as drie loke a rock.and i have to give to the homeless pepole.

From what I understand, the place is an institution and a must-go. Decor is quirky and cool, staff was friendly and althoughwe didn’t drink, the bar offerings looked like a well-stocked and eclectic mix of things. So, the food. Little confused about the great reviews for the barbecue specifically- some of these folks need to go to Texas and taste the good stuff, because frankly, this wasn’t it. Tender and moist (good), but not any flavor at all. Like, zero. Pastrami was very fatty, veggies and sides were all quite bland (the clam chowder had literally NO taste- how is that even possible?). Everything was just okay- not good or great. Cool place but since we went to eat (rather than drink), I can’t really recommend it.

So glad we decided to eat here. 1 of the highlights of our vacation to S.F. Food was delicious and reasonably priced. We would definitely visit again.

Found this place on a walk around SFO. Looks like a bit of a no go bar. When you get inside still same feeling but spend 5 mins in there and you see it is an all American bar with locals and visitors mixing well. Nice selection of Beers. As for the food its good home cooking a meat lovers choice of cuts. All at a good price. A mot enjoyable evening.

On the Van Ness Geary corner can you find this place since decades. It is so good, that it's still working. Hopefully nobody wants to buy this parcel!!!

We met up with our Metallica Family at Tommys Joynt. I have to say the atmosphere is welcoming, the food was amazing. The over all place was great to meet hundreds of Metallica fans. I totally recommend coming to check it out, even the manager even came to chat it up.

When you visit San Francisco, I would highly recommend a visit to Tommy's Joynt. This is an authentic "hole in the wall" place and we all know that the best place to eat is most times that little hole in the wall place. You order and watch as they carve whatever kind of meat you order and see the juices escape as they carve. I don't care whether you order a sandwich or a platter, you will not be disappointed. I want to make sure you know that their are 5 star restaurants that I will bypass to get here. Quaint seating and food that excites the palate. Whatch them carve that meat and your mouth begins to water as the anticipation mounts knowing that in just moments I will be exposing my taste buds to meal "fit for a king".

Late lunch, queued with others for our dish behind the hot counter. Two guys working hard to satisfy you, carving meats and supplying the sides. Amazing place, great craft beers too. Amazing atmosphere. The turkey dinner was superb.

Nothing is more San Francisco than Tommy's Joynt, the legendary hofbrau joint on Van Ness Avenue in the heart of the city. The fact that it's not only a hofbrau with freshly cut meat plates and sandwiches and a sports bar only adds to the classic kitsch. For only $12.90 you can get a hearty dinner plate of a main dish plus your choice of mashed potatoes, vegetables, salad or beans along with a choice of bread. We came on a Monday evening after a evening movie. A basketball game was playing in the background as they had decent deals on house wine for all to enjoy. I decided to go with a glass of water which like everything else including silverware was a serve yourself kind of atmosphere. A friend and I couldn't decide what we wanted to go with in terms of dinner. Everything sounds good, and the cuts looked decent on that carving station line. My friend went with the BBQ Brisket of Beef while I went with the Corned Beef. I was glad with the cut of beef I got especially since it was doused in warm brine and the gravy on the mashed potatoes was nice and thick. Mind you it comes with no veggies if you don't order them and the bread roll, well clearly has been sitting there. Could it have been better and fresher? Sure, it could have been. It's almost as if there were so many options on their menu, from sandwiches to dinner plates, including soups and varied dishes like oxtail, the staff can't seem to focus on doing one thing very good versus many things just average. And after all these years they're still a cash only place in San Francisco, despite the many technological advances made in this world. And if you're a vegetarian, well you would better off sitting this place out. But still, nothing beats a classic, and anyone who goes to Tommy's Joynt everyday until 1:30 a.m. will satisfy their late night carnivorous cravings, still a no-frills hofbrau that's been doling out big portions of brisket, pastrami sandwiches, and lamb shanks since the 1940's, and I'm sure not much has been updated in the interior. Foodies need to stop sticking our noses up and to start celebrating that they're still alive and kicking.

Good and cheap food. Tipico American Restaurant, many options to eat and drink. I liked, new experience.

Good food at reasonable prices served by friendly staff. Good selection of beers and the locals were friendly.

Had the pastrami on rye and it was better than any I've ever had -- and I live near and go to New York a lot. The hot mustard is unbelievably hot: taste it before you spread a lot on your sandwich as I did, and regretted. The free pickles are excellent and the price is right. EXCELLENT lunch!
Diamond in the rough
This place looks like a dive, inside and out. Don't let that fool you, the food was excellent. Fun atmosphere with a rustic vibe. This will be my new favorite bay area restaurant/bar.
