Amazing soul food and service, perfect!

By 502ericaf |

I am in love with the soul good. It is soul good!!!! This restaurant is right across the street from the hotel I am staying at, they only open for lunch it seems cause I never see them open past 5 pm. I can here on a Sunday for some soul fun and food escapades and what a pleasant surprise. A fun atmosphete great staff, they have the right amount of staff and they are so hospitable and cool! Even the staff in the carving board was amazing they made sure we ate a lot and had fun. They have a brunch Sunday that is about 23 dollars and separately you can add the bottomless mimosas ( they have several flavors) for an extra 18 dollars. They also have a desert bar. All around perfect really. They had some great live music with a cool and fun artist who even came sat with us for a bit to talk about life hehe it was a cool environment really fun. I loved the food and the service. I am making sure to come back here before u leave Texas that is for sure !

Sunday Brunch

By Dolores D |

Live music is good just too loud to carry on conversation. You go thru a buffet line. For my money food is better and more economical at other soul food restaurants on the east side of SA!

9 mile walk well worth it!

By deloresw461 |

Tony G's was recommended by our Lyft driver. We stayed at the Embassy Suite River walk. We decided we would walk to the restaurant. The food portions were plentiful enough to take home for later. The wait staff was attentive, and very friendly. We definitely come again.

Real good food for the soul

By @ tyriekh2022 |

My wife and me dined here yesterday 12/142022 for brunch. First off let me tell you that upon walking in, could feel the positive energy. They had soothing jaZZ music from the band that ran through my body and brought me joy. Our server Sonny was very kind, good knowledge with menu and kept coming back to check on us. My OX tails were impressively cooked to perfection, I wanted to go back for seconds however I was just plain ole stuffed after my first serving. The Catfish was also tasty and the eggs and bacon were as fresh as from the farm. I will definitely come again on future visits to SA and will tell my friends to try it out if they come here. Loved supporting a GREAT black owner biz.

Soul Food at it’s best, live music bonus

By baritone-g |

Went for Sunday Brunch. Both the cabbage and the collard greens were some of the best that I have ever had! Chicken was crisp and juicy, grits were creamy, and salad was fresh. Live music added to the festive atmosphere. This will be destination dining anytime I’m in San Antonio.

Yummy!

By Tlterry123 |

So my husband and I were on a search for local food and came to Tony G’s. Let me just the neighborhood seems a little run down and seedy but walking into this place you’d never know it. Nice setting, clean, great staff, and great music playing. Now the food......baby!!! The smothered chicken, collard greens, Mac n cheese, country fried chicken, mashed potatoes, baked beans, and red kool-aid (memories) were everything. The only thing I didn’t really care for were the blackeyed peas. The flavor was good but they were a little too crunchy for my liking. We will definitely be back!!!

Great food.

By Berry316 |

This place had great food and good atmosphere. Only downside is the parking situation. Had to park 2 blocks away. Also the pancakes were a little dense. Could've been more light and fluffier. But other than that great food.

Visited their other location

By waterdance |

I visited there other location. I was not impressed. I was told they were about to close the location. I love soul food. I came in to get airmiles points since they are on most of the airlines dining programs. However, their credit card machine did not work. Some of the food looked like it was sitting around. Service to get drinks took a while. I'll probably give them another chance at this main location. But so far its been average. The main location is usually crowded with limited parking.

Best Real Soul Food

By whatsleft2do |

We arrived hoping to grab breakfast, instead left stuffed and happy with a "truly got our money's worth" buffet luncheon experience serenaded by smooth jazz live music. This is a MUST DO when in SA. Nestled near the Lone Star Pavilion and St.Paul square area, the restaurant is bright and cheerful. Staff is friendly and proudly share the story of the place beginnings and owners. The food is real throwdown southern cooking...smothered chicken, red river fried catfish, gumbo, collards, mac n' cheese, jambalaya, cornbread topped with peach cobbler, (mouth salivating just thinking about it!)

Soul Food in SAT?

By Ovalfire |

I was born in Manhattan, a stone throw from Harlem. I'm Hispanic, but I was raised on a cultural diverse cuisine. We ate Black food, white food, Latin food, Asian, you name it, my dad cooked it. When I go to SAT, I want either TexMex or BBQ, that's it. But our local friends took me here & I had a Ratatouille moment! I had the ox tails & in just one bite I wanted to slap someone! Cuz it made no sense how good it was! It took me back, way back. Back into time. It's must now on every trip

Good food great atmosphere but get there early on Sundays !

By Derrick B |

We ate at Tony G's on a Sunday, for Sunday Brunch we arrived in the afternoon at about 2:30. We were seated promptly and was greeted by our waitress, the seeting is tight, the food was good, and the atmosphere was great with live music. They ran out of mac/cheese, and dinner rolls. The food is good but, I recommend you to arrive early to enjoy everyting.

Great breakfast spot

By Debby B |

Me and some friends were in town for NYE and came across Tony G’s. Breakfast was wonderful and there’s a full bar and we were able to get bloody Mary’s.

Breakfast is Worth the Visit

By Mars Blackman |

Four out of the six people in our group agreed the cheese grits are the best they ever had. The other two one was a six year old kid and me....I wanted the pancakes....It was worth the stop. Its oe of the places when I am in San Antonio againit will get a drop by....

Not like it used to be

The atmosphere was really good as the musicians did an amazing job. Service was nice........the food was not up to par for $22 a plate.

Relaxing Jazz and great food

By Janet S |

We got their about 11 o’clock but the jazz band was amazing. About an hour later the crowd started to pour in. The jazz band is awesome and very interactive. The food was great. I even asked them to make me a fresh waffle due to the waffles on the buffet getting cold fast. They gladly assisted me.

Hanging out with famiy

Got in town wanted Soul Food. We had two choices so I chose Tony's and won. the staff was very nice when we walked in. They realized we were new. Everything we had was good. Fried chicken, meat loaf, cat fish vegetables, down to the corn bread muffins.

Unacceptable Service

By Melissa O |

According to the website the restaurant opens at 8am on Saturday. I called at 7:58am to place a to go order and was told they don't open for 10 minutes and that I need to call back and was hung up on. I waited for 10 minutes then called back a couple times and they didn't answer the phone. We were walking to the Alamodome so we decided to just stop in. When we arrived there were a total of 3 tables seated. When we said we needed to place an order to go, The waiter told us he would get to us when he could. We waited another 5 minutes before he acknowledged us to take our order. When we placed our order, unprovoked, the waiter said, sorry for not answering your call, I'm running around like a chicken with my head cut off. Keep in mind there were 3 tables seated and this waiter just admitted to not answering the phone knowing it was us trying to place a to go order. We ordered 2 breakfast tacos at 8:10am and waited until 8:30am before they finally came out. To his credit, the waiter said he was only charging us for 1 taco, however, both tacos were prepared incorrectly from what we ordered. I could understand and accept this type of service if the restaurant was slammed, but with 3 tables seated, the attitude of the waiter was unacceptable. I hope management can rectify these types of situations before it's too late. We come to the Alamodome every year for the state tournament and the location of Tony G's is great and we planned on giving them lots of business going forward. Unfortunately this is no longer the case.

Delicious soul food

By poppazo |

The service was great and the servings were large, restaurant was busy but we were seated right away and didn’t take long to get food.

A Sunday brunch must!

By Lisa H |

The service, the cocktails, the food & the music were outstanding! Jesse took amazing care of us, and I cannot tell you how much fun we had. I cannot imagine finding anyplace else to spend a Sunday afternoon!

Great Sunday brunch! Incredible food, great service, bottomless mimosas and fab live jazz music. Don’t miss this spot!

By lisa s |

The Sunday brunch buffet is incredible! Prime rib, shrimp, all the breakfast foods, fried chicken, meatloaf and great southern sides. Great food, service and live jazz music. My new favorite spot in SA! Don’t miss it.

Lunch on weekday

By Guills3 |

Food is good but service sucked. They did not have enough staff to deal with the lunch crowd. We got there around noon, waited for about 25 min to get seated, another 15 min to even get a menu then the food took forever to get done after waiting about 15 min to get our food order. It was almost 3 pm by the time we left the place. We joked about maybe ordering dinner now so we won't have to wait so long if we didn't get our lunch any time soon.

Great comfort food

By Bill C |

Went here with several friends specifically for the soul food. It is located in St. Paul's Square across the freeway from downtown. Parking is a little tricky. There is a free parking lot at the south end of Hoefgen toward the Alamodome about a block from the restaurant. The atmosphere is very casual, and the staff is exceptionally friendly and courteous. The menu has an extensive selection of soul and Cajun food. We chose the lunch buffet which had a great variety of delicious home-cooking comfort food. Definitely worth the trip.

Great meal

By Enjoying_Life360 |

I had the jambalaya and it was as close to southern Louisiana as your are going to get. It was just down right perfect. Geaux Tony G's! The green were also excellent. I will return.

Good chicken and waffles!!

By Geoff W |

The chicken and waffles were excellent. The chicken was topped with country gravy and there was a side of warm syrup for the fluffy waffles! Delish!! Hit the spot! My friend had the Creole breakfast with the catfish, eggs and biscuit. Highly recommended!

Huge Portions - Try the Fried Chicken!

By 2fromTX |

A good lunch option near Downtown in a part of the city that is starting to gentrify (for better or worse), come here for lunch and you won't leave hungry. I wouldn't classify it as a "hole in the wall" because inside it's actually quite modern and well maintained, with slick decor and quick service. Prices are decent and the chicken is really good. I'll definitely go back. For Covid, they require masks and have a sanitize station when you walk in, but some of the tables are pretty close together. There is a small outside patio n front, but it wasn't being used the day we were there at lunchtime.

Home cooking done right

By Grant H |

Friendly staff, good menu, lots of things to choose from. Lunch entre includes 3 sides. I had meatloaf with creole gravy (it wasn’t too spicy), collard greens, green beans, Cajun fries, corn bread. My friend had the smothered pork chop, collard greens, mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, corn bread. The portions were large, dinner size, so you will struggle to finish or just plan on taking half home. Everything was very good, except the pork chop (she said it was “tough”, overcooked?). Overall a good meal, reasonably priced, friendly service. I've been back several times and have had most everything on the menu and all good so far.

Family this gots to b the best soul food n San Antonio

Texas Southern Soul Food

By Leri L |

I visited with a group of coworkers for lunch. Resturant features a buffet and menu items. Very nice atmosphere and food was good.

Sunday Jazz Brunch

By Susan C |

Went for Sunday Jazz Brunch the food was good and the Band was good. I would recommend this place. The price reasonable.

Too Salty!!!

By Tawana |

My husband saw this restaurant on one of the morning shows while we were visiting. We decided to give it a try. The restaurant was very cute, clean and styled with an industrial feel. Our waitress was very friendly. They even had Kool-Aid on the menu. I ordered the smothered pork chop in onion gravy, mashed potatoes, mac & cheese and fried cabbage. The pork chop and cabbage were so salty I felt my chest tightening and my insides drying up from all the salt. I scraped all the crust off and discovered that the pork chop itself was what was salty. The only thing I finished eating was my mashed potatoes and my drink. I’m not opposed to eating here again I just hope that my next meal isn’t as salty

Excellent

By hdr206 |

Had the smothered steak for lunch today. Mac and cheese, black eyed peas and fries. Fabulous. Everything was delicious, but bring your appetite. Great service, very friendly staff. The men’s room was a clean as an OR. Highly recommend. Huge delicious lunch, tea and tax was about $15. Worth every penny.

Great Array for Sunday Brunch

By docwhiteaustin |

Three of us went for Sunday brunch. Arrived about 11:30 and were seated immediately. Incredible variety of food. Breakfast (eggs, omelettes, crispy bacon, sausage, waffles, etc.), mac & cheese, great garlic cheese grits (very creamy & tasty), fried chicken wings, creole succotash (okra, corn & tomatoes), baked catfish fillets topped with shrimp creole (delicious!), cold boiled shrimp & crab claws , London broil, chicken cordon bleu, oxtail stew, and other choices I cannot recall. Everything we tried was good, especially the catfish, succotash, grits, and wings. Pretty good service. Not cheap, but reasonable considering the variety and quality. Great live music combo as well.

Great food and music!

By Mike E |

Went here for Sunday brunch and was blown away! What a great establishment, awesome vibe as you walk in, the place was jumping off big time! Really kick butt trio playing, the crowd was into it and the food, oh my, the food! On Sunday they do an all you can eat buffet which had more items then I could think of. Great quality, awesome vibe and great atmosphere! What's not to love! Definitely a place we would go back to and highly recommend.

Just what I needed

By Bervin B |

In San Antonio at the state basketball tournament looking for a place to do lunch. This place has a bus outside the Alamodome that shuttled us to and fro. Once there, we opted for the Friday buffet, man, it was good. The greens were amazing as was the cornbread. I then washed it down with sweet tea that was elite. The cherry cobbler finished me. Another fine dining experience.

Family Reunion

By Veronica M |

My family n I went there for our meet n greet. That atmosphere, establishment, food n staff were awesome! Most of us did not have transportation. Mr. Tony, owner, offered to pick us at the hotel n bring us back! We truly enjoyed everything. We highly recommend Tony G’s Soulfood restaurant for any occasion. The live music was great also.

Soul is alive at Tony G's

By Cody |

From the second I walked in, I knew Tony G's was going to be wonderful. We ate the brunch buffet; never have I had such a well prepared combination of soul and comfort food! The grits were perfect, the chicken and waffles to die for, and the bacon was cooked crisp and delicious. Oh and to top it off, we enjoyed live music. What a great experience, well worth the cost and wait!

Not what we expected

By Felicia H |

The restaurant was nice and clean. There is no parking at the restaurant it was a block away. But they have a golf cart that can shuttle you to and from parking. But we found a spot around the corner. We stopped in around 3pm for a late lunch (they close at 4pm). Any Soul Food restaurant we've visited normally offers fried chicken wings (right)? Well they only offer on Friday (I think) but they checked to see if they had enough for us to order for a meal. Which they did. The customer service was very friendly and they even offered us beverages while we waited. The red Kool-Aid was sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet! As for the food the portion size is small (so don't expect left overs), the chicken wings are actually drummettes. The mac n cheese, collard greens and green beans were ok. We did fnd another soul food restaurant not too far from her call Mrs. Kitchen's check out my review for that location.

Got Soul, Want Great Chow, Fun, Music and to Leave Smiling

By Frank A |

My better half and I recently visited Tony G's Soul Food restaurant on a Sunday in search of Joe's Pork Chop Sandwich and breakfast. Well it was Sunday and the Sandwich was not available, but oh my Lord what a fantastic brunch. We focused on the non breakfast items, fried chicken (don't add salt before tasting), red beans and rice, pork ribs (Chef Mike's sauce is superb, but the ribs are good dry or with sauce), etc., etc. Each item was really good, the sound track is great (could use a little more Stax grit) and they had a deeply soulful, talented trio play live right after we finished eating. This dilemma was solved by ordering drinks and relaxing. Go , have fun, soak in the atmosphere and one outlandish staff and group of servers. Alas just breakfast and lunch. Closed on Monday.

Family Reunion Gathering

By Cloretta M |

A group stopped by for a late lunch, 2-4pm. Excellent tasting dishes, large servings, friendly service, clean establishment. Tina provided great service, very accommodating. Even the owner was available. Definitely will return and spread the word.

Not authentic soul food.

By Carrie M |

First off I have to commend our waitress, she was friendly and probably the best part of the visit. I was here a year ago and the food was reminiscent of old southern cooking. Today, the cornbread tasted like jiffy, the dressing must have been stove top and the baked beans were straight out of the can and the macaroni and cheese was just a little better than the boxed Kraft. I don’t know if they switched cooks or have just lost their desire to prepare a decent meal. Get your cook back from the old location and it should increase business and your reviews.

Celebrating Anniversary in San Antonio

By audreya43 |

We met a couple the night before who told us about Tony G's. We wanted "soul food"! We got there on Friday morning around 10:30 and I believe they were preparing both breakfast and lunch. It wasn't very busy yet...service was good...food was good! I had delicious grits, eggs, fried chicken wings, and the most delicious biscuit ever! No kidding! It was all really good and we left FULL and PLEASED! Thanks TonyG for being part of our 1 year anniversary celebration! It was great!

Best BLT, chicken, and cornbread!

By Mariah S |

Excellent fried chicken, wonderful cornbread muffins (my boyfriend was dejected when I ate one of his, so we ordered more), and a perfect fried green tomato BLT (thick, sweet, with the best lettuce parts and perfectly fried tomatoes on sourdough). The ladies at the table next to us snapped photos of their food, and then told us they eat here frequently. They said their waffles are as delicate as funnel cakes. I love this place! The most surprising thing here... two flavors of Kool Aid are on the menu. Our waitress suggested we return for Friday or Saturday buffet. Ok, we will!

Good for the soul!

By Jennifer S |

This was our first time trying soul food--and it did not disappoint. It is worth a visit for the corn bread muffins alone! Moist and sweet, we could have ordered a dozen more, and apparently that's what many people do. Enjoyed my friend catfish and mashed potatoes as well. Epitome of comfort food. Would go again the next time I'm in San Antonio. Oh! And the service was attentive, fun and charming!

No Customer service

By bacrowe |

7/5/2018 Referred and when we arrived to San Antonio we decided to visit the next day. So we drove the 30 minutes from our hotel. There was ample parking and once inside the place was not that busy about 6 or 7 tables of people. We asked if we could order take out and the gentleman said to go to the bar. My husband and I looked at the menu. We were ready to order. Staff members were working but no one ever acknowledged us to say "someone will be with you". The gentleman who told us to go to the bar came behind the bar 3 times and never said a word to us. My husband and I had a whole conversation and I even sent a text to my aunt who referred us. Still, nothing from the staff that kept passing by. We left and went back to the Hoppy Monk where we knew thay had great customer service.

New Location

By danidb518 |

Trip advisor has a different address than their website which is the correct one and we went to the TripAdvisor one first. Same side of town at least. They took an old place that looked liked a fast food old fried chicken and remodeled it. Nice decor with dyed concrete floors. We were there before lunch crowd, about 11:30. Thinking everything would be fresh and hot, hmmm. Ordered gumbo to share and try. It was ok, its not what we are use to. Had sausage and chicken in it. Not spicy. Not hot in temp. I had the fried chicken, it said three piece, waitress comes back and says only two since I ordered a thigh and breast. It was ok I wasn’t crazy about it. Not a lot of batter on it. The cabbage had too much butter cooked in it as did the sweet potatoes, all I could taste was butter. The stuffing was way over seasoned for me plus it had a couple pieces of smoked brisket in it. All seemed pre cooked. The cornbread muffin you could throw it was so hard and dried out. Husband had smothered steak, I think that’s what it was. He liked it, and he loved the mashed potatoes but didn’t care for the potato salad as it tasted like pre made from the grocery store. Green beans were ok, again, a lot of butter used in cooking here. We really liked the bacon sprinkled on the ice cream with slivers of strawberries, now this was good!! It took longer to arrive than the lunch plates!
