My office gets boxes and boxes of pizza from here all the time. Yeah... sometimes they don't get the timing exactly right, but everyone is certainly happy when they arrive! Great pizza and good combinations/flavors.

We live several blocks from Top Tomato. We are not big cooks so we have ordered food from the restaurant on numerous occasions. The menu offers great variety from a hummus platter to specialty pastas and salads. The food is always good with large portions. The staff accommodated a dietery request with no problem and the deliveries are always prompt.

I gave this place 2 stars instead of 1 b/c they allowed me twice to use a Living Social deal for takeout, which I really appreciated. However, they screwed up the orders both times - the first time wasn't a big deal; they just put some lettuce on a sandwich when I'd asked them not to, and there was a minor issue with another sandwich my cousin had ordered. The sandwiches were both chiekcn and were decent. However, on the second visit I ordered grilled salmon for my mom, which the menu stated came with zucchini, potatoes, and asparagus. I also ordered the chicken formaggi for me, and an apple walnut salad for both of us.. I actually ordered this in person, not by phone. When I got home with our food, I discovered that the container that was supposed to have salmon/veggies in it actually contained pasta with shrimp, scallops, & some miscellaneous veggies, but not a bit of salmon, asparagus, or potatoes. The place was about 4 1/2 blocks from my apartment, and I didn't feel like walking back, plus it was late and we were both hungry, so my mom decided to eat what was given to her. She didn't say much about her meal, so I can't attest to the quality of her meal, but my chicken was not very good - it was somewhat underdone and bland. The salad was pretty good, and they actually omitted the items I'd asked them to (olives & tomatoes). I'm still fuming even now about the screwup. I just can't believe they could give something so COMPLETELY different from what I'd ordered, especially when I was right there, live and in person, and they could have asked me any questions they wanted. It's a good thing my mom isn't allergic to shellfish. I'll probably continue to go mainly for the pizza, which is pretty good, although by no means my favorite in the city.

We wanted to grab a bite quickly before a concert and this place was perfect! Close to our hotel, decent menu selection, good-sized portions, and very reasonably priced! We got a personal pizza (which was bigger than most personal pizzas we've seen elsewhere!) and a mixed cheese sandwich (delicious roll!).

My first encounter with this place was leftover slices of plain pizza reheated in a microwave. It was actually pretty good, considering. The next time was take out for cheesesteaks. On the advice of a local, it would be hard to find a bad cheesesteak in Philly. Maybe they were right, it wasn't bad. It just didn't taste any more special than one from back home in NEPA. Maybe I should have walked over to the Reading Terminal Market. It looked like that may have been a more authentic Philly Cheesesteak experience.

They had a very nice variety of types and size of pizzas including slice and personal size. Great assorment of beers and other alcoholic and nonalcoholic bottled beverages. The dinner special was the grilled salmon - excellent! Very low-key, casual sit-down or carry out - a great place to chat with friends. Service was great!

This restaurant is clean with a helpful and friendly staff. It has a large seating area with a selection of booth or tables. Drink choices included a selection of spirits plus both fountain or bottled drinks. My slice of pizza was huge with tons of yummy toppings. The menu has a variety of sandwiches, wraps, salads, and pizzas. If you in downtown Philly, take the time to eat here.

The staff at Top Tomato are very courteous and friendly. Our family considers ourselves pizza connoisseurs. While this pizza is good and tasty, it's not the best we've had. The sauce was very heavy. The options were plentiful.

Hungry from a small shopping trip with my son, we decided to try "Top Tomato." We ordered onion rings and two small personal pizzas. My son loves pizza. He usually eats just plain pizza...just tomato sauce and cheese. I had the pizza with banana peppers and pepperoni. Both were really good. A great place to have lunch or dinner after shopping, or when your just hungry...the personal pizza is more than generous in size. The service was great and we both agreed we would go back.

Disclaimer: I haven't tried any of the dinner items, only the pizza and sandwiches. I work at Jefferson and I've tried all the pizza places in the area, but I keep coming back to Top Tomato. They have the best slices around - plain as well as many specialty pies available daily at lunchtime. The mediterranean is great, big chunks of san marzano tomato, spinach, and feta/mozzarella blend, the jersey tomato with san marzano chunks and garlic, and my favorite, the Top Tomato which is an "upside down" pizza that has cheese on the bottom, sauce on the top. The sauce is really tasty and the crust is delicious. The service is very friendly and I've been there so often they more or less know my typical order. I've often brought sandwiches home for dinner or to a concert to have before the show, the rolls are fabulous and not your typical hoagie roll. All in all, Top Tomato serves great food - love them!

We ordered a 16" pizza that was delicious. The sauce wasn't spicy. The french fries were crispy. The waitress was very friendly, she took the time to talk with us about where we were from. The ladies restroom was the cleanest I have ever seen at a restaurant I highly recommend Top Tomato. We used a coupon from Groupon.

Went to the Walnut Street Theater for a Saturday Night performance and was looking for a place to get a bite to eat. Checked out the Walnut Street Theater's website for a place and came across this restaurant which is right down the street so we thought we would check it out. And boy are we glad we did. Me and my son shared a Chicken Caesar Wrap which was thick as any we ever had.(Tasted great as well) We also bought a pizza for the table which ranked up their with one of the best pizzas we ever had. The icing on the cake was the cost for 4 of us was under $30 with beverages which was a nice surprise for a Center City eatery. Needless to say, we will definitely go back.

Top Tomato is a little diner located along busy Walnut Street. They offer a variety of sandwiches and Italian foods. The diner is not much to look at but provides quality food. Service 4/5: The waitress was attentive to our group and was attentive while ordering and checking in on the taste of the food. The only thing she did not do was offer refills on our soft drinks. Food 5/5: The food was served hot and fresh. The Philly Cheese Steak was tasty and savory. Portion sizes of sandwiches and the fresh fries were large. I would make sure to visit while you have an appetite. Prices were a little expensive but portion sizes helped make up for it. Cleanliness 4/5: The restaurant was fairly clean. It looked a little outdated. Bottom Line: I recommend Top Tomato and would strongly consider eating here if I make it back to Philadelphia again in the future.

A recent dinner at Top Tomato in Center City Philadelphia was a great experience for myself and 2 friends. The friendly waiter recommended a pizza to share. The large vegetarian pie was very tasty and large enough that I managed to take a couple pieces home. We also split the antipasto appetizer which was very good. Overall the atmosphere is casual and friendly with a varied menu from burgers to pasta dishes. There is definitely something to please everyone in your group at this restaurant.

In a city where pizza is a religion, Top Tomato is a true contender. I've always had them delivered, and they always arrive within the promised window, hot and perfectly prepared. They're not cheap: a large (16"/8 large slices) with 3 toppings runs > $20, but they're absolutely worth it -- especially since one of these can feed me for 4 days, and they re-heat exceptionally well under the broiler. Pizza is one of those foods that can range from atmospheric to nauseating, depending on the care taken in their preparation, and the quality of ingredients. Top Tomato's pies are always first-rate. Out-of-town friends from cities without a true pizza tradition always rave when they sample TT's offerings, and even my New York friends admit that TT is as good as anything back home.

I visited this place on eve of May-20th, and i was ushered to the bar on the first floor. I was served beer in a plastic based single use disposable tumbler while two senior citizen, who happened to be acquaintance of the bar tender were served in a glass. It's not the fact they were outta glasses bc of the ongoing party upstairs. This was discriminatory behavior and i failed to understand why this was the case. Also we already have this climate crisis and pollution problem then why single use plastic has become choice? Given every alcoholic beverage being acidic in nature, how it can be served in a plastic container?? Then there were flies.. ambassadors of everything that's garbage, were wandering over the food and instead of reading my book, i had to focus on keeping the flies off from the food. The staff couldn't care less. The bar tender was busy chatting anways. So if you're an ignorant who doesn't give care about environment and seek discriminatory treatment bc you have low self esteem and love unhygienic food. This is your go to place.

Pizza, calzone, fat steak sandwiches ,traditional menu . The pizza is innovative and outstanding . Waiter staff is diligent, courteous and pleasant. Beer is available also. Small shop ,leisure atmosphere , convenient location to theaters, hospital, take out available. Manga !!!

I had lunch here recently. Have seen it but never stopped in. Great variety in menu. Polite workers, salad was large and more than enough. Definitely would recommend and return.

Stopped in for dinner since it was on way to hotel. I had the cheesesteak, which he said was the best. As a Philly native, I disagree. It was alright, but definitely NOT the best in town. The cheesecake was ok. Perhaps should have tried the pizza.

The pizza called "The Works" was good as was the Greek salad. Enjoyed both and have since ordered both again.

Was here tonight and I've yet to find a pizza in Philly that honestly WOWs me. The crust here was good, the sauce-very tomato based (which isn't bad). Id recommend higher quality toppings...the pepperoni was ok, as was the ham...try a Boars Head or Thruman's...they should be available, and people like me would pay a little more for the quality. I will say, the speed and service were friendly and excellent...I even saw the owner thanking folks for coming in. This place does prove that a 'good' oven pizza meets or exceeds a coal fired pizza. Would recommend, but probably not make a special trip.

WOW! this place has amazing gluten free pizza! the crust is very obviously fresh and it bakes up nice and crisp. the cheese and other toppings are noticeably more fresh and of much higher quality than most other pizza restaurants. the staff is REALLY nice, they are genuinely pleased to have you as a customer... so refreshing :)

They offered some creative and tasty pizzas. The staff was friendly. Table service was a bit slow but the food was hot when it came out.

En route to a college basketball game in Philadelphia, we walked passed a trendy looking restaurant offering coal-fired pizza, and decided to make a post game visit. Post game, that restaurant proved to be too trendy - there was a huge mob waiting to be seated. Not the types that endure mobs waiting to be seated, we walked on. A couple of hours of thinking of pizza turned us off to other options, and we walked a bit before we stumbled on Top Tomato. The decor was probably quite the last time it was updated, which was probably a generation ago, but it was clean and there were empty tables, and we were too hungry to be too picky. The lone waiter had an "I'm-really-not-a-waiter" air about him, but he was friendly, polite, and did all that he was supposed to do. We ordered from an extensive menu of 'artisan' pizzas. I settled on Italian Market pizza - pesto, spinach, tomatoes, olives, etc. I heard violins, the pizza was so good. The ingredients were very fresh and perfectly seasoned. My next visit to Top Tomato will be quite intentional.

As a corporate event planning company, we order tens of thousands of dollars of food every year. We recently ordered over $300 from Top Tomato for my boyfriends surprise party with no problems, but when we decided to try it for ourselves...wow, what an unpleasant ordeal. To make a long unpleasant story short...we never did get our order (GrubHub was great, and refunded our money), but the people at Top Tomato were rude, and really unpleasant to deal with. The fact that the order was over an hour and a half late on a TUESDAY night was remarkable...and they were unresponsive and eventually refused to deliver, because it got too late. Not only will we never order from them again, but will tell all of our business associates and friends of this experience. Since Philly Food Tours also stops at Top Tomato, we will make sure they also know of the crass, unprofessional people we had to deal with. It only takes one foul mouthed order taker to cost a company thousands.

We stopped by to try the Philly’s popular meal, the cheesesteak. Saw the menu in the window and the price seemed reasonable, so we went in. Big mistake. A guy that seemed to be the manager came with bad attitude since the beginning. Not welcoming at all, cold and clearly annoyed by us. We ordered two cheesesteaks and soda, and asked if one of the cheesesteaks could be with no onion, to what the guy answered rudely that they don’t come with onions. We said it’s fine, to what he answered “so one with onions and one with no onions” and left in a hurry... okey then... so they come with onions or not? Anyway, he came back with indeed one with onions and one without. The food was... okey, not horrible but nothing too good either, just bread, meat and some white thing, probably cream cheese. Anybody can make something better at home, more tasty, with more stuff inside, better bread. Anyhow, when we asked for the check, he just threw the ticket on the table and left. I went to the cashier to pay, and after giving him the money, casually asked why the price was 8 something instead of 6 for the cheesesteak, as we thought we saw in the menu on the window... Oh lord... all hell broke loose.. The guy got himself all upset and aggressive, screaming where we saw that price and rushing us to the menu in the window. When we got there he just barked, “SEE?? EIGHT!!” and rushed back inside. We stood there amused by what just happened, also trying to find the cheesesteak price again (it’s a big menu with tiny letters). He was right, we got confused over the cheeseburger price, which was 6. After coming inside, I said sorry, that was just a question over a honest mistake, that there was no need to be rude. He was still histerical and over reacting. It’s also important to point we were not arguing over the price, we had already paid when we asked. One more thing, they also charged us the onion (I know right?!), which we didn’t even mention to him. We left with a bad experience for no good reason, after an unpleasant and generic food.

During our stay in Philadelphia we were looking for pizza one night. We were very fortunate to find this restaurant a short walk from our hotel. We ordered a large half cheese half mushroom pizza and a garden salad for takeout. When we got the food back to the room we found that it was delicious. It had a good amount of cheese and mushrooms and the cheese, sauce, and the crust were all very tasty. We were also pleased with the salad in terms of the size and the contents. If we find ourselves back in Philadelphia we would probably go back to this restaurant again and recommend that others give it a try!

I love italian food and when i see a promising resturant i have to eat there. This one did not disappoint me. They know their pizza and pasta. The eggplant pizza is somthing that you don't see too often, it was realy good and if you like eggplant you should give it a try. All the pasta is made fresh at the place so i took a ravioly filled with mushrooms and i loved it. My wife took the salmon and snd it was done exactly the way we like it. And so were the antipasty vegetables. The service was excellent and we definitely had a great time...

When I think of a pizza shop, I think of a place that serves slices and soda and doesn’t care about the quality of the product as it is a take it or leave it kind of place. WELL This place is a whole level above that and more. A pizza shop or should I say kitchen like this is more of a gourmet place when it comes to the flavors that the food offered from the Margherita pizza that was so good, we took one home with us. They gave us garlic knots with our food that tasted better then I have had before. It must be the dough. The FREE refills on soft drinks was a total plus for the kids. As for the adults we wish we could get that on the beer...LOL. BTW 20 different kinds of beer. WOW I had a Cheesesteak and was blown away. Never before have I had a good cheesesteak on a handmade roll before that was this good. And only $8.00 with fries. One of us a grilled chicken sandwich that looked so good that the next time we come back, I am getting that too. Service was AWESOME!!! The prices were GREAT. BUT the food was the best. Kids can be picky and if they love it you know others will too. A real gem in Philly. Across from the Forrest theater on Walnut Street Jerry Ehrlich from the great City of Philadelphia

A stroll through Center City led us to come across this eatery. We ordered a Philly Cheesesteak Hoagie and Sausage and Peppers Parmigiano sandwich. Solid goodness and a huge portion. Did not leave hungry or disappointed.

Stopped for dinner. Had two calzones but could have just ordered one for two of us. Also a burger that was very well done. Next time we're in that area we'd eat there again.

Wow. I think I’ve only had a couple experiences on par with what I experienced at Top Tomato. I am very disappointed with our visit today. Service was absolutely non existent. Really shouldn’t have tipped it was that bad. Our waitress was always nowhere to be found and even when she was around she ignored us when we tried to flag her down. We asked the food runner what the deal was for soda refills and he said either ask your server or go to the bar to get it refilled. We should not have to go up to the bar ourselves as customers paying to be served. We ended up having to need to as when she came around again she left before we could tell her. Then we waited 5 min at least at the bar for someone to fill our cups. Unacceptable. My burger was burnt but I never had a chance to tell her so I just ate it as she was never around to ask for a new one and we were starving when we came in. My friend had to ask 3 separate times for blue cheese and after an hour he got one. But they charged us for 3 cups which we didn’t see until the itemized receipt was sent to us after we paid. This experience was unbelievable and I will not be back for a meal.

Pizza is my go-to food, and I've had it all around the world. This is my first trip to Philly and I've been exploring some different pizza restaurants and the Top Tomato definitely is a place to stop by if you want good straight up pizza with a smile at a reasonable price. I will definitely be returning!

tv had the eagles game on, which almost ruined the meal. Great salad with good house dressing, took home more tyhr\en half. Pasta fagoli soup, one of the best, I have ever eaten. Good value for the money

The pizza at Top Tomato was really good, and the leftovers re-heated to a high quality. Service wasn't bad - just a little curt (or short, if you will). Not much attention. Perhaps they were really busy with take-out orders or something. They also close a little on the early side (9pm on a Saturday ).

I work around the corner from this place, and we routinely order their salads as they are popular. My standard is the portabella Sicilian (with honey mustard) and I have never been disappointed. The Sicilian with chicken is the other popular one in our group. One review mentioned "screw-ups" in the order, but I have never had any issues in about 20 visits over the last few years

The bread made the sandwich....hands down. It was great as well because the meat was tasty. I met the owner Sam and he was a nice guy and a true EAGLES fan. FREE refills on soda and NO TAX either on refills.... LOL The place was easy to find across from the Forrest Theater on Walnut Street. The owner also suggested we get the margherita pizza and he was right, it was really good.

The pizza and wings were really good. The pizza crust was very thin which I prefer. Delivered fast and hot!

Excellent food & service, staff was friendly. And was fairly fast considering how much we ordered & everything made fresh.

Visited Philly recently and stopped in to have lunch. We enjoyed their Veggie burger so much, we returned the next day to have it again. Great service and food. Thank you.

My daughters and i split a large calzone and had almost half to take home! It was very tasty! The boys split a Philly cheesesteak pizza and enjoyed it. The restaurant looked like a self serve, but we had a waitress which would have been fine, but it would have been nice to be able to get our own refills instead of waiting on her.

Just had lunch after a tough time choosing from the giant list of meal selections. The chicken panino sandwich was very good, and my son's "the Bomb" cheesesteak was excellent. This place has many pizza choices including jambalaya, and several steaks, grinders, and sandwiches. The service was quick, food hot and tasty, and prices very fair. The location is convenient to Jefferson and the Walnut Street Theater. The restaurant and rest room were very clean. Top Tomato was a great choice for lunch.

So after reading all the other reviews it sounds as though we should have just ordered pizza when we walked in for dinner before our show at forrest theater across the street. I've never seen Italian wedding soup with carrots, corn, celery, egg, chicken, and browned chunks of ground beef, though it did have spinach it was missing orzo and the little meatballs. The waitress claimed it was their version.... I'm not even going to get into the toasted stale bread served with oil. I don't remember the names of our main pasta dishes but suffice to say I've had better from pizza hut so it's definitely not nearly up to center city standards but I will admit the prices were quite reasonable though I wouldn't go back unless it was my only choice and we would definitely stick to their pizza based on the other reviews I've read

YO!!!! Here in Philly, Cheesesteaks Ain’t Just Food—They’re a Way of Life. WE GOT RULES. Follow 'em, and no one gets hurt... LOL. Let’s keep it 100 % REAL ....Philly’s packed with legendary cheesesteak joints. Everyone’s got their fav. And the war over who's got THE BEST? Wit or witout onions? That’s just everyday talk around here. But when it comes down to it, one thing matters: LOCATION. 💥 TOP TOMATO 💥 Center City’s ONLY cheesesteak spot holding it down— Right across from Jefferson Hospital. You in the heart of the city? This is the move. Try Top Tomato Bar & Pizza. PHILLY CHEESESTEAK 101: (According to Me—Born & Raised in This Great City) 🔺 THE BREAD – Fresh. Crusty outside, soft inside. No floppy rolls. 🔺 THE MEAT – Thin-sliced ribeye or get outta here. 🔺 THE CHEESE – Cooper Sharp reigns supreme when melted right. 🔺 THE ONIONS – "Wit" adds that soul. Trust. 🔺 THE COOKING – NO WATER. Ever. 🔺 THE LOCATION – Repeat it with me... LOCATION MATTERS. And if you haven’t been to Top Tomato yet… seriously, WHY NOT? They broke the March Madness bracket—it was busted wide open without them holding a rightful spot or even mentioned. Let’s be real: They should’ve been sitting comfy at #3 in Philly, no question. BOTTOM LINE? Top Tomato was the ONLY Center City cheesesteak spot left out. That’s criminal. It’s a Center City sleeper hit—holding its own without the hype. Folks visiting Jefferson Hospital? They flock to Top Tomato—and they leave full, happy, and converted. LOCATION ORDER 🏆 MY CHEESESTEAK POWER RANKINGS (No Order. It’s All About Where You Are): 🥖 Angelo’s – South Philly. If you know, you know. 🥖 Cafe Carmela’s – Northeast’s finest. My personal Top 3. 🥖 Top Tomato – Center City. Sneaky consistent. Never misses. 🥖 Tony Luke’s – Stadium area. Touristy? Yeah. Still a banger. 🥖 John’s Roast Pork – When it’s open, you go. Period. 🥖 Max’s – North Philly. Massive steaks. Serious flavor. 🥖 Chubby’s – Roxborough OG. Great for late-night cravings. Bonus Pick – Donkey’s Place (Camden, NJ) Yeah, it's Jersey. But that poppy seed Kaiser roll? That thick-cut steak? It’s in the convo, like it or not. Final Word: Every corner of this city has a cheesesteak hero. That’s what makes Philly the undisputed Cheesesteak Capital of the World. – Jerry Ehrlich From the GREAT City of Philadelphia Updated from 2018 visit

The pizza was ok the service was very good!. Just didnt have very good air conditioning and no beer? They seem to be improving but still need some work. The crust and cheese was very good the sauce needs some help. Not bad for the price though.

I love this place that simple. Nothing fancy but one of the best steaks in Philly. The french fries are great also. No real table service to take your order but they bring you out your food. it is a good casual dinner. We went at lunch and got a lunch special Cheese Steak and French Fries and soft drink $6.99!! It was a full-size steak and full-size order of fries. Every time I go I want to try a meal but always get the steak sandwich and when I am done I literally get sad. Again nothing fancy just great food.

While walking and exploring Philly, we walked by Top Tomato and saw they had cheese steak subs. We had to try and weren't disappointed.

We had lunch there and the food was out of this world. I had a sub which was super good and my husband had 2 slices of different kinds of pizza. He said the pizza was very good also.

We went to dinner here after passing it on our way back from the Liberty Bell to our hotel. It is a tiny restaurant that can be overlooked by the average passer-by, but the food was incredible! They have a great selection of personalized "gourmet" fresh pizzas with various topping combinations. The prices were very reasonable as well ($6 to $11) per personal pizza, depending on the toppings. They were also very accommodating with substitution requests. I highly recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some great "gourmet" pizza in Philly. Oh, and the bathroom was spotlessly clean as well.

We had two lunches here on labour day weekend. The waitress was one of the best we have had in our 5 week vacation. We had a Reuben and a Philly cheesesteak and wine for $4 a glass and in a town where most glasses cost $12 it was great. They r very busy with take out due to the proximity of the Jefferson hospital and university. If you r visiting from overseas just remember that hospital staff wear their scrubs out on the street! In a country obsessed with hygiene we thought this bizarre . Thanks for a great time!

This place has a decent amount of food choice to chose from. Sandwiches and meals and pizza. The meat on the steak sandwich was great. The roll is soft and I prefer a harder roll but my wife loved it. The fries seem to be cut and cook freshly, and you get good serving of them.

Pizza was just about ok but the service was really indifferent. I will not be returning to try this again

Top Tomato makes some pretty good pizza, some being a little weird, though they taste great. For example, their lasagna pizza is outstanding, as is their pizza with baked ziti on it. It's hard to go in here and choose a normal pizza (plain, pepperoni, etc.) when they have all of these other terrific creations.

Never heard of “Tomatoe Pie” in Canada but visiting Philly we were told we had to try it, and so glad we did, fantastic taste, well made square pizza with tasty rustic tomatoe sauce on top, add hot pepper flakes and oregano and enjoy! Highly recommend when going to Philly! 🍒 4/5
Red Top was our choice
We ate at Top Tomato for a local pizza feel while we were in Philly on vacation. The place is in the Washington Square district just a few blocks from our hotel. We found it quite eclectic and charming on the inside with great music playing in the background. We ordered the Red Top pizza which had the sauce on the top. We were very happy we did. The pizza's come in 16 " or personal size (10"). We got the 16" and had only 2 pieces left when we were finished. The sausage, bacon, and onion on ours was delicious. We would gladly return to Top Tomato and you should give it a try if you are looking for something fun in Philly.
