New place at the Fairmont

By #the_vacationist |

Gotta say, the new restaurant in the Fairmont is solid. We’ve had breakfast, a few lunches & dinner, and while not expansive, the menu is well done. The vibe for each meal is truly different, as it should be, yet professionally done well. Appealing to different crowds for each meal, the place really comes alive at night. The staff, from hostess to bar staff, all service staff, is excited, energetic & wishing to make your visit anything but your last. Stopped in multiple evenings after dinner elsewhere in a premier city for dinning, and it still fun. Go. Eat. Enjoy!

Not the typical hotel restaurant

I had misgivings about Toro because it’s a hotel restaurant, and I typically find these to be overpriced with poor service and mediocre food. But Toro, a Peruvian restaurant, immediately struck me with its stylish, vaguely jungle on fire decor. The drink menu is heavy on the hard liquor. The cocktails are more fruity, but the old fashioned-style “Inca Goddess” was a hit; a bit smoother than a traditional old fashioned. I chose the short rib, tender and flavorful on top of well-seasoned fried rice. Presentation of these and other items in “Inca-style” pottery worked well. The churros I got for dessert were tasty, but pretty basic with chocolate and caramel dipping sauce. This restaurant was quite pricey, though I was here on business and thus not as price-sensitive. The service was friendly if not that fast, though I was in no hurry. It was quite good food with portions sizes that didn’t leave me too full. On an expense account or as a client, it’s a great choice. If you’re looking for a faster meal or more value, it’s probably not the best option.

Delicious Latin food and excellent service.

Excellent food, ambience and service. It is Latin-American food, mainly Peruvian and Venezuelan. We had the cachapas and grilled Provoleta for starters and the Branzino for our entree. Everything was so delicious! Our waitstaff was attentive without being intrusive. The cocktails were wonderful. We will definitely return!

We sat at the bar and Danny was AMAZING- he suggested empanadas and the fish of the day! The food was delicious and the service was fantastic. Coming back for brunch tomorrow! 10 out of 10 from me😊

Absolutely delighted with my dinner at Toro - I felt I was stepping in to a totally different place than the frozen city of Chicago. Food is spectacular, service on point, atmosphere works very well. With friends or with your partner, Toro is definitely the place to be :)

Great food...service was not great.

Great atmosphere and The food was very good. We had a group of 8 and were celebrating our daughter's graduation. The waiter was not attentive and we waited an hour for our first cocktail and two hours for the entree. Thank goodness for the GM as he stepped in at times to "right the ship".

Amazing service and fabulous food!

Amazing! Our server Burak was outstanding. We had our two young sons with us (10&6) and he was wonderful with them. Also very knowledgeable and kind. The food was absolutely fabulous, we had the tomahawk to share and words can’t describe how good it was! Also the bombe desert was brilliant and so exciting for the kids. But still the star of the evening was Burak! Thank you!

Came for Happy Hour, but it was their dinner menu item that Wowed us.

Visiting Chicago for 2 months, my husband and I are exploring different happy hour finds throughout the city. This is so far our top 1 or 2 happy hour find. The ambiance is more upscale, but not stuffy. The service was fantastic. Our server was always there when I needed something, and provided good recommendations. Toro had a margarita and taco happy hour special that we wanted to try. We had the margarita flight, and all 3 versions of the taco (beef, pork, and chicken). The margarita flights and the tacos were small but delicious. The prices were $5 per taco, and the margaritas were $20 for the flight or $8 for regular size. Tip - Just buy the regular size margaritas since it is a better value. Though we ordered about 9 tacos, we still wanted to try a regular menu item since everything was delicious. On the regular menu we ordered the Zarandeado (fish of the day was Branzino). It was the best branzino I have ever eaten anywhere. I love seafood dishes and Branzino is one of my favorites. I order it whenever it’s on the menu. It was properly cooked and seasoned well. I will definitely come back before we leave Chicago, and bring friends.

Fusion food

A restaurant on the first floor of the Fairmont Hotel, with Mexican-Peruvian fusion food. Excellent service and well presented dishes. Small menu but multiple entries can be shared. A little expensive

A Treat for the Senses - Delicious Food and Great Service

By Mary Jo K |

We had a delicious dinner at Toro tonight. I was excited to see a new restaurant at the Fairmont as I was not a huge fan of the tavern food they had previously. The food and service were outstanding. You can get by with a moderate price but to me this is a splurge restaurant. For appetizers we had the octopus, the ceviche Amarillo with shrimp, grouper ají Amarillo, leche de tigre, mango, cucumber and red onion and the squash soup. All were incredibly tasty and very unique. For dinner we had the rack of lamb (best lamb I have ever eaten) and the cauliflower steak with sides of heirloom carrots and asparagus (skip the potatoes 3 ways meh). My husband and I eat out quite a bit and love eating unique food - toro delivers. When we arrived the music was a little annoying (electronica) it mellowed into acoustic Spanish guitar after awhile. For dessert we had the Bomba - a great blend of ice cream, with a chocolate shell, fruit sauces and berries. This restaurant is a winner. Decor is cute but runs a little dark (tough for photos) Give it a try - nice to find a restaurant that is not the same old fish, chicken, steak and pork menu.

Located just a short distance from our conference venue, this establishment offers a pleasant atmosphere, delicious cuisine, and reasonable prices. I particularly appreciated the stylish decor and overall experience during brunch.
