Good Food Served as It's Done

By hfulghum |

This is not fine Russian-style table service. As food is ready, it comes to the table, regardless of the order you'd expect it. So don't be surprised if an appetizer shows up between the main course and dessert. The food is good, the service passable, and the place is very lively. Great selection of sake and very fine sushi.

Always a special treat!

We have been enjoying dinner at Toyoda Sushi for 26 years, ever since we had to apologize for all the rice our 2-year-old had scattered on the floor. Over the years, the quality and service of this welcoming and cozy restaurant have been exceptional. The staff have become friends with us, as they have with many of their regulars. We don't mind paying cash or using a payment app because we understand that the fees banks charge for credit card services are a burden to small businesses and the cost is often passed on to the customer. It's best if we all work to keep costs down so that everyone can enjoy this great place.

What's not to like? Sushi, service and fun!

Toyoda has delicious sushi in generous portions, served a friendly atmosphere. Always welcoming and entertaining the staff and other patrons are the best.

Great sushi on Lake City Way

Good sushi and really nice atmosphere! Not necessarily any cheaper than other sushi places but the quality is good and it is always bustling with people. Will be back.

The Caterpillar

Packed with customers, wait staff literally running, everything yummy. Caterpillar is a masterpiece also the Spider Roll. If I lived in Seattle, this would be a regular.

Excellent traditional Japanese Food with Friendly atmosphere

By darcymn |

Love to eat at Toyoda's. Walking into the restaurant takes you right to the traditional Japanese restaurant. The food is wonderful and I loved sitting at the sushi bar and watching the master. I highly recommend visiting for a meal.

One of my favorites

By Ty H |

The area this restaurant is in, is not a busy area or a center district. Therefore it is quite hard to find a good place to eat. This restaurant is one of the few very good ones in the area. Decent food, decent service, nothing amazing but if you live in this area you will understand what I'm trying to say here. This place is very nostalgic to me too so maybe there is a bit bias :P

A memorable experience of Seattle friendliness and hospitality

By Mangoscent |

We went to this restaurant because a friend recommended it. The sushi and sashimi are excellent: very fresh, good portion and not expensive at all. The staff is friendly and efficient. The lady owner actually struck a conversation with us, and made us feel very welcome when she found out we were from out of town. She even gave my 2 teenage kids Toyoda T shirts!! Thank you!!

Terrible table service, OK sushi bar, overall falling apart

By SounderFan |

Been coming here for years, but have to say the place seems to be drifting down. The sushi chefs make some very nice sushi, and they do a good job attending to bar diners. But God help you if you want or are forced to sit at a table. The wait staff is totally disorganized, there is no such thing as having a waitress, just several staff running around and you get to try to get one of their attention to get service. We just had a few items tonight and it took an hour and 30 minutes to get in and out. An obvious problem is they support takeout ordering, and it's clear their chefs and wait staff get totally sidetracked responding to the high volume of takeout orders. The owner is a really nice guy, very good sushi chef, but the service and overall operation is totally run amok. We won't be going back so much, after being regulars for years. They need to make some changes and act like a real restaurant. Time for some other sushi bars to move up the list in north Seattle.

Classic Excellent Super Fresh Sushi

By PithyPacky |

Really only the local Seattlites mostly know about this place. And they would probably kill me if they knew what a great review I am going to write - because then this place will be even busier than it already can be. Well hidden in N. Seattle on a main arterial street heading to the Lake Forest Park/Kenwood area, sits the unobtrusive Toyoda. Warm wood interior, classic L-shaped sushi bar, REAL sushi chefs, classic Japanese menu items, and just fabulous fresh sushi. Small, cozy, and always bustling, this place just has great food. So kill me Seattle.

Overpriced and underwhelming

By Karen12541 |

We used to love this place. Now it is way overpriced and the food was mediocre at best. Our deep fried spider crab was burned to a dry black crisp. Small bottles of beer cost $9.95. Service was impatient and curt. Don’t waste your money.

Best sashimi in Seattle

By Mia C |

I've been going to Toyoda Sushi for about 20 years, for good reason. Hands down, they have the best sushi and sashimi in Seattle. And I'm picky; I'm from Japan. Their restaurant is tiny, and there is often a line to be seated, but it's definitely worth the wait.

Great Sashimi

By Andrea C |

Another neighborhood eatery that has been around a long time. The owner and Sushi chef always has a smile and the food never disappoints. This is straight forward good quality eating.

Overrated

By rkuef |

Get to Toyoda sushi a half hour before opening. You probably won't be the first in line, but you'll be able to get a seat. This restaurant is a tiny hole in the wall in an out of the way neighborhood. And it is insanely popular for no good reason. Toyoda sushi is good, just not good enough to justify the hype. One experience common to anyone who has eaten at Toyoda is that you will inevitably be served something that hasn't fully thawed. If you can't get there early enough to stand in line for opening, just don't go. The long wait will probably end up in a less desirable table or corner of the counter. There ARE better sushi restaurants in the Seattle area for the same money.

Great sushi but small and slow, needs more ventilation

By Travel2Food |

Fresh sushi, great cooked dishes, but the Sukiyaki is extra sweet. Try it if you have wait time and not tempted to eat and dash :) We stopped by only when we can make it first open.

Go early

By el_duderino326 |

Toyoda serves really good sushi. Be sure to go early as the wait for a table can be quite long. I saw a review about better service at the bar, so we waited for the bar and were quite happy with our meal.

Always the Freshest

Generous portions, excellent selection of sushi, sashimi as well as hot dishes. If raw fish isn't your thing try the broiled black cod!

The Best Sashimi Dinner You can buy on a budget

By Srikanth M |

Toyoda is a small Mom & Pop joint run by a small Japanese family, The Dad makes the sushi and sashimi and the wife and daughters serve the guest. This place will rank the highest for full value for money. We ordered one sashimi dinner between two of us and were served a platter of 4 to 6 pieces of each of these Fatty Tuna, Salmon, Prawns, Scallops, Cod, Skipjack and my favorite Unagi (Eel). The serving were generous enough for two people over that the Chef kept giving us complementary food. We enjoyed a memorable Dinner. Natchan san the chef may not be that great with his knifes but he is very generous. Highly Recommend it.

Probably the most reasonable price with the best quality around

By drjil |

It's tough to find really good sushi in the greater metro area. We have tried a number of the local sushi places which the locals say are their favorites, and Toyoda has by far stayed at the top of our list. One of the most outstanding dishes is the spicy tuna bowl, it is a meal in itself. The black cod is also very good and consistent. There are many sushi places in the area, but was always end up saying, "not as good as Toyoda". With the family in tow, it would be nice if they did lunches, alas, can't have everything. If you get there around 5pm when they first open, the service is very good, but as the place fills up, it does tend to slow down.

We love this place!!

By LoveCreatureComfort |

We have been going to Toyoda Sushi for years and the quality has been excellent the entire time. You need to go early if you don't want to stand in line. The menu is fairly extensive, the service is prompt and polite. We love the owners and staff at this restaurant. It is such a treat to go there!!

Surprise! Reasonable not chi chi Japanese food.

By Miriahm D |

Going into this restaurant was like time traveling back to when I first moved to the Big Island in 1969, and developed my taste for Japanese food in cool funky Japanese restaurants. These in turn were like mom and pop neighborhood restaurants in Japan, where I later lived for a few years. Not fancy, just very good food at a reasonable price. Their menu is large, but once you read sushi and tempura, what else do you need to know. Sushi is fresh, and tempura is cooked in fresh very hot oil and is delicious. And they have plenty of other good things to eat. It also seems like a family run place as well.

Best tataki! Prices are somewhat on the higher side, but great selection of traditional dishes; Natchan, the owner, is so friendly and a real character!

Although it has gotten a bit more expensive since I moved here, this place is a hidden gem. Friendly staff and always excellent food.

By vamsally |

The food was pretty good once we got it. It is not the "super fresh" I'd consider excellent, but decent. it is just it took so long to get our food, it is hard for me to judge this restaurant just on its food. They forgot one of our orders (not to mention other foods arriving late) and it took us forever to get anything at all. Perhaps avoid busy dinner time?

Outstanding family run sushi!

My husband and I visited Toyoda Sushi on a suggestion and ordered the sashimi dinner. It was both beautifully presented and melt in your mouth. I've never had sushi this good! I highly recommend sitting at the bar to enjoy watching the talented and humorous chefs.

Great Authentic Japanese Food in a Mom & Pop Atmosphere!

By PortlandRover |

Small but attractive restaurant with superior food and customer service. You are treated as special the moment you walk through the door until the time you go back out. As you enter you can look for the picture of Paul Newman on the wall taken when he once ate here. The food is very good and the menu has plenty of variety. I don't eat much sushi myself, but I'm told the chef/owner, originally from Japan, absolutely obsesses over providing top-quality sushi. People seem to love it! There are plenty of non-sushi options to choose from, in case you also are also not a fan. There is sually ample street parking nearby. This is a nice spot for authentic Japanese food in a warm, friendly atmosphere.

Great food and service

By Borneo111 |

Bit on the pricier side - should have realized that the restaurant does not cater to average diners when I notice the absence of "Bento" box specials on the menu. Went on a Sunday night for dinner - place was packed and we were in a rush - but happy to get our orders in timely fashion. Dinner for three ( no drinks) costed over $130 (tips included). Service great - despite the observed short staffed ness. Would definite revisit for special occasions.

Watch your Check!

By 122slk |

This restaurant has been a favorite of mine for many years. However, they have been incorrectly calculating our tab for the last year - inflating $5 to $10 each visit. On my August 4 visit, I asked for an itemized tab and suddenly the check was returned and totaled $66 versus the original $71. It takes the joy out of dinning if you need to take out your calculator. The food is excellent and fresh. The "free" soup and salad served when you sit down starts the meal off on a good note.

Tantalizing selection of fish

By Albert C |

We arrived early to a nearly enpty restaurant, only the sushi bar was filled. Ordered the first menu item, a wide selection fish platter and shared it with my son. Ahi, salmon, surf clam, mackeral, scallops, shrimp, cod, etc etc. with a side of white rice. All fresh, all wonderful. This was displayed in bite side pieces on a platter and not in sushi rolls with rice and seaweed and a selection of Japanese and local beers. Delightful quick service, and as we looked up midway into our meal: a packed reception area that spilled out to a crowd on the street. Arrive early.

Great food, great owners!

We love this place! We always have great service even though the restaurant is usually very crowded. We have moved to Denver, and visit Toyoda every time we come back home. It's our favorite place to eat, hands down!

Hoped for Better

By SeattleSara |

We got to Toyoda Sushi early to ensure we would get a table and avoid a wait. After being sat, we waited 10-15 minutes to order. Tables next to us that ordered after us, were served first. The table next to us ordered 5 large plates, while we ordered 3 smaller plates and one appetizer and their orders came out immediately. They had ate and left before we even got our food. Our appetizer and two of our items came out 1/2 hour after we ordered. Waited another 10 minutes for the remaining order. The most aggitating part was waiting for our check. ALL the tables next to us were brought their bill, yet we waited. We finally had to flag down the wait staff to bring us the check. Then we waited another 20 minutes for them to bring it back, which had to be prompted by again asking. I really had high hopes, but will be visiting the many other wonderful sushi options in the greater Seattle area.

Busy for Good Reason

By mstarrynight |

It's busy for a reason. Portions and quality are wonderful. Prices match. $60 for the large serving of sushi which comes with 11 pieces of generously cut fish plus a six piece roll and two egg pieces for dessert. The table next to us ordered the large sashimi plate. It was very impressive. Next time I'm going to try that. $90 The shrimp and vegetable tempura with sushi comes with two maki rolls and two pieces of tempura shrimp alongside some good vegetables. $30 A little on the oily side for me but I know that's something that many of my friends love in a tempura dish. We were served a complimentary noodle salad as well as miso soup with seaweed tofu, to begin our meal. Servers were regular with filling our water and making sure empty dishes disappeared quickly. Wait staff were really great. The popular place to sit with was the bar. Approximately eight seats. Hostess was grounded and hospitable without trying to impress. I like that very much. She knew the six of us waiting in line were eager and she was courteous without overpromising. Street parking was full because it was 630 on a Thursday night. Try the back behind the restaurant there were a couple of parking places there.

Our favorite Japanese restaurant in Seattle

By croelin1000 |

This is the one restaurant in Seattle that we frequent the most. Sit at the bar - freebies come your way, and you get to watch the guys at work. The slices of fish are much thicker than at other places, and it's always fresh. The rolls are a little on the smaller side, but the price includes miso soup and a cold noodle appetizer, so it's worth it. Note: they're closed Mondays and Tuesdays, and only open for dinner the other days. Arrive early for dinner if you don't want to wait long.

Great Sushi!

By cowboyMt |

I have eaten sushi all over the western U.S., and this restaurant serves some of the best. The only negatives are parking (plenty in parking lot behind the restaurant, but finding it isn't intuitive) and small dining area. The food, though, made up for any shortcomings. It was excellent!

Stunned

I would be shocked and appalled by the opinions of people leaving 2 or 3 star reviews of this wonderful, magical place if I wasn't so grateful that those persnickety patrons aren't going to return and take up space at the absolute treasure that is Toyoda Sushi. No soup for you, next! 5 stars, no notes.
