Good italian trattoria!!!

By Nicole M |

i'm italian as the owner of the restaurant/trattoria. Vittorio, the owner, is very kind and friendly. The restaurant design and furniture are really as the italian style. At Vittorio you can test a lot of italian dishes as well as the pizza which is really really good! It is made in the classic italian oven! Try the BRESAOLA,PROSCIUTTO CRUDO,MOZZARELLA DI BUFALA,GNOCCHI and of course HAVE A TEST OF THE PIZZA! I would go back there definitly again!!!

A Fabulous culinary experience

By GiAmAmAi |

This food is the really Italian!! The tests are just the same that I experienced over there. This is the only place in San Francesco where is possible to test such an authentic southern Italian food. Pappardelle ox tail are incredible. Two days of cooking like in the hold time in Italy. Pizza with spicy 'ndjua from Calabria is amazing. No place you can find that in San Francisco. The service is perfect. Wine list is full of first class Italian wine as well as Californian. Sicilian Cannoli are phenomenal. THE BEST IN TOWN

Great food, great owners

By Mike G |

Awesome Italian that blows away the rest of the city's "pasta and marinara" tourist traps. Felt like I was back home in NY. Owners are incredibly friendly, you can tell they genuinely appreciate and enjoy having guests, including our 14-month old. A little out of the way if you're just visiting SF, but great for locals or if you find yourself out by West Portal. Well worth a visit!!!

Best Carbonara since Italy trip

By Edwelsh |

We first had Carbonara in Rome, it’s the best, this was really close. But first we started out with the Polpette Antipasto, homemade meatballs with toasted bread. The meatballs were good, but the bread may have been even better. We split an order of Spaghetti Carbonara with Pancetta and Parmigiana Cheese and could not eat all of it, we didn’t eat the egg served on top. My Iced Tea was fresh and refreshing. The place had plenty of help, you don’t see that much these days. The owner even came over and talked to us, then interrupted his conversation with someone else to say goodbye to us on our way out. Our server was very nice, she was always around. This is how it is supposed to be, delightful meal!

Warm, welcoming and really delicious

By Denise A |

Being Italian, I am really picky about Italian food. This is some of the best I’ve had at a restaurant. The Eggplant Parmesan used very thin layers of eggplant beautifully done. Actually, everything we had was amazing but what I really liked was how warmly welcomed we were and how they quickly made a table for our sized group and accommodated the children so nicely by bringing their meals immediately, as well as our wine. Loved this place!

Excellent food

Dined here with family. Great for kids. Casual. Very crowded but worth the wait.We all ate the specials and they were all excellent. Great service. Very helpful servers help guide you to the right wine and food.

Perfect for a celebration

By Cherie Q |

Why did we wait so long to try out this West Portal gem? Because we loved Cafe for All Seasons and wanted to preserve the memories of many celebrations there until it shuttered and reincarnated as another Italian restaurant. Finally we surrendered to friends’ rave reviews and chose to have a birthday dinner there. Much to our satisfaction, because Trattoria da Vittorio turned out to have the perfect balance of good food, great service and warm atmosphere. From our call for reservations for our party of 10 that included 2 toddlers, to the time we traded arriverderci, we got attentive service that was not pushy or put-on. Even when the place got packed that Tuesday night, our server, ensured that each member of our party felt special, our orders came fast, and our table was always tidied up. The birthday boy had the Osso Buco special with polenta. It was tender and flavorful but needed a bit more salt, after he started with scrumptious Brussels sprouts with pancetta and then Spaghetti Carbonara. My grilled Branzino came in 2 fillets atop asparagus and mashed potatoes - delicious. The pastas and pizzas were a hit with our multigenerational group, especially the Uovo (topped with eggs, pancetta, wild mushroom and buffalo mozzarella) and the Scialatielli Pescatora (seafood in tomato sauce). Who comps a birthday treat anymore? Vittorio gifted us with lovely Tiramisu, that we enjoyed along with the Creme Brûlée Cheesecake and Peach Sorbet. We brought a bottle of Cava and ordered a bottle of Super Toscan Frescobaldi. (They don’t waive corkage if you order a bottle.) Our tab was $521 (before tip), a super deal for 8 hungry adults and 2 tots.

Pleasant Italian Place in West Portal

By Alexinasf |

We're San Francisco natives who enjoy getting to know the many places in our neighborhood, and when our Airbnb guests ask for our recommendations, we can speak from experience. Sometimes they bring back stories of new-to-us restaurants, too! We heard good reports about Trattoria da Vittorio, and dropped in on a Monday noon-ish for lunch. We've spent many months living in Italy, so when we saw their menu, we were impressed with its seeming authenticity. Passing up heavier fare, we chose the Bistecca (Steak) Panino, with sliced Black Angus, provolone and grilled peppers and onion ($12) and the Grilled Chicken Panino, with buffalo mozzarella, sautéed spinach ($11). The steak seemed rather skimpy, flat, and overcooked, and lacked any real punch. The chicken was perfectly prepared, not rubbery like some chicken breasts can be. It also could have benefited from a bit more flavor. We were asked whether we'd prefer sparking water, and were pleasantly surprised that we were not charged for this. The best surprise, however, was choosing to share a Crème Brûlée Cheesecake, which was out of this world. In fact, their dessert menu offered several other tantalizing options, including a Caramel Gelato with Sea Salt and Olive Oil, so perhaps we will return for just coffee and desserts. I'd summarize that this restaurant would be perfect for those who do not like overly challenging food, or strong flavors. It felt like "Italian Lite."

Bravo, Vittorio!

Love this neighborhood place! Wonderful, lovingly handcrafted food is prepared here on a daily basis. It's not fancy but a trattoria isn't supposed to be! A fun atmosphere with charming servers.

Incredible Antipasto and Pasta Dishes

By Teri S |

There were six of us for a birthday dinner and all of us loved the antipasto and our individual meals. I had the pescadaro pasta and it was delicious. My daughter loved the carbonara and my husband raved about his rigatoni. Staff brought out yummy dessert for the birthday celebration. I can't wait to go back to this incredible place. It is the best Italian food that I've had in the Bay Area.

Good, but not great Italian Food!

By NancySF |

I am surprised at all the 5 star reviews. First off, parking in West Portal is difficult, but if you are persistent you can find a spot. We have been trying all the restaurants in this area and there are quite a few good ones. I must first say that the service was very good. The waiters are very friendly. We ordered wine, and then we had a special of the day which was barramundi which was very good over a few stalks of fresh asparagus. It was served with some roasted potatoes which were ok. We also had the combination breaded chicken and eggplant parmesan. The eggplant was pretty good, although it was a tad bitter. The chicken, which I assumed would be a breaded chicken breast was a flat 1/4 inch piece of breaded chicken. It had no sauce, just the breading and it was not so great. They do serve bread with dipping oil, but again, I was not impressed. The bread was a bit dry and the oil was just plain olive oil. We do not plan on going back, so again, I am surprised by all the 5 star reviews.

Va Bene!

By Tommaso A |

We have been here just to have wine at the bar, and at lunch. Solid Italian/Calabrese food. Beet Salad, eggplant parm, rigatoni, pizza margarita. Great neighborhood find on West Portal

Pizzaaaaaaaa!

By misopiso88 |

We were bringing pizza to a friends for dinner and settled on Trattoria Da Vittorio. So fast, we couldn't believe it. Friendliest help too. Highly recommend!

Favorite restaurant on West Portal

By SarahfromCo |

Pricey, but worth it. We've always had good service, wonderful wine and delicious food here. The desserts are also always incredible.

Intimate italian food with great flavors

By jim590 |

Friends suggested this restaurant in west portal. Glad we went. The food was amazing. I had the best lasagna, and the eggplant parmesan was great. Great friendly service. When we arrived, the place was packed, so we put our name in and enjoyed a drink across the street. For tourists, venture away from downtown San Francisco to west portal. It will be worth it.

Hidden gem in West Portal! Consistently delicious Italian fare!

By SasMonti |

Perfect restaurant in West Portal neighborhood for groups to eat family style and try all the delicious food on the menu. Also good for dates with the homey and romantic vibe. The beginning ~ Burrata Bruschetta, the toast was crisp, the prosciutto as it should be and the Burrata perfect. The fried Calamari and artichokes served with a mint and olive oil dip -- oh yes it was good. Also loved the Caprese con Burrata, if you can't tell already say Burrata and it's a magic word for me!!! I order this Burrata toast every time I come here. The entrées ~ What got me to this place was my craving for Carbonara, and boy was it delicious creamy but still light and very tasty. The Porcini Ravioli bread sopping perfection...next came the Pollo Milanese, crisp crust and fresh tomato sauce with just the right anoint meant of garlic and oil. The highlight of entrees this evening was the Braised Short Ribs -- oh my! Pizza ~ my favorite was the San Danielle which had prosciutto, wild arugula tomato and mozzarella and especially loved the thin light and flaky crust. Our group also shared the Margherita, a classic and always reliable to order. Desert ~ hold onto your chair arms for Nutellino Calzone. Yup, simply a treasure. A calzone filled with warm Nutella what a delicious idea and the presentation was amazing too. Also adored the tiramisu! I can't say anything more about how much I loved this place and recommend it to anyone wanting an impeccable Italian meal with a great ambiance. Solid five stars for me and my friends! My boyfriend and I come here a lot too! Never been disappointed.

Amazing restaurant!

By StephanieL67 |

Sitting at the bar, watching our calzone and pizza get prepared and cooked was such a treat. The food is always amazing as is the staff. Vittorio really knows how to run a restaurant. Kudos Vittorio!

A great neighborhood restaurant

By Ken B |

I love their pizza and their pastas. Pizza are wood oven prepared, crispy and nice crust. Great wine list and their service is fast, friendly and professional. They also have a barata pizza that is one of my favorites. Good for lunch too, just a few outdoor tables, but you can bring your pet.

We had a lovely lunch at Trattoria Da Vittorio In San Francisco

We had a lovely lunch at Trattoria Da Vittorio in San Francisco. The food was delicious and the servers were charming and professional. We only had non alcoholic drinks. The decor was beautiful.

Great Food, Great Staff

By jb61555 |

The food is wonderful. Great presentation, and I have never had a bad meal there. The Calamari is unique with artichokes. All the dishes are top notch. The food is only surpassed by the staff.

Good Food - Above Average

By BasqueWanderer |

My wife and I decided on Da Vottorio for a Monday evening dinner. I was raised in this neighborhood and found the clientele to be locals with a just a few apparent visitors. The service was excellent except for the strong breath of the waiter. Seating was quick and we were not rushed through the meal in any way. This restaurant only services beer & wine - no alcohol. The food was fresh and of good quality but a bit shy on taste. All in all a good experience and atmosphere. The food is above average but does not reach "very good". The staff did accommodate two groups of 12 without much trouble though I think that they had made reservations in advance.

Get in my Tummy!

Very authentic cooking, easy neighborhood dining experience with great friendly service. Upscale feel with a laid back family vibe. I will be back.

A perfect Italian neighborhood restaurant

By Gordon C |

This place is the quintessential neighborhood restaurant. You may ask why I rate this place with five stars, the same as Acquerello-a two Michelin stared Italian Restaurant. Because it does what it does (simple southern Italian) every bit as well! The portions are so large you can split everything so the price is very reasonable. My husband and I shared a Calamari appetizer and split a Caesar salad and seafood pasta. You really can’t beat this place for a casual Italian dinner in a very pleasant neighborhood and terrific waitstaff.

Anniversary/valentines dinner

By Ken D |

We started a tradition years ago... going out on the 15th of the month to celebrate our first date, we have been together for 17 years now,so, it is fun every month to try someplace different. This month it fell on the day after valentines, so, we decided to do a combination valentines/15th dinner. My wife had heard good things about Trattoria da Vittoriio, so, we decided to check it out. We were lucky to get seated immediately after walking in, as it was after 6pm. The wait staff was very efficient and friendly.. our drinks and appetizers showed up very fast. Our meals came out soon after. I went with the rigatoni Calabrese(rigatoni with sausage), my wife had the traditional spaghetti and meatballs... everything was delicious, the meatballs were just right, not to heavy... my sauce was flavorful with a little bit of spice ... just the right amount on the plate... we finished it off with dessert..my wife had a chocolate soufflé cake, myself-tiramisu... delicious... the whole experience was great... I think we now have a new go to restaurant...

Authentic Southern Italian Cooking

By VinnieMcFinch |

Along with my father, who like the owner is from Calabria (way down south in Italy), I visited this new restaurant. Our meals were terrific, and I especially liked the eggplant parmigiana. It was the best I have ever had. Service was friendly and efficient. Highly recommended!

Fabulous dinner!

By Deanna B |

Stopped in for a dinner on a Friday evening. Best lamb dinner we've ever had. The lamb was so tender and flavorful it melted in your mouth, and it was paired with the best gnocchi ever as well. We also had an amazing calzone and an excellent rigatoni. Best of all, the service was so good that everyone in the place was noticeably happy to be there. We were all treated like family and thoroughly enjoyed our experience. We'll be back!

Unbeatable Service, superior food

By crowleyinpa |

We were here to celebrate our son's birthday. We were greeted by the Maitre'd who was very welcoming and warm. He greeted us by name and showed us to our table. Roberto was our waiter. He was excellent. He was very knowledgeable about the wine list. He knew each special dish of the day and described them beautifully in his wonderful Italian accent! He was patient as we decided. He was more like a gracious host than a waiter. The food was wonderful. I had the Handmade Scialatielli with fresh seafood in tomato sauce. The sauce was rich and thick, but just covered the wonderful pasta and seafood, which was plentiful. The sauce complimented the dish without overpowering it. My husband had Rigatoni with sausage, bell peppers and onions in a rich, fresh tomato sauce. It tasted like a homemade sauce that was made with tomatoes from the garden. Our son had Pollo Milanese, substituting the eggplant with fresh vegetables and mashed potatoes at Roberto's suggestion. The chicken was lemony, crunchy outside but tender and moist inside. The potatoes were buttery and smooth with a hint of garlic. We shared a tiramisu for dessert. It was soaked in rum, light and delicious! Our meal, with 2 glasses of wine and two beers was $109. And worth every penny. We look forward to our next visit to San Francisco so we can go back!

One of the best pizzerias in town

By AverageTraveller1 |

The pizza is thin-crust and comes out with a smoky flavor. Enough said! They favor good, seasonal, local ingredients - for example, heirloom tomatoes now - and fresh mozzarella. They serve salted caramel gelato with olive oil, and it tastes so good! They are very friendly. How friendly? Southern Italian friendly... and generous with the mimosas and tiramisu!

Great Traditional Italian Food with Great Owner

By Loungesong |

If you are looking for something more traditional Italian rather than Italian American (e.g. Joe's) then this is a great option. Napoli style pizzas are delicious as is the Lasagne and pasta dishes. Vittorio himself will be very welcoming and ensure you have a memorable meal.

Excellent service

By sashkow |

We had late Saturday lunch here. The pizza, the fried calamari, the past we ordered were tasty and nice. We have also ordered lemonade but never reached us. It was included in the bill and we have asked the waiter to removed it. We have received one minute later the new check and tiramisu as complimentary.

Amazing and authentic Italian Food and Service!!!

By sandranazzal |

Trattoria Vittorio is such a wonderful, warm and inviting neighborhood restaurant. Vittorio and his staff are very personable and offer amazing service and food. The service is equally top notch—having a glass of wine at our favorite spot at the bar or an amzing pizza, pasta, eggplant parmigiana or grilled salmon or branzino. Always so fresh and flavorful. SO thankful this is in my neighborhood!!!!!

Pleasant atmosphere, good food.

By josephine m |

First time to this restaurant. We went on a week night so we were seated immediately. Food was great. The only con was we were RUSHED thru the entire meal. There are plenty of servers, however the restaurant was not full to capacity and there was noone waiting yet the servers were rushing around. We were given the menus and immediately asked if we were ready to order. We asked if we could order our drinks and have time to review menu. Again when drinks were brought the server wanted our order. We were 6 people and as soon as the server saw that 2 had finished he cleared their plates - giving us the feeling to hurry up. We didn't have dessert and immediately were given to check. We would like to return but are leary because of the "energizer bunnies" rushing clients.

Molto Bene

Love this neighborhood restaurant and come often. Pizza is amazing and staff are so pleasant. Prefer to dine outside - noisy inside - great lunch spot

Wonderful. Amazing Service.

By Albertma222 |

This is one of those restaurants I want to give a 11/10 to. The food is so amazing, you'll want more even after you're stuffed! I personally recommend the soup and the calamari. They give you very generous servings. Their service is amazing. My kid was treated like an adult and he loved it! The servers are true gentlemen, and they gave the place a really warm atmosphere. Bad things? Barely! The only thing that I didn't like is how crowded it can get there sometimes. I recommend Trattoria da Vittorio and would definitely come back again.

Average neighbourhood Italian restaurant

By dan p |

Lot's of dinners there, food is OK nothing spectacular, neighborhood Americanized Italian. Wine list is OK and the service is good. Price ratio OK....sometimes hit and miss, but you can take your chances.

A great neighborhood dining option

By David P |

I've visited this neighborhood for 30+ years. This location has housed many different restaurants in that time. This is one of the best. Service and cuisine are authentic Italian. The food is excellent. Service is fast. You may expect a dining experience of this quality to take all evening but you can be in and out of here rapidly if you choose. Petrale sole was particularly good this night. My wife had pear stuffed pasta in gorgonzola. OMG! Worth a visit from anywhere in the City. Take the MUNI to West Portal and you're there.

Go-to Place for Pizza and Pasta in West Portal

By Yog-Sothoth |

We recently moved to the neighborhood and are relentlessly sampling all the restaurants on West Portal. Da Vittorio graciously slotted us in on a busy Saturday. This is a large, bustling place filled with couples and families of all ages. Risotto was sinfully delicious; the pizzas look great and next time we will sit at the bar and enjoy one with a glass of wine. Large assortment of value-priced wines here. Fast and friendly service.

Superb food, great value

Got here around 5:00 pm on a Sunday evening, by the time we left there were several groups waiting out the door. Great food and service.

Loved it!

The Italian staff was so great and helpful. Food was delicious and we so enjoyed our Saturday night.

Great original Italian food!

I had dinner at Trattoria Da Vittorio with colleagues. Lovely atmosphere and adorable food. Absolutely stunning service. Highly recommend a visit.

"Great surprise"

By beachbabes512 |

Wow, what can i say! This is a neighborhood Italian Restaurant that we found and decided to have dinner. Our waiter was very friendly and we were seated right away. Our water came immediately and the bread and olive oil was quickly put on our table. Even though the restaurant was crowded at 5:30 PM, he took time to go over the menu and let us know the specials of the evening. We were delighted with the menu that had so many wonderful choices that it was hard to make a decision. We ordered the Buffalo Mozzarella with tomato and fresh basil, with a Balsamic Vinegar to share as an appetizer. It was wonderful! I ordered the homemade Fiocetti which was stuffed with three cheeses and pear in a creamy Gorgonzola sauce which was outstanding. One of my friends ordered the Rigatoni Calarbrese with.Italian sausage which was in as she said, "a great tomato sauce". It was a large portion and she enjoyed every mouthful. My other friend ordered a Porterbella Mushroom in a cream sauce which she also said was delicious. We were very pleased with both the service and dinners and would definitely go back Everyone was very friendly, the couple next to us also raved about there dinners. They said the fried calamari was coated just right and cooked to perfection as was there spaghetti carbonara , they finished all that off with a Margharita pizza and Timarsu, This restaurant was a great find!

Disappointed

By PPP68 |

We have been regular lunch customers for awhile and found our last two visits disappointing. The Chicken Parmesan was soggy, not the crispy delight of past visits. The accompanying spaghetti was oversauced with a tomato sauce that tasted like I’ve just been poured from the can. The lasagna which we’ve had many times was also oversauced. Has there been a change in cooks or management?

Now, That's Amore!

By Question91074 |

My wife and I were in the neighborhood getting nails done at the white daisy, and we decided to try this place out for the first time. Every restaurant we have tried in West Portal is great, but this might be the greatest of them all!! As a traveler that has been to Italy, this is Italy in America; without a doubt. My lasagna was out of this world! I can't tell you how great this food is - you have to see for yourself.

Delicious!

By Melanie M |

I had the porcini mushroom ravioli with truffle sauce, it was delicious! This restaurant is not pretentious, located in a nice, not touristy neighborhood. I'll return.

A West Portal Gem

By Emiliamd13 |

We have been several times and each time, we are thrilled with the experience. They offer a great Sunday brunch with a breakfast pizza, and other traditional breakfast items. Their lunch and dinner items are always fresh, delicious and light. Italian food isn't meant to be heavy and greasy. The ingredients used here are fresh and one can taste the effort the chefs put into the food. The mozzarella di bufala tastes just like the one I had in La Campania, Italy...the fresh grilled salmon, the homemade pasta...all very good. The service is always exceptional and the staff is always very attentive. The wine pours are very generous. They don't take reservations but the wait on the patio is worth it in the evenings. The owner often pours Prosecco for those waiting for a table. This restaurant is a West Portal favorite for many.

Good Italian Food in Busy, Noisy Setting

By Jonathan F |

We enjoyed our recent Thursday evening dinner at this small neighborhood Italian restaurant. Despite the busy crowds, we were seated promptly and served expeditiously. It was, however, very noisy, and hard for the three of us to hear each other. The food was overall very good, although we were less than thrilled with the somewhat bland salmon dish. However, the Fiocchetti Handmade Pasta stuffed with 3 Italian cheese, pear in gorgonzola cream sauce was outstanding and reason enough to go back. My son loved the meat lasagna dish. We did not order any pizza on this visit, but saw it on other tables and it looked amazing. We will come back again sometime.

Fun and tasty evening

By martinione |

There were six family members with two being hungry teenagers. It is a relatively small restaurant but by being there at 5:50 we were comfortably seated. We ordered 5 appetizer plates to split. Calamari, Brussels sprouts- love that cheese sauce- bruschetta platter, etc. all delicious and plentiful. For dinners which we also split- we had the Petrale, Gnocchi , Eggplant Parmesan and Salmon Risotto. All were equally tasty. Of course Desert. Sorbets, Nutella crepe and Tiramisu. The tiramisu and mango sorbet were my favorites. Good reasonable wine list. Our waiter was excellent and added to a very pleasurable evening out. Will definitely revisit next trip to Bay Area.

Good family restaurant

By Pam F |

We were taken to this place by some friends who say it's the only local restaurant they go to. I must admit, it IS good. A real homey atmosphere, great service and the food was wonderful. As others have said a bit on the pricey side for what you get. Get there early though as the place fills up VERY quickly.

The Kind of Neighborhood Place You Look For

By Scapperdan |

We have been here twice on Sundays for what they call brunch but is served well into the afternoon. Tasty Italian pasta and pizza. Have not had anything that wasn't very good and my son is picky. Service is friendly and welcoming. Worth a bit of effort for a visit.

Cucinare con passione

By Califordan |

My husband and I celebrated Gay Pride Day with a quiet dinner here. Though I've read that the hard surfaces make for a noisy dining room, we lucked out and got a side table right away at the quiet end of day. Hubby opted for the daily special, a greasy but tasty all-pork adaptation of saltimbocca, served with delicious freshly grilled asparagus. I went with a regular menu option: beef short ribs Calabrese which was succulent & fork-tender, served with standard-issue sauteed vegetable compote. A good spectrum of wines by the glass.

Good but overpriced

By Liv121 |

I came here because my family members highly recommended this restaurant. It opens at 5:30 pm and fills up quickly so you have to go early to find parking and get a seat. It was good but i felt that it didn’t live up to the hype that I expected. I had the rigatoni and while it was tasty, it was a dish I could have made at home.

West Portal dinner

By BPenuliar2015 |

Went back to Trattoria Da Vittorio after several months . This time we ordered the lamb shank with gnocchi. I like this dish and surprisingly I also liked the gnocchi . For dessert , we ordered the tiramisu. I recommend you try their tiramisu. It's light. The first time I went here I ordered the risotto. Don't order it . It's really hard to find a good risotto.

Neighborhood jewel

Fantastic southern Italian food at its best. Restaurant noisy but friendly, with a great staff and even better food. Really worth a stop.

New Year's Day Dinner Delight

By Joe C |

Went here for New Years Day with family - 6 adults and 2 children. We ordered a mixed antipasta for the table. We were served several types of bruschetta, fried calamari, and a plate of meats over arugula. Each was better than the next and it didn't take long for our gang to finish that off. Everyone had something different for a main course - several pastas, pizzas for the children, a salad and a couple of meat dishes. I had the spaghetti with meatballs which dish was flavorful and the meatballs moist and delicious. Also, every plate was plentiful. And the prices are reasonable. The place was crowded with customers waiting in line for empty tables to become available. Yet, the service was attentive, friendly, not rushed. This was truly a delightful dining experience and a great way to start off the new year.

so disappointing

By Anna C |

Came with someone who highly recommended, ordered spaghetti with meatballs and lasagna. Worse bland food ever. Lasagna was tasteless and I would have preferred a can of spaghetti O's. The meatballs were ok but only got 3 of them. Nice restaurant, good location and good service but overall disappointing. Not going back.

Great food and service

By TechMarauder |

I was really happy with my visit here. The food was excellent and the service was warm, friendly, and informative. It's an upscale casual place without being pretentious. I will definitely be back.

This is an excellent Italian restaurant. Very good food and excellent service. They just build an outdoor space to sit more comfortably. I definitely enjoy the meal and will go back. The lasagna is incredible. Excellent choice for wine and other beverages too. Definitely some amazing Italian food

Amazing Restaurant!

By Hyacinth K |

Vittorio and his crew catered my daughter's Bat Mitzvah on 5/4/19 and they were amazing! Vittorio was so easy to work with, flexible, generous, and very professional. Not to mention the food was delicious! The day of the event, they showed up early, the tables were beautiful and they were so helpful throughout the night! If I could give them more "stars", I would! Everything was perfect because of Vittorio and his crew!! Thank you!!

I truly love this restaurant

By Ken B |

Hands down, best pizza in town. Really! The servers are amazingly friendly, how they remember everybody is a gift. Lots of yummy pastas to choose from. I often feel like I a on vacation in Italy when I eat here.

italian food as its finest

By BakasyonZ |

Honest to goodness italian food - we ordered margherita pizza, fiocchetti handmade pasta stuffed with 3 kinds of cheeses in pear gorgonzola cream sauce - so uniquely put together which makes the dish to die for! garbanzo soup & insalat cesare .. fantastic menu..we will definitely see you again & again...

Friendly Neighborhood Spot

By MaiaTheTraveler |

The Trattoria is located on a busy market street (which I mention since visitors to the city can get just about anything they need here) in West Portal - which does NOT have the best weather in town, but: the food here is excellent (some of the pasta being homemade). Staff is very nice, attentive. The place used to have a full complement of Italian waiters, which made for a homey and fun experience, since some members of my family speak Italian. No more Italian waiters, though - which makes me wonder if the restaurant has passed out of true Italian hands. All the same, the food is authentic. Appetizers are generous and fresh. Pasta is not served with any vegetable, but other dishes are. Outside area for dining. Try it.

Walk in Dinner

By Erlend A |

My wife, son and I were fortunate enough to get a table for three on the Saturday of the Memorial Day weekend without a wait. The food was simply delicious. My son had a pizza which was cooked in their pizza oven and he said it was the best he had had while in SF studying on a year abroad at SF State Uni. My wife had the veal which she said was excellent and I had one of their specials which was a seafood with squid pasta and it was simply delicious- loaded with all sorts of seafood including some king prawns. If you enjoy real Italian food with fresh ingredients then you must try this restaurant

Da Vittorio NEVER disappoints

By Vlad R |

Trattoria Da Vittorio is a true neighborhood gem. West Portal wouldn't be the same without it. I cross-crossed the entire Italy many times over and tasted all kinds of food there. I would normally be the first to tell you the Italian cuisine in the States doesn't come close to the genuine Italian food there. Well... Da Vittorio is it. Come here for a family celebration, come here for a romantic dinner, come here for lunch. You will come away happy!

Lovely trattoria experience

This place has been a restaurant in West Portal for years. I'm not sure how long Vittorio has occupied the spot, but it is darned good! We had carbonara, with a difference - a fried egg on top rather than beat into the sauce. That was good. The veal scallopini was very good. The petrale of sole was also very good, but the thickness of the fillet led us to suspect that perhaps they were using tilapia instead of petrale of sole. It also acked the sweetness that comes with sole! For desserts, the sorbets were great- rare white peach and a robust mango. Tiramisu is good too, and they topped it off with additional whipped cream! My hosts are regulars here, I mean 3 times a week they're here....

Must see!

This is an adorable establishment in West Portal that brings a true taste of Italy stateside. Everything I have eaten in the number of times I have come here has offered a divine taste of Italian dishes at their best. And they have a wood fire kiln!!

Authentic Italian Food

By 1SFOSO |

The food here is always fresh and the atmosphere is very welcoming. A full wine menu and even some nice half-bottles. On our last visit we had an excellent spaghetti with all-beef polpette (enough foe 2 meals if you have an app) and a caprese panini that came with the soup of the day, a delicious cream of asparagus. This place is always croeded in the evenings but come during the day if you want to linger - the Italian-speaking staff will cjeck back on you to make sure you continue to be well taken care of.

(it used to be) an Italian restaurant...

By Angelo P |

Honestly it was better some times ago than now...but something should have been changed over recent time ended up there recently for Sunday lunch and actually there were no Italians around: not between the staff, not between the customers and for sure no Italians in the kitchen. We took four different pastas and all of them were just “too much”: too much sauce, too liquid sauce and, being an Italian, it was kinda outrageous seeing a sunny side up egg on top of my carbonara...that anyways tasted pretty good but can’t forget that freak show of the sunny side up egg... Pretty good the desserts: a notable affogato to be mentioned

Great Italian food

We have come here on several occasions and have been pleased each time. Service is very good and food very tasty. It can get very noisy, so my advise it to come early and try to avoid Friday night!

Welcome addition to West Portal! Can't wait to go back!

By StephanieL67 |

Trattoria da Vittorio recently opened in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco. Having walked by the location during the months it was being remodeled, was anxious to try out this new restaurant. The lunchtime and dinner times seemed very busy with people waiting outside, but everyone in a great mood waiting for their seats. When we arrived, I thought we were going to have to wait, but we were able to sit at the counter (best place in the house, I think) where you can watch them make the pizza and cook in the brick oven. The staff is very nice and personable. The food was extraordinarily good. We shared the Salad Mista then my husband had the Seafood Risotto while I had the Lasagna and our son only wanted pasta with white sauce. We were treated with a complimentary appetizer of some type of special naan-type bread (yummy!) then as our meal ended, we were surprised by a complimentary slice of the Tiramisu (outstanding!). Oh yes, the wine list was great. The restaurant was busy, busy, but the staff and hostess handled it very well. Can't wait for a warm afternoon or evening to enjoy our meal at one of the two outside tables. The other Italian restaurant on the block needs to now "step up their game"! Before we left, owner Vittorio stopped by. He is so nice and friendly. Welcome to the neighborhood Vittorio! We will be back!

Excellent

Excellent food and service. Had a party of nine they sat us down with in five minutes. Everyone in our party loved their dish and pizza’s.

Very yummy

By RandiM2 |

The bruschetta sampler as an appetizer very yummy. The smoked salmon & capers, fava bean, prosciutto and mozzarella, and plain ol' tomato was wonderful. I had the veal scallopini very tender and the sauce was tasty. Husband had the seafood pasta and loved it. He asked for some peppers and they brought him some Colombian peppers that he absolutely loved. Daughter had pesto with 3 cheese pasta. Very fresh. Dessert was creme brûlée cheesecake. We also had the Carmel gelato with sea salt and olive oil. OMG!! A lot of locals dine here. The wait staff was very attentive and the service was prompt. Highly recommend.

A Great West Portal Addition

By BobD686 |

A wonderful and authentic Italian restaurant. We started with Caesar salads which is large enough to share. Our friends each had a pizza which they said were very good. I had the lasagna which ranks up there as one of the best. Service was great. We will for sure return next time we visit SF

Ravioli with Mushrooms & Black Truffles

By Monica C |

You haven't lived until you've enjoyed mushroom ravioli with black truffles, a southern Italian specialty. MMMM! I'm no foodie and a little hard to please. But I can't even think of ordering anything else here. Charming Italian waiters don't hurt either, and yes you can try out your college Italian on them too. Plus you can dine out front, there are a few tables, and nowadays, that's a good idea, dining al fresco.

Plays above it's price range for a great night out

By penfoldSF |

My wife and I have been coming here since it opened and it has remained consistently our go-to restaurant in West Portal. The food is great - wonderful pasta, tasty pizzas and some interesting extra dishes such as the various bruschetas. That said, my wife often gets one of the main dishes that combines eggplant parmesan with a veal scallopini - she loves it. I often enjoy the Branzino (mediterranean sea bass) on special and if we want an extra treat, the nuttella calzone is the perfect way to finish, although many love the home made tiramisu. However, what lifts Vittorio's above being just a neighborhood jewel is the service. Friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, the waitstaff always make us feel welcome and always go the extra mile to ensure we have what we need. They really play above their league in this regard, so you're paying neighborhood prices for great food and getting fancy restaurant service. Oh, and kids seem to love this place so if you're going on a weekend earlier in the evening expect kids to be welcome. But note also that, as a fancier place, parents tend to do a good job of maintaining good behavior, so if you don't have kids, don't worry about screaming kids running all over the place and if you do have kids, please expect them to show good manners. We've been bringing our 1 year old here since she was born and she loves a bit of fish or pizza from our plates. Oh, and their brunch is good too. Paninis and the like.

Predictably good

By IrishGermanSwedish |

Pleasant room, nice out or in dining. Right on municipal railway lines. Quaint neighborhood with vintage look. Food is nice, some delicious. Service is hit or miss. You can be delighted by your actual Italian wait staff or totally ignored and overlooked. If the front door is open on a cold day, because the staff may want it open, it can be terribly uncomfortable and cold. Ask for it to be shut. The West side of the city can be very cold, damp, windy and foggy at times. One seeks out a cozy place, not a bone chilling wind corridor. The pizza over fires must overwhelm the busy staff. Vittorio himself is a lovely gentleman and takes good care of his customers as if they were at his home. Sometimes his staff does the same sometimes not. The food is good and southern Italian. sometimes the menu feels as if it does not change enough. Great for singles, couples and groups. Vittorio will also make a gluten free dish if given a week's advance notice. Now that is superior service.

Mud-week "get away" in town

By FVStrona |

As usual, Vittorio and his team make dinning mid-week a much needed pleasure. From the many homestyle standards to the creative daily specials- everyone is sure to find something to your fit your mood . Our visit tonight had a purpose; reconnect after a long stressful day with a nce meal. We achieved our goal!! With the old favorites of lasagna and the combo chicken and eggplant parm how could we go wrong. Portions are good sized but not overly "americanized". That means big enough to satisfy a hearty eater without the yucky overstuffed feeling. We even snuck in room for a cannoli and some caramel gelato with sea salt & olive oil. They don't take reservations, so on the weekends you're bound to wait a bit but it's well worth the wait. From a local hint; it's definitely worth checking out for lunch. We've come several times during their lunch service and have had just as good meals.

Noisy and crowded because the food is good and maybe also because the waiters are sexy

By Edward D |

We made reservations; when we arrived, the maitre d' apologized that is wife took the reservation and KNEW that Tratttoria da Vittorio does not take reservations. But then they made a special effort to get us seats as quickly as possible to accommodate that error. We felt kind of squished in but went with the flow, and this was really nicely prepared Italian food at a very reasonable price.

Great little Italian place

By cheshireskier |

We were wandering around San Francisco on our first day of vacation - we were getting hungry and saw this place - great menu and decided to give it a try. We had the Stroganoff and a fine red wine - it was very good. Very good service and it felt like a real neighborhood place.

Good neighborhood spot

By Victoria G |

Food is above an average Italian place with occasional specials that are quite nice. It's a pleasant place that can get quite crowded at times. The pasta and full entrees are very good, not excellent, the desserts less interesting. It appalls me that they use canned whipped cream on their desserts. When i complained I was told they could not handle dealing with real whipped cream. I was initially very excited to have a more upscale restaurant in West portal but really this is better but not excellent.

Great lunch

By Sharon R |

Lots to choose from on their menu ! Everything looked so good that it was hard to decide what to order. The pasta was great and the seafood excellent. We also shared a pizza Margherita which was the best I’ve had in a long time ! Would highly recommend this place.

Best cioppino ever

By Andrew H |

Very wonderful restaurant! Some friends took us there last night, and we really enjoyed ourselves. I was going to get the porcini ravioli, like my wife did, but I ended up going with the crab and lobster (fresh-water lobster, I think) cioppino. It was so good! They gave you a generous amount of crab, lots of legs and some good chunks of body meat, to crack into it; a lobster tail; several clams; and fantastic-tasting fish. The tomato base to the cioppino, too, really made it all work. It was perfect. Really the best cioppino I've ever had. Everything else was fantastic: I did try some bites of my wife's porcini mushroom ravioli, and I loved that; the wine list was very nice, lots of great Italians (I had a generous couple of glasses of Supertoscan and Chianti Riserva); the coffee was fantastic (we had decaf lattes); and the desserts! We had a caramel gelato, a chocolate souffle, and profiteroles. All three were stars (for me, the caramel gelato was the best, and for my wife, the chocolate souffle, but all three were marvelous). Profiterole enthusiasts will be pleased to know that they use pastry cream instead of the ice cream you often see in American profiteroles. The atmosphere is warm, inviting, friendly, and fun. There's a man with a trumpet or cornet who serenades you if you have a birthday. Everyone knows him and comes by to say hello. The server and the lady at the door were very nice. The interior feels homey and comfortable. This is not in a touristy location, but it is right on a Metro train line, so you can take the Metro (I think the K or the M lines go right by it, take the K Ingleside or M Ocean View line toward San Francisco State University from downtown). It's probably 15 or 20 minutes from downtown on the Metro. Trattoria da Vittorio is a very nice place! We do hope to return soon.

Outstanding!

By birdie57 |

Trattoria Da Vittorio was recommended to us by a few friends. While we understood it hadn't been open very long, the line was out the door a few minutes after we were seated. Well, the service was as good as a ten star restaurant from beginning to end -- very attentive, friendly and knowledgeable about the menu. We were all very hungry, so we started with wine and appetizers, which were very good. Just be careful... they pour more wine without asking, then charge you later. The three of us ordered different items, and all were excellent! Now, I understand why this place was recommended! We were far too full to order dessert! DO try this restaurant; you'll love it, too!

Good overall Italian restaurant

By Teresa Moby |

Dog friendly with only a few outdoor tables. Everything overall is good. The meatballs were a bit too lean for me but the flavor was good. We both like how thin the pizza crust was, reminds us of NY pizza. But the middle part was a bit soggy. We got chocolate souffle but it was more like a chocolate lava cake, which we didn't mind, it was good, not too sweet.

Bravo!

By DavidVsGoliath |

Outstanding Italian food is what you will find here. The staff was very friendly and I was seated and eating pretty quickly. The food came out looking gorgeous and I am happy to report that it tasted as good as it looked. I don't know if I could come all the time, but it is somewhere I will be going to again and telling my friends about without a doubt.

Specialità calabresi

I had dinner there, tomato soup and scialatelli with seafood. The food was good, the service prompt and friendly. It's a small restaurant quite popular, better to reserve.

Best lasagna and gnocchi ever

By Michelle A |

I heard about this restaurant on Travel Channel and Italian food is my favorite so we had to try it while in San Francisco. My husband and I both agreed it was the best lasagna we have ever had (and I am from a big Italian family, my husband is from Croatia). The service was unbelievable, they treated us like family. We ordered tiramisu to go and they gave us another to eat inside on the house. Can't say enough good things about this place, just wish we lived closer!!! Highly recommend!!

Food needs improvement

By Tina Montinola |

Located in a cozy neighborhood. The food is suppose to taste like authentic homemade Italian cooking. Read a lot of good reviews about this place so I had high expectations. Ambience is very rustic and homey. Service is excellent. We were a large group so we got a selection of appetizers, Pizza, and pastas. We had the Caprese con Burrata & the Organic Beet Salad to start then had the Salsiccia (Italian sausage, mushroom , tomato sauce, buffalo mozzarella cheese) & Uovo(Pizza with Eggs, pancetta, wild mushrooms, buffalo mozzarella) Pizzas and for the pastas we tried the Spaghetti Carbonara, Handmade Porcini Mushroom Ravioli and lastly the Spaghetti con Polpette Mamma Francesca’s homemade meat balls. Everything tasted BLAND. Had to add salt, pepper to add taste the the food. The carbonara tasted like egg, if you read my other reviews I usually give good ratings, first time to write poorly of the food. I will give it another chance though next time I’m in the area.

I know I am in the minority....

By Lee Ann M |

I gave this the third try- and I will not be returning. The lines are out the front door so I must be in the minority or I have been lucky enough to dine in some fabulous Italian restaurants in San Francisco. Trattoria Da Vittorio is overpriced and under seasoned. The pasta is undercooked, the sauces are out of a can. I ordered specialty items for the day and that always works in most restaurants- not this one. Everyone's meal tasted the same- bland with the same consistency- undercooked. Going back to a know favorite in West Portal- Spiazza's.

Average neighborhood Italian place - Meh

By bluevoter |

If your standard for Italian food is Olive Garden or Round Table, then Vittorio is a great place. It's a sincere, family-owned, and very popular place in San Francisco's West Portal neighborhood. But it falls short of the standards of the better neighborhood Italian places that can be found around town. Our family have been regulars at another Italian restaurant about a block closer to downtown, but thought that we should check out Vittorio's, seeing its popularity, even though it was about 10% more expensive. We ordered the same items - as closely as possible - as the other restaurant: veal scallopine marsala, gnocchi, and ravioli. The ravioli was very good, and the veal was OK, with a tasty sauce and plenty of mushrooms. The accompanying vegetables were crunchy, and the potatoes felt as if they had spent to much time under a heat lamp. The gnocchi was a major disappointment; it seemed as if it had been defrosted and heated, and then covered with tomato sauce. There was no way for us to tell if it was made in house or not.

Found 'em on Yelp, they are as good as Italy

By DjEmcee |

Loved the waiter, who sounded like "Luigi", the Italian guy in "Lady And The Tramp". Service is impeccable, and the quality is very high. Prices are reasonable for San Francisco. Although it is rated 4.5 on Yelp, I believe the actual rating should be 3.75 and I have rounded up to 4 stars. We've been to Rome and the place is good, but its not that great.

Splash and dash dinner, but excellent food

By Erik Ensing |

I had dinner here on a Thursday evening. The place was packed, but got a seating at the bar. Ordered the soup of the day and a fiocchetti. Both were prepared and served in no time and were of excellent quality. If your in the neighbourhood I would highly recommend this place.

A Truly Wow Experience!

By Carla W |

Excellent Italian menu with superb staff. It was a first time visit, but definitely not the last. We were greeted like friends and watched over throughout the meal. The charcuterie board was excellent. The salads were delicious. The Branzino was perfectly done and when we wanted to split a meal, they provided the extra side portions at no upcharge! I'm rarely this impressed! The Osso Bucco was cooked to perfection - Yum! And for dessert - the Tiramisu is the best I have ever had, including in Italy! A wow experience!

Consistently Great Food in a Gem of a Location

By David S |

West Portal hosts several good restaurants, but this particular place is amazing. Not only is the food excellent, but the service is friendly and the venue is superior overall. The pasta has a unique homemade quality to it - something you expect from freshly made pasta. Relaxed and pleasant, never formal, the service is attentive without being overbearing.

West Portal neighborhood treasure

By Mary E |

I had an urge for Sole Piccata so searched my favorite eateries in SF and was delighted to see that Trattoria da Vittorio had it on their brunch menu beginning at 11 am. It is also a regular item on lunch & dinner. What a superb meal with a glass of Greco di Tufo to accompany it. The meal comes with sauteed new potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, zuchinni, baby spinach leaves. Complimentary sweet Italian baugette slices with green EVOO. My tab was $30 plus before tip. This place is not at all pretentious and doesn't take reservations. I sat at a sunny window table & soaked up the autumn weather along with my tasty fish. Great wait staff and mostly neighborhood locals eating there and it was full just before 11:30am. Just a short four stop trip of about 10 minutes out on the underground Muni K,L, or M lines. West Portal Avenue is just a few blocks of shops, restaurants & other businesses so worth a trip on the streetcar line to get there.
