Authentic Mexican food

By Sam K |

Great authentic Mexican food. Very busy vibrant atmosphere for a Tuesday night. Great menu with lots of choice. Service was excellent

Mexican food with vegetarian choices

By Mrugesh B |

Dining at a restaurant full of happy human sounds is indeed enjoyable! We had our table reservation, and were seated promptly in spite of the long week-end rush. Found interesting vegetarian options on the menu, and enjoyed the food. Courteous and friendly staff made sure service was provided efficiently. The tables were a bit small, but adequate for our all adult group. Positive recommendation from our side!

Not coming back

By minnesotans4 |

We have been to this restaurant several times and really wanted to like it. My husband ordered the chicken enchilada and pulled out a 2-3 inch plastic string...really disgusting. My beef and chicken enchiladas really didn’t have much flavor. The margaritas have never been my favorite, too sour and rather expensive at $12 each. For lunch, a customer orders at the counter, orders at the bar, gets own sauces and silverware. Lunch can be quite crowded. Ceilings are low so it’s loud. Just can’t return with plastic in food.

Average food and Harsh Service

By Atul C |

The welcome was very dry and just kept going down. Bunch of friends, we were asking recommendation and the waiter behaved as if we were here to eat for free and felt annoyed. While the prices were on the higher side which we dont mind, but when service as such and food was average with things such as uncooked tacos, better to write this place off. We left and had to go another place to eat to make up for after.

Solid lunch near Moscone center

By biztrav123 |

Walk up to the counter and order from the wide variety of items and combinations, pay, gather your drinks and find a table . Indoor and outdoor seating. My business companions had a 2 item combo with Fish tacos, one had a burrito, and I had a one item combo with a pork enchilada and bought a Chile relleno a la carte. Food was pretty good. Fish tacos looked good, combo comes with rice and beans. Burrito was pretty large (though it looked like it was mostly rice) and my companion was very satisfied. The pork enchilada was rich and tasty. Thought the rice was kinda tasteless. The chili relleno was also huge. I'd go again

Great Food and Lively Ambience

By Sumita J |

If you are in San Francisco do make time to have a mexican meal! its very busy and if you can make a reservation it would be better. I did see some walkins but they had to sit outside and for dinner with San Fran weather it can get chilly. The food is really , although the seating is a little cramped. I had the Chile Verde, the pork was very tender and juicy. I had a margarita with raw mango, which was not that great. The mango was rather overpowering. Would visit again and recommend!

Busy for a reason - the food is great

By RHINOTHOMAS |

It’s a buzzing restaurant even on a Monday night, we hadn’t booked but we’re able to have a drink at the bar before we found a spot to sit. The service was good, the salsa and crisps as the complementary starter were very good. Main meals were excellent.

Busy place for lunch but authentic mexican food

By Craig A |

I went at lunch, grab a menu outside and wait in the long line while deciding what to get. The tacos are soft shell and fairly small so you will need two or three. I got the barbacoa and it was tasty. The complimentary chips (if you sit in the restaurant) were the best I have had, thin and crispy. Wash it down with a cold bottle of Victoria beer from Mexico.

Tacos and Drinks

By Allison E |

Had a really good meal at Tropisueno — chips and guacamole, chicken tinga and al pastor tacos, and black beans and rice. My drink was la violeta, which had a really unique and pleasant flavor. The atmosphere was upbeat and the wait time wasn’t as long as they had predicted initially.

Food was good but service needs lots of improvement

By Jwalk777 |

Let's start with the good. Food was good, some of it great. Fried plantains-OMG yum. All the tacos were tasty and the salsa trio that comes before the meal was really good. Also super cute-they end the meal with chupa chup lollipops. Now for the not so great, the staff although nice are not very present. We asked for extra dressing 3 times and finally after 20 minutes and 4 times we got it. Asked for water 3 times before we got it and more chips and salsa 4 times. Our app-the plantains came WITH our meal, but my salad, which was my meal came out way early. Also they never came back and asked if we wanted another drink or how we were doing-every time we needed something we had to flag someone down. And finally we waited 15 minutes and finally flagged our waitress down so we could pay our bill. Food was good but would not come back due to lack of service.

Always a delight

By tonyirish |

Cafeteria style ordering but top quality style food. This was our third visit and am always glad we get to come back. The food is authentic and flavorful. The staff and friendly and efficient. Only ever been here for lunch but hope to try dinner sometime.

Not worth the hype

By traveladvise85 |

Not the best mexican food. We were very excited to try this reataurant because of all the good reviews but the food was very disappointing. We ordered almost everything on the menu and nothing was great. Average mexican food.

Worst Mexican food ever

By Natalie W |

My family and I love our Mexican food but this was awful. No burritos/fajitas on the menu when those are the most popular choices so I ordered pork. The food came out in a few minutes so clearly it was reheated. The pork was awful, I had a few mouthfuls and could barely stomach another. The best part of the meal was leaving! Awful awful food, how this has 4 stars I will never know.

Good food and atmosphere

By Claw1974 |

Nice little restaurant. Casual dining where you order at the counter and a server brings out your food. Positive atmosphere. Good chips and salsa. They do have a fresh salsa bar. I got tacos and they were good. Beans and rice pretty good as well. Margarita was decent. Not a bad place. Has patio seating.

Gluten Free Food For the Soul

By ocaptmycapt |

I went here twice during my one week stay because the food was so good I could NOT get enough. The lunch menu was superb with the ability to pick and choose the taco of your choice along with tons of other options but why even mess with a classic. Then for dinner they had platos that were absolutely perfection. The chips are that perfect thin-crispy that you just cannot get enough of and the range of salsas and dips will leave you wanting more. My order got mixed up one night and they rushed to fix it and were so polite, so understanding, so sweet even though the place was JAM PACKED and I appreciate a restaurant that works that well under pressure. Y'all will always have my vote when we're in town!!

Okay

By sunshinestatedcs |

The location was great, food was okay and service not impressive at all. We definitely weren't impressed but it was okay. I certainly would not go back with all of the other options in the area.

Great food!

By Audreyroberts |

This was 4.5 . Our family ate ALL of our food so it was good !!. It was loud and our waiter was unpleasant. He pretty much ignored us, and when he finally did come check on us, he was very short with us did not seem happy to have his job. So we didn’t give it a five star purely because of our waiter.

Excellent Mexican food

By gino4634 |

I had dinner here alone while attending a conference. The wait for parties of 2 or more was at least 30 minutes but I got in right away to sit it a community table near (but not at) the bar. The chips came with three types of salsa. I ordered chicken quesadillas which were very good. The service was very fast for all aspects of the meal ( drinks, food order, food delivery, check). Being alone, that was great. I probably would not want it that fast if I had been with someone. My only complaint was the margarita. While it tasted good, there was so much ice, that it seemed to be gone after just a few sips.It also seemed a bit light on tequila. Overall I would recommend it.

Great restaurant with good food at a reasonable proce

By Niamh M |

Great Mexican food that everyone can enjoy. Our server was great and answered many questions while checking back with us regularly. Plenty of vegetarian and gluten free options for the people in our group with most dishes able to be made gluten free. Great food and a reasonable price will definitely recommend and go again if visiting San Francisco again.

Would eat there again

By M S |

Props to our bartender/server, Wayne. He was very helpful (and patient) with food suggestions. He and the rest of the staff were working their tails off, but took time to make sure we were taken care of at the bar. The food was very good, I will definitely go back.

Give it a try if you stay at the Marriott Marquis

By Brian B |

Food was very good. House margaritas were well worth it. Ordered 2, 3 item combos to try a bit of everything. Tacos and enchiladas were excellent. Flautas (which I would call Taquitos because they were made with a corn tortillas) were a bit over cooked for my liking. Tamales were a little dense (as well for my liking). Busy place on a Friday night, said 45min wait but we're were say in under 30 min. Service was good but could have been a bit better. Ordered guacamole and it came out quick, but no chips. Sat around and had to finally ask for chips so we could enjoy our appetizer. Overall a good experience, good food and good value (for San Francisco). If you are staying at the Marriott Marquis, it is an excellent choice for dinner and a cocktail that is literally outside the elevator door.

Good eats on a short timeframe

By ladybug118 |

The place is unconventional in terms of it being a sit down place. You line up to order, pay, then find your seat. They bring you chips you get your own salsa and water or alcohol. They bring the food out when it is ready - which is really quick. Since it is so close to the hotel we were staying at the line formed quickly, but moved fast. The staff was friendly and patience and quick. Great place to have lunch.

Fun for dinner

By Sue_Esterman |

Great Mexican food, lovely margaritas! handy to the centre of everything. If you like Mexican food, it's definitely a place to go to.

Great Happy Hour

By jess_a_ro |

Happy hour veggie nachos can be a full meal for someone looking for a quick, inexpensive dinner before 6:00 pm. Small draft beer selection, but $4.00 price counters that issue.

Great Mexican food!

By Simon T |

Wanted a change from pizza and burgers. Found this restaurant but couldn’t book.Had to wait 40 minutes for a table but that seemed usual for SF at 6pm or after. Wasn’t a problem as we gave them a mobile number and we went to do some shopping in the mall nearby. Table was ready when they said and we had a very tasty tex-mex meal. Had complimentary nachos and dip so no starter needed. Price about what you oulton expect for a central city location. Atmosphere very good too.Lively bar area with good music.

Really good food, good atmosphere

By clh622 |

I had a late meal here on a Thursday evening and the place was packed. Seemed like a popular place with a lot of regulars and tourists. I didn’t sample the adult beverages but judging from the crowd, they were satisfactory. The chicken enchiladas & street tacos were great; the tortilla chips were awesome!

Nothing Special

By MUFarm |

Not bad, but nothing special. Pros Three salsas offered with free chips Decent prices Good location near Union Sq. Cons Average Mexican food Hit-miss service: waiter disappeared for large chunks of time Two single uni bathrooms In general, nothing terrible, but not worth a return trip.

Fresh flavors at Tropisueño

By mcgowan06 |

Four of us dined recently at Tropisueño in San Francisco, and we had a great meal. Standouts for us included the salsa that came with the complimentary chips, the fresh guacamole, and the enchiladas de nopales. The ingredients were fresh, and expertly prepared. The restaurant was packed and quite loud, and service was solid (though not spectacular). Tropisueño is worth the visit for the salsa alone, but all of the entrees we ordered were delicious. We will certainly return.

Delicious, Authentic, Fast

By Sandra R |

A group of 6 of us arrived on a Monday night without a reservation and lucked out with a large table. Service was fast, even while very crowded. Chips and salsa was delicious and tasted made -from-scratch. Entrees arrived extremely fast and were very delicious. I had the 3 tacos combination plate of steak, carnitas, and al pastor with rice and refried beans. I found it very authentic and delicious. I got the drink special and personally didn't care for it but 2 others enjoyed it. Definitely recommend if you're in the area and want a good Mexican meal. The environment is classy and elegant but not too formal either. Outdoor seating is available.

Delicious meal

By kmcconville |

We 'fell' into this one after a few days ambling about San Fran. I was hoping for the fajitas but although on the menu they weren't 'on' tonight. That aside we were not disappointed. Authentic atmosphere in a relaxed environment with great service and other food choices did not leave us disappointed.

Good service, bad execution...

By Randy L |

I ordered the pork chop and it was very tough and dry. I mentioned it to the server and he asked if I wanted redone and I said yes. Came back exactly the same. I ate a couple of bites and that was enough. Sad experience.

Great Mexican food

By HappyTraveler1957 |

Had dinner here during a recent stay at the Marriott Marquis, located next to this restaurant. Great food. We had the trout, which was superb, along with some house made sangria. Lively atmosphere, friendly service.

Very High Noise, Good Food

By hphphd |

The noise level at 8 PM dinner measured 85 - 90 dB on my iPhone meter, much too loud for my wife. We should have moved outside to the patio where it was quieter. This spoiled an otherwise good dining experience. The trio of ceviche was very good, though we liked the salmon one least. Guacamole was just average. Caldo de mariscos, like a cioppino, was excellent, slightly spicy with lots of fish. Chicken mole poblano was also very good.

Excellent fish tacos and salad

By stormville |

Really great fish tacos and salad. The atmosphere was pleasant. I visited during the day so you ordered at a counter, then they brought your food.

busy, fun place

By Rory I |

Busy on the weekends, but they have a salsa and chip combo, three salsas. Pair that with a great caddy marg and your wait time goes by fast. Combo items platters or the steak dishes are all great, service was great too with plenty of drinks on hand.

So good

By Lars |

I went there during my holidays. I tried so many Mexican restaurants but this one has been the best. I really enjoyed the dinner. Everything was so good. Cocktails, appetizers and main dishes of course. Not so expensive. Can’t miss it!

Nice Mexican Restaurant

By Dan S |

Nice Mexican restaurant. Staff were very friendly Food was good. I had the Chicken Enchiladas. Portions are a decent size Cocktails good. Strong mind you.

Fast good food with amazing chips

By AnnArborMichigan |

I had lunch here two days in a row during a recent trip to SF because I liked it so much and it was the fastest, high value food option in the area. When I ate in, nothing came with my pork burrito, but when I got my chicken burrito to go, it came with a large amount of fresh, thin corn chips that were absolutely delicious. I could not finish the chips and felt sad to throw any out because they were so good. Be sure to ask for cilantro if you like it; adding it made my burrito extra good. Service is abrupt perhaps because the place is so busy. You place your order in line like a Subway, and can see them assembling your food. You then stand awkwardly trying to avoid getting in the way of the servers until they bring your carry-out order. I would eat here again.

Excellent!

By Pam B |

We were in town for a conference and wandered over from the conference center. Great food, excellent drinks, fabulous service. All we could have been looking for!

Food is ok

By Simon |

Good ambience and willing service (even if they did seem to struggle at busy times). Very helpful with our gluten and dairy free requirements

Went for lunch during a busy

By jeissler |

Went for lunch during a busy Thursday. The food was prepared quickly and with some care. Our party got 2 different burritos and 2 different tacos. The tacos al pastor and barbacoa were delicious. I would definitely go back again.

Very good “higher end” Mexican restaurant

By Drawring_Simon |

When I say higher end, it’s just not a cheap eats kind of place. It has a higher end ambiance, prices, location, and good food. It’s still casual enoughwith proper Mexican bar drinks. If you’re in the area, it’s a nice place to have lunch or dinner. I default to it when I can’t think of another place to eat nearby (Metreon/Market area).

Nice Place

By NMIMarshall |

Food was excellent. My wife had the Pollo Asado which she absolutely loved. I had the 3 combo Enchilada which was pretty good. Portions were decent and the prices were very good, except the beer prices were a little high. We will definitely be back when we are in San Francisco.

Nice find

By eke-ono |

We were in the mood for some Mexican food and Tropisueno was close by. It was the happy hour so we ordered off their happy hour menu. Fernando was our waiter and he made some excellent suggestions. We had the ceviche and the flautas. Both were very good. The dinner menu opened up at 5 so we ordered dinner. We had the camarones al mojo de ajo and tampiqueno, again both very good. Throw in a couple of margaritas, a really good meal. Just a note the guacamole is pretty weak> Thanks again Fernando

Mediocre

By Scott |

This restaurant gets a solid 3 star review. A carne asada tacos were good, but not great. The beef is soaking in a vat of oil. The flavor was tasty, but I do not like a pure oil texture. Chips and salsa were very tasty, although the salsa bar was a bit of a mess. The dining room is reasonably clean and comfortable. They need to put a little bit more effort into the bathroom. Check out the photo I posted of the bathroom door. at a restaurant located in such a premier spot, there is no reason why the bathroom door should look like something from a 1930s train station. It's filthy in the paint is coming off.

A very pleasant surprise

By gibson737 |

This was a very pleasant surprise. I had a hankering for a Mexican meal and the tanqueria style lunch at Tropisueno fit the bill. Food was tasty, prepared promptly all at a very affordable price. The lunch rush was very busy so finding a place to sit took a little effort, but people cleared out quickly so it was onerous.

Food is average to good

By Cecilia M |

This is a regular, average Mexican food restaurant just outside of the Marriott Marquis Hotel. The service was a little on the slow side; looked like they needed more wait staff. They got a couple of drinks wrong but were quick to correct the issue. Don't know if the air conditioning wasn't working the night we were there, but it was uncomfortably warm inside. The food, however, was good and lots of it!

Food was ok, service rude

By michal t |

We went with friends for an evening dinner. Ordered significant amount of food and cocktails. Decided to have one more round of drinks before leaving. Clearly communicated this to waiter who brought promptly bill. One of our friends that speak spanish heard waiters talking to each other that some people waiting for our table. Not nice. Food it self was ok, nothing special.

fish taco was average

By vdsl90 |

popular restaurant. long lineup to place order. limited tables. outdoor seating available for good weather. i ordered fish taco and was disappointed. fish was tasteless.

Take the time and enjoy

By Heidi B |

I was here a couple of years ago and loved it.. not only me but all of downtown SF. The wait is very reasonable. I just went back with my 16 year old son because we were in the neighborhood and I wanted him to enjoy the flavors...still am amazed at the whole atmosphere. Food is delicious and margaritas (on the rocks no salt) are amazing. Do not think you will be in and out in 5 minutes. Take your time and enjoy... my son sure did.

Terrible and rude

By Neeraj |

Terrible service. Manager (Jose) kicked us out of the non-community area saying we wouldn't get service otherwise. We had a few bags but he was stubborn and extremely rude.

Disappointing

By vanessaiuv |

My husband and I visited for dinner after being recommended by our hotel. We were both disappointed, not only by the food, but also the service. The server didn't come across confident at all. We ordered two Antojitos and only one came to the table. After bringing our Entrees order, she never came back to the table to check on us. We had to try a few times to get the attention of the other waiters to get some service which was quite disappointing. The food was over salted and the rice so dry it was horrible. The only reason why I gave two stars was because of the chips and salsa.

Excellent Dinner and Drinks - Great Vegetarian Options

By Krishna M |

Loved the food and the excellent service provided. The food selections were great, quantify sufficient and taste exceptional. We went late in the evening, after 9PM on a saturday, so had minimum wait. Started with a great set of 3 salsas with chips. ried spicy mango margarita -- spicy and great. The rest of the food - soup, salad, Tamales and enchiladas were also tasty. Felt full, in a good sort of way, at the end of the dinner. Service was extraordinary. Water glasses were kept always filled. We wanted to split the soup and the waitress brought us a separate bowl with serving ladle to pout the soup----small acts that contributed to a wonderful dining experience.

Good food and Not Very Happy "happy hour"

By Stroll2Eat |

Food is good....... not great. The bartender doesn't know that he should add some alcohol in high priced cocktails.. Mostly it's ice and mix with very little alcohol. Very disappointed on cocktails.

Nice little place for dinner

By Dave |

After a day of travel, we were looking for a place for a small bite to eat. We found it, the choice was good. I had the two taco plate with black beans and rice. Tacos were great, with flour tortillas. Coupled with a Dos X’s Amber, made for a good dinner. I would highly recommend this place!!

Popular quick service restaurant

By minnesotans4 |

Around noon this place is always popular with the lunch crowd. A person orders at the counter and then pays. You will receive a number and food will be delivered to your table. Alcoholic beverages are ordered at the bar. Head to the salsa bar with salsa ranging from very mild to very hot. My husband always likes their chili relleno. My steak/cheese quesadilla with a side of guacamole was excellent. It was loaded with steak. There were complimentary chips. Tables are very close together. There are tables outside which helps ease the congestion. Prices were reasonable.

Wrapped mush

By sfsurfcaster |

Mediocre maybe at best and the draft beer selection at the bar was awful. Uninspiring burrito. The saving grace for this place is probably the location.

Love me some Tacos

By Timothy M |

Craving tacos in downtown San Francisco?? Check out my go to place for quick tacos and chips!! Decent prices and right by Market St.

Great Happy Hour Deals

By tanilong |

When you see the sign "Tacos Margaritas Run..Don't Walk" -you should follow the directions. I was a single, so I pulled up a seat at the busy bar. I ordered a house margarita and had the quesadilla suiza. Both for $15! Excellent stop for a quick meal.

Edible shoes ?

By Donald P |

Ate here twice during our week in San Francisco. First time inside but very noisy and crowded. If it's not too cold eat outside in the garden of succulents. I had huaraches with three types of pork. Excellent. My guest had morriscos. I had black beans. He had refried beans. Try to eat family style. Have a Bohemia beer. Very friendly and efficient service. Couldn't be more convenient to Yerba Buena Center, SFMoMA, etc.

Excellent food!

By Shawn H |

Took us awhile to find this hidden little gem but when we did it was well worth it. Amazing service and fantastic food... Would recommend this to anyone

Great lunch

By Danielle G |

Ordered a super carne asada taco and cheese enchilada. Taco, while not the best I’ve had, didn’t disappoint. The enchilada sauce was nice and light, but the cheese inside was a bit dense. Could see ordering with a meat or beans. Guacamole had too much cilantro for my taste. Pineapple juice was good; not too sweet. Overall great choice, especially for the order and sit lunch. (They’re full service for dinner).

Good value

By J05186 |

I came here for lunch due to the positive reviews. The line was quite long. At lunchtime you order, take a number, and then wait for the food to be called out or delivered. The lunch menu is more limited than the dinner offerings. I got the shrimp with beans, rice, salad and tortillas. The shrimp and rice were very tasty, the beans could have used a little more flavoring, and the salad and tortillas were typical salads and tortillas. I wasn’t given any salsa with my to-go order and the aqua fresca made from hyacinth flowers had a lovely flavor, but was sweeter than it needed to be. It was a filling meal at a reasonable value, but the food didn’t strike me as amazing. I’d return for dinner since there are more choices available then.

Good, but not worth the money

By JuicyPeach123 |

While the restaurant itself had a nice bustling atmosphere and a cozy feel to it, it was very noisy. The menu, was very promising, but quite misleading and portion sizes were quite small, especially when considering prices. However, I was most disappointed with my cocktail, which was far too expensive and I basically just paid for ice! Keep in mind a sevice charge is paid within bill.

Fun bar, good mexican food

By Juliet F |

Enjoyed the ambiance of the bar in this restaurant near my hotel. The food was good, not amazing, but it was a fun bar at the end of a busy day. Overall, I would recommend.

Food was luke warm, disgusting and undercooked

By Jake |

We came here for a family meal, first of all we looked at the menu online, said it had burritos and fajitas... Got to the restaurant it didn’t have anything on there that we looked at! Once we ordered our food it took about five minutes to come and it wasn’t even hot so it was probably reheated. I had the enchiladas and i took a bite and gagged, how was i suppose to eat that! One of the worst meals i’ve had and my family did NOT enjoy it either. Do not recommend this place as the food is absolutely revolting! Not to our taste

Awesome place!

By coloradogal91 |

This is a great restaurant! You order at the counter then seat yourself. We ordered the chile rellano and the combination flauta/enchilada. We then ordered a margarita at the bar and had a seat. Our food was out in a reasonable amount of time and man it was good! Best chile rellano I have ever had and the mole sauce on the enchilada was wonderful!

Great place to eat with friends

By 9ja traveler |

Amazing, fresh food and good prices from this lovely Mexican restaurant. The staff eat the food too so you know it's just great!

Great food, very loud

By Tom C |

First off, I was impressed that on a Tuesday before 6pm, the restaurant was packed, with servers bustling to and fro, the controlled chaos of a well run establishment. I got one of the last open tables, and was greeted promptly with excellent, light tortilla chips and 3 sauces. One had an great smoky heat to it, one was dark and flavorful (mole?), the third green and tart. (As you can tell I’m not an aficionado of Mexican food). When the server returned with my drink and to take my order, my only complaint with the restaurant surfaced—it was astoundingly loud, with tables meer inches apart. Between the music and hard surfaces it was a little overwhelming. We had to shout to each other and I didn’t really understand his answer to my questions. Dinner arrived pretty quickly and was outstanding. Three different tacos with nice fluffy flavorful rice and perfect black beans. Each taco had a nice portion of meat, all tasty (I had carne asada, pollo, and carnitas). Highly recommended but if it’s busy, don’t expect to have a intimate conversation with anyone.

Great food in a part of town with so-so restaurants

By Nancy C |

My daughter and I ate here after a day of shopping on Union Square. Union Square has unique restaurants from seedy to nice. This was fun, lively and had good food. Great to know about!

So noisy!!

By Sazofduloc |

Like another reviewer said this is a noisy restaurant with tables quite close to one another so not romantic. The staff ok but busy so no time to explain things or care also no patients when we couldn't hear what he was saying because it was loud. The food was ok but bland and looked uninspiring. I gave it two stars as it was a bad price at $64 and we did have starters, mains and drinks. But we won't be back.

Good (not great) mexican food

By HeatherK75 |

Maybe I had high expectations when I came here. The food was good, some unique flavor combinations, and they serve you very fast, but our food was barely warm, and not amazing. I think it does get a lot of hype. The outside seating looked nice. I would have rather sat there, but it was too cold. I really didn't like the atmosphere inside... very dark, loud, and crowded. I had to use the flashlight on my phone to read the menu. All the tables were VERY close together. I was disappointed they didn't have Pina Coladas or many dessert options either.

Outdoor dining - seat yourself

By ChristineAsh |

Visited on a Saturday night in November. There was a wait for a table inside and nothing available at the bar, so we were able to self-seat at one of the outdoor tables. It took a bit for a server to come over, and service was generally slow throughout our meal. The salsas they bring out while you're waiting for your meal were really tasty. Their soups are a large enough portion to be a meal and then some. Camarones Tropisueno was delicious. Margarita was typical restaurant fare. All in all, one of our cheaper meals in San Fran.

Good and fast Mexican food near Moscone.

By Davigeta |

This is a "workaurant" you wait in line, order your food, and then get a table. The food comes to you table. The place was busy but service was quick. My burrito was very good! An excellent choice near the convention center.

Great Tacos & Dips

By Waynegreaves |

Generally, Mexican restaurants complimentary tacos & dips tend to be supplied with a bit of salsa or guacamole and end up been occasionally nibbled on while waiting for the starter / mains. At Tropisueno, we received 3 dips, which were really tasty. We ended up eating the bowl of Tacos well before our meal came. Our main course were nice (at the standard you would expect). The service was fine and overall would recommend the restaurant.

Quick and friendly

By rudithedog2016 |

We ate here for lunch today, had a torta with pork, sautéed veggies refried beans and plenty of chips and salsa. Qued up, ordered our food got a number and sat at the bar, ordered some drinks and got comfortable. The bar is lively some might say noisy but this is part of the charm. The bartender was friendly and talkative. The food was excellent very tasty accompanied with chips salsa and plenty of dips. Really enjoyed it and looking forward to going back

Blah! There’s GOT to be something better than this!

By Lisa L |

We should have left when they started with, “we can seat you but your table has a reservation in an hour and a half, so you have to be done by then.” Tables packed so tightly that you can barely slide your butt between tables. I know this because the other waiter for the table next to us continually had his butt over our food while he helped them. Salsa and a bowl of chips served quickly by someone other than our waiter. Water was not cold and no ice. Small glass and only refilled once by someone with a pitcher. Actually all the food was delivered by people other than our waiter. He was not to be seen again until the end. Ordered queso as appetizer. It’s GREEN with a lump of cream cheese in the middle. Spinach dip a more accurate description. Served cold enough it wasn’t completely melted and starting to thicken. Never given a second bowl of chips so most throw away. We ordered enchiladas and tostadas. Completely cold! The steak enchilada was exactly that, just steak. No veggies, seasonings, or cheese inside. The black beans had absolutely no seasoning on them. Waiter finally shows up for first time since he took our order. Had the nerve to joke “you don’t want anymore chips do you” as he was clearing at the end of our meal. Then he used MY napkin to wipe the table (even before we got the bill) Guess I was done with that. Dropped off bill and left us sit there until we finally got up and took it took it to the front ourselves. He showed up to take the signed charge receipt after. Hope he enjoyed that 0 tip! Awful food, terrible service, cramped, super loud. Typically price for SF

Fair enough the location, decor, the variety of tequilas and some of the dishes are good. However, for what they charge, there are plenty of better options in the city. Try Rosa Mexicana, for instance... pricey but sheer quality! I enjoy some music and a lively atmosphere but this place is incredibly loud. It's busy but the service is far too slow and inefficient, in that, one has to keep calling and reminding the staff to bring things. If you don't order drinks, then service is almost non-existent and they don't seem to want you there as that's obviously where they make the dineros. The prices are steep considering the portions are pretty small. Took a dish to go and even then they forgot to pack the tortillas!

Delicious Mexican food

By Amanda Van Zadel |

This nice restaurant was in a side street of our hotel. The atmosphere is cozy and the restaurant and terrace are full. I found the menu complicated as we have few truly Mexican restaurants here. Ultimately a delicious meal. It was a lot so unfortunately I didn't have room for dessert!

Great Lunches

By Frank Sories |

I've been to this restaurant several times. Everything is very fresh and tasty. I don't have much experience with the dinners, but I did enjoy those I've had. Lunch is fun; it's very popular, and the atmosphere is quite lively. In my opinion, the standout is the chile relleno. The cheese, pepper, outer coating, and sauce are all superb. I once had the chile relleno burrito and I was not at all impressed. Tacos are good; all the meats are excellent. I love the salsa bar; there is a great variety and some are truly outstanding. If you don't mind staying in line to order and pay (full service at dinner) and have your lunch brought to your table, you will definitely enjoy this conveniently located restaurant.

Good burritos

By Einar85 |

Plenty of options, and the burritos were good. Service wasn't working that well, when we got our food they told about the salsa bar, and that they would bring nachos, but they didn't arrive. Not a big problem since the burritos were really big.

A happenin' place in the Yerba Buena Mall

By JRrolls |

Before I forget, if you order nothing else be sure to get the plantains! Hands down, the best I've ever eaten, including in the Caribbean. This is a loud, fun, happy restaurant that is tucked in the mall. It's Mexicine cuisine with a sophisticated and creative touch. You'll dine with everyone from business people to locals to tourists. Chips come with a variety of tasty things to dip them in, Service is good. We were a group of 6 and our food and drinks were surprisingly fast for a busy weekend night. There is an outside patio as well as indoor seating. Fine for children but may not be many choices that aren't spicy.

I LOVE Mexican food...

By Da1964 |

...and this place does it well. Good Mexican is, like a lot of cuisines, about fresh ingredients and some creative twists on simple dishes. I had a ceviche here that was wonderful and "Huaraches" which was like an open faced taco for lack of a better description. Flavor, portion size, service and presentation were all beautiful. It helps that I was really hungry, but any way you slice it (pun intended) this was a great meal. Even on a very crowded (for a midweek) night, they were able to accomodate me immediately ( as I was willing to sit outside on a ~50 degree night). This place is located right next to the Marriott Marquis San Francisco, and so it is bound to be busy given the great, authentic flavor and its location next to a popular large hotel and the Moscone convnetion center across the street. Suffice it to say I will be back next time I travel to San Francisco. Have a margarita, or two, as they have some great twists on this prototypical cocktail.

Alright

By Michelle J |

The drinks are really good and worth getting but the tacos were mediocre. It’s an overpriced joint and I’d only go for the happy hour.

Good Mexican Food in SF

By cherrybelle77 |

Good food great margarita's but service was just OK. I did 100% appreciate that they held our reservation even though we got lost and were about 30 mins late for our original reservation time. I will remember this place next time I'm looking for someplace good to eat out in SF.

Delicious food and aguas frescas

By marcridesbikes |

Got to enjoy their lunch and it hit the spot after a busy day of walking around the city. For lunch hours, a little more casual and you order at the counter and pick a table. Servers bring your chips and salsa. The tacos were tasty, and simple, just right. Nothing special, but had a lot of flavor. Good selection of salsas to choose from and their jamaica aqua fresca was very refreshing.

Average Mexican, but Great Atmosphere

By Dipesh P |

Tropisueno, is a great little Mexican restaurant with a great location in San Francisco. We did have to wait a short while for a table, but once we were seated, we great service from our waiter. He took the time to explain the menu and take us through our options. The free nachos and dips are great to whet the appetite. We both had fajitas which were average flavour but good portions. Coming from the UK, it was similar to the Mexican chains you see. The atmosphere was great, it was busy but not so much that you couldn't hear the person sat opposite to you. Oh and the tequila here is fantastic. Don't know if I'd visit again, but if you're looking for somewhere with a great atmosphere, it's definitely somewhere that I can recommend.

Hidden Gem

By sxtt38a |

Didn’t feel like eating at hotel, so went out the back doorway and found this place. It was a bit too loud for me but quieted down after noisy patrons left. The margueritas were good, but not frozen. The food was pricy, but found enchiladas that were reasonable.

Good overall

By KaladinT |

The food was very nice, the Chile con Queso and Chicken Adobo, even if the bones in the latter made it a little harder to eat than would be ideal. However the flavours were very good and the portions generous. The chips and dip brought out at the start was a nice touch, and the Margaritas tasted good. Service was okay but it felt rather rushed, especially when my server said “I’ll bring you the bill” as soon as I finished eating, without asking if I wanted anything else.

Great Chicken Burrito

By Mac D |

Had a great chicken burrito. Very good location if you are at a conference at the Moscone Center. Service was fast. Order at the counter mostly.

Great food...skip the margaritas

By Bird |

Delicious food in a vibrant environment. Crowded and busy at lunch but worth the hassle. Reserve a table before you order. Try everything it is great. Bar service was fast but the margaritas were watered down. A waste of money.

Awesome!

By SummerGirl2015 |

Loved the flavors and freshness of this restaurant. I also appreciated the quick service for lunch. The staff were very helpful and friendly.

Poor service

By Alicia W |

Too bad that the service was poor- because the food was tasty! Ordered tacos and really enjoyed the guacamole (just the right amount of spice). It seemed like the staff was put out by having to help customers. Looks like the manager needs to reset. I can not recommend:(

Yummy Mexican!

By Nicole B |

We visited as a group, and the service, food and drinks were all top notch. We got chips and guac to start, which were delicious, and also margaritas, which were really good. I had two carne asada tacos, which came with rice and beans. All were delicious. And they gave dum dums instead of mints! A win in my book!

Good Mexican food

By Maricar B |

The food was just ok. The ambience and location was good. I had carnitas tacos and Gloria sour as drink which were good. My husband had their chicken in tomato broth soup which was good. The serving was huge. Overall it was a good place, worth visiting in SF.

Great Mexican food at reasonable prices...

By Jemlnlx |

I was staying at the Marriott Marquis and was looking for a place to eat for dinner. I noticed that this Mexican place had some great reviews. It is located on Yerba Buena street on the rear side of the hotel, which was very convenient. I got there at about 9:15 PM on a Tuesday night. (They close at 10 PM). There are lots of tables there but I chose to sit at the bar instead of being "seated". The bartenders there were very nice and helpful. There was also a ?manager? walking around and asking the customers how everything is going, which was nice to see. I ordered three pastor tacos (about $17) which come with rice and beans. I ordered a Modelo Negro which they had on draft (about $7). The food came out fairly quickly in about 10-15 minutes. The food was really good. I am a fan of Mexican food and this place was very good. I was in and out of there in about 30 minutes which is always a plus. The setting is nice in the evening and I can see a group of co-workers going there for drinks after a busy day. I would definitely return there when I am in the area again.

I come here each time I’m in the city

By SkiKeystone |

Love this place. I highly recommend the queso, tacos and margaritas. The guacamole isn’t that mind blowing but everything else is fantastic. Been here multiple times - service and food definitely consistent.

Not good

By jjm61879 |

Went to dinner, long wait..came to find out after waiting 45 mins that the outside seating is open and if there is a table available you can just sit down. When mentioning it to the hostess with whom we checked in with, there was no remorse or apology offered. So needless to say we sat ourselves, but once seated our server came over and hurried us through our order. Food came out and it was just ok..kinda generic. The quality was not great but by this time we were very hungry and just ate it. I gave the server my card then he came back with the folder sans check, I asked him what it was for and he rudely stated I need your card. After explaining he already had it, he eventually came back. We signed and left. Wouldn't tell anyone I know to dine here based purely on the service alone.

Great mole and nice variety of margaritas

By Julia V |

Honestly, I almost left when I got there about 10 after 6 and saw I had just missed happy hour and that there were only empty tables on the patio but I was not able to sit outside but I'm glad I stayed. The trio of salsas served with the chips was a nice change from the ordinary and I REALLY enjoyed the mole; the flavors were fantastic and the meat tender. I tried two different drinks, the Santo and Paloma, and was really pleased with both; they didn't taste like syrup or mix at all. I would go back but would make a point to either have a reservation so I could sit outside or get there in time for happy hour.

Flavorful food and excellent service

By Srini-AZ |

My friend and I are vegetarians and we thoroughly enjoyed the food and the service. The chips are some of the thinnest and the crunchiest I have eaten. Of the three salsas they gave, one was creamy in texture, but had fiery heat! The other two were very tangy and had some heat. When we asked for some more of the hot, creamy salsa, we got three servings of it and we managed to almost finish it off! We had fried sweet plantains that had the right level of sweetness, and were crisp and chewy. The black beans that came with it was good, but not remarkable. I had the creamy corn enchilada with the cactus that was really good. It was served with the Mexican rice that was really flavorful and the black beans. My friend had the chile relleno that he really enjoyed it.

Highly overrated

By archimedesuk2016 |

Just visited here for dinner. The place was totally overcrowded and very noisy with no ambience. When the food arrived the items were so salty that they were hardly edible. Really unhealthy and unappetising! I really can not recommend this place and prices are high. Never again

Great Mexican food

By Rory S |

Great Mexican food. Busy. Definitely need a reservation if going during standard dinner hours. No kids menu but there are some small plates that can work for children. Unique dishes. Really good food.

Nice mexican food

By Ale W |

Easy place, many tables and fast service. A good option in city center with limited time.Dishs size is ok. Taste is good.

Let’s got for Mexican food!!

By opaguioth |

Restaurant is very popular, so is busy all the time, you have two options wait for a table or seat at the bar, on the bar is first come first serve. Food is good but the service is excellent this time the server was Fernando!.

Great food and great staff

By tita t |

Staff very nice and delicious food There is a good option of a plate wheee you can select and combine two items for tasting Very good music as well!

Decent

By Connor L |

Decent Mexican food. Place seems a but overrated. The chips and salsa were good. The enchiladas were decent although very under-filled. Mostly just soggy corn tortillas. The rice was awful - inedible.

Good food all the time!

By DianeF176 |

I've been here with a group and by myself, the food is good all the time, and the staff is very friendly. They don't have reservations, and won't reserve a table for a group, so if you come with a group, have someone come early to save some tables. As long as you aren't saving those tables for a long time, they're ok w/that, groups are there quite often, especially over the holidays. There's usually a long line curing lunch time, you order your food, they give you a number then find a table. Your food will be brought to you. They also offer outdoor seating; lights when it's dark.

Mexican Mush

By Crossruff |

I was almost converted to Mexican food after s very pleasant steak Quaesidilla. After this MUSH I'm back to hate again. The restaurant was plastic everything. Food was like a brick. Cheese meat and taco solid inedible. Avoid!!!!

Food small, too salty and very average.

By GJ730 |

Initial impressions were good. Nice looking restaurant. Service was good. Main issue was with the food. Firstly everything was way too salty. Fish tacos just tasted odd. Small portions despite what menu says. Cooked have cooked better myself.

Thank you; great eats!!!

By Corey V |

Started with chips n a dip plate, drinks and then had the trio of ceviche! Great service, great food and cool atmosphere. All 4 of us were happy; not bad price either!! Would totally go again!! Paul, the security guard from Marriott next door suggested going here-thanked him the next day too; great setup!!

FAB FAST LUNCH

By Carolyn C |

Tropisueño feels like a premium Shake Shack of Mexican food with the extra benefit of margaritas. You stand in line to place your order from an extensive menus including taco truck style tacos and can take it to go or take a number and your order will be brought to your table in their large colorful dining room. Order cocktails separately at the bar which features top shelf brands .The tacos and enchiladas were delicious and the margarita was excellent. No wonder there’s a line out the door for lunch but it moves extremely fast. I was in and out in 30 minutes .

Yummy food & margaritas

By SydneySider1983 |

I really enjoyed my tacos and margaritas. Free chips and salsa was great with a side of guacamole. I’d definitely go back.

Great happy hour deals

By JB010 |

We went here for a snack and drink during happy hour and ended up cancelling our dinner plans. The fish tacos were the best I've had and the quesadillas were good too. Service was great too.

Good Mexican Food, great value

By Vickie R |

This is tucked into an alley with a ton of other restaurants to choose from. Got seated right away. Solo diner again on this night. Greeted by a friendly waiter. Ordered a classic margarita, was great. Had the chips and salsa that is offered to each table. The trio of salsas were great and so were the chips, thin and salty. Had the Tampiqueño as my entree. Steak was cooked perfectly and enchilada was tasty as was the house made guac. Really reasonable, was under $40 with margarita and tip.

Outdoor Dining

By Hardrocker8888 |

This was my first outdoor dining in San Francisco since the pandemic began. The restaurant took many precautions to make me feel safe. The food was great. The staff was very friendly and helpful. It was a bit windy and chilly sitting outside. I just kept my jacket on.

Really disappointing Mexican

By Lucy W |

We were really looking forward to eating here, after not being able to get in on our first night, so thought with it being so popular, the food would be amazing. We couldn't have been more wrong. The initial hosting staff were "frosty" in their reception and told us to wait in the bar for our table but we were then told as we had 3 teens with us that we couldn't wait in the bar. Not a big deal but not a great start either. We were then given an initial bowl of tortillas with some bland dips and these were continually put in front of us throughout the evening. 1 bowl is enough. Our waiter was really polite and tried to be helpful but struggled to explain the menu to us at all and the differences between the dishes - couldnt explain the starters or the 2 types of Enchiladas which we were keen to know the difference between the two and we asked 3 people and still didnt get a straight answer. Thinking that Enchiladas was a safe bet, we went for the "Old School" option and it was so disappointing. It looked awful, sloppy enchiladas with a slop of black beans and tomato rice that was pretty solid. The chicken was not great and the vegetables over cooked. The service was so fast it felt like a fast food place. We all said how poor the food was and how you felt like you were "herded in and out". There must be much better options for Mexican food in San Francisco than this.

Worth the wait

By Ceri S |

We turned up on a Sunday night and had to wait 45 minutes for a table, the restaurant was so busy and had a great atmosphere. We had a drink at the bar whilst waiting, wonderful glass of Argentinian Chardonnay. I then had a violet margarita which was delicious. We order two sharing plates of tacos and enchiladas, chicken, veggie, meat - really good and they came with tasty beans and rice. They kept bringing freshly made nacho and dips which we kept eating and getting more. Staff very friendly and attentive. Couldn’t fault it and great value.

Baja Burrito, YUM!

By Olga P |

This place is really tasty fish burritos with a salsa bar! The margaritas aren't too bad either! It has indoor and outdoor sitting, a bar and friendly staff.

Yummy!

By StephanieLKing |

We went midweek and it was still fairly crowded. We were seated faster than expected. Enjoyed our tacos and enchiladas. Service was fast and attentive!

Undercooked meat and slow service

By Jae Soe |

I really wanted to like this place. It's right next to the Marriott where I was staying. It got such great reviews so my colleague and I decided to give it a try. I ordered the pollo asado chicken which is a quarter chicken with all the fixings. Although the flavor was amazing two bites into the dish and I realized the chicken was RAW! And I don't mean borderline not cooked I mean it was still pink and raw. I sent it back and they were great, gave me a new dish which was cooked and removed the dish from my dish. My colleague and I did return on another business trip to the area. We wanted to give it another try. I ordered the chicken again and it was delicious! However, my colleague ordered the steak Asado and it was RAW. Not rare, but cold, bloody, chewy red raw! They did take it back and cook it again, but two strikes and we won't be back. Really disappointing because the food was good. However, service was SLOW and the restaurant was dark and loud, so on top of the raw food, there are so many other places to visit we won't be back.

Great Atmosphere/Great Staff

By Adonai |

Went here for a girls night out.. what can I say the drinks were amazing, chips and salsa were delicious and warm light and crispy, we sat outside and had a great and attentive server. The food was outstanding and I def recommend checking this place out, I will be going again this week with my boo... because I need my Tropisueno fix..

Good food and fast service

By softwareparts |

We had tried to get in the night before but would have had to wait for over 30 mins so went early the next night and no problems. It's very popular!

WAS OK, reasonable place in good location

By Sherri F |

Noisy. 1 entree of 3 enchiladas w rice & Beans 1 margaritas, 1 draft corona, 1 dessert, chips and Guacamole $81 after tax and tip. Good service, but quite unremarkable food. FYI  NO coffee available at this restaurant

Great Food, Sneaky Bartender

By vaso815 |

My wife and I were on vacation, visiting our daughter, who lives in San Francisco. Since we were staying downtown, and our daughter works downtown, we found this restaurant had good reviews. So we decided to try it. It was going to be an hour wait for a table, and it wasn't warm enough to sit outside. So we decided to wait. My wife went to the bar and ordered 2 drinks. This was after being ignored for 10 minutes by the bartender. When she finally got her drinks (2), the cost was $26. Because of the poor service there, she tipped the bartender $2, and put it on a credit card. At that point, seats opened up at a community table in the bar area. We took the 3 seats and ordered our meals. The food was hot, fresh, and very good. Our server was very attentive to our needs, and because of him, we had a very pleasant dining experience. Around a month later, I get my credit card statement in the mail, and I compared my receipts with the statement. That bar bill that we had a receipt for $28 became a $31 charge on our statement. I tried calling Tropisueno, but the only means to contact them was through email. Evidently, the bartender somehow turned that $2 tip to a $5 tip. We did a dispute with the credit card company and got the $3 credited to our statement. I also emailed Tropisueno to describe what happened, and they never responded back to me. Hence, my review on TA.

Must go for authentic Mexican!!

By MOM282013 |

Hidden off the main path, we just so happen to find the only Mexican place we were searching high and low for! Chips n salsa for $2 is great!! 3 sauces and 2 were top notch! Burritos are huge! Yummmm!

Recommend The Carnitas Tacos!

By Xoel |

Tropisueño is a gem in the heart of San Francisco! I had the carnitas tacos, and they were absolutely amazing. The meat was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, complemented by fresh toppings and perfectly warm tortillas. The vibe here is lively and welcoming, and the staff is friendly and attentive. The menu offers a great variety, but the carnitas tacos alone are worth a visit. If you’re craving authentic Mexican food in a fun setting, Tropisueño is a must-visit!

Awful!

By Pippiduck |

I landed up going to Tropisueno on a Sunday afternoon, around 3:15 pm, out of desperation. I was starved and had a limited window in which to eat a fulfilling meal before some major activities scheduled in the evening. Tropisueno was the only restaurant in the Yerba Bueno corridor that was still serving food at that hour. Given that it received a high TripAdvisor rating, I thought it was a safe bet. Besides, I was starved and desperate. I do not know how this restaurant has received such high ratings. It is absolutely awful. It makes you hate Mexican food. I selected the chicken mole, with rice and beans. The only ingredient was salt. The portion was small (which was fortuitous as you didn't want to eat more than necessary). All I can say, is that I didn't get sick. But I regret that I just didn't forego a meal for a protein bar instead.

Outside seating available

By sfgranny |

Line moves quickly - order, then find a seat and a server delivers your meal. Lunch was ok, with decent guacamole, a tofu and red sauce with rice, beans and tortillas (for you vegetarians), salad options and standard burritos, tacos, etc.

Amazing meal!

By Redblu88 |

I honestly don't understand the reviews saying the food is average. I had without doubt one of the best meals of my life here. Place was packed when we arrived at 6pm, but sat at the bar for a few drinks to start, nice friendly barmen. Actually expected our meal to be a lot more expensive then it was. Came to $99 for 3 of us, 3 main meals, 2 appetizers and a round of cocktails. It was so good, we intended to go back for our second and final evening in San Fran, and would have done if it hadn't of been fully booked! I highly recommend the chicken mole with refried beans!

Great Burrito!

By JPMStanLAX |

I never knew there would be authentic mexican food in the city! I ordered the carne asada burrito and it was simply the best I had ever tried so far!

Good spot for lunch

By Gina M |

We arrived in sf hungry and wanted to find somewhere nearish to our hotel in the Union Square area. We were not disappointed with Tropisueno. At lunch, you wait in line and order/pay at a counter. It's a little hectic and overwhelming, particularly if you haven't been there before (you can't see the large menu on the wall until you're basically next in line). You get a number after paying and they bring the food out when it's ready. And if you want an alcoholic beverage, you have to pay for your food, then head to the bar to order/pay for beer or whatever. There are no servers at lunch (just food runners). We ate outside and other than the pigeons, it was great. Their salsa is DELICIOUS and the enchilada sauce on my enchiladas was really good.

Nice restaurant and kind people, food was ok.

By Gian S |

My experience is definitely positive for this place, great people, waiting time was ok, food was average but great chips and guacamole in a central location.

Tastey Mexican food

By Mansoor M |

We visited the place at dinner time, crowded as usual. They provides variety of Mexican food. Definitely i recommend to visit and try.

Early dinner after a movie

By CAROL S |

My husband and I went to see a movie at the Metreon and decided to walk to Tropisueño for an early dinner when the movie ended. This restaurant is always busy, with a lively bar and an outdoor seating area. Even though we had no reservation, and the place was full of people, they immediately sat us. They brought us chips and 3 delicious salsas (1 red, 1 green and one that was made with chile de árbol and was delicious. We also ordered two margaritas on the rocks, one watermelon and one mango. My husband ordered the tampiqueño and I ordered the pollo asado. Both came with our choice of beans and they Mexican rice - which was delicious. The service was excellent and the food very good. The dishes were large and full of food. We requested more of the salsa made with the chile de árbol and they happily obliged with a large amount for ya to eat with our main dishes. We opted out of dessert as we were so full. We very much enjoyed our marls and will return!

muy bueno Tropisueno!

By 000wanderer000 |

Tucked away in an alley of restaurants by the Jewish museum, Tropisueno delivers great food at a reasonable (for SF) price point. You go in, order at the counter, and the food gets delivered to your table. My favorite was the Tropisueno tortas, bursting with flavor. The salsa bar with like 12 different salsas was also a lot of fun for those who like to broaden their tastebuds. Note that the large sign on the restaurant says Mexican Kitchen. I walked by it twice before realizing that this was Tropisueno. And when the weather's good, there's great outdoor seating to people watch or enjoy the fresh air (just don't leave food unattended or else birds will descend!)

Delicious!

By KJSNZ |

We stopped in here for dinner on a recent visit to San Fran and we were very pleased we did! Although we had to wait for a table, the staff were very pleasant and efficient, and the food was really yum! Good flavour, good spices and a lovely atmosphere in the restaurant! If you're looking for Mexican in the SoMa area, pop in here for sure!

Fun Restaurant, Average Food

By Julie P |

Definitely a fun restaurant and really interesting decor to look at. The margaritas were really good. The food was just average though. It was definitely a loud bar and I came with a friend I wanted to catch up with, so that was a bit difficult to do.

Good Food, average service, cramped dining room

By sushi4soup |

The food was good -some unique dishes on the menu. The service was pretty dismal - maybe due to how busy they were? We told the waiter we needed a couple more minutes with the menu (he'd wanted to take our order as soon as we sat down). But then he disappeared for 20 minutes. Refills on water and chips never happened. The tables were so close together that we had trouble squeezing between them to get into our seats and it felt like the couple next to us was really wit hour group. I'd go back, but find a less crowded time?

Nice Mexican restaurant

By Lorenza R |

We were 3 and we arrived early in the evening on Friday without a reservation. We asked for a table and they quickly found one even if the restaurant was quite busy. The location and ambience were good, staff was kind and service efficient. We had 3 different options, meat, fish and a vegetarian one. Quantity was adequate and taste very good. A plus: definitely not expensive.

Not the best Mexican

By D P |

Very disappointed by the quality and standard off all the food that came out. Was expecting a lot more for a place in such a prime space, alas we were foiled. The place was busy but when I looked around the amount of food being left was quite horrendous. Must be because like us they found it quite uninspiring and very un-Mexican. The flavours were blah and nothing seemed super fresh. Mexican should be colourful and packed with flavours you can taste- this failed abysmally! However if you like corn chips - you’ll get bucket loads of them to fill you up!

Good Mexican American Food

By Georgesec |

I had dinner at Tropisueno while in San Francisco teaching. It was a nice spot with an interesting atmosphere. The food was well prepared, simple and flavorful. They featured three salsas with chips to start and all were flavorful, and the hottest was really delicious. The service was very prompt. It was a simple, relaxed and very nice dinner!

Good ambience

By Pin W |

The restaurant was very busy due to a food convention, but they kept the service up very well and the food was good. I had the Chily Verde with pork (the flavor of the meat was very good btw).

Great Mexican Food

By D_W_10017 |

When you enter, you need to order and pay at the counter, and the food is brought to your table soon thereafter. No reservations are taken at lunch. Burritos and tacos are great.

Great

By Corcy74 |

We have just returned from a 3 week vacation of the U.S ,, our best meal of the entire trip was here. Beautiful authentic Mexican food. We dined at a busy time so we’re happy to eat up at the bar. Staff were lovely & very accommodating. Reasonably priced. If you are a fan of Mexican Food then this is a must👌👌

A Mexican Gem in the Heart of San Francisco

By Feedbackmaster |

We never really though of going into this restaurant, but it was always busy. We finally decided to have dinner there and what a surprise. The food is delicious, the atmosphere alive and the drinks fantastic. The prices are reasonable and they have lots of gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian options. Make sure to reserve ahead, even a day ahead would be good as they fill up fast.

Surprisingly popular rubbish restaurant

By Tor_Malmros |

This is a Mexican restaurant that serves what it says is "authentic" Mexican food. So it does not have any burritos, fajitas or any of the good stuff we all like to eat. So we ordered some various stuff from the menu from the grumpy waiters and found that "authentic" is really rubbish. Having said that, we have been to plenty of restaurants in Mexico that are fantastic, so not sure what happened here.

If you want upscale Mexican food

By bfindysz |

Out in a Saturday night near Union Square we made reservations online. So techy and typical of the town these days. Very noisy and crowded inside but a nice night to eat outside. Limited menu. Good food. Draft Corona. Too few bathrooms but all unisex.

Good, really crowded, cramped

By WillGray77 |

Not very kid friendly... That being said, we had a good meal.. We visited SF for the weekend and wanted to try this place out. By 4pm, it was packed... We ordered some very good tacos.... The nachos were a mess.. not easy to eat.. the chips were thin and falling apart.. The Modelo was ice cold... Even though it was crowded, our server was nice and efficient.. Not sure if we would go back because the parking situation is very difficult...

Noisy, bustling and good food

By David F |

Busy place when I arrived at 7pm. Being on my own it was obvious from the guy managing front of house that I was not an ideal customer. Despite lots of empty tables, many for 2, I was directed to either sit at the bar or on the 'community' bench; both of which were full with no one seemingly ready to leave anytime soon. The many staff were completely indifferent to my predicament. After 20 minutes or so of watching couples without reservations being taken straight through to tables I pushed my point home to the FOH guy who begrudgingly lead me to a small table. My waitress, Liz, was more hospitable. The ensuing food was actually very good. The Tampiqueno was excellent, as was Salbutes con pollo. So just the poor initial service let my experience down.

Easy walk up

The tampiqueno plate of grilled carne asada and the tacos de cachette are so delicious. The service is spot on and the place is busy but they maintain a great atmosphere — festive, friendly, a feeling of intimacy.

Good Appetizers, average entrees

By Bensh |

The menu is not a typical Mexican food menu, some of the classics are missing. The appetizers are very good, I hoped the entrees will follow but was disappointing. Service was very good and quick.

If you want a quiet dinner, not the place for you

By Del B |

This establishment has a vibrant bar, stuffed with people enjoying themselves. As such, it is also very loud. If you are looking to have an intimate conversation, not for you. We did however enjoy the food and drinks very much. The frozen marguarita is frowned upon here. Enjoy yours shaken.

Crazy at Lunch, Great for Dinner

By JeniFord |

I usually eat here while visiting SF because my friend works close by and my office is not too far. Lunch is a little crazy but you'd never know it from the staff. They always have the best customer service and make sure there is a clean place for patrons to sit. It is kind of cafeteria style at lunch where you order at the counter, pay and then sit to eat. For dinner you can sit down and will be waited on. Either way, the food is good! The bar is always my favorite place to sit as the staff is personable and fun!

Eh, so-so

Stopped in for a quick bite. Walk up, order and they bring you the food. The person taking the order was not patient even though there was no one else in line. Asked what type of meat with the order and we initially said beef, but then asked options. She pointed to the steam tray and said "all these." We could not tell what most of them were, so she rattled them off so quickly I still don't know what was there. They had shredded beef and steak, so we said steak. She said "that's what put down." Sure enough, we got shredded beef, which was pretty bland. Other food was nothing to write home about. Had to buy drinks while in line and go back if we wanted more. No glasses of water at the table. Nothing stood out about this restaurant.

Huge portions

I really like the concept here, lots of dishes to choose from, order at the counter and pick a seat they'll bring you your food. I had a combo plate that was very good and portion was huge. Food was fresh and tasteful.

Authentic Mexican food!

Stumbled upon this place after a long day of walking around the city. The lunch line was long but the service is fast. Plenty of vegetarian options...don't forget to grab a cervesa before you head to the patio to enjoy all the delicious food!

Good but not Extraordinary

By NJB19641988 |

I dined by myself last night while out of town for a work meeting. Because I was alone and there were patrons waiting, the hostess tried to get me to sit at a crowded communal table watching the World Series. I just wanted some peace and quiet, so I decided to wait for a table. I was told it would be 20-30 minutes. Within 5 minutes, I was texted that my table was ready (very cool texting system). I ordered a margarita, had table chips and salsa, and ordered a 2 taco dinner. Aa a native Chicagoan, I thought the dinner was good, but nothing I couldn't have received in Chicago. The wait staff was very nice and attentive. I wasn't unhappy, but it wasn't "special". With tip, my dinner was $36.

Best Mexican food in San Fran

By paintbal137 |

Let's face it. You go to San Diego for Mexican food not San Francisco. And don't say to go to the Mission District. But Trooiseuno is the first one I've found that can compare to SD Mexican food. I he barbacoa burrito is the go to. Don't worry about the enchiladas. There are free chips and a salsa bar. Have only been for lunch which is a walk up ordering system. I have not been to dinner which I've heard is more sit down and order style

Okay food, good value for SF but nothing really really special

By Traveller0123456789 |

We took the tacos as starter, which was definitely the tastiest dish we tried. The ceviche unfortunately had more oignons than fish... The chicken as a main is good (and the portions are all huge!) but had nothing really special. The dessert (cake with cream and strawberries) however was really good! In sum, the food is okay but I was a bit disappointed.

Great place for a Mexican meal

Busy place with a nice feel. Food was good with lots of choice. Friendly Mexican waiters ready to make your dining experience something to remember. Off Market St. next to small Parc.

Ridiculous!

By foodlover |

I never give one star review, but this place deserve it. I will go through the night, we got sit, order drinks, drinks got delivered,we ordered food and two minutes later server drop a check. And we still didn't receive our food!! And when we Finnaly got our food order was wrong!! We been waiting 15 minutes to order out second drinks, and we could see our waiter talking with some women in a hallway of restoran, and our drink was at the bar waiting for somebody to drop on our table. Othere 15 minutes and we Finnaly got our drinks. Server never check how we like our food, so we couldn't mention that he mess up our order! We got upset with service, and everything so we ask for check. He brought check to the table next to us, and then he come back to slide there card, and us! Still nothing! After long wait we Finnaly got check. This is bad, bad, awful experience. And I am sorry about all guys who been working like a back waiter, bc front was teeeeeeerible ! Teeeeeeerible ! Never again!

Good but chilly

Not typical cal/mex food. Upscale and good variety. It was very busy so we sat outside. They could use a few more heaters.

Great food near Marriott Marquis

By uscfan1325 |

Enjoyed chilie con queso and very thin, crispy chips. The chicken cheese quesadilla was excellent as was the brisket taco. It is located beside the Marriott Marquis- we were there in one minute, tops!

Delicious food!

We had a great meal here - pollo mole and pork. All dishes looked and tasted delicious. They gave us free chips and dips when we arrived too which was a nice touch. Service was very good and the food came out quickly. Huge portions so we were both very full afterwards but it was all so tasty!
