Best Bloody Mary ever...

By Ktth83 |

I loved it in here, great atmosphere in this little bar in the Castro area. Friendly bartenders. I was served the best Bloody Mary(s) I've ever had- it may be the tomato vodka that enhanced them. It certainly wasn't the 2 naked old men outside. Well naked except for a bum bag, sorry Fanny pack! I sort of expected it of the area but didn't... We had a great time there though. I wish San Francisco wasn't a 12 hour flight away.

Great location for meeting people

By Stan1974 |

How I miss a bar like this in Zurich.... On every day- and nighttime yor are very welcomed from a really nice and friendly staff. It's very easy to get in touch with new people and you can meet all kind of people. And nobody cares about your age, gender, beauty, .... how lovely!

Friendly and relaxed place

Twin Peaks Tavern holds a special place in the history of the LGBT movement in San Francisco. Today it's a very friendly and relaxed place to grab a drink and meet some locals - in our case Disco, a very friendly dog.

Iconic...so had to do! Good experience

By Ellen C |

My husband and I went in for a couple of pints following a tour of the Castro District... And just as described, an iconic gay bar with lots of older gay men having a pint or two. Comfortable atmosphere, cold beer, fun place to watch the street traffic wondering by. No ladies room (at least that I saw).

Bathroom smells like cookies

By Tyson C |

This place is super cool. It was pride so it was super busy, but the bartenders were nice and quick. The place has a cool vibe and is decent prices. The best part is the bathroom smells like cookies because of the bakery next door.

A Castro institution - friendly and relaxed

By David_P_M1 |

Tomb with a view, the glass coffin, a couple of affectionate terms for Twin Peaks a bar on the corner of Market St and Castro. Great place to sit and meet friends or be on your own and people watch while you drink a Bloody Mary or G & T. Friendly bar staff inexpensive drinks. Always drop in here when visiting Castro. Most of the clientele are institutions them selves and will regale you with stories of Castro in the 70’s. Well worth a visit.

Can't beat the location

By Nick B |

A comfortable place to sit, have a drink, visit with friends, and enjoy to view of Sutro Tower and the bustle of Castro Street. A Castro district institution for good reason.

A historical gay bar

By Matt V |

this was the first gay bar in the US to put it's patrons on display. Before this place existed, all gay bars were kept underground and it's patrons hidden. Typically an 'older' mans bar, this place has great cocktails and the best smelling bathrooms ever, thanks to Hot Cookie next door! Their ovens vent in to the foyer where the bathrooms share a common window. Yum yum!

Triple GIn!

By milliesmum2016 |

I think I had the strongest gin ever in Twin Peaks a couple of weeks ago! Blimey! It's a wonder that I can even remember it. But I can and I forced it down manfully. The bar itself, where we dropped in for a pre dinner drink, was fun and friendly and welcomes dogs. The Christmas Nut Cracker decorations lining the back of the bar were fun. It's a bit like an old fashioned English local. Seemed to largely attract an older group of patrons. It was fun and I liked it there.

great historic bar in the Castro

By Phillip R |

Really cool old style bar in the Castro. This was the first gay bar in San Francisco to have clear windows so people could see who was inside. Really friendly place and great place to unwind after sight seeing. attracts locals and tourists.

Friendly place to start the evening

By Scott J |

Was my first gay bar of San Fran and a very friendly and welcoming spot. Went with my sister and the barman was very helpful in advising where else in the Castro area would be good. Apparently this is a more 'beary' bar but it seemed quite mixed to me, mainly older.

Home sweet home

The heart of LGBT life in Castro. Gay or not, you're always welcome at Twin Peaks Tavern. Cool drinks & great people here!

Best bar in Castro

By Sarah Burns |

My brother and I decided on a pub crawl one Sunday afternoon and Twin Peaks was the first bar we started in. Older crowd but a fantastic atmosphere. Spotless clean and 2 great guys hosting. Highly recommended and wish we had have stayed there.

I love this place

By Max Lombardo BG-IT |

The centre of Castro, at the end of Street-line F which takes from Embarcadero up to this wonderful part of the city. Twin Peaks Tavern cannot pass unnoticed, with its huge windows at the corner of Castro St and Market St. The local inside is cozy and full of light. Great prices! Do not miss for whatever reason!!

No welcome on a Tuesday

By Andrew M |

Barman did not smile, say please or thank you & then asked for his tip before we had chance to decide how much was appropriate (nil to be sure). Good drinks if pricey

Relaxed Bar

By Paul OMahony |

Nice, relaxed bar in Castro. Generally gets an older gay crowd. Friendly staff and patrons alike! Great for people watching as well with big windows on to Castro street.

Lift life’s fog with their Irish coffee!

By Nibby66 |

A city tradition each time we visit for an excellent breakfast, an amazing Irish coffee and excellent service. You take in its history with its traditional Pub style decor and the location is perfect.

At the Grand Entrance

By Doug W |

Great location to start or end your visit to THE CASTRO. Lovely wood bar and great drinks.....but no food as I found out.

HORRIBLE MUSTACHE WAITER!!!

By Olivier MESSAS |

Atmosphere: nice. Service: very, very bad! The mustache waiter showed that you could be a little bit muscular and very stupid! He was more than unpleasant, horribly arrogant and very aggressive! The worst server in San Francisco!!!! Too bad for this bar that deserves better!

Glass of Wine Before the Movies

By Yog-Sothoth |

Comfortable place to have a glass of wine before taking in the show at the Castro Theater down the street. Reasonably quiet. Little balcony where you can take in the passing scene.

Friendly, neighborhood bar

By Joseph D C |

the patrons are mature, friendly and fun. The bartenders are attentive and serve good hearty drinks! Happy hour is especially good and congenial.

History made and still making Tavern

By Michael D |

Right of the corner with LOTS of windows NOW.... Back in the dark ages, the windows were covered over so that people could be anonymous. Now in the New Age, it is wide open. Come in and say hi to a historic place.

GREAT PLACE

By Jim K |

If you're looking for a no attitude bar where people are friendly and the drinks are great -- this is the place.

An Institution

By Thomas T |

One of the best bars in the Castro to relax and people watch from their giant windows along Castro street. This is a must when my friends are in town for Irish coffees. The clientele leans older and everyone is very welcoming.

People watching!

By lindarD4217TA |

On the Corner of 17th and Market, this fun local bar is great for a couple of drinks and people watching in The Castro.

Fun Historic bar

By kcbeefy |

Twin Peaks Tavern was very crowded with a mix of both young and old. It's located at the entrance to the Castro. The cocktails were very reasonable and generously poured..

Iconic "Watering Hole"

By JeanetteCool |

Twin Peaks Tavern is iconic and a fixture of the Castro for decades and decades. Always warm environment, big windows to people watch in the neighborhood --

A gay bar, NOT a queer bar (if ya know, ya know)

By Devin L |

- as in, maybe not the vibe for queers who aren’t white cis gay men…. Absolutely love the history of the bar and I think it’s such an incredible historic landmark that holds deep importance for our community - which is why my friends and I wanted to visit. However, from the moment the three of us (all queer women) walked in, the vibe was ICY. It’s like they forgot women can be gay too lol. The bartender was pretty unfriendly, which, after reading some reviews I’ve come to see probably was less about us than about his overall demeanor, but the clientele made it clear who the bar really caters to. Bar was pretty full when we showed up, and idk, maybe it looks vastly different at other times, but I kid you not when I say every single person in the bar was a white, likely cis or cis-passing man over the age of 50. And the stares we got from them as soon as we entered made it clear we were not welcome as part of the community. We took our drinks outside and left pretty quickly - a shame bc any gay bar truly honoring its history should be making itself clear as a welcome space for BIPOC queers, trans folks, lesbians & queer women, and the community as a whole.

A great place to have a drink and people watch

By 1zane1 |

I stopped in this bar on a couple different nights and enjoyed the friendly atmosphere. The bartenders were very welcoming and friendly. The clientele was mixed old and young and everywhere in between. There are great views of the very busy Castro and Market corner that alone provides entertainment.

Fun People Watching

By Brian S |

Local that loves this place. It's in the center of the Castro and great for people watching all the characters the Castro has to offer. Great views and easily accessible at the end of the street car line and above the MUNI station. Excellent service and the music isn't so loud that you can't hear your friends talking. Also doesn't have that pretentious usual gay bar vibe.

Central Castro bar

By James |

Sitting here now watching all the people. Nice bar, strong drinks, great for people watching in the heart on the Castro.

Friendly bunch!

By Vicky G |

Had a few drinks here the first night we arrived in San Fran and the bar staff were firnedly and so were the other customers. Everyone was buzzing for Pride weekend too so it was a great atmosphere.

Great bar in a great neighborhood

By bobby78751 |

I had a Scotch here after the Cruisin' the Castro Walking Tour. The bartender and his partner were adorably hilarious and the drink was delicious. Stop in and get a drink.

By chris s |

One of the oldest bars in San Francisco a must visit for any gay tourists, very friendly staff, prices ok.

Best Bar in Castro

By Dallas51 |

This is the best bar in Castro. It is on the corner with large windows and has been in the same location for over 50 years. Staff and clientele are all very friendly. Primarily an older crowd. My partner and I have been coming here for over 30 years every time we are in San Francisco and it never changes. Wonderful place to meet new friends. Definitely recommend.

Good Atmosphere

By PerthFrequent_Flyer |

Good location, good crowd and good atmosphere. They would have ranked higher if the drinks were better,

Famous Bar

By Thomas V |

The first gay bar in the Castro area that was open to the public, meaning the big picture windows allowed everyone to see it. No hiding allowed. Very friendly atmosphere, all are welcome. Good place for a cocktail, standing up.

Famous for the Windows

By Thomas V |

This might have been the first gay bar ever that has windows open to the world, So it's all here for everyone to see! Always a good place for a drink and all are welcome.

Classical Upscale Setting Famous for Irish Coffee

By Wayne G |

This is a favorite hangout at the corner of Castro and Market and 17th Street at Harvey Milk Square (and rainbow flag). It has glass windows that face toward Twin Peaks and allow people watching of the passersby. It is upscale, friendly and very unassuming. Its clientele is mostly above 40, but everyone is welcomed warmly by the bartenders and sometimes by hostesses or hosts. It is an enduring tribute to Castro Street and the District to have retained its position here as well as popularity. There's always someone interesting to talk with while enjoying well served drinks. Try the Irish Coffee - it's a classic.

Great vista and great company

By John M |

What a gem. The people were friendly and happy to share stories from the Castro - sad and funny. A must for anyone visiting this amazing and unique area. Can't wait to return!
