Spectacularly Expensive

By Dianablueskies |

Food was delicious but in my opinion overpriced for basically small plates. We enjoyed the experience but not sure I would go again when there are so many other Houston restaurants that offer similar cuisine.

Excellent! A good place to go with 2 or more people.

Best sushi dishes and cocktails. If you don’t mind the noise, a fun place. Good place to dine for 4-6 people.

Bartender of the Year Award

By Maggie Dandrea |

Well done, Uchi. Visiting from out of town I dined with a friend at the bar. We enjoyed a well- rounded sampling of the menu. The tongue, short ribs, atún/watermelon, king crab, all stand out for me now. Unbelievably lively flavors, I mean, just delightful dishes. Such pride and ease of service by Han, informative presentation with an effortlessly sexy vibe. This is the place. It is the kind of experience worth repeating.

Fantastic experience 👍🏻👍🏻

Fantastic experience of flavors .. excellent service. Good experience. So we got to tell and give the recipe of a good mix of gin and “Henriks” 👍🏻👍🏻

Best place to bring out of town visitors

By octoberitaly2 |

I love to bring my guest from out of town- they always love it and I have an excuse to splurge. I mention a few things I like to the wait staff and let them pick the rest. The description on the menu is not all that telling so I trust the wait staff. Every staff member is knowledgeable about the menu, and various staff members will deliver each dish . Really amazing food, just a great place. The splurge is just a little over what I would spend, not three or four days times what I would spend regularly.

Best restaurant in Texas

By Sacha A |

The best restaurant in Texas without any doubt!! The food was amazing and the service was outstanding. Worth the price and the try.

Most interesting and Inventive menu

By Ted77019 |

This is my 3rd time @ Uchi and I haven't paid the bill in any of my experiences. A 40th Birthday party was my latest visit. We had 24 of us in a private room and a fixed menu was presented. We began with yellowtail with oranges and finished with "Fried Chicken". I counted 9 or ten different small plates and they were all fantastic except for the Bonito. I am an Offshore fisherman and we only use Bonitos for bait for other fish as the meat is blood red. It tasted a bit "fishy" but I should have shunned it rather than try it as I have a built-in prejudice. Every other presentation was unique and wonderful. The wine selections were also very complimentary and there is no doubt that this place has the most unique dishes of this type of restaurant in Houston.

Overpriced and disappointing

By 997juneg |

My husband and I were underwhelmed by this place. The food was ok, but not exceptional and very expensive. I almost laughed when my husbands meager piece of sushi arrived. It was a tiny piece of salmon that was supposedly specially seasoned. Perhaps we just aren’t into fusion Japanese food, at least where sushi and sashimi is concerned. We also felt the service was a bit rushed. For a special place and high prices, we didn’t feel it merited such rave reviews. We’ll find another place next time.

past its apex...

By Helmut |

I have been to Uchi many times over the years. However, this will be the last. Prices are ridiculous and portion sizes accordingly small. Pair that with a sense of being rushes and, honestly, there are other places where you get better food and service for less. We had a pretty small (for my standards) meal last night with no alcohol. $100/head? No way. Not at a place that does not even come close to fine dining. Good bye Uchi.

Never disappoints

By traveler_stef |

My husband and I visited Uchi a few days ago after being gone from Houston for three months. Ordered our usual favorites, walu-walu, the two hamachis in the cold tastings, wagyu beef, rice bowl, and a couple of sushi rolls. Loved them all! Service was fast and attentive. We were pleased to be back and as usual Uchi did not disappoint us.

More Than Dining

By Rhonda M |

This was more like an experience with food, instead of dinner. Our waitress put together our courses and she nailed it! This restaurant is a MUST DO!

The food is great but the place not so good

By BiancaSR |

The place is so small that my table was touching someone else table almost as we were sitting together. I couldn’t talk to my husband. No privacy. Food is good but lack on ambience. When you go out for a nice dinner it’s not just about the food but the whole experience itself. I won’t go back there.

Authentic Japanese Restaurant

By SidMonge |

We spent 12 days in Japan a year ago and Uchi lets us relive our dining experience from that trip. Service is outstanding (they must have battalions of employees) and the food is varied and always uniquely tasty. A bonus is a separate vegan menu. Don't think of leaving without trying the "fried milk" dessert. It's "to die for!"

Amazing fresh taste!

By reesarei |

I first ate at Uchi for a friend's dinner birthday and I was really impressed with their menu and the wide selection of vegan and non-vegan items! The food names can be a little bit intimidating to read and decide, but the staff was so kind and helpful with food recommendations! We decided to do a menu tasting, and although the price was expensive (nearly $100 each person), it was worth the experience and the amazing fresh taste of everything in the menu!

Date night

By Richard C |

Excellent place for a date. Great food. Great service. Really nice staff. Took time to explain the menu and the different sushi. Always a challenge but well done on their part. Would go back for sure.

summer visit

By russ d |

Our visit to this restaurant was fantastic. The wait for a table was rather long, but the experience was well worth the wait. We sat in the outside garden area for cocktails while our table was prepared. We enjoyed the ten course meal that included a little bit of everything on the menu....the chef chose the food he sent for each course.... Even tho the place was packed, our food came right out. Wait staff was very knowledgeable and accommodating. This was an enjoyable culinary experience.

I WILL ALWAYS GO BACK!

By LAPRIEX |

Best sushi ever! i try to get a reservation but it was full and i had to wait until 9 pm to get a table it was worth it

Revommended

By kanabadoush |

Complex sushis with many layers of flavor. Expensive but the quality and originality of sushis, hot plates and desserts make up for it

Blood in my car--eww--barf!

By D G |

Went to Uchi on a Wednesday without a booking. Big mistake on my part. An hour wait. Ok, my bad. No problem. Went straight back to collect my car. Gave them a tip anyway. Not their fault...right? When I drove off i noticed a big smear of fresh blood on my armrest. Really gross. Put on rubber gloves and got a big pile of disinfectant to wipe the entire inside clean. Who knows what type of blood disorders they have. Use Uber or run the risk of something really bad. Have made an appointment with the disease control folks. Wish me luck.

Worth Every Penny

By Mikaela T |

This restaurant is amazing! The service was great and the food was unlike anything I've ever had before. Our server was Elise who was so nice and helpful but it was the team effort of everyone working that really made our experience one of a kind. Thank you for making my mom's birthday extra special and can't wait to visit the new location in Denver!

Amazing Experience

By Daniele Monte |

Dinner at Uchi is a transformative and unique omakase-style dinner that is hard to find anywhere else. The quality of all the products is impressive and everything is extremely fresh. The pairings of different flavors in all the nigiri are a must-try, and I recommend the 10-course tasting menu as it truly gives you the ability to experience a different style of cooking. It is an amazing experience that I recommend, however, I advise whoever goes to not come on an empty stomach as the tasting menu is not filling.

Bongo-Uchi

By Terrence K |

One of the very best sushi restaurants in Houston! Especially if you can get there for happy hour. Best unfiltered saki I’ve had, served in little square bamboo cups, interesting. Plan to arrive 20-30 minutes before they open at 5:00 to get in on the happy hour.

Dinner

By Hossein T |

This restaurant is located in Montrose neighborhood. It has a great variety of all kind of Japanese dishes including sushi and sashimi. The staff were extremely friendly. Our waitress was very knowledgeable and led the way serving in a nice pace. If you like authentic Japanese, this is the place to go. You need to reserve way in advance.

Amazing

By Allan M |

We visited Uchi twice on our trip to Houston. Our servers remembered us on the second night, sending over complimentary dishes as well as our already ample selections. Their treatment turned an already great experience into a memorable one. The food itself is top drawer (get the Brussels sprouts), and the restaurant is only a quick Uber from downtown. It gets very busy so be sure to book. A must visit.

BEWARE: servers give preferential treatment to certain people

By Tiffany B |

Very disappointing service at Uchi's. Took 30 minutes for the 8th course to come out. Usually I don't mind the wait especially if it's a busy Saturday night. But during the time we were waiting, the couple next to us had received 3 courses and an additional free dish "on the house". We had the same server by the way. Didn't understand why they received preferential treatment when we all paid for the same $200 meal. Was so excited to try this place out for our 3 year anniversary.... Never coming back here again.

Great Food and Great Service!!!

By David B |

First time dining at Uchi and I really do not eat sushi. We tried more than 12 different tastings...All we very well prepared and presented. The service was fantastic...they explained how to order, how the sushi is prepared and served. We were provided a semi private room, as we were celebrating a college graduation. Steven's service was exceptional!!! Uchi is a bit pricey...but well worth it!!!

Party in my mouth. We loved this place!

By Julie S |

Top notch experience! Sat at the bar and chef Kai took care of us. Our server was so helpful in helping us pick out sake. The dishes served were a work of art that makes your tastebuds explode.

Like having bar food!!

By JPDallas |

Tried to be fancy fusion Japnese cuisine, but poor execution, arrogant service and noisy & crowded dinning room with loud music. All dishes were small plates including the main dishes. We tried more than a dozen; they threw different Asian spices and flavors on each that they did not go well together. Fried items were dried (over fried) but also soft (sat too long). Sashimi was not top grade of fish. Half of a dozen of orders came at the same time, and then waited a long time for the next ones. Piped loud music throughout, so dinners had to shout at each other. Felt like eating mediocre bar food in a loud bar!! They wanted me to wait outside until my entire party was there to be seated. Awful!!

Excellent food and service.

By Jimmy V |

A friend from Los Angeles was visiting Houston on a business trip. She wanted to go to Uchi. I had never been before. It was smaller than I'd expected. It was crowded (but not in a bad way). Our waiter described our food perfectly. We ordered based on his recommendations. The food was amazing. It was very tasty and super fresh. The servings were small. There were 3 of us but the servings were so small that only 2 of us could share each entree. We got around that by ordering more food. I think that's how they get you. By the time the check came we had ordered over $300 worth of food and beverages. We only had one cocktail each. So the bottom line is it's very good, servings are very small, prices are high, ambiance is very nice and the overall experience is one that I can only afford maybe once a year.

Amazing! Everything was great!

By aer8301 |

This was our first visit. We ordered the Chefs Tasting 10 course. We loved this. We were able to taste so many different dishes!! The flavors and pairings were on point! The Edamame were different than normal and were fantastic! Sake and wine were great. They would really up their game if they added pretty drinks with liquor to the menu.... Other than that it't was top notch! We will definitely bet back! Can't wait

Top Contender for Best Sushi in HTX

By HoustonFoodAndWine |

My wife & I stopped in for Happy Hour (fka Social Hour) the other day and loved what we ate so much we ended up turning a simple affair into a self-initiated omakase. We were very pleased with the quality of the food, the food & beverage program, and the service; so much so that as soon as we left we immediately began plotting our next visit. For many years now I've hailed MF Sushi as the finest Houston has to offer when it comes to sushi, but after our prolonged visit to Uchi I'm seriously reconsidering. Alas, after we've visited Uchi a few more times I'll have a better grasp on whether or not I ought to bump MF Sushi to #2. For now I'll exhibit a measure of restraint and simply say that Uchi is a top contender for the best in town.

No reservations no problem

By jncl22 |

My sister and I decided to give Uchi a try after reading all the reviews. It was Friday night and we never thought we'd get in. No reservations available but they do take walk ins. We showed up and were seated right away at the sushi bar. Service was great. Food was fresh and amazing!! If you like brussel sprouts these are a MUST try. Ham and Eggs, gyumaki, zero sense are just a few rolls we tried. Everything was excellent. I found my new favorite sushi place.

Wow, just wow

By TravelBrianCO |

Almost impossible to get a reservation unless you are very flexible, but worth changing your schedule for. Super fresh, well prepared, and amazingly tasty. Been to several top sushi restaurants across the country and this is one of the best.

My Favorite Sushi Restaurant

By Nicole K |

Our work group was treated to a wonderful dinner at Uchi. It was by far an amazing experience from A-Z. From the moment we walked into the venue and until we left, we never had a want or need. The wait staff was very professional and attentive but not overbearing. As for the entrees, they were creative and delicious. For first timers, you can order different tastings which will give you an awesome variety. The wait staff will tell you about each of the items and how to properly consume them. I always look forward to visiting this venue. It is a bit pricey but well worth it.

Visit during Happy Hour!

By alfer05 |

I have visited Uchi twice in the past two months. It is not somewhere I would go for a casual sushi night; it IS somewhere I would go for a unique, special, fun dinner experience. I'm a big fan of the Uchi happy hour menu. Because the menu is fairly expensive, this is one way you can go for much less! However, I would show up at 5 PM sharp (earlier if on a Friday) to get a table. Otherwise, you need a reservation. I love sitting at the sushi bar. It is always lively, fun and informative. Your chances of getting something yummy and off menu are good! You cannot go wrong here but there are a couple must haves for me. I love the machi cure tasting. However, the absolute best bite on the menu is the gyuharu which is a 72 hour short rib. It is phenomenal, melts in your mouth. ! I am still thinking about it. :)

Average

By AUSAGUY007 |

For the amount of money did you spend on a sushi place this place is very expensive The service is good but the food quality I don't think is there They try to do these elaborate dishes but most of them don't have the freshness and flavor that other places do Sensors a lot of competition in the area for sushi bars there are other places that are half the price that have better-quality sushi

Interested but expensive

By AWilliams1978 |

We did the 10 course tasting menu for a group of 3. Food was really interesting, fresh, well presented and prepared but felt very expensive for the amount of food! Restaurant itself wasn’t anything special at all. Staff very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu.

Wonderful Fresh Sushi

By scorpio5 |

I love rolls, but this night I let my niece put our destiny in the hands of these fine chefs and servers at Uchi—game changer. Unreal experience. To be transparent, it was a house payment, but we all left satisfied and with my mind blown! Basically, we went with the chef’s recommendations. There were drinks, including Sake. Lots of Nigiri, which of course gets pricey because it is priced by the each. There were 4 of us. Honestly, I could recount this entire night, but the server did ask what we didn’t like, which they were attentive to. (Not much really) All the fish was uber fresh and delish, great sauces and unequalled presentations. Nicely paced service, don’t be in a hurry here. Atmosphere is kinda grotto-esque. But cool. I would highly recommend this for a special occasion!

So much fun and great food!

By jerray |

We are usually not "sushi" people. But this restaurant made it so much fun to try a little bit of everything! The waiter put you at ease by explaining how to order and what you might want to order. Then when your food arrives, the server explains exactly what you are now being served, which really help if you are a novice at Japanese food. Plus, its not like everything was sushi, there was all kinds of food to try!

Great FOOD....BUTT

By bryonp394 |

The tables so close together when a staff member waits on you their "back end" is and I mean is 3-4 inches hanging in and over your table. Kinda in ur face! So make sure you sit in a booth or pass as its NOT pleasant. Food was small portions but good. Food was very slow waited 1.30 minutes for a final dish all ordered at same time that told to us will be out shortly. Lobster expensive and less than a bite full portion. Yet good. they got a 3 as this is my lowest score ever and mostly due to seating and BUTT issues in our table space and waiting so long for order.

Best sushi in Houston

We arrived at Uchi on a Friday evening with no reservation. I have never felt so welcomed. The hostess bent over backwards to get us seated so we could make a concert close by. Our waiter was personable and made fantastic recommendations. Every bite was memorable.

Superb First Omakase Experience!

By hellojewel |

First Omakase experience! 🍣 It was our first time at Uchi Houston and we were very impressed! The flavors and details of every dish blew us away. The service was superb. It was also supposed to be a 10-course meal but our amazing sushi chef gifted us a couple of extras for my sister's birthday! 👌 What an experience!!! 😮 It was definitely our first time trying out every single food that was served us so we were drooling the whole time. 🤤 1. Hirame Usuzukuri - flounder w/ candied quinoa 2. Ajitama Tempura - soft boiled egg tempura 3. Scallop Aguachile - scallops w/ golden berry on chili bath 4. Madai Nigiri - japanese seabream 5. Kanpachi Nigiri - amberjack 6. Braised Rabbit - rabbit w/ black garlic and sumac roasted carrots 7. Uni Hokkaido - sea urchin 8. Zero Sen Roll - yellowtail w/ avocado 9. Gyutoro Nigiri - 72-hour short rib 10. Sakana Mushi - tom kha w/ sea bass 11. Maguro Goat - bigeye tuna w/ goat cheese and apples 12. Wagyu Tartare - purple potato chip topped with wagyu and egg yolk 13. Fried Milk - vanilla custard, salted fudge and toasted blondie 14. Apple Okashi - roasted oats with caramel mousse and apples Not in photos: 15. Wagyu hot rock - grade 9+ Australian wagyu sirloin HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! 😍

Incredible

I can't say enough good things about this place! If you don't have a reservation, try and go early around 5 and put your name in and they can generally work with you on a reservation time. The sushi was delicious, staff was super friendly! Enjoy!

Give this one a pass...

By KGN58 |

We stopped in without a reservation and were told the wait would be about half an hour. We sat on the patio where a very knowledgeble and pleasant young lady helped us with wine, cocktails and sake. After about an hour we were shown to our table. Having had such a great experience on the patio simply explaining taste preferences to our server, we explained to the waiter (i) we were eating family style, and (ii) we had no real preference except that the selections not include rice. The first dish was too small to share. The second was cooked fish - good but underwhelming given every other restaurant in this city serves cooked fish in some form or fashion. The third, fourth and fith were are rolls or sashimi, i.e. contained rice. When asked if we were satisfied, I reminded him (politely) we had specifically requested no rice. He then explained I was so casual about the request he was sure I would prefer the variety achieved by including the rice vs the six pieces of the same fish on the sashimi order. I would not be writing this, had he stopped right there and said, I am so sorry, what can I do to make this right. What he proceed to do was tell me in not so many words the order was not correct because (i) I was not sufficiently explicit and (ii) the Chef's were too strict in their service. In short, not his fault. He was insisitent that I should be satisfied with what I was served. Now to that... the fish was very fresh, but in many cases over salted. We re-ordered one dish only to have it taste completely different - and not in a good way - the second time around. There are lots of wonderful sushi restaurants in Houston that are more comfortable, less crowded, have better service and are less expensive. Drive past this one and dine at one of those.

Excellent

By BlackJack048 |

Top sushi place in Houston. The knowledge, expertise of the staff in Uchi is incredible. The food is spectacular. Sit at the sushi bar and let the fun begin. Just beware of the bill at the end. $$$$.

Respect your customers

By sanila s |

Had a reservation for 7 people with 2 small kids and they didn’t bother to seat us , hostess kept repeating some policy about a disclaimer for big groups . So we left. Am sure the food is amazing but if you can’t respect people who come to your place , I’m not spending money. It’s going to happen more and more - so clean up your act Uchi team. There are plenty of good restaurants in Houston with great service by teams who actually realize their salaries are paid by customers .

They make very good food, everything is wonderful and very tasty, especially the delicious desserts that really are a complete delicacy.

Fantastic food experience

By zumzumzum |

Every dish is perfectly balanced in taste and beautifully presented. The staff is very accomodating and patient with their guests. We tried almost all of their Happy Hour specials and even ordered some of them a second time before the meal was concluded. Visiting or living in Houston and not experiencing Uchi is a missed opportunity!

Fastest omakase ever

By Su25bag |

If you want a slow meal service the happy hour omakase for two is not for you. The 9 dishes came on top of each other with 3 at the table at once. If you are hungry, however, you will be elated. Everything was beautiful and delicious. Wham, bam, thank you ma’am.

Impressive Eat

By Khushboo_Golyan |

Reserve or wait, it's all worth the wait. This restaurant is always brimming and for the right reasons.Exemplary bar menu, ought to try their sake selection and get high on their mouth-watering sushi.Courteous service and a balanced ambiance.

favorite one in houston

By Dani M |

A friend recommended this restaurant, and I have to say I was pleased! All the waiters know every single dish and give excellent recomendations on what to eat. I do not remember the name but a fish with citrus sauce was spectacular! Also asked for the 4 best nigiris and my mind was blown away!

Great food, service and atmosphere

By Traveler mom |

A great place for a romantic couple dinner. Very cozy, friendly and lovely atmosphere. Service was great. Waiters and very friendly and professional. Food is excellent. 5 stars food quality! Keep a space for the dessert. It is really a must. Highly recommended.

Always a home run.........

By BushBunchTravels |

This place never disappoints!!! Everything from cocktails to food is outstanding and this time we were lucky enough to get a super cute waiter (eye candy never hurt anyone)! No, back to business! I love this place, the menu is sensational and out of this world creative and I absolutely love that no soy sauce and wasabi is needed for any of their dishes, they are just that good and can stand alone any day of the week!!!! If you haven’t been you are missing out!!

I'd give it a 5 but it's just so darn expensive.

By Allison R |

Love Uchi. It's always an adventure and the waitstaff is great to lead the tour. There's something for everyone whether you are a sushi fan or not. This is a special occasion place for our family as getting enough for this crew of four foodies takes a lot of courses. Tip -- their daily happy hour nibbles and wine suggestions are delicious and help ease the pain when the bill comes.

Delicious food and great service

By Peter C |

We went on the recommendation of a Houston local, and had a terrific meal. We did not have a reservation (a Monday night), and while the tables were all full and the restaurant was buzzing, we were immediately seated at the sushi bar, which was a fun and interesting place to sit. We ordered the chef's selection sashimi and nigiri, and then had broccoli katsu, chicken karaage and kombucha (Japanese pumpkin) tempura. That was plenty for two people. The sushi chef asked us what whether we had any likes or dislikes, and freshly prepared the sashimi and sushi in front of us. It was all delicious. The hot courses were also fantastic, particularly the broccoli katsu. We did not have any dessert, but the couple next to us at the sushi bar ordered two desserts and they looked amazing! We wish we'd left some room for dessert! We split a large bottle of Asahi beer, but there is an extensive wine and sake list, too. The service from the sushi chefs and waiters was kind and attentive. Uchi is a special occasion restaurant and priced accordingly, but we thought it was definitely worth it. When all the factors are taken into account, the attentiveness and kindness of the service and deliciousness of the food, we thought it was excellent value for money.

Mouth-Watering

By D S |

This is some of the best sushi I've ever had. Uchi rivals Nobu. The flavor pairings. The drink pairings. All perfect. Unique, savory, fresh, and somewhat surprising. Yes. The answer to Uchi is always yes! The staff was superb too! Sit anywhere, a table, the sushi bar, or even the wine bar. All are worth it!

Wonderful Japanese food and great service

By Ositojoe |

Frankly we were surprised to get very good Japanese food in Houston. The Restuarant was packed at 6:45P on a weekday. The servings are tapas style with 5 bites designed to give the eater a taste of their great food. Our server was courteous and fast. We tried a variety of items including bowls, rolls and wagyu. My $85 Japanese hot stone wagyu was only 5 small bites which I thought did not justify the price. That being said we had a great time dining at Uchi.

Lost a lot of charme since last time we visited

By Nic0Mari |

We visited Uchi 4 time since 2014 and usually we enjoy it (a lot!). This time we found out that a lot of things change out, and the “Uchi experience” in not anymore the wonderful experience we had previously: - service was really really slow - no suggestions or inspirations, we had to pick the plates - food was salty, corrected with heavy spices (which was clearly not in harmony with the plate) - cold plates (meat was cold) The fois-gras and Pork belly are amazing :-). Even the “cheese-cake” is good! Enjoy

Amazing experience

By David L |

I love sushi, and one of the aspects of this was that they had many different kinds of fish I had never tried before. Everything was delicious. I thought what was fun, is that the sushi was sometimes paired with flavors other than the usual soy sauce and wasabi. The service was great, there was always someone there filling glasses, taking empty plates away, etc. Everyone very friendly.

Amazing Food! Great service and with great vegetarian options. I would highly recommend this restaurant!

Lives up to its reputation as a very special restaurant

By Stephen C |

We dined here on New Year’s Eve as a special treat to celebrate the evening. The food is fantastic with terrific presentation, artistic and tasty. We had the chef’s tasting menu and were not disappointed. One of our party tends towards vegetarian and the server explained that they could accommodate that. We all agreed that the mushroom and the tomato dishes were some of the best in the dinner. I am not sure how many courses we had but we covered all the bases with some great sushi and decadent foie gras. It is a splendid modern style restaurant with valet parking across the street. Service was impeccable and we all left having had a thoroughly wonderful evening to finish 2021.

Excellent! Best In Houston!!

By Murphy0612 |

This place is tremendous. Amazing combinations of flavors. We opted for a waiter tasting menu where, after asking us a few questions about our likes and dislikes, our waiter served us with various dishes throughout the evening. Incredible. Couldn't have enjoyed our experience anymore than we did. The hype is real!

Lived up to the hype

By tomdB2732IJ |

We finally made it to the much hyped Uchi Japanese restaurant and were very pleased. The ambiance, service, food, and experience were top notch. We started by taking advantage of the tasty happy hour menu and then tried the chef signature and enjoyed the house recommendations. Can’t wait to go back.

Great Night!!!

By thom m |

My hosts took me to Uchi Restaurant on my recent trip to Houston, Texas. We have literally eaten around the world together and they really know how to pick them. But this time they outdid themselves or should I say Uchi Chefs outdid Themselves. We did it a bit different than most I suspect in that their favorite waitress was working the night we were there so... she was told to put together a constant barrage of delights that would flow the flavors and textures in a specific order. Doing dinner this way also allowed for the Chefs to be Creative and make pieces that were not even on the menu. I can't tell you what to order but I will say that after a sampling of perhaps 15 different imaginative portions we were ALL pleased and Full !!! I eat at many fine places but must admit that the last time I had Asia Pacific Fusion this good was when, Many, Many Moons ago Roy Yamaguchi had but one restaurant in Kahana, Maui, Hawaii, was the actual Chef, and would put together a similar feast for us personally!! I absolutely recommend this restaurant.

OMG THIS PLACE IS INCREDIBLE

By Ciara Castagno |

We have dined here numerous times. 1.Matt Taylor is amazing. Ask him about all thinks saki (he studied in Japan) 2. Eat everything and don’t be shy to ask. Staff is so knowledgeable 3. It will change your life type of sushi

Ausome Japanese Cuisine

By Becky Au |

Awesome Food Even if You Don't Eat Sushi!! I went there with my daughter & her fiance. I loved everything we ordered: My Favorite Gyutoro (72-hr short rib), Delicious Biendo (tempura shrimp spring roll), Flavorful Bok Choy, Wonderful Ham & Eggs (pork belly), Excellent Hamichi Nabe (yellowtail & koshihakari rice), Tasty Hana Tataki (roasted cauliflower), Marvelous Karaage (chicken) & Nice Shag (salmon tempura roll). For dessert we enjoyed Irresistible Fried Milk & Scrumptious Peanut Butter Mousse. I need to mention one issue I had for those that are handicapped like me. I arrived early and had to stand for 20 minutes until my reserved table we ready. I could not sit down anywhere while I waited. I could not sit outside while it was raining & the bar was full. Next time I have reservations, I will try not to show up to early.

Its Japanese fusion

By FoodnWineGuy |

This is not the place to go if you want "Sushi" The food has unique flavors and sometimes unique textures/items. Its presented very well, and creativity is what makes Uchi what it is. Its hard to get a reservation, however if you can make it for Happy Hour, it is much more affordable.

Always great!

By Lizardia |

We've had sushi here since they opened and it has never ever once not lived up to its reputation. The best freshest fish always. Try the salad. Yummmmy. Great sake choices. Great service no matter who. Go early to get a table. We show up when they open. 5pm. Valet parking. Happy hour is great.

I took three 17 years to Uchi after a concert at the Toyota Center. They were hungry and skeptical. They wanted to eat. Well Uchi delivered! The manager took such good care of us! To this day, the guys talk about how good the food was at Uchi!

Birthday

By cynthiacS393BO |

Went on my birthday and stood in line to be able to sit at the bar since I was by myself as friends were out of town. On a scale of 1 to 10, I will give customer service “15.” I wasn’t sure what to order and the gentleman behind the bar made aaaaaahhhhh suggestions that were beyond superb. This resturant’s food is tasty and superb in flavor. We Caribbean type love ❤️ 💕 good food with flavor. I’d go there every day. The saki was on point. My experience deserves 15 out of 10. If you haven’t been go today and return once a month 👌👍🏿😎.

Amazing Sushi

I have been a number of times and have never been disappointed! the food is excellent, the service is excellent and the spicy cocktail is excellent, the experience is like no other Sushi restaurant in Houston.

Omasaka Style!!

By Tina S |

We sat at the wine bar. The place was packed. For good reason. The food, service and atmosphere were incredible. There are many seat options available: inside, outside, sushi bar or wine bar. There was no wait at the wine bar so we accepted. Our servers were friendly and very attentive. They saw that we couldn't decide so they asked if we would be ok with them picking for us. Its called Omasaka style dining, and this was my first (and not last) experience. Omasaka style is when you let the chef know your allergies, likes and dislikes. From that, they creatively design a culinary experience for you! Ours ended up being 8 courses and to be honest, I was so full, I could barely eat the dessert! What impressed me the most was the layer of flavors in each bite and then every course was more delicious than the last. The flavors kept escalating! I could barely curb my enthusiasm! I was floored and taken away by all of the beauty of the presentations and the amazing food! If you're ever in Houston, you MUST come here and let the brilliant and talented chefs design a custom, culinary masterpiece for you! 100/100 would recommend!

Awesome chef's special

Went with a group and left it to the chef. It was a great assortment of the restaurant's specialties.

Just As Good As We Anticipated

By Rufus318 |

We love Hai Hospitality! Our first visit to Houston’s version did not disappoint. We were celebrating our daughter’s birthday and she had made a list of tastings that she wanted to order. Well, we only made it halfway before we felt like we could not enjoy anymore so we asked the restaurant if we could return the next evening in order to complete her list. They were all very gracious and made us another reservation for the next day, a Friday mind you, and at our very same spot with our wonderful Sushi chef at the sushi bar. Everyone that we encountered on these nights was genuine, considerate, and helpful. Our beverages were constantly replenished and the food was so fresh and delicious. We only wish that we could enjoy Uchi on a regular basis and not try to cram everything in at once. Lol...

This was a great happy hour in totally surprised by the quality and taste of the dishes we tried so many and were all very good Will go back there for sure sushi lovers i do recommend

Fantastic Service, Fantastic Food

By Lisa M |

I am in Houston on business and was invited to Uchi. What a delight! The menu is expansive, the food was perfectly prepared, and the service was spot on. Our waitress, Victoria, was quite helpful in assisting us with our selections, and she was quite patient in the face of our indecisiveness! All of the other servers were equally pleasant, which made our visit enjoyable. As for the food, I recommend the the wagyu tartare, machi cure, social short rib, and zero sen. I did not care for the hokkaido uchi, but that does not mean it wasn't prepared well. So glad we visited!

Best sushi in Houston

By M N |

We order Omakase here for $100 for 10 course. To be honest it was not worth the price. They bring out more half of the basic stuff like simple maki, some tuna fish that do not cost $10 each. Overall I do not recommend omakase here. My favorite thing was foie gras which is duck liver. It literally melt in my mouth. The flavor still lingers after you are done. BEST THING EVER. For dessert my favorite is Fried Milk. They froze the milk and then fry it. Served with ice cream. Very nice dessert to end

Try the Omakase (tasting menu)

By Chris White |

Great sushi with a casual / laid back ambiance and great service. i really enjoyed the saki cocktails.

Very interesting concept.

By Mueller1500 |

The food was defiantly memorable and the service was great. Be prepared to have a reservation weeks ahead and wait for a table still. Also prices are very steep, but you get what you pay for. He ambiance is loud and your seated very close to other people.

Nice Choice

By Amr E |

Chief selection is great , selection of different dishes to enjoy the night with great taste , the combination is the best ever ..great service with knowledgeable servers to the ingredients of their products, highly recommend to visit ..

Delicious- every bite

By Appreciative88 |

If you can overlook the hip and very loud young crowds of diners and just focus on the dishes served, this restaurant would be my very favorite in Houston. And I am not a sushi eater. The menu offers such a variety of tasteful selections. I loved the shishito and an appetiser serving of ribs. Valet parking is probably your only option if you drive. Parking in the area is very limited.

Best Sushi In Houston

By p13marina |

There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Houston but nothing compares to Uchi. Yes, it's a bit expensive but go for happy hour! Get there 15 minutes before the restaurant opens if you don't have a reservation or you'll find yourself in a 2 hour wait.

So many creative dishes and amazing tastes

By hcmjkm |

This is a very hot restaurant in the former home of a Tex Mex classic, Felix. So the cuisine couldn't be more different if the walls could talk. Uchi's food is fabulous and I would recommend whatever specials they have rather than ordering only the things you've had in other places. The hot rock is fun so be sure to order that (you cook your own appetizer on a sizzling hot black rock delivered to your table). You must reserve way in advance; this place is very very popular. But it's worth it.

Great food restaurant very small so not comfortable

By Debbie M |

Love the food. Service is great but the tables are so close together it not relaxing. Just always feel rushed when eating here

How many flavors in one place

By RjRp2014 |

Every single plate you order would be an explosion of flavors in your mouth! they also have really kind hostess and a good wine selection

Excellent food great vegetarian

By Normondo1 |

Hard to find quality vegetarian food. Tasty and good looking. Noisy and busy but value to wait. Try as much as you can you will not be disappointed

Amazing

By Noemi P |

We just went to Uchi for the first time and it was amazing! We went with friends and got the chefs tasting menu. Each and everything we ate was fantastic and we can’t wait to go back.

Jeff (Geoff?) was amazing - food was too!

By AndyGers766 |

TBH, we weren't too sure what to expect from a sushi place in the middle of the US. The 'parking lot' location wasn't too reassuring either but we need not have worried. I think the location might have been a different type of restaurant, taken over by Uchi to establish their Houston outpost (the original is in Austin, TX). We have eaten at a bunch of sushi/japanese restaurants globally and consider this to have been top three. The service and suggestions from Jeff (to whom we suggested he surprise us with his creations a la Omakase) were all great. He was beyond friendly. To top it all off, the bill was very very reasonable for a place of this standard.

Very good

By Lola M |

The only reason I don’t put 5 star is because the price is too high for the quantity you get. For the rest, it’s perfect. Nice atmosphere and very good food.

Not child friendly. Take your money elsewhere.

By ms |

This place is the epitome of haughtiness. We came here for my birthday. Waited for two hours which wasn’t a problem as we understand. What’s not acceptable is the sheer rudeness of our server. When we were seated she did not care to explain the menu. She did not offer water to our toddler. This just shows how not child friendly they are. Families with kids would like and could enjoy dining out you know. No matter how great your food is customer service is a big part of restaurant business. There are many other great places that provide so much better service. We felt unappreciated and it was very condescending.

Never disappoints

By Karl H |

Sit at the sushi bar and ask for recommendations. Best sushi in Texas by far and very consistent across all three locations.

Atmosphere and Attributes- Amazing

By S2677IUsharonb |

Not only was the atmosphere great but the food was over the top. We came on a Sunday at 5:30 for Happy Hour- dinner which is really packed then so you can take advantage of the great prices then. As soon as 7:00 (or was it 7:30 ?) rolled around the line was gone. Just in case you are wondering........Service terrific. We have always wanted to go there but saw lines around the corner....now we know the secret... and you do too !

Go for happy hour!!

By windbailey |

Really really large portions of great, authentic food! You can get broccoli as a side instead of rice, which is a great option if you’re into that veggie life. Prices are super affordable for everything you get!

The best Japanese dining experience I’ve ever had!

By sm28185 |

What was supposed to be a quick happy hour trip turned into a mini dinner because we just couldn’t stop ourselves - a 3-4 course trip ended up including 10! The best part was that we didn’t even pick most of our items - that was all on our amazing server Matt. Each of his picks were incredible and are things I would love to eat again. The unique twists on a lot of the dishes, from their pickled wasabi to different elements of crunchy/sweet/sour/etc, were perfect. Each dish added more and more to our experience. It’s really hard to pick a favorite, but the Bluefin Flight, Walu Walu, and Hama Chili were notably great. Between Matt’s awesome service, the really chill/fun vibes, and the next level food, I can’t wait to come back again.

Wow. Taste sensation. Read for recommendation

By JohnnyHHHHH |

Visited for dinner at 10:00 pm on a Friday. Our party of 4 had two sushi rolls plus a tasting of 6 choices from the menu. All the choices were very good. The restaurant is very loud and could use some acoustic tiles to help soak up the sound. Okay, the two menu items that we enjoyed the most were the kinoko nabe with foie gras. This is a hot bowl of mushrooms and other good stuff. If you like the umami, savory flavor, you will LOVE this dish. The other was a plate with lumps of king crab. So good! Enjoy! Helpful vote please.

Sushi, Sashimi and satisfaction

By Neil R |

wonderful food. quick and fresh and well laid out. the rolls were light and nice while the sashimi was fresh and succulent

Enjoyed it

By fernm61 |

We read reviews of Uchi restaurant and decided to try during a trip to Houston. We were not disappointed . The menu is extensive but portions are small and for sharing or not. It could be easy to overeat at Uchi. The fish was very fresh in all our dinners. It was crowded so I would recommend reservations. I was told that Dallas and Austin also have an Uchi with variations to the Houston menu.

Fantastic sushi

By Douglas T |

Went with a small group from work for an early dinner as that was the only time we could get a reservation. The benefit of going early is that we got to utilize the happy hour menu. We listened to recommendations from our waiter, Travis, who did a great job. Started with grilled Edamame, wonderful. Had the Hamachi Nabe, Hot Rock, Biendo and Shag to share. Be sure to have the Gyutoro, a piece of tender, flavorful short rib on rice. They have an extensive sake menu which we did not sample, but in prior visits it was a unique experience.

Tasty but expensive

By DutchTX |

Went with a group of four. All the dishes are really good, and special. I am not a big eater, but the portions for the pricing are very small.

Amazing omakase and happy hour options

By Khoi N |

This was the highlight of my H town trip. I see why their restaurant group is looking to compete with the Nobu's of the world. One of my favorite Youtube chefs Joshua Weissman used to work with them and I knew I had to make reservations. First recommendation is to come early and maximize your time here with their extensive happy hour menu. Book at least 2 weeks in advance just in case. From their happy hour menu I would order the following: -Bluefin flight, hama chili, spicy sake maki, wagyu kushiyaki, chicken and caviar skewers and the pork belly The bluefin flight was melt in your mouth. Great value for the 3 pieces that you get. The skewers were seasoned well and the char from the grill was perfect. I chose to do omakase and let the server take care of the menu. I told Hudson to take the wheel and that I'm an adventurous sushi eater. I think by the time I was done I had over 18 courses. Some of my favorite nigiri included the akamutsu, engawa, gyutoro, Santa Barbara uni, shima aji, sake toro, shime saba and finally the foie gras nigiri. Each of the nigiri's were prepared perfectly. Everything was really savory and no need for extra sauce. If you want some extra flavor per bite keep the ponzu sauce and add some lemon to it as a dipping sauce per bite. This experience was so memorable. Hudson was attentive, entertaining and really knowledgeable of the menu and the restaurant group. We were told the line here during happy hour used to be around the block. I couldn't find another HH in the area that had 2 pages worth of food and drinks. With the +18 courses that I had, happy hour appetizers and drinks my share came out close to $300 which isn't that bad at all for the quality cuts that I got. I wasn't able to secure seats at the Austin location, but I'm so glad I did here. Expect a fun happy hour or omakase experience here. I'll definitely be back to try their other menu items and hopefully land a spot right by the chefs.

great

Excellent service, very friendly and smiling waitress, looks very happy at work, other attendees are also very polite and friendly, attentive. Very good food and delicious desserts. highly recommend for all

Came for the brussel sprouts!

By hazellehaz |

I was excited to eat here for a special dinner. They have complimentary valet which was great. The food is presented wonderfully and 4 out of the 5 dishes we tried were amazingly flavorful. Our waiter was knowledgeable, helpful, but arrogant. The cons of eating here is there was so much wait between the tiny dishes that I was starving the whole time we were there for our very long 2 hour dinner. If you go get the brussel sprouts and the fried milk.

Great food and service

The food was excellent. The service was also great and they took extra precaution with covid protocols which was great to see.

Every taste divine

By samkapp |

From toro flown overnight from Tokyo to ending the night on fried milk — cookies and cream on steroids — there wasn’t anything we ordered that we didn’t enjoy! The flavor combinations were truly amazing. So impressed with the offerings and service at Uchi. Can’t wait for our next trip to Houston so we can go back!

Really enjoyed - great alternative

By Daniel |

I don't love suchi, but this was GREAT. Service, food, atmosphere all excellent. Our server helped us with some choices. It is not cheap but worth the $$

I think the hype may have spoild it for me

By Debbie M |

I have been wanting to go to Uchi for years, but never seemed to make it. Everyone always raves about it, so I guess I was expecting off the charts. Now don't get me wrong, it was good, but it was not the best sushi I have ever eaten, but it was among the top. The venue is small, so reservations are a must.

Excellent!

By Kimberly1863 |

Nothing compares to the fresh fish, gifted combination of flavors, knowledgeable staff, and wonderful presentations.

Excellent Sushi!

By torres07md |

I went here for a business dinner. The parking is small, typical for this area of town; but the valet was free except for tip so I used them. The atmosphere is beautiful with a great bar. The sushi was great. I would say that the most amazing dishes were the short ribs, the brussel sprouts, and the fried milk. I will definitely go again. I did not try the vegetarian food, but it looked delicious.

A pleasant surprise

By Lamia2011 |

1st time visit. Excellent service! We didn’t have a reservation but we didn’t have to wait to long for a table. Food is to die for! Can’t wait to go back.

Only second to Japan!!

By 327cubs |

Absolutely epic food! The flavours and quality of the food was amazing. Our waiter Ben was incredible. He asked us what we liked and gave us a selection of sushi, oysters, wagu and rice based on that. Each dish made your mouth single my favourite was the short beef rib. The soft melt in your mouth beef that had been coooed for 72hours at 60’. Wow. What an experience!! We need one to open in London!!!!

Great service, outstanding food, diverse dinner crowd

By J W |

Arrived early for our dinner reservation, so the hostess dried off the outdoor seating area for us while we enjoyed a bottle of Rioja. When our table was ready, we enjoyed sashimi, robata, and shishito peppers. Asked our waiter for recommendations and his choices were spot on, as we would not have tried the various mackerel options but did enjoy the ones he chose for us.

Sensational! A foodies dream

By melhuey2016 |

This restaurant is amazing. I have been to the best sushi restaurants in New York, Chicago, Las Vegas and South Korea. This is BETTER! There is a trick to getting the full experience. Let the server choose for you. Don’t order. When you do this your mind will be blown.

Why I won't return to Uchi

By carl2007 |

I feel like I've mitigated Uchi's ridiculously high prices by going to their happy hour (Sake Social).  However, yesterday took the cake! We parked in the lot behind the restaurant but before we got out of the car we were approached by a fellow who said now we have to valet park.  He got my phone number, sent me a link and said that I should text him when we are ready for our car. We finished our meal, I texted him and while we were waiting at the restaurant door for the car, we were told that we'd have to walk to the parking lot in order to get my car.  The hostess didn't have an answer when I asked her "why then were we required to valet park, what does the valet do?" So, we walked to the parking lot, waited for our car and vowed never to return since we felt that we had just been ripped off.  Ripped off not by a material amount of money but it's the principal of the matter.

Outstanding!

Creative combinations and delicious dinner. Sushi is incredibly fresh and the flavors and selections are truly unique.

Great Special Occation Restaurant

By Jim S |

Uchi turns out to be a great place for splurge, or in my case an anniversary dinner with the wife. I was caught of guard with just how busy this little place is. We booked almost a week early for a Tuesday reservation and all we could get was a 4 o'clock seating. Wow!!! Free valet parking is available in a new office building across the street. Also, we were contacted several times by the restaurant to make sure we were actually coming and would be on time! (On Tuesdays they open at 4. We and several others were waiting outside a few minutes early. At exactly 4, and not a minute earlier, they opened the doors.) Still it turned out great. We ordered the 10 course omakase and Uchi did not disappoint. They gave us a choice of vegetarian (if you want that) and the 10 and 8 course omakase. Of course we took the 10 course. We selected a 50-50 split of raw and cooked selections. Since it was our anniversary, they actually slipped in an 11th item - so thanks for that. I would be hard pressed to chose my favorite course. The quality of the fish and ingredients was faultless. I really appreciated the traditional Japanese style blended with unique and modern seasoning. Brilliant. The recommended Italian light red wine was an excellent pairing and went well with the meal. Including the wine, the tab was a bit over $300 plus tip. A great special occasion meal.

Still here lol

By AUSAGUY007 |

For the quality of the food in the sushi I would say it's below-par what's the long wait times and the quality of the sushi not that great there are other items in the menu it's more of a show then they show a flavor but hey it was great when it opened there was lots of customers the other problem is the parking you have to pay for parking too so if you really want the sushi are plenty good sushi places in town that are a lot cheaper

Simply Sensational!

By Graham H |

We have travelled in Japan, we have eaten at the simplest and the best. We regard ourselves as Japanese officianados, but this is modern Japanese at its finest. The best ingredients, the most innovative recipes and the subtlest of tastes! Extraordinary in every way, from the style, the service, the design and the taste. It isn't cheap, but it won't break the bank either! We really enjoyed it, and why we waited so long to visit, I have no idea! We'll be back soon. Try the waitress' recommendations on food and sake choice - they really know what they are doing.

Inspired Japanese

By ian |

We have been coming here once a year when we visit Houston. The food is inspired, the service excellent and the ambience spot on. There is no need to recommend a dish or two as everything is wonderful.

Excellent sashimi

By NFC |

The Sashimi is excellent as is the warm and cold Sake Been a few times now I prefer sitting at the bar for the theatre, the chefs entertain with there knife work. The individual mouthfuls a delight.

Mother's Day dinner!

By zachsGreenbean |

So I have to say that I am not the biggest fan of Japanese food. My wife on the other hand and the mother of my daughter loves it. So we went to Uchi for Mother's Day dinner. We did the chefs 10 course tasting menu and I have to say it was amazing. The ingredients were extremely fresh and well prepared. The meal was well-balanced from start to finish with a good mix of cold and hot food. Are 3 1/2-year-old daughter loved all of the different things to include all of the raw fish! Our goal is to eat at all the Michelin star restaurants in Houston this year and let me tell Uchi definitely has earned their reputation. The service was excellent from the hostess to the waiter to the management it truly was a great dining experience and we will definitely eat there again.

Great Food and Service

By Kwan_Nyom |

I had a seat at the Sushi bar where I was not only ably fed by the Chefs but also entertained by their banter and chats. I left it in the Chefs hands to put together a tasting menu and was amazed at the combination of flavours, textures and tastes. Every course was excellent, fresh and very tasty. The service was smooth and friendly.

Beautifully Presented & Delightful Service

By Sabid D |

Really amazing Indian cuisine with flavors that impress. The staff, Candy and Deepu, were so pleasant and patient in explaining each dish. Every plate was beautifully presented, making the dining experience both enjoyable and memorable. A must-visit for anyone seeking authentic and thoughtful Indian dining.

Soooooo Good

By Carebo9 |

We usually target one restaurant on our travels and this was it. Uchi Houston did not disappoint! We did the tasting menu which was absolutely phenomenal. Kids started off slow with a couple dishes then fell in love with a lot of things we were eating. Service was awesome but only thing I would say is we asked for a different dessert than our son ordered and got the same one; granted, it was the signature dessert and phenomenal but would have liked something different. Overall, HIGHLY recommend going.

Sushi at its best!

By lovestravel365 |

Refreshing and innovative sushi dishes. Sashimi and nigiri were so fresh. We ordered multiple dishes and shared with the table. The cauliflower poppers and Japanese pumpkin tempura were great little sides. Great food, good service, well-informed wait staff, fresh, fresh seafood, fun atmosphere...all in all a great experience. We will go back!

Top notch japanese

By Elaine R |

I could have stayed all night! The fish is the freshest and of the top quality. This is an experience at a level much higher than your regular high quality Japanese restaurant. We tried fish not available at your local sushi purveyor, such as bream, knifejaw, grunt, and smoked striped jack. No need for wasabi or soy sauce. All fish is subtly complemented with seasonings to complement. I recommend finishing your meal with a fois gras nigiri.

Expensive and Disappointing

By ehhartnett |

My wife wanted to go to a Sushi Restaurant for some time and with the Restaurants reopening because of SARS COV-2 we decided to go the one of the best rated Sushi Restaurants, Uchi. Uchi, we must say, has taken extensive precautions for their Customers safety because of COVID. We do not mind paying for exceptional food experiences that meet expectations and then some, but on this Sunday, Uchi did not deliver and it was an expensive lesson. Blame it on being a Sunday or because of restrictions on number of dinners, the truth is, we paid $35 for 6 pieces of Blue Fin Tuna sashimi, that was very fishy tasting, so it wasn't very fresh. We have fresh fish sent to us from Fulton Fish in NYC and have never had fishy fish of any kind from them, and takes 2 days to get to us. My point is, this Tuna must have been around a look longer than it took for a shipment from NYC. We also tried a Salmon Belly sashimi and it too was fishy tasting. The best part of our meal was the cold Saki our Waiter recommended and the dessert. We also don't like the fact that you don't know if their fish is wild caught, farmed raised or where it may have come from. So this was a disappointing $200+ dinner most respects. The question my wife and I always ask our, Would you go back? No way, they lost their love'n feeling.

Nothing like it

By Renztem13 |

Best Sushi in Houston. Not cheap ( actually $$$$) but it’s so much more than sushi. It’s like a 12 course French tasting menu for Japanese food. Cold and hot. Put yourselves in the waiters hands and just let the food come to the table. Just outstanding. Reservations 30 days before. Or line up early for one of the few walk in tables available. Anthony rocked it. Can’t wait to go back.

Must make a reservation in advance

By Bikingforhealth |

The best in Houston for Japanese Fusion. Small, crowded and not real fancy. The staff is very friendly and go out of their way on service. Expect to wait if you have not called and made a reservation. Fantastic dishes to share. Parking is a mess and the only option is to walk a distance or valet. Valet has a back up at times.

Amazing sushi + hot dishes

By sanakf |

Our group had people who didn't eat sushi (but yes, we still took them to a sushi restaurant!) so we had a mix of sushi + hot dishes. The sushi was of course outstanding - flavors that you didn't think belong together burst in your mouth. The hot dishes included the kinoko nabe, sakana mushi, and brussel sprouts - all excellent especially for people in our group who were introduced to Japanese food for the first time. Try the fried milk for dessert!! You won't regret it. Also, free valet parking behind the building. We had the signature tasting menu + vegetarian tasting menu so if you choose that, plan to be there for at least 2 hours, with a course staggered every 20 mins.

Great Sushi

By joeAtraveller |

i'm not sure I was expecting sushi this good in Houston, even knowing that it is a good food city. The place was packed when we were there. There is a small bar. Seating is a bit tight and it seems to be a bit out of the way, but not far from the highway, although I get the impression that nothing in Houston is far from a highway. Very nice selection of sushi and sashimi. Everything we had was fresh and very tasty. Staff was attentive without being overbearing. The waiter could have been a bit better, but I'm not going to downgrade the restaurant for that. Ncie sake selection. I woudl definintely eat here again.

I've been here a few times and the food is just fantastic! The quality of the fish is wonderful, and the creativity is surprising and exciting.

Mostly hype

By Wanderlust32772 |

Out for our anniversary and finally decided to try the famous Uchi. We chose the “Select tasting” with drink pairing. We were expecting to have our socks knocked off and we left socks intact. Food was good but nowhere near a Michelin level restaurant. Pairings were off. Courses did not flow from one dish to the next. Course descriptions were hurried. Servers were attentive and everyone helped each other. Environment was loud and trendy. Not knowing what to expect, we were hoping for quiet and romantic. Overall for the money, you can do much better in Houston.

Great food but only can have it once

By Treesa_t |

The food was very rich and portions very small. The servers are nice and knowledgable but this is definitely not a place I could go again and again. I feel like they need more simple dishes to balance out all the richness. Also make sure to make a reservation and even when you do, you may still have to wait.

Wow!

By AndersBB |

Fabulous food, wonderful flavors, nice politer and personal service. Sushi, waguy beef, sashimi, marinated fish - all dishes were outstanding, also the dessert was great!

Great dinner!

Tried Uchi for the first time and was very impressed! Amy, our server, was wonderful and directed us through the flavors on the menu. The hot rock waghu was fun, the tempura crispy and delightful, the shashimi divine and to top it off.....fried milk dessert! Great dinner and good atmosphere.

Brilliant sushi

We came here based on the reviews while travelling around America and booked in before we left home. The server was super helpful and suggested we took the tasting menu so we could try the best dishes. We weren’t disappointed! We added in an extra dish too and it was the perfect amount of food for 2 people at a really good price. Would visit again and highly recommend!

Off-the-charts good!

What a fabulous selection of tasty morsels! Luckily another member of our party knew what to order . . . fresh and delicately prepared fish melts in your mouth!

Innovative Japanese Cusine

By Nat N |

A high end Japanese restaurant with very innovative menu. 20 years ago Nobu had set the new standard of fusion Japanese restaurant after that most of fusion Japanese restaurants serve similar menus. Today Uchi had created more innovative dishes such as Hamichi Nabe inspired by Korean bimbimab, Shima Aji Crudo which is neither Japanese nor Chilean at all. Sashimi is very fresh, sushi has been created in Omakase style. With some leaf, salt, pepper and orange peel, the sushi is more refreshing. Hot dish such as Hot Rock and Walu Walu are perfect in itself. The desserts are very impressive, we order fried milk and mint coffee.

Fabulous meal and extraordinary service for birthday dinner

By SarahElizabeth2015 |

I cannot say enough good things about my latest visit to Uchi, despite several previous dinners which excelled. I hosted my adult daughter's birthday there with her dad (my ex) and brother joining us. My daughter chose Uchi since she loves the one in Austin, but I am always a bit anxious hosting when my daughter and her dad are part of the group as they are vegetarian and vegan, respectively, and I want to feel like their meals are just as enjoyable as my own. Well, I could not have been more pleased with how much they enjoyed the highly creative and delicious vegetarian tasting menu. First, our server (I want to say her name was Victoria but I'm horrible with names!) took a genuine interest in assuring the vegetarian tasting menu dishes were adjusted to satisfy both a vegetarian and a vegan (even though the latter is always willing to be flexible when a guest). I was just totally impressed with our server's interest in getting it right and making our table of diverse eaters happy -- truly service of the highest level on display (I imagine she would be the same with any other dietary requirement, such as allergy and the like). Second thing to know is that my ex is himself a highly knowledgeable and sophisticated cook having perfected many complex sauces and other complicated recipes (pre-internet he owned every cooking magazine published, it seems). So that he was highly complimentary of every dish and had numerous questions of the server about particular ingredients and preparation techniques (which she was clearly highly informed about) let me know that Uchi was a hit with him (as it was for my daughter). Previous times at Uchi I did a tasting menu but now I now use my sushi outings to get the fattiest sashimi cuts on the menu as part of my regular omega-3 input. I was impressed when our server came to the table to inform me that they only had the second fattiest tuna otoro at that time (a somewhat late Sunday night) and not the fattiest one, to make sure that was ok with me. My son the carnivore had various sushi and loved it and after tasting one of the vegetarian dishes (one with a crunchy rice, the makimono dish called "spicy crunchy") ordered one for himself. Crazily, we all found my broccoli tempura so delicious that we order a second serving of it for the table. It's nice that the brocolli had some decent salt as do all the dishes, as some restaurants seem to under-salt these days. Finally, we got some thoughtful extras due to my daughter's birthday including a second dessert which we all shared and both desserts were incredible including one with compressed strawberries which were amazing. In summary, Uchi proved itself to be a restaurant which can truly delight 4 diners each having distinct dietary habits from the other. And again, the service was superb and gave me such a great experience as host of this family outing for a special occasion.

Great food

Uchi has daily, 5-6:30pm saki social. The light bites are fun and delicious, there are also sharing plates. Reservations are not required but we did make reservations and they have complimentary valet which is a big plus in that area. Our crew will return.

Best sushi in Houston may be the states

This is a whole new take on sushi. Every thing we had was a whole new experience from any other sushi you will have known

Amazing Food and Service!

By flying4fish |

After a great experience at Uchi in Dallas, we decided to take a chance and walk-in to Uchi in Houston. There was a line going out the door, but we were early enough to get a seat at the bar (beer wine bar, not sushi bar). Our server, Steven, guided us through the menu, making great suggestions and sometimes surprising us with something he thought we would love. It was as memorable evening filled with laughs and spectacular food. But you should probably make a reservation to insure you get seated.

Lots of Hype, but Not impressed

By Samuel L |

A Long wait if you don't have a reservation, even for the sushi bar. Tried about 10 small individual items - $10 a pop. They were unique dishes with unique taste. Definitely not a traditional sushi restaurant. An experience - yes, impressed - not. If you are a sushi roll person, this place is not for you. If you are frugal, definitely not for you. One visit to this place was enough for me, unless someone else is paying.

Great food/Great service

By emmats |

We were visiting from out of town and our friends took us to dinner here. They suggested just letting the serve choose our dishes, which we did. She asked a few questions about likes and dislikes, and the plates started coming out. Everything was very fresh and flavorful. I can’t pick which dish was the best, they were all so good!

Fresh fish, ok atmosphere

By aliecakes |

The food is good here. It is fresh. You will enjoy it. Being from LA, I wasn’t blown away. The ambiance leaves a lot to be desired, the staff a little aloof. I left thinking, ‘meh’. I am glad I came, but I do not need to come back. I think I would for happy hour. But it is definitely over rated. I think it is just Houston does not have a great selection for upscale sushi. If you are from out of town, do not be heart broken if you skip it. I will say, their sake selection is on point. Try “Dreamy Clouds”, if you enjoy unfiltered.

Best Fusion Sushi in Houston

By Jay Stanaford |

Geezus Christ on a Bicycle, hands down the best sushi experience we’ve ever had. My wife and I are frequent travelers and have eaten sushi at many of the top venues in Houston and around the country. From the moment we sat down and were served the wonderful unfiltered saki to the final desert of fried milk & chocolate was a seductive and wonderful fusion of many different plates and servings of sushi. I will say the highlights were the A5 grade Wagyu & the absolutely delicious Brussel Sprouts. Be adventurous and allow the server to bring out chef specials. It was all wonderful. We will be back again & again... Slightly pricey

Uchi revisited - best happy hour for foodies

By Eric S |

Uchi happy hour such a unique experience for foodies, where so many delicate and delicious dishes can be sampled without running up a huge bill. The flavors are extraordinary and deserve to be eaten slowly. Attached is a happy hour menu. Our favorite items are Walu walu, nasu nigiri and machi cure, but really everything is superb. Include the most attentive service imaginable and you have the makings of such an enjoyable dining experience. One of our favorite restaurants in Houston.

Is a must

I had an amazing Japanese food experience! i hate coriander, and complain all the time about it, but i always choose cuisines that include this plant! I didn’t feel it in any dish here!

Excellent Japanese Fusion - Tapas to Share

By JKK031017 |

Been there twice with out of own guests in 2017 and 2018. Pros: 1. Food and sake were above average, ordered many (about 10 to 12) tapas dishes to share. 2. Services were outstanding both times. We booked 5 PM when it opened. Greeted promptly, servers lined up and walked customers to tables. 3. Prices were very reasonable, thinking about $70 per person not including alcohol. 4. Servers were excellent to stage the 10 courses or so, from appetizers to protein etc., one to two courses at each serving making us hungry! Cons: 1. It is contemporary Japanese & American fusion. It may not delight you if you're looking for classical Japanese cuisines. I have been to Japan more than 20 times on business, I do not recall seeing this type of fusion tapas. 2. It's really not fine dining here, but services were efficient and were excellent both times. We'll be back. It is different, it's an excellent venue to entertain your loved ones and friends. I recommend it highly. It is short of five stars, I think I am not used to fusion dining establishments, I am more into the real stuff.

Dining delight

Fantastic meal. We sat at the sushi bar and watched the chefs prepare the meal. Visited on a Monday night and this place was very busy, great place for conversation with music in the background. I will definitely visit this place again the next time I am in Houston.

Not your typical Sushi Place

By jecarter23 |

I must admit I like an occasional Rainbow roll or some Spicy Tuna but after a while even that gets old. Here is the solution. Very creative approach to sushi. I don’t even know what we ate because my wife had waiter order for us. My favorite was some kind of raw fish over yuca chips. How’s that for descriptive? Fried ice cream is no joke as well. Only suggestion is octopus wasn’t worth it. But another round of Sake instead.

A most frustrating experience.

Uchi is one of our favorite restaurants with excellent food and service. Our birthday celebration of a week ago Monday however, was a terrible experience. Uchi's valet service took my car when we arrived and brought it back after dinner with over $3,000 in damage to thefront of the car. Uchi's valet service has disavowed any responsibility for this damage. Think twice about patronizing Uchi and particularly allowing valet to park your car. Charlie Lusk

Small bites; big happy!

By Lisa D |

We were delighted our kids could get a reservation for the four of us: definitely required. As we were in the first group of diners for the evening, we all queued outside the front door and were seated by parties. Not a bad seat in the house, as far as we could tell. All the staff were great at describing each of the many small-bite plates and how they might please our quirky palates. We each ordered two plates to share (thus eight portions), then added on with what we liked the first time or what we wanted to try next. Plates are designed so that each taste should include a bit of every flavor on the plate, to get the chef's full intentions. A parade of dishes came out well-timed to allow each to have its moment, as did fresh silverware and pours of whatever we were drinking. A happy 90 minutes passed with our taste buds being delighted. The bill was as expected; this is definitely a special-occasion place and so very, very worth it.

The absolute worst experience

By Jessflip |

The absolute worst experience We had a reservation for 930... it’s currently 1005. The hostess said if we want to sit now, we can sit at the sushi bar... as if that was a compromise. We wanted to enjoy a nice sit down dinner and have a great catch up with a group of girlfriends. The girls later sat us near the door (it’s super cold out, with visibly more tables available) multiple tables inside available... we asked to sit inside, the hostess said that’s reserved to bigger customers.. when I asked what exactly she meant by that, she said “you’re fine where we sat you.” It’s really annoying this is where the girls and I all enjoy dining when we are back in Houston... so happy MAD opened up. Food quality is the same.. with nicer staff

Excellent Vegetarian choices!!

By ManiPenny |

Excellent Veg options! I am a vegetarian . So I was very happy to find a chef’s vegetarian tasting menu . It came in 10 courses . But courses are small. So don’t get scared by a 10 course meal. My family loved it. We went there for Pre Father’s Day celebration. We had Tomato sushi, Avacado Sushi, eggplant sushi, mushroom sushi , fried Brussels sprouts( it was delicious ), mushroom and rice, pear salad and some more. Last dish was dessert and it was fried milk. It is so yummy that we ordered an extra one in the end. So , to all vegetarians out there - please go and definitely try their chef’s veg tasting menu and you will be very pleased. Our server was a very helpful Muk who actually suggested some of the courses. And ladies, one must not forget to order Lychee Sake . I would definitely recommend this place!!

Sensational Sushi

By Alan B |

We had never been to Uchi despite hearing all the raves, and it certainly lived up to its reputation for presentation and quality. We were blown away by the unique offerings and and the great service we received. Save room for dessert - the fried milk is a must-try. Another dish not to miss was the brussels sprouts. Finally, it was the least expensive but perhaps best single thing we tried: Nasu Nigiri (eggplant sushi). Can't wait to go back!
