Great blend for a mixed group of herbivores and carnivores.. Only one frustrating flaw: the tempura dipping sauce when asked for the second time was not the same as the first tempura sauce. Everything else was wonderful

I liked this sushi place because they did not skimp on the size of the fish for each individual piece as I have noticed happening at my sushi restaurants in NJ. Service was good as well

The sushi and sashimi were great, but the fried chicken was so awesome that even the North Carolinians with us were impressed. It's inexpensively priced for what it offers in food and service. The restaurant has the typical aquariums prevalent in asian restaurants, but they are quite large and they kept our 3 year old engaged.

It is not only the fact that Uchu Sushi has great sushi and more, at a very reasonable price, that make this my new "go to" sushi restaurant, it is the staff that make it equally as great. No offense to other sushi restaurants in the Portland area that have grown so huge with their attempts to blanked Portland with "fast food" sushi, but it is nice NOT to get shouted at when you walk in the door by the sushi chef's with whatever they say in Japanese. The sushi at Uchu Sushi actually tastes fresh, the hot entrees are actually hot, and the portions are big. It does have that Portland urban vibe to it. Something other sushi restaurants lack in the area. All the Japanese decor has been replaced with huge fish tanks. Check it out. You will not be sorry

Large happy hour menu. Lots of rolls (full size) on the happy hour for $4-5. Cocktails are the best… currently traveling outside of Portland for many months and I miss the cocktails the most. $5-6 on happy hour :) If you like vodka - try the ginger blossom. If you like gin - the hourglass. If you like spicy - habanero margarita! Love the staff. Love the owner. Love Mississippi Street.

The service was abit slow but thats because the place was packed. The food was AWESOME, very fresh and authentic.

I went to Uchu for lunch on a Monday. The restaurant is located in the Mississippi District of Portland (North). The food, service and atmosphere were all top notch. We enjoyed some sushi (nigiri) and the pieces were not only big but also very fresh and tasty. We also had a bento box (which is part of the lunch special and a good value) plus some jalapeno poppers as an appetizer. Our server Ray was super nice and very knowledgeable about the menu indicating which rolls and other items were most popular. Although, we did not order any specialty rolls, Uchu has a lot of them! Like a lot of restaurants in the Portland area, Uchu has plenty of vegan and vegetarian options. They also feature a full drink menu including lots of beers on tap. The atmosphere includes a very cool and colorful fish tank which adds to the ambiance. Pro Tips - did not need a reservation for lunch (and it was a weekday); however Uchu is not that big of a place and started to fill up by 1pmish. You can sit at the bar and get food if the tables are full. For dinner, especially on a weekend, might want to make a reservation. The Mississippi District is filled with lots of fun shops and restaurants. There is adequate street parking on Mississippi and if you need to, park on the side streets then walk up. As an FYI, the jalapeno poppers appetizer was larger than expected; 4 pieces and definitely shareable for 2 people. Uchu also makes a roll with the jalapeno popper. I would go to Uchu again for lunch or dinner and likely try the friend chicken!

We went for happy hour and while the prices were good, it was a bit underwhelming. We ordered the dynamite roll and the spider roll. Both were decent but I have had better. The fried chicken was good but there was too much of it without any veggies on the side.

The happy hour thing is awesome (I believe it's Monday-Wednesday all day) cause it's cheap. I've had better sushi at the Sushi Hana conveyorbelt in Tigard. But, the sushi here is good. Just not the best I've ever eaten.

This places advertises its fried chicken, but honestly I wasn't impressed. It was seasoned fairly blandly and even came out slightly burnt. The sushi was great though, and being able to sit in front of the fish tank definitely made for an entertaining dinner.

We have been here many times and have decided that happy hour is definitely the way to go. They have great sashimi and their poke salad is to die for. I would also highly recommend the Soba Ale that they serve. Stay clear of the ramen; last time I got it, the noodles were extremely overcooked and soggy.

We were visiting Portland and a friend who lives there took us to Uchu, it's one of his fav places. The sushi was amazing! We're from San Francisco and we have plenty of good sushi places, but this place was fantastic! Next time we're in Portland we will definitely go there. We loved the atmosphere too, the fish tanks were soothing to watch. I had their lychee rain cocktail and it was scrumptious! Do yourself a favor and check out the Mississippi district of Portland, very eclectic with great restaurants, bars & shops.

we hadn't tried uchu yest,a dn sat outside saturday for lunch on a hot day...i had a kirin, and my partner had a specialty cocktail that were both refreshing...we shared Saba † (Mackerel) GF* Sake † (Salmon) GF*, wild caught salmon, vegan/veggie rolls, assorted NIGIRI 2pcs rolls, and all of it was delicious...some sustainable seafood was offered too...we were relaxed under the umbrella, watching the world go by...we liked this place..the server was very friendly and efficient...thx

It can be a bit noisy but a great place to eat. The prices are very reasonable, particularly if you take advantage of their extended happy hour menu. I haven't tried their fried chicken but hope to do it next time.

I came here after a long day of traveling over from the east coast. The food was superb, and I was pleased to find my favorite cocktail there as well! The waiter was really wonderful as well.

I was a bit skeptical when I saw a sushi place serving fried chicken. However, the sushi was excellent and the fried chicken wings were a good compliment. Prices are reasonable too.

Mediocre food, underwhelming service. Go elsewhere in PDX or to any of the more accommodating neighbors in Mississippi.

Lots of vegan options that are clearly marked on the menu. Try the iggy popper roll with vegan cream chz, seriously, it's the best! It's surrounded by other really awesome businesses (if you're vegan or if you're not, stop by No Bones right next door for a drink). Only 4 stars because the fish tanks are sick and sad. I like pretty exotic fish but I like them more in their natural habitat not in a restaurant that serves up fish. Gross.

Went here on a Friday night a little after 5 - parking is definitely a problem. We ended up parking 3 blocks away. We were fortunate to be seated promptly. Server was adequate. Menu has variety of Japanese offerings. We tried sushi - which was pretty average. None of us were a fan of the sushi roll with fried chicken and cream cheese. Chicken katsu was pretty dry. Teriyaki beef had a relatively syrupy teriyaki glaze - my personal preference is that the meat have some marinade time to absorb the flavor, which seemed minimal. If we lived in the neighborhood this might be a good neighborhood place to go, but it isn't a trip we will be taking in the future.

This place was recommended to us by The Modern Man as we waited for our hair appointment. They suggested the lunch special. Well, we got excited about the array of sushi that we forgot about the lunch special! PLUS it was all day happy hour! We got two rolls, hot poppers, a beer and mixed drink all for under $20 USD! Oh, and the poppers? Stuffed with cream cheese & tuna then breaded and fried served cut lengthwise. Yes, the best hot poppers ever! (Be sure to have a nice cold beer for backup!)

Our dinner party of four arrived on a busy Friday evening.Options while waiting for a table were standing outside or sitting at the bar. We chose the latter although it's hard to carry on a conversation in a loud bar when seated four-in-a-row. The menu offerings clearly included happy hour appetizer specials, but when trying to order a couple of plates while waiting for our table, we were told we could not partake of any food items at the bar, even though others, presumably not waiting for dining tables, were chomping away. Were they afraid that we were going to fill up on less-expensive happy hour offerings and order fewer more-expensive dinner items, thereby lowering the total amount spent? That's the only explanation I can come up with, other than the "weird" culture that is so popular in Portland. Personally, I strive to not be weird, but maybe that makes me weird in Portland. Food for thought...something we couldn't get at the bar. We did eventually get seated and ordered tons of sushi and drinks so they got their money's worth out of our group. I don't know why they were so unbending. The service at dinner was good, the speed of the kitchen not so good, as it took nearly two hours to get through dinner that in most other places would have passed in half that. I can't imagine going back, unless it was only for the happy hour and not dinner. Perhaps then I could get some sushi in the lounge.

My friends visited last night and a tall male waiter was so incredibly rude to us that we went to a different restaurant. I don't need the attitude from somebody before I've even sat down. I will never go there again.

My family and I went here after the fried chicken was highly recommended to us. YUM! A half of a chicken... deep fried! Great flavor, HUGE portions, staff was very nice... their lemonade could use a little work but all in all- great experience!

Impressed with the size and quality of nigiri sushi portions, some interesting specials including Chu-toro which was quite good Chicken Katsu needs to be more tender but was a good size Server was very good at explaining some menu items but clueless with others. 30 bucks for 2 plates of nigiri, a katsu, and a Sapporo, is a pretty good deal for Portland on a friday night. Cool fishtanks !

Sushi was very good and affordable. We selected several appetizers and dishes for the table. Some were off the happy hour menu (decent portions) and a few were not. They had some sushi combos you cannot get anywhere else, such as the fried chicken sushi, which is a must-try. We left full with some money left in our wallet.

I really liked it here. They have a large happy hour menu and I love the vibe of the place. I can't vouch for the fried chicken but the sushi was great. I would recommend a visit to Uchu next time you're on Mississippi.

There are a lot of restaurants squeezed into this strip along Mississippi and the cuisine varies a lot. Other reviews here talk in depth about specific dishes. We went mostly for happy hour and did the specials that were listed. We did 2 big plates of sushi, 2 drinks and a side. It only cost $19 and it was very delicious. This is a relatively small place, so get there early. They did have a few tables outside and they were busy! That is always a good sign. Friends and I were very impressed and the service was top-notch.

The sushi (especially the baked mussels & spider rolls) were absolutely incredible! Not the prettiest of restaurants, but great staff & incredible food ... excellent Happy Hour too.

He stop here for a quick lunch on the go and the service was good and the food was really delicious and the place offered us a table outside and also they got inside table too It was a good stop after all.

I love Uchu. Happy Hour is one of my favorite in Portland - the food options are the HH menu are expansive (includes full size sushi rolls, cold and hot appetizers, etc). Cocktails are my favorite though (also discounted on HH). If you're into cocktails, try the GINGER BLOSSOM! Habanero margarita is also really good, although it can pack some heat. However I think that detail's pretty obvious from its name ;) Favorite eats include: BC Salmon, Mississippi, Red Dragon, Spring Rolls, Jalapeño Poppers I don't have kids, but some of my friends do and the big fish tanks are a great place to sit, especially if you want to entertain a toddler or younger children. I am celiac, so I do appreciate the amount of GF options they offer (which are also marked on the menu)... although be sure to mention if you have an allergy since it's not a GF kitchen. Lots of veg / vegan options as well if you - or your company - are looking for that. The patio is awesome! During the nice summer nights it can be hard to get a patio seat, but there are two huge garage doors that leave the inside dining area breezy and keep you feeling close enough to the action outside. Service has always been great. Some nights (especially HH times) can get pretty busy, so expect a bit of a wait on food if the restaurant is completely packed. But I'd say that's standard anywhere. I tend to enjoy hanging out for awhile and watching the street action anyway, especially on summer evenings.

Renting a house in the area and a friend recommended we stop in for happy hour. The sushi on the happy hour menu was pretty basic, but fresh and tasty! Their version of the basic California was better than many we have had at other places. The front opens to the street which allows for a nice breeze, even though we sat at the sushi bar because there were some rambunctious parties eating up front. Overall a good experience.

This place really does rock. I was skeptical first in comparing it to Sushi Hana in Tigard, but this place has become a regular lunch spot and I really do enjoy it. Today, went with a friend here and we got our usual--pot of tea, spicy calamari and some rolls to share. The tea comes with baby-sized tea cups (which is fun and authentic) and it's usually not busy so we can just linger and enjoy. Today was different--must've been the sun shining that made everyone crash the restaurant. Either way, the spicy calamari was delicious--seemed more friend than usual, but still a delightful pairing to the spicy mayo. We got three rolls (probably should have only gotten two rolls because we were still quite full after three, and that's less than we usually get). The dynamite roll was ok--I wouldn't get it again necessarily. It was coated in weird, soft, tempura like stuff. The spider roll isn't my favorite either, but I did enjoy the spicy salmon roll. Should've went with the Iggy Popper--always a delicious favorite. The service was on point today--very fast getting the food out! And it was happy hour, so $22 sushi lunch split between two people wins.

I've been to Uchu twice in the past month and I've experienced nothing but great food. Both times, my party has ordered Spicy Calamari and multiple sushi rolls, sharing with each other. Portion sizes were such that between three of us ladies, we only needed three rolls with our app and drinks... and that's coming from a girl who can generally eat four rolls alone. Spicy tuna, Vegas, and Dynamite are among our favorites. Last visit, we started with the Poke Tuna Salad, very similar to Poke I've had in Hawaii, and Fried Baby Octopus, which would have been great appetizers... if only they had come before our rolls. Regardless, the food was wonderful. The thing I was most impressed with about Uchu is how well their Calamari/Octopus is done. In my experience, they were not at all chewy or difficult to eat. And their happy hour menu, which has many of their rolls and drinks discounted, sometimes goes all night. If you enjoy cocktails, the Lychee Rain is a great choice.... not too sweet. Overall, this is my favorite sushi place in Oregon at this point. Service could be a little better, but they are generally fast and consistent.

We were looking for a restaurant that could offer a good selection for our group, vegans to carnivores. Uchu was perfect! Tons of choices, meat, poultry, seafood, veggies. Many options, small plates to full meal deals. I had miso soup, inari, fried tofu, and salmon cheek...each of these small plates $2. - $6. Really? Salmon for $6.? Each were hot, delicious and the portion was as expected/hoped! Other people at my table ordered a bit of everything, fried chicken, sushi rolls, curry and noodles. Everyone was very happy with their selections. Food was fresh, attractive, tasty and well seasoned, and portions were good. The only negative comment was the Yakisoba was a bit too "saucy". Loved the fried chicken! It looks different but don't let that worry you - large portion (1/2 a large chicken) and the batter was tasty and crunchy. We didn't have any trouble getting a table for a late Saturday lunch but there are not a lot of tables so I imagine it can get crowded. Service was very good. Love the fish tanks for post eat meditations. Give Uchu Sushi and Fried Chicken a try!

Decent sushi and great happy hour. The service isnt that good but the prices and quality bump it up to 4 stars. If it's nice out, it is great to be able to sit outside in the little courtyard to people watch. Drinks are also pretty good.

Went there with a couple of friends for dinner. Ordered the veggie sushi which was superb and delicious. We also called for a couple of other items from the menu. everything tasted perfect. Love the aquariums in the restaurant!

What a fun place to eat. The aquarium alone is worth the visit. Nice space, ok service. We did a combo of happy hour and regular menu. That way we could try lots of things. WE did for sure. Prawn tempure, gyoza, shrimp shumai, chicken wings, house salad, cuke salad and tempura roll. The food is worthy, give it a try. Not a bad bite in the house.

I had a lovely drink with rum and jalapeno simple syrup, delicious poke salad and some nice sushi bites (iggy popper was very good!) for a reasonable price. Enjoyed myself and the atmosphere.

This little spot has a nice location right on Mississippi. I didn't get any food but just went in for a couple of drinks. Bartender was great and willing to make any drink he knew. Until I have some of their sushi I can really justify a 5/5.

Have eaten here three or four times now, the food is always fresh and delicious and the service is very good. I did one less star only because of the smallness and seating. Crowded, not too comfy. But I love this restaurant, it really is stellar. Am getting a to go order for the first time tonight, I hope it doesn't disappoint!

We visited during happy hour on a weekday afternoon. The HH menu was quite large and had lots of options (which is great, since my sister is lactose tolerant and a part-time vegan). I opted for the dynamite roll and some spring rolls, while my daughter had the fried chicken. Everyone enjoyed their food, as it was all quite tasty. The service was friendly and pretty even-paced, and the place is quaint. The bathrooms were a little less desirable, with graffiti all over and not incredibly clean, but overall we had a good time.
Good sushi
We came to Uchu for an appetizer and were not disappointed. We had the dynamite roll and it was amazing. Service was good and we enjoyed sitting out on the patio area
