My wife loves Italian food. And a surprise visit to a resturant she never heard of was a big hit. She was throughly impressed by the food and service. Major points for me and Umberto's.

What a wonderful surprise!

By Texasgirl0915 |

Great and generous food in a strip shopping center. The Italian food selection was large all items were very good. What really stood out, above even the great dishes, was the service. Our waitress was excellent! She was a professional who did a great job. I was impressed. We especially enjoyed the salads, seafood dishes and Eggplant Parm. The wines by the glass were good and affordable.

Surprising and delicious!

We were invited to a dinner with a large group (65). When I saw the location in a strip mall, I was not expecting much. What a surprise. Not only were our 5 LONG tables flawlessly served, but there were also some tables of families also enjoying their meals. The spaghetti which accompanied my husband's steak was delicious as was the salmon special of the day. Am going back to have their Italian food which everyone said was delicious. Most memorable for me was finding our waiter was from Ruwanda.

Bravo Italiano!

We were visiting from out of town and came back twice during our stay! We enjoyed the veal marsala, chicken francesca and various pasta dishes. Each entree comes with homemade soup or salad and a vegetable. I highly recommend sharing an entree and getting the Umberto's salad, since the entrees are large. Save room for dessert. The creme brulee and cannoli are fantastic! We often eat in good New York Italian restaurants and this one was up to that standard with reasonable prices. The wait staff were excellent. It is a casual place and very relaxing.

Amazing Italian food much better than any chain!

We are in town for a conference and decided to try this place because of the good reviews and close proximity to our hotel. Turned out to be great even though the location and decor is a little simple. The chicken Gorgonzola was amazing, and the beef lasagna was good, too. Great bread, salad, and appetizers, too. And the waiter was very attentive and pleasant, too. Highly recommend.

The location is in a little shopping area and a little hard to find. I enjoyed the pesto raviolis and some fried calimari. The service was good.

Tasty Italian

Service was excellent Food was fantastic, although the portions was a lot , if you don’t eat a lot share a meal - Cost of the food was reasonable Highly recommended

Delightful Italian Cuisine

By usindo |

This is a hidden gem located in the middle of a strip center. The Shrimp Umberto's and eggplant parmesan were our strong plates with a clam chowder soup and a house salad that came with cherry tomatoes, kalamata olives and 2 types of lettuce. Both were scrumptious. One can pay more in San Antonio but this meal is without parallel. We have had red meat, chicken, pasta dishes, etc. All have been carefully prepared and the presentation and taste are tops. The address should tell you that it is located 1/2 mile outside Loop 410 at Culebra and Ingram Roads. Tops in my book. Discreet servers who pay attention to you without being intrusive!

Delicious Italian dinner

By Lauralee74 |

Don’t let the strip mall entrance and sparse decor fool you, this restaurant is worth a trip for delicious homemade pastas and Italian meals. My family and I are visiting San Antonio and I was so tired of American BBQ fare I threatened bodily injury if we didn’t have something different and we were all craving Italian. Based off previous reviews we selected Umbertos. We were greeted promptly and were presented with complimentary bruschetta when we were seated almost immediately. The menu offers traditional Italian meals, pastas and pizza. Complimentary garlic rolls were hot and tasty as well. All meals include a soup or salad. We ordered the eggplant Parmesan appetizer and it was the size of a main dish order. Tender sweet and baked just right. My daughter ordered the lasagna, my husband ordered the Homemade Beef Ravioli, I ordered the Umbertos pasta. My son ordered off the children’s menu and received fettuccini with a meatball (no sauce). He was the only one who could finish his meal. Each of us tried each other’s plates and enjoyed them all, but the portions were so large we went home with our leftovers. If you are looking for a very reasonable quality authentic Italian meal this is the place to go to! We were so happy we tried it!

Fabulous food

My resort made a recommendation for this family owned Italian restaurant and were were not disappointed. The first night we visited we just got pizza and OMG their pizza was so different and so tasty. We had a mushroom and onion and my girlfriend's husband had pepperoni and onion and minestrone soup. We went back a few days later and I had the eggplant appetizer which was enough for a meal. It was so delicious. I also had a salad. My husband had chicken parmesan and my girlfriend had a chicken dish. We all loved our meals. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Great food, great prices and wonderful service.

Quality is Not what it used to be !

By Margie C |

We have gone to Umberto's with friends for years and have always LOVED it! Our favorite has always been the Ribeye Steak special ... plenty of food, great quality, great price! But the last 3 times, our steak has had a lot of gristle, and was dry and tough.... and served in several small pieces instead of a whole steak. We have always requested the meat be cooked "medium," NOT "Super Well-done." One bad steak can happen anywhere but 3x in a row indicates a pattern. When we told the waitress our steak was dry, tasteless & hard to cut, she only apologized and said she would let the cook know. One friend insisted on a new one but the rest of us ate it because we were hungry, and it had taken quite a while to get our food. Prices have gone up which we would understand if it was because they are paying more for the same cut of meat, but that is not the case ...the quality of the meat has greatly decreased. All our friends have had similar experiences, so we have decided not to go back until the quality of our favorite steak goes up.

Yes yes yes

I just had a spiritual experience eating @ Umberto's . Everything was awesome . The tea was fresh . I started off with the minestrone it was gone in 60 seconds flat . I ordered the beef lasagna. The portion was huge !! You definitely get what you pay for . The bread .... I literally closed my eyes while I was chewing . It was that good . It’s extremely clean . The waitstaff is friendly . My waitress was very nice & patient . Don’t let this place being in a shopping center detour you . GO NOW

Again and again and again....

We keep going back and this neighborhood gem just keep producing great dining experiences! The food is fresh, plentiful and delicious and the service is excellent. Value is very, very hard to beat....even in San Antonio. Can't say enough about this place. Oh, I'd recommend you get reservations now...It has become more and more popular......TRY IT, YOU'LL LIKE IT!!

Surprise, Surprise, Surprise

By Fred P |

I have a dislike for strip mall restaurants, I just have an uneasy feeling. But, there are exceptions and Umberto's is an exception. For three years he has stood in this location and until last Tuesday, I had never eaten there. It was only because of a gift card that I went. SURPRISE!!! The ambiance is calm and serene, No loud noise like a Chili's or TG Friday's,.The wait staff impeccable and the food, well the leftovers were as good as the night before. We asked the waiter, Wendell for his recommendation and he said his favorite was the Chicken Franchesca, which is what my wife chose. It was spicy, but not too, it had an assortment of portabella mushrooms and peppers and a portion that provided me with lunch on Wednesday. I had Beef Lasagna, he was flavorful, cooked just right and was more than enough for a man my size. Excellent house salad with fantastic vinaigrette dressing. All in all, this was a super dining experience, good food, ambiance and reasonable prices. will I go back? YOU BET!

Great Italian Food

Great little Italian place tucked in a strip shopping center. Food was delicious and very good portion sizes. Excellent service. Dined with a group of 10 and received impeccable service. Reasonable prices.

Always Umberto’s

By GoJaysterGo |

Anytime I go to San Antonio I want to eat as much Mexican food as I can but since discovering Umberto’s I now have to eat there instead. What a surprise to find some of the tastiest Italian food served by the most welcoming accommodating staff in a strip center! Lots of free parking, no long waits, cheery well decorated atmosphere, spotlessly clean, and a good menu at great prices have made this a family favorite. The last time we went there for dinner someone in our party asked for a special dish that was only served on the lunch menu but it was prepared for him anyway at the lunch price as well.

A Typical But Tasty Place to Eat

By Mary P |

Had a mid-week lunch with hubs at Umberto’s Italian Grill. The first thing I noticed was the stark and echo-ish atmosphere. But it looked clean and the hostess seated us quickly. Waitress came right away and we ordered two glasses of the house red wine and a fried calamari appetizer. We were given two bruschetta samples and that was nice but it needed seasoning. Kind of dull. It took forever to get the wine. Too bad it came at all…it tasted like acidic diesel fuel. To be fair, we are not red wine drinkers (nor diesel fuel drinkers) so “perhaps” that’s what red wine is supposed to taste like. Will never order again. The calamari was tasty and crispy. Their basket of rolls (called it rosemary rolls but didn’t see nor taste rosemary) was good and if I had more room, I would have ordered more. The salad was simple, nothing to write home about but it was BIG and their house Italian dressing was good. Hubs and I could have shared one. I ordered the lemon chicken picatta and it was spot-on! Tangy but not too heavy. Hubs had the chicken parm and it was typical but tasty. He felt it had just a bit too much cheese on top. His marinara and my lemon butter sauce were on the salty side but probably because it is a commercial restaurant. We seldom use salt at home so it is on us! Both plates had broccoli and carrot accompaniment and it was perfectly cooked and crisp and both also came with a side of spaghetti which was cooked al dente and buttered which added to the overall food experience. The food was technically cooked quite well but it still lacked that finesse I have tasted in Italy (and to be fair again, these plates are not common dishes in Italy…mostly American/Italian). For a little neighborhood joint, I would say Umberto’ is a good place to dine. Will try it again to sample other items. For having "Grill" in their name, we didn't see any grilled items on the lunch menu. Perhaps at dinner. Be aware that parking lot is busy as they share with so many other businesses especially a crazy busy medical clinic in this huge strip mall, but Umberto’s has some reserved parking spaces in front of their place. If you are lucky, like we were, you can snag a spot.

EXCELLENT !!!

By Mountain Mama |

We drove from California to San Antonio to visit our son at Lackland and were renting a house nearby. We set out on foot to find some lunch - we were so tired of junk food. We found Umbertos in a little strip mall nearby and what a surprise ! The food is awesome and the service is perfect. It’s cute and clean and charming inside. We will definitely try to come back before we leave town. Highly recommend this restaurant ! 😊

Very tasty Italian food in an unexpected location

By formerexpatCT |

Umbertos was recommended by our concierge and we gave it a try. Don’t be put off by its strip mall location or it’s plain and simple decor. The food is very, very good. The salad was crisp and fresh. The bread is crispy and tasty. My entree, the Gorgonzola chicken was surprisingly delicious. We absolutely would return!

Disappointing

By zamboni12043 |

Went with friends and this place was close to our hotel. We made reservations for six and were put in the back room. We ordered our food and salads. Out of six, the waited screwed up 2 of the 6 salads. I ordered chicken parmigiana with a side of Italian sausage. The sausage never came. The chicken was thin and overcooked. The pasta was nothing to write home about. I had read reviews and it did not live up to the hype. Will not go back.

Wonderful food at a great price

By BYUDad |

Following a tip from Trip Advisor and others we tried Umberto's last night. Wonderful food, very close to Sea World and Hyatt Hill Country Resort. Very reasonable prices and ample portions. It will definitely be on our repeat list for the next time we are in San Antonio.

Not so good, just average

By TJ |

We were disappointed. Service was good, price ok. But food only so-so. Bread tasteless. Wine not good. Ribeye tender but lots of gristle. Soup barely ok. Shrimp good. Pasta just ok. Overall, just not very special.

Very good food, great service, good find!

By Maura L |

We visited Umberto's for my son's birthday while traveling to Sea World San Antonio. The food was exceptional, the service was fast and the ambiance was quiet and just what we needed after a full day at the park. The staff was accommodating since it was my son's birthday and brought out a cheesecake with a candle. The food was absolutely delicious (and we tend to be picky!). I would only recommend a better selection of wine. But the two different glasses of wine my husband and I ordered were great. Excellent restaurant!

Great food

First off this place is hidden in a small strip center. This place was the best Italian food I have ever had. This is a place you have to try. Very nice and clean place. Family owned . I will be returning soon.

Wow. Fantastic food, fantastic service. Clean bathrooms. Health inspector score 100. Some of the best Italian food in San Antonio. You won’t regret eating here. Epic.

A terrific experience

By shadow17 |

We had been to Umberto's for some time due to the distance from our home. We were very pleased that the service and food quality is still top-notch. Our group had the Salad with chicken, Umberto's Shrimp with pasta, Umberto's Shrimp with Risotto and Umberto's vegetables. Dessert consisted of Cheesecake, Creme Brulee and Cannoli. The Salad with chicken was huge and rated excellent. The Shrimp, on both plates was cooked perfectly in a light lemon butter sauce. The Veggie dish was sauteed to perfection. All the desserts were awesome. Our service was very good and we were greeted by a delightful hostess. A note on the Risotto - It was cooked to perfection! Pairing all this with a nice glass of Chianti made for a terrific lunch. Nice job, folks! R.E. Gohn

In town on business and was looking for a non chain local restaurant serving itialian and found Umbertos Itialian Grill. Let me say that service was great and the quality of our dinners were great. I had the Shrimp Umbertos and it was outstanding! My friend ordered spaghetti with pomodor sauce and shrimp and he was pleased. We'll be back when we are in town.

Happy Find

By Karen C |

My family was visiting San Antonio, and the kids wanted pasta for lunch. Umberto’s happened to be the closest Italian restaurant, and we really lucked out. Our server Benjamin was attentive without hovering, and the food was delicious. We had the beef lasagna, chicken parm, fettuccine Alfredo, and margarita pizza.

Great place & better food.

By Mathew G |

We're from out of town & on vacation. We like some of the Italian chains but Umberto's was close to our hotel & had very good reviews. The restaurant is open & modern & not afraid to have a little noise. It was well lit & the staff was well dressed & neat. Our waitress gave us some suggestions & we decided on pizza & ravioli for the kids, I had a special shrimp with stuffed jumbo shells in a vodka sauce, and the wife had chicken parmesan. We started with some very nice salads with the house dressing. Not just lettuce but had carrots cucumbers & tomato. The pizza was no thin wispy barely there pizza. It had a great crust & cheese. There were no complaints from the beef ravioli either. The wife's chicken parmesan was HUGE & tasty. She shared some & still had leftovers. My shrimp & shells was great. The shrimp were perfectly cooked. The sauce did not overwhelm them. The shells were stuffed with cheese & some mushrooms & peppers I believe. Great blend of flavors. It also came with broccoli with a lemony butter sauce also perfectly crisp & tender @ the same time.

Good food—but not sure I’ll go back

By travlingirl63 |

Our party of 4 was there for lunch. The food was good, but I wanted to change pastas from angel hair to linguini—an additional charge of $1.50 was not told to me at the time of the order. Also, I asked for a little extra marinara sauce—additional $1.50. When I asked about these the owner got a little snippy. This is bush league !!!

On my list of “must do”s when visiting San Antonio

By Hatcher08 |

5 stars without question! I was seated right away. Chicken Marsala came with asparagus, side salad and spaghetti in olive oil. They also brought complimentary rolls, butter and cheese. I ate half of everything and was stuffed! Who can turn down their amazing desserts though? Creme brûlée? Tiramisu? Cannoli? Cheesecake? And al home made? Yum! I went for the cheesecake and it did not disappoint. My waiter was attentive but didn’t hover. Perfect. This is going on my list of “must do”s whenever I’m in San Antonio.

Best Italian food in san antonio

This food was so good, I couldn't wait to write a review. A quaint little restaurant, great service. I wish everyone knew about this place. The prices are reasonable and the portions are large. Do yourself a favor..... GO! Let the menu speak for itself.

A delightful evening

Visited with a group of 20 and was very impressed with this restaurant, the food and the service. I had the Veal Piccata (a first time for me) and loved it. You must try their Sweet Baby wines. I had the white, and they also have red. Very mild, sweet and fruity. I loved it so much I brought home a bottle.

Underwhelmed Italian

By mikeholen |

Cute place, great service, bla food. Tasteless and undercooked. Had high expectations based on reviews but had bland, overpriced, doughy pasta dishes. The food has no flavor which is sad because the staff tries hard,

Great find!

By s2mc |

We were staying near Sea World and looking for something nearby - no chains, please. We stumbled across Umberto's on a couple of review sites and decided to give it a try. Great decision! This small restaurant is in an unassuming strip center, but, inside, it is pleasantly relaxing - white walls, black tablecloths, dark wood, with relaxing music piped in. We visited on a Tuesday night and it was uncrowded and we were seated immediately. The only drawback was that we were by the window and the parking lot lights were shining in our eyes from some seats. Our server immediately greeted us with some wonderfully garlicly bruschetta and a smile. We ordered the mussels as an appetizer - our teenager adores them - while we perused the menu. It is simple and straightforward at 2 pages, and some items are available as either appetizers or entrees. Prices are very reasonable. Our mussels arrived with house-made rolls and both were quite good. We normally prefer a white wine sauce with mussels, but this tomato-based one was almost addictive. Our server told us that evrerything was freshly made in house, including the pasta. Predictably, spouse ordered lasagna as an entree, teen got the fettucini alfredo, and I wasn't totally hungry, so I went for an appetizer of the eggplant parmesan and the small Umberto salad. Note that entrees come with soup or house salad and spouse and I told the server that we would share the salad, but there was an upcharge for the change to the Umberto. The servings for everything were quite large and we could have easily split any of them, including my appetizer, but everything did, indeed, taste quite fresh. The fettucini unexpectedly contained chicken, which was a nice, unexpected addition, and the lasagna revealed a pleasant restraint with the tomato sauce. The eggplant was a little too hidden in my dish, but it was still good. Overall, this was a great find and we will return again on our next SA trip. However, we'll probably split entrees so that we can save room for the house-made desserts!

Great night

Great visit to this little restaurant. Had the beef ravioli, it was delicious. Service was great, they kept my water glass filled. Would recommend if on this side of town. (It is in the strip mall with Fast Eddies and the address of the street is spelled "Culebra")

Top Notch Italian food in San Antonio

Top notch Italian food. Everything we ordered was yummy and very affordable. Service was great. Staff were friendly and informative. Would highly recommend.

Very nice lunch

By Kathryn B |

Our son recommended this restaurant for lunch. We were seated quickly and our waiter was fast and courteous. My husband ordered lasagna which was very meaty inside and a large portion. He enjoyed it. Our son ordered a spinach ravioli in cream sauce. Ok that's what I'm getting next time. It was delicious!!! And a very large portion. Thank goodness or I may have eaten it all. Lol. I had a grilled chicken salad. Trying to be good on my diet. Didn't work with that ravioli. It was a very pleasant experience.

Some of the best Italian meals in San Antonio. The pasta is done to perfection rarely found in Italian meals. Every serving of pasta is done al dente, not over-cooked as is so often found in Italian restaurants. The sauces are properly seasoned and do not overpower the flavor of the meat. Ambiance is somewhat lacking due to lights being too bright.

NICE NEIGHBORHOOD RESTAURANT

By CSHL43 |

When traveling through San Antonio, we always have dinner here and never disappointed. The Caesar salad is very good and their meat sauce is great. Entrees are very generous....BUT what made our dinner even better was our server, Gerard. Make sure you ask for him.

Wonderful Italian Food

This is a hidden gem. Friends recommended this restaurant and it was excellent. It is located in a strip mall. The restaurant is pleasant and very clean. The food was delicious and very generous servings. The staff is very nice. We took friends for their anniversary and we all enjoyed the food and will certainly go back.

Good!

By momdadkidsTexas |

It didn’t start out well, as our nice but bumbling hostess tried to seat us next to the bathroom in a literally half empty restaurant. When we refused, she tried to seat us at a table literally about an inch from a constantly swinging kitchen door. When we refused that one too, she had us sit and wait for about 15 minutes for the next available table. She was sweet and apologetic, but we didn’t understand that one. We almost left but were tired. But overall, it was a nice experience. The waiter was fine and the shrimp Umberto was downright yummy. But folks, let’s figure out these logistical issues.

Molto bene!

Made a quick trip to San Antonio with out-of-state relatives who wanted to visit Sea World, and stumbled across Umberto's. As soon as we were seated, a waiter arrived with a complimentary little nosh for the table, two plates of delightful bruschetta hungrily snarfed down by our youngest. We ordered a variety of items which included the eggplant lasagna, chicken Gorgonzola and a full pizza. The portions are very large, but everything tastes so wonderfully that you will over eat. I took my left-overs with me and enjoyed them, cold, at the hotel later that evening. They were just as delicious then, too! We had a little trouble finding them as our directions led us to Culebra Rd, but they are in the middle of a strip mall. Just look for a packed parking lot and you'll find them.

Great Service, OK Food

By Dave C |

We were here for my father-in-law's fathers day celebration, as it's his favorite place. Very traditional Italian-American food from the 1960s and 1970s with some other items such as fish. The lasagna was quite traditional with the bechamel or similar sauce along with the red sauce, and was good, and well-portioned. Both of the fish dishes were overcooked, although both said their sauce, sides, and shrimp were cooked well. Go if you're nostalgic or just watched "Big Night" and want to know how the food was at Pascal's. Service is great, and they do offer a veteran's discount. The table service/servers are very good. Service for four was a reasonable $113.00.

First time

By L H |

A friend suggested this restaurant to several of us and although none of us live in this area we decided to try it for lunch during the week. It is located at the corner of Culebra Rd. and Ingram Rd. in a small, outdated shopping center. You cannot see it from Culebra but the name is on a corner sign and once you pull into the center you can locate it. We were there before 11:30 and seated quickly and easily. We did notice some of the tables had the tops peeling off of them which wasn't very attractive. Otherwise, the place looked clean. Considering the place settings nicely set out you would expect tablecloths though. Especially to cover the peeling table tops and to compliment the settings and atmosphere. They offered three lunch specials the day we visited and each was $10 and included soup or salad. The lunch menu items, not the specials, are around $13 and also came with soup or salad. The lunch plates were generous servings in both the mixed green salad and the entrees. The chicken piccata was enjoyed by several and was two thin breasts served with pasta, carrots and broccoli. One of the specials was Linguini Scampi and it was just perfect with lots of pasta and nice size shrimp. All were pleased with the food and the beverage person was very attentive in refilling our glasses. The wine was $7 for a glass with a good poor. It didn't take long for the place to become completely filled during the lunch hour. There were several large groups but the noise level was acceptable. They also have a large event room which is separate from the main dining area. The bathrooms were a little dated but clean. There is a long bar, which I assume serves all types of drinks but we didn't order any mixed drinks. Just passing by this place you would not expect it to serve such delicious, appealing food and might not try it BUT my suggestion would be to give it a try. The decor/ambiance doesn't quite match the fine dining level of the food which all enjoyed.

Almost in Italy!

Wow, what a wonderful find in San Antonio. Neighborhood place with authentic, homemade Italian food. Staff was wonderful, portions large and great prices. Couldn't ask for more!

Dinner Party

By BigTex1947 |

Umberto's Italian Restaurant is located on Culebra just north of Loop 410. We had a dinner party of 12 people and had made reservation. Our table was ready when we arrived and were cheerfully greeted by the wait staff. They have a limited wine and beer list, but was adequate for our party. The menu had a very good selection of Italian fare and modest prices. The food and service were both excellent and I highly recommend Umberto's for lunch or dinner.

Wonderful Veal, Minestrone Soup - Nah

By Napunani |

Terrific food, good service and reasonable prices - certainly a strip mall hidden gem that we'll be dining at often! I read about this restaurant through a FACEBOOK Restuarant Group and we were dining here 2 days later! The Group absolutely made a good call on Umberto's! We were informed by a family member server that this a family-owned/operated restaurant that has been operating here for 8 years. We arrived around 530pm Friday without reservations and we were just ahead of the crowds! We started with calamari which was very good. Hubby and I both ordered veal dishes and they were WONDERFUL. Served with either soup or salad, asparagus and spaghetti. I had the minestrone soup and was very disappointed as it was mostly cabbage. Hubby had a huge salad!

Good dinner

We arrived in town to visit a friend and he suggested we try here. I called ahead and they took my name down and said a table would be waiting for us. I was quite pleased-so many restaurants don't do this anymore. They offer a wide menu with many choices. We all had been craving pasta, we order 3 different dishes so we could sample each other's. Their marinara sauce was fresh, flavorfull and tasty. Our waiter was helpful and checked on us often, despite being busy on a Friday night.

The location is a bit of a problem with very limited parking . The food is above average for such a location and is well priced.

Great Italian fare near Sea World

By tripree |

Our son found this place based on Google reviews. As others have commented, it's in a strip mall in a very busy part of town. Starched linen tableclothes and a clean, tasteful interior make up for location. As soon as were seated, a small plate of bruschetta greeted us. Small dice marinated tomato accompanied by toasted French bread crisps were delicious! Salads are piled high with fresh greens- no iceberg lettuce in sight, thank goodness, and dressed with a light, tasty vinaigrette. Entrees came not long after salads were finished. All four were delicious. Linguini with clams brought tender clams in the shell, as well as chopped clams atop a delicious white wine broth. Yum! Others in my party thoroughly enjoyed their entrees as well; chicken parmesan, fettuccine alfredo with chicken and lasagna. Yeast rolls are delicious as well and house pinot grigio was crisp, light and tasty. Would definitely eat here again.

Great home made real Italian food

By martin c |

They are actually on "culebra " just outside of loop 410 . What can I say ! You are going to be a regular soon . This place rocks . Great portions and a lot better than the "olive place " . Plus , the bread is way better here . Way better food quality and faster svc hands down ! This is a family restaurant with big time taste . The salads are always fresh and the entrees are all great tasting . I recommend the chicken griglia . You will take some home , I promise . Why spend the same 9 or ten bucks on a burger for lunch when you can get a real meal deal here .

Great place to eat prior to the theater. All the meals were well above the average. Service was exceptional even as busy as they were. House salad dressing is one of the best. Pappardella in vodka sauce was a big hit.

It's a gem!

By Linda B |

This is a small, family owned and operated restaurant. The food was excellent and plentiful. The salad was fresh. The service was great! And to make it even better, the price was low compared to the other Italian restaurant chains in San Antonio. We will be back!

Delicious!

By Lisa M |

My son, husband and I found Umberto’s by chance while visiting nearby. We were so glad we gave it a try! Our waiter was very helpful and did a great job. The restaurant itself is in a small strip mall and very unassuming. But the food was wonderful! We were given a plate of crostini with chopped tomatoes with herbs in oil. It was delicious. We were also given very soft rolls with our salads. The salads were not just plain iceberg lettuce. They were mixed fresh greens with carrots, red onion and tomatoes. We tried the blue cheese dressing which was a light, non creamy version and quite light and delicious. For entrees, my son ordered a pizza which was big enough for 3-4 people! He enjoyed it very much. My husband and I got the chicken Gorgonzola and chicken Francesca. Both were huge servings and fabulous. There was also plenty of sauce for sopping up with those rolls. Everything about the meal was great. Our one regret is we had no room for dessert!

Great!

By sandrarM3672HG |

The food is awesome here. The food runners/bussers are on point with filling up your drinks often. You will never go thirsty..lol. I love the hat/purse racks at every table. Instead of bread as an appetitzer they have 4 little bruschettas:)

We were in San Antonio and remembered a great Italian restaurant we dined at years ago. We couldn't find it, but saw that Umberto's had a good Tripadvisor rating, so we gave it a try. The place was not fancy, but very nice; our server, Dallas, was charming, helpful, and knowledgeable, and the rest of the wait staff was wonderfully attentive. We ordered the Fruitti de la Mare and the spaghetti with meat sauce. Both portions were HUGE and very well prepared. Each came with the soup of the day or a house salad (which was larger than expected). The food was served with parmesan cheese and small, garlic-buttered rolls. As others have said, the little complimentary brushcetta was a nice touch, and the tables even had little "hat" racks (for purse or coat or who knows what - see photo). Dallas tempted us with freshly made crème brulee, but we had so much food that we just got to-go boxes to put in the fridge at the hotel. The linquine with shrimp, clams, calamari was great, but I would order the red sauce next time instead of the garlic white sauce. Price was very reasonable for the amount of food we received.

Very Pleased

We stumbled across this gem for lunch while in San Antonio for our family vacation. Food was excellent as was the service. Large portions at a great price. If we ever come back we will definitely be visiting Umberto’s again. We have been in San Antonio for 6 days and this was the best meal we have had this far. Well worth the visit.

Excellent!

Grew up in the northeast and married and Italian so I know great Italian food. And this is great. Wonderful service. Got to visit with owner and they love what they do.

Treat yourself to some great Italian

They are on "culebra" rd . This place is consistently great . I choose this whenever I am in the area . The family staff always knock themselves out both in the front and back of the restaurant . The sisters and mom work up front while the dad does his magic in the kitchen . The salads are always fresh ... No buckets on the table here ... Plus their bread tastes better too . The plates are priced several dollars lower than you would expect for the quality you get . It gets a little busy at lunch but they still stay on top of things . The portions are pretty big . Where else can you go and get complimentary breshetta , bread and then get a nice salad before your fresh prepared meal for 10 bucks ?? Make it a point to try this place . Near Ingram and C u l e b r a. Road .

An average Italian restaurant with potential to be very good!

We had reservations for 4 people at 7 pm and arrived at 6:50 pm. The hostess sat us fairly quickly but we didn't see our waiter for almost 10 min. He seemed to be rushed during our entire visit; maybe too many tables he had to wait on? We had questions about the wine list & he was not knowledgable about any of the wines so he could not answer our questions. We ordered wine anyway & our server wanted to take salad orders. We told him would like to wait until we received our wine. Also had to ask if they had bread to eat with our wine. We received our salad course very quickly and we had only taken 1 or 2 bites when another server arrived with our main courses. We refused and asked if they could bring back when we finished our salads. They did so reluctantly and returned with our main course about 5 minutes later indicating they had to serve us now. Our table was small & we didn't have room for both salad & dinner plates so we gave our not-finished salads back so they could serve our main course. The rest of the evening it seemed like we were being rushed; constantly "hounded" to see if we needed to order dessert or needed our checks. The restaurant was busy & they had people waiting in the lobby. They were treating us like "hurry up and finish so we can seat new customers". Overall, the food was not bad (maybe a C+) but the poor service really ruined this dining experience. Probably won't be back or recommend to our friends.

good neighborhood italian

There location is unassuming but over time the quality has improved. The service can be slow if it is crowded. Entree selection is very good. One drawback is the noise level which makes it hard to hear.

A Hidden Gem!

We absolutely love Umberto's! It is a fantastic bang for your buck. No where else in San Antonio can you get authentic Italian food with complementary bread, salad, and Bruchetta. Their service is great and much of the menu is excellent but you have to know what to order. I repeat: YOU HAVE TO KNOW WHAT TO ORDER. For a few months my husband was working nights while I was working days, Umbertos was perfectly locates for us to meet up have our Friday date then go our separate ways. During that time we were able to try much of their menu. We never tried their pizza but we found the best dishes to be the Farfalle creamy pasta, the cheese ravioli with white sauce, sun dried tomatoes and spinach(they only serve it this way at lunch so be sure to ask for it), their pasta Umberto's and their shrimp Umberto's appetizer. We also tried their chicken parm but were not impressed. We have also had some friends try their pizza they too came away disenchanted. Stick with their mixed pastas (pastas where all the fix ins are mixed in with the noodles and the sauce) and you should be good. It really is worth your time!

A hidden treasure

The restaurant seems to be hidden in a strip center. Once your inside, it offer great atmosphere. We had a birthday luncheon setup for 10 people. The service was wonderful and so was the food. To start you are given brochetta's - crispy bread and herb tomatoes. The salad was big for a lunch salad and very fresh they also offer a soup of the day if salad is not your thing. We tasted many iems on the lunch menu. At our table we enjoyed Chicken Picatta, Eggplant Parmegiano, Chicken Parmegiano, and Beef Lasagna. The Stromboli was large enough to share. Everyone raved about the dish they chose. We did not have any drinks from the bar, but I am looking forward to coming back and try some of the dinner menu items and drinks.

Best Italian Food

We have always had great food here. The brushetta is excellent. Chicken Marsala is one of my favorites. We have met the owners and they made us feel we were really appreciated as customers. Forget Olive Garden and come to Umbertos!

First time

By Mercedes6623 |

A few ago, I called to make reservations, just in case we needed them. I had seen the reviews online and been told by a few people that it was a newer but very good Italian restaurant. When I did not see a wine list at the website, I called to ask what the corkage fees might be. She didn't know. I asked if I could bring in our own wine, which many restaurants do allow. She left to ask someone. She told me that, if we brought in our own bottle of wine, the restaurant would charge $20. I was very surprised; however, I came to the conclusion that the restaurant does not encourage bringing in wine. First of all, it was not a great night to visit the restaurant. We saw a family outside of the restaurant, as we were walking in. A little girl was having a bad day and was crying loudly. Her mother wanted her to put her shoes on; she was refusing. Unfortunately, they entered the restaurant a few minutes later, with the crying child. During their time in the restaurant, the little girl was either crying, screaming, or playing with the decorations in the foyer of the restaurant. I realize that everyone has the right to go to any restaurant. Perhaps she could have calmed the child down before entering. It went on for a good portion of our meal. The waiter, although helpful, seemed in a hurry to get our order in to the kitchen. I asked for club soda. They only have Pellegrino. We wanted to taste the wine in order to make a decision. There is only one type of wine sold. This brand comes in Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Cabernet, Merlot and Chianti. They also offer two sweet wines, from the one winery. I sampled a few of them. I would never order them again. I guess we will be ordering tea or sodas the next time. As to the food, it is very good. We ordered the calamari friti. It was tender and nicely crisp; however, it needed salt and a little spice. The marinara sauce is good. We asked for red pepper flakes to spice it up. The waiter asked if we wanted to order when we asked for the calamari. In a few minutes, he brought the salad that comes with the meals. It has a delicious, creamy Italian dressing. It is too bad we did not get a chance to finish it. The meal came only a few minutes after our salad. I brought my salad home. The first thing you realize is that the portions are very generous. The plates, although beautiful, have a different shape and, if you try to balance your knife on the plate, it falls off. My husband ordered the eggplant Parmesan and really enjoyed it. He said the eggplant was lightly breaded and the marinara sauce, although somewhat sweet, was good. He chose spaghetti instead of risotto. Our friend ordered Chicken Francesca and also raved about the sauce. The plate came with a few lovely stalks of asparagus. I chose the Chicken Griglia, which has a basil aioli sauce. It was good and the risotto was very creamy. It was enough to bring home a good portion. When I asked about dessert, the waiter told us that they are made in-house. My husband ordered the cannoli and I ordered the tiramisu. Both were delicious! We now know how to order. Make sure to let the wait staff know that you are not on your way to a race.

It's ok

I've been here 3 times this year - not by choice but I have friends that like this place. I think that their food is not that great. I've tried a few different plates and I was not impressed. However, they do have great appetizers such as the stuffed mushrooms. I have tried the lasagna and was not impressed. I always feel like you can learn a lot about a place by trying their lasagna. I will say that this place is good for parties or get togethers because they have the space to put everyone on a long table (20-25 people) They will also make sure you have 2 serves. Like I said it's just not my style of Italian food but other people seem to like it. If it wasn't for these family parties I would never return.

Best Italian restaurant

Went for a luncheon with 35 people. They had no problem handling the orders and food came out Hot and tasted fantastic. There were no complaints. Went for dinner two more times and both were fantastic. Would recommend this to anyone.

Beyond our expectations

This is our second time ordering delivery as the chicken piccata is out of this world. We have tried other dishes too and everything melts in our mouths. Coming from a Sicilian Italian, this is 10 star place to learn and eat real Italian food. Can’t wait to stop by the restaurant to see the atmosphere that is positively raved about too.

Delicious!

My husband and I got takeout here and I could not get over how delicious everything was! We had the lasagna and the meat sauce spaghetti, with salads. Would definitely recommend!

Great hole in the wall Italian

By JasonTuggle |

Great hole in the wall Italian food! We were in town for our anniversary and wanted to find something close by. We tried umbertos and were pleasantly surprised. We had the mussels for an appetizer and the marinara was homemade and very good. My wife has the beef ravioli and I had the chicken Gorgonzola. Both were really good. I would definitely come back.

Stick-Up-Charges a Hazard

By OmniEpicurean |

There are so many restaurants now that are esconced in non-descript shopping or business centers like some cloistered nun. I had seen the opening announcement for Umberto's when it first came out sometime ago, but promptly forgot it since it is a rather inconvenient drive. However, we were up for a little adventure. The blaring music sometimes Italian, sometimes Mexican cantata was a little distracting, but seemed to go with the sleek and minimal modern decor that is a common in many restaurants now. I think we might understand how the Titanic sunk if our waiter had been the communications officer on the ship. With every question we asked, we found more and more that knowledge and therefore service was not going to be the forte here. Not knowing the dishes can really be distracting when it requires numerous trips back to the kitchen to ask questions about entree sourcing, the number of and count of shrimp on the dish (the "U" number is a common method of relating the number of shrimp per pound - the waiter had never heard of this) etc. There were a litany of "I'll find outs"and a growing uneasiness that this lunch was going to be a real boondoggle. Training must be non-existent for the hired help! Next my wife asked for heavy or extra sauce on her shrimp Umberto and I had a sneaking suspicion which prompted me to ask if there would be an up charge. The answer was "yes, $1.50".. That received a "never mind" response. The same request was made relative to the Caesar salad and a heavy on the dressing request with the same outcome; "yes, $.50) followed by the same response. I absolutely abhor restaurants that subscribe to the ultra-annoying practice of nipping at the customer with these chintzy little up charges on normally no charge accouterments.. They are irksome at best. If need be, raise the general pricing structure to acommodate costs, but don't incessantly ding the customer for these little ancillary charges! With further trepidation, we placed our order for salads, shrimp umberto, and one of the daily specials, ribeye in crimini demi-glace. We were first served an appetizer of toast with a chopped tomato and garlic topping which was unique and savory (and complimentary!). And as there were no Coke products as the menu specifically proclaimed, we both selected tea which was a cloudy, dreary glass of dark liquid that did not taste the freshest even after replacement. More foreshadowing? The caesar and house salads were bright, fresh, and welcoming to the eye and palate. What's going on?! Hot little golf ball sized rolls and whipped butter were also a nice surprise as we had thought about asking for bread earlier, but were a little gun shy after the sauce and dressing requests. The shrimp Umberto arrived with 4 shrimp after we had been told the serving contained 5. Were we surprised . . .Though both entrees were plated in an eye appealing manner, our expectations had been set for the doldrums. O frabjoud day, callooh. callay! The shrimp were fresh, the buttery lemon sauce a tongue pleaser , the broccoli al dente and the risotto as smooth as butter with a hint of tartness. The ribeye was thin and cooked well (versus the medium I had requested (head in hands) which made it a little dusty only to be revived by the fresh mushrooms and the rich demi-glace, a sauce that is not used nearly enough anymore. Veggies and rosemary potato wedges were nicely done. So, after fractured service via lack of menu knowledge, then a deep recovery with some noteworthy dishes, along came another roller coaster of gastronomic sinusoidal undulation with the following; don't ask for substitutions like I did with wanting angel hair pasta instead of potatoes. This chef no-can-do or else chooses not too. Not even for an up charge! Heavens! We had no dessert, but the icing on the cake was the bill and a clandestine $2 up charge for getting the Caesar salad instead of the house. Can you say exasperation!!

Very nice, tasty Italian in San Antonio

By buck000ta |

(Note: the restaurant is on Culebra Rd, not Celebrate) Don't be deceived by the strip-mall location. Umberto's provided some very tasty food. My wife and I both had the house salad. The house Italian dressing was very flavorful.. I then had the veal marsala, which was good, but the surprise of the evening was the linguini with white clam sauce for my wife. It came with a ton of clams, and the sauce was excellent. We finished with a very good tiramisu. We were very happy with the meal, as well as with the service. Well done!

Small out-of-the-way restaurant with excellent food. It is located on the west side of San Antonio near loop 410. Both the Chicken Francese and the Egg Plant Parmigiana were excellent. The meal comes with a house garden salad with a very good house dressing. Nice background music and no loud kitchen and dining room noise, as seems to be so common now days.

El cheapo's

The food was good, the service was good.....when I saw the bill for 'sauce on my pasta' I was pissed....they said that they don't put sauce on pasta because 'that's the way they serve it... with only butter and oil...that's a lot of bull....when is the last time you went to an Italian restaurant and they charged $4.00 extra for sauce on your pasta?? This is ridiculous..... It's not the $4.00...we can definitely afford it...it's the principal...my wife and I will never go there again.

Excellent.,

Fantastic Food

Ate here tonight with a large group. The food was AMAZING. It started with small complimentary bruschetta and bread for everyone. I ordered the soup of the day which was a chicken pasta...so good! I had Chicken Marsala as my main and it was also excellent. Others had lasagna, pizza and stuffed shells to name a few. All were delicious and portion sizes were plentiful.

Great Italian Neighborhood Restaurant

First, let's get the address right- 7616 CULEBRA ROAD. It's farthest from Culebra so you have to look for it! The food, service and atmosphere are all superb. Fresh, carefully prepared food are at the top. All of the menu items are tremendous, but there's a secret...the sausage is remarkable! Try it, you'll love it. And that goes for everything about this neighborhood gem!
