Must visit

By Travel_ATL |

I took my wife for our anniversary in August. This is one of the premier Japanese restaurants in Atlanta. I had a reservation and the hostess called and confirmed my reservation one day ahead. And she stated that they have a straight dress code: no sports outfit, baseball caps, gym shorts, etc. We arrived early and we were the first customer of the day. They looked very busy preparing for the evening rush hour (it's on a Saturday). Once we sat down we were greeted right away. We looked over our menu and order a bunch of food. The food comes out in order - appetizers, main dishes, and then desert. You don't get the food all come out at the same time, as they time the food so you would have one after another. the food quality is excellent and the service is exceptional. By the time we were waiting for our desert, the place was packed. Overall everything is what I expected - excellent Japanese foods, great service and a great evening.

Expensive...but Exquisite

By Max S |

I've enjoyed sushi for a long time, in many different locales and at varying price ranges. Umi is at the top in every way. It is quite pricey but I feel it is justified. The stuff is flown in from all over fresh, but that's not what is special about the cuisine. A lot of your mid-range sushi joints will pile up stuff on a roll until it's just too much and you can't decipher the flavors. Umi is the antithesis of that. Clean, fresh, delicious and with brilliant artistry. Haven't had anything I didn't love. Excellent service. A true gem!

Unbelievable!!

By Juliana N |

It felt like eating a piece of art. Every single plate was very nicely done and the taste, OMG!!! Once we ate here it’s hard to eat sushi anywhere else.

Buzzy place!!

By redrum777 |

This restaurant has a very buzzy vibe to it quite noisy so if you want a secluded quiet meal look elsewhere. The food was very good well cooked and presented very well. The service was very good. All in all a very nice place to have sushi ect. I would recommend a visit if in the area.

Some of the best sushi

By Jhony J |

After asking several people for the best sushi spot I was told this was the place, and it was. The sushi here was some of the best I've had, and I love sushi, sitting at the sushi bar is highly recommended, that way you can have the sushi chef prepare special pieces that isn't available on the menu, the wagyu sushi and yellowtail with caviar my favorites, must try.

Outstanding sushi in an elegant setting

By Matthew J |

Umi has a very nice ambiance- a bit crowded but lively. The service was prompt and very helpful as our server gave us very thoughtful dining suggestions. Also the food was brought out in sequence rather than all out once which enhanced the experience. The highlights were the Spicy Tuna Crispy Rice, the fantastic salmon nigiri, the Rock Shrimp Tempura and the Tuna and Foie Gras. The fish was of extremely high quality and delicious. I would recommend studying the menu before arriving although our server helped us order a terrific meal. Dining was pricey but well worth it. I highly recommend this restaurant.

Pricey Perfection

By hhstokes |

Being an upscale restaurant in Buckhead doesn't guarantee great food... Umi delivers. It was a vibrant atmosphere with a warm eclectic décor. Our server couldn't have been more helpful and knew about Sake of all types which are almost as varied as other wines. The appetizers were small but enough to share a bite with 4 people. We order a lot to try and to share which was perfect for my first time since I wanted to try everything.

expensive, but worth it

By Manager V |

Been to a lot if nice sushi restaurants. This was number one or two to a Nobu. Really, really good. A little crowded and loud, but not terrible. Service was very good - helpful, polite, and knowledgable. Expensive - almost $1,000 for four people, but worth it. Otoro caviar dish was amazing. Japanese uni was also great. Highly recommend. Have a reservation.

Delicious!!!

By Adrianne W |

Really delicious sushi. Loved the spicy tuna over krispy rice appetizer. The avocado salad is very small but really good. Wasabi vinaigrette is excellent. The fish is very fresh. Wish I lived closer so we could go back and try more.

Miyabi omakase for four

By Edgarem |

Ate here on a Thursday evening in late April 2021, group of four. We had made our reservation for 6:45. Arrived a little before 6:00 but were seated promptly at a small table near the bar. The restaurant wasn't crowded but grew more so as the night went on. Our server was Paul, who did a good job explaining the menu and drink options, as well as (with the help of his coworkers) keeping the courses coming promptly. We never had to wait for the next plate. They gave each of us our own unique appetizer to try, so we shared them tapas style. My favorite was the yellowtail jalapeno...the heat from the peppers was significant enough to notice but not overpowering. You can find more detailed descriptions of the menu items in other reviews, but highlights for us included the rock shrimp tempura, sashimi plate, and nigiri assortment. Portion sizes were adequate but not generous. I was still a little hungry when we left, which was disappointing considering the price. Our waiter told us the sake carafe would be about 180 mL, but in reality it was maybe 120 (two small cups for two people). I'm sure the atmosphere and cachet are included in the price as well. As someone who has traveled (and eaten) extensively across Japan over the years, the big question for me was: how does this compare to sushi restaurants there? Quality-wise, it's as good as you're likely to find in the United States, but would be fairly run-of-the-mill among midlevel sushi places in Tokyo (not necessarily a bad thing). I read a review where somebody said that the food at Umi is "a little too fusion", and I understand how sushi purists would be put off by gilding-the-lily moves such as aioli and caviar on otoro and wagyu. Dishes like the rock shrimp tempura, while delicious, would fit on the menu of pretty much any Asian or seafood restaurant anywhere. But the price, however difficult for most to countenance save the most special of special occasions, certainly beats a plane ticket to Japan, especially during these days of pandemic-related travel bans. Price for four, including drinks and tax but not tip, came to $167.75 per person.

Good but not exceptional

By Will |

We went on a very busy saturday night, and had a table which was meant to be outdoors but it was in fact a room which was slightly open, but very light and airy. We thought it was much nicer than inside where it is very dark. Some tables inside seemed really uncomfortable and not nice. Overall dinner was very reliable and similar to Nobu style, but we felt it was slightly less delicious than the best in class Japanese restaurants. I wouldn’t say it was exceptional, I would say it was good, and portions are slightly smaller than normal. Prices are high in line with what you would expect. The owners are clearly making a fortune, and they are the real winners here….

Great experience

Atmosphere is lovely. We had great food and drinks , couldn't ask for more. I will return , especially if entertaining and looking to impress!

The Best Sushi On Earth

By 5starmonkey |

This place gets a huge 5 Star... the food, the food, the crowd. Amazing and interesting selections and tons you'll want to try but beware... your eyes are bigger than your stomach. You'll need a few visits to be able to have all of the awesome selections off their menu or go in super hungry... there are so many great choices, it's tough to narrow it down. We decided to pace ourselves and kept adding stuff as we went forward... yes, we got full quickly and all left smiling and thinking of the next time we would be back and what we would order. Honestly, there is so many excellent things on the menu... I can't list them all. If you go, let the server guide you through where you'll be happy and full and get to try some amazing stuff. You'll agree, this place rocks sushi like nobody else! Can't wait to go again... Enjoy!

Move Over Nobu!

By Nikalodian |

Simply amazing to the palate and an experience that leaves you hoping to come back. A must for anyone living in Atlanta or visiting. Of course, Umi is expensive - along the same lines as Nobu. So, it is not going to be a place to go often for most. Business travelers and celebrity sightings are common here. Consider asking the server to work with the Chef to organize your culinary adventure.

Dinner

By sanamchiney |

Forget Nobu, this is much better. Service is spectacular, food is fresh and amazing. I am never dissatisfied with this place. Great ambiance, high quality seafood, desserts to die for, and yum yum yum. This place is usually packed so make reservations far in advance.

BEST SUSHI IN ATLANTA

By DAWG92 |

Chef Ito is AMAZING!!! Hands down the BEST sushi in Atlanta. Super fresh, awesome presentation, the texture and flavor and temperature that sushi was created to be correctly served.

Need more stars

By Pablo T |

Went to celebrate anniversary and could not have had a better experience. The atmosphere is super-hip, you can remove the tables and turn the place into an amazing bar! I have no words to describe the sushi. Every bite of the OMAKASE was a festival of flavors. Finally, the service was simply stellar. Our waitress (I can't remember her name, Shachria, maybe?) ensured we had the best experience, worth every penny. Kudos to Farshid Arshid and his team for Umi, I will definitely return!

Ambiance, People Watching, Food

By ChattaNelly |

I loved this restaurant. I was a solo traveler and could not have had a better waiter than mine. The people watching is as good as the food! I cannot wait to go back. The sushi and cooked entrees were all amazing. The only thing I would skip next time is the dessert.

How delicious

By Quentin P |

We had a fantastic meal. I am only writing this review because of the kobe nigiri specialty. We ordered this on a whim as our last dish, and I wish I had gotten ten. It was fantastic. Everything we had was delicious, but the kobe and otara nigiri were delightful! Please try them!!! Our server was awesome and really helped us navigate the menu. Our magnanimous meal was due totally to her suggestions and attitude.

Too Dark to Read Menu

By Allen S |

I will start this with I DID NOT eat any food. When we arrived the seated almost immediately with a reservation. It was so dark in the main dining room that we COULD NOT read the menu, not even enough to order an appetizer. I’m 32, so it’s not like I’m blind yet. It is the type of place that using the flashlight on your phone seems out of place and frowned upon. We opted to leave and headed to the next closest place that we could read the menu.

Great food, obnoxious front of house staff, loud and crowded space

By Sally Stegeman F |

The food was undeniably excellent, but I've eaten at a ton of highly rated sushi restaurants with far less accompanying attitude about reservations and from front of house staff. Glad I went once, but don't feel this is someplace you go more than once. I was part of a party of six people in town on business, and when making the reservation, they required that they send me a contract via email guaranteeing that our party would be six people and verifying that if any fewer came we'd be charged $75/person. Had to sign and return before being able to confirm the reservation. I've NEVER experienced this before and found the practice obnoxious. As obnoxious as that were the attitudes of the front of house staff...children...who somehow have been convinced that working there is the highest of privileges. Full disclosure that only one other person in my party was similarly turned off by this. We did however all comment about constantly being rubbed up against due to the tight space and inability to hear the person across the table due to noise. Is the food excellent? Absolutely. Choose your poison!

Terrible

By Brad G |

Service was bad. Sushi was just okay. Not worth the bad parking situation. There are a lot of better places in close proximity.

Yummy Umi

By Natalia K |

Hands down, best sushi restaurant in Atlanta. After living in New York for 8 years then Beijing and Hong Kong for 6 months, I was spoiled by some of the best and freshest sushi in the world. So when a friend recommended Umi Sushi in Bulkhead I was hopeful.. but cautious. I'm not the kind of person who gets "sold" on places that are hard to get into. I prefer to avoid "battling" for my spot in a restaurant chair. I'm glad I didn't avoid this one. My taste buds were in heaven. Highly recommended.

Sushi adventure

By Deborah T |

We sat at the sushi bar and placed ourselves in the very capable hands of Chef Ito. His creations were exquisite! Beautiful to look at as well as absolutely delicious. The fish selections came from all over the world and were of top quality and freshness.

Sushi in Buckhead

By James C |

After a day of sightseeing in Atlanta, we wanted to have a special sushi dinner. My wife found Umi in Buckhead. The restaurant was hopping on a Monday night. We started with a seared tuna salad and a snapper tartare. Both were delicious. For the main course we shared some sushi rolls. The fish was fresh and tasty. Our only criticism was that the tables are packed in and it's very noisy.

Great atmosphere, service and food!

By Aha444 |

Went here on a stop over in Atlanta: Ranked high in TA, and now we know why. If you are looking for a really good vibe and atmosphere, definitely the place. Food was good too. It was happening! Love the lit up toilets too!

A good dinner experience

By Belangelie |

The food was very good, with sushi, prawns and grilled lobster which was amazing. The tuna plate as well. Long list of wines also is available. The service was good with regular checks if everything was ok. Valet parking is available but required long waiting time.

Had a terrible stomach pain

By Izy x |

We went to eat sushi for our journey in Atlanta with some Italian guys. We expected that this kind of food is not good as the one we use to eat un Italy, btw we never thought that was so terrible. Al the dishes had the same flavor but the worst thing was that after three hours we had an incredible stomachache at the hotel... we had a terrible night. This food needs to be analyzed because the quality is terrible. I won’t recommend!

Fantastic Experience

By Lilmssarcasm |

The food, service and atmosphere were beyond compare! We had an out of this world sushi experience. Be sure to make a reservation.

Umi wants you to eat at Tomo

By ErinATL1 |

We eat out quite a bit and during the pandemic, we want to support staff at some of our favorite restaurants by ordering take out and tipping 20-50%. By that same token, business should be grateful people continue to support them. On a recent Saturday, I placed an online order at 5:20 for pickup at 6:25. Once I was on my way, I got a call that it would be ready closer to 7:00. I asked “So it will be ready at 7:00?” and this was confirmed. We showed up to the designated spot (which was an utter mess) and were told it would be another 30 minutes. I let the staff person know I could not wait any longer since we had two puppies at home to attend to and we left. When I sent a note expressing my disappointment and requesting a refund, I got a response to go “waste other people’s time” and to “try Tomo” (a nearby sushi restaurant). I saved a screenshot of the exchange. I was appalled by this response. It’s safe to say, and I know Umi doesn’t care, but I will never return. We ate there quite frequently for personal and business occasions, brought out of town friends there, etc. As they told me on Saturday, they want me to take my business to Tomo. Or perhaps when construction on Nobu is completed, we’ll dine there.

Bday dinner

By Heidi P |

Amazing staff and best sushi around. The smoked duck with Asian pear is my favorite on the menu but I have tried.the sashimi of salmon and eel and loved it. I find it funny some of the reviews of people who have never gone. They have a dress code and I like places that have dress codes it makes for more pleasant atmosphere.

Vegan Options & Excellent Service

By Norma R |

While this is a happening spot in Buckhead Atlanta, I was nervous as a vegan for what to order. The staff was incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and helpful. I really enjoyed the avocado salad, fried tofu, and the vegetable roll.

Worst restaurant ever!!! Do not eat here!!!

By Giter |

Food was cold. Service ok but with attitude. Do not deserve the high ratings. This restaurant is overpriced. I will never come back nor my family or friends!

Great restaurant, but....

By William R |

Umi Sushi is reputed to be the best, or certainly among the best, sushi restaurants in Atlanta. One generally needs reservations far in advance, they have a dress code (rare these days), etc. It’s expensive, but you expect that. We went for a night out, without any preconceptions other than the fact we love sushi, have spent time in Japan, and eat frequently at nice restaurants. We were a bit early, had a drink in the bar, and then sat in the main dining area, basically a large, high-ceiling room with dimmed lighting and appropriate decor. Quite nice. We ordered Omakase which, if you’re not into such things, means the chef sends you what he thinks is the best that evening. There are 3 levels; we chose the least expensive which was $100 per person. The service was prompt, polite and proficient. The selections of the five courses were of very good quality, with good presentation, but honestly, other than the spicy tuna tartare, were pretty routine. What was a major negative was the ambiance. We were seated on a bench-like table facing each other, with couples dining on both sides. The room was amazingly loud, and I commented that the atmosphere (on a calm mid-week night) reminded me of halftime in a sports bar on Super Bowl Sunday. We couldn’t have carried on a serious conversation if we wanted to. The night was~$300 including tips. A mixed evening overall.

Simply Delightful

By Pattypattypatty75 |

This is without a doubt the best sushi I have ever had. The place is impeccable, small yet trendy. The staff is on top of the game and the Sushi chefs..well the sushi chefs are a the best thing at this place. I was in Atlanta for business, and got to eat by myself all week...I saved Umi for last..I had a feeling this place was going to be ALL THAT...and indeed it was (my wallet thanked me I went there on my last night) Reservations are encouraged, I was lucky to score one chair at the sushi bar, which made the experience even better. I was mesmerized by the delicate touch of the sushi chefs, the attention to detail, the presentation....it was a show to see...so glad I was at the Bar. Everything on the menu was apetizing to me, and it was very hard to make up my mind, with that said, I decided to go for the Omakase Miyabi which is a 6 course meal..best desicion EVER! I don't think I will be able to eat sushi at any other place (maybe I will but it will never be the same). Pictures don't do justice to the food....every course will prepare you for the next...it was a party of flavors. Simply divine.

Great

Fun drinks, great sushi, very busy!!! Make a resi too. Everything is very fresh and delicious, lots of choices, so everyone will be happy,

Loud, so loud...

By FroginJapan |

Food is delicious - and to some extent authentically Japanese (as my TripAdvisor name suggests, I have lived a number of years in Japan). The overall feel of the place is very un-Japanese. It is loud, extremely loud, dark, extremely dark, and in my opinion, trying way too hard to be hip. Too bad.

Good sushi. NEED RESERVATIONS. A Bit pricey.

By Actor21 |

Wonderful sushi. JAM PACKED restaurant. Good service. A bit pricey and aloof but overall a good experience.

Sushi like no Other...

By Dmbading |

I had heard so many great comments about Umi we decided to try it out...not that I can order sushi or eat with chopsticks. Omg! We ordered the Ito-Kase (sushi bar only) and had such a wonderful meal. The service was excellent and we were concerned that we would overeat but our waitress made sure we were ready for the next course. The yellow tail with jalapeño and cilantro, sashimi platter, lobster, nigiri and bento box chocolate cake made for a wonderful meal. Will be back and will definitely sit at the sushi bar...loved interacting with the chefs.

Arlantas version of nibu

By L2858MAmartinn |

We don't have nobu in atlanta, but we sure do have umi. Always a full house and tough to get a table without notice but well worth the effort. Everything is outstanding across the board from the very simple avocado salad to the waygu beef entree. The yellowtail appetizer and cod entree are must orders.

GREAT SUSHI

By Wesstone |

Throughout the Pandemic Umi has kept in touch with humorous text and to go availability. They have re opened and I went for the first time. They have done a great job of keeping distance and the food seemed to have gotten even above the excelence that it has always been. Great job UMI !

Best sushi atlanta

By L2858MAmartinn |

Always an Amazing meal. Don't miss the yellowtail appetizer or avocado appetizer. The cod is fantastic and the new waygu beef entree melts in your mouth.

Melts in your mouth

By Jena1272 |

We are in Atlanta from New York for the gift show. We ordered the Umi omakase. Everything was excellent. There was a long lapse between 2 dishes which was a little frustrating but it didn't ruin the overall experience for us. It was surprising how they served the omakase, instead of serving each course as a personal dish, we had to share the plates. Not really how one would experience omakase in Japan or New York. Wasn't a big deal though...

Better options available.

By TheSakuraba |

The food is not bad but there are better options available. Nice ambiance and staff should be better prepared. At the end of the day not having a good value for money.

An overall outstanding dining experienc!

By mileagedropout |

Just right friendly service; much more varied menu than their name implies; good wine list and beautiful setting. A bit pricey, but great for a celebratory evening out.

Excellent sushi but crazy expensive

By Wellington24 |

This is an impressive night out, but you will pay for it! I may have missed a note on the menu but I ordered four different things from the special "slightly cooked" chef's menu. Total was about $45. I got 8 pieces of fish on rice. I was a little shocked. Total for me to eat my normal amount of sushi was $90, no drink. Taste was excellent but it was not twice as good as what I would normally get elsewhere.

Beautiful presentation

By Here2Sea |

Each dish is presented beautifully but I did not enjoy the fish on my visit. It did not seem fresh. I love the flavored salts offered with the edemame. I will give it another try again in the future. The decor is contemporary and the staff are very nice! I can see this being a fun place for hibachi.

Great Food, horrible service

By AzinGol |

This was my second time at Umi and my girlfriend made reservations for my birthday for the 2 of us. The restaurant is nice and trendy. We had to wait 30 minutes for our reservation, after we were seated it took 5 minutes for our server to greet us. We ordered drinks and our food but I never got any wasabi or ginger with my sushi. Not once during our meal did the server or anyone check on us to see how we were or if we needed anything or to refill our water. At the end when we were all done, I asked our server, "Was I supposed to ask for wasabi or ginger" and her response was "Sometimes. Did no one bring you any? Do you want some now?" Our dinner was finished, I don't need it when I'm paying the check. I should have told her that if she had checked on us, we would have had some. If I'm paying that much for food, the service needs to be at that price point too. Needless to say, I won't come back. Maybe they only offer great service to the celebrities that dine there and not anyone else.

"He was just a walk-up"

By Fordstaff |

Shame on you Umi Sushi. Here's what happened: I decided, last minute, to try Umi. I'm not from Atlanta and I heard from the St. Regis Atlanta that Umi was the place to go. I did NOT have a reservation -- I was a "walk-up." It was about 850 p.m. - Saturday night. I wasn't expecting a table but I thought why not try as I was only a party of one. I entered the busy restaurant and said, "I have no reservation however I was curious to know if there was a spot at the sushi bar for a single guest." The Maître D' said that "unfortunately there was nothing available, however if you wished to sit in the lounge we could accommodate you..." I said "thank you." I was seated in the lounge. 7 minutes after being seated, before any bar or food order was taken, the Maître D' came over and said, "Could I move to the bar?" I said, "Sure." Then I sat at the bar and the bartender, who I believe had seen me sitting for 7 minutes without being attended to, came to my rescue and took my drink order - a sparkling bottle of water. I then proceeded to drink my water while I was waiting for someone to take food order and the same Maître D' came back again and said, "Could I move back to the lounge table." I found all of this "musical tables" to be disappointing and unlike anything I've every experienced. I said to the bartender that I would like my bill - and he graciously said, "we'll take care of it." (I think he was aware of this ridiculous game of musical tables.) I went to the Maître D' and explained that I was leaving due to all of this back and forth. He didn't even try to get me to stay. Instead, as I was leaving I heard him say to his colleague, "He was just a walk-up." Wow. Thanks for making me feel welcome Umi.

Great Hidden Gem

By John L |

I took my girlfriend here for her birthday weekend. I'm not big on sushi but she loves it. I wouldn't even know this place exist only from the reviews online, since it's tucked away in between the Chop restaurant and st. regis hotel. They have valet service that shares with the chop restaurant which is only $2 so it works out best for everyone. The food overall was fantastic. My girlfriend said it's the best sushi she has ever had. It's clean and the staff are friendly and very helpful. I had their chicken, which was great too.

Umi Omakase is a deal!

By 3rh0 |

Great experience! We had a party of 4 and we each got the Umi Omakase (chef selection soup, starter, sashimi plate, hot dish, assorted nigiri, dessert) for $100 per person. Definitely pricey, but it was a really good deal with a lot of food, and it was good quality food too. The fish tasted fresh and there really wasn’t a bad piece. The hot dish with the cooked fish was really delicious, but the sauce is what really made it. The sauce was so good. The service was great—our servers were very attentive, refilling our water and wine glasses anytime they got low. Worth celebrating special occasions here!

Yeah, it’s worth the hype, not just Best Sushi in ATL, Best RESTAURANT in ATL

By Viknd |

i’ve eaten Sushi in Hong Kong, San Fran, NY, and LA, but nothing tops UMI in ATL. The Oturo, Yellowtail with Jalapeño, Salmon Nigiri, Rock Shrimp, Avocado with Wasabi vinegarette all were best in class. We sat at the sushi bar which is fun to watch and talk to these amazing craftsman do their thing, they are ARTISTS with their creations, and great to converse with. The waiters are very helpful and extremely attentive. Yes it is expensive, but worth every penny to experience delectable food and first rate service. Kudos to mgmnt.

Top Notch

By Bowmanator22 |

Umi is a pretty exclusive place. You have to have a reservation. A colleague and I visited after work one night and really enjoyed the sushi and the atmosphere. The prices are high but fair, and the service was excellent!

NOT RECOMMENDED

By JohnWilliams |

Came here for dinner. Food took years to come. When it did arrive, it was cold, tasteless, and honestly far below average. The Staff practically gave us a cold shoulder. The fish was not fresh for the price paid. The Sushi's rice was mushy. COME HERE ONLY IF YOU'D WANT TO SPEND A PREMIUM PRICE FOR A TERRIBLE SERVICE. -1/10. NOT RECOMMENDED.

Great Sushi, Great Service

By MRM1655 |

We wandered into Umi around 6:30 on a Monday evening and were seated in the lounge area. Who knew we'd need a reservation on a Monday...? The first thing I'll note is that the service was exceptional, despite being seated in the lounge. The sushi was also excellent - very fresh, great variety and creative. While the menu is not inexpensive, we had a great meal without breaking the bank. It's definitely possible to spend a lot of money here. Umi attracts a high-end Buckhead business crowd. I felt a little under-dressed in khakis and a plaid shirt.

Racist Establishment my opinion

By Go51834282688 |

If you're non black, I guess this would be the place for you. However, even with a reservation and following the dress code, my date and I still had to wait over 45 minutes, to just be told that our reservation has been cancelled by the owner whom seem to display a racist attitude towards black people. Upon looking up reviews, I noticed that this is nothing new. Take your business somewhere else.

terrible experience--don't go!!!

By Shelly A |

My daughter chose this restaurant for her 20th birthday dinner. We made the reservation weeks ahead of time and we're really looking forward to a special night for her. The restaurant confirmed the reservation by phone. We saw there was a dress code on the restaurant's website. My husband is something of a free spirit but we checked his attire before leaving home and thought he was in compliance. The dress code states no flip flops for men. My husband was wearing leather sandals with a heel strap. When we arrived, first they claimed they couldn't find our reservation and then stated their dress code extends to all men's open toe sandals. They were completely unwilling to yield and were extremely rude. We had no choice but to leave and in retrospect we are glad we didn't spend any money in a restaurant that is so mean and snobby that they are willing to ruin a family birthday celebration over the ridiculous assertion that all men's sandals are flip flops.

Arrived there by mistake... Awesome

By JimmyHH |

All the way north from downtown, in buckhead, this place is right next to the st Regis hotel, so it's not any restaurant, expect a high bill 😁. I went there to dine and the place had an amazing atmosphere, music, very low dimmed light and VERY VERY loud. The food is great and the staff is very kind. I would recommend this place to people who want to have fun, not really for a meeting. Dress well, don't have to be overdressed, there isn't any dress code (I guess). But a shirt should do it, they'll let you in but it's just for you not feel left out 😜

Best sushi in town- perfect date!

By Grace B |

Umi is without question the best sushi place in town. It's only drawback is that it's twice as expensive as some other places, but you are also paying for the ambience and prestige. I loved the shishito peppers for a started. The service was awesome, and I drank several tasty cocktails as well. I will definitely be back the next time I am in a fancy sushi mood. Definitely a great date spot!

Excellent sushi in a high end atmosphere

By Tim B |

I recently returned here after several years and was quite impressed with the quality of the sashimi, nigiri, and rolls we ordered.........otoro, uni, ebi, yellowtail, salmon and kamikaze roll were tasty, to name a few. The service was efficient and friendly. The restaurant was packed on a Thursday night.....reservations are needed.

Good but not like Nobu

The best was Avocado salad. It was the best I have had. Nice Asian flavor dressing and great presentation. Rock shrimp, yellowtail jalapeño, nigiri were all decent. Loved the vegetarian sushi rolls. That was something different. Also had the Chilean sea bass. Service is quick and the restaurant is dark but busy. Parking - they don't validate so might as well valet cause 1 hour cost is $8

high end sushi in the Buckhead district

By Curtis S |

in town for a conference, my sales guy shares my love of sushi. He also has a love of vodka. After visiting another sushi place, and learning that they did not have a full bar, we ended up at Umi. On a Monday night we were lucky to get a table. We started with drinks, edamame, and spicy crispy tuna rice. We were seated at a low table in the bar area. After the starters we ordered a variety of sashimi and a couple rolls. This was one of the rare places that had both Chutoro and Otoro. The fish was fresh and nicely presented. The roles were well prepared and delicious as well. The cost was considerably higher than my usual place, but you're in downtown Buckhead, so what do you expect. Very good sushi, hip atmos, and attentive staff. Recommended

Very good food!

By Cindy W |

High quality, absolutely fresh sushi. Quiet enough to have a conversation at the table. Kind of hard to find if you don’t know where to look.

More than a meal, it was an experience

By BixUS |

From the valet parking and the elevator to the plaza floor, it was clear this was an upscale restaurant. We were warmly greeted and with the table not yet ready, offered a seat in the lounge. Without having to ask, we were offered iced water on muggy summer's evening - a nice touch. The restaurant is on the smaller side but the dark walls and low lighting are soothing. The wall on the back is the prep area with 4-6 very busy chefs working nonstop. Our appetizer was an amalgam of crispy, soft, salty, tangy joy - the Agedashi tofu. Perfectly sized and fried. The unagi sashimi had the usual great sauce and thin slivers of avacado to add more butteriness to the fish. We shared an 8 piece chef's choice of nigiri and I am at a loss because each item was different and had its own special qualities. When we asked our server for a suggestion he said he'd surprise us and he did. The Sake Aiolil Nigiri, cured Scottish salmon with garlic aioli, lime, and caviar. Again it was something for all the senses, beautiful, with a tremendous fragrance and layer upon layer of flavors. Then, not to be outdone, he brought us a Kamikaze Roll which is a spicy tuna roll topped with yellowtail, masago, green onion, and hot sauce. The combination was a 3-5 minute kaleidoscope of flavors. This is no exaggeration. If you aren't talking, drinking or texting and just pay attention to the changing sensations you are in for a real treat. Since these are small bites, we had room for dessert. Sadly they only make 10 each of a chocolate globe that comes with a mallet (all gone by the time we arrived) and a green tea souffle which we grabbed. We also shared a Chocolate Bento Box which contained a flourless chocolate cake (that was close to a souffle itself) and scoop of green tea ice cream. I was slightly hesitant about the green tea as a primary ingredient in our desserts but it was understated and just right. As a side note, they make a perfect Moscow Mule with pressed ginger juice, lemon, and sugar water, with a thin slice of fresh ginger in the drink. It goes perfectly with sushi! This isn't a meal to have every night, or even every week but does satisfy, both the eyes, and the stomach. I would say it's definitely worth another trip.

Always impressed

By Sela-Bay M |

Umi is a must do if you’re looking for sushi in Atlanta, nevertheless great sushi in the US. Better than Nobu in my opinion. Very very small restaurant. Often loud, but very high end vibe.

Great food... listen to customers about the experience

By RGN_7228 |

There is no doubt that the food and quality of ingredients is superb, service was also great. But like other people who have posted about their experience, the place is so dark you can't read the menu and instead of having a cool vibe, all ambiance is destroyed by cell phone flashlights. It is also painfully loud, I could not hear my friend. I personally don't like to share a table with strangers even if there is enough distance, but I understand due to size of the place. But the food is without question, outstanding.

Amazing!!!

By Kim M |

Loved everything about this establishment! The food... the atmosphere... the staff ... All amazing! We met the owner who was extremely nice! Thank you Umi for a wonderful experience! We will definitely be revisiting this restaurant on our next trip to Atlanta!

Great Anniversary Dinner!

By WillIGoBack |

Definitely one of Atlanta's top restaurant. Decor, hospitality, details of service and food all excellent. Cocktail program and sake list perfect. The menu is full of amazing choices. Just dive in be adventurous and go along for the ride...Servers are most than able to be your tour guide. Will I Go Back? You Betcha! Don't forget to ask about the newly opened speakeasy down the block. Ask host upon leaving. They will escort you! Wait till you see this place.!

If noise isn't an issue..this is a GREAT sushi restaurant

By terrycarlson2018 |

Noise does bother me...the vibe in this restaurant is super cool...it's a beautiful space. The sushi is seriously delicious...the menu extensive.

Unagi...the best I have had.

By Matthew E |

Was in town for work and was told about the beat sushi in Atlanta. Came here on a Saturday night with the hope of getting a seat at the bar. First it is very hard to find the entrance. When Uber dropped me off I had to walk up a set of steps then continue thru a garden area to find the restaurant. It was extremely busy, as I expected on a Saturday. The hostess informed me that it may be a 30 minute wait, but before she finished said that a seat just opened up at the sushi bar. All of the staff was very inviting and friendly, welcoming me as i was lead to my seat. Before sitting down one of the chefs welcomed me. He let me know if I had any questions to just ask. I was approached by the server as soon as I sat down and she took my drink order. I have been to many sushi restaurants around the country and they all seam to be different, when it comes to ordering your food. This place allows you to just tell the chef in front of you what you want and they then let the server know. I do like this version, as I like to converse with the chefs, as they are making the sushi for you. Now to the Unagi...it is the beat I’ve had. Tender, flavorful, and a perfect presentation. Then I ordered the hurricane roll. Spicy salmon, cucumber and topped with yellow tail and avocado. It was very good. Just the right amount of spice and the cucumber gives it the crunch. This is a must if you are in the Buckhead area looking for sushi.

Simply Unparalleled

By BigPapiArturo |

Tired of mediocre sushi? Step up your experience at Atlanta's legendary sushi oasis, Umi! Jalapeno topped yello tail, kobe on crispy rice, lobster finish baked at your table, and delicious cocktails for ever palate. Its unique. Its Umi!

If it ain’t broke...

By Bryan V |

Found! This is a shameless knockoff of Nobu. There are very few items on the menu that are particular here and nowhere else. That being said, if it ain’t broke don’t fix it. Everyone seems to love Nobu so why not recreate the food and vibe where it is not...Atlanta. The vibe was very “cool.” This is a fashionable and attractive crowd indeed. The music is loud and pumping. TThe party goes pretty late. The food also was very good. Tasty and well prepared. The service was excellent. Everything came out quickly; in fact we waited longer than it took us to eat. All in all is was enjoyable but not pleasant. For more great reviews check out The Loupe!

Exceptional Sushi

By China2002 |

This is our favorite sushi in Atlanta- It's a little different by Atlanta standards as far as the atmosphere and clientele- it felt more like Miami to me. The atmosphere is more trendy but as usual in atlanta it’s also very comfortable. The sushi bar is great as well as the tables (some are very long shared tables). A reservation is definitely required.

Very good experience

By Christine S |

I enjoyed the varied dishes very high quality fish Beautiful decor beautiful atmosphere Service a bit fast pity

Racism and rude behaviour from staff

By Severin P |

The food was sub par, took hours to get our food. Black friend was not permitted in for sneakers while i was wearing sneakers as well and allowed in (i’m white). They are intrusively obtuse about their dress code to POC and rude about it.

SIX STARS!

By Douglas P |

This is my first ever SIX STAR review. This restaurant is AMAZING. I have never had any better food. It was primarily sushi BUT they have other options; however, don’t! We went completely with the waiter’s recommendation for everything. It was absolutely fantastic! The servings are usually bite-sized like regular sashimi. Our servings were brought out in six pieces for our party of six. I loved every one but my favorites were the lobster served with a beautiful sterno-like flame and cooked an additional 30 seconds at the table. AMAZING! The Black Cod is a taste that must been experienced — like buttery velvet! The restaurant itself is very small so things are tight. You may see celebrities but it is low light so the celebrities can have privacy, I guess. Apparently, the servers sign NDAs so don’t ask them if they see anyone. 🤪 I told my group that I will try to eat here every time I come to Atlanta. However, call WAY AHEAD for reservations. AND, be aware that you will have to sign a contract for them!! But it is WELL WORTH IT (and you will definitely go over their limits on the contract so don’t worry about that).

Umi Umi and Umi

By Bernard N |

This is our second time visiting this establishment and I can’t say we were disappointed because there is so much to discover, from starter salmon yuzuviche, shrimp tempura appetizer, yellowtail jalapeño to , miSo soup to warm up your body when the weather is chilly, lobster toban-yaki, black cod, kobe beef roll and so much more. But the things that stand out more is the plp that works there. Cheers Jose at the bar taking care of us, always a pleasure to find someone who is passionately of soccer as I’m :)

Horrible Experience

By liz20166 |

I made a reservation online for a dinner while I was in town for business. When I arrived, they tried to sit me at the bar even though all tables were open. When I requested to sit at a table, they said that she would have to check. I waited for a few minutes as the two employees spoke negatively about me being a party of one. When I approached them saying that I made a reservation for a table, the male barked at me "M'am please wait over there."They finally decided to let me sit at a very small table in the corner hidden from everyone. They truly acted like they did me a favor (mind you it was 5:30pm and no one else was in the restaurant). During my dinner, I was treated like I was a burden because I wasn't drinking alcohol (remember I'm there on business). I even had a full glass of water dropped on me by someone else and my server said/did nothing. They could have cared less. I have been to this restaurant over 8 times and I will never go back. This is not how you treat your loyal clients. When I left there were only 4 tables filled in the entire restaurant yet no one said thank you or bye to me. Save your money and go to the hundreds of other great restaurants that appreciate your business.

GREAT VIBE IN THIS BUZZING RESTAURANT!

By Jane Wharton |

Situated next door to Chops Lobster Bar, my partner and I visited Umi. Great atmosphere, great staff and food. All the food was excellent except the urchin which I guess is an acquired taste - not for me! Wine was excellent at about $50 and all in all, a wonderful night

Mouth Watering Sushi

By jenb33 |

This is some of the best Sushi I have ever had and definitely the best in Atlanta. Need to make reservations several days in advance.

no shorts

By Compass38330 |

I showed up in shorts - smart casual. They told me no shorts allowed. Totally unacceptable for a restaurant in ATL. Still the best sushi in town ... but this needs to change!!!!

Sushi at it's best!

By Robert P |

My girlfriend recommended this place on our recent trip to Atlanta and boy was it a pleasant experience! First off, this place can be difficult to get into without a reservation. We called around 1pm for a same day reservation and they were able to get us in at the Sushi bar for 9:30pm. Make sure you call and reserve a spot and show up on time, otherwise you will most likely not get seated. Dress code is Business/Business casual. Parking: Many say it is difficult to park. I think otherwise. Valet is available for a mere $2 + tip (as long as one of the restaurants validates your ticket) If you are coming down Peachtree from Lenox, take a right at Buckhead Ave and go to the back of the building. If you are coming from the opposite way, you will pass The Shops Buckhead on your right and take a left onto Buckhead Ave (Corner where Tom Ford is). Umi is tucked away in the back near The Regis (Atlas Restaurant). As for the Umi experience, I really don't have to say much as everyone else is spot on. This is a sushi experience you will not want to miss. Expect to spend around $200+ for a meal for two. TIP: When you make your reservation, add in a "Chocolate Kyu" for dessert. They make limited amounts each night and you most likely won't be able to get one if you order it there.

The restaurants aesthetics

By Ciaran G |

The restaurants aesthetics are nice and the food was okay but not worth the price, we found the staff really rude and unwelcoming.

Great sushi

By croakies |

This is undoubtedly the best sushi in Atlanta. Amazing experience with a refreshing level of service, our server was so knowledgeable, brilliant. Having been here, I'll struggle with some other Japanese restaurants we haunt. Try it!

Favorite spot ever

By annaf f |

You can feel the atmosphere change the moment you arrive at Umi, and the sophistication usually rubs off. You'd want to eat each bite of the snapper carpaccio with both the lemon and the spicy paste as you're told or you're wasting your money. Plebeian tastes may not appreciate the sublets, but sushi aficionados can tantalize their palates with outstanding quality and service.

Great Food

By Alex M |

Excellent restaurant. Outstanding food and good service. Demand high and restaurant small and, as a result, a little crowded. However, I would highly recommend to anyone looking for some outstanding sushi in the ATL.

Need to abolish the policy of having everyone in the party present before seating

By PP2603 |

The food is always great and this is the 3rd time that I came back. I just hate the policy about no seating until everyone in the party present. It probably better for the restaurant that someone can start ordering first while waiting for some tardy member in the party in order for the restaurant to have table available for the next party earlier.

Good food starts with good ingredients

By Ronita Z |

Me and my husband went for an early and quick dinner before we went to a show at the Buckhead Theatre. It was 50 degrees outside and yet the restaurant was freezing (AC on). We were sitting by the bar- it was nice but not comfortable... The service was extremely professional and pleasant. The food was phenomenal!!! For Sushi lovers- GO! It’s a must!!!

Girls Sushi Dinner

By Seema P |

First of all this place is hard to find. It's tucked in the back behind another great restaurant, King + Duke. We made reservations at 8:30 and arrive right on time. We had to wait about 20 minutes still and I got to the point of frustration because this place is a little small, dark, and people were pouring in. I asked the manager how much longer and instantly he asked if me and my girls would like a round of drinks on the house. That eased our minds and we waited just 2 more minutes and we were seated. The wait staff was super friendly! They mentioned our comp drinks were coming along with two comp appetizers for the inconvenience! We were so excited since we didnt expect all the comp stuff. THE FOOD: The food is beyond fresh, and amazing. We ordered a Lobster dish that we noticed everyone was ordering. It's two lobster tails chopped up and heated at the table. They pour a brown butter sauce on it. First bite and we were all wanting to order more because we knew we were going to be fighting equal peices. We ordered two more sushi dishes, and not only was the presentation on point, but the flavors were not like other sushis we've ate. The rice wasn't over powering and sticky, and the seaweed paper was so thin, that you couldn't even tell it was in there. Dessert was a green tea ice cream with a chocolate souffle cake. Not too sweet and we were enjoy every bite until.....we found a small piece of hair :( We were so bummer but didnt want to judge the place because we ordered dessert at a sushi place. As long as their sushi is good, we were happy. Surprisingly, our dessert was free too!! We saved about $75 at this place. ATMOSPHERE: It's very dark in here. I'm 37 and I needed my phone light to help read the menu. It's very trendy...we noticed alot of tall, slender, model-like people coming here. STAFF: LOVE THEM!!

Totally Awsome meal

By Gary |

We were in town for a truck show at the GWCC and we heard if we liked Sushi we needed to try and get into this place. Hands down this was one of the best sushi restaurants I've ever had, and I've been to a lot. Make sure to reserve a table as they are very busy.

If you only had one last meal

By sjhurd |

This is my favorite place to eat. If I could eat here everyday I would be so happy. It's really hard to get in to, make reservations early. My favorite on the menu is the sea bass and the lobster. It's divine. Don't miss out on the place. If I am dining alone or on a date I love to sit at the sushi table. It's fun to watch the chef's create their masterpieces. If you are in a large party then this will not work.

Best sushi in Atlanta

By Virginia R |

Umi is a step up from any other sushi restaurant in Atlanta. The dining room is stylish and lively with music and conversation. The food is meticulously prepared and presented. We enjoyed the chefs tasting menu ( Ito-Kase). Chef Itosan selected each course. We started with the freshest plates of sashimi, followed by yellow tail jalapeño, tuna tartar, hirame usuzukuri (flounder sashimi), abd then the lobster with brown butter sauce (insanely good), rock shrimp tempura in spicy sauce and black cod (so delicate). The we had beautiful plates of sushi. Each piece a tiny jewel perfectly finished with elements such as Japanese basil or truffle oil. The food was beautiful and the experience second to none. We will be back soon

High expectations, poor reality

By Fernando I |

To start with, this is the first restaurant I have been, and I have been in some, including some michelin-star restaurants, that I am asked to give my credit card when I call to do the reservation, and they warn me if I cancel in less than 24 hours, they will charge 60 dollars per person. Well, that really sets a high level of expectation of that self-proud restaurant. Obviously they also warn you there is a dress code, despite when I was there I was sitting next to a couple that were wearing jeans and t-shirts...anyway, let's focus on the meal itself. This is obviously a high standards restaurant, with tasting menus from 85 dollars. In a very posh area, the look is fashion.... When I reserved I told them I was celebrating my wedding anniversary, and if I could get a nice table, well, I got table 16, just in the middle and surrounded by other tables very close (we had to move our table to leave it...), when tat the time we reserved they had other tables in the corner much more quite and confi...basically, an this is somehting I will repeat in my review, they do not f care... So we did the tasting menu, and lady came to describe the dishes. IT was ok, but not at the level of an 85 dollars tasting menu: - Miso soup, simple, ok, - Red snapper and Tuna Carpacios. Those were quite good - Sashimi: 7 different fishes, the only quality one was the fatty tuna, the rest, red snapper again, salmon, tuna, octopus, ...quite common ones. But it was ok - grilled Cod and Sea bass, with their sauces. That was really good, the star dish of the night - Nigiri, again, almost same fishes than from sahimi, without the nice one, fatty tuna, so, tuna, salmon, scallop, red snapper, ... To my taste they added too much wassaby in the rice, so everything tasted wassaby to me. - Dessert: mini pannacotta (in a shot glass), micro mochi with some black sesame outside, and chocolate corn flakes (corn flakes? really? yes, really...). By far the worst dish of the night, simple, not Japanese (except for the tiny mochi, that was not even stuffed, it was plain sweet rice pasta with black sesame outside, quite tasteless) Service: summary, they do not f care. In this kind of restaurants you do not expect to be served in a brown paper mat instead of a proper cloth. Also you do not expect that the waiter takes your wooden cheap sticks (one use only, not fancy ones) that you put in your mouth, with their hands, and move them on a side of the table, without replacing them. If they do not replace them, at least they could ask you to take it, not put their hand on it and move them...not really hygienic. The woman who described the menu, did not f care about us, she interrupted us each time in the middle of a conversation throwing the plates to the table and describing them in 3 seconds. smiling al the time, I give her that. She came after each plate saying: Was it fantastic? (smiling) and taking the dishes, without even waiting for a feedback. After the dessert we tried to give her feedback about the dessert and the nigiris having too much wassaby. She smiled and said: "Fantastic" (smiling), and left. Again, they did not f care. So overall, kind of good food, but too pricey for what you get, and terrible, terrible service, and with a nasty cancellation policy.

Great cuisine for an Atlanta restaurant!!.....

By pnmehta |

Went with wife for a quiet dinner. Was I wrong! Umi is a noisy and boisterous place with outstanding food and a buzz that is more like NYC than staid old Atlanta. It's located next to the St. Regis and one can walk through an open courtyard from the hotel that connects to an unpretentious wooden door leading into the restaurant. As my wife is vegetarian she ordered sea weed and cucumber salad with miso soup. I had the tuna carpaccio and followed up with the Sake Aioli. But the main course - lobster Toban-Yaki was magnificent. With melted butter and gently heated over with a flame underneath, the lobster dissolved in the mouth with a crisp slightly burnt after taste. Superb. Would I go again? Definitely! Value for money? Astonishingly yes! The entire meal was not as expensive as I thought it would be. Definitely recommended.

Some of my fav sushi!!!!

By Alicia C |

Some of the best sushi I've ever had. It rocks your taste buds socks off. So many unique dishes. I loved the tuna with crispy rice cakes. That combo of smooth and creamy tuna with the crunchy rice is freaking unbelievable. The quality of the seafood is top notch. And the damn bathroom has a bidet! Are you kidding me? How fun and refreshing is that?!

Definitely be back soon.

By Donald Womack |

Excellent food and atmosphere. I definitely will go back. Ordered the kamikaze roll and uni sushi. I definitely need to visit for a great Japanese food experience.

Great food great service

By smaya |

Had a great time last night at Umi. Sushi is my favorite food and I like to find the best sushi in every city I go. Pretty expensive but not absurd

Still Great A Year Later

By michael p |

When you give a restaurant your top rating there is always a fear that it will not sustain that quality. With this place there is no fear...it is still great. This is a special place and should be saved for a special occasion. It will make the dinner even more special.

Favorite spot in ATL! :)

By Akari T |

I don't live in Atlanta, but whenever I flight out for work I ALWAYS make a pit stop! Yellowtail jalapeño is a must! It's so flavorful and it practically melts in your mouth. Speaking of melting, the toro & uni here is hands down the best I have ever had!

Silver Wedding Anniversary RUINED

By JonCaryn |

A silver anniversary celebration ruined by the owner Farshid Arshid. My wife and I decided to try Umi to celebrate our 25th. I booked 2 weeks before and wanted 8pm. I was told 6 or 9pm so I chose 9. They said they require a credit card to book which I gave them. I was told if I did not show there would be a $65 non refundable fee. I said fine. The day before I get a message from Takka that I need to call back to confirm my reservation. This irritated me as they already had my credit card. If they were doing this for me (which they said was the case) then the message should be just to remind me that I had a reservation and not to make me jump through more hoops by calling back, being put on hold and then waiting for him to find my reservation. I mean we are only talking about MF sushi!! Excuse the pun as they already closed MF sushi before - probably because the customers got tired of their bad attitude and the belief they can do and say as they please. We checked in at 9:02 and were told we would have to wait as they were running behind. They said go to the bar and order a drink. We could not get near the bar so I went back to ask how long till we can sit. I was told 15 to 20 minutes but they would take us to this EXCLUSIVE bar a few doors down. We were let in, seated and then summarily ignored for 22 minutes. It's now 9:30 and we don't even have a glass of water. We go back to Umi and I ask again how long. The guy says another 10 to 15 minutes. Then I tell him how frustrated I was with the whole booking shenanigan as well as having to wait 45 minutes for a 9pm reservation and it's our silver Anni. The owner leans forward and says your reservation is cancelled you can leave. He threw us out and ruined our silver anniversary celebration. He had absolutely no reason to do this as at no time did I ever raise my voice or cause a scene. I asked for absolutely nothing other than to seat us in a reasonable time as we did have a reservation. Their contempt and attitude for the customer should never be tolerated and I will never go back again. With that attitude they will not last!!!!! Umi will suffer the same fate as MF sushi as long as they keep up their disdain for customers.

Class Act!

By Dealmaker |

This highly touted modern Japanese restaurant was very good. Is it the best I have dined with no, but is up their with some of the best. Service was excellent. The lobster dish was our favorite. Attention to detail was perfect.Very expensive. Great chicken teriyaki.Tomo is Atlanta is almost as good!

Delicous

By wendy S |

We are always on the quest for what we feel is the “best” sushi around the globe. While in Atlanta, we knew we had to visit Umi. The restaurant is well-hidden behind Bones and the St. Regis. Reservations are a MUST, and I advise asking for directions regarding parking if you don’t know its location. We lived in Atlanta for many years, and still had to call the restaurant, because it is not visible from Paces Ferry. KEY POINT: TAKE YOUR PARKING TICKET FOR VALIDATION. We thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. The environment, sleek yet “earth” elements like the driftwood in glass cases add warmth. The service, attentive and knowledgeable. We found the presentation to be simple, but the rolls and sashimi are so high quality, there is elegance in the simplicity. The dishes, overall, were excellent. We had had aburi sushi in Canada and opted for the tuna here. We found it rather bland, and not the “melt in your mouth” expectation our server had promised us. We tried Umi’s version of a chocolate lava cake, one dessert we can never pass up. It is cleverly served in a bento box accompanied by green tea ice cream. A final note: expect what we would consider a high dollar tab. We spent over $200.00 for five dishes (one of them, two pieces of aburi sushi) and one glass of wine. Umi is a solid “very good to excellent.” Is it the BEST sushi we’ve ever had? We can’t say “yes’ with resounding certainty. It is among the best that we will attest.

Cool atmosphere

Another chance to hangout in a cool spot. Very lively for a Thursday. Great service. The manger, Jong was very personable. The food and drinks were good from start to finish. Must try the Chilean Seabass.

Amazing

The Tuna Crisp appetizer was amazing! Highly recommend the sushi roll New Paige! Sashimi was also fantastic! Avocado salad was refreshing and simple. Highly recommend this restaurant!

Zero Doubt

By AngusRodrigo |

I'm not going to comment on service as that fluctuates with the time (we were seated late but had an excellent server). I'm not going to comment on pricing, as that is a matter of perceptive (although this is not a bargain place). I will say that I have eaten in the best sushi restaurants in the world, including going to the fish market in Tokyo at 4am, and this is definitely up there at the top with them. There should be zero question about the quality and creativity of this place. Zero. Well worth it for me

WOW is an Understatement

By Milica B |

Umi blows all expectations! The food is incredible and the service is just great! i must warn you that this place is extremely expensive, but you get what you pay for which in this case is incredible food!

Always Fabulous

By Sylvia315 |

If you are a sushi lover this is the best sushi restaurant in Atlanta. We visit as often as possible. Whether we order off the menu or do Chef Ito's Tasting menu we always love every bite of food. Chef Ito and team are amazing and so creative. I have been to sushi restaurants all over the world and I must say this is one of the absolute best. If you are in Atlanta be sure to go to UMI! You never know who you may bump into as many celebrities visit this wonderful restaurant.

Sushi Heaven

this is not your budget sushi spot, but oh man is the food great here! make sure you make a reservation before going as its a smaller spot and they are always booked to capacity

Amazing birthday dinner

By Tad L |

Chose UMI for my birthday dinner, and it did not disappoint. The sushi and sashimi were amazing and the atmosphere was incredible, but what really stood out was the impeccable service. Starting with the phone call to book our reservation, every staff member we had contact with was friendly, helpful, and professional. They went above and beyond to procure my favorite type of fish for the occasion, and Chef Murakami was engaging throughout the service, with spot-on recommendations and even a couple of chef's-special dishes. My Japanese wife and I have been searching for a new "go-to" sushi restaurant in Atlanta, and with UMI we have found it. The fish is fresh, delicious, and expertly prepared. These people clearly know what they are doing! And they top it off with amazing service. We will definitely be back....and frequently

Quality over quantity

By Benjamin H |

Let me start off by saying that I have been looking forward to dining at Umi for a very long time. The food was wonderful, the service was good but it could have been better. My only complaint would be with the price, a little higher that what I felt it was worth. It is a beautiful space and I did enjoy my meal. I just can't see myself returning with so many great options nearby.

Best sushi

By katiemary10 |

Umi Sushi is my favorite restaurant in Atlanta, it doesn't have a lot of scene, its not somewhere I would plan a big birthday dinner, especially becausr of the high prices, but it is a place for a very good meal or a dinner for two. Reservations are recommended, mixed drinks are really good, and I always do the chefs meal if possible, amazing fresh sushi.

Awesome!

By CNR683 |

I love everything about this restaurant. It was a kind of difficult to find, but it was definitely worth the trouble. You have to go upstairs. Kind of easy to miss. Just valet park like you're going to Chops and the valet will explain how to get there. Beautiful space. Great ambiance. Great service. The food was fresh and delicious. Beautiful plating presentations. I highly recommend this restaurant. The best Japanese food I've had outside of Japan.

I used to be a "faux" sushi diner--now a fan!

I was with a group so we sampled many items--everything was outstanding--some of the stand outs--yellow-tail jalapeno, spicy tuna on crispy rice, kobe beef roll--too many items to mention them all.

Painful dinning experience

By FlyWithKids |

The food was very good, but overall the experience was extremely unpleasant. It’s a small restaurant, very tight. The lights are so dim, most people couldn’t read the menu without using their phones as a flashlight. The air conditioning was horrible, it made us have dinner with our coats on. And the worst part was how painfully loud it was.

BEST Sushi

By Sylvia315 |

We love UMI! From Chef Ito to the kitchen staff, everyone is amazing. We love the servers. They are so friendly and helpful. The food is absolutely wonderful and they never miss a step. Chef Ito does it perfectly along with his amazing team. We try to get to UMI as often as possible. Sometimes we enjoy all of our favorites, sometimes we tell the servers to surprise us and sometimes we do the Chef Ito tasting. All are amazing. We always look forward to our next visit. It is the best sushi in Atlanta.

Appalling reservation system and customer service

By Iyabo O |

I booked a reservation on open table the day before and I tried booking for 3, but it only accepted 2, so I typed a note in the special request box that I was booking for 3, and they should please confirm that they have a table for 3. I didn’t hear from anyone till about 36 hours after and they said they couldn’t book a table for 3, only 2. This was very disappointing because this was meant to be for my daughter’s birthday and I was going with her older sister- the 3 of us to celebrate. I was literally pleading on the phone but the first lady hung up on me before I could finish speaking, and then a guy called who was so abrupt and said “I’ll be canceling your reservation, because we only have a table for 2”. First of all, I wasn’t informed till a long 36 hours after, the staff were rude, and now every where is booked for tomorrow, because they are just informing me now. This was for a 5.30pm reservation- the very first appointment!!! How busy could they be? I’ve dined there a few times and even though they claim to be booked, there are always empty seats between 5.30-7. It never really fills up till 7/8pm. Appalling customer service!

Good Sushi with Pretty People

By trentwat69 |

The sushi was quite good...really enjoyed the chef’s use of shiso leaves in a couple different preparations - uni and a chef special. My secret sushi spot is better, but this is a nice in town alternative; and there are plenty of pretty people for watching.

Girls night

By Maggie B |

The atmospher was perfect. Very much alive. Tried out several dishes that night. Love every bite. Had the emperor roll, OMG. A must have. Coconut shrimp roll, Brussels Sprout now that was a treat. The flavors were dancing in my mouth. This is going to be a regular spot for me. Ryan one of the chefs, very courteous, manager very engaged. I can't say enough about that place. They get two thumbs up from me. If you love sushi this is the place.

The Best Sushi !!! Period.

By Tom H |

My wife and I dined at Umi tonight and we could not have had a better experience. We have had sushi two to three times each week for many, many years all over the US and abroad. We both agree that Umi is the best we have had. If you're in Atlanta this is an essential restaurant to experience. This was my wife's first visit to Umi and she was blown away. This restaurant is not inexpensive but it is a real value; you truly get what you pay for. The wait staff is well trained and friendly and the decor is elegant; but, it's the food that is so very special!

Outstanding hip restaurant

By Pittsburgh_PaJohn |

Anniversary dinner started with drinks and a salad with ginger dressing. Crispy rice with tuna was delicious, veggie sushi roll was perfect. Black cod outstanding. The very best was lobster tail cut up in little pc with dark butter poured over it on a hibachi to keep warm. Wow. The best. We look forward to coming back here for more terrific meals.

BEST Japanese restaurant in the Southeast!!!!

By Ivi Zo Li Fitzpatrick |

OMG.... this restaurant is absolutely AWESOME!!!! They have come up with a fun whimsical way to enforce social distancing.... with beautiful statues donned with interesting headgear having dinner next to ya. To give ya an idea of how succulent the food was... my 2 year old son & I came here for dinner two nights out of the four we were here for vacation. My favorite sushi items were the specialty sushi like sake aioli and yellowtail/otoro caviar. If you can’t decide which to get, I recommend the otoro b/c it just melts in your mouth! The aburi sushi were good, but I have had better at other Japanese restaurants. The wagyu beef was absolutely divine!! It’s pretty pricey at $33/oz (minimum 2 oz) but TOTALLY worth it! I think it was better than the Kobe beef I had in Kobe, Japan! The Chilean sea bass was a little dry but great flavor. The fluffy cheesecake was good but didn’t like the banana glaze that it was soaked in. This is my new favorite Japanese rest!!

Wonderful!!!

By JLB_ATL |

Very much enjoyed the cocktails and chef's tasting menu. I think we had 8 or 9 courses and everything was wonderful. I don't personally like raw/undercooked items and they had plenty of other choices.

Loved it

By ERJ |

Nice atmosphere. Great food. The Kobi beef is so good we ordered it twice. The only downside was the attitude regarding the 15 min reservation grace period which I understand needs to be in place for a popular restaurant. But we called ahead to indicate that we were stuck in traffic due to an accident and were told that it we didn't arrive within the 15 mins out table would be given away. I understand if people are a no-show but otherwise it's a bit snooty.

Excellent

By Mark S |

Umi is consistently excellent. From the hosts/hostesses to Ito and his sushi chef team, to the wait staff to the restaurant manager, EVERYTHING about eating here is wonderful. Highly recommended.

Great Restaurant.

Celebrated my Birthday here. It was OUTSTANDING Food and Service. Love it all. Nice classy 5 Star Restaurant.

Horrible customer service

By misalelyttle |

As a frequent business traveller, high end restaurant dining is no new experience. Food must be outstanding to offest terrible and rude customer service..left before being seated.

Great food but WAY overpriced

By Deep D |

The sushi here is really good. I ordered 4 nigiri which is 8 pieces total and I got 1 roll which is pretty small like 5 small pieces maybe 6. Very good food. But was 100 bucks for that little bit. I left hungry and went somewhere else. I thought the servers were kind of average, they tried to tell me stuff in Japanese I didn't have a clue what they were talking about. I looked for a dress code on their website and didn't find one and was told when I got there I couldn't sit in the dining room because I was wearing shorts. But they did seat me in the bar area I understand if there is a dress code but they should warn you about it on their sites!! So like I said the food is great but you could go in and spend 500 bucks a person easy maybe a lot more than that if you eat what you want. So if you got money falling out of you this is the place to go. If not I'd pick a different place to get sushi!! Most sushi places are much cheaper

Off the Charts!

By Warren K |

Great business dinner tonight at UMI. This is my first visit to UMI after living in Atlanta since 1987. Dixon, my primary waiter was fantastic. We had yellowtail jalapeño crispy rice, lobster Toban-yaki, Black cod, Rock shrimp creamy, hamachi caviar, Kobe-beef nigiri among other things. Angel food cake with ice cream for dessert. Everything was extremely fresh. Fish & rice were combined into extraordinary dishes, very light if you don’t eat too much rice. Restaurant was packed on a Wednesday night! One of the best restaurants in Atlanta!! I will return!!

Great in EVERY WAY

Visited Umi on a Thursday night. we had a reservation and were seated immediately. The waitress was attentive and had good suggestions . The cocktails were excellent and all the food was exquisite . It is a very nice place.

Exhausting

By deltahater |

We heard that this restaurant has great food and it really did, The sushi we had was very, very good. There is no way to dispute that. Where this restaurant is severely lacking is atmosphere, style and elegance. Our table for six was a table for 4 with a few small leaves extending its surface, Let's call it cozy. It was also very unstable and wobbly and as soon as one guest put their wrist on the table, the other side was elevated by 1-2 inches which made for a difficult dining experience. The restaurant also seems to be teeming with staff who all at high speed rush by your table, often in groups of 3 or 4. It gave the whole place the atmosphere of the food court of a department store near Shibuya station during rush hour. It is certainly not a relaxing, enjoyable environment. Also, the acoustic of the place is poor. It is extremely loud and you have to raise your voice to hear your party, which causes the table next to you to raise their voices, etc. You can see where this is going. It seems designed to turn tables (and a profit), not maximize the guest experience. To be clear, the food was outstanding. The way the restaurant is managed is poor and you can't wait go get out of there. If you are in your late 20s, like it loud, indifferent service, great sushi with bragging rights and bill to match, this place is for you. If you want to enjoy your dinner and have an evening to remember, this place is certainly not it.

Best sushi in Atlanta

By Grace B |

Umi is by far the best sushi I have eaten in atlanta. It is a small building that is quite popular, so I definitely recommend a reservation. We had reservations for 4 and had to wait for about 15 minutes. The server immediately brought out 3 complimentary appetizers to compensate for our wait. Every bite that I put in my mouth was incredible!

Delicious❤️

Fresh beautifully presented Sushi and seafood !! Best tuna tataki I have ever had! Delicious tsunami roll and great craft cocktails!! First rate!! Reservations recommended , excellent service!

Really gone downhill

By momandktravel |

We have eaten at Umi many times over the years but the past 3 experiences have been so bad that we have decided we will never return. Yes, the sushi is good and fresh. We had a reservation for 6 which you have to guarantee with a credit card and if a member of your party is unable to make it you still have to pay for that person. We arrived at 7:00 for our 7:00 reservation and were told that our table was not ready. The bar is so small and there is no place for 6 people to wait so they told us to go to their other bar. We went there and knocked on the door and they asked us why we were there. Good grief! After waiting there for an hour we asked if we could order something to eat but we were concerned that we might be seated before the food came and could it be served in the restaurant (it comes form the same kitchen). Not possible. We were finally seated at 8:30 for our 7:00 reservation. Food was good. Dinner with my daughter for her 18th birthday. Again, reservation was at 7:00. Table was not ready so we waited in the small crowded bar. It is so dark and loud in the restaurant it is really awful. Our dinner was rushed, desert menu presented before we even finished our main course. Again, the food was good. My daughter did not like her avocado salad and I asked if I could take it home and the answer was no. Ridiculously expensive meal that really was not very enjoyable. We will not return.

Putting Japan On Notice

By Vince M |

We finally went to Umi (after thinking it would never match our sushi experience in Tokyo), and it was amazing!! The quality of the ingredients, combined with the mastery of Chef Kazu and his sous chef Toshi, made for one of the finest dining experiences we have ever had. Additionally, the fluid and intuitive service provided by our attendant Joy and Sommelier SG created a warm ambiance that blanketed the overall experience. Our only disappointment was that we waited so long to go to this wonderful place... JUST GO!!!

Another hit

By Jermey Smith |

I’ve not been to umi in a few years and where I currently live you can’t get quality sushi without driving 3 hours for it. We were running a little late due to rain in Atlanta traffic but was greeted at the door and told that we would have to wait a little bit. We sat down and was greeted by Kevin who explained the menu in great detail . I ordered a paper plane which wasn’t on the menu and Kevin talked with the bar tender about accommodating me. After dinner we expressed interest in going to the garden bar next door which was quite packed . It was a long shot but Kevin was able to get us a seat which we 100 percent enjoyed. Kevin was present thought the entire service , was open by never telling us no, was thoughtful of the fact that we drove 3 hours to eat at umi , and was swift throughout service . I’m not vip but Kevin made us feel like we where.

Wow! Something different and special

By michael p |

It's a very small restaurant and reservations are hard to get but it is worth the effort when you do get one. We did not have Sushi but ordered other items from the menu. Every thing we ordered was perfectly prepared and had that special taste that makes spending money to dine out worth it. The wait staff was friendly and happy to explain any questions you might have. A great special occasion restaurant.

Hidden Treasure is a MUST

By Grace B |

This is by far the best sushi I have had in a while. I will definitely be returning. We had a reservation for my mom's birthday. We had a little wait for our table, so they immediately brought out 4 different appetizers on the house. I LOVED the crunchy shrimp? I think it was called. We ordered a host of rolls and shared. Everything I ate was delicious. I truly, truly loved this place, and I can't wait for my next visit!

Very good!

By WhitneyandDiddy |

Ordered: Moscow, mule, 2 Spicy tuna crispy rice, yellowtail jalapeno, house salad, lobster toban yaki, kobe beef nigiri, new page roll, and a chocolate dessert. The crispy rice appetizer was a new take on the classic spicy tuna! The extra texture of the crunch puts it over the top. The lobster toban-yaki puts on a show and provides the most tender, buttery, perfect lobster. The kobe beef nigiri is the perfect bite and will make you want to order 5 more! Paul was an excellent waiter! Side note: You MUST use their toilet!!! 5 Star bathroom :)

Amazing!

By candd3 |

Our waitress was so nice and picked our food based on what we like. Every choice she made was awesome! The food was flavorful and service was awesome! Very neat place, and I cannot wait to go again!

Wow!!

By Joe M |

Excellent sushi and superb service. Admittedly, this place is a bit of a scene but we sat at the sushi bar and tore into a luscious omokase worthy of a top tier sushi restaurant in NY or LA. Wouldn't hesitate to return when in the area. They had a great wine list featuring several of my favorites, including the Pighin Pinot Grigio. I had the Angel Food Cake dessert with was delicious and a perfect pairing following all that sushi.

Fresh, delicious and a show

By Monte S |

Sat at the Sushi bar which I highly recommend! Watching the preparation and technique was enjoyable as well as interacting with the chef. Hands down the best fish and sushi in Atlanta. This is a must experience if you are in the area. Each piece of fish was done right and was very delicious!

Spectacular!

By Stan K |

A beautiful room. A comfortable environment. A wonderful meal. We were in Atlanta as refugees from Irma. Figured that we might as well the best out of a bad situation. Umi was a wonderful respte from anxiety, depression, frustration, and uncertainty. The staff is helpful, warm and professional. We had reserved a table but asked, for, and were given, seating at the sushi bar. The shrimp tempura appetizer was perfectly cooked and delicious ... same for the seaweed salad. Miso soup was perfectly flavored. The sashimi assortment was fresh and wonderfully flavorful. We also shared a "spider" (soft shell crab) roll. Great .Finally, the monkfish liver pate' was a revelation. Finshed with the special desert. A meal to remember.

Excellent service, even better sushi!

By Krysten S |

I was in atlanta on a conference and we decided to have dinner here. This place was extremely busy but surprisingly our wait was not terrible. We ordered a little bit of everything...well alot of everything. I really recommend the Kobi Beef it was out of this world. I would definitely return!

Fantastic Food!

By stbhatter |

My fiancé and I love this place. She has never been a raw sushi lover as she had never been to a really good sushi restaurant before Umi. Now she is hooked. I recommend getting reservations as this place is always packed. We always sit at the Sushi Bar to watch the chefs in action and to interact with the owner. He is always there and will whip you up something special if you ask.

Great food, lovely presentation

By Pam G |

Even though I booked several weeks in advance, the earliest reservation I could get was 9 pm, and when we left people were still pouring in. We arrived early for our reservation, but our table was ready and they seated us immediately. Our service was great and the food was fantastic. They have a pretty large menu and we were having a hard time deciding what to order. They offer a couple of multi-course options, but they sounded like too much food, so we decided to split one. We were so glad that we split it, we were still both VERY full when we left. We ordered the premium version and it came with a lovely salmon sashimi that tasted very fresh and citrusy, a spicy tempura shrimp dish that was to die for, an assorted sashimi platter with 8-9 different selections, a hot dish of sea bass, a selection of nigiri (again I think about 9 pieces), and a dessert! I loved the shrimp, my DH loved the nigiri, but everything was quite good. I definitely would recommend this place.

Beautiful restaurant and exceptional food

By graeme C |

Wonderful restaurant with great vibe. Beautiful interior and fabulous atmosphere and great staff. Food is absolutely excellent and service staff very happy to help with choices but absolutely do not over sell dishes that you don’t need or suggest too much food. Delivery of food is beautifully controlled so dishes arrive at a sensible pace so you are not over faced. Wine list is excellent with a price point to accommodate all tastes. Certainly not a cheap night out but quality does not come cheaply.

Very Strange !

By murraysgb |

Umi uses open table for reservations. However, Umi will not accept an online reservation for ONE person. This seems discriminatory and very disappointing to me.

Sushi in Buckhead

By John L |

We are a fan of great Japanese cuisine and Umi did not disappoint. I would say that the restaurant was a bit loud and table quite close together but other than that...it was a great experience. You can control your pace by keeping your menu and ordering each course after finishing the prior one... Food was fresh...tasty and service was outstanding... Another option is to sit at the bar (first come first served) and do a sake tasting and order from the same dinner menu...Umi is a great dining experience

Best Sushi in Atlanta

By Shigeru Furuya |

Great experience for sushi bar dinning. Fish quality was exceptional and I could enjoy talking to chef while eating sushi like I always did in Tokyo. Negative part in this place was too noisy like American sports bar that limits the dinning occasion I can consider.

AMAZING!!!

By lesliefr2016 |

We were able to get the last two seats at the Sushi bar on a weekend! The service IS AMAZING! the food IS AMAZING! This is the BEST SUSHI I have ever eaten! It is worth the frustration of making reservations days in advance! It is worth the ridiculous $100/person price! GO! ENJOY! The chocolate balls are great! The coffee made by the glass at your table is great! The bathrooms are even great!

Best Sushi ever

By Mark S |

Everything here is sublime and well prepared, with service to match. The sushi chefs are very particular about how you experience their creations(we like to share and wanted our nigiri cut in half...no no no...The servers are attentive and give advice that is not sales oriented(our server steered us to a hot sake which was less than half the price of everything else on the menu).

Upscale, trendy & wonderful sushi

By Fer T |

Wow, I was really impressed with the quality and service of this upscale, trendy restaurant. The place was absolutely packed, good thing I had an opentable reservation! (Highly recommended) Sushi quality was wonderful! Arguably one of the best sushi meals I've ever had! Service was very good as well, even with the place being full. Great ambiance, nice people, good music in a low-lit & chic small restaurant. Highly recommended

Sushi yummy

By Jonathan C |

The best sushi in Atlanta and a great atmosphere. Reminds me of some of best Manhattan sushi restaurants, great service, tight quarters, loud, and relatively expensive. Its worth it

Pricey but unique

By Jadeyjade07 |

Arrived here on a Saturday right before 6:00 and lucked out with a couple seats left at the bar. It soon started to fill up quickly after we arrived. The dishes we ordered: Avocado salad (Tastes way better than it sounds, the vinaigrette it comes with makes you want to take some togo)/ Lobster toban yaki (a little pricey, but worth it to try once)/ Amaebi (comes with the 3 fried shimp heads, don't let this turn you off, it's crispy and delicious)/ and the scorched sea urchin. (Amazing!) We also got a couple cocktails and our bill came out to just around $140. With that price, which probably isn't nothing for Atlanta, I would save this place for special occasions, or if someone else is paying ;) PS: They also have a super high tech toilet in the bathroom, you'll have to find out for yourself, but plan to be in there longer than usual

Great sushi, great vibe

By hbnem |

Presentation was gorgeous, fish was delicious, and the restaurant was buzzing. Nice bar while you wait for your table, servers were extremely helpful with recommendations.

Say yes to Umi Sushi.

By Yvette Mathis |

This sushi restaurant came highly recommended and it definitely didn’t disappoint. The art installation to create social distancing through out the restaurant was clever and fun. We sat at the sushi bar and it was great to see the action. Incredibly impressive. The server was knowledgeable and we had an amazing dining experience from the lobster dishes to the crunchy rice. Just everything was great!

meh.

Hard to find but worth it! Freshest sushi. Tuna carpaccio was superb! Everything else was amazing. Our server was great and worked with our timeframe to get to a show.

THEY WANT BUT THEY CAN’T…

By carla t |

First of all the food is good! I didn’t like their reservation policy, they ask your credit card and you can’t not only cancel but also change the number of people… if you change they charge 80$each! I found this too much! Then the location is nice but too noise also because the music is too loud for this kind of restaurant. Also, in the mail they give you a strightly dress code but inside there are people in a normal casual clothes, just not hat…as a foreign tourist this info make us uncomfortable before to go… In conclusion, in my opinion, it is not so cool as they want to be and the food is average good.
