fantastic sushi, great service, great value

By Gerronimo |

We had dinner here tonight while visiting San Diego. Have walked by this place a dozen times and tonight we tried it. Our only regret is that we should have tried it the first time. The decor is modern, fresh, and tasteful. Service was warm and helpful. A pleasure to watch the artist chefs in action. As good sushi as we have ever had and we will be back often.

Good Sushi Restaurant on Shelter Island

By Greg S |

Umi Sushi is a very good conventional sushi restaurant on Shelter Island. Very good sushi. Portions are larger than the average. Legitimate Japanese sushi chefs. A very long sushi bar. Excellent service. Prices are standard for a good sushi place. One word of caution: this is pretty much a sushi/sashimi restaurant. It does not have much else in the way of Japanese food: teriyaki, yaki soba, etc.

Great Sushi

By cowboy1275 |

This place is a jem located on Shelter island, they make some very uniq rolls and the portions are LARGE! These are like SUPER rolls at other sushi restaurants. The fish was fresh the staff was very friendly and the service was great. The missed one of the rolls on our order and when I brought it to their attention the quickly got us the roll and a few "extra" goodies to make up for it.

Great food

By Vickie D |

My son and husband love sushi, so we gave it a shot. They loved it! They had something for everyone even things I liked and I don't eat sushi. Great place

Really fresh fish and well done sushi

By richpa45 |

Had a "yen" to have some sushi late last night. Walked about 4 blocks from my hotel to Shelter Island to try Umi Sushi. Sat at the bar and ordered. Very good Nigiri sushi. Rice seasoned well without being overbearing. Not too vinegary or sweet. Just the right consistency, not too soft or hard and essentially falls apart in your mouth. Fish was very fresh. Had the Bluefin Toro, Hamachi, Aji, Saba, Ikura, Uni. Delish!!!! \ Joshua was the sushi chef, he knows his fish. Very pretty waitress from Japan. Will return to try the rest of the menu.

Must go

By Kttrout |

Of all the places we went, this was our favorite. If you like sushi, you will love it. PLEASE open a restaurant in Albuquerque!!!! HA! We will be dreaming of your crispy shrimp appetizer until we can return. Absolutely delicious food.

The worst waitless

By 946katsuyukim |

The taste is fine and the master was polite. But the service of the waitless was the worst. Overall, it is aveage.

Some of the best sushi ever!

By LeighjAuckland |

Some of the best sushi I have ever had!!! Made fresh either in front of you or they do takeaway. We went back twice in our 5 nights it was that good!!!

Not as good as always

By Cristina K |

The rolls were falling apart and the rice was a little bit warm. But the worse was the service, we had to wave for our drinks twice and when they brought the dessert they put it on top of the dirty plates.

Yummy Umi!

By Carol |

We passed this restaurant going to and from our hotel on Shelter Island and decided to give it a try. I had read some good reviews and they didn't lie! We had a wonderful meal of albacore sushi, maguro, lobster roll and salmon skin roll. Everything was delicious and we'll go back next time we're in San Diego.

Good sushi, good place

By Giles Luis M |

A very good service and a very good sushi, this is a neighborhood restaurant and not fancy but don't get disappointed in my comment, you will eat one of the best sushis ever, try it you won't regret it

Well priced and tasty

By Summerasalifestyle |

Certainly not the best nor the worst sushi I've ever had. Reasonably priced and was able to sit at the bar ( nothing worse than going for sushi and not sitting at the bar. Greeted immediately and directed to the sushi bar...used to being greeted by chef...maybe not the style here. Anyways, nice but nothing spectacular. Looks like the only sushi nearby so...I'd return.

Always a good food

Staying closeby at Shelter island hotel, we have been keeping going to Umi Sushi at least once during our stay at San Diego. The food is always good quality and for a reasonable price.

Local Favorite on Point Loma

By NewportBeachWords |

I have recently discovered this fantastic little neighborhood Japanese restaurant & wish I hadn't delayed in doing so. Not a 'traditional' Sushi pervayor myself, I do enjoy a good 'Teryaki Bowl' & 'Tempura'. I have been in once for Dinner and 'Yakisoba Noodle' dish was excellent as some other prior reviews stated. Later in the week I dropped in for the 'Lunch Special" & was floored at not only the quality of the food, but the enormous portions served! For a meager 9.99 they bring out this oversized platter to the table (1) person - which contains: Calif. Rolls, Tempura, Steamed Rice, Teryaki AND Salad! Unbelievable & SO delicious! Too much food for one serving and enough To-Go, for sure. Also a must-try, the 'Brown-Rice' hot tea, which had a really nutty, full-bodied flavor better than typical 'Green' teas. I have tried several (other) local Sushi Places up & down Point Loma and the overall quality of 'Umi's' is far superior, in my opinon. I give the place TWO thumbs-up!

Good, not great

By GypsyTraveller94 |

Why can't we find fresh sushi in California? I mean it's good, but shouldn't a coastal town have outstanding sushi? Well the sushi chef was very friendly; he gave us condiment starters and a cream cheese roll for free. The waitress was non existent.

Mouthwatering

By Denis V |

Umi Sushi is the best! I’ve been here 3 times and it has been the best so far. The fish is fresh and very tasty. My daughter loves the California roll which is a very basic roll. Other sushi places, their California rolls have no taste, however, Umi Sushi’s California rolls are delicious. The sushi pieces are real big compared to other sushi restaurants. I live in Chula Vista, and I will drive to Umi just to have sushi.

Group of 10

By kjohnson76 |

We had a large dinner group, vegetarians and experienced sushi eaters (Japanese). The food all around was absolutely delicious. Can't say I have had better sushi anywhere.

Pass!!!

By cstruyk |

This place made some of the WORST sushi I have ever had, not to mention they have outrageous hours in which they close in the middle of the day (like we are in Europe). How they afford to stay in business is beyond me! Have been twice now (not knowingly I had gone several years back and when we pulled up I knew we made a mistake). For whatever reason, this place managed to make my girlfriend vomit, that's right, vomit! And she had an avocado roll... So no, it wasn't bad fish! If you like sitting in an empty establishment with outrageously rude sushi makers at the bar, go here!

Nice!

By hoopdog |

Face it, you're in a tourist area so you're going to pay more. Fine. Now, how about quality? The hamachi was excellent, very good miso soup, my son's chicken teriyaki was huge and tender and not overly sauced. Ebi was fresh and tasty - this place is very good. And, oh, yeah, our server - great! She was new and said so, but pleasant, sincere and an absolute delight in her efforts to do a good job. Skip PB and OB and head out toward Point Loma, if tonight was a reasonable representation of what they do, you won't be sorry.

Menu could be better

By DarlasDad |

Literally. Kind of weird wording/groupings but the food was good and nearby our lodgings.

Delicious Sushi

By Siamese |

What a fantastic sushi spot! Having worked in the sushi industry, I love finding places like these that do sushi justice. Everything was incredibly fresh, delicious, well priced and presented. Thank you, Umi Sushi, for making our anniversary dinner on the last night of our trip so memorable. I look forward to visiting again soon!

Great sushi find!

By sunlovers91730 |

While staying on Shelter Island, read some trip advisor reviews about this place. What a wonderful find! Joshua was our chef while we sat at the sushi bar. An artisan in his craft and very friendly. The fish was fresh, the rolls were delicious, and the price was great! Highly recommend this place...and will be back next time in San Diego.

Used to be a Favorite

By G3236DFmichelleg |

This Sushi restaurant used to be my go-to place. The fish was always fresh, good service and the rolls were beautiful. The past 3 times I've been to Umi, I have been disappointed. It seemed like maybe they lost their head chef or something because the quality has changed. The rolls always fall apart on you and the fish seems less fresh. I also noticed that there aren't as many patrons in the restaurant as there used to be. I kept going back hoping it was a one time/two time experience, but third times a charm; I won't be going back.

Superb!

By jandGald |

The third year running we have eaten lunch here wgen we were visiting San Diego and this time we took friends as well. All the dishes were outstanding, cant recommend it highly enough.

Simply the best

By Rick S |

The best sushi in Pont Loma. I suggest it to anyone. The service, price, and location are superb. If you have never had sushi, Umi is the place to go,

It was good

By lindy001 |

When we drove past during the day it looked a bit dodgy but when we drove past looking for a restaurant close to our hotel, parking lot was full so we decided to give it a go. Waited for about 5 mins for a table. Service was quick, portions were generous and food was fresh. If you're craving sushi on Shelter Island you won't be disappointed.

AWESOME!!!!

By ReneeFavoritePlaces |

We love sushi!! This is a great place. Wasn't pricey either. Clean. Great quality and presentation. Friendly service. We ordered several different rolls and all were wonderful and fresh.

Great sushi!

By Mark E |

I'm going to just post some pictures here. Great sushi. Great sushi. Lots of rolls. Great place for eating and conversation.

Good enough for my father-in-law and even better for me!

By GeorgiaSerendipity |

I trust my Japanese-American father-in-law to know good sushi when he sees it, and he also has an eye for good value. He didn't let us down by taking us to Umi Sushi. We had a large platter of various kinds of sashimi (a special for $20) that was absolutely outstanding--salmon, tuna, and two kinds of white fish, all impeccably fresh. We also ordered sushi, and a spicy white tuna sashimi in a citrus sauce--again, superb. The service was friendly and efficient, and the atmosphere cheerful. Our ten-year-old son was greeted with training chopsticks and a big smile. Our visit was the dining high-point of our trip to San Diego.

A very solid 4 out of 5

By _derekboyes13 |

We found this place on restaurant.com and were a bit skeptical based on some of the reviews we saw. After experiencing it firsthand though......I'm not sure what those people were talking about. While the food may not be 5 star sushi with all sorts of fancy sauces....it is definetely not grocery store or gas station sushi as others have mentioned. In fact, it is pretty dang good. I would go back in a heartbeat with or without the restaurant.com discount. Our young waiter forgot a couple of nigiri pieces we originally ordered but we were so stuffed by the time we finished our rolls we were actually glad he did. Nevertheless, he apologized profusely and made it ho to us with a free ice cream and mochi plate for the family. Great save and superior customer service despite the fact we really weren't mad. Positives: Friendly service, fast service, plenty of seating, "solid" sushi Negative: neighborhood seems a bit warn down and the building itself is a big dated.

Wish we lived closer

By Aneea B |

The soup, tea, and sushi were delicious... staff was friendly, and the restaurant was clean. If Umi Sushi was located in our hometown, we would become regulars.

Delicious and Affordable

By Pamela A |

This restaurant was recommended while we were staying at the Bay Club hotel in Shelter Island. It was a little far to walk (about a mile away - quick hop in the car). The food was delicious and very affordable. The service was good - they seated us right away. It wasn't a super-fancy restaurant (which helps keep the overhead low) but the food was good which is most important in my book. We liked the variety of choices on the menu - a nice variety of choices so there was something for everyone. We really enjoyed eating there!

Fabulous food, great service

By Corsica30 |

Super fresh sushis. Charachi plate is awesome. The chef sushis are pretty exotic and always tasty. The mochi ice cream could be better but all starters and entrees we've tried were really great.

Fantastic sushi

By D P |

We actually were in a hurry so opted for a take away but the restaurant looked good. We shared the chefs special which had 14 pieces in it and a miso soup. It was a mix of 2 California rolls and the rest was various fish- tuna, salmon etc and all of it was deliciously fresh and very flavoursome and at less than $15 a great deal for the two of us to share!

Good sushi near Shelter Island, SD

By Swb3 |

Good sushi, reasonably priced near the harbor in San Diego. Not crowded on a Thursday night in October - It's certain to be busy on weekends.

Best sushi ever

By roro l |

We stayed in San Diego for five days we ate in this restaurant twice that's how good their sushi is I would definitely go there again

Good value, generous portions, good quality fish

By PassarinhoAzul |

We were looking for a place to dine close to our Shelter Island accommodation and wandered into Umi Sushi. What luck. It was so good and the portions were so enormous that we took the leftovers back to our hotel fridge to have for lunch on the following day. There's no skimping on ingredients here! Fish slices were thick and fresh. We started with miso soup and edamame, then moved on to nigiri sushi, ordering mackerel, shrimp, salmon roe, flying fish roe, and the best yellowtail (hamachi) I've had. We then ordered three rolls, Tuna Paradise Roll, Spider Roll, and Big Bang Roll. Wow! Two would have been more than enough, but we didn't regret our decision. We were amazed by the amount of soft-shelled crab in the Spider Roll. It was delicious. My only criticism, and it's minor, would be that the tobiko was not great. It's also worth mentioning that rolls containing imitation crab with mayonaise can be overwhelmed by this flavor (because, remember, this restaurant doesn't skimp on ingredients). Their menu states which rolls contain imitation crab (surimi), so we knew what we were ordering, we just didn't expect such generous amounts of it. Now, I know there are people who enjoy surimi and I think they'd be thrilled. The service was prompt and efficient. We didn't need to wait long for any of our items. Our waitress was helpful and attentive. If we lived in San Diego (and not New Zealand) we'd be regulars! This a good place for hungry sushi lovers.

Fresh and delicious!

By texmexer |

This place did not look very inviting from the outside, but it was within walking distance from our hotel, and we were starving. We were so pleasantly surprised! The sushi was very fresh and well-prepared. I would definitely eat here again.

Need a "sushi" hit - this is the place to go.

By Ron J |

Had a great opportunity to spend only one night in one of our favorite cities and were craving sushi. Well we sure were glad we stopped here after reading previous T. A. reviews. My date had CHERASHI and I had a suhi / sashimi combination meal. Both came with an excellent salad and Miso soup. Restaurant on Shelter Island which is close to San Diego airport and other downtown attractions. My date is Japanese and she thought the food was excellent. Do not miss this restaurant which BTW is priced reasonable. I also enjoyed the KIRIN draft beer. Am ready to go back.

Out of the way sushi

By The_happy_traveler81 |

Good sushi at a reasonable price in an out-of-the-way location, near the entrance to Shelter Island. A good choice if you are staying in the area.

My Kind of Sushi

By TravlingBard |

Friendly, informal - they take the food seriously, not themselves! The service is great, the atmosphere is good, clean, comfortable, with several chefs behind the bar, all of whom make eye contact when their creation is set upon your table, and when you sample the first bite. Most important - the Food: generous portions with lots of variety at good prices. Sushi is never cheap but at least here you get a hearty meal for your money. At $14.95 The Shelter Island Roll is one of the most expensive on the menu - a delightful blend of fish and seafood and sauces that melts in the mouth. Feel free to bring the kids!

And I don't eat sushi!

By Alvin287 |

I have always had this issue with eating sushi for as long as I can remember! My best friend and her husband made me try it and I LOVED this place! They had a bunch of options and were understanding that I hadn't ever had sushi before and offered to swap out my order for food that I would like if I didn't like it, free of charge! Turns out... I like sushi! We got 6 plates of sushi for right around $60!

Good sushi, average ramen & miso

By meganjanebursey |

The sushi was really tasty. The miso was lacking in depth and flavour, and tasted watery with too much salt. The ramen also had no depth and was fishy in taste. I couldn't finish it. Service was attentive and friendly.

Sushi delicious...

By Pivo06 |

Umi Sushi in San Diego was a very pleasant surprise. The special rolls were very good (compared to many other great sushi restaurants), the service was excellent, and the kids meals were awesome. The prices were about average; yet the kids meals were very reasonable. Nice choice on Shelter Island...

average - good lunch options

By Sharkrunner17 |

lunch options were reasonable - a couple of interesting rolls we hadn't seen before - seemed fresh. Nothing special

Delicious

By Jenny F |

We were in San Diego in March and went here for dinner one night. What a great place. We are die hard sushi lovers and this was a great find. To start we had the Philadelphia roll, which was very fresh and very tasty. Our meals included miso soup and salad. I had the Chiriachi Don, and my husband had the 16 piece sushi. All were sooo good. The service here is great, the food is delicious, and it isn't crazy expensive. I would highly recommend.

Dinner

By CalT |

Sushi rolls were really good comparing what we had in Monterey Park, CA but I found the service was okay. We had to flag down the server for utensils and napkins after a few minutes. After the food were dropped off, we did not see anyone around till we finished. Price was reasonable.

Mediocre

By CSWhite |

Went with my family on vacation. The kids specials we're great! No complaints there. I ordered the crunch dragon roll and the spicy tuna. Both were mediocre at best. The crunch dragon roll had some sort of fish mince on top that was disgusting. The spicy tuna roll wasn't very good either. The service was ok, my daughter's meal we had to wait until well after the rest of us were served. So all in all I don't think I'll come back. Th

Need to work on their service!!!

By Robin V |

After being forgotten at Fiddler's Green we walked across the street to Umi. We have no complaints about their food but their service was horrible. We had to ask to be served by someone, they were slow to get the food to us and to come back and check on us. We actually went there twice, thinking the first night was a fluke and the fact that we love sushi so much, but we were proven wrong. It wasn't like they were super busy either. If you go, just know you will get good food but you may have to wait for it.

Nice spot for sushi

By jerryj12 |

Ate here because it was close to hotel. Good atmosphere and service. Food was good. No complaints at all.

Low quality

By TK-G |

Last time we were there it was phantasmic - but this is a couple of years ago. I read the reviews and thought it is still a great place to go for sushi. It was terrible: Not fresh, the rolls weak, everything made very quick and without any feeling for the food. The slices of fish three time as thick as supposed. Last but not least the personel did not show anything we know as Asian hospitality.

Close to the Vagabond Inn and tasty choices

By Beverlee B |

Ordered on Eat24 and was ready and waiting for me when I arrived. Reasonably priced and good value and good taste....fish was very fresh.

Delicious Sushi

By Ninjaeclipse |

Someone recommended this to us when we were visiting. I was very surprised how affordable everything was and the amount of sushi you would get with it. The sushi was great quality, and presented very nicely. It looks kind of run down on the outside but don't let that fool you! It's a fairly average sized restaurant, and the servers are very friendly. Try this place out, you won't be disapointed in the amount of quality sushi that you can get for an affordable price.

Delicious Japanese cuisine.

By Soulkitchin |

Went there with my family for an early dinner last week, around 5:30pm. We have lived in Point Loma for a year now and find it to be out favorite local sushi place. We lived in LA before and for Japanese would frequent Zono sushi in Burbank, Glendale or Pasadena. We think this is just as good or better.

Great Sushi

By vickyzzzz |

We go here often and we've never been disappointed. The sushi is always fresh, and the service is great. Inside it's comfortable. we usually sit in a booth close to where the chefs make the sushi. Once we had a large party and had a private room, Japanese style, and that was fun. I love the edamame appetizer. We usually order a couple of different rolls. It's a lot of food, and it comes tastefully arranged with lots of ginger and wasabi. We usually order hot tea. I do wish they would change the cups because it gets so hot I can't pick it up! The parking lot is small, and it does get busy. There's parking on the side street also. It may not be the best sushi in San Diego, but it's good and consistent.

We love this place!

By Lorli |

We've eaten here several times with family, business associates and just the two of us. We eat there and also live close enough that we can get it delivered. The service has always been wonderful and the food is tasty!

Not impressed with the food and service slow

By traveler |

We ate here because we like Sushi and it was close. Price and all seemed to be average. Eight people in our party. Staff was friendly but service was slow. I was almost finished by the time that the last person finally got his food. It looked like Sushi but was VERY disappointing. Cannot recommend the place and would NOT go again.

Amazing

By michael m |

Be prepared to eat some of the best sushi ever. Within walking distance from our hotel we discovered this gem.

Totally recommended

By Emilyjoong |

The price is neither expensive or cheap But is a great deal. Sushi is a must to order, The sushi rolls are absolutely awesome . Definitely will come again

Prompt service, Ample portions and delicious.

By venturequest |

We enjoyed the sushi and Japanese dishes at Umi sushi. Service is prompt, the meals are ample, and the food is delicious.

Came here with work friends

By Mzzqueenbee |

Was in town for a few days for work and we had lunch here twice cause it was so good! The rolls were amazing, along with the edamame.

OK

By Mindy M |

We got take out from this restaurant and I think we would have had a better experience had we eaten there. One of our sushi rolls was excellent and the other was way to fishy for me. The edamame was a little disappointing because it wasn't salted. Not the fault of the restaurant, I would just order something different next time. I would try this place again.

My favorite

By DurangoBob |

Tried some new dishes this time unstead of my yummy same order every time and was delighted. We were there on business and our guest was delighted too. Friendly and fast

Dinner at Umi

By F7805RNjamesp |

The restaurant was friendly, warm and offered very good sushi. They greeted you warmly when you enter, offered friendly service, and offered a three-four page menu of sushi and other Japanese dishes. The fish is fresh, reasonably priced, and offered in nice size portions. Their specials are worth checking out. This night they offered fresh Aji, which many of you may know is difficult to find. It was delicious and worth the price. It was so good that we went back two nights later with our friends. They recognized us, offered free rolls and friendlier service. Would gladly go back again and again! If you’re near or on Shelter Island and in the mood for sushi, don’t miss it!

Family Holiday

By Valerie F |

Best sushi ever! Have never seen such variety so beautifully plated. Over-ordered as is usual but sharing was easy from the first bite.

Poor Service and Out of Food

By CookerOfFaith40 |

The service was limited (not enough help), and they were not very friendly. The menu wto make a substitution without adding a price even though they were out of what we initially ordered. The fish seemed pretty fresh and the sushi chefs were fast. The decor was spot on, Service ruins it every time.

Great sushi

By CSLauto |

We love to eat any sushi food is great and special private party room that is a real treat if you're bringing guests also the Tommy boy role is to die for trying at least once you will be glad you did

Top quality ingredients

By riverandsnow |

Stopped it for a quick bite and ended up leaving stuffed. Ate at the sushi bar. The highest quality sashimi! The Maki and Nagiri were served as works of art and in larger than average portions. A bit expensive but worth it.

Favorite sushi in San Diego

By luv2travel707 |

A customer for years, and this place never fails to please. The portions are huge, the menu diverse, and the sushi is ALWAYS fresh! Sit at the sushi bar for a fun dining experience.

Something was off today

By Gerry |

We come here frequently but today was a hot mess. The sushi rice, on all of our rolls was very wet. Every time we picked up a section of a roll it instantly disintegrated…..what we ended up with was a soupy mess…chopsticks were useless. We called this to the attention of our server and her response was “sorry, sorry”. No offer to make it right. First time being disappointed here….

Sushi Bar

By BoatLife |

Dinner for two at the sushi bar. The gyoza from the kitchen was well-prepared and we love sitting at the sushi bar to watch the chefs carefully select the freshest fish for your dinner! Spicy tuna and a few of the house special rolls- all were kindly crafted and handed directly to us. We also ordered a bottle of the house cold sake; which was very pleasant with our meal.

So Fresh!

By ArtieDart |

Really good sushi and sashimi. Very fresh ingredients. I think the prices are good for the large rolls. The staff is polite and helpful.

Great for all the family

By thelittleburiers |

This was our first family experience of sushi. The tempura kept our youngest daughter happy whilst The rest of us thoroughly enjoyed the sushi. The "rolls" were especially good. The cost for all of us was just over $70 which I reckon is good value - we left well satisfied.

Great specialty sushi

By SmartBunny |

Their speciallty rolls were all very good. Would go there again next time we're in the Point Loma area.

I...Love...This...Place

By taace1i1a |

My friend and I went here just because we heard good things and we wanted to check out Shelter Island. It was awesome! There's never been a wait, and the service is good. Nothing to rave about, but definitely no complaints. The menu has plenty of options and most importantly the ingredients are fresh. Their tempura is really good, especially the shrimp. We get different crazy rolls each time. The caterpillar, spicy tuna, and a bunch of other ones. All of them have been really good. The prices are really good too, for the quality! Each time it's been about 50 bucks, and we're left stuffed to the gills. We always get an appetizer, about three rolls, and a few individuals. We haven't gotten drinks, so I'm not sure how the pricing is on those. Anyways, go, it's great!!

Two Visits on a Three-Day Trip to San Diego!

By DennyCraneEsq |

My wife and I love Umi Sushi. We eat here whenever we are in San Diego. This time, we had two of our three San Diego dinners at Umi. The fish is very fresh, well prepared, and attractively served. My wife enjoyed a chirashi bowl, while I went with an unagi bowl and some sushi.

Umi Sushi

By sharon d |

Much better restaurants for sushi than this one. Will never go there again. Hot, stuffy, service poor at best. Very unpleasant. Do not recommend.

Good Sushi

By Sitko |

Very good quality sushi. Service and surroundings average, but food was very good with lots of choice.

Delicious food. Good service.

By glenellenlady |

I eat at Japanese restaurants whenever possible so I think I know good food. I was not disappointed. Large menu with good choices.

Big portions... Good taste!

By Arlynn79 |

My husband and I took me out to check out this restaurant at Shelter Island. Ordinary looking outside but it was so cute inside. We ordered the Umi Signature roll and the super Charger (oyster with umi, salmon roe and quail egg).... it was sooooo yummy! Loved the seaworld roll too! Their sushi sort of leveled up the usual rolls im used to.... OVERALL... I will definitely go back to try their other sushi rolls and if im up to it... their sushi boat!!!!!

Superb sushi

By Marji0821 |

Had a truly enjoyable meal here after a busy day of sightseeing. Service was pleasant and friendly as well.

Americanized Sushi

By Eric D |

I was disappointed with this place despite its reputation. The style and food were the "Denny's of Sushi". Big portions with lots of flash and style, but not particularly good. I went with a big group- it was good for that.

Tasty sushi, good price.

By Gerardo A |

Went dinner with my wife, it was late on the night and we found it to be one of the few places open around that area of SD, We enjoyed the top quality sushi, the setting could be a little bit better and perhaps the fact that they were running an NBA game didn't help to create a "consistent" ambient. Anyway the sushi was so good that we were impressed, and the icing of the cake was the ice cream tempura we had for desert, i highly recommend it to anyone visiting this restaurant.

Nice surprise

By RegMeno |

I was staying at the Bay Club hotel and needed to find a dinner location that I could walk to. I found Umi Sushi and peaked in and it looked busy with a reasonable priced sushi. I sat at a table but after about 5 minutes or so with no service I jumped to sushi bar. Sushi was good but the the rolls well they were more like logs! They were very good and I left stuffed. Wish it was in Dallas so I could go back. Highly reccomended.

Great "local" food near Shelter Island

By Patric G |

I wasn't sure whether I'd like the sushi as I don't eat it. However, the baked rolls are fantastic!! I really enjoyed the food and the atmosphere in here. It is a wonderful place to have a dinner with friends, as we were, and relax after a day in the city. Plus, it's in a part of old San Diego that feels more like you are a local while being from out of town. Loved it!!

sushiiiii

By yohan h |

my favorite sushi place in San Diego, a big restaurant with no waiting list. is not one of those 50% discount places.... very good presentation. the only problem is, parking is always full, but theres street parking. thanks umi sushi!!

Best sushi

By Margo0621 |

Usually we like to have dinner at different places when we are on vacation. But after we tried sushi at Umi sushi on our first vacation day, we came back 3 more times. We had Umi house roll, seafood salad, miso seafood soup, house sake and more.... Everything was 5 stars! I would love to have such a nice sushi place in MN.

Huge American Sushi

By BiancaCinelli |

The place is big and there is always room for everyone, the fish was fresh but the quality of the rolls didn't amaze whatsoever, they get destroyed as soon as you pick them with your chopsticks and there is simply too much rice. I wish I had tried a soup or something better to write a better review but sorry this place didn't live up for long for me.

If you’re hungry for great sushi, eat here

By cabski316 |

While staying on Shelter Island, my husband and I decided to try this place. It was one of the best meals we’ve had in a while. We sat at the sushi bar and watched our sushi chef work his magic. Everything was very fresh and incredibly delicious. The restaurant is comfortable, but not fancy -- and everything is priced just right. I’d return to this place in a heartbeat if we lived in the San Diego area. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

You will not be disappointed here if you are a sushi affectionate. If you aren't they do have other dishes to accommodate other seafood palates.

Very Good Sushi Served Well

Met friends here often for lunch when last I lived in San Diego but hadn't visited in several years. Wanted sushi for my last night in town since it's tough to get decent sushi where I live now and Umi was convenient to where I was staying. Bottom line: it remains as good as ever, both service and food. Will definitely continue to visit when in town in the future. Highly recommend!

Fresh and delicious sushi and udon

By Brown_Samantha |

We ordered the seafood udon and various sushi: unagi, maguro, spicy scallops with jalapeno peppers and sriracha sauce, ai roll (crab, cucumber, avocado, and salmon). The udon had plenty of seafood (shrimps, calamari, and crab), with broth that was flavorful. Also came with a tempura shrimp. This was served first while we waited for the sushi chef to prepare the rest of our sushi. The unagi sushi was the BEST we've ever had. So delicious. The only negative about this place is that the waitress staff was confused. We were ignored at first, then 2 people came to take our order. Different people delivered our sushi and food. Maybe they were tag teaming. We kept the menu so we can order more if needed, but the waitress brought our check so we didn't order more as we didn't wanted to wait as the original sushi order took awhile. Total dinner came to $54, including taxes and gratuity.

Family Dinner

By RobG |

We had a good dinner. The sushi was fresh and quickly served after our order was taken. The prices are fair for the food you get. The only reason we do not give it a perfect score is the waitress was slow taking our drink and dinner order. She also always had to be asked for drink refills. Other servers there seemed on the ball. It was just luck of the draw.

Wow!

The sushi here was excellent and the portions were unbelievably big. The specialty rolls were awesome and the spicy tuna was really good too. I would recommend trying this restaurant.

Great sushi and atmosphere, family friendly

By Jim R |

Umi Sushi has an impressive menu with creative sushi selections along with standard and special sashimi options. The wait staff was excellent. There were many families along with a later football crowd, all handled easily by the staff. Check out the web site and the menu options which are impressive for a group of diverse tastes.

Authentic Japanese dining

We've enjoyed this restaurant several times with friends and business companions. The service is excellent. The food presentation is an art form - the chefs know their craft!

Authentic sushi

The best sushi this side of town. Great service and food at a reasonable price. All my out of town coworkers go to Umi when sushi is desired. High recommended.

Very good food, fair service and atmosphere

By Hurstfamily5 |

Very good sushi for a fair price- I had the crunch dragon roll- excellent and my daughter had beef fried rice- okay. Service was okay as was the atmosphere but I would recommend based on quality sushi and good prices.

Loved it

I will keep this one simple. Very good Sushi (and I've had a lot) not the best I've had but very good. If you're in San Diego, give Umi Sushi a try. Not too pricey either about $$

Lively neighbourhood sushi

Popped here while in town on business. Excellent, interesting and varied sushi dishes, cracking host, who spent half the night playing drinking games over the bar with various customers. Lovely, lively joint.

Excellent!

This place is fantastic; the best meal I had on Shelter Island during my vacation. The Sapporo beer was very cold too. The sushi chefs as masterful and the service was good.

Unattentive Server, Micro Glass of Wine, But Good Food

By aznails |

We have eaten here about 5 times now and the food is consistently good. A couple of negatives on this last visit: Our server never came to our table to ask how things were. She'd come to the table to drop off our food or drink and that was it. I had to hunt her down a couple of times. Also, for $4.50 you get a tiny glass of wine that is about 3 gulps. I could easily have drank 4 or 5 of them, but not at $4.50 per (small) glass. Finally, the menu print was so tiny, I couldn't read it, even with my strong reader glasses on! The waitress had to tell me what was on the menu. I will definitely return the next time I am in the San Diego/Shelter Island area, but will order beer instead of wine, and hopefully get a different waitress!

below average

in San diego near the ocean and all the fish is farm raised. i get it for fish that doesn't live here like salmon.. but its the Scottish farm raised no King. the tuna which is in abundance here was the dyed red chewey farm stuff. they need to step-it up. fisherman sell fish two blocks away every morning.

Delicious!!

The food is delicious. They have a wide selection so you will definitely find something you love. The Crazy Boy roll is crave-worthy. Yum!

Excellent!

I go to this place every time I come to San Diego. Straight from the airport. You can't get a yelow tail shashimi like theirs on the east coast, and I go for my traditional double yellow tail shashimi order every time. They actually go out of their way to give you different cuts from diffreent parts of the fish when they detect someone who enjoys it. My wife goes for their seafood salad, which is excellent, and their yammy crunches. Everything priced for "normal people", but quality and generocity of portions are superior! I did bring friends on several occasions, perhaps the place was a lesser hit with those of them who must have a super-contemporaty ambience, but at the end all of them loved Umi.

Great sushi spot!

By Jennadah |

I am always pretty skeptical of sushi restaurants and went here based on the reviews. The outside is nothing special, and I was pleasantly surprised upon entering! I've honestly only eaten sushi (and appetizers) here because the sushi is so good that I haven't wanted to try anything else yet! The fish is of a very high quality and the sushi is well priced for the amount and quality of the dishes. My only complaint is that the service so far seems a tad neglectful, and we had to catch someones attention whenever we need something. The food service has not been slow thiugh. I will keep coming here anytime I am looking for good sushi in the area!

Best sushi

Excellent Sushi and Variety

I eat here anytime I am in San Diego. They have a ton of rolls to choose from and the fish is very fresh. If you sit at the sushi bar you can interact with the sushi chefs. They are very helpful and will even give you samples if you are curious about a certain fish. The cooked food is very good and I highly recommend this restaurant.

Good sushi

Was craving for Japanese food after 4 nights of food on the cruise. Umi was not disappointing at all! Solid tempura and bbq short ribs, sushi rolls are not bad too! little pricey though

yum yum

we sat at the sushi counter and a great meal made in front of us for $22. that also include sake. Located near to the entrance to shelter island

This is an excellent place. Sakuras on is better.

the seafood salad here is excellent. They have a good selection of fish, the white fish is very good and rolls are also good. The teppanyaki is good and the seafood salad excellent.

Local and insanely tasty

I came back to Umi after a few years, and still amazing. The sashimi and chirachi (the best option if you want a lot of fish and rice but without the fuss of sushi shape) were out if this world, I mean outside Japan of course. An out-of-the-Yellow-Brick-road joint, but excellent. I will come back there again.

food was ok. Lotsa rolls. Limited kids menu but the price was decent for the kids portion. The sashimi was good.

Good quality and a lot for you money. Service is good, the only negative is parking, the lot is small or your stuck with street parking.
