Great New Cheesesteak Option

By kiwiandmolly |

This cheesesteak was one of the best I have tried in the city. I chose Cooper Sharp cheese which I believe was a good choice. The meat was tender and flavorful. The bread was delicious, which I expected since its the same that they use at Angelo's. This is definitely a solid choice for an authentic cheesesteak located centrally if visiting the city. They were busy when I was there but have the process of turning the sandwiches out quickly was well tuned. Service was efficient and friendly. I will definitely go back when visiting!

Solid Cheesesteak

Had a cheesesteak with onions, sharp cheese and spicy red peppers. This place is the real deal, delicious! bread was also fantastic. Sandwich was not skimpy on the meat like some places. A few more red peppers would have been nice.

A great cheesesteak option in Reading Terminal!

Looking for a solid cheesesteak spot and you are at Reading Terminal, go to Uncle Gus'! This establishment was started by people who are responsible for DiNic's, Pearl's Oyster Bar, AND Angelo's Pizza! With a leading cast like this, there are a LOT of expectations. This is definitely a no-frills spot. You line up, order your cheesesteak, wait, get it, find a seat, and feast! The pricing can be seen to be a little higher than other typical cheesesteak spots, but the convenience if it being very near to the convention center and fact that it is in a somewhat touristy spot makes sense. As for the cheesesteak, I tried their cheesesteak with Cooper Sharp cheese. The bread they use is the same as Angelo's, which I will say sells one of my favorite cheesesteaks in Philly. The cheesesteak itself tastes pretty good too! I will say they should look to slice up the steak a bit more, as it can be tougher to eat with the larger pieces where it would require extra chewing and a messier experience. Overall, this is another great option and due to that, be prepared to wait during peak times. I suggest that you order here immediately upon coming into Reading Terminal and then browse the area and maybe get a snack/appetizer to pass the time until your order is ready!

10/10 SO GOOD

Soooo yummy! We had multiple different cheesesteaks while visiting Philly and Uncle Gus’s was our favorite. Have to get with the sharp cheese, it makes the sandwich. Along with the most delicious bread out of all of the cheesesteaks spots.

Another Take on a Cheesesteak!

2nd day in Philly! I mean you have to try another Cheesesteak. You can’t just have one and it’s the best you’ve ever had right. Here they scoop some bread out so it holds the ingredients better. The had sweet cherry peppers here. My sandwich had steak, fried onion, cherry pepps, with wiz on a roll with sesame seeds on it. This is the only roll they offer here. The sandwich was awesome. The service was quick and efficient. Everything was correct with our order. I would visit again when I’m in the area.

Yum. A good cheesesteak !

If you are in reading market terminal looking for a cheesesteak, try Uncle Gus's. They only do cheesesteak. Lines can get long, but the unique sesame seed bun is a treat. Choose your cheese and onions or not and enjoy!

Top 5 Cheesesteaks in Philly

By Meghan WF |

I was staying across the street from Reading Terminal for a conference and obviously cannot leave Philadelphia without stopping by for some iconic eats before the long drive home. My original plans for lunch fell through and saw the crowd gathered here. I was concerned that this was because they were the only cheese steak game nearby, but after quickly checking fellow Yelper reviews I decided to give Uncle Gus a chance. Given the cost of food nowadays I thought $18 for what was a massive sandwich was very reasonable especially considering red meat is a more expensive commodity. The ordering line moved quickly and the staff were appropriately courteous. Let me tell you Uncle Gus has the assembly line down. There was easily a crew of eight people working there and minimally six working on making sandwiches. Despite having 5+ people ahead of me waiting for their orders we all received our food within five minutes and it was hot and fresh. I ordered on a Sunday around 12:45 PM during peak hours. I decided to enjoy my cheesesteak outside. And yes of course I asked for onions and wiz. First of all props to Uncle Gus for the crunchy sesame hoagie bread. It is a nice texture contrast with the cheesy onion steak deliciousness. The bread was crunchy on the outside, but soft and chewy on the inside. A perfect combo to house the messy inner sandwich contents. The steak was nicely chopped, tender, and the mix of perfectly sauteed onions merrily mixed together in cheese wiz was great. All of my sandwich ingredients were perfectly incorporated and they did not skimp on the wiz as evidenced in my photo below. My only critique is perhaps the steak could be a bit more seasoned. There are a few other spots in Philly that might be a little higher on my cheese steak rankings, but Uncle Gus and team you have my respect for a very solid cheesesteak that will keep my cravings satiated until my next Philly trek.

Dinner Experience

On the Reading Terminal Market, Uncle Gus’ Steaks is definitely one of the best stands. The boss is on the iron board to baked the steak, whispering with the smell of the nose, the light of listening to let people eat fingers. The brown beef sheets are soft and juicy, mixed with roasted onions and melted onions, each dish is rich and full of aroma. The bread is soft inside, perfectly absorbs the juice but does not moisten, and the salty aroma and aroma mistake the Philadelphia unique soul taste. I prefer that kind of moment of just entering, the heat with the melting sense of smoothness, so that people can not stop one by one. It’s not just a steak sandwich, it’s more like a tribute to the taste of Philadelphia.

Thank you UG staff!

My sister and I had one night here in Philly and couldn’t wait to go to the reading terminal market, little did we know they closed so early! Tonight (5/13) we came in 10 mins before everything closed. The staff at Uncle Gus’ tonight made our night! They were welcoming and friendly even though I’m sure they were all ready to clean up and close out. We walked past so many other places we wanted to try and everyone avoided any eye contact and went about shutting everything down, but not the amazing people here. Thank you to all the wonderful staff members tonight. Of course the food was the best too!

The best.

I've lived in Philly and Philly area for 56 years. I've eaten my share of cheesesteaks. This is the best one I ever had. Hands-down

Cheesesteak Heaven

What a great cheesesteak in the Old Reading Terminal building just below part of the convention center. Our local guys said it was the place, the longest line proved that. Great cheesesteak in steak sandwiches, cool environment, just plain great.

The best in all of Philly

By _tomnguyen001 |

This is one of the greatest cheesesteak joints in all of Philly. We did a mini cheesesteak crawl over three days and this one is the best. Great seasoned meat, perfect amount of cheese, great seeds roll. A bit on a higher price point if you add in additional toppings - like mushrooms (highly recommended). A bit of a long wait but the line moves fast. Just as a FYI - this is the same owner as the one owns Angelo's pizza in little Italy.

Lives Up to the Hype!

My wife and I have embarked on a cheesesteak eating tour of the Philly area and finally made it to the much heralded Uncle Gus at the Reading Terminal. On a Tuesday afternoon at 1:00, there was a decent line but the Gus' staff are very efficient and my order was taken almost immediately. We went with the most popular option (steak/cooper sharp/with onions), this greatly speeds up the order because they are cranking out more of these than the different options. I had our sandwich in hand in less than 10 minutes. This is a great cheesesteak! Not the biggest in length or the most stuffed one we've had but definitely one of the tastiest. The ratios (meat/cheese/onions) on our sandwich were excellent and the meat was flavored and chopped perfectly. Then you get to the roll which is also fresh baked perfection, seeded and chewy on the outside and soft inside (I believe these rolls are made by Angelo's). This is a noteworthy cheesesteak that needs to be on every cheesesteak guru's list. Highly recommend!

Trashed

By Charles043 |

Pretty quick order and short wait for delivery. Meat and onions (see photos) were pre-cooked and then reheated. Meat had no taste save for overpowering presence of sesame seeds from the slightly stale roll. Skimpy with the cheese. Tossed the remaining 25% to trash.

Good Philly Cheese Steak but I’ve had better

By K_Traveler |

In the heart of the city at Reading Terminal is Uncle Gus Steaks ( literally right inside one of the entry doors ) is where it is located. The Philly Cheese Steak I had was 7 on a 1-10 scale. Good but not Philadelphias best.

Quality cheesesteak

The best cheesesteaks are in Philly, so was looking forward to this one. Does not disappoint. Lots of seasoned steak on a great hoagie roll. Very satisfying,

Philly Cheese Steak to scream

My first Philly Cheese Steak and I must say I will remember it for a long time. Amazing, huge and tasty. soft bread, tasty meat and melted cheese that melts at first bite. Simple but rich in taste, it is the perfect dish for those who want to taste a true symbol of American tradition, not to be missed if you pass by Philly, it is definitely worth the 18 dollars base and then you can add other ingredients but I recommend not to overdo it with the tastes.
