The Best in Houston

By TravelSheryl |

I've been eating sushi in Houston for 20 years and hands down, Uptown Sushi is the best I've ever had here. I've been there four times and each time the sushi and the service have been excellent. When you walk in the door, you don't think you're in Houston. It's very hip and I anticipated an attitude. Not at all. From the hostesses to the bartenders to the wait staff, everyone has always been very friendly and accommodating. The only non-sushi item I've had is the Ribeye Roll and it's great too. I was told it's their specialty. The first time I ordered it, it was a bit overcooked for me, so the next time, I made sure to ask that it be cooked medium rare and it was perfect. For Houston, the sushi prices are high, but you get what you pay for. It's not what you'll find along Westheimer! I highly recommend Uptown Sushi.

Loved it

Great ambience & decor, a creative and delicious menu and of course excellent service. Our server Grace was spot on - attentive and friendly. I will return for more.

This place is a joke

By NRS2011 |

This place is a JOKE! I brought a group of 7 people for lunch this week and I’m sorry that I did. The service was awful. The waiter acted like he had somewhere better to be and had an attitude every time one of my guests would ask for silverware. Some of the guests DID NOT order sushi (so obviously they need utensils to eat)!!! Why does he think that a sushi restaurant has an entire section of cooked Japanese entrees? To accommodate a wide range of diners. The waiter was a complete worthless moron. The waiter must have asked our table if anyone wanted wine or a cocktail ½ a dozen times. Most guests refused, but the waiter kept asking. It seemed that the only thing he was interested in was selling us drinks and trumping up the bill with bar/alcohol charges (for LUNCH). It was pretty pathetic and got very annoying! Now for the food quality…. On a scale of 1-10, it was 4, maybe even a 3! It’s been a while since I’ve been to Uptown, but I don’t recall the food being so poor and mediocre! Just to describe a few of the items we ordered - our Lobster and Shrimp Roll appetizers were so greasy, they were almost inedible. The sushi nigiri pieces were tiny and most had a fishy aftertaste that was disturbing (especially the red snapper and escolar). The unagi was undercooked. The real snow crab tasted more like the imitation kani crab. I think they mixed imitation crab and mayo into our handrolls to mask the taste. The hot entrees and bento boxes were just as bad. My guests said that their food was “fine”, but they were clearly just being kind, because most left at least ½ of their dishes or sushi rolls untouched. To add insult to injury of such a bad experience, the prices were WAY too high for sushi and bento boxes. Very disappointing; will never return. For great sushi, I recommend AKA Sushi or Azuma. Both are fantastic!

Back again for sushi.... Good for dates but the bar is closed.... Average ticket is 25 a person.... No wait at lunch

Excellent sushi!!

By Sergio P |

Best sushi eaten out of Japan. The 7 and a half was awesome. We drunk margaritas (average) and then Japanese beer. Very nice olace to go.

Outstanding sushi.

By Sander D |

We went for dinnerhwre with a group of seven colleagues from Europe, Asia and North America. Two of the colleagues were not huge sushi fans and had a chicken dish, which wasn't that exceptional. However why you come here, of course, is the sushi. We had a chef's selection of sushi and sashimi. Quality was excellent, and even the real food snobs in the group were really impressed. The service was quick and efficient. Can recommend a visit.

Decent sushi

I was craving sushi and I decided to give Kata Robata a break so Uptown Sushi here I come! The restaurant is spaced out and the ambiance is chic. If you're going for dinner usually the lights are dim and it sets off a romantic vibe so I would suggest bringing a date here and asking for a booth, BUT as high class as this restaurant is.. you would think they would upgrade their booths and renovate the seats! There's holes in the seats and it makes the booths uncomfortable if you are a girl and you are wearing a skirt or shorts. Service: (5/5) Service has never let me down! Always attentive waitresses and waiters. I've came here about 2-3 times before this official check in. I wasn't a huge yelper yet more of a creeper and creeping on reviews but now I am an Elite member so I must write and let you guys know how my experience went! Drinks: (5/5) So, I'm kind of obsessed with Lychi Martinis.. MF and Uptown hands down makes the best Lychi martinis! I loved how they still left the ice on top and it adds a nice crunch! These hit you later. Food: -Yellow tail: (3.5/5)The Yellow tail was off the signature nigiri. There wasn't anything special about this to me but my hubby wanted to order it. -Kobe Cubes: (4.5/5)This by far has got to be the best thing on their menu. I suggest you eat this whole.. do not cut it in half do not separate it.. just stick it in and eat it!!! Everything mixed together is just explosive. -Lobster and shrimp rolls: (4/5) Hubby ordered this and he highly suggests you try it with the green sauce. It's spicy! The rolls are hot so let it cool down before you stuff your face. -Zubi: I didn't try this. Hubby ordered it. -Millieum: (2/5) Definitely NOT a fan with this one.. I almost threw up trying to finish it because you don't waste food. Especially sushi because you're paying for what you eat. -Lickety split: (4/5) Delish! Booths need to be updated. Ambiance is chic. Cute sushi place!

Ambiance - yes; Sushi - probably no

By agoral |

This place is for rather social attraction than eatery. If you really like sushi try Miyako @ Westheimer or some other joints. Now, if you want to enjoy high class atmosphere, like vegie and cream cheese rolls and not really into raw fish - Uptown Sushi is your place - go 4 it!

Accommodating

By Cyndi S |

I recently learned that I'm allergic to shrimp, which I've eaten my entire adult life. I wanted sushi and was careful to choose rolls that had no shrimp in them. (Although it killed my soul, I LOVE shrimp, apparently it doesn't love me) I wasn't sure about other shellfish, my allergy test confirmed I wasn't allergic to scallops but crab, lobster and crawfish were big unknowns to me. I chose one with soft shell crab and king crab and explained to the waitress my allergy. She delivered my amazing rolls assuring me that NO shrimp had touched my plate and I had a delicious dinner with no side affects confirming my ability to still enjoy these delights! NOTE -my allergy to shrimp isn't anaphylactic or I wouldn't have tested my other shellfish allergies on this restaurant.

First Class experience

By Wahoocatcher |

The atmosphere is intriguing. The waitstaff were knowledgeable and on time. Food was fantastic. Take a date, take a friend, take a colleague - you will love it!

It is but it's not

By Yosef L |

This restaurant serves what looks like fresh fishes but the taste is far from being the real thing their tuna or toro looks different but almost taste the same .there is something missing in th whole sushi they are serving.maybe it's an in place but really very disappointing

Incredible quality and a Houston classic!

By mariarL1032VP |

Absolutely delicious! Everything we’ve tried at Uptown has been amazing. The black cod is particularly delicious and the sushi is so fresh. The avocado miso soup is one of my favorites, plus the service is just 100%. Overall, a classic and a must stop when we visit Houston.

Nice food, reasonable price, let down by waitress!

By SamantaCa |

I love sushi and have eaten at some of the best sushi restaurants in the world (much to the horror of my bank manager). The food here wasn't exceptional to me but of a very good standard and at a very reasonable price. The server on the other hand was not very attentive or present during our meal nor particularly polite or charming - suddenly found the time to come and talk to us the ask "was something wrong with the service" as apparently people usually tip more than 10%. We understand that things work differently in the US and you are expected to tip regardless of service standard (this doesn't happen in Europe where you tip if you had excellent service),however I think for the level of service we received (average to poor for a restaurant of its calibre) ten percent was way more than fair. On top of this asking for more money was probably the most cringe worthy moment I have ever spent in a restaurant. Very embarrassing, extremely rude. To add to the horror, we heard her do they exact same act with another table! Left a bad taste in the mouth after an otherwise pleasant meal.

Best Sushi. Great Atmosphere.

By BigDen51 |

Had a wonderful experience sampling numerous dishes from the dinner menu. Very fresh and excellent balance of flavored!

Not worth it

By Angela C |

Stop by on the way home from airport at night. Extremely dark from outside as the windows are covered with darkening drapes. Interior is trendy with liquor bar at the front left side and sushi bar toward the back. Had sushi, sushi roll and butternut lobster bisque soup. Sushi was fresh but nothing extraordinary. Butternut part of soup smooth and flavorful. Lobster bites were rubbery, tasted nothing like lobster at all. No worth a special visit for sure.

The best for sushi!

By Alisa A |

I travel to the Houston on business a couple times for the year, and I always make sure I go Uptown Sushi. The rolls are are top notch, service and ambience are great. My favorite are the Signature Nigiri. I've not tested better anywhere else. It's worth the visit. I plan to go back!

Great remodel, kept concept basically the same

By houtxgal2018 |

They did a great job remodeling and opened it up a bit by adding windows and changing the ‘wall’ between the bar area and main dining area. They freshened it up with these changes. The menu is basically the same which is just fine.

Excellent sushi and fun atmosphere

By winelover1 |

I have been going here for years. The sushi is always excellent and atmosphere always lively. Highly recommend!

Gorgeous

By FrankPiccy |

It's one of the best place where I have eaten sushi. Simply fantastic. Waiters very kind, atmosphere very nice, food simply amazing, excellent. The only bad thing was the air conditioning, too cold.

Excellent sushi!

By odavollan |

This was a place with amazing sushi! We are definately going back here. Cozy and relaxed atmosphere where you can enjoy a fantastic meal.

Diverse menu with very good sushi and cocktails

By 4wwtravelmore |

We had a late dinner here on a Friday night after picking up friends at IAH. Service was attentive but not pushy, cocktail menu fun & interesting. We had several appetizers, sushi, mussels, panko crusted eggs and tempura. Everything was fresh & lovely. Will return!

My favorite Japanese place

By Harris14 |

Always good and consistent. We eat there at least every month. Get crowded later in the evening. Try to make a reservation or eat at the sushi bar.

Interesting Place

By Larry E |

Not your normal sushi joint that concentrates on the sushi. Has the feel of a higher end night club that has sushi. Food was just OK but atmospher helped.

Galleria Sushi

By Malachy F |

The uptown crowd at this Uptown restaurant know what they like, because this is the best sushi place in the Galleria. Try the 71/2 roll and you will always want to come back for more.

Alwayd the best dinners

By Brenda L |

Amazing food and service! Always go with my husband for date nights. Rhe sushi is very fresh and the avocsdo ribeye is the best!!!

Great 1st time experence

By GW1 |

Awesome first time experience! The waitress was very helpful and made suggestion that I couldn't have been happier with. The food and atmosphere were great.

Excellent Sushi

By Miguel E |

We were looking for an Italian restaurant in the Uptown park area. My son saw Uptown Sushi. We went thinking it was a very expensive place. To our surprise, the quality, excellent taste of their rolls and nigiri (it was delicious) and the service. The price was very good too. We will be going back soon!!!

Great date night sushi

By ThatJayson |

My wife and I visited Uptown Sushi while on a little getaway at the Houstonian hotel. The atmosphere was great for a romantic dinner for two. We started with two edamame (one regular and one spicy). The spicy was just the right amount of spice. My wife had a cucumber martini which she enjoyed and I had their hot saki which was good. We both ordered some rolls for the main course. All of them were fresh and delicious. For desert I opted for the fried cheese cake - normally more of a healthy no desert kind of guy, but it was a good opportunity to try something I haven't had before. It was decent, but I think I'll stick with the non-fried version going forward. All in all we had just what the doctor ordered, a great romantic dinner with great food and drinks. Enjoy!!

Impressed

By RichardUpshall |

Did not want to have to go far, and fancied sushi so here we went. Excellent start with lychee martini cocktails. On to the food, we did a kind of tapas style japanese selection through the evening and all of it was very good. We tried the salmon and tuna sashimi, perfect, a selection of maki rolls, including crawfish which were really tasty and appeared to be made to order. Not too heavy on the rice so really enjoyable. They offered a funky hot rock to quickly cook our own thinly sliced beef which went down a treat too. The food overall excellent, nice bottle of Cloudy Bay for 50 bucks was appreciated and some very good warm Saki as well. Four of us ate and drank, and I thought good value for Uptown and upscale in Houston.

Dinner

By Deb L |

The sushi was very fresh. I had the spiro the sauce was very spicy, which I like. I had the salad with ginger dressing, it's a spring salad not just iceberg. It's a good size salad. I also had a side of edamame. I ordered the edamame first and it came out last. The service was disappointing.

kinky kinda!

By Nicole S |

kinky kinda!

Excellent choice of Fusion Japanese dishes!

By Oliver_Zeitoun |

I would easily vote this restaurant as one of the best Japanese restaurants in Houston. The food was excellent. Service was good. Don't miss on UNI, kobe cubes and truffle tuna.

Best sushi in town

By Ashok |

Was not a big fan of sushi.....but this got me think all over again ....I just loved the sushi out here.....a must visit place if you are a sushi lover

Food is Perfect / Cocktails are extremely tasty.

By TallSasha |

I just started eating sushi due to another over-priced place in Houston. I stumbled upon Uptown Sushi and have probably eaten there every week for the last 2 months. (And I'm not exaggerating). The food is excellent. (The Spicy Tuna Roll is my favorite). The Cucumber Cocktail is extremely tasty. I only gave it 4 starts due to service. I have had some visits where the service was slow. However, I have found an amazing server. Ask for Katie. She was excellent and even suggested a great roll that I will order next time. The restaurant is a nice, quiet atmosphere. Their "restaurant week" menu was also extremely tasty. I seriously have not had a roll that wasn't yummy.

I'm hooked!

By LRIzzy |

I visited Uptown Sushi three times during my 5 days in Houston. I can't recommend it enough! Everything on the menu is delish and make sure you try the green tea mochi ice cream for dessert. I can't wait for my next trip to Houston.

Best presented Sushi

By Susan H |

Fabulous Sushi. Very pleasant service and very professional. We went for lunch but I wanted to return for a very classy dinner. The atmosphere is exceptional , not at all like most sushi places

Excellent, fresh & hip

By Omar R |

This was my first visit to this sushi bar. I was very pleasantly surprised by the atmosphere and the very chic decor. The service was very prompt and the food was very fresh and delicious. The presentation of the food was equally impressive. It's definitely on my repeat list.

New Age Sushi

By PinotSeller |

Service was spot on! Very prompt! Not very personal, but OK. Sushi was very edgy, not so traditional. Cool atmosphere. Quality was good and enjoyed everything. Thought it was a bit put on for us. Plus, the guy with the escort in the booth opposite to us really was creepy.

great sushi, so so service, and lacking ambiance

By JD703 |

Very creative and yummy sushi dishes. A+ on food. Server was pretty clueless. Didn't know much about the menu or bar drinks availability. Not very attentive either. The AC in the place must have been set at 65 degrees. Yes, you got the keep the fresh fish cold, but don't freeze out your clientele. We even asked them to get the room temp to normal - to no avail.

Best Sushi in Houston

By David R |

I've become a regular at Uptown Sushi whenever I'm in Houston, and it never disappoints. The service is decent, and the decor is a bit stylized for my country boy taste, but the food is incredible. The conventional sushi is perfect, but the Teryaki beef Maki are out of this world. The booths are a bit oddly shaped ... ask for a conventional table.

Excellent service and fine sashimi

By SarahElizabeth2015 |

I am a sashimi eater and more apt to come here for lunch than dinner. The sashimi is always high quality and they have the fattier selections I am seeking. Although it is not my number one choice for sushi in Houston, I will say that it is quite notable for its service; I am apt to stop in while run I errands and the wait staff are always attentive and careful to get my order right. I think the atmosphere is better suited to evening dining, as I find it a bit dark and not entirely lively during the day.

Amazing Habanero Escargot

By spjalapeno |

OMG...you must try the habanero infused escargot, they have several infused escargot but the habanero was the best!!! They have a great wine selection and I can't wait to go back!!!

very good to excellent

By RSM6300 |

we ate here twice on a recent trip to Houston. The sushi was very good and the rolls were inventive. The decor is beautiful and table are far apart, so you do not feel stuffed and crowded. Service was very friendly and very very prompt. Highly recommend.

Beautiful Presentation and Delicious

By Wendy H |

I used to love eating here once a week. I had not been back in quite awhile for no particular reason, just life getting in the way, but I did go back recently and the atmosphere is still great, it was a bit noisy for my liking now, in the bar area......but the food is still good. Just a bit pricey for me to come eat every week. Now it's more like a treat to go there.

Business lunch today

By Gary R |

Let me start by saying , I love sushi. The sushi here is worth coming for It's creative while not being terminally unique They also have the traditional rolls everyone loves Service is good not great Here is the negative , it's flipping pricey. 5 guys. No booze. 312 with 50 of that being a tip If you love sushi it's worth it but be aware of price before you come. Last thing, portions are decent. Not huge.

Free porn while I'm eating? No thanks.

We had an awful experience. On our wedding anniversary. Went to Uptown for a late night meal. Hostess was nice, took us to a table for 2. As it was along a wall, there was one seat on a bench and one chair. I go to sit on the bench, only to find it littered with a used straw and orange peels from a drink. So no one cleaned off our area. Nice. Husband switched with me, since I didn't want a damp seat. As I sit in the chair, I immediately see why the bench area is a mess - a couple at the table next to us. They are both sitting on the bench side, basically on top of each other. I do not say this lightly. It was exceptionally inappropriate, including loud and gross noises. The highlight was not knowing where her hands were, since they were not visible. Before you ask 'why not ask to see the manger?' - let me say they were sitting with a check on the table, so I assumed they were done and - based on the intimacy level - on their way to a more private space. By the time I realized this would go on, we had already ordered food and did not want to put the waiter in a spot where he would be stuck with a bill for food that had gone in. (He was very nice, and if you have waited tables, you know what I'm talking about.) They finally left, but I was so unhappy and uncomfortable I didn't even taste my food. We have no issues with affection, but this was more on par with an adult entertainment establishment. I can say the martini I had was very good, and the waiter was nice. I tried to contact Uptown directly. Emailed the restaurant, got no reply. I would think a complaint about a littered seating area, as well as management ignoring the behavior of people clearly stepping over the line, would elicit a response. The lack of customer service after the fact is just as bad as the experience we had that night. While dining out is mainly the food, plenty of other factors go into the overall experience. Certain things can ruin a meal in an instant, this is a prime example. Luckily, we will always have a place to eat, since Houston is a city full of great sushi places. But this isn't one of them.

not for people in a hurry

By mrrogertheshrubber |

I went on a sunday night. Restaurant was less than half full. 4 cooks in the sushi pit. Those guys were working as fast as they could but I still waited forever for my orders. Seems like the kitchen is either too small for the restaurant or the dishes are too elaborate and take too long to prepare. I can not fault the kitchen staff. Those guys were working hard and knew what they were doing. Even though I sat at the sushi counter the waiter took my orders, went somewhere to give it to the sushi chefs, and then received it from them and brought me my orders. I ordered a salmon roll- a very simple order. Anywhere else, if I sat at the counter I would expect to have it within 2 minutes. Here it took 15 minutes. If you are expecting a Japanese-style sushi counter this is not the place for you. Quality of the food was good. Most menu choices are Americanized but in Houston that is to be expected. Seafood was fresh. Waitstaff was not very attentive. At one point I saw a woman ask one of the sushi chefs to find her waitress since the waitress was AWOL. I had a different waiter and he wasn't much better. Didn't seem like much of a good value to me. This area of Houston seems very expensive though so what do I know. I would recommend the owners find some more attentive waitstaff and add one more chef.

Great sushi with a very special ambiance

By luvtodiveVA |

Upscale, trendy, well-made sushi . . . it will not disappoint. Take someone special to dine in this very attractive establishment.

Awesome Sushi Restaurant

By HoustonFoodAndWine |

High quality food, great atmosphere, good service, and solid menu options. This place is definitely going to be one of our new "go-to" sushi joints whenever the craving hits...which is almost weekly.

Wonderful place!

By Fernando R |

Nice ambience, beautiful people, wonderful sushi. Quality of the fish is difficult to match. also good wine list.

Best Sushi in Houston, but please bring back the butter crab roll!

By houstonitalian |

This is the most consistently great sushi place in Houston. All of the sashimi is incredible and the rolls are top notch as well. My only complaint is that they removed the best roll off the menu recently. Please bring back the butter crab roll!

Great Sushi in Houston

By Bob c |

Excellent sushi and excellent atmosphere. Went solo loloking for a sushi restaurant & found Uptown Sushi. The restaurant is nicely done and has a great upscale atmosphere. Ordered a variety of nigiri sushi and each piece was excellent and well prepared. A must try if you like sushi and are in Houston.

Good bar

By AUSAGUY007 |

The bartenders were nice... It's kind of a stuck up crowd... The food was good but a little high priced for sushi.

Great Place

By Paul R |

The sushi was as fresh as it could be and the drinks flowed well. The staff is very friendly. Best sushi place in Houston.

Very pricey... careful what you order

By Julie B |

Uptown was highly recommended by a colleague so we decided to try it. One of the men in my party asked for a simple small assortment of sashimi because he really did not know sushi - I nearly choked when the bill came and I saw the waitress or sushi chef selected blue fin tuna for him without asking. To me that is underhanded. In all the meal ranged from average to outstanding. My warm salmon salad was OK, nothing to write home about but my colleague raved about his bisque.

Excellant

By MND1344 |

The food was ExcellantGreat and very fresh. The rolls are very large and all creative. The scallop sashimi was great too. Go early as tough to get in and get a parking space at lunch

Best Sushi in Houston!

By Adriana S |

My husband and I had a wonderful evening flavoring their awesome fresh sushi!! And a great atmosphere. We will definitely go back here!

great place, great food and great staff

By elpatronloco |

Great place. Yellowtail is flawless and obviously flown that week. Fresh as can be. Best sushi in Houston, end of story.

Ain't no fish bait

By Keith B |

I really enjoyed the experience at Uptown Sushi. Great ambiance of fancy but not snooty. Very pleasant staff. They were warm, welcoming, and patient. They food was delicious with plenty of choices. I recommend Uptown Sushi, but be careful sliding into a booth. Snagging the table cloth and spilling everything on the table is a possibility or actually a reality...

GREAT!

By Dr Jil R |

This restaurant is swanky, beautiful, excellent food and beautiful slim women!

A real miss.

By GaryTLeach |

I have had great food at this restaurant for many years. However, take out last Saturday night was terrible. We had two rolls that were not fresh and not edible. Called for the manager twice to for voice my displeasure and he never called back. That is not acceptable. Not going back to Uptown Sushi ever again and suggest you don't go as well.

Great sushi, drinks and atmosphere

By FLandry915 |

Very nice sushi restaurant located in Uptown Park shopping center in the Galleria area. Modern decor and background music added to the ambience. Spicy edamame was tasty and the 7 1/2 roll was the best. I ordered an old fashioned and it was perfectly concocted. Our server was very attentive and friendly.

Great food but turn down the AC

By travelingtheworld013 |

We had a great time on Saturday night over the Memorial weekend, but the AC was so high we were shivering like crazy. Fun and cool atmosphere.

Great sushi, with a different ambience

By tonifad |

In a regular strip mall, you get a surprise when you enter Uptown Sushi. Good ambience, a different experience, and definetely great sushi. Especially did I find the maki rolls tasty, creative, and worth every penny. Thus, if in Houston, Uptown Sushi is up there with the best.

More of a night hang out than rrstuarant .

By Bear4747 |

The night we visited the sushi bar it was very hoppin place. Look like many in there drinking an socializing . We ordered a Yuzu Shrimp which was great but only 4 shrimp. We ordered the Licke de split roll. Very good! Then we order sashimi tune and snapper which were good but small portions. Overall staff was a little slow! I thought prices a bit high. But tasty dinner! I'm sure I will starving in a few minutes.

My money wasn't good enough

By sesspool |

I came in on memorial day. There were only 5 tables being served. The place was empty but as I expected for memorial day. So I'm immediately say down and 1 min goes by, 2 min, 5 min not one server greeted me or took my order. After 5min a man came up to me and gave me water 10 min no one has still come to my table. After 20 MINUTES a white lady and her daughter get sat down across from me and after only 1 minute a server was at their table explaining the menu and making their drink order. After that I got up and left. Apparently my money was not welcomed

Great sushi

By philippew24 |

The card offers both creative and classic sashimi/nigiri and some cooked fish. I went for the classic mainly: Very fresh, beautifully presented. The miso soup was superb. The waitress was great. To be fair it should be 4.5 stars :-). The place has a very modern pleasant decor. My only complaint: It is FREEZING! So bring a sweater, I am serious.

Great atmosphere, bland food

By NCLimey |

I think that the atmosphere is attributable to the location - lots of really cool, exotic cars and attractive, well dressed people, decent music playing (albeit from tinny sounding ceiling speakers). The food was very bland - I ordered rolls that should have had lots of flavor, (Dragon, with eel) but I only really tasted avocado and cucumber. The spoon for the Miso soup had lipstick on it. Was about $33 for around eight rolls, soup and coke. Will go elsewhere for Japanese food if I return.

Sushi 🍥??????

By AUSAGUY007 |

This place is pretty overpriced for the quality... Heard they shut down to remodel but you might want to check on that... This is a place for people to show off its not that great for food

Very good!!!

By Gustavo P |

The place a fusion between Italian and Japanese cuisine! I had a shrimp polenta as entrance that was excelent!!!!!! They have a big variety of traditional and non traditional sushis!! It's worth trying!

Good Sushi. Cool Ambiance.

By A3572SHrobertb |

Nice Sushi restaurant. A little dark for my taste but all and all the restaurant has a cool vibe. Always good service. Never have had a bad meal. Place gets hopping Thursday night.

Consistently fresh and tasty sushi in social space

By Steven M |

The menu has great rolls but the secret is that the virtually any roll can be made if you ask. Stick to the sushi, the cooked dishes are not as special. Excellent bar scene.

Amazing

By jonathan c |

Everything was excellent. The menu was inventive. Every dish that came out was absolute top quality. Highly recommend.

Nice place modern, sushi is good, decent prices

By Luis L |

I've been here before. The architecture is different, open environment, tables conveniently away from each one, lay out designed to see and be seen. Service is fair, a little bit cold on my view. Sushi very good. Prices a little bit on the high side, but you should expect this in a fancy restaurant on Uptown.

Had to try it

By k t |

Had to try this place after walking past. The website was a pain showing no tables, but on just turning up to try, there was plenty of room. So don't be out off. Sushi, sashimi and beef cooked on hot stone at the table ... Wow a lovely meal . Fantastic service from the friendly staff. Will certainly go again.

Sushi at it's best

By Mary Y |

Beautiful location, excellent food. We sat outside on a beautiful night. Our service was good and the food was excellent. I would definitely go back.

Beautiful decor & great sushi!

By Lyn S |

Really enjoyed the variety on the menu. Beautiful decor, good service, good place for a date. We had several thing on the menu and enjoyed all of them.

Innovative ambiance, good & sophisticated sushi, service just fine.

By Luis L |

Very convenient location. Interior is very, very innovative, modern, different, classy. Lay-ou of location of tables allows for both couples and groups without disruption (though the guy from the couple in table next to ours talked too loudly). Sushi was very good. Table service very good, but guy taking the order was not at all willing to support our relative limited knowledge of sushi, and we had to somehow guess from reading the menu. Pricy, but not that much. If you like sushi in a modern environment with lots of light, this is a good place. Looks more a social place than a dedicated restaurant.

Good sushi

By dabbagmm |

Good quality sushi and many other offerings some are fusion. Service was quite attentive and atmosphere is inviting.

Nice redo

By JulieAG |

Visited Uptown Sushi since it’s remodel and the food and sushi is just as fresh and delish as always. Crab and lobster roll is a must. Pablo egg is the husbands favorite. Sushi is always fresh. Thank goodness it’s reopened.

Nice Decor and Sushi

By Doug G |

Sushi is, dare I say it Sushi and to be honest if you go to a top quality restaurant it should always be tasty and fresh. Therefore the difference is the decor, ambiance and service when choosing a Sushi restaurant . Uptown is well located, has good service and and nice ambiance. Worth a visit.

Upscale in Uptown

By Paul M |

Very good sushi, great sake list, and a cooperative attitude. A go-to place, much more so than the much larger, noisier chain places a few blocks away on Westheimer. Good bar scene as well.

Best sashimi and espresso martini's in Houston!!!

By MKFinAdv |

Luxurious, yet contemporary restaurant with good service and excellent food. Chef inspired dishes with the best sashimi in Houston!

Cute place and good quality

Ok i like this place. Favourites: +yellow tail sashimi dishes. Though at times it may have felt fishy +rolls -- pretty tasty -- lots of protein Salmon salad is a large enough portion and i like the sake. Service is good. I like the people.

Delicious Innovative Sushi

By Steve |

This oustide of this fantastic restaurant gives little hint at how fabulous it is inside. The interior is gorgeous, and the restuarant was at capacity the night we were there. We ate at the sushi bar because we had no reservation. The sushi was fresh and the menu had many innovative single bite size pieces of sushi as well as sushi rolls. There was a full menu as well. Great people watching. Beautiful restaurant interior. Gorgeous platters of sushi heading out of the sushi bar.

A houston classic

By Why not |

The food here has always been great. Recently they close for months on months just to renovate the place. I was very surprised to find out after a long wait thay the menu has not changed almost at all.Good food. But I would like to see a change in the menu .

Is it?

Some of their cooked dishes are good but as fare as the sushi goes don't see the quality in the fish.....

Cool and chic Japanese restaurant!

By sm28185 |

If this were solely based on food, I might’ve gone with a 4 or ideally a 4.5. But the ambiance and service definitely pushed it over the top. Omar and Jasmine were awesome, especially with how often they checked in with us and in being accommodating with whatever requests we sent their way. The overall look and feel of the restaurant is pretty different from other sushi spots in town, with a nice mix of chic, elegant, and still kinda relaxing. The food itself wasn’t too shabby either. The Kobe Cubes were a pretty unique and tasty starter, as we’d never had a Japanese app based with ground beef like that before. The crunchy rice at the bottom might’ve been the best part. The Dynamite Shrimp was also solid, but the star of the night was easily the Beef Tataki. From the first bite, we could tell this was a higher quality piece of beef, that thankfully wasn’t overpowered by the sauce itself. Easily the dish I’d recommend the most. The various types of nigiri were all pretty good. From their signature selection, the Salmon and A5 definitely stood out the most and were our favorites of the group. The Black Pepper Tuna and Tiger Shrimp were our least favorite parts of the meal, but still had a ton of flavor and wouldn’t warrant a label of regret by any means. Overall, this was a great dining experience and one I would be more than happy to repeat.

Fusion Japanese

By 648tonim |

I was invited to dinner at Uptown Sushi, had heard about the place with mixed reviews, so was inquisitive to check it out myself. The reception is right by the entrance, simple affair, you almost walk straight past it. Seating is in booths or at tables. The seats in the booths are plastic and become uncomfortable quite quickly. We chose 3 starters from the fusion menu and a lemon baked fish as the main course. I frankly was not impressed with the way the food was presented ( very thinly sliced fish in a runny soy based sauce) or the taste. The main course was to be crunchy but the fish was very bland and cotton wool in texture. I far prefer Teppay. It is best not to sit in or around the bar area as that gets very noisy from about 9pm onwards, so impossible to carry on a conversation.

Good sushi, night club atmosphere, good service

By Jeff W |

Great sushi, fresh, Optimus to is very good. The atmosphere is more like a club... More formal than casual, great place for a date night. The service is good but a bit stuffy.

Well worth a visit

By nysatx |

I had eaten here before several years ago and really enjoyed it. My husband and I stopped by just for a cocktail and a sushi roll (which was delicious, by the way). Very trendy, and full of slim, beautiful people! The food here is very fresh, and they have some innovative items on the menu. Lots of techno music, so not the place for a quiet meal, but great food and great people-watching!

Mediocre overpriced sushi. Pathetic, terrible service.

By Paul V |

The sushi was edible. Basically the same quality that you will find in an HEB. Probably won't get you sick, but that's about all that can be said for it. Prices are very high. $10 for a margarita, and the sushi is around $4 a piece. The service can only be described as pathetic. I went on the evening of Saturday, January 12th and was served by "Owen". Things started badly when the host only gave one menu to me and my date. I planned to ask the waiter for another menu when he took our drink order, but 15 minutes later the waiter had not stopped by the table, so I walked to the host station and got another menu. Owen finally stopped by the table about 20 minutes after we sat down. He asked us what we wanted with no introduction or recommendations, etc. We ordered our drinks and food at the same time since by this point we were famished. Owen brought my date's drink 5 minutes later and mentioned that mine was on the way. Another 15 minutes passed, and Owen brought our food. No drink for me. No acknowledgment that he had forgotten my drink. Nothing. I walked to the bar, ordered a drink and was back at the table in 5 minutes. Gee that wasn't too hard. Maybe I should be a waiter at this place? To his credit, the bartender was great. He apologized for the waiter having forgotten my drink and even brought me another drink "on the house" about 10 minutes after I had sat back down. There were alot of attractive young girls here, so if you are a single guy looking to hook-up, this place might have some redeeming qualities for you on that front.

Average food but nice decor

By Dusten M |

The sushi was average, wasn't anything that made me say I have to come back. Average sushi prices I would say. Service was good - our guy was David and he did a great job. Not a large menu or anything super creative. I wish I had more to say but it's honestly just average sushi.

Fun place for a night out

By Cathleen Q |

I came here for sushi with a friend. The sushi was good but the decor was really fun. I wasn't thrilled by the wine offered by the glass, but that's okay we were able to go to the Tasting Room after to fix that.

Great food. Mostly great service.

By Patrick S |

First I would like to say that the food was fantastic. The miso tasted like it was made from fresh everything. The lobster shrimp rolls perfectly balanced crunch and creamy. The tata maki had a great citrus zest to the roll. The beef tataki was a little heavy on the oil, but it was still very good. The service was strangely variable. The water guys were all over it. Other staff seemed eager and interested in making sure the food was good. Our waiter was oddly detached and seemed off his game. My wife made her order, and he closed his book and appeared to turn away. I started to speak, and then he asked if there was something else. He was fairly attentive, but seemed less enthusiastic than any other staff. I guess someone has to come in last. Very excellent, just a few small things keeping the experience from being close to perfect.

Best sushi in Houston

By Rhonda S |

This is our go-to spot for exceptional sushi. The Millennium roll is my favorite, and they also have soft shell crawfish, which is hard to find sometimes. The atmosphere is very romantic ... almost club-like on weekend nights, so I wouldn't suggest taking kiddos.

Plumbing issues

By mraggie |

Food and service were both good. However, the men's bathroom was in horrifically bad shape. Part of it was out of order and the odor was significant enough to be sickening. Server tried to play if off as a landlord issue, but it really seemed more like a busted urinal was just leaking sewage. It was enough for me not to want to go back anytime soon.

A favorite amongst many

By Michelle |

Very popular and longtime favorite for Japanese cuisine. Non-sushi eaters can get a very satisfying and full meal here as well. Service is friendly and attentive.

It is an excellent Sushi Place, Try the ashimi and the Toro, there is a dessert that my wife loves!! the Mushi try it Highly recommended!!!

Excellent!

By Alilis L |

From my point of view and personal taste, I would say this is the best sushi place that I've ever been in Houston area so far. A little bit pricey and fair portions comparing with other sushi places, but perhaps it worth the extra because of excellent quality. I will come back over and over again. Loved it!!

Dress up or recieve bad seating/service

By Desespoir |

Well that pretty much sums it up. I enjoyed my food, but my partner and I had dressed business casual (as I dress up all day for work, and wanted to enjoy my evening comfortably) and the staff must have thought we were broke. We were given a bad seat, mediocre service. The guys that refill the water were the best to us. The drink we ordered from the bar took the longest to receive, but the tea is authentic and delicious. Forget about the location of the seating, and snootiness of the staff for a minute. Know this this: the seating is flat out uncomfortable and is definitely designed that way to encourage people not to stay all that long. If you have back or leg problems, you will be in pain after 30 minutes in one of their booths no matter what your posture. Everything LOOKS great, but is not really all that comfortable. The food was good, I enjoyed both my sushi and meal. The dessert (vanilla bean creme brulee) was fantastic and the perfect size for sharing. I'd go back, but only if I was in the mood to be dressed up so I could be treated like a paying customer this time.

Super

Favorite restaurant in houston!!

By Katie E |

I used to hate sushi until this place!!! The Kobe beef cubes and Salmon Nigiri is by far the best i've ever had!! I would also recommend the Beef tataki!! so so good!

Very good if you like spruced up sushi.

The décor is absolutely beautiful, the menu is interesting....a lot of specialty rolls and items not found on other menu's. The service, ehhh......

Good location, good food, ok service

By TexasBuyer |

Uptown Sushi has greatly improved from a few years ago. The food is good and fresh, but the service is slow because the sushi chefs wait until your entire order is complete before it is served on a single plate. If you are in a hurry or am very hungry, you might want to skip Uptown Sushi. On my most recent trip to Uptown Sushi, the waiter clearly had either the flu or a cold because he had a pink, runny nose. When he went back into the kitchen, we heard him squeeze twice. I can't believe that the restaurant management would allow such an non-hygienic practice of having sick waiters serve customers and spread germs. This completely ruined the dining experience for me.

Try the freshwater eel with mango cheesecake!

By pmbarrett314 |

This place is amazing! I had the mango martini to drink, which was incredibly flavorful and just how I like my drinks (on the sweet side). The 7 1/2 roll was very good, my girlfriend's Lickety Split roll was even better. The highlight of the meal was the freshwater eel signature nigiri. I ordered it on a whim because the listed garnish was mango cheesecake, and it was so good I made the rest of my friends try one as well. They all agreed that it's not something you might expect to work, but boy does it. It's also just a really beautiful restaurant: good design, lighting, not noisy at all. The waitress was friendly and attentive. I'll definitely be coming back next time I'm in town

Weekend Lunch

By anamib2014 |

Very nice ambience....went with my wife for lunch over a weekend. The panko eggs with roe and the short ribs were the highlights for me. My wife concentrated on the chef's sushi platters, and was thoroughly impressed with the same

Awesome experience!

By Brent B |

Great food, excellent service and atmosphere. The table side hot rock Kobe beef is recommended. The decor is really nice, mod and unexpected but appears to work is the contemporary backgroundnd music. It subtly fades to the back and allows conversation among the patrons.

Noisy, ok service, good food

By cwithp |

We stopped in on Wednesday and the place was rocking with noise. So high energy environment, lovely decor. Our service seemed attentive, however she never returned with anything we asked for beyond the order, like a fork, more water, another drink, etc. And she brought our check with out asking if we wanted anything further or a dessert. But she did stop by to clear our plates before we finished and we had to stop her from taking my bottle of sake before it was half empty. The food was tasty but seemed very overpriced.

ROCKIN' SUSHI

By AEBBrenham |

The real deal. Not a pretender or duplication. Great signature cocktails, the miso soup rocks. Try the Hamachi collar and unique sushi combinations. The service is friendly and efficient. Great people watching, if you know what I mean!

Good food great owner

Very good sushi restaurant located in Galleria area. Very friendly owner who makes you feel at home. Food is good and very fresh. Always busy so make sure you make a reservation. Offers valet parking.

I'm still hungry

By CompactTraveler22 |

First visit here and I am not impressed. The food and service was good, but wasn't anything special compared to other sushi restaurants. The ambiance and presentation was very nice, but the portions were probably the smallest I've ever seen...and they were very very very skimmpy with the fish even for sushi standards. I would recommend another sushi joint.
