Occidental is my favorite brewery and paired up with Urban German, it's one of my favorite places to grab food and beers with family, friends, or on a date night.

Located in what appears to be a repurposed warehouse overlooking the beautiful St. Johns Bridge, this place offers specialty beers and German dining. On the night our party dined there, there appeared to be only one server. Orders are taken from the bar. The meals are very good. I recommend anything with Spaetzel or Schnitzel.

From the outside patio you have a view of the St. John’s bridge. They have some good sausages (and grey brats!), spaetzle, beer and sauerkraut with caraway seeds. Definitely worth a try.

I came here for lunch. They have an outside patio with a view of the valley opposite the Cathedral park area. They have several German style beers on tap for $5. I tried the spicy wurst ($8) which was very good. A nice little spot with friendly service and good prices.

Have always enjoyed Occidental brewing. Love that it is in the neighborhood. They partnered with Urban German to open a restaurant across from the brewery. The food here is really tasty. They do a mean pretzel with cheese fondue. One of my go to's. Fresh pretzels with yummy cheesy goodness. We also tried the sausage, spaetzle mac & cheese and a wonderful salad. Fresh greens and a killer dressing. Low key, laid back, good beer. Prices are reasonable.

We enjoyed the outdoor atmosphere on the deck with a view of the St. John bridge. It also has a view of the Occidental Brewery parking lot (not quite as scenic as the bridge). I had the schnitzel classic served with warm potato salad and a tasty cabbage (usually not a fan of cabbage but this was very good). There was a fair selection of beers from the Occidental Brewery though not a great selection of IPAs. The only down side was you order at the bar and pay for your food before you get it. This means they expect a tip before you know what kind of service you may receive. I will say the service was OK even though you had to find your our place to sit and bus and clean your table was you were finished.

The place is actually called the Urban German Wursthaus. There is inside seating, but the day was so sunny and warm that we ate outside on the deck. Tables, umbrellas, nice views of the St Johns Bridge and the hills of Forest Park on the other side of the river. A little hard to find (not right on a street, but in sort of a courtyard off street with some parking). I had Jaegerschnitzel with spatzle and a side of potato salad and it was all good. Schnitzel was very large. Everything was tasty. But the spatzle was odd in that it was almost like spaghetti in form. The potato salad was unusual, not like most German styles. I liked what I had, but would not say it was the best German food. Clientele was mostly young singles. We had a very young baby with us, but that was no problem.
Hidden gem!
If you’re in the St Johns neighborhood of Portland you absolutely must have a meal at the Urban German Wursthaus! Tucked away on the edge of Cathedral Park, Urban German has options for everyone: drinks range from German beers on tap, bottled cider (both local and imported) and wine all can pair easily with a selection of traditional German eats AND they have a whole vegan menu as well! The Bavarian pretzel with cheese fondue sauce is a must to get any meal started or to just paid with drinks. To add to the excellent food and drink selections the dog friendly patio has a view of the beautiful St Johns bridge. Lastly, the cherry on top of this glorious establishment is the top notch staff. The team is kind, knowledgeable about German beer and foods and overall wonderful. Please if you are in the area, do yourself a favor and visit the Wursthaus, you will not regret it!!!
