Takes me back to my grandfather's kitchen

By DBFX |

My grandfather was Polish, but the cooking at Uzbekistan takes me back to his kitchen. The sauces and noodles have that depth of flavor that is not found in many American restaurants. The noodles are fresh, wonderfully chewy, and homemade. The meat dumplings are huge with a light texture. Don't pass up the bread--it is hot, fresh from the oven, and addictive. I love the chicken heart kabobs (they are served with a tangy dipping sauce). Don't forget to order a pitcher of compot (fruit drink). Their version is light and refreshing and just sweet enough. If I did not live an hour away, I would be eating at Uzbekistan weekly!

Wow!

First time here and what a pleasant surprise. We had a number of the salads so we could share and they were amazing. Exceptional flavors to be sure. The prices were really reasonable as well. We came on a Monday night and I think it would be reservation only if you came on or near a weekend. Make a reservation!! Staff was pleasant a well.

Have to give a try

First Time & Very Pleased!

We were a group of 6. I am not familiar with this type of cuisine but we were with Russian friends who took care of the ordering. Without them I would have been lost, although I am sure the servers are good help to those who need it. We ordered a large spread, so I was able to try a good variety of items. We had the Pilov (rice dish), kabobs (fish, lamb, beef, chicken), Somsa (pastry filled with beef), bread, fried potatoes, greek salad, Russian potato salad, and a fruit juice with boiled cherries and apples. For dessert, we tried apple pie with vanilla ice cream (amazing) and honey cake, which tasted more like a cookie but was still very good. I enjoyed it all and would definitely recommend everything. The service was great as well. We really couldn't make out the bill as it is handwritten and confusing so I could see why some people could be easily overcharged, but our bill was so inexpensive we just paid it and left a nice tip. It's BYOB, but it looked like they had a bar as well. Definitely worth a try, I'm sure you wont be disappointed.

Tried to order a big party. Big disappointment

By Alex F |

Tried to order a big party. Owner acts like he owns you. Prices in the menu apparently wrong and we need to add “approximately 20%”. Considering this place was shut down for 23 violations this year- it is a very strange approach. Many people stop going there and they feel it. Ended up going to New Georgian restaurant with new outside sitting down the street and what a difference. Shame on you Uzbekistan restaurant.

Nice

After reading good reviews we decided to try this place for authentic Uzbek and Eastern European specialties. The bread was fresh and warm. We ordered chicken soup with meatballs. The soup was a good choice and good quantity. For the main course we tried samsa and sheesh kabobs for which this place is famous for. We had good food in a very homely family style restaurant. Even on Sunday night it was quite packed. The only downside was very slow service and the server was not attentive. We had to wait for every small things to arrive. Overall good food for good price .

SO MUCH GOOD FOOD

By Connie M |

We came here for a late lunch after food shopping at Net Cost- which is an Eastern European food store. We sat outside on the patio which was covered in grape vines and there was a lovely breeze so even though it was in the 90's it was comfortable. We ordered 3 kinds of dumplings, a spinach feta pancake and a slice of tandoori bread. All were very good. The tandoori and the chicken dumplings were particularly excellent. We were so stuffed we had no room for dessert and even skipped our dinner that night. We are already planning a return trip with the family when it's a little cooler to try some of the heavier foods- the soups looked and smelled delicious.

Great little gem in the NE Philadelphia

By Absinthe H |

I love this place, I go here every chance I get. The food they serve is very much like the one I used to eat back in my home country. The prices are affordable, there is a nice selection of dishes, salads, and beverages.

great food and great selection!

By Antonio P |

We had some of the "ravioli", chicken kebab and a few other things. The chicken was perfect, with a unique balance of flavors. Great tandoor bread. Broad selection of dishes. Highly recommended place.

Excellent food and GREAT value

By Paul S |

I really enjoy dining at this restaurant in Northeast Philadelphia. Customers get a great deal of value for their money, and service is attentive. It’s a great place for children, and for group dinners, and the atmosphere is casual and it’s a bit loud. For my visit on March 25, I was with a large group so we tried a wide variety of dishes and shared them around the table. For salads, my personal favorites were the Carrot Korean Style, the Olivie Salad, the Pickled Mushrooms, and the Eggplant. All were excellent. The bread, served warm, was excellent and we had several orders. For main courses, I tried the Pilov Samarkand, the Beef Stroganoff, the Stuffed Cabbage, and the Herring and enjoyed them all. The Shish Kebob dishes may be the house speciality, and adults should consider ordering two as portions are not that large. I found the lamb rib kebob to be a bit too fatty, but the regular lamb kebob was outstanding. The restaurant is a BYOB, and we found that the dishes went well with Rhone-style wines, Belgian beers, and of course, Vodka. This place is well worth a visit.

Surprisingly great!

By TPM17 |

The food is fantastic, but the service is really lacking. The staff is so overwhelmed they can't get to all your requests in a timely fashion which is a shame because it's deserving of 5 stars. Free parking in the back and it's BYOB! Very very inexpensive great time at this place!

Enjoyed

By Murfthecat |

Really good and affordable place. Wait stuff were good, food was excellent with a good portion size. It is BYOB. Will go again.

Love the food, very special and delicious

By HotelPhd |

Authentically delicious, good variety and pleasant surroundings. Plenty for a vegetarian or pescatarian to eat. Definitely save room for the dessert. Reasonably priced and friendly service.

Excelent variety of food

By sararefaeli |

We just came back from a pleasant evening at the restaurant. The food is excellent, many varieties of russian food. The place is very good for families and couples. They just opened the terrace and the outside seating in nice.

Eat to hearts content

By chuckees1 |

Not your normal restaurant, very earthy byob, family stye restaurant, Russian/Uzbec dialect is spoken all the time, great people great service, fantastic food reminds me of my Mom's cooking. Menu highlights, the green borsch and regular borsch, grilled meats/poultry on skewir, veal liver, and fish skewirs. I know not many people like liver but its great. Can't forget the pigs in the blanket and meat filled dumplings, also they did have some vegetarerian options.

Another terrible experience.

By Alex F |

If you’re in love with places that serve food and mice are running between your legs - this is your place. The food is very mediocre and the owner cought a mouse in front of everyone after a couple ladies were screaming. This place used to be good but now I think it’s on the verge of closing.

Excellent!

By Ella P |

I lovee this place, the hot bread, salads, borsht, the kabobs, the compote, the potatoes. Followed by delectable desserts accompanied by their signature black tea. Everything here is absolutely amazing. Byob, I really enjoy dining el fresco on their front patio with my friends and family.

Another authentic restaurant near pilly

By jrw0808 |

All the food is excellent. I would recommend everyone to go eat here. They have something for everyone. I go there often and the food is consistently great. Kabobs, salads, dumplings, stuffed cabbage just to name a few. A must try!!!

Fantastic kabobs and plov, consistent great food and good service

By Bbear332 |

We stumbled upon this place by pure luck and now go all the time, even had my husband's birthday party there. The meat kabobs are delicious, so is the traditional rice with lamb - plov, potatoes dishes, stuffed cabbage, salads, never had room for desserts but will try one day. Great for families, we always go with kids, or for couples and friends. BYOB. Prices very affordable. Atmosphere is fun and eclectic. For an expat like myself, I love watching the old music shows on tv and the people who seem like they have never left the homeland :)

Much better than I knew!

By sonjasolley |

I had my first experience there this past winter with friends. What a great experience! lots of fun, laughs and fantastic food. highly flavored and the meat kabobs were to DIE for. so delish! The soup I would pass on again, it was VERY oily. The bread..oh WOW! so good! Lots of wonderful tries on this menu! The only complaint: we were in the front room and it was VERY drafty, our feet were freezing! some heat units there would have been great!

Excellent

By Serge M |

Been eating at uzebekistan for some time now. Awesome food and great atmosphere. Great for take out as well. Service always quick. Sometimes (especially weekends) the place could be pretty crowded, but they have been expanding. Chicken kabob is my favorite, but pretty much everything from the menu is delicious. Food always fresh and the portions will leave you stuffed. Can't beat their prices also. Most items on the menu are under $10. Also it is BYOB.

Enjoy life

By Natka23 |

We have been at Uzbekistan many times, food is excellent, service quick and pleasant. Owner or manager always on the floor talking to guests. Every time we've been there there is always some kind celebration, looks people love this place. Try!!!!!! Enjoy!!!!!!!

An amazing place

By Janet1962_1 |

Excellent food, great service.. Amazing staff Left our dinner , drove all the way home and realized that I left my purse. Called them after midnight. Half of the staff stayed and waited for me to drive back to pick up my item'' No one got upset or annoyed.. I was shocked since nothing was missing from my purse and that they were so kind..

We Love Uzbek!

By Peter J |

This is one of our favorite restaurants for a casual meal with cuisine that is a bit off the beaten path. Lotsa food for little money. BYOB. Ask for help in ordering if you don't recognize the items on the menu, which even after being there half a dozen times, applies to me. In any event,t he kebobs are great, and the salads are wonderful. Try a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

Wow!

By Heidi D |

This restaurant was a wonderful surprise. You could drive by it many times without noticing. If you did you would be missing a place with wonderful old world atmosphere and delicious Eastern European food. While we did not live everything we tried (the polmeni were quite tough) many of the dishes were excellent including the Monty dumplings and the lamb kebabs (standouts). Prices were reasonable and the pace leisurely. It's nice to order a number of dishes to taste and share. We will return for sure. Reservations needed in weekends.

Quality, value and old world experience

By Stormcloud319 |

Don't hesitate to try it. You'll go back guaranteed. My cousin and I went for lunch, brought home a take out dinner of rice, lamb kabob and "apple pie" desert for my son and he said he would eat there every day. The next weekend he took his 2 friends and they said the same thing. The varenki (pierogies) are meant to be shared at 15 per order for under $7.00. The lamb was tender and flavorful and a bargain at $5.00 a skewer. Many things are ala carte and urge you to share and try many of the offerings. I can't wait to take all 3 of my sons, their wives my husband and and grand kids for my birthday this month! So glad we found this place!

Authentic Uzbek delicacies in a castle-like decor

By Christopher M |

This is the place for authentic Uzbek and Eastern European specialties. A favorite of local Russian and Eastern European immigrants, English is definitely a second language here, from the waitstaff to your fellow diners to the music videos in the dining room. Enjoy homemade, cooked-to-order kebobs of all kinds, a variety of soups, dumplings and seafood. The tandori bread alone is worth a visit. In addition to a dining room reminiscent of a Carpathian castle, there is covered outdoor dining available. The atmosphere is friendly and casual.

Dinner with parents

By LydiaK313 |

With immigrant parents and being of eastern European heritage, we compare all dishes to Baba's cooking. The food was delicious, fresh and traditional. Thumbs up on beef stroganoff. My husband are Moscow style fish which was very tasty. Baklava was amazing. And above all, the prices were beyond reasonable. Definitely going back. Note: byob

Good food and good prices

By Tammy W |

Some reviews had us cautious of the service, but we had a friendly waitress. Not very outgoing but nice. We opted to sit outside, since the inside is small and a little dingy. The outside area was pretty nice. We started with the Tandoori bread. Take it. It’s a round rye bread, which is very good. The Vareniki with Potatoes (Perogies) were very good. Warm sour cream is served in a gravy boat (I prefer cold). Samsa Tandori with meat and the Manti have the same meat filling. I’m not a big fan of this filling (to much ground meat). But it was nicely prepared. Eat the Samsa with its bread crust and a little of the hot red sauce. Lamb kabobs: very good. Side of rice also good. Stuffed Cabbage: Filling is 60/40 rice to meat. But it was very good. For all of the above and 2 sodas, we paid $52. Well worth it. I will definitely go back again.

Lunch with family

By Vasilis Chatzigiannis |

I’ve been in this restaurant at least 6 times from late 2016 to today and always in the company of my Georgian/Russian friend. The food was always good and the service great. But, the last two times it has been a little bit of let down. The potions have become smaller and service a bit tardy. It took them time to serve us and pick out plates. Also, the new stroganoff recipe is ok but not like the old one.

Fun time

By Michael M |

Great for group (4-8)of family or friends to have a taste of Russian/Eastern European food. Food was delicious. Staff was helpful and courteous. Noisy, so come for conversation and laughter. BYOB. Prices are very reasonable. Casual dining.

Explore and enjoy!!!

By Elena S |

If you visit Uzbekistan once, you will be back again and again. Pleasant atmosphere, friendly and welcoming wait staff, but most important unusual, but delicious food. Rice-Pilaf is my favorite, made with spices and flavors to die for, chicken shish-kebab is on top of my list as well as broad variety of salads and hearty, healthy choices of soups. Ask about special fruit punch (kompot) and enjoy!!!!

Great food! Awesome owner

By Nikki M |

My husband and I just stopped here to grab some take out with two of our sons. The food was amazing. We had a few different samplings and loved everything. While we were waiting, we were fortunate to meet the owner. What a great guy! When he saw what we ordered, he asked us to wait and went in and made us fresh bread to take with us. Can't wait to go back with friends and family. Its worth the hour drive for us. And thanks to the neighbor Dominic for teaching us about the grapes

Welcome Home

By Chillaxin71 |

I recently went over to Russia to visit family and they served us traditional meals. Since then I have wanted to find a place that offers the same type of food. I believe we found the right place. We stopped here for lunch... We ordered the Manti, Borscht Soup, Beer Stroganoff, and a side of bread. Everything came out promply, hot and delicious. The prices were very reasonable to say the least. The service was adequate but at times disappeared. It was difficult to ask for refills but overall they were pleasant. We are already looking at our calendar to see when we can head back.

Awesome!!

By GlamazonMermaid |

The owner is fun and caring! Definitely makes you feel like family when you're here. Definitely worth the stop if you happen to be in the area!

Better than ever!

By jan_klincewicz |

I just realized it's been six years since I'd left a review of this place. I'm happy to say that having eaten there today, it's only gotten better. Years ago, service was a crap shoot between Soviet-style indifference and polite tolerance. Today, both servers were welcoming and sincerely cheerful. We used to tolerate the indifferent wait staff because the food was pretty good. Happy to report both have improved so much. We always order our favorites, maybe adding a new dish each time to broaden our horizons. The must-have tandoori bread is simple, but fresh and addictive. The samsa (meat pie) and manti (meat dumplings) were better than ever. The kabobs (we had skirt steak, lamb ribs and chicken) are subtly seasoned charcoal grilled miracles. The chicken breasts were impossibly juicy, more like thigh meat and could be the centerpiece of a meal on their own. But the star for us is the Moscow fish ...a perfectly filleted sea bass encased in a cheese sauce with mushrooms, tomatoes and crispy/creamy roasted potatoes. Rich beyond belief. I wish I'd brought a nice bottle of vodka to go with the fruit compote (cherries and apple nectar with whole fruit) but refreshing on it's own. A sign upon entering warns of a fair 15% surcharge for the whole bill until such time as inflation allows them to rescind it. Makes more sense than re-printing the menu, as I don't think prices have increased in the past 10 years. Can't wait to return.

A Great Place for "Dr. Zhivago"

By Tetor22 |

Uzbekistan Restaurant is located in the most northern tip of Philadelphia, in the Somerton neighborhood, and can be easily reached by public transit. Perogies, stuffed cabbage, homemade ethnic breads, chicken soup.....dishes to warm the heart and soul; along with their extensive menu of excellent selections to remind one of the lands of Eastern Europe. For couples, small or large parties, Uzbekistan will not disappoint. Dining can be inside or on their outdoor patio. Service can be a bit slow - but, this can be expected when someone in the kitchen is carefully preparing a wonderful masterpiece. I highly recommend their house berry punch - something you will experience only at Uzbekistan. Parking is free and ample in their lot behind the restaurant. Prices are reasonable and affordable. This is a spotlessly clean place.

Quite an Experience

By amoebat |

Six of us arrived with our wine and were seated immediately at the only table left, Many other groups were much larger: 10,12,18. People celebrating births, weddings and birthdays. The waiter helped us with the menu and we ate and ate and ate. It seems like the food keeps coming. Each dish a different taste and move delicious than the previous. We had soup, salad, shish kabob, chicken, potatoes, vegetables, most of which I couldn't identify with out a translator. They are marked on the menu in both languages. Take a chance and go. You will be quite pleased. Shared a few desserts each big enough for 6! The bill including tip was less than $25 a person. Unbelievable.

Pleasantly surprised

By Tim E |

Our friends were taking us out to a Turkish resturant, but it was closed for renovations, and the owner sent us to Ubekistan. We were naturally leery and showed up to find a large Saturday crowd without reservations. To our delight the manager seated us at a great table in about 20 minutes, and we enjoyed great tasting, authentic Russian food with generous portions at a modest price. We were only patrons speaking English, and we felt like we had left Philly and stepped into Eastern Europe for the evening. I would highly reccomend this resturant but be certain to make reservations and ask for indoor seating.

Very Good

By jrw0808 |

I have come to this place 3 or 4 times. It only seems to get better each time. I love the salads, soups, stuffed cabbage and kabobs. In fact I have liked everything I've tried. The lamb rib, Luda and chicken heart kabobs are the best. I just went yesterday and can't wait to go back again.

Authentic cuisine - delish!

By WeTravel4850 |

Being somewhat unfamiliar with the menu items proved a little challenging when ordering but the food was very good and recognizable once brought to the table. Mushroom barley soup was very flavorful - the greek salad was enough for 2 people. One entree the Georgian stew was very good with a tomato based sauce and lost of herbs in the sauce. For dessert we opted for the cheese filled dumplings with fruit sauce ... which resulted in a bowl full and enough to be brought home and eaten for several days! Don't be discouraged by the slight language barrier you might find with the staff, all are friendly, extremely accommodating. Over all, this place is worth the trip!

World treat!

Had the most wonderful dinung experience with two othef couples. Sharing such tasty things such as as dumplings, borscht, bread, kabobs, mushroon soup. Looking forward to mext visit

Quite The Place

By ROBERT I |

I joined a friend for lunch and stepped into a special cultural experience. While lunch is quiet, I hear that dinner time and weekends this place is packed. Very good food--we tried a few lamb dishes plus beef and more. Great service, with care, concern and a smile--giving us advice on our choices. Festive and comfortable environment and ambiance. Reasonable prices plus a BYOB policy that is appreciated. There were tables in an outside covered garden which we did not choose due to some street noise. Stop by and enjoy this place with family or friends.

Middle eastern comfortable

By Nika N |

Located off the main rd, parking is available behind the restaurant, lavatories were clean, food is tasty and is not going to break your budget. Its not worth traveling far to dine, but if u r in the area do try it our : ) outside seating is much better, pleasant. Not much ambiance indoors.

Delicious food; disappointing service

By crowleyinpa |

The food was excellent. Authentic and well prepared with delicious spices and fillings. I wish that the waiter we had this day was more engaged in his work. It wasn't so busy that he could not come back to check on us, even one time, which he did not. And he forgot a salad that we ordered. I have been here before, and the food and service were both wonderful. I hope today was just an off day. I would normally rate this as average, but really, the food is so good, it's not fair to do that.

Nice place for eating.

By Alma410 |

We celebrated friends Birthday. It was a lot of food. All food was delicious. We like manty, samsa, cheburekis and shashliks. Staff was friendly and helpful. We had good time!

Always good

By andrmat |

Don't know how many times I've been there, but it is always as good as the first time. Unique mixed cuisine, great service and very inexpensive prices. Highly recommend for business lunch as well as a family dinner.

Food was amazing, but service was terrible!

By AR_Delaware |

My husband and I are from Delaware, and we drive to the Net Cost grocery store once every couple of months. We always stop by Uzbekistan Restaurant, because their food is amazing and prices are pretty low. But last time we went, we were very dissapointed with the service, and we don't think we will ever be back. It was a TUESDAY afternoon, around 4 pm, there were just 2 other tables besides ours. Food was great as always, but we didn't get any kind of sauce for Samsa, or Shish-kebab. No big deal. There were 3 servers there, but they were all sitting around at the little bar area next to the restrooms. I kept looking around and waving to them, and then I had to actually get up, walk all the way up to the server and ask for sause. The meal was great, and we were ready to go, because we had a 2.5 hour drive ahead of us. It took us probably about 20 minutes to make our server notice us (she was too busy sitting around with other servers) just to get our check, and 10 more minutes to actually leave after we paid, because they were taking forever to bring the credit card back. Horrible experience, should have ordered everything to go.

Great Authentic Russian Restaurant Experience

By GoGlobalMan |

Looking for a REAL Russian restaurant in Philly? Stop looking. Uzbekistan in NE Philly is the real deal! Crowded with Russians and other neighboring countries folks on giant family tables having a great time while out of this world portions of kebabs are being served. Great food at unbelievable prices. You will have to bring your own wine or vodka, because they don't have a license, but who cares:-) The owner is a real gentleman who even works the over crowded parking lot and presented us with a free rack of lamb (as tender as you can imagine) because the kebabs were late. If you like authentic Russian food and atmosphere, this is the place!

Very pleased

By Жанна Я |

Delicious! Great service! Thanks a lot! Prosperity to you! Cozy atmosphere! Affordable prices

Ridiculously inexpensive "small" dishes big enough to share

By jan_klincewicz |

My wife and I went here for lunch on a Sunday. I'd heard about it for a long time, and decided it would be my Father's Day treat. I'd perused the menu online before we set out, so I had a pretty good idea of what I was going to order. There was apparently an event being held inside, but it was a nice day, so we were fine with the spacious outdoor dining area. We waited a bit for our menus and water. The waitstaff (all 20-something blonde Russian girls) were relatively efficient, but had all the charm of Soviet-era bureaucrats. Our initial server spoke decent English. She informed us that they were out of potato verenekas (pierogis) and Manti (meat dumplings) but there was plenty of other stuff on the menu to make up for that. We of course, began with the signature tandoor bread (don't confuse this with Naan - the $2 hunk was enough for four. Hot and fresh. My wife ordered Achick-Chuck (tomatoes & onion) in a very unique dressing. I ordered the Ukranian Borsch - Nothing like the Borscht I had imagined... very brothy, with nice hunks of meat and veggies - served with a dollop of sour cream. For our dumpling course, we ordered chicken ravioli (little homemade pillows of tender dough swimming in butter and more sour cream.) Quite good, but there were better things to come. The Samsa Tandori (baked round pancake with meat for $2.50 was served with a savory tomato sauce, and by this time would have been a fine meal shared with my wife. However - The kabobs were yet to come. I ordered skirt steak, and lula (minced lamb and beef with onions and spices) as well as the lamb rib (priced ridiculously under $4 as was the skirt steak.) ALL the kabobs (including the tenderest lamb we had ever eaten) were under $4.50 each. After finishing the kabobs, we were STUFFED (and took home half the tandoor bread.) During our meal, and obtaining the check, we had at least three servers, several of whom spoke to us curtly in Russian (blissfully unaware that we did not understand a word.) The Manager did check with us to see that someone was bringing our check (seemingly hoping that he might find a reason to berate a server.) He did not seem interested in our compliments about the food. We will absolutely go back, and try other things. The bill came to about $46 before tip. As the food ranged from "very good" to "extraordinary" I cannot think of a better way to spend money dining when very hungry. All the food tasted like it was made by wrinkled old ladies wearing babushkas, blending cumin, dill, parsley, garlic etc. without the need to measure. Hearty Central Asian / Easter European peasant fare. Again, the service wasn't BAD, but if you expect a "Hello, my name is Olga, and I'll be your server today.. can I tell you about our specials?" kind of place, this is not it. You just need to adjust your attitude that they are here to take your order and bring your food. The menu is HUGE and covers a variety of regions. Small plates make it great for sharing and trying as many as possible. Don't miss the kabobs, though... they are also large enough for sharing.

Voyage to an exotic land without ever actually leaving Philadelphia

By Adam C |

This is definitely an exotic experience. The food was excellent. I had the Kharcho, a spicy soup with rice & lamb. I also had the Tandoori bread. I also had the Chahohbili, a Georgian (as in the central European/Asian country, not the state in USA) style chicken stew. My friend had the Beef Skirt Steak & Chicken Shish Kabob. We both shared a side of rice Pilaf. I also drank the Russian soda that was flavored with Tarragon. For dessert, I had the Baklava. Everything was excellent. The service could have been a little better, but was still good.

Great atmosphere and food

By sattelite10 |

My brother and sister in law brought me here since I had never tasted authentic Ukrainian food before. The atmosphere was charming, there is a nice garden area for outdoor seating in the back and patio seating out front as well as comfortable space inside . The menu is extensive . We all tasted and enjoyed the Ukrainian Borscht, and the meat filled pastry cake . I had tasty lamb kebab with a delightful tomato herb dipping sauce . The lamb shank and fried potatoes and beef stroganoff were both superb. Our waitress suggested Russian Cherry Juice when we realized wine was not served, and we all enjoyed this a lot! I totally enjoyed this charming place!

Unusual, authentic, delicious

By lilmac2012 |

This restaurant is so good, we took a detour on the recent trip to NY just to eat lunch there. It's Russian food with quite a few Central Asian dishes on the menu. Most are inexpensive and all the ones we tried were delicious. There is a nice selection of hearty soups, kabobs and dumplings. The portions are generous, so I suggest doing it family-style - ordering several dished and sharing. Do try their cherry dumplings. The restaurant is definitely unusual - seating is in cosy rooms and alcoves, so even when it's busy, you never feel crowded. If it's warm outside, I recommend outdoor seating in one of the little summer gazebos that are quite private with reed walls. Even though the restaurant is on a busy road, the outdoor seating feels like a relaxing private garden. By the way, there is plenty of parking in the back, surrounded by rose bushes and grape vines.

"Taste of home "

By tatarin5 |

Do you remember taste of your mother cooking? Who lived in Uzbekistan (country) know's that food in this restaurant taste like home made food. We have been in "Uzbekistan" many times. It doesn't matter if there is a partly of two or family gathering everybody always welcomed with a great service. Stop by, you will LOVE it!

Authentic to the Core

By psjsong |

Amazing food! Starts off with home made bread and generic packaged butter to go with it! The Ukrainian Borsch was spectacular. The sour cream you get is real nice and creamy and not like something you get that's packaged. We also had the Mantu (Lamb with Onion Dumplings), which were great but be careful if you don't like gamey meat. Plov dish with lamb also had plenty taste and wasn't greasy. Also the kebabs are pretty good and not to overly priced. If you want a feel for Uzbekistan this is the place. BYOB!!!!!

Delightful!

By Karen J |

Food is very fresh - lots of vegetables. The meat skewers are fantastic. Servers are very helpful. Ummm, bread!

Excellent food - but overcharged!

By andrew l |

What an unusual restaurant; an exciting and exotic ambiance, great food, decent service - and then we're overcharged by approx $ 18 on a lunch for 2 people. Today's meal was a social occasion, so I didn't want to get into an argument with the server, but the amount of the bill (written in cyrillic, which I don't understand) bothered me - so I looked at their menue on the web afterwards. I was correct about being overcharged; she billed me $ 44 instead of approx $ 26.00. I'll be calling the owner tomorrow to get it resolved. I'd like to upgrade my review; it's up to him.

Service was very slow, food was hit and miss

By familyofthreeinpa |

The food was hit and miss, some items very good, other not so much. The barbecue is what's popular, the grilled lamb was excellent, Manti and Kutab both excellent. Lagman Kavurma overcooked, pass on this one. Four of us ate for just under $100. BYOB We were seated right away however waited for 25 minutes before being acknowledged by the waitress. When I complained, she did not apologize. Rude. The entrees did not come out together, one appetizer served with entrees, another entree was not submitted by waitress. Service was a very poor experience. We traveled one hour 30 minutes to eat here, will not return owning to poor service.

Delicious

This is a cozy little restaurant with delicious food. The driveway is a bit hard to turn into because it's a bit tucked away. The servers speak Russian and broken English. The menu has Russian and English writing. Now for the food, it is surprisingly yummy ethnic food. I always get the "plov" and a delicious and soft chicken shish kebob. There are a lot of choice for a small price. Great place, I recommend it.

Delicious, authentic food and homey atmosphere!

We celebrated Womens' Day at Uzbekistan (a group of 18 women) and enjoyed every minute of it. Timely service and excellent food combined with a very home-like atmosphere made it memorable! The restaurant was packed but all orders came in in a timely fashion without any delays!. The fish shish-kebob, chicken hearts and lamb kebobs are to die for and the famous honey cake completed our meal! Highly recommend for any occasion!

Different and Delicious

By Zekebp |

An outstanding place with a long list of unique offerings, Uzbekistan makes no attempt to cater to the local palette. In fact, some of the waiting staff does not even speak English; only Russian. Beyond its authenticity, the food here is notable for how good it is. In two visits so far, our favorites include the pilaf (with a long list of spices), the mammoth chicken dumplings, Lagman Kavurma (noodles with meat and vegetables), the stuffed cabbage, the Lula Kebab, and the sweet cheese Vareniki. And, all washed down with cherry compot. Be sure to make reservations. If the weather is warm, sit on the outdoor patio. Surrounded by grapevines, you can almost imagine you are out in the country (probably, another country) and not on the Bustleton Pike. It is also remarkably affordable. Note, that this is a BYO (and most patrons do so).

Authentic Russian Cuisine

By BelleCheri |

My friend and I went last minute to Uzbekistan's last night, not for Uzbek, but for Russian food. We were fortunate to get a table out in the heated tent on the patio because the restaurant was packed and LOUD! I think we were the only nonRussians there, actually, which indicates to me that if you want real Russian fare, this is the place to be. It is a BYOB, and it looked like everybody had. My friend said that it is possible to order ahead , and have the meal on the table when you arrive. The food was incredibly flavorful. We shared a Chilean Sea Bass Kabob, Mushroom Soup, Korean Carrot salad, and Beef Dumplings, accompanied by a steaming hot loaf of crusty bread, and had leftovers to take home. A few caveats: Although the food is wonderful, the surroundings are less than stellar. If you anticipate being seated in the tent, be aware that the heat is variable to chilly. The tables and chairs are plastic, so probably not the best place for a romantic dinner. Or klutzy people prone to standing up quickly. :~] Apparently they have a corrupt system of charging their customers service fees, and higher prices than are on the menu. So be aware of that, and check your receipt carefully before you pay.

Fantastic Russian Restaurant

By Patti M |

When I first entered this restaurant I knew it was going to be good. I was in a party of 5 and we all had different choices. I started with the salad, Molodejniy, mix spring, tomatoes, garlic dressing and feta. it was really tasty. I followed this with Chahohbili, georgian style chicken stew. It was good but there were quite a few bones in the chicken that was cooked with many spices and tomatoes and other vegetables. I also had the beef kabobs with the rice pilaf. The kabobs were delicious and so was the rice that was mixed with many different spices and vegetables. They also served a Russian bread that was similar to pita bread but a lot chewier. The people did speak Russian but our waiter spoke both and he was extremely helpful in helping me to decide what to have. Their menu has many dishes they only state with meat. Most of the time that was lamb. I am not a lamb lover but there were a few other dishes without the lamb. We did not have reservations and it was a Friday night. Big mistake! But we pleasantly enjoyed eating on the terrace outside that had heaters installed. it was a very enjoyable meal and I will certainly return again!

Great Sunday Afternoon Lunch

By Darin |

A friend and I decided to try some different ethnic cuisine for lunch one Sunday in June. After reviewing the different options, we both decided on trying out this place: Uzbekistan. Heralded as Russian cuisine, we were very pleased with our choice. We arrived to the restaurant in the early afternoon (about 1:30 PM). Since it was a beautiful day, we decided to sit outside in the covered patio. The service was decent, the food was incredible, and the prices were fair. I had the borsch -- which has always been my favorite soup -- and some chicken kabobs. Everything was delicious, well-prepared, and filling. If I am over in this neighborhood again, I will definitely stop by this place.

Garlic deliciousness!

By Nan D |

Uzbek food is a wonderful combination of Central Asian, Russian and even Korean cuisine. The menu is large. Not too much for vegetarians, except for the salads. Standouts include the Korean carrot salad, the eggplant salad (with walnuts, cilantro and pomegranate) and the very tender chicken skewers. In the summer, there is a nice outdoor patio, shaded from the busy Bustleton Avenue by a wall of vines. Bring your own vodka. This restaurant is in the far Northeast part of Philadelphia, which is a bit of a trek from center city. Worth it, though.

Great food

Very cute little place with terrific food. We met friends there and we weren’t sure we were in the right place. There’s not much signage on Bustleton Pike. Their entrance is on the side and plenty of parking can be found in the back. The inside is adorable. It reminds me of those little trattorias from 1960’s spy films where the spy would meet their contact (think The Ipcress File). They also have a patio which is now covered for winter and furnished with heat lamps. Service is good but lacking in personality. No one is chipper. However, having a server that’s a ray of sunshine does not guarantee you a great meal. We started with their fresh baked chewy bread and butter and the Cheburek, a delicious flaky turnover filled with beef and onions. The kebabs are tender and priced fairly between $4 and $5. Beef and lamb were seasoned well and cooked perfectly. We also had the Lula kebab which is minced beef and lamb re-shaped and cooked on a skewer. The fried potatoes in garlic are addictive and the baby lamb chops were very tender, even though they were well done. We topped it off with their Baklava and Napoleons. Flaky, sweet, heaven. The restaurant has all Uzbek customers so we definitely felt out of place. It was a great experience and we loved the food, we just wish there was more diversity with patrons.

Amazing Restaurant!

By elepal |

Uzbekistan Restaurant is as good as it gets! The food is incredible - there is nothing on the menu we've tried that wasn't wonderful. It's so hard to pick favorites but we never eat there without ordering their lamb shank. I don't usually like lamb, but this dish has changed my mind! (And I could eat the fried potato side 'till I burst!) The prices are so reasonable - eg: Our favorite appetizers to share are Cheburek (a pocket filled with fried potatoes, meat, onions, and cilantro, served with homemade tomato sauce) and Kutab (a pancake with spinach & feta cheese) and they are only 2.99 each! (You definitely want to share everything because you need to try all the wonderful and varied flavors, so bring several friends along.) Be sure to try the red and/or green borscht (soup), which is delightfully different from the traditional beet soup that you may be used to. Don't forget to sop up the dregs with their fresh out-of-the-oven bread. Hint: You may want to split a bowl to leave room for what's to follow. On a recent visit, the congenial owner realized that we had never tried some of his favorites, so he brought us a generous sampling of Chahohbili, his Georgian style chicken stew. Can't begin to tell you how great that was. The chef has an amazing talent for spices! The only real problem we have is that our stomach capacities are limited, so saving room for the delicious made-on-the-premises deserts is a challenge. Our favorite spots to sit are the "balconies", the intimate enclosed porches, but the outdoor patio is where the enthusiastic locals enjoy the food and the BYOB's. There is plenty of parking in the rear of the restaurant, but be extra-careful leaving the driveway if you plan to make a left turn!

A taste of Russia on NE Philly

By judedude79 |

When dining with three 20-somethings, 1 born in Russia and the other 2 studied in Moscow and speak fluent Russian, it's a no-brainer to go to one of the numerous Russian restaurants nearby. This is our go-to however. Dining al fresco on carrot salad, manti, lamb skewers and stuffed cabbage and listening to the chatter in Russian and the clink of vodka bottles on a lovely summer- like eve with 3 happy kids.....what could be better.

Nice interior/exterior but bad food!

By Khadija T |

Were looking for someplace different for dinner and ended up here. The exterior and interior of the place is inviting and comfy, but we were not happy with the food. The starter bread was not cooked through, it was doughy in the middle. The greek salad was ok, but the cheese on it is too much, they shred cheese on it until you can't see what's under it and the dried meat it comes with did not taste good. We took the lamb chops entree and grilled half chicken, it comes with potatoes which are super oily you can actually taste the oil. Both the chicken and lamb chops had no taste and were not cooked well, it had the smell of raw meat. Maybe I am just used to mediterranean, european, middle eastern, and latin cuisine or maybe the food is just not seasoned/ cooked to how it's supposed to be, either way we did not like the food in this place specifically.

Good , interesting visit

By Kyle F |

My partner, my friend, her boyfriend, and I ventured out to this restaurant from NJ today. We were excited to try something new, though I was a little nervous because I'm relatively picky. We pulled up to a very lively, interesting looking restaurant. It had a uniquely beautiful sign. The parking is situated behind the restaurant. There is a black door that leads inside to a heavy wooden door (after you walk up a path next to outdoor seating). Once you open that door, there's a beautiful Uzbekistan painting. You can see it in the pictures I've uploaded below. The restaurant is absolutely beautiful inside. The staff is very nice and friendly. They're patient, since no one at our table had/has any familiarity with the Russian language. They were very courteous and I was impressed with how attentive they were. We didn't have long waits - though everything was so fresh - made quickly, the food was all delicious, and the servers cleaned up quickly. They were very efficient. I definitely love the Tandoori Bread and a table favorite was the Cheborek. We weren't too crazy about the pan seared spring chicken, because it was a weird piece of chicken and had a lot of garlic on it - but it was still good. Affordable prices!

Don't Miss This Opportunity

By mrsselanne |

Beautiful place. The food is like homecooked meals with fresh everything. Nothing tastes or looks like its precooked and reheated. Always a good crowd in here. They are welcoming to americans here just as they are to people from abroad, more so than similar restaurants in the area are. Don't feel you need to be Uzbek or any specific nationality to dine here. Similar restaurants in this area also seem to cater to a family atmosphere only while Uzbekistan has a continual stream of families with kids, romantic couples, pairs of friends, coworker after-hours celebrations. This place is just does hospitality better than their competition. Customers like to linger here and so it has a European laid back vibe in that sense. And so the service is such that they are slower than American chain restaurants because they never want to feel like they are rushing you. Be patient and maybe ask for your check as they are dropping off the final plate/drink to your table. And pay at the register if you're in a rush to go.

Another Great Meal.... Never Disappoints

By hoyasaxa90 |

Just enjoyed another great meal at Uzbekistan. We really love taking visiting family and friends to enjoy a real Russian experience at Uzbekistan. We always include their delicious shashlik like lamb or chicken. Melts in your mouth. Cant comment on desert........ we're always too stuffed to even think about it. Bring your favorite beer, wine, or even a bottle of vodka to enjoy with your meal. Service can sometimes be slow, especially if the restaurant is full.

Excellent Restaurant

By Cin4513 |

I love this restaurant. If we lived closer we would definitely go a lot more often. We try to go early or at off times because it gets very crowded. I’m not sure if they take reservations, i never thought to check. They have tables that can accommodate larger parties, so they probably do. Their pot of tea to share is amazing. We usually get the green tea. It comes with sugar cubes and little dried pineapple pieces. We ordered the bread which is fresh (presumed homemade) hot and delicious. My daughter had the lagman soup which is handmade thick noodles with meat and vegetables (amazing) and she also ordered the vareniki with a sweet cheese inside and with butter and a black current jam. This dish is considered a dessert but she ordered it as an entree. The dumplings (vareniki) were very fresh and delicious. They were delicious. I had the potato vareniki (dumplings) and they were excellent. Next time I think I’d order cheese dumplings, they were soooo good. The prices are more than reasonable and the food is fresh and authentic. I love this place!

Unique, delicious and affordable

By Zekebp |

There are too many superb dishes at Uzbekistan to name them all. We have been there multiple times and have yet to run into a disappointing dish. The abundance of food is absurd especially when you get the check, which is always less than we'd expected.

Great Food. Relaxed Service

By Ken P |

This is the perfect date restaurant for someone you want to spend time with. Once you are seated I don't think they would make any effort to have you leave until you are ready. Some may complain about the slow service and I would not come here for a 30 minute dinner but if you want to spend 3 hours enjoying food in a slow and relaxed pace while having conversation this is the place for you. We ordered two salads, a kebab, a fruit dumpling, a meat dumpling and some stuffed cabbage and each item was brought as an individual course so we could savor each item individually. Each was well seasoned and perfectly prepared. Service is relaxed and even my Russian guests commented on it Bart it actually worked well as we were intent on having conversation. While the complete dinner took about 3 hours and I didn't see any table turnover in less than 2, there was never a time that food was missing from our table. Start with the flat bread to accompany each of the courses. We have a lot of choices and a lot of leftovers and dinner was $80 which are not considered to be unreasonable.

Great ethnic dining experience at a very reasonable price

By Barryt312 |

We have been to Uzbekistan twice and will go again. The menu features dishes from Uzbekistan, Russia, Georgia, etc. at very reasonable prices. The mushroom-barley soup is just amazing! And the Tandoori bread is a must. I had the Moscow fish dish, which was delicious, and had to take half of it home. My wife had a ka-bob dish that she liked. The second time there I had Georgian Chicken Stew, which was delicious, and you couldn't find too many restaurants that offer it. The only criticism I would make is that there are not too many vegetarian options, besides the soups and the gnocchi as an entree. A BYOB too!

Old World Charm, Terrific Food

By FrankDiB |

Six of us went there for dinner; three had been there before and recommended it. First, the circle of bread was outstanding and then the various small plates started coming. We had about 12 different dishes and they were all wonderful. It's a BYOB place and we just happened to have a wine importer with us so we enjoyed the best he had to offer. Parking in the rear, terrific service, great variety of flavors...super evening.

Best food and atmosphere

A taste of Eastern Europe

By Von1234 |

Awesome place. As you walk through the wooden doors. You are taking to Eastern Europe. The owner offered the ten of us an arrangement of food suggestions. We had (. Which is my favorite) Monastirsky, which is chicken livers, fried onions and white radishes. We had medium sliced fried potatoes which was very good. Chicken and beef kebabs ( meat so tender). Ukrainian Borscht, very tasty soup. A beverage called Compot, which is a Russian style fruit punch with whole cherries at the bottom of the pitcher. We had more than enough food for ten people. I enjoyed the food so much I went back on the Monday and took home 2 orders of Ukrainian Borscht and 2 orders of Monastirskiy. This will be my go to place. It not that expensive, you will not brake the bank.

Customer

By Adaaltbregen@yahoo.com |

We are one of the first customers in this authentic restaurant. The ambiance and location is one of the best in north east and Huntingdon Valley. The variety of food for the most plane and picky clients. Always fun, warm welcome and service. Love this place.

Something out of the ordinary

By DMSMD64 |

We ate here with a couple of friends so we were a party of four. We sat outside, in front and it was a very comfortable setting. As a group, we ordered a number of dishes to enjoy family style. We had a Fresh Salad, Pilaf Uzbekistan, Manti (meat dumpling), Kutab (pancake with spinach and feta), and Lula (lamb kakob). We had asked for the hummus, but it was unavailable. The salad was a great way to start. The rice pilaf was good but not outstanding. The Manti and Kutab were the dishes that will bring me back. The kabob was good, but it bordered on the salty side. The prices are reasonable, but not exactly cheap. There is parking in the back. The service was efficient, but English was not the first language spoken.

Numerous returns

By CWBuff |

I have been to Uzbekistan many times by myself and with friends, family and business colleagues\associates (as well as did take-outs) This place ROCKS! The food is awesome and the meats prepared with typical Uzbek flair that makes you want more! The tandoori bread is a staple one simply cannot do without. The staff is friendly and will do their best to make sure you have a pleasant experience. The language can be a bit of a set back - English is clearly a 2nd language spoken here - but it isn't anything to worry about; at the end everything works out. The cautionary advice I have is to keep in mind that 10% gratuity is automatically added to the bill. For whatever reason the place is still stuck in Stone Age with no computerized bills and everything is scrawled on an old-type check-book (restaurant type) receipt by your server; which somewhat does not make the said added gratuities apparent. So if one wishes to give an additional tip - again keep in mind that some is 'already there'

Great food, poor service

By Sofya B |

I was there for my friend's birthday on sunday night. Everything we ordered was very tasty. During my two hours there, noone asked even once if we need anything (not even water). They came twice to take our order for appetizers and for main dishes. But again all food was very good. We had salads, plov, manti, shishkebab, home fries. All very good. I will only return for take out.

Great Russian food - unique and delicious

By Ginkleberry |

My family went here for dinner on Russian Christmas. We ordered bread, borsht soups, lagman kavorma -noodles with meat and vegetables, stuffed cabbage, and lamb and chicken kabobs. For dessert we ordered the napoleon and the apple pie. All the meals were steaming warm and tasted excellent. The apple pie was more of apple cake bottom with an apple pie center and crumble on top, delicious and unique. The food here is wonderful. The service was a bit on the slow side but no so much as to distract from the meal. The good news was the waitress spoke English and communication was excellent. There is excellent free parking in the back of the restaurant and clean restrooms.

Delicious food!

By RickChollett |

Both the atmosphere and food were outstanding! If you want alcohol you must BYOB. The waiter was very nice and pleasant.

Great People Great Food always 1st Class

By Jeffrey C |

Uzbekistan Restaurant is always a must stop for us when we go to Philly. The owner is one of the hardest working people I have had the pleasure to meet. All of the woodwork and everything else is done with his hands and he always makes sure his guests are treated like life long friends..... Kebabs, Borscht, Samsa, and everything else on their menu is top notch. Trust me if you go there once you will go back again for more. We come down from the Scranton area a few times a year and it is always our favorite restaurant to stop at...... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 Stars is just not enough!!!!!
