We had to go when we learned this cafeteria place was not only a favorite of President Obama, but had been featured on Anthony Bourdain. It's worth it. Don't be deceived by the cafeteria line or grumbly cooks; the food is delicious, and the gritty atmosphere is an important reminder that Hyde Park was not always this gentrified.

Living on the far Northside, it took me a while to get down here. The prices, service and dining situation didn't seem like anything outstanding. Then I bit into their ham-off-the-bone and I have been dreaming about this place ever since. Go here if you can.

This is a solid diner, makes traditional breakfast favorites...this includes grits which are sometimes a bit difficult to find up north. The omelets are tasty and the coffee is good. I can't comment on the other foods but overall it's a clean well lit breakfast diner. Cash only. Overall it's a solid place for breakfast that I would frequent if close by but would not go out of my way for. On the other hand, this place is a draw because it was frequented by Barack Obama before he became president. They feature a list of "Obama's favorites" on the wall, looks like pretty standard fare that the 44th president went for! If you are close by worth a look and certainly if you are an Obama fan in the area you should stop by. Even if you are not an Obama supporter you can still come in for the good breakfast!

America needs more places like this, with good cheap food fixed on the spot. Lots of kitchen help turn out the food quickly, and everything we had was good. Abundant helpings, lots of choices, very friendly staff. President Obama frequented here when he lived in Hyde Park.

My son and I had breakfast here during a visit to U Chicago. A couple of items to note: - The line moves fast! :) - You order at counter and have your food in a few minutes (or less) as you pay. Wow. Love it. - Yes, Obama was a frequent visitor and it’s clear from the pictures and his “favorites” menu (I had the #3) - The guy in the pictures with Obama? He’s not a hang out and talk guy, he’s back there busting his butt with his crew to cook your food. Respect. - solid hash browns. Just crispy enough! - coffee is good diner coffee, I can be a bit picky about my morning Joe. Was not disappointed - I really like the community feel of this place. Some business meetings. Some families, friends at tables and a number of groups that were meeting over a meal. Overall I have to give it high marks. Fast service. Clean place. Solid eggs, bacon, sausage, pancakes and great hash browns. I’d give it 5 stars, but it’s a diner, so it seems too fancy a rating for what I consider a solid, community feel, quality DINER. LOVE THIS PLACE. If your in the neighborhood, stop by for a bite.

This is probably my fourth or fifth time visiting valois and they have all been for breakfast. Breakfast is truly amazingly good and fresh and prepared right in front of you while you wait in line. I Love this place, even though they offer lunch and dinner I haven't been able to get away from breakfast. Prices are good, it does get crowded on the weekends but well worth it. A must to visit while in Chicago!!

Eat here and you'll have the fasted cooked breakfast of your life. You order, go through the line, and breakfast may be cooked by the time you pay. Place is noisy, atmosphere is casual, and the food is good and cheap.

Efficient, tasty, great variety, and reasonably priced. I was impressed. A great breakfast experience.

It was just ok. No ambiance. Just another serve yourself diner. Plus there were panhandlers waiting outside.

Valois offers a cafeteria type set up. They have several already cooked entree options to choose from, you then pick a veg, potato, bread, soup etc as you move down the line. The bang for the buck is incredible and the quality is very good. I describe it as a home cooked meal that you didnt have to cook.

Food is greasy and overpriced. However, it appeals to presidents and paupers alike, not to mention the Bohemian and artsy types. Having read a few other reviews, quite possibly there is some gastronomic impairment of the writers. Caveat emptor!

So it's not like there are a lot of affordable places to eat in Hyde Park. This is pretty much it for cheap eats that are good. We had breakfast and we were in and out and the food was good. They could do a little better with having the dining room staff come around and ask if we wanted more coffee, water, etc, they just sort of stood there waiting to swoopi in and clean the table. Maybe that's just not their thing....

I had breakfast on this restaurant and ate a spinach omelet. A good price and nice staff. They open very early and accept only money.

Valois is one of my wife's and my favorite places for breakfast in Chicago. It is a cafeteria style breakfast place. The lines may seem long but they move quick. Know what you want when you get to the front and place your order and have it made by the time you pay. The food is great as well as the location in Hyde Park. If you haven't tried it you should. Do not be afraid of the South SIde.

Can't beat the price, the service, and the amazing traditional diner food! Portions were huge and because we had a large group, we tried a variety of items. Pancakes were a big hit with everyone.

My friends and I were told that this was a good place to eat. We arrived and indeed there was a line and the place was packed. They serve breakfast all day along with the many other items on their menu. This was our first time, so we were overwhelmed by the choices. And you have to know what you want when you order because the line moves fast and they are not all nice nice. Ordering made me think of the Soup Natzi from Seinfeld. One friend ordered chicken and dressing with a side of Mac & Cheese. The dressing was a block of something that was unrecognizable. She took it back to exchange for something else and was told that she couldn't because she already had two veggies. She didn't make a fuss but was very disappointed with the whole meal. Everything (except the dressing) looked good, but just didn't taste like it should. The second friend ordered an omelet. It was huge and tasted decent. We came to the conclusion that everything is cooked without seasoning. My friend added some salt and pepper and everything was good. I ordered the pancakes with a side of bacon and eggs. The pancakes were huge, but nothing to write home about. I would be willing to give the restaurant a second shot as there must be something else to it since the line was long the whole time we were there. Next time I will order something different and also try one of the desserts. They looked awesome!

Visited here early on a recent Saturday morning. The line was medium length but moved quickly and the hot breakfast was perfect. Coffee was very good. Loved the diverse crowd of people. Great south side place.

It was our first time in Hyde Park and we were with a tour and our lunch was included in the price. The reason we were brought here was because this is the restaurant that President Obama loves to eat at. And I can see why! Its cafeteria style eating. You grab a tray and stand in line while they (a group of men) serve you what ever you want to eat from behind a glass window. They had a generous menu. I had never heard of Pistachios and Peas before, but it was on that menu. I'll have to go back and try it some day. The line moves very quickly. The amount and generous portions of food are absolutely amazing. I had their Beef dinner and they cut the meat in front of me so I knew it was fresh. The Beef slices covered the plate, along with a heap of mashed potatoes with gravy and a plate of Broccoli. Not to mention a HUGE biscuit on the side. The price for the dinner was very fair, especially for the amount of food you get. Its basic, yet appetizing and filling. The decor is simple, nothing fancy. But there is one table that has a picture of President Obama on it so you know that must be a "special" table. ;-)

In this cafeteria/fast quality food restaurant, I ordered a Mediterranean omelette and it was on my plate--piping hot--within a minute, it seemed. Friendly staff, very neighborhoody, and I hear that some fascinating political debates occur at the tables. Just a few blocks from the Obama house, it's one of our President's fav places.

I go here twice a week. Easily the cheapest good breakfast option in the area. I've never had non-breakfast food here, or been here later than nine am. Lunch may be a completely different world. A couple things people may want to know in advance: • The place is cash only. There is an ATM on site. There—oddly—aren't many other ATMs in the neighbourhood that are easily accessible. • This is a diner. It is not a rustic diner. It is not a cute diner with nostalgia-inducing décor. It's a diner, bro. You get a tray, walk down the line just like you did in your middle school cafeteria, & then you sit at a table in a large, plain dining hall. You do not have time while you're in the queue to hem & haw over your breakfast decisions. (It is possible to stand outside the line & stare at the menu for a *little* while, but the line needs to keep moving.) You're not going to impress your boyfriend with the ambience. (You could have a nice breakfast date here. But not with a fancy mother-effer*. You should break up with him anyway, by the way.) • You can choose the components of your breakfast, but this isn't the kind of place where you can make a lot of fancy substitutions. You *might* be able to swap out items in a menu omelette, but seriously: They're doing rapid business on an assembly line for a large number of customers. They're shouting out orders. They're not writing things down. If you *really* need a Denver omelette but could you get broccoli instead of green peppers? then maybe you should go to a different sort of place. Or, like, stop being so damn picky. It's good effing* food: Eat it, dummy. My standard is two eggs, hash browns, coffee, & orange juice. That comes to about $8. I think when I wasn't getting the OJ it was $6. This is very good for the area. A comparable breakfast at another nearby non-fancy breakfast place is $15 before tip. The coffee is decent—good for large percolator diner coffee—but it's by no means fancy. The food is of good quality for the price—again, by no means fancy. This isn't a place where you go for a culinary experience, but it's real, solid food. *Tripadvisor won't let me cuss, the brother-truckers.

Was in Hyde Park and went here with friend after hearing it was one of President Obama's favorite places. It's a cafeteria set-up where you order food, get it put on tray, then take it to seat. Menu had OK selection, and pretty inexpensive. Servers were friendly, though a little hard to understand. The roast beef and mashed potatoes I had were quite tasty! I didn't order from it but there's a list of the things President Obama usually orders.

My friends and I had read the reviews of this restaurant and decided to try it while in Hyde Park. We all had very good meals with plenty of food at a reasonable price. The place was busy, but our food was delivered promptly. We were glad we chose this restaurant for our lunch.

Looking forward to a mid morning breakfast with my wife,,,a very short walk from hotel,,,very long line but moved fast,,,, large menu selection for cafeteria style restaurant,,,food prepared extremely fast, everything omelet was my choice, while my wife ordered eggs over easy,,, great portions, excellent prices, great food

I thought this place was awful. The corn tasted like it has been in the pan for 2 days. The gravy the same. The chicken was okay but lacked flavor. The mash potatoes were decent but had a different flavor as well. Wasn't for my taste. I didn't enjoy and didn't eat it either. I didn't complain because it was a cheap meal. I tried my mother's meal and the rice and gravy were super salty. Didn't enjoy at all

Great hard working family that produces the best food from in town scratch. Always great food on a friendly setting. Great job.

I visited with two kids. It looked like the sort of diner where kids would be treated brusquely, but they were friendly and patient. It's a neighborhood restaurant with plenty of tourists like ourselves drawn there because it's a place where Obama used to eat. Big coffee cups helped the servers lengthen their times between refills. Huge portions. Lots of salt. They kept a mountain of hash browns turning on the grill, which was fun to watch while moving through the line.

We went down there on New Year Evening (Jan. 1, 2017) around 6:30. We walked to the restaurant as we were staying in town. There is nothing real special about Valois from an environment standpoint but it is the food and prices that will drive you in. The steak (medium) with eggs and potatoes and coffee was right at $10. The meal was delicious and definitely worth it. The potatoes may have been the best. A friend and me both ordered the steak, she ordered medium-rare. We both agree the steak was good to very good but may have been cooked a little more than expected.

If you're in the neighborhood for the Robie House, the science museum or other business, go out off your way to detour a few minutes for this local institution, said to be one of President Obama's favorite dives from his early years. If you're a boomer you'll find all the old school diner favorites on the menu from open-faced hot sandwiches to chef salads. Cash only.

So very Chicago! Cafeteria line to order and very busy at the cooking skillet. Lots of energy and chatter, yet efficient. They are there to get your food and not offer chit-chat. Reminds me of Seinfeld's episode of the "Soup Nazi" The food is great and people watching at its best. Great Establishment? I will return!

I've been eating here for bargain basement prices since I first came to Hyde Park. Still great value even if my budget is a little better now than then.

This was very good. President Obama's favorite restaurant. I had the President special #3 2 pancakes, 2 scrambled eggs, 2 bacon and a coffee. Fast and reasonably priced. Easy in and out. It even sells commemorative coffee mugs.

Cafeteria style restaurant, great for a fast meal. This place is always crowded but the line moves very fast. The food is good and the prices are even better. This is a must stop restaurant if your visiting the Hyde Park area.

Simple and delicious. Local cafeteria style restaurant with wide variety of scrumptious home made food for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Staff were friendly a d courteous and prices were excellent!

Like the food options which are affordable and delicious. The biscuits are really tasty. The staff are also super charming and lovely.

Native Chicagoan, I moved away but every time I visit this is a must. Close to museums and a local spot with amazing food. I have visited many restaurants and I honestly cannot praise this place enough. The food is simple and oh so good. Everything here is excellent, I wish them the best always because places like this are so hard to find.

So far in Chicago this was the best food by far. We had cheese and bacon omelets and they were perfect. The price was incredibly reasonable and the portions perfect.

I enjoy Valois, my daughter recommended this place to me, she would eat here before her classes at Kenwood. Love the hash browns and turkey sausage.

Loved this place the first time i went there. Have been back several times and i like it more each time. Everything is like it's supposed to be. Perfect, basic American breakfast food. Have not had, and likely will never have, anything but breakfast food from Valois. The only thing that could be better would be to be served, but the cafeteria style is quite efficient and they serve lots of people fast when it gets busy.

My son recently moved to Chicago and one day the street was blocked off because President Obama was eating at this restaurant so I had to try it. We went for breakfast which they specialize in. It is cafeteria style but the line moved quickly. My son ordered scrambled eggs and I ordered a bacon and cheese omelet. Both came with hash browns. We each also ordered a biscuit. The lovely older gentlemen behind the counter greeted me with Good Morning Darling. We wat he'd 5 guys at the huge griddle quickly prepare our breakfasts. The servings were huge, fast, delicious and inexpensive. For $15.00 we both had a huge breakfast. We took half my omelet and both of the gigantic biscuits home for later. The place was immaculate with lots of bus people. The clientele was a great cross section of the city. A very enjoyable way to start the day.

First trip back for a few months but regular guys still cooking and providing fresh, hot food. The omelets, as everything else, is good value. The only thing I wish they would change is the sliced processed cheese they use. Otherwise, great prices and good food. Don't let any line up scare you as they move you through very quickly

My party of two ordered French Toast and a delicious 'Everything Omelette'. With polite staff, scrumptious food and a delightful atmosphere - this is the ideal location to experience breakfast with the locals!

Best for standard breakfeast fare, not brunch. Quick cheap cafeteria style, they have great french toast and pancakes, and it's fun to see how the cooks manage all the orders. Delish value breakfast for Hyde Parkers.

Get past the cafeteria serving option and enjoy a fabulous, tasty, large portioned breakfast. Many, many options for no matter what you are looking for in a breakfast. Fast, made to order, great tasting omelettes were our favorites.

We needed a quick bite before heading to the Science & Industry Museum. This place serves its purpose. The food was good, service was fast, and prices were reasonable. We ordered sandwiches and they were delivered to our table promptly. We were told it was cash only so we were well prepared. There are ample street parking and we found a public parking lot a block away.

The food was absolutely delicious and so were the prices. The menu offers a huge selection and everything looked wonderful.

This is a great place if you like unpretentious breakfast served hot and fast! Very good pancakes, scrambled eggs and bacon. My husband had a very good egg white omelette as well.

This is the place where future President Obama used to have his breakfast , well that does state how basic his Taste is. You could as well have a meal next to a Nobel prize. The potatoes are OK.

Cafeteria style service was fast, quality was good, price was very good. Location is great. Eggs, hash browns, and coffee totaled about $6.

The menu is pretty basic cafeteria stuff so don’t expect grand dining. However, there is a good atmosphere, is affordable and will go down in history as a favourite of Barack Obama’s. The other stand out feature is the guy who takes your order. He doesn’t write anything down, remembers everything and makes sure that you get the food you ordered.

Simply the best breakfast for the price and it's a Chicago icon. Get the #5 and some biscuits, of course.

Don't be put off by the cafeteria like set-up. This place knows how to pump out a quality breakfast, fast, and affordable. It attracts a diverse crowd, so great people-watching too.

I love the food at this place. They cater to all types of food lovers. Your food looks good, smells good and taste very good. My husband and I always end our Chicago visit at Valois!!!

Pretty basic fare, but on the plus side lots of breakfast & lunch staples that are good and hearty, at a decent price. Lots of buzz when we visited.

Was staying in Hyde Park and wanted a real breakfast, no mamby pamby frou frou stuff. Each of my kids and I ordered one of "President Obama's Favorite Specials" breakfast meals and a drink. Our bill was less than $10 each, and every meal was plentiful. Ordering is kind of like the "Cheeseburger Cheeseburger" Saturday Night Live skit, but that's part of the charm. It is cash only as well. I had an omelette, hash browns and rye toast and orange juice. The omelette was great and the hash browns were real potatoes! the toast and juice were perfect. It was a great meal and it was fun thinking that we may have been sitting were the President once sat!

This is a cheap, no-frills restaurant where food is served cafeteria style. We went mainly because we heard that Obama likes to eat here, and ended up loving the food. Great delicious breakfast for a great value. I definitely would recommend the steak omelette.

Wonderful cafeteria style restaurant. Best home made biscuits and potato corn chowder soup out of this world. The sandwiches excellent. There were 4 of us and we all raved about everything. We will go back for breakfast some day. The staff very entertaining and friendly.

This was the 2nd time of coming to this restaurant. It's near the UChicago campus so is a quick choice for good quality local breakfast choice. Valois is a cash only place so leave your plastic in the wallet. Ordering your food is fast so be prepared with what you want - the cooks appear to be prepared to make anything said to them. There may be a wait but it's a short wait and tables open up fast to sit.

This is a family owned cafeteria. During my first visit, I asked one of the chef 's (**possibly an owner** --he is always there in the morning, accent, 6ft, medium build, 55 years old with a dark heavy thick mustache) if they had a restroom. His response to me was, "Don't be asking me no stupid [--], you know were the bathroom is." I was not shocked by this guys response. This place is ghetto. I seldom visit Valois. I like their "Everything Omelet", but the ghetto vibe coupled with pools of standing water, and rat droppings in the bathroom is too much for me to handle. Pros: Food Okay Cons: Ghetto This place reminds me of Walmart.

Sweet people, feel like you're coming to your grandparents and aunts and uncles to feed you. Prices are amazing. The Patti melt was outstanding, as was the rice pudding. Salad was enormous, enough for two. Great value!

Hyde Park Chicago is one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. Not sure why I really feel like I'm in Chicago when I'm there but the feeling is good. That being said, the food at Valois gives me that same feeling. I've been going here for over 20 years and they have never lost their touch. I remember seeing Obama here once way before her was President or even a US Senator. The biscuits are great. I love the cafeteria style setting they have. Point, plate, sit and eat. The service is no frills but cordial and polite. Tip for you. If you go with less than four people expect some one to share a table with you, but it's all good. Give in and strike up a conversation, I bet it will be the best meal you ever had and you'll learn something great about someone. Ya see , people know this going in, so they are always on their best behavior cause no one likes eating good food in a bad mood.

This restaurant has a historic significance and community connection. Unfortunately, those are the things that cloud the judgement of many. It's cafateria food at best. The customer service is selective, so for every good experience there is a horrible one. I love Hyde Park in spite of this place.

I love the quick service, the price and the quality of the ingredients. All diner style comfort food at a cheap price. Breakfast all day. Also love the fact that the "bus-ladies" bring plenty of fresh water to your table as soon as you sit down. Don't expect fancy - grab a tray - yell your order, eat your meal.

I had planned a 4th of July weekend in Chicago with a friend and her boyfriend's friends who are from the city. We had no idea where to go and finally ended up here. The cons were the service and the fact that they don't take cards. The service is not bad but it's as if they are just there to do a job. No one was rude but no one was warm or inviting. And the fact that they don't take cards is an issue all in itself because that's all I carry. The pros were the food. I was just getting over a stomach flu so I could not enjoy it all but what I did have was an all meat omelet and it was great! The prices are extremely reasonable so that was great as well. The people there looked like regulars. They were just eating and watching the world cup. I would come back again for the food most definitely as well as the nice atmosphere but not so much for the mediocre service.

We landed in Hyde Park early in the afternoon, and Valois was open and serving exactly what we needed. I had eggs and bacon, and my friend demolished a peach cobbler. The staff is super attentive. I wish some of Hyde Park's pricier restaurants would send their staff to see the great job done by Valois employees. We'll be back.

Located in Hyde Park area in Chicago (near Obama’s old neighborhood) since 1912, VALOIS is a fantastic casual dinner (“cash only”; no credit cards). It’s an old fashioned “greasy spoon” that makes hot & fresh off the griddle food. I LOVED their fresh stack of pancakes. In this area, you should DEFINITELY enjoy a breakfast or lunch here!

We stayed in a Hyatt just around the corner from this place so we just walked a few hundred feet and we were there! Used Tripadvisor's handy "Near me now" feature and were so happy to find this place. They serve breakfast all day long (as well as other meal items that aren't breakfast). The menu looked great for all tastes. It was a Saturday night when we went and it wasn't too crowded, but still had steady customers. You need to speak clearly and loud enough for the cook to hear your complete order. One son asked for bacon but not loud enough so didn't get it. Husband asked for some grits but again, they are mumblers so hey, they didn't get those items. Live and learn. The desserts all looked delicious but sadly we had zero room to indulge. Maybe next time. The workers are courteous and efficient. We got full meals and drinks for our family of four for $26. Can you beat that in Chicago? No, you cannot. When we sat down a son said "Man, did you see that cook? He is a BOSS! He remembered everything we said and did it so fast!" He was amazed. Plenty of belly filling good food that is so easy on the wallet. Speaking of, buyer beware, this is a CASH ONLY establishment. We would absolutely visit this place again for any meal of the day.

Well, the biscuits are a no for me. The classic pancakes and bacon are a yes. The staff moved quickly considering there was a line out the door.

Saw this restaurant on Anthony Bourdain's "Parts Unknown." It did not disappoint. I had the hot beef and gravy and my wife had the chicken pot pie. The prices and very reasonable and the taste was great. Just make sure you have cash on you.

Valois is a great cafeteria-style restaurant. This breakfast is hardy and tasty- wonderful omelettes and pancakes.Dinners are Grandma traditional and we are vegan so i have not had dinner there.

I had never been to Valois’ in Chicago and had been wanting to go for years. It clearly stated before ordering on a handwritten note, “Cash Only” and I did notice a nonbank branded ATM. I asked a counter person before ordering I don’t have cash could you take a card? This person told me “the lady over there has a machine”. I misinterpreted her statement to mean they could swipe my card, and my big brother and I went ahead to order our breakfast. The cooks prepared and put the food on our trays and I then slid them to the cashier. She said it was $28 dollars and change and I handed her my card and was told cash only! I replied that I did not have cash and was told “they had a machine and would not have ordered cooked food before ordering but was told, “they had a machine”. She directed me to go around the corner. And now the story gets worse, I went around the corner to another person who I thought was the person with the machine and once again presented my card. This second lady pointed to an ATM machine which I had noticed earlier and now I understood! Voila the ATM which was now going to help me whilst my food was getting cold! I inserted my card and it dispensed the requested notes to me. I looked at my bank statement today and there were (3) separate $3 dollar fees so my $80 dollars cash cost me $89 dollars total. The 9% “Inconvenient fees charged by the ATM I thought was exorbitant! Their food was nothing exceptional but it was hot. The personal lesson was to take cash!, I left an adequate tip for the bus person cleaning tables because the whole bad situation of miscommunication was not their fault. The parking had already cost me $5 so everything added a very bad taste in my brain. IF I ever go back cash is king so be advised that the merchant has a friend that has unsatisfactory fees! But, I probably will choose to go to another restaurant that has less “friction”. As a World traveler especially after Covid, I assumed that they would take plastic especially after being told “they have a machine” by 2 people. CASH ONLY no matter what 2 employees tell you!

Great place for breakfast/brunch with a large menu served cafeteria style. Inexpensive, but cash only, so be prepared for that. Supposedly was a favorite spot of Obama's before he became President, and I can see why.

I had breakfast here with my wife and two daughters three days in a row while on a short vacation. The people working here are very friendly and welcoming. They were so friendly to my youngest daughter and the gentleman taking the orders from the grill made us feel like family. They recognized us the second morning. The food is outstanding. We will be eating breakfast here tomorrow as well (our last day of vacation) and will be back the next time we're in town.

I enjoyed breakfast here every morning of my trip to Hyde Park, where I stayed 2 blocks away at the Sophy Hotel. Eggs & pancakes & omelettes & coffee were excellent (very large portions, tasty, and relatively inexpensive), tables were spotless, and counter service was FAST and friendly.

Who could ask for more? The staff at the counter were great and so were the people delivering food to the tables. The Reuben with thousand island dressing was to-die-for good, and we also loved the Steak and Eggs!

A Hyde Park landmark. Great breakfast food, an enviable assembly line, and a cashier who knows his clients, chats amiably and makes sure you have everything that you need. Highly diverse clientele and week end regulars who greet you and your family on your frequent visits to Chicago. Tables are well serviced by attentive bus-staff.

Valois is the Hyde Park diamond that has the best food ever. You don't need a lot of money but make sure you bring cash and an appetite. Very large portions of standing customer service. If you are ever in Hyde Park make sure stop at Valois!

We wanted to get to the Museum of Science and Industry when it opened on a Sunday so we took the bus to Hyde Park and got breakfast at the Valois. This is a great local place - Obama's house is about a mile away and there's a sign listing "Obama's favorite breakfasts". The service is cafeteria style, although they bus your table when you're done. Be ready to order by the time you get to the counter - things go quick here. We both had Denver omelets with biscuits. They were excellent, though I could have done with a little less cheese (not a big deal). Definitely pay the extra dollar and get a biscuit. Our total bill was under $12 - it doesn't get better than that. Cash only, but at the price that's okay.

Valois is, what can I say, where I go when I get home sick! Those guys whip up breakfast almost like mom's! It's a slice of Chicago in living color every time I go there. Good mix of all ethnicities, cultures, political camps, SES levels, genders, non-binaries etc. The food brings people together! Raw and real Chi town, check your class identity and million dollar ego at the freakin' door, get ready to lick your fingers Bro! Love me some Valois Cafeteria !

Everything here is great but i like the spinach best!!! i live in town and this is a place of choice for my lunch.

Stayed at a nearby hotel and had breakfast at the Valois six times. Extensive menu, cheap prices, great food with a down-home feel. Great place to relax and enjoy breakfast favorites. And perhaps it's redundant to say this in Chicago, where people know their meat (!), the bacon and the sausage were the best. Should have ordered bacon, sausage links and sausage patties -- all three -- every day. Very fast service from folks who get to know you quickly. Love this people-friendly place.

This is the local diner where my kids live and it lives up to its reputation of being tasty , cheap and plentiful . I will say that it's nothing special but if you want cheap plentiful diner food with Southside vibe and friendly camaraderie, then this is the place for you. The coffee , although not being expresso was surprisingly good by American standards and hot and fulsome . I'd go for that alone . The hash and bacon are wonderful but the poached eggs a bit on the watery side . I like how there are egg white options . A favourite of Barrack Obama, it's worth a tourist visit too but I'm guessing by the lines( although they serve you super quickly) , that it's not only his favourite .

Comfort, good old fashioned, no frills, satisfying breakfast. Fast line ordering but the like able owner or manager (not sure which) makes sure that the customer gets whatever they want, however they want. So in other words, you're free to change your order at the last minute and the cooks, servers, and attendants will care to make you happy. Does well for a quick breakfast, in other words, you can be in and out quickly. Good service, especially for a cafeteria style (on sit-down service) place. No kids menu but I've seen a kid clean a plate of a large stack of pancakes with some type of berry sauce which was delicious and not too sweet. Close to perfectly cooked standard eggs, fluffy pancakes, french toast and other breakfast foods...presents well and delicious despite the busyness of the kitchen. Good coffee. Large open busy and bright dining room full of chatter where you're likely to see others from the neighborhood. Family friendly, mixed crowd and solo-diner friendly, for example, someone who just wants to enjoy their routine of coffee and newspaper. I would like to see them have healthier drink choices, specifically, limiting the juice to all organic, low sugar and small serving sizes for kids, and some other kind of milk for those who want to avoid dairy or lactose. My family really enjoyed the food and experience, it's just the kind of dining choice that is always a winner and the food hits the spot, especially for a lazy or hungry morning.

Our hotel recommended Valois for breakfast, and I'm so glad we went! This is an old-fashioned cafeteria, where you line up to order your food from a series of helpful, cheerful and fun workers. And what food! We ordered poached eggs (cooked to perfection!), wheat toast (toasted just right and delicious), and bacon (were supposed to get three pieces, and got five--all crispy and perfect), and coffee (excellent) and hot tea (very good). It was the perfect way to start the day, and we would return time after time gladly!

Valois is a fast service diner in the middle of Hyde Park. Best for breakfast and lunch. It's cafeteria style to order your food in line and sometimes its cooked by the time you reach to pay. There's a few Obama breakfast favorites. I had the typical two pancakes, sausages and eggs. Actually plenty to share between my wife and I.

if you are in hyde park and dont go here, then shame on you! u cant get better food then this...l have only had one mishap here but l overcame it and just had to be more obserative when ordering my chicken. lt didnt stop me from going back though...l love their desserts its a chocolate lovers dream indeed!

After reading about the restaurant's history, five of us went for a Saturday evening dinner. We were aware that it was served in the old-fashioned cafeteria-style of our youth. The food was good and brought back memories of eating good lunch room food in the "old days of the 1950's and 60's." This is not fine food dining, but simple, hearty, inexpensive and filling food. Our total bill was about $60 and that included some add-on's like dessert and teas. The ribs were tender and juicy. My Mother loved the tender chicken. Vegetables were OK, but I would skip the broccoli which needed a bit more steaming. They also do take-out.

Reliable, very popular, cafeteria, hence the motto "See your food". Famous for breakfast, when you might encounter Barack Obama, but don't overlook lunch and supper. Solid dinner entrees in the $7-8 range, such as roast beef, chicken, fish, pork chops or stew. Steaks a bit higher. I had meatloaf, which was a gigantic portion and tasty. Only disappointment was veggies, cooked to death. On a previous visit, I had great corned beef and cabbage. CASH ONLY! (But you won't need very much of it.)

My father choose this restaurant for a birthday breakfast meal. I had never been before. I'm gad he choose it! Everything here was great! We both got the 2 egg breakfast except I had sausage and toast and he had bacon and an english muffin. The eggs were scrambled and cooked to perfection. The sausage was very good along with the toast. The potatoes were very flavorful and good as well. My dad wanted some crisper bacon so they made it for him on the spot....no problem. They made the toast fresh along with eggs. We had a seat by the windows and had a very enjoyable breakfast. They have lunch as well so I would definitely go back.

It's a well established neighborhood institution in Hyde Park, Chicago, and somewhat of a touristic attraction as it is also one of Obama's local favourites. The atmosphere is relaxed and the decor is very simple. The place serves breakfasts all day and that what i would go for. The food portions and taste are good. It is not great, and it's priced accordingly. We've had breakfast over there several times and we sampled most of their breakfast menu. Everything was average, nothing was exceptional and nothing was bad. However this is not a place to lunch at, certainly not for kids. They don't have kids menu and the selection is not appropriate for that. All in all, nice for breakfast, if you have little one, go elsewhere.

I first visited Valois a few years ago after hearing that it was a popular spot, mainly because President Obama frequented the place prior to becoming President. Back then the area was a bit spotty with some economic development starting up. A few years later and this area is much improved with lots of new retailers and shopping areas. The restaurant hasn't changed at all and I guess this is one of its strengths; consistency. The breakfast is OK and not much better than many breakfast spots. Its about 20 mins out of downtown along US41 at the 53rd Street exit. I'm not sure it's worth the trip if you are not driving. Places such as West Egg in the city are much better food quality wise....even if Obama may have not eaten there.

We stopped here for lunch because President Obama has said this is his favorite restaurant in Chicago. The food is delicious but it is strange little place. You can see all your food and order, sort of hospital cafeteria style. I ordered the grilled cheese and side salad, all of which was delicious. My daughter ordered the steak and mashed potatoes, which she LOVED! The staff is friendly and the place is clean, but it is NO FRILLS on every level. It is nice that POTUS likes this place.

My wife and I stopped for dinner at Valois based on a recommendation. The diner is cafeteria style with no frills. However, If your out for a good reasonable priced meal this is the place to go. The hamburger steak was super tasty and a generous portion to boot. The gravy and mashed potatoes were just like mom made when growing up. The Ribs were meaty and the barbecue sauce was thick and sticky, just the way you want it. Rest assured we will be back fro more when in Chicago!

From the entry into the restaurant, to the counter that awaits you and staff that serves you, this location offers a step into the past as well as fine breakfast cuisine. Highly recommended if you are in this part of the City.

Valois Restaurant on 53rd in Hyde Park - whose tagline since 1921 is "See Your Food" - continues to dish out delicious, super-reasonable specials, sandwiches, salads and desserts. It's unfussy home cooking like the yummy BBQ half-chicken special, which included 2 sides. I chose mashed potatoes and gravy as well as garlicky spinach and the whole thing was $6.50. A Diet Rite added another $1.00. This is for basically a sit-down dinner. Can't beat it. You also can't beat the feeling that this place has been here forever. The decor is clean and spacious but also spare. It's rare and wonderful to set foot in a place that could easily have changed its look and the kind of food they serve, but they have kept it consistent for 93 years and going strong. Here's to another 93 years of Valois and "See Your Food!"

Went here for breakfast while visiting our daughter at her new apartment in Hyde Park. One block away; this place will always be on our list of places to go while in the Chicago area. I used to be a breakfast cook many years ago, and watching the crew work was really entertaining, as was the interaction with the kitchen boss and the gentleman on the register. Orders are strictly verbal, and payment is strictly cash. Good, inexpensive food with a pretty comprehensive menu. No alcohol, and no BYOB (which is fairly common in the area), but the ambiance is really the attraction here. How many restaurants serve Kool-aid as a beverage? The drink of my childhood... Really enjoyed this place and will be back...

Only cafeteria where we ever ordered prime rib and got the whole thing (bone and all). And it was cooked perfectly medium rare. An eclectic mix of patrons, from business people, other locals and college students. Nice selection, food was really good and prices reasonable for the area.

Valois is truly a Hyde Park institution. Great Breakfast food! Also, the Obama Menu and table are worth a photo or 2.

This restaurant was within walking distance from our hotel. When we checked-in the first night, we were all tired and hungry. We walked to this restaurant and ordered a takeout. The food was plentiful and delicious with complimentary rolls on the side. It was so good, we went back the following morning for breakfast. This restaurant’s set up is like a school cafeteria. When you walked in, you get on line and place your order and move along the counter until you get your order. The food is home-styled cooking – only someone else is cooking for you! I don’t have any photos of the foods we ordered because we were all too busy eating them. I bought their mug with President Obama (who dine here often) for $5. This is a cash-only establishment.

Everyone in hyde park has to go to valois. Place your cooked order at the beginning of the line, it's done by the time you get to the end; generally breakfast items are not premade. Cheap, huge crowds, satisfying. I've had better omelets but I paid 2 - 3 times as much.

Valois is an old style cafeteria style restaurant. I enjoyed a wonderful breakfast at an incredible value. This is place is even visited by Barack Obama!

The Valois Cafeteria is the best reasonably priced place to eat in Hyde Park. There is a daily variety of main courses. The food is gre at. It was good enough for Obama, so what can I say? It i not fine dining but it is very good food. You could spend a lot more nearby and get a lot less! I had a l baked half chicken and 2 sides plu s bread for less than $9. Give it a try and you'll be back like me!

This is a cash only place to eat and we’ll worth every Penny. The food came fast, hot and very good. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were large. We liked it so much, we ate here twice

For the price. We fed 4 adults and a kid for a grand total of $38. And it was good! Quick and tasty. A couple breakfast, and 3 of us had sandwiches. I had a Ruben. Generous and very good. No frills. Went on a Sunday around 4 pm - no line. Bring cash. Would definitely go again.

My boyfriend mentioned this placed to me while we were in Chicago, and had breakfast here for my birthday! There was no wait time, it was actually on memorial day around 8am and they are making the food as you go with fresh eggs and pancakes! and you don't sit down until they place your food on your tray, it was basically cafeteria style. We paid and picked our table, and of course we chose to sit with Mr. Obama whom they had the actual table where he sat and ate before, they laminated a signed photo of him on the actual table which was basically the highlight of it all. The food was yummy, better than basic, it had taste and I loved the #3 of OBAMAS FAVORITES and my boyfriend ordered the #1. We left very satisfied because it was so simple yet so good! We would definitely come back here and recommend it to our family and friends.

Sometimes atmosphere is everything. Valois, pronounced Vuh-loy-eez by the locals, is a Hyde Park tradition and landmark. Obama used to frequent here when he was a lowly civilian. In fact, you can still catch many political leaders such as Preckwinkle and Jesse Jackson having breakfast meetings here, and mixing it up with the common man. The news crews routinely stop by when an Omaba event happens. Even Hillary Clinton and Bernie Sanders were scheduled to stop here during the primaries. It's run by an extended Greek family who serve up generous portions of diner food at rock bottom prices. You will definitely leave here full, but perhaps craving a bit more flavor. It's a must visit when you come to Chicago. Stop by here before or after your visit to the Museum of Science and Industry (about six blocks away). It's cash only!

The restaurant is cafeteria-style surprisingly. Between us we had Baked Pork Chop, Grouper, and 1/2 Barbequed Chicken. Along with a variety of sides, all of the entrees were delicious. Some of the most tender bbq chicken I've ever had. The serving size was also a bonus. Along with the generous portion of bread, it was delicious.

I often wonder if TA is good or bad for the restaurants, however after arriving from London as a family of five and deciding to look somewhere decent for breakfast it allowed us to find this amazing gem. The food is of course spot on however it also just made us feel connected to this amazing city simply due to its authenticity. One of my highlights to Chicago, can’t wait to come back.

I have been coming here for almost 30 years and I have never found a better place to have breakfast or a "homemade" meal of comfort food. Everything they make is good and the prices are fantastic. There is always a line to get in and you order the food at the counter and take trays to your table. Don’t worry that you won't get a seat. It ALWAYS works out that as you enter the dinning area a table opens. It is like some kind of magic!

Best French toast in the Midwest! We love Valois and the staff. Cannot beat the prices in the Hyde Park/Chicago area. We go for breakfast whenever we can. Very hard to park, otherwise we'd get lunch take out more regularly as well. Go! You may see President Obama, Rev Jesse Jackson or other local politicians and notables on any given morning!

No one goes to Valois for an upscale atmosphere. It's very down to earth and gritty--pun intended on one of the foods served here as well. This is an old fashion, noisy and wonderfully perfect chicago-style brunch joint. The place is constantly packed with locals, students and faculty from U Chicago. It's dirt cheap and amazingly good. You can't go wrong here. My favorite is the Obama breakfast. Yes Barack himself used to frequent this place. Don't expect to see him here or at the Med anymore, but you might see some great folks from the neighborhood and some very prestigious U Chicago Nobel Prize winners--I prefer the neighborhood folks myself. The eggs, grits, sausage both pork and turkey are awesome and the hash browns which I douse with ketchup are terrific. Conversations are lively here and people actually engage in discussions about national and local politics. Everyone is polite and welcoming and don't let the long lines put you off. They move very quickly.

Valois Restaurant is President Obama's favorite Hyde Park restaurant for a very good reason. We dined here based on reviews from another site, and because of historical significance. The portions were ample and delicious. I ordered macaroni and cheese with a hamburger steak and onions. My wife ordered baked chicken and dressing. Very good food, great for the money--under $20, including drinks.

Super value for families. Validated parking. Very nice people and great food

I have been a patron of Valois since my daughter was born many years ago. They used to be great, but they have changed over the years. I am old school. I loved this place at one time. On the surface, it appears that breakfast was the same, dinner was the same and things were the same, but the happy go lucky atmosphere is gone. It appears to have the same owners, but they are just not like they used to be in my personal opinion. During the holidays as a family we like to visit, but for a family dinner, I am going to have to find somewhere else to go. I think there are more younger people now than the old timers that used to frequent the place. Just my take.....

great food, great price, you will definitely get full, bring your appetite! Remember to bring cash as they do not take credit or debit cards. They do have an ATM.

Went with my wife’s family. I enjoyed the Ruben Sandwich. French Fries would have been great. The Hash Browns were not good. Sample my wife’s BBQ Ribs, they were delicious. Valois also has good looking Stew and a Prime Rib. Cash only!

I ate breakfast at Valois on Sunday morning, June 19th, 2022. The large menu offers a sizable selection of breakfast options. I was hungry. I ordered pancakes with a generous helping of blueberries on the side, oatmeal which came with brown sugar and raisins on the side, hash browns, orange juice, and water. A sign on the outside of the restaurant says you can "see your food." Indeed, I saw the person who took my order scoop my oatmeal from a huge pot into a bowl, stir my hash browns on the grill then plop a generous portion on a plate, and meanwhile I watched another person pour pancake batter on a grill and prepare my pancakes. I paid for my food at the counter, and the food and juice were ready quickly, almost as soon as I paid for them it seemed. After I took my seat, a waitress brought two glasses of ice water. I'm a big water drinker and appreciated getting two glasses. The food was tasty and reasonably priced. I was planning to visit the Museum of Science and Industry and took the #6 bus south to 53rd street to enjoy breakfast at Valois before walking some blocks from the restaurant to the museum. I'm not sure about the calorie count or fat content. But their comfort food is tasty. The day I ate there perhaps about 8 a.m., most of the other patrons seemed to be persons from the neighborhood. But my guess is that it attracts a diverse clientele. It offers a tasty breakfast at a reasonable price with quick service and a wide variety of selections. I recommend it and hope to eat there again on a future Chicago trip.

mainly a breakfast place but does serve lunch and dinner. walk up to the counter get your tray order your food then your drinks pay the cashier take your tray and pick up table. very reasonable prices quick service. while it serves a lot of working class normal day today people but President Obama stops there when he's at home in Chicago. everything from omelettes bacon and eggs in the morning to roast beef dinner in the evening. great place to go when you need to eat on the run but you don't want fast food. you can normally get your food and be at your table eating within five minutes after you walk in the door.

I love this place. It tastes like home to me. Sausage, eggs, hash browns, buttery toast, side of bacon. I always go overboard in here and I'm not even a breakfast person.

After reading previous reviews we decided to try this place for breakfast. A real treat to go back in time and enjoy an old fashioned cafeteria style restaurant. The food was good and servings were plentiful. Great coffee!

Simple and tasty food for a reasonable price. The Obama special is a must try! Portions are huge and prices low! Be prepared to order fast because! The staff will not let you compromise the flow of the line!

This place is great very friendly they serve breakfast all day and lunch definitely hit the spot!! There is no way you could go wrong if you come here.

I realized as I took my seat that I hadn't visited Valois in more than 10 years; no particular reason ... I just hadn't! What I know for sure that I'll likely be going back within 10 days!!! Valois is a not so hidden treasure!

I'd heard such good things about this place. Down home, authentic South Side Chicago. Good, home cooked food. Well, no, not really. It is cafeteria style, which is fine. But the veggies all come from a can, the beef was seriously overdone, it was just not very good. But, hey, what do I know? The line stretched forever. People clearly love the place. But I found it to be average at the very best. i will say this, it is cheap.

Very special. I'd say Chicago landmark. If you are looking for fancy food or atmosphere, it is definitely not the place. How do I put it? It is very simple, inexpensive and tasty. Absolutely worth to visit, but almost impossible to describe. Come to see for yourself, but do not bring your girlfriend... Cash only. Some say it was the favorite Obama's place when he was at the University of Chicago.

This cafeteria efficiently turns out a wonderful breakfast. The folks behind the counter are friendly and helpful. Our Mediterranean Omelets were perfectly cooked - neither runny nor overdone. The combination of feta cheese, tomato and spinach (#5) was perfect. The hash browns and biscuit rounded out a perfect breakfast!

President Obama has his own table in this cafeteria style eatery. My experience was breakfast with the 3 egg omelette with bacon and cheese with a side of potatoes or grits and choice of toast or biscuit. More than the girl could eat in a sitting! The omelette cooked to order was done before you get to the end of the counter to check out. It was delicious but very large serving. Lines were long but moved fast. Make a decision and commit!

Friends took me here on a recent trip to Chicago, and I got one of the Obama specials, the steak and cheese omelette. The restaurant itself is fairly unassuming, but they really have food prep down to a science, and the result was the best omelette I've ever eaten. Fluffy eggs, melted cheese, bite-sized pieces of steak. I already want to go back for another. Keep in mind that they don't take credit cards. If you don't have cash, there's an ATM in the back of the restaurant.

Until my wife and I started to enjoy breakfast during our vacation trips from coast to coast--we didn't have breakfast when growing up and didn't pick up the habit after we got married--we still took us a few years before we decided to begin a morning at Valois Restaurant in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood. Located at 1518 East 53rd Street, Valois became famous and popular when it became known as future President Barack Obama's favorite breakfast destination, when he and his wife were living on Chicago's South Side. Open at 5:30 a.m. daily, it is a counter-serve smorgasbord operation offering American comfort food in a casual, mural filled, cafeteria-style, cash only venue. Old-timers and regulars still talk about the time Obama and NBC Newsman Lester Holt chatted over coffee and eggs and bacon. Since we became aware of the restaurant, near the University of Chicago campus and the Museum of Science and Industry, we have stopped by for breakfast and lunch on different occasions. For lunch, we had chicken pot pie with cole slaw, Florida grouper with Julianne salad, hot turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes and gravy, corned beef sandwich, peach cobbler and rice pudding. But breakfast is a real treat, a great way to start the day. I had steak with two scrambled eggs, hash brown, home-made biscuits and jelly. My wife had three slices of French toast with maple syrup, two sausage patties, fruit, toast and jelly. If it's good enough for a President, it's good enough for us.

We are regulars at Valois-- by which I mean we eat there about twice a month-- and we don't come close to the real regulars-- the people who are there every day. We come for breakfast a lot. Our usual breakfast order is: omelet (veggie sometimes, Denver sometimes, egg white sometimes) 3 orders of pancakes 1 order of french toast 1 order of bacon 1 order of sausage 1 order of hash browns (the omelets come with but my spouse likes extra) 1 coffee with cream 1 coffee, black which runs us less than $20. Our usual lunch order is: 3 eggs, scrambled biscuits 2 slices of raisin bread hot beef or hot turkey sandwich chicken special peach cobbler or pie or cake (we share 1) which runs just over $20 It isn't fancy food (thank goodness). It reminds me of splitting the cost of buying and preparing food with someone else-- they are doing all the work and you are paying them for ordinary food, rather than paying them for some grand culinary experience. And you aren't even paying for a brand, just for food, coffee, and someplace to sit while you eat it. There's some reputation that the people aren't very nice, but I've found them to be unfailingly polite and even indulgent of my kids, usually interacting with them and asking what they want. Since Valois feels off the beaten path, it is mostly locals, but it's not far from UChicago or the Museum of Science and Industry. Hit the Museum, take a short walk (yes, it's a very, very safe neighborhood) or an even shorter bus or Metra ride (super fun for the children) or Divvy ride for the big kids/grown ups to check out 53rd street.

If you're near University of Chicago and want a comfortable, reasonable, quick place for some very good cafeteria-stye dining, this is your place! It's a great place for a group, the steaks are cooked TO PERFECTION, and the staff is cordial and efficient. We had a couple of Obama's favorites (listed on a board at the counter) and thought the homemade hash browns, whole wheat toast, steaks, and made-to-order omelets were excellent. The place is clean and bright and friendly with a very diverse crowd of people. We would definitely return for any meal.

The aroma of freshly brewed coffee hits you as soon as you step into this cafeteria, setting the tone for a delightful experience. The baristas here are skilled, and their attention to detail in crafting each cup is commendable!!!

This mid-century-style cafeteria serves excellent traditional American diner fare. Breakfast items are served every day. We eat here practically every time that we come to Chicago but their vegetarian omelets and hash browns are so good that I’ve never tried anything else. The restaurant only accepts cash, but I think that there is an ATM inside. A paid parking lot is nearby.

There are a few unique features about Valois. First, it is Cafeteria Style, it's been year since I was a restaurant that served Cafeteria Style. Second, cash only. Third, breakfast all day. The food is good and proportions large. The menu is large, but know what you want when you come up to order. The service is fast and good. The prices are very reasonable. We will be back and yes we recommend you give Valois a try.

We found ourselves in Hyde Park for a weekend. The highlight of our Saturday was breakfast where “you can see your food”! Fast, friendly service, very organized and absolutely delicious omelets and breakfast sandwiches! We will definitely return!

Usually I will go there for a brunch when I am out of milk at home. Very affordable. But everything is too big there, too much calories intake. Cash only.

We went here for breakfast because it was in walking distance to our hotel. What a treat. Good food FAST! And the biscuits are out of this world!!

Was recommended this place by my host. It was cheap quality food. I went there for a late lunch before flying home. In all honesty, there was too much food, and normally I would have taken some home with me, but this wasn’t an option on the day that I visited! I finished my food and then didn’t eat again until I was on the plane that night! I had the steak wrap and fries. It was delicious! I would definitely recommend if you are in the area. Cash only and closes at 3pm(I think)

This place is famous because President Obama loves to eat here and because it is great value. Valois is a cafeteria-style restaurant that serves extremely delicious food at great prices...plus, they do breakfast all day--jaaa! We walk in, grab a tray, and immediately the head cook asks us what we want...we order our eggs, bacon, sausages, potatoes, and toast...then we move on to get drinks...then we move on to pay--cash only. Huge breakfast for two, under 20 bucks. . .wonderful! Everything is cooked perfectly...we eat happily hoping for an Obama sighting, but it is not happening today. This gives us incentive to return here again and again eating great food at great prices while looking for 44. Eat here...support a great restaurant...and put some love in your belly.

I think that this is one of the best eggs-places in Hyde Park. Moreover, it is extremely cheap! with 7 dollars per person you get a meal with a drink and, you will be full for the rest of the day... the quality-price relationship is very good! i think that if you go there you shoul definitly pick the omelettes. also, for vegetarian there are very nice omelettes options. The hashbrows are also very good. moreover, despite what some people may think, the place is always very clean! and the stuff is friendly and happy to talk to you. the nice thing is also that students get 10% discount! great!

Join the fast moving line to a great breakfast in a Hyde Park institution. Perfect for tourists, students, and diverse locals. Clean and courteous atmosphere. Loved the steak and eggs, the crispy hash browns, and the various omelets our group sampled. Generous portions. Fine coffee. Will return every time we visit Hyde Park.

This is Obama's favorite place for breakfast. It's unpretentious and fast, delicious and cheap. Bring your cash: scan the menu quickly, and be ready to remember your order. You can make replacements and they'll serve up your food as you slide your tray towards the cashier, grabbing coffee, syrup, etc. on the way. Pancakes, eggs, its all great here and in big portions. When I rowed at UChicago, it was our favorite place to go as a team—so fast and easy, and you get a ton for your money. Always worth the visit.

Valois is the oldest cafeteria style restaurant in the United States. Founded in 1921, it is a counter-service smorgasbord of American comfort food. Diners can see their food as it is being prepared. Located at 1518 East 53rd Street in Harper Court in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, west of South Lake Shore Drive, it is a bright space with skylights and murals and TV and is open from 6 to 3 daily. Also, it is a cash only operation. Valois is a popular breakfast destination for commuters and students and faculty members of the nearby University of Chicago. I started with oatmeal with raisins and brown sugar and the No. 1 item on the menu, New York steak and two two scrambled eggs with hash browns and wheat toast. My wife had a big appetite and opted for a Denver omelette with two green peppers, ham, onions, cheese, two sausage patties and hash browns on an English muffin. Yes, she finished it all. Our friends also joined the clean plate club by fully consuming their breakfast choices, French toast with strawberries, two sausage links and an English muffin and two scrambled eggs, sausage, hash browns and raisin toast. Why did it take me so long to appreciate breakfast in the morning?

This is a cafeteria type establishment. The line moves quickly and the staff are friendly. I enjoyed breakfast more than dinner. The dinner was fine just not anything extraordinary. The breakfast was delicious and filling. You will definitely get your money's worth at Valois.

There really is no other place in Chicago like Valois Restaurant in the Hyde Park neighborhood of Chicago. The only place that I know of where you can sit with a perfect stranger and feel weirdly comfortable about it - don't get me wrong, you can get your own table but it's quite normal to share a table at this eatery. Trust me you will have a great conversation - who knows it may be Barack Obama. Beyond the eclectic environment of people and culture, the food is beyond generous and fulfilling. The variety of daily specials is something you won't see at a fine dining or chain restaurant, not to mention the cost of your order at Valois is uncharacteristic to today's prices at any restaurant. Beyond the wonderful food is the character and service of the ownership and their staff...many of whom have been there for 25+ years. Generations of staff are working at Valois. This is a Chicago landmark restaurant where Harry Carey would often dine, the Obama's grabbed their breakfast and scores of local residents, including University students and faculty would get their best meals for the day. You want to experience something wonderful, then just come to Valois.

I've been here three times and have had great service each time. The food is always delicious and made to order. This place is unlike any other with a unique cafeteria setting. Seen famous people dining while we were there.

Apparently president Obama used to come here. So we took a chance. Wife wasn't thrilled with cafeteria style but it was surprisingly good. And the price is hard to beat. If in Hyde Park and need breakfast or lunch. Definitely worth a stop in.

We went to Valois for brunch on Sunday. The pancakes with strawberries were delicious, and the French toast and omelette were equally good. Staff were friendly and it was excellent value- $25 for all 3. Highly recommended .

We found ourselves in Hyde Park after a long hard day. Initially stopped at Chant across and down the street. It was late and we were tired and hungry. Chant took a while to seat us and give us menus. When we saw that one bowl of soup was $8.00, we decided that we were not "dining" but rather in need of "survival" food. Walked across the street to Valois's cafeteria style restaurant (also a favorite of President Obama's). For $8.00 we received one complete meal which was hearty enough to share. It was a much better choice for us that night.

Good food, reasonably priced near The University of Chicago in Hyde Park. No frills, solid breakfast and lunch. Cash only, Greek owned, all classes & colors of people have gone here for years!

best breakfast

My family and I visited Valois Restaurant today and the food was absolutely delicious! The service was excellent, great prices, and my picky 7 year old twins enjoyed their meal. I would highly recommend dining here if you are in the Chicago area!

This is a good breakfast place. I had eggs, bacon and biscuits. The biscuits was surprisingly huge to me. I couldn’t finish them all.

I've been here a few times and this place is always good. Not fine dining but a get in line diner that has fast inexpensive good food. We stopped in for breakfast the other day as we were waiting on a job and had some time to kill. I had the Everything Omelette with hash browns, side of bacon and wheat toast. The food was done fast and was very good. The wait staff is attentive when you need them. At this place you get in line, order your food and they put your plate hot and freshly cooked on your tray as your paying. Then you go find a seat and if you need something, the wait staff is at your service. Also a great place to see a good slice of local Chicagoans. Always a diverse crowd of local residents and working people with plenty of folks from the University of Chicago sprinkled in.

Stopped here based strictly on trip advisor reviews and close proximity to science and engineering museum and close to bus line. What a fantastic place for breakfast. Great food, low prices, good service in a great atmosphere. French toast like I had as a kid back in the. 60's

decided to give it a try after reading that it was Obama favorite restaurant when he was teaching in Chicago. they only accept cash and food was simple and fast. the only attraction was that Obama picture hanging around the restaurant and food was average
Interesting Place
We visited this place because parents kept saying this is an Obama favorite. Obviously it is what the store has displayed itself as well. Food items are actually good to my surprise (I guessed I expected less. lol) Steaks were done well. Harsh brown was done as I asked for. The bread was interesting and I did not remember how they call it. Like a mixed of cornbread with a fluffy cake. A place one can try. :)
