Our friend lives in the neighborhood and took us to this local spot and we loved the service and the selections.

You know you are in for a treat when the homeade pasta restaurant you are sitting is is filled with little old Italian woman. The food was the best Italian I can remember. Incredible pastas. Its located in a small space on Cortland Street in Bernal Hill. Didn't feel like an Italian restaurant atmosphere, which isn"t necessarily a bad thing. Fortunately I live nearby so this will definately be a new haunt.

The food is consistently good; I have never been disappointed. It is a tight squeeze and when the place is full, it can get pretty loud so difficult for conversation.

Very casual and very reasonably priced The fresh arugula on the pizza was one of my favorites.

Pizza is outstanding however we like broccoli rabe on top of our pizza , so we placed a double order of the rabe. To go. They substituted broccoli without informing us. Great disappointment when we got home.

We had a lovely evening at vega which we happened upon and so glad we did! Calamari to start was delicious is a very tangy lemon sauce. Followed by gnocchi with Gorgonzola for me and linguinin fruntti de la mere for the other half - very large portion and loads of sea food but perhaps too much pasta. The gnocchi was delicious, soft and creamy cheese sauce, yum. we had an ice cream sandwich to finish off which was ok, wine was good too, it is a smal restaurant and was very busy, never a table free for long during our two hours there, the staff were very efficient and kept us topped up with water and wine, overall a great experience

My wife and I ate at Vega twice within the past 2 weeks, and both experiences were A+. The salads are fresh and plentiful. We had the Insalata Romano on one occasion and the Carciofini Ripieni (AA+) on the other. For entrees we had the lamb chops, the Boscaiola, and the pork ribs with polenta (a chef's special that night). All of the entrees were exceptional. They were hot, plentiful, and really tasty. If you love gnocchi, you have to try the Boscaiola. It was decadent. They offer a very reasonable wine list; we bought a bootle of the house red (a sangiovese), for an incredibly low price of $20. The service was fantastic. In addition to the wonderful waitress (didn't catch her name but she was from New Jersey), we continually had our water refilled, and olive oil replenished, by a variety of staff members. This place really offers a fine dining experience at a very reasonable price. The Bernal Heights neighborhood is very fortunate to have such a gem in their neighborhood.

Pizza was good but pricey. We had truffle and capricciosa. I do not get why pizza outside of italy is so small. Ingredients were fresh but, and dough was good and crispy. There's defo room for improvement. House red wine was quite good. Service was fast and the lady who served us was nice. Place is small and gets packed quickly.

Delicious Italian food in Bernal Heights. Food is always great and the staff is very friendly. I love the vibe of this neighborhood spot very cozy little restaurant on popular Cortland Avenue. Everything was fresh and very homemade tasting - the servers were friendly and were knowledgeable on each dish. Minestrone ~ flavorful vegetable soup Impepata di Vongole e Cozze ~ the mussles & clams in garlic, white wine & chili flakes sauce was delicious I kept dipping my bread in the broth it was that good Burrata Pizza ~the mushrooms on the pizza was too strong barely tasted the burrata will get another one next time Fettuccine with Wild Boar Ragu ~ simple yet hearty dish could use a bit more herbs and spices Gnocchi Alla Boscaiola ~ mushrooms, italian sausage, parmigiano & white truffle oil made this one tasty pasta dish The Torta al Cioccolato ~ a little too dry the vanilla ice cream helped me eat this rich dessert. Overall I enjoyed my dining experience at Vega. Suggest to order family style and share appetizers, pizza and pasta dishes so you can sample and enjoy more delightful dishes. 4 stars for this gem.

We had a great Italian meal here with a superb Puglia wine, and friendly service In particular I loved the gnocchi .... Most mains were around $20 ish, but the quality of the cooking is awesome Highly recommended for a special night out

Small intimate restaurant that serves great quality food. Worth the effort to go to. We went 2 nights in a row and it was excellent each time. The gnocchi was my favourite.

This small intimate trattoria in the Bernal Heights neighborhood is well worth the effort to get there. Unless you live there, you will need a small and worthwhile journey to get there. The winding roads etc with some great SF views are definitely worth it And when you arrive, you will be feted with a most enjoyable and delicious Italian trattoria experience. Capellini with Dungeness crab was light and flavorful. Pizzas were thin crispy crust with a diverse selection of toppings. Vegetarian inc carmelized onions covered with arugula was very good. The crust was a highlight Sea bass was the featured fish tonight. It was also light and flaky. My host goes every two weeks. It was my first. But it won’t be the last .

I recently tried this place while on vacation. We had an amazing server named Luca, who had an awesome Italian accent. It really made me feel like I was in Italy. The pizza was so authentic and delicious, and our server really took care to make great recommendations for both food and some great wine!! If you're lucky enough to be in SanFrancisco, go eat here! The ambiance, service and food are worth a trip to San Francisco alone!!

Excellent variety of quality pizza at reasonable prices. We were a party of six and there were no tables available. Next time we hope to eat from their interesting menu!

I've eaten in "destination " restaurants that were nowhere near as good as Vega. From the delicious bread brought to our table to the astounding housemade pastas, great wine list and wonderful fresh salads and vegetables, everything was marvelous. The staff is knowledgeable and attentive and the atmosphere is lovely and convivial.

We were dining with friends and wanted a place that was real and intimate! This was a perfect choice. Inspired: the Gnocchi alla Boscaiola Service: excellent Atmosphere: noisy small local place Return: Yes!

Vegas is one of those great neighborhood finds located in Bernal Heights. The food is comfort Italian - excellent pastas, pizzas and entrees. It's the kind of place I would go to again and again if I lived nearby.

The staff completely forgot to give our order to the kitchen. The result was that it took an hour from the time we ordered to get our food. And they weren't remotely interested in trying to make good by giving us a discount or a credit for our next visit. The food is fine, but it's not worth the price or the terrible service.

We loved it to entering to leaving it was fabulous. The food and the people were awesome. Would suggest it to all of my friends

Can not fault this place! One of the best Italian meals I’ve ever had. Setting, atmosphere, service and especially the food were all excellent. Try the wild boar ragu.

We wanted something close to where we are staying and ran across this restaurant. There was a little wait but worth it. I had Halibut over mashed potatoes, capers, olives, tomatoes and sauce. It was their special of the night and it was so tasty and very good. I would definitely go back if I was in the area.

Locals know where to go for a friendly, affordable dinner location. Service is friendly & prices are reasonable.

I love the pizza at Vega! The rigatoni is out of this world. Simply put, fantastic Italian food! Most importantly, they have super nice staff. Thank you so much Vega.

We have had dinner at Vega many times over the past year and every time the food is excellent!!! The owners are very friendly and remember us each time we come in. The restaurant is small and reservations are advisable as it is a popular place to eat, and it seems that every month more and more people discover it !

Vega is one of my favorite Italian restaurants in San Francisco. It has a cozy environment with a good menu. My favorite dishes are the gnocchi and their margherita pizza! Great food and well worth the price. I highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking great italian cuisine. I cant wait to return!

Solid choice for a casual night of comfort food. Visiting in town from Atlanta and met an old friend and local who loves the Gnocchi here - indeed it was worth the visit! Cozy little restaurant with friendly service and a local vibe. We were dining with kids and the wait staff was accommodating and friendly.

I am so sorry to have to write this review. We have eaten here several times before and have enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. However, our recent dinner was extremely disappointing. Maybe the owner was having a bad day, but he treated our party of 5 disrespectfully and was very rude, which is especially disappointing given that it was one of our friend's birthdays. One of the meals , the veal special ,was so tough that it was inedible and one of the fish orders was not put in correctly.

Had dinner with my wife. Great welcome by the owner, and great service by the waiting staff. Food was great . Can highly recommend you Spaghetti puttanesca and Pizza 4 Fromaggi. Really good. Definitely will come back

Really great Italian fare - hopping atmosphere. The putanesca rocks as do the pizzas. The staff were all super nice and helpful. The prices very reasonable too!

We went to Vega on a Thursday evening at rush hour. We had a reservation which they instantly honored. Service was unobtrusive but excellent, the food was really quite good, even for SF, and the prices were reasonable. I'll definitely be going back. Recommendations: Try the octopus starter (no, really!!!), the pizza margherita, and house gnocchi for sure. Salads were good as well, and there's a small but reasonable wine list with some interesting selections.

Crowded Wednesday night - but that added to the ambience. Table by the window, hearing the Spanish in the kitchen and the Italian between the staff. Didn't feel at all like the burbs of San Fran. This little eatery has great prosecco, fabulous boscaiola chicken with gnocchi and marinara. Best to book I think as it's a favourite with locals.

A great neighborhood eatery, food delicious, affordable wines, cordial service. Parking is a challenge. Vega is a small restaurant, where your table will be inches away from from other tables creating a very social dining experience. We enjoyed meeting and chatting with a couple to my left and a young family on my right. Definitely not for a quiet romantic dinner.

Last night my husband and I walked to this little place for an early dinner. We found out on Wednesdays any bottle of wine is half off! We ordered a delicious red and salads. We also ordered the mushroom pizza and grilled calamari both were excellent but the pizza was especially scrumptious with its paper thin crust and just the perfect amount of seasoning. We will be making this one of our favorite stops.

Vega continues to be a secret, local go to neighborhood restaurant. I ate here the other night as a solo diner the staff was attentive, helpful & welcoming. Had the capellini w/ crab & enjoyed it. It was a generous portion & large enough to take some home for lunch.

I just have to say that this little place was amazing. The staff is friendly and quick. The cooks are amazing. The food was incredible. We have stopped here twice already on our 4 day trip. It's small but worth the wait. It was my little taste of Italy.

Came here on our first night in SF as local to us. Lovely atmosphere and great service from the start. Really good options for vegetarians. We had the margarita and vegetarian. Both really good! Decent sized portions but not ridiculous! Decent price also - €40 for two with drinks. Can recommend for a nice mea in Bernal heights

I don’t know how you could go to a better restaurant! I have been going to Vega with my family for eight years and have never once been disappointed! The staff are kind, sanitary, respectful and responsible. If there is even the slightest issue with your food they will bring it to the kitchen and bring you a new dish within minutes along with no extra charge. The food is incredible and I couldn’t have asked for better! Keep doing what your doing Vega!

Well if you staying in the centre of SAN Francisco you probably won’t come out to Bernal Heights but it might be worth it. This little restaurant is a gem. Fantastic veal pasta and delicious burrito. Couldn’t be better.

Found this place on a city walking tour and thoroughly loved it. Come to the city occasionally from the North Bay area but rarely ever make it to this part of SF. The staff was pleasant and attentive without being invasive. The food (Italian) is fresh and interesting. Gnocchi to die for. Tiramisu stands up to the best of them and I am pretty picky about good tiramisu. Most places just can't quite get it right, but Vega nailed it. Yum! Reasonable prices. Delightful owner. Go check it out.

Stopped for dinner after drinks and nibbles at a friend's house. We had a reservation, but the owner is a friend of my Italian teacher, so we were slotted right in and given a little VIP treatment. A cozy place that's a lot like being back in the old country. The gnocchi with pesto were light and delicious; the short ribs were a tad salty for Mrs. Sothoth's taste. Salads are large and a good value at $10 (can't believe I'm saying that, but that's what it's come to here). We will be back, perhaps making this a destination for pizza night. Dinner for two with some wine was $90 before tip.

The food is amazing!!Vega restaurant offers a real italian food. It worths a visit!! Good dishes, good wines and correct prices!!!Congratulations!!!

A homely style restaurant with great staff, a varied menu and excellent service. The pasta servings were generous- even for our 2 yo grandson. The restaurant was busy - even early in the week, so we were glad we'd booked.

Wonderful handmade pastas. The gnocchi with mushrooms and sausage was terrific. Cozy and warm on a cool San Fran evening, tucked into a great neighborhood (Bernal Heights). Loved it, would definitely go back.

Not a fancy place and a bit loud, but a fun easy place to go with friends. Would not go all the way accross town, but we drive from Noe to go. Also convenient for meeting friends who are coming up from the peninsula as it is close to 280/San Jose exit. I like their salad, and pasta. While not a calamari fan myself; a friend who is a bit of a snob about calamari said it was the best he had had in SF.

We were a table of four without reservations... The meal was good. Homemade bread and excellent olive oil helped with the long wait for food. We had the broccoli rabe pizza (excellent and tons of rabe), the mussels and clams (also excellent) but cold when it arrived and the grilled bread served with it was over toasted. No matter, the flavor was excellent. Also had the gnocchi which was very good but a fraction over spiced with chili. I thought a bit overpowering but I still enjoyed it. It came with sausage which was really great. Our last dish was the lasagne which my son loved. I had a glass of wine. The service was good. I would have awarded another star but had to rate it less one since it took so long and some dishes were cold. But I would certainly return and recommend it. Tasty neighborhood place.

Hand made pasta, beautiful sauce, large serve, quality wine, great service and reasonable price! Win!

I love this neighborhood gem! I am happy to make the drive from the Eastbay to go to Vega. The owner, Vega, often hosts and is a big part of making my dining experience special. She also has great recommendations for wine and I nice wine list. I LOVE the clams and mussels in broth with toasted bread. I could drink the broth. It is a small place, but I never feel like I am on top of another table. I love the warm lively atmosphere and friendly service. Plus parking is much easier than in most parts of the city.

A friend who lives in the Bernal Heights neighborhood of San Francisco suggested that we have dinner at Vega, an Italian restaurant in that area. Despite its having been open for 4-5 years, we had never tried this restaurant before. First of all, we were greeted warmly by the husband, one of the husband-wife co-owners, who escorted us promptly to our table on a busy Saturday evening. The servers were quick to bring menus, bread, and olive oil while we're perused the wine list and food offerings. Our server was particularly knowledgeable about the various Italian and California wines on their list. Two of us had the homemade gnocchi in Gorgonzola and fontina sauce. "Heavenly" was the way I described my first (and subsequent) bites. The gnocchi was soft and cloud-like, with a burst of potato and cheese flavors. One person in our party had the capellini with fresh Dungeness crabmeat, tomatoes, olive oil, parsley. Amazing flavor, as well! Vega, it turns out, is the wife's name. She came over to our table to check on our food, and was incredibly welcoming to us. We found out that we actually lived in the same neighborhood as her husband and she, so she said she hoped she'd see us again ... both at the restaurant and in the our neighborhood. What a delightful experience! We'll be back again soon.

Please forgive me if my attempt at Italian is incorrect because I'm not Italian--although I should be because it's my favorite cousine! For a rather somewhat small neighborhood restaurant, Vega has a rather impressive menu. Their food seems simple, but one bite and you know it's not. The food also is hearty; but most importantly it's DELIZISO! I love the thin, crisp, crust on their pizza and have never had such a delicately battered, melt-in-your-mouth calamari. And, if you like gnocchi, this is the place! It's also a great place to bring your vegan/vegetarian friends, because most of the recipes can be ordered vegetarian style. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, a separate bar, and a full complement of wines and Spumantes/ Proseccos. Vega is located in the quaint shopping district of a true San Francisco neighborhood: Bernal Heights. Within a few blocks of Vega there are wine shops, tiny (but delicious) bakeries, grocery stores/deli's, garden shops, card & gift shops, pet stores, a library, playground, and much more. That said, parking can be a challenge, but dinner at Vega is a lovely way to wrap up a visit to Bernal Heights.

Very little restaurant, I am glad we made reservations. Even though there were only 8 other people there when we arrived at 6:30pm it took nearly 45 minutes to get our appetizers. We were very hungry. Luckily dinner was very good! We had the homemade gnocchi,to die for and the short ribs very good! Also had the pizza, thin crust and good too.. Would go back one more time, hopefully service improves and that was just a fluke.there was 4 people waiting for to go orders and it seemed they were served before the dining room?

We were staying in Bernal Heights, and the menu at Vega caught our eye. We tasted our friends' minestrone and grilled asparagus, both excellent. The saltambocco (chicken, not veal) was ver flavourful. The fettuccine with ragù cinghale was nice but a bit under seasoned, and this cook would have featured the meat and not overwhelmed it with tomato. Flourless torta di ciocolato was excellent. Montepulciano and Sangiovese by the glass were both outstanding. Overall good experience with some spotty service that was handled well by management.

We went to Vega with family on Sunday night. Thankfully we had reservations because the restaurant filled up quickly and had a line waiting out the door. We started with an appetizer of Dungeness Crab with endive, cucumber and avocado and the most delicious Mussels and Clams from Pt. Reyes .For our entries we had Gnocchi Della Casa one with tomato/basil and one with gorgonzola/fontina, Spaghetti Puttanesca, Pappardelle Al Ragu and Saltimbocca Alla Romana. The pasta portions were generous with enough to take home for the next day. Went through a couple of bottles of lovely Sangiovese. We're an Italian family and know good Italian food and Vega is an excellent place for authentic Italian cuisine. The wait staff was very friendly and attentive and we joked that that the gnocchi were almost as good as our Nonna's. We'll go back.

We would have never found this place if we weren't with someone from the area. Its the small little neighborhood gems that always turn out to be one of the best places to eat. Its all authentic Italian food, made to order. Everything was fresh. Everything was delicious! Not a quiet place, like I said, its small, and tables are close to one another, but you're with the locals who know its going to be delicious food. Service was very good, as busy as they were.

Small Italian restaurant near Mission St. In addition to small but excellent Italian menu, serves Neapolitan pizzas. Highly recommend sautéed calamari, gnocchi brascaola. In the evening, can usually find street parking within a few blocks. Friendly staff.

My husband is the pickiest eater, that hardly gets impressed by food. Not only did he say Vega was his favorite Italian restaurant (which is saying A LOT), but he held on to the menu to bring home to Salt Lake City! (I don't know what he is going to do with it...frame it?? lol) The food and ambiance in this little neighborhood was marvelous. Thank you Vega!!
Good food, but noisy
We enjoyed the insulate casa but the linguine mare was excellent Would recommend reservations as it’s a very popular place.
