Clean and Natural Contemporary Mexican American food

By TomForsythe |

Good food and a good atmosphere. There is a real feeling of natural ingredients and fresh taste to the food. Our party enjoyed all their menu choices. We liked the friendly, brisk service, the casual presentation as well as the food.

Not your standard “Mexican”

By Patrick B |

And that’s a good thing to me. We had friends in from out of town and they were staying in Beaverton and didn’t want to come back to “the city” after spending a few days in downtown for a conference. So, we gave them a choice of places and considering they had their 3 year old with them that really limited the options considering they wanted to “experience portland.” Thankfully they chose Mexican and we explained this isn’t going to be tacos and beans and rice and they said okay but I don’t think they believed us when we said no really they don’t sell tacos. If you can get past that, don’t get me wrong tacos are probably my favorite food, then you’ll be very happy. This is locavore dining really and every ingredient is great and treated with love by the kitchen. and they were super nice to the very, very energetic 3 year old I mentioned earlier!

Great Farm to Fork Mexican Restaurant

By acnona |

My husband and I had a very delicious lunch at Verde Cocina in Sylvan. There are other Verde Cocina restaurants in Portland but this is one on SW Canyon has been open a little over four months. The food is plentiful, well-prepared and yummy. I ordered the "special of the day" which was two tortillas filled with cheese, on a bed a freshly prepared veggies and topped with chunks of brisket. My husband had the veggies with scrambled eggs, candied bacon chunks and home made corn tortillas.

Finally a good restaurant at Sylvan!

Great mexican food, imaginative menu, great cooking, great service and nice ambiance. A great improvement over all previous restaurants at this location.

best guacamole in Portland!

By jebranford |

The food at Verde Cocina is always very fresh - both in appearance and in taste. Their guacamole is the best I've ever tasted and many people agree that it is the best in Portland, Oregon. The staff are helpful and pleasant and the restaurant is clean. The only drawback is that its location is a bit awkward to get to, so it isn't a restaurant that you might drive by on a main thoroughfare and say "Let's stop and eat there." The restaurant is well worth the brief circuitous route, however.

Washington Boind

By janrick2016 |

The food was okay. The wait staff were very good. The food came out quickly. This is a good place to eat if you are vegan or gluten free, but maybe not the best place for traditional Mexican food. There was not a burrito, tostada or chimichanga to be found. On the night we went there the outside temperature was 94 degrees. Because of a malfunctioning air conditioner the temperature inside was even hotter which made for an unpleasant dining experience and the main reason for the ‘2’ rating.

This is for all you veggie lovers

By Daniel D |

While this place may be five stars for many people for me it was just average. That being said, I am much more of a protein guy than a veggie guy. This place seems to be all about veggies and some fruit surprisingly. My wife had the Chicken bowl and I had the pork bowl. Both our meats we agreed were just ok at best. The veggies she loved and she is more into that sort of thing. There were even some apples in there. Kinda weird I thought. I did however love the guacamole which saved this review from my perspective. Their salsa is good as well. Overall if you are veggie lover than this is your place, if you aren't than I might recommend somewhere else. My recommended dish is the guacamole.

First time visit

By Kinch7979 |

My son and I visited at dinner time. We ordered appetizers since the dinner items were highly priced. We ordered the fundido, it was described like a cheezy dip. When we got it, it was a small portion of vegetables, mostly potatoes and yams, the chorizo was bland, and a minuscule amount of cheese, definitely not a dip. We needed to eat with a fork, as unable to use chips and tortillas. We also ordered the Ceviche. It was mostly lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, and looked like a salad. I could not taste lime or cilantro. It had some scattered pink fish meat. We paid $19 for the two appetizers. Very mediocre flavor and small proportions for the price. The building is old and musty, there was a fly landing on our water pitcher. Our server was okay, just didn't seem like he wanted to be there. I would not go back

Great casual lunch spot with innovative salads

By ToonPgh |

Recently stopped in for a quick lunch with the family. Kid Menu options are available. Summer salad with quinoa was fresh and fantastic as were the drink options - both wine and beer. Pork Gringo Mole was spot on and would recommend for a casual mid-day spot. Gauc was fresh. I didn't find it too pricey. On the lighter side. Fresh funky Mex.

Not for the rice and beans crowd ... and that's good!

By Jonathan A |

Very well prepared, subtle, with a nod to your good health afterwards. The dishes are quite plentiful serving wise, my mole enchiladas plate could have fed both of us. Grateful too that the mole sauce did not drown out the fantastic pork and fresh made corn tortillas. Chicken quesadilla lunch special was fantastic. Ate the rest of that for dinner. Was very surprised to find the restaurant pretty full given its very odd location. That's good.

Paleo Margaritaville

By Ivan K |

Temple of Paleo Mexican food in PDX. Nothing fancy, but true to paleo form. Basic stuff, not cheap though. Sauces are good . Menu is limited. Portions could be more plentiful, but hey they are using organic stuff! Lots of Tequila choices with a Happy Hour. Try the Carne Asada in one of its incarnations or the chicken mole enchiladas. I don't go there often but I've been back a half dozen times. I'd really give it about a 3.7 if I could refine my rating. Worth a try especially if you are into the paleo thing.

Great addition to this neighborhood

By Paul W |

We've visited the Hillsdale Verde Cocina several times and decided to visit this location which is closer to our home. The food was great, as expected. Though getting to the restaurant is pretty obscure, once there the place is great and service was wonderful.

$4 for a cup of hot tea??!!??

By CarloCowboy |

I have always wanted to like this restaurant because it is close to my office, but every time I go I vow not to return. Broke the vow recently, and now hope to recall why NOT to go. The $4 charge for a cup of hot tea was just the shock at the end. $3 for a glass of ice tea. Food is not very interesting and the excess raw vegetables were annoying (even with my vegetarian diet).

First dining experience in PDX

By Kevinandanna |

Enjoyed dinner with cross country friends at their recommendation. Good choices. Small kids menu. Fresh guacamole and salsa delish but charged as apps. Fresh tasting food.

Went for happy hour

By SDFlipFlops |

I went to happy hour with 8 co-workers, not all of us there at one time,on a Friday but we were there pretty early. The food was okay and the price typical but the service was so bad I dont know why anyone would return. Not only was the guy UNfriendly but he give us such poor information when we asked about something. We thought the location would be a great place to start going since its not to far from our work place. But we all decided we'd rather drive out of our way than to get that bad of service.

Awesome healty Nexican Food

By lynneV8645HI |

Food is healthy and extremely good. Everything is served with vegies. I especially love the Chile Rellano!

O yeah!!! Ole'

By Yodatravel |

Food has the wow factor. Their guacamole is wonderful with their homemade tortillas and sauces. Great and helpful waitstaff. I got to sample the bacon before trying it. Oh my... decadent! Like bacon candy!!! They gave us a full carafe of cold water so we never ran out. The bowl was outstanding. If you're nearby, don't miss it. Healthy and fresh food. Absolutely not your standard greasy mexican faire. Highly recommended!!!

Not your typical greasy Mexican food

By Kathleen W |

If you want a big hot platter of greasy meat covered in cheese (a heart attack on a plate) this is not the place. If you want healthy south of the border flavors in reasonable portions with amazing flavors then run to cocina verde. Be open to experiencing healthy Mexican food and you won't be disappointed.

Very pricey

By Heather R |

It's eclectic mexican food off the highway on a dead end street. Sat outside, which was nice. The menu is very different and very pricey for what you get. The service wasn't as good as it should have been for the price. Ordered extra chips for an appetizer and had to ask 3 times before we actually got them. Wasn't that impressed.

Good food, but not recommended for Thanksgiving

By AnnElizabeth97123 |

Have been here other times and the food was good, different than other places and the menu can meet a wide range of dietary needs. The logistics of Thanksgiving were slow at best and the food was ok. There were set seating times which caused long lines outside in the cold. The staff seemed distracted as had to ask for drinks multiple times, the wrong desserts came to our table when we had just gotten our buffet food, then the correct ones came before we were ready.

Fresh did I say Fresh ?

By Bobby59 |

We have been coming for a couple of years now, and they always have interesting and fresh, did I say fresh, entree's. They have both vegetarian dishes ( I love the Chili Relleno) and meat dishes. They have a busy smallish bar on the main level and the bartender mixes a great drink. They make fresh tortillas too. The wait staff is always very helpful and friendly. In the warmer weather you can sit outside and watch the world go by while enjoying a fresh margarita.

Visiting my daughter

By Monica S |

We went for lunch today at Verde Cocina, last visit we were at the Hillside one! The meal was delicious, I had beef enchiladas with a butternut squash sauce, oh it was sooo good! Everybody had something special, my daughter & I had great Bloody Maria with all kind of stuff like pork belly, green bean, okra, pickled peppers & chilies salt on the rim!

Unique, healthy mexican food.

By Robin S |

This is not your usual menu. They offer organic, vegetarian and meet dishes. They offer a full bar. They also have patio dining when the weather is good. There are not many options in this area and it is worth checking out. Lots of free parking.

Yum!

By lke2013 |

This place is great! They were very understanding about my family's various food issues. Nice variety of food choices.

Vegie Mexican!

By pdxworldtravler |

A lot of vegies in the mix but they have more traditional beef items as well. The target is a full platter of fresh and good vegetables as well as the main entree. The rocks margaritas ( or especial Tequilas) are also worth the trip.

YUM

It's an adorable place with an awesome atmosphere. The food is fresh and delicious! We are visiting from out of state and I'm So happy we chose here! Wonderful! Will come back next time!

Eclectic and uneven menu

By acepdx |

I've dined here several times as it's convenient. I've had above average and below average food. Same dish can be inconsistent. Staff tries hard, and usually pretty good. Seldom too busy, and maybe that's why it's a little uneven. It's like owners can't quite commit to putting some money into refreshing the place, which it needs, or letting it slide into oblivion.

Skip this mediocre experience

By Northx |

So many elements to a meh visit... - carne asada salad came out stringy medium rare in large chunks when ordered medium well. - an order of three street tacos was to include one of each type, overcooked shredded chicken, pork and weird veggie (microwave cooked yams as a featured item) but delivered all chicken. Tortillas very thin corn that fell apart as you try to eat them - sangria was basically a wine spritzer, not sure if they have heard of the internet but recipes are available - mobile heater placed on the floor next to the table as a nice trip hazard - overcooked veggies paired with a literal bowl of cooked garbanzo beans as a side - our chips and salsa (a plate with some chips) delivered to another table then to us which is creepy, then another tables food delivered to us and taken away to them. - forgettable “homemade” salsa options Overall a combination of poor food and lazy service. Too many good restaurants in town to bother with this one.

Fresh Food & Friendly Service

By thatkatcal |

Ate here for Thanksgiving. It was not a traditional Thanksgiving meal as it was heavy on the fresh veggies (along with a carrot soup) and light on the starch which was fine with me. Everything was well prepared and the service was very friendly. The bread pudding dessert was not that exciting but the rest of food was good. This is my second visit here and I would definitely recommend it. There are few choices in this neighborhood -so they seem to do a steady business. In the summer, the patios are popular, although they pretty much only offer a view of the parking lot and sad office park. Close to the Oregon Zoo.

Good food but abysmal service

By millron |

Based on a good review in OregonLive, my wife and I had dinner tonight at Verde Cocina-Sylvan. First off, though the location is hard to find, it’s a great spot, inside the old Big Red’s. There was no one at the front desk to greet us when we arrived. It took a few minutes before any of the servers stopped and welcomed us. Seating people there is a lot like a tour of the Humane Society… as we walked, she kept offering up tables until we took one. The menu is vegetarian and honestly, the food is not described well. Nothing read like it was going to be great… so much so that I asked my wife if she wanted to leave. We would have if not for the great review. Empty tables far outnumbered the seated ones and employees were on a one-to-one ratio with customers. Still though, the service was abysmal. Our waiter only had two tables but the deadly sin in my book is that he paid the other table all of his attention. They got drink refills, appetizers and entree’s all before we got anything… even though we were seated first. He never checked on us after another server brought us our dinners and the way he asked if we wanted another round of drinks was by saying, “You don’t want another drink do you?” The food was good but don’t go expecting Mexican food. I’d more accurately geo-locate the cuisine in Chile. It was not the least bit spicy. The Carne Asada was simply steak, potatoes and vegetables. There was nothing Mexican about it. The chips and salsa were $3 and though the super crunchy chips will please your dentist, the salsa had less spice than Heinz Ketchup. The food was good, particularly the vegetables. I wanted Mexican though and was let down. I was very let down by the amateur service. I won’t be back.

Great spot!

Headed here after hiking by the arboretum and was pleasantly surprised by the menu options and happy hour. Worth checking out if you’re in the area.

Healthiest quality food in town

By MoronesTribe |

I am on a keto diet and I just say that word and they tell me what they can make. It's always great! They serve a great variety of healthy local veggies with every entree

Good food, excellent seafood stew. Casual but good...not cheap. Fresh, Local.

By Dennis |

Casual place but with a nice feel and a patio. This place has changed over the years and this is the best restaurant in this space so far. They serve traditional Mexican food with some more upscale dishes. They focus on local and organic and are vegetarian friendly. Try the vegetarian chili poblano or the seafood stew that is available anytime although not on the lunch menu. It is not cheap Mexican however it is worth it for the healthier and more adventurous offerings.

Great Fresh Healthy Mexican Food

By Beth R |

My daughter has raved about this restaurant near her home, so on my last visit to Portland we decided to eat here. The beer choices were excellent. We shared our entrees: chicken quesadilla and steak tacos. These entrees are substantial and are different than you might imagine. All fresh, local produce is used and you can build your own tacos and quesadillas with the ingredients on your plate. The guacamole and tortillas are made fresh and are delicious. Service was outstanding.

Top Drawer Mexican Place

By Rick H |

If you like slightly upscale Mexican do NOT hesitate to spend your lunch or dinner time here. Really good food and the marguirita's were wonderful, as well.

Healthy Mexican Infusion

By mcg1978 |

If you are looking for traditional mexican with a twist of healthy infused food than don't go past this place. The meals have loads of healthy veges and salads included in the traditional mexican dishes. The meals were brilliant and not loaded with cheese as you usually get in usa. Do not miss if you are looking for a good healthy meal.
