It's ok, but not great.

By Evan S |

I grew up on the Near North side, and I miss Lou's and Geno's and Due's and even Gulliver's, so it was with high hopes my wife and I went recently to Via Chicago. First let me say that the service was spot on, the young lady accomodated all our requests with a smile and the wait for the food was not unreasonable. The menu is limited to just a few items, we chose the antipasto which comes either meat or veg, the waitress allowed us to go halves of each type. It was ample and tasty, if a bit unimaginative. The deep dish pizza was so-so, the pepperoni tasted off and the crust lacked the buttery crumbley crunch of the true Chicago item. An itty bitty small pie cost $16 which seemed kinda pricy. The concrete floor and glass boxiness of the dining area makes for a very unplesantly noisy atmosphere. Next time I'm jonesing bad for some Chicago pizza I might order one from here to go.

Best canolis in Portland!

By Motsy K |

We took our 4-year-old grand-daughter here for lunch to have her first canoli ("a whole one all for herself," as she put it). She already loved pizza and loved the spicy slice of pepperoni she had here (too spicy for me, but I loved my 4-cheese slice and the delicious green salad). The canolis here are the equal of any we've had in Italy--not too sweet and made to order so the canoli shells are crisp and light. It's not easy to find a perfect canoli anywhere, but these are perfect. It was a delight to watch my grand-daughter enjoy every single speck of hers and then declare that canolis were better than ice cream. Go midday to avoid crowds at suppertime.

Great Chicago style pizza

By Tulsadivers |

It was my birthday and my wife asked me what I wanted, I said lets get pizza. i NEVER eat pizza so it was a treat for me. Anyway, she found some highly rated place on TA and we went there. It was all flat goat cheese girlie pizzas. I said, I'm not eating this, and found Via Chicago on TA and said, We are going here. Glad we did. That was the best crust I've had, (handmade fresh). The pie was big, we got a medium and it was just enough for the 4 of us. It was so good. The place is small and the pies take like 40 minutes so getting a table might be tough. They also had a lot of great beers on tap. Then go two doors down and get some ice cream at Salt and Straw.

Pretty close to the real thing...

Ate here because we were hungry after a very disappointing experience at Pok Pok Noi and were happy to see that you could buy by the slice. Being very familiar with the "real thing" in Chicago I had to try it. The crust was well executed and the sauce was nice. They did a good job. They also hold a community Euchre night every other Monday. That alone gives it a thumbs up!

Amazing crust - a must try if you love pizza

By Alice |

A wonderful deep dish pizza with the perfect crust...crunchy, and very flavorful. It takes a while to bake, so call ahead and enjoy at one of the picnic tables when you pick it up. The deliver too! Glad we stopped in - another great experience in Portland!

I've had better

By Travelnat |

I'm pretty picky about my pizza and sad to say this didn't live up to my expectations. I've never been a fan of deep dish or super thin crust, but I gave it a try. We just got a single slice. First off it was cold on the inside, even when crisped in the oven. Second, I was drowning in cheese with very little of the pepperoni I had ordered. The crust was incredibly thin, and the majority of the pizza was cheese with sauce on top. Personally I like nicely proportioned layers of crust, cheese, and toppings. And the crust tasted like a less than delicious pie crust, unlike a typical slightly bready crust. Overall, I was unimpressed.

Almost perfect replication!

Being a Chicago native, it's difficult to find a close contender. This is very close with its own spin. The crust is delicious but not quite thick enough. The sauce is excellent. The twist is a lot of cheese which is very very good, I would suggest a bit more tomato and spice on top of the cheese. I will visit again next time I'm up visiting my kids.

Chicago style pizza

We stopped by for a slice or two during a Last Thursday. It was so delicious, we decided to have dinner here the next night. We ordered the meaty pie, but then noticed the notice at the bottom of the menu that each pizza takes about 30min to be ready. So we walked around Alberta for 15 minutes and came back to Via Chicago to wait for our pizza. And waited. It took well over 40 min. Finally, the pie landed on our table. It was heavy, full of meaty toppings with spicy peppers and generously sauced. I'm not sure if the bottom crust is supposed to be soggy from the toppings or crispy. Anyway, the crust on this pizza is the most delicious part, IMO. I guess, if we were to order a whole pie there again, we'd call ahead and give it 40-50min so we wouldn't have to wait so long in hunger. Or, order slices, which are available immediately and in different toppings. It seems that a slice would satisfy a normal sized appetite.

unlike any pizza you have ever had

I had the artichoke pesto pizza. The sauce was extremely flavorful and the amount was perfectly balanced with the cheese. It was not the usual mozarella cheese you get from ordinary pizzas. Maybe it was ricotta? very light and delicious. and the crust! good back on the outside and soft on the inside. usually people leave the crusts, they don't eat them. everybody ate the crust off these Chicago deep dish pizzas!! If you want to try a new approach to pizza I highly recommend Via Chicago. We'll be back!

Portland Pizza Week 2019!

By Sam DeLiso |

Next up on my Portland Pizza Week adventure, stop #7 at Via Chicago, only blocks away and swiftly moving us forward into the following phase of fantastic flavors. What we had here was a spinach & artichoke dip deep dish pie and it was absolutely amazing! Preemptively ordered an extra slice after the 10 minute well-worth-it wait (the longest I'd experienced during pizza week thus far) and did not regret it. They were gone mere minutes after being plated. The savory layers of this pie and robust sauce made for an incredible visit. If I want a deep dish pizza that reminds me of my roots in Chicago, this is where I'll go! So good! Thanks! Best, ~S DeLiso Did It "Honest Reviews of Real Places" @delisodidit (IG, FB, YouTube)

Most authentic...

...place to go for stuffed pizza in Oregon. I am from Chicago, so I know what a good stuffed pizza tastes like. We are lucky to have Via Chicago because it is the only place I know of in Oregon that can make a decent, stuffed, Chicago-like pizza! 🍕

Saturday night

By John B |

Tried Via Chicago on a Saturday night. It wasn't very busy. The pizza was good however it took a while to cook seemed like it took forever. We ordered the meaty pizza and the artichoke and cheese pizza. Both very tasty, we gladly go back however I think we will call ahead and order

Real Chicago style pizza

By Evan E |

Ok, so I was skeptical about trying my beloved Chicago style pizza out west. I mean, most of the regional specialties attempting to be recreated out here- flop. But this pizza is the real deal! I used to live in Chicago and I was not disappointed:) I highly recommend Via Chicago. You can buy it by the slice or pie. The rest of the menu looked good, too. I will be back before the summer is out!

Great Pizza, Great Service

By Katie M |

Ignore the grumbly-pants reviewers who are judging this in relation to their memories of pizza at some of the unique Chicago pizza places! Our Chicago family loves this place. The crust was crumbly and buttery and the sauce was fresh and tomatoey. It's not Chicago, but it's a really good alternative, better than anything else we've had outside Chicagoland.

Deep Dish Pizza on Portland's popular Alberta Street

By Bobby R |

Three of us split a Caesar's salad and an 8" pizza. It was plenty of food, knowing we were saving room for dessert. The restaurant is on the popular Alberta Street. The server was friendly. It took awhile to get the food, especially the pizza, but we were not in a hurry.

Great hidden gem and better than Giordano’s/Gino’s!

By Jill H |

We live in Minnesota and our daughter goes to college in Chicago. We are pretty well versed in Chicago style pizza. We loved this pizza! I think mainly because it isn’t as full of tomato chunks and tomato sauce as other Chicago pizzas seem to be. Also, the ambiance is wonderful right on Alberta street - we sat half in/half outside, had a glass of wine/beer and really enjoyed it.

Denizens of Chicago review Chicago style pizza

By Sc0ttR_J |

We recently moved out to the Pacific Northwest from Chicago where we were born. I'm 63. We have eaten Chicago deep dish style pizza in Chicago since it was developed. We uses our standard Edoardo's Chicago style deep dish pizza. The restaurants are now closed but they had the quintessential style of Chicago deep dish pizza. Via Chicago comes really really close. The neighborhood that the restaurant resides in looks like wicker park in Chicago. Lots of small shops lots of small restaurants, A really neat neighborhood in the old-style. We ordered the stuffed spinach pizza, which to my mind, is the definition of Chicago style pizza. If we go to a Chicago style pizza restaurant and it does not have stuffed spinach we get up and walk out. There's is almost 97% up to Edoardo stuff spinach standards. Lots and I repeat lots of fresh spinach in the pie. We like this place.

Good representation...

Chicago Style PIzza in Oregon... They are close. Pros: Feel of the Midwest in the Pacific Northwest. It is a pro Pretty good pizza Variety of drinks - local brews to non-local Euchre ... c'mon... gotta be a pro Cons: Not exactly Chicago but close So honestly I was walking down Alberta just soaking it all in and saw a sign for Euchre night on Monday. It was a Wednesday but I went in to look around. Yes, they have memorabilia for Chicago and the Midwest. They have deepdish pizza and I was hungry. The Pizza is good but not as good as Giordanos. It is a reheat by the slice and so with deep dish you gotta heat it. The pizza was luke-warm in the center. You can get your drinks from the cooler and there is a vast variety of beers, sodas, etc. The service was great and they are friendly. I was informed the euchre night is crowded and why not... euchre is awesome. Like all things in OR the cost was over $14 for a slice and drink. Add tip and it goes higher. NOTE: My drink was a Porter from Maui Brewing Co our of Hawaii. I know not Midwest but like many mid westerners we wish to head tropical in the Winter so.... just represent'n I enjoyed my visit and wouldn't mind returning to play some euchre if I am ever in the area. Just be wary of the "serious" players as they can make the game fun and a nightmare (thinking of my Great-Aunt and my Mother... ).

Led on by the Thrillist article on the window

By Steven V |

Thrillist ranked this place in the Top 11 outside of Chicago. Way to good of a review. The pizza was mediocre and didn't seem fresh, on a Saturday afternoon when you'd think they'd be doing volume. The salad was fresh and good and the outdoor patio is nice.

Good not great

We love Chicago style pizza and Via was really good. I didn't love the crust but my hubby did. It was served hot and super cheesy which it a bonus.

Really bad pizza

By Lynne C |

We were babysitting for our granddaughter in NE on a Saturday night and wanted a quick take-out pizza. We tried two other pizza places first; one didn't answer their phone and the other had a 2+ hour wait so we decided to give Via Pizza a try. Our decision was based solely on location and availability on a busy weekend. The service was fine. The owners were polite and had our pizza ready right on time. However, the pizza itself was almost inedible. The edges of the crust were hard and almost impossible to bite into, while the inside of the crust was soggy and seemed raw in the middle. The tomato sauce was good and the toppings were generous, but the pizza was just a soggy mess. I grew up in Chicago and have had many variations of deep-dish pizza. Via Pizza has a long way to improve before they can call themselves Chicago pizza.

Awesome pizza, friendly service

By LeaSamCob |

We wandered down from salt and straw on a saturday night. The smell was unbelievable!!! Family friendly, good selection of beers both on tap and in bottles, small bar and wine too! The pizza was great, and each of our 9 year olds only needed one piece to be super full. The server was friendly and knowlegeable, helping us decide on a pie to satisfy every taste. The also have gluten free and vegan options.

Good Chicago-style pizza

By 30POP |

The dining area inside is a little rustic and the pizza is good. It just takes a little longer to get a pizza cooked. You can get it by the slice which is supposed to be faster, but for us, it wasn't. Friendly staff.

Good pizza

By Tonypose |

Fresh salads and good but not great pizza served here deep dish style. Ambience is open street casual and service is friendly but slow. They do have a bar and lots of different beers.

Stopped in for a quick a slice

By tleeEvans |

Stopped in for a quick a slice of pizza one evening. I got the vegetarian pizza and my husband got a pepperoni the slices are very large the crust very crisp had a very good taste toppings were adequate. During this Covid pandemic we did eat outside on a picnic table. restaurant area is very small inside so eating outside would be a better option even not during this pandemic. Have several selection of bottles beer as well. Can get salads and sandwiches. Would eat there again

Great place

Super friendly owners and staff. Huge salads and yummy stuffed pizza. Decent beer options in the cooler. Stop by every other Monday for a Euchre night!

Very good

We think this is the best deep dish pizza in Portland. We recently had two pizzas delivered via Caviar and the pizza arrived hot and fresh.

Delicious and deep

By DebbieonDawson |

There are lots of interesting places to eat in the Alberta district and lots of people on a Sunday afternoon. We had gone to taste Salt and Straw ice cream but realized we wanted something not-sweet afterward. This sounded good and we were not disappointed. They make each pie individually by hand when you order so it took 30 minutes. But they gave nice service and kept our water glasses full so we didn’t mind The pizza when it arrived was 2-3 inches thick, juicy and delicious. It tasted like the chef had made it with good concern for the right herbs and textures. It had tons of cheese that stretched for more than a foot when you pulled a piece out. Really the a great, very deep Chicago pizza experience. The kind of neighborhood place I hope succeeds long term so we can keep going back!

Cozy stop with great food

By Michelle C |

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience here. Its normally hard to find pizza places that have regular, vegan and gluten free options. That are all delicious. Very small restaurant with homey feel and great pizza. Don't go if you want fancy . Real food home cooked by real friendly people.
