Excellent traditional Italian

By TheTravler77 |

Visiting Chicago for the first time. I was craving traditional Veal Parm. There were several restaurants to from and I was on the phone making reservations for another restaurant when I stumbled upon this place. It's quaint with a old school NY Italian atmosphere in the middle of a quiet neighborhood. Definitely a sleeper. The food was amazing!! I am a hard critic on food and even more on Italian food being the women in my family are Italian and amazing cooks. I couldn't have asked for anything more. The waiter was fun, full of life, and on top of it. The owner came over to the table several times to check on us. He was a hoot. We asked for the check and the waiter told us he needed to bring us dessert first. It was on the house. Quite possibly the best cheesecake I've ever had in my life.

A classic Italian restaurant in the US which owns very few things of Italy other than its name and some references on the menu. Prices are average and the service is rather fast.

A piece of Italy in downtown Chicago.

By Buck S |

Nice local Italian place near United Center. We came as a large party of 12, and the staff was very friendly and service was excellent. Nico was a great waiter that demonstrated a real passion for the food. The meatball salad cannot be missed. We ordered a mix of pasta, steak and pork dishes, and they were all excellent. The meal was capped off by their excellent Tiramisu.

Top notch Italian

By BDAD68 |

Second trip to Viaggio. If it were closer we’d go more often. The food is just plain awesome. Every single item on the table was outstanding. I had lasagna this time and it was outstanding. Our server, Gerard (I think) took excellent care of us. I love this place. The owner is a character and always keeping an eye peeled for anything that needs attention. Quickly becoming one of my favorites.

Just what we needed

By Tevsen |

Having just arrived in Chicago following 50+ hours on Amtrak from San Francisco we needed food you could identify and that had taste. We got that here big time. Sadly we all had colds so our taste buds were not functioning at full power but the food overcame this to a reasonable degree - good service, good food and a good bar, what more could you want

Wonderful Italian Dinner

By MJE2013_13 |

Found this place online while searching Italian restaurants in the Chicago area for a recent weekend visit. Our party of 5 were seated immediately upon our arrival at our reservation time. We had a great round table for easy conversation and sharing. The bread and marinated peppers that were placed on the table were delicious. The food was excellent from appetizers to dessert. Reasonably priced, and nice wine list. Our server was very attentive and friendly, but not obtrusive. Will definitely recommend, and hope to return again next time we are in town.

Upscale neighborhood Italian cuisine

By Allen21096 |

The only bad thing about this restaurant is the parking in the immediate area. Once inside though, the food is very good. We had the filet mignon which was done perfectly and we also had the lasagna. The garlic mashed potatoes with the filet were excellent. If you like risotto, they always seem to have different ones for specials. Service was great.

Our New Favorite Italian Restaurant!

By Linda K |

This was our first visit. The food and service was outstanding. From cocktails and wine to dinner and dessert we were so happy. We started with wine and cocktails. Then moved to appetizers of bruschetta and mozzarella marinara. Generous portions and delicious. Entrees included chicken parm with creamy tortellini. The tortellini were soft pillows of pasta that melted in your mouth. Another was lobster ravioli. These extra large ravioli were stuffed with yummy lobster and cradled in delicious cream sauce. The veal Marsala, also a generous portion, made my husband happy. The veal was tender and succulent smothered in a flavorful Marsala wine sauce. Finally the rigatoni aka vodka sauce was so rich and beautiful. Perfectly done. Desserts ordered included coconut cake, my husbands favorite. And it was rich and moist. The tiramisu was perfectly balanced with cream, custard, lady fingers and a coffee liquor. Last but not least was Italian ice cream rolled into a ball and covered in a shell of decadent chocolate. Cappuccino capped off this satisfying and fun dinner. We have a new favorite Italian restaurant in Chicago!

Has it all..food, ambiance and service!

We went Viaggio this past weekend for a birthday celebration. It was our first time and we fell in love with this place. It reminds you of being in a restaurant in Rome. The food was authentic and outstanding. Service was exceptional. The vibe of the place exudes family and fun. We will be back on a regular basis.

This is a warm & friendly atmosphere with a very friendly ownership. The meatball salad is not to be missed. Although a bit soft, the taste is excellent. Great menu and if you don't see it, just ask.

Superb meal during COVID-19

By brmusicman |

As Chicago has relaxed restrictions during COVID-19 and enabled outdoor dining, we visited Viaggio for dinner on a weeknight. They did a lovely job! We left commenting that the Viaggio experience had been far better than a well-known Chicago establishment we'd visited the week prior. Tables were well-spaced down Madison St.; we were not close to other guests. All staff were in masks consistently. Tables were cleared and linens replaced in-between each guest. I felt reassured they were following all guidelines. It was very nice to see white tableclothes, etc. used for outdoor dining; this added a touch of class not seen at other establishments offering outdoor dining. Our serve was also up to the same standard Viaggio offered previously; our server was attentive throughout the meal. Our food was excellent! Chicken Milanese was perfectly thin, with crispy breading and a wonderful arugula salad. And the pasta was delicious--just the right firmness, with a tomato sauce that had a bright, fresh flavor. A really nice meal; we will definitely return!

Exceptional dining!

By derekhendrickson |

My wife and I dined at Viaggio based on other reviews and it's close proximity to the United Center. The food was excellent and came out piping hot very soon after we ordered! The bar and wait staff went above and beyond to be accommodating to us! The complimentary bread is served with a pepper tapenade unlike anything I've tasted. And the after-dinner complimentary limoncello was superb. We would definitely dine there again!

good choice for business dinner

By islandvisitorChicago |

Great food and service for a business dinner with out of town guests. love the meatball salad and egg plant stack good wine selection we were shushed by the manager but did enjoy our dinners

Very tasty meal

By TBSMKS |

We went to this restaurant before the Josh Groban Concert at the United Center. Its a convenient restaurant to go if you are going to the United Center (they ARE open on Sundays when the United Center is open). The waiter was very friendly and knowledgeable about both the entrees and wine. We started with the eggplant stack as an appetizer - it was very tasty and a large enough portion for the 4 of us to share.Three of us had the chilean sea bass special as an entre - it was supposed to be served with polenta but we requested a pasta. It was delicious - but expensive ($35or$36pp). Our friend had a simple pasta custom made to his liking - they were happy to accomodate. My husband and I shared the creme brulee cheesecake for dessert - it was a little taste treat. If we are in the west loop I would definitely come back to this restaurant.

Great meal before a Blackhawks Game

By deliveryman |

My friend and I wanted a good meal before going to the Blackhawks vs Sharks game on 2/22/13. We wanted a nice restaurant but one that wouldn't mind us wearing "Blackhawks" clothing. We didn't want to rush nor did we want to pay alot and Viaggio Restaurant was PERFECT. We hit it right at 5pm (puck was dropping at 7:35) and it was timed perfectly. We walked right in and was immediately sat. I ordered the lasagne while my friend had a steak. The service was excellent, the food great and the doorman/greeter was very personable. By the time we were midway through our meal the place was hoppin'. So we were glad we got there at the time that we did. I will definately be going back before the next Blackhawks game I get to attend.

A meal to remember!

By Leigh K |

We had an early dinner at Viaggio last Sunday following my son's graduation from law school. We picked it primarily because of the restaurants close proximity to the graduation venue......but are so glad we did pick it. From the moment we walked in we felt special because the maitre d' knew we were there for a graduation celebration (I mentioned this when I made the reservation and requested a quiet corner table) We had a perfect table for six in the back of the restaurant. The food was wonderful, wine perfect, Our server's recommendations were spot on. At the end of the meal she brought Limoncello shots for us all. And, as we were leaving, since it was Mother's Day as well.....I was presented with a beautiful red rose!!! I will certainly go back. You should try it.

Great, if you reserve in advance!

By K C |

This place has huge portions, great food, & good service. Prices are what you'd expect for any good Italian Chicago restaurant (very reasonable in my estimation). The proximity to The United Center makes it ideal for a pre-venue dinner, but you MUST call at least 4-5 days in advance, especially on a busy night (ie Blackhawks games, valentine's day, etc). The staff are friendly and they try to always get you your food piping hot. The meatball salad, & pork with Sunday gravy are a must try. You won't be disappointed. Remember portions are Big! They also have awesome valet service for 12$ if you are so inclined to make the mile walk to The United Center. Not bad to pick up your car, on way out either.

Authentic Italian

Meatball salad - could have had it for appy, entree and dessert. Great place - felt like I was back in Brooklyn. Service was top of the line.

The best kept secret in Chicago

By Mike |

This is the best kept secret in Chicago. Everything outstanding! The red sauce is to die for. Ask for Marco. A real professional waiter that knows the menu backwards and forwards.

Such a disappointment

By TraumaNursin |

I came across some great reviews for this restaurant, but was sadly disappointed. The food was mediocre. I had the mozzarella appetizer and eggplant parmesan. The noise level was high with hockey games on the TV. I thought it was going to be quiet and intimate.

nice place to eat b4 united centre event

By harr0w_traveler |

My wife and I were on our way to see a concert at the united center and made a reservation for 5 pm at Viaggio. We took the 20 bus down Madison from State street and arrived around 10 to 5 and we were seated right away. I had the new york steak, and my wife had the chicken milanese. Both of us really enjoyed our choices, and found the portions to be generous in size. I had a cocktail, the italian stallion, which was extremely tasty, and my wife had a glass of wine. The service was excellent, our glasses of water were never empty, and when we were finished with a dish it was picked up promptly. All around a good choice just b4 going to the united centre....check it out.

Over The Top!

By JimParkRidge_IL |

This is one of the very best restaurants at which I have ever eaten, period! The service, wine list and cuisine are exceptional. I cannot rave enough about our excellent meal there. You have to give this place a try.

Vodka sauce is wonderful !

By Laurie S |

Italian charm with authentic dishes. We started with the mussels and ended with the vodka cream on penne !! I took half in a Togo then ate the rest in bed at our Hotel. The next morning I wanted more. Great atmosphere and lots of choices to experience a wonderful Italian dinner! Makes me love Chicago more!!!!

Sunday Pork Gravy is an absolute must!!!

By edandlisak2015 |

Baked clams and bruschetta are great before a game but don't leave without enjoying a plate of rigatoni with Sunday pork gravy. As good as if not better than Nonna's!! Chunks of tender pork falling off the bone in a perfectly spiced gravy with a refreshing dollop of burrata in the middle of your plate. Worth driving into the city for!!!

Liked the service and atmosphere

By gondekp |

We were going to Chicago theater for a late show after scoring same tickets. We were looking for dinner a many places were all booked at popular dinner times. I found Viaggio after some online research and it was available. We arrived around 7:30 on Saturday and were promptly seated. We really liked our server. Knowledge, polite, and a fun attitude. The atmosphere was also good. Lively and loud on a Saturday night. The restaurant isn’t all that large and had a pretty long bar area. We brought a bottle of wine with us. I had called ahead and the corkage was a very reasonable $20. We started with the eggplant stack. Fried eggplant slices with tomato, mozzarella, arugula, and balsamic. This was pretty good. I little messy to eat and likely better when tomatoes are in season. I had the rigatoni with pork Sunday gravy ragu and my wife the rigatoni with vodka sauce. Both entrees were good by I wouldn’t go beyond that. The food come out just a couple minutes after ordering. My pasta seemed over cooked. The pork was very tender but the sauce overall was again good but that was about it. I wanted to give 4 out of 5 but just couldn’t go that night. 3.5 would probably be more representative. There are it of really good spots in the West Loop and we’ll try those next.

Great food and staff

By lterry913 |

Great food, wonderful staff, great atmosphere, quick service. My plate was huge! Easily 3 meals. It was pricy, but for 3 meals it wasn’t bad.

new added location in Lincoln Park, terrible

By disabledbutactive |

Restaurant didn't make a good transition to an added location at 401 W. Fullerton: cramped, especially in outdoor dining, food you wouldn't cross the street to eat.

The food, the service & the surroundings will bring you back again and again

By Steve B |

When you drive up it has an old world appeal. We were immediately made comfortable by the host. Our server had an Italian accent and was able to make tremendous recommendations. We started with a bottle of some great Italian wine and a very good calamari along with some warm bread. My wife had a fantastic traditional Italian pasta dish and I was lucky they had Bronzinni (Italian sea bass) on the menu. It was awesome. We really enjoyed the atmosphere as we ate. It just made everything a little bit better. We finished with cannoli and tiramisu. Oh so good. We tell all our friends who are going to Chicago about this place. Make sure you go! By the way, we tried their other location near Lincoln Park and found it to be equally agreeable.

DINNER FANTASTICO

By Raphael L |

We had a family dinner with our kids that was totally Fantistico. Great oversight by DAVE F and great service from Nicolas. We started with the eggplant as an appetizer and followed with cheese ravioli, riggatoni ala vodka, mussels and brick chicken . All entrees were thoroughly enjoyed and followed by to die for key lime pie and banana creme pie. I don’t care where you live but this is worth the trip. Bon Apetit!

GREAT NIGHT AT VIAGGIO

By Karen |

Friends weekend in Chicago and Viaggio (W Madison St) did not disappoint! Loved the atmosphere - cozy and classic. Service was very good and all the food was great - good size portions. Someone (who I believe was the owner), stopped by our table to ask if we were enjoying our meal and if we needed anything - class act! Would definitely go back next time I'm in Chicago again.

The food was the best we had our whole trip!

By ablakeley098 |

This was recommended to us by a friend that lived in Chicago and the Concierge at the Fairmont. So since we got two recommendations we decided to try it. It was a short cab ride about $9. Very cute place and the employees were very welcoming. There were only two of us to we sat at the bar. We had drinks and dinner and our bill was about $80.00. Not bad. The food was out of this world good! Next time we are in Chicago we will be going back!

Amazing Italian food

By nikki s |

I have been to many Italian restaurants and most do not have good food. The ones that do are so rare that I would typically award them five stars. However, after having the food at this restaurant I would go back and give each, one less star. None of them compare to this place, as the food here is just simply amazing. Every single thing we got was excellent, down to my daughter's cheese ravioli. My husband had the Chilean sea bass linguini special which was delicious and I had the rigatoni with Sunday pork sauce which was so tasty. Their meatballs are excellent as is their sausage. I only wish that was a touch spicier. Not to mention this place is not expensive in the least. It is just simply phenomenal.

Chicago's most underrated Italian restaurant?

By Taylor B |

Chicago is a town of culinary riches, filled with irresistible Italian restaurants, steakhouses and pizza parlors. Which is the best Italian restaurant of all? For some unexplainable reason, Viaggio isn't included on most top 10 lists. But it should be. Therefore, it is the most underrated Italian restaurant in the city. Located at 1330 West Madison Street, in the bustling Near West Loop area, near the United Center, Viaggio offers upscale Italian/American cuisine in a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere designed for celebrating birthdays or anniversaries or Blackhawks Stanley Cups or Bulls victories. For dinner, we started with fresh tomato bruschetta and Caesar salad and sausage and peppers. The list of entrees was challenging with so many tempting options, including spaghetti marinara, penne bolognese, lasagna, pork chop parmesan, pork chop Vesuvio, shrimp scampi, an eight-ounce filet mignon and a 16-ounce New York strip. My wife and I finally settled on veal scallopini and a 10-ounce broiled white fish. You can't get good veal at many restaurants so when you can, don't pass it up. Viaggio's veal is top notch. And white fish? Well, if you're on a more fish/less meat diet, white fish is top of the line. For dessert, we shared a plate of tiramisu (do you order anything else at an Italian restaurant?) and lemon cake. Friends said Viaggio's lemon cake is unmatched. They were right. It all adds up to an Italian restaurant that deserves more props.

Italian voyage

By MelissaWP |

We had tickets to see a comedian nearby at the City Winery so we made reservations to eat dinner here beforehand. We were sat somewhat close to the front door, so unfortunately the draft from the door when guests walked in every 5 minutes was unpleasant to the point I had to wear my coat over my shoulders during the entire meal experience. Only just before we left did I finally feel the heat kick on from a vent above us on the ceiling. The tables were also a bit close together, but I guess that's understandable as the place is not very big. It also got a bit loud at times while some men were watching horse racing at the bar and one man decided it was acceptable to yell out loud at various times. Their website advertises they serve traditional Italian cuisine, to which we mostly agree. We ordered fried calamari as an appetizer, which was served with something that tasted like shrimp cocktail sauce or spicy ketchup (which normally goes with shrimp) rather than the typical basic marinara sauce we're used to. I ordered the filet mignon with garlic mashed potatoes served in a red wine reduction, which was pretty good. My husband ordered the veal marsala, which was delicious. We each ordered a dessert too; me the double chocolate gelato which just tasted like plain chocolate ice cream but was yummy and him the cannolis which he said were the best he's had in years. The waitstaff was outstanding and very efficient, always there to check on drink refills, take plates away, or ask if we wanted anything else.

game over, man

By dominicandandy35805 |

went to viaggio with friends friday night. none of us had ever been there before. we all will be going back. this might have been the best meal i've had in the last year. there are hundreds of italian restaurants in chicago, and many are pretty damn good, but i gotta say, this place really stood out. the calamari and bruschetta appetizers were simply awesome. our waiter was a real pro, which makes a huge difference. all pasta dishes were well received, but my veal marsala was the real deal. the desserts and excellent sangiovese rounded out the experience. bravo!

The Italian journey !

Do you need food for the next couple of days?

By Cubsfan4 |

Overall - We were there with friends and received the recommendation to go there by a couple sitting near us at lunch earlier that day - they were right - we enjoyed it a lot! Food - the food was fantastic. I have eaten at quite a few other Italian restaurants in the city and the food here was tasty, fresh, and better than most. The bartender was great and while waiting for our table he suggested the eggplant stack (incredible) and the zucchini blossom special (also fantastic). We split that amongst 4 people and it was more than enough. Plus they bring you these great roasted peppers with your bread - I could have just eaten those and been happy. For dinner, we had 4 different pasta dishes - which they also brought us small plates to let everyone steal from everyone else. Even with that - the portions are huge and I could have taken mine home for at least 2 more meals... (hence the title of this post) Service - this was the only challenge. The team at the door to greet you and the bar staff were fantastic and made us feel at home and they seemed appreciative of our business. All was well until our waiter spent more time talking to friends then making sure everything was going well with our meal. 3 tables came in after and received their food before we did - we think he forgot to put in our orders... I think if we would have had another waiter (and one that was not wrapped up into himself) then the meal would have been perfect. I will not dock the score based on that one visit, but would hope service is better the 2nd time around.

Great Meal at the new Location in Lincoln Park

By rjander |

I have eaten at the Madison location several times and had a great meal each time. For Restaurant week, my wife and I went to the Lincloln Park Location to try it out. We had a great meal and a great time. The manager, Dave, actually stopped by our table twice; once to see if we were happy with the table and again to see how we enjoyed the meal. The service was friendly and efficient. We strayed from the restaurant week menu (four courses for $33.00 - a great value!) to add the Oysters Rockefeller as an appetizer. We had it at the Madison Street location as a special before and loved it. We loved it again and would like to lobby for a permanent place for it on the menu! It is the best we have ever had; too good to just be a special! The rest of the meal was wonderfull, as well. the meatball salad, the sausage and peppers and the Veal Marsala were excellent. Dave and the rest of his staff were so nice to us we felt like family. This was a great meal and we will be back!

Lunch with a good friend

By Chicagojoe3 |

I have never been disappointed with a meal here yet. I usually go in for lunch and Matt is always our server and he is really good and right on top of things. I happen to leave my wallet on the table and he running down the street to return it to me. Thanks again Matt.

Consistently great food

By myra60607 |

We have been to this restaurant many times, we absolutely love it. The food is always great, the specials are really particularly tasty, but each item is just so great. I love the appetizers, the shrimp with the lemon-y sauce, is just as good as the sausages ... They have these tiny tortellini they use as side for some of the dishes, that you could order and have them as a main dish, so good. Last time we were there with our baby, and they treat him just as great , got a great space for us , and were

Amazing Food Great Atmosphere

By Mari |

This restaurant not only serves delicious authentic Italian cuisine but the ambiance and service are impeccable. Dave who is one of the owners and manages the restaurant will always greet you with a huge smile and treat you like family. I have eaten at both Viaggios and both impressed me. There is also one in Highland Park, The one cool thing they both have in common besides the delicious food, is how great the staff is at treating you like family. On my visit to the Chicago restaurant, I had Lauren as my service. She is a bubble, sweet, and her service is perfect. She was also impressively knowledgeable about the wines and all the food on the menu.

Plenty of Satisfaction

By Ann F |

I made last minute reservations for our party of eight before The Stones at the United Center; Viaggio was very accommodating and squeezed us in. Lively crowd, lovely room with windows opened to a beautiful night. We had two bottles of reliable, well-priced wine and ordered the specials. Burrata mozzarella was great, followed by huge portions of pasta, piping hot and delicious. Service was prompt and attentive - and our server really knew his stuff. A perfect choice before an event, but we'll be back even if we don't have anyplace to go afterwards.

Treat Yourself

By Miami1982 |

We were in Chicago for a Blackhawks game. Viaggio was recommended so we decided to give it a try. Started with meatballs for an appetizer and they were excellent. My wife had the seabass special and I had the homemade cavatelli. The waitress suggested I add crumbled sausage. A fantastic choice. The portions were large, the service was very good.

Dinner before a play at the Goodman

By Lisa W |

Excellent service and food. Decorated for the holidays which added to the already nice atmosphere. I had the filet mignon and mashed potatoes. Husband had the bolognese. My friend ate an entire plate of bruschetta herself; I’m gluten free, but if I could, I would’ve joined her it looked delicious!!

Chicago Italian

By Cinti attorney |

Excelllent food, particularly the pastas; a waiter who came out of central casting in all black and with attitude, but who took great care of us, even advising us to cut back our order due to the large portions. And they were both huge and utterly delicious!

Yum! Nicely done in all ways.

By PuffyP |

This place has character in its ambiance, food, and staff. Our food was delicious, service impeccable, ambiance nice, and the tiramisu was the best we've ever had. Highly recommend!

The Place Didn't Enhance my Birthday Celebration

By L D |

I was so excited when I spotted this place on my way to a Big Ten game at the United Center. I thought it would be a great place to celebrate my birthday. I called two weeks in advance for a reservation and was told we would have a beautiful table. When we arrived the host was frazzled and less than pleasant - the place was crowded due the early crowd that was headed to a concert at United Center. We were forced to sit down immediately before the majority of our party arrived. Imagine my horror when they showed us a table facing the kitchen and basically on top of the parties around us. Literally there was no room to even pull the chairs out or for the servers to pass. The waiter tried to tell us we had to sit in folding chairs YEAH RIGHT!!! While the food was above par, the service was average and less than attentive. Don't restaurants know you need more than 1 waiter for a party of 10. They managed to damage my birthday cake (it looked like the leaning tower of Pisa when it was served) and provided absolutely no apology. While I had high hopes for this place - I don't think I would go back or recommend. When I go out to celebrate I want good, attentive service and I don't want to be rushed.

Italian pleasure

By travel4pleasure2015 |

We enjoyed this restaurant very much. As other reviews recommended we tried the meatball salad and it was very good. I had the Primavera and watch out although very good it is super rich and heavy. Couldn't eat it all but we shared a Spumoni Bomba and it was very good. My dinner companions liked their food as well. The wine was good and the wait staff attentive. Be careful to ask the price of the wine if they suggest one as it can be pricey. We didn't have any trouble finding parking on the street on a Tuesday night. I would recommend this restaurant.

Delicious!!!!!!! Great atmosphere

By TheTravler77 |

In visiting Chicago for the first time we found this sleeper. The staff was amazing. Funny, attentive, and talkative. The food was even better. Everything we had was sensational. I had the pounded pork chop parmigiana, which I’ve never seen that combo before. It was superb. Can’t wait to go back and eat there again.

Gerardo is the man!

By BDAD68 |

My brother in law lives nearby and he had been but we had not. So we did last night. Met the owner smoking a cigar outside. Seemed genuinely friendly. Then Gerardo took over. The man has definite people skills. Always a smile, always attentive, and his advice when asked, was spot on. Between the three of us we had a variety of entrees as well as a few appetizers. They bring a little plate of peppers. Delish!! All of it was outstanding. Nothing was bad. I look forward to trying out more things. Thanks Viaggio and Gerardo for a wonderful dining experience last night.

Nick's the man

By ninelivesnine |

The restauarant is one of our favorites of all time. Great food, wine and the service is the best because Nick is the best. He welcomes you and makes you feel like your family every time were there. Oh by the way, there super close to the United Center when you want to see the Bulls play. Jer

Customer oriented, trusting, and patient.

By Richard P |

Unusual perhaps, but I can only write about the service, not the food or the ambiance which others have complimented highly. In February I ordered a $200 gift card to be sent to me in Michigan, which I wanted to give to someone who lives in Chicago not far from Viaggio. Weeks went by, and it never arrived. I called, and was assured it had been mailed. More weeks passed. When I called again, David offered to send another, but this time by UPS, taking it to the UPS Store personally and not USPS, trusting I'd destroy a second card, if it ever showed up. Guess what? They both arrived on March 15. Viaggio can't be held responsible for the slow mail, and David is to be thanked for sending a second card no charge. Will look forward to hearing about my gift recipient's experience.

Great Italian Food

They have a pretty varied menu of Italian food I would not normally have tried but it was superbly cooked.

Vibrant fun, good Italian food. Service was excellent, honored our reservation in a timely fashion and the food was very traditional Italian cooking. Very well done but nothing out of the ordinary. Cocktails were well done everyone was delicious

West Loop family style Italian at its finest

By Shelliu |

We have always sat in the dining room at Viaggio but this time we ordered. I was pleasantly surprised that my favorites including the brick chicken (super juicy and flavorful) and meatball salad were as good as if we just got them from the kitchen. My husband got the filet and it was also well cooked and rested. Viaggio is a staple in West Loop for amazing Italian and perfect before game day at United Center. I would recommend it to anyone visiting and locals that haven’t yet experienced this true gem.

Great!

By scastell2018 |

Shared a meatball salad as an appetizer. Great flavor on the meatballs. Numerous in our party were very happy with all the pasta dishes. Drinks were good with a very nice poor. Wait staff was friendly and attentive. Great place for Italian!

Excellent food and service.

By Philwino |

Excellent food and service. Don't miss the meatball salad. We were with friends, their adult children and their grandchild, who's until 1. They made perfect accommodation for the child, opened our wine (corkage allowed), and everything flowed smoothly from there.

Worth a second visit

By aender |

Had a very nice dinner at Viaggio. The breaded mozzarella was excellent and recommend adding some balsamic to enhance the flavor. Linguine with clams was also very good along with the penne with bolognese. We also had the lasagna, which was large enough for two meals the following day. Service was good, but not what I’d call great, but we’ll still go back for a second helping.

Authentic Italian Gem

By Bonnie G |

This restaurant offers outstanding Italian cuisine with fresh, high-quality ingredients. The pasta was exceptional. Great wine selection and warm, attentive service make it a must-visit spot for Italian food lovers!

Amazing food and atmosphere

By LM |

My husband and I had an AMAZING dinner last night at Viaggio. We have been to most Italian Restaurants around the West Loop. Including the famous one down the road. Viaggio's food is by far the best Italian food we've had. The portions are huge and the service is outstanding! We will, for sure, become regulars of this West Loop gem!

Great Italian food with a cosy neighborhood feel

The food here is sooooooo good. I had the Veal West Loop, which had spinach and cheese sauce that was so tasty. The portions are large, as they are in Italian "family" restaurants. We also enjoyed the sausage and pepper appetizer with thinly sliced bread rounds. The service is excellent, and everyone seemed genuinely interested in our having a great dining experience. The restaurant is unpretentious - tables in the same room as the bar - and that gives it the "friendly neighborhood place" feeling. If you like great Italian food and lots of it in an informal and friendly cafe this is the place for you. We will definitely be back.

Excellent italian in the west loop

By Mike M |

OK, I am 54. Kids are grown and on their own, we can go out for dinner and really enjoy the menu without being concerned with the prices. This was our second visit to Viaggio and we will continue to return. The service is perfect. On our first visit Matt, the main man on the floor, came outside and pulled us in. He promised the best italian food in the city and I must admit it is the best I have had the chance to enjoy. The special was beef short ribs with polenta. Excellent! The previous visit I had rigatoni with pork and Sunday gravy. Incredible! On Thursdays you can bring your own wine and the opening is free. Bottom line, Food quality-perfect. Service - perfect. Value - you get what you pay for-perfect. Dinner for 5, no booze, we brought our own, healthy tip. $ 230.00. If you want great, real, italian food in the west loop, go to Viaggio.

Spectacular Meal! What a great restaurant.

By Manzanitabay |

Everything was great at this special restaurant. The kids loved the generous portions of pasta. Our waiter steered us to excellent menu choices and an outstanding meal was had by all.

I used to love this restaurant! Food is good, Service is awful!

By LisaJ19 |

I have been to this restaurant several times over the last couple of years, The food is always good, very traditional. Had dinner on Friday night with another couple, it was so crowded. It appeared like they added a brunch of tables, there was no room to move. Plus its so loud, it was very difficult to carry on a conversation. The service was rushed and thoughtless. At this price point the bus boy shouldn't be delivering the food and having to ask everyone what they had.

West Loop basic Italian

By Barry B |

We came here before an event at the United center. From the outside it looks like a small storefront and inside it is large modern restaurant. Some cheesy photos of rat pack stars to add to old Italian restaurant theme. We had reservations and were seated immediately. They brought us water, bread and roasted peppers. The peppers were nice change and we all enjoyed them. The menu is basic Italian fare and the waiter told us about some of the night's specials. We ordered a bottle of wine and split an order of Bruschetta. I ordered the Fedellini Arrabiata (angel hair pasta), my partner ordered Spaghetti Carbonara and my friend ordered the Chicken Marsala. The Bruschetta was OK but we have all had better. The wine was very good. About 10 minutes later our entrees arrived and they looked great. My Arrabiata was good and nicely spiced. My partner said his Carbonara was OK, not amazing, and my friend said the Marsala was OK but sweeter then she wanted. Overall good service, decent food and nice atmosphere. It is about a 25 minutes walk to the United Center but if you drive it is close.

A real treasure!

Four of us had dinner at Viaggio's tonight. The food and the service were amazing and the prices reasonable for what you get. It is not a huge place and there are outside tables. The menu has a wide variety of Italian foods plus the daily specials. The server was very attentive. Prices reflect the quality of food, but were reasonable.

Hungry for Italian This Place is a MUST

By john01 |

Heard about this place on TV decided to give it a try on a a stay in Chicago. The food was outstanding and servings were huge.Yes you must try the Meatball Salad The owners stop by to welcome us and were most grateful for us stopping by to try there restaurant. The one waiter seemed to try and run the whole place he was busy, way to much for us maybe thats his thing. We had a great time and dinner was outstanding. We will be back for another great Itailan Feast.

Disappointing to say the least

By Vanessa D |

We were in Chicago to visit our kids and grandkids. Viaggio came recommended through friends. We had reservations and when we arrived, found ourselves seated next to the door. We asked if we could move further inside, but were told this was not possible. The waiter hydroplaned to our table the minute we sat down and took the drink order. Minutes later we had drinks and bread . The evening's specials were recited as quickly as are the possible side effects on pharma advertisements. We placed our order for dinner, starting with appetizers. We all had the feeling that this being a Saturday evening, perhaps they were trying to roll over our table quickly, especially since we had children with us. The squid ap was very good, moist and smothered in a tasty tomato sauce. The Caesar salad was acceptable, the dressing did overpower the limp lettuce. The eggplant tower was a hit with all. Before we knew it, our plates were whisked away, replaced by our entrees. We looked at each other. We had only arrived 30 minutes earlier and we now had our mains in front of us. That was when I noticed my wine glass had been cleared away. I mentioned this to our waiter who said he removed it, assuming I didn't want any more. True, there was only a small amount left and I had said I didn't want to drink too much, flying the next morning. But, I was nursing the wine, enjoying it and was not ready to give it up! The food- the fish de jour was striped bass. My husband rated it a 6. We just had fresh striped bass in Sarasota last week at a lovely restaurant called Indigenous that blew this one away, at half the price. I had West Loop chicken. I expected a chicken breast in a light sauce of spinach, mushrooms and cheese. Instead, it consisted of two heavily breaded cutlets hidden under mountains of melted cheese and tomato sauce, mixed with vegetables. It tasted like previously frozen chicken parmigiana, the kind that old Italian chain restaurants used to churn out. I ate only a mouthful. The side was a very rich gooey tortellini. This was definitely a dish of quantity over any sign of quality. The pasta with shrimp and brocollini was light and enjoyable, as was the pasta Fra Diavollo, albeit at a price tag too high for what was presented. The children's pasta, basically spaghetti and meatballs was to their liking- a heaping plate of noodles and sauce. The entire meal was completed in less than an hour. We eat more relaxing dinners at home! We ordered more drinks, just to prolong our dinner together. This was a very disappointing evening and costly at just over $400! We were 4 adults and 3 kids under 8. That put us in the compulsory 20% tip category. We would have tipped only 10%, the service was not worthy of 20%. We were rushed from the get go and this is not a fast food restaurant. I would highly suggest to the management that the pace be more relaxed. This was to be an enjoyable family dining experience. We visit our children a few times a year. For the cost of this meal, one would expect more. The food was mediocre. The service was unacceptable. When my wine glass disappeared from the table, it would have been proper to offer me a fresh glass of wine, not a clean empty one. I did place a call to the restaurant when we returned home, to understand some of the charges. We did speak about the issues our family encountered. Chris, the assistant manager, somewhat defensive at first, capitulated and asked that he be given the opportunity to discuss this with his manager next week. Perhaps a gift certificate will be forthcoming. In any case, our children, who are ardent foodies and restaurant goers, may not be willing to give this establishment a second chance. It was that disappointing.

Italian to the max!

Off the beaten path in Chicago, but don't let it fool you. As real as it gets Italian place , the service is simply awesome, the food is excellent, the experience is so worth it.

Resident or Traveler....Come and Enjoy!

By Kim H |

I love to try new places but, I often wait to review them until I have eaten there more than once. it is all about consistency. This was my third time at Viaggio and it was as wonderful as the my previous visits. Our party of four enjoyed great soup and salads to start. The Caesar was fresh and crisp with an dressing that was as authentic as I have tasted recently. It was not by design that we ordered four different entrees it was because that is where our taste buds took us. Salmon, Veal, Ravioli, and Risotto were our choices. Each of them were outstanding and none of us was disappointed. We tasted each dish and agreed they were equally and uniquely delicious. Portion size perfect so as not to feel overwhelmed by "too much food". The price point matched the quality of the food. The service was friendly, attentive and efficient. I observed the owner/manager stopped at every table at some point to check and see if everyone was enjoying their meals. The wine list was extensive but affordable and many great offerings by the glass. I cannot comment on dessert as we opted out but, from what I saw being served at nearby tables they looked every bit as good as the salads and main courses. If you live in the Chicago and the surrounding metro area and have not visited this gem in the West Loop you must try it. If you are in town for business or vacation head to the area.. and eat at Viaggio Because of restaurants like Viaggio Chicago is gaining the recognition it deserves for being an awesome "foodie" city!

Great meal and fun staff

By Roland R |

I was taken here by seasoned locals on our way to a big game at the United Center down the street. Excellent, friendly atmosphere from the time we were greeted. Superb meal; kudos to Julie for keeping us well fed, well hydrated and well entertained. Well worth a call if you are in Chicago.

Nice idea for fresh Italian

You get a card and charge it as you order around the restaurant. Food us prepared in front of you and as you want it. Pasta dish was very good.

Old-style Italian, wonderful taste, rushed service

By buddymedbery |

This is old-style Italian dining, with dishes you know by heart, but often with additions or changes to suit fresh ingredients. My wife had the veal ragu over papardelle while I had the sauteed branzino over angel hair pasta, with olives and other accompaniments. The ragu was rich and flavorful, and the papardelle retained their individual identity rather than becoming a gelatinous mess as often happens when not cooked properly. The branzino was perfectly sauteed over a bed of angel hair pasta (also cooked perfectly) with peppers and olives, and was delicious. We started with a bowl of roasted small tomatoes with a basil-infused mozzarella that was perhaps the best mozzarella I have ever tasted, including in its region of origin. The wine list is more than long enough, reasonably priced, and includes some very nice vintages. My only complaint is that the service was rushed. I felt that they wanted to get quick turnover for the table, and despite no intent to hurry on our part we were out in less than 45 minutes.

Nothing special - don't believe the hype

By DJBT |

We visited Viaggio for my wife's birthday with a total party of 8. Even though we placed a reservation we still had to wait to be seated, and then waited for another big table to finish up so we could be less cramped - but that's all ok because the weather was nice and we were having a good time outside. Once we did get seated, it was a bit of hit or miss... Our server seemed to disappear at times and was nowhere to be found. It took a good 15-20 minutes to get drinks and order something. The bread was a bit late to the table but was a welcome addition. The menu is unimpressive. It seems that there are a few dishes they make and then they vary them by the meat. The pasta selection was OK, but it seemed more tomato-sauce heavy, and many folks like creamier sauces. On the appetizers: my wife LOVED the eggplant stack. I ordered the meatball salad to split with another guest, and while it tasted good, it looked nothing like it. I was a bit off-putting, because the hot meatball with marinara was next to/on top of the fresh salad that was wilting by the second... not my thing I guess - but tasted good. The waiter finally showed up again, and described the specials one of which was Osso Buco. It sounded very delicious and I ordered it. It WAS very good, however I only later found out it was $40. As compared to other sub-$25 plates, I wish the waiter would have mentioned the price (especially because a few of us ordered it and had the sticker shock look when the bill arrived). The drinks are also unreasonably (if not obscenely) expensive - a shot of grappa was almost $20. Also, the waiter kept interrupting us every time someone would try to give a toast - that was annoying. What upset me the most was that they charged us close to $10 for a stale, red velvet cake/muffin desert for my wife's Happy Birthday song...Really Viaggio?! I would not go back here because the service was mediocre, food was average, and overall experience was VERY lacking.

Great Italian including Gluten Free

Great service, terrific food, numerous options including gluten free. Good for talking with our family members, not too noisy. Good wine options as well as cocktails.

We were a group of ten , had reservations, staff attended very well . The specials were explained beautifully. Starters , main course , desserts and wine all excellent.

Wonderful Italian Food

By MJE2013_13 |

My husband and I couldn't wait to return to this neighborhood Italian restaurant while visiting our children in Chicago! We had an 8pm reservation on a Saturday night. The place was packed and lively, we were seated immediately. Our waitress was great and attentive but not overly. The food from appetizers to dessert was fantastic. Wine list had many reasonable choices. At the end of the meal, the waitress brought each of us complimentary Limoncello, a nice surprise. Highly recommend this restaurant.

So many better choices

By msfrizbe |

This place got glowing reviews on another site. We found it below average in Chicagos fine Italian food scene. The recommended appetizer (egg plant, fried, stacked) was tasteless. The "highly recommended" Rigatoni with Pork Gravy was almost unedible.I bit into a large piece of PORK FAT on second bite. It made me fork the meal carefully, I wish I had sent it back. Tasted salty, unusual for Italian gravy. No reasonable wine by the glass or the waiter was fibbing,(10 dollars for a nothing house chianti) It is close to the United Center so I am sure this is why it was filled. Never again. So many excellent choices and we spent a small fortune for food I can make better-and I am IRISH. Go to West Loop or Greektown if you are looking for something before a game/show.

Average Food, Great Service

By CanadianAmericanGirl |

I travel a lot, often in NYC and Chicago so my expectations when it comes to Italian food (or other types of cuisine for that matter) is pretty high. It's especially high when it's recommended by the Concierge at the Fairmont Hotel. The calamari appetizer sounded way better on the menu. The batter was very thick, it was pretty chewy and the sauce only so so. My friend's orecchiette was just ok. My pappardelle with veal ragu was quite good. I wasn't "oo-ing" and "awe-ing" like I was the time I had it in Manzo in NYC but if I were to go back to Viaggio and it was on the menu I'd have it again. The portions are generous. Our server (wish I'd remember his name) was very good. His wine suggestion for our meals was spot on and he was funny, pleasant and helpful. If you're in the area of Viaggio go for it but there's much better Italian trattorias downtown.

Impromptu visit. Amazing!

By Philip M |

Passing with friends and dropped in for a quick bite, was great recommended a house special chicken (hot stone/brick?) by a really good waiter (mike?) Anyway the food was off the chart! Would put this as solid top 5 for food in Chicago.

Terrific meal with great service

By eloquentone1 |

What a lovely little place with a friendly feel. The decor could use a little help, but everyone was friendly starting with the gentleman that answered the phone when I asked if they had room. We were in route and were greeted nicely. I had the sea bass, which was outstanding. The flavors enhanced the fish and it but butter tender. It was accompanied by pumpkin ravioli. I was skeptical since I don't usually care for sweet ravioli, but it was so fresh and not too sweet. Don't miss dessert. The gelato was authentic. Thumbs up!

Great Neighborhood Establishment

By brmusicman |

Viaggio, on Madison St. in the West Loop, is a great community-focused establishment, in a part of town with a lot of restaurants that attract people from all over the city (and, in some cases, country). It's got that neighborhood charm--the same people have worked there for a long time, the customers are likely to live in the buildings nearby, etc. The atmosphere is not fancy, but it's very comfortable--even cozy. The tables are relatively close together and there's a good energy to the place. The menu offers standard Italian favorites--a nice selection of appetizers, solid salads, and a good variety of pasta, meat, and seafood mains. The food won't blow you away with its originality, but it's classic Italian food executed well--highlights have been the orecchiette with broccoli rabe, sausage, and white bean; chicken Milanese, served with an arugula salad on top with perfect acid; and sea bass. Portion sizes are HUGE; it's easy to enjoy a full meal by splitting and appetizer and an entree, especially if ordering pasta. Service can be on the relaxed side but is always very welcoming. Not a destination restaurant, but a lovely place to have dinner if you're craving a simple neighborhood spot.

Food and staff are fantastic!

By marpau1 |

We came here to celebrate our daughter's college graduation and it turned out to be the perfect spot. The graduation ran late, traffic was horrendous and I was certain we would lose our reservation. But a phone call to the restaurant reassured me it would be fine. Our daughter's friend arrived on time, was seated promptly and ordered an appetizer and drink while waiting for us to arrive. When we got there the girls had their grad caps on and everyone was congratulating them. It was so nice and memorable. Our waiter was extremely personable and treated the girls to dessert - a delicious tiramisu. The ravioli stuffed with short ribs was excellent. Rich and tender. The lasagna, pork chop Parmesan and risotto were delicious also. Order an appetizer - you won't be sorry. We had the sausage and peppers and the mozzarella sticks. Best mozzarella sticks ever. Make a reservation and go. You will not be disappointed.

Yummy!

Great table, great service, and the food was just outstanding!! Serving sizes are large, so be sure to come hungry. This is Italian food at its finest!

Date night

By ChrisJeffries |

This place is okay at most. Food is good, drinks are pricey, staff is not attentive for big groups. We were there for a party and the waitress was hard to find when we really wanted something to order.

Very good food and service!

David, Gualberto and the team here gave us a very good service and made all of our hard requests with a big smile(: Really recommend the meat here so high quality!

journey enjoyed

By Corrie G |

My first time there. Treated to surprise birthday dinner. It was very noisy because it was filled with enjoyable young adults (older ones too). There were 11 of us, originally squeezed at a make shift table for 8 (1 round table & 1 square table put together), sitting 2 of us in the pathway to the kitchen & restrooms - yuk! Told the manager this table arrangement was NOT acceptable nor enjoyable. He was up a tree because they were filled. But he did change a reservation and reseated us at a more accommodating table. Waitstaff was great about this change - we were already well into appetizers. So, finalizing .. management & staff very friendly, helpful and professional. Food was great & plentiful. Table had cheese ravioli (soft dough with plenty of fresh filling), large meatballs cooked soft & favorable, bone-in veal chop (huge), & great seafood. Group included a 4-year old who also enjoyed his meal and night out. Wonderful desserts passed around our table, given to us complimentary along with a birthday candle. Could have much better acoustics. Had to shout to talk. Definitely could not hear anyone across the table. If I am correct, Viaggio means journey... thus "a journey enjoyed".

Nice find in a sea of options

By waypointbvi |

With some thousands of options in Chicago it's hard to make a decision. This place was just right for what we wanted, great service, excellent food and a very nice wine list. Service was quick and efficient, food was tasty, veal piccata for me accompanied by a nice bottle of red wine made for a great meal.

When your in the neighborhood...

West side gem that must be experienced!

By vacations2xayear |

Excellent experience in all aspects. Food, service, wine and atmosphere. Went there for a small birthday dinner. Valet parking as well as off street parking was available. Venue was large enough to have energy, but was still conversation friendly. Server's knowledge of menu and wine was as good as any I've experienced. Very willing to accommodate. I have been to Italy 8x and the food would compare well with anything that I have had there.. Highly recommended.

A for effort ,C for execution

By Arpino71 |

Very accommodating and warm staff from the host to the waitress. Great energy and a lively crowd. Great bread to start with plenty of cheese and olive oil table side with a complimentary side of roasted peppers that was a really nice touch. The bruschetta to start was tasty and well presented but as soon and you touched it the whole thing fell apart. The sausage and peppers were slightly below average due to the dryness of the sausage. They brought out our meal half way through the apps, which was really annoying. We were at a 2 person table with little room so we had them take the apps away. Best part of the meal was my risotto of the day with mushrooms, shrimp and truffles. Spot on dish. My buddy had the chicken parm and ate only a few bites. He did not think too much of it at all. Overall I’d be willing to give it another try but not rushing back anytime soon.

Great Italian

By lawdog43 |

Chef Vic's great Italian cuisine aside, this restaurant is upscale, but also like going into an Italian home where you are welcomed as one of the family. There are two restaurants, one in Lincoln Park and one on near West Madison. Both have the same ownereship, friendliness, and terrific food. The Meatballs are fantastic.

Another outstanding Italian restaurant heard from

By Taylor B |

Just when you think you've dined at every outstanding Italian restaurant in Chicago, you discover another one...and another one...and another one. On the way to visiting my brother the other day, my wife and I drove past Viaggio. I checked it out on the Internet. It looked appealing and inviting. So we made dinner reservations. Lucky us. Located at 1330 West Madison Street, near the United Center, in the West Loop/Randolph Street Market neighborhood, east of Ogden Avenue, it is open from 11 to 10 Monday through Thursday, 11 to 11 on Friday, 4 to 11 on Saturday and 4 to 8 on Sunday. Check it out. You won't be disappointed. It is a relaxed, stylish restaurant and bar featuring traditional Italian-American cuisine, including lots of veal dishes, in a white tablecloth setting with a classy vibe. Executive chef Nicolas Biscaglia, a native of suburban Elmwood Park, a veteran from Carmine's on Rush, has put together a menu of Italian recipes that my half-Italian wife thinks her grandmother must have conceived. For starters, we had fresh tomato bruschetta on grilled garlic crostini and Caesar salad with garlic croutons, parmesan cheese and anchovies with chicken. If you like veal, this is the place. We have veal nearly every Sunday at home. Viaggio's veal dishes are superb. My wife had veal scallopini with onion, mushrooms, white wine and marinara served over linguine, garlic mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. I had veal parmesan with fresh mozzarella and tomato basil sauce served with tortellini alfredo, vesuvio potatoes and sauteed wild mushrooms. For dessert, what else? Tiramisu is Italian for delicious. Viaggio is Italian for high quality.

Very, very good food and atmoshere!

By Jeff K |

Recent business lunch here. I was very pleased with the pleasant atmosphere and delicious food. I glanced at the dinner menu as well and will try to make it back for the mixed seafood that includes several varieties of shellfish and octopus. I highly recommend that you give it a try!

Amazing dinner!

We had a wonderful dinner! The food was amazing. The service was outstanding. The owner was so kind and moved us to another table to make sure we were comfortable. He gave me a hug when we left. A truly exceptional experience!

Wonderful!

By nator74 |

Loved this place! Not very busy when we went (it was a Sunday). I had the special which was sea bass over spaghetti noodles and sliced asparagus in a truffle butter sauce. It was soooooooo good! The service was so-so.

Really Average

By mjoytravel |

I believe this restaurant has good food. However the dishes the wife and I had were mediocre at best.We both ordered their specials: She had a short rib ravioli dish and I has a sausage dish (dont remember the name). Both dishes were ok but would not drive us to return to the restaurant. Perhaps if we had other dishes it would have made the difference for us. Interesting enough it was an early meal (5:30pm) and the wife ordered a Tiramisu. The waiter indicated they were out of it. Although it was disappointing that never happened before since Tiramisu is such a staple Italian dessert.

Don't miss this place!

By Stacy B |

Lived up to all the great reviews and then some! We arrived 20 mins before our reservation and them know we were happy to sit at the bar, but they seated us immediately and even gave us a choice of seating. A very warm welcome. Kyle was our server, he was engaging and knew the menu well. We started with the baked clams and grilled calamari, both great. I had one of the best dirty martini's with blue cheese stuffed olives in a long time. For dinner I had the sea bass special over angel hair pasta, very good. Husband had the penne bolognese, it was outstanding. The environment is good for a relaxing night out friends/family or dressing up a little for a fun date night out. A comfortable neighborhood feel as many people coming in were well known by the staff, but those of us visiting for the first time felt just as welcomed. Don't miss this place, its great and we will be visiting again and again.

Great Italian Food

By Christine O |

My friend and I were looking for a restaurant not too far from our hotel and settled on Viaggio's in Lincoln Park based on the reviews we read online. We were not disappointed. We both had the specials--mine was an angel hair pasta with grilled scampi and a lemon sauce. Just outstanding in flavor. I can't remember what my friend had, but she was also impressed by the taste and presentation. Wine selections were also good and the wait staff was friendly and attentive. We both said we'd return if the opportunity arose. Very pleased.

Dining alone .. sat at the bar .. very busy with pre-concert diners. Service was prompt, friendly and attentive. Great menu ..lots of choices. Caesar salad to start and Veal Parmesan entree with Tiramisu for dessert. Warm bread with olive oil and cheese served with salads. Nice wine list. Excellent meal ... would definitely return again. Highly recommend.

Old School Italian

By londongirl20 |

Location: Easy to find on Madison street, with Valet parking Ambiance: Small, noisy restaurant with a long bar, and many tables crowded together. Service: Waiter was attentive but very busy. Make sure you ask about the specials. Libations: The wine list was adequate. The lemon cello cocktail was very good! Appetizers: The meatball salad was AMAZING! Entrees: Eggplant Parmesan was delicious! The eggplant was cooked to perfection. Tortellini came with the entree and were in a light alfredo sauce which complimented the tomato sauce on the eggplant. The salmon and whitefish were also very good. Dessert: The root beer float was fun and very good, pass on the cannoli, order the taramisu instead.

Good Italian food

By dontrapper |

Good location in the west loop and a relatively small place. Service was very good and the menu has quite a few choice for appetizers and entrees. Two of us had the lasagna, one had the salmon oreganato and the other had the stacked eggplant for dinner although it’s listed as an appetizer. All of the food was plentiful and delicious. My only suggestion has to do with the lasagna; while there’s a ton of ground beef in it, it could be more seasoned or include some Italian sausage. The sauce that surrounded it made it more tasteful.

Delicious Italian!

By Hiyahol |

If you like your Italian food well prepared, plentiful served up with great attentive service, go to Viaggio's. My Eggplant Parm is up there with the best I've ever had. And bringing half home for tomorrow! A great Italian dinner.

A nice find in a crowded restaurant area

By Michael L |

We found this very pleasant Italian and ate very well. Portions are big and we had at least one more meal at home from the leftovers. We started with an appetizer of meatballs which were quite good - I like a bit more 'spring' when I bite into a meatball (usually from a mixture of bread and milk - a panade - with the meat). I had never seen eight finger cavatelli pasta before, but this dish was delicious. We also had linguini with clams which was full of clams in their shells, plus chopped clams in the sauce - very good. We ended with a vanilla bean cheesecake which was good, but not the best we've had.

Why have I ignored you for so long?

By Classicsmjr |

I have lived in Chicago for 18 years and have passed this restaurant but never went in. I attended a concert at the United Center and stopped in with friends for drinks and a quick bite. I am soooo glad I did! It was spectacular. The meatball salad is TO DIE FOR. The meatballs were super moist and just delicious. I tried some of the pasta dishes that friends ordered and they were great too. I will definitely be back!

West Loop Italian

By herb12345 |

Viaggio consistently offers great Italian food at reasonable prices in a comfortable casual setting. Salads and appetizers are usually big enough to share. Traditional preparations of meat, chicken and fish are well executed. The linguini with clams can’t be beat. Brick chicken is one of the House specialties. Daily specials supplement the varied regular menu.

Absolutely Delicious

By marie12345145 |

I can’t say enough about this restaurant. The decor is warm, inviting and casually elegant. Dave the owner is friendly and helpful with menu selections. The staff is efficient and courteous and I can’t say enough superlatives when it comes to the food ! We had the clam appetizer (which I would have licked off the table if I had dropped one bite!) and the special for the night Chilean Sea Bass. The eggplant parmigiana was the best I’ve ever had & I worked in an Italian restaurant in my youth. Pasta was divine, drinks generous, I would go to this restaurant every week if I lived in Chicago. Treat yourself to this wonderful restaurant.

Excellent Recomendation!

By Stebs65 |

We were in town for a hockey game and came to this restaurant on the recommendation of a friend who lives in Chicago. What an outstanding place! It looks and feels like what you would expect from a local Chicago Italian restaurant. The Brick Chicken is out of this world, worth traveling back to Chicago for! Service is outstanding as well. This place is definitely on the "return to" list when back in bean town!

Excellent

Solid Neighborgood Italian Fare

By Fontek |

As you enter the full bar is on the left and seating section on the right, with about 12-15 tables. The menu is not overwhelming, which is always a good sign in a small place (suggesting that they do a few dozen items very well). The calamari was well prepared and crispy with a light batter, but instead of traditional marinara they served it with a cold tomato sauce with mild bar-b-que flavor (not great). I had veal marsala, which was well-prepped and tasty with flat pounded veal and lost of mushrooms. My companions had sea bass and the skirt steak special. Everyone was pleased with the food. The meals came to $60 per person with tax and tip for the shared calamari, a glass of wine each, and entrees. Our server was attentive and knowledgeable.

Good food and great service. Entrees are between 20 and 30 USD. We had lasagna, carbonara, and spaghetti. If you’re in the area, worth a stop!

A neighborhood Italian gem

By Joe N |

Viaggio Italian restaurant provides a unique neighborhood feel with fresh pasta and homemade dishes. The owner walks about the restaurant greeting all of the guests and making them feel welcomed. He found out it was my mom's birthday and made sure the staff sung to her, gave us dessert, and even had the waiter pour some homemade limoncello for us after the meal. My pasta dish was fresh, tasty, and perfectly balanced. An incredible meal. I highly recommend to anyone in the Chicago area. Oh, did I mention they have some of the best meatballs in the country? Get the meatball salad, you won't regret it.

Best Italian atmosphere I ever experience in US restaurant

By Malish2000 |

Great place for authentic Italian food with excellent service (ask for Matthew to be your waiter ) . Meatballs salad and limoncello you must have it from all great menu .

Good Italian restarant

By TripPhotographer52 |

This restaurant is near my daughter's apartment. The food and atmosphere were very good. I had veal Florentine- with spinach, etc- it was excellent. My daughter and her boyfriend had pasta dishes- they accommodated them by substituting fish for chicken in the dish on the menu. We had a couple desserts- cannoli and some spumoni covered in chocolate sauce. The waiter was very helpful and friendly.

Very good Italian dishes, especially roast chicken

By Arthur H |

Our group of six enjoyed this neighborhood favorite. Everyone liked his/her meal. Two of us had the Chicken Vesuvio and thought it was outstanding. (And we are experts on roast chicken). Service was very good -- and surprisingly fast given that the place was almost full. Portions are more than generous. Also, the owner is on the premises and keeps a close eye on diners to make certain they are enjoying themselves. A very nice experience.

Brick Chicken, Italian style, must to try.

By AnatoliyG |

If you will visit Chicago, I strongly recommend to go to this restaurant. It provides a wide variety of Italian food. Of course a lots of pasta dishes. But I strongly recommend to try "Brick Chicken". No pasta, but this de-boned whole chicken is prepared by so delicious way that you should not miss it. "De-boned Whole Chicken, Olive Oil, Garlic, White Wine, Italian Herbs served with Roasted Potatoes and Broccolini." (I posted photo of this dish also). Ride to this place just for brick chicken will be valuable addition to good experiences in Chicago. Place is popular but waiting will be not too long, reservation may help. Important thing is the owner's style to treat everyone personally and very warmly. Creates a kind of "coming home" atmosphere. Servers are very accurate and careful. +++++ experience. Prices are reasonably moderate, not overpriced. Kids can come too.

Better than the BEST

By travln4 |

Had dinner there before a Neil Diamond concert at the UA....The place was jammed with customers, no doubt also attending the concert. We had reservations so our seating was immediate. The menu had many interesting items...my choice was for Penne pasta with the Arriabatta sauce. What fantastic mouth fullfilling flavor. My opinion it was the "BEST" I have tasted anywhere in the USA. Wowser's...a sure winner. Although very busy our order came in a timely manner. So don't walk, don't run but take a cab, a train or even hire a helicopter to get there. Italian food that IS THE BEST in Chicago !!!

Excellent Italian Food and atmosphere

By 4snickers |

Ok this sounds odd but we started with the meatball salad...all I can say is Yum! The meatballs are moist and very tasty, my husband who is not a salad fan actually loved it...We had reservation, very important, and were seated by the front window..Lively action here on a Saturaday night, with excellent service and food. Our waiter was flying around as he had a large party plus several tables to take care of , didn't feel ignored..Loved the Italian atmosphere and character. They do have valet for $10 per car, not too bad, but since our car was just parked across the street perhaps not worth it? Will definitely stop here again when we visit.

Warm spot, classic Italian

By Steve W |

Great before the game, but really anytime. Warm atmosphere, good service, classic Italian food well-presented.

Well Worth It!

By Christine H |

We had a family party at Viaggio's on a Friday night. That's a very busy night for a restaurant in the city and they accommodated our large group with skill and graciousness! The food was wonderful, everything from apps to dessert. It was quite crowded and noisy, but that's a testimony to how good it is. Definitely going back with my husband mid-week for a romantic dinner!

Excellent

By LABill75225 |

Our first visit to Viaggio came last night. This place is great. Nice decor and ambiance. Nice bar. Excellent food served quickly. We had the lasagna ( crazy good ) the chicken piccata ( outstanding ), risotto ( incredible ) and the sea bass special ( excellent). Do yourself a favor and go soon. This is also close to the United Center for Bulls and Blackhawks games.

So this is Deep Dish?

By Local G |

I've made it to my latter years without ever having Chicago deep dish pizza. I was in Chicago for a conference and the locals were proud of Viaggo and brought a group here. I was disappointed. It tasted like good pizza but the crust was almost cookie-like. I'll stay with my crispy New York pizza, thank you. Place was noisy.

Must try!

By Derek C |

Some of the best Italian food I have had. Great service, the waiter was very helpful and friendly. Overall, our group of 8 had a great experience and will definitely be back.

Extremely solid, traditional Italian restaurant with great service and close to United Center

By Cheffrey_C |

We went tonight for our first time and had a really nice meal. Boys night out, two men, two boys and we all loved it. I had the scampi which I never order but Nicholas, our great waiter said theirs was really good and it was. Nicholas was charming, attentive and efficient, what more can you ask for? Oh, we had a nice time speaking French after learning he grew up in Paris. The maitre d'hotel (didn't catch his name) was super friendly on the phone and even more so on the phone. This is absolutely my new go to before United Center events but I'd go here in a heart beat, any night of the week.

Excellent Italian Cuisine

By Indianamon |

My wife and I stopped in for dinner on Valentine’s Day and had the best time at Viaggio. Our dinner was excellent and we received very large portions so we took dessert to go and ate it later at the hotel. Dinner and dessert were very good. I would like to thank Christine for her exceptional service as well!

Impressed the Clients prior to the HAWKS game

By chifinn |

Took some customers to the Blackhawks game which you can walk to this place anytime except winter. Viaggios knows that how to handle a game day crowd, they get the fabulous food to you fast and hot. The Meatball Salad is one of kind and the price is right!!! This is the spot anytime going to the city!!!

Great find

By Hygienist83 |

Great meal, Great service! Must order meatball salad and pasta with pork gravy (tomato sauce). Large portions, nice atmosphere. It's a short uber/cab ride from Michigan Ave. Definitely worth the trip for such fresh, good Italian food.

Always a good bet

By Steve W |

Great spot before the game, but the food would be excellent anytime. Great service, attentive, warm atmosphere, terrific Italian.

A true gem ... some of the best Italian in Chicago and a great family atmosphere

By Shelliu |

Whether looking for a place for before a Hawks or Bulls game, a client lunch or dinner with family, Viaggio is the perfect choice. You always feel like family there, they have exceptional service and even better food (meatball salad, sausage & peppers and eggplant parm are my favorites but everything I have tried is top notch). They also have wonderful homemade bread and desserts to start and finish your meal. You wont be disappointed!!

Italian Delight

By Jeff M |

I came here with a friend to have dinner prior to the Hawks-Preds game on Jan. 8. I've seen this restaurant, but never eaten here prior. We had reservations and they were just a few minutes behind seating us. The manager/owner?? offered us a drink as an "apology". We simply took him up on diet drinks. I was just floored by how accomodating they were for a simple, but normal, situation. We were never "put out" by any type of delay, and here we were...offered drinks. That's "Keep Your Customer Coming 101" right there. We sat down to a bowl of sweet peppers (I mean, yum). Our waitress, whose name I didn't catch, was just the best! She was a great server, friendly, came by constantly, chatted with us, and just made us feel like we were her most important customers (she had several of course). Now, the food? OMG! I had amazing salmon oreganotto and I couldn't ask for more. It had amazing flavor and yummy Yukon'ish potatoes. The restaurant is so close to the United Center that it makes it a perfect location pre game. This place is a gem and I promise to come back often now. As a season ticket holder, I plan on it. Thanks to all at Viaggio who made our dinner the best. Plus....who can turn down York Peppermint patties that they give you at the hostess stand? :)

Momma Mia!!

By Steven L |

This is one of my favorite restaurants in Chicago, and it is my first choice for a Southern Italian style restaurant anywhere. The atmosphere is a comfy, neighborhood haunt. The service is old style Italian. The food is extraordinary. The menu has a wide variety of choices, and the portions are quite generous. The desserts are amazing. This should rank at the top of any list for Italian eateries.

Great Italian!

By Mastifflover2 |

We recently found this place and have been there 4 Times in the last 3 months. It’s a small almost quaint little place on Madison ave with great Italian food in a non pretentious setting. The servings are massive and can be shared and very reasonably price. They have a decent wine list and a full bar. The service is absolutely fantastic. It’s is a little loud and make feel crowded due to a smaller size.

A great Italian restaurant in the west loop.

By deerstein |

Went here last night for our anniversary. There were 6 of us, only one of us had been there before. We had heard many good things about this place. We had an 8:30 reservation. We arrived at 8:15 and we were sat right away. Our waiter Alberto came over and welcomed us. He told us about the specials and gave us a very good description. We started with the meatball and Caesar salad. Sounds weird, but it was really good. We also had the calamari. Very good. Each of us had a different entree. All of them were exceptional. The items we had included; rigatoni w/ Sunday pork gravy, veal west loop, salmon, tortalloci special an d the fish special (bronzeni). The veal and the bronzeni were exceptional. The rigatoni with Sunday pork gravy was unreal. Since we were celebrating we had to get 3 deserts. Bread pudding, cannoli, and cheesecake. All were very good. Sam the owner sent us over a lemonchillo. It was a nice treat. Upon sitting down it was a bit loud. We were next to a loud large party of about 15. Once there food came, all was good. The service was exceptional. All the food great. It was a great place to spend our anniversary, and be with our kids! We will be back. This is an outstanding accommodating place with great food! A must go to!

Disappointing!

By Bobbie W |

Service and atmosphere were great. However,we were disappointed in our entrees. We both got the linguine with clams. Where were all the chopped clams that were supposed to top the pasta. I had to ask for more since there was maybe a teaspoon of chopped clams besides the whole clams. They did add a couple of tablespoons. The pasta was good but we thought the dish was lacking. Perhaps more garlic and more pepper flakes would have helped. The decaf coffee was delicious, but the first cup came cold. We had to ask for another cup but hot. Overall, we were surprised at the high rating on the food. The best part was the York peppermint Pattie’s they gave out at the hostess stand.

Exactly the kind of “Red Sauce Italian” place we were looking for

By dgsaltman |

Came here with husband, son and son’s girlfriend. This is NOT nuveau cuisine. This is not “small plates.” This is not ironic house music. This is a loud, happy, authentic Italian-American dining experience. The food is tasty and plentiful. The wines are fruit forward and yummy. The service cares that you’re there, wants you to love your meal and laughs at the table with you. If you live nearby and you’re reading this you’re probably already a regular. Enjoy!

Classic "Chicago" Italian

By kenarv |

Nice family-owned 50 seat restaurant Excellent Homemade Pastas, Sauces; super nightly specials; Wines & wine list is average- nice place for a date or a group You won't be disappointed

Favorite in a city of favorites

By chelseafcguy |

This is a fantastic location on West side that has old Chicago tradition and fantastic food. Service is amazing and locationis great for United Center or just a great meal. Up and coming area. You won't be disappointed!

Good food and service.

This is a solid choice for dinner. Good Italian classics, reasonable wine offerings, great service and a cool ambiance.

Awesome!

By Trhchili |

We are in town from Dallas for a convention and made it out to Viaggio for dinner....and all I can say is WOW! The food, the drinks, the service, the atmosphere and talking with the owner are beyond great! We will ALWAYS come back here! Thank you so much!

Terrible Disappointment

By MandDplus2 |

Had 3 days for meals in Chicago on vacation and picked Viaggio for Italian based on reviews. Positive reviews sound like a completely different restaurant! There was no atmosphere or ambiance. Place was as bright as a hospital operating room. And a big screen tv was in the back room. At a "nice" Italian restaurant? Very odd. Paint was chipping off the walls and chunks of plaster falling too. Waiter was hurried and arrogant. Didn't know anything about wine list. Which was very over priced at 3X retail. $15 calamari was the same as you'd get at a fast food joint. Green salad had half a tomato and one slice of cucumber. And was DRENCHED in balsamic vinegar. Inedible. Veal parmigana was good but over priced at $26 in a restaurant like this. 8 tiny pieces of tortellini came with it; the best part of entire meal. I had the recommended rigatoni with pork. It was awful. Gummy pasta and sauce like it had been siting for hours and re heated. Very disappointed we wasted an evening here. Had amazing meals elsewhere: Bavettes, Miss Ricky's, Fronterra Grill and Atwood!

Great Traditional Italian

By paminthegarden |

Very good food here in a warm neighborhood Italian atmosphere. The menu is very traditional and portions are substantial. Great place when you miss your Nonna's cooking.

Great neighborhood setting

By HalleGrace |

We joined friends here for dinner on a Friday night. The place was hopping, so glad to have reservations. Our service was great. We went straight to entrees as we planned to leave room for dessert. My spouse and I ordered the lobster ravioli and filet specials. Both were wonderful. The filet was perfectly medium rare, melting in your mouth. I LOVE mashed potatoes and these were some of the best I've ever had. Typically restaurant mashed pots are average at best, but these are worth ordering alone. I think there was parmesean in the ones with the steak - adding to the texture and taste. The lobster pasta was served in a cream sauce with pesto. The dish was large and could clearly have served two. I felt terrible leaving some behind, but I couldn't simply eat it all. We ordered the Spumoni bomb for dessert - a chocolate covered ball of Spumoni for the table. It was a nice treat. The standout was the sea salt carmel gelato. Smooth, creamy and oh so delicious.

Great italian at a great price

By fantifan |

I loved this small Italian restaurant in downtown Chicago. The atmosphere was warm and the service was excellent. Great bread that came with complimentary green and yellow peppers sautéed in olive oil. I have the veal marsala and it was perfectly cooked with lots of mushroom and a perfect marsala gravy. Oddly the side dish was marinara pasta and I would have preferred angel hair in a light garlic/wihite wine sauce but it was tasty. I finished with homemade Tarimasu and it was outstanding. So if you want authentic Italian at a great price in a homey atmosphere, this is my pick

Excellent old school Italian!

By Dadmeister |

We waited at the bar for our party to arrive and had a chance to look at the single malt selection. There is no list, but they have several excellent selections with a generous pour. There was complimentary pepperonata, evoo, and bread waiting at our table. We started with the meatball salad, baked clams and grilled calamari. Skip the calamari, but by all means do not miss tasting the meatballs. They melt in your mouth, and that sauce is spot on. The clams were also excellent, served with a thick lemony sauce. For entrees, we had the brick chicken, the pork chop parmigiana, the Sunday gravy pasta, linguini with clams and two specials. The portion sizes were more than generous. We are big eaters and could not finish. I had the Sunday gravy, which had huge hunks of tender pork in a simmered tomato sauce with a big dollop of ricotta on the side to balance everything out. The wine list is small, but well curated. We had a couple of bottles of ripasso at a real nice price point. It was most excellent. The service was excellent and very Italian. I definitely will want to come back here the next time I visit.

Tastes like your Italian grandma made the food!

By rowboatbeauty |

You would be hard pressed to find anything wrong with this restaurant! Sean the manager is super nice, attentive and the waitstaff are friendly! There is areas on this has been on several tvshows....the pasta with Sunday pork gravy is wonderful, my favorite dinner, and the meatballs and romaine salad is, well, I have trouble finding a word for it without repeating myself. While this is several blocks from the stadium (make a reservation on game or concert nights) it is well worth the cab ride if you are visiting the loop area. Outside eating and massive windows that open, too. Eat at the bar if you can't get a table. Don't forget the gelato.

Loved this gem in Chicago!

By Sarah_L830 |

My husband and I had dinner at Viaggio on a recent trip to Chicago. The food was fantastic and it was a very nice escape from the tourist filled restaurants around Michigan avenue. Delicious Italian food in a casual atmosphere. The meatball salad was fantastic!

A most spectacular establishment

By mssuek |

The people who work here are wonderful. The wine list is awesome. The Limoncello is killer. The food was stupendous. And you absolutely have to try the Espresso Martini. I can't say enough good things about this restaurant.

Charming restaurant

What a great experience. Charming restaurant with good food and service. The atmosphere is cozy and the prices were very reasonable. We enjoyed everything about our experience there.

Great Meal Before Concert at United Center

By roadtripmemories |

Had dinner here before a concert at United Center. Ordered a delicious chicken/pasta special which was wonderful. One of the best parts was they have a shuttle to take you directly to the United Center and the valet parking pulls your car into garage across the street from the restaurant. Very convenient! After concert, restaurant is close enough that we just walked the 5 or so blocks back to garage. Gave it 4 stars because the waiter was hard to flag down at end of our meal because he had way too many tables but was a good guy. Our reservation was at 5:30pm and as time went by the noise level did get very loud and almost hard too hard to have a conversation. But the food and convenience to UC was excellent!

Great Italian food

By Ken M |

Service was excellent. I had one of the pasta specials and it was prepared very well. Also, they made a good wine recommendation.

Great food

By Lori T |

The food was outstanding. Very flexible with the menu. I was able to substitute risotto for pasta. The pasta with vodka sauce was excellent. Added meatballs. The West Loop chicken was delicious. We ordered a side of mushrooms as an appetizer. They were great. Our service was good to start. However, as the night went on, the service level declined. We are not sure if the waitress had too many tables or was upset we only ordered one bottle of wine. We would go back regardless since the food was so good.

Friendly service, great menu items

By Jayhawk17 |

Really enjoyed our visit, the friendly service and unique menu items. Great meatballs. Our server also made suggestions for menu items at Girl & a Goat when we told him we were going there.
