Welcoming, Neighborhood Gem

By Paloma |

We discovered Vinegar Hill House thanks to a server we met who gave us the tip while in Provincetown, MA just a few days prior. Great eclectic wine list at this establishment. We had a 2015 Szekszard Kekfrankos Rose with a beautiful strawberry nose that jumped out at me. Dexter took good care of us at the bar and we had a peek into the tiny kitchen at the other end of the room. Highly recommend the blue corn bread and chicken in a skillet. All vegetable appetizers were elegantly dressed. Can't wait for a return trip to this welcoming spot in Brooklyn.

Fine Dining on the Fringe of DUMBO

By markemarvel |

Located on the northern fringe of DUMBO, Vinegar Hill House is still where DUMBOers go to get away from the tourists and real estate bottom-feeders who have invaded the neighborhood. Named by a 19th century developer as a way to attract Irish immigrants to the area, Vinegar Hill still gives off a movie set sense of history from the Belgian block streets and original brownstone buildings that define its remaining four block area. The restaurant, which is located on the ground floor of one of these brownstones, combines a carefully-selected casual aesthetic with 10 to 12 shoulder-rubbing tables to create its neighborly dining-hall vibe, capped off by the large wooden organ hanging behind the bar and, just beyond the bar, a small open kitchen. A downstairs wine cellar includes a few more tables while out back a beautiful garden basically doubles seating capacity from May through September. If eating here gives off a sense of casual camaraderie that's also because the food that comes out of the brilliant Chef Michael Poiarkoff's kitchen is deliciously and deceptively simple - a mix of farm fare staples like cast iron chicken and pork chops with yummy side dishes like the cornbread plate (that's a full circular plate of cornbread saturated with butter about an inch-and-a-half deep) and a large cheese plate or pears & fennel starter. But there's a reason why Poiarkoff's insanely delicious red wattle country chop has become one of New York's signature dishes, and that sense of delicious simplicity carries over to virtually everything on the menu (like the cast iron chicken, dripping with the crisp succulence of food sourced from local farms). But if there's one thing you have to try it's the buttery cornbread. Get one to share with the table, and one to take home for yourself. Finally, returning to the neighborhood's movie-set sense of history, take an after-dinner stroll up the hill to the Commandant's House, an 1806 mansion designed by Charles Bulfinch, one of the architects who designed the U.S. Capitol Building. As you approach the black metal gate you'll see the beautiful white behemoth looming in the distance like a ghost guarding the Brooklyn Navy Yards below, and behind the gate a 100-yard driveway with cars from the 50s and 60s to complete the picture.

A Gem!!!

By PKaur |

The service was fabulous. It was intimate, homey and welcoming. The bacon is perfect and cooked to your preference, but the star of the menu is the sourdough pancake. One bite = bliss. However, the fried potatoes could do with a little more seasoning, but the pancake makes up for it.

Outstanding!

This was truly one of the best restaurants I have been to in a long time. Everything was amazing from start to finish. I have been recommending to everyone I would go bad in minute.

What a find!

By n6travellerLondon |

We had dinner here Iate on a Sunday night after seeing a play at the nearby St Ann's theatre . The location is all part of the charm and is entirely unexpected. There was a great atmosphere when we arrived and the place had a really cosy look with wooden , candlelit tables. The young staff were great and the food was very enjoyable. The next time I am in NY I we will definitely visit here again especially in the warmer months when it's possible to sit in the garden at the rear.

Do not miss it

By Paolo S |

Suggested by friends from NYC. Excellent food (no matter what you like and choose, it is evident the quality of food, here, is top-standard, as well as its preparation). Excellent wine (my partner is French, and I am Italian: we do know what we are talking about). Excellent service (smart, educated, competent, friendly, young). Excellent "ambiance" (good lighting, good music, very nice and quiet). One of the best Christmas-Eve dinner I can remember.

Overpriced, overrated but nice ambience

By BibiDub |

We went to this restaurant based on a recommendation from our Airbnb host. We had enjoyed all their other recommendations and so saved this restaurant to celebrate an occasion we had during our trip. We were disappointed. The food was different and the menu had plenty of interesting combinations so we were looking forward to the food. However, apart from the corn bread which we all really enjoyed we felt there was something on every other plate that just didn't work. The quality of the food was good but the portions were small. We did only order 5 mains and the corn bread so maybe we missed some great starters or desserts. We won't go back.

Charming brunch

By neelyherridge |

To call it a pancake is an understatement. It was a heavenly puffed, German pancake. Friendly staff! (which was hard to find in Brooklyn)

Hottest Bartender in Town!!!

By leeniebeans |

My French friend and I visited for brunch and the pancake was delicious!!! The bartender was dreamy (big man with a beard and a man bun) and made us great drinks. Very cool vibe and great music selection. Would 100% recommend!!!

Excellent restaurant in Dumbo

By hyperballad4 |

Vinegar Hill House is sort of off the beaten path and down a non-impressive street. But the restaurant is a quaint, country farmhouse with excellent service and food (although the wines were nothing special and a bit disappointing but that was the only thing). The chicken two ways was excellent! My boyfriend didn't want to get chicken because usually it is the least exciting dish on a menu, but I had heard such great things about it, I persuaded him to try it and we were not disappointed. Both pieces of chicken were moist and flavourful. The lamb was also good as well as the cheese and meat platter. We took in the Brooklyn Bridge Park that is under the Brooklyn Bridge and next to the Manhattan Bridge and it was a great way to start a meal.

What a find!

By Michael S |

My daughter and I walked across the Brooklyn Bridge and then went on to check out the Naval Yards. Time passed quickly and hunger began to set in. Vinegar Hill House was highly recommended so we decided to give it a try. It is located in a charming small neighbourhood and is the kind of place one could easily miss as it is totally unpretentious. We decided to split some appetisers thinking that would be sufficient so we ordered the spring peas, charred beets, and blue corn cornbread. The spring peas was the perfect dish to cool us off after a long walk in the sunshine. Every ingredient was fresh and bursting with flavour. The dish as a whole was light thanks to the light amount of cream fraiche. The charred beets were also mouthwatering delicious. One might not think the ingredients would hold together so well but once again everything was well balanced that the result was a very memorable dish. Here we noticed once again that the beets were of excellent quality and obviously picked by the Chef for the flavour they held. The chèvre was also of very fine quality. It is important to note that the Chef insures each ingredient will be appreciated on its own as well as in concert with the others. The blue corn cornbread may not be for everyone but we loved it! Spicy butter laces the coarse blue corn giving it a decadently rich flavour. While savouring every bite of our 3 dishes we noticed a huge plate full of incredible looking meat pass our table. Upon inquiring about the dish we were told it was the Red Wattle Country Chop. We had to order this and I can say it was one of the most wonderful pork dishes I have ever eaten. The pork was of the finest quality, tender and moist, and lightly smoked. It was served on a bed of bone marrow infused grits. What an amazingly memorable meal. I will definitely return to this restaurant the next time I am in NYC!

A vibe that is unique even for NYC

By Jgrabow54 |

So this is my neighborhood spot so I thought it was time I gave it a review. I come probably twice a month for brunch, and it ends up as a date night at least 2-3 times a month for dinner. While the vegan options can be limited (my wife is vegan), the decor, ambiance and the food keeps you coming back. I even like eating by myself here with the copper top bar and a New York Times. It's cozy. So there are lots of reviews about how expensive it is. This is NYC, and yes it is pricey. But hey, this is Vinegar Hill, not Bay Ridge. For dinner, pork chops are solid, and usually whatever special they have is great. For brunch, the trout eggs benedict, the pear pancakes, and (when they have them) the biscuits and gravy will make you keep coming back to this place. In warmer months, sitting outside in the patio makes it a perfect brunch experience.

Very good but awful in terms of service and quantity

By Serge C |

When we ordered our Cacio e pepe, we were told that it would take 25 minutes before being served. We didn't receive any explanation why. After 40 minutes, we finally received our plate. The quantity was far beyond what could have been expected. Definitively not enough !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Food was good, service not so much

By Daphne M |

I'm not sure what to say about this place. We got there early, before they opened on a Saturday afternoon. Waited in line. When they opened, we were seated in the order that we arrived. While the food was good, I don't think we would return. During the entire meal, we felt that the service was annoyed by our questions. I also think that they pushed us to order more than we wanted to order. The best part of the meal was the charcuterie, my kids loved it, though I really don't think the staff cared for my kids. Having lived in Brooklyn before we had kids, I remember that there are places that just don't want kids around, even if it is early...

Tasty food, served in small portions

By crazyandcrazier |

All of the raves about the food and drinks here are right on. Super tasty! But my $12 drink went down pretty fast. Since I ultimately had two and my husband had two, that means we spent $48 on four drinks that were seriously juice-glass size. We weren't given bread (though other tables got a basket). The salads were actually a decent size, which left us unprepared for the tiny meal portions. We split a dessert, then walked to Jacques Torres to split a second dessert at half the $9 price that Vinegar Hill charges for its sweets. In short, we sincerely loved every swallow, but man, I don't think the value is there. It's fun to do once if you're a restaurant-lover (the place has a great vibe) but it could never be a regular hang for us.

Restaurant Gem

By Val W |

Tucked away in a small area of Dumbo that is very village like, this restaurant is a gem. There is always a line waiting for them to open for the very good reason that the food is imaginative and very good. I particularly liked the grilled lamb. Great atmosphere. One of the best restaurants in New York. There are a lot of Manhattenites who do not cross the river, which is a shame because the Brooklyn restaurants are great. Take the ferry to Dumbo and go to this place for dinner

Cute, cozy, and delicious!

By Allie |

Very cute, quaint restaurant off the beaten path in Brooklyn. The food was delicious and the restaurant vibe was very cool. We ate downstairs near the fireplace which was really nice on the cold day. Highly recommend the sourdough pancakes. Staff was friendly and we really enjoyed our time there.

Wonderful menu and cozy ambiance

By Gina M |

When I asked an employee at St. Ann's Warehouse for a post theater dinner recommendation, he immediately said that Vinegar Hill House was the best in the neighborhood. Agreed! The variety of cast iron chicken, flat iron steak, pork chop, fish, pasta and seasonal vegetables offered something for everyone. Each dish was well balanced --a perfect example of farm to table. We enjoyed the Arctic Char with beets, horseradish crème, dill and almond pistou and the Red Wattle Country Chop with sauerkraut, braised beans, parsley. The selections of cocktails was small but mighty. I particularly like the "Little Friend" with Pueblo Viejo blanco, lemon, aperol, cappelletti, chili-sesame oil. Most of all, the ambiance is so cozy with dim lighting and lots of candles.

Worth the Trip Off the Beaten Path!

By PLRUS |

Located in Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn, about a 10 minute walk east of Brooklyn Bridge Park. The neighborhood setting is awesome. It is experiencing some revival with a lot of new residential development occuring in and around old industrial buildings. The restaurant itself it tastefully decorated with furniture and furnishings with a American countryside feel. This brings the dining experience full circle as the food is classic country fare with a big city twist. There is a great wine selection (reasonably priced, $35-100/bottle). Mixed drinks are excellent as well. The food... let me tell you, is awesome! Lambs Neck (amazing), Roasted Chicken Breast & Thigh (perfect), Country Chop served over Jalepeno Grits (out of this world). I highly recommend making a reservation (parties of 4 or more only) via Opentable or arriving around the open (6pm). This place gets busy and noisy! My only grievance was that the hostess didn't have a very hospitable attitude but this is New York. Expect to spend approximately $170 for four people including wine.

Not sure about the Michelin star!

Service was fine, place was what one should expect from Dumbo/Vinegar Hill/Wmsburg.. food was OK but nothing great. I was underwhelmed. Good service. Good bar.

Awesome Brooklyn surprise

By mike f |

Walking through Brooklyn on a cool Sunday morning we found this little gem. A very unexpected find on a street that is a bit run down. Vibrant and friendly atmosphere. Say at bar since we didn’t have reservations which was fine. Bloody Mary and the orange juice were a great start. Unique and eclectic menu. The shrimp and grits were perfect. The baked pear pancake was delicious. The yogurt with granola and plum was a yummy combination.

A secret(almost!) location for great food

By michael c |

Went for dinner at this gem, hidden near DUMBO in a 19th century building. Great decor and even better food. Try the seafood and pasta. Menu changes often so you will never be bored. Go!

Lovely brunch

By NJBrooklynborn |

We ate here before a show at St. Ann's Warehouse. Very nice ambiance, quirky and understated. My entree and my cocktail were delicious. The only negative is that no desserts were offered at brunch. After my savory meal, it would have been nice to end with something sweet.

...Too much attitude for fairly average food.

By food lover |

We arrived about 10 minutes early in the pouring rain to watch the front staff sheepishly watch us get soaked while two of them walked in and out of the restaurant. It would have been so much more welcoming to invite us in and offer us a warm drink. We were finally invited in when we looked like drenched rats at about 10:27 p.m. It was positioned as a favor. We were one of three parties standing outside in the rain. We were immediately sent to the basement, where I could smell carbon monoxide. We were taken away from a fully empty restaurant that was bright and had windows, and escorted downstairs. That was ageist and unwelcoming. The food? The grits were great. My $18 ham and cheese grilled sandwich was delicious but way overpriced. The coffee was poorly brewed, weak and extremely mediocre. There was only milk, no cream or half and half. The front staff needs to take a class in service. I would not drive to Brooklyn to spend almost $90 on brunch for three, when the staff did not have the skills to be welcoming. I have never written a bad review before.

So disappointed for first time

By Terry S |

We have been here several times and have raved about our experience. Octopus appetizer was excellent. I had the chicken which was delicious my husband ordered the Red Wattle, we’ve had this many times before and was phenomenal, tonight was it uneatable so much fat plus NO flavor whatsoever. If this was our first visit we would never have returned. Couldn’t see how chef didn’t notice the entire piece of pork was fat. The waiter never checked in during the meal, so we didn’t have chance to correct. Saw waiter after everything was cleared away. They did comp the dinner which was good but unfortunately hubby had to get something to eat elsewhere.

Great Brunch

By megmb770 |

First visit to this very unique restaurant. We had a pre-wedding brunch there with our son and family. All of the offerings were great - as we like to share. Sourdough apple pancakes are awesome, as well as the eggs benedict, and the specials of the day. Comfortable atmosphere and good staff/service. A place to go when in Brooklyn, New York.

secret recipe for pancakes.

Most pleasant surprise; had brunch, and tried their sourdough pancake. To die for. Service was most friendly; place was quite quaint; had a nice neighborhood walk after (small but interesting).

old new york

By Stuartg777 |

What a pleasant surprise! One of the most pleasant eating experiences in a long time. While the menu is not large, there are some very interesting offerings. And all four of us were thrilled with our food and service. The area is also interesting to visit.

Charming small restaurant on cobblestoned street with delicious food

By lovethat |

FABULOUS! Wonderful menu - though portion sizes may not be huge. Asparagus salad was fresh, flavorful & well seasoned. Cast Iron Chicken was incredibly juicy with delicious sides. The chicken liver mousse with toast tasted WONDERFUL!! We will be back!

Excellent from start to finish

By Mark G |

Haven’t given a 5 star rating but this place changed that. Everything fell into place for a great meal. Great time with friends Beautiful place Great service Excellent menu The bronzino was awesome! A filet for a change and not the whole fish. Done perfectly!!! The beet salad was perfect. Fresh! The sweet potato dish for a side was amazing. Jalapeño slices and a sweet sauce underneath made this dish one of my favorites of all time. The cast iron chicken was so tender and juicy the flavor just jumped out. Can’t wait to come Back to Brooklyn and go again. Give it a try if you are here.

Great for a hipster brunch

By ETWTraveller |

Had a delicious brunch here with goat cheese omelette, honey fried bacon and pear pancakes. Very tasty. Service isn't the best, I suspect that the waiters/waitresses are to hip to bother to smile, but we anyway enjoyed our meal in this quiet and beautiful part of Brooklyn. Make sure to reserve a table.

Great meal

By Barbara K |

Different menu- fresh, various choices, but items never had before. My son had a special heritage pork that he loved. My roasted acorn and butternut squash with hummus appetizer was great. Red trout main course was perfectly cooked. And the hot pecan cinnamon roll was to die for! Very good service.

great location and food, terrible value

By 124kross |

The food and atmosphere are charming but it is hard to feel that they both compensate for the terribly small serving sizes. In the tradition of steakhouses, all sides are a la carte. The sardine special included a delicious single fish. Great catch if you can afford it.

Hidden Gem

By charliebrooklyn |

Very enjoyable evening A quiet, out of the way location, in Brooklyn, that I have been to before but never rated Staff was attentive and friendly and both our meals were well above average. Definitely a place to go back to.

Something missing

By Christine W |

We came with great expectations 2.5 years ago and were appalled to pay a big price for a good wine that was served in a ball mason jar. Contrived rustic in amber light is the decor. After a bit it is attractive when the restaurant fills with people. We were told this is the best restaurant in the area. So we have come back to try again, as the word on the street was the same, best place in Dumbo. The greeting was very enthusiastic and friendly. My husband ordered the trout and I ordered the brined pork chop with cheddar grits. We had the roasted beets with tofu for starter first course. The choice of wines by the glass was rather small we ordered a spanish white to go with the beets followed by a french gamy for the second course. Wines we ordered by the glass tasted quite average and were 12.00 per glass. Both wines were tepid and weak in character. The beets with tofu were so sad, tofu is not meant to go with beets. Taste sensation zero. My husband had trout with green beans, he gave the trout a thumbs up although very rare unnecessarily rare and the beans very tough. I had the highly reviewed pork chop brined and served over cheddar grits. Highly disappointing after I saw the next table over get the same dish and their chop was two times the size of my three bite chop which did not taste brined and had lots of excess fat so meat content for my main was paltry. The result we did not feel like desert got the bill and left.

Unique, Enjoyable and Delicious in Every Way

By RelaisAndChateau |

If you are looking for delicious, american fare that you cannot find everywhere else, this is the restaurant for you. Wattle Pork Chop was fantastic. Cheese course was fabulous. The drinks form the bar satisfying. Gets a rustic feel inside with the wood fired oven that gives a wonderful glow to the interior.

Really bad and overpriced

By Halboot |

Dinner with kids. Not tasteful and really really expensive. Wine served in cups. Meat full of fat. And served like we needed to go.

Comfortable atmosphere and great food

By Bari |

I recently met a friend at this restaurant, upon her suggestion. We sat at the bar for dinner. The bartender was really friendly- no pretentious service here! I loved our food and the rose we ordered was fantastic! I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are spending some time in DUMBO. It really stands out from the other DUMBO restaurants, both in terms of atmosphere and in the quality of the food.

Maybe It Was an Off Night? I Would Go Back To See.

By HolyokeHome |

I visited with my spouse on an October Sunday at 7pm. I made a reservation through the restaurant's website. We were seated promptly and the Maitre'D was very pleasant. The restaurant is small and the seating is close together. I wasn't surprised or bothered by that, but be aware and ask for a booth if you'd like space. But there is no sound dampening and the space was very very loud. So loud, in fact, I could not hear my mate sitting across from me. I ordered the pork and ricotta manicotti and my husband had the pasta special. Both were just ok. Not bad, in fact, solid. Our wait staff bordered on surly. When I asked if I'd done something to upset her, she said, no, just a long day. She cheered up a little after that. Okay. I get it, but until I asked it was kind of a yucky experience. To sum up: decent food in a loud space with a tired wait person. I would go back to see if this is standard or an off night.

Really out of the way but worth it!

By Brian B |

Find it first and then enjoy! we went for Brunch which was excellent and great food choices with a good vibe and excellent service

Unusual menu but great flavors

By Susie B |

Had a really pleasant meal on the back patio of Vinegar Hill House on Tuesday night. Much quieter outside. Took quite a while to get our entrees and one of us didn't care for the blow fish entree she ordered. Waiter said it was a fllet but it was two very boney little fish and hard to eat. They quickly fixed a trout entree for her and didn't charge for either. Two had lamb neck. Haven't ever seen that on the menu anywhere else.

Excellent food; eclectic wine list, in a great setting

By DAAFY |

This place was a great find. My kind of restaurant - a small menu with lots of daily specials, in a great setting. The house seems to be a colonial-era home, set out of the way of the tourist throngs that mob Dumbo, in a quiet residential, cobblestone area, more reminiscent perhaps of old Philadelphia than bustling NY. Inside this house, surrounding an open kitchen, the guests can enjoy a modern take on classic comfort food (shrimp and grits, pork chops, scallops, etc.), and accompany the great food with a wine list full of different choices than seen on 99% of other restaurants. Friendly service, great atmosphere, I would like to be a local so I could eat here weekly.

Cozy little hidden gem

By Yjyj2 |

We had brunch here and although there were constructions around the place, it was really quiet inside. The food is great, not a huge menu but I think the owner is quite confident of the whole menu, food was good and service too.

Great price & good food

By Victor T |

Its a good place to visit for a Sunday brunch ! Very relaxing and fun to be. Good price ! Enjoy the eggs Benedict !

My favorite in Brooklyn

By Carolyn M |

Ok, stop what you are doing and make a reservation at this restaurant. The meal I had here was one of the best meals I have eaten.....seriously! from the wild mushroom appetizer to the Wattle Chops and the most delicious cornbread I have ever had, this place is a winner!!! Everything is fresh and tasty and the place is rustic and quaint. Going back again for brunch next time real soon.

Terrific neighborhood atmosphere, but food left us wanting

By bouchee |

A refuge on a rainy night. Cozy as people gathered around the small bar waiting for tables. Eclectic, thoughtful wine and beer list, reasonably priced . . . Really wanted to like this place but hate to say that bread and butter, which were awesome, outshone everything else. The cheroulah spice on the halibut overwhelmed the fish, and everything else I put in my mouth the next 24 hours. I should've said something but I didn't want to wait for another dish. The pork chop was sliced, with little else on the plate, and didn't have the wow factor. Maybe I'm being unfair and if others have enjoyed the food, perhaps it was my off night . . .

Lovely brunch spot

By MmeGye |

My friend and I loved our brunch here. The blueberry pancake was especially excellent. The atmosphere is chill and cozy, and the staff is lovely. The menu is very limited, but that just guarantees you that you’ll get good dishes. Prices for each were around $16. Make sure to make a reservation, as it fills up pretty quickly.

Tasty food, indifferent staff

By musicmom3 |

We don't go to restaurants for personal interaction, but a warm hello and attentive service definitely contribute to a hospitable vibe--this place deserves better than the indifferent front-of-the-house and wait staff we encountered. The menu is limited but ingenious, with some nice combinations that live up to potential. Appreciated the sensible portions that don't induce food coma. Interior is cute and crowded, but comfortable. While we probably won't return because we prefer places that place value on a congenial demeanor, we certainly wouldn't fault the food.

Outstanding brunch at this hidden gem!

By rustycat83 |

During a recent trip to NYC, we took a walking tour of the Brooklyn Bridge and DUMBO. The trip ended at 2pm and we were fortunate to get a table for late brunch at Vinegar Hill House. This place is bit off the beaten path, but is worth the brief walk from Dumbo. The place is small in size and was packed with a young, local crowd. The food and service was outstanding. The pear pancakes are too die for. Will definitely be back in the future.

Atmosphere cosy and food good

By Stacey S |

My husband and I and baby in tow had dinner here as we wanted to check it out and are travelling ....so where we go, he goes! The woman who sat us seemed nice and accommodated us without reservation. The waiter was a bit cold and not too attentive, perhaps wanted to discourage our return with child or was distracted by Claire Coffee at the table in the corner. So, not a good place for kids as it's super small with tiny tables. I think the baby was pretty good all things considered. He loved the chicken and gnocchi! They don't serve bread or any sort of thing like that before or during your meal, which would have satisfied baby (and daddy) even more. Pricey, small portions for 'comfort food' but delicious!!

Loved the space, the service and most of the food.

By HopefulNYC |

I came across reviews of Vinegar Hill House when I was researching possible places for a rehearsal dinner, and kept it in mind. Decided to give it a try for Valentines Day, which happened to be a career celebration dinner as well. By eating there on the high demand holiday, we were required to sign a contract to do their prix fixe menu. We were game. Our waiter was about half way through what was surely a long and lucrative evening, and he was fun, knowledgable and attentive. It was easy to choose my courses from the small prix fixe menu and I enjoyed the rustic ambiance and lovely florals. Loved my crisped artichoke starter and lobster gnocchi appetizer. My sea bass brodo was good, but the squid accents, while perfectly textured, were pretty much tasteless, and the muscles were overcooked. I loved my chilled goat cheese desert with wine soaked pears and my husband's chocolate cake was dern good as well. All in all, considering the holiday craze, the food was better than one might expect (I always expect the food to be slightly below their best on Valentines Day). Although the portions were the right size for my appetite, it was all pretty modest considering the price tag. But perhaps we have to take responsibility for that for signing up on Valentines. We'll definitely go back and try it on a "normal" night as we did enjoy 95% of the food.

Excellent food in a very pleasant neighborhood

By neur14 |

I particularly like going to this tiny neighborhood N of DUMBO for its cobbelstone streets and small rowhouses that felt different from other parts of NY -- perhaps slightly continental. Restaurant was very busy on a Wed night. Service was slightly weak -- i was not informed that i had mistakenly ordered 2 pastas. Food was very good to excellent in the modern nouvelle style. Wine list was short and quite good for modest prices.

So Worth the Subway Ride

By SSAASSHHAA |

There really isn't much in the surrounding streets but this restaurant is for sure worth the trip. It's a destination eatery hands down. The food is hearty, wood oven made goodness and the crowd is your expected Brooklyn mosh of hipsters and coolier-than-thou-ers (but not to a fault). The place has been getting great buzz so it's always very busy which brings me to my only real complaint - space is a bit tight. Still, it's a very welcoming and warm atmosphere. These people know what they're doing and you should check it out.

Wonderful for brunch.

By azoomi |

What a unique and remarkable spot. Our cabbie got lost about 3 times and finally turned the meter off. Still it's worth it - you walk in the door and you're taken back in time. The brunch menu was not extensive but it had it all - unique satisfying flavors, amazing bloody marys and a pancake main dish that defies description. We had all had lots of to eat, but we still almost ordered a third one to split - it is one of the best things you have ever eaten. The service was terrific - even stored our bags for us on the way to LaGuardia. The ambiance will make you melt with good memories...would love to try an evening meal here sometime. Be sure you have your GoogleMap app fired up if it's your first time. (Be sure to also drop into the Japanese importer's shop around the corner to the north. Amazing stuff)

Favorite restaurant in NYC 👌

By Evan D |

I've been going to Vinegar Hill for years and am always happy with their food. The quality, presentation and ambiance is always on par. I've tried everything on their menu multiple times and am never let down. I highly recommend going. Be prepared to wait 45+... It's worth it!

A hidden gem in historic Brooklyn

By flower048 |

Walking through the old cobbled streets of Vinegar Hill, Brooklyn's old dockside hinterland, you'd be forgiven for thinking there'd be anything to find... but, lo! here is the Vinegar Hill House, a charming shabby chic eatery that nestles amongst the crumbling federal architecture. The interior is equally bohemian and begs you to settle in for a 'session' - good food, good wine and make sure you bring the good company! We booked for Sunday brunch and entered the restaurant a little before 1.30pm. The place was packed and the bonhomie was palpable. A mild October gave us the advatage of a garden table amidst the vines. A fine menu made choice difficult but fortified by the most magnificent Bloody Mary's we opted for the avocado toast and shrimps & grits with spicy sausage (sharing compulsory!). If you're looking for a culinary treat somewhere off the tourist track then this is a must. If you're local then I'm very jealous.

Delicious Feast

By Emily M |

Went here on a celebratory dinner with friends. Reservation was at 6:30--it's best to have a reso here, because the small space fills up fast in the evening. The specials of the day were as numerous and delicious sounding as the menu itself; we ordered apps, entrees and sides to share at the table and had quite a feast on our hands. Everything was delicious, but stand-outs were the New Haven cocktail; the pan-roasted chicken; and the cornbread. Service was prompt and friendly/professional, and the atmosphere was cozy and welcoming. Overall an excellent experience!

A solid food experience at a price

By StefR |

Vinegar Hill House is tucked away in one of the quietest neighborhoods in the borough with almost no traffic at all on the cobblestone street the restaurant is located in (although you will have to walk through some less visually appealing blocks to get there if you arrive via subway) The restaurant itself is charming in that that chippy decor sort of way. The whole look is very fitting with the neighborhood. Overall the service was good although I didn't especially appreciate the idea that the restaurant takes 6pm reservations but doesn't open up their doors until 6:05. A small thing but would have been nice to be able to go inside and have a drink at the bar rather than waiting outside being eaten by mosquitos when I arrived a few mins early. Once seated the food was universally very good. Nothing overly fancy or too sussed up for it's own good but all quality ingredients and preparation. Our group ordered pretty much everything on the menu and high marks all around. You will certainly pay for the quality - this is not an inexpensive place to eat - but a lovely spot for special occassions.

Cozy by the fire

By Chloelovestravel |

It was busy, busy, busy but that's to be expected on a Friday night. The location is a wee bit off the beaten path but not so much that I wouldn't go back. I loved the atmosphere, and the downstairs was cozy, a great choice if you wanna stay warm by the fire while you eat, loved our nook! The food is heavy on the meat but the delicata squash with pumpkin seeds was delicious!

Just lovely in Brooklyn

By cjmillerDallas_Texas |

We took the subway to Brooklyn because we wanted to walk across the Brooklyn Bridge from Brooklyn. Read about this restaurant in the Hunt Guides and decided to try it out. Just lovely is how we would describe our experience there. It's in a quiet neighborhood. The restaurant is small, and although the wait time for a table wasn't bad, we elected to eat at the bar and chat with the staff. The sourdough pear pancakes were deelish! We also shared sides of breakfast potatoes and bacon. Next time, I'm having a bloody mary...they looked amazing! Our walk across the bridge was lovely as well...what a beautiful morning!

Perfect, chill dinner spot.

By Sisterpv |

Loved this little place tucked away in a quiet neighborhood. I ate here with my daughter who lives in Dumbo, so we had a short walk to this little hidden gem. Courtyard is quaint and the foods and service was perfect. Nice wine list of mainly European wines. Started with cheese and jam, octopus - which was fantastic. She had fish and I had the pork chop - which was huge, but enjoyed after a day of walking 19 miles in the city. Service was timely but not rushed. Definitely will come back again.

Small menu, but excellent dining.

You must get the cornbread - salmon and brisket were also superb. The atmosphere was perfect for a summer night. Great spot!

Worth one visit but not two

By RGrochow@aol.com |

An inwardly inviting restaurant whose staff took me back to the feel of a commune in the seventies. Arriving a little before opening time, we waited at the bar while the staff arrived (the chef toting her adorable baby son). Notably the other, and I can't say why, the other staff members, hostess et al, were rather distant and unfriendly. Although we were the first in with a reservation we were initially directed to probably the smallest table put together for six and immediately adjacent to the end of the bar. Anticipating a bar crowd and cramped quarters we asked to be shown another table and sat at what was probably the best table in the house, a tiny alcove across from the open kitchen (the table with the picture of a naked lady). Our waiter was extremely knowledgable of the food ingredients and the wine list and was very accommodating. The service, despite the crowd, was not rushed and throughout the evening, different servers brought our dishes. Within the hour what was initially a quiet oasis on a appealingly near vacant street scape, became a focus of all the activity of the new Brooklyn. The bar was 2-3 deep and people were waiting for tables. The menu had an appropriate mix of offerings (although light on those from the sea). Do order the $9 corn bread (our party of six had two), a delightful accompaniment to the average price wine by the glass ($10), all of which were quite good. We sampled different appetizers and all were very good including the pumpkin soup with shrimp and the liver mouse. The boston lettuce appetizer while fresh from the garden taste and appearance was scantily clad with a few sliced of picked apples and croutons. The "signature" pork dish ordered by several did not disappoint from the reviews, and was delicious. The one fish course, the Artic Char, while very tasty and moist, arrived as the least artfully inspired plating of the evening. The steak was quite good as well. Desserts, (if shared you will each get a few bites) were all tasty but overpriced by several dollars (($12) and the french pressed coffee despite two attempts was just warm at best. So then the six of us enjoyed an appetizer each, one glass of one per person, two corn breads, six main dishes, one extra vegetable for the table,3 desserts and six coffee. With the 20% gratuity added in by the house the bill was $165/couple. Overall, an "interesting" evening with above average food, although not exceptional, unique menu offerings. If not for the generally unfriendly staffing, and the pricing that was $30 more per couple than I might have expected would try it again. That being said, there are plenty of new and exciting restaurants in Brooklyn to keep us busy for quite awhile without returning too soon.

Really good food!

By Samantha C |

We visited this restaurant after a friend's recommendation and we were really pleased we did. We had a simple pear salad to start, and then i had chicken and my partner had pork. Simple food beautifully cooked in wood oven, tender, fresh and tasty. We were warned of a 40 min wait for main course as everything cooked fresh which was fine by us. Booking on their website was really easy and service good. We paid around 100 dollars for 1 starter, 2 mains, 2 sides and two glasses of wine. Everything was excellent. Enjoyed walk before too along brooklyn heights to amazing view of manhattan skyline. Great evening and a highlight of our trip.

Good food, Brooklyn service

By Tribecan |

There's obviously a real chef here, because the food is excellent, and the cocktail and wine menu also very good. But the service is so slow that I've twice been bought drinks to make up for our entrees taking more than an hour to arrive. They really need to get a new manager, to bring the service up,to the level of the food. Nice, obviously, that they owned up to their mistakes and bought us drinks. But it would be way better of his didn't keep happening. I'll go again, but I hope they fire whoever is managing the service and get a professional.

Cozy

Lovely hidden place in an up and coming neighborhood in Brooklyn. Booked for my girlfriends birthday after hearing about this place through a friend of mine. Cozy, intimate setting outside in a little courtyard. Relaxed and friendly service and delicious food. Would recommend Vinegar Hill House to friends. Thumbs up! :)

amazing

By deehyang |

i trekked all the way to dumbo [brooklyn] through the sketchy streets and alleys to get to vinegar hill house. at first, you wonder wonder who would make this journey and if it will be even close to worth it… yes. it IS worth going into another world. it is nestled among houses and a cobblestone street; you can easily pass vinegar hill house. the first to arrive (i hate waiting in lines, i’d rather be early if you can’t tell already) we waited outside for the doors to open. its beautiful and very homey. i loved it. [except the walk back to the subway….] ordered a delicious fig dish, the red wattle pork chop, cast iron chicken, charred beets, & corn. besides the unaesthetic presentation of the charred beets [would have preferred it to be cut and easier to eat?], it was an amazing meal. the pork chops were perfectly seasoned and cooked, with the cheddar grits underneath…. it was phenomenal. obviously sides like corn and beets are just solid choices that complement any entree. going back each season in hopes to discover new flavors and dishes. not TOO often as it still is really far.

Excellent food

By BreeOttawaCanada |

Had a bit of a hard time too find because we took the subway and then walked: not recommend! However what a nice surprise when we arrived. We loved the casual and friendly atmosphere. The food was amazing, especially the squash side dish. Had a great time and even met some interesting people.

Hidden Gem

By TreeAtlanta |

Just across the Brooklyn Bridge is a great little funky restaurant called the Vinegar Hill House located at 72 Hudson Avenue. We had eaten there once for Sunday brunch and were very pleased so we went back a couple of months later for dinner. It's not much to look at from the outside and a little rustic on the inside but the food is excellent. It's small so I would suggest reservation as it seems to turn but is always full at the 8:00 dinner hour. We ordered the chicken liver mousse topped with pistachios appetizer which was delicious! Could have eaten two with no problem. We ordered the veal short rib which would be my choice again as well as the Mezze Maniche/ pork ragu'. Both meals were outstanding. They do have a 8? Seat bar and a small outside area if you have to wait.

Great cornbread. Great simple food

By terry h |

We had a family dinner. Everyone enjoyed the dinner. Great food. Most popular was cornbread, smooth, moist, and light. Too bad we couldnt find recipe in cookbooks. We found a recipe for cast-iron cooked chicken that was really good. I ordered tile fish on the menu. Waitress came back later with "no tile fish, but pike". A bit annoying. Didnt they know when they showed the menu? Pike was good, a little small serving. But, of course, quite unlike the texture of tile fish. We walked from York St metro station. The restaurant is located in a warehouse area. We called cab afterwards.

A great day in Dumbo

Great place for lunch. Very cozy and friendly atmosphere. Very nice patio. Avacado toast and beetroot salad was so good.

Best pork on the planet

By D P |

The menu is limited here but you can't go wrong with the pork chop. Absolute perfection. Top quality meat grilled to just the right temperature. The rillette appetizer was excellent too, although more of a pork pate in style. The pear and fennel salad was surprisingly good. Others had pasta and chicken, all of which were fine, but the chop was the star of the table. Go and eat pork.

I both loved and hated the experience for very different reasons

By professah13 |

I saw Frank Bruni dine at the Vinegar Hill House on the Food Network's The Best Thing I Ever Ate and it convinced me I too had to try their Red Waddle Pork Chop. It was truly spectacular, the best pork chop I've ever eaten. The setting of the restaurant was very interesting, an odd semi-deserted neighborhood with few other restaurants around. The service was attentive. The problem I had was with their wine policy. I wanted a Pinot Noir so I could have pork while my wife had a meat pasta dish. The least expensive bottle of Pinot Noir on the menu was $76. It annoys me when restaurants offer only wines so expensive they dwarf the food expense. I chose instead a $12 glass of Pinot Noir and it arrived in a thick glass cup that resembled an upscale jelly jar. Tasting it I couldn't even tell it was Pinot Noir. Despite the great pork chop the wine disappointment managed to spoil my meal. I wish more restaurants would go with stemware that enhances the taste of the wine rather that picking something less likely to break in the dishwasher.

Simply outstanding

By nw05250 |

OUTSTANDING in every aspect. The food was delightful, the ambience just perfect, and the setting wonderful. To top off a perfect evening the waiter we had, Monica, was simply brilliant. She was informed, professional, discreet, engaging and just very very good at her job. Would be great to be able to take her service to every restaurant we ever eat in. And to round it off, she is left handed ! Will definitely be re-visiting when we are next in NYC.

Love at first smell!

By 316Erica73 |

My mother and I had stopped in after church for some dinner today. We were out of town and when I say that I mean right over the GWB in Jersey, where there are many amazing restaurants. The smell first walking in was delightful. The dimly lit dining area and the calm music was another plus. Everything was fresh and tasted wonderful. I had the tagliatelle and she had the cast iron skillet chicken. We shared the buckwheat cake topped with mint, rhubarb, mint and vanilla custard. Kudos to the kitchen staff for putting out such good food in such a tight spot. This is a must stop. I highly recommend it and trust me, I eat out everywhere! Enjoy!!!

Amazing atmosphere, disappointing food

By MarianneL81 |

We were recommended this restaurant and came with high expectations. We were not disappointed, when entering the restaurant. Our group of four ordered starters and main courses. The starters were good but then the disappointments began: The risotto was overly salty, oily and display very bland. For 20-something dollars you would have expected more effort. The chicken dish had two pieces of chicken of which the other piece of meat was badly cooked. Or we were not sure if it was still raw or just bad meat. It was not obvious that you should order sides and the waiter did not clarify this either. So the chicken dish just included two pieces of chicken and caramelised onion. The post-dinner coffee was a rock bottom - bitter coffee served from a thermos. I really wanted to like this restaurant for its nice ambience and decor but I have to say that price and quality did not meet. If I'd come again, it would not be for food but maybe for drinks and cheese/charcutier.

Busy but attentive.

By Peter L |

When we got there we thought we would be turned away, it looked so busy. NO, there are little hidden nooks. The staff were great, the Riesling (French grand cru) great value. My halibut. (Always wanted to try that) was a tiny serve. Call it art on a plate, but strangely satisfying. My wife's ox tail was not what we expected, but it was a great dish, mostly pasta and a little main ingredient, beef. But amazing flavour and ultimately satisfying. The glass (3 of them) of red to follow, was extremely over priced at 17 dollars a glass. Overall.? A good night......we may go back..... But maybe we'll have a drink first.

Great Little Restaurant

By Staff61 |

We were lured here by the pate. Heard it was great so we decided to drop in for a drink and pate……. ended up staying for dinner. Shared the pate, octopus, cast iron chicken and sweet potato. All of the dishes were great and the service was outstanding. Suggest giving this place a try if your in Brooklyn

Wonderful dinner. The cast iron chicken is to die for and the waitstaff was very friendly. Fun night

Radicchio is NOT Endive...and PLEASE don't tell me it is!!!

By BurgessMeredith |

Vinegar Hill House has a wonderful inviting visual appeal. Old fashioned and cozy, especially the lower level with the beamed ceiling and fireplace. That's where it ends. Super slow service. Although the food was tasty..for the price, the portions were incredibly small. And they came with nothing...so side, no vegetable...nothing. Everything must be ordered separately, which is not immediately obvious. But I think the weirdest and most unsettling issue was that fact that two of us ordered Endive Salad. When our salads were served to us, we were shocked to see it was not endive at all...but radicchio. Obvious red and white leaves of radicchio!!! We pointed it out to our server, who assured us it was endive (but it wasn't endive at all!!!!). Then when our waitress arrived, we again pointed out that it was radicchio and not endive....and she demanded that it was endive (but it wasn't endive at all!!!!). And the waitress was not very friendly to begin with and completely lacked personality! We all would have been fine if the kitchen had run out of endive and switched it out with radicchio and if we had been alerted ahead of time....but for two of the staff to say without question that what we were served was actually radicchio and not endive was insane and insulting. If I had had a few more of the expensive beers, perhaps I would have insisted I speak with the chef. Tried it once, food tasted fine, but the bad taste the experience left in my mouth was more than enough for me.

Hidden Gem on the Fringe of DUMBO

By memarvel |

Walking down Hudson Street to Vinegar Hill House feels like you've been time-shifted into the 19th century (and to complete the picture walk up the hill to the Admirals House, a spectacular 19th century mansion overlooking the Navy Yards, and where the Admiral of the Navy once lived). Seating is tight, as tables are close together and unless you're on the patio out back or in the intimate section downstairs you're basically squeezing into a floor-through storefront apartment with a long bar and open kitchen behind it. But you know right away you're in a place where at least half the people surrounding you are neighbors and the new money DUMBO douchebags rarely venture the half mile or so to Vinegar Hill from the bridges so you can share the intimate warmth of an as-yet-unspoiled neighborly haunt (the kind of place that's getting harder and hard to find in Brooklyn). In fact before the DUMBO boom this was the place VH residents could call almost exclusively their own (it's only in the last year that the restaurant has started accepting reservations for parties smaller than six - used to be you'd see a line outside forming about a half hour before they opened in the evenings. And it's worth waiting for. Especially the rich but not heavy, heavenly food - from the Cast Iron Chicken, Red Wattle Country Chop and - oh, you have to order at least one Cornbread. It may be one of the greatest things you'll ever eat. And when you're done take a stroll up Evans Street till you reach the huge iron gates of the Admiral's Mansion, with the cars from the 1950s lining the long driveway inside and one of the most spectacular examples of Federal Era architecture imaginable. This is what it used to feel like to live in a real New York neighborhood.

Like being in the northwest vis a vis DUMBO

By Dave |

I'd heard great things about this place for years, and felt I needed to see and feel the rave reviews for myself, and the accolades are well-deserved. The vibe is distinctively inviting and convivial, unlike most hyped NYC restaurants. The menu is not large but offers a nice variety, from risotto to charcuterie to beef brisket and the famous skillet chicken. All delicious, but the homemade cornbread is kind of a big deal in and of itself.

Very good food, but why no affordable dry sparkling wine?

By Riddoch88 |

Dined here twice recently including set dinner for Thanksgiving. Food was delicious, particularly the red wattle chop and the cast iron chicken, so too the obligatory turkey on our second visit. What amazed us - was the lack of a simple dry sparkling wine by either glass or bottle e.g. a prosecco, cava or simple new world dry sparkling. The choices they had were either two top dollar champagnes, a semi sweet option from Greece or some floral wine from I forget where. When we queried the waiter, she suggested my wife should try the apple cider - Seriously?? Their sommelier (assuming they have one) needs to do some thinking.

LOVELY FATHER'S DAY BRUNCH

By Goldenbluize |

This rustic gem in a beautiful surrounding neighborhood was such a refreshing change from the usual busy brunch atmosphere. It is situated on a quiet block on the cobble stone streets of Old Brooklyn. Service was amazing and the atmosphere was uber relaxing. There is a garden for sitting out back, but we chose inside because it was a hot sunny day. Reservations seemed to be such a big deal but we got there half hour early and were seated immediately. I would definitely go back for dinner. I didn't like the lox that came with the eggs benedict so I ordered the omelette with the greens instead and it was delicious. Our waiter was nice enough to change my Sherry for a Savignon Blanc after I told him that I didn't like it. My husband and son enjoyed themselves; we never felt rush or hurried. The tables were a little small (if I would change anything, they would be larger - we were three and we felt crammed. After our brunch, we strolled the neighborhood which was very nice. Totally recommend this place.

An Absolute GEM!

By CM11717 |

We arrived early and spent time at the bar with Paul before sitting for dinner. We felt so welcomed by everyone we encountered that it felt they were truly glad to see us. Paul was a great host, was engaged and fun and introduced me to Monkey Shoulder Scotch - Yum. Dinner as well was just delicious ! We all ordered something different and no one left a single thing on their plate. Do Not Miss the Guinness Chocolate Cake for dessert. Seriously, one of the best chocolate cake desserts I've ever had. They never made us feel rushed to flip our table which is a huge issue for me. If I lived closer, I'd be a regular here - I'm just sorry I did not beg for the recipe for that cake! Be sure to eat here and enjoy!

A gem worth visiting

Walk Brooklyn bridge and go to Vinegar Hill House for lunch or brunch! Courteous service, fantastic sandwiches and burgers, side potatoes to kill for... And the price is right too! (but let me be clear: this is not a fancy restaurant)

The food was AMAZING!

By Donna F |

We loved Vinegar Hill, the food was absolutely amazing! You must try the pork chop and the cornbread! They were incredible! The outside area was very nice also, we went on a beautiful night. Although the service was a bit slow, the friendliness and the quality of the food was great. The drinks from the bar were very good, but the bartender could've been more attentive to her guests at the bar. I gave it a 5 star because of the atmosphere and the quality and amazing flavor of the food! I will def be back

wonderful- wonderful

The best pancake I ever had. Go for brunch early. Be there by 10:50 am. You can quickly be seated and enjoy a very special meal.

Very good

By Gunz |

A group of us were looking for a place to eat and to get out of the rainy day, and found this place. Very spacious and the food was much better than expected. Prices were reasonable, especially for place that has healthy food (organic, grass fed, etc).

Out of the park!!!

By Claire B |

Wow! What a killer dinner we had at Vinegar Hill House. We started with charcuterie - home made, of course. Moved on to the roast chicken (someone else was ordering or I'd never have tried that). It was scrumptious. We also had a pasta dish and the squash side. Everything was super tasty, the service was perfect and the atmosphere was cozy/exciting. I loved this place.

Very good local restaurant

By PrinceConsort |

Zagat says this place is a "hipster magnet," but that was not our experience. On a recent Sunday night it was full of just regular, but not particularly hip looking, Brooklyn types. Very much a neighborhood place. Small, attractive, friendly, somewhat funky, and hard to find unless you knew where you were going. In an old part of Brooklyn that is rapidly being gentrified...warehouses being replaced by new apartment buildings. The food was excellent, and the service was OK. A very pleasant experience.

Hipster Heaven

By MTRA |

The food is terrific, a range of dishes that go from interesting and off beat flavor combinations to straight forward dishes raised to a classic status by the quality of the ingredients and the skill of the preparation. Nice funky space, charming to the point of pretentious but not quite going over the line. Absolutely, without a doubt, if you're a carnivore order the pork chop, the flavor is as good if not better than any other restaurant meat dish I've ever had. Wine list has lots of choices in the $30 - $40 range with some pretty eclectic bottles to choose from. And if you come when it's cold ask to be seated downstairs by the fire place, it's like you're suddenly in that mythical cabin in the country that just so happens to have brilliant food coming out of the kitchen. On the down side, it's in the middle of nowhere, not easy to get to with not a whole lot else in the neighborhood to see or do. The reason that matters is because they don't take reservations, at least not for small parties, and the wait for a table on weekends can easily exceed an hour and so if you come during a rush be prepared to wait. And wait. And wait, as you stand crowded around the bar enviously watching (and hopefully not elbowing) the lucky patrons who are eating at the table six inched away from you. Avoid that problem by coming during the week or showing up fifteen minutes before they open. And yes, when you do get seated make sure you order the pork chop.

Quaint setting and excellent food!

By lisacM3464TQ |

We had a lovely dinner on the back patio. The restaurant has a lot of charm and the food was excellent - cast iron chicken and cornbread were phenomenal as was the pork chop. (Note: hate to mention anything negative about this place because it was so good, but even though it was late September the mosquitos were in full swing, so recommend bug spray before you go, or eat inside instead.) We enjoyed walking the neighborhoold as well - beautiful architecture and old brick streets.

Great vibe and excellent food!

By darmstro56 |

The four of us ate there and all really enjoyed the experience. Even though the menu was small all of our choices were excellent, both the mains and the sides. The pork seemed to be the overall favourite. Great drinks as well.

Sweet restaurant!

By Jo R |

Nice small restaurant in Brooklyn. You should have reservations. Food was great, it was a bit noisy. there is outside seating that looks nice in warm weather.

Charming!

By Voyage8082 |

Delicious food, attentive service and fascinating location. After reading Manhattan Beach, I am fascinated by the life of the navy yard, this location will bring you back to the past. Walk around before or after dinner, check the Captain’s house and the street is all cobblestones....the six of us wanted to share instead of having our own meal, our server was the most helpful with guiding us with her recommendations. Portions are generous, the pork item most delicious and copious.....the restaurant is small and I suspect a reservation is necessary, can’t wait to visit again.

Excellent Brunch in Brooklyn

By BenBostic |

Found this place while on a long, birthday weekend get away in DUMBO. Very convenient walk from my accommodations, so I wanted to give it a try based on location, reviews, and menu. It didn't disappoint. Everything I tried was delicious and the service was friendly & attentive. I highly recommend it for brunch if you're convenient to Brooklyn. I'd also recommend arriving close to opening as it can fill up quickly.

Amazing Food

By shel29Brooklyn |

This is a small restaurant with a nice ambiance. You would miss it if you were walking by, it is understated. They have a small menu of unusual items, and what we had was delicious. Our cocktails, a Vinegar Hill and a Paper Tiger, were thoughtfully prepared and delicious, not sweet as so many cocktails are. We had the chicken liver mousse for an appetizer, and the sea trout and the red wattle country chop (their signature dish) as entrees. Both were amazing. The corn bread was to die for. We also ordered the brussels sprouts as a side. It was plenty to eat, I had lunch on the trout the following day. The wine was underwhelming, but the dessert, chocolate Guiness cake, was surprisingly light and tasty without being cloyingly sweet. Service was efficient and attentive. I enjoyed everything, and will go back.

Just okay

By Tita Elvie |

I was super excited to try this spot as I heard the pancakes were amazing. I visited and the pancakes were okay. They are definitely not the best ones in NYC and are pretty expensive, but the vibe of the place is cute, especially the back yard and the service was good.

Gourmet Food in Lowkey neighborhood

By Betsy C M |

Reservations for 8 of us. Location of restaurant is in an unassuming neighborhood of Vinegar Hill. In fact you will need gps to find front door as there is no large sign. Inside you find an eclectic, classy, cozy environment with attentive wait staff. We enjoyed delicious nonalcoholic drinks, Ordered delicious charcuterie tray, salads, cast iron chicken dishes. Pace of food served was slow enough to enjoy conversation and each course. We sat inside but the outdoor patio in the back looked beautiful.

Always flawless

By KatGD |

We moved to Brooklyn recently and this is one of our most favorite restaurants. Our friends who live in Brooklyn introduced us to it at a welcome back dinner and it has continued to dazzle ever since. We have been there for brunch on a Sunday and a couple of dinners as well and Vinegar Hill House never disappoints. The food is fresh, perfectly prepared and incredibly delicious, usually with a special flavor that will catch me off guard in a really interesting way. The service is always fantastic and the wine/cocktail menu is the perfect complement to an amazing meal. It's a great atmosphere, whether you're in the main bustling dining room (that is understandably always packed) or in the beautiful garden out back. I do not know how they manage to cook up such a spectrum of fabulous food in that teeny kitchen but I'm grateful that they do and look forward many more meals there!

An all time favorite until..

By Mark F |

VHH has been an all time favorite for many years, the tucked away place always serving up a amazing dishes and drinks with an almost to cool a vibe until... the most recent visit started going down the 'Vinegar' Hill almost from the the moment we arrived. The waiter was over the top surly and disinterested. We placed our order which included two $11 ciders, however when the glasses arrived we thought it was a joke - glasses only a touch larger than shot glasses and yes, for $11 each. what the....!!!! and to top this off we were actually charged $14 per glass which led to another run in with the surly waiter to get it reduced to the original price of $11.. My review gets 4 stars as the food was spectacular but alas, food alone cannot win the day and after many years of being trusted supporters of VHH we'll be seeking out a new place for our monthly friends dinner. Please try this place but expect to pay high and leave thirsty!

Eclectic and off the beaten track

By KDKtn |

Vinegar Hill is not easy to find for non-New Yorkers. We even had to direct the cabbie by phone GPS. Locate it, we did, however. Like many neighborhood venues, the restaurant is small and was crowded. Reservations are certainly a good idea. The menu was focused with locally sourced items, all of high quality. We started with a radish based dish with toast -very good. Our party of tried the manicotti, gnocchi, and pork chop. Pork chop appeared to be the winner. I had the manicotti. While, good it was pork based and with a strong flavor - interesting but not my favorite. The wine list was international with several old world wines. We had a Viognier to start that was quite nice and a 2001 Rioja that was very nice. Sorry, I don't recall the producers but both were in the $50-$68 range. One to try but among so many choices...

Wonderful Mother's Day Brunch

By Cindy S |

Have been trying to get into Vinegar Hill House for some time now and when I knew I'd be spending Mother's Day in NY, made a reservation for brunch. We were luck to be there on an absolutely beautiful spring day and got to enjoy brunch in their outdoor garden. Food was excellent, we even chose to share the strawberry pancakes amongst the 4 of us for starters. I had a Lobster Benedict that was delicious as were all the dishes we ordered. Beautiful little spot in Vinegar Hill and easy walk to DUMBO and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Don’t judge this book by its cover

By Nbiagiarelli |

When the uber dropped us outside I was certain this was a mistake, there was nothing around it, some buildings were boarded up. When you step inside it’s a whole new world. I love the funky design pieces and copper bar. Everyone was very friendly and accommodated our request to sit in the back garden for brunch. We sat under a cherry tree in the beautiful little garden and enjoyed the most delicious brunch. The coffee was excellent. We shared the blueberry sourdough pancake and the eggs Benedict. Both were excellent but the sourdough pancake was my favorite. We will definitely return on our next trip!

Dinner with Family

I had a spent the day shopping with my son's girlfriend and my husband and son had been to the NYJets game so dinner at Vinegar Hill was a perfect way to end the day. Excellent food, good service and I loved the quirky location too. Thank you all at Vinegar Hill House. I will be back!

VHH Another Great Meal

By David B |

Haven’t been back in two years, as we live 2 blocks away. A close friend in town this was the perfect spot for dinner. We were escorted right away to the table in the nook to the right, which was perfect as well. Great service and the menu offerings were somewhat similar to what they produce for years. Can’t wait to go back again.

Go with a group

By JulesVerne1 |

A small menu but well chosen dishes from quite a good kitchen. Strangely, bread was mediocre but butter (fresh, unsalted) quite good. Had a lamb neck special - long, slow cooked to succulence over white beans. Nice going. Wine list pricey but good choices. Gets pretty loud when they turn up the absolutely unnecessary background music - some has bought into the theory that loud = buzz. No reservations but if you come before they open they wil let you hang out at the place next door and call you for the first table.

Hadn't been here in a year or two but had really enjoyed our previous visits. We're disappointed this time. We arrived as the place opened - only 3 other parties but it took 25 minutes to get a drink. Service was very poor and slow. Menu is very limited but excellent. That said my husband was very disappointed in his chicken dish. Prices are quite steep. Not worth it. steep for

Perfect for pre-theater

By Mai M |

What a quaint little restaurant with a creative menu and oh so perfect for dinner if you happen to have tickets for a show at Saint Ann’s Warehouse Theater. Everything we ordered from the cavatelli with pesto to the Red Wattle country chop and cast iron chicken was flavorful. Scallop was the market fish of the evening and it certainly did not disappoint except in the portion size which could have been a bit more generous. More of an appetizer size than a full entree. Luckily we supplemented with 2 orders of the amazing polenta cornbread served with honey butter. The consistency was creamy & the taste was divine. There was no need for dessert! In fact we would go back just to eat it again.

Brunch By The Fireplace

By David B |

Just returned home (2 blocks away) from VHH after having Brunch in their cozy basement which had an old fireplace. Have been coming since it opened many years ago. My daughter only had bacon as she just got her braces recently, I had their egg sandwich w/ bacon (a must) with a side of roasted potatoes and my wife has their eggs and tomato (sorta like eggs chilaquiles but not spicy) with their sausage nuggets yum. Great service and yummy food. The Fireplace room is very cozy and you should ask for it.

Nasty New Year's Eve

By SherrieS |

I have eaten at Vinegar Hill House on another occasion and had an excellent meal, otherwise I would give this place 1 star. New Year's Eve here was awful. It was crammed full of people. Wait service was surly and non existent. The food was absolutely awful. My friend paid $20 extra for truffles on his dish and it was embarrassing. The restaurant must have thought the customers had never eaten truffles. The truffles were dried and tasteless. Six of us ordered the steak selection and we all hated it. The steak was so tough it was difficult to cut with a steak knife! Based on this abysmal evening, I will not return to this restaurant.

Maybe the best and try the basement

By Val W |

We have always adored this restaurant. We travel all over the world and it is simply the best. It was filled tonight and they asked if we would mind dining in the basement. The basement turns out to be the original building from colonial times bathed in candlelight with a roaring fire going on. We liked it better than upstairs. Val Wilson

Best pancakes ever!!!

By Carlos T |

It's really worth the trip to Brooklyn. Particularly their delicious pancakes! I think is one of my favorite places for brunch :-)

No style, no substance.

By OdysseusHerts |

To say we were disappointed is an understatement. The restaurant may be considered trendy if that's a euphemism for shabby. We started with the full charcuterie board, the meats were average, but scant, the cheeses, however were very good. Our main courses were substantial but lacked real character. We had dessert, the Guiness chocolate tasted of neither. Our waiter seemed determined that we finish our first bottle quickly, presumably so we would have a second, there is attentive service and there is over-bearing. I have eaten far better for far less, not good value for money.

Perfect food with an odd vibe - a hidden gem

By marcbanting |

It has a strange vibe, but it's definitely a hidden gem. Outside seating is in a walled courtyard but the reason to go is to eat: The food was really delicious and they were generous with the portion sizes Spiced monkfish - delicious

I am moving across the bridge just to be closer to Vinegar Hill House!

By HughK1 |

As you wend your way through Dumbo it is clear that there is a lot going down in this neighborhood. Cool, sassy, beat down, crumbly pavement under foot beautiful brownstones awaiting the love this is a cool place for sure. VHH epitomizes cool Brooklyn - a small eclectic space, upstairs and downstairs and a garden outside. Über cool cocktails, cramped together watching the minuscule kitchen rolling out plates of awesome food from the wood fired oven waiting for our table. We ended up downstairs beside the lovely open fire, it's cold out, lots of red wine - pork chop, lamb ragout, trout all good. After a couple of class Old Fashioned's at the bar we are in for the long haul. Well worth the trip and you may just end up staying!

Fair Food, Uncomfortable Setting, Bad Value

By happygourmand |

I am afraid I cannot add my voice to the chorus of praise. The pleasure here is to find a restaurant in the middle of nowhere; it does not extend very much to the food. A full brunch for two easily reaches $100, but is no better than what you might find at your average neighborhood spot. Dinner guests (I infer) get a wonderful linen napkin; the brunch crowd can expect only a thin paper one, which easily flutters off you lap. On a positive note, service is quite pleasant.

Bad Service

By Tomtomty |

We tried a walk in; VERY bad idea! They told us 1 hour to wait after two hours still nothing! The staff was not friendly and did not care about us. Finally we decided to leave without eating

Simply great dining experience

By nw05250 |

Simply a great restaurant. Great food, great service from Monika, and great atmosphere. Would definitely recommend a meal be taken here.

One tricky place to find . . . one brilliant place for food

By DRE262 |

One our way to see a show at St. Ann's Warehouse, (and being an out-of-towner), I had no clue where to find a pre-show meal. Fortunately, the Warehouse website offered a few suggestions. But, again, never having been to that part of Brooklyn--EVER--I was still clueless. But, following the advice of the folks at St. Ann's, I made reservations at this totally unassuming hideaway. Best move I've made online in a long time!!! The food was fabulously simple--yet tasty! The staff was amazing--getting us on our way to the theater on time! And the atmosphere was everything you'd want in a tucked-away neighborhood cafe'. I'd consider a move to the area just to have this place as my local bar/restaurant. Thank you for a great evening!!!!

Disappointing!

By michael b |

Our daughter visited a month ago and was so excited to take us back. Everyone was disappointed with their meal. Our waitress gave the impression we were imposing on her. We also thought the place lacked cleanliness; the cleaning staff missed the bathroom and my silverware missed the dishwasher.

Worth trip from Manhattan

By PhilKennedy |

I was in Brooklyn anyway that day and I'm glad I stayed on the other side of the river for dinner. It's a characterful little neighbourhood restaurant and it felt like a relaxed local crowd. Very hospitable and the food was enjoyable. I thought the chocolate Guinness cake was a bit cakey for a restaurant dessert, but I can't say I was mislead by the name!

Good food in a total wilderness.

By annbury |

This place is impossible to find; when dining there recently, I went the wrong way and my wife, whose sense of direction is great, said so but I kept on going. Finally, we jumped into a cab and 5 minutes later we were there. There was nobody in the place when we got there and we told them we had to go to St Ann's Theater by 7:30. The place was jammed when we left ( a Wednesday evening in November) and the directions were correct but stupid; you make two lefts and in about a half hour you are at your destination. My wife had a fall salad, which was some kind of root vegetable thing served warm and a small plate of tagliatelle, both of which were great. I had an apple salad which was nothing but apples but this wonderful dressing and a skillet chicken, which was covered with onions and garlic and was hotter than anything but good. We skipped dessert because we could not afford the time so we left.

Cute Spot and Great Atmosphere

By Ashley B |

Visited this gem a week ago when looking for a brunch spot after visiting the Brooklyn Flea. Although there was not room in the actual restaurant, I was shown to a back courtyard that was perfect. The brunch menu is not very large, I will say, but ordered a "French" Omelette that was supposed to come with Ricotta, Mushrooms and Spinach. They forgot the mushrooms, which wasn't a big deal because I was in a rush and didn't have time to wait around for them to make a new dish. I also ordered a side of jalapeno fingerling roasted potatoes that were amazing. It was a bit pricey, but all brunch in New York is pricey. I would definitely go back!

Great in every way!

By vimatravel |

From start to finish Vinegar Hill House is a fantastic experience. The service is smart and friendly. The menu is limited but includes all ... meat , poultry , seafood and pasta . The cocktails are expertly crafted with a nice wine list . The space is casual and comfortable. I'm looking forward to my next visit ! There's a lovely outdoor space out back .

Great Meal

By Stump F |

4 of us went for dinner. This place was a little off the beaten path...several blocks from DUMBO area. We all had spicey green salads to start.....a very generous portion of greens for a side salad. We had the duck liver mousse as an appetizer...very good!! Had a slightly sweet taste and just very yummy. For our entrees, I had the short ribs. There were 2 meaty ribs, which was a pleasant amount. My wife had the garganelli pasta..she really enjoyed it. The other couple had the garganelli and chicken dish, which both said they really enjoyed. The restaurant had a very nice looking outside area for eating if you would prefer...we choose inside. The waiters were very attentive to our needs. Overall, a very nice, but expensive meal at 170.00 for 4.

Loved

By ShakeUtah |

Very cool vibe and great food. A little tricky to get to, but worth it. It's in a strange area that almost seems residential and like there is nothing happening. Once the doors open, it's like walking into a movie scene or hidden oasis of life, great smells, and merriment.

Food And service adequate; Attitude abysmal

By originalbluefrog37 |

Let me begin with the food. It was pleasantly prepared, though our appetizer arrived after the main course. That said, I have have eaten at many restaurants in Brooklyn where the food is at least as good if not superior to the Vinegar Hill House. The real issue was that we were made to feel unwelcome by the staff. On arrival, we were asked if we had a reservation. When we said that we did not, that seemed to be a major issue, even though the place was barely half full. We were invited to sit at the bar (which was full) or wait outside (essentially an invitation to leave, given the rest of our experience). The bar opened up and we sat down, only to have the bartender spend five minutes polishing glasses without even making eye contact. Staff came and went, also without eye contact. Eventually, I stood up, in a position where I could not be ignored, and we were shown to a small table in the corner. The wait staff arrived promptly and took our order, which also arrived promptly, though no one stopped by to check on the meal or see if we wanted our drinks refilled. The restaurant never filled completely while we were there, and there were three or four empty tables when we left. My sense of the place: If you are a 30-something hipster, they want your business. If you are older than that (and we are), they would prefer that you not trouble them with your presence. I will gladly accommodate that preference.

Delightful Surprise

By booradleysx |

This restaurant is a hidden gem on a quiet, cobbled street in Vinegar Hill. The staff were all friendly, welcoming, knowledgeable, and attentive. Tables and chairs were comfortable, and the shabby chic decor reflected Vinegar Hill's history. There's outdoor seating in a back garden when weather permits. All of our starters and entrees were delicious. We had pasta and chicken from the menu and a fish addition to the menu. Portions were good-sized. Opted to share the Guinness cake for dessert--fantastic! Fun music was audible but didn't overwhelm conversation. Looking forward to a return visit.

Charming setting but disappointing delivery.

By Andy M |

From the outside, in a quite neighbourhood of Brooklyn, just beyond DUMBO, this had all the promise of a quite bistro favoured by locals. From a limited menu and wine list by the glass, all looked good. The customer experience however was not. Although the staff were friendly and attentive, the choice of background music was more foreground than you might have hoped. Punk at loud decibels largely prohibits any form of communication (other than by txt) and does little to relax the gullet. The grilled octopus was tender and the aioli delicious, but an enthusiastic sprinkling of uncooked rosemary leaves was more decorative than edible. Poached Halibut was sadly dry and over cooked with bitter charred sprouts adding to the concern. It looked so good on paper but just didn’t deliver. With the location and soft lighting one gets the impression that this restaurant should be great. If only it thought more about the customer delivery rather than staff entertainment it certainly could be. Overall a bit of a let down but worth a visit.

Hidden Gem!

By Susan B |

Don't let the outside fool you...this place is great! Excellent food and service. Love the ambiance. Outdoor seating as well. Highly recommend!

Beyond disappointing

By RosaRosa432 |

We had to wait 40 minutes to get our order to the table, the toasts were cold, the omelette was runny (literally watery egg batter on the plate), the pancake dough was raw (one side of the pancake was burnt (black) and the dough inside was uncooked), the manager argued with us.... Need I say more?

Country style cooking in a quaint space

By Skych8ser |

What a pleasant surprise. We ordered the following all of which was excellent: Cast Iron Chicken Roasted octopus Chicken liver mouse Wild mushrooms, green garlic and egg - my favorite of all Cornbread maple butter jalapeño and honey cornbread - best cornbread I've ever had, but don't expect it to be spicy (only disappointment) as you cannot taste the jalapeño.

Average

By piaHongKong |

A friend highly recommended here! Full of people during dinner time! Need reservation in advance. Interior decoration is average. Very strong oily smell in the restaurant! Waitress is no very pleasant! The glasses had very strong detergent smell! Food is average! Price is average!

Farm to table at it Best

There wasn't a part of the meal that I didn't enjoy. The flavors were artfully and thoughtfully put together for each and every dish. Wow.

Wonderful & Quaint

Wonderful little restaurant and bar. We meet up with 3 other friends and had a great dinner. I had the whole trout and it was delish!

Tip-top brunch in a homey setting

By Scott M |

We stopped here midday Sunday for brunch. Plenty of outdoor seating, but all taken; we were the sole indoor diners. We had typical brunch food: an omelette, bacon, toast, potatoes, greek yogurt, fresh juices. The menu is not large, but each of these things was perfectly made. We also had their house-made Bloody Marys, which were well into "best of breed" territory. Good, friendly service, good food, great value.

Brooklyn Brunch

By Megan G |

I found this after walking over the Brooklyn bridge and needed somewhere for a drink and warm up. I sat at the bar as it was busy, 1130 on a Sunday morning, I ended up having the pear sourdough pancakes with bacon. It was great, the pancake was very light and the bacon chunky and cooked to perfection. My coffee cup was refilled regularly without having to ask. Reasonably priced for brunch. I noticed they had a small enclosed court yard to the rear which would be great when the weather gets warmer.

One if the best dinners ever!

By Terry S |

Went here based on reviews and loved it! When we arrived people were waiting outside, always a good sign. Butternut squash toast appetizer was delicious. 3 of us had the Red Wattle, one had a pasta with eggplant ragu. The Red Wattle is phenomenal!!! We all agreed one of the best meals we've ever had. Definitely recommend.

Cosy, at home feel and great food

By Sandhya S |

We went to the Dumbo arts festival in Brooklyn, which turned out to be a mixed bag. After a long day of walking, we walked into this place which had a very laid back relaxed feel. The service was attentive and friendly. The Hungarian white wine we ordered was good. Finally, we had ordered all the starters and sides. The grilled veg with the curry sauce was superb and also the dressing for the mixed salad. The food menu is small but interesting. They have a large selection of wines by the glass. The location is a bit off the beaten track. But once you get in there, you leave satisfied.

Wonderful hidden gem

By nicole |

Found this hidden gem and so glad we did as it was the best breakfast we had our whole time visiting NYC! Really quirky and nice vibe inside, unique menu and the food was all absolutely delicious! Our waiter was fantastic too! Highly recommend and will definitely come back next time visiting NYC!

Too cool for school

By Dinah P |

Admittedly we arrived late. The restaurant was half full but we were tucked away in a side corner which was boarded on both sides which wasn't great. I thought this was a bit mean given that the main restaurant was pretty empty. I wasn't asked if I wanted large or small portion of pancakes and a large arrived and of course I only ate half of it. We ate at a few off the beaten track places on our trip and this was the least friendly place we went to. This isn't a great vegetarian friendly place and I think they'd rather we hadn't come.

A gem in a food desert

By JADSNYC2014 |

This is a great place in an area where good places to eat are few and far between. The brunch was delicious. The service friendly. The ambiance was rustic and unpretentious. Although we discovered it because we had to be in the neighborhood for something else, I can see going to this restaurant, specifically, in the future. It has a lovely vibe and yummy food.

5 stars!

By Lydia C |

Love the vibe of this cozy place in the beautiful DUMBO neighborhood of Brooklyn. Very easy to get to from city on F train, and a nice scenic walk from the station to the place. My boyfriend and I went for drinks and a snack as our first stop of the night for his bday celebration. We both had the Vinegar Hill drink and it was outstanding. We also ordered the bread and butter....DELICIOUS. We sat at the bar and enjoyed the artistry of the bartender, as well as the chefs in the open kitchen with hearth oven. Definitely coming back here for drinks and dinner!

Disappointing

By Solidor |

Very nice atmosphere, excellent quality service, food very very average, cost misaligned. No, I would not suggest it.

Great food, great place, service needs finetuning

By Thomas N |

We had some delicious food here, standouts were the fresh and zesty softshell crab sandwich and the juicy perfectly cooked porkchops. Great selection of beer and wine also. The atmosphere was good, with a mixed crowd and people out to enjoy themselves. The only downside was our waiter, who seemed like he was doing us a favour the whole time, I don't think he really wanted to be there. But all in all it was a thoroughly enjoyable meal.

Hidden treasure of Brooklyn

By danmtslatter |

Amazing little place, hidden away. Great food, great atmosphere and great service. Feels like a community hub and has a real positive energy. All the dishes have a kind of southern twist. All really comforting, tasty but fresh feeling food! Would go back in a heartbeat when I'm next in town!

fun brunch

Walked across Manhattan bridge through this Brooklyn neighbourhood to meet an old friend and could NOT believe I had never been there. Loved the atmosphere, loved the food and loved to explore after. A must do.

Charming Neighborhood Restaurant

By Bu1985 |

Set amidst the charming row houses and cobblestone streets of the Vinegar Hill area of Brooklyn (DUMBO adjacent), the Vinegar Hill House Restaurant offers up wonderful food and an excellent, if slightly eclectic wine list too. The corn bread to start and the Guinness Chocolate Cake for dessert are not to be missed. The roast chicken and pork chop were cooked to perfection. Will be back for sure.

Vinegar Hill hits the heights

By Steve K |

This charming neighborhood spot, around the corner from Brooklyn's St. Anne's Warehouse Theater, is perfect for a pre-theater bite or a casual and relaxed dinner. Its rustic, no-nonsense interior, simple wine list and delicious menu--with something for carnivores or vegetarians alike--come together in a winning combination. Especially delicious: the kale Cesar salad.

Charming little brunch spot

By wanderluster74 |

So glad we found this place! We saw the front and were thinking we may have made a mistake but we were SO wrong. We sat on this cozy little patio in the back for brunch. The menu is interesting, not your typical brunch menu.... The pulled pork and grits were wonderful, The lamb special was outstanding as were the other dishes at our table. Order a pitcher of white sangria, we like it so much we had two :)

Best food ever and a true gem in the heart of our hometown. Very proud.

By PirateSixtyniyn |

It's something that I still look forward to every time I go back to NYC. The food is very delicious, the place is very clean and best of all the staff are very helpful. It's amazing. The ribs are to die for.

Loved it

By Todd R |

One of those eclectic interiors that feels authentic, not staged. I had a few of their signature crafted cocktails. Yum. I had the chicken on a piping hot skillet. Delicious and crispy. The creamy cornbread was outstanding. I went with three other people who loved it as well.

Creative culinary charisma

By AdomGadol |

Went for a Saturday brunch - definitely out of the way, definitely worth it. The coffee is amazing...just the coffee. The place is charming, great local vibe, super-solid service. But, as it should be, the food is the highlight. We were hard-pressed to choose, but the amazing special of scallion pancakes with green curry sauce and house-made beef sausages was a coup...as was the goat cheese, chestnut omelette though I can't wait to go back to try the biscuits and gravy. It was absolutely one of my favorite NYC meals ever.

Great Hidden BK spot!

By Tate M |

Still a (relatively) hidden gem in BK. Good date spot. One of the better pork chops around and great wine list.

Hidden away gem!

By Andrew S |

Tucked away behind the naval dock yards in a quite cobbled street is this delightful small restaurant with bags of character and charm. its a short walk out of Dumbo to get there and can be easily missed as there is no signage above the door! A great selection of delicious food and and interesting wine list. Friendly waiters, all very relaxed and casual.

Amazing!

By LolaSweden |

This little, cozy, hidden place is just amazing! I had the most exiting and probably the best breakfast ever. Not the usual kind of breakfast but very very unusual and great! Grits, omelette, been salad with poached eggs, all with the twist! Yes, it might be pricy but I will never forget it! Every bite was to remember! My husband and I were delighted both with the food and the service!

My favorite restaurant

By Hotel_Boy |

I am lucky to live around the corner from this place. The food is honest, good food. Watermelon Crab Soup is amazing. It is a must. We felt as if we were at il bulli for a moment. The drinks are creative, tasty, and awesomely named. Salted Caramel Custard is a must for dessert. If you don't get it, it will haunt your dreams. Pork chops are rare, and porky delicious. Amazing grits accompany. The pastas are always creative and new takes on classic flavors. People scythe love the chicken, but I say who eats chicken out? Enjoy the marrow bones or sweet breads, the difficult things you can't make at home. Here, the excel at it! Brunch is relaxed, tasty, and boozy. The Red Snapper vs. The Bloody Mary. It's a tough call. I promise. Crab omlette, sour dough pancake. No matter what you choose it will taste good. The menu changes often, but never disappoints. The roasted beets are worth sharing with the table. I am kinda shocked it's not in the top 10 in Brooklyn.

Just delicious food with creative cocktail

3 times at vinegar hill. Creative cuisine amazingly well cooked duck, pork & veggies. Great cocktail. Long wait

Pity about the service

By Elizabeth B |

Staying locally to visit family in Brooklyn who recommended this restaurant We are Australian and we’ll travelled Nice ambience but if you’re over 55 bring a torch - you won’t be able to read the menu Pleasant wait staff with good advice for a $80 bottle of white This was poured into each glass once then plonked on the table for us to help ourselves - it was a well heated restaurant so after an hour the wine was room temperature Not sure what Brooklyn expects of white wine delivery but we in Aus like it chilled and served as needed Water was served once and not refilled The bill was US $162 for one bread, one entree one side and one main which were good We have been told to tip in the US but measured to the service We left cash US $180 Not sure if this is considered value for money in Brooklyn ???? It’s not so in Australia

Absolutely Fabulous

By travelwriter |

This is a restaurant to go for the evening, not a quick bite. Incredible flavors, unique offerings, interesting setting. They were very accommodating to food allergies. Their signature chicken was out of this world. You do need a reservation.
