Good food

By Timothy R |

Outstanding meal great service nice young man. The drinks were outstanding. We had fajitas which were some of the best I had The rice was good just a very nice meal

Food was OK

By Jorge T |

Food was OK but the service was horrible. Place was dirty and the wait time was horrendous. We did like the food once it arrived but I think service needs to be vamped up. Alot.

Disappointing dinner...

By Martha Constant |

Everything came out wrong from the kitchen and they didn’t offer to fix the plates... mine was not supposed to have beans only rice and it came out with a trough of beans (I don’t have a gallbladder and told them I couldn’t eat beans). Husband’s steak was supposed to have a chipotle sauce and his came out dry and without his side of beans... our daughter’s steak was burnt and tasted like charcoal briquettes. When we came here a year ago the parking lot was full and there was zero room at 6pm and they had a 5star rating on here and on Google they had a 4.8/5 and we come this year it is 6:25pm and the lot is only about half full (if that) and their quality of food is poor.... What happened to this place??? We will never be back.

Family get together

By Bonita61 |

We had a family get together and although the ambience is beautiful, the service was terrible. There was only one bartender working and it took a long time to get a drink. Our group had reservations so it wasn't like they did not know how many of us would be attending. The food is not bad but it is a bit pricey and to add to this the service is terrible. We had to wait so long for our food and it was a weekday evening!

Our first visit didn't disappoint

By EvieDTX |

We decided to try this restaurant for the first time last night, and we were very pleased with the experience. We were told it would be a 30-40 minute wait for a table, so we sat at the bar and tried their michelada's while we waited. The wait only ended up being 20 minutes, so that was nice. We were seated at a booth in the main dining area which was packed with huge parties. Even though it was incredibly busy, our server (who also had one of the huge parties in her section) and especially Andres (who we believe is an expeditor) were very attentive, and made sure that we had everything we needed. Andres even took the time during a very busy evening to chat with us and make sure we felt welcome on our first visit. We really appreciated that. The food was great. My husband had the chili relleno dinner and loved it. I had the Carne Guisada, and it was delicious. We tried the Hacienda Mountain dessert, and it was huge (enough for 3-4 to split) and really good. Especially the buñuelo shell. That was delayed a bit in arriving, and when Andres realized it he quickly made ours himself and rushed it to our table. A nice extra touch. We loved the atmosphere of the restaurant. It was very clean and new and had great energy. Next time we plan to sit outside in the beautiful patio area. There are many mature trees out there, a bar and live music. We highly recommend this restaurant, and we'll be back soon.

The Lone Star of Texas

By Ruthie P |

Everything was delicious! We loved the puffy tacos. Steven was the best waiter with excellent service - friendly & very attentive. He was the star of this Restaurant as far as we were concerned. Enchiladas with the red/chili sauce was yummy. Salsa was spicy but tasty.

Always Hot and Delicious

By bears60 |

The food is always Hot and the service superb. Lisa our waitress is great. Restaurant is always very clean and everyone is so nice. The tortillas taste homemade. You will never be dissapointed.

Everything is delicious!

By Sarah E |

I ordered the fajitas for 2 and it came out sizzling hot! It's a plate full of tasty vegetables that match perfectly with the tender, full of flavor beef fajitas! The tortillas are soft, fluffy, and super delicious!!

Yummy!

By Suzie W |

What a great place! The service was friendly, lots of smiles. Viola herself came out to say hello and make sure our food was up to standards. The puffy taco and cheese enchilada was fresh, homemade and very yummy. I will go again and again!

Great patio with live music

By O3916TEjasonp |

Very needs nice atmosphere especially in the large outside patio that had live music. I would highly recommend the mojitos (made with fresh, hand picked mint) and the margaritas were also very good. Oh, the food was pretty good also (we had the shrimp stuffed chili relenos and some puffy tacos. Overall a very neat place

Little disappointing

By mericksonjr |

Outside nice inside letdown . Tried this place today. Outside is very nice and leads you to believe it would be very good. It was kind of a letdown inside. There is a lot of potential here but they seem to be missing something. What Mexican restaurant charges for chips and salsa? These guys do. Food was average. Jr our server did a great job. The bartender needs to learn how to make drinks the mint in my Mojito was not muddled and had dark spots on it. My wife asked for her beer dressed and they didn't pull the foil down off the top. Enchiladas were fair but not what you would expect for $20. I feel like with the number of Mexican Restaurants in San Antonio that these guys think they are more than they are. Competition is everywhere here and there are much better for less money. We will choose somewhere else next time.

Tuesday night lovely dinner with music!

By SpotTVMom |

We had a very nice dinner. Tuesday had a special on Fajitas for two. We tried the mixed plate of chicken and beef. The chicken was so yummy! We enjoyed our meal and the kids enjoyed their meal as well. We sat outdoors and at times I felt like the servers lagged a bit. We had to wait a bit but we did get all the parts to our meal that we needed.

Wonderful food and service !

By brrr48 |

We just spent a week in San Antonio and we ate at this restaurant on Wednesday, liked it so much we went back on Saturday ! We had chicken fajitas for two and chicken quesadillas at our table. Everyone was very happy with their dinners. The restaurant is clean and decorated nicely. Would be happy to go back there whenever I get back to Texas!

Exciting menu

By RcbMtb |

Being from California, it was a refreshing change of menu items, for a Mexican restaurant. Different items as well as different style of cooking. TexMex is entirely different than California. Shrimp stuffed Rellenos were Great. Five people ordered five different things, and all were happy with their selection.

good food

By caly mc |

Stayed at the Hilton down the road and we wanted to get some Mexican before we left town. It was very good, my husband had the bacon wrapped, pepper stuffed shrimp. It was a large plate so of course I had to steal a few shrimp, very yummy. Only downfall was not enough rice for the meal and they charged $2.50 for more rice. I had the chalupa Vallarta which was great, and a salad. The shredded lettuce for the salad was strange but the avocado, cheese and bacon on top made it great. I also had a San Antonio puffed taco, not a big fan, it was too greasy for my taste. All in all I would recommend this place and obviously it is a local favorite as the were several large parties there and a birthday party in a separate area.

Great

By Jerry F |

Awesome service every time, great family atmosphere. Eating inside or outside, with plenty of variety.

Beautiful restaurant w/friendly staff and Amazing food--loved it!

By Nikki W |

WE had shared fajitas (chicken and steak) and my kids had the Hailey dish and a vegetarian enchilada dish. We ordered the cheese appetizer that is similar to queso fundido without chorizo. It had the perfect amount of spice and the cheese was creamy and it was served with thick, fresh tortillas. My kids loved their food. There was a lot of meat provided for the money...impressed by that because so many restaurants are cheap with that. All the food was delicious. My only suggestion is that the fajitas come with shredded cheese, sour cream and more than a teaspoon of guac. It was disappointing, and by the time I could get my waiter's attention I was already half way through eating. I think shredded cheese and sour cream should either be standard or offered. The guac we did receive was just so small in the amount that it was barely anything to put in the fajita, but it was very good. I would have just appreciated more. Otherwise, this is an A++++ restaurant with excellent food, immaculate, beautiful decor, and friendly staff. I am visiting from out of town from Tucson, AZ and we pride ourselves on our Mexican food, but this was some really good Mexican food. High quality. Highly recommend. Will be back when we visit next year. I just wish I had room for dessert, the choices sounded delicious, but we were so full.

Family meal while at Wild Oak Ranch

By ashcaw |

Excellent food, friendly service, highly recommend for family! Puffy tacos and beef street tacos were a hit!

Nice place. Great service.

By Cris T |

It's a nice place to eat Mexican food. I got the queso with chorizo. It was ok. The flour tortillas are super good. The enchiladas are good. Don't ask for French fries. The servers are fast and the service is good.

Average at best. Chose Vila’s

By BarnScott |

Average at best. Chose Vila’s because it was close by and had 4 star reviews. I know it’s not the best time for restaurants. However the food was not very good and the service was less. Not many folks dining yet we constantly waited for someone to attend to our table. Most ordered enchiladas, they were ok. However there are thousands of Tex Mex restaurants that are better. I don’t see the food being better on another night. I wouldn’t recommend.

Average Mexican/Texmex

By Clevlander |

Nice place with a beautiful outdoor patio (worth asking for in the evening) with live oaks providing shade and a huge deck. The service was very slow and took close to 1 hr to get our orders and 1 hr for the food to arrive; so go with friends since you will need to do a lot of taking before being fed. The food was average which is expected given the large crowd we were a large group and the consensus was that the enchiladas were the best, particularly the mole and green. Prices were average for a Mexican/TexMex place. Nice place for large groups and recommended for that.

First visit. Won't be the last

By davefoshee |

This was our first visit to Viola's as we seldom get to San Antonio anymore. So figuring if the family chefs are good enough to give Bobby Flay a beating ... why not try it? To begin ... the margaritas are really good. We ordered different combinations of enchiladas and all were exceptional. My Tex Mex (with chicken) may have been the best. We all enjoyed it very much

Nice location, not great food

By Cindy B |

We were visiting Sea World and stayed at the Hyatt Hill Country Inn. Restaurant is located about 5 minutes from the Hyatt. Cute from the outside, inside was average. Staff was not very attentive and completely disappeared once they gave us the check. Fahitas were okay, but not great. Salsa was ok, quesso did not have much taste. They did serve a lot of food, however seemed pricey for the quality.

Great Hot food

By bears60 |

I bring family and friends to this restaurant because the food is always delicious. We love that the food is always hot when it comes to our table. Food tastes homemade and the tortillas are always soft and taste great. We tried the tortilla soup for the first time and it was delicious. Lisa our server is always very friendly and professional. The restaurant is very clean and so are their restrooms. Thank you for never disappointing us.

Great outdoors

By Lisa M |

Is not your typical Mexican restaurant. Enchiladas were ok. The salsa tasted to much like just tomatoes. Kind of bland tasting. Very overpriced.

High priced Mediocre Mexican food.

By Dayne I |

Beautiful restaurant. Nice atmosphere. Only thing is the food is not very good. My girlfriend ordered the Steak Milanesa and it was burnt. They made another order and it did not have any flavor. Waitress did not ask us how how the steak was even after the first one was burnt. I wanted a traditional chile relleno, but they only had it with brisket and cheese. Also no flavor, but the brisket was tasty. The poblano pepper was bland, the batter was tasteless. They did have a good margarita.

Wonderful.

By Debra P |

We visit here frequently when in SA. We keep coming back because...the food is good and the outdoor patio is delightful. There is a playgroung and evening live music....not sure if every day. If you know ahead call and make a reservation. There is additional parking on the back if you need it.

Great fajitas

By bobal59 |

Had lunch at Viola's and found the restaurant located in the hills West of SA. Lots of green and rolling hills, a great location. The restaurant is large and new. We had the lunch special fajita taco plate and found them tender and a large serving in each taco. Service and lunch was fast. Staff were very friendly. We did not on the large patio. We will go back there again. Each meal was under $10.00.

Good, but Nothing Exciting

By Anthony A |

Viola's was recommended by the hotel staff while a colleague and I were in town for business, so we decided to give it a try. The building is fairly large, with ample parking. We were seated right away - they weren't very busy, this being a Monday evening - and we were able to order drinks immediately. The atmosphere is nothing special - what you'd find in most mid-range Tex-Mex eateries catering to an Anglo crowd. I opted for the carne asada dinner, which comes with refried beans and rice. Again, nothing special, although there was nothing wrong with it. The salsa was fairly spicy and flavorful, but the chips were a bit disappointing, lacking flavor. Service was very good and attentive, and we had no problems there. Overall, an ok experience, but nothing special to recommend it.

2 HOUR WAIT FOR FOOD ... AFTER WE ORDERED

By Happy2Comment |

We walked in at 6:05 P.M. We ordered at 6:20. We were waiting on a couple top join us. That couple arrived, ordered, and ate before our food ever arrived! Our food arrived TWO HOURS AFTER we ordered! We had to tell THREE PEOPLE that our food hadn't arrived and that we had been waiting for a LONG TIME. STILL, it took AT LEAST 30 MINUTES, AFTER WE TOLD THEM about the excessive delay, for them to bring our food. We only planned on drinking one drink while we waited but we had THREE instead. The people around us repeatedly usd "F" Bombs ...and our waiters rarely came by our table to check on us. We had to ask for a manager. He FINALLY showed up when we were ready to leave. In spite of their awful service combined with the fact that we told them our appetizer (queso) tasted BURNED, they STILL charged us for the queso. This was the WORST visit EVER. I think it was also our LAST🤬 The menu oz price and the portions are small but we wouldn't mind paying if we had better service. This was an AWFUL EXPERIENCE!

Good food, nice atmosphere

By myalinski |

My brother recommended this restaurant as it is their favorite Mexican food restaurant in San Antonio. He took us there tonight and it was very good. We ordered the queso as an appetizer, it was just melted cheese, I personally consider queso to have some salsa or flavorings added to it. My order was good. The waitress was attentive. My husband pork chops looked wonderful. I would come back to this restaurant.

Delicious food and a playground!

By Pamela V |

We always come to Viola's when we come to San Antonio. They have an amazing patio and a playground for the kids and on top of that, the food is delicious!

Policy changes are not customer friendly

By Ada M |

We have been going to Viola's since it opened. The quality of the food and the ambiance have always been great. Nevertheless, the changes they have made as far as charges are not what you would expect of a Mexican restaurant. They are charging $1.99 for chips that used to be complimentary. Every other Mexican restaurant brings chips to the table as soon as you sit down . Not at Violas any more. Imagine going to Olive Garden and being charged for their salad and bread; or to Red Lobster and being charged for their delicious cheese biscuits; or any restaurant and being charged for bread. Even BBQ places give you complimentary bread. What's up with Violas? Our daughter had the Chalupa and asked for extra avocado. That was $2.25. Our granddaughter ordered a Quesadilla and asked for chips and pico de gallo with it. They charged $1.99 for chips and $1.00 for pico de gallo. Now, the very bad news: their flan used to be the best we had in the area. We ordered flan almost all the time. It used to be a slice cut from a round flan, just like a cake slice. Now what they bring is a round mound, like made in a ramekin, about 4" in diameter, and for this they charge $5.49. But, their Tres Leches and Sopapillas portions, although just a bit more expensive, are enough for two people, with the huge sopapillas being enough for 2 or 3 people. This makes no sense. And the flan does not even taste like before. Service was slow that day (a Sunday at 6:30pm) although the restaurant was not full. I don't know if the other Barrios family restaurants are doing the same. We might have to reconsider Violas.

Pretty Location and Nice Staff

By SammiDeRosa |

I stopped in here while visiting San Antonio to try out their happy hour. There was plenty of parking in the lot and the building was a very pretty location. I wish the weather had been warmer because the patio looked like a great spot to get a drink. I sat at the bar and was a little disappointed to see that their happy hour specials only consisted of 1 drink for the day and one dish, however they did have some early bird food specials. I got a margarita and the special of the day, enchiladas rancheras, and wasn't disappointed. The food was good and the bartender was extremely friendly. Overall I had a good visit and enjoyed the food, I'd recommend stopping in for a visit.

Great as usual

By rick1060 |

My wife and I went there for dinner. We almost always go there when in San Antonio. The building is very nice. The staff is very good and everyone is friendly. The food is fabulous. If you go you need to ask for the Poblano Sauce

Best Mexican food in SA

By bears60 |

This is the best mexican food restaurant in San Antonio. It is west of town and a good drive, but worth it. The food is always HOT when it comes to your table. The salsa and chips are fresh to start off with. The flour and corn tortillas are soft and delicious. The charro beans are great! The enchiladas and the carne asada tacos are so tasty. The service is always good. The restaurant is very clean and the bathrooms are spotless. We will return. Thank you! !

Chiles rellenos to die for

By StheReviewer |

I asked my Uber driver for some restaurant recommendations since he said he lived nearby the location I was being dropped off. I asked if any of them had good Chiles rellenos and he said I had to go to Viola's Ventanas. He was right, they were incredible. My wife's enchiladas we're excellent as well. Our waitress Virginia was friendly and attentive. She decoded some menu items we were not familiar with and made great suggestions. We left stuffed and extremely satisfied.

Beautiful patio and good food

By TravellingBee338 |

A nice spot. Not too expensive. Great service. They even have a vegetarian menu. We loved it after a hot day in San Antonio

Great for Lunch

By Netza G |

In the four months I've worked in the San Antonio area, I have visited this place on many occasions for lunch and I am always satisfied. The food is great, hot, and inexpensive-about $10 for a plate and drink. I've had the street tacos and enchiladas, every time I'm impressed with the price and quality of the meal. The atmosphere is good for work conversation, not too loud, and I've never had to wait to sit. I look forward to coming here again.

We had a great meal and great

By Angeline C |

We had a great meal and great service at Viola’s. We started with the queso and salsa which we really enjoyed. Someone recommended the puffy tacos and so that’s what we ordered (with chicken fajita meat) and they were excellent! Definitely different than anything I’ve had! I also had the strawberry lemon drop and it was delicious. Our server, David, also was very good.

Charming and delicious!

By MsPro |

This restaurant was inviting from the moment we stepped in the door. It was cool, but light and bright on a hot day. The white walls and huge glass walls overlooking the huge patio area drew us in. The ice cold air conditioning inside was the only thing that kept us from eating outside and enjoying the ambiance of the tree covered patio. Even the misting fans could not compete with the 104 degree temperatures on the play ground and plaza. Our waiter was very friendly and offered several helpful suggestions. He was very patient when each of the five diners with us wanted to customize their food and drink orders by adding and subtracting ingredients listed on the menu. The chips, salsa and queso were tasty, but the Mama Rosa’s queso appetizer was superb! The fajita’s were delicious, but the best meal ordered at our table was the fish tacos. Each taco included an entire filet of fish wrapped in a freshly made tortilla and accompanied by a mango salsa. We were at Viola’s on their Margarita Night which meant that each Margarita was only $5. We had a few! Overall, this was a delightful experience.

Great food!

By Angela09Dayton_Ohio |

It was great to find an other than chain-restaurant in San Antonio. Had the vegetarian fajitas and loved them! Yum!!! Great service and ambience too!

Poor service and management

By Orlando S |

Get your act together Viola's! No drinks or food orders taken after forty minutes of being sat. They did serve chips twice, BUT after two verbal requests for service--crickets! We had an impatient 9 mo infant with us too. They had half of their usual lunch crowd yet their assistant manager Bayan Al-Rafati did not offer any sympathetic response besides throwing her hands up in the air and blaming high school kids that they hire. Hiring, training, and managing are all controllable factors. I travel for a living and eat around the country weekly, it pains me anytime I have to give local restaurants a negative review.

Wonderful place to share with family and friends!

By rbkb2015 |

From my first visit to Viola's Ventanas (following a job interview), to our weekly visits, my wife, granddaughter and I love to eat at this restaurant. Located on a beautiful wooded site in Westover Hills, Viola's provides that perfectly balanced ambiance bridging casual to more upscale dining. We always take out-of-town guests to Viola's (my brother says that it has the best fajita's he's ever had). The patio is a wonderful setting to eat and listen to live music. My granddaughter loves the playground. Louis Barrios frequently stops by the table and may even bring by samples from the kitchen. If your visiting SeaWorld, you need to save time for Viola's Ventanas.

First rate for us!

By DallasCouple1 |

We ate here on a rec from the hotel. Since it was a Sunday night it was not very crowded. It had a very authentic Mexican feel, not upscale big city chic. Four of us ordered something different and we all enjoyed our food. We had beef enchiladas, beef empanada, carne asana taco and fajitas. Sometimes the plates arrive hot and the food is not warm, but NOT the case here. Good food at good prices. Maybe a complaint would be a very small bowl of chips and salsa for 4 people but waiter refilled frequently. We would go back here . And we would try the large patio area (raining when we went)

Wonderful environment

By Berenice C |

Wonderful location (ample parking), wonderful ambiance, wonderful service, wonderful food! It definitely has an "hacienda" kind of feel :) It's the perfect balance to go on a romantic date, or to visit with family and friends. The weather was perfect so our group sat outside, and enjoyed each others company, and the live music. We were a group of about fifteen and everyone's dishes looked delish (e.g. the puffy tacos, the shrimp skewer, mole enchiladas, and tortilla soup). Definitely a place to visit if you're looking for some authentic Mexican food at a reasonable price with great service and a fun location. Side notes: -There's a large playground outside (well lit) for kids to enjoy -There's a bar both inside and outside for the adults to choose from

Couples try the patio at this authentic venue

By Mariah S |

If we had sat outside, it would have been a better date night. I did not go out to the patio, but from what I saw and heard, the live music was nice and the tree-shaded patio was warmly lit and attractive. The inside decor was decent and big windows were nice, but it was so loud and busy. I was very happy to get my grated cheese on the side for my tacos, which had plenty of meat. The queso flameado was flaming, which was a fun novelty, but it was too elastic. The photographer gave us a nice free photo and wasn't too pushy. The food was not amazing, but I enjoyed hearing and reading some of the history about the owners' original restaurant. Even though this place is fairly new, it is an authentic San Antonio food spot.

Great atmosphere and looking restaurant. They have a great looking patio, looking forward to trying that out next time we.

Food for everyone

By vaceodude |

I grade Mexican restaurants in two visits. First visit chicken enchiladas and the second visit carne asada. This place had amazing enchiladas and the empanadas were to die for. Great place

Can't Eat the Atmosphere

By mommybeagle |

Hoping to take my husband to a nice birthday dinner this past Friday night, I decided to take him to Viola's Ventanas. The atmosphere was lovely and the service was very nice ; however, the food was barely average in a city with some amazing Mexican restaurants. We ordered an appetizer which came with our meal. My chicken flauntas were completely tasteless while my husband's burritos were as he put it "okay" Needless to say, we were both very disappointed. We also found the main dining area to be quite noisy so a dinner conversation was nearly impossible for us.

Early Bird Dinner

By Alanhimmelstein |

Met 3 other couple for happy hour drinks and dinner. We were seated timely. Wait staff was excellent and brought drinks quickly. Our order was taken nicely and correctly. Food was brought out looking good. I ordered enchiladas rancheros and they were quite good. We shall return in the future.

Fabulous Food

By Rick Stiles |

Chicken enchiladas with the creamy sauce were very good as was the puffy taco. Top Shelf Margaritas were really good. The guava empanadas were really rich and filling. One of the best in San Antonio!

Great food and Service

By bears60 |

Our food was hot and delicious. The enchiladas and charro beans were great. The Asada tacos were also delicious. Lisa our waitress always makes sure the food is brought hot to our table. Our tea glasses stay full at all times. The restaurant is always clean as are the bathrooms. We will return and always recommend this restaurant tobour family and friends. Thank you!

Awesome Vibe!

By Balad |

Great for family gatherings. The place has lots of character and a huge patio out back. I recommend the chicken enchiladas verde.

Ok

By Jibarra8 |

Very nice place staff very friendly and attentive. We had a couple of drinks and they were very good. I thought the price for food was alittle pricy compared to other restaurants, food was ok I had a combo plate that came with a stake and the stake was alittle dry and thin when asked for corn tortillas they were not home made and they were not even warmed up like out of the package had to tell them to go warm them up and even when I got them back they weren’t really warm, I would have loved for the tortillas to be home made for the price and style. I substituted my crips tacos for puffy taco and only got 1 puffy taco didn’t say anything as our food took a little longer than expected and we were tired. The rest of my family food was good beef puffy taco was good burritos were good. I’m not sure if I would try again it was a hit or miss with the food.

Very nice out of the way place

By Buck W |

Viola's is on the northwest side of S.A. We were at Hyatt Wild Oak Ranch when they told us about it. The grounds are wonderful with huge oak trees on a large outdoor patio. The springtime weather was wonderful, so we ate outdoors. It might be a bit warm during the summer months. The owner stopped by to visit and told us about the history of Viola, her mother, and two other restaurants owned by the family. We really enjoyed her visit. The food was great; the portions were plentiful. We had fajitas, enchiladas, quesadillas. They also have non-traditional Mexican entrees (not Tex-Mex). The service was a little slow; I think our waitress was in training. We will be back the next time we are in the area.

It's Just Okay...

By Jennifer A |

Came in expecting to be wowed... But left thinking, this place is a dime a dozen. The server recommended to must haves and I thought, go with it! He knows best. Puffy tacos were greasy and the fish taco was good, just tiny for basically $6. I had a beverage, puffy taco plate, and one fish taco and left owing $22.

Birthday Lunch for Friends

By Jerry M |

Great service, got to spend about 15 minutes with Ms. Barrios (a real lady) and had a good lunch. Nice lunch menu, clean and nice and cool.

Ok food

By Beach Babe |

I heard such great things about this restaurant but the food was ok. I won’t be back. The building is gorgeous though.

Subpar Food/Subpar Service

By Happy08 |

After waiting for an hour to be seated right next to a door that kept swinging open and blowing our napkins off the table and then another thirty minutes for someone to greet us and offer us a drink - which never happened. I finally got up to ask what was going on. It was TWO HOURS before we finally received our drinks and food and the food wasn’t even that good. No I don’t want a free $6 order of sopapillas for my troubles, thank you. How about comping a meal. Won’t return and definitely don’t recommend.

Love Viola's!!!

By Amy S |

This place is top notch in every way! The food is awesome. The drinks are awesome. Great atmosphere, live music AND a great play area for the little ones! It is a win-win-win-win-win situation!!

Beautiful Restaurant, Average Food

By HappyPenny |

If you're going on looks alone, Viola's Ventanas is a great place to eat. The grounds are gorgeous and the atmosphere is perfectly elegant. Unfortunately, their food is not so stellar, especially considering the excellent reputation that the Barrios family has in the San Antonio community. Their restaurants are considered among the best, but I found Viola's sadly lacking. The trouble started when the waitress brought out chips and salsa. The chips came in a container about the size of a small soup bowl, with about fifteen large chips in the bowl. Seriously? How much do tortilla chips cost? Is the management too cheap to give their customers a decent-sized serving? Even cheap dives give you plenty of tortilla chips. Their entrees are equally disappointing. The guacamole was fresh, but lacked seasoning, tasted bland and uninteresting. The Tex-Mex enchiladas did not have that authentic taste we know and love in Texas. I'm not sure if they used crummy cheese or just seasoned them badly, I only know I didn't like them enough to eat all three enchiladas. That's always a bad sign - when the enchiladas are good, my plate is totally clean. :) To top everything off, the service was extremely slow on a night when the place didn't seem that busy. We had a nice, friendly waitress, she just didn't seem to want to move fast. I really wanted to like Viola's Ventanas - it's such a beautiful restaurant. But unfortunately, good food is more important than good looks, so I don't believe I will be eating here again.

Upscale Mexican Restaurant with good food reasonably priced

By Arte404fam |

EXTENSIVE and I mean EXTENSIVE menu here with massive amounts of food and drink options. The food was really good - tried several things, but the enchiladas were my favorite. Everything we had was good, though, and the service here is pretty good as well. You get big portions and it is still reasonably priced - great combination there. Place is kept clean and looks really nice from the outside and the inside. Definitely worth stopping in if you are in the area.

Wife Birthday Meal

By barry b |

We have been here several times in the past and did not find the food as good at the other restaurants they own but wanted to give it another try. Well we are glad we did, it was so much better this time. The food was not greasy and was fresh and everything tasted fresh and great. Our waitress was great as well and they had great service. So we are so glad we gave the place another try and want to let them know we noticed the improvement. Thanks again!

New location La Hacienda

By bears60 |

The Scenic loop new location for La Hacienda is excellent! You will not be dissapointed even though it is outside san antonio. Worth the trip. The mexican food is the same recipe as the other locations. The chicken fried chicken is HUGE, and the grilled veggies are really tasty. You get plenty of fries. Daniel our server was very nice and took care of us. The restaurant and the restrooms are very clean.

Had our mother Bday party there. Were treated very well for a large group. Food was terrible typical fast food everything. Large out- side patio for fresh air.

Nice atmosphere, bland pricey fajitas

By jesfire415 |

We were invited to celebrate a birthday at Viola's Ventans. On arrival the atmosphere was nice and very spacious. The place has a big patio with a live band. This place has a playground for children. Unfortunately the beef fajita plate I ordered was bland and the beans too salty for my taste. The Marguerite was pricey and just ok. I would pick another place for a birthday celebration.

Excellent Margaritas

By ker1994 |

Good food, but better margaritas. Fajitas were good, but beef was a little tough, and chicken was a little dry. The house margarita was really good, and only $5 during happy hour.

What did I miss?

By Kathy P |

I wish I could have given this 3 1/2 so I based this on the fact that husband & MIL's fajitas were very good. The said the meat was tender and the tortillas must have been made in house. I had enchiladas, they were no better or worse than any I have had at home. All the claims of "authentic", same stuff in Michigan, just saying. This is also tempered by the fact that our service wasn't great, we got better service from one of the men wearing an apron(busser perhaps?) Our server was not as good as we'd have liked him to be. Oh and those good tortillas came about 5 minutes AFTER the fajitas arrived and we had to ask for them. We went there strictly on the recommendation of our resort, if I lived in the area I would not go out of my way to go there. One really bizarre thing was that the entire parking lot has signs up and red markings on the ground saying 'Fire Lane, No Parking.' What's the deal with that? I can understand in certain places, but the whole darn place was marked like that. Very odd.

Go for the ambience

By Ernest P |

Been here several times before. The place is beautiful, in my opinion, however the food is mediocre. Our server was a little scattered but got better with time. The beans were salty and the rice was "ok". The chicken soft tacos were supposed to have a cream sauce on them but was no where to be found. The drinks were strong. The outside has had some renovations. No longer a tent outside but it is beautiful. Would go again if I had to.

Lovely Setting and HUGE

By L H |

This is not in our section of town but we had been wanting to try this restaurant and had a coupon so went with friends to dinner. Surprisingly the traffic was terrible but luckily we were coming in the opposite direction of the backed up traffic:) They have lots of parking and the place is HUGE. Very lovely building and large outside patio with trees and a beautiful fountain. It was an early dinner so not crowded at all during a week night. We were seated promptly greeted by our waitress. She was courteous and patient. While we decided what we wanted to checked back until we were ready to order. The menu has lots of varying choices and you really need to read the descriptions to find just what you want. They do have a Happy Hour but it ends at 6 so we were not there in time for that. The bar area is at the front entrance. Our orders were prepared quickly and correctly. The fajitas came out sizzling and a good portion. The Tacos “a la Diana” are a good choice if you need to steer clear of too much spicy food. The plate as 3 soft rolled corn tortillas filled with cheese and shredded cheese and served with refried beans, Spanish rice and small guacamole with sour cream ($12.49). These were not heavy at all but they did get cold fast. The beans and rice were standard. They do have daily meal specials too. Looking over the menu most things were priced higher than some places but the portions seemed larger. I really wanted a smaller serving but did not find that. I might have asked about ordering off the kid's menu:) A few "senior" smaller serving choices would be nice. But two people could share some of their plates. The building and grounds are beautiful and worth seeing. If we lived closer or in the area in the future we would try them again.

Mexican dinner

By Brian S |

We found this restaurant near our hotel, looking for some more authentic Mexican style food. Very good food and nice sized portions. There were 4 of us and we bought for sharing. There was more than enough to go around and some left to take home. I had a Mojito as a cocktail, they picked the mint right in front of us. They also have a nice play set for the kids.

Great Mexican cusine

By Sheldon S |

Our first day of a weeks stay in San Antonio my wife and I had dinner at Viola's Ventanas. We both said we have to come back one more time, which we did. Service is terrific, menu is huge and the food is great. They have a very inviting outdoor seating area, however the weather during our visits kept us indoors.

Exceptional Outside Seating, Decent Eats and Friendly Staff

By YO_LOOK_AT_ME |

Our waitress Maddison was very friendly and efficient. They accommodated our request for outside seating and ensured adequate seating was available for one of our heavier set individuals in the group. The drinks and food were great and the ambience was enjoyable. On our visit, they had an individual singing live outside and you could see they had a children's playground nearby and well lit. Again, the visit overall was great and all in our group seemed to enjoy the environment, staff, drinks and food.

Excellent Food

By Marlena N |

Our shuttle driver from our hotel recommended Viola's Ventana's for my husband birthday dinner. The restaurant is beautiful and big plus they have patio seating outside with live music. The food was great and the service was great as well. I told them it was my husbands birthday and they came out with Sopapilla's and sang happy birthday to him.

Enjoyable Dinner

By Burkdogmom |

I ate dinner here with some work friends on a Tuesday evening. It wasn't too busy and the food was good. I enjoyed the chocoflan cake and the margarita sampler was very good.

Good food but too many flies

By Robert F |

A copy of La Hacienda, Viola’s has the same formula: extensive outdoor seating with room for many large groups. Live music, although disappointingly, not the night we visited. I like their red tortilla chips. I usually get one of their vegetarian dishes. They are always nicely prepared. Our enjoyment was marred, however, by flies. Many many flies. We had to eat with one hand and swish the other constantly to scare away those little devils. Once we were finished, we didn’t care. Within about thirty seconds eight flies were on my plate. They need to find a solution for this. Even with the fan on, the flies came. And so we left.

Homemade Quality food

By bears60 |

The food at this restaurant is always hot and delicious. The enchiladas, beans, and rice taste homemade. The Asada tacos are moist and delicious. Lisa our waitress was GREAT. Our tea glasses always stayed full. The restaurant is very clean and so are their restrooms. You will not be disappointed at this restaurant.

Delicious food and fantastic service!

By Laura M |

We dined in on a Tuesday night and had the Fajitas for Two special. It was DELICIOUS...and SO much food! Our server was friendly and attentive. I HIGHLY recommend the Chimichurri! It is available upon request and SO delicious!

Whoa! Stop here!

By BDoug53 |

We'd been driving all day from NE Mississippi and wanted a good Mexican Restaurant and we found it close to our hotel. We were impressed with the ambience and the hostess seated us without any wait. The waiter was congenial and helpful and brought chips and salsa our whole visit. One of our group had enchiladas, another shrimp enchiladas and I had cabrito. The food was excellent and mine was cooked like goat should be cooked. We had ample drinks and the service was excellent and attentive. This place made our visit memorable because of the friendliness of the waiter and the overall helpfulness of the staff.

Best patio dining in San Antonio!

By RhondaHTrip |

The Mexican food and drinks are excellent, the staff is friendly and well trained, but the patio is what makes this a memorable dining experience. It's under a canopy of trees strung with lights, making it a magical evening. If you go for lunch, you can sit near their play ground and enjoy watching your children while you relax with friends. Plenty of inside tables, a friendly bar man and lots of parking make this a great choice!

Lousy Service - Lazy Service Staff - Cold Meals

By Jeff L |

If you're eating outside to enjoy the fresh air and sounds, bring your own picnic basket because the service sucks. No one cares !!! The entire wait staff and hostess have never been supervised or trained. I really don't know how they have stayed in business as long as they have. I have been here 4 times and all were the exact same poor levels of service. I literally had no expectation on my most recent visit. I was not disappointed! We were a table of 3. There were 9 tables and booths still needing to be cleared. The hostess sat us down at a table that had water and salt or sugar granules spilled on it. It even had a piece of paper like a straw wrapper remnant. She looked at it and began to reach for it. Someone called to her and she puled her hand back as if she was grateful for the interruption. She then walked away. We didn't see a waiter or waitress for 11 minutes. We left and will never return.

Disappointing but the Sangria Great

By 2casagatos |

We went on a Wednesday afternoon at 4:45. There were two large groups already seated and we believe this contributed to our slow service. We ordered cup Tortilla Soup, Burrito Plate and Plato de las Ventanas with ice tea and glass of Sangria. Unfortunately the Sangria was not included in the Happy Hour price but it was good. The Chips were oily but the Salas was good. I would suggest the serving the Tortilla soup in a cup is too small to include the toppings. Our cup contained 1/2 cup broth, 2 pieces of chicken and toppings. We waited about 25 min for our entrees which could have been hotter. Our server was friendly unfortunately she was busy with the 2 large groups.

Great Value

By Rick Stiles |

The puffy Taco was magnificent. I can understand why the Barrios family beat Bobby Flay! The beef Chalupas were well seasoned and tasted great! The sopapillas looked fabulous!

Good food and salsa

By Amyandshaun |

I got one of the lunch specials and it was very good! Well priced with lots of food! The salsa was great too!

Excellent wait staff

By JefffromSA |

We had a party of 7, including 3 children, and the staff could not have taken better care of us on a busy Saturday evening. The food was delicious, especially the enchiladas that several of us ordered, and the chips and salsa. It's a lovely restaurant with a neat inner courtyard.

Good value - good food

By Greenvilledan |

We were seated promptly and had chips and salsa at our table. It was good. The margarita was also good. We chose to split the “Plato de Barrios” two tacos, two cheese enchiladas, a piece of skirt steak and rice and beans $15.99 or so. It can with flour tortillas. We enjoyed this place. There is inside and outside seating. Good atmosphere!

Wonderful atmosphere!

By LaVeeda B |

This restaurant has a wonderful ambience, great outdoor seating and music on the night we were there (Saturday) and a fenced in lovely shaded playground area that is within visual of seating for the kiddos. The margaritas were delicious and was all the food. Very plentiful plates. We had no issues with flies or bird poop, but we did not sit under a tree. The staff was very informative about the menu. I had the chicken enchiladas with poblano sauce and its was the best I had eaten. My husband had the shrimp with bacon, the shrimp were just a bit overcooked but otherwise delicious and he is very picky. All in all a lovely evening.

TIME WITH FRIENDS AMAZING....

By Rachel J |

This is a beautiful restaurant and that's the best thing I can say about it. Went with a group of friends expecting to order off the lunch menu only to find out that IF your group is a certain over a certain size you are given a "fixed" menu at twice the price. Granted, the price included taxes, a drink and gratuities. Oh yes and a tiny bowl of salsa with a small bowl of not-so-fresh chips!! The food - BLAND. I guess if you really don't know what Tex-Mex should taste like - it's OK. IF you are looking for ambiance - you found it. IF you are looking for amazing food - check out the little hole-in-wall Mexican restaurants all over San Antonio. As my husband says...."Been there - Done that".

Just OK

By R4Faith |

I'm probably spoiled to good Tex Mex having lived in Dallas all of my life but I thought the food was just average. The salsa had a good kick but the chips were kind of stale. We had fajitas...beef & chicken. The tortillas were great but everthing else was just ok. There is a large patio with fans, misters and a good play area for kids.

Second Try is a No Go!

By Dora T |

This is the second time we dine here. The food was less than average, dry and tasteless. It looked and tasted like they warmed up leftovers. The service was worse. I don't think management has enough wait staff. They look tired and overworked. The best thing was the outdoor ambiance, seated under the majestic oak trees, just beautiful. Our first try was the same, so we thought we'd give it a second try since we enjoyed the patio so much the first time. So disappointed... will not go back, what a shame.

Food was spectacular!

By bbrooks2024 |

Wonderful place for our bridal party. The service was top notch. You will absolutely have a great experience at this venue. Highly highly recommend.

Bad experience

By Cynthia P |

The family who owns this restaurant is always bragging how great their food is. Been to Hacienda del los Barrios and their puffy tacos tasted like dish soap. Visited Violas Ventanas and the enchiladas rancheras were dry and pretty much flavorless. Also, the server forgot our guacamole but the charge appeared on the bill. She did remove that order, though. Well hate to break it to the owners, but the food is mediocre at best! Quit the false advertising and improve your recipes! Will not visit anymore of these restaurants. Only ate there because it was a family member’s birthday.

Patio Dining Warning....Bird Poop and FLIES

By Tresmilain |

This was our third visit to Viola's Ventanas. The first visit was 3 years ago, we sat inside and enjoyed the food. It was a 4 star experience. Two years ago when we visited, we sat outside, enjoyed great food, great service and live music on the best patio around nestled in the trees. Today, while visiting SanAntonio, we made our routine trek to Viola's Ventanas with extended family in tow. We were so excited to show them the amazing patio and enjoy good food. We were quickly seated outside and requested tables near a fan to keep flies away (it usually works!). The kids were able to play on the playground (this is a great feature!). I would like to say this was an enjoyable experience but it was not. The flies were ridiculous. Even worse, we got crapped on THREE different times by the birds in the tree above us. Now I know the restaurant can't control the birds and it's a crap shoot (ha) to sit beneath the tree but when we mentioned this to our waitress, she was very mousy and just said, 'oh sorry'. Working in customer service, she should have offered to move us to the area that had zero trees above us, bring more napkins or offer an indoor seat. Lets rewind a bit....upon arriving when we asked for a patio seat, the greeter should have let us know that they could seat us outside however the flies have been very bad lately thus giving us the opportunity to change our mind and sit inside. We had very small kids with us. We couldn't even take a bite of food without having food on our forks, plates, etc. I understand flies happen but there was never a time when we didn't have at least 10-20 flies on our table/food. We were eating so fast and waving our hands and finally we just all gave up and said to hell with it, paid the bill and left. We won't return. There are measures that can be taken to help with fly control. The food was good. But we had to eat so fast we did not enjoy it. Had we not eaten fast, the flies would have carried it off. The entire experience sucked and the waitress although nice, was very meek and didn't seem to care about it at all. Very disappointed. So, if you do go....sit inside no matter how appealing the outside patio is.

Reasonably priced and good food

By Tammy C |

Every time I go to a restaurant, I have to remind myself that we're still in a pandemic. They were short-staffed, and that was evident in the service. But the food was good, as were the cocktails. I was a little surprised that they charged for chips, but the hot sauce was free. Portion sizes were excellent, and the view outside was lovely.

Great food, great place to take kids and atmosphere.

By Scott T |

Good place to take family, great menu. Their creamy poblano sauce is awesome! Chicken dish I got was a little overcooked. Service is great and atmosphere. We enjoyed sitting outside on their large patio listening to live music. Playscape for kids was a plus!

Average Mexican Food

By ReefDiver33 |

Went here for dinner while in vacation with the family. Wait was 30 minutes, which was a bit puzzling considering when we were seated there were 9 empty tables in our section. It was also challenging to order a menu margarita with a premium tequila, the first attempt arrived from the bar with an extra shot glass of the requested tequila. Food was very average texmex, not at all what we expected after reading Trip Advisor reviews. Service was ok, but not exceptional. San Antonio is known for its phenomenal Mexican cuisine, but I would not rank this establishment as part of that list. We will seek out a different restaurant next time.

Great Margaritas, Skip the food.

By NRGLEXICON |

My margarita was very good, but I was very disappointed in the fajitas. We generally serve them sizzling hot, but the chicken was lukewarm, and lacked flavor. There was about a teaspoon of pico, and a similar measure of guacamole, along with sparse scattering of shredded lettuce to accompany the dish. The tortillas were wonderful and saved the day. For some reason, there was an ample supply of tortillas, while the other condiments were lacking. I left most of the chicken on my plate and filled up on the tortillas.

Viola’s Ventanas

By Malia C |

Absolutely the most amazing restaurant I have ever been to. I tried the Puffy tacos and it was the best decision I ever made 10/10. I think I could eat one everyday of the week. We got the opportunity to meet Diana (the owner) and she was the sweetest. We learn ed all about their amazing place and their puffy taco throw downs. We loved the environment, the staff, the location, and again those puffy tacos. I even got a hand stitched stuffed animal that they sell to support small businesses. We LOVE Viola’s Ventanas. If your in the area you have got to try this wonderful place!

House Magaritas STILL Diluted

By Napunani |

Its been a bit over 2 years since our last visit, so we gave it a try again. Warning - Eat here without high expectations. We arrived after 6pm on a mid-week evening and was seated immediately in the dining room. Sadly, the HOUSE margaritas are still diluted! Guess that's the deal for happy hour since it hasn't change in over 2 years! Our entrees, enchiladas and chile relleno were good...average, but not outstanding.

Excellent Food, Patio dining

By baowen1977 |

Enjoyed great food and service on the patio. The fajitas were very flavorful and very well priced. We also had the stuffed quesadillas which were very tasty.

Birthday lunch

By prissyh |

Viola's is so elegant that you will keep coming back. They have so many choices to pick from. To start they have great lunch specials, awesome Happy Hour & a romantic dinner is perfect ! On a spring, summer or fall day their amazing fabulous patio is epic ! An abundance of space for any kind of celebration topped off with live entertainment. This is just 1 of 3 of their family restaurants in memory of their beautiful mother Viola 💕

Be a bit selective day and time

By 8thaero |

We really enjoyed our first visit and wrote a fine review . Now 3 times back we found that after 5 PM and a weekend are not good times simply due to sudden flow of families. Now too hot for comfort outside I think about 4 is a good time to be in a booth inside for an early dinner. While you sit and enjoy same good food and drinks tables are moved together as it fills with large groups and suddenly is crowded and slow going then on. Second try on a Sun 5PM we just walked away and went to Johnny Carinos 15 min down TX 151. Seems sort of success breeds failure. Still great ample food only service suffers. When it works? Still an hour in and out . When it does not ? 5 minutes to go back to car.and should be clear by the full parking lot. Means real good still just not a THAT worth the wait. Be back when only in the 80's and more for late lunch. Don and Dorly Phillips

First night at San Antonio.

By simoncarlo3 |

We checked in late into the hotel and the concierge recommended the restaurant. The food was very good. The mole was delicious. It might not be as were the enchiladas. It might not be a totally traditional Mexican place but very good.

Great place for a family dinner!

By Kathy Z |

We had a wonderful dinner at Viola's Ventanas. The drinks were yummy and the food was hot and delicious. The atmosphere was fun and the restaurant is large, so plenty of seating. All of the staff were super friendly and kind. It felt like a great family place! Yes, you have to pay $1.99 for chips/salsa UNLESS you order queso. So just get the queso and enjoy!

Ordered pick up

By JillianneMarie |

I only have 30 mins for lunch so I called ahead and Ordered Nachos "a la Butler" while the taste was delicious the price and the serving was NOT worth it. The portion I received was incredibly small. I paid $10 and some change for 5 or 6 chips and 4 jalapenos. It was good, just disappointing at how stingy my serving was. I had so much toppings left over so it left me wanting more.

Love this place!

By imakwajgirl |

Stumbled across this gem when visiting family. Amazing food, great ambiance and impeccable service. We actually went back several time while we were in the area because the food was so great and resonably priced. We will be back!

Nothing Special

By Heather C |

My husband and I were visiting our friend in San Antonio. I said I was craving Mexican food, so she recommended Viola's Ventanas. The three of us arrived on a Sunday night at about 7pm. The parking lot was fairly full (it's a huge parking lot), but we were seated right away. Edward was our waiter, but sometimes a waitress would be helping us. Her name was Kelley. Both were nice enough. The complimentary chips and salsa were brought to our table fairly quickly. However, it was such a small portion for 3 adults! The salsa was just okay, but it wasn't great. We also ordered queso. The queso was a major disappointment! It just tasted like melted Velveeta. There was no flavor whatsoever! Also, some of the chips that came with it tasted stale. For the main course, I got the traditional plate which comes with 2 cheese enchiladas, refried beans, rice, and a taco. I opted for a puffy taco with fajita chicken meat which was an upcharge. My enchiladas weren't that great. I only ended up eating half an enchilada. The rice and beans both lacked seasoning. My puffy taco was good though. My husband had the beef fajitas, and he said they were good. All in all, there are so many better Mexican restaurants around. Maybe I'm more picky because where I live, there are some great Mexican places to choose from. However, Viola's Ventanas just fell short. The food was just too bland for my liking, and it's a bit pricey for what it is. I would not recommend this place and will not be eating there again when I'm in San Antonio next.

Hopefully just a bad day

By rick1060 |

We have been to Viola's many times and it is usually good. This time it was not good. We visited on July 29. The service was extremely slow. Our server told us it was slow because the kitchen was short staffed. There was a roach on the wall behind one of the members of our party. We told our server, a busboy came by and all he did was hit the roach with a towel and knocked it on the ground. The food was extremely below par. Several of our party upgraded to the puffy tacos. The puffy tacos shell were very soggy.

Nice dinner

By beth ann k |

We enjoyed our dinner outside while listening to the entertainment. It's just a nice setting. Our food was good and the server was nice.

Authentic Disappointment...

By Rufus19832013 |

Viola's is authentic in every aspect...except the food. It doesn't have to make flames shoot out your ears, but it needs more spice than hospital food. The cabrito was roasted well, the tortillas were fluffy and perfect. The rice was some of the best Spanish style rice I have had. The beans and salsa had some heat, but not much flavor. The Chicken Vallarta was visually appealing, and shredded well, but could have been served on an airplane. Virtually no flavor, and absolutely spiceless in any way. Beautiful facility, excellent service staff, friendly environment, but too boring for a return visit.

Disappointed in the service

By DblDogDare |

This was our second visit to Violas Ventanas. The first visit was for drinks with friends and was enjoyable, which is why we decided to try dinner for my wife's birthday. The outdoor patio is beautiful and the music was great!! The food was ok, and the service was... less than acceptable. We were seated outside by the hostess, and waited and waited for our server to acknowledge us. The manager Ben noticed that we had not yet been waited on, so he came over and asked for our drink order. We ordered water, my wife ordered a Mojito which was very good, and I ordered a beer in a glass, dressed. Our server Oscar delivered our drinks (no waters) and my beer was in the bottle. I requested a glass dressed. We also ordered an appetizer, Chili Con Queso and added some Pico meat, which he said was extra. I was ok with the upcharge. We ordered our dinners, Pollito en Mole and Chorizo Con Huevos and Fajitas. We waited, and waited for the appetizer... We asked about the appetizer and Oscar apologized that he had not yet delivered it. We waited, and waited... and again had to ask about the appetizer... Finally the appetizer arrived just before the meal... with no meat. The manager Ben was passing through again, so I asked for additional napkins as the only ones we had were what was wrapped around the utensils. I also asked for the water we had requested at the initial drink order. Ben never returned... Oscar came by and we asked once again for napkins and water. We finished our meals, which were... just ok. By this time the dessert and additional drinks they offered were not going to compensate for the poor service. Not sure if I will give Violas Ventanas another chance or not. Time will tell... If so, it may be just for drinks and the music.

Best of the Best!

Our resort recommended this restaurant, and we loved it! The food was excellent, and we will go back there in August when we return to the city. I am sorry I forgot to take a picture of the delicious meal!!!

Somewhat meager lunch for the price but EXCELLENT sopapillas!

By rollo_orlando |

Enjoyed a nice chicken dish for lunch accompanied by excellent chips and very decent salsa along with free club soda with lemon to drink! Waitress was especially courteous and professional; do hope she pursues her goal of becoming a middle school teacher. Place was very clean, not too crowded with a very nice atmosphere. Took the sopapillas home and just devoured two of them with warm honey! Yum!!!

Warm, friendly vibe.

By Darlene M |

I have been to Viola's many times. This is a big restaurant, lots of seating just east of Seaworld on Westover Hills Blvd. I appreciate the warm, family atmosphere and it is a pretty setting. I would recommend reservations on a weekend as it can get quite crowded. There are many places to eat Mexican in San Antonio, but Viola's has a big menu and large plates you can share. Also good drinks and I love the homemade chips, salsa and guacamole. Large bar in front. Very reasonable prices.

Great time

By David H |

We were staying at the Hilton Hill Country Hotel near Sea World and wanted to find a restaurant nearby. We decided to give Viola's a try. There were 6 of us on Saturday night and expected a wait. We were seated indoors immediately and a good thing since it was 100 degrees in July. The service was great and the owner came over and visited with us for a while, his mother was Viola. There was outdoor seating for maybe 200 and a great you lady was singing and playing her guitar. After a great meal at a reasonable price with great margaritas we moved outside to listen to the music and have another margarita. The owner came by again to visit. They had a ton of misters going under large old live oak trees. The sun was setting and temperature was nice. We will go back there. I believe they also have a downtown location.

Great Meal and Service

By Richard G |

We were in San Antonio for a couple of days. Our Hotel had limited options so we decided to venture out. Ended up at Viola's. Beautiful large restaurant with an enormous outside seating area. We were promptly seated outside and enjoyed our beverages and our meals. The “fluffy” tacos were a different take and were delicious. Our server, Cesar, was wonderful. He was very attentive and kind . Definitely recommend.

Amazing food

The puffy tacos are amazing We also had fajitas Steaming steak with vegetables Everything was amazing authentic Mexican cuisine. The grounds are beautiful. Our waiter Eddie was excellent very quick and efficient great waiter. Thank you for a great experience.

Ahh yes, another great Barrios Family Restaurant!

By Doug S |

No trip to San Antonio is complete for our family (my choice) without a trip to a Barrios Family Restaurant. We've been to Los Barrios a number of times, been to La Hacienda maybe twice, and now Viola's Ventanas. Viola's Ventanas was coincidentally located just down the road from the hotel which we were staying. We arrived early for dinner, probably around 5/5:30pm on Sunday evening, July 3rd. Our waiter (unfortunately I don't remember his name, and I cannot make it out on our receipt) was very friendly and polite, so much so that our son (age 8) said "he is really nice, I like him!" The dining room was HUGE!! We actually entered the restaurant from the side which is where the bar was situated. Once seated, we noticed there was an outdoor seating area with it's own bar as well. I had looked at the menu from my phone and once I saw "the dish", I immediately knew what I was going to order. Every time I go to a Barrios Family Restaurant, I order the same thing: The Classic Enchilada Assortment. This plate comes with five, that's right, (5) enchiladas; one Enchilada Ranchera, one Enchilada Mexicana, one Enchilada Verde, one Enchilada Poblana, and one Enchilada Tex-Mex. It also comes served with beans and guacamole salad. Temperature wise, the food was piping hot and absolutely delicious!! It definitely lived up to my expectations!!! Our daughter ordered the Special Nachos (beans and cheese nachos) without the jalapenos, and our son ordered cheese quesadillas. My wife ordered the Tacos "a la Diana" which were 3 Soft rolled tacos filled with guacamole and shredded chicken, garnished with sour cream. Also came served with Spanish rice, beans, and guacamole salad. The tacos were delicious!! Each bite contained a nice blend of the chicken with the creamy guacamole. Our kids enjoyed them so much that they each ordered one for themselves after they finished their own meals. To wash everything down, my wife and I had frozen margaritas with salt which were some great tasting margartias!!! We will definitely return to Viola's Ventanas!!

Great for families

By Lauren |

We went for dinner on the recommendation of our hotel. The hostess was snooty and we considered leaving. I'm glad we didn't. The salsa was delicious! The enchiladas were good as were the beans. The rice was bland. The patio is beautiful but the best part is that there is a playground for the kids to play on! The manager came out and chatted with us a bit and was friendly. One thing to be aware of is that the kids meals come with a drink but chocolate milk isn't okay as that drink. So we ended up paying $2.69 for the chocolate milk on top of the kids meal price.

Wonderful

Saw this in Texas Monthly magazine and it was very good. Many flavors of margaritas and the one I had was very good. I had beef puffy tacos and they were good. Will go here again.

Good food

Viola's is a great venue for parties and gatherings. We sat out on the patio with the live music. Sound was loud enough to enjoy but not too loud that you couldn’t have a conversation. For food, parties, & fun you should try Viola's...

Excellent Food!

By jkb1230 |

Went to Viola's for the first time for a business event. It was in the evening and the crowd was modestly sized. The wait staff was friendly and served our group (approx 20) people with ease and our food was gooooood!!! if it wasn't for the distance from my home, i would probably go there regularly.

Great Food, Atmosphere and Service

By joanna972 |

Our family was staying in a hotel near Sea World. This restaurant was very convenient and easy to find. We were seated promptly and everything they brought to us tasted wonderful. There were some hiccups. The people seated near us had to point out no one had taken their drink orders. As soon as they realized the issue, I noticed the wait staff really picked it up for them. And, I ordered the Carne Asada Dinner and after a few minutes the manager came by and said they did not have it available. After talking to him for a minute, they were able to prepare me something very similar that tasted delicious. They gave us queso and chips on the house as an apology. The chips were divine, strangely everyone liked the red ones the best! My children liked the food and we all liked the atmosphere! We will gladly return our next trip to San Antonio.

Well Done !!

By MacJoe |

Great food at a reasonable price. It was very nice inside. Great service! Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. We went for a late lunch and got our food quickly. Outside cantina for evenings I presume and a fenced in playground for the kids in the back. Very seldom do I write a review where I don’t have some suggestion for improvement, but this place just seems to have it together.

Great food, awesome atmosphere!

By Lesve |

Authentic Tex-mex food that never disappoints. The service is very prompt and always courteous. If you are looking for excellent atmosphere, this is your place! They have a very roomy beautifully decorated indoor and outdoor patio areas. They are perfect at accommodating large crowds (my family celebrates many occasions here). Live music on the patio on various evenings and playground area on the patio for the kiddos. The food is delicious and plentiful, and the drinks in their full service bar are both beautiful and refreshing! They have several different types of margaritas and offer swirled options on their frozen margaritas if you have difficulty deciding which of the many flavors to go with. We've never had to wait long for a table even with a large group. They accommodate quickly and they always have plenty of room. Very great restaurant to check out if visiting or if local!!!

Great food and service

By rick1060 |

Went there on July 3rd and 4th. We almost always eat here when in San Antonio. The Pablano sauce is one fantastic. The staff is very friendly. The service is very good also. Our server was Justin and he was great. We requested him on the second night. The food, drinks and atmosphere are always fantastic.

Great experience and great food!

By emrtravel |

We enjoyed this experience at Viola's which was near our hotel in the northwest part of San Antonio. There is a large lushly landscaped outdoor patio that is very relaxing. The service and food was great and I'm not easy to impress when it comes to Mexican food having lived in the southwest all my life. The shrimp enchiladas were exceptional. A friend had fajitas and loved it. Also impressive was that they had a vegetarian section on their menu with meatless variations on their entrees. The tortillas were hot and delicious. We had Mama's Queso, a homemade (non traditional) queso dip made of four cheeses, chopped tomato, onion and serrano peppers, which was served with chips. Instead we had it with the warm tortillas....excellent! Sopapillas (fried bread that puffs up, topped with cinnamon and powdered sugar & served with honey) was a great dessert. The server made us feel welcome and provided excellent service.

Nice place

Went there for my first time today. Had a large group of family there I ordered the "El Traditional" and subbed a puffy taco. Food was good and the taco was the bomb. Everyone had a good meal

Always a dependable choice

By Reservata2 |

We've visited this restaurant several times. This time (January, 2021) we didn't need a heavy meal, so we chose nachos and puffy tacos, and all were good. Due to Covid, the menu is pretty slender, but it is adequate. It's interesting that you are supposed to use the QR code on the table, but it won't work because you don't have internet access in there. The printed menu was appreciated. Lisa was a fine waitress. The tables were well spaced and the staff seemed to be observing all safety precautions. The background music was at an appropriate level, which we appreciated. Closing time is early right now, and we we didn't finish until past the closing time, but we were treated cheerfully. On each visit it's been a good evening, and so this is one of our go-to restaurants when we are in town.

Disappointing

By Misa |

Restaurant hosted a political event on a Saturday night. We had reservation for 20. What a mistake. The focus was not on the customer. Parking was impossible. Parked up the street at a gas station. Lucky I did not get towed. The TV channel monopolized the parking lot with their trucks. With my elderly father. No disabled parking as people without tags parked there too. Never saw security. Service is very slow and food very forgettable. My son commented that his nachos tasted like they were made with artificial cheese. Went to bar to get a couple drinks. 2 very slow bartenders for hundreds of people. Thought I would use cash to speed things up. Of course no cash accepted!!!!! Only credit cards. My margarita was generic and tasted watery. This restaurant accepts hundreds of patrons that they can definitely NOT accommodate. It’s a place for outdoor dining and letting your kids run and play in outdoor playground. If this is what you’re seeking you will enjoy. Also make sure you have a couple of hours for a mediocre meal. I was livid when I left to trek back to my car and noticed several premium cars parked in front of restaurant in the fire lanes. Owners, VIPS, media, politicians???? Much more important than my elderly Dad who fought in 2 wars!!!!!!! If you can’t handle the masses limit your customers!

Everything we had was medicore, not the pop of flavor we expected

By SweetWillie |

Went this past weekend. Started with guacamole and Queso Flameado (which is Melted Queso Chihuahua topped with Mexican chorizo, grilled onions, and tomatoes) Guac was ok The Queso Flameado had a measly sprinkling of toppings, 98% was still cheese. We've enjoyed this elsewhere when it was loaded with chorizo etc. The puffy taco is a Taco Bell like abomination, it may be good elsewhere but the quality of ingredients here was not any higher than a Taco Bell, mealy chicken, iceberg lettuce, cheap cheese etc. Short ribs were ok, not really any pronounced taste.

Be careful here; the margaritas

By LievenC |

Be careful here; the margaritas on the menu mention NO price so they can charge you anything they like to. Not very friendly workers. Food was very bland. Our visit was a real disappointment and we are definitely not going back.

Good food, good drinks, friendly service

By Nancy C |

Service was great, food was pretty good, not great. Was maybe a little noisy, but we were next to 2 or 3 large parties of 10-15 people. Pretty grounds and close to our hotel.

Decent Food / Horrible Service

By Alanhimmelstein |

Went here last Friday evening with friends for a relaxing dinner. We were seated timely and that seemed to be the end of human contact. Our "server" was Calvin. He was pretty much invisible during our time. It took 20 minutes to place a drink order, 30 more to have someone else find our drinks and bring them, and then 45 more for our food to arrive. The food certainly did not justify the wait. We had been to this restaurant before and had no such problems. We won't go back.

Wonderful breakfast and dinner!

By Mandy M |

This wonderful restaurant was recommended to us by our hotel and it did not disappoint- we loved dinner and had to return for breakfast which was just as wonderful. There is beautiful outdoor seating and the inside is great as well. The chips and salsa were great which is a deal breaker for me if not good and these were excellent. Will be back when we return to San Antonio!

Pablano sauce was the truth!

By Tastingtheworldforyou |

We tried the pablano (sp?) with the chips upon the suggestion of the waiter & it went really well! Chips were thicker than flimsy chips that normally come out. Hearty in a good way. We had puffy tacos which were pretty good. Can't give them 5 stars as mine were slightly doughy but it was my first time trying it so who am I to judge. Wife had enchiladas & she loved them. She couldn't finish cause she was full from chips & sweet tea! There was a 50 year marriage celebration there & that added a plus to the meal. Price was reasonable & food came out timely. Great time. Nothing bad to say! Didn't have any alcohol & meal was little over $30 for two. Good times

Great food and service

By bears60 |

The food at this restaurant is always very hot and delicious. Great salsa and chips. The lunch specials are great for the price. Lisa our server is great. The restaurant is very clean and so are the restrooms. You will never be dissapointed at this restaurant.

Excellent Restaurant

By caroljones50 |

My family is in town celebrating my son's graduation from Air Force Basic Training. We decided to try Viola's for dinner, not knowing any restaurants in town. What a great decision!! The fajitas were tender and tasty. The enchiladas were excellent. The flour tortillas were thick and soft. The salsa and chips to start were good, also. The staff were friendly, and the food came out quickly. We couldn't have asked for a better experience. If you are in San Antonio, give this place a try.

Our first visit was a success!

By HWH3 |

Great chips, and we really enjoyed the salsa. The enchiladas were good, and the service was even better. We will definitely be back.

Horrible service

By samantha s |

I stopped by for dinner after work on a Friday evening I joined a friend who already had a table I waited for about 10 minutes before a server came to take my drink order I asked for a water With lemon And my friend was also Already waiting on lemons for her water Another 10 minutes went by and now I'm assuming the manager came by to ask If my drink order had been taken I told him I was waiting on water So another 10 minutes went by him and the server showed up with 3 waters At the same time And set them all on the table (No lemon) our order was then taken And we specifically asked for the puffy tacos On our plates Which was an up charge and we were aware As we talked and got full on chips Another 30 minutes passed And the server came to ask what we ordered Because he didn't know And there wasn't an order for us We told him once again what we ordered And shortly after came back with 1 plate Correct and the second plate something totally different than what was ordered so He leaves And comes back again With another wrong plate By this time My friend is done eating Her food Finally the 3rd plate comes out Still wrong but i just Ate it anyway It was cold No tortillas were served to us Until asked I then asked to speak to the manager Took a while for him to come And I noticed the owner himself was walking over to tables And talking with the guests but never approached our table Only the larger parties Finally a manager came to talk to us and told us We could have sopapillas on him And that they would be right out And half our meal comped The ticket came We paid and waited about 15 minutes to get our cards back Sopapillas never arrived So we left All I can say was it was the worst experience I've ever had and I never complain Because I'm in the restaurant industry and I understand that things happen But this was just totally overboard The server was completely overwhelmed He had way more than he could handle And as many employees as I saw Walking by not one ever asked if we needed anything Or offered to help the server No kind of team work in place Which is absolutely horrible I could never let any of my servers drown like they did I'm a restaurant manager at a hotel nearby I usually recommend violas To our guests who ask about Mexican restaurants in the area But after this experience i will never suggest this place They are better off going to chuys Or grand tequila nearby Sorry violas you lost my business!

Solid!

My family always enjoys the laid back, family atmosphere here. The servers are very attentive and the Monday fajitas special is on point.

Viola's Mexican retaurant

By monaghandot |

Ambiance is nice....beautiful restaurant but the food is just average. I live nearby and have been there several times and always left satisfied but just not happy with the service. True...there were several of us so that could be the reason. Food was just average....nothing to rave about.

Disappointing

By Lynette A |

Disappointment. Beautiful place. Server was very attentive and pleasant. Unfortunately the food was totally bland, unremarkable, boring, overcooked….kind of insulting to be in San Antonio. We’ve had better Mexican in Chicago. What a shame.

Another great meal in SA!

By MrZullo |

Great Tex-Mex! Was here on a Friday night. Great food and excellent service! Try the enchiladas verdes!

Very attractive restaurant

By satxdiver |

I had business in Westover Hills so decided to give this restaurant a try as I had heard good things about it. The restaurant is very attractive both from the outside and inside light and airy. I was seated immediately as it was a late lunch (~1 PM). I decided on Louie's lunch plate as it sounded great. The chicken enchilada verde, my favorite enchilada, was delicious. The enchilada had ample amount of chicken and better ample amount of verde sauce. My other favorite is burritos particularly ones from New Mexico (red or green?). The burrito was hard and I may have been able to drop it on the floor breaking a tile hard. I left the burrito. The spanish rice was really good but the refried beans were nothing spectacular. I would like to go back sometime and try the other offerings without a burrito. The ice tea (unsweetened) was good and the waiter kept it full. The service was great and what I expected at a Barrios restaurant.

Great Find!

By Tresmilain |

Our Family wanted to try something new while visiting San Antonio this week. My husband found Viola's Ventanas and I'm so glad he did. What a beautiful property! We had a great feeling about this place from the moment we stepped foot inside! We visited on a Monday just before 6pm so they weren't busy yet. My daughter and I shared beef fajitas and later learned they do a special fajita night on Mondays and Tuesdays! The fajitas were great! Both flour and corn tortillas were delivered without us even having to ask! We ordered queso as well and two other sauces/dips were delivered with it as well. A creamy white dip, not sure what it was but was delicious. Also a chimichuri (sp) that was out of this world! My husband had the puffy tacos and liked them. We both took advantage of happy hour, he really loved the prickly pear margarita. Mine was on the rocks and was very good without being sour. The owner stopped by our table and what a kind man. He told us the history of the restaurants and channels they had been featured on as well as cooking for dignitaries. We will be back but next time to sit on the enormous patio (i think he said it was 9,000 sf). A beautiful setting under live oaks, an outdoor bar, live music (even on a Monday), and outdoor playground for the kids and fans. Because it is on the East side of the building, it is nice and shady and cooler as the sun is setting. Really a classy place, great food and excellent service. I highly recommend and only about 1 mile from the Hyatt Hill Country Resort and Spa.

Great Local Family Owned Restaurant with Attention to Detail

By MobileDrAl |

Excellent location , great food with special family created local favorites. Perfect for a leisurely dinner, good atmosphere for anyone wanting to escape the fast- food rush near SeaWorld.

Business lunch

By drosag |

Violas is a great option for a lunch or dinner. The staff is kind, helpful, and diligent. Space is not a challenge. Therefore, comfortable even for a group of 30 or more. We had an amazing lunch experience and the food is top quality. Give it a try.

True Mexican roots

By Carlos R |

If you're looking for a true mexican flavor. This is a place where you can experience both, the flavor and the class. Service is one of the best that I have experienced. It is a great place to share time with family and friends, as well as a good business meeting. I fell in love with the "Poblano sauce" for the enchiladas and the chips. We reserved for a family of 11, including kids. Upon our arrival, the table was prepped with kid's seats and some goodies for the kids to paint and play. They have different ambiences, from regular tables, to a more private area, to an open outdoor space.

Very tasty

By NeeterB |

The inside of the restaurant is beautiful with large windows and overlooks a park-like setting. The staff is friendly and efficient. The food was tasty, although not particularly spicy. I was there for a late lunch on Saturday and it was not very busy and I didn't have a margarita, so can't comment on that.

Authentic Mexican cuisine

By vanepps107 |

Viola's is an elegant restaurant well worth the visit. We ate out on their massive deck with full size trees growing up through the planks making for a unique but beautiful setting. The menu offers a wide variety of choices. The four of us dined on Taquitos del Pueblo, Enchilades Verdes, Fajitas and Pollo en Salsa. Each was cooked to perfection and very tasty! Although the initial service was not very prompt - we suspect the wait person assigned to our table was very new and not having a good night - however, the waiter I flagged down jumped right in and immediately took care of our table. Kudos! The only miscue of the evening. Still, well worth the visit. Moderately priced for good value.

Convenitenly located by the Hyatt Regency Hill Country Resort

By Mira G |

Wanted lunch in the area before checking into the Hyatt Regency and found this restaurant on Google. Very nice atmosphere. Large menu selection. Waiter was not too familiar with some of the items on the menu. Could not make a recommendation. We were there during the lunch hour. Restaurant not busy, but it took awhile to get our order. We had plenty of chips and salsa while waiting. Food was good. Its your typical Mexican Food. The patio looked nice. Maybe come back and have drinks out there.

Authentic!

Our first time at this restaurant and it was great. Good food and good service. And the margaritas were great as well.

Wonderful

By Penny C |

Atmosphere was incredibly relaxing and the food was delicious. We really loved all the variety of dips and all of our entrees were very good. The portions were large and the prices were fair, we will definitely eat here again?

Back again.....we loved it the first time, so a repeat was in order

By davefoshee |

It's been months since we first tried this place....and since we are back in town ..... here we go again. To begin .... you have to try a margarita from their extensive selection. Talk to the server and get some ideas. Also, doesn't make any difference what you order....it's all good. I especially like the enchiladas TexMex, and the wife likes the tacos Diane..... Regardless, order something fb and get ready to enjoy it

Great dinner!

By kaitlyn s |

We stopped by for dinner during our recent family vacation. The restaurant was clean, roomy and bright! Our server was Jonathan. He was awesome! Extremely nice and helpful. We ordered puffy tacos, carne tacos and burgers for our daughters. Everything was delicious! It was margarita night so I took advantage of the specials and enjoyed a strawberry mango margarita! Yum!! The manager came around and greeted each table also. I appreciated that small gesture. There's pretty outdoor seating with misters too! Don't miss this place!

Very good Mexican in San Antonio

By DaveG873 |

My wife and I enjoyed a very good dinner a very good dinner Sunday evening . The restaurant was not very crowded and we enjoyed excellent service. My combo platter included 2 enchiladas, a slice of steak and tacos including a substitution of a puffy taco. I enjoyed each item very much. My wife had the flair as which she also found tasty. Only concern was margarita served in what appeared to be large glass, but had small drink due to. Dry thick glass. The food made up for that and we will return.

Fantastic!

By Beth A |

The owner came to visit before our food arrived. That was the start to a fantastic meal with great service!! Best puffy tacos EVER!!

Not bad food, but warning

By Daniel G |

Not bad food, but warning in this new normal, did not get any silverware or napkins with a Togo order. 😔

Great for Large Groups

By thatgirljen |

Went to Voila's with a large group while attending a convention. They were able to seat us promptly with our reservation. Service was slow, as to be expected on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was packed with many other large groups dining. Wait staff was apologetic for our wait and for the few mixups with orders, but set everything right in the end. Food was good and served hot, which was nice considering it can be difficult to get everyone's food out to a large table at the same time and have it all be hot and not luke warm!! drinks were also good! :)

An Exception or Par for the Course?

By RichAlva |

Celebrating my brother's birthday on March 5th, 4 of us, all seniors, were counting on a special time, based on other visits. One of the items we ordered for two of us to share, was a "Mofofo"Grill, consisting of beef and pork and priced at almost $36.99. As it turned out it was some chewy, tuff strips of meat and veggies swimming in a soupy mess...we ate very little of it! My wife just wanted a small portion of grilled chicken meat, no beans and rice. The chicken was ok, but seemed to be priced at a full Fajita plate...$15.99. THAT seemed a bit pricey for this type of restaurant. No price adjustment was forthcoming. Our total bill was $110 with tip. Not very pleased with the food! For a Saturday night about 8PM there were not many people there, so don't understand why our Mofofo Grill food was such a mess! I communicated directly with the restaurant, hope to hear from management or anyone from the restaurant, before posting this review. No response! Enough said.

First time...won't be the last!

By J C |

This was our first trip to Violas Ventanas. The restaurant was beautiful and very bright. The wait staff was very friendly and helpful. The food was fantastic. We happened to be there on fajita night. My wife and daughter shared them and there was enough steak for 3. We were fortunate enough to meet the owner who spent several minutes with us, telling us about the history of the restaurant. We would definitely recommend this place to anyone, especially if you're staying at one of the nearby resorts like the Hyatt or Hilton.
