Food is excellent but the Goan menu is misleading

By deepakrenita |

Food is excellent but the menu is misleading. The Goan dishes are no where close to the type of dish(es) that is served in Goa. E.g : Vindaloo would be a thick red based curry in Goa, here we were served just pork ribs with a slight hint of vindaloo flavor. We also ordered for prawns with sour sausage which was very good but nothing to do with the Goan preparation. I think the waitress can do a better job in explaining the menu specially for people with Indian origin ( since we know the Goan preparation). Otherwise, it is an excellent place to dine and loved the ambiance.

Indian Mediterranean fusion done right

By d1621 |

We went with family for our second dinner here. This is a Portuguese meets Indian fusion dining experience so it is really unique and delicious. We ordered to share so that we could try as many dishes as possible. Last year we went there not long after it opened. There had been some service glitches but this time both food and service were much improved and we enjoyed everything. Some of the dishes were a bit under-described for a foodie looking for hints but if you know Indian food I'll guess it easy to describe. Our favorite thing at both dinners had to be the tumeric sourdough bread that makes you smile with every bite. All the breads were awesome. This time we shared the amazing poached fish, the filet, the pork ribs and crab-squash cake. Then we ordered a few desserts and the big winner was the multi-thin layered chocolate cake that made all the spices from all the dishes just melt away in delicious chocolate goodness. And with a few fun cocktails and wines it was a terrific evening.

Forget the name, try the food!

The food, based on Goa (a former Portuguese colony, now part of India), is a super combination of both Portuguese and Indian cuisine. Without reservation, the food is the most interesting in Austin. The vegetable dishes closely hue to Indian palates. The fish and seafood toward Portugal. The restaurant is handsome, not so noisy that oe cannot hold a conversation. Service is very good but not excellent: too many customers, not enough staff. This restaurant is definitely worth a visit.

Great new addition to East 6th

I've been here twice now and both times the food was spectacular and really unique for Austin. The design is pretty eye-catching, and while the menu feels kinda out there at first, all of the plates were super approachable and delicious. Great new option in what may be Austin's best food neighborhood.

$76 + tax & tip for the lamb, pan seared fish, and naan a la carte

By Friendly_Renee |

If you're dining solo, please just do the happy hour. The menu advertises $75/pp for the prix fix dinner menu, but you can order a la carte, if you want separate items. I incorrectly assumed I could order a la carte portions for 1 and pay the respective price. Instead I ordered the lamb ($38), pan seared fish ($28) and naan ($10) and all were served as the sharable portion at full price. I asked why the price on the menu was listed at $75/pp but my order for fewer items was more and was told that the pp price listed just assumed more than one person is eating. I felt very misled. It would have been accurate to list the prix fixe menu price as $150 - to serve 2-3 people. I was stuck with it though and was reminded of the old saying about what happens when you make assumptions. The good news is that it was delicious but the bad news I don't feel the portions justified the price (except for the naan). The fish portions were probably 1.5 oz each (2 pieces) served over lentils that needed to be cooked for 2-3 extra minutes. The lamb chops were good but the plate was not a $38 dinner with small servings of greens and 2 larger pours of what I think was a yogurt based side dish. The naan was huge and flavorful with a tasty spread. The restaurant is well decorated in décor and lighting. The bar staff were delightful and accommodating. Had the portions and pricing been for 1, I'm sure I would have left delighted. I would encourage the management to consider extending the Happy Hour to 7pm. 5-6pm is very narrow and ends early when there are no other options for solo diners to reasonably enjoy the menu. I was in town for a business meeting and didn't want casual fare available at Lucky's and didn't have the desire to walk to a near by restaurant. There are probably other solo diners in town for work or who just live in the city who would enjoy the restaurant. There is also the option to list a la carte pricing on the menu, or simply advertise the full cost - $150 (or whatever it is) with the # of servings ... so people have a better idea of what they're getting themselves into. I will also say that I started my dinner by saying I was "trying to understand" how to order dinner off the menu and I heard everything but the price. So, please encourage your staff to give the price per item to solo diners. Best of luck.

Just Stopped In

Took the advice of a local food reviewer and went in on a Friday night at 6. No reservation but plenty of room. The waitress was very knowledgable about the menu and we took her recommendations on everything. Had a great evening, made the suggestion they try to get Superbock beer. Try the smoked bread and ribs.

An interesting mix of flavors!

Yum, yum! We heard the Lenoir people opened a new place and we had to try it since we loved Lenoir so much. It did not disappoint! We had a good sampling of everything: shrimp samosas (I didn't have any due to an allergy but my friend really liked it), the methi paratha bread with a divine lavender/plum? spread, the fried okra, ceviche, mussels cataplana, and the black spice lamb. Not a crumb was left on the table. Same with desserts - we got 3 out of the 4: chai tea panna cotta, spiced rum creme brulee, and the dark chocolate & coffee tart. It was such an interesting mix of tastes, including beets & mushrooms (!!), but it somehow magically worked together. Good variety of cocktails (including a coupe of booze-free mocktails for my pregnant friend) - I had something with plum & gin that can recommend. It's on East 6th Street and they do have valet ($10) they share with the hotel & the coffee bar next door. Alternatively, you can find street parking (metered) & walk. I didn't take any pics but their decor was great. An eclectic mix of Indian-inspired furniture, lots of light woods & macrame, oversized lampshades, lots of individual & family-style tables. We came at 5:30pm on a Thursday and it wasn't too busy but it got more & more packed later on in the evening. We unanimously agreed to come back in the near future <3

Wonderful experience!

Great Bar Scene and Tasty Small Plates

By Kathleen C |

Vixen's is located in a trendy neighborhood within East Austin. We sat at the bar and enjoyed several small plates, including the fried okra (delicious!) and the cheese pan (had to order this a second time because the bread was so good). The interior of the restaurant has a great ambiance, and the bartenders were friendly and provided great service. I also enjoyed the saag dish, which had a sort of tangy flavor that was different from other slags I've tried in the past. If you're looking for something other than barbecue to eat, this place is a must.

Innovative, Fresh, Indian Flavors With a Fabulous Twist

By Ashley W |

Have lived in India for many years and always lament how few really good traditional Indian restaurants there are in the US. Vixens Wedding is far from traditional but instead marries very Indian (Goan to be precise) flavors with incredible local ingredients and a creative fusion of recipes to present some of the best “Indian” food I’ve had in ages. Juicy Pork Idli, fall off the bone Vindaloo Ribs, gorgeously tangy and beautifully cooked Goan Fish curry and many more. This was one of those low expectations but incredible out one restaurants that you come across far too infrequently - hats off to the team !

5 stars all around

While I think most of Austin’s new restaurants are overrated and charmless, this place is a standout. Easy parking, great ambiance and you can hear the conversation at your table, and the food is delicious and a step above standard Indian fare. We tried all the appetizers and we’re delighted with them, and shared the chicken for our main and it was plenty of food for 4 people. We had no room for dessert but the tea was excellent! Definitely worth many repeat visits.

Best meal in Austin

Best meal we’ve had in Austin. Every course in the chef’s tasting menu was delicious and beautifully presented. The wines were good too.

very accomodating!

Had champagne in ice when we arrived & rose petals sprinkled on the floor to the bed! Very special treatment for a wedding night! It was the middle of the week and we only had the one night. They made it very special!

This is an interesting mix of east and west

This is an interesting mix of cuisines and is very good to eat. We shared a big selection of dishes and were not disappointed with any of them
