A New Yorker says Wow!

Wow! Walnut Street Cafe was excellent. The food was so fresh it reminded me of Europe. Our brunch was fantastic. Solid service, nice space. Food was killer.

Great breakfast to go

By Michael D |

A bit quirky the way the place is set up for breakfast but I ordered soft boiled egg, avocado and they have a really nice multi-grain toast. I took it to go and ate while setting up for a meeting. It's the perfect breakfast for me so loved the option and availability. Place looked nice to sit for a while and have a coffee.

Breakfast near hotel

By PeterKatrina6269 |

Had breakfast here on a couple of occasions on my visit to Philly as it was under my hotel. Both visits I had the oatmeal (porridge) which was very nice; topped with sultanas, raisin and syrup. The other good part of the cafe was they made a great cup of tea, even provided the milk!

Very Disappointing Brunch.

By Jimrad |

Even though we had reservations we were going to be seated literally right under the speaker being used by the group that was to be playing during our meal. They moved us to an adjoining table where the sound from that speaker would at least be at our feet. Since no other inside tables were available and although it was in the high 80’s, we requested an outside table. Not a great start but that’s OK. The food could save the rocky start. It didn’t. The Eggs Benedict with ham was large but not much else. The hollandaise sauce was the color of Cheese Whiz but not as tasty. The Black Scrapple with Romesco, black rice, hazelnuts and a fried egg was just ok. With 2 drinks before tip the bill came to around $48. We won’t be rushing back.

First time there... AND WE ARE GOING BACK!!

We wanted to go somewhere new for my birthday and have heard of this place. The food was AMAZING and place so nice nice and quaint. The manager was even visible and made sure to check on us.

Amazing find!

We went here for brunch last weekend and were very impressed! There was live music inside but we opted to sit outside. Service was great and the food was so good. Can’t wait to go back!

Need to Grow Some More...

By ShipCopTX |

I had breakfast, lunch and dinner at this restaurant while in Philadelphia on business, mostly because it was conveniently located next to the lobby of my hotel. If I had one thing to remember about the place would be the value of the meals for what I paid. Meaning the price was far above the value. For dinner I sat at the chef's bar and sat, and sat, and sat some more. It was like no server was assigned this station. I had a wedge salad, pan seared scallops and a dessert, $52.00. Now that was for two, count'em, two scallops. At the lunch serving I had a burger which was o.k. and breakfast was also o.k. The server looked at me sideways when I asked for salt and pepper for my eggs. No shakers on the table. He brought me a small dish with big salt chunks. I understand that they have been open less than a year. They need to work harder in my opinion.

Such a disappointment compared to last visit

By DianeTheAdventurer |

I’ll start by saying the last time I was here was for dinner and drinks and it was amazing, so I was looking forward to going for brunch this time. I arrived and waited at the hostess station for about two minutes and then heard a woman saying “ma’am, ma’am, MAAM”! I turned to see someone behind the bar waving at me to come over and looking annoyed. I explained I had a reservation and she showed us to our table which was bench seating. My husband moved over the chair from the table next to us and she grabbed it back saying the chair belonged to the other table even no one sat there the entire hour we were there. My husband has medical issues and really needs a chair to sit on and has extreme pain when sitting on a bench. I told her he needs a chair and asked if there was somewhere else we could sit. She said no unless we want to sit at the bar, which we didn’t want bar seats due to no backs on them. She was rude the whole time. She said we needed to come to the bar to place our order which I thought was strange. Why isn’t there a wait staff person taking orders? Ok so I went to the bar and asked for a coffee and tea and said we would order breakfast when the third person arrived which was about 5 minutes later. She said we can’t do that because we have to order everything together and pay immediately. No tabs allowed and no ordering in parts. Again, rude and unaccommodating. My husband went up to the bar to discuss the issue and finally some nice guy brought us a tea and a coffee. So back I went to place the food order. There were a couple fruit flies and the floor wasn’t clean. Overall an awful experience due to the rudeness of the first woman we encountered when we got there. I know they have an amazing wine list but I doubt I’ll ever go back!

American Fare

By pookala |

A very nice spot located on the very Eastern edge of Drexel University, and U of P. My friend and I stopped here for a light lunch before heading over to an exhibit at Penn. Also located near the World Cafe, this would make an excellent choice for pre or post concert dining. We sampled four dishes and each was done well. It's not a foodie lover's paradise but they are serving well executed American food in an open light filled space. My salted beet dish was excellent as was the chilled corn soup. The vegetable sandwich was fine as was the gravlax served with crisps and creme fraiche. We shared a lovely peach panna cotta for dessert. With one cup of coffee and two glasses of excellent rose, tax and a generous tip, our meal came to a $100. The alcohol is what really bumped the bill so you could easily do a lunch without wine here for $20-25 per person. Service was warm, amiable and professional. I would recommend for friends, families or even a business meeting.

Euphoric Dining Experience

By dwatravers |

There are not enough words to describe the Walnut Street Cafe. Chef Daniel has created a menu full of flavor. The entire staff is accommodating and friendly. From Khalil, the manager to Gabe the waiter everyone works as a team. I can honestly say this was the best meal I have ever had. There is not one thing on the menu that will disappoint. Make sure you save room for dessert. This is a place I will visit regularly.

The best Cappucino so far in Philadelphia

By FK_VALEMUS |

The best Cappucino so far in Philadelphia. For Australian, we are lucky for being able to buy excellent coffee almost all over the place; not in the USA. The coffee, most of them, is terrible; until I went to Walnut Street Cafe. Twice now already, and the strong Cappucino is amazing; it's better than probably 70% coffee in Australia; which is surprising. So.. yes, amazing coffee.

Average breakfast, bad service experience

By P.S. |

I made a reservation on OpenTable for breakfast given I was catching up with people and wanted to make sure we had a table to chat. When I arrived I said I had made a reservation and the host (Brandon) said in a very curt tone that it was only counter service. When I asked if it was possible to get a table he replied in an even more curt tone "I said it's only counter service" and walked away before I could respond. Given I was very nice to the host and I was simply trying to figure out a solution for how to have a breakfast for which I had made a reservation for on OpenTable, it left me embarrassed in front of my guests to have picked a place with such rude service. The food was passable (shakshuka without a lot going on but not bad) but the first minute of service/lack of service left a bad taste in my mouth. I will not be returning

GREAT PLACE!

By tato1 |

This place has only been around for a few months, but should be on its way as a great place to eat. Has outdoor seating, which will probably disappear once the weather turns nasty. Has a very modern décor inside, with parts of the restaurant having a ceiling that is some 30 feet high, if not more. This makes for a very loud space. Despite that, the food was superb--wonderful appetizers: try the whipped pork on toast, various cheeses with pickled green tomatoes. The chicken breast almost looked like a roasted duck--wonderfully crispy skin and really juicy. Try the cherry pie--the filling is fresh, not starchy. Great wine list--was surprised to see a Schramsberg sparkling wine in Philly. Service could have been a bit more timely, however. There is also seating at the counter with a view of the very busy kitchen. Would go there for another meal in a heartbeat. Parking next door. Can also walk from 30th Street Station.

Great

A real good spot. Cool bar but the dining room is a bit bland. Weird layout. Food is excellent. Service is excellent.

We will be back A LOT!

By DebMC123 |

Delightful atmosphere and absolutely delicious food! And jazz on Sundays. This is a great place and we loved everything we ate. Damn the carbs and get the stunning pastries. And try things you can’t pronounce! You won’t be disappointed.

Excellent stylish and modern

By Jeremy W |

Wonderful modern restaurant serving excellent food with sophisticated service. As soon as we walked into this new restaurant the manager and staff treated us as honored guests. Tables are comfortably apart and the noise level is moderate. Food is 'American' with a good burger on brioche bread. The bread basket is superb with one of the most delicious baked breads I have tasted. Good value at $25 per person. Large carpart nearby. Also visit the roof garden above the carpark for wide city views.

Average at best

By Gophillies20 |

Went for brunch and had an underwhelming experience. The staff are sugary sweet - trying to be overly nice so as to appear to have their act together. they don't. Ordered the pork belly sandwich and a side of roasted potatoes. The sandwich arrived with french fries -- why wouldn't you tell me it came with french fries if i had ordered potatoes to go with it? Partner ordered the oatmeal which the menu claims comes with berries; it doesn't - it comes with raisins and dried cherries. He questioned this and the staff debated with him whether raisins and cherries were in fact berries (they aren't). It didn't get nasty, it was just silly. As for the food, it was okay, nothing great and portions were on the smaller side.

Lovely brunch

By B.G |

The atmosphere inside the restaurant was really nice and well presented. The staff were all really friendly too. Although we didn't try any of the pastries, they are supposed to be very good as the pastry chef used to work at a Michelin star pastry cafe. The food that we ordered was pretty good, but it is a little bit pricey.

A great recommendation

By jerseymariner |

The staff at our hotel recommended this place and it was a very nice surprise. With so many places closed in Philly we were happy to find a very nice atmosphere, pleasant staff, and delicious off-beat menu items. Our server, Star, deserves special mention as she was just a delight to deal with and extremely helpful. Full bar, lunch and dinner menus, and a clean environment. What more could we want in a city that is having trouble opening up.

Pretentious

By Lovetogetaway4169 |

The restaurant itself is gorgeous and the food is tasty but not remarkable. Went for brunch when at least a dozen tables were open and seating was slow. I was asked if we had a reservation, then for my name, then last name while host entered it in an iPad. After we were seated we had to wait for menus. Bloody Mary was tasty but lacking in tomato juice. It was hardly even red. $16 for French toast should mean you get more than just the bread divided in 2 on the plate. Put 2 strawberries or something on the plate for goodness sake. We had at least 4 servers tending our table and had to ask twice for coffee refills. Oh and when we ordered coffee we were asked if we wanted cream for the table. Yes. Then asked about sugar. Ridiculous. After telling the server our son had a nut allergy he brought the check with a walnut on top of the check tray. A cute signature I'll admit but just dumb considering. Not worth it. There are many better options in Philadelphia.

Don't miss the view

By Judith R |

We visited this restaurant as a party of 6 last Saturday night. Our table was ready at the requested time. The server explained the menu very well. We ordered several appetizers to share and were treated to a complimentary appetizer of salted peppers, which were excellent. There was also a smoked salmon appetizer, potato and chive rolls and a lemon ricotta toast. For the main course, three of us had the ravioli dish which was served in a lemony sauce as opposed to the Italian red sauce that usually comes with this dish. There was nothing left on anyone's plate. Other entrees were flounder, chicken and leg of lamb, all of which were pronounced delicious. We had 2 desserts to share. The service was leisurely, but not slow and we lingered awhile over coffee while enjoying the view of the city from the large windows. After dinner, we took the elevator in the FMC building which is where the restaurant is located, to the roof garden on the 11th floor where one is afforded a great city view. The garden is open to the public and there is no charge, We will certainly return to this restaurant at a future time.

Lovely Lunch & Dinner Spot!

By arissalovesart |

We had an early dinner here recently. The glass walls are really beautiful and the decor inside is trendy, cool and modern. We were a little annoyed that we were given a cramped table considering the restaurant wasn't that crowded but that was really our only complaint. Our server was very sweet and attentive. The food portions are pretty small but thoughtfully prepared and tasty. We enjoyed the iceberg salad, hanger steak, and chicken! I would definitely eat there again!

They have a long way to go

By Belle1691 |

Went here a few nights ago since one of our friends lives very close by and he wanted to try it. I wish I had anything good to say about it. Our server, although very nice, was quite inexperienced and did not know anything about how certain items were prepared and any info about the wines. Service was relatively slow - I usually don't mind a wait between courses, but we were seated about 20 minutes before anyone took a drink order. The pasta portions are very small, no one had a clue that they were starter plates. I ordered the flounder, it tasted good but I am not convinced it was flounder. We ordered ice cream sandwiches for dessert and even they were tasteless. Hard to believe you could mess that up. The best part was asking for the bill and we got another table's bill. I think this place could be good, but they have a lot of work to do.

Just okay

By Kathleen |

Our visit to the Walnut Street Café for brunch was just okay. While the wait staff was very friendly, the service was very slow when the restaurant wasn’t crowded at all. Our food was good, but for the price, I was expecting much more. We definitely appreciated the atmosphere and live music, but left feeling disappointed in the experience as a whole.

Disappointing breakfast - twice

By Sara H |

I was actually here for breakfast twice in a couple of weeks. I was hoping the second time would be an improvement. Sadly, it wasn't. At my first visit, my companion's soft-boiled eggs were both hard and cold, as was her toast. We sent that back. The eggs on my shakshuka were so overcooked they were inedible. I could not chew through the white. Because of its proximity to 30th St Station, I had a second meeting there. This time, I had the soft-boiled eggs. They weren't cold, but they were hard-boiled, not soft. My companion's shakshuka had one egg, not two, and it looked equally inedible. The burrito was the only dish that was well prepared. Our dishes sat on the counter for at least five minutes before the server brought them to us. I used to frequent this restaurant pre-Covid and enjoyed it for dinner and excellent hamburgers. I don't know what happened.

Lively & Comfortable

By Todd G |

I dined at the Walnut Street Cafe twice while staying at the AKA Stay University City (where the restaurant is located). On first review, the menu seemed a bit limited, but I did find something to satisfy all of my cravings at both lunch and brunch. The serving staff is attentive and the price is reasonable for a good quality meal with some flare. My only criticism of the food would be that the salad dressing was a bit too salty for my taste. The atmosphere was comfortable and lively.

Sooooooo Good

My husband took me there for brunch, Kelly our server was great. He ordered the waffles & I ordered buttermilk biscuits w gravy & eggs. Large portions good price. DELICIOUS

Nice brunch

We stopped in for a quick brunch before heading home and were pleasantly surprised. The breakfast sandwich was divine and live jazz music really enhanced the atmosphere.

Third visit; delightful once again

By Rodney M |

We’ve been to WSC twice before, and, as in our first trip, we sat at the counter. The food was great, and the delightful server recommended some delicious wine specials. We had some east coast oysters, good enough to skip the mignonette, but then we ate some of the mignonette by itself. It’s a hard life. The pasta with ramps and enoki, flounder, and lentils with sausage were also delicious. The space is beautiful and the service was attentive but in a charming way, without being unctuous. We will keep coming back.

In-laws from out of town

By ATD4499 |

We had dinner at the Cafe with our son, daughter in law and mother in law last Saturday. The food was delicious, especially the oysters, gravlax and hanger steak. I was a little disappointed with the wine ‘special’, but that is personal taste. While the servers took good care of the older folks at the table, they were less careful with our children. The sound level was good and my personal experience with the service was terrific. We would go back.

Great Cinnamon Rolls

By kiwiandmolly |

I just stopped in to the Walnut Street Cafe for a quick bite while exploring University City. I had a coffee and an amazing cinnamon roll, just out of the oven. The restaurant had a clean crisp look to it and the staff was friendly.

Excellent food, staff, crafted cocktails!

By Wendy W |

Serene and delicious, top quality creative food, spot on cocktails, lovely waitress (sorry, I forgot your name, Ms. Very Nice Red Head!). One of Philly's best spots I'd say.

Perfectly Average

By Michael C |

Myself and several friends gave this place try for lunch and were not impressed. The space itself, has a nice ambiance, but is a bit small given the overall space it occupies. It has a triangle floor plan with doors at two ends and this just ends up wasting some valuable real estate. There is a (liquor) bar along one side and the kitchen/bar along another with a food coordination point in the center. This also takes away otherwise useable seating space. Our server was very polite, but not very knowledgeable about the menu. The lack of attentiveness was more disappointing given that the restaurant was not overly busy. I also observed an adjacent table of two get up and leave after waiting a similar amount of time. The menu was very traditional which came as a surprise given the feel of the place, but perhaps dinner is more interesting. Some of the menu items also seemed particularly pricey.. for instance Butternut Squash soup $12, Romaine (Caesar) salad without a protein $13, Chicken $26. I opted for the $15 hamburger which seemed in line with other competing places. Upon delivery, the burger was cooked perfectly and seasoned well, but it was at best 1/4 lb, whereas everywhere else would deliver 1/3 - 1/2 lb.. so it really felt small. Above average taste, below average size, overall: Average. The burger was served on a bed of your basic, deep-fried-from-frozen French Fries, but clearly not fresh cut. Average again. Getting the idea?

Fun Brunch

By Pirate828 |

Very good food and drinks. Ate outside but inside was really beautiful. Service was so-so. We had Eggs Benedict and oysters. Good spot if you are close by.

Rude employee

By Cheryl Smith |

You have a small food court set up in the FMC Tower, and when I was asking about when will the big chocolate cookies will be brought back. The young man asked the female employee I assume is in charge of setting up since a few of you r employees called out. I don't have her name but she is the only female that stops by the food cart. This happened on 8/18/2022 around 8:30am. I always purchase from your food cart, and thought it was very rude in her response to my question about the cookies. She had an attitude on her face not acknowledging my question, only responding back to the guy who asked her when will they be getting the big chocolate cookies back in.

Brunch for Dad

By Richard Lewis O... J |

My daughter brought us in the day before Fathers Day for brunch. The three of us enjoyed our meals, including a shared plate of oysters, over easy eggs and scrapple, eggs Benedict and Khachapuri. The Khachapuri, which is a rolled ham and feta bread with an sunny side up egg, was huge. We also enjoyed bloody Mary’s. I thought mine was a little tart, but it was packed with fresh horseradish. All in all, a good meal.

Diner

By Joske |

Restaurant located just outside the AKA university City appartment complex. Friendly and quick service. Open kitchen with chefs table. Nice beer and wine card. Quality of food is good. Prices are on the high end.

Superb food in a casual, modern setting

By Chawton |

This new-ish restaurant is just over the river from the old city, on the edge of the University. Very open and relaxed, with seating close to the open kitchen (there may be other rooms); the menu is equally relaxed and fairly short, but of excellent quality and culinary skill, we were delighted by our meal. We shared Grav-lax and a shrimp cocktail to start (they have oysters and a whole raw offering; the quality of both our starters were very good. We then had a pasta dish, rock shrimp Arrabiata, which had real depth of flavor; and the Bass, which was just as well prepared, and equally enjoyable. The wine list was good, with some affordable but drinkable choices by the glass. We'd go back if we were ever in Philly again.

Get the Brussels sprouts

By dands238 |

We enjoyed our lunch here. Although the menu doesn’t have a ton of choices, what we got was very good. The Brussels sprout side is amazing- highly recommend! We enjoyed the light and airy atmosphere. The only downside is the parking is difficult.

Excellent lunch, good value

By Simon J |

It's a beautiful space, and the perfect place to grab lunch or dinner if visiting WXPN World Café. I had an excellent pea gazpacho soup, with half a vegetarian sandwich. Looking forward to trying dinner.

Good+lousy=average

By Susan S |

Not really a cafe at all. Lovely interior with cozy banquet/booths. A very limited menu--at least for lunch.....and very expensive. We were there for a late lunch and it was less than 1/2 full. My husband and I both ordered lobster rolls. Mine with a salad and his with French Fries. $24 each. Lobster meat was succulent but not much of it. Greens ok with an interesting dressing. The Fries were cold when they were served--Hey: it is a cold lunch so can't they get the one hot thing to be hot????? Especially when the place is not busy. For the price there are better places in Philadelphia.

Really nice staff in need of good management

By Kevin C |

Had our first visit to WSC last Saturday night and offer these observations. Although every server we met was sweet and kind, there appears to be a lack of training and direction as to priorities. For instance, water glasses were constantly monitored and refilled but wait times for food was very long and when some items ultimately arrived, they were cold. Lasagna and raviolis are definitely not dishes best served cold. The wait for cocktails was unusually long and when drink orders arrived, they were prepared incorrectly, e.g., ice in a cocktail ordered "straight up" and an extra $3 charge on the bill for cocktails ordered "straight up with dirty rocks on the side" bringing the total cost of each drink to $19! Otherwise, entrees that were served hot - scallops and steak - were absolutely delicious. Therefore, I would consider another visit and hope that management will provide better training to bar staff and servers who clearly want to please the customers but haven't been properly trained.

Jazz Quintet at Brunch Seals the Deal

By TommyBoy94 |

This is a beautiful, stylish room in the FMC Center featuring a light wood slat and tile motif plus lots of glass to allow sunlight to stream in. The place was packed for Sunday Brunch and so we were slower getting started than I like (longish wait to be seated...but...hey...we weren't savvy enough to reserve in advance or en route...so that's on us. But once seated, they were slow in taking and processing the drink order and food order...that's on them.) Service, though, was warm and friendly as well as knowledgeable. Good wine pairings and Barbara's drink...a concoction called "Death by Patio"... was fine even though she threw them a curve by being probably the first person in history to ask for the drink to be watered down. Most folks want more, not less, booze, but she is our personal designated driver as well as my loyal long-time compagne and, of course, wife. I had the Merlot...server's choice...and they didn't stiff you as some places do on wine price when you leave the choice in server's hands. All very reasonable for the big city. The food was exceptional and we worked through enough items to have assure a good sampling of the fare. Amazing croissants, roasted potatoes, smoked bacon, cheeses. My ham and cheese croissant was made with Wisconsin cheddar and really good ham and the croissant itself was flaky and exactly as a croissant should be. Tasted more Parisian than Philadelphian. Barbara, among other items had a unique Pistachio and Cherry croissant that had real heft and was more a special bakery item than typical croissant. The food was more than enough and we were able to take home a good amount of the roasted potatoes, which Barbara turned into two potato, cheese and ham omelets for breakfast a deux, next morning. Getting back to the Paris theme, Sunday Brunch was made truly special by a wonderful jazz quintet that plays there from Noon to 3 on Sunday. Sax, clarinet, trumpet, trombone and guitar with vocals. The music ranged from Ellington to Mancini to period French music from the 30s and 40s. Barbara and I were seated with a great view of the band and the shine on the instruments, especially the trombone, added to the glow. The vocalist on guitar introduced and sang the American numbers in English and the French numbers were all carried off in perfect French. Nothing too loud, but just sufficient decibels to show virtuosity. The tower is a mixed use building near 30th Street Station with hotel, commercial space, and apartments. It is open for breakfast, weekend brunch, lunch and dinner. There is a full bar. Cost is not too dear, especially for Philly. $68 not including tip covered three adult beverages, two brunches with left-overs and one take-out order of that aforementioned Pistachio/Cherry delight.

Slow Service, Cold Food, rude bartender

By Rich V |

We went there for a 12 person business dinner while at a conference. We t to bar when we got there and the bartender couldn’t have been more rude. I asked for a glass of wine, it was corked but I was rudely informed that that was impossible because it was a screw top...not if it’s been open for three days!!! We had a 6 PM reservation, sat down at 6:30, waited 25 minutes for a server to come to the table, finally left at 9:45. There were times when the entire table was wondering if anyone was working. The food came out cold. To their credit, when everyone else had left the restaurant they started to pay attention...don’t waste your time or money.

Nutty Service

By Allen P |

This cafe is a great option if you are anywhere near 30th Street station. The place looks great and you can walk there in two minutes. The service is very challenging. There can be 3 servers standing there and you still cannot get someone to bring you a coffee!

Good place for business lunch

By dfc9258 |

We had a work lunch at this restaurant. The ambiance is relaxing, modern and had a very welcoming feel to it. The food was delicious and the burger was one of the best I've ever had. Service was good. Prices were a bit high, but the quality of the food was good.

Fun dinner

By alkarpe |

I came here as a part of large group for dinner, the place is amazing with good seating options, nice salads and tasty entrees. The servers really took good care of us as some of us were vegans and vegetarians.

Good food, normal portion sizes

By 112gayle13 |

After we suffered through a fire alarm, not caused by the Cafe, and during which chairs were brought outside and complimentary hot rum punch and hot chocolate were served, enjoyed a delightful meal. Their foccacia, complimentary bread, was delicious. It was restaurant week, but we went with just entrees. The carbonara was the right amount, cooked to perfection and enjoyable with mushrooms and pancetta. The hamburger was cooked to order, but when my husband realized that medium was too rare for him they gladly cooked him another that was more medium well. Service was quick and the waitstaff did a great job making us feel welcome.

My Philly Hangout

By Travelista |

The Walnut Street Cafe serves excellent, interesting food in a warm, comfortable atmosphere. It's in a perfect location, right in University City, Philadelphia -- adjacent to the AKA Serviced Apartments at the FMC Tower on the corner of 30th and Walnut (Walnut Street side.) The portions are small and slightly expensive, so if you're looking for "cheap, big portion comfort food" -- this is not the place. What it is, though, is extremely tasty and thoughtfully presented, in smaller portions for you to savor the gourmet experience. Every time I have dined here, and that's been breakfast, lunch, and dinner -- I have so enjoyed the experience and enjoyed every morsel of the delicious food. The wines are lovely, the rock shrimp pasta fresh and full of flavor. We had shortrib ragú once, with some added truffles that I think they specially added for us, which was absolutely delectable. Food is amazing! The host is extremely friendly and the waiters are also very attentive and efficient. I once sat at a table that was connected to and overlooking the kitchen area, which was a great way to see all the kitchen dynamics and watch the food being prepared. The food manager was very detailed in making sure each dish was prepared properly. They've got it quite organized there, which isn't always easy, as it gets quite crowded at peak times (definitely make a reservation.) Another time, I went to brunch there on a Sunday and there was a live jazz trio which I really enjoyed. The decor is modern with a light, cool atmosphere. The Philadelphia Inquirer also named the Walnut Street Cafe, one of its top restaurants in the city. Definitely I will be back soon!

A real treat

By GinPol |

We were in University City for a doctors appointment at Penn and didn't want to leave the city at 5 pm (traffic), so we found this place within walking distance (6-7 blocks). The waiter told us the restaurant had been open only 8 months. They have small plates as well as full entrees. I enjoyed a glass (or two) of a nice Chardonnay and Joe had a Malbec. They have a full bar. Both very good. I then enjoyed 2 kinds of raw oysters followed by butternut squash soup, and a rock shrimp pasta dish. Joe got an iceberg wedge that was big enough to share, and then the roast pork loin with broccoli rabe. Everything we had was really good! Ambience was great too. It had a very familiar, cozy feel to it.

Good for pre World Cafe Live

By Chris P. |

We had a group of nine on the patio for dinner. There's nothing really dramatic or outstanding about Walnut Street, it's just good solid food. We had a burrata, I had a pork chop, we got some brussels sprouts and asparagus for sides, all good. Wine list also basic and fine. Don't go out of your way to come here, but might be good if you need something to eat before catching the train.

Beautiful but...

By Frequent traveler |

Some recent reviews of WSC have been very good. Indeed, there was some good. This new cafe is convenient just at the juncture of Center City Philadelphia and the Penn/Drexel campuses. The place is beautiful. The hostess and wait staff are as nice as nice can be. Six unisex bathrooms for a medium sized restaurant is over the top. Here's the "but!" The brunch menu was average in variety as was the food itself. My omelette was running, seeming laying in some uncooked eggs. There was nothing else on the plate except multigrain toast, which was buttered when I distinctly asked for it not to be butter. The replacement was quite good, especially with some wonderful jams. My 3 guests also had eggs. We all agreed the food was just so-so, but that doesn't cut it when there are so many other brunch options in Philadelphia. Yet, I might give it another try when they get their act together. I hope management reads this review because I would like to seen them succeed.

This was my first meal at a restaurant since Covid began.

By TennisStar602 |

My meal at the Walnut Street Café marked my first time in which I ate at a restaurant since the pandemic started. There was plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, and people were spaced out. The staff members all wore masks. I liked my time outside and it was not very busy. There was also a band which played all different types of music. While the service was good, I did get sick from the food. The prices were not unfair to me, but I would have preferred bigger portions.

Great cafe for breakfast, lunch or dinner

Cute spot. Great if you are staying at AKA University Hotel. Nice breakfast dishes. Good burgers. Great coffee.

They do not honor your reservation

Made a reservation for a special event more than 3 weeks ahead (on March 29)to dine at Walnut St. Cafe knowing it's a busy weekend in Philly, and my local friends suggested that we dine her before concert. On April 25, the day before our reserved date , Adrian from the restaurant called and said they have a "buy-out" event and we need to rebook for a different date. This is SO WRONG.

A superior meal on all leels

Khalil will meet you at the door and will guide you through your whole meel. Our waiter was jake who led us successfully through the meal. Choices were spot on. Eddie was great on wine choices. Mel the manager spent a lot of positive time at our table. Besides these individuals the other wait staff was professional and fabulous. Our meals were outstanding. Shrimp was great. Dinner was super my pork loin was the best I have had. My wife had fettuccine with foil gras that was tremendous. Dessert was to die for. The atmosphere in the cafe. Is. Very romantic and modern. An absolutely superior meal. The restaurant is new and a definite place to visit in town. Try the ice cream sandwich for dessert. Wow

Very Cool. Very Delicious

What a great looking place. Contemporary with lots of glass & shiny things but good acoustics. Moderate size and very interesting wine list sourcing both the usual suspects along side less known appellations & blends. Not stuffy but the Somm discretely pre-smelled the glasses & tasted the wine. Each dish was attractive but not an architectural wonder. And delicious with flavorful juicy meat. Wonderful salad & dressing & excellent room temp Delicato squash. Rushed & headed for a show. Will have to return for their reputable pastries!

Brunch was meh

The place is great (floor to ceiling windows with a great open view), clean and modern ambiance. The food was disappointing however. Eggs Benedict came with a globby, unattractive hollandaise and the eggs were wobbly and cold. How do you manage to poach eggs and serve them cold?!? Poach them hours in advance? The server asked if everything was OK and I told him no, the eggs are cold—he said sorry and walked away without doing anything further.

Very disappointing

Upon our arrival, it was prophetic that several customers were complaining that they were waiting over 20 minutes for their drinks in the bar. It was not even crowded. We were promptly seated for dinner but it took awhile to get our first drink. The food arrived before cocktails. That was excusable but our second round of drinks did not arrive until after we finished dinner and waiting more than 40 minutes after placing our order. The entrees were okay. The fish was good. The $98 porterhouse was mediocre, even if it had been half the price. Our server, Gabriel, was very good and professional. Despite his diligence and charm, he could not compensate for a deplorable bar service and disappointing experience. The good news? You won't have wait for a bathroom - there are 6 in service. I only wish that the bar and restaurant service was as good.

well, well, well

everything here is done well...the glass and wood and light environment is done very well...the greeter at the door and the servers speak very well...internationally well....the menus are done so well they resemble one another and we ended up with three drink menus and only one food menu....the food is prepared very, very well....handsome in presentation and appetizing in taste.....every thing is done well......so why not a higher rating you may ask.......all i can say is well....well...well....seemed as if the soul of the place was hidden in spite of the delicious flounder, the surprising black bass, the salmon gravlax with the wonderful crackers.....what a wonder was done with the simple romaine and cheese.....yes, i do believe the pastry chef is the best thing happening here.....other than the view......it's just a tad bit pretentious

Refreshing and wonderful food

We went for lunch and found the place while strolling thru Philadelphia. The cafe has floor to ceiling windows... which makes the place feel light and airy. Jazz music complemented the ambiance and the menu. The staff was plentiful and really made you relaxed and welcome. The menu was American but has a unique twist. We loved the food. Would highly recommend the cafe for Sunday brunch and dinner.... not to mention lunch. We don't believe you will be disappointed.

Great food, great place!

My boyfriend and I went here about 2 weeks ago for dinner and it was amazing. The staff were super friendly and attentive and the food was awesome! They also have a nice beer, wine, cocktail selection. The place was empty when we went but the space is nice and big and can probably accommodate parties of any size. I highly recommend their pasta, which was amazing. Definitely worth checking out.

Seems like a work in progress

Beautiful looking restaurant in a great location. Services was fair but not great - for example, we were seated right away, but waited about 10 minutes for our menus. The uneven service felt like the managers/service staff were trying to learn a new systems. The food was much the same - not done enough (particularly the shishito peppers), not spiced quite right, not where I would expect a smoothly-operating kitchen to be. Overall, the experience was not bad, but not particularly good, and definitely on the expensive side.
